GECCU awards scholarships and bursaries TWELVE (12) students who were successful at the 2020 Caribbean Exit Primary Assessment (CPEA) have been awarded scholarships from the General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (GECCU).

The ceremony was held on Thursday September 30th 2021 at the credit union’s conference room.

The awardees of merit scholarships are Mikayla Durrant, Kira Murray, Shazara James, J’Dira Regis, Micah Williams-Jack, Korey James, Raeheem Trotman, Luke Duncan, Evan Rouse and Nathan Warrick. Warrick is a former student of the Owia Primary School, who was directly impacted by the eruptions of La Soufriere in April of this year.

Lamont Gregg and Shania Bynoe were awarded the Northern and Southern Grenadines Scholarships, respectively.

The students will receive full seven-year scholarships valued at $1,600.00 annually from Form 1 — 3 and $1,800 annually from Form 4 — Community College.

In addition to the presentation of scholarships, one hundred and forty-two (142) students were awarded one-off cash bursaries valued at $150.00 each to assist with the purchase of school supplies.

In his brief remarks, chairman of the Scholarship Committee Bro. Ronnie Daniel told the awardees, “The fact that you have excelled despite the myriad challenges to education during the last two or so years, says something about who you are and the quality you are made of.”

He made an impassioned plea to the recipients to give back to their society by volunteering in their communities and the nation as a whole.

National Scholar studying pre-medicine at Stanford University in the USA, and who represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, advised the recipients “to accept and enjoy the new challenges and experiences that they will face as these are all a part of the journey.”

In delivering words of appreciation on behalf of the recipients, Mikayla Durrant, a former student of the Kingstown Preparatory School, who placed 6th for girls and 10th overall, said that she was “exceedingly honoured to be a recipient of one of GECCU’s scholarship awards”.

She highlighted that “so many students and parents feel hopeless at the thought of the financial

GECCU’s President, Sis. Cecelia J. Williams pledged the credit union’s continued commitment to the development of the nation’s young minds.

GECCU’s Scholarship Programme was first established in 1981. Over the last five (5) years, GECCU has disbursed $994,000 in scholarships and bursaries. News 3 Thrilled to be part of history AMONG THOSE USING the Virgin Atlantic inaugural service from St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Argyle International Airport (AIA) to the UK last Wednesday, October 13, 2021, were Vincentian Chrome Alexander and his Jamaican wife Daivia Alexander.

The couple was in SVG to attend the funeral service and burial of Chrome’s father.

Both husband and wife expressed joy that they were now able to travel directly to Heathrow, which saves them a lot of time.

“This is our first international flight from St. Vincent back to the UK. Obviously we have the small stop in Barbados but we’re still going straight

through. It feels so comfortable checking in - the process was a little rough on edges but it is the first one so you have to accept that. But the fact that we leaving here to fly back to the UK is a really proud feeling. To be home, using the international airport and given the sacrifices that St. Vincent has made to establish itself and for me as a frequent traveler, this is really important for the country,” said Chrome.

The couple admitted that at first when they were booking their return flight, they did not realize that it was a direct one.

AIA welcomes Virgin Atlantic From Front Page.

by KENVILLE HORNE WEDNESDAY 13TH OCTOBEr, 2021 was another significant day in the unfolding aviation history of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

That was the day when the Argyle International Airport (AIA) welcomed the maiden Virgin Atlantic flight, which marked the first TransAtlantic flight from Heathrow International Airport, UK, direct to the AIA. As expected hundreds of residents took up strategic positions around the runway on the day, reminiscent of the massive turnout of citizens when the airport was opened in February 2016.

Some 100 passengers disembarked the A330-300 aircraft after it took up its

position amidst Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and American Airlines aircraft, two of three international airlines already offering service to SVG, the other being Air Canada (Rouge).

Virgin Atlantic will operate a twice-weekly service via Barbados, to the AIA. Flights are scheduled for Wednesday and Sunday.

The Order was imposed by the Family Court on June 17, 2019, prohibiting Sergeant from entering the premises of his mother Ilca Browne, an 88-year-old retiree residing at Arnos Vale.

Sergeant pleaded guilty to the charge, and the facts were read at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday.

Sergeant was unrepresented.

Because the Order was made by the Family Court, that Court could not deal with the matter, hence the reason for it being transferred.

When the issue of sentencing arose, Prosecutor Shamrack Pierre indicated that Sergeant’s antecedents were not before the Court and requested an adjournment.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne

said she would need to look at the defendant’s antecedent record, to assist her in sentencing. As a result, she adjourned sentencing to today, to have Sergeant’s record before the Court.

In presenting the facts earlier, Prosecutor Pierre told the Court that because of Sergeant’s behaviour towards his mother, she applied to the Family Court and was granted a Court Order for Sergeant to stay off her premises.

However, last Saturday, around 2 pm, Browne, who lives at Arnos Vale with her grand-daughter, was again traumatized by her son.

Browne was at home with her grand-daughter when she heard a noise, and recognized that it was her son. He was outside behaving in an aggressive manner. He was turning over the garbage bins, and walking around cursing. She reported the matter to the police and Sergeant was subsequently arrested.

Is trust in government falling?

BY ENFORCING MANDATORY vaccination on people on the one hand and ignoring the voice and views of those same people, these are but two factors that fuel mistrust which shapes citizen behavior.

An inundation of calls from disgruntled people to interactive radio programmes and an immediate response that discounts whatever those callers had to say; a proliferation of temper tantrums against the government flag on every occasion that presents itself; a mass public demonstration against proposed laws and amendments to existing laws and a proportionate showing of support for these legislations; the use of the police and its quasi-military units to round up those who are brave enough to show public dissent and a call for rounding up more of these persons — all of these are symptoms of a problem that some experts would like us to believe are difficult to diagnose.

But one thing is certain: these are symptoms that speak to a lack of confidence in government and a response from that government that could well be characterised as draconian.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reported that among its membership, the percentage of citizens who trust government varies widely from 80% in Switzerland to 13% in Greece. The OECD deduced that overall, trust has been steadily declining for 10 years, now sitting at an average of 43%.

While it may not be the most dependable means of measurement, we in SVG can rely on the results of a general election to guide where the people’s trust lies. After all, a general election brings out the highest percentage of adults in a single occasion.

The results of the last general election — 5 November, 2020 — showed that the losing New Democratic Party (NDP), in a firstpast-the-post electoral system, garnered 50.3% of the popular vote, while the victorious incumbent Unity

Labour Party (ULP) took 49.6% Yes, we are wont to speculate that this result indicated that the people had registered a dwindling trust in the incumbent ULP government, which had formed government since 2001 always with the popular vote until 2020.

And while there was a vociferous outpouring of accusations of dishonesty, corruption, favouristism and even nepotism during the election campaign, we must tread carefully, for losing confidence in government isn’t just about how people vote or view politicians — it also affects the way they interact with each other.

The reality is, though, that when the low and middle-income classes of voters find themselves burdened with debt (including mortgages), job insecurity and depleting savings, they start to see government, the political and state institutions as dishonest, corrupt and there to serve the few not the many.

Even amidst economic growth, the people will resist the repression of free speech and point to continued prevalence of poverty.

If people think their elected officials are playing by these rules, they come up with ways to game the system. And when this every-manfor-himself attitude prevails, the rules of society start to erode and citizens, like the government they perceive, are likely to cut corners and rules and order are threatened.

So, are we living in a country where, because we mistrust the government and state institutions that we allow this to affect civic life, to the point where an injured citizen is refused emergency attention at the primary hospital in the land?

When people do not trust others to uphold society’s norms, they don’t do so themselves.

Figuring out whom to trust in current day SVG is harder than ever. For the first time in recent history, the divide among Vincentians isn’t as simple as ULP versus NDP - it’s a chasm between what people believe to be true.

Protecting/preserving our-way-of-life beaches THE RECENT REPORTS that the small remaining section of the beachfront at Buccament Bay could soon become unavailable to the fisherfolk in the area, reminded me of the unfinished conversation about Indian Bay. This time a few of the facts are different.

A resident of the area proposes a development that would potentially restrict the fisherfolk’s access and use of the beach. The people who are affected by this development are poor working-class fisherfolk. The beach in question is the small remaining section of Buccament Bay that the Sanders Resort does not impact. And most of all, it does not have a high-profile Marine Activist living close by named Ms. Mitchell, who swims regularly in the area.

I feel obligated to express my outrage in the absence of someone like Ms. Mitchell, the self-appointed protector of the Indian Bay Beach. The sale/exchange of property that facilitated the new Buccament Polyclinic (Health Clinic) should have included a clause protecting the beach for those who depend on it for a livelihood. Now, to be clear, I fully support Mr. Diaze’s right to develop his property to its maximum potential. I also appreciate his offer to work with the fisherfolk to protect their investment, in times of need. Once again, I find myself asking for the government to intervene to find an amicable solution to what could rapidly deteriorate into another unnecessary confrontation. Protect Mr. Diaze’s rights, and those of the fisherfolk; this should take minimal effort by the government.

Now let’s refresh our memory about the issues at Indian Bay. A hotel developer wants to remove some rocks (reef) from the area and add some beach protection barriers and white sand to the beach. Some long-time

residents of the area, afraid of losing access and control of the beach, mounted a campaign against the “improvements”. They cited protection of the coral reefs as a reason for their objection to the development.

I must admit that my first reaction when I heard about a hotel developer wanting to enhance the beach was that we would lose access to another beach.

However, as more information was made available, I was not as concerned.

I listened to a discussion on SVGTV one Sunday afternoon, and Ms. Mitchell and a Marine Biologist on the show made some very compelling arguments for rejecting the proposal currently before the Planning Department. That is, if protecting the coral reef was the motivation. She was very creative in disguising her NIMBY sentiments. It wasn’t until close to the end of the programme her reason became clear. At one point, she said, “...this is my beach,” and she was ready to stage demonstrations and go to the courts to stop this improvement project if she had to.

I am not sure about the current status of the Indian Bay project and quite frankly, I don’t care. The details provided by the developer were woefully inadequate. However, I thought the proposed improvement was a great idea and should be approved by the Planning Departments.

Those arguing against the Indian Bay beach rehabilitation claimed to have over 5,000 signatures attached to a petition against the improvement. I am now looking for the same level of enthusiasm to protect the livelihood of the folks in Buccament. After all, nothing says Vincentian like catching and selling Tri Tri, Jackfish, Robin, or Sprat. Maybe one day an authentic tourist experience for visitors at the Saunders Resort could include joining the locals to “pull seine”.

* With the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths and given that the vast majority of cases “are contacts of known positive cases and persons seeking care” and that we now have well over 1200 active COVID-19 cases, would the government reconsider the ‘blended approach’ to instructions in our schools and stick to online instructions at least for this term? * Have the health officials weighed the chances of further

Because reading is so important, schools can require each student to purchase a different book for the school library and

in this way expand the repertoire available to all the students each year.

Students with reading challenges can listen to the audio book they are reading to complement their knowledge of the vocabulary and narrative.

The local Newspapers are indispensable for all readers. News, current affairs, the columnists, the editorials, sports, and opinion pieces, among others, should spark interest. Reading stimulates the brain in

ways that watching and listening cannot.

Students should also write at least a one-page journal each day. Writing goes along with reading and creates avenues for thoughts to be fully expressed in formal language. Reading and Writing will go a long way in preventing our children from falling behind in our current restrictive learning environment.

Dealing with mental illness WORLD Mental Health Day is marked annually across the world on October 10. I understand that the overall objective of the Day is “to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health”.

This year October 10 fell on a Sunday. Maybe this was cause for what I observed to be minimal activity aimed at keeping mental health issues in focus, at least during the week leading up to October 10.

The truth is as a society we have disregarded the needs of the mentally ill. I am of the opinion that the majority of society perceives mental ill people as people to be avoided if not locked away. How sad it is when we learn of families abandoning their mentally ill members to a lifetime of

incarceration at the Mental Health Centre.

Yes, we understand the mentally ill cannot care for themselves and there is every good chance that some of them would become aggressive and violent.

That is why we need to get the mentally ill off the streets and direct them to appropriate care, not to mention that tolerating them roaming the streets, especially in Kingstown, makes the place unattractive and

unsafe.

If we say we are civilized then we must care for those less fortunate that us, moreso those who cannot help themselves, like the mentally ill.

As a retired citizen, one who has seen it all, I remain concerned about the manner in which we deal with the mentally ill. Too often I have seen what could be described as the wrong outcome when there is conflict between the mentally ill,

the police and even the general public.

If we want to show that we are a civilised people, we will move as a society to address the broken lives of the mentally ill.

Mornings

THIS IS BY far not a million-dollar question but nonetheless one that needs to be asked and asked early: Are we going to have Nine Mornings Festival this year?

If my memory is all there, I recall that after the staging of the Nine Mornings Festival last year there was a marked increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Nobody is going to tell me that this didn’t have anything to do with the number of people — including nationals — who came in for the Festival.

You see, we never closed out airport so the people overseas and airlines made good use of the chance to come to SVG and make some money respectively.

Thank God, the airlines eventually pulled out of SVG temporarily and we were able to control the number of people coming in and therefore, we decreased the chances of importing the COVID-19.

I strongly recommend that we have no Nine Mornings Festival this year — I repeat, no Nine Mornings Festival this year!!!

We are having a steady rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and the number of deaths seem to be increasing by the week. Let us safeguard ourselves by not having any mass gathering this year.

I mean, if we can control the number of people attending churches, why can’t we forego one festival to keep ourselves safe.

Build it and they will come Introduction WEDNESDAY, October 13, 2021 marked another exciting milestone in the very short life of the Argyle International Airport that was operationalised just a few years ago in February of 2016.

On that day, just a few days ago, crowds of Vincentians gathered in Argyle at any location where they can get a glimpse of what was unfolding before their very eyes, to witness history in the making. Vincentians made the journey to be able to say, “I was there when it happened”, and to be able to proudly tell the story to their children and grandchildren.

That was the day the AIA welcomed its first Trans-Atlantic flight from Heathrow International Airport in London United Kingdom direct to the AIA right here in SVG. This occurrence marked the fourth international carrier to fly to the recently operationalised AIA and this is significant for many reasons.

Previously, Caribbean Airways Limited (CAL), Air Canada (Rouge), and American Airline (AA) had commenced direct flight operations to the AIA. What is now a living, vibrant project playing its transformative role in the Vincentian society, began as an audacious dream of Comrade Ralph and the ULP after gaining office here in 2001.

The journey which started even while in opposition was fleshed out in an address by Comrade Ralph titled, “The International Airport Project at Argyle” on August 8, 2005. In this address at the Methodist Church Hall, Prime Minister Gonsalves outlined in great detail the reason for embarking on the project and how the project would be financed among other details. He was clear about the challenge this country was about to embark on and the enormity of the task in financing such a project. What was clear in his mind was that our country could not carry on the way we were without an international airport.

In referring to the enormity of the task of constructing the international airport and the courage required, he stated, “It is not an exercise for the faint-hearted, the overly-cautious, the pessimist or one stuck in a neutral gear of learned helplessness. This is a matter for a government with a vision; for a government which is creative, innovative and wellconnected regionally and internationally”. In the effort to construct the modern competitive many-sided, post-colonial economy, that is at once local, regional and global, it was critical that an international airport be constructed and this ULP government was up to the task.

A victory for all Vincentians The opening of the AIA in 2016 was met with much fanfare and rejoicing as Vincentians recognised the significance of the completion of this project for our developing country and its economy. Comrade Ralph in 2005 had said this: “The requisites of economic diversification and regional and international competitiveness demand an international airport. Our country’s tourism potential would not be fully realised unless we build an international airport. And tourism is likely to be our main foreign exchange earner for a long time to come”. It was clear that the development trajectory of this country depended significantly on the construction of the international airport as our country’s

multi-sectoral developmental approach required direct international airlift. It was promised that all aspects of Vincentian livelihood would be impacted positively directly and indirectly, from trade, tourism, agriculture, education, and a host of other activities by the completion and operationalisation of the AIA. Vincentians regardless of their occupation were all excited about the possibilities that now existed as a result of the operationalisation of the international airport.

Even as the construction of the airport continued uninterrupted, the NDP adopted and maintained the same posture of opposition to its construction throughout. Their commentary on the airport was not only negative and disappointing, it sank to the level of being unpatriotic with various spokespersons including candidates and MPs referring to the site being converted eventually to a golf course, a peanut patch and one even wishing that a tsunami could destroy it. All this while this worthwhile project continued, employing hundreds of Vincentians directly and many others through the provision of various services. And even as the hopeless opposition to the very end sought to derail the opening of the airport by writing to the Easter Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) seeking to prevent the certification of the airport, the rank and file of that party relished the completion of the project. On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, as was the case back in 2016, the crowds that flocked the AIA, included Vincentians of all walks of life, including some who voted for the opposition NDP. For those individuals, it was important to lay ownership of this transformative project that would change our lives for the better. While unfortunately the leadership of their party stood afar, failing to rejoice in this victory for our country, they were content to stand afar off and frown metaphorically as the rest of the country rejoiced. Years after 2016, the NDP still finds itself “nit-picking” on this or that issue on the AIA, hoping that something would stick and that they would be able to justify their unpatriotic response to the construction of the AIA. Unfortunately for them, they would never be able to re-write the history which would be forever unkind to them for their unpatriotic posture and their complete lack of support for the construction of the AIA.

Conclusion Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has come a long way from the days of constant unfulfilled promises of the NDP on airport construction. Their inability to deliver on their usual election gimmick about the construction of the international airport was laid bare as Vincentians removed them from office to give a progressive government the opportunity to move this country forward. We can proudly boast of an international airport, where we now receive direct flights from Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, that will transform economic activity in this country and expedite the realisation of that modern, post-colonial, many-sided, competitive economy set in motion by this ULP administration.

Poor fiscal management by the ULP government “SALARY will buy less amidst COVIDfuelled inflation — Finance Minister”, the headline of a news story carried by Iwitness News. It is disingenuous for the Minister of Finance to give the impression that COVID-19 pandemic is the cause of inflation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The harsh economic reality that we are experiencing is due mainly through ill-advised policies by the government, mismanagement of the country’s economy and the lack of accountability by the Unity Labour Party (ULP) government.

The economy of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been performing poorly since the ULP has been in power. Speaking on the New Times progamme recently, president of the New Democratic Party, Dr. Godwin Friday, made the following observation: “The economy was basically stagnated for the last five years leading up to the pandemic. In 2019, the growth rate was less than 1 percent, 0.5 percent according to the ECCB, and the average growth rate from 2015 to 2019 was 1.4 percent.

The challenges have been magnified, exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the eruption of La Soufriere. Moreover, we have to ensure that the government is held accountable in any event for the mismanagement which led up to the point when we have to deal with this crisis. It limited the ability to respond effectively. And, also account for the funds that were received from various sources whether it was borrowed or monies that were given to the people of the country to assist with the volcanic eruption and the COVID-19 crisis. Those have to be accountable for as well.

There are other accountability issues that we have raised over the course of a number of years about how the government has managed the finances of the country how they have reported on it, completely unacceptable. When you have a poor country; when you have people struggling; when the government feel they could just come and put on new tax whenever they want money and the rest of us just basically have to bear it, they have to tell us how they are spending the money.”

Further, the government in this year’s budget increased the Custom Service Charge. The increase in prices was predicted by Dr. Friday. Earlier this year, Dr. Friday said: “The government has increased taxes on Vincentians. This time it is in the form of an increase in the Customs Service Charge (CSC). The CSC has been increased from 5% to 6% – i.e. a 20% hike in the CSC. The Customs service charge is a tax paid on all goods imported into the country.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a small open economy. We import most of what we consume. Therefore, the CSC is included in the price of most of the things that we buy and use in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. So, its effect is very broad. Furthermore, the CSC increase will affect VAT as well.

That is to say, the amount of money the government will collects on each VAT item will increase. This is

because VAT is charged on the goods after the value of those goods has been raised by the higher customs service charge.

By raising the CSC from 5% to 6%, the price of most goods we buy in the store or bring into the country for ourselves will go up. In fact, some prices have already gone up. People have noticed it. We will pay more for almost everything we use, including foodstuff: e.g. cooking oil, corned beef, chicken and other meats, salt, rice, sugar, macaroni, juices, ketchup, seasonings, detergents, soap, shampoo, school supplies, clothing and shoes, and everything else that we get at the grocery stores and clothing stores.

Also, hardware goods: lumber, cement, galvanize, bathroom fittings, nails, screws, paint, etc. Other household goods: pots and pans, cloth, linoleum for your floor, light bulbs, plates, spoons, and heavy appliances such as stoves, fridges and microwave ovens will cost more. And motor vehicles of all kinds will cost more to import. The bigger the purchase, the more money the government will collect and the more you the consumer/taxpayer will notice the increase.

The government expects to collect $8 million directly from the increase in the CSC. This estimate does not include the additional amounts the government will also get from VAT (i.e. after VAT is charged on goods whose value has been increased by the higher CSC). In other words, the increase is expected to earn the same amount, or more than the government earned additionally when it raised VAT from 15% to 16%, five years ago.

We are the only government that is taxing its way out of a pandemic; out of a volcanic crisis. The money to be given to people for La Soufriere relief is taken back in the increase in the Customs Service Charge.”

$95 Million still an issue Over the period from 2010 to 2015, there was an amount of about $95 million difference between what the bank said was withdrawn as part of its overdraft account, and what the Accountant General can present to the Director of Audit as the state of the overdraft account.

What this means, is not the fact that there was a discrepancy, but that that discrepancy must be explainable.

When the Accountant General cannot explain that to the satisfaction of the Director of Audit, then it leads to all sort of questions: Were there inefficiencies? Were there losses? Or worse, was there misappropriation?

These are questions that need to be answered.

In her report of 2009, the Director of Audit said: “Because of the significance of the matters described above, and comments mentioned otherwise in this report, I am of the opinion that the financial statements presented for audit did not in all material respects fairly represent the financial position of the government.”

Prioritise good health

WE CONTINUE to be encouraged by those among us who regularly make an effort to assist those in need, engage in philanthropic activities, and/or pool their resources or talents in an effort to improve the physical, social, economic, spiritual, or emotional wellbeing of others. These individuals often do so quietly and in the absence of fanfare.

They need no public recognition as they contribute to school feeding programmes, rebuilding of homes, cleaning rivers and beaches, protecting ecosystems, caring for vagrants, and so on. These become beacons of hope and positive role models. They remind us that there is still so much good to be celebrated within our society. They also testify that, as they pause to give, they get such deep and refreshing satisfaction and feeling of self-worth.

As they share, they grow.

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) reminded us that, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”

This African-American educator, author, and orator, was adviser to several presidents of the United States of America. Washington was among the last generation of black American influential leaders born into slavery but committed to elevating the educational and social status of the ex-slaves and their descendants.

He inspired many to seek growth opportunities through education and entrepreneurial activities. He dedicated his time and skills to this most worthy cause of building a subculture and a society that sought growth prospects through personal accomplishments. He did so by encouraging the disenfranchised and repressed to keep hope alive even amidst the repressive Jim Crow Laws that were practiced in the southern United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He grew in stature and rose to national and international fame as he paused to influence the mindset of a marginalized people. Among other things, he advocated the benefits of self-help and academic pursuits in an effort to alleviate much of the pain and suffering of his time. His support from middle-class blacks, white philanthropists, and church leaders created and sustained a national movement that enabled many to observe and appreciate the benefits of personal and communal growth through sharing.

Bill Gates, the American software developer, business magnate, and philanthropist, reminds us that, “Effective philanthropy requires a lot of time and creativity — the same kind of focus and skills that building a business requires.” While it is admirable to have individuals commit financial resources to efforts aimed at self-sustainability, community enhancement, and the like, we are reminded of the dire need to also have individuals who will invest time and creativity to such efforts; individuals who would be prepared to commit their time, talents, and treasure to some of these most worthwhile endeavours.

There is another aspect of this topic

(Sharing to Grow) that beckons to be included in our discourse. This revolves around the looming disparity that often underpins the need for many of our philanthropic activities that revolve around health care, education, access to potable water, improved sanitary conditions, and so on. Martin Luther King Jr. (19291968) noted that, “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.”

Many of the economic injustices that King referred to in 1963 still exist today. These go beyond the political discrimination, lack of accountability and transparency as successive governments create opportunities for the economic growth of their supporters and, at the same time, the economic suppression of those with opposing political views. The maldistribution of opportunities for economic growth are not limited to developed countries. These are also evident in emerging economies.

Society demands new political insights where political leaders see the need to provide opportunities for all citizens; not just their supporters.

As wealth-creating opportunities are fashioned for all people, regardless of political affiliation, religion, ethnicity, sexual preferences, and so on, the society is more likely to observe a more uniformed pattern of growth and economic stability.

Each of us, in our own special way, have been blessed with talents and abilities that can be used to enhance the lives of others. The early Christian church advocated the benefits of sharing with others. In the New Testament book of Acts (see chapter 4) there is a vivid description of believers sharing their earthly possessions with others. There are also multiple examples of individuals who, as an expression of love for their fellow man, gave sacrificially in order to alleviate the pain and suffering of others. As they were blessed, they paused to be a blessing.

Today, we have numerous opportunities to support the efforts of individuals and communities throughout and beyond our nations.

The sick, the indigent, the mentally unstable, the aged, orphans, the physically handicapped, and the financially challenged are but a few of the individuals who silently lurk in our neighborhoods needing some form of relief. Sometimes we can become so focused on our own desires that our vision of these needy citizens become obscured. They may appear untouchable and invisible. However, we grow, and they grow too, when we pause to lend a hand and assist them to carry their load. We are reminded and encouraged by the wisdom that is recorded in the Old Testament book of Proverbs (11:24-25) where we are instructed that, “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” We grow as we share.

SOME OF US ARE FAR TOO BUSY to find time to care for ourselves. We make all kinds of excuses: work schedule, children, a demanding spouse or lover, commitment to our church or community.

If you fit into this too busy group, especially if you are a professional or successful business executive, you may accumulate lots of cash and other assets. If you are not careful or begin to take stock of your life and health, by the time you get past 50 years, you could consider yourself lucky if you have not started to make regular visits to the doctor, thus giving away much of what you were busily acquiring.

The coronavirus pandemic has placed enormous pressure on societies and their populations. For the last 19 months, we have been forced to act and do things differently. Social activities have ground to a halt.

Human beings who are social by nature have faced lockdowns or curtailment of their right to congregate and socialise. We can no longer greet and hug our friends and associates as we were accustomed.

As a consequence, too many of us now go from work to home. We sit before the television and ‘pig out’.

Some proudly rub their protruding stomachs and celebrate their ‘Covid pounds’. A recent study revealed that for every pound you gain beyond your recommended weight, you lose an estimated five days off your life.

Added to this reality are the difficulties faced by persons with excessive weight; the strain on joints, especially their hips, knees and ankles. With increased weight, our organs, particularly the heart and lungs, are forced to work overtime to perform their vital functions.

The tech revolution has created unforeseen problems for all of us, but our children and young adults are worse affected. They no longer go to the parts or beaches to meet and greet friends, play and work their muscles.

They no longer share a meal with the family as they are often locked away in their rooms glued to their devices.

Their bodies and minds suffer from stunted growth. Increasingly, our youngsters suffer from depression, attention deficit disorders and childhood obesity and diabetes. The coronavirus epidemic has compounded the problem for our future leaders as they are robbed of in-class interaction with friends, teaching and learning experiences. Combined, these things we took for granted before Covid-19 rob our young people, create a learning deficit and an educational divide that will not easily or quickly be closed.

There is an additional fallout from the coronavirus epidemic. We speak to the emerging mental dislocation and destabilization of citizens.

Increasingly, there are reports of physical and psychological abuse among adults and lovers, and sexual abuse of children.

Society is in a mess, and we have a lot of cleaning to do. These problems

will demand a lot of resources.

Unfortunately, SVG lacks capacity.

We are short of trained expertise and or the resources to acquire them.

Many of our institutions, including the all-important hospitals and mental health centre, are embarrassingly understaffed and underequipped to deal with the problems confronting us.

These mountains of problems bring us back to the vital need for preventative medicine. Generally, we overeat the wrong foods and consume far too much alcohol. The poorer sections of our society have the added problem of not having the financial wherewithal to buy nutritious food.

They depend on a belly full. Oily, salty, sugary and cheap carbs are their staple.

Forty years ago, it was a rarity to see an obese child or young adult.

Today most of our adult population is overweight and or obese. We no longer go hungry, but we are starving, lacking in good nutrition–our joints creek under the burden of excessive weight.

Diabetes and hypertension have become silent killers. It is now unusual to meet an adult who is not taking medication to fight these health problems. Citizens are losing body parts to diabetes at an alarming rate. The Caribbean is said to have one of the highest amputee rates in the world. We have had no wars or major social upheavals, yet we are losing organs and limbs alarming rates. The Covid-19 epidemic has claimed the lives of 38 Vincentians, not so much because they are unvaccinated. They lost their lives to the disease because they are primarily advanced in age or suffer underlying conditions.

The good news is that many of these health problems can be controlled or even cured. We simply have to take stock of our lives. Too many of us are on a ‘see-food’ diet. We have an uncontrollable urge to eat or drink. It is amazing to see a woman sit and drink five malts or a man consume eight or more alcoholic drinks in a few hours. Most of us refuse to exercise.

Many of our people don’t have a clue as to what constitute healthy practices. They need lifestyle changes.

The three major killers are dehydration (insufficient water), poor nutrition and stress. We drink malts and alcohol but not water. We consume an overabundance of unhealthy foods and drinks, thus causing excessive amounts of strain on the body.

And there are the stresses of life. If we learn to control these three killers, we will witness a radical reversal of some of our ailments. We will also add a renewed vitality to life that has been absent since many of us were young adults.

People who are in their sixties and seventies have said that the country is the worst they have seen in their life time. They say the roads are very bad

in many parts of the country and need to be fixed.

They talked also about the high levels of unemployment and the poverty that can be seen throughout the country. They mentioned also the high level of crime that we see around the country.

They want the country to be better, but have no faith in this ULP government. They said they don’t believe that the ULP regime has the

ability to make the country prosperous. They have no idea why the ULP regime has not built factories to create jobs for people. They talked also about the ULP regime’s failure to create sustainable sources of income for the country to create a strong economy.

Nearly everywhere you travel to in SVG, the cries are the same: that of destitution, too much crime, no jobs, no money circulating, some parents cannot afford to send their children to school, and others can only send their children to school on a hungry belly.

These children are being left behind.

Beckles said that the university’s “systems for teaching and examination continue to be robust” An internal UWI report leaked to The Gleaner showed that irregularities ballooned as much as twentyfold, to 98, in semester one of the 2020-21 academic year compared to five two years prior.

The report cited “an unacceptably high amount of irregularities each semester” and that “cheating in tertiary exams is becoming an organised and lucrative industry with students paying third parties to complete assessments on their behalf”.

The reliance on online classes since the coronavirus pandemic is believed to have widened The UWI’s vulnerability to cheating.

The Gleaner, in support of its findings, reported that a former graduate who owns a research consultancy firm that provides support to master’s and PhD candidates explained that companies like his are merely fulfilling a demand for writing services.

“It is a matter that you supply what is in demand. A lot of working students genuinely do not have the time to be bogged down with writing papers,” the consultancy head said.

A lecturer at Mona’s Faculty of Medical Sciences is also quoted as saying that there has been an explosion in academic irregularities since the start of online testing.

The UWI probes exam cheating THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS of exam cheating on the rise at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and campus officials say the worrying trend cropped up during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Campus principal Professor Brian Copeland is reported by Guardian Media, Trinidad, as confirming that ‘while exam cheating is not new, the problem worsened last year with students writing online exams’.

As a result, The UWI administration stopped online exams, and students at the Mona Campus have already returned to physical sites.

At the St Augustine Campus, Copeland told Guardian media that staff had noticed a change in students’ performances and immediately launched a probe.

“We actually did a

close check on results after the first exam after the second semester in 2020, which is around maybe last year, and we saw that a couple of the faculties had a change in the performance levels, in particular, a higher pass rate in certain courses and so on,” he told Guardian Media during an interview.

However, he noted that determining whether students were, in fact, cheating, was a challenge on its own.

“You can’t automatically assume that because you’re teaching online. It’s a different modality and if you mask it, well then you can actually teach a lot better than you do face to face and I asked this question–how do you know if it’s cheating versus good teaching,” he said.

Copeland did, however,

explain that lecturers were able to pick up instances where students had been collaborating with each other, while others had been using learning materials.

The trend, he added, was noticed in certain professional fields such as medicine and engineering.

Copeland could not confirm how many reports of cheating were investigated at the St Augustine Campus.

Meanwhile, president of the UWI St Augustine Guild, Kobe Sandy, admitted to being concerned about the trend.

He asked, “What is the reality that students are facing that might cause them to go into a mode of survival to want to pass an exam? We have to look at that before we say students are unethical.”

KCCU fixed on membersÊ protection

THE KINGSTOWN COOPERATIVE CREDIT UNION (KCCU), registered April 12, 1958, remains steadfast in fulfilling its mission of ensuring that its members are protected, whatever the situation.

By tomorrow Saturday, October 16, registration for the participation in the 59th Annual General Meeting of the Credit Union will close. That will allow those interested to take part in the session by Zoom, from 3 pm Monday, October 18.

Copies of the annual report have been made available to members, and their participation is expected to shape the institution going forward.

The meeting comes in the wake of an ongoing coronavirus pandemic that is continuing to unleash severe, adverse impact on the world’s economy.

But the KCCU Board of Directors, led by President Cynthia HopeBrowne, is keeping a positive handle on matters.

She notes that that St. Vincent and the Grenadines has “weathered the pandemic infused global downturn better than its tourismdependent regional counterparts.”

She commits the KCCU to “implementing measures to protect its human and financial resources from the challenges of the pandemic.”

If the ruptures in world economy were not enough, this country was faced with a series of explosive eruptions of its La Soufriere volcano.

The KCCU, whose headquarters is pictured, continues to show steady overall growth.

This heaped up added pressure on the Vincentian populace and is causing direct personal hardships and, cognisant of their trials, the KCCU is adopting flexible means to ensure that it continues to deliver timely and relevant services to its membership.

Joselle Jocelyn, chairperson of the Education Committee, notes the loss of jobs members suffered in the “face of this unprecedented and unanticipated Covid-19 pandemic,” as well as the pay cuts others had to endure.

She pointed to provision of food vouchers to fifty members.

The KCCU continues to register strong growth in membership, registering an increase of 1,050 to bring the total to 24,106 at the start of 2021.

As it stands to date in 2021, assets increased to $122,949,427.00 and liabilities to $102,058,241.00.

But Knights said Bacchus would “eventually find ‘his voice’ after hearing, for the first time, the music of jazz pianist Herbie Hancock’s ‘Chameleon’ and not long thereafter keyboardist Chick Corea’s ‘Spain’ and ‘Romantic Warrior’ album, with the ‘Return To Forever’ band,” Knights said.

“Whenever the conversation arose about jazz, jazz-fusion and the many great improvisers of this art form, Greg (Bacchus) will always refer to Herbie as ‘the man’, to jazz organist Jimmy Smith as ‘the monster’”, he added.

“However, of the two favorites, Chick Corea was the most effective of all on Greg’s life and had a profound influence on his playing.”

Cecil “Batts” Lewis, a former guitarist for the defunct Vincentian band, Revolution, who also lives in Brooklyn, said Bacchus was “the true musical virtuoso, the incredible multiinstrumentalist whose musical life has spanned decades.

“Yes, to hear ‘Bachie’ perform, you can conclude there must have been some sort of divine intervention that enabled him,” Lewis said. “I mean, how else can you explain the things he did musically?

“And although it’s important to know that ‘Bachie’ had some early blueprint musical tutelage, he was practically a self-taught virtuoso, harnessing his learning from every musician, every genre of music he heard; I mean every,” Lewis added.

Ploomy Lewis, renowned Vincentian bassist who resides in Hollywood, Fl., said he knew Bacchus since 1970, on a personal and professional level.

“We had many opportunities to play in bands together and had a creative partnership that was

musically innovative, whether we played jazz, funk, or any other genre,” Lewis said. “He was a gifted musician in his own right, loved bouncing different ideas about new sounds and equipment off of me.”

Albert ‘Juice’ Rodney, currently living in Port Lucie, Fl., said he met Bacchus in 1970, in Form 2D, at Gregory Bacchus and his wife Annette, a the Grammar vocalist of no mean range, often combined School, and as a performing duo. “formed a lasting bond.

SVG Red Cross involved in recovery phase SIX MONTHS after the April 09, 2021 explosive eruption of the La Soufrière volcano, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross (SVGRC) is immersed in the national post eruption recovery phase.

That phase involves the return of persons to their homes, after their lives and livelihoods were affected when they were physically displaced.

The SVGRC has been working alongside several government ministries on a variety of projects that reach out to those persons.

Among the projects was the distribution of food and non-food items. This outreach moved from serving 1,100 to 4,000 persons.

Close to 300 persons have also benefited from the Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) of the Red Cross.

Through this programme many who were in private residences were able to pay their rent and attend to other amenities.

Now, as persons return to their homes, the SVGRC is assisting them with the clean-up of their homes and surroundings, by providing wheel barrows, shovels, and garden tools.

Recognising the particular needs of the children who were displaced, the Red Cross introduced the Child Friendly Spaces programme which offers psycho-social support. Over 400 children have been touched by this programme, and each received a children’s kit to aid in his/her readjustment.

And when the all clear was given for the return of persons to their homes, the SVGRC team played an integral role by in ensuring the orderly closing of most schools that were used as shelters.

“We want to get people back on their feet,” said Simmons, explaining further that the intention is to help to transition these persons from a state of dependency back to “a normal life or at the very best, as close as possible to where they once were.”

Not to be outdone, and with the recent spike in Covid-19 infection rates and the unfortunate deaths, the SVGRC team has doubled its efforts and paired the volcanic eruption response with that of the Covid-19 by lending support to the taxi drivers and public transport operators, with items to help then practise health and safety measures during their daily interfacing with the public.

Relief supplies came from a number of sources to the SVG Red Cross for distribution to evacuation centres and generally to persons who were displaced.

Training central to IASVG programme

THE RECENTLY INSTALLED Insurance Association of SVG (IASVG) has fully committed itself to the continuous upliftment of standards in the insurance industry here in SVG. This they hope to achieve working in close collaboration with the Insurance Institute of SVG. This focus was emphasized by president of the IASVG Mrs. Villette Browne, at the culmination of a 3-week long virtual training programme for stakeholders in the industry. The training ran from September 14 — 29, 2021. Topics covered included: Introduction to Insurance, Motor Crash Investigations, Property Adjusting and Managing Customer Expectations.

President Browne stressed that the Insurance Market was

an ever expanding one in scope, size and sophistication.

Hence, the need for training and development in the industry internally and externally will be central to the Association’s programme for the 2021-2022 period.

President Browne further pointed to the aspects of relationship building, profile enhancement, industry standardization and community outreach as other areas of focus during the period.

She concluded that the IASVG will endeavour to ensure that the local sector keeps up to date with the developing trends regionally and internationally. She

Football coaches pursue C Licence certification COACHES assigned to the various representative St Vincent and the Grenadines Football teams, along with those attached to the ten Premier Division clubs under the aegis of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF), are getting their knowledge of the sport enhanced.

This, as the coaches are currently involved in a course leading to a Concacaf C Licence certification.

The course, facilitated by local instructors only, had its official opening ceremony last Saturday night, via the Zoom platform.

The hosting of the C Licence Course is the first for St Vincent and

the Grenadines.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Director of Technical Matters of the SVGFF, Theon Gordon, lauded the occasion.

“In the past we had to message Fifa, we had to call Concacaf to get an opportunity to have one of these courses… Now the process is: We create our calendar, put out the information, we educate, we certify, he boasted.

Gordon, who is also a Concacaf Instructor, noted that given the autonomy to host such a course, had to do with being able to tailor the process to fit into the environment and culture of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Currently, we are able to do the D Licence and the C Licence, hopefully later on we are able to the B and also the A Licence …Once you get the C licence here you will be able to work anywhere across the region, anywhere across Concacaf, with this C licence, that is within the context in which we are functioning,” Gordon explained.

Addressing the coaches, Gordon implored: “This is an opportunity for you to become a coach educator, to become a national team coach, whatever you see in your horizon as you would like in Football… Think bigger than that … I could be

the next Technical Director, I could be the next regional director.”

He cautioned, though, that the course will be not a “cake walk. … It is a high level that is expected and I know you guys have the potential to do well.”

Gordon, along with his predecessor — Keith Ollivierre, Kevin Richardson, Andrew Bramble, Roxell John, Alfred Grant, Wayde Jackson, Kendale Mercury and Ralph Stowe, are the instructors for the course.

During the month of November, Kittian Lenny Lake, a Fifa Technical Consultant, is expected to travel to St Vincent

and the Grenadines to help assess the participants.

The course will be held virtually three times per week, Sundays, Mondays and Wednesday, from 730pm, with practical sessions slated from time to time.

The participants will be required to Plan and Prepare a Session, Deliver the Plan, Deliver the Session and Reflect and present Reflection.

Paralympics: Call for greater awareness RICKY-DEANE ALEXANDER is calling for greater awareness of Paralympic Sports generally here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Alexander, a Special Olympics trainer, a qualified swimming coach and a graduate of university level training in Physical Education in Hungary, was the coach of swimmer Dexroy Crease, who became the first Paralympian from SVG when he competed in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, 24 August 2021 — 5

“First things first — Paralympics is not just about swimming; it involves as many sports that are played internationally; it is a big thing worldwide,” Alexander shared.

He was quick to explain that training plays a major part in preparing the athletes and called for more coaching education as it relates to Paralympic Sports.

“A parent might have a child who they might not consider as someone who can do well in the sports. But look at Dexroy Crease — he was assessed as physically challenged - an S9 classification — but it also caters to the intellectual, sensory challenged persons who all have to be classified,” Alexander referenced.

Alexander continues to work Paralympian Dexroy Crease who, having tasted international competition, has his eyes set on competing at that level for some time to come.

KEITH JOSEPH, the General Secretary of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC), is set to play a vital role in ensuring that the 2022 Junior Carifta Games takes place.

There were no Junior Carifta Games in 2020 and 2021 because of the prevailing coronavirus, but NACAC is determined that the next edition goes ahead, with Jamaica earmarked to be host.

Accordingly, Sands and Joseph will journey to Jamaica to meet with the leadership of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), the Minister of Sports and the planning committee of the Games.

The last edition of the Junior Carifta Games was held in the Cayman Islands in 2019.

Bermuda was set to be the venue for the Games in 2020, which was later postponed to 2021.

Efforts by the NACAC to avoid another postponement were heightened when Guyana, which was set to host the Games in 2022, indicated they could no longer do so.

Joseph commented that NACAC is very conscious of the devastating impact of the Covid19 pandemic on the Carifta family, and understands the economic challenges that are involved in attempting to host the Games in the current environment, but has a commitment to the region’s athletes.

The Junior Carifta Games which began in 1972, has emerged as the Caribbean’s premiere Track and Field Meet and has been the breeding ground for several world athletes.

Most people will be following their favourite activity as they unfold internationally. Football fans have their choices including the qualifying games to the Qatar 2021 World Cup. The various athletic events take place as the build up to the next Olympics gets into gear. The West Indies team continues to be a topic of discussion Our history provides the platform for the drama unfolds on a Caribbean stage where the script is ever changing. But what never knows what it will be. Perhaps it’s a spiritual inheritance, for which region in the world has such a divergence of culture so enmeshed within a narrow corridor.

We have accomplished a degree of cordiality and have distinguished our credentials as a society of worth, but too often we show values of a crude nature.

Sometimes one wonders what has influenced our characteristics. We are concerned about animal rights, and rightly so, for there has to be coexistence. And that includes the trees.

But as a calypsonian uttered in a Vincentian calypso, “They protecting parrot and neglect me.”

That was years ago when Christopher ‘Froggo’ Wyllie, then attached to the Department of Forestry, went beyond his call of physical duty to impart his heart and soul to his profession.

Whatever the circumstances, you have to keep your head above water. Or if you can get out of the water and find some foundation where you will stand on solid ground.

You have to make that move towards not just your survival but your elevation.

There will be support. You must find it and make sure you stay on course. With your resourcefulness, there is the strength that will take you out of life’s trials.
