A Relationship Land Mine Spending, unending consumption, credit cards, online shopping, ATMs, college loans, refinancing deals, and online money transfers have made managing finances a shell game.

Debt is at an all-time high, and it is affecting the quality of relationships. For millennials who are marrying later, both partners bring financial histories into the relationship. Some enter marriage with undisclosed financial obligations. This avoidance of debt disclosure can erode trust and may even feel like a betrayal, deconstructing the fabric of the relationship.

Not only do we enter relationships with debt, but we also carry unspoken expectations about how we make, spend, save, and give money.

We have had years of modeling from how our family of origin managed resources.

Money affects choices, identities, self-worth, sense of freedom and security, emotions, hopes, dreams, and expectations. Conversations about money are shaped by intention, unspoken motives, daily decisions, activities, and a belief system that remains untangled in our consciousness or inadequately verbalized. This makes finances the third rail of relationship management and a tightrope of delicate discussions.

Research shows that most adults enter marriage with some form of debt. Dr. Scott Stanley, a professor of psychology at the University of Denver, notes that “It is pretty common to find out that the person you married has more debt and less income than you realized.” This is a “negative dowry” effect.

There used to be such a thing as a dowry, defined as property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage. Also, a “hope chest” was a common piece of furniture where women would add items of value or family heirlooms to bring into their marriage for legacy building. These traditions are a thing of the past. How a couple manages this “new normal” predicts the success or failure of their relationship.

To overcome this landmine, there must be emotional safety in the relationship, defined as the ability to be totally honest, vulnerable, and be able to discuss this issue openly. Stanley recommends that couples view

themselves as two separate individuals with a shared third identity: me, you, and us. A way to defuse conflict when both individuals are working and sharing duties at home is a shared bank account, with each partner having their own accounts that are used by each individual but disclosed to one another with trust and transparency. For relationships to be successful, both partners need to contribute equally in the form of finance and effort. If one person feels that he or she is the only one contributing to the success of the union, resentment will run high, and the relationship

equilibrium will be negatively affected.

On a positive note, today’s couples have an amazing opportunity to design and reimagine how their relationship is going to operate, not having to align with the roles of the past. Ensuring the relationship is defined by full disclosure, honesty, transparency, and respect is the path to success. There are many online resources that teach financial literacy skills. Once a couple has these skills and agree on how to operationalize what they earn, spend, save, and donate, peace about money will prevail. When you’re a few minutes early to a meeting people think you’re respectful and professional.

But when you’re an hour early they think you don’t have much going on. Then they give you something to do.

I’ve been worried that’s going to happen to me. A few days ago my husband and I returned from a trip. But my watch, which is also my fitness device, stayed stuck in the time zone we’d been traveling in. And it’s not the first time it’s done it. Forgive me for saying this, but it’s really starting to tick me off.

When we’ve traveled in the past it automatically updated to local time when I synced it with my phone.

But over the past year it’s been waiting a day or two to update. Maybe it suffers from jet lag.

Thankfully I’m a very observant person except when I’m not. So I’ve always caught on after only a few

controlling entity. It will be the “government” initially but will eventually devolve into a monarch, a tyrant, the politburos.

We have historical records of central control’s rise to power and their inevitable demise.

Just look at Communist Russia, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan during WWII. Even with this factual evidence we see Socialism and Communism Gain footing. Today we witness the rise of central control’s in Europe, Canada, California and New York. The threat is real, the intent exists, but so does the solution. The battle is ongoing, never won conclusively, only held at bay, but it can be lost if we individuals stop resisting and give up. Our path to success is adherence to a Principle and that Principle is perfectly articulated in the Declaration of Independence. It is the fact that our Creator endowed each individual with liberty.

The only entity that can stand against this tyranny is the citizen, the true individual.

My iPhone automatically updated the time zone and sprung ahead to Daylight Saving Time with no effort on my part. My ancient laptop has always ignored time zones but it updated to Daylight Saving Time on its own accord. But my fancy watch

refused to do anything at all.

Consequently all three of my devices showed different times. And you know that old saying: A person with one watch knows what time it is.

A person with two watches is never sure. And a person with three watches remembers fondly those days when we could call the operator and ask, “Correct time please?”

On our most recent trip my watch managed to change time zones as we traveled east but it didn’t change back when we got home. I tried syncing it many times but it continued to insist it was an hour later than it was.

Former Republican Greg Lopez will appear on the general election ballot as an unaffiliated candidate for Colorado governor Lifelong Republican Greg Lopez has been certified as an independent candidate for governor who will appear on the general election ballot in the November 3, 2026 election, according to a statement from the Colorado Secretary of State’s office released on July 28. Lopez is a former mayor of Parker who became a short-term GOP congressman after he won a special election on June 25, 2024 to fill out the final six months of the congressional term of former Congressional District 4 U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who resigned from that office on March 22, 2024.

Lopez ran for the GOP nomination for governor in 2018 and again in 2022. He and his 2026 running mate, Taralyn Romero, will appear on the November 3 general election ballot as candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, along with Democrat Phil Weiser and his running mate, Jefferson County

Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper, and Republican candidate Victor Marx and his running mate, retired U.S. Marine Colonel George Markert.

In order to be certified as an unaffiliated candidate for Colorado governor, Lopez had to submit at least 1,000 valid signatures from registered voters, regardless of party affiliation or non-affiliation, in each of the state’s eight congressional districts, which he did.

The last announcement from the Secretary of State’s office on July 28 was that unaffiliated candidate for Congressional District 4, Timothy M. Veldhuizen, had submitted an insufficient number of valid signatures

to run for Congress in November, so the race in CD4 will be between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and Democratic challenger retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Eileen Laubacher.

In El Paso County-based Congressional District 5, where Republican U. S. Rep. Jeff Crank is completing his freshman term as a Member of Congress, his Democratic challenger, former U.S. Army Captain Jessica Killin released results from a poll conducted July 16-21

by Democratic firm Global Strategy Group that showed a dead heat, with Crank being favored by 45% of those polled and Killin being favored by 44%; 11% said they were undecided. According to the Denver Gazette, Andrew Baumann of Global Strategy Group, “whose firm has a strong track record polling Colorado voters, said in a polling memo that the traditionally Republican district remains highly competitive,” with Killin “in a strong position to unseat Crank in November.”

Gov. Jared Polis, whose political career began in 2000 with his election to the Colorado State Board of Education, made becoming No. 1 in education a goal when he first took office as governor on January 8, 2019.

USNWR attributed Colorado’s top ranking to gains in overall educational attainment, improved graduation rates for two-year degree programs, and expanded preschool enrollment, a key goal and accomplishment for Polis.

Citing Colorado’s 179 school districts, 1,877 pre-K through 12th-grade

schools, and 870,793 students across the state from diverse backgrounds, including 36% who are Hispanic and Latino, USNWR noted that “Colorado’s 85.6% high school graduation rate in the 2024-2025 school year was its highest in nearly a decade.”

USNWR specifically highlighted Colorado’s universal preschool program, launched in 2023, which served more than 45,000 children during the 2025-2026 school year. The program has been viewed as an important tool for reducing poverty. Only three other states, along with the District of Columbia, offer universal pre-K without limitations.

In higher education, USNWR reported that Colorado’s nearly 100

colleges and universities, including 31 public institutions, served 273,705 students in 2024. The report also noted that “the community college system is Colorado’s largest provider of higher education, comprising 13 institutions that serve more than 130,000 students.”

The share of students graduating from Colorado’s two-year degree programs within three years rose from 42.9% among those who began in 2020 to 54.5% among those who enrolled in 2021.

John Albreight, executive vice chancellor of the Colorado Community College System, credited “the way that the whole higher education system in the state is responding and evolving to the needs of learners today,” as well as the continuum

of education from early childhood through college, as a key to the success of the community college program.

The state’s dual-enrollment program is also especially beneficial, giving high school students the opportunity to earn college credits and, in some cases, graduate high school with an associate degree or industry certificate at zero cost.

Colorado has long been recognized for its high proportion of college-educated residents.

USNWR cited U.S. Census Bureau data showing that “Colorado’s share of adults over 25 with an associate degree or higher rose from 54.6% in 2023 to 55.9% in 2024, bumping up the state to number one in educational attainment,” and placing

USNWR also mentioned Care Forward Colorado, a program that allows students to earn free healthcare certificates in certain areas, including emergency medical technicians, as part of an effort to address the health care worker shortage.

Gov. Polis said the state’s achievement reflects years of prioritizing education, noting, “We’ve been able to produce better outcomes for Coloradans, close the opportunity gap and help power the private sector’s success.”

That differs from the pattern in many other states.

“Colorado is very much middle-of-the-pack in terms of population growth,” Marquez said.

He added that “mobility overall has lessened; fewer people are making large moves,” and noted, “Since 2020, we have seen a lot more population growth in the southern states.”

Asked why people choose some states over others, Marquez said, “Our primary data source

tracks movement really well. We don’t get a sense of why people move, so we’re forced to guess, looking at the factors that we know are historically linked to why people move. Jobs and housing availability and affordability are the big reasons.

In the south and in the Midwest, housing continues to be more affordable.

At the same time, job growth, particularly in the south, is high in areas in which Colorado has historically been strong and continues to be a leader in, but there’s just more competition.” He cited the Carolinas as an example, saying that “a lot of the job growth is in similar sectors that Colorado has historically seen, profes-

sional and tech service jobs.”

On immigration, Marquez said that before 2020, Colorado attracted significant international migration, though about 80% of in-migration still came from U.S. residents.

From 2022 to 2024, that pattern changed sharply, with foreign-born residents accounting for more than 90% of new residents. In 2025, he said, immigration essentially stopped.

Marquez also discussed birth rates, which have declined in Colorado and nationally since 2007.

Among people ages 15 to 24, he linked the decline to modern family-planning tools. Fertility rates have remained stable

among people ages 30 to 34, he said, and have increased among those older than 35.

Colorado’s fastest-growing population group is people over 65.

“When we think about what Colorado is going to look like in the next 10-20 years, most of the uncertainty comes from domestic migration of young working-age individuals,” Marquez said, adding, “How the working-age population is going to grow is really hard to tell. Where we have a lot more certainty is with the population that is 65 and older. That group is certainly going to grow.

Their mobility has historically been a lot less (so they are aging in place).

That is something we need to plan for because we see that growth in every scenario.”

Asked about the implications of growth among retirement-age adults, Marquez said, “We are seeing increases in labor force participation rates in that traditional retirement age, so the potential for activating individuals in the work force who are in the younger years of the traditional retirement age, who (want) to still be in the work force…how can we incorporate (them) so as to continue to leverage their talents?” He added that one job sector growing despite modest overall job growth across the U.S. is health services, “and a lot of that is being propped up by in-home health services, in part because the fastest growing population is the 75-84 group.”

n July 17, Greeley Police Department announced that six people from Greeley and Denver had been arrested on narcotics charges after members of the Weld County Drug Task Force and Denver Police Department SWAT served search warrants at two Greeley locations and one

Greeley PD identified Nadine Caldera of Greeley and Christy Speaker of Denver as two of the primary sources of supply suspected of distributing methamphetamine. First Bob Lob Pickleball Tournament raises $16,000 for pancreatic cancer research Competition benefits Wings of Hope, helps family find meaning in father’s death

M

aureen Shul, founder of Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and Kellee Ellis, co-founder of the Bob K Memorial Foundation, found common ground, having both lost a parent to pancreatic cancer. The first Bob Lob Pickleball Tournament on May 30 raised more than $16,000 for pancreatic cancer research.

“Everybody can play pickleball,” said Kellee Ellis, co-founder of the Bob Lob Pickleball Tournament, a benefit for Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

“My dad really loved sports,” Ellis said of her father, Bob Kummer, the tournament’s namesake, who was known to successfully “lob” the pickleball to the back of the court. “He was a big golfer as well, but in the last year before he died, he really got into pickleball. On his birthday, that’s what he wanted us to do—go play pickleball with him.”

Even as the multi-generational Kummer family exemplified how the distinctively named racket sport has become increasingly popular among all age groups, sadly, the family has also learned how anyone—even a healthy lifelong athlete and a younger recent retiree—can find a formidable opponent in the most ravaging of deadly cancers.

Just months after complaining of stomach pain, Kummer was in hospice care. Although doctors initially gave him six months to a year, Kummer died two months after his diagnosis.

“It’s crazy to think how fast pancreatic cancer can start and spread so quickly,” Ellis said, noting that her 66-year-old father was only a few years into retirement at the time. “Before that, my dad was golfing every day, mountain biking, playing pickleball. He was the most healthy, athletic person I know. He was really taking advantage of all the outdoor things. He took it like a champ, as much as anyone could, but it was really hard.”

After Kummer lost his hard-fought, yet brief, battle in 2023, the family went looking for a way to process their grief and find something positive to do with it. It did not take long for the Kummers to figure out how to turn Bob’s competitive spirit and love for pickleball into family fun and family teamwork in the battle against a formidable opponent—pancreatic cancer.

Enter the Bob K Memorial Foundation and the first Bob Lob Pickleball Tournament, which was held May 30 at the Southpark Pickleball Complex in Highlands Ranch. The Kummers recruited mostly friends and family to play in the first

event. Not only did the inaugural tournament sell out, the family managed to draft sponsorships from a few local businesses.

When it came to finding a worthy beneficiary, it didn’t take long.

“I just started Googling and I found Wings of Hope,” Ellis said.

The pickleball organizer was soon in contact with Maureen Shul, the nonprofit’s founder and executive director. The two would soon become kindred spirits, having

both lost a parent to pancreatic cancer in sudden whirlwinds of diagnosis and loss.

“I told her my story and said we want to do more,” Ellis said. “We would love to help the research behind pancreatic cancer, help other families, anything we can do for people who went through what we went through. Because that was brutal.”

The first Bob Lob raised more than $16,000 to support the groundbreaking pancreatic cancer research taking place at the University of Colora-

do Cancer Center in Aurora.

In addition to raising funds to support the research, the Kummer family found meaning in the memories and hopefulness created by the first Bob Lob. “I enjoyed seeing my dad’s friends at the tournament and hearing the impact he had on their lives, including sharing his love of pickleball,” said Joe Kummer, Bob’s son.

“The pickleball tournament was a wonderful way for my family to remember my dad and give back to an awesome cause,” said Jill Kroecker, Bob’s daughter.

“All I could think about was how much dad would have loved playing in an event like this and how much it would have meant to him,” said Brad Kummer, Bob’s son.

Maureen Shul, who founded Wings of Hope after losing her mother and brother to the disease, was delighted and honored to welcome the Bob Lob Pickleball Tournament into the extended family of Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

“It touched my heart to see how the entire Kummer family organized such a fun and successful event to honor their father’s memory,” she said. “It is always inspiring to see how people are motivated to give purpose to their grief.

The Kummer family has become part of the effort funding research that will improve patient outcomes and prevent others from going through the same sad journey.”

The second annual Bob Lob is scheduled for June 5, 2027.

Being asked to present at a HOF is a big honor The news that Drew Brees asked Broncos coach Sean Payton to be his presenter in Canton at Sunday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies— and Payton’s emotional reaction—made bigger news, at least in Denver, than the selection of Brees itself.

Brees made the request in a video call to his former coach, and the exchange was filmed by a New Orleans Saints staffer. Brees played the most productive seasons of his 20-year career in New Orleans under Payton, now in his fourth season as Broncos coach.

“Honest to God, I can’t believe you just did that,” Payton said tearfully.

“It’s awesome.”

“I can’t wait. I love you,” Brees replied.

To anyone who has not been part of an HOF induction ceremony, the reaction is likely some form of, “What’s the big deal? Payton’s not the one being inducted.”

But, as one who has

experienced Payton’s role, I can tell you it means a lot, especially if you’re someone who was in a management or supervisory role and at times had to make decisions that may have been unpopular with those in a subordinate role.

Coaches do that a lot.

I was attending a Rockies afternoon game many years ago—with my boss, oddly enough—when I my cell phone began alerting me to an incoming call. I excused myself to find out who it was, and why they needed to speak to me just then.

Turned out someone I once hired and had supervised at a couple of newspapers was going to be inducted into the Denver Press Club Hall of Fame, and he wanted to know if I’d be his presenter.

We’d had our moments, including across the bargaining table in union negotiations, but a collegial friendship endured.

I was thrilled to be asked. It meant that he felt I had contributed to

his success despite the times we disagreed.

So, I can appreciate how Pateon felt when Brees asked him.

“Listen, it caught me off guard,” the strongwilled coach said. “I have an Android phone. I had never really gotten a Face-Time (type of call).

“It was just a lot, being 15 years together.”

Payton explained that the bond between a coach and quarterback can sometimes be overlooked, particularly because those partnerships do not always conclude on good terms.

“It was just a lot—15 years together,” Payton said. “A lot of times, for a number of reasons, those relationships—quarterback-coach—you kind of take for granted.

“Yet sometimes, oftentimes, they don’t end the way you want them to end. I’m proud that it ended the way he wanted it to. I’m excited for him.”

Payton said he was preparing to play golf with a group of friends when the call arrived. His wife and the others already knew what Brees planned to

ask.

“As a coach, it’s an honor that someone would ask you to do that.”

Actually, it’s an honor for anyone in any profession.

Payton and Brees arrived in New Orleans in 2006 and helped transform the Saints into regular contenders. Their tenure included a victory in Super Bowl XLIV, where Brees was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Brees retired after the 2020 season with 80,358 passing yards, 7,152 completions, and 571 touchdown passes— second in NFL history all-time in all three categories.

Payton will fly to Canton after Saturday’s practice, accompanied by other Broncos staffers who were with him and Brees in New Orleans.

His remarks aren’t official yet, but he reflected on landing Brees over the Miami Dolphins after San Diego released him.

Payton said he got lost while driving Brees and his wife Brittany around New Orleans. It was after

Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.

“I remember looking in the rearview mirror, and Brittany was dozing off,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘I should just take them to the airport now.”

But Payton was misjudging the situation.

Brees and his wife both embraced the storm-ravaged city.

Payton admits to wondering if he’d made a mistake when Brees took the field for his first pre-season camp with the Saints. Recovering from a torn rotator cuff, Brees began slowly.

“I said, ‘I’m tired of seeing Roger Goodell’s name on the ball when he throws it,’” Payton remarked, describing the lack of zip on Brees’ first passes.

Lexus has a simple slogan: “Experience Amazing.” After spending a week behind the wheel of the 2026 Lexus IS 350 F SPORT AWD, it’s easy to understand why.

Manufactured in Tahara, Japan, the IS 350 is a sleek, low-slung sports sedan that combines luxury, performance and everyday practicality into one handsome package. Finished in striking Wind paint with an eye-catching red interior, the four-door sedan sits confidently on 19-inch alloy wheels, giving it the stance of a true performance machine.

Power comes from Lexus’ proven 3.5-liter V-6 engine producing 311 horsepower. Driving through the Colorado Rockies was the highlight of my

week. Climbing steep grades, I frequently shifted through the gears manually, using Sport and Sport Plus modes to maximize performance. Coming back down the mountains, Eco mode provided relaxed cruising while improving fuel economy.

One of my favorite features was the power moonroof. On a beautiful Colorado afternoon, I pushed the roof open and enjoyed the mountain sunshine while watching welcome rain

clouds build over a state that has experienced persistent drought conditions. Sometimes the best part of driving is simply enjoying the scenery.

The IS 350 is designed for spirited driving, but it also reminded me how much highway travel has changed. Many vehicles today cruise well above posted speed limits thanks to increasingly powerful engines. On one recent trip home, I encountered a major truck accident that blocked

a mountain highway for several hours. Experiences like that reinforce just how valuable today’s advanced safety technology has become.

Lexus equips the IS 350 with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane assistance, forward collision protection and numerous driver-assistance features that help make every trip safer and less stressful.  Handling is another strong point. The F SPORT suspension keeps the sedan firmly planted through curves while maintaining a comfortable ride for everyday commuting.

Dual exhaust outlets hint at the performance available under the hood without sacrificing the refinement that has become a Lexus trademark.

INTERESTINGPLACES INTERESTING PLACES Adak—At the Edge of America My son Chris had always wanted to visit Adak, Alaska. Until he mentioned it, I had never even heard of the place. It didn’t take long to understand why it had captured his imagination.

Adak Island is one of the most remote places in the United States. It lies far out in the Aleutian Islands, farther west than Hawaii and closer to Russia than to Seattle.

Once a bustling military installation, today Adak is home to only a few dozen year-round residents. The rest is a windswept ghost town of abandoned buildings, empty streets, and reminders of a very different era.

personnel passed through Adak. Japanese aircraft even bombed the island, making it one of the few American locations attacked during the war.

After World War II, Adak remained strategically important during the Cold War, serving as a key military outpost in the North Pacific.

As geopolitical priorities shifted and technology advanced, its military role gradually faded. Yet history has a way of repeating itself.

With renewed tensions involving Russia and China, military planners have again taken an interest in Adak’s strategic location, a reminder that geography never changes.

Outside town, Adak is rugged, wet, and relentlessly windy. The weather can shift by the minute, yet the island’s stark beauty remains constant. The wind rarely seems to stop, and the crashing surf, treeless hills, and endless gray skies lend the island an almost otherworldly feel.

Getting there is part of the adventure.

is canceled—or you miss it—you wait for the next one. Delays are common in the unpredictable weather of the North Pacific.

The flight from Anchorage takes just over three hours, yet it feels as if you’ve traveled to another world. Adak is among the westernmost communities in the United States, located at the very edge of North America.

We stayed in a converted military barracks townhouse, one of many remnants of Adak’s military past. There are no traditional hotels, only a couple of restaurants—one of which was closed during our visit.

Even the town’s only grocery store was closed.

Despite its isolation, Adak hasn’t been left entirely behind by modern technology. Residents now rely largely on Starlink satellite internet, keeping them connected from one of the most remote communities in America.

We spent our days exploring the ghost town, wandering through abandoned buildings that still hint at the island’s former importance.

Decades of fierce Aleutian storms have taken a toll.

Many empty buildings are slowly surrendering to the weather, with broken windows, collapsing roofs, and rooms exposed to the wind and rain. One of the strangest sights was an abandoned McDonald’s, complete with a drive-through menu board displaying prices from decades ago.

The highlight of the trip was renting e-bikes and exploring the island beyond town. The electric assist made the steep hills surprisingly easy to climb, allowing us to cover far more ground than we could on foot.

drone and captured spectacular aerial footage that revealed just how isolated and beautiful Adak truly is.

Knowing food options would be limited, we packed supplies that could fit in carry-on luggage—pasta, powdered milk, snacks, and other basics—and cooked most of our meals in the apartment. One evening, we enjoyed burgers at the local combination bar, pool hall, and restaurant, one of the few gathering places left in town.

Fishing draws many visitors to Adak, even though it wasn’t on our agenda. For those seeking even more adventure, charter boats venture into the legendary Bering Sea, made famous by the television series Deadliest Catch.

Adak isn’t a destination for luxury travelers or those seeking a packed itinerary. It’s a place for people who appreciate history, solitude, dramatic landscapes, and the feeling of standing at the very edge of America.

It is also a reminder that places can outlast the reasons they were built, taking on entirely new identities while quietly preserving the stories of their past.

As Chris and I boarded our flight back to Anchorage, I assumed I’d never again find myself in a place quite so remote. Visiting Adak had been his idea, and I was grateful he introduced me to a corner of America I never knew existed.

Little did I know that within a year I would also stand at the opposite extreme of North America— the continent’s easternmost point. But that’s a story for another day.
