Operationalizing a concept: Turning intentions into life-changing skills We thought we knew how to wash our hands…until COVID. The CDC spent millions of dollars on a campaign to operationalize that simple skill. Posters displayed in public bathrooms across the country broke down the components of handwashing. First you do this, then this, then sing Happy Birthday for 30 seconds, then…

Great ideas can inspire, but they transform lives only when put into action. This process, known as operationalizing a concept, turns an abstract idea into specific, measurable, and teachable behaviors that people can practice every day. It is the difference between knowing and doing. The same principle applies to building healthy relationships. Nearly everyone agrees that strong marriages, families, friendships, and workplaces are valuable. Yet telling someone to “have a better relationship” is no more helpful than telling them to “be healthier” without explaining how. Healthy relationships are built on practical skills. Love means listening without interrupting. Respect means speaking kindly, even during disagreements. Trust means keeping promises, telling the truth, and following through on commitments. Commitment means showing up consistently in both joyful and difficult seasons. Forgiveness means learning to apologize sincerely, accept responsibility, and extend grace.

These are not merely ideals; they are behaviors that can be taught, practiced, reinforced, and improved.

Relationship education programs have shown that communication, conflict management, emotional regulation, problem-solving, empathy, and financial cooperation are learnable skills. As individuals master these competencies, they are better equipped to build lasting friendships, healthy romantic relationships, stable marriages, and nurturing family environments. These same interpersonal skills also translate directly into workforce success. Employees who communicate effectively, resolve conflicts professionally, collaborate with colleagues, demonstrate reliability, and lead with emotional intelligence are often more productive and more likely to advance in their careers.

Operationalizing life skills also strengthens goal setting and personal achievement. Rather than encouraging someone to “be successful,” effective skills break success into manageable actions: set clear goals, create written plans, monitor progress, seek feedback, build resilience after setbacks, and celebrate incremental improvements. Each step moves success from an aspiration to an attainable reality.

The long-term benefits extend

far beyond individual happiness. Stable families and healthy relationships foster stronger communities, improved educational outcomes for children, higher workforce participation, better physical and mental health, and lower poverty rates. Individuals with strong relationship and life skills are better prepared to navigate challenges, maintain employment, build supportive social networks, and raise resilient children. These outcomes collectively contribute to what Harvard researchers describe as human flourishing: living a life characterized by happiness and life satisfaction, mental and physical health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, committed, supportive relationships, and financial and material security.

Ideas alone rarely change lives. Skills do. When we operationalize the principles that matter most, whether preventing disease, strengthening marriages, building families, developing careers, or pursuing meaningful goals, we create practical pathways that empower people to flourish.

This skills training starts with children. Teaching them the components of a healthy friendship and operationalizing respect, kindness, and service to others is essential. Time to Feed the Horses

Every newspaper publisher has a few people who leave lasting footprints on a career. For me, one of those was Colorado Poet Laureate Thomas Hornsby Ferril.

Before my family moved to Denver in 1980, I founded and published the Craig Daily Press, transforming a small weekly newspaper into a daily serving northwest Colorado. My work with the Colorado Press Association often brought me to Denver, where I stayed at the historic Oxford Hotel.

The Oxford, beautifully restored by Denver preservationist Dana Crawford, was one of my favorite places. Built by the same visionaries who created the Brown Palace, it stood only a block from Union Station.

Preschool fundraiser at Governor’s Residence Our Lady of Loreto Wings Gala Raises More Than $65,000 for Student Scholarships The Our Lady of Loreto community gathered at the Colorado Governor’s Residence for the annual Wings Gala, themed Angels Among Us, an evening dedicated to celebrating the individuals whose generosity, service, and commitment strengthen the school and parish community.

The event brought together parents, alumni, parishioners, and supporters for a night of fellowship and philanthropy.

Former Colorado Governor Bill Owens and former First Lady Frances Owens attended in support of the gala, which their daughter, Monica Owens Beauprez, co-chaired.

Through sponsorships, donations, auction proceeds, and event participation, the gala raised more than $65,000 for the school’s scholarship fund. The proceeds will help ensure that an Our Lady of Loreto located in Foxfield (Arapahoe County), education remains accessible to students and families for years to come.

Three unaffiliated candidates for U.S. Congress have been certified for the November 3 general election

On July 24, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced that three unaffiliated candidates had submitted a sufficient number of verified signatures to appear on the general election ballot for the United States Congress on November 3, 2026.

Two GV office buildings bought by UC Health for $19.4 million

In mid-July, UC Health finalized its acquisition of an eight-acre property consisting of two connected office buildings in Greenwood Village at 6550 and 6560 Greenwood Plaza Blvd. The property is just south of Rocky Mountain Junior Achievement’s GV headquarters.

Although the purchase price of $19.36 million for the two buildings is less than half the $44 million it last traded for on February 24, 2005, the good news for Greenwood Village is that UC Health spokesperson Kelli Christensen told Denver Business

Said Christensen, “This consolidation will reduce

expenses and allow for adequate parking, modern office amenities, energy efficiency and easy access to public transportation for our employees.”

The three-floor building at 6550 Greenwood Plaza Blvd., built in 1998, contains 69,546 square feet of office space. The five-story building at 6560 Greenwood Plaza Blvd. built in 1999, has 115,805 square feet, and the parking structure, with three levels , is 178,104 square feet, according to Arapahoe County, which valued the entire eight-acre property at $25 million in 2026.

Colorado primary turnout reached 36% among active voters Two truths define primary elections: They shape many important outcomes, but voters often do not recognize their significance.

On Colorado’s June 30 primary election day, the state had 4,088,906 active registered voters, a figure that has remained largely unchanged over the past two years. In this election, 1,444,304 ballots were cast statewide, producing an official turnout of 36%.

By comparison, the official turnout in the most recent statewide election— the November 5, 2024, presidential election—was 73%.

The gubernatorial contests held on June 30 show why primary voting matters. In the Democratic race, Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated U.S. Senator Michael Bennet by 122,321 votes—14% of the 888,597 ballots cast.

Those who follow national

news likely noticed that result surprised many observers across the country who assumed that Bennet, a three-term U.S. Senator, was unbeatable in a statewide race.

Although 14% is a substantial margin, only 48% of active Democrats and 20% of active unaffiliated voters participated in the Democratic primary for governor. Another way of describing the level of participation is that Weiser received 505,459 votes and Bennet received 383,138 votes in a race in which they were each eligible to receive over three million votes—from all the Democratic and unaffiliated active registered voters.

The choice mattered, in part because both Weiser and Bennet were highly qualified, by any measure, and ran aggressive campaigns; and because the Democratic nominee is more likely than not to be-

come Colorado’s next governor. A Republican has not won a general election for governor in Colorado since 2002.

The Republican decision was, by some measures, even more consequential. To give the GOP a realistic chance in the general election, the party needed a nominee likely to appeal to Colorado’s 2,072,121 active unaffiliated voters, who make up 51% of active voters.

The state’s 909,647 active registered Republicans account for 22% of the total.

State Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer had the strongest traditional governing résumé among the three Republican primary candidates. She served 19 years as a county commissioner across two stints, six years as a state senator, and as a cabinet member under Colorado’s last Republican governor, Bill Owens. As a result, many viewed her as

the Republican most likely to attract unaffiliated voters in the general election.

As we know, she lost to newcomer Victor Marx, who has no government experience. He clearly appealed to many voters, and his fundraising far exceeded that of Kirkmeyer and the other GOP primary candidate, State Rep. Scott Bottoms.

Official totals show that 371,181 active Republican voters, or 41%, cast primary ballots. By contrast, only 28% of active unaffiliated voters statewide, participated in both the Democratic and Republican primaries combined, and just 28% of them— 164,339 people—chose Republican ballots. The other 72% chose Democratic primary ballots.

Mathematically, the Republican candidates were eligible to receive up to two million unaffiliated votes and over 900,000

Republican votes.

In all, 523,078 voters participated in selecting the Republican candidate for governor. Marx received 208,458 of those votes, while Kirkmeyer received 205,992—a margin of just 0.6%. And that’s how Victor Marx became the Republican candidate for Colorado governor on November 3, 2026.

According to Unite AmericaInstitute.org, in 2024, 87% of Congressional races were decided in primary elections by 7% of the eligible voters across the country. One reason is that, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 16 states allow unaffiliated voters to participate in major party primaries, while 17 states’ major party primaries are partially or completely closed to unaffiliated voters.

Primary voting matters greatly.

The tournament brings together community members, local businesses, and public safety supporters for a day of golf with a purpose—investing in the men and women of the Aurora

Police Department.

The 18-hole tournament is scheduled to begin with an open range and breakfast burritos at 7 a.m., followed by an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Funds raised through the tournament will directly support the Aurora Police Department by providing equipment, education, and specialized training that fall outside the City’s operating budget. These investments help ensure Aurora officers have access to enhanced

tools and professional development opportunities that strengthen public safety and improve service to the community.

The Aurora Police Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Aurora Police Department through community partnerships and private philanthropy. The Foundation provides funding for equipment, training, education, wellness initiatives, and programs that

Denver sports team owners have big plans to revamp their properties The Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group, that includes former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, is planning to build a new, privately-funded stadium for the Denver Broncos in Burnham Yard located between Broadway, Santa Fe, and the South Platte River, near I-25.

It was announced last month that they have agreed to pay $45.8 million to the Colorado Department of Transportation for the 58-acre site and hope to begin construction there next year. Opening of the new stadium, with a retractable roof (Did someone say we could host a Super Bowl there?) and a surrounding entertainment district is targeted for the 2031 season.

In addition to the stadium, a 150-acre mixed use development, with five to seven million square feet of housing, hotels, office space, retail and restaurants, including an entertainment district, along with over 15 acres of parks and open open spaces, is planned for the area around the new football stadium. The development will be integrated with the RTD station at 10th Avenue & Osage Street, and will include bicycle and pedestrian paths, as well as a widened 8th Avenue.

Construction is planned to begin next year, with a grand opening in time for the 2031 NFL season.

Denver has emphasized it will invite community input for the planning of both the areas, Empower Field at Mile High and Burnham Yard.

Meanwhile, near Ball Arena, Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, with the blessing of the Denver City Council, has plans to build a bridge that would start on the west end of Speer Bou-

levard, just north of Auraria Parkway and span the length of the eight-lane road. The bridge over Speer would feature walkways on either side of a single steel arch.

The walkways would be 16 feet wide for pedestrians, bicyclists and scooterists. Each side will have both stairs and ADA-compliant ramps.

Commissioner Dahlkemper is a previous president of Jeffco Public School Board of Education and also served on the Colorado Fire Commission. Elected as county commissioner in Jeffco in 2018, she worked with Weiser to distribute part of the state’s $900 million opioid settlement as chair of the Gateway to the Rockies Opioid Council. Tap & Burger has closed at 4910 S. Newport Street in Belleview Station, although they will retain their operations in Denver’s LoHi and in Westminster. They reportedly said about the DTC location, “It’s just not where

At 41, James may regret passing up Jokic’s game LeBron James announced “The Decision, Part 3” last Friday. He’s “taking his talents” to Philadelphia this time.

“I’m not going for money,” he said, explaining why he signed for the bargain price of a paltry $8 million for two years—the league’s veteran minimum—compared to the $52.6 million the Los Angeles Lakers paid him last season.

It was so the 76ers could afford to field a championship-caliber team. And almost instantly, they became one of the betting favorites to win it all.

So, what does this mean for the Denver Nuggets?

And what could it have meant for James if he had chosen the Mile High City instead of the City of Brotherly Love?

The answer to Question No. 1 is that the Nuggets can now proceed with resolving Peyton Watson’s contract status, which they’d better do if they want to contend, and finalizing their roster for the 2026-27 season.

While Watson’s no LeBron, he’s almost 18 years younger and just beginning to develop into a standout player.

As for the second question, it depends on who answers.

After James informed L. A. (and the entire sports world) that he would not be returning to Tinseltown for a ninth National Basketball Association season there, rampant speculation ensued—much of it inspired by LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul.

Would he retire, as he said he might?

Would he opt for a second act with the Miami Heat, or a third with hometown Cleveland?

Or would he choose to move up the California coast and join the Golden State Warriors and his buddy, sharpshooter Steph Curry, in San Francisco?

The Minnesota Timberwolves were mentioned as a possible landing spot; San Antonio, where James could mentor precocious Victor Wembanyama, too.

And so was Denver, where he could team with the NBA’s contemporary great, Nikola Jokic, who AVERAGED a TRIPLE-DOUBLE last season.

It was even suggested that James’ close personal relationship with Nuggets president Josh Kroenke might give Denver some kind of leg up.

It also was pointed out that the Philadelphia 76ers were building a formidable starting five with the addition by blockbuster of Jaylen Brown, to go with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Joel Embiid.

In the end, that was the deciding factor.

On social media after announcing his decision, James said he was serious when he said he might retire.

“I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I was pretty sure I’d played my last game.”

But he concluded that, “I have more to give.”

James, who will be 42 this December, wasn’t born when Philly last won an NBA title.

He likes the idea of ending the Sixers’ 43-year drought in this, his record 24th season.

(Denver won its first, and so far only, NBA championship in 2023—after 47 years in the league—and wasn’t mentioned as a serious LeBron contender on Friday.)

“I still want to sacrifice,” he explained. “I still want to work.

I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”

If there are enough minutes and shots to keep all the stars happy, and if injury-prone Embiid and the others can stay on the floor for the entire grueling season, James might get his wish.

But here’s my take: The measure of any truly great player is his effect on his teammates. Does he make them better?

In Nikola Jokic’s case, that answer is unquestionably, resoundingly, “YES.” James himself was in that category for much of his long career. But at age 41, he’s more beneficiary than benefactor.

Translated, Jokic and his incredible passing could have shaved five years off James’ effective age as a player.

Achieving that with less wear and tear on an aging body would only have prolonged his physical prowess.

And restoring his performance to an earlier time would have enhanced his prospects for another NBA title.

Toyota continues to build on the Tacoma’s reputation as one of America’s most capable midsize pickups. The 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 Double Cab is a truck designed for work, recreation and everyday driving, with plenty of technology and comfort added to the package.

My test vehicle arrived in attractive Heritage Blue with final assembly completed in Baja California, Mexico. Power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eightspeed automatic transmission.

5 rules for investing in retirement Managing your portfolio with new risks and priorities in mind takes careful planning and regular monitoring.

Here are tips from Merrill on how to get started.

Heads up: Investing in retirement is not the same as investing for retirement.

All the smart strategies you used to accumulate enough for retirement will likely need adjusting as you enter the next chapter of your life.

Think of it as a shift in perspective from investing for the really long term to being much more prepared for shorter-term risks. “If anything, investing in retirement is a bit more complex, given the variety of potential risks and uncertainties,” says Anil Suri, a managing director in the Chief Investment Office (CIO) for Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank.

So where do you begin? It can start with a thorough portfolio review with your advisor, ideally at least three years before you retire. After you retire, plan to revisit your portfolio quarterly and keep these five investing guidelines in mind.

1. Review your asset allocation with new risks in mind.

In mid-career, you could afford to be aggressive with your portfolio. When you are drawing down those assets after you retire and have less time to recover from market drops, a more conservative approach may make sense.

Still, being too conservative heightens the risks of outliving your money and failing to keep pace with cost-of-living increases. Consider that even a modest annual inflation rate of 2.5% would erode the spending power of a dollar by 46% over a 25-year period, according to calculations by the CIO. Ask your advisor whether your current fixed income and dividend stock investments are sufficient to supply you with the income you will need, given the potential for inflation and market volatility. Will your current asset allocation provide enough potential growth to cover another 20 years or more? Finding the right balance for your personal situation is key.

2. Prioritize your immediate cash needs.

If your noninvestment income (Social Security, a pension, income from a part-time job) covers all or most of your essential expenses — healthcare, housing and so on — you can take on more investing risk. If not, you may want to have more of your investments in lower-risk assets, such as U.S. Treasuries, high-grade corporate bonds or annuities.

“You want a high level of certainty around the investments that are supporting your essential lifestyle,” Suri says. “Beyond that, you need to pursue more growth.” Keep in mind that you may end up spending more than you anticipated in retirement. Some 45% of retirees report spending more than they had expected, according to the 2025 Retirement Confidence Survey from the Employee Benefits Research Institute and Greenwald Research.1 3. Do not abandon stocks.

While stocks are susceptible to shortterm price swings, they also give you the best chance of staying ahead of inflation and helping your money last. While you may have previously felt comfortable with an aggressive equity allocation, you and your advisor could now find that a more balanced allocation, say 50% to stocks and 50% to bonds, offers the greatest likelihood of providing you with the growth you need, according to the CIO. An all-cash portfolio leaves you at greater risk of running out of money.

4. Prepare for volatility, especially early in your retirement.

Volatility can be especially damaging early in retirement. When you are investing for retirement, you are likely contributing regularly to your retirement plan. Once you retire, however, you are not only withdrawing funds, but you are also no longer making fresh contributions.

You need to guard against what is called sequence of returns risk. It is what happens when a steep market drop in the first few years of retirement forces you to draw down stocks at depressed prices. Withdrawing more than you had intended could have an outsized impact on your remaining wealth. Having cash and short-term bonds on hand can help you navigate down markets, says Nevenka Vrdoljak, a managing director in the CIO. “Adding more guaranteed income could also help minimize sequence of returns risk,” she adds.

5. Stick to your plan — and review it regularly.

Creating a solid retirement investment strategy is one thing. Sticking to it is another, and our emotions can sometimes cause us to act too hastily when markets get volatile, particularly in retirement. In fact, because investors tend to buy and sell at inappropriate times, their actual returns often lag the overall market.

An advisor can help you avoid emotional mistakes, and reviewing your plan regularly with your advisor can also help you feel more in control. “One of the greatest threats to a secure retirement is the failure to have a plan,” Vrdoljak says. Developing a retirement investing plan — and sticking to it — may be the most important rule there is.
