Asking the Right Question If asked, “What do you want out of life?” most people would say health, happiness, a great job, family, friends, a lovely house in a vibrant community, and success.

These answers are expected.

A more interesting, thought-provoking question is, “For what are you willing to struggle?”

Of course, everyone wants a fantastic job and financial independence.

Still, not everyone is willing to endure 60-hour workweeks, weekend obligations at the office, long commutes, piles of paperwork, or working with people who are mediocre at best. Individuals want financial security and the rewards that come with hard work, preparation, education, training, sacrifice, and delayed gratification required to accumulate wealth.

The next level of wealth accumulation could be the desire to start a business. One does not become a successful entrepreneur without tremendous risk, sacrifice, and uncertainty, along with insane hours and repeated failures, with no guarantee of success.

Most want an awesome relationship, but not everyone is willing to endure the tough conversations, awkward silences, hurt feelings, swallowing of pride, give-and-take, forgiveness and grace, and emotional dramas that vibrant and healthy relationships require.

Most want to be fit, strong, and healthy, but no one becomes fit, strong, and healthy without the discipline to hit the gym, tolerate sweat and soreness, and do early-morning workouts. Not many are willing to intentionally calibrate their food intake and deny themselves the pleasures of sugar-laden, high-calorie foods.

Some might want to be a famous musician or sports superstar. This does not happen without years of lessons, coaching, and practice. Thinking of screaming fans is great, but all this is a fantasy if one is unwilling to put up with the drudgery of practicing, the logistics of finding a gig and rehearsals, hauling speakers and equipment, not getting paid, and… and… and.

At the core of our common humanity, our needs are more alike than different. Positive experiences are easy to handle. Our negative experiences and obstacles require struggle, grit, resolve, and tenacity.

What we experience in life is not determined by the good we desire but by what we are willing to sustain and work toward, to get through difficulties and intense feelings, and to overcome the negative.

This is the process required to achieve the reward we desperately want.

What determines success isn’t “What do you want to enjoy?” but rather, “What pain or struggle are you willing to endure?”

Many are in love with the results of a great job, financial security, a robust relationship, fitness and health, and being a musical rockstar or superstar, but they are not dedicated to the process of what it takes to get there.

My family and I agreed to be adventure seekers, hard workers, contributing citizens, and creative problem-solvers.

We are going to make the best of whatever unfolds. That is

the attitude of resilience, grit, and the American way. Unfortunately, our capitalist system of free enterprise, self-governance, and freedom is at risk from those who look sideways and refuse to do whatever it takes to plan, work, and get ahead. They want to punish success and reward those who did not take risks, invest their own capital, and work 12-15hour days with no guarantees.

The question remains, “For what are you willing to struggle?” Answering this question reveals the cry of our hearts.

Once we know what we want and go after it with reckless abandon, knowing that this will require blood, sweat, and tears, there will be a sweet reward for a struggle worth pursuing. joneen@narme.org

The Real Winner Was America “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” is one of the world’s most recognizable songs, and after Sunday’s World Cup final, Argentina has nothing to be ashamed of.

Spain was simply the better team. From the opening whistle, the Spanish controlled possession, created scoring opportunities, and played the kind of disciplined, beautiful soccer that wins championships. Argentina fought hard until the final whistle, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was nothing short of heroic, turning away one dangerous scoring chance after another. Without his remarkable performance, the final score might have been much different.

Congratulations to Spain.

They earned the championship.

But as I watched the match, it struck me that the real winner wasn’t Spain or Argentina.

The real winner was the United States of America.

For several unforgettable weeks, America welcomed the world to our shores. Millions of fans filled our stadiums, vis-

minder that the world’s game has found a home in our own backyard.

Professional women’s soccer is now part of the fabric of our community, giving young athletes new role models and local fans a team to rally behind. Congratulations to the City of Centennial and to the many soccer visionaries whose hard work brought this exciting new chapter to the Denver metropolitan area.

As the final whistle blew and Spain celebrated its championship, I couldn’t help but feel proud of our own nation as well.

Perhaps, just for a little while, we can set politics aside and remember what we witnessed over these past weeks: talented young athletes competing with honor, millions of fans celebrating together in peace, and America opening its arms to the world.

That is something every American can be proud of.

Student Caddies Discover What’s Next Beyond the Golf Course For more than 90 high school students, their summer experience at Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain’s (JA) Free Enterprise Center wasn’t just a field trip. It was a chance to see their future take shape.

Caddies from the Colorado Golf Association’s (CGA) Solich Caddie & Leadership Academy spent their day participating in JA learning experiences, all designed to connect the skills they have developed on the golf course with real-world career exploration. This is the second year of the partnership between JA and the CGA, as both organizations look to expand opportunities for young people across Colorado.

Students traveled from across the state, including Fort Collins Country Club, The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, and multiple Metro Denver courses.

Run by the CGA, the Solich Caddie and Leadership Academy was founded in 2012 at CommonGround Golf Course

in Aurora to provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and enhance their character through a foundation built around caddying.

“The partnership between the Colorado Golf Association, our youth caddie program, and Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain provides an incredible opportunity for caddies to step beyond

the golf course, connect with local professionals, and see how the skills they’re developing today can help shape their future educational and career goals,” said Tim Wimsatt, Managing Director of Youth Caddie Programs at the CGA. “We often say that caddying is the best first job ever, and this partnership explains why. Every loop teaches young people communication,

responsibility, professionalism, and problem-solving, and Junior Achievement reinforces those same life skills through real-world experiences that prepare students for whatever comes next.”

Throughout the day, students explored career pathways, practiced networking, and worked in teams to solve real-world challenges, helping them build the skills and confidence needed to navigate their futures. This included an experience in the Daniels Fund JA Dream Accelerator, a national experiential program founded in Colorado that is designed to inspire students to develop a plan to pursue a meaningful career and future. Some students even returned after participating in the inaugural event last year.

“This is my second time coming on this field trip, and each time I come to JA, I learn something new,” said Michelle Shaw, a caddie at CommonGround Golf Course.

“This experience challenged me to think about what I really want to do in the future. It is a great opportunity to ask questions and have important

conversations.”

The day’s participants also had the opportunity to hear from professionals and entrepreneurs through a panel version of JA Career Speaker Series, build their personal brand and networking skills with JA Personal Success, and practice working in groups during a special Teambuilding Challenge.

“The panel was fascinating; as someone really interested in healthcare, the highlight of my day was having the chance to speak to a nurse,” reflected Karl Stavig, who caddies at Meridian Golf Club. “It was a great opportunity to listen to these successful people as they gave us advice. I really learned a lot from them.”

“I started with the elevator pitch (JA Personal Success), and through that, I saw how the successful business owners and entrepreneurs we talked to created their own brand,” said Eliana Tilanum, who also caddies at Meridian.

What students gained during the day will go far beyond their caddie loops.

Through these hands-on, real-world learning experiences, they built confidence and gained the skills and competencies needed to pursue opportunity-filled futures, both on and off the course.

“Together, we’re creating opportunities for young people to build a foundation for success in college, their careers, and the communities they will one day lead, and we’re thrilled to share that responsibility with Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain to make it possible,” said Tim.

Summer cruise to the Inside Passage of Alaska

n July 12, all 11 members of the immediate Miklin family, along with spouses and a toddler, boarded the Star Princess for a cruise through the Inside Passage of Alaska.

From Seattle, we visited Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau, then stopped in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia.

The Star Princess set sail for the first time in October 2025 and features extensive glass panels for panoramic ocean views from most public areas, other than the two casinos, and constant entertainment in the three-deck-high atrium called the Piazza, creating a lively atmosphere.

The ship also features beautiful specialty restaurants with outstanding food. They cost extra but

There are bald eagles everywhere. We saw a male perched atop a large nest.

Those are typically up to six feet wide and four feet deep. Eagles mate for life and reuse their nests every year, adding new layers of sticks and vegetation each

breeding season.

Skagway is famous for being the site of the gold rush at the end of the 19th century. Once home to 20,000 people, today there are just over 1,000 permanent residents. The population swells to 2,500 during the summer tourist season. One of the largest

draws is a scenic railroad ride where you will see waterfalls, glaciers, and the beautiful, rugged terrain of Alaska.

The City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska, the state capital, is 3,255 square miles, though only 14 of those are urbanized.

Juneau is in a rainforest

and home to the famous Mendenhall Glacier, located only 13 miles from downtown. Juneau is not connected by roads to the rest of the state, reachable only by sea or air. It is well known as a place for humpback whale watching.

The special memories of this trip will last a lifetime.

Parking Crunch Hits Cherry Creek High School as Construction Limits Student Spaces

While some CCHS families appear surprised by the parking limitations, district officials say they have long anticipated reduced parking during construction and have been working for months to lessen the impact.

The broader construction timeline is also affected by plans to remove the existing tennis courts and rebuild them in Belleview Park, just south of Belleview Elementary School.

When demolition began on the old courts next to the student parking lot, crews discovered older tennis courts beneath them that contained asbestos. CCSD is now scheduling the necessary work so the material can be removed, following all applicable safety protocols.

On July 21, Intermountain Health announced that three of its hospitals, Lutheran Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Platte Valley Hospital, along with affiliated clinics, will be

Inaugural Cat Pajama Jam Raises Thousands for Colorado’s Most Vulnerable Cats A morning of pajamas, French toast, mimosas, and purpose helped change lives—one cat at a time.

What happens when compassionate animal lovers show up in their favorite pajamas for brunch? At The Feline Fix, it means hope for thousands of Colorado cats.

The inaugural Cat Pajama Jam was everything The Feline Fix dreamed it would be—and more.

Supporters of all ages gathered for a one-of-a-kind morning filled with delicious brunch favorites, mimosas, laughter, exciting auctions, more than twenty adorable kittens, and a shared commitment to ending the suffering caused by cat overpopulation.

More than just a fun event, Cat Pajama Jam raised critical funds that will directly support The Feline Fix’s mission to provide affordable, high-volume spay and neuter services throughout Colorado while helping rescue as many homeless kittens as possible. The Feline Fix’s foster and adoption pro-

gram saves hundreds of kittens every year, placing them in loving forever homes—never to return to life on the streets. Together, supporters helped raise the funds needed to prevent unwanted litters, reduce overcrowding in shelters, and give countless cats the opportunity to live healthier, safer lives.

One of the greatest highlights of the morning was seeing the community come together. Families, longtime supporters, first-time guests, volunteers, sponsors, and fellow animal advocates all embraced the playful spirit of the event—proving that making a difference can also be a lot of fun.

“We created Cat Pajama Jam to offer a relaxing Sunday morning where people could celebrate their love of cats while raising the funds needed to help us spay and neuter as many vulnerable cats as possible,” said Stacey Baum, Director of Development & Marketing for The Feline Fix. “Seeing so many people come together in support of our mission was

incredibly rewarding, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”

While the pajamas have been packed away, the work continues. Every spay and neuter surgery funded through events like Cat Pajama Jam helps create a future with fewer homeless cats, fewer unwanted litters, and less suffering.

Baseball’s ABS system good but can be better In 1950s Northern Kentucky, we played Knothole Baseball— Class C, B or A, depending on each player’s age—instead of Little League.

We had shirts and hats instead of full uniforms and turned in our shirts at the end of the season so they could be re-issued the next spring.

(Some boys pinned pieces of paper with their names to their shirts in hopes they’d get the same ones the next year.)

And we didn’t always have a home plate umpire. I played a few games in which the man judging balls and strikes was perched on a step ladder behind the pitcher for lack of the usual protective equipment.

It was as far from today’s Automated Ball-Strike System, Major League Baseball’s ABS, as you could get.

On many occasions this summer I’ve recalled that guy calling pitches like a house painter, each time wondering what today’s players—at any level—would say if they had to accept such an inexact, imperfect way of concluding from afar if a given pitch was a ball or a strike.

This is MLB’s first season allowing pitchers, catchers and batters—no other players and no manager or coach—to be the equivalent of the man on the step ladder, on occasions of their choosing.

Each team starts every Major League game with two challenges, which the specified players can use at any point in a plate appearance.

They must indicate their challenge immediately after the pitch by tapping their batting helmet.

Whenever a ball- or strikecall is challenged, that team retains its challenge (to be used again at some later moment in the game) if the umpire is overruled by video replay. But the questioning team loses further use of that challenge when the strikezone cameras uphold the ump.

By the All-Star Break last week, 6,040 pitches had been disputed, and “the man on the ladder” prevailed 53% of the time. That meant the men behind the mask were right slightly less than half the time on close calls that were questioned.

The Cincinnati Reds (64.4%) and Arizona Diamondbacks (62.2%) were the most successful teams at challenging the home plate umpire through the end of play on the Sunday before the All-Star Game.

Reds batterymates were the best in baseball, with 73.1% of their replays overturned (led by catcher Tyler Stephenson’s 72.9% success rate on 85 challenges), and their

batters were second among all 30 teams at 55.9%.

The Rockies were 13th overall at 54.7%.

Their hitters were 22nd, at 43.% correct challenges, and Colorado catchers and pitchers ranked sixth with 63.7% of their challenges upheld.

If you’re under the impression that Hunter Goodman might make a good ball-strike ump, the stats justify that feeling. Through 98 games, he ranked fourth in baseball with 53 successful challenges in 79 taps of his helmet—67.1%.

According to ESPN’s compilation, 91 umpires had calls questioned leading up to the All-Star Break.

Thirty-three of them were found to be correct more than half the time they were challenged, led by newcomers Louie Kroupa (33.3%) and Derek Thomas (34.6%).

The most often challenged were 28-year veteran Hunter Wendelstadt and Lance Barrett (hired by MLB is 2012), each 99 times, and Ryan Additon, a former minor league pitcher who made his MLB umpiring debut in 2017, 98 times. Wendelstadt and Barrett both were overturned 58.6% of the time; Additon 48% (25th best).

I’ve been asked what I think of the ABS and its addition to Major League baseball.

Baseball purist that I am, I nonetheless am all for getting it right, whether that’s a tag play, fair or foul, or balls and strikes. If that involves the use of modern technology, so be it.

I do think, though, that there’s room for refinement.

First, teams should develop a strategy for utilizing their challenges. It makes no sense to me to challenge a ball or strike call in the first or second inning of a scoreless game with no runners on base. To me, those are ego challenges. They do virtually nothing to help a team win.

Saving challenges for when they can impact the outcome makes a lot more sense. There’s no better example than Braxton Fulford in a recent Rockies game. He used the same challenge three times to turn pitches called balls into strikes, at the end of a game Colorado held on to win.

f you are not yet familiar with Oliver’s Italian In Greenwood Village at 4950 S. Yosemite, then I’m very happy to have the opportunity to introduce it to you. Its one of those spots that easily (for good reasons) fulfills the needs of a delicious brunch, lunch, or dinner with family, friends, or co-workers when you are trying to decide where to go. Shucking Good Hospitality is a Denver based restaurant and hospitality group led by chef and restaurateur Sean Huggard, and Oliver’s is one of their celebrated concepts. SGH knows how to create and manage an awesome team, two of who I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Tanner one of the assistant GM’s and PR executive Valerie Gaddis-Arellano. I will tell you they have earned a reputation for freshness, consistency, quality, a perfect neighborhood atmosphere, and they are known for their operational excellence. You might ask what else is there? I’ll tell you. Its their thoughtfully executed menus.

This is the fun part! Some of my favorite appetizers are their mediterranean mussels, meatballs, burrata, or whipped ricotta and truffle honey with artisian bread. All their salads are fresh and satisfying including the pear and shaved brussel sprouts prepared with pistachios, parsley, turkish fig, arugula, parmigiano reggiano, and citrus vinaigrette. They also make roman style pizzas here!

Try the spicy soppressata, the spinaci, or the fig and pig. A good problem to have is deciding what to order from their pasta, and main dishes. My husband, son and I recently came in to experience one night of their fun coastal Italian summer series which goes through September 9th. Ours focused on the Amalfi Coast drawing inspiration from citrus groves, seaside villages, and simple coastal cooking. We chose from chilled shrimp with Calabrian cocktail sauce, tuna tartare with green oilve tapenade and lemon aioli, plus 99 cent oysters in addition to Falanghina white wine and a crisp citrus forward expertly crafted limoncello martini, just to get started, YUM! A collective favorite is their spicy vodka pasta with Carmine’s sausage.

Something we order almost every visit. Also the wild boar ragu, carbonara, and lasagna rotolo are all savory and perfectly balanced. You must try the braised short rib with parmesan polenta, wilted greens, and barolo reduction! I tell people my middle name is short rib, and this dish gets very high ratings from me. The chicken parm, veal chop, and frutti di mare risotto are each remarkable on their own.

My husband and I recently returned for “neighborhood night,” held every Sunday. Oliver’s makes this easy to enjoy a relaxed, delicious evening featuring a 3-course meal for just under $30.

Since the Civil Wage Theft Ordinance was implemented in the City and County of Denver, Denver Labor, a division of the Denver Auditor’s Office, is responsible for protecting all workers in Denver, including individuals hired through digital platforms for shortterm work assignments that may last only a few hours, days, or weeks.

Many workers are often classified an independent contractors, but this classification may be incorrect and illegal.

Employee misclassification is a persistent problem in many of our economy’s growth industries: home care, janitorial, trucking, delivery, construction, personal services, hospitality and restaurants. More recently,

this has also included the rapidly growing app-dispatched jobs.

Misclassifying employees as independent contractors adversely affects everyone in Denver. It impacts all of us because it enables certain employers to evade taxes that fund programs such as unemployment insurance, Social Security and Medicare. Additionally, it harms high-road employers who pay their employees and their taxes but cannot compete against those who cut corners.

The following are ways employers steal wages by misclassifying employees as independent contractors: • They often suffer minimum wage and overtime violations; • They can’t take paid rest breaks; • They don’t receive paid sick leave; • If they get injured on the

job, they can’t take advantage of workers’ compensation; • If they lose their jobs, they are not protected by unemployment insurance; and • If they have a child, get sick, or have to take care of a loved one, they can’t use paid family leave.
