America: Optimism or Cynicism As we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, I am concerned about what is happening in our country. There is a division not only over politics but also over patriotism. Some cry when they hear the national anthem, pay tribute to our flag, take off their hats, bow their heads, and place their hands over their hearts. Others take a knee, apologize for the country, and declare to the world that we are unworthy of being the greatest nation on earth. A growing chorus declares that America is not great, was never great, and is somehow an embarrassment to the world. This narrative focuses solely on failures, mistakes, and shortcomings, ignoring the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, innovation, and generosity that have defined the American experience for centuries.

Every nation has flaws and challenges. Every society bears wounds from the past and struggles in the present.

Yet, there is a profound difference between recognizing imperfection and surrendering to cynicism. A nation of more than 300 million people will never be perfect. But America’s greatness has never been found in perfection. Its greatness lies in the willingness to strive toward a more perfect union.

America is a nation built by people who believed in hope and hard work, who were optimistic and saw the glass as half full. These pioneers were builders, entrepreneurs, and creative problem solvers, not whiners, protesters, destroyers, or cynics.

If we look beyond the headlines, we will find a remarkable story of generosity.

Americans donate billions of dollars each year to help neighbors, communities, and people around the world.

When disasters strike, Americans run toward those in need. Volunteers show up.

Churches and charities serve meals. First responders risk their lives. Strangers help strangers. Just this morning, my church is rallying support for the earthquake victims in Venezuela. This is the America that often goes unnoticed.

Additionally, the world has benefited from American innovation, from medical breakthroughs to technology that connects humanity. American generosity has helped feed the hungry, fight disease, provide disaster relief, and support freedom worldwide. These contributions do not erase America’s mistakes, but they reveal a nation that is constantly wrestling with how to

live up to its highest ideals.

The difference between optimism and pessimism is not whether someone sees problems. The difference is whether someone believes problems can be solved and solves them.

A glass-half-empty mindset says, “Look at everything that is wrong. There is no hope.”

A glass-half-full mindset says, “Look at what we have, and imagine what we can still become.”

Those who constantly whip up anger and discontent are robbing future generations of the very spirit that built it: gratitude, responsibility, service, and hope. A healthy love for America does not require

pretending everything is perfect. It requires appreciating what is good, protecting what is valuable, and working to improve what is broken.

The choice is simple: Will we become a nation defined by resentment, despair, greed, envy, and confiscation from the haves to the have-nots, or will we become a nation renewed by gratitude, possibility, and innovation? The future belongs to those who see opportunity rather than obstacles. The future belongs to those who choose hope and optimism. America’s greatest days have never been found in looking backward with bitterness. They have always been found looking forward with courage and hope.

The story of Freemasonry in Colorado can still be found throughout the mountain communities. Historic lodges remain active in Central City, Georgetown and Nederland.

Their buildings stand as reminders of a period when miners, merchants, lawyers and civic leaders gathered to support one another and strengthen their communities.

Some local stories tell of lodge meetings where miners discussed discoveries and prospects behind guarded doors.

Whether every tale has grown larger with time is impossible to know. What remains certain is that trust, fellowship and mutual support were valuable commodities in Colorado’s early mining camps.

The square and compass became symbols not only of fraternity but also of community building.

As America marks its 250th birthday and Colorado celebrates 150 years of statehood, we often focus on famous battles, political leaders and historic dates. Those events deserve recognition.

Yet history was also shaped by organizations that brought people together, encouraged public service and helped create strong communities.

Some of those men marched with George Washington during the birth of a nation. Others climbed into Gregory Gulch seeking gold and opportunity.

Many wore the square and compass of Freemasonry.

Their legacy remains visible today on Main Street in Central City, where the story of America and the story of Colorado continue to meet.

Arapahoe County Coroner Kelly Lear, M.D., is retiring after a long and distinguished career

There is one elected office in Arapahoe County that many residents may not think about often — and in many ways, that is a good thing.

But when the Coroner’s Office is needed, its role is essential.

The work requires medical expertise, scientific independence and deep humanity. It means bringing facts to the most difficult circumstances, supporting families and public safety partners, and speaking for those who can no longer speak for themselves.

For more than two decades, Dr. Kelly Lear, who is retiring from the County on July 1, has carried out that responsibility for Arapahoe County with professionalism, compassion and extraordinary steadiness.

A Career Built on Expertise and Integrity

Dr. Lear earned her undergraduate degree in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Cornell College before receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. She completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency and Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University of Colorado Hospital, followed by a Forensic

Pathology Fellowship at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, building a foundation of clinical depth that would define her public service career.

She joined the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office in 2004 as a forensic pathologist and Deputy Coroner, was elected Coroner in 2014, and has led the office ever since.

The office is accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners. Board-certified in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology, Dr. Lear has brought exceptional scientific rigor and professional integrity to one of the County’s most sensitive public service roles.

Over the course of her career, she has performed thousands of medicolegal examinations, provided expert testimony in criminal proceedings, published peer-reviewed work in forensic and medical journals, and shared her expertise with colleagues locally and nationally.

Steady Through the Most Difficult Moments

Dr. Lear’s work has placed her at the center of some of Arapahoe County’s most complex and closely watched death investigations. In those moments, when public attention can be intense and emotions are high, she has remained focused on the responsibility

at the heart of the Coroner’s Office: to determine the facts, protect the integrity of the investigation and treat every death with dignity, seriousness and care.

She has never allowed the noise around a case to overshadow the person at the center of it. Her work has brought clarity to families, supported the pursuit of justice and helped ensure that those who can no longer speak for themselves still have a voice.

Even years later, certain cases remain with her. “There are cases that speak to me as a person,” Dr. Lear reflected.

“The first autopsy I did when I got back from maternity leave was an infant the same age as my infant daughter. That obviously stuck out.” It is that kind of human connection — carrying the weight of each case even as the work demands steady clinical judgment — that has defined her approach.

Dr. Lear’s leadership has also guided Arapahoe County through some of the most difficult public health challenges of recent years, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the rise in fentanyl-related deaths and other preventable tragedies. At a time when coroner and medical examiner offices across the country faced increasing demands, she remained a steady, trusted voice for facts, science and accountability.

A Special Commitment to Children and Prevention

Dr. Lear’s legacy is not only measured in cases, reports or courtroom testimony. It is also reflected in her commitment to prevention.

With a special interest in pediatric deaths, she has served for nearly two decades on Colorado’s State Child

Fatality Prevention Review Team and has been a member of the Arapahoe County Child Fatality Review Team since its formation. She also serves on the Arapahoe County Not One More Child Community Coalition. That work is quiet, confidential and emotionally difficult, but deeply important.

It reflects the heart of her public service: learning from tragedy, protecting children and helping communities prevent future loss.

Her prevention work extends further, contributing to the Governor’s Expert Emergency Epidemic Response Committee, the Tri-County Overdose Prevention Partnership and broader community education efforts related to prescription drug abuse and suicide prevention.

That commitment does not end with her tenure. Dr. Lear will continue serving on the Colorado State Child Fatality Prevention Review Team and on national and international case review committees: work she describes as a significant area for ongoing research and education. “Children are not just small adults,” she noted, reflecting on the complexity of pediatric death investigations.

“There’s a lot of room for education — in the medical community, in the coroner and law enforcement arenas, and with the general public.”

A National Leader in Her Field

Alongside her local work, Dr. Lear has built a distinguished national profile. She has served on the American Board of Pathology Test De-

velopment and Advisory Committee, the Academic Forensic Pathology Journal Editorial Board, the Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood Scientific Advisory Board and SUDC Registry and Research Collaborative, the College of American Pathologists Forensic Pathology Resource Committee, and numerous committees with the National Association of Medical Examiners.

She is a Fellow of both the National Association of Medical Examiners and the College of American Pathologists, and a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. She has received the National Association of Medical Examiners Outstanding Service Award and the University of Colorado Department of Pathology Summit Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Her academic appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Associate Clinical Professor at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine reflect a sustained commitment to training the next generation of forensic pathologists.

Thank You, Dr. Lear For the residents of Arapahoe County, Dr. Lear has been more than a medical expert.

She has been a public servant who approached difficult work with professionalism, humanity and care — representing this community with expertise and distinction for more than 20 years.

As she looks ahead to retirement and more time with her wife and children, Arapahoe County offers its sincere gratitude for her years of service, her steady leadership and her lasting contributions to our community.

As she reflects on more than two decades of service, Dr. Lear’s thoughts return not to the cases or the credentials, but to the people she worked alongside. “The office has fostered good people; people who care about the work they do and care about the families we serve,” she said. “That’s why I wanted to be there in the first place, and what I hope continues after I’m gone.”

PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE JUNE 30 PRIMARY ELECTION Phil Weiser is Democratic candidate for Colorado governor—Kiros appears to upset DeGette in Denver Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser bested U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in the race for the Democratic nomination for Colorado governor much more easily than many predicted. The race was called officially with Weiser ten points ahead. Bennet, who gave a gracious concession speech, is in the fourth year of his third six-year term in the Senate. He will simply go back to his day job.

Republican State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer on November 3. As we went to press Tuesday night, Kirkmeyer was up 41% to 39% over missionary Victor Marx, with State Rep. Scott Bottoms in third place. The race was not final but appeared to be going Kirkmeyer’s way.

The biggest shock of the election happened in the City and County of Denver, a/k/a Colorado Congressional District One, where newcomer Melat Kiros, 29, a lawyer and Democratic Socialist from Ethiopia, was expected to beat 15-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette. Although the results were not considered final, Kiros was ahead of DeGette by five points with 73% of ballots counted.

Kiros has called for abolishing ICE, an arms embargo on Israel, and Medicare for all. The Republican candidate in the general election to represent Denver in Congress will be Christy Peterson.

In the race for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Attorney General, Secretary of State Jena Griswold beat Hetal Doshi, David Seligman, and Michael Dougherty handily, receiving more than double the vote total of each of the other three candidates. She will face Republican Michael J. Allen on November 3.

Incumbent U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper successfully faced down a stronger-than-expected

challenge from State Sen. Julie Gonzales in his bid for a second six-year term.

Hickenlooper’s Republican opponent will be State Sen. Mark Baisley in the general election.

Jefferson County Clerk Amanda Gonzalez trounced State Sen. Jessie Danielson in the race for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State. Gonzalez will be up against Republican James Wiley in the general election.

In Congressional District eight, the state’s newest and most evenly divided district, politically, freshman State Rep. Manny Rutinel beat veteran State Rep. Shannon Bird in the bid for the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent first-term

U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans in November.

In Congressional District three, first-term incumbent Republican U. S. Rep. Jeff Hurd beat back a primary challenge from former State Rep. Ron Hanks. In the Democratic primary, Dwayne Romero beat Alex Keloff for the right to challenge Hurd in the general election for the third congressional district..

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert had no challenger in the Republican primary for Congressional District Four. She will face retired U.S. Navy Admiral Democrat Eileen Laubacher in the fall. Laubacher was also unopposed in her primary.

In Congressional District five, first-term incumbent Jeff Crank will face Democrat Jessica Killin in November. Killin beat Joe Reagan in the Democratic primary by nearly two to one.

Colorado Supreme Court unanimously blocks three Democraticbacked redistricting measures on technical grounds On June 29, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that three pending ballot initiatives, #240, #241, and #242, designed to allow voters to change the boundaries of our state’s eight congressional districts to give Democrats a distinct advantage in the November 2028 and November 2030 general elections, were unconstitutional.

Backers of the initiative’s goal was to ask the state’s voters to bypass the Colorado

Independent Redistricting Commission for the next two elections, in response to prior actions taken by other states, starting with the Texas state legislature, controlled

by Republicans, successfully redrawing their state’s maps ahead of the upcoming general election into highly gerrymandered districts to elect Republican Members of Congress in numbers that exceed the levels of Republican voters in the state. California went

through a successful process with similar intentions, to elect more Democrats to Congress in November, but they did it through a vote of the people, not the state legislature.

In our state, voters approved the use of an Independent Redistricting Commission via a constitutional amendment in 2018 and it has been in use since, beginning with the 2022 general election.

Colorado has similar numbers of registered Republicans and

Democrats, at around 25% each, with half the electorate being unaffiliated with either party. Our congressional representation is evenly split between the two major parties, consistent with voter registration.

The Colorado Supreme Court did not address the merits of what proponents of the ballot issues were trying to do.

It found, unanimously, that the three ballot initiatives violated the rule that each must be on

a single subject only, which the court noted was a technical decision.

Coloradans for a Level Playing Field, a Democratic-aligned group supporting the initiatives, expressed disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decisions. Michael Fields, president of Advance Colorado, a right leaning advocacy group that has sponsored numerous ballot initiatives, applauded the court’s decision.

Legislature blocks road-funding initiative that would shift money from other government services

Many Coloradans agree that roads across the state need more—and better—maintenance. Proponents of Ballot Initiative # 175: State Revenue Supporting Road Transportation, which would increase state spending on roads, had little difficulty gathering the 124,238 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot.

They submitted 189,355 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office, which determined on June 23 that 143,112 were valid, clearing the measure for a statewide vote on November 2.

If at least 55% of those who vote on the measure approve it, the initiative would amend the state constitution to require that any state revenue collected by the state or any local

government to support road transportation be spent on road transportation only.

The measure would take effect two months later, January 1, 2027, and remain in place through June 30, 2030.

The nonpartisan Legislative Council Staff (LC) of the General Assembly reported, on December 22, 2025, that Initiative 175 would increase state road transportation spending by more than $1 billion during the remaining six months of FY 2026-27 (January through June 2027) and by more than $2 billion in FY 2027-28.

In response to the initiative’s substantial redirection of state revenue outside the normal budget process that includes the 100-member elected

legislature and the governor, lawmakers passed HB26-1430 Transportation Funding Adjustments, late in the 2026 session, to block the impact of Initiative # 175. Gov. Polis signed HB26-1430 into law on June 4.

It will only take effect if voters approve Initiative #175.

If it goes into effect, HB261430 would dramatically reduce the taxes and fees that fund roads “such that total reductions in the Highway Users Tax Fund revenue offset the increases in revenue dedicated to road transportation as a result of Initiative 175,” per LC. Because HB26-1430 would lower taxes and fees, overall state revenue would decline.

million in FY 2026-27 and $499.4 million in FY 2027-28, explaining that since TABOR refunds are paid from the General Fund, reduced cash fund revenue would leave more General Fund money available for the legislature to spend or save in those years and in future years when the state exceeds its revenue limit.

HB26-1430 would effectively shift road funding from the Highway Users Tax Fund to a new enterprise fund, the Support Road Transportation Fund. Enterprises are not subject to TABOR. The Colorado Municipal League, which represents cities across the state, issued a May 5 statement opposing both Initiative 175 and HB26-1430.

Common Sense Institute described the standoff between Initiative proponents and the elected legislature this way: “HB26-1430 would dramatically blunt Initiative 175’s practical effect…leaving little money to be redirected to road construction and repair during the bill’s three-and-a-half-year window.”

According to State Rep. Chad Clifford (D-Greenwood Village), “Without HB261430’s offsetting tax and fee reductions, Initiative 175 would function as a large, ongoing forced transfer (of millions of dollars) from education, healthcare, and other services directly to roads. The Continued on page 7

impacts are devastating and an existential threat to core government services, precisely because K-12 and Medicaid alone represent a huge share of the General Fund. Voters aren’t being presented even a nudge of a full picture of the impacts proposed in 175, just “fix roads, no new taxes” without the understanding the downstream impacts to the state budget is the most dangerous way to try to direct state funding.”

He explains that Initiative 175 does not create any new revenue, thus “If passed without HB26-1430…it would constitutionally mandate…a direct reduction in flexible General Fund resources that currently support K-12 education, Medicaid, higher education, human services, and other core functions, to roads.”

Speaker Pro Tem of the Colorado House, Andrew Boesenecker (D-Ft. Collins), a sponsor of HB26-1430, was quoted as saying, “Nobody would argue that we need to

better fund roads in our state…

If you’re going to propose that the voters are being asked to do this for the price of nothing, of course, the voters are going to say yes. But if you ask, ‘What if it may close the hospital?’

That’s a very big question.”

HB26-1430 also provides that if initiative supporters had withdrawn the measure from the November 2 ballot

by June 15, the law would have created a transportation funding working group to evaluate and recommend options to the General Assem-

bly, Transportation Commission, and governor for funding state and local surface transportation maintenance, repair, capacity, and safety, according to leg.colorado. gov/bills/hb26-1430. The group would have included a neutral facilitator and submitted its report by November 13, 2026, ahead of the 2027 legislative session.

Although the Secretary of State’s office did not certify Initiative 175 for the ballot until June 23, Colorado Politics reported that supporters

declined to withdraw the measure before the June 15 deadline “but said they were willing to continue discussions to find a mutual solution.”

Nothing is stopping the two sides from continuing negotiations that could lead to increased funding for road projects, without removing highly needed resources from other state departments. If the two sides reach an agreement, backers of Initiative # 175 have until September 4 to withdraw the measure from the November 2 ballot.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the number of cars stolen in Colorado from January 2026 to May 2026 was 4,797. During the same five-month period in 2025, that total was 7,480, reflecting a single-year decrease of 36%. ________________________

ver the weekend, Colorado U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper drew attention to the plight of 78-year-old Pastor Edward Nalwamba, a citizen of Uganda presently being held in ICE detention in Aurora and subject to imminent deportation. Nalwamba has lived in the U.S. for more than 25 years. He retired two years ago after working as a priest for about 15 years at the Resurrection Anglican Fellowship at 9250 E. Belleview in Greenwood Village, according to Philip Eberhart, founding pastor at

the church. Nalwamba first came to the U.S. in 2002 for a religious conference. He stayed after his visa expired because colleagues in Uganda told him government agents were looking for him and his life would be in danger if he returned, after having criticized the Ugandan government for human rights abuses. Nalwamba is currently in reportedly poor health, having contracted pneumonia and becoming malnourished while in ICE custody. ________________________

n June 27, just after 6 am, Arapahoe County deputies responded to a call from a resident in the 4700 block of E. Caley Place in Centennial who had observed a man acting suspiciously in a neighboring back yard.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man carrying a large metal pole. The man advanced toward the deputies and struck one with the pole. Deputies attempted to stop the man with a Taser

but were unsuccessful. Two deputies then discharged their firearms. The man they shot was pronounced deceased at the scene. ________________________

s a result of the loss of a significant number of student parking spaces during the ongoing redevelopment of the Cherry Creek campus, the Cherry Creek School District and the City of Greenwood Village are working together to create an additional parking lot at the north end of Village Greens Park for students to use during the upcoming school year. Construction of the lot will take place this summer. The District and the City are reminding parents that students are not permitted to park in the residential neighborhoods near Cherry Creek High School.

he United States Food and Drug Administration has begun work on a new $228 million building at the

Denver Federal Center in Lakewood. It will be a research lab, focused on food borne illness outbreaks, as well as standard examination of food, drugs, and cosmetics to confirm they meet applicable federal safety standards. According to the FDA, the new lab will have 16,500 square feet of microbiology space and 14,000 square feet of chemistry space. The new building is expected to be completed in 2029. ________________________

Freedom Festival: A Celebration of Faith, Family, Freedom, and the American Spirit

This weekend, the heart of Colorado came alive at the Douglas County Fairgrounds as thousands gathered for a powerful celebration of community, country, and the Constitution at the Freedom Festival, an event that reminded people of the enduring values that have shaped America: faith, family, courage, service, and freedom.

Spearheaded by Heidi Ganahl’s Rocky Mountain Voice, 710 KNUS, and Jeff Hunt, the festival was more than a gathering; it was a movement of gratitude and hope.

Under the clear Colorado skies, families, neighbors, veterans, leaders, and patriots gathered to celebrate the blessings and responsibilities of living in a free nation.

The atmosphere was charged with energy, optimism, and a deep sense of connection. It was a reminder that America is not merely an idea written on paper; it is a living story carried forward by every-

day people who believe that freedom is worth protecting and passing on to future generations.

One of the most moving moments came from Beverly Vance, the mother of Vice President JD Vance, who shared her story with remarkable honesty and vulnerability. Speaking openly about her struggles with addiction, she offered a message of redemption, resilience, and the power of transformation. Her authenticity connected with the crowd because it reflected something deeply human: people can overcome hardship, families can heal, and hope can emerge from even the darkest seasons.

Laughter and truth filled the stage as Greg Gutfeld shared his passion for comedy and his belief in the importance of humor in a free society. With his signature wit, he spoke about his frustration with cancel culture and the dangers he sees in ideological conformity. His

The younger generation was represented by Nick Shirley, whose enthusiasm and energy captivated attendees. Music became a powerful expression of patriotism when legendary entertainer Larry Gatlin shared his heart through song. His tribute expressed gratitude for America, honoring the sacrifices, stories, and dreams that connect generations.

Colorado pride was on full display as Chris Wright, a Colorado

native, spoke about the importance of affordable, reliable energy while protecting the environment. He emphasized the balance between economic strength, innovation, and responsible stewardship of the natural world.

Perhaps the most unforgettable moments came through faith-filled prayers led by Detroit Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who delivered the invocation at President Trump’s inauguration. With passion, conviction, and unmistakable joy, Pastor Sewell called the crowd to prayer, gratitude, and a blessing over the nation. His powerful words prompted people to stand, praise, and join in a shared expression of faith and hope.

Included in this wonderful, wild, patriot-filled weekend were workshops, exhibitors, candidate meetand-greets, food, and fellowship with like-minded individuals who love Colorado and the country.

The Freedom Festival was ultimately a celebration of what unites communities: neighbors caring for

neighbors, families standing strong, citizens engaging in their country’s future, and people recognizing that freedom is both a gift and a responsibility.

The festival re-energized all who attended. This is what we all needed to be encouraged and engaged in making our country great again. It does not happen without citizen action.

At a time when division often dominates headlines, the Douglas County Fairgrounds became a place of unity, encouragement, and celebration. The message was simple yet powerful: America’s story is still being written by people who believe in faith, family, freedom, and the promise of a better tomorrow.

Clark’s 2nd Open title adds to Optimist legacy

Bob Meyer sat in front of a television in his Castle Rock home, his gaze fixed on the 18th green at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, almost 3,000 miles east on New York’s Long Island.

Wyndham Clark, a Denver native, hovered over a long putt, about 60 feet from the hole.

If Clark could get down in two, he’d be U. S. Open champion for the second time in four years, and Meyer could again feel he played a small role in Clark’s growth from beginner to major champion.

Clark stroked his putt and the ball undulated—deliberately—across the lightning-fast green, working its way toward the cup. “A beautiful lag,” Meyer said later.

After what seemed like a minute or more but was only seconds, Clark’s putt came to a stop, mere inches from its intended destination. A tap-in was all that remained between him and a one-shot victory over Sam Burns.

Clark’s widowed dad, Randall, surprised his son by catching a redeye flight to be present for the Open’s final round and gave him a prolonged hug during the greenside celebration that followed.

Meyer filled with pride.

The embodiment of Optimist International’s “Friend of Youth” motto, Meyer had met Clark almost 17 years earlier, when Wyndham was a little-known junior golfer. He hadn’t yet won his two Class 4A state high school titles as a Valor Christian student.

At the time, Meyer was chair of the Optimist Club of Monaco South Junior Golf Program, which organized an annual qualifying tournament for young players from all of Colorado and the southern third of Wyoming, Qualifiers, usually around 60, spread across seven age groups and both genders, advanced to an international tournament in Florida—at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. The trip was chaperoned by Meyer and others.

(Optimist International still conducts the tournament in Florida, at Doral now, and the Monaco South club still supports the local qualifier.

But the junior golf program became a 501(c) (3) this year, and Meyer is president of the non-profit’s Board of Directors.)

Wyndham Clark played in the finals at PGA National twice, in 2008 and 2009. It was during his second trip— as a 15-year-old—that Meyer got to know him up close and personal.

“Wyndham and I were on the same flight to Florida,” Meyer recalls. “His father asked me if I would give Wyndham a ride to the resort.”

Their conversation was what you’d expect between an adult stranger and a pubescent youth: cordial but nothing memorable.

Clark didn’t win it all either year he played in the Florida tournament, but the exposure to high-level competition and a PGA-caliber course certainly helped him develop into the champion he has become.

Besides those two state

high school titles (in 2009 and 2011) and his two major championships, Clark’s resume includes (among many achievements): Three other PGA Tour victories, the 2023 Wells Fargo, the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the 2026 CJ Cup Byron Nelson; Participation in the 2023 Ryder Cup and 2024 President’s Cup; Numerous collegiate titles and honors; and Colorado Golf Association Junior Stroke Play in 2009 (winning by 11 shots) and CGA Stroke Play the next year (at 16, the youngest winner in 39 years).

The Optimist Club of Monaco South is celebrating its golden anniversary this year, and the junior golf program, in which it has been involved for more than 30 years, is one of the club’s approximately 50 youth and community projects. More than 5,000 junior golfers from Colorado and southern Wyoming have participated over the three-plus decades.

Clark isn’t the only local player to get a start on a professional career in the Opti-

mist Junior Golf Program.

Mark Hubbard, who won the Boys 16-18 age group Optimist championship in 2009 at PGA National, attended Colorado Academy.

He has career earnings of more than $13 million since turning pro in 2012.

And Jennifer Kupcho, a two-time 4A state prep champion while attending Jefferson Academy, won the first Augusta National Women’s Championship in 2019 and so far has won four LPGA tournaments, including one major (the 2022 Chevron).

She finished first in the Colorado-Wyoming Optimist District qualifier in both 2011 and 2012 and competed at PGA National.

Housing is a keystone indicator to the health of the economy.

So much pivots on the industry: landscapint, furniture purchases, retail. When housing starts are down, the economy is under stress.

There are two phenomena affecting the economy today. Both are the result of faulty Monetary Policy.

Both negatively impact the private economy. Both are at cross-purpose, they counter-act each other, leaving the economy in limbo. Great uncertainty fosters paralisis and stagflation.

Personally, I have high hopes on the new Fed Chair addressing the source of our current economic malaise.

Higher interest rates have a depressive effect on activity, the cost of borrowing increases when fed fund rates increase. The fed fund rate indirectly affects loan rates, by driving up bank cost of funds. Granted the Fed Reserve only impacts the overnight rate, but their action or inaction can influence the long rate.

Second, excess supply of money, starting in 2008, caused severe dollar devaluation (inflation). Money supply (liquidity) should be stimulative, however, the massive infusion of dollars into the economy, through QE, devalued the dollar resulting in substantial price inflation. This has undermined the citizens ability to meet his regular obligations. So excess money supply has become depressive.

The new Fed Reserve Chairman is aware of these problems. If anyone can fix the problem, he can. He recognizes that inflation is not going to be fixed by strangling the economy with high interest rates. Further, he has stated that excess money is the problem and intends to reduce same. As we’ve been saying for 20 years, reducing money supply is the correct answer to the problems in our economy.

The crux of spending is that every dollar the government spends comes from the citizen. The big government politicians talk about how they will fix all problems through spending, but they never, once, say what the source of that money is: Taxes and national debt, that citizens pay back, is the source of spending by our elected officials.

Reduce the money supply available for politicians to spend, by reducing dollars in circulation, will force less spending. Less government spending means the citizen keeps more of what he earned. Who is going to spend more wisely?

The person who earned the money through hard work or the person who stole the money through taxation.

Reducing money supply causes short -term pain, like an addicts withdrwal from heroin. It means that politcians and bureaucrats can no longer spend nor go into debt. This single act will return liberty and freedom to the private economy. In other words, the citizen will get to keep more of what he earns and spend less on taxes and federal debt service.

Who has the power to disclaim an inheritance?

Under the Colorado Uniform Disclaimer of Property Interests Act, a person may disclaim, in whole or in part, any interest or power over property, including a power of appointment.

A person may disclaim the interest or power even if its creator imposed a spendthrift provision or similar restriction on transfer or a restriction or limitation on the right to disclaim.

Except to the extent a fiduciary’s right to disclaim is expressly restricted or limited by another statute

in Colorado or by the instrument creating the fiduciary relationship, a fiduciary may disclaim, in whole or in part, any interest in or power over property, including a power of appointment, whether acting in a personal or representative capacity. A fiduciary may disclaim the interest or power even if the creator imposed a spendthrift provision or similar restriction on transfer or a restriction or limitation on the right to disclaim, or if an instrument other than the instrument that created the fiduciary relationship imposed a restriction on the right to

disclaim.

To be effective, a disclaimer shall be in writing or other record, declare the disclaimer, describe the interest or power disclaimed, be signed by the person making the disclaimer, and be delivered or filed, and, with regard to an interest in real property,

be recorded in the County where the real property is located.

A partial disclaimer may be expressed as a fraction, percentage, monetary amount, term of years, limitation of a power, or any other interest or estate in the property.

A disclaimer becomes irrevocable when it is delivered or filed and, with regard to an interest in real property, recorded according to law, or when it becomes effective.

No person obligated to distribute an interest disclaimed shall be liable to any person for distributing the interest as if the interest were not disclaimed unless the person obligated to distribute the interest receives a copy of the disclaimer prior to distributing the interest. The disclaimer must be delivered within 9 months of the decedent’s death and must be made before receiving anything of value, or any benefit from the disclaimed inheritance.

Because of the complexity, strict timeline and tax implications, it is highly recommended to consult with an experienced estate planning attorney.

What are the four key medical/estate plan documents you need now?

Many of my clients have asked: “What are the critical estate plan documents to have?” Merely being married does not give you the legal right to gain access to your spouse’s medical records or make medical decisions on your spouse’s behalf, even in an emergency.

To avoid this problem and to help others care for you and to achieve your overall estate planning goals, the following documents create an effective medical/estate plan package: 1. Healthcare Power of Attorney; 2. General Financial Power of Attorney; 3. Advanced Directive for Medical/Surgical Treatment (“Living Will”); and 4. Will (or a Will with a Trust).

Careful medical/estate planning should include preparation and signing of these documents, to accomplish your goals and protect you, both during your lifetime, and at the time of passing. The Power of Attorney documents allow you to designate those agents whom you authorize to help you on your behalf during your lifetime, and the Will/Trust documents allow you to nominate others to help with your estate after your passing, as well as to identify the beneficiaries and the distributions to them, to accomplish your estate planning goals.
