There are so many products out there that it seems like we are always trying something new. Unfortunately, skincare can expire and there are certain expiration dates that really do matter. So it may be time to go through the bathroom cabinets and throw some things away.

3. As products are exposed to air/ water/environment they can change chemical structure and cause irritation on the skin.

Big Elephants Shouldn’t Even Try to Use Small Exits Quick! Spell enthymeme. Now monadnock. How about tessaraconter?

No fair. You looked!

Those are just a few of the words 14-year-old Shrey Parikh of San Bernardino, California spelled correctly to win the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. In order, they refer to a type of argument, an isolated hill or mountain and a galley with forty banks of oars. I think I put them in the right order anyway.

I’m banking on the fact that you wouldn’t know if I didn’t.

The annual Scripps Spelling Bee is open to students who haven’t completed eighth grade, aren’t yet 15 years old and haven’t already won it. I’m obviously not qualified to compete and not because I’ve already won it. It’s too bad because I’m an excellent speller. Also, a liar.

I’m embarrassed to admit that there are some words that stump me every time I try to spell them and “embarrassed” is one of them. Also accommodate, Worcestershire, conscientious, pneumonia and bureaucracy. It’s not my fault. As you can see, the words I struggle with tend to have unnecessary letters. It’s like someone was just trying to make them harder for students and spelling bee contestants.

I was so inspired by Mr. Parikh that I decided to become a better speller myself. I went to that source of all knowledge, the internet, where I found many mnemonics or memory tricks, for remembering how to spell difficult words. Interestingly, I found no mnemonic for remembering how to spell mnemonic.

But if you have trouble with a word, chances are someone has come up with a trick for remembering it. Take the word “separate.” If you can’t remember if it’s an “E” or an “A” in the middle tell yourself there’s a “a rat” in separate. Ask anyone who’s separating from a partner and they’ll tell you it’s the person they’re separating from.

A lot of people have trouble confusing principal and principle. Just remember, your principal is your pal. That trick has been around for a long time but the confusion persists, maybe because not all children see it that way.

Do you confuse the spellings of “desert” and “dessert?”

Remember deserts are dry like sand. And sand has just one “S.” Strawberry shortcake is a dessert and it has two “S’s.” If you’re thinking, “Yes, but chocolate sundae only has one “S,” you might want to stick with writing “sweet treat served after meals” and “arid land mass” instead of dessert and desert.

Another common trick is to use the letters of difficult words

to create sentences to help you remember the spelling of the word. For example, the word “rhythm” becomes “Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move.” That could be helpful. But I can see how some people might get confused and think “Rhythm Makes My Two Hips Hurt.”

Similarly someone came up with the sentence “A Rat In The House May Eat The Ice Cream” to help spell arithmetic.

I’m glad I already know how to spell it because I can see myself thinking, “A Rat In The House AAARGH!” That wouldn’t help at all.

And then there’s the mnemon-

ic “Big Elephants Can’t Always Use Small Exits” for remembering how to spell the word “because.” But I can see me wondering, “Is it ‘Big Elephants Can’t EVER Use Small Exits?’

Or ‘Big Elephants Shouldn’t Even Try To Use Small Exits.’”

Because they shouldn’t.

Clearly this form of mnemonic has its limitations, the main one being that recalling the sentence may be harder than remembering how to spell the word. Imagine the sentences it would take to spell enthymeme, monadnock and tessaraconter?

’m going to begin my review with this sentence... If you have not been to Land of Sushi you are missing out! I’ve tried all the hot spot sushi restaurants in the Denver metro area, and this might just be my favorite. If you love Izakaya Den or Sushi Den for high quality, fresh food, then you’ll more than enjoy Land of Sushi.

It’s located on E. Arapahoe Rd. in Centennial, offering an easy casual setting. The owners Steve and Jessie have the most incredible work ethic while giving top attention to choices of the freshest fish chosen early every morning.

When they opened 25 years ago, there was good reason they needed to expand quickly to accommodate the long line of people out the door! I purposefully came in on a Monday night with my husband and 2 dear friends thinking maybe it won’t be as busy, and the place was packed through just about my entire delectable experience. They hold an impressive reputation with a committed following of people, and from what I hear this remains consistent.

Where do I begin with what we ordered?

For a cocktail I got to sip on a Kikusui “Perfect Snow” unfiltered sake. With their large fabulous menu, I’m nearly unable to pick favorites because it was ALL sooooo gooood! Ok, have you ever eaten “dry aged” sushi? It’s very special like dry aged beef, but fish, and unlike most Sushi places, Land of Sushi carries a few types. We tried the dry aged Buri (Yellow Tail), and the dry aged blue fin tuna. Both amazing!

You may ask why aged fish? Its a more concentrated flavor, improved texture, with reduced metallic or fishy notes sometimes found in very fresh fish. A must try! Several other plates consisted of spicy crispy tuna; hamachi jalapeno sashimi; pan fried pork dumpling gyoza; a perfect snow roll containing tuna, salmon, cucumber, avacado with a yellowtail belly, jalapeno, chopped ginger/cilantro wasabi dressing topping. Next a volcano roll w/fresh crab; a fire engine roll; and some spicy scallop hand rolls; and how can I forget the three kinds of super fresh Nigiri? Somehow I still had room to taste the pistachio crusted salmon, beautifully plated, full of flavor, a HUGE hit! (See photo above.)

Weiser and Bennet debate draws out differences between them On June 4, the two candidates on the June 30 Democratic primary ballot for Colorado governor, eightyear Attorney General Phil Weiser and 17-year U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, answered questions in a sideby-side forum held at the Welcome Center at the University of Denver. The event was sponsored by Denver’s 9News.

Asked why they think their party has lost popularity, especially with unaffiliated voters, Weiser said, “For too many people, the Democratic Party doesn’t show up, listen, and fight for you…I’ve gone to all 64 counties in Colorado… again and again. I show up.”

He cited as an example, “When it’s fighting the King Soopers/Safeway merger, I showed up…I did 19 town halls.”

Bennet answered, “People my kids’ age hate (both) parties. I think the Democratic Party and the Republican Party both have a lot of work to do…It’s not about showing up…Colorado is the third most expensive place to live.”

To the question about what they would say to voters who note that, “While Democrats have held power in this state, Colorado has become less affordable,” Bennet said, “We need new leadership in Colorado. This is completely unacceptable…When I was superintendent of Denver schools,

implementing the agenda that was laid out in Project 2025,” Bennet responded, regarding at least three cabinet secretaries who he voted to confirm, “None of their records is a surprise to me, but the reality is that Colorado and the American west are going through an existential fire crisis and we need the resources that the Forest Service is bringing to bear in Colorado. We need the resources that the Interior Department is bringing to bear in Colorado. The easiest vote in America is to vote against one of Donald Trump’s nominees…but when (voting for a Trump cabinet secretary) is the right thing to do to have the resources that we need…

I’ve done that.”

Weiser responded to Bennet’s answer, “When someone is breaking the law and harming you, as Brooke Rollins (Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture) has done a number of times, you don’t say, I still support you. You say…I’m sorry I voted for you…

Taking away SNAP (food) benefits from 600,000 Coloradans, you’re threatening people’s next meal, which she did twice. I sued both times. We won both times…

She tried to fire firefighters from the Forest Service last year, right before fire season. I sued. We won that too.”

That led to Bennet accusing Weiser of failing to

sue the Trump administration over actions they took during Trump’s first term, between November 2018, when Weiser was first elected attorney general, and January 2021, when Trump left office. The moderator challenged Bennet to name any of the 65 lawsuits Weiser has filed against the Trump administration during its second term from which Bennet would withdraw, given the opportunity to do so. Bennet did not identify any specific lawsuit.

Asked to name problems facing Coloradans that are not resultant from actions taken by the Trump administration, Bennet named the cost of living, including housing, health care, and child care, as well as the weakness of the state’s education system, explaining, “We need to elect a governor who has a vision for the future…That is one of the fundamental reasons I decided to run for governor.”

As problems facing Coloradans not related to actions taken or not taken by the Trump administration, Weiser named gun violence, drugs, and social media as threats to Colorado’s young people, adding he had specific plans to address them that are publicly available, including a mentoring program, and “building a Colorado Corps, calling young people to service.”

Longtime Greenwood Village Public Works Director Jeremy Hanak is moving on to Centennial

Hanak told us an important area that provided him a significant learning opportunity was the logistics, scheduling, and execution of ongoing street maintenance and snowplowing, areas in which GV is known for its excellent performance.

Those who know him have long noticed Hanak’s commitment to service.

When we asked him why he had not taken his ample skill set to the private sector, he said, “The reason for staying in government is the ownership and opportunity to make a difference every day.” In contrast, he said, “As you advance in your career on the consulting side, you have to get more into

After 18 years with the City of Greenwood Village, Public Works Director Jeremy Hanak is taking his talents to the neighboring City of Centennial, where he will fill a similar role. When we asked Hanak what he sees in his future, he told us his goal is to be a city manager.

Hanak started his career in GV in 2008 as a senior traffic engineer and was recognized with promotions over the next decade until he became public works director in 2018. The public works department has 45 full-time employees and a direct budget of $11.2 million. It also manages a host of contracted capital projects totaling from $15 million to $30 million annually.

Asked how he planned to get people to trust him to make the state more affordable, Weiser said, “If you’re a teacher anywhere in Colorado, you should be able to afford a starter home in the community where you work. If you’re a firefighter or a police officer, it’s important that you be able to live in your community.

That’s what people deserve and it’s not the case right now. When you look at my track record—on the opioid crises for example--you see that I can bring people together, across this state, to get things done…I will build a plan so that we can have starter homes that are affordable by incentivizing the types of homes we need.

Noting that, as attorney general, Weiser has used filing lawsuits as a tool to attack problems facing Coloradans, he was asked how he will solve problems as governor, when lawsuits are no longer his main weapon.

Weiser responded, “When I took on the opioid crisis, I took on companies like Purdue Pharma…I brought back $900 million to Colorado…I worked across the state…We brought everybody together, a community of practice that didn’t exist, that now exists to address the crisis...to build peer counseling to help people live in recovery. I’ve shown leadership by listening and by getting things done.”

Asked why he supported more of President Trump’s cabinet picks than most other Democratic senators, including some “who are

technological update of the city’s system of traffic signals. As with many aspects of technology, the improvements that were made are virtually invisible, but they have improved the experience of navigating the city’s roads. For example, few people realize there are now

cameras at most GV signalized intersections that “see” the number of cars waiting to turn left, and time the left turn arrow accordingly.

Hanak told The Villager he appreciates the fact that GV has been willing to commit funding for traffic flow improvements, including the

ongoing maintenance costs to keep them working efficiently.

Another significant accomplishment that occurred under Hanak’s watch was the revamp of the flow of traffic around the Village Center, especially Fiddler’s Green Circle, that markedly improved the efficiency of the roadways in the area. It is a significant reason why the average time it takes to clear traffic leaving Fiddler’s Green after concerts is 18 minutes.

During his years in GV, Hanak also oversaw the redesign of the Arapahoe Road and I-25 exit, installation of the TING Fiber network, and ongoing operation and regular renewal of the city’s trash and recycling contract, along with the

the business development and financial side of making a profit. I want to continue providing services and building projects that improve the quality of life every day.”

In addition to gaining more management and leadership experience, Hanak looks forward to learning new things in Centennial, including, “a different perspective on public works,” that it is more oriented to the use of contracts than direct employees for basic public services. Hanak shared with The Villager, “I look forward to getting involved in major

development projects going on there, broadening my experience and learning, as I work toward being a city manager in the future.”

hile the nationwide battle over the use of overt gerrymandering is ongoing, leading up to this year’s midterm election and the 2028 presidential election, Colorado Congressional District 8, our state’s newest, is demonstrating how close elections can be when lines are drawn to avoid gerrymandering and promote fairness. The first Member of Congress to be elected in the brand-new district was Democrat Yadira Caraveo in 2022, who beat Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer by 0.7%. In 2024, Republican Gabe Evans ousted Caraveo in her bid for re-election, by 0.7%. This year, two Democratic state representatives, Shannon Bird and Manny Rutinel, are vying for the Democratic nomination to try to wrest

the seat from Evans, in what has been a very expensive primary. In addition to $1.8 million in direct donations to Bird, she has reportedly been aided by another $1.7 million in spending by independent expenditure committees. Rutinel has raised $3.5 million, in addition to over $4 million reportedly being spent for his benefit by outside groups. __________________________

A Quick Journey Through Japan As our bullet train sped toward Tokyo at nearly 200 miles per hour, the clouds suddenly parted, revealing Mount Fuji in all its snowcapped majesty.

For most of our trip to Japan, Fuji remained hidden behind clouds. We searched for it from Hakone, one of the country’s most popular viewing spots, without success. Then, on our final day, nature rewarded our patience. The sight of Japan’s most iconic landmark rising above the countryside was a fitting finale to a memorable journey.

Japan had been on our bucket list, and last year, Ellen and I finally made it happen. We had only a little over a week, hardly enough time to do the country justice, but enough to experience a fascinating blend of ancient tradition and modern efficiency.

Getting there from Denver was surprisingly easy. United operates a daily nonstop flight to Tokyo.

We left Denver around midday and arrived in Japan early the next afternoon.

From Narita Airport, we took the train into Tokyo and walked to our hotel. Public transportation in Japan is remarkably easy to navigate. With Google Maps—or increasingly ChatGPT—first-time visitors can confidently find their way around.

Determined to make the most of our limited time, we hired a guide and driver for a daylong tour of Tokyo. We visited the Imperial Palace grounds, crossed the famous Shibuya Crossing, and explored Ginza, Tokyo’s upscale shopping district. One highlight was Mitsukoshi, Japan’s oldest department store, which has served customers since the 17th century.

Of course, no visit to Tokyo would be complete without authentic ramen. A simple bowl of noodles turned out to be one of the

The next day, we traveled to Hakone, a mountain resort town west of Tokyo known for its views of Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. Like many visitors before us, we stared hopefully into the clouds, knowing Fuji lay somewhere behind them.

We did visit the beautiful Hakone Shrine, nestled among towering trees beside Lake Ashi.

In hindsight, given our limited time, I probably would have spent an extra day exploring Tokyo.

From Tokyo, we boarded one of Japan’s famous Shinkansen bullet trains bound for Kyoto. The experience alone was worth the trip. The trains arrive and depart with astonishing precision, often measured in seconds rather than minutes. Boarding is orderly, quiet, and efficient. During the journey, passengers spoke softly, if at all.

No loud conversations, music, or phone calls—only a calm respect for fellow travelers.

This time, luck was on our side.

The clouds parted, revealing Japan’s most famous landmark in all its glory. The view lasted only a few minutes, yet it was one of those travel moments that stays with you forever.

Beyond the sights and attractions, what impressed me most about Japan was its culture. The Japanese are quiet, respectful, and exceptionally polite. Public spaces are clean, orderly, and remarkably free of litter.

One curiosity for visitors is the near absence of public trash cans.

Following the 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo’s subway system, many public receptacles were removed for security reasons. Today, people are expected to carry their trash until they return home. The result is one of the cleanest countries I have ever visited.

We barely scratched the surface of what Japan offers. Hiroshima and Nagasaki offer important historical perspective. The northern regions offer world-class skiing in winter. Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms, a seasonal spectacle that draws visitors from around the world.

Japan is a country where ancient temples stand alongside high-speed trains, and centuries-old traditions coexist with cutting-edge technology. Even after a short visit, it is easy to understand why so many travelers return again and again.

If Japan is on your bucket list, my advice is simple: go.

Every patient needs someone taking notes We were in our kitchen, playing a friendly game of Scrabble as we often do after dinner, when a medical alert we’d never seen before disrupted our tranquility.

I looked at the message on my wrist and initially didn’t know its importance.

You may recall that last November, at Thanksgiving, I wrote a column reflecting on my experiences after being diagnosed with inoperable esophageal cancer and spending two weeks hospitalized and another in rehab.

Bob Sweeney, Villager founder/co-publisher (with his wife Gerri), asked me to share my thoughts on the subject with our readers, so I did. I received replies from several for whom it touched a nerve.

I’m at it again, also because Bob feels this part of my ongoing story might help others who are contending with medical issues.

The alert in this case came from my Apple Watch. It was sending a medical alarm that my pulse rate had dropped to 40—dangerously low for a man of 80-plus.

(A pulse rate of 60 beats per minute is considered the minimum acceptable rate for a male beyond normal retirement age,) My purpose here is not to promote a brand of watches, but I must say that, if you can afford one that provides various health notifications, it’s a good investment. I wouldn’t have known my heart rate had dropped to a dangerously low without the watch alerting me.

My wife immediately stepped in, directing me to walk a couple laps around the house while she retrieved our blood pressure monitor to get a reading.

And that’s my first takeaway to share. Everyone needs someone who takes charge in the face of a perceived emergency—emphasis on “perceived” because the seriousness of any given health episode is not always immediately obvious.

When my heart rate didn’t rebound, she quickly packed us off to the Urgent Care Unit at Kaiser Permanente’s Lone Tree complex. After more than an hour of tests and an IV, they shipped me to the Emergency Room at nearby Sky Ridge Hospital.

Another lesson: Act quickly.

After more efforts to diagnose and treat my low heart rate, which had dropped to 35, I was admitted for what turned out to be a 12-day stay that included an overnight in the Intensive Care Unit.

Early in that almost two weeks I had a stress test that identified a blockage in my heart, which was treated on the spot with a stent. Later, I was

catheterized when I was on the verge of kidney failure.

As this unfolded, my chemo infusions for cancer treatment were suspended, and some medications I was taking were put on hold because they had negative side effects for my heart and/or kidney issues.

Through it all—and this is the critical lesson, the most crucial takeaway—my wife recorded everything in a notebook she’d been keeping since my cancer diagnosis at the end of last June.

She has notes and names from every meeting with a doctor, every visit by a nurse, every result of a test (including daily vitals) and every change of medication. If she has a question about anything, she has documentation on which her query is based.

That’s especially important for two reasons.

First, doctors do their best to explain what’s going on; the treatment steps they’re taking; the medications they’re prescribing; risks, if any; and maybe a prognosis. Usually, that’s a lot of information— more than most people can remember and grasp when hearing it all for the first time, often in a crisis situation.

Second, particularly in a 24-hour hospital, information (sometimes conflicting or contradictory) comes from many sources. Nurses and their assistants mostly work three 12-hour shifts per week (resulting in several caregivers in any seven-day span) and doctors generally visit each patient only once each day when making rounds.

Another reason to keep a notebook is medical lexicon.

Your advocate, especially if he or she is a family member or otherwise not part of the medical profession, can ask the correct spelling of medications, learn the specific conditions they treat and their side effects, and express what they’re hearing in words more easily understood by laymen.

This isn’t a sequel to that November column in the cancer sense, but the concept of someone to keep notes throughout a serious illness applies to any situation that requires significant medical treatment.

Some have suggested that “patient advocate” become an occupation, with a college course of study. But I’m not sure that’s the best approach.

The not-so-empty nest: How to help adult kids achieve financial liftoff When your children turn to you for financial support — and a roof over their heads — these tips from Merrill can help you give them the tools they need to move forward on their own.

Most parents have mixed feelings about achieving empty-nest status.

They miss their kids but take great pride in knowing they have set them on the path to financial independence. So when a report comes out documenting an increase in “boomerang kids” — young adults coming home to live with their parents — there is cause for concern.

According to a 2024 Pew Research report, “Parents, Young Adult Children and the Transition to Adulthood,” 57% of young adults aged 18–24 live with their parents — up from 53% 30 years ago. Among 25- to 29-year-olds, 21% live with a parent, up from 16%. If they are not living with their parents, many get help with rent or mortgage payments: According to a Better Money Habits Bank of America survey, “2024: The State of Gen Z’s Financial Health,” 54% of adult members of Generation Z (18–27 at the time) do not pay for their own housing.

Clearly, for many parents, the empty nest is not so empty. Plus, according to the Pew report, 44% of young adults say they received some sort of financial assistance from their parents during the past year.1 Young adults face many financial pressures: inflation, student debt and high mortgage rates, among them. Fortunately, for many parents, helping the kids is not a burden. In the Pew study, only 36% of parents said doing so had adversely impacted their financial situation somewhat in the last year.1 These not-so-emptynesters are more likely to be focused on finding ways to help their kids stand on their own financially.

“Of course, you want to be there for your children when they need financial help,” says Bank of America’s financial gerontologist, Cynthia Hutchins. “But the most important thing you may be able to give them

is a refresher course in the financial basics.” Consider these ways to help your adult children establish better money habits.

Lend an ear — and some budgeting advice If your adult children are asking for help paying their bills, first ask them what financial pressures they are facing. “It can help to share the financial missteps you may have made when you were younger, as well as the financial lessons you wish you had known,” says Hutchins.

Let your kids see that mistakes can be overcome if they stick to a wellthought-out plan.

Encourage them to create a budget that prioritizes expenses, designating some things as “needs” and others as “wants.” Are your kids overspending?

Suggest that before making any major purchases they ask themselves whether they have met their savings target for the month — say, 20% of their paycheck.

Tell them about the trade-offs you made when you were starting out.

Next, schedule time for them to talk with your financial advisor, who can offer perspective on the value of having a financial plan and ideas on how to pursue their financial goals, like saving for a down payment or going back to school.

Help out — but attach strings To encourage accountability, think about structuring your financial assistance in the form of a loan, Hutchins suggests. Put it in writing and agree on a repayment schedule. While the IRS requires you to charge interest on loans to family members, the minimum required rate is usually well below what traditional lenders charge.2 If your financial support comes in the form of a large gift (a down payment, for instance, or help paying off a student loan), consider positioning

the gift as an early inheritance and adjusting your estate plan to avoid any potential sibling resentment.

Set limits — on yourself and your kids Before you commit to providing financial support, sit down with your advisor to assess your current income and expenses and discuss how you might lend a hand without losing momentum on progress toward your own goals.

When talking with your children, be candid about how much support you can offer and how long it can last. Consider limiting your financial contributions to help with essential expenses (car loan, yes; streaming services, maybe not so much) and only after they have personally covered as much as they can. You may want to give your adult child a deadline for moving out and explain that your life plans (retiring, relocating, etc.) cannot be put on hold indefinitely.

Above all, emphasizes Hutchins, “Never dip into money earmarked for your retirement, or you may end up being the one needing financial support.” Remind the kids they have 40 to 50 years of earning power ahead of them — you do not. They will understand.
