Flag Day is a holiday celebrated on June 14 Flag Day was first proposed in 1861 to rally in the United States. It commemorates the support for the Union side of the American adoption of the flag of the United States on Civil War. The Flag Resolution stated "That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

On August 3, 1949, National Flag Day was officially established by an Act of Congress.

On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale.

Space: The Final Frontier for Litterbugs I just heard an alarming news story about the increasing dangers of space garbage. What? I went straight to that source of all knowledge, the internet, to find out who’s been leaving their trash in space because it wasn’t me.

It turns out that ever since the Space Age began in the 1950s, humans have been launching rockets and satellites into space and leaving them there when they’re finished with them. Uh-oh. I feel a rant coming on.

I shouldn’t be surprised about trash in space. It’s everywhere else. A plastic grocery bag was discovered in the deepest oceanic trench on earth, the Mariana Trench.

I didn’t even know you could shop there.

And climbers have left behind literally tons of rubbish on the highest point in the world, Mount Everest. I understand them being tired from the climb, but you’d think it would be easier to carry it down than it was to carry it up.

Some people leave garbage behind wherever they go.

Then other people—me, for example—feel compelled to pick it up. If you ever follow me at a discreet distance when I’m out for a walk, you might see me picking up a soda can here and a plastic bottle there.

And depending on how good your hearing is and what you consider a discreet distance, you might also hear me muttering unkind words about the litterbugs who left them behind. By the way, they’re called litterbugs because they bug me.

Even if I’m too lazy to pick up trash—and sometimes I am—I always have the energy to grumble about the knucklehead who left it there.

I doubt I’ll be picking up litter on Mount Everest. Probably not in space either. So I’ll just have to mutter about the litterbugs responsible for it. Here goes: What are they thinking? That all their trash will just float off to some other solar system in a distant galaxy. Because that’s what I was thinking.

But no. Junk in space is like those satellites we see in the night sky, stuck in earth’s orbit going around and around. It’s like a ginormous toilet that won’t completely flush. I suppose that’s just as well. If there are creatures living in other galaxies, they might not react well to getting all of our garbage.

With all that trash floating around up there I wondered if I should start wearing a hel-

met whenever I leave home.

I was relieved to learn that I have less than one in a trillion chance of being injured by falling space junk. I figure I have a better chance of being hit by an empty soda can when some litterbug overhears me calling him a knucklehead..

Maybe space litterers think, “What’s the big deal? There’s so much …well…space in space.” Apparently it’s not enough for all the spent rockets and dead satellites. There’s plenty of smaller space junk too, for example—fragments from collisions and explosions. Also tools that have been lost during spacewalks.

Talk about misplacing your

hammer.

And all that debris travels at speeds of about 17,000 miles per hour as it orbits the earth. A rogue hammer could really do some damage at that speed.

If you’re thinking of boarding a SpaceX flight, you’ll be happy to know that all that junk won’t make it impossible to fly in space. But it will make it more dangerous and expensive. Darn. That leaves me out. But you go ahead.

And pick up some trash while you’re there.

A second telegraph is sent to E.J. Brooks, Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C., dated Denver, Colo. July 8, 1879.

The second letter is shorter as follows: “Letter from Indian Agent Meeker dated July 2, just received, asks me to appeal to military, and says the commander at Ft. Steele pays no attention to his repeated requests to keep Indians where they belong. He says Chief Douglas has sent scouts to recall his band, but the other Indians belong to nobody. I have no information whether they have started home. The Utes have burned more timber the last few weeks than white settlers have cut in twenty years.” Signed; FREDERICK W. PITKIN, Governor.

Troops were eventually sent, triggering the Meeker Massacre that occurred at The White River Agency September 29, 1879. The battle occurred as the troops, led by Major Thornburgh, approached Milk Creek, 20 miles Northeast of Meeker where the fighting occurred.

It does appear that Gov. Pitkin [notably Pitkin County, probably named after him] was not fond of the Ute Indians.

Maybe Pitkin County should acquire a new name.

It is apparent that at this time in history the gold rush was on, and Indians were not very popular, losing their happy hunting grounds.

These interesting letters reveal some sentiment at that time in history.

Time capsule opened

Mayor George Lantz and Villager Government Reporter Freda Miklin On May 31, 1997, when Greenwood Village opened its then-new city hall, it sealed a time capsule and set the opening date for 2025 to coincide with the city's 75th anniversary. On June 2, Mayor George Lantz opened the time capsule. It contained photos of the city council and key staff members, a list of all the city’s mayors to that date, a city map, the 1997 city budget, the 1991 comprehensive plan, a goals statement for the city council, and a copy of the Villager Newspaper from May 29, 1997.

Colorado DMV Issues Urgent Warning on New Text Scam Threatening Prosecution and License Suspension The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting Coloradans to a new wave of fraudulent text messages. Scammers are now directly impersonating the DMV, falsely claiming recipients have unpaid tickets and threatening severe consequences such as prosecution, suspension of vehicle registration, and revocation of driving privileges. These claims are entirely false and designed to intimidate individuals into immediate compliance.

These deceptive text messages are crafted to appear as official communications from the Colorado DMV. Their primary goal is to frighten recipients into clicking malicious links and divulging personal or financial information under the guise of settling non-existent violations.

While the exact wording can vary, these fraudulent texts typically: State they are from the “Colorado DMV” or a similar official-sounding entity.

Allege outstanding unpaid tickets or violations.

Life in

Threaten imminent legal action, such as prosecution.

Warn of pending suspension of vehicle registration and/or driving privileges.

Contain a link to a fake website to “resolve” the issue or make a payment.

It is critical for all Coloradans to understand: These messages are NOT from the Colorado DMV. The DMV does not initiate contact via unsolicited text messages to demand payment for tickets or to threaten prosecution or suspension of privileges in this manner.

If you receive a suspicious text message claiming to be from the DMV: • Do NOT click on any links.

These links often lead to fake websites designed to steal your information.

• Do NOT share any personal or financial information.

This includes your driver’s license number, Social Security number, credit card details, or banking information.

• Do NOT reply to the text message.

If you are concerned about the status of your driver’s license, vehicle registration, or any potential tickets, contact the Colorado DMV directly through its official website at dmv.colorado.gov or by phone at (303) 205-5600. Do not use any contact information provided in the suspicious text.

If you have not engaged in any activity that would result in a ticket or penalty, it is almost certainly a scam.

Anyone who receives one of these fraudulent texts is encouraged to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Be sure to include the phone number or email that sent the message and the website linked in the text.

The Colorado DMV urges all residents to be extremely cautious and to share this warning with friends and family. Vigilance is key to protecting your personal information from these evolving scams.

South Metro Fire Rescue is facing a $270M budget shortfall over the next 10 years At its study session on June 2, members of the Greenwood Village City Council were told by Rich Sokol, South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) board treasurer, that the fire department is facing a budget shortfall of $16 million in 2026, along with “nearly $270 million over the next 10 years—all while demand for emergency services continues to grow.”

Also attending the meeting representing SMFR were its Board Chair Jim Albee, Board Vice-Chair Renee Anderson, Chief Government Affairs Officer Mike Dell’Orfano, and Chief Financial Officer Stephanie Corbo.

Sokol explained, “We have made no decisions yet, but we have a significant revenue issue, so we’re going to all our partner cities and towns to lay out

the facts and get your feedback...to hear from you as our trusted partners.”

He presented a PowerPoint that explained, “South Metro is a full-service

department providing fire and emergency medical response and community risk reduction services to residents and businesses (comprised of) 30 stations across

287 square miles and 800 personnel across eight divisions serving 571,500 residents, a number that is expected to grow to 595,000 by 2029. It includes 12 municipalities and most of Arapahoe County, Douglas County, and east Jefferson County.”

Salaries and benefits, he pointed out, account for 86% of all SMFR costs.

He also clarified that SMFR, which operates with no debt, “used to be 50/50 between residential and commercial property taxes. Now, the breakdown is 36% of revenue is from commercial property, which continues to decline, and 64% of revenue is from residential property,” noting that “recent increases in home values are not enough to offset the decrease in commercial revenue.”

He continued, “Because of legislative changes (in HB24B-1001 Concerning Property Tax), we are going to have a significant revenue decrease. Our peak revenue was in 2024. Based on the projections from our CFO, we’re not likely to get there until the 2030s,” adding, “We take our financial stewardship very seriously…We do not think about a tax increase lightly…This is a very serious decision for us and we

wouldn’t do it unless it was absolutely necessary.”

Next, Sokol talked about SMFR’s work, sharing, “We call ourselves a fire department, but two-thirds of our calls are EMS—ambulance calls. It’s a little bit misleading because the fire truck is usually first on scene with extremely well-trained staff who provide advanced lifesaving techniques. The ambulance is often there just to transport the person to the hospital.” He showed a chart with data that demonstrated a 24% increase in calls to SMFR between 2019 and 2024 and a 25% increase in EMS response.

GV City Council Member Paul Wiesner wanted to know more about SMFR’s budget shortfall. Sokol explained, “If the state hadn’t made the changes (in HB24B-1001), I doubt we would be here. They significantly lowered the assessment rate on residential property, from 7.2% to 6.9%--now it’s 6.25%--roughly a 20% decrease,” adding, “There’s been at least three changes to the property tax laws by the legislature in the past two years. The first change included a backfill for fire districts and other special districts” to make up for the decrease in revenues resulting from the reduction in the assessment rate, adding, “In the last iteration, passed last summer, that backfill is gone.”

Sokol also expressed SMFR’s concern that it could lose some or all of the $7 million to $8 million it receives annually from Medicaid for services it provides to Medicaid recipients because of “all the cuts to Medicaid and state budget issues.”

When a question was raised about why SMFR sends a fire truck to a medical emergency, Sokol explained, “We have many more fire trucks than we

have ambulances and we have someone on every truck who is trained in advance life support, prepared to treat on the scene.” Board Chair Albee added, “It takes a lot of resources on the scene to do all the work that is necessary for a heart attack,” i.e., more than the two people who ride in an ambulance.

Mayor Lantz wanted to know if SMFR had exhausted every possibility for cutting costs. Sokol said SMFR had increased the amount firefighters contribute to their benefits and lowered salaries for new administrative employees, but, he said, “With 86% of our costs being people, we are going to have to cut people (without new revenue).”

A question was asked about administration costs versus direct costs. Sokol explained that, “We say we have 500 firefighters and 300 administrative personnel, but that 300 includes all our fire inspectors and all our fire marshals.”

SMFR CFO Stephanie Corbo added clarification, “We have about 634 employees who are considered line, including district chiefs. We have a big dispatch team. We have the fire marshals’ office. Those aren’t included in the line numbers. The number of staff positions related to internal service—HR, IT, Finance—is probably 30 people.

Field of candidates for Colorado Congressional District Eight keeps growing When H.R. 1, the controversial Republican-sponsored budget reconciliation bill named the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives 215-214 on May 22, 2025, it was clear that every vote in the House of Representatives matters.

As of this writing, five Democrats have announced their intention to compete for the nomination to challenge one-term incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans for his seat in Congress representing Colorado Congressional District Eight (CD8), in 2026.

CD8 was formed in 2021 after the 2020 U.S. Census determined a new district in our state was warranted by the increase in population since the previous census.

It was drawn by Colorado’s Independent Redistricting Commission, which was created by the state’s voters to end gerrymandering. CD8 is widely viewed as being the most evenly balanced, politically, of the state’s congressional districts.

Of the other seven districts, four are considered to lean Democratic and three Republican.

CD8 goes along north Interstate 25 and encompasses parts of Adams, Larimer, and Weld Counties, including the cities of Brighton, Commerce City, Greeley, Johnstown, Northglenn, and Thornton. It is 52% White and 39% Hispanic.

In the first election there in 2022, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo bested Republican state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer by 1,632 votes out of 250,269 cast, a margin of 0.65%. In 2024, current U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans beat Caraveo in her bid for re-election by 2,449 votes out of 333,609 cast, a margin of 0.73%.

The first Democrat out of the gate to announce a challenge to Evans in 2026 was one-term state Rep. Manny Rutinel, on January 27, followed by Evans’ predecessor in the seat, Yadira Caraveo, on April 15. State Rep. Shannon Bird announced her plans to enter the race on May 20. Next to declare his intent to compete for the Democratic nomination was outgoing Colorado State Treasurer and former state Rep. Dave Young on June 4.

On June 6, Amie Baca-Oehlert, former president of the state’s teacher’s union, joined the crowd.

Rep. Bird has served in the general assembly since 2019. She chaired the newly formed Colorado Opportunity Caucus this year, a group of Democrats who describe themselves as being “committed to collaboration over conflict and progress over partisanship.” Rep. Bird was a prime sponsor of HB25-1272 Construction Defects & Middle Market Housing, a bill passed this year after many years of trying to make it easier to build condos and townhomes in Colorado. She was also vice-chair of the all-important, bipartisan Joint Budget Committee and the Appropriations Committee in the 2025 legislature.

Dave Young is a former middle school math, science, and technology teacher. As state Treasurer, he “prioritized transparency, fiscal responsibility, and programs that provide real value to everyday Coloradans.” On why he wants to represent

CD8 in the Congress, Young told CPR News, “I know how to do the work. I’ve got a track record to show I’ve done it, especially on Medicaid and on the kitchen table economic issues that families face.”

He pointed to Evans vote to support the GOP’s “cuts to Medicaid and other safety net programs,” as a reason he decided to run, calling that vote “a bright moral line for me.” Young has been public about his disabled sister who relies on Medicaid.

He believes, “I don’t think he (Evans) or others that voted in favor of that bill understand the devastation that will occur for families and for individuals that really rely heavily on Medicaid.”

Prior to being elected state Treasurer in 2018, Dave Young served in the general assembly for eight years, where he, like Bird, was a member of the Joint Budget Committee. He also served as chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

In her announcement to regain the seat she held from 2022-2024, Caraveo said, “I can’t stand by while Gabe Evans

Rutinel joined the general assembly when he was appointed to represent state House District 32 by a

vacancy committee in October 2023, after Sen. Dafna Michaelson Jenet resigned the seat when she was appointed to the state Senate by another vacancy committee to replace former state Sen. Dominick Moreno, who resigned to serve in the administration of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston.

Rutinel was elected to his first full term in 2024.

According to reports, Rutinel raised around $400,000 from 4,000 individual donors in the first 24 hours after making his announcement, and that number rose to over $500,000 one day later.

Baca-Oehlert told Chalkbeat Colorado, an education website, that she “plans to lean on her experience as an educator and leader of the Colorado Education Association to focus on the issues that impact everyday Coloradans, such as the economy,” explaining, “I plan to work on the things that allow people to live the American Dream.”

No Republicans have announced plans to challenge Evans in a primary for the nomination.

The vehicle of the week has been a Toyota Land Cruiser assembled in Homura, Tokyo, Japan. This is one of the best-selling SUVs with a long history of success for current owners and for aspiring owners. (I won’t dwell in this column about what is going to happen after the 10-year warranty runs out on electric vehicle batteries) This Land Cruiser is a great drive, powered by an I-FORCE MAX 2.4L 4 cylinder turbo engine and an eight-speed automatic

transmission. Mileage for a large, rugged, Land Cruiser is 23 mpg overall. There are three drive modes; eco, sport and normal with a dial hidden on the dash and hard to read. I used “sport” for high-speed freeways and mountain roads, and “eco” for fuel efficiency in city traffic and descending mountain highways.

I had quite a few pedestrians comment on the Land Cruiser; the bright blue paint and the rugged appearance has a pleasing appearance. The performance is perfection for this vehicle that is nimble and fast, with a long list of safety features. Centennial Institute endorses Protect Kids, Colorado’s citizenled initiatives to Safeguard Children Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University has announced its full support for all three ballot initiatives being advanced by Protect Kids Colorado, a grassroots coalition working to ensure the health, safety, and dignity of Colorado’s children.

These citizen-led referenda aim to enshrine commonsense protections in Colorado law: 1. Combatting Child Sex Trafficking with Harsh Penalties: This initiative seeks to establish significantly increased criminal penalties for individuals convicted of child sex trafficking in Colorado. The Curtis Center for the Arts is honored to host the 21st Annual Mile High Pastel Exhibition and Sale presented by the Pastel Society of Colorado

The show, which opened on May 16 and will be on display through June 28, 2025, is free to attend and open to the public for viewing during regular gallery hours (M-F 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sat. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) at 2349 East Orchard Road in Greenwood Village.

The Mile High Pastel Exhibition was juried by Karen Margulis, an accomplished artist and art educator best known for her luminous, expressive pastel landscape paintings. She is an internationally recognized artist featured in Pastel Journal, a Master Panelist with the Pastel Society of America, and an Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel Societies, among many other accolades. Karen selected 88 works from over 370 submissions from artists across the United States and Europe for this show, reflecting an incredibly high quality and diverse range of subject and style.

Featuring an array of figurative, abstract, portrait, and landscape scenes, this show is a stunning tribute to the medium of pastel. Pastel is made from finely ground

pigments combined with a binder. When applied to a substrate, like paper, light reflects off of the countless particles found in the ground powder, giving rise to a pleasing optical vibrancy.

You may have seen the famous pastel works by artists such as Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and Claude

Monet, who used the innate qualities of the medium to capture fleeting moments and changing light, broadly categorized by the Impressionist movement. You’ll find that this desire to render brevity with quick strokes and a hazy finish is continued in many works by the contemporary artists in our Mile High exhi-

bition. A strong motif is the uniquely beautiful Colorado landscape, with aspen trees and towering natural structures populating much of the imagery.

Others seem to defy the coarse texture typically associated with pastel artworks, like Leslie Trujillo-Batts’s “Intimidation,” which is utterly striking in its precise naturalism and smooth quality. Sliced kiwis settle beneath a ripe dragon fruit in an apparently benign still-life painting.

Upon closer inspection, however, we find a watchful praying mantis lurking in plain sight, appearing to defend the plate of brilliant fruit. In Karen’s words, “this painting stayed with me even when I was no longer looking at it. It kept me coming back to admire the unusual subject and wonderful handling of pastel. I did not however see the surprise at first, and when I did, it made me smile.”

Batts’s piece won Best in Show, and nine other prizes were awarded to artists by The Pastel Society of Colora-

do. The society, established in 1994, is committed to elevating the use of pastels as a medium for fine art and supporting artists who use pastels.

Their dedication is reflected in the care and consideration which brought the Mile High exhibit at the Curtis Center to fruition. Essential legal documents all seniors should have Dear Savvy Senior, What kinds of legal documents do I need to help my family take care of me in my elder years? I would like to get my affairs in order but could use some help.

Dear Approaching, All adults, especially an older adult like yourself, should have at least five legal documents to protect yourself and your family. These documents will make sure your wishes regarding your estate are legal and clear and will help minimize any conflicts and confusion with your family and your health care providers if you become seriously ill or when you die. Here are the key documents you need, along with some tips to help you create them.

Durable Power of Attorney: This document allows you to designate someone you trust to handle your financial affairs if you become incapacitated.

Advance Directive: This includes two documents that spell

out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment. The two documents are a “living will” which tells your doctor what kind of care you want to receive if you become incapacitated.

And a “health care power of attorney” (or health care proxy), which names a person you authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf if you’re unable.

To complement your advance directive, you should also consider getting a Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment – see POLST.org.

This is a state specific form that your doctor would fill out that translates your end-of-life wishes into medical orders to ensure your wishes are carried out.

A Will: This lets you spell out your wishes of how you’d like your property and assets distributed after you die, whether it’s to family, friends or a charity. It also allows you to designate an executor to ensure your wishes are carried out and allows you to name guardians if you have dependent children.

In addition to a will, if you own real estate or have consid-

erable assets, another option you may want to consider is a “revocable living trust.” This functions like a will but allows your estate to avoid the time and expense of probate (the public legal process that examines your estate after you die) and helps ensure your estate’s privacy.

HIPPA Release: This form gives your healthcare provider permission to discuss your medical care and medical bills with those you designate. You may need specific HIPAA release forms for each medical professional or health care establishment you deal with.

Paying college athletes just the latest change That judge’s ruling last week ordering colleges and universities to pay heretofore “student-athletes” (over and above the NIL money they’re already getting) to compete for the schools that are supposedly educating them and preparing them for future employment started me thinking.

I’m sure I’ll hear from friends who remember when things were different and decry amateurism’s end.

But I’ve put together the following “good old days” quiz to make my point that we’ve been heading this way for some time I’ve chosen 1955 as the baseline for my questions, mainly because that’s when I was old enough to remember how it used to be.

Q1: How many major college football bowl games were played after the ’55 season?

Q2: How many teams made up the National Hockey League that year, and which team won the Stanley Cup? Q3: How many teams made up baseball’s major leagues in 1955?

Q4: Who was professional baseball’s first $100,000 bonus baby?

Q5: When was the last game between the College AllStars and the National Football League defending champs played in Chicago? Which team won?

Q6: Can you name the eight teams in the National Basketball Association for the 1955-56 season and where they play today?

I chose these questions to illustrate the profound change sports in America has undergone in the past 70 years. In each instance, note when television entered the picture (so to speak).

A1: Following the 1955 college football season, the bowl

lineup included the Rose, Orange, Cotton, Sugar, Gator and Sun bowls—Six! Five were shown on TV. After the 2024 season concluded, there were forty-six—46—including four in the eight-team College Football Playoff. All were televised.

A2: In 1955 the National Hockey League consisted of six teams, often referred to as the Original Six, though prior to 1942 the NHL had as many as 10 teams. The Original Six are Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, New York and the ’55 Stanley Cup champs, Detroit. The NHL’s 32nd team, the Seattle Kraken, began play in the 2021-22 season.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in major professional sports, but it wasn’t shown on national television until 1953 in Canada and 1966 in the U.S. A3: The National and American Leagues each had eight teams. Now they each have 15.

The trick to this question, if there is one, is either the Baltimore Orioles, who had relocated from St. Louis (where they were the Browns) the season before; or the Dodgers and Giants, who later moved from New York City to Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively. (The 1955 World Series, when Brooklyn beat the Yankees, was the first one televised in color, by NBC.) A4: The Pittsburgh Pirates signed lefthanded pitcher Paul Pettit to a contract with their farm team in New Orleans with a $100,00 bonus in 1950. And that New Orleans part is important.

Between 1947 and the establishment of the amateur draft in 1965 (now televised nationally), any major league team that signed an amateur for a bonus of

$4,000 or more was required to keep that player on its active roster for the next two seasons. By signing Pettit to a minor league contract, Pittsburgh circumvented that rule.

(In case your answer was Mickey Mantle, the Mick was a bargain. Scout Tom Greenwade signed him for a bonus of $1,500.)

A5: The Chicago Charities All-Star Classic, as it became known, came to an end in 1976, mainly the victim of NFL teams’ reluctance to risk their top draft choices being injured in the game. It was televised annually, beginning in 1950. The collegians won in 1955, beating Cleveland 30-27.

A6: The champs in ’54-55, the Philadelphia Warriors, are now the Golden State Warrior.

The Fort Wayne Pistons are now in Detroit; the St. Louis Hawks in Atlanta; and the Minneapolis Lakers in Los Angeles.

The Syracuse Nationals have become the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Rochester Royals are the Sacramento Kinds (by way of Cincinnati and Kansas City).

Only the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics remain where they began.

I hope you’ve noticed a trend or two in all of this.

The 43-acre site will feature a proposed 12,000-seat temporary stadium and an approximately 20,000-square-foot training facility purpose-built for professional women’s sports.

“We’re just getting started, but breaking ground today on the performance center is a huge step,” said Rob Cohen, controlling owner of Denver NWSL. “We’re building something our athletes can be proud of, and we couldn’t do it without the incredible support of the City of Centennial and Cherry Creek Schools.”

And that can be a smart way of thinking. “If you live in a high-tax state and are considering relocating in retirement, it could make financial sense to move to one that would reduce your tax liability,” says Vinay Navani, CPA and shareholder at WilkinGutenplan.

A lot of people looking to reduce their month-to-month retirement expenses gravitate toward states without an individual income tax.

Currently, seven states belong in that category: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. Two more states — Washington and New Hampshire — do not tax personal wages. However, Washington has a capital gains tax for capital gains over $250,000 from the sales of stocks, bonds and certain other capital assets and New Hampshire taxes interest and dividend income in excess of personal exemptions.

“Of course, there are plenty of other reasons for people nearing retirement to explore relocating,” says Ben Storey, director, Retirement Research & Insights at Bank of America. “You may want to move closer to family or live in a warmer climate, for instance.

But the financial implications of your choice should play a large role as you begin to plan your retirement budget.”

Before you start scanning the real estate listings for Fairbanks, Alaska, or Fort Worth, Texas, here are some tax-related factors you might want to think about.

You get less relief from high state taxes than you once did.

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act capped allowable state and local tax deductions, including property tax, at $10,000 (for individuals and married couples, filing jointly). “As a result, people who live in states with high taxes, such as New Jersey, New York or California, may no longer be able to deduct all of their state taxes paid on their federal return,” Navani says.

Because of that, some are finding that they owe more in federal income tax.

Your cost of living could be higher in a low-tax state. “You cannot look at relocating in a tax vacuum,” Navani says. Look at the overall prices in the area where you are considering relocating — everything from utilities and groceries to healthcare costs and your car and homeowners insurance.

Low-tax states can make up for lost revenue in other ways that could impact your budget.

Several of the states without an individual income tax compensate by implementing a higher state sales tax or other taxes, including taxes on necessities such as gasoline, or charging more for state services such as driver’s licenses or car registrations. Those hidden costs could have a real impact on your budget.

Local property taxes also vary widely — even within a state — and a state with low (or even no) income taxes may have pockets where homeowners are hit with relatively high property taxes.

“One way to get a clearer idea of the tax implications of relocating is to ask your tax professional to run a projection of what your tax picture might look like in the new location,” Navani suggests.

A new state might treat your retirement income differently.

Above certain adjusted gross income levels (plus certain modifications), you could owe federal income taxes on a portion of your Social Security benefits. But at the state level, the rules vary, with some states matching the federal approach and others exempting Social Security benefits from state income taxes (often pegged to your total income).

Another potential tax issue to explore is how your new state might treat your pension payments for income tax purposes. Among states that collect income taxes, some states may exclude all or a portion of qualifying pension income from state taxes.

Your home state should play into your estate planning. Looking ahead to how your beneficiaries will fare, you may want to compare estate or inheritance taxes in your current and future home states. Most states do not impose these taxes, but in those that do, state taxes may kick in well before federal estate taxes will.

“In addition to talking to a tax expert, be sure to consult your financial advisor about the impact that relocating could have on your retirement strategy, as well as your bigger financial picture,” Storey adds. “Speaking with an advisor can help give you a sense of how your expenses and income could shape your lifestyle if you decide to move.”

One of the best-selling SUVs in America, this has three seating rows, is turbo charged, and a real pleasure to drive. While a larger vehicle in size, it is nimble and fast with a 2.4L turbo-charged engine and an eight-speed variable transmission. Gas mileage averages 21 mpg not up to the cross-over vehicle mileage, but I still prefer gas engines over the all-electric models.

The ride is very comfortable with full-time all-wheel drive and adaptive variable suspension. The 4-Runner rides on 20” alloy wheels with all-around LED lighting and fog lights. The outside mirrors folds in and the center rearview mirror is a
