Amanda Hardin has a fascinating background including registered nurse, certified firearms instructor and Second Amendment educator. Being on a reality TV show inspired her founding of Mind & Safety Institute, a nonprofit education and training organization focused on mental health, public safety, and risk-informed decision making. “Awareness can prevent crimes,” she said. “This is not a political issue.” In addition to having a firearm (note use of firearm rather than gun) safety plan, she suggested other simple defense devices, tools and deterrents: keys, flashlight, conceal carry bag could hold pepper spray and body armor – little things you can do in your life plus educate others. She wants to teach clinicians and normalize the firearms conversation. 44% own firearms that we know of and less than 1% die of mass shootings by firearms. Israel’s 78th birthday is coming up. Greenwood Village City Council member

Jay Schneiderman spent a decade in Israel before returning to Greenwood Village and gave his personal perspective on the conflict with Iran. In his college freshman year, he felt he was being called to serve the Israeli Army.

His parents said they would support that if he finished his degree. At age 23, he was trying to get in the military and was successful although most were younger (18) since serving is mandatory in Israel. He finished his service (Special Forces) in 2015, stayed to earn his Masters at University of Jerusalem and met his future wife. They returned to America. But, because of the October 7, 2023 Hamas militants surprise, massive attack and massacre, he felt compelled to return and join his old unit until early 2024.

“War fatigue doesn’t exist in Israel since most citizens are veterans anyway,” he said.

“Morale is still high after 2 1/2 years. Media in Israel has a huge affect. They are not complacent about sirens and take closest shelter. They rally together to see it through to the end with the sense of Iran’s nuclear capabilities would annihilate Israel.”

Belonging is Essential There is a mental health crisis in the nation, and it is destroying the fabric of our culture. To be mentally well and grow in health, happiness, resilience, and self-governance, we need to belong. According to Dr. Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, the need for belonging is essential. Humans are hardwired to connect. The primary sense of belonging is within a family, where attachment and bonding are fostered as needs are met. When children are nurtured and cared for, trust in their worth, value, place in the world, belonging accelerates, and brain architecture develops. When toxic stress, neglect, abuse, and chaos surround a child, belonging and brain architecture suffer, often resulting in antisocial behaviors and rage. Numerous studies have concluded that for school shooters and those who commit violent crimes, the common denominator among these troubled individuals is isolation, loneliness, and absent fathers. Drug use, family breakdown, toxic stress, neglect, isolation, depression, adverse childhood experiences, lack of educational achievement, lack of monitoring, and loneliness appear to be at the root of these extreme antisocial behaviors.

The opposite of loneliness is belonging. We must know that we matter and belong to our families, friends, classmates, colleagues, communities, churches, synagogues, mosques, teams, culture, and country. Belonging is primal and fundamental to our happiness, mental health, and well-being. A lack of belonging is a psychological lever and a trigger with broad social consequences. Feeling alone in the world is a dangerous place to be, mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, financially, and behaviorally. Aloneness and a lack of belonging wreak havoc on all of us.

Belonging is not only the feeling of connectedness to a group or community. It is knowing that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Feeling attached, close, and thoroughly accepted is part of the belonging matrix. Belonging is also about embracing a set of shared beliefs or ideals. To truly feel a sense of belonging, we must feel unity and a common sense of character

with and among members of our group. Being surrounded by others doesn’t guarantee a sense of belonging.

Belonging has to do with identification as a member of a group and the high-quality, affirming, and supportive interactions that result.

Since belonging is so important to mental health, happiness, and human flourishing, we must work together and be intentional about meeting this primal need from birth. As a nation, we must embrace family for-

mation and committed love (commonly known as marriage). When couples marry, they publicly celebrate their commitment to belonging to each other. Having children should be coupled with this pronouncement of belonging.

Currently, 46% of children born in the US are outside this belonging paradigm. We must support families and children and teach dads how to be involved with their children, modeling healthy pro-social behaviors such as self-regulation, character, support, and kindness. We must monitor screen time and the sites children and adolescents have access to. We must eat together and talk. We must create belonging and connection for all to increase public safety, mental health, and human flourishing. joneen@narme.org.

This is an element of human nature hard-wired into us at creation.

The greediest person is the one who uses government power to take freedom from citizens through regulation, embezzlement and taxation.

The demise of Colorado was ordained when the Leftists in the Democrat party took control 20 years ago and the Republican party could not mount a cohesive counter.‌ Republicans, at least in Colorado, could not conceive nor unite on one principle: That the individual is sacred, that the individual’s freedom must be, at all times, protected from a too invasive government, that excels in taxing, issueing fees and implementing regulations.

If the individual is sacred, then his freedom is sacrosanct too.

There is no freedom in excess taxation or intrusive regulations.

How much better are this season’s Rockies?

Through the end of April, the first full month of the 2026 major league baseball season, the Colorado Rockies were four games under .500 at 14-18, a winning percentage of .438.

At the end of April in 2025, they were 5-25, a winning percentage of .167. And they had lost 57 by the time they recorded their 14th victory. That came on June 15.

It’s obvious that the 2026 edition of the Rockies—Paul DePodesta’s first as President of Baseball Operations—has begun the climb, as he refers to the turnaround he’s engineering.

But with five months of this season to go, the big question is how much better is this team than its immediate predecessor? (I know, the month of May started poorly.)

Let’s take a look, using the nine “IFs” from my March 19 Villager column the week before the opener in Miami, as one of the measuring sticks. * * * First, some positive (or at least hopeful) trends: IF . . . Mickey Moniak continues to increase his offensive production and IF . . . the Rockies finish in the top 10 ML teams in stolen bases ...

Through the first one-fifth of the season, Moniak was second on the team with eight homers and led the club in runs batted in with 17 and in batting average at.315.

He appears to be realizing the potential that mad him the first player taken overall in the 2016 Major League Draft. And the “Runnin’ Rockies” ranked eight in MLB with 28 stolen bases in 40 tries (6th most).

IF . . . Someone—T.J. Rumfield, Troy Johnston, Blaine Crim, Eduard Julien or ___?___ becomes the regular first baseman and consistently hits higher than eighth in the batting order . . .

Johnston was two points behind Moniak for the club hitting lead after April 30’s game—a pleasant surprise—and leads all of his teammates in enthusiasm.

But he’s a better outfielder/ designated hitter than first baseman, and no Gold Glover anywhere.

Rumfield, meanwhile, was tied with Johnston for second on the team in RBIs with 16 and is a much better fielder.

IF . . . Hunter Goodman can at least match last season ...

Last season’s Silver Slugger at catcher was a .257 hitter through 32 games this season (compared to .287 for all of last season) but had already hit nine home runs— almost a third of last year’s total. He needs to cut down on the Ks. IF . . . Kyle Karros takes charge at third base . . .

The son of the Dodgers’ long-time first baseman Eric Karros is a Gold Glove-caliber third baseman in his first major league season. And while he managed only a .207 batting average through April, the quality of his at bats and his .330 on base percentage are promising signs that he can become a decent hitter, too. * * * Four other IFs aren’t so encouraging at this point: IF . . . Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle both return to their 2024 form . . .

As of the end of April, Tovar was hitting .202 and Doyle .214, and they had driven in only 11 runs between them. They continue to excel on defense, but on May 1, their offensive accomplishments of 2024 seemed a distant memory.

IF . . . Kyle Freeland posts only the second winning season of his career . . .

It’s early but he doesn’t look like an ace, much less a winner, to me.

IF . . . The three veteran starters added to the rotation—Michael Lorenzen, Jose Quintana and Tomoyuki Sugano— average 25 starts apiece . . .

Decorated Japanese righthander Sugano looks like manager Warren Schaefer’s most reliable starter (31, 2.84 earned run average in six starts) and seems certain to reach 25 starts and double-figure wins. But he could be traded to a contender at the deadline. Too early to say on Lorenzen and Quintana, but the early returns raise questions (5.68 ERA for 52 1/3 innings over 11 starts between them).

IF . . . Jordan Beck takes a big step forward in his development . . .

The early season’s biggest disappointment, Beck was batting .161 when April ended. * * * Despite that sweep by the Braves, I’m sticking with my preseason prediction of 70 wins. ________________ Denny Dressman writes a weekly sports column for The Villager. Centennial is looking forward to its next 25 years

s she looked at the crowd of 300 elected officials, residents, and community leaders who came to Wings Over the Rockies at Centennial Airport on April 30 to hear about the State of the City of Centennial, new Mayor Christine Sweetland began her address by going back 25 years to the formation of this young city.

She said, “Back in 2000, residents came together with a bold Centennial City Manager Matt idea: they wanted greater local Sturgeon and Littleton City Council control over their community. When a longtime resident of western GV challenged Clifford, asking, “Why should the people of Greenwood Village sacrifice their quality of life for what is a Denver issue?” Clifford responded by asking, “What housing policy of the state has resulted in a change that in any way lessened your quality of life in Greenwood Village?”

The resident said, “At this time, I am unable to answer the question because I haven’t done a lot of research in that area.”

Clifford took a moment to offer words of praise to the City of Greenwood Village for “doing something better than some other communities,” noting, “If you look at shopping centers in GV, the general landscape, and residential areas, everything looks good,” compared to “shopping centers in Centennial that I get major complaints about,” due to poor appearance, despite being fully leased.”

In addition to local residents who came to hear what Rep. Clifford had to say, Arapahoe County Assessor P.K. Kaiser attended the town hall, along with Greenwood Village City Council Member Bob Doyle and Centennial City Council Member Ryan Dwiggins.

Denver South commuter survey shows few changes in patterns

The days of the week when employees must be at their office locations, from most to least required, were Wednesday (92%), Thursday, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday (49%).

The most stubborn statistic DS found in its survey is that employees still don’t use public transit for their commute. During 2025, 71% of respondents reported they drove their cars to work alone, with 94% naming having a parking space as the most important benefit at their workplace, surpassing a flexible work schedule. Only 2% of survey respondents said they use buses or light rail to get to and from work.

After wrestling with the usual questions about home rule, housing, and construction defects posed by constituents at a town hall meeting at Greenwood Village City Hall on May 1, State Rep. Chad Clifford (D-37), now in his third year on the job, told constituents that he is “excited to experience how a new administration (in the governor’s office) approaches policy in the Capitol.”

On the topic of home rule, a lawsuit was filed in Denver District Court on May 19, 2025 by six home-rule front range cities, led

by Greenwood Village, challenging the constitutionality of several related statutes passed in 2024, but primarily HB24-1313 Housing in Transit-Oriented Communities, a bill which came from Gov. Polis and was crafted by a committee of experts he assembled. It contained significant goals, processes, and rules designed to increase the supply of housing in Colorado. It also became a lightning rod for many cities, including GV, who believe that it usurps their constitutional home rule authority, specifically in the area of land use. Although the bill was supported by the majority of Democrats in the general assembly, Clifford was not among them.

eight years is how employees get to and from work. The latest Denver South Commuter Survey, released April 28, looked at return-to-office policies, as well as transportation methods.

DS found that the number of days per week employees worked remotely decreased from 3.06 in 2021, during the height of the pandemic, to 1.13 in 2025, with 85% of respondents reporting they are required to be in the office at least three days per week, and 25% reporting they are required to report

ederal Judge Philip A. Brimmer said no to current leadership of the state GOP, who sought to exclude unaffiliated voters from the June 30 statewide Republican primary, thus unaffiliated voters will be sent Republican (and Democratic) ballots for the June 30 statewide primary election.

In his ruling, Brimmer sided with Colorado’s four sitting Republican Members of Congress and the Republican National Congressional Committee, who said that that the change to state law passed by the voters in 2016, allowing those not affiliated with either major party to cast ballots in either the Democratic or Republican primary (but not both), must stand for this election because changing the process at this late date would be too confusing. Secretary of State Jena Griswold issued a statement after the ruling, pointing out that “This decisive ruling ensures that the Colorado June primary aligns with Colorado law.” Watch for the state GOP to act soon to try to change the rule before the next election, based on Brimmer’s ruling in March that the current method in place to exclude

unaffiliated voters is so steep that it is unconstitutional. _____________________________

B26-135 State Public K-12 Education Funding, still being considered by the general assembly, would ask Colorado voters to allow the state to retain revenue above the TABOR cap to increase K-12 public education funding by up to 2% annually for the next ten years. Proponents, led by State Sen. Jeff Bridges, say the additional funds will be used to increase teacher pay, decrease class size, and improve student retention. Funds that would be generated by this measure are estimated at $200 million per year.

These monies would otherwise be used for TABOR refunds. State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, opposed to the measure, said, “This is about writing a blank check so that state government can do everything that they ever thought that they ever wanted to do at any point and spend as much money as they can.” Kirkmeyer is running for the GOP nomination for governor in the June 30 primary. Bridges is
