The Magical, Eternal, Earthy Dance Recently, we visited Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to watch our grandson play in a college baseball tournament.

We were reminded of the eternal, earthly dance of Spring.

There is a quiet, almost sacred moment when winter loosens its grip, and the earth exhales.

You feel it before you see it.

The air softens, and the sun lingers a little longer. In this college field, the sharp crack of the baseball bat breaks the silence like a promise: Spring has returned.

Baseball does not just arrive with Spring; it announces it. It is the drumbeat of renewal, the rhythm of thawing ground and flowers greeting the sun. After months of cold and leafless trees, the sight of a freshly chalked baseline cutting through emerald grass feels almost miraculous. It feels like hope is made visible.

Watching him pitch with the intensity that silences the crowd, I looked around, taking in the meticulously manicured field, the dedicated parents, the coolers, the sports chairs, the youth, the excitement, and the players’ awesome focus.

I am reminded of a particular Spring when this truth settled deep in my bones. It had been a long winter, one of those seasons that seemed to press down not only on the land but also on my soul.

Life had its share of burdens, and the cold felt personal, as if it had taken up residence inside me. But one afternoon, I wandered past a local park where a group of kids had gathered for their first baseball game of the season. Their excitement and intensity were palpable.

It was like Springtime came alive.

Baseball, like Spring, is not about perfection. It is about beginnings. It is about showing up with newfound positivity, daring to believe something beautiful is about to happen. Every pitch is a new chance. Every inning is a reset. Even the greatest players fail more often than they succeed, yet they step up to the plate again, refusing to let the past define the next swing.

As I stood there watching, I realized that the changing

of seasons is not just an external event; it is an internal invitation. The earth does not cling to winter. It releases it. It trusts the process of renewal. And baseball mirrors that trust. It teaches us that life moves forward in cycles, that endings are never final, and that beneath the frozen surface, life and hope are always preparing to rise again.

The beauty of new life is not loud or boastful. It is subtle. It is found in the way the grass pushes through the

soil, in the laughter of children chasing a fly ball, and in the simple joy of being outside after months of confinement. It is found in the courage to begin again.

Watching our grandson pitch and hearing the crack of the bat this family weekend, I listened closely. It was more than a sound. It is a declaration. It is a reminder that no matter how long or harsh the winter, life endures. Hope returns.

Seward’s Folly and Colorado’s Golden Beginning

Meanwhile, on the national stage, another bold decision was unfolding.

In 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. Critics derided the move as “Seward’s Folly,” believing the land to be a frozen wasteland.

But, much like the early skepticism surrounding Colorado’s mining towns—including the hard realities faced in both Central City and Black Hawk—time proved the critics wrong.

Alaska would become rich in natural resources and strategic importance, just as Colorado’s gold fields helped fuel growth and settlement throughout the West.

Colorado achieved statehood in 1876, earning its place as the Centennial State—a product of vision, perseverance and the willingness to take risks.

As we reflect on these milestones—America at 250 years and Colorado at 150—we are reminded that history often rewards those willing to see opportunity where others see uncertainty.

From Jefferson’s expansion, to the gold discoveries in Central City and Black Hawk, to Seward’s purchase of Alaska, the story is the same: bold decisions, questioned at the time, often become the foundations of lasting success.

And here in Colorado, that spirit still runs deep.

120 County employees to volunteer across 11 nonprofits during inaugural Days of Service Week, April 16-23 To further support local communities, Arapahoe County is hosting its inaugural Days of Service week, April 16 – 23, partnering with area nonprofits in furtherance of their work.

“April is National Volunteer Month and National County Government Month, so it’s the perfect opportunity to support nonprofits across the County,” said Commissioner and Chair Leslie Summey.

“Our employees are deeply rooted in this community — many of them live in the neighborhoods we serve,” said Summey. “Days of Service is a chance to roll up our sleeves alongside the nonprofits doing vital work every day.

Whether it's delivering meals, cleaning up a river, or stocking a food pantry, we want to show up in ways that matter.”

Move over Larry Brown; Malone’s a Tar Heel now Michael Malone now has the opportunity to do what only one other coach—who also happens to be a former Denver Nuggets head coach—has accomplished in basketball history.

Being named head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels last week means Malone will have a shot at adding an NCAA title to the NBA crown he won with the Nuggets in 2023.

Only North Carolina alum Larry Brown, who coached Denver from 1974 into 1979, has won both (with the University of Kansas in 1988 and the Detroit Pistons in 2004).

“I’ve asked our staff to start moving those banners so that we can hang another,” outgoing Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said to Malone during his introductory news conference. As Cunningham spoke, he gestured to the six national championship banners that hang in the Smith Center, named for late Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith.

“I don’t want to put any pressure on you, but they’re starting to move them tomorrow.”

Under Smith, Frank McGuire before him and Roy Williams after, the Tar Heels not only won those six titles but also were runners-up six other times. They’ve made a record 21 Final Four appearances. (Only UCLA (10) and Kentucky (8) have won more titles.)

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Malone told an audience that included Williams, a three-time champion, and UNC head football coach Bill Belichick, winner of six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots.

“But what I kept thinking about was, I had a chance to be a part of something special—the history and tradition.”

Malone, however, is not taking over the program that any of those coaching giants knew, which is precisely why he might succeed.

Between NIL money by the boatload, a transfer portal that puts professional free agency to shame, and oneand-done phenoms who can’t wait to play in the NBA, today’s college game is closer to pro than anything McGuire, Smith or Williams ever imagined.

“I think a lot of NBA coaches understand what it means to coach somebody that’s making money,” said Malone’s successor in Denver, David Adelman.

“It’s more of a professional environment now. I think you’re going to see more pro coaches of coach Malone’s caliber looking at jobs like that.”

That’s not Malone’s only asset in his new job., though Fifteen percent of the players

in this year’s just-completed March Madness—264— were international recruits. In all, about 500 foreign-born players occupied roster spots in Division One in the ’25-’26 season.

It won’t be lost on any international recruit that Malone helped the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic—a second-round draft choice from Serbia—become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

And it won’t hurt a bit that Malone has the big Serb’s endorsement.

“I’m happy for him,” Jokic said upon hearing the news. “I think he’s going to do a really good job because he can actually have time to coach the guys and teach them how to play the game the right way.”

Malone was named head coach of the Nuggets on June 15, 2015 and fired on April 28, 2025.

In between, his Denver teams won 471 games, including three seasons of more than 50 wins, made the playoffs six times, and won the NBA championship in 2023.

He came to the Mile High City with the reputation as a defense-minded coach but established himself as an innovative offensive mind by developing Jokic and building a dynamic

attack around him.

“Michael has proven he knows how to build strong, successful teams that can consistently compete in the postseason and win championships,” said Cunningham, “and he knows how to make everyone on the floor better.

“He understands how to build rosters and coach NBA players, which is exactly what our Tar Heels want to be.”

Malone has displayed a coaching intensity that, in the eyes of many college observers, rivals Connecticut’s mercurial Bob Hurley. He’s been described as demanding, loud, fiery, sometimes stubborn, and “old-school.”

How that plays at North Carolina is one of the big questions about his selection.

Malone’s hiring has been called “out-of-the-box,” a “surprise,” and a move of necessity so that UNC had a head coach in place before the opening of the transfer portal. It’s also been pointed out that he last coached at the college level—as an assistant at Manhattan—more than 25 years ago. And that college basketball games are two halves instead of four quarters.

Some have suggested he was chosen only after the likes of Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, Michigan’s Dusty May and Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan, who won two national championships in 19 years at Florida.

And it’s been noted that hiring him spared North Carolina the expense of covering some coveted current college coach’s contractual buyout, which these days runs into the many millions.

But none of that is the spin coming from Chapel Hill. UNC wanted him enough to sign Malone to a six-year, $50-million contract that, while not as lucrative as his last couple of Nuggets deals, makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the college game.

“Michael was the first coach we engaged with as part of the search process because of his reputation as a selfless teacher and innovator who brings an incredible ability to connect with players and get the absolute best out of those he mentors,” said Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark, who will succeed Cunningham as Carolina’s Director of Athletics on July 1.

“He is a brilliant coach who will deliver a modern and disciplined approach to leading our men’s basketball program, which is critical in the current landscape of college athletics.” ________________ Denny Dressman writes a weekly sports column for The Villager. Denver Holocaust Remembrance event

D

enver will once again participate in the nationwide commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust and their families at the Denver Holocaust Remembrance event on Sunday, April 19th at Babi Yar Park, 10451 E Yale Ave in Denver, from 2-4 p.m. This event coincides with the annual observance of the Holocaust, established by Congress, and led by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., as well as Israel’s Yom HaShoah Remembrance day on April 14th, 2026. It is sponsored by the non-profit, Remember 6, an entity that uses educational and informational programs to combat the disturbing rise in Antisemitism and Holocaust denial.

Opening invocation will be given by Father Phil Eberhart, Pastor of Resurrection Anglican Fellowship in Greenwood Village. Father Phil and his Church are bold in their stance against the current rise of Antisemitism.

The Denver Mayor, Michael Johnston’s Proclamation, in memory of the Holocaust, will be read by the Retired Colonel of the US Air-Force, Dr. David Murphy, a command pilot with over 2,300 flying hours including 274 in combat, and served as an F-16 flight lead, instructor pilot, and flight examiner. He is currently the Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences, as well as the College of Adult and Graduate Studies at Colorado Christian University.

Attendees of the Denver Holocaust Remembrance Event will have the privileged of hearing from Holocaust Survivor, Barbara Steinmetz who was born in Hungary in 1936. Her parents ran a flourishing hotel on an island off the coast of Croatia, providing her and her older sister an idyllic childhood. That all changed in the summer of 1938, when Jews across Europe saw a grave threat in the rise of the Nazi party and began making plans to leave their homelands to escape Hitler’s grasp.

Barbara’s family left Hungary in 1940, settling in Nice, France, but Hitler’s threat followed them, forcing them to flee again by train to Barcelona, then Madrid and finally to Lisbon, Portugal.

Barbara’s father sought for asylum in 12 different countries but the only one accepting Jewish refugees was the Dominican Republic who would use them for hard labor. Barbara’s family eventually made it to the United States, when Barbara was 9. Her parents took on menial jobs and moved from state to state to find better pay and more affordable living. The moving around was necessary for survival but it meant Barbara couldn’t developed roots, nor establish lasting friendships. This changed after Barbara married Howard Steinmetz, moved to Saginaw, Mich-

igan, had 3 beautiful daughters and settled for 50 years! Barbara and Howard moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2005 where they lived together until his passing in 2010. Then on June 1st, 2025 much to the shock of the community in Boulder, a deadly attack on Jews occurred. It took place during the Run For Their Lives gathering that advocated for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Mohamed Sabry Soliman threw Molotov Cocktails into the crowd, injuring 15 people including Barbara and her daughter, Julie Shaffer. Another Holocaust Survivor, Karen Diamond, succumbed to her injuries and passed away nearly four weeks after the assault.

Because of this incident, and the continued rise in Antisemitism, Barbara is diligent about sharing her story at schools, churches, and community events emphasizing that “Silence is the enemy.”

Hannah Sperber will also be speaking. She was the daughter of a Nazi Officer who later became a Jewish Matriarch.

She was born in Germany in 1936 and experienced a turbulent childhood. Her father was an active member of the Nazi party and Hannah describes him as very cruel. Though she didn’t know anything about the Holocaust and certainly not her fathers involvement, Hannah recalls seeing slow-moving freight trains with people in them and she wondered about these people and was told that they were prisoners of war. “That’s all I knew,” she says. Even after the war Hannah remained unaware of the Holocaust or of Germany’s role in it until she met Henry Sperber in 1954. Henry was a Holocaust Survivor whose family posed as non-Jews during the war.

Henry’s father, who spoke fluent German, even repaired military vehicles for the German army but the SS found out he was Jewish and attempted to arrest him. Henry’s father resisted the arrest, was beaten unconscious and died of his injuries. Henry’s mother was taken to Auschwitz and his two younger siblings tried to flee but were caught and murdered. Henry escaped but was left all alone at age 10 until kind strangers from Poland took him in until the war was over.

His mother survived Auschwitz and they reunited. She remarried in 1949 and this new family moved to Detroit, MI. In 1953, Henry enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany, where he met Hannah. Hearing Henry’s story was the first time Hannah heard about the Holocaust. “I was just shocked,” she says. “I felt so guilty.” It wasn’t long before Hannah found herself drawn to Judaism and she remembers the first time she entered a Synagogue, she felt so comfortable, so at home, giving her great comfort and joy which she desperately needed. Hannah and

Henry eventually married and built a life together, first in Detroit and then in Denver, during which Hannah found great security and purpose through Judaism, family and community.”

“In addition to those sharing their stories, there will be a panel of Holocaust Survivors who will speak about the rise of Antisemitism in our day, how it is affecting them and what they think should be done about it.

This panel will include: David Zapilar, who was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1932.

When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, the Zapiler Family fled to Russia, taking refuge on a Russian farm with 18 other Jews who were attempting to escape the Nazis. Eventually the Russians transported the Zapiler family to a slave camp in Siberia where David’s parents endured hard labor.

Asher Ben Basat, who was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1940. In 1941, Bulgaria made an alliance with Hitler’s Germany so Asher’s earliest recollections of life was of constant dread and fear of deprivation. In March 1943, the entire Jewish Community of Plovdiv, including Asher’s family were sent to the train station. After a long period of waiting, they were released to go home. Asher learned years later, that that train was on its way to the extermination camp in Treblinka. His family was spared for

unknown reasons and to this day, that memory haunts him.

Oscar “Osi” Sladek, who was born in 1935 in Prešov, Czechoslovakia. By the time he was seven, Osi was forced to wear a Yellow Star of David, was bullied and beaten by his classmates, and labeled a “dirty little Jew”. “That is where my personal Holocaust started” Osi states. In 1944 most Jews in Prešov had been deported to concentration camps, so Osi’s family was forced to flee into the Tatra mountains, facing great challenges just trying to survive the winter. Osi has documented this great trial in a book called “Escape to the Tartas: a Boy, a War and a Life Interrupted.”

the original founders of the park to bring improvements through signage that will highlight the memorial structures throughout the park, including the sidewalk system which is configured as the Star of David and a natural ravine at the western edge of the park that is reminiscent of the location where victims were buried in Kiev. This ravine is crossed by a narrow bridge with high, black wooden walls, which evoke the train cars used by the Nazis to transport prisoners. Many participants at last years event were not aware of these memorial structures and proceeded to explore the entire park in order to grasp its true essence. Signage will inspire every Babi Yar Park visitor to experience the same.

The GOP state assembly in Pueblo brings a few surprises Governor

T

he big news out of the Republican State Assembly held in Pueblo on April 11 is that the contest for the GOP nomination for Colorado governor in November has been whittled down from 19 candidates to three.

Candidates can earn a spot on the June 30 primary ballot by submitting sufficient valid signatures of party members on petitions to the Secretary of State, by getting at least 30% of the votes of the delegates at the state assembly, or by submitting sufficient signatures and getting at least 10% of the votes of the delegates at the state assembly.

As we reported previously, Republicans State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer and military veteran Victor Marx, who describes himself as a “high-risk missionary” with no political experience, have submitted petitions to the Secretary of State and are awaiting confirmation of sufficiency.

Marx has vowed to release former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, convicted of multiple crimes related to misuse of her former office, from prison “on day one,” if elected. The Colorado Appeals Court recently ruled that the nine-year sentence she received for her offenses was excessive. Peters entered prison 18 months ago.

Kirkmeyer expects to gain a spot on the primary ballot via her petitions. Marx, in addition to submitting petitions, also sought support at the GOP State Assembly on April 11, where he told delegates he didn’t “stand before you as a savior.” He attracted the votes of 39% of the delegates, assuring his spot in the primary.

The only other GOP candidate for governor who got enough support at the assembly to appear on the primary ballot was State Rep. Scott Bottoms, a pastor known as one of the most conservative members of the general assembly, who claimed two months ago that, “Pedophilia runs through our House, our Senate, and our Governor’s Office, and we know who the people are…(but) I don’t trust the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, State Police, or FBI inside the State of

Colorado.” Bottoms bested Marx with 45% of delegates’ votes, so he will appear on the top line of the June 30 GOP primary ballot, followed by Marx and Kirkmeyer.

None of the other Republicans who sought the nomination for the primary ballot, including Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, reached the 30% threshold for ballot access.

U.S. Senate

In the race for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, only State Sen. Mark Baisley achieved the delegate support necessary to ascend to the primary ballot. Baisley got 46% of all votes cast.

Other announced candidates for the nomination, retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel George Washington Markert V, former state Rep. Janak Joshi, and Montrose County Commissioner Sean Pond all failed to attract the required 30% support of delegates to move on in the process, so there won’t be a GOP primary for U.S. Senate. Baisley will face the winner of the Democratic primary between incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper and his primary opponent, State Sen. Julie Gonzales, in the November 3 general election.

U.S. Congress

Incumbent GOP Members of Congress, Lauren Boebert (Congressional District 4), Jeff Crank (Congressional District 5), and Gabe Evans (Congressional District 8) have not drawn any primary challengers, so each will defend their seats in the general election in November.

In Congressional District 3, one-term incumbent GOP U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd, who replaced U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert after she moved to the eastern plains and was elected to represent Congressional District 4, is facing an unexpected challenge from former State House Rep. Ron Hanks in the June 30 Republican primary.

Hanks challenged Hurd unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2024, as well.

Speaking to Colorado Politics, Hanks said that district delegates are “furious” at Hurd’s record, which he said was opposed to President

primary for Congressional District 3. Either Hurd or Hanks will face the winner of that contest on November 3.

The only other primary contest in the GOP for a Colorado congressional seat will be in CD2, where business owner and activist Kelley Dennison and life success coach Christina Blunt will compete on June 30 for the right to take on incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, running for his fifth term, in November.

Two Republicans will be on the June 30 primary ballot in the race to be the party’s nominee for Colorado Attorney General. Michael Allen, 4th Judicial District Attorney, got 64% of the delegates’ support at the GOP State Assembly on April 11. David Willson, a 20-year military veteran and former cyber security consultant whose platform includes election integrity and fighting tyranny and the woke agenda, received 36% of the votes, surpassing the 30% threshold required to ascend to the primary ballot.

Trump, even though Trump has endorsed Hurd (after first endorsing his former primary opponent Hope Scheppelman, until she withdrew from the race. Scheppelman was vice chair of the state GOP party when Dave Williams was chair).

Hurd submitted petitions on March 16 and is awaiting confirmation of sufficiency.

Since he expects to get on the

ballot via the petition process, Hurd did not compete at the state assembly, leaving that option wide open for challengers. Hanks was the only person to take the leap.

When the contest began, there were four candidates seeking the GOP nomination for Secretary of State. When delegates’ votes were counted, James Wiley, a former Libertarian, was the only one who attracted the required delegate support at the GOP State Assembly on April 11, receiving 70% of the votes cast. Since he has no competition in the primary, Wiley will ascend directly to the general election ballot in November.

In a statement made after the votes were counted, Wiley also invoked the imprisoned former Mesa County Clerk, who has become a cause célèbre in the GOP, telling assembly delegates, “I’ll accept the nomination for secretary of state, but I will be honest, I wish I didn’t have to. Tina Peters should be the one up here today now, accepting that nomination. Instead, she’s seven miles away imprisoned in La Vista Correctional Facility.”

State Treasurer

Former State Senator Kevin Grantham, currently a Fremont County Commissioner, was the only candidate for the GOP nomination for State Treasurer, so he, too, will automatically ascend to the general election ballot.

D

emocratic delegates to their party’s 2026 State Assembly met on March 28 at Pueblo Memorial Hall in Pueblo, where they heard speeches from those seeking their support in the June 30 primary, then voted for their preferred candidates.

In Colorado, candidates get on the primary ballot through petition, state assembly, or a combination of both.

To get on the primary ballot by petition, candidates must get a number specified in state law of valid signatures on petitions from party members in their district.

To get on the primary ballot via the assembly process, candidates must receive at least 30% of the votes at the state assembly.

Candidates who submit a sufficient number of valid signatures on petitions, but choose to also run at the state assembly, must receive at least 10% of the votes at the assembly, or they lose the right to run in the party primary, despite having sufficient petition signatures.

Current Governor Jared Polis, Attorney General Phil Weiser, Secretary of State Jena Griswold, and State Treasurer Dave Young are all at the end of their second consecutive four-year term in those positions and are, therefore, ineligible to run for them again.

Governor

In the 2026 race for governor, Democrats Michael Bennet, currently a U.S. Senator, and Attorney General Phil Weiser will appear on the Democratic primary ballot on June 30. Bennet earned the right solely utilizing the petition process. Weiser ran in the state assembly, where he received the votes of more than 90% of the delegates.

In a statement issued after the vote, Weiser said, “The choice in the governor’s race is crystal clear: Michael Bennet is the candidate of Washington, and I’m the candidate of Colorado. I’m not backed by out-of-state billionaires – I’m powered by the people of Colorado, and as governor, I’ll show up and fight for all Coloradans each and every day.”

In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper will face state Sen. Julie Gonzales in

We know there will be competitive primaries in Congressional Districts one, three, five, and eight.

The incumbents in Congressional Districts two, six and seven—Joe Neguse (CD2), Jason Crow (CD6), and Brittany Petterson (CD7) have no challengers in their party.

In CD1, 15-term Member of Congress Diana DeGette will face at least one challenger in Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros, in the June 30 primary. Kiron, a 28-yearold attorney, got 157 votes, compared to DeGette’s 79 at the state assembly, earning Kiros the top line on the ballot. Also seeking a spot in the primary via the petition process is CU Regent Wanda James. Her petitions are still

Secretary of State Jena Griswold and attorney David Seligman, currently the director of a consumer-focused nonprofit, earned a spot on the primary ballot for Colorado Attorney General at the State Assembly, each garnering over 40% of the votes cast.

Michael Dougherty, current 20th Judicial District Attorney, received 18% of the ballots cast at the assembly.

He also submitted petitions to get on the ballot, which are still being reviewed. If they are deemed sufficient, Dougherty will also be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Attorney General.

A fourth candidate, former federal prosecutor Hetal Doshi, did not run in the state assembly, but submitted petitions on March 4, which are also still being checked.

If they are found to be sufficient, there will likely be four names on the Democratic primary ballot for Attorney General on June 30.

In CD3, entrepreneur and financial executive Alex Kelloff and real estate management company CEO Dwayne Romero earned the right to compete in the Democratic primary to challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. In CD4, Retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Eileen Laubacher does not have a primary opponent and will face one-term CD4 Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert in the November 3 general election.

its county assembly on March 14, attorney and U.S. Army veteran Jessica Killin will face business executive and decorated veteran Joe Reagan, who also served in the U.S. Army. At the assembly, Killin earned 40% of the vote to Reagan’s 34%.

Colorado’s newest and most closely divided congressional district, CD8, will see three Democrats competing in the June 30 primary to try to unseat one-term Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans.

He had two challengers for the nomination, state Rep. Brianna Titone, and business consultant John Mikos, both of whom fell just short of garnering the required 30% of delegates’ votes at the state assembly, so there won’t be a Democratic primary for that race.

olorado Department of Revenue’s Division of Gaming released figures showing that sports betting in February 2026 produced tax revenue of $3,443,360, a slight increase over February 2025. Tax revenue from sports betting is used to support essential water projects in our state. _____________________________

.S. Census Bureau says Colorado reached 6,012,561 residents, as of July 1, 2025. According to the State Demography Office our state is still

experiencing positive overall population growth (0.4% year-over-year, or 24,059 people, in 2025). This latest data reflects the strongest positive net migration to Weld, Douglas, Adams, El Paso, and Larimer counties, areas that have seen some of the largest increases in residential construction in recent years. The newest data also shows that high housing cost counties Eagle, Pitkin, and Summit, lost population to other states or counties. The counties with the largest population decline since the 2020 Census were Jefferson, Boulder, and Eagle counties. _____________________________

enner Sports Group, led by Broncos’ CEO Greg Penner and his wife, Carrie Walton Penner, is acquiring a 40% ownership stake in the Colorado Rockies. The sale was announced on April 10 by Rockies Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort and owner/general partner Charlie Monfort. As of now, neither Penner plans to have a regular management role with the Rockies. Their official statement said, “This investment from Penner Sports Group reflects our deep appreciation for what the Rockies mean to this region, the passion of their fans, and our confidence in the future of the franchise.” _____________________________

n April 9, the Colorado Republican Executive Committee voted down a motion to seek to limit participation in the June 30 primary to its party members, despite having been given an opening to do so by a recent court ruling. On March 31, federal Judge Philip A. Brimmer ruled in a lawsuit filed in 2023, that the rule for major parties opting out of letting unaffiliated voters participate in their primaries, set in a 2016 voter-approved ballot measure, “created a severe burden” for the political parties to do so.

Outgoing State GOP Chair Brita Horn (she has resigned effective April 17) was opposed to changing the rule for the June primary at this late date. State GOP National Committeeman Randy Corporon was in favor of the motion, reportedly drawn up by disbarred attorney John Eastman. _____________________________

TD CEO Debra Johnson announced she has declined an offer from the RTD Board of Directors to renew her contract, which expires in May 2027. During her five-andone-half years at the helm, the RTD increased its number of certified police officers from 19 to 106, including detectives, an evidence specialist, and a victim’s advocate. She led a successful campaign to decrease the impact of TABOR limits at the agency, and

also raised the pay of operators and mechanics. RTD still struggles with ridership and financial deficits. It is now facing, for the second time, an effort in the legislature to change its board from being all-elected to partially appointed by the governor. _____________________________

ichael Bennet, candidate for the nomination for Colorado governor in the June 30 Democratic primary, has announced he has the backing of multiple Colorado labor unions, including UAW Region 4 Midwest States Political Action Committee, Transport Workers Union of America, Colorado Professional Firefighters, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers State Conference, and United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters State Conference.

Bennet is taking criticism for withdrawing from a public forum sponsored by the Colorado Muslim community, accused of doing so to avoid facing questions about his votes in the Senate concerning Gaza. The forum was supposed to include him and his Democratic opponent for governor, Attorney General Phil Weiser. Weiser showed up and, according to the Denver Post, answered every question respectfully, while “holding his ground on the issues that are dear to him.”

How is a Revocable Living Trust taxed?

After you transfer your assets to your revocable living trust, the trust will be the legal owner of the assets.

However, for income purposes, the trust is defined as a “grantor trust” and is not treated as a separate taxpayer while you are alive and retain the right to revoke or change the trust.

The current IRS regulations provide a number of tax filing options for grantor trusts. Among other requirements, they provide that during your life, as long as you are a trustee of the trust and certain technical requirements are met, the trust is not required to file an income tax return or prepare any kind of summary of tax information.

No income need be reported in the name of the trust.

Instead, your social security number is used as the trust tax identification number and the income earned by any assets held by the trust is reported by you, on your individual income tax return.

If you are in a marriage recognized under federal law, you may continue to file joint income tax returns and report the trust income on your joint return.

Note that any grantor trust

may elect to get a tax ID number and file its own abbreviated tax return.

If, during your lifetime, you cease to serve as one of the trustees of the trust, neither a trust tax ID number, nor a trust income tax return are required. However, the successor trustee is required to provide you with a statement listing each separate item of income, deduction and credit that you are required to report on your tax return.

At your death, the trust will become irrevocable and will thereafter be treated as a separate taxpayer for income tax purposes. It will be required to get its own tax ID number and file its own income tax return (unless it elects to be treated as part of your estate for income tax purposes).

It is best to consult with an experienced estate plan attorney or tax professional to help with the tax reporting decisions and to prepare income tax returns for the trust and the estate.

What are the four key medical/estate plan documents you need now?

Many of my clients have asked: “What are the critical estate plan documents to have?” Merely being married does not give you the legal right to gain access to your spouse’s medical records or make medical decisions on your spouse’s behalf, even in an emergency.

Healthcare Power of Attorney; 2. General Financial Power of Attorney; 3. Advanced Directive for Medical/Surgical Treatment (“Living Will”); and 4. Will (or a Will with a Trust).

Careful medical/estate planning should include preparation and signing of these documents, to accomplish your goals and protect you, both during your lifetime, and at the time of passing. well as to identify the beneficiaries and the distributions to them, to accomplish your estate planning goals.

Rising Gas Prices Make bZ4X a Timely Choice With the price of oil and gasoline once again climbing, electric vehicles are starting to look a lot more attractive to everyday drivers — and not just in theory, but in real dollars and cents.

I was reminded of that this week while spending time behind the wheel of the Toyota bZ4X, Toyota’s all-electric entry into a rapidly growing market.

Estate planning for a digital world These tips from Merrill can help you ensure your heirs and executor have access to all the information you have stored online — while protecting your privacy.

Practically every aspect of our lives is inextricably tied to our devices and networks, and the digital assets we have accumulated have become just as critical as anything else we possess. We need to account for these assets in our estate plans, taking all eventualities into account.

What are “digital assets”? The term refers to any electronic record to which an individual has a right or interest.

These can be financial assets, including bill pay sites or virtual currencies; business assets, which might include a domain name or client data; personal assets like photos; and social assets like Facebook or LinkedIn accounts.

It is more than simply a matter of making sure your account information is safely stored and your passwords are secure. You also need a plan for how and when the people you trust can gain access. As you develop that plan, consider the following five tips.

Create a legal framework

Make an inventory of your digital assets “Creating a road map of the assets you own could be the most important thing you can do,” says Korzec. Documenting everything you do online will help ensure your heirs will not miss anything. Jot down the key accounts and assets you own and use, organized by type, including: • Financial: Include bank and brokerage accounts, online payment tools, credit cards, digital wallets and NFTs (nonfungible tokens).

• Business: If you own a business, those digital assets might include tax software, proprietary business software, client data, domain names, patents and more.

• Personal: This long list may cover email accounts, texts, contacts, medical records, photos, digital music, loyalty programs, streaming services, online shopping accounts and even gaming avatars.

Why not just give your heir, executor or fiduciary the passwords for your laptop, smartphone and other devices?

Unfortunately, this strategy can weaken your personal security. “Many people do not fully appreciate that digital assets are different animals from traditional assets such as bank accounts,” says Colin Korzec, head of Trust and Estate Settlement Services at Bank of America Private Bank. “They are often subject to terms of service agreements as well as state and federal laws.” In other words, others will likely need your explicit permission to go into these accounts.

• Social: Some social media sites have settings that let you designate what happens to them if you die.

Nonetheless, be sure to make your wishes known.

As you consider granting access to others, be aware of potential tradeoffs. Your personal email account, for example, might contain a trove of information that could help in settling your estate. Yet you may want to keep some messages private. Balancing those two needs requires a thoughtful approach. You can grant access to some digital accounts while excluding others or choose different people to receive access to different accounts.

One way of keeping your digital assets inventory and passwords safe is to save them on separate password-protected documents. Tools such as a password vault can serve as a secured central storage location, not only for passwords but also for key account information and documents your heirs and executors may need. Alternately, you can write down passwords and store them in a locked safe or a safe deposit box or keep them with your attorney.

Keep passwords separate While the inventory document gives you a place to note usernames, Korzec cautions against including passwords.

“Those passwords may have expired by the time the inventory is accessed,” he says. “Plus, the person with your inventory may not be authorized to access those accounts.”

Whichever way you choose, the executor you name in your will should be granted access to both the inventory and your passwords.

Engage experts when you need to In some cases, it may be worthwhile to call on a digital expert. That third party, for example, can examine a device for any references to a digital wallet or an NFT. “We had one client who had a relatively valuable painting on consignment that no heirs knew about — until a forensic computing expert found a reference to it stored electronically,” says Korzec. “It turns out it was worth a significant amount.”

Revisit your plan from time to time Just as you update your estate planning documents every couple of years or if something major changes, like a marriage or the birth of a grandchild, you will want to periodically take another look at your digital asset inventory.

Keeping track of those assets, Korzec says, “will ensure your loved ones and heirs are not spending an already difficult time scrambling for account access — which is probably not the legacy you intended to leave.”
