Columbine’s offense started out running the ball well, but when they faced a

third down and twelve after a false start penalty, they used a quick punt to get rid of the ball to avoid kicking it when Creek was expecting it.

Harmony can bring about healing

Mort would have reminded us last week about December 7, “A Day that will live in Infamy,”.

President FDR Roosevelt declared when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Many Americans died and it brought America into the war against Japan and Germany. May we remember Mort and our military past, present and future with great respect.

I keep asking the question on the Ukraine issue? Why did our Congress ever send them $400 million dollars in the first place?

As a part of the old Soviet Union that split away and fell into deep corruption why are American taxpayers bailing them out? I’m in favor of much less foreign aid and would focus more on Central and Latin American countries that are part of our Western hemisphere and culture.

The majority of the immigrants coming to our southern border are from Mexico and Central America. Wonderful countries with poor governments, lacking the rule of law and our constitution. They have been plagued with many dicta-

tors who plundered the wealth, squandered the oil revenues and fooled with socialism that has destroyed every economy where it has existed.

I fear the rise of socialism in America and that the younger generation is buying into all of the wealth equalization, free medical care and education, and the government just taking care of every person’s need and expense.

Right here in our neck of the woods, several progressive socialists have recently been elected to the Aurora city council and the new Mayor, Mike Coffman, now has to deal with a very divided city council with a majority leaning towards a “Sanctuary City” that he opposes. Part of the success of the new liberals’ political gains is directed at ICE and the many illegal immigrants that live in portions of the 57th largest city in America.

There would be no need for ICE if we had protected our borders over these past decades.

If we helped bring industry and development to our southern neighbors, we wouldn’t have to

use these stern and somewhat clandestine raids on many people who have entered America for just the opportunity of a job and food for their families. I know of many cases where long-time illegal immigrants who had long standing jobs and family members have been deported, who even have children who have been raised and graduated from college in Colorado. This mother became so frightened she just moved back to Mexico, now she is sorry that she ever left, but if you get deported legally it makes it very hard to ever return legally.

I hear from her friends that she may try and move to Canada to find a better life and job opportunity.

Thousands of DACA kids have been raised in America, this is their homeland. If President Trump is re-elected, he and Congress should pursue making them legal citizens. We do need to see a much lower rate of interest on college loans and perhaps some way for public service to gain credits towards the loan payments and life of the debt.

If these young people join the Rotary or Lions Clubs, or

any service organization they could get credit for public service. Even more serious, if they worked with the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or almost any non-profit that could lower the interest rate. Military service would automatically insure citizenship. The bottom line, there are ways to become creative to aid these young men and woman and reduce the growing hostility and frustration over ICE and DACA. We do have some really bad dudes that have entered the United States for the drug industry and criminal activities. We are a nation of laws and we need to enforce our laws and keep our residents safe. Thank God for our police and firemen and first responders who take care of us so well.

A special “thank you’ to the city public works department staffs who spent days and nights plowing the snow that was dumped on our cities during the storm.

Our leaders should be working together to seek answers, not anger, and if we can share ideas with civility, we can disagree, but not be disagreeable.

Let’s. use the god given brains that make Americans great.

His vast knowledge of local, state and national government will serve the city well over his terms in office. Mike Coffman is the right man for the job! *** The Arapahoe Republican breakfast club meeting at Maggiano’s at 7 a.m. Wed. morning heard from the winning city council members from Centennial and Aurora, along with

the new Mayor of Greenwood Village, George Lantz. Quite a contrast between the calmer status of Greenwood Village where the new mayor ran unopposed to the spirited elections in Centennial and Aurora.

The election winners hailed the power of shoe leather as they walked miles knocking on doors. Centennial council members will take office in January and Greenwood candidates have already been sworn in and attending their second council session.

The transitions connected to retirement can be a move to another location, a downsizing of a residence, and of course beginning to plan for the ultimate transition. I once heard the joke that said you want to plan transitions so that the last check in your account payable to the funeral director bounces.

He was the driving force in starting the campaign for a new CSU football stadium when he served as the Ram Athletic Director almost a decade ago.

He was the Ram quarterback in his younger days and played professional football. Many of his old football friends were at the party and suggesting former Ram football star Tony Alford be the new CSU football coach replacing Mike Bobo. Alford is the assistant head coach for 13-0 Ohio State. Perhaps this former star running back might return to CSU from Ohio State.

Jack Graham would have made a great CSU president. *** Tis the holiday party season so Saturday night we were invited to attend the Colorado Consulate Corp holiday party out in Lakewood at the resident of the honorary Spanish consul, Pepe Parrado and his first lady Patricia. A jovial and diverse group of guests attended the party with lapel flag pins displaying their country. Denver is a hub of both honorary and professional consuls representing foreign nations . *** Following the victorious Bronco victory, we attended the Arapahoe County Republican holiday party at the Radisson hotel on Parker road. With the upcoming election, candidates are already announcing for the various county and state offices. County Commissioners Jeff Baker and Bill Holen are both up for re-election. The list includes a new district attorney and Colorado senate and house seats and the 6th Congressional position of Jason Crowe. After the 2020 census, Colorado may receive two new congressional seats and the present districts will be realigned. That should be interesting! *** Christmas lights are going up everywhere and with the cold, snowy weather the holiday season has bloomed. Pay attention to our advertisers and shop in the local stores for your gift items. We can’t let Amazon destroy our retail shop outlets. ***

Let it snow, but please plow it Despite prognostications of global warming and the end of life on earth in ten years, winter came early to Denver, packing a punch.

Snow fell on Halloween and then again before Thanksgiving, the latter storm making a mess of Thanksgiving travel plans for many.

Areas of metro Denver were literally buried in snow a few weeks ago, more than two feet in some parts. It made a mess of traffic while falling and shortly thereafter, but one would expect the roads to be plowed and clean within a day or two, right?

Instead many Denver residential streets resembled a lunar landscape, covered in

ice and deep ruts, making driving in anything short of a Mars rover, close to impossible. Denver Public Works is responsible for snow removal and they appeared to drop the ball during the ThanksgivBY BRIAN C. ing storm.

JOONDEPH The problem was a combination of not enough plows and timing of deicer placement on the streets, as reported by Westword. Of course, it’s a challenge, made worse as the amount of snow increases, but that is why cities have departments, planners, and equipment to handle the needs of their city.

And this is Denver, not Miami. If Miami got a foot of snow, we would be quite understanding if

they didn’t handle it well.

But not for Denver. Denver Public Works can’t rely on the sun coming out the day after the snowstorm, melting everything away in one day, despite the mostly sunny climate we enjoy.

Snow removal is also one of the services that the numerous taxes, whether property, sales or hotel occupancy taxes, should be funding.

Instead Denver is pushing for safe injection sites, encouraging a behavior they also want to discourage, spending money that might otherwise go toward snow removal.

Aside from inconvenience to Denver residents, as well as those who work in Denver or drive through the city, there is a danger from auto accidents and personal injury from falls on street ice. Emergency vehicles will face similar challenges in

situations where a few extra minutes might be the difference between life and death.

The roads themselves also suffer as when the ice finally does melt, flooding cracks and gutters, only to freeze at night, expanding and creating potholes and otherwise destroying the roads.

The New York Times, in 2014, predicted the end of snow. Not quite, at least in Denver, and we are not yet even officially into winter.

Early December also brought more than two feet of snow to many northeastern cities.

Hopefully Denver and other major US cities remember to keep snow removal as a winter priority, besides allocating funds for safe injection sites, transgendered bathrooms, sanctuary programs for illegal aliens, and other initiatives that do nothing for residents trying to drive down the street after the next snowstorm.

Columbine got their first touchdown on the next series after strong runs by Adam Harrington, Tanner Hollens, and Braeden Hogan. Creek defenders Al Ashford III, Chavis Nourse, Dade Bissell, Myles Purchase, and Delonte Dickey (who had five solo tackles and ten assists during the game), didn’t make it easy for them, but the Columbine runners wanted to get back in the game. Hollens ran in for the score with just under five minutes left in the third period.

After the PAT by Adam Tasel, it was 21-7 Creek.After a penalty on Creek not long after a 14-yard run by Stacks on the next series had Creek facing a third and 16, Hammond III threw an intercep-

tion to Columbine’s Tanner Hollens that he ran back to the Creek 39-yard line. After a face mask penalty on Creek and a holding penalty on Columbine, Columbine was on Creek’s 19-yard line before Purchase got in the way of Columbine QB Jadon Holliday’s pass to Osirus Smith on a third and 16. Columbine had to settle for a field goal, making it 21-10 with ten minutes left in the game.

Two more penalties on Creek on the next series, for pass interference (that looked questionable on replay on the Broncos’ scoreboard) and a false start led to a punt by Gunnar Helm. Soon after they got the ball back, Columbine got called for holding and they had to punt. Everyone was getting tired.

Creek had a first down on the six-yard line that Stacks converted easily. A successful PAT by Sanchez Ventura made it 28-10 with just under five minutes left in the game.

Columbine’s Harrington returned the Creek kick-off to their own 22-yard line before being wrapped up by four Creek players. Holliday completed a pass to Hollens, who was quickly tackled by linebacker Marcus Alexander. On a third and 17, Holliday threw a pass that was intercepted by Purchase, who ran it in for a Creek touchdown, making it 35-10 after the PAT with 2:42 to go.

That’s how the 2019 5A Colorado state football championship game ended. Creek players completed a perfect season after losing that championship game in 2018.

Bacon, Leek and Cheese Mini Quiches MAKES 4 DOZEN 8 slices bacon, chopped 3 cups thinly sliced leeks including light green tops, rinsed and drained 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 1¼ cups half-and-half 1 cup grated cheese, such as Cheddar, Gruyere or Jalapeno Cheddar 2 teaspoons dried thyme 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon pepper ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 (17-ounce) packages frozen puff pastry, thawed Cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium-high heat for 8 to 10 minutes or until brown and crisp, stirring frequently. Remove to paper towels using a slotted spoon, reserving 1 to 2 tablespoons drippings in the skillet. Cook the leeks in the reserved drippings over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Let stand to cool.

Beat the eggs and egg yolks in a medium bowl. Add the half-and-half, cheese, thyme, salt, pepper and nutmeg and mix well. Stir in the bacon and leeks.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, moving the oven racks to the top third and bottom third positions. Spray 48 miniature muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray.

Roll each puff pastry sheet into a 10 × 18-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface using a floured rolling pin.

Cut into a total of 48 circles using a 3-inch biscuit cutter.

Fit each circle evenly into a prepared muffin cup, pressing up the sides. Fill each cup with about 1 tablespoonful of the egg mixture, filling the cups completely. Bake for 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown, rearranging the pans halfway through the baking time. Garnish with a sprig of fresh thyme.

Molly’s Spirits opens Mega Store in Greenwood Village

olly’s Spirits was a host at the recent “Taste of Greenwood Village” on the eve of opening their 25,000 sq. ft store in the Arapahoe Market Center at 8557 E. Arapahoe Road adjacent to Sprouts grocery outlet.

This is local owner Rufus Nagel’s second Molly’s location opening his first store in Lakewood in 2014. The passage of Senate Bill 16-197 allows Nagel a second location and he has chosen Greenwood Village.

He relates, “After searching for an ideal location we have found it in the vibrant Greenwood Village community.”

Nagle, a Denver resident, is a native New Yorker and a graduate of The University of Chicago.

He spent part of his successful career in Silicon Valley before entering the real estate business in the Denver area. His knowledge of computers and technology is unique at Molly’s. He has engineered computer pricing with imbedded chips under every wine and liquor product. This technology allows the store to track inventory, leading sale items, and to place competitive pricing instantly on the 12,000 adult beverage brands.

Opportunity Coalition quarterly panel focuses on education

The Rotunda Room at the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science on the DU campus was the venue for Opportunity Coalition’s quarterly panel of experts. The topic of education was addressed featuring answers to questions such as: How does Colorado’s education system rank nationally? What can be done to increase effectiveness with education programs on both a local and national level? Opportunity Coalition promotes the ideals of free markets, capitalism, Constitutional values and liberty. Business owners,

Your Definitive Guide To Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain It’s that time of the year! Bring on the eggnog, cookies, turkey, and holiday pies—with a side of weight gain, bloating, heartburn, and irritability! We can laugh about it, but on a more serious note, it can sometimes feel impossible to enjoy the holidays without gaining weight and feeling poorly. I’m here to tell you that it is possible to enjoy this time of the year—and the food and drinks that come with it—while still staying fit and energized. It just takes a little extra mindfulness and planning ahead. Here are 10 tips for making this your best holiday season ever: 1. Don’t shame yourself.

Feeling bad about yourself is never constructive and will often cause you to binge on anything you can find to feel better. With shame comes self-blame, self-destruction, and punishment, which ultimately leads to a loss of connection with one’s values and sense of self. So, no denying yourself. If you are craving something, have it. Just keep the portion small and appreciate every bite.

6. Don’t skip meals, and do keep portions small.

Many people avoid eating breakfast or lunch and then gorge during dinner during the holidays, thinking that they are saving their calories for later. This method may help you avoid the shame of guilt, but it doesn’t do much good to your metabolism or your weight—as the tendency is to be so famished that you binge and eat more than your body can process. If you’re used to eating three meals a day, you’re better off eating small portions for breakfast and lunch and continuing these small portions throughout the holidays. Load your meals with protein and a little healthy fat (like avocado or coconut oil), and you will find that you will feel full for longer period of time, which will help you stick to smaller portions.

Congratulations and good luck to Haley and Sydney from The Villager and St. Mary’s Academy I got interested in volleyball when my family and I took our Thanksgiving vacation down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I saw some people playing beach volleyball and wanted to join but was too young and inexperienced. I took that motivation and when I got home to Colorado, I got to work and joined a club that would teach me the fundamentals of the game.

My parents have played a very large role in my volleyball career, my dad was the first one to pick me up when I was down because I was too young to play, and he was the one who gave me the motivation to start the sport and “prove them wrong.” My mom has been there for me in every way imaginable, both her and my dad are the ones I look to when I need someone in the stands to give me the strength mid-game. My coaches,

though I have had many, have made me the player I am today. They have pushed me when I needed it the most and comforted me when times got tough.

I became interested in Jacksonville Univesity in the middle of my junior year. They looked at my recruiting website and we got on the phone and talked about the option of taking an official visit.

Surely enough I did and the minute I stepped into the gym and on the campus, I knew it was the place for me. I fell in love with the campus, academics, coaches, and warm weather.

My goals after college include either going overseas to play indoor, or playing in the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) and playing beach volleyball.

It was not my choice to start swimming, but I would never go back. The summer of my eleventh birthday (summer before sixth grade) my younger brothers got involved in summer league and my mom gave me the choice to either watch them swim or get into the pool, too. I ended up getting in. My parents have never been over-bearing when it comes to the sports I have played, but there have always been two rules: have fun, and participate in at least one sport. My parents have supported me through most of the choices that I have made in swimming, whether it be quitting soccer to focus on swimming or not going on a family vacation in order to train. My coaches have

I first became interested in the University of Texas at Austin in eighth grade, when I traveled to the school for a meet. I never thought I would actually end up going there. I am so excited for the journey to come, and while I don’t have any particular goals for in the pool, I hope to continue to enjoy the sport and all the opportunities it has presented me.

Dear Readers, This week’s column is a continuation of the advantages to the donor of planned giving and types of planned gifts (Part 2).

The advantages of planned gifts are many, but some of the more popular reasons for establishing this type of gift are: 1. Providing life income to the donors; 2. Receiving a charitable income tax deduction; 3. Avoiding or mitigating capital gains taxes by gifting appreciated long-held property; 4. Removing assets from one’s

estate to lessen the estate tax burden; 5. Turning low or non-income-producing assets into higher income payouts; 6. Fulfilling one’s charitable intent by supporting a favorite charity; and 7. Providing a charitable gift while receiving tax benefits and maintaining control of the asset during one’s lifetime.

The types of planned gifts include bequests, which is the basic, easiest and most popular planned gift. Many planned gifts to charities are bequests. A charitable bequest is a provision in your Will or Trust that designates a charity as a beneficiary. Bequests can either be specific (leaving a specific asset or a set sum of money to the charity) or general (leaving a percentage of your estate to the charity).

The greatest advantage of bequests to charity is that you, the donor, maintain control over your assets until your death. If the Estate’s assets

cannot support payment of the bequest to a charity, there is no legal obligation on the part of the Estate to make payment.

The donor can also change his or her beneficiaries during life and can remove a charity or any other beneficiary from his or her Will.

Also, a bequest can be designated to be used for any purpose that the donor wishes, as long as the gift is not to be used for an intention that is in violation of the law. If you have a particular use to which you would like your bequest directed, the charity will be most pleased if the terms of your intentions are set forth specifically in your Will, so that the charity can use your gift in the way that you intended.

Another way to provide a planned gift to a charity is to include your favorite non-profit organization in your retirement plan documents. You can designate a charity as your beneficiary of your Individual Retirement

Account (IRA), 401(k) or other qualified retirement plan. It is preferable to fund this type of asset because the proceeds from these accounts are, at death, considered income in respect of a decedent (IRD).

This tax law concept is generally defined as taxable income earned but not received prior to death. No matter who the beneficiary is, the income, when received, will be taxed to the beneficiary as it would have been taxed to the decedent. Generally, inherited property is not included in a heir’s taxable income, but if a family member receives an IRD asset, he or she will be subject to income tax when the gift is distributed.

When a donor provides at death for a direct transfer from his or her retirement account to a qualified charity, however, the entire value of the IRD assets will go to the charity tax free. In addition, the donor’s estate receives a charitable estate tax deduction for the entire amount of the gift.

In this book he tells a story of a Cambodian rice-farmer that got his leg blown off in the war. When he was fitted with a prosthetic leg and rehabilitated, he returned to work in the same rice field where he lost his leg. He became depressed and cried all the time. He went to a doctor to seek help for his depression. The doctors and other medical personnel listened to

him. Instead of giving him antidepressants, they bought him a cow and taught him how to become a dairy farmer. It took a while, but this man was no longer depressed and anxious when he went to work.

This sounds like a simplistic story, but it has amazing insight and meaning. In Cambodia there was no social norming of dispensing anti-depressants. Their medical community went deeper to look for the root cause of the depression and anxiety the rice-farmer was experiencing.

In the United States, we have a serious depression and anxiety problem. Certainly, there are chemical imbalances in the brain and other biological reasons that need to be addressed. However, these are not the only issues we need to combat if we are to deal effectively with the crisis of mental health.

According to Hari, causality is not just the biological imbalances that are at issue, there are other factors outlined in the way we live.

Studies outline that when surveyed, 39% of Americans report they are lonely. Other data highlights that many feel they have no control over their job or even their life.

Still others outline their lives

are devoid of meaning and purpose and many depressed people report they rarely get out, play and enjoy nature.

Belonging, life purpose, significance, hope for a positive future, and being valued by others are deep psychological needs. The World Health Organization has been telling us for years that we are not weak or broken if we are depressed or anxious, but rather we are humans with profound unmet needs. Along with biological imbalances, we have severe imbalances in the way we live. Our ancestors banded together to conquer the West, discover new frontiers, and build communities together.

Humans flourished when we lived in tribes and had a pur-

pose that was bigger than ourselves. Now the social mantra is “Be yourself”, “Be who you are” “Rugged individualism” when the healthier message is, “Be us”, “Be a team and let’s live cooperatively and collaboratively”.

You’ll be asked to provide proof of death by providing a copy of either an obituary, death certificate or memorial card.

Or, if you would rather have her account deleted go to Facebook.com/help, and type in “How do I

request the removal of a deceased family member’s Facebook account?” This also requires proof of death plus verification that you’re an immediate family member or executor of the account holder.

Instagram

Instagram’s policy on a deceased users’ account is similar to its parent company, Facebook. A deceased users’ account can either be memorialized or removed, which you can request at Help.Instagram. com/264154560391256.

Like Facebook, to memorialize an Instagram account requires proof of death, but to remove an account you’ll also need to provide verification that you’re an immediate family member.

Twitter

If your sister was a Twitter user, Twitter will work with

anyone who is authorized to act on behalf of her estate, or with a verified immediate family member to have an account deactivated. To request the removal of your sister’s account, go to Help.

After you submit your request, Twitter will email you with instructions for providing more details, including information about the deceased, a copy of your ID, and a copy of the deceased’s death certificate.

Author You, a Denver organization for authors, is partnering with B&N to bring you great

New sets and costumes planned for 60th Anniversary of The Nutcracker —Continued from previous page—

Colorado Ballet is in the midst of its 59th production of The Nutcracker, the beloved holiday tradition of families across the state.

Each season, the company stages about 27 performances of the classic ballet with sets and costumes dating back to 1986 when the San Francisco Ballet created them. Colorado Ballet acquired the entire production in 2005 when it moved into the renovated Ellie Caulkins Opera House and has used it season after season since then.

Yes, that’s 33 years of the beautiful Victorian living room where Clara receives the mysterious wooden nutcrack-

er. And 33 years of the magical Land of the Snow and Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy that we know and love.

But after so many years and performances, sets and costumes have become worn and tattered. Even the nutcracker doll is falling apart. Due to excellent lighting techniques, audiences don’t see the duct tape around Mother Ginger’s hand or the built-up sweat (and odor!) on the soldiers jackets or the faded colors of the Spanish ballerinas’ dresses. There’s so much dust, foam and pieces of debris in the mouse headpieces that the dancers must wear goggles!

Everything has become frag-

ile and often must be pieced together after a performance.

This is totally not acceptable for the ballet company whose Nutcracker was named the most-loved Nutcracker production in the nation by Goldstar in 2016.

To live up to that level of excellence, Artistic Director Gil Boggs has enlisted the help of renowned designers to create entirely new sets and 300 new costumes that will keep the magic going for decades of holidays to come beginning with the 2020 season. He chose Holly Hynes to create the costumes. Hynes, an award-winning designer, has

fashioned costumes for more than 250 ballets. She served as director of costumes for New York City Ballet for 21 years and resident costume designer at the Suzanne Farrell Ballet at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Set designer is still to be announced.

Choreography will stay the same and the style will remain classic Victorian, Boggs promised. “I want this to be your grandmother’s Nutcracker,” he said.

Because Colorado Ballet is a non-profit organization, it relies on community support. To that end, it is inviting the communi-

ty to play a part in financing the new Nutcracker production by donating to its crowd-funding campaign Go Fund The Magic.

Though around $2.5 million is needed, the campaign goal is $100,000. You can find a link to the campaign on coloradoballet. org.

The Stoney Brook Book Club celebrated their 10th anniversary on December 2 with a luncheon at YaYa’s.

The club has read and discussed 100 books - some were very good, occasionally we made a bad choice said Shirley Klotz, one of the members.

The club presented a gift to Jan Klatskin who has kept the records and meetings on track for

the full decade.

The SBBC was started by three Stoney Brook neighbors who wanted a book club where everyone was within walking distance of each other. Most were not acquainted with each other but are very good friends now. Another objective ten years ago was to keep the interest in reading books alive and well!

2020 Toyota Tacoma Pro rumbles upward This Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro 4x4 has army green paint and looks like a menacing combat vehicle. A good appearance for the road warrior driving experiences underway on metro jammed highways.

Where is everyone going day and night?

The Tacoma has a 3.5L, V6 engine and an excellent sequential six-speed transmission that is a trademark for Toyota vehicles. This truck is manufactured in San Antonio, TX. The extended cab allows for five-passengers with heated driver 10-way adjustable leather front seats. The center console and radio dials work well and are easy to use while driving. There is a thin rear window and the mufflers rumbles, making considerable cabin noise during the drive.

There is also excessive road chatter coming from the tires

and asphalt highway, enough to make conversations difficult during the drive.

The transmission and engine are adequate, and the sequential transmission shifts easily to a higher or lower gear range. The truck handles well at high speeds and the suspen-

sion and steering are precise for a larger vehicle. Gas mileage averaged 20 mpg. overall.

The Tacoma has skid plates and an electric transfer case for easy shifting to 2- or 4-wheel drive. A towing hitch for pulling a boat or trailer are boosted with oil cooling and

power steering assistance.

Resident Artist Susan Cooper’s art is displayed at the CHV Village Center

The new Cherry Hills Village city hall building was the sight of an artist’s reception in honor of internationally renowned artist and local resident Susan Cooper and her collection entitled, “A View From the Village.” The collection was inspired by Cooper’s life as a resident artist in CHV. The event was held on Dec. 4, hosted by the CHV Art Commission. The commission’s members are Ann Polumbus, chair, Dave Schmidt, vice-chair, Gay Warren, Elaine Asarch, Kathie Finger, Alison Lynch, and

Cooper explained that the large triptych hanging in the main lobby at the CHV Village Center contained three different perspectives, coming from the left, right, and center.

The multi-piece display on the wall outside the city council chamber is called “Life Cycle.”

It is comprised of images from infancy to childhood to maturity to old age.

The most unique piece of the collection is a neon green plexiglass abstract that contains an accurate map of CHV in the background and is overlaid with the buildings of the city’s Village Center.

Susan Cooper is an internationally-renowned artist who has largely focused on civic art. In addition to two 14 feet by 8 feet oil-on-wood murals on permanent display in the rotunda of the City and County of Denver and a 36 feet by 32 feet by 20 feet steel and copper installation on the outside wall of the Aurora Police Department district one building, she has pieces in the Claremont, CA city hall, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, and at colleges in Pueblo and Durango, CO. Many have seen her colorful public art at 13 different RTD Light Rail stations, including the Belleview, Orchard, Arapahoe, and Lincoln Stations. Cooper’s work has been shown around the world, including recently in Poland.
