Who Needs Instructions?

I’ve never been a gadget person.

Oh sure, I have a stapler. But mostly I avoid gadgets in general and kitchen gadgets in particular. That’s partly because I don’t want any more clutter in my kitchen. There’s already a toaster, a radio and three weeks’ worth of junk mail on my kitchen counter. I need to keep some space clear for preparing food and stacking dirty dishes.

I also avoid gizmos and gadgets because they can be so complicated. At least electronic and electrical ones can be. I know my way around a spatula and a wooden spoon. And I get along fine with pizza cutters and carrot peelers. But if there are a lot of buttons to push and multiple settings to choose from, I get so overwhelmed. I have to stop and rest and dinner never gets finished.

It doesn’t help that I have issues with instruction manuals, the main one being I hate to read them. They’re boring and confusing and written in type the size of ant feet.

Knowing how I feel you’ll be surprised to learn that I recently purchased a brand new, fancy air fryer. For those unfamiliar with them, let me explain. Air fryers are like those hair dryers at the beauty shop, except they’re way hotter and you won’t find anyone’s hair in them, which is a plus.

Cooking with air fryers is quick and healthful because it doesn’t require oil. Still it had never occurred to me to get one despite the recommendations of several friends. I figured it was just another fad.

They’d been equally excited about multi-cookers, bread makers and slushie machines that now sit gathering dust in their pantries.

But then fate intervened.

One of my brothers and his wife had decided to get a new air fryer and were passing their old one on to another of my siblings. They left it with me because I would see the new owner before they would.

It sat on my counter taking up space for a few days. And then one day in a rare bout of culinary daring I decided to try it out. The instruction manual was long gone but that was okay. I wouldn’t have read it anyway.

I still managed to make some chicken using a recipe I found online. And it only took me one frantic phone call to the fryer’s former owner to do it.

The next day I tried some potatoes and later some steaks.

And by the time the air fryer’s

new owner came to pick it up, I was considering hiding it and telling him we’d never received it.

Instead, my husband and I went shopping.

And just like that we joined the estimated 60 percent of American households that are now frying with air. And we didn’t just get an air fryer. No, we got a Cadillac of an air fryer because my husband is not intimidated by buttons and instruction manuals. Unfortunately, he doesn’t do the cooking.

Our air fryer is complicated. It has two baskets so I can cook chicken and potatoes at the same time. Or destroy

them at the same time.

And it not only fries, it dehydrates, warms, roasts, bakes, reheats and broils—theoretically anyway. I haven’t tried any of those settings yet because that would require reading the instruction manual.

But I have managed to air fry all sorts of things and, with the exception of some pork chops that resembled used kitchen sponges when they were done, it’s all been edible.

Just think what I could do if I read the instructions.

Can U.S. Achieve Freedom for Venezuela?

The news was dramatic this past weekend with the arrest and apprehension of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. It was a strategic coup to sweep into Caracas in the middle of the night and apprehend the Maduros’ asleep in their palace.

The major news channels took different positions, CNN hosting critics and FOX NEWS hailing the event. CNN showed protesters in the streets of New York; FOX NEWS featured Venezuelans celebrating in the streets of Miami over the arrest and potential freedom for Venezuela, some ecstatic about being able to return to their homeland. Over eight million of the population have fled from the country in recent years.

I have some friends from Venezuela; one a native woman who married an American who was working in the oil industry. They fled the country a dozen years ago, having to pay $25,000 to leave in fear of their lives. They relate the terror and fear of Chavez gangs roaming the countryside and seizing private property.

Those of us who had the opportunity to study American history in high school and an elective in college learned about the legendary Monroe Doctrine, always a question on history exams to explain the significance of the Monroe Doctrine proclaimed by President James Monroe in 1823. The Doctrine was proclaimed against foreign power colonization in the Western Hemisphere in exchange for Ameran non-interference in European affairs. Entire nations have been built on this simplistic premise. Communist Russia began under this principle in the late 19th century, it, became militarily powerful in the 20th century. Its economy was crushed under central control in the 21st century. This con-

cept lives on in China and a modified version, Socialism, thrives throughout the world.

Communism takes both the means of production (corporations, factories, farms) and the output from production (products, service) to its central government, to be distributed “fairly and equally”. The modified version of Communism is Socialism, it taxes the private citizen and regulates private industry. The end result is always the same, a very powerful entity controls all. Both are the opposite of individual freedom.

Communism, fascism and socialism start as the religion of envy and morphs into the religion of greed. Unthinkingly, many decent citizens

believe in all powerful central control, the government.

They have faith in their brand of religion, that a man-made entity, a government, will take care of them and protect them, deliver them from evil.

In order to comprehend this error, one must have historical vision over centuries, and millennia, not the short span of a human life. This ignorance of history is the only reason so many citizens try the abject failure of central control.

Ergo, we have one school of thought that wants to rectify inequality through a central controlling entity, a government, a dictator or monarch.

This method takes everything from its citizens to create misery for all. Every dollar our government spends is taken from a person who worked for that dollar, who earned it.

We are blessed with another philosophy that takes the opposite approach: That

The classroom was full of young students. How they were screened for entry might be a different question. In summary, this administration plans on enforcing the Monroe Doctrine and has the muscle to walk the talk. The Communists have formed a triangle of support from the cesspool of Venezuela to Cuba, and Nicaragua, and spreading like a disease to other Latin America countries and even to New York City with the new mayor.

Like ancient Rome before the fall, the enemies are at our gates.

We are celebrating our beloved Broncos and a possible Super Bowl run while our foes have established very strong footholds in Venezuela. No doubt political parties and leadership will disagree over the present and the future. Many will agree that Maduro had to go, but what’s next? Let’s hope that peace through strength works and freedom and democracy will reign again for the people in Venezuela. certain rights accrue only to the individual and individual liberty is its objective. irst American State Bank’s 12th Annual The Village Toy Drive was a major success this year, donating thousands of toys to Volunteers of America Colorado.

Founded by Michelle Gruber, VP First American State Bank, The Village Toy Drive’s mission is to ensure children across Colorado experience a magical Christmas and holiday season.

This year’s effort included five events across the state to raise awareness and collect donations, along with fifteen drop-off locations that helped make the campaign possible.

After ‘Second Season,’ NFL to tackle officials The National Football League’s “Second Season” is finally here.

Six Wild Card games this weekend mark the start of a month-long march to Levi’s Stadium, site of Super Bowl LX. But the suspense won’t end when a champion is decided at the conclusion of Game 13 on February 8 in Santa Clara, California.

After that, ardent fans of pro football will be asking: Will officials be on strike when the 2026 NFL season begins?

Even in Denver, if somehow the Broncos hoist another Lombardi Trophy at a downtown parade (unlikely as that seems after watching them plod past the Justin Herbert-less Chargers 19-3 last Sunday), that question will be front and center after parade euphoria dies down.

It wouldn’t be the first time the NFL used replacement officials if the 2026 season begins with the NFL’s regular officials locked out or on strike. The first three weeks of games in 2012 were called by scabs, and no one—not players, coaches or fans—was satisfied.

Of course, dissatisfaction is at the heart of the pending dispute. The NFL abhors controversy, and too many on-field rulings are proven to be in error, as things stand now. The union dislikes the solution the league wants to employ.

The current labor contract between the NFL and the union representing the men and women who decide whether or not a caught pass is really a catch, if someone is guilty of holding or interfering with another’s attempt at a pass reception, and numerous other infractions effectively expires when the game clock runs out at Super Bowl LX. The sides have been meeting, but a recent memo from the league to its teams ominously reported, “Those discussions have been unsuccessful.”

The NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) countered in a statement issued by Executive Director Scott Green that reads: “Our union’s negotiating committee is working diligently on behalf of members, and we will continue to respect that process. We look forward to our continued conversations with the league as we make progress towards a

new CBA (collective bargaining agreement).”

In this case, the biggest obstacle to agreeing on a new labor agreement is an issue that’s as old as unionized labor: seniority.

Unions, virtually without exception, view longevity as inviolate, deserving first claim on whatever perks are associated with the given job (in addition to such staples as choosing vacation time and, in many cases, shifts and days off).

The perk in question in this instance is post-season assignment. The NFL wants its best officials—regardless of length of service—calling the games in the “Second Season.” In typical organized labor policy, the union insists that length of service should take priority over degrees of competence.

And the NFLRA’s current CBA provides that officials must have completed two full seasons on the field before they’re eligible to work “Second Season” games—regardless of their relative performance level.

Keep this in mind as you watch the next month of games. An official’s call that affects the outcome of any game is one bad call too many—whether or not it’s your team that suffers.

Rarely is collective bargaining reduced to a single issue. Working conditions (in this case, performance accountability to determine playoff assignments) and wages (a compensation in-

crease for such an important change) are the major parts of this seniority mix.

Compromise is required.

I left the editorial department of Rocky Mountain News in 1992 at the publisher’s request and spent 10 years as Denver Publishing Company’s head of labor relations.

As such, I negotiated contracts with seven unions representing every aspect of newspaper operations, including a unit that represented such disparate elements as circulation customer services clerks, classified ad takers, paperhandlers, machinists, business office workers and newsroom staff..

I certainly represented company positions that were unpopular with, if not anathema to, various bargaining units.

But I found that explaining the reasoning behind the company’s needs (no matter how long that took) and maintaining a good relationship with each union’s leaders prevented the kind of hard feelings that led to labor unrest.

I’d say that same approach is what’s needed in the bargaining between the NFL and the NFLRA. The league must find a way to convince the union that it should stand for the quality of its product.

And the union must receive reasonable increased pay in return.

Denver Celebrates the 120th Anniversary of the National Western Stock Show With Downtown Parade on January 8th

T

he National Western Stock Show, presented

by CommonSpirit Health, will celebrate the start of its 120th anniversary with its iconic Kick-Off Parade on Thursday, January 8, at 12 p.m. The parade brings Western heritage to the heart of downtown Denver and sets the stage for a Stock Show bigger than ever before.

The parade starts outside Denver Union Station and travels 12 blocks down 17th Street to Glenarm Place, welcoming thousands of spectators as it signals the official start of the Stock Show.

This year’s Grand Marshal is Pete Coors, director emeritus of Molson Coors Beverage Company and longtime Western Stock Show Association board member. Coors will lead a procession of more than 30 Longhorn cattle, along with horses, Western wagons, and the sights and sounds that make the Stock Show iconic.

“The Stock Show Kick-Off parade brings the spirit of the West straight into downtown Denver and sets the tone for the entire National Western,” said Wes Allison, President and CEO of the National Western Stock Show. “With Pete Coors as Grand Marshal and the opening of the new Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Livestock Center and The Legacy building, this year’s parade marks an unforgettable start to our 120th anniversary.”

Curtis Center Closed in January for Renovations The Curtis Center for the Arts will be closed throughout January for maintenance and renovations, and will reopen on Monday, February 2, 2026, with a brand-new exhibit for Youth Art Month.

The scope of work will include refinishing the original hardwood floors, painting all the walls and trim, installing additional storage cabinets, and remodeling the kitchen in the basement of the building

New state laws impact gun shows, food trucks, and the right to abortion Beginning January 1, 2026, under Colorado law: ♦ Gun show promoters must have a security plan in place before a show is held and they must share it with local law enforcement. The plan must include safety measures (e.g., video surveillance), admission procedures that prevent the entry of anyone under 18 without a parent or guardian, and a method to verify that all firearm purchases made at the show comply with the required three-day waiting period before the weapon is delivered. The promoter is also responsible for making sure that all sales of firearms at the show comply with all applicable state, local and federal laws (HB25-1238). ♦ Landlords are subject to additional requirements for returning or justifying the retention of security deposits of rental tenants.

The definition of “normal wear and tear” as utilized for such deposits is expanded, as are requirements for arranging a walk-through with a tenant after their belongings have been moved, and providing a written, detailed description of the reasons any part of a security deposit is retained.

In any court action around the retaining of a security deposit, the burden of proof is on the landlord (HB251249).

♦ The will of Colorado voters, as expressed by the passage of Amendment 79 in November 2024, is implemented by making public funds available to pay for abortion as a regular health benefit. In addition to passing that rule, voters “added a state constitutional amendment recognizing the right to an abortion and prohibiting Colorado state and local governments from denying, impeding, or discriminating against the exercise of that right, including prohibiting health insurance companies from excluding coverage for abortion.” This law brings that voter-approved policy into state statute (SB25183). ♦ All health insurance plans must include benefits that cover “the prevention of, screening for, and treatment of behavioral, mental health, and substance use disorders” that are as extensive as benefits for physical illness (HB25-1002). ♦ Prices for goods, services, or property that are offered, displayed, or advertised, must clearly and conspicuously disclose the total price that a person may pay

for the good, service, or property, except for governmental or shipping charges.

Also prohibits a landlord from requiring a tenant to pay certain prohibited fees and charges (HB25-1090). ♦ Manufacturers of commonly used digital electronic equipment manufactured and sold or used for the first time in Colorado on or after July 1, 2021, are required to facilitate the repair of its equipment by independent repair providers or owners by enabling them to obtain and install replacement parts. Independent repair providers must represent themselves as such, and not as being authorized by the manufacturer. Highly technical equipment is exempted from this law, including aviation and motor vehicles, marine vessels, medical devices other than wheelchairs, certain safety and security equipment, certain construction-related and energy-related equipment, and video game consoles. Also exempted are “devices, components, or systems designed to perform or facilitate quantum information processing and quantum sensing devices that exploit quantum phenomena in certain instances.” (HB24-1121 and HB25-1330). ♦ Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA) is a category of health provider

created in November 2024 by a vote of the people of Colorado. This law states that a VPA may only practice veterinary medicine under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. It also limits to three the number of VPAs any veterinarian may supervise at one time.

The state board of veterinary medicine is required to create rules and regulations for VPAs (HB25-1285). ♦ Treatment works for graywater (water discharged from bathtubs, showers, bathroom and laundry sinks, and washing machines that may be reused for non-potable purposes) are authorized, so that it can be used for specified purposes, including new construction projects. This law states that local jurisdictions have the right to opt out of allowing graywater or its treatment within their boundaries. One area city, Greenwood Village, did that, passing an ordinance prohibiting the use of graywater, as has been its longstanding practice, on November 3, 2025, hence it is not impacted by this law (HB24-1362). ♦ Food trucks that operate within multiple jurisdictions across the state must obtain a food safety license from the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, which will be recognized in all local government

jurisdictions, except the City and County of Denver, which has its own rules and license requirements.

(HB25-1295).

Ordinance 2025-O-03 amended the city’s land development code on the topic of “sliding scale compliance requirements,” the purpose of which is to “offer flexibility to property owners and developers (by) encouraging incremental and proportional site compliance” with some aspects of the land development code. The objective is to make sure overly strict enforcement of these rules does not prevent reasonable development and redevelopment. To accomplish that, this program authorizes city staff to permit implementation of some requirements on a sliding scale, rather than all at once.

Ordinance 2025-O-04 was passed to simplify the approval process for development on city-owned land, bypassing certain steps required for approval of development on private property.

Ordinance 2025-O-05 added a new standard for regulating commercial lodging facilities that rent individual rooms for temporary occupancy on a short-term basis. Some of these facilities have been the source of an excessive number of calls for service to local law enforcement. Under this new ordinance, effective January 1, 2026, the accumulation of

a defined number of calls for service to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, based on ratios determined by the number of rental rooms/units in the facility, may impede these facilities from being able to renew their annual licenses to operate when they come up for renewal.

In June, an overlay district within the land development code, for Midtown Centennial, was adopted to promote high-quality development and redevelopment.

Midtown Centennial, which encompasses the area between S. Yosemite St. and S. Havana St. (west to east) and E. Arapahoe Rd. and E. County Line Rd. (north to

south), centered around major regional assets, including the Dry Creek Light Rail Station, I-25, Centennial Airport and an emerging entertainment district, “is intended to be a meaningful place of activity that builds off of the area’s major transportation infrastructure to operate as a connected core, with a series of compact and walkable environments with complementary development surrounding those nodes of activity.”

Also, during 2025, there were three significant rezonings approved by the City, changing properties from Business Park zoning to Employment Center-Mixed Use zoning. They are located at 9000 E. Nichols Avenue, 7877 S. Chester Street, and 6901 E. Havana Street. The Havana Street property contained a vacant 130,000-square-foot office

residential construction.

As the year came to an end, the council adopted a Fourth Amendment to the Jones District Regulating Plan for the approximately 44-acre Joned District property north of IKEA, adjacent to the Dry Creek Light Rail station. That amendment allowed more residential construction ahead of anticipated commercial development that had been expected to occur earlier but did not.

During the city council hearing on December 2 on this matter, concerns were raised about Xcel Energy being able to deliver service to portions of the development, despite earlier assurances that they had provided. City council took those concerns under advisement.

How do you legally transfer ownership of firearms of a deceased person?

When you are handling a deceased person’s final affairs, it is possible that you may encounter one or more firearms owned by the decedent at the time of death. Such firearms may include rifles, revolvers and standard shotguns that are obviously hunting firearms.

Others may be military-style firearms with pistol grips and mounting rails. Some firearms may have a selector switch near the trigger. What is the best way to deal with such firearms?

1. Determine who has legal authority to handle the firearms.

You should first determine if the deceased person had a will or trust which nominates or appoints someone to be in charge of the decedent’s estate. If such documents exist, obtain them and determine who is nominated as the Personal Representative, or appointed as the trustee, or successor trustee of the trust.

You should then contact that person to advise them about the firearms, for them to take appropriate steps to obtain and safeguard the firearms.

2. Determine how the firearms are owned.

3. Make arrangements to properly secure the firearms.

The person nominated in the estate documents should determine whether ownership of the firearms has been transferred to the trust by the one making the trust, or are owned only in the name of the deceased person. In estate plans created under a trust, the one making the trust typically signs an assignment of personal property that transfers ownership of such property,

Particularly where the firearms are in an unoccupied house, and are not already stored in a strong gun safe that cannot be carried away, you should make appropriate arrangements to secure them as soon as possible. A better option is to place the guns in the custody of an individual or entity that holds a Federal Firearms License until it can be determined whether and how to distribute the firearms to the heirs or beneficiaries.

Individuals with a Federal Firearms License can legally take possession of a wide variety of firearms, including guns that are not typical hunting firearms, such as machine guns and short barrel rifles and shotguns. Such licensees have the proper authority to possess the guns and perform necessary background checks before any transfer.

Greg Lopez Announces Independent Run for Governor of Colorado Declines Republican Primary, Will Appear on November Ballot as Unaffiliated Candidate Greg Lopez announced that he will run for Governor of Colorado as an Unaffiliated candidate, choosing to bypass the Republican primary and take his message directly to voters in the November general election. Lopez, a former Congressman and mayor/city manager, small business owner, and longtime public servant, said the decision reflects a commitment to governing based on results—not party politics.

“Colorado deserves a Governor who answers to the people, not to party leadership, national talking points, or political machines,” Lopez said.

“I am not changing my values. I am staying true to who I’ve always been. I am simply changing who I answer to.”

Lopez will not appear on the June 2026 Republican pri-

mary ballot and will instead take the necessary steps to qualify for the November general election as an Unaffiliated candidate.

Why Unaffiliated — Why Now

Unaffiliated voters now represent the largest share of Colorado’s electorate, and Lo-

pez said too many Coloradans feel politically homeless.

“Reasonable Democrats feel unheard. Republicans feel frustrated and hopeless. And unaffiliated voters are often taken for granted,” Lopez said. “Colorado should never be forced to choose between two parties when most voters don’t belong to either.” Lopez emphasized that his decision was not about rejecting Republicans but about rejecting a system that prioritizes division over solutions. “I didn’t leave a party,” Lopez said.

“I left a system that rewards loyalty to labels over loyalty to people.”

First elected mayor in 1992, Lopez has served in public office as both a Demo-

crat and a Republican. He said those experiences reinforced his belief that effective leadership requires independence, honesty, and accountability.

“My governing values are simple: people over politics, and do no harm,” Lopez said.

“That means public safety, affordable living, strong schools, thriving small businesses, and a government that remembers who it works for.”

Lopez added that running as an Unaffiliated candidate allows him to work with all individuals and stand up to anyone when Colorado’s best interests are on the line.

individual, the poor earned a fair wage and earned that wage through work. This is the moral order. Capitalism has helped more people than any government entity.

The grand experiment of our founding has only been in existence for 249 years and already we face the demise of our Republic. Some say that this is a failure of Capitalism, I’d say that we have not had a Capitalist economy for well over 100 years. We have an economy distorted by the very entity the Socialists want to rely on, the government.

Dr Brian Wesbury, Chief Economist of First Trust sums it up perfectly: “Governments (fed, state and local) plus the cost of regulation take 51% of our GDP. If we only get to take home 49% of what we produce no wonder living standards are declining.”

When our government takes 51% of our income through taxes, fees and confiscation, that government has grown too powerful.

If we believe in building up the poor so they reach some equitable distribution of resources, we have the greatest map charting our way: a Republic whose government is controlled by the Constitution.

cess and failure is individual liberty or, how controlled is the governing entity. The question to ask is how do we establish a government to protect the rights of the individual without allowing that very government to overpower the individual?

Let’s say it a different way.

If we believe that the poorest should be given the opportunity to succeed, then what can we do to help? Enforcing another government-based rule, law or program is the antithesis of individual freedom.

We must promote a free society (free of government excess) built on ethics and the rule of law. As Jefferson reveals in the Declaration, the keystone of our Constitution, the individual is endowed by the Creator, with life, liberty and ownership. And no central-controlling entity should be allowed to take from its citizens. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator, with certain inalienable rights: Life, Liberty and Ownership of Property.”

We must go back to Capitalism which our nation hasn’t enjoyed for over 100 years. Capitalism is defined by the term fair value (trade): a willing buyer, a willing seller, agreeing on a transaction

and a price, free of outside coercion. This last phrase is critical. It means that the two individuals in a transaction are free to chose They set the market, not some regulatory agency.

Capitalism allows the poorest to work ethically and retain what they earn so they can determine fair value and own property at their own discretion. Individual rights cannot exist in the presence of an entity that takes life, liberty and property on a whim through taxes, regulation, debt and spending.

Therefore, our own government must be held accountable to the rule of law, the Constitution. This will be painful for the people who depend on the government for employment and welfare. It will be liberating for the rest of us.

More importantly, Capitalism and Individual freedom from tyranny will liberate our children for generations to come. Do we take successful people down or build good people up through freedom?

I vote for the latter.
