It never ceases to amaze us that so many people in Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and surrounds squeeze so much into their lives.

There are many people featured in this month’s magazine - writers, locals and more - who do just that, much to the benefit of our community.

This month’s shining example of a life well lived is Tony Koop, who passed away at the start of January. Tony spent seven years on the board and as president of Lane Cove Community Aid (now Sydney Community Services), but this was only one of his many interests, and ways to give back to the community.

You can read his wife Gabrielle’s account of his life on pages 14 and 15.

news It’s raining milestones at the UTS North Sydney Bears The UTS North Sydney Bears first grade team are still in the hunt for a finals birth despite a rain affected draw against Sutherland in the first two day game of the competition. With four games remaining in the regular season, the Bears are placed eighth on 38 points, just one win behind sixth placed Sydney Cricket Club.

The highlight of the Sutherland game played over the pre Valentines’ Day weekend was a third century to champion batsman Justin Avendano who scored 127 runs. Avendano has now scored 564 runs at an average of 70 and is placed fourth highest on run aggregate for the competition.

Justin’s prowess has been noted with an incredible 100 runs not out from just 53 balls in the T20 Cup in December last year. Overall, Justin has over 5000 first grade runs for UTS North Sydney.

There are milestones a plenty at the club. The leading wicket taker for the Bears in first grade is fast bowler, Matt Alexander with 19 wickets at an average of 28. Matt passed 100 wickets for the club just prior to Christmas last year. His opening partner James Campbell achieved the milestone of 250 first grade wickets for the club at around the same time. Other first graders to achieve milestones have been all rounder, Olly Knight and wicket keeper batsman, Aiden Bariol. They have both recently passed 1000 runs for the club.

In the lower grades Harrison May claimed his 100th wicket for the club in Round 11. Third grade captain, Cameron New and 16 year old Hamish Reynolds have both reached 1000 runs for the club. Harrison has 16 wickets at an average of 24 and sits 10th on the in third grade bowling aggregates. His brother Fletcher May has 20 wickets at an average of 19 and is the fifth best bowler on aggregates in second grade this year. In fifth grade, Callum Fursman has made a big impact for the club with 15 wickets at an average of 11 and is also placed fifth on the bowling aggregates for that grade.

A most notable milestone is the feat of club President, Patrick Lindsey who has just passed 350 wickets for the club with his left arm tweakers.

Robbie Aitken and James Campbell are the only current players who have accumulated more wickets than Pat. Pat also sits in third place with 20 wickets at an average of 9 in the fourth grade aggregates.

In the womens’ section of the club 15 year old Grace Keating is one to watch over the coming weeks with

755 runs for North Sydney and 231 runs for the Gordon / North Sydney combined second grade side, adding to 986 total club runs for the season.

Grace scored her maiden century, (105 not out) for the club last round and it was a special moment being the first ever century for a female cricketer at the Bears.

As well as the first grade boys, the third and fourth grade teams are also just one win outside the top six in very congested competitions.

Despite a couple of close losses to top four teams, our fifth grade side is clinging onto the fourth spot making upcoming games against Faifield-Liverpool, Parramatta and Hawksbury vital to all of our teams’ chances.

The next few weeks at North Sydney oval are going to be exciting.

Join the LC Tennis Club

The Lane Cove History Prize is open again for 2022

Lane Cove West Tennis Club is looking for new members to join its club that plays on a Saturday afternoon between 12-5pm.

Experienced players who are able to commit to regular (not every) Saturday afternoons are welcome to come along and try out any Saturday during those hours.

There are three synthetic grass courts (which dry quickly after rain), a main clubhouse, a BBQ and friendly members.

The club is located in Blackman Park on Lloyd Rees Drive. Members can play on public holiday afternoons as well. There is a social round robin competition once a year.

The new normal in travel Another month on and the confidence to travel is building momentum. As a voracious consumer of print media, it warms my heart to see the uplift in travel advertising. The travel supplement has moved from 8 to 20 pages and must surely soon hit 32. And articles from some of our fabulous Australian journalists are redressing the balance in favour of home-grown reports. I’m excited and so should you be. By Adrienne Witteman.

here are other signs of a new spring. Sweden and Denmark have removed almost all restrictions, Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands have also opened up and Britain will have followed suit by the time the March TVO is published.

Europe is most definitely open.

Australia too has approved RATs, as a substitute for PCR tests when returning from overseas and today sees the end of QR checkins in most places. We are segueing back into “normal”. Yet what is normal now?

If you have been looking at flights for overseas travel, you’ll have noticed that there has been an increase in prices overall. While airlines have been hit very hard by Covid and thus it would be very tempting to gouge the market, the reasons are more nuanced. Quite simply there is more demand than supply – with capacity nowhere near at 2019 levels it’s a fine line between selling too cheap and selling at a price that is affordably fair.

And there’s a price to pay for those more flexible booking conditions.

Still in the airspace, we’ve noticed an uptick in people upgrading from economy to premium, and from premium to business. It seems that more personal space is attractive to everyone so premium seats are definitely more expensive.

Of course you can get plenty of personal space on a cruise ship, and

much of it outdoors in the fresh air.

Sadly, the Australian government is slow to be convinced. The travel industry is justifiably frustrated that 7M+ people have now cruised overseas, safely, with a very few exceptions and on ships, big and small. Yet that fact falls on deaf ears in Australian state and federal jurisdictions. Let me ask you: Where would you feel safest – dining in a restaurant or staying in a hotel amidst vaxxed and unvaxxed guests, or on a ship where vaccination is mandatory and testing occurs on an ongoing basis?

Those confident to cruise (and we have many such clients) are enjoying fabulous deals, often including reduced rates for business class travel. Thankfully not all of the travel landscape has increased in price!

The IATA pass, is now functional and, theoretically at least, you can now travel worldwide with one digital document recognised by all airlines and immigration authorities. I look forward to testing its efficacy as I travel to Europe and the USA later this month. As a non-techno guru, I admit to being somewhat worried and will still be carrying printed copies of everything!

The “new normal” encompasses the travel agency network and here too there are surprises for clients. The major airlines flying into Australia –

Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Cathay – and several others, have announced they are moving to a 0% - 1% commission for airline tickets, effective 2nd or 3rd or 4th quarter 2020.. 1% of a $2000 ticket to Europe, means $11-$13 remuneration once non-commissionable taxes are extracted.

So don’t be surprised when your agent requests an upfront fee for providing quotes and/or a booking fee. Working for free was never sustainable – under more taxing market conditions it is even less so. The last 2 years have taken a huge toll on every agency’s financial viability and none of us can afford to give away time for free, to those who might be “just thinking” about going away and wanting a couple of quotes or have no intention of booking but want to glean some ideas, expertise and knowledge for nix.

All this is happening at a time when there are fewer experienced agents to assist clients, and increased demand for those services. It is indeed a whole new, and more complex travel world out there but rest assured we can make it comfortable still for you.

The winter Olympics have ended, leaving us with that vague sense we too could take up bobsleighing, if only we could sprint, had quad muscles the size of rocket launchers and lived in a cold climate (isn’t it just like a big boy version of billy carting?)

Whether or not you’re a fan there’s something quite restful about watching sports you’ve no usual interest in.

It’s easy enough to race out, tennis racket in hand, during the Australian Open (‘look at me I’m just like Ash Barty!’) but not so simple to ski-jump over one hundred metres at speeds topping 95km per hour. And as for the Skeleton (doom-ridden name not helping), shooting through a tube of ice on a tea-tray on skates is not my idea of fun.

Curling, on the other hand, seems suspiciously easy, like a chilly version of lawn bowls (and surely all that ice sweeping is just cheating?)

As for keeping up with the complicated scoring systems, you can forget it. If you remember watching Torvill and Dean’s mesmerising all sixes Bolero performance – the top possible score–I’m here to tell you things have moved on. No wonder the ice dancing was making no sense.

There’s a cumulative technical score where judges mark the jumps and twirls, then that gets multiplied by some sort of factor, including the grade of execution and skating ability. One triple pike axle looks the same as the next in my book, but then I’m not a judge. Which is just as well, as judges are culpable and corruptible. Hence the change to today’s scoring system, brought about from the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. A Canadian pair were second to the Russians, despite a flawless performance versus an error riddled one.

We non-judges might not know the first thing about scoring ice skating, but if someone falls over a lot and the next person doesn’t, that seems pretty clear. It turned out that some judges were less than unbiased, trading off scores and deductions with each other for their compatriot competitors in other events.

fifteen degrees or less, that some events were in the balance. The cross-country skiers were on notice – they cancel the event at sub twenty as the athletes can’t get enough oxygen into their lungs. They all consistently collapse over the finishing line in a crumpled heap, not dissimilar to my Year Eight attempts at (land based) crosscountry running. It certainly was exhausting watching them. The commentators were so frozen they were slurring.

One Norwegian skier, coming off the back of two weeks isolating after a positive Covid test, was alas not at his best. After a promising start to his multi-discipline event, he took a wrong turn – easy to do in a blizzard - and dropped from first to eighth place.

‘My body is not working,’ he said afterwards, and who can blame him in minus twenty-degrees. My old battered mini in England conked out at anything under minus ten.

At least he could use Covid and the temperature as excuses, unlike the 1992 Russian four-man bobsled team.

Pusher Three slipped and scrambled to get in, finally making it in position two, facing backwards. Since there’s only one pilot and the other pushers are there solely to push and jump in, it counts as a definite fail.

Maybe I’ll take up a new winter sport. Safe from the sanctuary of my couch, of course. Macquarie ice rink is just up the road and even I can slide around on my chest if that’s all it takes.

interview: Michael Ouzas

Hunters Hill lawyer-turnedwriter Michael Ouzas is hitting the big time in LA. He still misses home though….

 You grew up in Hunters Hill and went to school there. What are your memories like from that time?

The friends I made at Hunters Hill Public School over 20 years ago are still some of my best friends today.

Growing up with them in Hunters Hill was a dream. I remember endless summers of tennis down by the Lane Cove river, and playing football for the All Saints. We lost almost every game and had to rotate the goalie every week because they were inevitably reduced to tears, but we all loved it.

I’ve lived with those same friends and travelled the world with them. I feel very lucky to have met them.  You’ve lived overseas for the past two and a half years. What do you miss most about home?

The people. My friends and family, especially my mum. Sorry to my sister if she’s reading this. I keep in contact with everyone, but two Zoom Christmases is more than enough. I also miss the greenery. After living on the edge of a desert for two and a half years, you really start to appreciate a good tree. The food, too. I miss that a lot. Can you tell I’m homesick?

 You’ve worked as a waiter, a tipstaff to a Supreme Court judge, a lawyer, and a screenwriter in Hollywood. Are there any jobs I’m missing?

I was a pizza delivery boy for Chelso’s (now Lipari Pizza Bar) in Hunters Hill for years. I was paid to drive around while listening to the rugby on the radio. Not the worst job in the world.

 Why did you decide to leave the law and pursue a career in Hollywood?

The law felt like more of a chore than a challenge. I wasn’t satisfied making rich companies richer. On the other hand, creating things has always given me energy. As a kid, I was always drawing or painting or writing mediocre songs and singing them even more mediocrely - I’m sure my parents regretted buying me that guitar. So, when the opportunity came along to follow my dream in the US, I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t take the plunge.

 What drew you to writing for TV and film in particular?

I get bored easily. The moment I know I can do something for sure, it’s no longer interesting to me. It’s probably a symptom of a deeper disorder which will come out in my writing at some point. Writing is like a puzzle that rearranges itself with every new story. Something that works in one story won’t necessarily work in the next one, so you have to constantly adapt to what each story requires. The possibilities are endless.  When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

On my eighth birthday, my aunt gave me a copy of The Hobbit. For years, I wrote poor imitations of it. Adventure stories which were epic to me at the time but were really only about eight

pages long. I had a poetry phase as a moody teenager, too, before moving onto writing films at uni. So I guess I’ve always been writing, it just wasn’t until later that I realised writing was something you could do for a living. It still feels like a dream that someone’s paying me to make up stories all day.  Your screenplay Third Man won the Screencraft Drama Competition and was a finalist in the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship. Tell us about the story.

Third Man is about a young soldier in World War I who has to choose between loyalty to his country and the person he loves. It’s an unsanitised portrayal of war, but I hope that readers also take from it a sense of hope that love can blossom in even the direst situation.

 You’re writing on the upcoming TV series Beacon 23. What can you tell us about it?

I feel so lucky to be a part of this incredible show. It’s a sci-fi thriller set on a beacon, which is basically a galactic lighthouse, hundreds of years in the future. It’s based on the book by Hugh Howey and we have an all-star cast led by Lena Headey (who played Cersei in Game of Thrones). The writing team is truly legendary as well. I can’t wait for people to see it!  Do you have any plans to return to Australia in the near future?

I’m actually coming back this month for the first time in over two years. I can already tell it’s going to be very emotional being back home. The fear is that everything has changed without me, but I find the important things tend to stay the same.

Anthony John (Tony) Koop 2 AUGUST, 1941 - 8 JANUARY, 2022 Tony Koop served on the board and as president of Lane Cove Community Aid (now Sydney Community Services) for seven years. Tony passed away at the beginning of January. Here his wife Gabrielle pays tribute to her husband and a friend of many in Lane Cove.

ony was born in Coogee, the first child of Mary and John Koop and brother of Ann, Rosemary and Gerard. His childhood was spent at Rosebery and he often spoke fondly of family holidays with grandparents at Penrith. His first recollections were of the family home at Rosebery - standing on a wooden bench in the backyard watching fighter planes fly to and from Mascot Airport and of the milkman and his horse and cart.

Tony’s early schooling was at St Joseph’s at Rosebery and later he attended Marcellin College, Randwick.

By the time he finished high school he had been a sporting house captain, a prefect, an under officer in the cadets, and represented the school in football, cricket and athletics. Out of school, he belonged to the Police Boys Club and was a member of the Botany Harriers Athletics Club.

Tony went to Teachers College in Bathurst in 1960 to train as a high school maths teacher. This was his first time living away from home and it made a deep impression on him.

He loved life at college and country living. He stayed in touch with friends from teachers college and, later in life, became an active member of the alumni association.

Of course, Tony’s teaching career wasn’t the start of his working life. He had a great capacity for work and this was evident while he was still a boy. At the age of 10, he was a paper boy often selling papers as people got on and off trams at the Rosebery Terminus.

When he was 13, he had a Saturday 14 TVO

morning job at the Coles city store on Oxford Street and an after school job at Flemings packing shelves.

Then followed a long list of part time holiday jobs ranging from working at the Coca Cola factories in Alexandria and Kingsgrove, to assembly line jobs and caddying at what is now the Australian Golf Club.

Tony’s first teaching appointment was at Cabramatta High - quite a trip every day from Rosebery driving his father’s FJ Holden. At the same time he enrolled at the University of Sydney in an arts degree majoring in maths. He graduated and went on to complete a masters degree at Macquarie University in 1975 and a PhD at Ohio State University in 1980.

In his third year of teaching, Tony transferred to the Correspondence School at Chippendale which was close to Sydney University and this made it much easier to attend uni at night. A move to Cleveland Street Boys High School in Surry Hills followed and he was promoted to maths master at East Hills Girls a few years later. A good school apparently despite the fact that his first headmistress had some trouble accepting the shorts and long socks he wore to work.

During his 10 years as a teacher Tony married and had two children, Ann-Maree and David. He met his first wife, Jan, while they were both working at a National Fitness Camp, and they were married in May, 1965.

He spent numerous school holidays as a counsellor and later, as a director of these camps.

In 1972, after 10 years high school teaching, he took up a position as a lecturer in Teacher Education at Macquarie University. For the next 28 years, Tony remained at Macquarie.

He retired on his 59th birthday. He finished his academic career as Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Education having supervised the research of over 100 postgraduate students including ten at doctoral level. His students over the years came, not only from teaching, but from a wide range of professions and he was very proud on being made an Honorary Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing in 1996 in recognition of his contribution to nursing education.

In 1987, Tony and I married. He gained three step-daughters, Camille, Louise and Amy and, along with Mikki the cat, we lived in Lane Cove for 22 years.

He might have retired from Macquarie but Tony never really slowed down. After a short break, he got busy and spent the next 10 years or so consulting and teaching for registered training organisations. He was also responsible for overseeing the registration and accreditation of the Kent Institute as a higher education provider and served for several years as the Chair of the Academic Board of Kent Institute.

In 2003, we bought a 300 acre beef cattle farm at Tumbarumba.

The 15 years we spent on the farm were among the happiest of Tony’s retirement. He soon became

proficient at fencing, cattle work, the never ending battle with weeds and checking the rain gauge. The whole family enjoyed great times on the farm and exploring the surrounding countryside. We were fortunate to sell the farm just a year before the terrible fires tore through the Ournie Valley.

We then moved to our apartment in Greenwich for a quieter life.

Anyone who knew Tony, knew about his love of sport. In his earlier years he played cricket, football, tennis and squash. He enjoyed athletics and water skiing. At teachers college, he was a member of the College Rugby Union team which played in the Central West Rugby competition. They were the proud winners of the competition in 1961.

Later in life, he enjoyed tennis (playing at the Beecroft courts on Tuesday night with his good friends for over 20 years), rowing, swimming and cycling. In his 70s he joined the YMCA - the youthfully mature cycling associates - and enjoyed cycling all over Sydney and further afield.

During the 1990s and early noughties had been a member of the North Shore Rowing Club at Longueville and loved early morning rowing on the Lane Cove River.

I asked Tony a few years ago which sport he enjoyed most and his answer surprised me. I was expecting football or tennis but, no, ‘athletics’ was his answer. He had been a good runner as a young man and said there was nothing like the exhilaration of running. He also added that rowing was a wonderful sport and loved being out on the water early in the morning.

Travel was another of Tony’s interests. He and Jan, Ann-Maree and David travelled to Western Samoa and

Tonga where Tony and colleagues from Macquarie University worked with educators there developing their own school curricula. Later, they lived in the US when Tony undertook further study. In 1986, Tony and David visited Ann-Maree while she was studying in Switzerland.

My first trip overseas was with Tony on our honeymoon in 1987. Travelling with Tony was always exciting and fun. We had some wonderful times together.

Tony led a full and interesting life.

He had many good memories and good friends.

Work was important but so were family and friendships. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and surrounded himself with photos of them in his study. He had six grandchildren - Jackson, Benjamin, James, Megan, Alice and Andrew - and loved spending time with them, giving them advice and even tutoring them, over the years, in maths and physics.

He had many friends and loved meeting up with them. A serious man for sure but one who also liked a laugh.

He had a quirky sense of humour that took me years to understand but he didn’t mind people having a laugh at his expense either. He loved meeting Marcellin Old Boys for lunch, going on cycling expeditions and working with and going on outings with members of the Alumni Association and with other close friends and relatives.

He gave back to the community and received a Citizenship Award in recognition of his contribution to Lane Cove Community Aid Service as Board Member and President over seven years. He also enjoyed his role as chair of the strata committee where we live.

For many years Tony had been stoic in facing several serious and confronting health conditions. In 2004, he became ill with cardio myopathy. In 2006, at an appointment with his GP he found he had bowel cancer, kidney cancer and an abdominal aortic aneurysm. After surgery and chemotherapy, Tony’s health remained stable for about ten years but then began to deteriorate in 2018. He showed great courage in facing his final illness.

The day before he died, he resigned by video link as assistant treasurer of his alumni association.

Not long afterwards, he received an SMS from one of the committee members. I would like to read you part of it as it seems to sum up so much about friendship.

“When I think about it we’ve known each other for 60 years now and have popped up into each other’s lives at infrequent intervals but it’s always been a happy and purposeful association with lots of fond memories of college days. Do you remember “The Review” when we were in some kind of dance group, and of course the football bus trips and the dances ...the college food...? All so long ago, but such sweet memories”.

Finding Hope Ash Barty’s return to tennis and subsequent Australian Open victory was inspirational! As a regular tennis player, I am deeply impressed with the upbeat, gracious, young woman who was able to win from 1-5 down in the Final. I was keen to learn more – not only to win at tennis – but to understand what drives such self-belief in her. An interview with her mindset coach, Ben Crowe, on ABC’s Conversations provided that opportunity.

‘Crowie’ suggests that Ash’s transformation began when she could answer the basic questions: ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What do I want?’ Intentional, positive re-framing of our lives from our earliest memories, provides a hopeful basis on which to build. Finding hope amidst today’s constant bad news also requires us to focus beyond ourselves. How can we be change agents to counter the bad news? Even performing small actions to improve a difficult situation gives us hope.

Climate change is an enormous issue where we can feel powerless to make a difference. Yet, concerned people find hope by deliberately consuming less, recycling more and maybe growing their own vegetables. Banding together with fellow activists, who support each other and speak with a common voice, also produces hope for a better future.

Hope is also found in looking beyond the present to a higher reality. A faith community can provide multiple dimensions of hope at once. Our new worship community, Sacred Space, encourages encounter with God in a natural environment, amidst an inclusive, supportive community. It’s a place to know and be known at a deeper level. Reconnecting Communities Following two years dominated by lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the start of 2022 has brought with it the opportunity to bring people together again.

New Growth at Hughes Park Community Garden

We are passionate about providing space for organic kitchen-gardening and nurturing our local pollinator networks

Are you a kitchen-garden green-thumb or want to be? Are you looking for physical community and a space to learn how grow your own organic fruit, herbs, or vegetables?

H

ughes Park Community Garden (HPCG) is memberrun and supported by Lane Cove Council as the only community garden in the Lane Cove Cammeraygal region to date. Located in Lane Cove West on Waterview Drive, HPCG is a fenced garden and shares the beautiful Hughes Park area with green picnic spaces, playground, exercise areas, community centre, and braille path, nestled between the medium-rise apartment blocks on the NorthWestern edges of Burns Bay. As hobby gardeners, at HPCG we are passionate about providing space for organic kitchen-gardening and nurturing our local pollinator networks. Our membership come from diverse backgrounds and demographics, all are welcome. Time in the garden is an opportunity to learn from the experience of fellow gardeners, provides a place to connect with the seasonality of local flora and fauna, and we almost always take home seasonal organically grown produce after working in the garden.

As a newer development in the Lane Cove area, the community garden space was established by an independent not-for-profit organisation when the Hughes Park section of the Waterview Drive development was completed around seven years ago. Following the end of their five-year lease, the garden was handed back to Lane Cove Council, prompting the gardeners to apply to the council to continue the garden, and establish as our own not-for-profit: Hughes Park Community Garden. The garden membership is reviving after an extended dormant period during the COVID-19 lockdowns of the last two years. Especially given the prolific rainy season over the 20 TVO

last year, there is much work to be done in the garden.

Apart from general maintenance, we have many exciting plans for the HPCG such as increasing accessibility of the garden facilities, such as wheel-chair friendly paths, and re-installing a native (stingless) Sugarbag bee colony.

Our annual membership fee is $75 and requires monthly physical contributions to maintain the garden as well as assisting with the running of the organisation. If you are interested in joining us, we would love to hear from you via email, and invite interested gardeners to join us for a site-induction during our working-bees- an opportunity to work together to maintain the garden, as well as chat about all things garden-related over a cuppa.

Though we are not yet a registered charity, as a not-forprofit organisation we welcome sponsorship, donations, and volunteers to help our community garden to flourish.

I could also whinge loudly about my first-world problems and bang on about some guy who irritated me at the shops.

After several years of this unchecked toxicity, my whiney brain was off the leash, snowballing me into a person I didn’t want to be.

Then, new neighbours moved in. New, younger neighbours with fully functioning ears. Suddenly, my ranting had an audience. This worried me. It was time to change my filter-free ways.

Much to the relief of the loved ones I lived with, I set to work adjusting my interactions with them. Less yelling, more listening. More laughing, less grumbling. Then, as if like magic… change happened.

Call it guilt, call it being easily embarrassed, the bottom line is I’m much more content when I’m mindful of the neighbours listening in.

I reckon our neighbours know us better than our own families. They hear the fights, the tantrums, and the dummy spits when things don’t go our way. They know what peeves us and what pleases us.

Sure, living cheek by jowl can be claustrophobic at times, but perhaps a built-up neighbourhood provides us with an opportunity to live by a code we aspire to. *Real name withheld (he knows who he is!)

February Council Meeting: Council’s first Ordinary Council Meeting of the year was held on Monday 21 February.

At this meeting there was discussion of changes to the Code of Meeting Practice – you can view the proposed changes and provide feedback by visiting www.lanecove. nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay.

Outdoor Dining Trial: Last month we were able to trial the temporary conversion of two car parking spaces on Longueville Road to extend the dining option for two local restaurants.

The parking spaces are converted on a Friday afternoon and are reinstated on the Monday morning providing more room to dine over the weekend.

Council has applied for funding for an expanded trial with the outcome being known in the coming months. The current trial will run until end of March

Village Night Lights: Did you catch a glimpse of some of Council's recent evening activations which saw Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios, Lane Cove Library, Lane Cove Plaza and The Canopy illuminated across an impressive 10 day period? There was also plenty happening to accompany the lights including free movies, swing dancing, live sport, games in the Plaza and the rescheduled lion dance.

Reader’s question: “Most of my teeth are loose and I’ve lost a lot of bone around them. I’ve been told I can only have a denture, but are there any other options?”

Dr See says: Fantastic question. Severe bone loss around teeth is difficult to treat and often you may need to start thinking about life after losing those teeth. Losing a lot of teeth can impact function, aesthetics and general wellbeing because the diet is often limited from a nutritious diet to a soft, mushy diet.

HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT? Dr Andrew See has dedicated the last 19 years to Aesthetic Dentistry and has unique qualifications in cosmetic dentistry and rehabilitation.

Dentures have been around since 700 BC! It is definitely an option to replace missing teeth and one that is still often used as a temporary option. Modern dental implants as we know it is nothing new as the first one placed was in 1965. “I love a sunburnt country.” Many would know this classic line of poetry from Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country, likely one of the best-known poems in Australian history, written around 1904. More than a century later her words still ring true. In Australia, our skin can get sunburnt in as little 11 minutes on a fine sunny day.

ur sun has helped give us the record of having the highest rates of skin cancer, particularly melanoma (the most aggressive skin cancer type) in the world.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, skin cancers account for the largest number of cancers (80%) diagnosed in Australia each year. Melanoma is estimated to be the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2021, and is the commonest skin cancer in those aged 20-40 years. At least 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70.

So why does Australia hold the crown of skin cancer capital of the world?

There are a number of reasons. It’s often mistakenly blamed on average temperature. Our sun does play a significant factor but not for the reason that we might think.

What we see is the sun’s visible light, and what we feel (heat and temperature) is the sun’s infra-red radiation. But the real reason why the sun can be so deadly is that it is specifically the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from exposure that is linked to sunburn and at least 95% of our skin cancers. Australia has one of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world. UV radiation levels are affected by a number of factors including geographic location, altitude, time of day, time of year and cloud cover. UV radiation is higher in summer compared

to winter and thick cloud is a good filter. UV radiation can be high even on cool overcast days. And this is the key: UV radiation CANNOT be seen or felt. We cannot simply rely on clear skies or high temperatures to help us decide whether we need sun protection. So how can we tell when our sun exposure is getting dangerous?

• Have regular doctor skin checks. All adults should have one every 12-18 months. Make a habit of doing a personal skin check of your body every three months. Look for new skin lesions or changes in existing ones, especially colour and shape. A bleeding lesion is not a reliable sign of cancer. Hair growth in a skin cancer lesion is a myth.

Australia is the best country to live in, but it can come at a price. Enjoy the sun but look after yourself when under it.

Ready for Easter and Autumn outdoor adventuring, keep this recipe on file for winter camping and skiing trips. It’s egg-free, and the butter can be substituted equal quantity for coconut oil for a vegan recipe. **Use gluten-free oats for a gluten-free version.

SLICE INGREDIENTS 1 cup Sesame seeds 1 cup Slivered Almonds 1 cup Chopped Pecans 4 cups Rolled oats 1 cup Pine nuts 1 cup Pumpkin seeds 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup Currants 1 cup Cranberries 1 cup Diced Apricots 1 cup Diced Dried Figs Favorite Jam 500g jar ½ cup Honey 250g Butter 1 whole vanilla bean - scrape the seeds out 4 tablespoons Cinnamon METHOD • Preheat the oven to 160 degrees fan force..

• Combine dry ingredients in a big bowl.

• Melt butter in a saucepan or microwave on till melted then add honey, jam, vanilla seeds and cinnamon. Mix thoroughly then remove from heat.

• Combine wet ingredients with processed dried ingredients.

Place mixtures in a baking paper-lined baking tin.

• Lay another piece of baking paper down over the top and roll over to level out & compress the mixture.

Get your oven timer or phone out and put an alarm on for cooking - this is vital.

POMEGRANATE PICKLED ONIONS This quick pickled onion recipe is ready in 10 minutes, and, keeps for over a month. Sweet & perky, no cooking needed!

Keeps in the fridge, for up to a month.

• Peel and slice 6 red onions - along the ribs, from base to tip (as opposed to rounds). add to a medium-sized bowl, cover with cold water and gently break apart with your hands. Once all the slices are separated, drain well and pat dry, returning to the bowl.

• Bake it for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. After cooling, but warm enough to handle, slide out onto a chopping board, and slice through with a large knife into small 1 inch by 2-inch pieces. Store in an airtight container in the fridge layered with greaseproof paper. Lasts 2 weeks in the fridge. To freeze, wrap pieces individually in greaseproof, and store in an airtight container. **Some oats are not gluten-free due to processing and manufacturing. *Stay close to the oven, because if this burns, it’s a very expensive piece of coal. *Every oven is different, so keep close and check every 5 minutes after about 15 minutes.

• Pour over 500ml of pomegranate molasses, add 2 teaspoons of sea salt, 1 teaspoon of sumac, 1/2 a teaspoon of chili flakes, and the zest & juice from 2 limes.

• Have a large glass jar (about 1 litre) cleaned and ready with a matching lid.

• Pour the well-mixed onions & syrup into the jar and chill.

Perfect mixed into a salad, sprinkled over a pizza, baked into a cheese tart, a small bowl to join with lamb curry. Lovely layered with ripe tomatoes as a salad, and my favourite, onto a fresh bread roll with goats cheese & rocket.

Outside her home, Nic lives a “normal” life: she holds down a job, presents a well-kept facade to the world, babysits local children and meets her niece weekly for lunch. But Nic is a hoarder and her home is filled to the brim with all the items she has diligently collected and stored over the years. Nic has filled her life and her home with “love objects”. These are items judged by others to be “junk” and “clutter” but, to Nic, they are imbued with emotional connection.

The catalyst for action is that Nic suffers a fall in her home and is hospitalised. It is her niece, Lena, who comes to her aid and discovers the extent of her hoarding disorder behind the locked doors of Nic’s home. Twenty-year-old Lena has her own challenges with trying to support herself through university and navigating her way through the minefield of social relationships in the digital world. Lena sets out to “help” her aunt by clearing her clutter, unaware of the potential ramifications to their relationship. When Lena’s brother, Will, travels home from Queensland to help Lena care for their beloved aunt he is damaged, destitute and heartbroken. All together under one roof, they are forced to confront their painful past and the issues in their relationships.

Emily Maguire’s Love Objects is an unflinching but sympathetic portrayal of complex family relationships. It also addresses the issues of sexual consent, the politics of economic status and the social and emotional implications of power. The narrative switches between the perspectives of the three central characters and the challenges that each one is facing in their own lives and in their relationships. Each of them feels trapped by generational poverty and each of them loses control of a critical aspect of their lives. Nevertheless, their family ties are strong, their love is bruised but not broken and they are able to help each other to heal and move forward.

This is a compassionate portrait of mental illness and generational hardship and a beautiful, hopeful depiction of the strength of love in families and its power.

What to do with those palm tree fronds!

I

f you live in or around the Lane Cove, you will be familiar with palm tree fronds that frequently fall(and sometimes come crashing down) from the many different species of Palm trees that grow in our area. Palm fronds, inflorescence’s (the flowering stem) and their pods are rather big, awkward things that won’t fit into a green bin without some serious modification!

Take a second look and you will probably be surprised to notice how beautifully intricate these stems and pods are.

Inflorescence- this is the palm trees flowering stem which contains a great many tiny flowers that then form seeds. The seeds will eventually fall, leaving a seed free stem that will also fall from the tree. This stem and the pod that encases it can be used to make wonderful decorative items for your home and backyard.

Soaking the palm leaves, pods and inflorescence in water for a few hours will soften the normally rigid material, which makes the material supple and easy to reshape. Items such as baskets, light shades and wall hangings can be weaved from this material.

Light shade - This is made by flattening out a softened inflorescence and braiding it (like you would braid hair) to make a flat piece of material.

Both left and right sides are then weaved together to make a round shape. Baskets can also be made using the same technique.

Succulent planter - This looks great as a table centrepiece! Drill a couple of holes in the base of a seed pod for drainage. Brush or spray 2 coats of clear exterior timber varnish over both the interior and exterior of the casing.

This will strengthen the pod and make it waterproof. Once dry, fill with soil and your favourite plants!

Palm leaves also make great kindling for your bbq or firepit!

Wall hangings - Palm inflorescence’s also look fabulous as wall hangings or simply hung off a backyard paling fence to add interest. Fairy lights can also be added to create a little drama!

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Brendan Kelly

Can you describe to us the type of artist you are, and the medium you work in?

I’m an abstract figurative painter who also likes to draw and make things. My work tends to fracture, bend or morph in layers to a point where it sometimes finds new realities or outcomes as an image.

I mostly use acrylic paint because it dries fast, and charcoal to draw with but I also use photo collage, graphite, ink and anything else that helps.

What motivates you to ‘create’?

I tend to work in bursts of interest on a particular theme, which might be something I’m interested in knowing more about, or something I’ve seen while out and about that just caught my attention. I sort of pick things up and mess around with them until I eventually throw them away. It’s a bit like dissecting something until it’s all broken into tiny pieces.

Where did you learn your craft, or is it something you were blessed with?

I was always a very active child, probably too active really and used to drive my mother a bit crazy at times.

She’d grab something at hand, put it in front of me and say, “Here you go, draw this!” and that would buy her a couple of minutes of peace. As an adult I learned all my fracture and layering techniques from a guy named Ron Curran who was from North Sydney. Ron was influenced by Francis Bacon for sure.

Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators?

I’m about to be involved in an exhibition about The Northwood Group of painters (Rees, Wakelin, Santry, Lawrence, Whiteley) which apparently will be exhibited at Macquarie University and The Lane Cove Gallery, so I’d have to say I find Lane Cove and it’s surrounds extremely supportive towards me personally. I was born in Epping and grew up in Marsfield so all my earliest memories are from that area and are a huge influence.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts, and if so, how would that manifest?

Yes. there should be more support, with more training and mentoring programs, more money available for large scale art initiatives in public spaces and a broader range of art in way more varied places. I’d like to see art in unexpected places at unexpected times. Money used to remove street art is a waste of money for one thing, leave the street art alone, it’s free.

How would we go about seeing your works?

It’s always best to see art in the flesh so Brenda Colahan Fine Art in Putney is where you can do that.

What I watched on TV… As we ‘March’ ardently into 2022, it’s time to find out what’s been entertaining resident TV man Stephen Miller over the last month.

Palm Springs (Amazon Prime)

What begins as a goofy rehash of the ‘Groundhog Day’ narrative soon morphs into something a great deal more. It quickly settles into a highly watchable romance of unexpected poignancy. Stuck in a time loop, two wedding guests become romantically involved while living the same day over and over again. Sounds repetitive – which it is – but don’t imagine that that means boring. On the contrary, with a brilliant screenplay and excellent cast, it’s a movie that provides plenty of laughs and genuine heart and soul. ★★★★½ Why you would watch it: It’s quirky and funny. I’d be happy to watch it again.

Why you wouldn’t: You don’t like flight-of-fancy romantic comedies.

Why Women Kill Series 2 (SBS OnDemand or Paramount+)

A frumpy 1940s American housewife who becomes a society diva does seem a reasonably simple plotline compared to series 1’s three simultaneous stories (reviewed last month). But Allison Tolman’s portrayal of Alma is so ‘blooming’ marvellous, complexity and depth of story are still maintained. Add in some great acting, clever writing (“Violence doesn’t bother me… keep that in mind when you tip me.”), beautiful, almost cartoonish cinematography and many fun twists, and you’ll find yourself utterly addicted in no time. Roll on season 3. ★★★★½ Why you would watch it: Anything with Allison Tolman in is worth a shot – she’s incredible.

Why you wouldn’t: You’re not a fan of this soapy style of drama.

From the creator of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, comes Gilded Age, a period drama set in 1880s America.

This was a time of immense economic change with many conflicts between the new way of thinking and the old traditional way. A handful of industrialists (new money) caused a palpable shift in the social order with the establishment (old money). It’s perfectly watchable, and you don’t have to think too hard. Fellowes’s soap opera clarity makes sure of that. ★★★ Why you would watch it: You’re a fan of Downton Abbey or simply want something light where no one dies.

Why you wouldn’t: Cardboard characters, out-of-the-box costumes and obvious movie-set streets.

This against-all-odds daring rescue in 2018 of twelve boys and their coach from deep inside a flooded cave in Northern Thailand quite literally brought the world together. Using never-beforeseen material and exclusive interviews, the directors will keep you on the edge of your seat as they bring alive one of the most perilous and extraordinary rescues in modern times. As the world worked tirelessly for one common good – I couldn’t help but feel very uplifted. If only mankind could operate like this all the time. ★★★★★ Why you should watch it: It’s the most incredible and inspirational story ever captured in a documentary.

Why you wouldn’t: There really is no reason other than you don’t have Disney+.

A talented high school girl’s soccer team are stranded in the American wilderness in 1996 when their plane crashes on the way to a national tournament. Through a dual timeline structure, we meet two versions of the main characters, the teens forced to survive the dark days following the crash (think Lord Of The Flies) and their adult self 26 years on. There’s a lot to Yellowjackets; intrigue, excellent writing, tremendous performances and cool 90s music, which all come together to keep you wanting more. ★★★★ Why you would watch it: This is unsettling, but highly addictive mustsee-TV. Why you wouldn’t: You may find it slow and sometimes far-fetched.

Why no immediate rescue?

Joe Spicer is a champion breeder of kelpies, and his working dogs are in much demand all over Australia. So many farmers are putting away their quad bikes and helicopters and returning to the much more environmental and practical ‘muster dogs’ of old. Joe matched a puppy to five top trainers around the country who then vied for a year to see who could best harness their dog’s natural instinct and intelligence the best. Spoiler alert, all dogs do pretty well, but certainly, there is enough of a difference for you to choose your favourite pup and barrack for them over the four episodes. This was an exciting way to raise awareness of these fantastic animals and what they can do. ★★★★ Why you should watch it: Wonderful family viewing.

Why you wouldn’t: You don’t like dogs.

The last two years have been like sailing into a hurricane for the travel industry, though here we all are in 2022 with a fresh set of travel dreams.

THE STORY BEHIND YOUR STREET NAME

The first local government within the district came with the establishment of the Borough of North Willoughby in 1865. James Best was elected as one of two auditors of the Borough of North Willoughby in 1867 and he was unsuccessfully nominated for the Council in 1869 and 1870.

Following the death of Alderman Broadfoot in 1870, Best was elected as his replacement, but an objection and court action was raised by an opposing contender and Best resigned. He was re-elected on 14 September 1870 when a new election was held.

hile it has been said that Best Street is one of ‘the best places’ to live in Lane Cove, the naming of Best, Riverview, College and Pengilly Streets can be traced back to a pioneer settler of the Riverview area, James Peter Best.

Born in 1833, James Peter Best, was the second son of six children born to James and Elizabeth Best in Cornwall, England. James chose a career in teaching rather than the family cabinetmaking business. His family emigrated in 1849, and James taught on the ship during the voyage.

In the colony, James taught in many places including Dapto, Alexandria, Paddington, Parramatta, St Leonards, and Macquarie Fields. In 1860, he married a widowed teacher, Lucy Anderson, and settled and taught at Campbelltown. A son, George was born in 1861, followed by a daughter, Beatrice in December 1862. When both Lucy and George died from an illness in April 1863, James was left to raise his infant daughter. He subsequently resigned from teaching and moved back to Sydney, showing an interest in politics.

By 1866 James bought and settled on 30 acres of land in the Riverview area.

His house, Tambourine Bay House was situated between the presentday College Road and Pengilly Street.

During the 1860s Best had become a landowner with interests in various properties and in 1869, he exchanged some property with his younger brother George for additional land at Burns Bay and in 1869 he bought further land in the Riverview area.

Best became a substantial landowner with 84 acres which extended from Burns Bay in the west to Tambourine Bay Road. In the 1882 Sands Directory his house was Bayview Villa, which may have been the same house or a new one. The 1884 Sands Directory lists his address as Best Street, now Riverview Street. When the Jesuits bought the property known as ‘River View’ in 1878, Father Dalton considered the 33 acres on the headland would not be sufficient for the future and he bought an additional 54 acres from James Peter Best in November 1878.

James Peter Best continued to serve as an alderman from 1870 to 1884.

He was Mayor of the Borough in 1874 and 1883 and was said to be a hardworking alderman. His interest was in the provision of roads and their improvement, especially in his own area of Tambourine Bay. In October 1879, Council agreed to Best’s motion to clear the road, (now known as Riverview Street) and to name this Best Street. In 1882 Best also moved that the road which ran from Bridge Street to the Lane Cove River, between Best’s land and land owned by Riverview College, be called College Road. Best died in 1884 and in 1890 Willoughby Council resolved that Best Street and the road through the Riverview property to Burns Bay be called Riverview Street. Pengilly Street appeared from 1894 and is the maiden name of Best’s mother. The road now named Best Street runs from Centennial Avenue and crosses Penrose Street to the end of Bridge Street.

How to lower your energy and water bills during summer

U

sing more air conditioning and water in the summer months can be expensive, but there are things you can do to reduce your summer bills. We are the Energy and Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON), a free, fair and independent complaints-handling service for all electricity and gas customers in NSW, and some water customers.

• If you want to keep cool during the summer months, fans are the most energy efficient type of powered cooling costing 3-5 cents per hour.

• If you use an air conditioner set the temperature to 2426°C in summer. Every degree outside this range can add up to 10% to your cooling costs.

• Fridges and freezers work 24 hours, seven days a week!

They operate most efficiently if they’re cleaned regularly, frost free and tightly sealed. Help keep your fridge in good condition by putting it in a cool, ventilated position with space around it.

• A second fridge or freezer can add $300 a year to your energy bill. Make sure your first fridge is full before you decide to buy another.

• Always run your dishwasher with a full load, on economy mode or fast wash cycles and clean the filters regularly.

• Keeping your pool covered to prevent evaporation can save you 30,000L of water a year. Use the most energy efficient pump for your pool or spa’s size and check for leaks.

• Using mulch helps reduce weeds and retains water in your garden’s soil - without it up to 70% of water is lost due to evaporation. Use recycled household water on your plants and try to water your plants in the morning or evening.

ain, rain go away come again another day (or not!)

Sometimes I wonder why we moved to Australia 20 years ago – where is the sun I was promised?

Recently I have begun to feel that I could just as well be in Scarborough or Hull!

Whilst we may not have had a summer we have had a better start to the year than the past two years given that vaccinations are up, Covid numbers are down and masks are off – at least for the time being.

At Sydney Community Services we have started to come back to the new normal. Most staff are happy to be back in the office, working from home is very lonely.

Activities are back on and trips are happening. It almost feels like normal but we all know that nothing will ever be so carefree again. I will still use my key to push the lift button and my sleeve to cover my hand when I open doors. It will still feel funny to talk to someone without a mask and don’t even begin to think about giving me a kiss!

I recently read an article all about needing to rehabilitate from the trauma of the pandemic. It talked about the shock we first experienced when our life or routine and order was thrown into chaos when Covid

first hit and we went into lockdown in 2020. Then the prolonged period of uncertainty when we weren’t sure if it would ever end and whether what we were doing to keep safe was even working. Then there was the loneliness and the strong natural human need for social connectedness.

We are programmed to be social beings, generally we like each other and want to spend time together. Being forced to stay isolated causes pain and distress.

Finally, like a butterfly from a chrysalis, the world is starting anew. However, that wariness, that uncertainty remains with us. We must accept that many will still feel reticent to fully embrace the new normal with the same vigor we had before.

Seniors week this year is all about reconnecting. After two years of isolating, reconnection is important but difficult. The advice I read was that we should be gentle with ourselves and others and take time to adjust. We don’t know how long this will last so enjoy the now and just be comforted to know that the next wave will be easier, because we got through it last time, and we know we can do it again.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT HELEN HEGGIE “It was a crazy time I enjoyed with my staff and suppliers. I formed a lot of close relationships with people in the industry which I still have today,” she says.

Helen Heggie is the Activities CoOrdinator for Sydney Community Services and a born and bred lady of the lower north shore.

She says that living in the local area gives her a strong sense of community and that being sandwiched between Lane Cove River on one side and the Paramatta River on the other side gives her the feeling of being in the country and the city.

Before joining SCS, Helen ran her own business, “Bullet Sportswear” where she said it was not unusual to arrive at work at 4.00am and leave at 8.00pm with a line of couriers waiting at the door.

She sold the company in 2009 when her second son was born and when they went off to school, Helen looked at building a whole new work life.

She completed a diploma in Community Services.

“I found the change in career easy as working in the community sector involved being a part of a team, and I’ve always loved talking to people young and old across different cultures and walks of life,” she says.

Helen says there is no such thing as a typical day at SCS. “In a typical week I might be visiting clients, some in their late 90s for a cuppa and some social interaction, then I’m on a bus with up to 18 clients and volunteers taking them on day trip anywhere from the Northern Beaches to the Southern Highlands, visiting

local attractions, museums, historical sites and art festivals.

“My working week ends with a BBQ with my men’s group (the “BOOMers”), usually overlooking the ocean somewhere. I’ve always said I’m probably the happiest person in Sydney to go to work on a Monday,” she laughs.

This is great news for those with family and friends overseas and for our tourism industry.

Having assisted hundreds of residents during the pandemic with relatives overseas I know how important this next step will be to so many in our community.

Before entering Parliament, I was the Deputy CEO of a national tourism industry organisation so I also understand the significance of this week for a sector that normally employs hundreds of thousands of Australians and is one of our biggest export earners.

Tourism has suffered more than most industries during the pandemic so the site of visitors arriving at Sydney airport was a welcome one.

Australia would not be in such a privileged position to open its borders without our incredibly high vaccination rate. I’d like to thank all residents who have had their COVID vaccine and their booster shot.

Over 11 million boosters have now been administered although there remain many eligible Australians who are yet to take advantage of the free boosters being provided by

the Australian government.

If you haven’t already (and are eligible) please book in for a booster. It will help maximise protection against Omicron and other variants that might emerge. You can use the COVID-19 clinic finder online to book your appointment if you have not already done so.

Our booster program received another shot in the arm last month when the first protein vaccine available in Australia, Novavax, joined the national rollout through select general practices, community pharmacies and state clinics across the country.

The Australian Government has secured 51 million doses of Novavax to compliment the vaccine rollout and it becomes the 5th COVID-19 vaccine available in Australia.

Novavax is available for people aged 18 years and older for their primary course of vaccination, with two doses to be administered three weeks apart.

As a nation, we have administered a total of over 53 million doses of vaccine – an incredible achievement. I want to thank our incredibly hard-working local GPs and pharmacists who have been working overtime to support the vaccination and booster program over the length of the pandemic. We would not be enjoying this level of freedom without your incredible work.

Caring for our environment Our environment is so important to our way of life here in Hunters Hill.

Our urban bushland, harbour foreshores and open spaces are such a drawcard and are things that make this place such a special one to live in.

During March, we are hosting initiatives that are all about our Council working hand-in-hand with our community to take small but significant actions to care for our environment.

One of the ways in which we are seeking to create great places and promote improved environmental outcomes is by inviting volunteers to join us on Clean Up Australia Day. Our Council-led crew will be at Gladesville Reserve in Huntleys Point on Sunday 6 March.

If you have an hour or two to spare in the morning, we would love to see you there.

We will have any required COVID safety measures in place to protect our volunteers’ health and safety.

And a big thank you to this community members running clean ups in other parts of Hunters Hill on the day, including Tarban Creek.

Crews there cover the open space and mangroves to retrieve rubbish and recyclables and even hop in kayaks to retrieve plastic bags.

We are also fortunate to have groups including not-forprofit organisation Ecobel, which works throughout the year to enhance public education and waste reduction on the Lane Cove River.

This group’s participants enjoy paddling the Lane Cove River removing rubbish, conserving natural oyster beds and replanting local mangrove and seagrass beds.

This month we are also planning to hold our annual Youth Summit, bringing together students from our four local high schools to generate ideas for projects that focus on sustainability and which they can implement within their school or local community.

The event is also about increasing our level of youth engagement, something that we hope to build on during this term of Council.

Utilising Spaces During Omicron

This year of schooling and workplaces will return with a little added twist. The NSW Government, as I’m sure you are aware, have been providing Rapid Antigen Test kits for students and teachers to utilise up to twice a week for the first 4 weeks of term. I’d like to thank all school executives for their diligence and organisation in distributing these test kits for students and ensuring the learning environment is as safe as possible for them and their teachers. I’d also like to thank all teachers for their patience and flexibility in providing for those students who, at times, may be absent or unwell.

I’d also like to credit all students for their compassion and care for their peers and family. Doing their best to keep one another healthy and happy, both in and out of the classroom.

I understand that frequent testing may be stressful and slightly inconvenient, but remember it is for the health and safety of not only your peers and teachers but also for your family and friends whom you visit and spend time with outside of school.

Aside from schooling and education, hospitality sectors have seen added twists to rules and regulations allowing service and customer capacity while maintaining COVID Safety. Previous changes allow diners to use footpaths and public spaces directly outside their venue, now pubs and restaurants will be able to utilise their privately owned, outdoor areas; carparks for example, to increase their capacity while maintaining a more COVID Safe alfresco environment. This change will remain in place until the 30th of June.

Throughout Lane Cove we have so many wonderful areas of Crown Land. The NSW Government will be investing $15.23 million, from the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund, in more than 250 projects to maintain and upgrade reserves and community facilities across the state, some of which will be within Lane Cove. This Funding is intended to support everything from parks, community halls and sporting facilities to organisations like Scouts, Men’s Sheds, Youth and Surf Life Saving Clubs. Keeping these ever so valuable environmental areas in good condition will result in more community and tourism participation and presence which will result in supporting surrounding businesses and local economies.

A big call out for any young people in Lane Cove who are eager to get into the hospitality industry.

Throughout the pandemic the demand for workers in this industry has increased drastically.

To encourage more individuals to enter and work in the industry, NSW Liquor and gaming is offering 5,000 fee-free Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course. For those who already have an RSA, refresher courses are also available free of charge. A great little qualification to have and is most certainly a starting point for any recently out of High School student who wish to enter the workforce.

Lastly to add, something for the parents, the NSW Government has launched ‘Parent’s NSW Vouchers’. This is to thank parents, guardians and carers who provided home learning to their school enrolled children during 2021. There are five (5) $50 vouchers available, one parent per household. These vouchers can be redeemed at Discover NSW and Stay NSW registered businesses.
