Local Support for Local People SCS provides services to seniors and people living with a disability including social activities, gardening, home nursing, podiatry, Community Care Advisory, linen, home delivered meals, home modifications and maintenance, flexible respite, carers support, shopping services, community and engagement programs, medical transport and assistance in daily life.

This month we celebrate 60 years of Sydney Community Services, the Lane Cove-headquartered non-profit that cares for and serves seniors, those living with a disability and those who may have fallen on tough times in our suburbs and beyond. It is also the proud owner and publisher of this magazine.

The anniversary actually took place last year, but the throes of the pandemic stopped the planned celebrations and public acknowledgements for the volunteers that make SCS what it is. Hopefully once this new strain is under control, the celebrations can go back in the diary.

In this issue we look back over the 60 years of SCS, plus we introduce you to the new Councillors for Lane Cove and Hunters Hill.

Elsewhere are our regulars including our monthly column from Liz Foster, TV reviews from our favourite school crossing attendant Stephen Miller, plus book reviews, gardening and more.

We also pay tribute to the late Stewart Begg, who was part of the North Sydney Prostate Cancer Support Group. Stewart was constantly in touch with TVO. He would send us stories of happenings in Lane Cove and update us with news from the Support Group. As editor, I would smile when I saw an email or phone call come in from him. He was eloquent, very funny, exuded positivity and warmth. Stewart – you will be sorely missed.

news Family ties at UTS North Sydney Bears UTS North Sydney Bears are fighting hard to secure a finals birth in the Belvedere Cup first grade cricket competition. They are sitting in eighth position with seven games remaining. The team will be strengthened when explosive batsman Justin Avendano returns from the T20 Big Bash finals where he is playing for the Sydney Sixers.

Exciting youngsters Everett (Green Shield/third Grade) and Mabel (Brewer Shield Captain) Oxenham also play for the club with Mabel taking career best figures of 4/6 against Gordon.

Siblings abound further in the men’s teams and include Matt and Sam Alexander, Fletcher and Harrison May and Jack and Aidan Thomas who make up an integral part of the Bears’ bowling stocks. The Thomas boys have both played in the fifth grade side with Michael and Chris Lloyd (cousins) that currently leads the David Sherwood Cup with six wins two draws and one loss.

Another debut off the field is UTS North Sydney’s first grade scorer, Sarah Berman, who has achieved a coveted role of scoring the NSW v Victoria March Cup game in November and will score a WNCL game (WA vs NSW) at North Sydney Oval on February 24. Sarah is one of the essential volunteers at the Club holding the position of Committee secretary and has also donned the whites a few times when the club was in need.

The loss of Avendano has tested the club in the early rounds along with injuries to Captain Tom Jagot, James Campbell, Tim Reynolds and Mac Jenkins. However this has also provided opportunities for youngsters such as 20 year old Jimmy Greenslade who started the season in third grade. Greenslade scored an outstanding 78 in his second game of first Grade, while Adam Cavenor, the 2021 Killara High School captain, also impressed with 42 runs opening the batting in his debut in first grade.

Twenty one year old Kobe Allison from the Central Coast also scored a place in the first grade side.

There is further depth in the younger members of the club with 15 year old Hamish Reynolds finishing in fourth place on aggregate in the AW Green Shield Competition with 283 runs at an average of 47. Hamish was joined by Jamieson Hedges in the U17 State Challenge for the NSW Metro team, while Grace Keating and Lucy Warren will play for NSW Girls’ Metro in the upcoming under 16 State Challenge tournament.

Hamish is the brother of first grade player, Tim Reynolds, and represents one of the family connections within the North Shore club. These continue with 15 year old Emily Aitken who is daughter of club legend Robbie Aitken. In December, she debuted in women’s third grade and the Under 18 Brewer Shield competition.

Robbie and his brothers, James and Glenn, are all life members of the club. In Women’s third grade there is also a mother/daughter duo of Sarah and Amy Gibbons as well as Grace and younger sister, India Keating.

Tribute to Lane Cove local Stewart Begg Stewart had a fabulous career, was later a model/actor/ and became known locally for his work with the North Shore Prostate Cancer Support Group. He was regularly in touch with us here at TVO and his positivity, sense of humour and warmth will be sorely missed.

ere Stewart’s partner of 50 years, Geoff Nobs, and John Fullagar, Convenor of the Support Group, pay tribute.

Stewart (1st Feb 1934 – 6th Jan 2022) was truly a “man of many parts”. He added to his early rural home life and Scottish heritage by training as a marine fitter and turner. He became a car salesman (for prestige machines, of course) and a car enthusiast (but it’s not sure which of these came first) and this broad grounding equipped him well for his ultimate paid career as a model/actor. Readers may recall the TV commercial for Cussons Imperial Leather: as well as winning awards for advertising excellence, it featured a young Stewart instructing the pilot of his private jet: “Simon, Tahiti.”

Stewart was a keen (perhaps even exuberant) driver of performance machines and an active long-term member of the Rolls Royce Car Club.

In later life, Stewart turned his broad appreciation of human nature and what motivates us towards care for others, especially through the North Shore Prostate Cancer Support Group, a group led by trained volunteers and based at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital.

Stewart’s positive outlook, his enthusiasm for life, caring nature, sense of humour, irrepressible determination and dependability were treasured personal qualities that he used to their full in organising publicity for the Support Group’s activities, in particular through the “What’s On” columns of Lane Cove’s “The Village Observer”. Stewart was always a “giver/sharer” and was never backward in letting the Group benefit from his life-long contacts with VIPs, MPs etc.

Typically self-effacing, he often described himself in terms like “modest, optimistic, energetic, loquacious” - and a favourite expression was “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Observations within the Group suggest his listed qualities should also include “uplifting, dedication, predictability, generosity, sensitivity, compassion, perceptiveness, well-connected, determined, perseverance” - and we could go on and on and on!

We are missing Stewart’s participation already. As soon as COVID enables the Group to resume its regular activities - for men and their families/friends impacted by prostate cancer - there’s no doubt we will feel our loss even more keenly.

Lane Cove Theatre launches The Margo Easton Scholarship Margo Easton founded the Lane Cove Theatre Company in 1995. One of her goals was encouraging and improving theatre skills in the local community. To continue this legacy, LCTC is offering bursaries for people wanting to grow their skills in any area of theatre.

About us Lane Cove Theatre Company is a not-for-profit community theatre company based in the Lane Cove LGA. We have been operating for 27 years currently producing 4 shows per year including a children’s musical/panto style show annually.

For a while I’ve been worried our house has Covid. The house, not its occupants.

The first hint of something amiss started with the oven.

Some roast veggies came out not quite roasted. They were cooked enough, so we forgot about it until we tried cooking pizzas. The blast of lukewarm, non-pizza heating air confirmed the worst.

With Christmas lunch for eighteen just around the corner, a hasty and expensive trip to the Good Guys ensued.

We insisted the oven and cooktop had to be in stock, in Sydney. Sorry, they couldn’t install them or remove the old ones. Some lively back and forth followed where the delivery window came and went, and we were told the goods were out of stock. Only to discover both items on the doorstep.

We rallied. The gas hob needed a plumber while an electrician was recruited at no notice to install the oven and new requisite wall fittings.

Next to fall was the washing machine. Four days before Christmas, with a sodden load of heavy towels. There were no quick fixes, not even the removal of two bobby pins from the drainage valve which also had the unhappy consequence of flooding the laundry.

My husband set off again for the Good Guys while I was at work. I spent the day fielding messages like which model should we get, what size drum and was I still happy with Fischer and Paykel? By some miracle, the new machine was delivered and installed by the same team who took the old one to the giant field of appliances in the sky. It worked a treat and seemed too good to be true, so close to Christmas, with Covid running rampant in the outside world.

It was too good to be true. The laundry floor started flooding again quite soon after the machine’s first use.

The smiling helpful installation guy had neglected to shut off one of the taps properly.

Psychedelic dreams started to plague me, where our Covid-infected house needed shrouding by an ET style insulation bubble swarming with a team in full Hazmat gear.

It was the 1910 Manchurian plague where Malayan physician Wu Lien-teh insisted that all medical and burial staff wear a simple gauze mask. Though a definite step up from the Venetian beak doctor masks of the bubonic plague, he was ridiculed at the time. Modern hazmat suits are a familiar trope in pop culture pandemic blockbusters, back when they represented a fictionalised scenario we were confident would never happen. There’s a sort of space suit mystique assigned to them where a single scalpel nick can signify death or worse.

But Covid has made Hazmat suits all too familiar in the twenty first century. So given my strange dreams and the house’s continual decay, you can imagine my surprise to wake and find a plastic suited man on the roof outside my (first floor) bedroom window. He was fully clad in a PPE onesie, complete with draw string hood tightened round his face.

I gaped. He aimed an industrial size water blaster at the window. Rivers of black jettisoned through the window frame, spraying all over the (white) blind, walls, bed, carpet and in fact the whole room.

It turned out to be the long ago booked house painter, cleaning down the walls before starting. Very very thoroughly. Water finds its way and our unsealed windows were no exception.

Turns out, Hazmat suits work a treat for industrial scale cleaning as well as infection control. Fingers crossed I never need to don one.

interview: Toby Roberts Greenwich resident Toby Roberts has enjoyed a varied career and a fascinating life, some of which provided inspiration for his well-received book ‘Two Mums & a Dad’.

 You grew up in Beecroft, but ultimately ended up in Greenwich – why there?

lawyer, banker and a consultant. They are very disparate careers. Did you originally train to be a lawyer?

My wife and I were looking for somewhere with space and nature, close to town where we both work, and Greenwich ticked all the boxes.

I realise now, that in many ways Greenwich is similar to Beecroft, especially in relation to the bushland setting and the sleepy village atmosphere, so I’ve basically wound up where I started. It’s a bit sad really.

Yes, I started my working life in a big law firm but I got bored. My need for variety has pushed me in some strange directions. I’ve got a good balance now, between my consulting work (which throws me into a new environment every few months) and my writing. But the journey to this point has driven a few people to distraction, including my long-suffering wife.

 Greenwich is on a long list of places you have lived, both here and overseas. What took you on that journey, and what was your favourite place to live outside of Australia?

 You ended up being signed to a publishing company for your songwriting. Does that deal still stand, and if so, have you written songs for other artists?

It was always my work or my wife’s that took us offshore, and we loved being able to use those new homes as a springboard for exploring the world.

Jakarta was definitely the most foreign of the places I worked. I really miss the hazy tropical nights and the buzz of street food. But I don’t miss sitting in traffic until you begin to wonder if your children will still recognise you.  You have worked as a songwriter,

I’ve written songs that wound up on the soundtracks of movies, some were played in commercial settings like shopping centre playlists, and I used to help write jingles that formed part of the pitch delivered by ad agencies. All of those connections have faded now, but I still play music - you can find my current band ‘The Hides’ on Spotify.

My tastes are straying towards country now, which I have to be careful about sharing because some people look

at me like I’ve admitted to eating a dolphin burger.  You’re now an author with your book ‘Two Mums & a Dad’ published

The book is about my teenage years, growing up with a lesbian mum and her partner in the 80s, in Beecroft, which was quite a conservative and religious area at the time. It focuses on the period when I’d just started high school at an uptight Anglican college on the north shore and I was struggling to find acceptance because I was a weedy little violinist with two mums.

If you like embarrassing life stories, along the lines of David Sedaris, then there should be something in it for you. I’d also hope readers take away the deeper message that over time, bravery and decency will win admirers and supporters in unlikely places.  It has been very well received.

Did you expect this level of attention?

The book has scored some terrific publicity in the press, on radio and on TV. Part of me hoped it would never get any attention, so my family

and friends would be less troubled about their awful secrets being aired.

Thankfully most of them are talking to me again, though when I catch up with them now, they ask ‘Are you writing any of this down?’  Tell us about your family life in Greenwich – you’re married with two children…

My son Gabe (14), daughter Winnie (12), and Whippet Devo (3), live with my wife and I in a Beachcomber House, surrounded by Gum trees which keep dropping branches on our roof. We spend most of our time sweeping up leaves and stopping the dog from eating lizards.

Even though you are clearly a busy person, when you take time out with

your family, what do you like doing/ where do you like going?

We live near Bob Campbell Oval, which adjoins the harbour, so we love to kayak in the surrounding bays. You can paddle among the millionaires’ yachts and dream about stealing one.  Let us know how we can find out more about you and your book…

To travel, or not ?

Shakespeares’s famous line “To be or not to be, that is the question” has, in recent days at least, morphed into “To travel or not to travel, that is the question …..” By Adrienne Witteman.

y December TVO article wrapped up 2021 optimistically, reporting that 2022 (and beyond) bookings were happening. It referenced the attractiveness of expedition cruising and bucket list travel, as people sought to make up for lost time.

What a difference 8 weeks makes!

Now mired in Omicron, it’s as if our clientele is in limbo, testing their commitment and their dreams.

When once I knew no-one personally who had contracted the virus I now know several. You will be the same.

All are grateful they could isolate at home.

But what of those who could not?

I had 9 parties of clients venture overseas once it was permitted and of these 1 person in a couple visiting England, plus 4 adults and 1 child in a family group of 6 visiting Switzerland became infected. It meant a change to their arrangements, with the family needing to return home later than expected but they coped, and insurance will help cover the additional costs. Importantly, most of those travelling clients did not get infected.

What has become problematic – and why an agent acting for you - is dealing with provider issues. Cathay recently cancelled all of its flights for a 6 week period, forcing me to organise new tickets home from Europe on behalf of one couple and completely new return tickets for others travelling in February. Domestically, Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar are cancelling and rescheduling, to less devastating effect because of insufficient demand and insufficient staff.

Meanwhile resorts report they cannot operate their properties at capacity.

Management are cleaning rooms, waiting tables and doing the dishes due to furloughed staff.

The typically negative media focus might cause you to think that it is all doom and gloom yet this is far from the truth. Cruising remains the bright star in a raft of travel operations, and European skiing another, because of the ability to create bubbles. This, and the supposition that the Omicron crisis is temporary, is what continues to give people confidence. I often remark you are safer on a cruise ship than in a supermarket these days.

It is true that a few clients are indicating they are not yet confident to fly overseas and re-explore the world.

However, we’re getting a greater number express confidence that it is now or never. Put bluntly, at 20 you can still reasonably expect another 60 years of life and travel opportunities so the loss of 2020 and 2021 is insignificant. However, at 70 years old with maybe 10-15 more years you’ve lost 20% of the travel time left to you.

FOMO, and/or the desire to relive the pleasures of travel, is still top of mind for many.

So what am I advocating you do? For the moment, sit tight. Don’t cancel your plans unless absolutely essential.

If you’re still dreaming, keep dreaming!

And me? Well, we’ve been invited to Europe for a luxury ship christening in March, after which we’ll continue onto America, lead our Mississippi group cruise and then enjoy some downtime there and in Mexico. Of course there will be issues but after two years of going nowhere, I’m itching to see what awaits beyond Australia.

And you? Keep in touch – my advice and experience will be invaluable for your travels. Remember …

A message from our CEO, Gill Batt

W

hen Claudia Leach found some isolated Lane Cove residents needing assistance in 1961 she decided to do something about it. Sixty years later we continue her work, inspired by her real commitment for local community support for local people. At the very heart of our organisation are the 300 volunteers who willingly give their time to help others. Whether it be Meals on Wheels, making beds, driving the shopping bus, driving people to medical appointments or visiting older people in aged care homes who otherwise never have any other visitors. All these things are done without any expectation but the knowledge that they are making a difference to people’s lives.

In the past couple of years there has also been an amazing community response for those who are doing it tough. Not just older people but working age people and families who have been impacted by the pandemic and who have reached out to the local community for help to get by. Donations of essential food supplies and vouchers for supermarkets have enabled local people to cope and live with dignity.

If anyone was ever to question the need for local community based support they need look no further than the visitors to our offices in Hunters Hill and Lane Cove and listen to the calls we receive from desperate people not sure of where to turn. We have always had strong connections with our local councils but the past couple of years have cemented those partnerships and we have worked closely with Lane Cove Council, Hunters Hill Council and Ryde Council.

I really hope that we are getting towards the end of the crisis but however it pans out I know that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in the story started all that time ago in the Lane Cove roads when Claudia found the inspiration for change.

Happy 60th birthday Sydney Community Services Founded by Claudia Leach in 1961, SCS quietly, amidst the pandemic, celebrated 60 years of being the beating heart of community services in Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and beyond.

Here we recount a history of how this unique service came into existence and has grown to become the powerhouse it is now.

ast year, in the pandemonium of the second wave of the pandemic, Sydey Community Services [SCS] quietly turned 60. Anniversary celebrations have gone uncelebrated because of COVID, so now perhaps is the time to congratulate the present organisation for its amazing service to our local community and to look back to see how it came into being and why such a service was needed.

SCS has had several incarnations, beginning first as the Lane Cove Community Aid Service in 1961, changing in 2011 to Lane Cove & North Side Community Services before becoming Sydney Community Services in 2017 through a merger with Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services.

The last five years have seen radical changes in disability support services with individualised NDIS budgets, in seniors’ care policy with and increasingly ageing population, and in health and wellbeing requirements to ward off social isolation. In response, SCS has realigned the traditional forms of care to cater for the complex needs of each person receiving the care.

Along with a staff of 16 full-timers and 50 part-timers, more than 300 volunteers provide almost 100,000 hours of care every year.

The services on offer are not designed to duplicate assistance offered by other social service agencies; rather, they provide holistic support to any resident, regardless of income and age, under four umbrellas: disability services, services for seniors, services relating to health and personal care and community connections.

The aim is to foster a good quality of life and to enable people to remain independent and living in their own homes.

SCS, headquartered in the suburb where it began, has come a long way since inception.

When Claudia Leach decided that Lane Cove needed to establish an organisation that would bridge the gap between community and loneliness, between wealth and want, she set in motion a volunteer operation that has unfailingly held out a helping hand to residents for over half a century.

The idea came to her whilst she was busy doorknocking on her 1959 election campaign for Lane Cove local council.

Some doors she knocked on were slowly opened by shuffling seniors, some opened onto the chaos of noisy children and a clearly stressed parent,

some by a disabled resident. Behind these doors there was a need for help with meals, child-minding, housework, laundry, loneliness.

Claudia - she hated her Welsh name, Gladwys – was described as ‘indomitable’ ‘energetic’, ‘iron willed’, ‘formidable’.

She was intensely involved in her community, supporting local arts and theatre and was one of the driving forces behind the Lane Cove Plaza and initiatives to keep Lane Cove green and leafy.

She and fellow councillor, Marjorie Propsting, were vanguard females in local government.

It is not entirely clear whether some newspaper and magazine articles of the time were, or were not, quietly mocking such women. For instance, the Australian Women’s Weekly in 1961 reported Leach saying that she finds that “men who make the best councillors are those who listen to their wives,” adding that “Local government can be too finicky for a man.”

Clearly, she had the confidence and courage to dedicate herself to any idea she considered a good one.

She listened to mothers complain about a traffic black spot where children had to cross and helped to install a police warden; a widow suddenly left with five children and no readily available money sought her help and she listened, and she listened to an older single businesswoman whose sudden eviction notice left her without the home she had rented for many years.

Duly elected, ‘formidable’ Claudia argued her proposal before Council. She wanted to set up a ‘Pool of Service’, a functioning, accountable, community organisation.

Council agreed to sponsor this “most original” enterprise and, in doing so, Lane Cove Community Aid Service was born and earned Lane Cove the A.R. Bluett Memorial Award for being the most developed and progressive municipality in 1961.

Since inception, Lane Cove Council has maintained close co-operation with Lane Cove Community Aid, recognising its valuable service to residents.

Without any administrative or executive interference, they provide a yearly subsidy and in 1965, provided the premises at 164 Longueville Road in which LCCAS could operate.

Today it is housed, for peppercorn rent, in Council property at 1 Pottery Lane. In those early years Leach was supported by a group of likeminded people and other community organisations who pledged their volunteer support to address the welfare needs of Lane Cove’s then 24,000 residents.

The first Committee had 20 members from the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Apex Club, the Churches, the Minister’s Fraternal, local businesses, Civil Defence, RSL, Baby Health Centre, P&C Associations, CWA, Smith Family, Red Cross, Legacy and private citizens.

By 1981 they were raising around $9,000 per year. In all, more than 200 individuals, clubs, organisations and companies supported LCCAS and many of these continue do so.

Claudia developed a marketing plan and produced a publicity brochure that was dropped into every house in the municipality. It outlined the services offered and enclosed a large triangular cardboard ‘H for Help’ sign TVO 19

which you were to put in the front window of your house if you needed emergency assistance.

Early services were the Home Companion Service and Meals on Wheels. In the archives, there is a newspaper photograph of volunteers ladling food out of two huge saucepans on hotplates in the boot of a car. The volunteers then hand-delivered the hot meals to recipients, often stopping for a quick chat.

Today, meals are prepared in a state-of-the-art kitchen and packaged into high-quality microwaveable packs Over 20,000 meals make their way out of the kitchen each year.

The Home Companion Service also commenced in 1964. Volunteers visited housebound residents as well as locals in convalescent homes and hospitals.

In that year, the volunteers of the Rotary Ladies’ Auxiliary acquired $300 (nearly $14,000 today) worth of nursing equipment and a donated wheelchair to add to the four already in use. These were on loan, free of charge, to needy residents, as well as crutches, commodes, bed cradles and rests.

By 1969 LCCAS rose to the challenge of 20,000 cases.

Clearly, it was performing a much-needed service.

LCCAS came to the attention of other municipalities who sought information about how to set up such aid services. This saw Claudia addressing meetings of other interested residents of municipalities. Later, she would address audiences in Europe, Canada, the United States and Japan.

In a 1972 speech, Claudia said that throughout her travels she had seen “many far more expensive and elaborate services [but] she had encountered none so personal, so co-ordinated and so efficient as the LCCAS.” Claudia foresaw that the future of care for the elderly should partly rely on “subsidies that should be paid to families to enable their elderly relatives to be cared for at home with some assistance.”

Child minding was also on her agenda for “widows, deserted wives and unmarried mothers.”

Welfare counselling was introduced in 1982, and more services were introduced in 1987 with the Home

Maintenance and Modification Service.

By 2000, LCCAS operated with $820,000 grant money and $98,000 in donations. It had over 30 administration staff plus 260 volunteers.

13 services were offered with a Lower North Shore Gardening Service added in 2002 and funded by the government. This was in response to research that noted that it was often the garden—the client’s ‘window on the world’—that was a deciding factor for moving into supported accommodation. The expanded Gardening Service kept seniors in their homes for longer. In-Home Podiatry was added in 2003. It became the third largest program in the organisation. A Linen Service was introduced in 2004. Government grants totalled over a million dollars with services running at breakeven or a small deficit.

On its 50th anniversary, LCCAS changed its name to Lane Cove & North Side Community Services [LCNSCS].

Funding was extended to cover the widening of its services which would now accept clients living in the local government areas of Lane Cove, Mosman, North Sydney and Willoughby.

Fifteen services were extended to support the community throughout the lower north shore and beyond.

The new Community Care Advisory Service, an informal counselling and support service providing information and advocacy to those who need it, reflected the changing demographics and needs of residents.

For example, “an 89-year-old carer asked about getting help for her 102-year-old husband.” It is an invaluable community service. A frequent situation is one where a progressive illness develops, such as dementia, or immobility triggers carers and families to look at available care options, including residential care. The Community Care Advisory Service can explain all available options with expertise, patience and understanding.

In July 2017, Sydney Community Services [SCS] was established following a merger between Lane Cove and North Side Community Services and Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services. This move addressed changes in government policy and the trend to move from small local

entities to larger regional, state and national not-for-profit organisations.

Nowadays, it is a wide-ranging service Claudia would be proud of.

Social support groups meet in the Community Hubs in Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and the Meeting House in Lane Cove North.

Group outings are a regular fixture with bus trips to places of interest and lunches in cafes and restaurants.

Support for carers continues with advice on what is required to provide holistic care. With a referral from a GP, Hospital Discharge Planner, or Aged Care Assessment Team, recipients can take advantage of services such as inhome nursing organised within a few days.

Nurses and Personal Care Workers visit clients in homes across the lower north shore and beyond.

In 2019 Community Connections initiated a targeted early intervention program with Reach Higher. This aimed to support and empower young people who have difficulty accessing basic supports due to extenuating factors such as isolation or financial disadvantage. SCS continues to implement material supports to circumvent crisis points.

Also, with a Federal Government grant, a new program was introduced to mentor seniors with free weekly twohour face-to-face technology tutorials. The program proved very popular and continued until COVID-19 arrived.

All in all, in the year ending June 2019, SCS provided 36,367 services; delivered 25,116 home delivered meals, maintained 735 homes and gardens and undertook 319 home modifications.

It changed 797 beds, made 2,144 home podiatry visits, provided 708 clients with domestic assistance. Voluntary social support spent 25,746 hours with groups, 15,349 hours of voluntary disability support for groups, 4,563 hours of individual support (phone or online shopping), 1,807 hours of respite care and 546 hours of advisory and counselling.

SCS now engages partnerships with tertiary educational institutions to give practical experience to those choosing a career in community service.

Students from University of Sydney, Western Sydney, Macquarie and the Australian Catholic Universities and Meadowbank TAFE accumulated over three and a half thousand hours with SCS. Such programs are a positive win-win for students looking to gain experience and for SCS clients.

Although the services were well placed to cope with the onslaught of COVID-19, and all the essential services continued, SCS had to quickly modify procedures.

Volunteers continued to deliver as many services as they could, despite the limitations posed by the pandemic.

A Pandemic Support Program mandated procedures for social distancing and sanitisation. Volunteers received training and directed clients to put a table outside their front door to receive home delivered meals and supplies.

Keeping their distance, volunteers made sure the client was able to receive the meal whilst they assessed their health at the same time.

Procedures to provide clean linen to those unable to make their beds were modified. Those unable to have friends or relatives to assist were visited by SCS nurses and personal care assistants instead of the regular volunteers.

Understandably, many were reluctant to visit the shops in the lockdown and there was a 30% increase in home delivered meals during May and June.

There was a 10-fold increase in the number of families in need of crisis support.

SCS worked together with local grocers, churches and community members to source and deliver food and necessities such as toiletries. With the support of Harris Farms and the charity Touched By Olivia, it was able to provide emergency food parcels to families in need, including the women and children staying at Delvena Women’s Refuge.

Because of the restrictions of the pandemic, the number of services delivered dipped 16%, but given the enormous impact of the lockdowns and restrictions, SCS still managed to deliver 30,526 services to those requiring assistance.

Perhaps it is a little early to predict how 2022 will turn out, but the staff and dedicated volunteers of Lane Cove’s own homegrown community aid service will continue to provide the means by which many disabled, disadvantaged and senior residents will be able to experience a quality life in their own homes and by which young, distressed families will be able to avoid crisis with educational, wellbeing and financial support.

Sharing your garden with native birds

Birds feeding preferences can be loosely categorized into four food groups: • Nectar eating (eg lorikeets) • Fruit and seed eaters (eg Sulfur crested cockatoos) • Insect eaters (such as finches and wrens) • Carnivores (eg Kookaburra) What you plant in your green space will affect what birds you will attract. There are loads of native plants, trees and shrubs that provide birds with nectar, fruit and seed .

The last couple of years the majority of us have been spending more time at home. For those with an outdoor space, watching the local birds drop by for a drink, dip or feed has been regarded as a very welcome distraction!

Living in and around Lane Cove we are very fortunate to share our location with a large and diverse family of native birds. From the tiny shy fairy wren to the boisterous, loud (and rather destructive) Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, our feathered friends can often instill feelings of serenity and contentment. There are lots of things you can do to encourage birds to drop by.

Birds are always on the move. Think of your garden as a local petrol station or convenience store where they will more often than not drop in, fill up and move on! It may take them a little time to notice your patch, however once you stock the goods (such as fresh water and a natural food supply), they will be sure to drop in!

WATER All birds will seek water. Elevated water will attract larger birds as they will feel safer if they have an unobstructed landing and ‘getaway area’. Smaller birds such as finches, like to fly low and will often flit through vegetation (avoiding the bigger birds) to access water and food closer to ground level. Whether it be a dish of water, pond or fountain it does not matter as long as it is fresh and clean. Place a few sticks/ rocks in water for somewhere to sit and to aid landing.

Using mulch (instead of pebbles) and planting native grasses (instead of lawn) as well as reducing the use of pesticides will encourage lizards, insects, worms and frogs and provide food for carnivorous birds e.g. Kookaburras.

Provide opportunities for nesting such as hollow logs, nesting boxesl shade and protection from domestic pets.

Examples of native plants that provide food and shelter • Banksia • Grevillea • Bottle brush • Bird of Paradise • Native Frangipani • Kangaroo Paw • Tussock grass • Fountain grass TIP: Include some plants that flower/bear fruit in winter, when food is a little harder to find! When choosing plants for your garden/balcony, dont forget to take into account the plants requirements, eg the amount of daily sunlight it needs to thrive. Also bear in mind that birds will be attracted to an area with group plantings of the same variety of plants.

As 2022 gets underway Council will be checking in with the community on its Liveable Lane Cove: 2035 plan to see if the strategic direction of Council still aligns with the community’s expectations. Liveable Lane Cove: 2035 serves as the Community Strategic Plan which helps to inform the medium and short-term plans of Council. This means it is extremely important that we get your feedback on the plan to guide us through this Council term.

This month residents will be invited to participate in an online survey which will mirror the questions also being provided in a randomised telephone survey.

Together the information will be used to update and improve the existing plan and keep Council on track in delivering quality services, infrastructure and support to Lane Cove residents.

Latest News

Council services update: I’m pleased to say that so far we have been able to maintain the service levels at our Council facilities including the Library, Aquatic Centre, Youth Centre and Civic Centre with the exception of JP services which are temporarily unavailable.

COVID-19 has however created challenges for some of our contractors and although they are adjusting as best they can, we thank you for your patience where services are delayed.

This includes some maintenance at our park areas taking longer than usual as well as longer wait periods for Household Clean-up bookings as the contractors prioritise collecting daily waste/recycling. If part of your cleanout involves electronic waste or problem waste then a reminder that you can drop this off to the Community Recycling Centre in Artarmon for free.

Bob Campbell Oval & Sport and Recreation Facility Update: On Monday 24 January your new Council held its first Extraordinary Meeting which was to discuss the revision of the Bob Campbell Oval Master Plan. The meeting resolved to not to proceed with a synthetic playing surface. An additional process will commence with community representatives to review the existing Bob Campbell Oval Masterplan with a turf field. Council also resolved as a matter of urgency to request that the Sydney North Planning Panel defer making a determination on the Development Application (DA) for the Indoor Sport and Recreation Precinct. This will not withdraw the DA. Council also affirmed its intention to look at other solutions to provide an indoor Sport and Recreation Precinct for Lane Cove Residents. Helen Street Reserve Playground Upgrade: Works are now underway on a new playground which will be available soon to residents of Lane Cove North. This includes new play equipment, swings and an extra ping pong table which will be adorned with a new artwork in the coming months.

While works are underway residents may wish to visit the nearby Goodlet Reserve as an alternate playspace option.

St Leonards New Green Space: Construction is underway on the new green space in St Leonards with the piling work necessary to support the columns which will ultimately hold up the bridge now complete. Changed traffic conditions are in place on Canberra Avenue and Marshall Lane has reverted to a two-way laneway for the construction period. Upon completion the new 4,750 square metres of open space will feature a great lawn, plaza, passive nooks, boardwalk and a regional scale adventure playground. The design features best practice in landscape urban design and safety and is seamlessly connected to the JQZ, 88 Christie Street development, and includes retail, new public library, public toilets as well as a 300-space public basement car park. There are 15 free EV charging stations throughout Little Street, Market Square and The Canopy car parks as well as a brand new fast charging station opened in December 2021. The new fast charging station located on Level P2 of The Canopy is more than 10 times faster than Council’s existing units. Customers are required to download the Evie App before use. We will also include Evie Networks fastchargers in our new carpark in St Leonards, opening later in 2022.

In 2020 Council developed the Village Public Art program as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen cultural and creative expression within Lane Cove. The Village Public Art program is an exciting opportunity to create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere as well as preventing graffiti and enlivening public spaces.

Property owners backing onto Birdwood Lane have been approached to ascertain their interest in being part of the program which aims to ‘brighten up’ some of the blank walls facing Birdwood Lane.

Expressions of Interest from artists have also been sought as part of the project’s efforts to enliven the local streetscape following the opening of The Canopy.

Residents and visitors to Lane Cove will have noticed the two striking artworks which now adorn the walls of two local businesses following their completion in 2021. It is hoped that a third artwork will join the mix later in 2022 following the success of these initial works.

The Daily by Kim Siew

Sydney-based artist, Kim Siew, has created a vibrant mural called The Daily on the rear wall of Lane Cove Newsagency facing The Canopy town square. What an amazing transformation!

With a playful reference to the newsagency that resides within these walls, The Daily also highlights the little routines that we create for ourselves to maintain a sense of connection with each other. Whether it’s stopping for a coffee from our local, taking a walk along the neighbourhood streets or stopping to sit and read the paper within The Canopy square. These little habitual comforts are familiar to us all.

Tribute to the Moon Down Under

The most recent artwork is a large-scale mural on the rear wall of the Commonwealth Bank on Birdwood Lane and incorporating diverse elements of Lane Cove’s natural environment, such as trees, native flora and birdlife.

This delightful new work was completed by Katherine Gailer (also known as KATIRA). The work has been positively received across the community since its completion in December 2021.

Council is also continuing its commitment to other public art projects with new artworks earmarked for street libraries, traffic signal boxes and a ping pong table in the coming months.

Talking Dentistry This month we’re talking restorative dentistry with Dr Andrew See who combines passion, artistic flare and extensive knowledge of dentistry to answer any questions you may have. He has advanced training in aesthetic and implant dentistry.

Reader’s question: “What can I do about a gummy smile?”

Dr See says: Great question. Creating a

natural aesthetic smile involves the gums as much as the teeth and if ignored can result in a compromised result.

From an aesthetic perspective, it is considered ideal if no more than 1 to 2mm of gum is visible when a person smiles. Some individuals have excessive gums showing around all their upper front teeth when smiling and this is referred to as a gummy smile. This can also occur in localised areas around individual teeth.

Dr Andrew See has dedicated the last 19 years to Aesthetic Dentistry and has unique qualifications in cosmetic dentistry and rehabilitation.

This includes a 3-year Masters in Aesthetic Dentistry from the prestigious King’s College London and a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology.

Let’s look at a case that we completed with gum recontouring, crown lengthening surgery and veneers to address the gummy smile.

Samantha came to see us because she wanted to reduce her gummy smile and make her teeth longer. She had worn her front teeth down by grinding and clenching at night. Every detail for Samantha was analysed and considered to ensure minimal preparation and maximum strength. To achieve the ideal result that complemented her lips and facial aesthetics, we recountoured the gum and the underlying bone through crown lengthening surgery.

The reason for excessive gum display can come from several causes. It is crucial in treatment planning to determine the cause as it dictates the method of treatment. When looking to improve smile aesthetics and harmony, I routinely evaluate the gums and perform advanced techniques when necessary to improve the heights, symmetry and shape of the gums to match the person’s smile line and facial aesthetics. Treatment ranges from removing the excess gum with or without removing excess bone (crown lengthening surgery), orthodontics and Botox injections.

Heart Disease

As a doctor, there are certain phone calls I dread receiving. Those from the police if out-of-hours or directly from a hospital, informing me that one of my patients has sadly died. Sometimes that news is expected especially if I knew they were palliative with not long to live. But many times, the death will be sudden and unexpected, in a seemingly relatively healthy person. The cause of death in a great many of these will be from cardiovascular disease (including ‘heart attacks’). In Australia one person will die from it, every 12 minutes.

ardiovascular disease affects approximately one in six Australians, and kills 118 people every day.

That’s a scary figure! It was the leading cause of death in males in 2019 according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, and was also the overall cause in 1 in 4 deaths. Because of this, we must be on the lookout for warning signs.

The complete list is too exhaustive for this article, but the biggest alarm bell is chest symptoms. Often misleadingly described as chest pain, its intensity can range from sharp

pain, to a tightness or heavy dull-pressure sensation (feeling like an elephant sitting on your chest). It will be usually felt centrally or left-sided with its exact location often vague and hard to pinpoint. It can radiate down your left arm or up to your neck, and often associated with physical exertion or stress. Another big clue is that you will ‘feel not right or unwell’ – often sweaty, feeling clammy or short of breath. If you have any of these symptoms and which do not improve after 10 minutes or active rest – do not delay and call triplezero 000 straight away!

The encouraging news though is that deaths from heart disease have been decreasing over the last 10 years. This is due to a number of factors including identification (and modification) of heart disease risk factors and ongoing advancements in cardiac treatments and care.

Non-modifiable risk factors include: a family history of coronary artery disease (especially if you have affected firstdegree relatives less than age 60 years), being male, being a post-menopausal woman, and of certain racial ethnicities, including South-East Asians, and Middle Eastern. Heartrelated events and death in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders occur on average about 10 to 20 years earlier compared to non-indigenous Australians. I advise these patients there is nothing we can do about these risk factors, but we need to be extra careful. But what is more important is concentrating on the modifiable risk factors.

The Heart Foundation of Australia succinctly explains this in 5 simple steps that reduces your risk of heart disease: 1. Having a healthy diet: by eating more fruit and vegetables, wholegrain cereals and less saturated fats. Using herbs and spices as a salt-substitute (salt increases your blood pressure). Eating less processed foods (up to 35 percent of the current Australian diet is made up of highly-processed foods – cakes, biscuits, lollies, potato chips, sugary drinks). Watch portion sizes and food group proportions – the average meal size has increased significantly compared to back in the day of our grandparents!

2. Doing more exercise. Current evidence indicates that two thirds of the Australian population are obese and

that 80 percent don’t do enough exercise. Aim for 30-60 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (eg brisk walking) at least 5 days a week. Choose activities that you enjoy.

Find an exercise partner or enrol in a gym membership/ hire a personal trainer to keep yourself motivated and accountable. Sit less – doing so throughout the day has a lower risk of early death, particularly from heart disease.

Being active will help you feel energetic, mentally healthy and reduce depression.

3. Quit smoking. There are immediate benefits of reducing your risk of once you’ve quit. One has to be personally motivated to quit and to stay quitted. Whether you’ve already had a ‘heart attack scare’, wishing to keep up physically with the children or even from a cost savings – whatever it takes to make you make that change to quit, do it! See your GP for help if needed.

4. (and 5.) Understand and control cholesterol and blood pressure. I put these two together as they share many characteristics – both have no symptoms when elevated, are major risk factors for heart disease, are controlled by the above-mentioned steps, are assessed by your doctor and are well-managed with medications if needed.

Finally, see your GP and ask for an annual comprehensive ‘Healthy Heart Check’ especially if you are age 45 years and above. They will be able to properly calculate and explain your personal risk of heart disease and importantly ongoing prevention and management.

Return to winter sports One of the many effects of COVID and social distancing rules has been the restrictions on team sports. It is hoped this winter many people can return to their beloved sports.

Most team sports involve twisting and turning, jumping plus forward, backward and sideways movements. Depending on your sport there is usually throwing or kicking involved as well. Now is a very good time to start working on these skills to help prevent injuries from unaccustomed movements early in the season. It is tempting to think a bit of gym work or running will have kept you fit. These activities are good for strength and fitness but without playing team sport due to COVID, it is easy to lose the sport specific skills required. A graduated return to the sport specific skills now is one of the best ways of reducing your chances of injuring yourself.

If you do start to feel either your old sports pains returning or new ones developing, getting prompt care and attention is the best way of keeping you on the field for the rest of the season. We can help you with your pain and also help you with self-care strategies for prevention and management for the rest of the season.

What I watched on TV… As we move into February, there are many great programs around, says resident TV man Stephen Miller. Here are a few of his recommendations.

The writing and cinematography of this true-crime dramatisation are fresh, engaging and tell this compelling story in such a way that it makes you reevaluate what a victim and a perpetrator are supposed to look like. Olivia Coleman or David Thewlis are absolute delights, and their mesmerising performances bring these unremarkable characters to life. ★★★★ Why you should watch it: Most viewers (as did I) felt this was an inventive, surreal, theatrically compelling drama…

Why you wouldn’t: …while some people found it depressing, drab and a little overlong.

UK viewers smashed the BBC iPlayer’s streaming records when millions tuned in to binge-watch this excellent crime drama series over the Christmas holidays. Jamie Dornan (50 Shades trilogy) plays a man who has absolutely no idea of who he is after waking up from a car crash in the Australian outback. After discovering there are some pretty nasty bad guys pursuing him from his past though, he needs to try and piece his memory back together, work out who he was, who he is now, and do so fast! ★★★★★ Why you would watch it: It’s a grippingly watchable thriller.

Why you wouldn’t: You have a low tolerance of implausible scenarios.

I really enjoyed this six-part drama and in fact binge-watched it over a weekend. There’s a lot of negativity in the world, and this is the beautiful escapism we all need. It explores modern love experienced by three family members at different stages in their lives. This homegrown Binge original excels in all departments, script, casting, acting and direction. It exudes global quality and could develop into a series that lasts a few seasons. It is highly relatable, touching on feelings most of us would have felt at some time in our lives with wit and honesty. ★★★★★ Why you would watch it: It’s about love, not murder. Hugo Weaving and Bojana Novakovic are both excellent.

Why you wouldn’t: You don’t subscribe to Binge.

I watched series one after seeing the trailer for the release of series two. If you haven’t seen this show yet, it’s an exciting concept, three different households, three different decades – 50s, 80s and present-day – but all set in the same house. It explores the role of women in American society of that time and the way their men might attempt to screw them over. Inevitably this leads to (without giving too much away) a few some reasons why women might well want to kill men. It’s a light, superficial, but highly compelling, dark, comedic drama. ★★★★ Why you would watch it: It’s enjoyable telly. It’s fun and suitable for all.

Why you wouldn’t: You prefer your TV less soapy and more unwashed.

Last month saw the release of the third and final season of this dark comedy about grief and community created, written, directed, acted and produced by Ricky Gervais. I was really looking forward to this; however, loss and depression are tricky subjects to continually extract humour. So while there is something still fundamentally enjoyable about this final season, it occasionally seems a tad bland and sometimes drifts into clichéd and repeated dialogue. ★★★½ Why you would watch it: It’s a nice black comedy-drama about life, grief and human frailty.

Why you wouldn’t: You’re not a fan of the often foul-mouthed humour of Ricky Gervais.

Back in 1986, Australia’s most expensive painting, Picasso’s The Weeping Woman, vanished from the wall of the National Gallery of Victoria. Incredibly, this crime has still never been solved; even more astounding was that no one even noticed it was missing for two days. How then could this uninsured, controversial, $2 million vision in acid green simply disappear?

The only clues police had to go on were a bizarre series of ransom notes and a number of rumours. This true-crime story is an absorbing insight and attempts to piece together all the evidence. Despite remaining unsolved, the program does hint at several compelling theories. ★★★★ Why you should watch it: It’s a fascinating look at an art heist like no other.

Why you wouldn’t: You don’t like investigative historical documentaries.

Jonathan Franzen’s 6th novel, Crossroads, is a sweeping family drama set against a backdrop of a changing Midwest America at the end of the Vietnam War. In the fictional Chicago suburb of New Prospect, Illinois, the Hildebrandt family is under pressure. It is Christmas 1971 and Christian America is trying to cope with the rise of feminism and the new sexual freedoms of the Peace and Love movements. Sex, drugs and pop music are infiltrating Christian youth groups with confronting results.

The novel opens with Russ Hildebrandt, a flawed middleaged pastor and father of five - a deeply religious man who is also deeply insecure and chasing his lost youth. Once the unchallenged leader of the youth of the church, he is being sidelined and humiliated by the hip, charismatic youth minister, Rick Ambrose. Threatened by Rick and bored with his wife of twenty years, he pursues new confidence through an attractive young widow who is new to the congregation. Russ’s story alone is enough for a novel. But Crossroads has no central protagonist - each member of the Hildebrandt family is a complex character with a complete backstory and inner life of their own. Russ’s wife, Marion, damaged and lonely, hides her past trauma behind her motherly image. She masks her sense of worthlessness with her selfless care for her family. Clem, their eldest son, usually perceptive and kind, is losing his way at university. He is discovering sex and love and struggling with the morality of evading the Vietnam draft. Becky, their teenage daughter, is pretty and popular and becoming aware of the power of her beauty and seeking independence. Fifteen-yearold Perry, brilliant and deceptive, is having an existential crisis and using drugs to quiet his overly philosophical mind. Judson, their youngest is only nine years old and good-naturedly drifts through the family’s dysfunction, too young to join in the adolescent crises but still feeling the effects.

Crossroads is unflinching in its incisive portrayal of human frailty and firmly fixes Franzen as a novelist of character and social milieu. His insightful revelation of various characters’ inner lives - the lies that they tell themselves and others, the self-justifications that make their weaknesses bearable to themselves is both damning and sympathetic.

Crossroads is a domestic drama that captures Midwest America in the early 70s with unerring accuracy. Franzen explores the complexity of family and social relationships and the inner life that lies beneath the surface. Franzen excels in the liminal space between the public and the private self and the inner turmoil experienced at the mercy of the battle between the person we strive to be and the flawed person we inevitably become. But he also tackles the big issues: religion, morality and shifting social paradigms. Franzen has announced that Crossroads is to be the first novel in a trilogy that continues the compelling story of the Hildebrandt family through the next generation.

Crossing the Border This Christmas we finally crossed the border to celebrate with our family and SA friends. The reunion was sweeter for the apprehensive time waiting. Would S.A. slam the border shut as in the previous year? Would we be quarantined when we arrived? Would we catch COVID in the process? So many questions – all thankfully answered ‘No’! How wonderful it was to see everyone in person again and hang out together. It was definitely worth the risks involved.

My border crossing was easy and pleasant, being my choice to return to those who love me. This is far from the case for many people around the world, who choose a risky path of escape from hazardous situations and are then detained for their efforts, sometimes for many years.

Solutions are complex, but start with our compassion. The Asylum Seekers Centre and UNHCR offer ways we can help these people.

Crossing over from one place, or station in life, to another, is often cause for some anxiety for us too, even if it’s a favourable change. Relationship changes, re-locating, changing jobs or retirement may be chosen or forced upon us, but how we embrace them is up to us. I find the apostle Paul inspirational here, the following being written from prison: … I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him (Christ) who gives me strength.

(The Bible, Philippians 4:11-13 NIV) Can we learn to be content whatever change assails us?

Can we be empathic with those trying to manage their life transitions too? Having someone to walk a new path with us can be a great help. As your Community Chaplain, I am ready to offer support in your change process. You may also know someone close to you, to whom you can offer some encouragement as they cross a new border.

Why is the blue-tongue lizard also known as a gardener’s best friend? And why we have decided that February will now be known as ‘Blue-Tongue Month’? Words by Julian Ledlin.

It’s time to celebrate… The Blue-Tongue Lizard

T

his month, (and every February for that matter) keep an eye out for baby blue-tongues. They’ll be scampering around Sydney’s backyards and parks looking for insects, creepy crawlies and some warmth...

They’re cold blooded after all, and love nothing more than to sun-bake on a toasty warm rock, especially in the morning.

Blue-tongues are in the skink family and unlike most lizards they give birth to live young. A young bluetongue will survive on its own when it’s only a few days old. Now that’s independent!

Blue-tongues are harmless to humans. They use their colourful, hissing mouths to scare off predators but there is no venom in their scary looking gobs. The worst they will do is give you a nip. Kookaburras love to prey on blue-tongues. Sometimes this clever lizard will detach its tail if something’s got a hold of it. It can then escape and grow a new tail over time. That’s a neat survival trick and a sure-fire way to confuse any kookaburra!

Blue-tongues absolutely love snails, which explains why they get the tick of approval from gardeners. Need your prize lettuce crop protected? The blue- tongue is on the case. They’re like the secret service for your vegetable garden. “ALL UNITS! We have a Cornu aspersum* moving at pace towards the spinach rows.”

While eating garden pests is awesome, there is a downside… Some gardeners use poisonous snail pellets and other insecticides to protect their plants from pests.

If a blue-tongue eats a poisoned snail or slug they will be poisoned as well. So, keep nasty pest-killing chemicals out of your backyard. The same goes for mouse and rat poison. If you poison a rat, you poison the animal that eats it.

Blue-tongues can grow to 60cm and live up to 20 years.

They’ve been growing and living in Australia for about 15 million years. Luckily, they have survived in our built-up environments, but many are killed each year by dogs, cats, traffic, lawnmowers and pesticides. Scientists are worried that their numbers are declining, so we need to do our bit to help them out.

Make your garden blue-tongue friendly. Blueys love lots of leaf litter to hide in, some water and spots to sunbake.

Leave an old piece of ceramic pipe in the garden. It will give your blue-tongue somewhere to hide if it’s being chased by a dog or cat.

Despite the new set of challenges that the Omicron variant has presented us over the last few months, Australia remains well-placed to move through this outbreak thanks to our high vaccination rate and the phenomenal effort of our health care workers.

If you haven’t already and you are eligible, please book in for your booster shot – three doses increases protection from serious illness quite dramatically.

Just before the Christmas break, I honoured some of the wonderful people who work so hard for our community as volunteers or through community organisations at my annual North Sydney Community Awards.

A huge congratulations again to all who were recognised on the day – it was a wonderful celebration of the work they do.

In particular, I’d like to highlight our major award winners: The North Sydney Citizen of the Year Award went to Liz MacKinley because of her dedication, time and involvement

as Chair of Mary’s House – one of our local refuges and services for women and children escaping domestic violence.

The North Sydney Older Person of the Year is John Hayward. John has made a significant contribution to the Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Club and sailing over many decades.

The North Sydney Younger Person of the Year Award went to the amazing youth ambassadors of the Sustainable Sports Program which is an innovative program that is making a real difference in encouraging recycling, environment protection and sustainability within some of our sporting clubs.

The North Sydney Sport Achievement Award went to Rory Grace for his significant contribution to and leadership of the Northbridge Football Club.

And the North Sydney Community Group of the Year Award was given to Lifesource Community Foodcare, for providing vital assistance during COVID lockdowns when so many in our community were doing it tough.

Congratulations to our winners and nominees for the incredible contribution you are making to our community!

A new era for Hunters Hill

I hope you all had a relaxing and rejuvenating break and are transitioning back to work and school as smoothly as possible.

A new term of Hunter’s Hill Council is now under way and I am very honoured to be representing our community as the fourth ever popularly elected Mayor.

I want to start by congratulating all Councillors who have been elected in both Hunters Hill and Lane Cove. Amongst them will be 8 first time Councillors, I want to congratulate them for putting their hand up to serve their respective communities and I know they will bring a fresh and interesting approach to council. I look forward to working with you all over the next few years as we continue to deliver for our communities.

I want to bring new energy to this Council, and build on my experience representing the people of Hunters Hill for nine years on the two previous councils.

Having recently been appointed Minister for Planning and Homes under Premier Perrottet I am excited to be able to continue delivering community infrastructure across the State, and especially here in Lane Cove.

The upgrade of Bob Campbell Oval remains a priority for this Government and the $3.6 million investment commitment will remain in place for the project.

I have recognised the extensive community discussion regarding the materials that will be used in the upgrade, especially that of synthetic turf. The upgrade of the oval is a community project and as the project lead, the scope of this upgrade has been devolved to Lane Cove Council.

In the end, we all want Bob Campbell Oval to be a great facility which will meet the growing need of our community.

I know with the return of schooling this week all students are looking forward to catching up with mates and getting back into the classroom. The NSW Government is ensuring that the classrooms that they return to are safe, clean and secure with a focus on ventilation and the introduction of Rapid Antigen Testing. The health of students and staff will always be a priority and parents should feel confident that schools are safe as possible.

Once again, welcome to 2022 and I look forward to continue to deliver for the community into the New Year.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the election process and to Councillors past and present for taking on the role of representing our wonderful community.

I’m looking forward to being part of a constructive and consultative Council over the next three years.

We’re also looking forward to delivering on major projects.

This includes a proposed restoration of The Priory, and adding additional amenities to the immediate precinct and broader Riverglade Reserve, as set out in the Plan of Management for this area.

A development application for integrated development at The Priory site is on public exhibition until 16 February.

Plans are progressing to revitalise Figtree Park, as part of the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program, to deliver a high-quality open space that is accessible to all of our community.

A Boronia Park Sports and Community Facility is also within our sights, and I know our community is working hard to raise the funds required to complete this project.

I’m also keen to hear more from all in our community about what you love and what you would like to see Hunters Hill Council focus on in the years ahead.
