This month we’ve chosen articles to keep you smiling. Being as quiet as it is, there was little news, but plenty of local writers to keep us amused. Our main feature is on the incredible work the local Rotary Club does. Now that Lane Cove Fair (which is organised by Rotary and serves as its main fundraiser) has been cancelled, it’s vital to keep an eye out for its epic raffle, which acts as the replacement fundraiser. Rotary funds support many, many initiatives in our local community, so please get involved.

We also cast our eyes over to Gladesville and the Victoria Road this month as Hunters Hill and Ryde Councils are seeking feedback on a new masterplan proposal (see inside). Most agree that there are parts of Gladesville that need a new lease of life, so why not take part, and let the councils know what you think?

Finally, you’d be surprised how many people are struggling in this area right now. Many families and individuals who can normally rely on a steady income are finding it tough. The owner of TVO, Sydney Community Services, is here for all people, from all walks of life, who need assistance. Join the national pen pal project The letterbox project is a national pen pal program fostering connection and community, with handwritten letters being sent across Australia to people feeling isolated and disconnected.

In the digital age, a handwritten letter is a beautiful reminder of the power of real connection.

Something seemingly simple can have a profound and lasting impact - for both the recipient and the writer. Every letter makes a difference.

The Letterbox Project is the only national program with management and safety embedded. No identifiable information is shared, and all letters are vetted by the project’s team.

Since launching in early 2020, the Letterbox Project has grown into a national service connecting tens of thousands of people. There are now more than15,000 writers. On average, more than 500 letters are being sent each week to people in nursing homes, disability services and lonely, isolated people across Australia. Short Supply Fuelling Record Price Hikes National house prices are rising at their fastest rate in more than 32 years, according to CoreLogic. Listings can’t keep up with FOMO (fear of missing out) demand and analysts predict no slowdown in the immediate future.

Bad Habits

You’ve probably heard it takes 21 days to form a habit. It turns out it actually takes between 18 and 254 days. Back in the 1950s, plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz noticed his amputee patients still sensed a phantom limb for around 21 days before adjusting to their new normal.

He layered this and other observations into a 30 million copy selling blockbuster on behaviour change. Fact became cemented in legend.

And that’s when the problem started.

Because Maltz had specified the word ‘minimum’ before the 21 day figure. And over time, more and more people recited Maltz’s work, dropping the ‘minimum’ from ‘it takes 21 days to form a habit.’ Like a long long game of Chinese Whispers.

Let’s stick with 21 days as it’s what we know, and besides, it feels achievable, which 254 days does not. We’ve been in lockdown for nine weeks at time of writing, which is three habit forming time frames. So it feels timely to spell out those that might be worth keeping and those – not so much.

1. Delete all emails selling stuff. Better still, unsubscribe.

If you find yourself clicking through, leave the items in your basket until the next day. If you still must have that platypus shaped tea infuser, the retailer might give a discount to tip you over the line, so it’s a win win.

2. Before you buy that lockdown appliance (pie maker, bread maker, air fryer etc) check you have enough cupboard space to store it.

3. Put makeup on at least twice a week, otherwise it will clog and dry out, plus keep up your technique or you’ll forget which way to hold the mascara wand. Ditto shaving.

4. Buying Just In Case – that extra tin of tomatoes, and, admit it, a spare bulk pack of toilet tissue. I bet a pantry inventory will reveal enough provisions to get your family through the next month.

5. Having dinner for lunch and dinner – if you’ve gone from grabbing a quick sanga on the fly to rummaging through the fridge every lunchtime, you might find that extra weight hard to shift. Especially if you’ve been sitting down all day.

6. The family pooch has grown accustomed to you doing the Downward Dog in the kitchen between work zooms.

Prepare for them to go into a decline when they start to see less of you again.

7. The family’s fitness levels have become a subject of shared interest. Exercise is now on the List Of Things That Are Each Other’s Business, and it never used to be. As my 18-year-old will attest.

8. Booking a phone call. Remember when you’d call your bestie for a yarn? Now calls need to be scheduled in between an abundance of time. Go figure.

9. Organise family & friends Zoom dress ups featuring all our new hair styles and regrowth. I’m leading the way with Hobbit hair, curling over my ears and down my neck.

10. Multitasking by walking while listening to that interesting podcast you heard about is great and all, until you come a cropper, break your leg, and get thirty pieces of metal embedded in your limbs. Not only super painful and inconvenient, but a real impediment to airport security scans (whenever that happens).

When all this is behind us, we can look forward to reforming habits we’ve forgotten about, like eating out or having friends over. Heck, we might even go all out and read a book on a park bench.

interview: Helen Heggie Helen Heggie is a born and bred local who sold her massively successful business in 2009, completed a Diploma in Community Services, and put her skills, gregarious nature and infectious laugh to use as Activities Co-Ordinator for Sydney Community Services.

 You’re a Gladesville local. How long have you lived there?

I was born in Gladesville but moved around in my early 20s. I settled back in Gladesville when I started a family 15 years ago. What keeps me in Gladesville is the sense of community, the wide open spaces with the contrast of being so close to the city but having the Lane Cove River on one side and the Paramatta River on the other side, and plenty of bush land in between. The variety of wellestablished cafes, restaurants and clubs with good public transport to almost anywhere in Sydney is a bonus.  You’re now part of the team at SCS. But before you worked in the corporate world. Tell us about that...

In 1999 I started my own business called “Bullet Sportswear” which manufactured school uniforms and sportswear across NSW and QLD. I later incorporated promotional merchandise and branded corporate wear. It was a job that was fast paced and I revelled in the ability that it gave me to be creative, design a product from scratch and see the end product distributed. As the company grew it was not unusual to arrive at work at 4.00am and leave at 8.00pm with a line of couriers loading orders to get dispatched by deadlines.

It was a crazy time I enjoyed with my staff and suppliers. I formed a lot of close relationships with people in the industry which I still have today.

Once I started my family (I have two 12 TVO

sons aged 12 and 14), I found it harder to maintain that fast pace so I made the decision to bite the bullet (excuse the pun) and hand over the reins to someone else.

I sold the company in 2009 when my second son was born…literally the day after he was born. The sale took place, and all the contracts were signed in the nurses’ station of the maternity ward of the Sydney Adventist Hospital.

The midwives assured me I signed correctly on all the dotted lines. My memory of this is still very hazy.

One chapter closed and another opened while I relished in being a stay-at home-mum and wife.  You decided to make a change and becomes an Activities Co-ord for SCS - was that change easy to make?

When my boys went off to school so did I, and I completed my diploma in Community Services. I found the change in career easy as working in the community sector involved being a part of a team, and I’ve always loved talking to people young and old across different cultures and walks of life.  Describe a typical day when we’re not in lockdown?

There is no such thing as a typical day at SCS for me and that suits me perfectly. In a typical week I might be visiting clients , some in their late 90s for a cuppa and some social interaction, then I’m on a bus with up to 18 clients and volunteers taking them on day trip anywhere from the Northern Beaches to the Southern

Highlands, visiting local attractions, museums, historical sites and art festivals .

My working week ends with a BBQ with my men’s group (the “BOOMers”), usually overlooking the ocean somewhere. I’ve always said I’m probably the happiest person in Sydney to go to work on a Monday!  If there is one thing you’d like to change about community service in general, what would it be?

I’d like to remove some of the barriers from the disability and aged care sectors so they have better access to healthcare and their community, decrease wait times for available services and the endless and often complicated paperwork and criteria they need to meet in order for funding to support them.  If you’re not at work, what are you up to?

If I’m not at work I’m usually somewhere outdoors, hiking in the Blue mountains, visiting antique stores, fishing with the kids, kayaking along Lane Cove river and searching for the perfect coffee in a new cafe.

an organisation to change this. Lane Cove Rotary Club is justifiably proud to be the genesis of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and to this day is represented on its Board.

The dedication of Rotarians to their chosen causes, and their capacity for hard work is undeniable. ‘Service Above Self’ is a key Rotary tenet as exemplified by local member Lindsay May, who recently commenced his position as District Governor (head honcho in this area, to the uninitiated). This involves a huge amount of work for Lindsay, and his equally committed wife Tania. They are already doing Lane Cove proud.

Lindsay also happens to hold the record for the most consecutive Sydney to Hobart yacht races – 47 to-date and a record broken only by Covid-19. Almost every club meeting features a quality speaker presentation and Lindsay’s enthralling address in January about what happens on the high seas was not one not to miss.

The speakers’ subjects are as diverse and inspiring as Rotary itself. For instance, recent speakers have included Nick Hossack, a Lane Cove local and AFR journalist on “The Cashless Society”, Cathy Booth and her Umoja

Orphanage in Kenya, while Rob Edwards spoke about ‘Sustainable Social’. In September Lane Cove Rotary Club is looking forward to “Crime Prevention Tips” from two local constables. The calibre of guest speakers is always impressive and informative.

Among all that the pandemic has taught us, it is the necessity to keep taut the ties that bind us within in our respective communities. We are all in this together. We will get through this together. This forms part of the mission of Lane Cove to the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, and the world at large is so much the better for the existence of it.

Walk a mile in my shoes Actually, that’s probably not a good idea at the moment. With travel currently in hibernation, we in the industry are making a few bookings and still processing cancellations, refunds and rebookings.

ostly though we are looking towards a rosy future, dreaming of what might be possible when we finally learn to live with the virus.

Much of my own reflection is done while out walking – some of it on the golf course but more frequently around our local streets, through our tranquil bushscapes and alongside sparkling Sydney harbour.

I’ve always loved walking, especially when on holiday and never cease to feel grateful for the ability to walk. I’m determined to make the most of it while still capable and so have been considering the possibility of getting out the boots and getting serious about a mini-trek either here or overseas.

Tourism Australia is the governing body that has put together the portfolio Great Walks of Australia (www. greatwalksofaustralia.com.au). It’s a fantastic resource that I use regularly to reference options prior to making bookings on behalf of clients. Favourites to date are the Bay of Fires walk in

Tasmania, the Maria Island walk, the Arkaba Walk and the Scenic Rim Trail.

Prior to the establishment of major walking trails in Australia, New Zealand has long been the go-to destination for outstanding “tramping” journeys though the experiences are somewhat different. (www.newzealand.com/au/ feature/great-walks-of-new-zealand/) Tracks such as the Milford Sound, the Hollyford Valley, the Queen Charlotte Sounds and the Abel Tasman Park walks, like their Australian counterparts, have long offered the choice of walking independently, or walking with a daypack and having your luggage carried on ahead of you.

However the quality of the accommodation is, I believe, generally vastly superior this side of the Tasman.

eith and his friends would provide the local GP with a steady supply of fish in return for a school sick note.

After years as a merchant seaman travelling the world, including picking up refugees from Shanghai in the late 1940’s, Keith returned to set up a seafood wholesale business and married the beautiful Sydney University hockey blues, physiotherapist Judy.

He and Judy built their family home at Seaman Street Greenwich.

Keith began sailing skiffs at the original Greenwich Sailing Club site while Judy picnicked on the river with their children. Keith was instrumental in relocating the Greenwich Sailing Club to its current location.

As President, Keith and Judy invited parents of Greenwich Primary School to bring their kids to the club on Sundays to learn to sail. By the mid 1970’s it was a thriving community club.

Keith spent many active years at Middle Harbour Yacht Club including becoming Commodore, notching up numerous Hobart and off shore races and many charity sailing events.

During this period Keith and Judy built their dream home above the Bay Street wharf and Greenwich Flying Squadron, equipped with boat shed, pontoon and access to his moored boats.

In their later years Keith and Judy would sail every Wednesday night at the Greenwich Flying Squadron, Bay street, and when Keith’s sailing days were over he could still be seen setting the course each week for the twilight race.

Whenever estate agents would hopefully ask Keith if he was ready to sell, he would always say “put a price on paradise”

Go ahead… make my school day To the parents of children who are currently remote learning, I salute you. You are the silent, plate-spinning heroes of this pandemic. To the children who are putting up with their parents on their case 24/7… my heart goes out to you.

It must be like having local law enforcement watching your every move; patrolling the halls of your makeshift educational compound like a band of power hungry, scholastic militants. Issuing warnings, handing out fines…a world of stakeouts, stings and sentencing.

Busting my 14-year-old the other day for watching Dude Perfect videos instead of writing an essay on the merits of aquaculture, it made me question my approach to it all.

Post-bust, I felt like a battle-worn cop from a 70s TV show.

You know the type - the trash-talking, scotch-drinking, lonely cop on the brink of retirement and psychological collapse.

“Thought you’d rot your brain with some inane videos, did you? Not on my watch, pal.” Next, the obligatory verbal skirmish that leaves us both annoyed and exasperated.

Needless to say, the only learning my son does in the following hour is discovering new and colourful words to describe me.

Being the fifth interaction of its kind for the week (it was still only Monday), it made me think about other parents and what sort of cop they might be.

The Highway Patrol Officer The home school highway cops are a force to be reckoned with. They sit and wait like spiders; they know their patience will be rewarded. An alert is sent from Jasper’s teacher: “Calling all cars. Calling all cars. Jasper has not submitted any work in the last two days. Sad face emoji.” The turbo diesel BMW screeches into action. Sirens, lights, and a gritted smile roar down the freeway. The kid’s a gonner.

After a quick pursuit and stern lecture, Jasper’s bank account is missing a zero and he’s three points in the hole.

On top of all that, there’ll be no screentime until all fines have been paid and all work is up to date. You’ll never win against the highway patrol.

The London Bobby The London bobby thinks he’s well liked in the home school neighbourhood. He patrols his beat like it’s 1966, swinging his baton and twirling his moustache. His “Allo-allo-what‘ave-we-here-then” catchphrase bounces whimsically off cobblestone footpaths and his persistent whistling of show tunes is jaunty and bright. But don’t be fooled, he’s not really into the razzle dazzle of Broadway… he’s into nicking young scallywags who aren’t doing their work! Get caught by a bobby and you might get a warning for a first offence, but if you get too cocky with this charming cockney, he’ll throw you in the nick before you can say, “core blimey,” especially if he’s had a long day of wall-to-wall Zoom meetings.

The Corrupt Cop Also known as the “Just-give-it-here-let-me-do-it Cop.” This questionable member of the constabulary has no regard for the integrity of the force. He is a law unto himself, hellbent on sending his offspring to the top of the class while receiving kickbacks in the form of chores around the house.

He takes smug pride ripping through 20 maths mentals questions while waiting for the kettle to boil. “Here you go son, submit that, then come help me in the backyard.” The corrupt cop knows no bounds and his backyard has never looked so good.

Good Cop / Bad Cop For kids lucky enough to have two parents in the watchtower, the Good Cop / Bad Cop routine might be a familiar policing tactic. It’s a tried and tested performance, effective on perps and pupils alike. Bad Cop bursts into the interview room and sweeps a coffee cup off the table. He demands to know why the kid doesn’t understand ‘integers’ despite going over it a thousand times. He accuses the child of talking to his friends on Discord during class time. The child, unaware of his rights to a lawyer, soon becomes a shrinking, traumatised mess. Bad Cop storms out for some air. In walks Good Cop. She offers a shoulder to cry on, some soothing words and a cigarette. Once the child has stopped sobbing, a confession is signed, and Good Cop leaves the room. She high-fives Bad Cop on her way back down the hall.

Like any good 70s cop show set on the mean streets of San Francisco, here comes the epilogue: These are indeed strange times we’re living, and while they probably won’t be repeated any time soon, they won’t go on forever. Kids are not adults, their ability to time manage, prioritise, and focus on work is extremely limited. When it comes to memories from all this, our kids will have plenty. Clear, visual reminders that will flicker front and centre in their hearts and minds for decades to come.

These memories of lockdown will outlive their ability to find the hypotenuse of a triangle or the area of a sphere.

Such memories will benchmark our patience as parents during tough times. They will be a lasting testimony to our relationships and what it means to be human. What those memories will be are up to us adults to help cultivate. So, in an effort to look after your good selves and those around you, hand in your badge and gun to the captain, it’s time to retire the policeman within. Your kids will thank you for it, and who knows, they might just learn a thing or two along the way.

A vision for a new Gladesville

It’s a village and a main artery to the CBD that requires a 21st century injection to update it, revitalise it, and bring it in line with the needs and desires of a growing, diverse population.

Local community members are being urged to contribute to a new vision for Gladesville.

n a recent interview with comedian Carolyn Swindell, she explained why she has spent the last 15 years living in Gladesville. “I love my neighbourhood,” she told us.

“I hardly use my car; everything is so close. There’s always someone to say hello to and everyone is looking out for everyone else’s kids. It’s more than a neighbourhood, it’s a community and I really value being part of that.”

As Carolyn says, there is a lot to love about Gladesville; its proximity to the CBD, its tree-lined streets and beautiful mix of architecture and its access to bushland and Parramatta River.

Steps have already been taken to revitalise the area, as Hunter’s Hill Council Acting General Manager Nick Tobin explains, “We have been working with the local residents and businesses, the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Ryde, with whom we share the suburb of Gladesville, on

placemaking initiatives such as laneway activations, street beautification, public artwork, business promotion and local networking.”

However, residents and local business owners will tell you that the retail centre, comprising four blocks on Victoria Road, bookended by Pittwater Road and Junction Streets, is dated, tired and in much need of a refresh. It also presents a major opportunity to cater for new residents, businesses, and open spaces for all generations to enjoy.

A masterplan As part of the Hunters Hill municipality and the City of Ryde, throughout August, and also running into September, Hunters Hill Council has, and will be, seeking public feedback on what a new Gladesville masterplan could look like.

It’s a timely process. Gladesville is on the rise as a desirable suburb for families and people of varying cultural backgrounds. It is a truly metropolitan area: the ‘parents and homebuilders’ (aged 35 to 49 years) category makes up almost a quarter of Gladesville’s population, while data also shows major growth in people with Chinese and Irish ancestry.

The approach undertaken by Council is certainly ambitious. There is a purposeful drive to change the area and to re-develop and update the Gladesville town centre for public benefit, rather than for development interest alone.

The draft masterplan, which breaks down the area into four blocks, was put together by consultants GMU Urban

Design and Architecture and allows for housing for mixed incomes, good access to community facilities, public transport and new employment opportunities, as well as large and small retail and a community anchor such as a library/community centre. A landscaped park, an urban piazza and meeting places or informal green space is also at the heart of the new vision - much like what has been achieved in Lane Cove with The Canopy.

Gladesville Shopping Village forms part of one of the blocks earmarked for redevelopment. Feedback from Council, the community and stakeholders is that there is a desire for Gladesville to have a good-sized supermarket with ancillary retail and services, including restaurants and cafes.

The perspective of a local Local resident Catherine Schiller echoes the thoughts of many in the local area, noting that she would like to see underground parking, lots of community space and lots of outdoor dining, as well as linkages between businesses on Victoria Road and Gladesville Shopping Village, potentially through an enclosed glass overpass such as at the one at Gordon. “(We) would definitely benefit from a nice shopping centre,” Catherine said, adding, “I totally understand we have to have progress and we have to have development and we have to keep evolving.

“I just think they need to be clever with the design.”

“I’ve been here for a long time, in this strip,” he said. “We do all the right things, spend money on our business to make it look nice.

“But you need something to attract people to the area…a lot of people have this idea that there’s nothing in Gladesville. They get in their car and drive to Drummoyne or Balmain or Lane Cove.”

“If you go to other suburbs like Lane Cove, they did this outdoor area, people walk around, there’s a play area for the kids … it’s created that nice vibe,” he said.

Public feedback will form part of recommendations to Council for finalisation of the Gladesville Masterplan.

What happens from here?

A consultation period began in August and will run until midSeptember. Submissions will be assessed before a draft masterplan is refined and finalised and draft planning controls developed, which is expected to be in early 2022.

These will be considered by the Council and the NSW Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Environment before the masterplan and draft planning controls are placed on public exhibition, which is expected to be in mid- to late-2022.

Following assessment of any submissions and a report to Council, new planning controls need to be gazetted before development applications can be lodged by proponents.

This is expected to occur from late-2022 onwards.

Once the planning controls have been gazetted and come into effect, a landowner/developer can lodge a development application with Council. The redevelopment of the Gladesville town centre will be proponent driven, in accordance with the masterplan and planning controls set

by Council.

you’ll discover nesting boxes and signage with information about some of the birds and mammals that call the Lane Cove River home. Many of these animals rely on hollows for shelter. In urban areas, mature trees that provide hollows are limited. Nesting boxes in parks or household gardens are an important alternative providing the shelter and safety these animals need to raise their young.

Due to a track closure further along Ventemans Reach you will need to return back to Blackman Park.

Ventemans Track: look and listen for the sights and sounds of life along Lane Cove River. Take your phone and enjoy a different reason to QR code as you scan codes along the walk to listen to the bird calls of the Golden Whistler, Red-browed Finch, Sacred Kingfisher and the Spotted Pardalotes.

Burns Bay and Tannery Creek: Burns Bay Reserve and Tennyson Park offer pleasant waterside, park and bush valley walks. Most walkers start at Burns Bay Reserve however the walks can also be accessed from Tennyson Park (off River Road West, College Road North or at the end of Best Street) or at Linley Point Reserve along Burns Bay Road.

Creek, which has cascading water, pools, caves and rocky outcrops to admire. You’ll notice native flowers and Grass Trees are dotted throughout the reserve. Night birds such as the Powerful Owl and Boobook are sometimes found roosting along here and Geckoes hide in the sandstone crevices. The upper end of the creek is popular with Brush Turkeys. This walk connects to Yangoora Bushland near the Lane Cove River.

Tannery Creek wetlands provide important habitat for ducks and turtles.

To the right of the boat ramp, follow the aqueduct across Burns Bay Reserve to a wooden bridge crossing Tannery Creek at the mouth of the channel. Turn left and follow the seawall in the front of the unit blocks and into the remnant bushland surrounding historic Carisbrook House.

Explore the adjacent Linley Point Reserve or continue across the park to Burns Bay Road. Cross Burns Bay Road at the traffic lights or alternatively for good river views, walk up View Street turning right into Linley Place and right again into The Crescent.

At the children’s playground at Garraway Lookout, use the footbridge to cross Burns Bay Road then detour left to Cunninghams Reach foreshore reserve. Here you can relax or picnic with the gas barbeque while enjoying the tranquil beauty of the Lane Cove River.

Aboriginal heritage and as you walk, you’ll brush past mangroves and wetlands as you follow the creek upstream. A great place to stop for a picnic is at the waterfall and ‘Magic Bridge’, a natural stone bridge named by local school children. This pretty walk will lead you through bushland lovingly restored since the 1970s.

Batten Reserve: Head out on a peaceful, ferny walk along Stringybark

Gore Creek: This trail, which starts from Bob Campbell Oval, features the peaceful Lillypilly Falls, accessible on a short, steep side-track. Keep your eyes out for the vigorous Water Vine which grows in a tangle along the track and depending on the time of year, you will often find harmless Golden Orb Weaving Spiders clustered amongst the lower tree branches. This walk also connects to the bush tracks in Lane Cove Bushland Park.

Traffic Signals Update: Works to improve pedestrian and motorist safety at the River Road West/Northwood Road/Longueville Road (‘The Diddy intersection’) are almost complete.

Last month Council’s contractors moved the poles and traffic lights to their new locations and the new phasing for the intersection was introduced. At the time of print there were some final minor works being completed to finalise improvements to this intersection. Council worked with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to develop a proposal to improve the safety of this intersection with the NSW Government providing a $1 million grant towards the upgrade of this intersection. I look forward to updating everyone of the official completion.

Tambourine Bay Picnic Tables: The upgrade to the picnic settings at Tambourine Bay Reserve is now complete and ready for locals to return when restrictions are eased.

Playground upgrades: Residents near to Helen Street Reserve and Tantallon Oval were recently asked for their feedback on upcoming playground upgrades. These will be undertaken this financial year and once the community’s feedback is reviewed our landscape designers will get to work coordinating a construction plan.

Improved access to Manns Point Bush Track: Council received funding through the Greater Sydney Crown Land Open Space Activation Program to upgrade the sandstone steps to the foreshore from Manns Point Lookout.

This has improved the access to the foreshore and will be complemented by nearby bush regeneration work which will be carried out on the cliffs requiring specialised rope access.

Weed Spraying: A reminder to check Council’s website for our seasonal weed spraying.

Batten Reserve track entrance: We’ve upgraded the track entrance to Batten Reserve from Mindarie Park. This is to make the surface easier to walk on and to better define the bush from the park. Plants from our community nursery were used alongside the track and existing large sandstone blocks to help soften the edges and create a buffer planting to the park.

The current roll-out is via a voucher system which entitles the recipient to have a restraint checked, refitted or fully fitted by a designated local Authorised Restraint Fitter. Talking Dentistry This month we’re talking restorative dentistry with Dr Andrew See who combines passion, artistic flare and extensive knowledge of dentistry to answer any questions you may have. He has advanced training in aesthetic and implant dentistry.

Reader’s question: “I’m conscious that I have missing teeth when I smile. I’ve been told that the only option is to have a denture because I can’t have dental implants to replace my missing teeth because of bone loss and low sinuses. Is there anything that can be done so I can have dental implants?”

Dr See says: Wow, great question. So much to unpack here in a short space. I will try and do it justice. To dramatically simplify the situation, we have a dental implant which is like a screw and we have bone where we have the missing tooth, which is like a piece of wood. Inserting the screw into a piece of wood where there is insufficient dimensions would result in an unstable or loose screw and its subsequent failure. It is clear we would need to build more wood to have a stable and secure screw. So if you do have insufficient bone to have implants, we need to build more bone. In short, internationally there has been massive advancements in recent times in techniques and materials for rebuilding bone that I would have only dreamt about when I placed my first implant in 2006.

Let’s look at a case that we completed where there was bone loss and a low sinus.

David came to see us because of advanced gum disease around his front tooth which had significant bone loss. He had his upper right premolars extracted over 10 years ago. He had also been told that he wasn’t a candidate for implants due to the bone loss and a low sinus. He wanted to improve his oral health, improve the colour and shape of his teeth and he didn’t want a denture to be his only option.

THE PROBLEMS: • Advanced bone loss around the front tooth • Low sinuses causing lack of vertical bone which can make it difficult to stabilise implants • Loose and painful teeth • Discoloured and uneven teeth

When it is not just a simple fall…

Understandably it is difficult to think of anything else but Covid-19 nowadays. Its ramifications are endless.

Digging a little deeper show there is a flow-on effect with many other medical conditions being undiagnosed and therefore not managed properly.

One of these conditions relates to bone health.

Literally meaning ‘porous bones’, osteoporosis is characterised by the deterioration of our bones leading to low bone mass. This starts a downward spiral of reduced bone strength, which predisposes to fractures from minimal trauma or injury (ie an impact from a fall from a standing height or lower).

These fragility (or osteoporotic) fractures are common, with more than half of women after menopause, and a third of men over 60 years, expected to experience these during their lifetime. Furthermore, those who have had one of these

fractures are at least twice as likely to have another similar fracture, especially within the next two years.

Hip and wrist fractures make up the most common types from falls. In 2015-16, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Wellbeing, 87% of new hip fractures were due to minimal trauma. Conversely, spinal (vertebral) fractures often are silent with up to 75% having no symptoms or signs.

But in reality, with increasing age any bone can and does fracture from being fragile. These fractures are also linked to earlier death, especially within the next 5-10 years (with a threefold increase in men compared to a twofold increase in women).

So what can be done? The key is to optimally prevent, identify and manage the underlying osteoporosis.

Here lies the first problem. Osteoporosis is a silent disease until that first fracture occurs. Prevention should be attempted with lifestyle measures, including: Optimising calcium intake. Drinking a glass of milk and eating a tub of yoghurt or block of cheese every day (or

Shoulder pain Our shoulders are very flexible joints and their dexterity allows us to use our arms effectively for activities such as reaching, carrying, writing, dressing, general activities and most sports. When we have pain or stiffness in our shoulders it can be problematic.

Understanding why a shoulder is stiff or painful is the key to returning your shoulder to good function. The pain can be from the shoulder, neck, upper back regions, muscle weakness or muscle tightness. Sometimes problems with biomechanics in the hips or legs can be related to shoulder dysfunction.

People often get concerned that they may have a tear in their rotator cuff and may need it surgically repaired. Rotator cuff tears are so normal most people have them without knowing as they do not cause problems. If they do cause problems physiotherapy should be the first course of action as research tells us the outcomes are the same for both options at 1-year post injury and physiotherapy is also cheaper without the possible side-effects of surgery.

equivalent). Aim for a moderate amount (800-1200mg daily).

Take a 600mg calcium supplement with a large meal if diet is inadequate. Some studies have shown excessive calcium intake increases cardiovascular risks but this is not conclusive.

Adequate safe sun exposure for Vitamin D. Due to the ongoing Covid lockdowns, more time is forcibly being spent indoors. People with fair skin, aim for six to eight minutes of sun exposure just before 11am or just after 3pm most days in summer or around 20 minutes at midday most days in winter (double these time amounts for darker skin types).

An oral supplement can be taken if this is not feasible (eg institutionalised in nursing homes). Vitamin D is difficult to get from diet.

Cease smoking, avoid excessive alcohol (less than three standard drinks per day), maintain a healthy body weight (underweight is an osteoporosis risk; obesity may increase fracture risk in falls) Weightbearing exercises (ie: walking). Again, more conscious effort is needed during Covid lockdowns.

Fall-reduction strategies including improving balance, increasing muscle strength, optimising vision, rationalising medications that may predispose to falls (eg for high blood pressure, sleeping tablets) and assessing for environmental hazards in the home (e.g. tripping on throw rugs, slipping on tiled floors) The above recommendations fall into the ‘common sense’ category. Unfortunately, there is little evidence that these will lead to reduced fracture risk. Alone they are not sufficient to reduce further fractures especially in those with established osteoporosis.

This leads to the second problem. Even once a fragility fracture has occurred, studies have shown that less than 30 per cent of patients are properly assessed and treated for the underlying osteoporosis (and any other causative factors) Rheumatologist Professor Lyn March understands this care gap all too well, having been instrumental in establishing the Osteoporosis Refracture Prevention Service at Royal North Shore Hospital, which provides a systematic co-ordinated approach to improving treatment and preventing further fractures. ‘These fractures lead to decreased quality of life and loss of independence’ she says, ‘this is shown in the older ages after a hip fracture, with 25 per cent requiring relocating to a nursing home’.

Early diagnosis is vital, and can be made solely on the evidence of a fragility fracture or based on the findings of a bone mineral density (BMD) measurement, a non-invasive test which takes only around 10 minutes. Once the diagnosis is established, BMD testing is also important for monitoring disease progression and response to treatment. Underlying causes for osteoporosis must also be considered and excluded, including thyroid and parathyroid disease, coeliac disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Medications to treat osteoporosis are safe and effective in reducing risk of future fracture by up to 70%. There are many options including oral tablets and injections. Speak to your doctor which might be the best choice for you.

With World Osteoporosis Day approaching next month, it is a timely reminder to not forget about your bone health.

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Linda Gleeson Can you describe to us the type of artist you are, and the medium you work in? I work in acrylics. My paintings are always layered, and I find acrylics a great way to achieve those layers. I also like to paint quickly and with energy so the drying time with oils doesn’t lend itself to that, although I love them.

What motivates you to ‘create’?

It sounds cliché, but nature. The colours, light and form of the Australian landscape and coastal areas never gets old. It’s a constant source of inspiration, everywhere I turn I see a painting in my mind. Translating it onto canvas is the hard part. My work reflects coastal and country as I spend part of my time in the Southern Highlands.

Where did you learn your craft, or is it something you were blessed with?

I am self-taught. I studied art in high school and always had a creative bent but never pursued it professionally. A life changing event led me to pick up the tools again and I found it healing and meditative.

Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators? Very much so, we are lucky to have such an amazing local Gallery which curates amazing work.

The Lane Cove area has always nurtured great artists and will continue to do so. I am Vice President of the Lane Cove Art Society which also is very active in promoting visual arts and holding community events for interested people of all experience and backgrounds.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts, and if so, how would that manifest?

Absolutely, participating in creative pursuits is always beneficial to people’s wellbeing so there can never be too much support.

Use wire to secure the cups to the hanger (nstead of hooks) as the wire allows you to manipulate and adjust the mugs position.

What I watched on TV… Stuck at home in lockdown has at least provided plenty of opportunities to watch TV. Here then are some of the recommended shows that have kept our go-to TV man Stephen Miller occupied.

Finding Alice (Foxtel)

Engaging six-part drama from the UK is about Alice (Keeley Hawes) who has to deal with the fallout following the sudden death of her partner. While it is about death, grief and deceit, Alice is a beautiful character who refuses to play the classic grieving widow. The final episode ends on a cliffhanger with many questions left unanswered. A second series has been commissioned.

The White Lotus is a captivating, character-driven, satirical, whodunnit/ comedy/drama. The insightful storyline explores how the wealthy cavalierly demand from the less fortunate, inflict power and how easily that is triggered.

Visiting The White Lotus might not be a relaxing holiday, but it is one you will remember for some time.

Based on a true story, Dr Death follows the medical malpractice inflicted by American neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch.I struggle to understand how Duntsch could get away with this for so long but I suspect it has something to do with the behemoth that is the American medical system. The program reveals how it does seem to protect hospitals and insurance companies a lot better than it does patients. Highly watchable TV.

It’s very different to Springfloden (which I reviewed last month) with Julia, this time playing an investigative journalist. After falling in love with the charming but dodgy director of a bank she’s investigating, a struggle ensues as she tries to separate her professional and private lives. Blinded is a classy show performed by the best Sweden has to offer.

Chicken People (ABC iView) Chicken People is a warm-hearted documentary about people who breed and raise chickens for exhibition. The film focuses on three main characters – Brian, a musical theatre performer from Missouri; Shari, a homemaker from Indiana; and Brian, an engineer of high-performance race engines from New Hampshire. Thankfully it defiantly resists the obvious urge to become condescending and remains far more enjoyable and entertaining because of that.

BACKYARD RANGER It’s time to fact check the Cicadas They’re the gentle giants of the insect world, sound tracking our Aussie summers with their powerful song. Did you know it’s only the males who sing? Words by Julian Ledlin They are calling out to find a mate… and he can belt out one heck of a noisy love song, 120 decibels to be precise! That’s the same as having a chainsaw going full blast right next to your ear holes! These hordes of hypnotic hooligans don’t have much time to find Ms Right… There’s predators about!

Predators of the winged variety. Birds love cicadas because they’re super tasty and easy to catch, the harmless old cicadas don’t put up much of a fight!

SAFETY IN NUMBERS! Have you ever noticed that cicadas tend to emerge and sing in groups? Well that’s a survival strategy, the more cicadas that are about, the sooner the birds get sick of eating them! It’s like eating hot chips, they’re great to begin with, but after a while… “yeesh, get these chips away from me!” So, a few cicadas end up in bird’s beaks, while the rest find a mate and get started creating the next generation.

Eggs are laid in trees and after a few weeks they hatch. The tiny (and extremely cute) wingless cicadas fall to the ground and dig down!

CICADA WISDOM Cicadas have been adored and respected for thousands of years. They have played an important role in Indigenous, European and Chinese culture, they’ve also fascinated the most famous of philosophers. Cicadas really are great teachers. They are gentle, they transform themselves in tough times and they sing their song for the whole world to hear! No wonder they’ve been successfully doing their thing for 200 million years!

UNDERGROUND IS WHERE IT’S AT! Cicadas thrive underground for years. Down in the darkness they live like kings! Feasting on the sap from tree roots, shedding and re-shedding their skin, getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Australian cicadas spend around seven years underground. Some American cicadas live underground for 17 years! When they’re ready, usually after some spring rain, they crawl out of the ground and into the big, wide, scary world. Then they shed their final skin, the brown shells you find on tree trunks. They now have wings!

They’re all set for the thrilling finale to their long, busy life.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Did you know that most of our cicadas were named by children? This is a good thing because adults could never have come up with such awesome names, like Black Prince, Yellow Monday, Double Drummer or Floury Baker. In far north Queensland there’s even the Bagpipe Cicada! Its abdomen expands and shrinks like an actual bagpipe! I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take requests though, however hearing a cicada bang out ‘Amazing Grace’ would be quite fun.

CICADAS AS PETS? While Cicadas are harmless and clean it’s not a good idea to keep them in a shoebox with some leaves. Cicadas need to be constantly eating the sap from trees as they look for their mate. Enjoy them from a distance, you’ll be rewarded in seven years time when their healthy offspring emerge from the ground! How old will you be then?

By Harry Curby Glowing silver moon my friend, silent way up on high, speaks in unheard whispers, while I glance into the sky, neither praise nor condemnation, no judgement of any sort, beaming light the contact, re-assuring and expecting nought.

No-one is ever friendless, having a loyal friend like that, breaks barriers through the ether, across divide of spaces endless, none ever alone come nightfall, if one’s trusting and believing. offers comfort yet nothing tactile, but sense of trust and meaning.

Night-times dark and often cold, and after they are spent, new crescent moon’s first quarter comes, on horizon heaven sent, each night still growing larger, star of Eve follows close by, well on way to waxing gibbous, to become grown adult in the sky.

Earth tilts and turns to finally greet, the new day’s rising sun, Moon takes it’s leave with stars in tow, now retiring for work done, returns to light up next day’s night, to delight sky-watchers all, lover’s hearts stirred and all their kin, standing to look in thrall.

Listen Our cat, Prince, is loving lockdown! Prince, who is a very loved part of our family, now regards his three humans to be at his beck and call night and day. He has a range of techniques to get our attention. When outside wanting to come in, he jumps onto the window sill of my study, so I can see him looking soulful. If I choose to ignore him, he will scratch and meow at the back door nearby, with increasing intensity. At night-time when he is inside, wanting to go out, he employs more dastardly techniques.

He knocks our treasures over, taps sleeping faces with his paw, and even jumps onto our daughter! He begins gently, but if we ignore him, he communicates with more and more determination. Maybe, this sounds familiar to you, and maybe it’s not a cat you’re thinking about…

Our communication skills are under the spotlight during lockdown. Being forced to live together much more intensively, will show up some cracks in our relationships.

Many households are experiencing tension, frequently aroused by poor communication. Learning to adapt to life in a more difficult environment creates substantial challenges for everyone. In pre-marriage counselling, new couples are encouraged to adopt a ‘we’ mentality to life. How do they create wins for both of them? Good communication skills are required to produce satisfying outcomes. Many people are good at expressing what they want, but fewer listen as well. Effective listening takes more than hearing the words spoken. Listening from the heart goes deeper: tuning into the emotions and non-expressed words, voice inflection and volume, reading body language and facial expressions. Encouraging a conversation partner to say what is difficult for them to express, with affirming nods and noises, using open, sensitive questions, while suspending judgement, kindly elicits more specific information.

When Prince meows, we don’t always run to him. When he waits patiently for us to come, he gets a cuddle or a reward. Likewise, listening well doesn’t mean agreeing with everything we hear. However, listening patiently to understand each other’s viewpoint tends to help defuse a situation. Taking time to cool down and reflect upon our response, gives an even better chance to weigh our desires and rights with others’ fairly.

Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry.

ngel slid the sausages out of the pan onto the plate. The sizzling fat spattered her arm like a sparkler as the greasy logs slipped into place beside the mound of mashed potatoes and peas.

She placed the plate on the plastic tablecloth in front of Wayne. He barely looked up from the telly. He was having a one-way conversation with the quiz show contestant as she spun the prize wheel. ‘Com’on … stop at the fecking boat!’

The aluminium walls of their caravan creaked as he thumped the table when the wheel clicked past the boat and stopped. LOSE A TURN. Summer had been so long. It was exhausting, especially at night when not even a breeze whimpered off the sea. Angel was trapped in this oversized tin can. She opened the fridge and took out another beer. She knew the drill. It was worth her sanity and her unbruised skin to keep the peace. She held the curved dewy bottle in her cleavage to cool herself a little before twisting the stubby into its holder and handing it to Wayne.

His only thanks, a fleshy belch, as he passed her the empty. She placed it next to the plastic garbage bin. Six dead marines since he’d been home from work.

She moved her chair to the breezeway and slumped into it.

The tin can they lived in had two temperatures: stinking and freezing.

Tonight, it was stinking as the mozzies pooled around the screen door waiting to slip into the annexe with its scent of sausages and sweat. Angel pulled her t-shirt up over her loose breasts and daubed her face. January could be as cruel as her husband.

‘I’m going out tonight, Wayne, I’ve gotta get out of this heat.’

Wayne’s eyes flickered from the telly. He stopped sucking his beer.

‘Like hell you are.’

‘I’m going prawning down The Narrows. The run’s started. Everyone in the park’s talking about it. I borrowed a net from Jack, and seeing he’s had that stroke he won’t be prawning again. Life’s cruel, ain’t it.’

She pondered at the hopelessness of Jack’s life. ‘At least he’s started to talk again, that’s good, ain’t it?’ her voice 36 TVO

Wayne stabbed a nugget of sausage, dipped it in the mash and peas and trawled it through the speckled tomato sauce sludge. He washed it down with half a stubby and forced a burp.

‘Stupid cow. What would you know about prawning? For one thing, you gotta get into the water, and you can’t even fecking swim.’

Angel’s head had been a mess lately. Her brain was like a jigsaw where too many pieces were pushing together. The lousy caravan. The heat.

The rough, drunken fumbles under the sheets that she couldn’t get away from. Koala. That’s what his friends called him. They cracked-up at their crass in-joke every time she was with him.

Sleep snug last night did ya, Koala?

She’d loved to have shouted, Koala’s drowned his brain and withered his willy with booze! But she never had the courage to stand up for herself. Not until now.

Angel opened The Lakes Times at the tide chart and spread it over the greasy plates. The grime blotted through the pages.

‘I’ve been studying the charts,’ she said, with as much excitement as she would allow herself to show. ‘Low tide’s in an hour, an’ that’s the best time to go prawning. Catch the little

buggers as they swim out the channel to the sea. An’ the moon’s right. Just a sliver. It’s gotta be a new moon, so it’s nice and dark. You’ll see. I’ll catch enough for a prawn supper.’

‘I’ve been studying the charts,’ Wayne mocked … ‘you gotta be kidding. You need brains to study and we both know where your brains are.’

He flicked his fingers between her thighs and massaged. ‘How do I know you’re not gonna meet one of your fancy fellas,’ and he clamped his hand as she winced at the sudden pain.

‘Well, I’ll cramp your style. I’m comin’ with you.’

Wayne went outside to their small storage locker attached to the annexe.

He fossicked around for his waders and prawning net. He hadn’t used them in years.

Angel changed into her boardies and beach shoes. She tied a bit of rope to an old foam beer cooler and stuck it in the car.

Wayne revved the engine.

Everything revolved around his needs.

His time. Just before Angel locked the sliding door, she took an officiallooking envelope from the cupboard under the sink and propped it against the tomato sauce bottle in the middle of the kitchen table. She rarely got mail. Everything was addressed to Wayne and even if her name was on the envelope, he still opened it. But this time it was different. She’d picked up the mail this morning at the caravan park office after Wayne had gone to work, and hidden it. Now, it was waiting for her return. The envelope of possibility.

NSW The car park at The Narrows was buzzing with the 70s music from hippypainted Kombis and the duff-duff of the local teens’ hotted-up cars. It was the end of the school holidays and families were picnicking in the twilight on the grassy verge of the channel trying to get some relief from the heat.

Angel loved walking along the boardwalk at night. It was the closest she could get to being on holiday.

Wayne followed her towards the boat ramp, past the meaty smells of charring shish kebabs cooking over

A group of teenage boys kicked a soccer ball across the grass, just missing Wayne’s shins. ‘Bloody dolebludging terrorists,’ he spat, kicking the ball into the channel.

As the tidal water rushed from the lake to the sea, gangs of kids ran along the channel’s asphalt edge calling out to the prawners whose torches were already spot-lighting the water. Look … there’s one … I can see its eyes. Get it! Aw, you missed. Quick … there’s another one!

Angel stopped to breathe it all in.

And to take stock of what she was about to do.

Low tide. Fingernail moon. The pulsing, watery vein rushed before her beckoning like a macabre, interactive game. The water flowed beneath the arching road bridge further up the channel and braided darkly around exposed sandbanks. She watched as prawners, with their torches and nets, worked the shoals like lines of aliens straining against the tide. Hunting.

Wayne didn’t wait for her. He slid down the mossy boat ramp and steadied himself in the shallows. In the darkness, he looked around.

He watched for a flashing light. For someone signalling his wife.

Angel looked at the rushing water before her. Wayne was right.

She could barely swim. Prawning was not her most brilliant idea. She’d been dumped good and proper years ago in a mangled surf. She had never forgotten the panic of death by drowning. It was the stuff of her nightmares. Watery sand straining through her eyes. Clutching for air.

Disoriented. Flailing.

She psyched herself up and, using her long-handled net like the balancing bar of a tightrope walker, she crab-footed down the boat ramp.

She took it slowly, not wanting to slip and be slung another loud, coarse insult from Wayne.

She waded into the water and tied the foam beer cooler to her waist that would hold her catch of prawns. It floated behind her. She turned to face the onshore breeze that had worked its way across miles of ocean. It fanned her blonde hair off her face as she

savoured the cool caress of water around her thighs.

‘Well, where is he?’ Wayne stood in front of her. The water slapped around his waders. He gripped his prawn net like weapon.

‘Who? ‘Don’t play dumb with me, bitch.

Remember, you’re not that smart.

So, which scab out there are you meeting?’

Wayne scanned the channel.

Nothing. He couldn’t see who the prawners were. It shitted him because it was now too dark to see anything but the constellation of bobbing torch lights along the channel of black water.

Angel gave a sad laugh.

‘If that’s what you want to believe, then go ahead. But the only affair I’m going to have is with the water!’

Wayne grabbed the torch out of her hand. His beer breath whipped her face. ‘You’re pissing me off, woman!

Prawn on your own. You and that stupid contraption hanging off your waist. You’re such a loser. Just be ready to go home when I’m finished!’

Wayne trawled through the stringy weed that fringed the edge of the channel stabbing his net now and then at the elusive prawns. She watched him stagger from the shallows towards the deeper, murky water under the bridge. She imagined the cold, inky water swilling around his waders, rising, rising.

He didn’t bother looking back at her. He didn’t see Angel lurch in the darkness and disappear into a hole.

He didn’t hear her gurgle or see her hand flail the wet roof above her.

Angel bobbed up, gulped and sank as the sand beneath her feet tumbled further into the hole, taking her with it.

A hand reached down. It grabbed her and pulled her by the shoulder out of the water.

‘Thought you might be in trouble,’ said the soccer-ball teenager. ‘By the way, your husband’s a wanker.’

Angel held onto his arm as she struggled for breath.

‘Thanks. I thought I was a gonna,’ she gasped. ‘I’m not a good swimmer.’

‘And you can’t prawn on your own. Especially without a torch,’ the teenager laughed.

Amir and his brothers waited for Angel to catch her breath. They wanted to take her back to their family, who would look after her while she recovered, but Angel was determined.

She still wanted to prawn, so the four worked as a team sharing their torch beam as they trawled the water.

Angel squinted and looked upstream. She couldn’t see Wayne.

She knew he would kill her if he saw her with the boys.

Fish nibbled at Angel’s legs as she dipped and scooped her net towards the orange-eyed prawns that darted from the shafts of light into the safety of the dark. Even with the broken weed and cigarette butts drifting by in the soupy channel water, Angel had never felt such freedom.

Within half an hour she had a good catch stored in the foam beer cooler that floated behind her. Plenty for a celebratory feast.

She had done her homework. Her calculations were spot on. On cue, the tide changed direction and a powerful dervish rushed into the channel from the sea.

‘Time to leave,’ said Amir as the water surged around them. ‘The prawns have finished running. It’s too dangerous out here now.’

Angel waded back to shore buoyed by the warmth of her new friendships. As the boys helped their parents pack up their picnic gear, Angel walked back to the boat ramp where she had last seen Wayne.

She sat and waited. Like she had been told.

As that is roasting, sauté a couple of chopped bacon rashers in a heavy based pot. Add 2 cups of polenta and 1 litre of chicken stock, working quickly until a soft porridge consistency. Turn the heat off and cover. Leave for 5 minutes to absorb and soften, add 100gms butter, freshly chopped

A message from our Acting CEO Branka Ivkovic

L

iving under lockdown is hard for us all, and yet it is extraordinarily heartening to see how our community is findings ways to remain connected and even create new connections. In my 5km radius an ever-growing movement is underway, Spoonville, Forkville and Rockville have been established while happiness trees have also seemly grown overnight throughout the neighbourhood. These are such great symbols of positivity and community.

It’s vital to focus on the positives right now. Here at Sydney Community Services, we are grateful to have found plenty of positive news in what has been a hard month for us all.

Most importantly, 100% of our eligible staff received their first jab and 75% are now double vaccinated – not just our nurses and support staff but also those keeping the engines running in the office. It is such a relief to know that we can continue to serve the community safely.

Our services are keeping up with demand well – nursing, home delivered meals, in home respite and assistance, linen service, gardening and home maintenance are still operating in person, with the meticulous infection control measures in place.

We know our community misses the more social aspects of our service offering. Our social groups, day trips and the hub activities in Lane Cove, the Meeting House and Hunters Hill Hub unfortunately remain on hold.

However, we remain connected virtually. Give us a call or join any of our wonderful Zoom sessions.

In exciting news, for the first time ever, we have created a home delivered wellness and activity book that will keep the mind busy and spirits high. Get in touch if you wish to receive one.

As always, we can’t thank the community enough for its amazing generosity. The Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill transported five carloads of groceries and hygiene products to us, Bunnings Gladesville shared $400-worth of PPE, Ryde District Mums delivered seven large boxes of fresh and non-perishable foods, and local individuals have kept our shelves well stocked and our cupboards brimming with groceries for emergency food packages.

The current lockdown is taking its toll on everyone.

All families and individuals are feeling the effects of lockdown in one form or another.

We know in these uncertain times income stability has been greatly affected for many members of our community and financial burdens have increased for those who perhaps have never had to ask for help. Please know that Sydney Community Services is open to people from all walks of life who find themselves in need of help.

Our staff are not only here to provide tangible support such as food packs, energy and water vouchers, but to also help you connect with further support available.

ne of Lane Cove’s most familiar and well-loved faces, Mary Lazzaro, has passed away, aged 88, leaving behind husband Joe, sons Rick and Paul, daughter Lisa, seven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Sadly, the lockdown restrictions meant that only 10 people could attend the funeral, so the family has requested this notice to alert Mary’s many friends and acquaintances in the community.

Tribute to

Mary Lazzaro 1933 to 2021

Mary and her husband Joe lived in Lane Cove for 60 years and run the shop ‘Lawrence Fruit and Vegetables’ on Longueville Road from 1963 until 1996. After 15 years living above the shop they moved to College Road South, Riverview.

A gentle, kind and generous lady, Mary was married to Joe for 62 years. She grew up on the family farm, which is now the site of Macquarie University, and became a primary school teacher at Santa Sabina College, Strathfield before getting married.

Mary was very active at St Michaels Church and was renowned for being thoughtful and young at heart. Her door was always open on festive holidays and the family would host large gatherings for lunch and dinner.

She was also a big fan of the opera, loved trips to Mudgee and family picnics.

After they retired, Mary and Joe took part in many Sydney Community Services activities including the Day Trips. They made many friends on seniors’ outings and luncheons, and often meet up with former fruit shop customers.

RIP Mary. You will not be forgotten in our hearts or our memories.

Well Done Lane Cove on our Fantastic Rates of Vaccination!

The Lane Cove Electorate is setting the pace across Sydney. Over 70% of people in our area have received their first dose of the vaccine and over 50% are now fully vaccinated.

I think that it is now clear that the path out of lockdown is through the uptake of the vaccines and it is great to see that the figures pertaining to vaccination rates has demonstrated a community understanding of this.

Like many of you I’m looking forward to 13th of this month when fully vaccinated adults will be able to gather outside in groups of 5. I want to encourage everyone in Lane Cove to make the most of the great public spaces that are on our door step and enjoy a well-deserved picnic with friends.

The wider NSW Government is also keen on encouraging citizens to make use of the public spaces available to us and has devoted considerable resources to rejuvenating dozens of parks across the state. Just recently the Government has partnered with Lane Cove Council to inject over $250,000 in Mann’s Point Park at Greenwich. The project will involve upgrading walking trails and promoting native vegetation to enhance the recreational opportunities available at the Park. I think the last few months has inspired in all of us a new found appreciation for the amazing spaces in our area.

I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate Katharine Gillis for being named the North Shore Young Volunteer of the Year. Katharine has gone above and beyond during COVID-19, the Girl Guides leader has worked tirelessly to make sure that her Guides enjoyed their online meetings as much as they could. Well done Katharine! Lane Cove is very proud of your efforts.

Supporting our community

This month we recognise R U OK? Day. This is a key issue at any time but is of great significance this year, given the challenges that our community is facing with COVID. The national day of action, which in 2021 falls on Thursday 9 September, reminds all Australians that every day is the day to ask “Are you OK?” if someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and downs - because a conversation could change a life.

This applies to family and friends, but it is equally as important for colleagues and neighbours.

While public health orders have limited opportunity for faceto-face contact, we can also stay connected with others

by Zoom, social media, text or picking up the phone to call friends and family. While we can’t be in touch in person, seeing or hearing a friendly face or voice on the other end of the line can provide an antidote to loneliness.

December local government elections

The local government elections, which were due to be held on 4 September 2021, have been postponed in response to the recent outbreak of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.

Council elections will now be held on 4 December 2021.

The NSW Government is working with the Electoral Commission and NSW Health to implement a comprehensive plan to allow voters to cast their ballot safely.

This means that Council and its committees are continuing to serve our community for another three months until entering into caretaker mode in November.

It is with great enthusiasm that I continue to serve you as Mayor for this extended term.

The COVID pandemic has thrust Australians into the most difficult of circumstances in our living memory. Yet it is in these times that the very best of human nature is so often on display. This is perhaps best epitomised by the monumental effort being undertaken by our local GP’s and pharmacies to support residents.

Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccinations are highly effective in saving lives, reducing the severity and symptoms of COVID and helping cut transmission rates. I know that all residents would join me in thanking the staff of our GP’s and pharmacies for the fantastic job they are doing in keeping us all safe from this virus.

It has been inspiring to see the dedicated work of our GP’s, who have been vital in delivering the COVID vaccine to Australians. The selflessness of all the staff and doctors at our GP clinics throughout this pandemic has been just so important as they administer the vaccine and keep our community safe.

I have now had both doses of AstraZeneca and there is huge relief that comes from being fully vaccinated. Using the Medicare app or MyGov you can now easily load up your vaccination record into your smartphone wallets, so you have a record easily at hand.

It’s also become easier to get a vaccine, with dozens of pharmacies across the north shore now dispensing AstraZeneca to those aged over 18 and joining the incredible work of our local GPs and Commonwealthfunded and state vaccination hubs. I have been encouraged by the conversations I’ve had with pharmacies in our electorate who have said that many residents have rolled up their sleeves and received the AstraZeneca jab. From September, pharmacies will help start the rollout of the Moderna vaccine as well.

I also want to thank those many residents that have embraced the importance of the vaccine program. Our local community has been leading NSW in ensuring we are getting our COVID vaccinations. Recent data released by Operation COVID Shield, the federal government’s vaccination program, shows that the Northern Sydney Region has had the highest vaccination rate of any in the state and is in the top five nationally.

Vaccinations work. They are saving lives and keeping us safer – so let’s keep going!

Australia’s vaccine rollout is ramping up with more supplies arriving from overseas and local pharmacies are joining GP clinics to administer the vaccine. The AstraZeneca vaccine is available to residents aged 18 and over, so please book an appointment with your GP or pharmacy if you are eligible.

Angela fiddled with the key in the dark to unlock the caravan. She turned and thanked the constable who had dropped her home. She handed him the blanket that he’d wrapped her in to shield her from the shock. She was finally alone. And free.
