interview: David Rowe

David Rowe, a Lower North Shore local, and his brother Nick opened their first Pet-O store in Brookvale over 14 years ago. Their newest store opening now in Lane Cove and it joins a family of 14 other stores across Sydney and beyond. Throughout Pet-O’s growth it has remained a family-owned and run business and both brothers are actively involved in the day-to-day. In fact, if you walk past the Lane Cove store you will probably see David there painting, installing racking and putting up signage. Here he answers some questions about his family life, and life around Lane Cove.

You’re a North Shore local – tell us how long you’ve been here, and what keeps you here…

I’ve always lived close to Lane Cove, starting in Neutral Bay, then Balmoral, Greenwich and Cammeray. I’ve always loved being near the water, the green space and the low traffic levels compared to the East!

Pet-O is opening in LC. Why LC over any other suburb? Were you aware that dogs almost outnumber people here?

I always wanted a store near home but there aren’t many huge 1600m2 sites in the area. We feel so lucky to have found this fantastic store right in the heart of the village. My friends will finally see one of my stores!

Do you own a pet/s? Tell us about your furry friend…

My doggie Maltese Shaka died in March. We’d had him from just before opening my first store in Brookvale, 15 years ago. We hope to get a new fur family member later this year.

What do you/your family get up to when you’re not running Pet-O?

My wife Jacquie and I have a six-year-old girl - Lilly, so weekends are spent playing in parks. Lil helped me paint the new store last weekend. She asks every day when she can come and finish it off!

Tell us about plans for the store – aside from retail, what can we expect?

We’ll have adoption days, community events, DIY dog wash, vet check-ups and we’d love a doggie cafe if anyone’s interested?
