Welcome distractions

hello Creative visualisation can be a powerful tool. For the last few days, I have been imagining myself relaxing at home on Mother’s Day minus the continuous sound of my children squabbling. Later, in this visualisation, my husband reveals that he has been hiding culinary skills and whips me up one of my favourite indulgences - a big, fat, dirty burger. I feel like I could be the Roy Lichtensteinesque lady on the front of this month’s cover – a pop art queen ravishing a burger with zero regard for cholesterol.

The link between my creative visualisation and the content in this month’s TVO is tenuous at best, but here goes: our main feature reveals how Lane Cove’s King of Kebabs has become the first takeaway kitchen in Sydney to give over spare capacity and down time to the preparation of foods for ‘virtual restaurant brands’ that use delivery platforms such as UberEats or Deliveroo. It has provided a positive boost in income for them and helps them to sustain a local workforce - a fantastic story of local success.

Elsewhere we have included some simple Mother’s Day recipes and other ways to celebrate the matriarch in your life, while we have news about the launch of a “Library of Things” and information about the Lane Cove History Prize, plus much, much more.

news Local housing provider to boost groups and programs for young people A drive to engage and empower young people living in social and affordable housing in Lane Cove and Hunters Hill will soon launch under the name Youth 4 Unity.

Community housing provider St George Community Housing (SGCH) has been successful in obtaining grant funding through Youth NSW to establish youth groups across their regions, which includes Sydney’s Lower North Shore.

Partnering with the BYC (an award winning SGCH youth group in Bonnyrigg), the groups will plan and implement a range of stimulating, dynamic and educational programs.

The programs will focus on providing

opportunities for holistic growth and development, while empowering and supporting youth to develop lifelong skills that will help achieve their full potential.

The diverse programs will include barista and first aid courses to improve employment opportunities, team building activities to develop relationship leadership skills, and recreational activities such as surfing and camping to support health and wellbeing and personal development.

These will culminate in an ultimate Youth Festival that brings youth together from across Sydney to showcase their achievements and acknowledge their efforts and contributions.

SGCH provides a place to call home for around 11,500 people in over 6,700 properties across the Sydney metropolitan region, including homes in the Hunters Hill and Lane Cove LGAs

Community choir LaVoce back singing live!

Following a switch to online singing when Covid restrictions prevented large gatherings, LaVoce has resumed proper rehearsals with members getting together on April 20 to bring the choir back to real life.

Between 25 and 33 members of the choir joined the choir via Zoom for the entire year prior to April, led by Sarah de Jong, musical director and soprano, and Heather Hargreaves who signs alto parts for the choir.

However successful LaVoce Virtual was, the choir longed to be back together face to face at rehearsals in the Living and Learning Centre.

“Singing is so good for health and it is fun,” says president and convener Adrian Lee. “We sing popular songs and have a great community atmosphere.”

of six 2020 Hyecorp Community Grants. Each worth $2000, there will be two available in each of the Lane Cove, Willoughby and Ku-ring-gai areas.

Applications close 30 November 2020 with judging taking place in early December and cheques given to the winning community groups prior to Christmas.

Hyecorp have been giving back to the local community for many years through community grants, donations, sponsorships, and volunteering.

It has supported more than 35 different community organisations across Lane Cove, Greenwich, Willoughby, and Ryde.

Special new playspace for Riverglade Reserve

Trent Zimmerman MP honours Hunters Hill Probus

The first sod has been turned at Riverglade Reserve on the site for a new all-abilities Livvi’s Place playspace.

Hunters Hill Probus carries the honour of being the first Probus club to have launched in Australia – and now carries the added honour of celebrating 45 years serving the local community.

In recognition of this, MP Trent Zimmerman recognised the club in a speech to the House of Representatives this month.

“In my time as member for North Sydney, I have seen the important role Probus clubs play. To see so many of our community’s retirees come together, make new friends, listen to wonderful guest speakers and stay active is just so encouraging,” he said.

“Probus is a great organisation. I encourage retirees living in my area to think about joining. I’m sure you won’t regret it. I want to wish the Hunters Hill Probus club a very happy 45th birthday and many more years of success ahead,” Mr Zimmerman added.

Young community members who have been an integral part of the design and consultation process where on hand to break ground on the site at the end of March, along with representatives of Hunter’s Hill Council, the State Government and Touched by Olivia, the charity behind the Livvi’s Place national network of inclusive playspaces.

Evander Conroy said he looked forward to having a playground on the site where everyone can play. Lola Dominguez said she was excited.

“I think the best part is that everyone can have fun there,” she said.

The Government will provide $200,000 for the Livvi’s Place at Riverglade, with the Council matching the funding with a further $200,000.

Hunters Hill Mayor Ross Williams said it would be a welcome additional to the local area.

“This is a very important time for us in Hunters Hill, to have our first inclusive playground,” he said.

Touched by Olivia director and co-founder John Perkins said his organisation was absolutely thrilled to be working on the first inclusive playground in Hunters Hill.

He said since the first of the now more than 40 (to-date) Livvi’s Place playgrounds were installed about 13 years ago, so many parents had said how much the playspaces had changed their lives and made it so easy to get out with their children.

“It really does have a huge impact on the community,” he said.

A group of Lower North Shore locals are starting up THE SYDNEY LIBRARY OF THINGS – based at the Coal Loader Centre of Sustainability - and they need your help!

A

Library of Things, sometimes known as a tool library, is a collection of extremely useful but only occasionally used objects/tools that can be loaned out to the community for a short period of time.

It’s like a normal library but with things instead of books!

Objects can include tools, gardening equipment, children’s party gear, toys and games, art, craft supplies, musical instruments, and recreational equipment. The first tool libraries began to appear in the USA during the second world war. One of the earliest being started by the Rotary Club of Gross Point Michigan in 1945, established with the hope that it would improve dexterity in the local youth and ease the scarcity of tools in wartime.

The not-for-profit project is run by volunteers who want to make a difference in their local community. North Sydney local, Jordan Moy was keen to get involved when he heard about it. He says, “borrowing tools saves people money, saves resources, saves space in our homes and saves waste. With lots of people living in smaller spaces in North Sydney, and an increased concern for environmental sustainability, a tool library just makes sense.

Bridget Kennedy, Lane Cove local, and one of the committee members driving the project, is passionate about grassroots projects that promote sustainability and build community. “These types of cooperative projects that actively encourage sharing (either of skills or resources), help connect people and ultimately strengthen

broader community connections. They add social cohesion and build social capital by increasing a sense of belonging within the broader community. This in turn helps to build resilient and sustainable communities”.

A library of things doesn’t exist without ‘things’, so if you have some good quality, new or gently used equipment taking up space, The Sydney Library of Things would love to give it a home.

One of the lovely things about libraries of things is that because they’re created by donations from the community, each one is unique. Items do need to be donated to the library, rather than lent.

This allows for free loaning of as many items as you need on a weekly basis. The scene plays out like a thriller: you pull out your phone, and see an ad for hammer toe correctors.

Wait a minute, you think. Didn’t I just have a conversation about hiking socks designed to help hammer toes? Like, a real conversation, spoken aloud? Is my phone … listening to me?

Why, yes, it probably is. When you use your default settings, everything you say may be recorded through your device’s onboard microphone. And the increasingly hyper-developed algorithms do the rest. While we might like our social media feeds curating content we’re interested in, it’s still creepy.

If it all seems a bit Big Brother to you, I hate to tell you but it’s here to stay. Most of your household devices have inbuilt Smart capabilities. Whole departments at appliance manufacturers are given over to making them Smart. If your toaster has an electric bar that diminishes as your toast browns, it’s smart. Won’t be long before you can call out – ‘Hey Google! Toast both sides until golden brown!’

Algorithms have their place though, my favourite being the daily play lists my music streaming service creates for me. Spotify is expert at throwing music into your feed (because you listened to… you might like.. etc). They’ve even got a Radio function, where you can pick a song you like, and a playlist of similar songs will magically appear.

If you’re keener on listening to music on vinyl, CDs or through the radio then you’re not alone. Last year, vinyl sales outpaced CD sales for the first time. That all the machines that pressed the records were dismantled when CDs came along is definitely hampering their resurgence.

But beware the bringer of false algorithms. A friend recently bought some bedding, not from an online marketplace but direct from the supplier. Her since you shopped with us… follow up email promoted, amongst other things, a machete sharpener, a hose reel and a prisoner costume.

The mind boggles who the right target market for that unique combo would be, but we might leave that one there.

Virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant make our lives easier by helping us make grocery lists, create reminders, and even set the mood just by shouting at the tiny device. But nobody’s perfect, not even artificial intelligence.

Like the Indian dinner shopping list fail featuring garam masala, ginger, coriander and babies – could be tasty but only if you’re a flesh-eating giant (bay-leaves).

Sometimes the answer bears no relation to the question at all and you can’t work out what they thought you said. As one person who asked, ‘how long does it take to cook baby back ribs’ was answered with ‘Captain James Cook had six children.’

Hopefully none of them were thrown into the pot.

There’s the sleepy dad who tried to set a phone reminder to ‘feed the baby’ and got a reminder to ‘defeat the baby’.

Or the Amazon shopper who discovered it really does have everything on checking their list – toilet paper, napkins, God (sent direct to your house door to door with free two-day shipping.)

I still handwrite a shopping list, but I take a pic on my phone (super easy to enlarge). I find it’s quicker than the call and response Hey Google/did you mean… a hundred times a day. But it doesn’t matter how you make your shopping list, one way or the other. Give me the algorithm that does my shopping for me and I’ll be happy.

interview: Dan Graham Theatre director, neuro-diversity advocate and Lane Cove local

 Tell is about your ties to Lane Cove?

Born and bred in Wollstonecraft and still living in Lane Cove.  Where did you go to school, and did you find it to be a good launchpad for your future career?

Mum was assistant principal at Willoughby Public where I attended years 3 and 4, so education and literature were all important in my childhood. Caught the theatre bug at an early age and have never been able to shake it!  If you were to give yourself a job title, what would it be?

I’m a Trained Theatre Director and Diversity Arts Advocate.

Among my various advocacy and creative jobs is a position as Co-Chair of Artists with a Disability for the Media and Entertainment Alliance Australia (Actors’ Equity). My identity as Neuro-Diverse is central to who I am… and what I do!  Your job is diverse and incredibly engaging.

Can you describe it in less than 100 words?

As director, I interpret and facilitate the most engaging audience experience by collaborating with my actors and other creatives. As advocate, I educate, inspire and reframe people’s expectations so more voices (and amazing stories) can be heard!  You are very open that you have a Neuro-Diverse Disability – can you explain what that means and how being so has affected your career choices?

It’s dyslexia for me – but that’s more an opportunity than a challenge! Hi-tech - and even low-tech like writing - can be a test. For instance, I’m responding to these written questions by dictating to a colleague via Zoom. He’s writing them down with a pen and paper to later transcribe and email back to you! Ha ha!  Your work has taken you to many amazing places including New York, London, Chicago and Barcelona.

What is it you most look forward to about coming home?

Because so much of it fired and inspired me (especially a scholarship residency at the Atlantic Theatre Company in NY working on “The Mother”; and in the UK with a Create NSW fellowship to study neurodiversity in the arts) my greatest thrill is coming home and sharing the knowledge.

 Tell us about ‘Mad or Bad’ - an investigation on neurodiversity in Shakespeare. Are there classic examples of neurodiversity on show in particular characters?

It’s a creative development with Bell Shakespeare. Very cool! So many of the Bard’s baddies are maddies! Macbeth hears voices and sees ghosts and Edmund is a psychopath, not just a bastard! But with a modern eye to personality and neuro-diversity research, there is the opportunity not to pathologize but to better understand many of Shakespeare’s most interesting characters - clowns, villains, fools and tragically flawed anti-heroes - as just a couple of degrees off ‘normal’ – whatever that is!  Explain your involvement with deaf artist Sam Marin’s autobiographical show “SAM I AM”. The show sounds particularly ground-breaking…

It is! A production of the Antipodes Theatre Company in Melbourne (which explains my commuting!), I’m directing the play written and performed by Sam Martin, which explores the experiences of a boy from the inner Western suburbs of Sydney as he learns to embrace, accept and define his identity. It’s set on the eve of his big move to Melbourne, and is a deeply personal story recounting pivotal events of Sam’s life, including his journey with hearing aids and speech pathology, learning Auslan, and choosing to come out as gay following the 2017 marriage equality plebiscite.  Your mission in life appears to be achieving diversity in the arts and theatre, and ensuring they are accessible to all. How do you go about that?

It’s a work in progress, but the key is to plonk yourself in the middle of it all. I can’t divorce my directing work from my access work – it goes hand in hand.

Having directed for Short+Sweet (“the biggest little play festival in the world”) for many years, I was delighted when this year’s festival director Nick Hardcastle approached me to join his new Diversity & Inclusion initiative as part of its special D & I committee. Already a wonderful melting pot of creative people, I feel it’s important Short+Sweet (like all theatre) works hard to represent all Australian voices.

I continue to travel around Australia and (Covid-allowing!) internationally to work on anything! But the alchemy of Short+Sweet allows me to meet new creative people as writers and actors… so the sky’s the limit!

I’m on my way to Perth, my first flight in 13 months - and I’m a little nervous, my excitement tempered by the trepidation I experienced 50 years ago. My decades of learned experiences, wherein I took more flights per year than I rode buses, are in the cloud somewhere. In limbo. By Adrienne Witteman.

everal of our group of 40 golfers have already landed in Perth and I’ve not heard a word, save for a messaged pic of one happy camper with cocktail in hand. So things must be in order. Most will arrive today, Sunday 18 April. And at midnight tonight WA will open its borders to Queenslanders so they too, on the verge of being non-starters but 72 hours ago, will also arrive albeit a day later. Thus barring any east coast outbreaks of Covid, we are set for a happy eight day sojourn.

So far so good.

Check-in is a breeze. The airport is still relatively uncrowded and there are plenty of working self-check in and baggage drop terminals. However, there are few staff on the ground and there’s a longish queue for assisted check-in.

Some things never change. Almost everyone is wearing masks, and social distancing is easy with so few people.

So far so good.

Seats in the lounge are Covidspaced. It fills, but not to crowded status. Free newspapers are now passé but there is still a complimentary, now plastic wrapped, considerably skinnier version of the QF magazine –stamped Please Don’t Leave This On The Plane.

Self-serve food and beverage are fond memories as we wait in albeit short queues for service from behind Perspex screens. So far so good.

The boarding queue resembles days of old. There is seldom more than half a metre between queuing parties though

The aerobridge appears less crowded than previously so entry is controlled.

So far it’s okay.

Once on board we are requested to stay in our seats, with no more than two to gather near the toilets. The CSM advises that masks are to be worn throughout the flight and this is strictly monitored in economy but half the business cabin remain maskless after the meal service and are not admonished by the crew. Of course, flight crew remains masked at all times.

Service is efficient and competent without any overt friendliness, almost robotic in its delivery. Masks mask smiles. I miss this. Any sneezing or coughing is muted. So far it’s okay.

Welcome to Perth. A few minutes before touchdown we are advised to have our G2G (Good to Go) passes ready. Also that passengers will disembark in groups as specified by the WA Police. Today it’s 50 at a time and so all of business and then some from economy exit, 10 minutes later another 50 and so on. Planes cannot disembark until police and health are ready. Clearly pay the extra for upfront economy seats if you must get off quicker. Masks are compulsory in the airport and we are urged to maintain a safe distance.

and we are then directed to a booth for G2G scanning. I am asked if I have been overseas in the last 14 days (I wish!) and my husband, if he has been overseas or to Queensland. It’s a no for both of us and we are off to collect our luggage. Things are definitely getting better!

15 minutes later we leave the terminal and grab the first taxi, a nonetoo-clean vehicle that reeks of cigarette smoke. Welcome to Perth indeed. The driver has to pay $4.00 to leave the airport, gold coins only as there is no pass system in place for taxis. How antiquated. He complains about the lack of business for the last six months and I remind him, possibly a touch unsympathetically, that you get what you vote for … “Ah but we have been kept safe”. I reply that NSW has too but without shutting down the state. This ends that thread of conversation.

30 minutes later we are in our hotel room, mostly unpacked, with a cup of tea brewing. It feels good to have flown again, and to be back in Perth – even though I still harbour fears that any outbreak back east could see us committed to our room for 14 days. I tell myself to think positively, for my industry relies on consumer confidence to travel.

And I begin to look forward to my flight to Queensland in May.

New food ordering innovation boosts local business A Lane Cove business is among the first in the country to take part in a new concept giving hope to hospitality businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

T

his time last year life for Lane Cove businessman Sandeep Reddy was far from enjoyable.

Feeling the brutal full effects of Sydney’s COVID-19 pandemic, Reddy could only stand by and watch as sales at his Longueville Rd kebab shop plummeted by more than 50 per cent after strict social distancing measures were put in place and the city was forced into lockdown.

The situation was made worse by the fact Reddy also owns two other businesses – an American burger shop in Neutral Bay and an Italian restaurant in Botany – both of which were also haemorrhaging money after being similarly impacted.

“When the state government began loosening up measures again we started a delivery service at both our Lane Cove and Botany sites,” he says.

“While this helped a little bit, it was still really hard financially. Most of our staff live locally and I really wanted to keep supporting them. I was conscious that I didn’t want to cut down their wages but I knew that if they lost their jobs they were unlikely to find a replacement because of all of the businesses that were shutting down around here.”

Six months ago conditions took a turn for the better when Reddy – who has 30 staff working for his business - agreed to partner with an Australian start-up that was offering an antidote to the consumer behaviours brought on by the pandemic.

Called Grabox Kitchens, the Australian-based food technology platform has been credited with offering a lifeline to under-utilised kitchens in traditional dine-in restaurants, hotels, pubs and clubs by making the most of their spare capacity and excess staff to produce virtual ‘delivery-only’ brands.

These specialty brands currently include over 50 different cuisines created by drawing on data gathered from food delivery platforms. What this means is that the cuisines on offer can be paired with existing restaurants based on their preferences, specialties and location.

Customers are then able to order these brands using online delivery platforms such as UberEats Deliveroo, Menulog and Doordash.

Grabox founder Dhruv Kohli says the start-up was designed to create a positive social impact by helping small businesses create additional revenue for themselves, and more jobs for their local communities.

“With our model, everybody wins - the restaurants instantly receive additional orders and increase revenue, maximise the use of their existing labour force; customers have additional choice and get to support their local economy; we scale to accommodate restaurant partners in more areas around the country.”

Many owners like Reddy had put their whole lives into their business, only to watch their kitchens “fall quiet” last year, he says.

The 50th Anniversary of a local uprising Locals Sue Ingham and Shauna Forrest explain how the event marked the formation of the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society

T

his year marks the 50th Anniversary of a local uprising to save bushland in Lane Cove and which led to the formation of the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society and we will hold several guided walks in May to celebrate. In 1971, a group of concerned local residents held a meeting when the Country Club approached the Lane Cove Council with a plan to extend the golf course into the eastern part of the Osborne Park valley.

So many people attended the first meeting they spilled out of the hall on Pottery Green, as the Society records in its book, Beyond the Untidy Fringe. The attitude to natural bushland in an urban environment was changing: it was no longer seen as scrub to be cleared for development, but a precious asset.

The Bushland Society and Gore Creek Valley campaign then began. Within 4 days over 1000 people signed a petition against it. The newly formed Society raised money to support the court case to prevent the development, but the Council finally settled out of court.

Bushland Park was declared a wildlife refuge under National Parks & Wildlife Service in 1980 and was listed on the National Estate in 2000 because Society members Ray and Elma Kearney discovered its rich endowment of Hygrocybe fungi, and called in expert mycologist Dr Tony Young.

In response to persistent advocacy by the Society, the ‘Bushland Management Advisory Committee’ (BMAC) was set up in 1990 to provide advice to the General Manager on bushland management within Lane Cove.

On Sunday 16 May (at 9am) native plant experts will guide 2-3 special walks of 1,5 hours each in Bushland Park to celebrate where it all began and those who bravely saved the green lungs of our suburb for future generations. The walkers will hear from persons involved in the history and management of this bushland.

Researching History in Lane Cove

Henry Ford famously declared, “History is more or less bunk”. (Interview in 1916, cited

by Hirst 2019). History was “tradition. We don’t want tradition.” However, Ford preserved the records of his own career as an industrialist and later created his own museum, which would “give people a true picture of the development of the country”.

I

ronically Ford revealed a considerable interest in preserving history, though he was selective about what he documented, dismissing what he imagined was irrelevant.

He thought he was directing his own generation into new historical directions. But like any historian, Ford was selective. All historians are selective, because they choose their area of interest and interpret the information they gather. Ford focussed on the industrial might of America, with reference to the car industry.

One of the pleasures of researching history is the freedom the historian enjoys in selecting a subject, and creating some interpretation of it. The pleasure for the reader lies in learning how historians interpret the subjects they select.

The Lane Cove History Prize The Lane Cove History Prize offers scope to historians to document many aspects of the history of Lane Cove.

For example, in 2020, Susan Ingham explored the history of women’s sailing in Lane Cove, showing women have excelled at the sport. By contrast, in 2018, Penny Ransby Smith’s essay focussed on local children. Inspired by the diversity of children in two local schools, Penny discussed the variety of people now living in Lane Cove, as represented by the children dressed for their Harmony Day celebrations.

A different theme was offered by Simon Cole in 2017, with an oral history about Les Heap. Born before the Second World War, Les worked at Cockatoo Island, building 22 TVO

ships for the Royal Australian Navy. He settled in Lane Cove, and received the Lane Cove Council Citizenship Award in 2011.

In 2016 Margaret Clark told the story of a returned solder from the First World War, Arthur King, who brought his French wife to settle in Lane Cove. She was home sick for a time, but she came to terms with it, and they raised a family, enjoying a good life in Lane Cove.

In 2019, there were two winners. Jill Curtin told the story of Charles Henry Rosman, ferry master, who worked on ferries on Sydney harbour. He was involved in a serious harbour accident in 1938, though later absolved of criminal neglect. Susan Ingham documented the case of a talented if eccentric architect. The house he built in Mary Street Lane Cove was highly regarded, though the house, like its architect, proved to be difficult.

What do they all have in common?

A World War I digger and his French wife; a group of intrepid women who mastered sailing; a bunch of primary aged children from a variety of ethnic and cultural and backgrounds; a ferry man; an eccentric architect and the house he built; and a skilled tradesman who worked on Cockatoo Island. They had two things in common. Firstly, they had contributed to the life of Lane Cove, and in some cases they still do so. And secondly, they were chosen from the range of potential subjects to bring to our attention, and worthy of recognition.

It’s time for this year’s historians to commence work on researching their entries to the Lane Cove History Prize for 2021. Details will be found on the Lane Cove Historical Society website at:

Future use of the outdoor space at the Lane Cove Golf Course Over the past decade, Council has been exploring ways and means of meeting the sport, recreation, health and lifestyle needs of current and future residents.

ast year the community was asked to provide feedback on concept plans for a new Sport and Recreation Precinct on the curtilage of the current Lane Cove Golf Course.

The proposed facility includes indoor multi-sport courts, outdoor courts, a stage, program space, cafe and restaurant and car park. In response to positive feedback, Council agreed to continue with plans for this facility which sits on the land at the edge of the golf course.

As part of that consultation process, Council had also proposed future options for the golf course including a driving range, putt-putt golf and the retention of a nine-hole golf course.

In response, the community asked Council to consider all options for use of the open space at the golf course.

The golf course is the largest open space in the Lane Cove Council area, making the decision about its future use an important one. To help understand the community’s views on the best use of the outdoor areas on the site to meet our community needs now and into the future, Council is pursuing a ‘deliberative democracy’ process whereby a Community Panel is formed to deliberate about any future options for the use of the golf course.

What is a Community Panel?

The Panel’s perspectives, opinions and understandings are enlarged throughout the Panel process before they come to a set of shared group recommendations.

Who is on a Community Panel?

Members are randomly selected through an independent process that makes sure they are broadly representative of the demographics of the general Lane Cove population. An independent organisation specialising in this area has been appointed by Council to undertake the process of inviting and selecting local residents to form the panel.

What does the Panel do?

A Community Panel is tasked with a clear remit. In this case it is “What is the best use of the outdoor areas on the site to meet our community needs now and in the future?”. The Panel is given access to information and resources to help them with this activity as it evolves. At the end of their deliberations, the group will provide a report that includes an overarching vision for the site and a set of criteria that will be used to inform future decision making about uses. This is then reported to Council for its consideration.

How can I get involved?

If your household is randomly selected to receive an invitation, anyone in your household can register their interest to be involved. From this pool a smaller random selection of people will be drawn to match the broad demographics on Lane Cove.

Road Resurfacing: Council recently resurfaced Lucretia Avenue from Arabella Street to Poole Street and next will be works along River Road from Fox Street to Tambourine Bay Road which will take place over a 2-3 night period within the next six weeks.

12ft Sailing Skiff Club: Two barges are currently on-site helping to rebuild the areas destroyed by fire in 2018.

Works are well underway coring holes and adding sleeves in preparation for pouring the concrete piles in the coming month or two.

During winter the boardwalk decking will be installed and construction will start on the boat shed and dinghy storage. The works have been scheduled during the off-peak season for the club and completion is expected in September in time for the start of the sailing season.

Council has provided temporary storage facilities since 2018 and has worked together with the club on the design of the upgraded facility. The project is being delivered by Council using proceeds from insurance as well as grant funding under the NSW Government’s Transport (MIDO) program.

Plans for 2021/22: I’d like to encourage residents to have their say on the draft plans Council has for the 2021/22 financial year as well as the budget and draft fees and charges which support this plan. While there are many proposed projects, I have included a sample of some which may be of interest: • Playground Upgrades - scheduled for Helen Street Reserve, Henningham Reserve and Best Street.

• New Roundabout in Northwood construction at the intersection of River Road / Northwood Road / Stevenson Street to improve safety.

• St Leonards Public Domain Works - construction of over rail plaza and public open green space.

• Tantallon Oval- new changerooms, canteen facility, club storage, public toilets, community room and BBQ facilities for community use.

• Shared User Path – constructed from Bob Campbell Oval to Greenwich Road.

New Park and Bushwalk: This month Council will be opening two spaces dedicated to local residents. The Doug Stuart Track and the Deborah Hutchens Playground are located in Osborne Park and Longueville respectively. Locals looking to take a bushwalk or play at the new nauticalthemed park can visit Council’s website for more details.

CHOOSING YOUR PLANTS Most plants that thrive indoors are species that originate from tropical environments. They thrive in shade/bright light and enjoy similar temperatures to us humans.

Make sure you do a little research on what plants would suit the unique conditions of your home. Dont just go by the label as often these are very vague and include as many aspects as possible so as to sell more plants! Ask for advice at your local nursery or if you are unable to do this there is a lot of information online.

Greening your home to fight the winter blues.

Make your home your garden It is my opinion that you can never have too many plants in your home! I find that plants are a wonderous ever changing part of my surroundings that make me feel comfortable and at one with nature (without having to step outside!)

For many of us the winter months can be quite challenging in regard to how much time we are able to spend outside. It is often too dark, cold, rainy or just downright miserable to be out there which can sometimes feel quite depressing.

Light level/aspect... All plants need light to grow. Most shade/indoor plants thrive in high levels of indirect light.

If you are unable to provide this for your plant, you can use artificial light provided by LED lighting in your home.

Simply position under a decorative lamp or a spotlight for a minimum of 12 hrs a day (use a timer if necessary). The LED light will provide the necessary spectrums of light that the sun naturally provides (blue and red). These will enable your plant to grow.

Airflow... Good airflow keeps a plant dust and bug free.

In nature the wind and rain wash away pests and keep leaves clean. To mimic this regularly open doors/use fans to create airflow. Wipe the surface of large leaves clean to remove dust and keep an eye out for bugs especially on the underside of leaves. Mealy bugs are a very common pest that occur on indoor plants (look like small white cobwebs on the underside of leaves.) Remove with a cotton bud or spray with white oil/mild soapy water.

This is when indoor plants come into play. It is a fact that plants contribute to sustaining our air quality and also positively contributing to our state of mind!

Watering...On average most indoor plants require watering once a week. You can extend this time by using pots with ‘water wells’ which have a reservoir of water in the base, which is great if you travel, are time poor or simply forgetful!

These are a great time saver!

Many people seem to think that growing plants inside their home is a difficult task. This is not so. There are many suitable plants that can overcome the challenge of air conditioning/heating, low light levels and even neglect.

It is estimated that 32 per cent of the total burden of disease within Australia is attributable to modifiable risk factors. A ‘healthy lifestyle’ is vital to reducing this statistic, including the prevention of cancer, writes Dr Carl Wong.

BUT WHAT IS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? AND WHAT DOES PREVENTION INVOLVE? Early detection of certain cancers:

 Bowel Cancer: the second most common cancer in both men and women and also the second most common cause of overall cancer death. Recommended guidelines are to do a faecal occult test (stool collection) every two years between the age 50-74 years. Yes, its never pleasant but it’s a small inconvenience - if detected early, 90% of cases can be successfully treated. Being physically active and having a high fibre diet helps prevent. Smoking, excessive alcohol, and excessive (especially processed) red meats consumption increases your risk.  Skin cancer: Melanoma is the third and fourth most common cancer in men and women respectively. Excessive UV radiation (ie sunlight) is the biggest risk factor. People who work outdoors are exposed more so than indoor workers. Intense sun exposure in the first 10 years of a child’s life has been shown to nearly double their lifetime risk. Follow the 5 S’s: ‘Slip (on a shirt), Slop (on SPF 30+ (or higher) regular sunscreen every two hours, especially between 11-3pm), Slap (on a hat), Seek (shade/shelter), Slide (on sunglasses). Regularly check your own skin – the more you do it, the more you notice what’s normal for you. Seek prompt medical advice if you see any new or changing preexisting skin spots.  Breast cancer: the most common cancer, and the second most common cancer death in women (after lung cancer). If detected early and contained in one breast, the five-year survival is as high as 96%, but drops to 80% if it has spread to other areas (metastasise). Mammograms are recommended for women aged 50-74 years (age bracket for 75% cases) every two years. Mammogram procedures can be uncomfortable (easy to say for this male

correspondent!), but with a one in eight lifetime chance of developing breast cancer, I would humbly advise that the benefits outweigh the downsides. There is no proven method of prevention, however the risk can be reduced by lowering alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight.  Cervical cancer: low rates due to our vaccination program and screening methods which now includes human papillomavirus (HPV) detection. Approximately 90% of Australians are infected with (HPV) throughout their lives, with only certain types increasing this risk. Have a cervical screening test (the old ‘pap smear’) in sexually-active women every 5 years from the age 25-74 years.  Prostate cancer: the second most common cause of cancer in men, and the third most common cause of cancer death overall. One in six men will be diagnosed by the age 85 years. There are no proven measures to prevent. That being said, the PSA blood test (usually done from age 50 years), is the most common current way used to detect for, as early detection and treatment can significantly improve survival (the five year survival rate being 91%).

With ever increasing knowledge and scientific advancements, we do have the opportunity to prevent and detect many illnesses and maintain good health.

Compare this to the deadly bubonic plague (‘Black Death’) of the mid 1300s with an estimated 25 million death toll. Back then a common treatment was called the ‘Vicary Method’. This involved plucking a live chicken and applying it to the skin lesions of an affected person; once the chicken got sick, it was washed and then placed back on the patient until either the patient or the chicken recovered! I don’t know about you, but compared to this ‘remedy’, I would much rather concentrate on preventive health – give me that faecal occult test instead please!

What is thrombocytopenia, the rare blood condition possibly linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine?

The federal government has asked Australia’s medical and vaccine regulators to urgently consider a possible link between the Oxford/ AstraZeneca COVID vaccine and rare blood clots.

Scientists have termed the condition “vaccine induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia” (VIPIT). But what does this actually mean, how significant is the risk, and what are the implications for Australia’s vaccine rollout — which is currently relying predominantly on the AstraZeneca jab?

A

s indicated by its name, VIPIT is a form of something called thrombocytopenia.

Thrombocytopenia is a condition whereby the numbers of thrombocytes (very small blood particles, or platelets) are markedly reduced. Platelets form clots to stop bleeding, so when you don’t have enough platelets in your blood, your body can’t form clots. This can lead to excessive bleeding.

The condition has a genetic component, but can also arise from more than 300 common medicines, including penicillin and certain pain killers. Quinine, which is added to tonic water for flavour, can also very rarely cause thrombocytopenia.

The symptoms of VIPIT can include severe headaches, abdominal pain, seizures and visual changes.

These are similar to the symptoms of thrombocytopenia unrelated to the vaccine.

In rare cases of thrombocytopenia, clots can develop in the vessels draining blood from the brain. The European Medicines Agency said it had received reports of 169 cases of brain blood clots in people who had been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shot.

In severe cases, thrombocytopenia can be fatal. There have been deaths from blood clots reportedly associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, including 19 in the United Kingdom.

VIPIT appears to present 4-20 days after vaccination, and so far, the issue has been largely associated with women under the age of 65.

So how could this vaccine potentially cause thrombocytopenia?

The “prothrombotic immune” part of the name denotes it’s caused by an over-activation of the immune system, which gives us a clue.

Platelets and COVID-19

The AstraZeneca vaccine prompts cells to make a specific part of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), called the spike protein, which the virus uses to attach to cells when infecting us.

The vaccine stimulates our immune system to generate antibodies against the spike protein, which then primes the body to mount an immune response against SARS-CoV-2, if it encounters the virus in the future.

But in some people, the AstraZeneca vaccine seems to produce antibodies that react with platelets, making them stick together, leading the blood to clot. This in turn reduces circulating platelet numbers, and hence the thrombocytopenia.

These antibodies are similar to those found in some people on a blood thinning drug called heparin.

The immune response to heparin generates antibodies that bind to platelets. This can lead to blood clots in some people, called heparin induced thrombocytopenia. As many as one in 20 patients receiving heparin develop thrombocytopenia.

Keeping in mind we’re yet to establish cause and effect, it’s a possibility that the biological mechanism by which we believe heparin leads to thrombocytopenia could be the same biological mechanism by which the AstraZeneca vaccine might.

How common is it?

Naturally occurring thrombocytopenia affects about one in 30,000 adults a year in the United States.

As for the suspected vaccineinduced kind, according to data

collated by the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand, VIPIT is as rare as one in 500,000 people. But the society notes the data are incomplete.

Different countries have reported different rates. Norway, for example, has so far reported one in 25,000 vaccinated adults under the age of 65 have experienced low platelet counts, bleeding, and widespread thromboses (blood clots).

Of course, the possibility that some of these cases of thrombocytopenia may have occurred regardless of the vaccine makes understanding vaccineinduced cases more complicated. But taken together, thrombocytopenia appears to be more common in the general population than among those who have been vaccinated.

As we continue to vaccinate the world, it’s likely small subsets of people will continue to experience this complication. Whether we can establish a causal link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and thrombocytopenia is subject to continued investigation.

Be aware, but not alarmed

Amid this ongoing investigation, some countries, such as Norway, have paused their rollouts of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Others have restricted use of the vaccine in certain groups, like Canada, which is using it only for adults older than 55, who may have higher risks from COVID and lower risk of blood clots. Meanwhile, the UK has pledged to make other vaccine options available for younger people.

We will wait to see how the Australian experts respond. But for the general adult population, we agree with the current guidance from bodies including the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the risks.

The Diverse Journey of Guy Warren • 29 April – 29 May 2021

Can you describe to us the type of Artist you are and the medium you work in?

I am a Representational Contemporary Artist working in a traditional manner in oils and wax medium using an Old Masters recipe. The wax mixed with oil creates an impasto finish giving a beautiful translucency. The palette knife is my main tool, I enjoy the way I can mix and apply the paint quickly in quite a thick layer first go, without thinking about which brush to use.

What motivates you to create?

I was diagnosed with cancer in my 40’s and after a year of treatment I decided life is too short, and to follow my passion for art. Growing up in country NSW, I am motivated by the landscape. Exploring, light, atmospheric conditions and the natural forms of the landscape. I am also motivated by the genre of still life and ordinary objects we use in our in our day to day lives.

Where did you learn your craft or is it something you were blessed with it?

Whilst attending workshops at the Willoughby Arts Centre, I was encouraged by some teachers to study Fine Arts at Meadowbank Tafe. I Completed an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts and when my children had completed their education, I started to paint seriously and joined an Artist’s studio in Artarmon.

Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators?

Lane Cove is a unique suburb.

Geographically we are right in the centre of Sydney, yet with access to beautiful waterways, bushland walking trails where you can completely forget you are in a big city. It is very good for the soul and creativity.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts and how would that be manifested?

Having one of the best galleries in Sydney (Gallery Lane Cove) and yet there are residents unaware of it, I think there should be more advertising in the form of noticeboards or banners.

It would be good to have an Art Month where local artists could give free demos in the gallery. In this day of so much depression and anxiety, partly created by technology, art is a great medium for mindfulness and expressing oneself, it would be good to have workshops related to this dilemma.

third angry wave crashed over Rachael’s head.

She spluttered and gasped for air. Her lungs were burning. Cold salt water poured down her throat. She gulped and tried to cough. Her head was up, desperate for air, but to clear her lungs she needed to face down, and would be submerged. How could the sea, tranquil and benign this morning have metamorphosed into this powerful Leviathan? The prevailing current was pulling her with callous intent out into open ocean.

Rachael began the day excited and in awe of the sea.

She’d seen it once when she was 11, on their only family holiday to Ulladulla.

Rachael now 13, Lucy 11 and their mother were staying with Aunty Sylvie and their cousins, all boys, at Barrington Tops. Two of the older boys Heath and Mark suggested a drive through the Myall Lakes region to one of the beaches.

“Wear your togs. There’ll be nowhere to change,” Heath said as he grabbed some beach towels. Aunty Sylvie cut lamb and chutney sandwiches and packed fresh peaches from their fruit trees for lunch.

“Don’t be late home kids,” she’d warned, “we’ve got friends passing through and they’ll stop for dinner.” Visitors were a rare treat on this semi-isolated farm.

“Cool Mum, don’t sweat it,” Heath called out the window as they zoomed off in his battered orange Datsun 120Y, ‘P’ plates slightly askew. Skyhooks lead singer Shirley Strachan belted out Horror Movie on the car cassette player.

“I just got the album,” Heath grinned from the driver seat “it’s

their latest one.”

It was a bit squashy in the back seat, but the girls were too excited to care. They were off on a beach adventure.

Leaving the farm the car bounced along dirt tracks.

They crossed the Pacific Highway north of Bulahdelah, and continued on unsealed backroads through lush green coastal forest. Presently in front of them, between the trees emerged an amazing vista of the whitest sand and most dazzling blue ocean the girls had ever seen. Heath pulled the car off to the side of the road and they tumbled out. Throwing off their outer clothes they raced to the water’s edge. The boys barrelled into the surf, the girls wading in more cautiously.

Rachael squinted into the cloudless blue sky. The water sparkled. Pale turquoise waves fringed by frothy white broderie anglaise lace washed gently over them. They swam and whirled, frolicking and floating, weightless in the swell. The boys swam off to body surf in the waves, and soon after Lucy headed off to find them.

Having lost track of time or how far out she had travelled from the beach, Rachael turned to orient herself. Jeepers creepers I’m a long way out. She had a moment of doubt but then was sure she would be okay.

Much later when she turned for the beach she saw that her cousins were back on land, tiny specks on the isolated shore.

She began to swim back. The current was strong and Rachael seemed to be making no headway.

What is happening? She swam on, certain that she was heading in the right direction,

unsure of the distance to the beach. Another wave washed over her head. She choked and decided to dog paddle, struggling now to stay afloat.

Seal Rocks, near the Myall Lakes was unpatrolled. No flags to indicate a safe section of the coast for swimming and no life-savers to intervene should holiday makers get into trouble.

It was a dangerous stretch of coastline and locals knew of the rips. It would later be dubbed Treachery Beach. For visitors, especially land-locked ones like Rachael and Lucy who possessed no surf skills, this was a particularly perilous place.

Rachael began to realise that she may be in trouble. The roar of the ocean drowned out all other sound. There was no one around to help, no strong arms reaching out to support or protect her. She had become caught in a powerful undertow, and was being dragged out to sea. She continued to swim, yet came no closer to shore. She swam and swam, breast stroke and dog paddle, in an attempt to keep her head above the swell.

She now found herself in the fight of her life. But Rachael was a fighter. She was not going to be taken out today by an arbitrary wave.

Mum had insisted that all the children learn to swim. She had made sure that they went to summer swimming classes at the local pool. Young for the class, even at the shallow end her feet failed to reach the pool floor.

Crowded classes meant that she couldn’t guarantee a place at the pool edge, where she could hold on safely. Desperately dog paddling to keep her head above water and feeling unsafe had been a frightening experience.

This was the catalyst for her disobedience. Normally a rule keeping child, she remembered vividly one morning wagging a swimming lesson. Too compliant to leave the pool precinct, she sat cowed in the deserted grandstand, wrapped in a beach towel, watching the other young kids being tortured by the swim teacher. Despite Rachael hating those lessons with a vengeance, she was forced to continue to attend.

Now, as she battled the current, she thanked God that she could swim.

The formidable undertow continued to pull her out. She was becoming extremely fatigued. All the while she swam.

Exhaustion encroached, but Rachael struggled on. Wrestling the pitiless waves was purgatory.

Her strokes slowed as exhaustion engulfed her. She slapped the surface but with less energy as her body protested. Her lungs heaved and every muscle burned.

Don’t quit, keep going, she coached herself, as fear chilled her veins. She was not a quitter, but this was the biggest adversary she had yet faced in her young life. This faceless monster, ruthlessly aggressive and uncompromising, would take no prisoners.

Finally totally spent, unable to go on, she stopped thrashing her arms. As her body betrayed her, Rachael’s feet sank downward.

Her hope for survival dwindled and dread squeezed her heart.

Her body weight dragged her down into the swirling brine.

“I’m going to die.” Only a child herself, she barely had a life history to flash before her eyes as she faced imminent drowning.

“What happens now?”

dropped incongruously into her mind; the detached observer.

Then Rachael felt her soles connect with something solid.

Astonishingly her head was still just above water. She was standing on the sea bed. Sand, cool and solid, squelched between her toes. Shocked and surprised, she almost laughed.

How long had she been swimming just above the ocean floor in shallow breakers? She would never know.

Immense relief coursed through her veins. Collapsing onto the sandbar she crawled the substantial distance to the water’s edge. Crumpling, shattered onto the beach, half in, half out of the water, her legs floated in the shallows. As she lay, smashed, face down in the shoals, she silently thanked God for saving her life.

Beginning to recover Rachael raised her head and gazed along the beach, the enormity of her close encounter sinking into her consciousness. Dazed, shaking and tearful she looked around to tell Lucy of her lucky escape.

Slowly, a new horror dawned.

Lucy was not on the beach.

“Where’s Lucy?” she called hoarsely to Heath.

“We thought she was with you…” Heath’s face revealed confusion and then alarm.

Rachael had a strong protective instinct toward Lucy whom, despite being an annoying little sister, she loved dearly. She must be still out there. Oh no, she could not lose Lucy. It was incomprehensible.

Panic enveloped her and rational thought took flight. Despite her desperation to take action, Rachael sat immobilised, her limbs shaking uncontrollably.

An eternity ticked past as they all

scanned the horizon.

After an interminable wait, dragged out of the surf flanked by two young guys was little Lucy.

Thank God… she’s alive.

Lucy bedraggled, frightened and exhausted, was conscious and breathing. Flooded with relief, for a second time that day, Rachael raced over and hugged her little sister.

In this idyllic setting both Rachael and Lucy had faced death. Their mother’s wisdom and determination had prepared them for the dangers that a capricious future could inflict, and had saved their lives.

Other unwary travellers spellbound by the beauty of Treachery Beach would not be so lucky.

Miranda Riwoe’s debut novel, Stone Sky Gold Mountain, is a lyrical historical novel set during Australia’s gold-rush which focusses on the experiences of the Chinese immigrants of the late nineteenth century. It is a compelling reimagining of life on the goldfields which explores what it means to survive in a land far from your home under a cloud of constant and cruel discrimination.

When Ying and Lai Yue’s younger siblings are sold into slavery to pay their father’s gambling debts, they flee their family home in China and travel to Australia’s goldfields to repair their family’s fortune. But life on the goldfields is tougher than they imagined and they soon head to the nearby town to earn a living. In order to protect his sister, Lai Yue finds Ying a safe job disguised as a young boy with a local Chinese storekeeper. Wracked with guilt and a sense of responsibility for the destruction of his family, Lai Yue takes the tougher job with an overland expedition and suffers the physical hardship of the journey and the emotional hardship of the constant racism of the rest of the team.

While Ying works hard in the store and is safe under the storeowners protection, she is lonely without Lai Yue, isolated by her lack of English and locked in her gender disguise. In time she befriends Meriem, a young woman working as a maid for a local sex-worker, also lonely and isolated by her outcast status. While Ying enjoys the new freedoms associated with being “male”, Lai Yue gradually deteriorates as he travels further and further from community and deeper into the violent and savage world of the colonial outback.

The novel demonstrates the importance of language in belonging and the dangers incurred by absence of knowledge of the language. As the only Asian member of the overland expedition, Lai Yue is socially isolated and increasingly desperate. His limited grasp of English means that he struggles to understand what is required of him and to defend himself against misunderstandings and verbal attack. Although Ying’s grasp of English is also limited, her employer and neighbours are Chinese so she is more supported and understood.

This is a well-researched and faithful historical novel which subverts the perspective of the traditional goldfields novel by focussing on characters outside the traditional white colonial narrative. The perspective of the novel shifts between that of the three major characters: Lae Yue, Ying and Meriem. The shift of focus from the traditional white colonial perspective to that of characters normally reserved for background stereotypes challenges the dominant historical perspective. It also elucidates the social parallels between the late nineteenth century and current twenty-first century Australia: the racism and violence towards migrant communities and First Nations people; and the concomitant issues of discrimination based on gender and socio-economic status.

It was a wild night in Belfast. I had the job of collecting my daughter at the airport, 20 kilometres from the city. I knew the route. Misty rain reduced visibility but I was sure I didn’t need my glasses. I could see well enough to notice that I had missed the major turn off the motorway!

I did a tight right-hander and headed over Black Mountain.

In my 22 years, I had never been over this 990 metre mountain. One lane only most of the route, what great relief when the airport sign appeared, not to mention my lovely daughter.

Swamji wandered the aisles of the new age festival. As the scent of sandalwood incense wafted past, his next step would change his fate. He had plunged head first into a vat of hot lavender oil. His yoga students, called for help, as he descended into an aromatherapy nightmare. While his lungs filled with oil, he remembered his guru’s teaching.

Stilling his mind, he focused his energy and visualised himself as a phoenix and he slowly began to rise up, soaring high above the awestruck crowd. It was much easier shopping for crystals and candles, with a bird’s eye view.

Moments of Joy She approached our group nervously, a newcomer.

Spotting her early, I moved towards her and smiled.

‘Are you looking for our walking group?’ Somewhat relieved, she answered, ‘Karen?’ Five minutes later she was absorbed in conversation with her new companions. By the end of the event, eyes shining, she volunteered how she loved the whole experience and would be back next time. Moments like these never fail to strike joy to my heart.

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting a young man who deeply desired to become a Dad, despite having no current partner. The surrogacy process involved was long and very difficult. I was moved by the details and felt privileged to hear of his unusual decision and journey. Seeing the delight in his eyes as he held his baby, became my joy as well.

Each one brought their natural elements to the table with their own stories of appreciation, of loss, and of hope restored. The depth and variety of their reflections amazed me! Here were honest stories, gently offered for us to hold with respect, some raised to God too.

These are just a few examples representing the joy found by people sharing life together. There is something unique about shared moments of joy that defies rational explanation. From my perspective, God inhabits these encounters, and they enliven my spirit.

These connections are sensed with the ‘heart’, and sometimes an exuberant light can be seen in their eyes. I believe we are designed to be in community –bringing joy to each other with our genuine sharing.

When God is felt to be present, it brings an even richer dimension.

Loneliness is the lack of such interactions, especially when their absence is felt. It’s always a challenge to enter a new group of people. Life contains many risks and we need to embrace them to enable positive changes in our lives. If you feel lonely, is there an activity you would enjoy doing with others? Or could you encourage someone to find new friends by accompanying them somewhere new? I am willing to help you connect with other people. Celebrating our seniors Last month was Seniors Month. A time to celebrate our elders with thanks and appreciation of their years in helping to grow the next generations with knowledge and experience.

ur first big event for over 12 months was a comedy festival at Hunters Hill Town Hall which we put on in partnership with Hunters Hill Council. I introduced the morning with the following words.

“This time last year we were all in lockdown and trying to work out how to cope with loneliness and isolation.

There wasn’t an awful lot of joy or things to laugh at.

At Sydney Community Services we had to find ways to still provide the essential supports but remain socially distanced and protect our staff and volunteers. In Hunters Hill and Lane Cove meals had to be delivered, beds were made, nurses did home visits, shopping needed to be ordered and our builders still needed to install ramps and modify bathrooms and kitchens so patients could leave hospital and go home.

But we did have to stop doing activities at our centres which were not considered essential, like group outings, organising Bridge and Scrabble games and having coffee and lunches together.

People got lonely, felt isolated, even imprisoned. Humans are social animals, we need the company of others. We need things that make us laugh – it has been scientifically proved that laughing lifts your mood and makes you happy.

So I think it is very fitting that one of the first big events we are doing with Hunters Hill Council this year is a comedy show. I hope you enjoy the show, feel happy and enjoy the Covid safe morning tea.”

The morning was a big hit with over 70 seniors enjoying stand up from four talented comedians followed by a beautiful boxed morning tea – Covid affects everything, even down to how you provide sandwiches and cake!

At The Meeting House we had two morning teas with entertainment from Mal Partridge (the bus driver) who is also a professional jazz musician.

On Friday 23rd April we had over 25 seniors attending an outdoor exercise event at Blackman Park using the permanent exercise equipment with audio equipment to

provide guidance and music.

Everything is slowly getting back to a “new normal” with Bridge, Scrabble, Mahjong, Table Tennis and Book Club coming back but still operating under the new restrictions of social distancing and sanitising everything.

If you don’t move you are at risk of being sprayed and wiped down at regular intervals.

We are not out of the woods yet but the beautiful autumn weather (my favourite season, all mists and mellow fruitfulness) means we can get out and about doing normal things, but in a new way, ever cautious that Covid lurks around every corner like a dark shadow.

So come on 2021, do your worst, we are ready for you and thanks to Astra Zenica we are prepared and looking forward to a better year than poor old 2020.

Enjoy the sunshine, get out and about and let’s get going again, but never again can we walk past hand sanitiser without having a reassuring squirt!

Having that level of interaction is important she notes as it gives SCS the chance to monitor how people are, and if they’re in need of any further assistance.

“Getting out into the community is a good reminder of how different people’s lives are and that some people are managing all sorts of difficulties – caring for a partner with health problems, getting grandchildren to and from school and struggling to hold their own and others’ lives together,” she says.

hen invited in 2010 to assist a friend Home Delivered Meals, Tor Caush didn’t know she’d still be volunteering for Sydney Community Services a decade later. “At first it was a great way to spend time with people while doing something positive,” she says.

Tor donates two mornings each week to assist with Home Delivered Meals, and even hits the road once a month to take out meals and call in on the clients herself.

“I enjoy seeing the regular faces,” Tor says. “Many of them will be waiting

Since her own kids became more independent (she has two girls who are studying at Uni now), Tor has been able to dedicate her time to other projects, not just SCS. Her recent venture is Box Divvy, a community fruit and veg co-op. Tor explains that every Friday morning a massive box of produce is dropped at her door from the markets, costing approximately 30 per cent less than the same items in the big supermarkets. From there, Tor divvies it up into boxes for local friends and neighbours who have got wind of the venture. She jokes that her entire garage turns into a fruit and veg shop

with more than 30 boxes flying out the doors.

As a self-confessed foodie, she loves that Box Divvy has brought like-minded people together who have since gone on to share ideas and recipes with each other.

When Tor’s away from food, you can find her bushwalking, or chatting with friends at a local book group.

Her dedication to SCS is unwavering.

“The team is incredible here and many of the things they do go unnoticed, such as the donations to Delvena Women’s Refuge”.

Congratulations to the Lane Cove 12Ft Sailing Skiff Club ($13,427), the Lane Cove Junior Rugby Union Club ($2,000), the Hunters Hill Sailing Club ($5,000), Hunters Hill Tennis Club ($5,000), Concord and Ryde Sailing Club ($2,000), and Chatswood Junior Rugby League Club ($17,200).

Planning made easy

As a Council, we are always looking at ways to enhance service delivery to our community so that when you come to do business with us, the experience is easy and efficient for you.

Over the past year, we have made some great strides forward in the area of development and planning, taking many of these services online so that our community can use ePlanning services to interact with us anytime, anywhere.

Online development application tracking is also assisting in this space.

Our quarterly reporting is already showing a reduction in development application processing times.

This month, we are also hosting a renovating and building planning information session.

If you are building or renovating, or work in an industry that deals in property or construction, you can find out how to make the planning process as simple and easy as possible.

As well as looking at online services, things such as what you need to know before you lodge a development application – and how we can help you with the process will be covered.

The session will also highlight Hunters Hill’s values and heritage requirements and how best to understand its unique character as a garden municipality and conservation area.

The session will be held on Thursday 6 May from 7pm at Hunters Hill Town Hall.

Get the Site Right

During May, our Council will join other local and state authorities to conduct a month-long Get the Site Right education and compliance campaign to advise builders and renovators on best practice erosion and sediment controls.

Builders and home renovators will be urged to stop run-off from their building sites polluting waterways and green spaces that Sydneysiders increasingly rely on for recreation and enjoyment.

A one-day inspection blitz of building sites across Sydney and the Hunter Coast will be held on Thursday 20 May. Members of the public are also encouraged to report pollution incidents, including poor sediment control, to Council or the Environment Protection Authority’s 24/7 Environment Line on 131 555.

Young people leading the way for our environment I am constantly inspired by the enthusiasm young residents have for protecting our environment: from addressing climate change to protecting our local bushland.

A new home-grown initiative which taps into this is being developed through our sporting clubs. The Sustainable Sports Program is the brainchild of a couple of local mums involved in football with the enthusiastic backing of their young players.

The program is designed to encourage sporting clubs to look at ways they can help reduce pollution, encourage recycling and other sustainable environmental practices. It started at the Northbridge Football Club in 2020 with the help of a federal grant I helped to secure. Last month the program was adopted by the Northern Suburbs Football Association and extended to 30 clubs and 17,000 players across our region. Ultimately the goal is to see it run statewide and to other codes.

The backbone of the program is the work of young sporting ambassadors who promote its sustainability goals among

their peers. They are a dedicated group ranging across primary and secondary school ages. They are acting locally and thinking globally and showing that we as individuals can all make a difference.

Supporting local cinemas Australia’s economic recovery from the pandemic is leading the world and occurring at a faster rate than most predicted.

Many sectors, however, are still struggling and the federal government is providing specific assistance to many that continue to suffer from the consequences of COVID-19 such as the tourism industry and the arts.

One of those areas most affected during 2020 were our independent cinemas. I know many local residents enjoy a movie at places like the historic Cremorne Orpheum so I was really pleased the federal government has recently announced funding to provide a cash boost to those independent cinemas which have been most affected.

Hopefully it will help secure many more hours of great movie viewing – particularly of some of the wonderful Australian films our local industry has been making!
