Welcome distractions

hello I write this as rain continues to lash at the windows and the news continues to show images of the devastating floods. It’s hard to keep spirits up at times like this, but the brave efforts of the Emergency Services and the SES are a comfort. Their toughness and resilience is something to behold, particularly for those like me who spend most of their time behind a keyboard.

Something else to behold is the work of Lane Cove’s most infamous and cherished artist, Guy Warren who this month turns 100. Our journalist Tracey Porter interviews him in these very pages, while you’ll also find a preview of his phenomenal upcoming Gallery Lane Cove exhibition.

Happy birthday Guy. This edition of TVO is dedicated to you.

By the time TVO hits the streets it will be Easter, so we send everyone good wishes for the long weekend and hope you are enjoying special times with friends and family. It is also, of course, Anzac Day this month and a time for us to reflect on those who have sacrificed for us. I won’t forget standing on our driveway at 6am during lockdown last year and hearing The Last Post sound out across our neighbourhood. Perhaps we might do that again?

Finally, April is Seniors Month and I know there are plans afoot across the whole of our community, for all generations. Look out for information about it both here in TVO, on social media and elsewhere.

news Lane Cove’s Ian Longbottom recognised with NSW Government Community Service Award

Former Mayor, Councillor and founder of The Village Observer, Ian Longbottom has been awarded the NSW Government Community Service Award 2020.

he presentation of this prestigious award followed a nomination in parliament

by Member for Lane Cove, Hon. Anthony Robert MP earlier last month.

Ian is a well-known face in our local community, having served on Council for 21 years, as Mayor for six years and for a staggering 30 years as a board member/President/Vice President of Lane Cove Community Aid, which is now known as Sydney Community Services. His impact on Lane Cove and surrounds has been, as Anthony Roberts MP says, “immeasurable”.

For us here at The Village Observer, his most vital work was to establish this publication in 1993 and work as its editor and publisher for 17 years. Quite simply, without Ian there would be no Village Observer.

Born in 1946, Ian gained accounting qualifications from Sydney Technical College at Ultimo.

He has held a diverse number of professional roles, which culminated in senior executive positions within the cosmetic industry and later 6 TVO

presented him with the opportunity to work in a variety of roles in Tokyo and California. However, in 1984, after 12 years of expatriate life, Ian returned to Sydney with his family and accepted the esteemed position of managing director at Hardy Brothers. Following that role, Ian became Group General Manager Marketing for Grace Bros, a NSW group of 46 department stores that were acquired by Coles/Myer, now Myer.

Since his return to Australia in 1984, Ian has advocated strongly for the development and growth of the community as a whole, especially the development of the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre, the Library/Market Square and retaining the land that is now called The Canopy. All of these projects were years in the making and helped along with Ian’s long-term perseverance!

He is a strong believer in modernisation and improvement and works to help foster a space where communities can see beyond the unknown and into the future.

He holds strong community values,

which are expressed through his involvement with institutions that make positive ethical impacts on our lives.

In June 2012 Ian was appointed chairman of the NSW Government Property Services Advisory Council, where his effective leadership and high regard in the community led to his reappointment annually until 2015. Ian’s dedication and value to the community has been emphasised through the volunteer roles he has undertaken, where his passion for improving the community is evident.

As a member of the Lane Cove Youth Centre board in the 1990s, Ian has shown his commitment to help provide much‑needed support for the community’s next generation. He is also a former President and director of the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, a club that is dedicated to integrity, philanthropy, and leadership within the community.

“On behalf of the residents of the electorate of Lane Cove, I thank Ian for his valued service in public life— long may it continue,” said Anthony Roberts MP.

Call out for knitting and crocheting charity project The Lane Cove-based Quarter Lane Crafters are calling all those who knit and/or crochet to help put together a collection of beanies and scarves for the Matthew Talbot Hostel and the Wayside Chapel.

The goal is to have a reasonable number of items ready to despatch by the end of May. All they ask is that colour of the yarn takes into account that the scarves and beanies will be distributed among gentlemen.

The Facebook page (same name as the group) gives more details, and a request to join will be approved for those helping out.

This small group came together quite unexpectedly in the middle of last year with the sole aim to use knitting and crochet skills to make items for the homeless and those disadvantaged across Sydney.

The Crafters are also planning to provide as many items as possible for the Dandelion organisation, which looks after mums and babies in less than desirable circumstances.

LIFE'S RICH PATTERN

A new reality

We recently trialled a virtual reality experience for residents at the aged care facility where I work. By strange happenstance it coincided with my family’s own VR event that week for my daughter’s eighteenth birthday. Our residents enjoyed a Night at the Opera by the Melba Opera Trust while we grappled with escaping from an Egyptian Tomb.

For the uninitiated, VR is a three-dimensional, computergenerated environment which you explore and interact with. You become part of the world – you basically turn into the avatar - and can manipulate objects or do other very cool stuff.

Have to say as a VR novice, it’s fabulous. It’s also weird, disorienting and a bit creepy.

Our seniors were amongst the first in Australia to trial the whole shebang as a remotely activated roll-out. In other words the headsets arrived in the mail for us to set up.

Individually. Alarm bells started pealing when the tech company called to check if ‘our IT department’ had any questions. (Our IT department consists of Jamie from the café and Steve the minibus driver.)

Undeterred, the team pressed on. Setting up twelve socially distanced residents, some with dementia, explaining to each one what they would see, was no easy task. But at last they were ready to go, space goggles wrapped round their heads like bug eyed Martians.

Over in Egypt, I became an Amazonian princess, warrior like, handsome and bedazzled from head to foot with coloured beads. It was unbelievably strange raising my hands to my face and seeing elegant brown multi-ringed fingers before my eyes.

‘Whose hands are they?’ bellowed one of our residents, during his own virtual opera.

‘THEY’RE YOUR HANDS LLOYD,’ Jamie shouted into his ear.

There was a lot of back and forth while straps were adjusted, and chairs repositioned. Individual microphones were a bridge too far, so the audio was played aloud, creating its own challenges for the hard of hearing. And we realised belatedly that spectacle wearers needed to keep them on, or everything would be (even more) blurry.

The aria performances started and before long there were tapping toes a plenty and clapping at the end of each set.

Twenty minutes was enough for some and Lloyd soon made a beeline for the exit.

‘Not for me love. Can’t stand opera.’

Fair enough.

The Egyptian headsets were fancier devices than the opera goggles, more like full helmets with built in mikes. The briefing session was, well, brief.

‘You can’t go wrong,’ said the twelve-year-old instructor.

‘Just move your hands and when they go blue you can pick something up. Off you go!’

With that detailed advice under our belts, we set off to find the treasure. I say set off, but what you do is throw your remote forwards so you’re ‘virtually’ advancing from room to room, not walking in real life. A techy problem with my headset meant it needed resetting, so I watched my family pursue their hysterical quest. My husband stood at an angle on one foot, jester-like, making wild air swipes towards the fire exit. As the shortest family member, Ruby’s avatar (a solid, fierce looking scar faced guy straight out of the Indiana Jones baddy playbook) had perpetually bent knees which made him/her walk like a gorilla.

By the end of the VR opera, the aged care residents were sweaty and exhausted. So were the staff. And so was I as I emerged from the tomb, treasure in hand, victorious thanks to some significant clues (aka pointed instructions) from my offspring.

I’m with you Lloyd. Operatic aria or tomb raider, it takes a bit of getting used to. Maybe next time we should swap.

interview: Scott Frank Bird Scott Frank Bird is the new Chairperson of the Diddy – officially known as the Longueville Sporting Club. A born and bred Lane Covian he chats here about his time growing up on The Riverview Estate, what the Diddy means to him and what a perfect day in Lane Cove and beyond looks like.

 Your parents built a house in Riverview and you attended Lane Cove Public School in the 70s. Give us a snapshot of your memory from back then…

Growing up in Lane Cove in the 70s, it seems like such a long time ago. The Riverview Estate I grew up on was a quiet place, and most houses had vacant blocks next to them. The kids all played in the streets on bikes, homemade billy carts, or maybe played ‘chase’ in the bush. We had the occasional rock fight, but we all played well together and went back home when the streetlights came on. There was no form of instant communication, so you would hear whistles from parents on their balconies, or they drove around the streets and parks hoping to find us. Dad would come home on a hot summer day and take us down to the rock pool in Tambourine Bay next to the Scout Hall. Most kids caught the bus to school from the age of five, and the older kids always had the back seat. For the Lane Cove Public and St Michaels students, it was a competition. The older boys would try and make us fight for entertainment.

Sometimes you’d go home with a black eye. I was lucky that I had three sisters and the older boys wanted to impress them. That meant I was protected.  You played sport with Lane Cove’s rugby union and soccer teams, and the Lane Cove Tigers. Is this where your commitment to clubs and their role in community started?

Everyone seemed to play a sport, with most starting at Lane Cove soccer on the weekend and then moving onto Lane Cove Rugby Union. We all had to participate in the swimming carnivals - if you couldn’t swim, they would teach you. It wasn’t about being the best. It was about being a part of a team, even though there was some stiff competition in the older groups. Not being the great footballer, I only played until I was 16. I always surfed though, even from an early age. My understanding of community didn’t just come from sport though - my Mum started an ice cream shop in

Lane Cove Plaza (Birdy’s). Someone needed to make ice cream, so I learnt the process and found a job. I moved out of home and was living on top of the shop in Lane Cove, so I was in the heart of all of it.  As a Carpenter/Builder by trade, what do you think of the developments that have sprung up around Lane Cove?

I worked on the tools for almost 20 years as a Carpenter, and then started my own business working on commercial projects as a subcontractor to large construction companies, now in a head contracting role with one of my sons at Refit Australia Pty Ltd. I see local development through the eyes of someone whose world is Lane Cove. We have no option but to allow growth, but we need to improve infrastructure.

Traffic management is a big issue, and it annoys me when I see the bus interchange has been built to service the Eastern trip to the city, when the West’s return has seemingly been forgotten. The new Canopy Project is an enormous success. I hope we stay away from the remaining residential properties as we don’t want to lose the village feel of Lane Cove and create a concrete jungle. I think we are reaching our peak, and it is time to renovate the old units, even if we increase their size. The great thing about Lane Cove Council is that it has always maintained our flora and fauna. There are concerns regarding our grasslands these are not just parks for the once or twice a week sport event and should never become plastic (synthetic).  Tell us how you got involved with the Diddy…

The Diddy’s a place for many locals or passers-by to drop-in and say hello, meet old friends, catch up with mates or have a meal with the kids and let them play. I was one of those people, before becoming a member 20 years ago.  And how did the opportunity come about to become Chairperson?

When the opportunity came up, I was offered a place on the board and I was more than happy to take up the offer. I’ve

been a Director on the board of the club for approximately four years. The board and management being proactive have allowed us to achieve wonderful changes in the club and it’s been great to have been part of that journey.  What do you intend to bring to the table?

About that Guy He is Australia’s oldest working and exhibiting artist but even at 99.9 years young Guy Warren is still proving a force to be reckoned with. Here he talks to Tracey Porter about a life in art.

pril 16th 2021 is shaping up as a big day in the Lower North Shore home of Guy Warren.

It will mark a century to the day since one of Australia’s most admired artists first arrived into the world. It will also herald the opening day of the National Art School’s new Drawing Gallery with an exhibition of drawings and works on paper by its most notable Alumni.

But perhaps more significantly April 16th will be the day the Order of Australia medal holder and the Archibald Prize winner finally cements his place as a true Lane Cove inhabitant.

uy Warren is an artist that needs no introduction.

A long-time resident of Greenwich, he is at once a local and national art treasure. He was also one of the early trustees of Centrehouse before the association’s incorporation, the very organisation that manages Gallery Lane Cove.

With a remarkable artistic career that spans some eight decades, he has garnered awards ranging from the AGNSW Trustees’ Watercolour Award (Wynne Prize Exhibition), the Archibald Prize and the 4th International Triennale of Drawing in Poland in 1988. In fact, his contribution to art was acknowledged by a Medal of the Order of Australia OAM (1999) and an Australia Medal AM (2013).

Having works held in public art collections across Australia is testament to his standing, not to mention international representation in prominent public and corporate collections. No less than six survey exhibitions of Guy’s works were previously presented in NSW and Queensland public institutions. This upcoming seventh is curated to celebrate his artistic excellence and dedication to art, which is amazing in and of itself, but more so considering the volume and quality of work he is still creating at almost 100 years of age. His energy and focus certainly eclipses some younger artists by miles, as with his appetite for experimentation.

Of Man and Nature: The Diverse Journey of Guy Warren is designed to mark his centenary turn in April and serves as an inspiration to all.

In terms of framework, the survey exhibition revisits his creative arc as a painter, from the early days in the 40s through to his hyper-productive period of 2020-early 2021. Thematically, it foregrounds his persistent pursuit of experimentation, evident from his expansive style, which sets him apart from his peers. Indeed, a spirit of adventure underscores his life and work, eschewing conformity and artworld trends.

The content and elements of his paintings are drawn from a vast repository of memories fuelled by his countless life adventures in Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia as well as other travels. Despite resistance to stylistic, process and image repetition, one subject remains an abiding concern throughout, that is, his fascination with the landscape and specifically, nature’s complexity and man’s synergistic relationship to it.

Gallery Lane Cove will host Of Man and Nature: The Diverse Journey of Guy Warren in May to celebrate the artist’s 100th birthday.

Here, Manager and Curator Rachael Kiang previews the upcoming, major survey of Guy’s work.

Whilst works reflective of the style of each decade will be on show, the interesting period is between 2020-2021, in his self-proclaimed time of great productivity. Owing in part to COVID restrictions, Guy produced an incredible amount of new work, some of which reflected current situations, such as a watercolour piece of socially-distanced exercising at a local park in the Lane Cove LGA, while others stem from recollections of his past experiences and travels.

One particular new series stands out – five different sized works on the landscape of the Bungle Bungles range in Western Australia, with one painting being quite a departure from his other works in terms of colour. Taken in its entirety, the survey show is an open invitation to be curious – it encourages the viewer to approach his works with a keen observing eye and an open mind.

Of Man and Nature: The Diverse Journey of Guy Warren is one of three exhibitions on view in New South Wales in the same period, each focusing on different aspects of his art. National Art School will launch a drawing exhibition From the Mountain to the Sky: Guy Warren Drawings opening to the public on 17 April. This will be followed by the major survey of Guy’s work at Gallery Lane Cove. Thereafter, yet another exhibition at University of Wollongong opening in the same week will present his works in relation to the Illawara region and the university alongside art he acquired when he was Director of the university’s art collection. In addition, Guy has a current solo show at his representing commercial gallery, King Street Gallery on William, on till 10th April. It is highly recommended to view all exhibitions to gain a deeper understanding of Guy Warren’s artistic practice for what an unusual, marvellous opportunity it is to be able to construct a complete picture of an art legend that Lane Cove can call our own.

Cooking is great for so many reasons, whether it be therapy; to crack open that great red wine; or to grab a bunch of friends on a weekend afternoon for nourishment, a laugh and a bowl of comfort.

Walking past the butcher’s daily offerings, are there meat cuts you wish you knew how to use?

Mapping Your Lane Cove What is it that makes your Lane Cove? What do you love about your neighbourhood? Are there highlights, memories or milestones you attach to our area or your own piece of Lane Cove?

his month you’re invited to participate in a special subjective mapping project that aims to celebrate our community and its unique stories as part of Council’s Neighbour Day activities.

Subjective mapping bridges the gap between cartography and storytelling. Sydney artist Peita Blythe explains “these types of maps allow us to create a more personalised cartography that is layered with intimate narratives and emotional connections”.

Council has commissioned Peita to create a blank map ready for locals to complete by exploring and visualising memories, relationships, observations, experiences, perceptions, emotions, ideas and connections. Peita says this process “encourages us to examine our relationship with a place and help us understand the world”.

To be part of this exciting local project you can simply download the blank map of Lane Cove from Council’s website or collect a copy from around the village. This special blank map has been created by Peita Blythe who has also recently hosted online workshops to help locals understand the history of cartography, looking at other examples of subjective mapping projects and artistic reflection to help inspire locals to bring their map to life.

You don’t need to have been to a workshop to be inspired - you can illustrate, write, paint or collage the map to tell your story – perhaps a map of your favourite places in Lane Cove, your daily commute, memorable moments, the best walks, historical facts, or perhaps a foodie’s guide to the area.

Maps are to be submitted to Council by the end of April with selected maps potentially featuring in a curated

exhibition that is shared with the wider community.

Impact on users

With the iPhone 12 — the latest iPhone offering — Apple has made it even harder for third-party repairers to fix the device, thereby increasing users’ reliance on its own services.

Apple has hiked its repair charges for iPhone 12 by more than 40%, compared with the iPhone 11. It is charging more than AU$359 to fix an iPhone 12 screen outside of warranty and AU$109 to replace the battery.

Historically, third-party repairers have been a cheaper option. But using a third-party repairer for an iPhone 12 could render some phone features, such as the camera, almost inoperable.

According to reports, fixing the iPhone 12’s camera requires Apple’s proprietary system configuration app, available only to the company’s own authorised technicians.

It’s not just Apple, either. Samsung’s flagship phones are also quite tricky for third-party repairers to fix.

Meanwhile, consumers are left with broken phones and huge repair bills — and repairers are left with less business.

The fight to remove barriers to repair is gaining momentum outside Australia, too, in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Legislative reforms have been introduced in the European Union and Massachusetts.

France has introduced a Repairability Index requiring electrical and electronic equipment companies to inform consumers about their products’ repairability on a scale of one to ten.

This takes into account the ease of repairability, availability and price of spare parts and availability of technical repair documents.

What is being done?

Suicide and suicide prevention

A good friend of mine took her own life recently. She left behind a grieving husband and two young children who now won’t grow up with their mother. Many of her friends, including myself, have been struggling with our own emotions, trying to process how something like this could have happened.

Some sobering facts: Current data shows that more than 3000 Australians die from suicide each year – an average of about 8 people each day. There are more people lost to suicide than from road accidents each year. Suicide is the leading cause of death among our young population.

Studies show that in the age group 15-24 years of age, suicide accounted for more than one third of deaths (36%).

Australian suicide rates are higher in rural and remote areas compared with urban areas. When someone dies from suicide, the tragic ripple effect reverberates through their family, friends, and also the wider community.

Sadly there are no simple and easy answers to the question of preventing suicide. Many suicides cannot be predicted or prevented, despite everyone’s best efforts. Often there are complex issues that precede the death and therefore solutions need to be tailored at multiple levels for all of us to play our part in reducing these disturbing suicide rates.

Keeping people safe requires a team approach involving GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, community mental health services, the person themselves, and their support carers/network.

When someone close to us dies from suicide, understandably it may lead to many emotional questions: Why did they do this? Could I have done something more to prevent this? What signs did I miss?

There are many known risk factors to suicide. These include: being male (three times more likely than females), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, LGBTIQA+ people particularly transgender and bisexual people, past suicide attempt, past history of abuse/sexual assault, family

Scans for your pain Scans are frequently used in the medical fields to try and assist our understanding of what is happening below the skin. For musculoskeletal conditions such as backs, knees and shoulders it can seem like a great idea to perform a scan to assist with finding the source of pain.

Unfortunately scans only tell us about the current state of the underlying structure. They tell us nothing about the source of pain. It is very easy to make an assumption that these changes must be the reason someone is experiencing pain. Most changes we see are the result of the normal aging process. Just as on the surface we see wrinkles and grey hair over time, we see changes on the inside to the bones, discs and tendons. Historically these changes were thought to be the reason for pain. We now know better.

For most people they do not need scans if they are experiencing either acute or chronic musculoskeletal pains. In fact, having scans can be counterproductive because once a change is seen on a scan, it can negatively influence the thinking of the person who has the scan.

If you have had scans, we will look at them, explain them to you as well as performing our detailed musculoskeletal examination to help you on your road to recovery.

Managing your mental health is an essential part of suicide prevention.

There are many known warning signs as well: suicidal thoughts or plans, talking about death and suicide, increased anxiety, agitation, alcohol or drug use, withdrawing from others, feeling like they are a burden, feelings of hopelessness or of having no purpose or reason to live, a past or current psychiatric illness especially depression (major risk factor) and current stressors – legal, financial or work-related problems, relationship breakdowns, homelessness or physical health issues.

If you are concerned about someone who you are feel may be at risk of suicide, there are some things you can do:

A counterintuitive warning sign too can happen. It occurs when the at-risk person appears to have made a ‘total 100% turnaround’ and seems to be suddenly much better. The reason for the sudden (false) positive change is that the person has finally come to a definite decision and plan to commit suicide, thereby giving themselves a huge feeling of relief. The settling of any outstanding issues such as their Last Will & Testament and formalising future responsibilities and care for any of their surviving dependents, will often also give them a sense of peace and resolution.

Secondly, keep in contact and check in on them regularly.

Spend time with them; the social contact can provide a welcome distraction.

If you are reading this now and you feel that you identify with many of these warning signs – please seek professional help. You are not alone and there are always ways that can help you get through this dark period in your life. If available, I would strongly encourage you to confide in someone who you trust and are close to you. Also please seek out the help from your local GP who is experienced in dealing with mental health issues. Your GP can listen and support you, prescribe medications if needed, and refer you to psychologists and psychiatrists to get the care you need.

Firstly do not be afraid to ask: How are you feeling? Are you okay? Have you been having thoughts about ending your life? This last question is important to ask – there is no evidence that asking someone if they are having suicidal thoughts, will put the idea in their head and lead to suicidal thinking. In fact, it has been actually shown to improve survival outcomes.

Thirdly, try and foster hope, purpose and meaning to their lives – emphasise friendships, relationships, their pets.

Writings, photo and video reminders of positive and happy moments in their lives can make a difference as well.

We all can have a part to play to make a difference in preventing and reducing suicide rates in Australia.

Estimate how much mixture you need, according to the size of your mould, it’s best to make more than you think you will need. Have on standby an additional smaller mould, so you can use any leftover mixture on instead of it going to waste.

Decide what side of the mould you are going to use (the inside or outside).Spray area with cooking oil or cover with wrap (to assist removal of pot from mould) Add the three dry ingredients first and mix well. Add bonding adhesive (about 3/4 cup diluted with a couple of cups of water). Vermiculite holds water within its air pockets and also lets the pot ‘breathe’ so is a good option for making a ‘moss pot’. However, if you want to make a vessel for plants that like a dryer environment (such as succulents) a better option would be perlite which will make the pot drain more quickly.

Start with the base & add a layer 3-4cm in thickness.

Tamper down firmly with your thumb to remove air pockets.

Work your way around the side walls (2-3cm thick). Use your finger to make a drainage hole in the base. Smooth off all edges. Once finished, cover your creation with plastic and place in a shady location for a couple of days.

Two days later: Carefully remove the pot from mould (your pot has not yet cured and is fragile). Use sandpaper or a metal brush to smooth or rough up the texture of your pot according to what type of look you are after.

Recover the pot with plastic and place back in a shady area for at least three weeks.

Three weeks later: Remove plastic and immerse your hypertufa pot in a mix of 90% water and 10% vinegar for 10 minutes (this will remove the excess lime from the pot and make it more plant friendly). It is now finished! Initially your pot will look rather ‘new’ however once planted out and regularly watered your pot will take on an aged natural ‘mossy’ patina.

Peat moss is organic, very light and has incredible water holding capacity. The combination of these three ingredients’ result in a very natural looking strong, lightweight vessel, which ages beautifully.

WHAT YOU NEED: Ingredients • 1 part cement (sifted to remove any lumps) • 1 1/2 parts vermiculite OR perlite • 1 1/2 parts peat moss (sifted) • bonding adhesive (hardware store) • water

Local artists on display at ArtXtra!

Lane Cove Art Society members will be showcasing the best of local art this month with its ArtXtra! exhibition.

T

here was no show in 2020, but artists were working away in their studios and homes, and now have a wealth of art to choose from, in a variety of styles from traditional to contemporary and in all mediums.

ArtXtra! will be held at the spacious Gallery Lane Cove, 164 Longueville Rd, with the opening night on Friday April 9 at 6pm. Ian Longbottom, Patron of the Art Society, will officially open the exhibition and the evening is a great opportunity to meet and talk to the artists. Admission by gold coin.

The exhibition is then open free from Saturday April 10 to Saturday April 24.

The winners of the best works will be announced on the opening night. The main prizes will be awarded to the two most outstanding works in the exhibition – these are the Lloyd Rees Prize ($1,500) and the Guy Warren Prize ($1,200). In addition there will be the Joyce Mills Bequest prize for oils or acrylics and prizes for watercolours, mixed media, pastels & drawings & prints, and the Art Scene prize for small works, sponsored by The Art Scene, Ryde.

Can you describe to us the type of artist you are, and the medium you work in?

I am a photographic artist. The word ‘photograph’ means ‘draw with light’ in Ancient Greek. This is how I see my work – to be able to capture light and reproduce it as an image. Recently I have been experimenting with slow exposures – the effect is somewhere between a photograph and a painting.

What motivates you to ‘create’?

I am always trying to capture the light, the moment, or a unique perspective that may inspire others to treasure and appreciate what surrounds us. My creative process invites me into nature, where I can lose my sense of self. It is a meditative experience.

Where did you learn your craft, or is it something you were blessed with?

My dad loved photography and I first caught the bug from him when I was six years old. As a girl, I loved photographing the wild places on the Victorian coast. I studied a Bachelor of Arts in photography at RMIT, and in my final year I received a scholarship to study at Brooks Institute in California.

Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators?

The new Lane Cove Artist’s Collective, started by local curators Ann Proudfoot and Sky Hugman, has been an immense support to me personally. The beautiful natural environment of the Lower North Shore is a constant inspiration to create work.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts, and if so, how would that manifest?

I think more opportunities for exhibitions would be great, whether in galleries, empty shopfronts or public spaces. Lane Cove could even host our own ‘Sculpture in the Trees’ exhibition! There is so much talent in the area, it would be wonderful to showcase it.

How would we go about seeing your works?

My work was recently on display in the first Artist Collective exhibition, Rewilding at Gallery Lane Cove, but people can also find me on my website www.katseward.com.au Which artists/creators inspire you?

My brother Andrew Seward, is a Melbourne based artist, and he is a big inspiration to me. Visiting him is a joy - his home studio is filled with art and it bursts with creativity. And I also adore the work of Sydney photographer Tamara Dean.

Over many years Hunters Hill Council and Hunters Hill Historical Society have acquired a fine art collection.

Paintings have been donated, purchased by Council or have been obtained at the annual Hunters Hill Art Show.

To give the public access to the wonderful collection, the museum has been refitted to include a gallery wall, complete with lighting, and enough space for more than 30 paintings. The collection is at least double that and the works will be rotated.

Among the collection, which contains many depictions of Hunters Hill and the surrounds, are four special pieces – located on the current wall under numbers 11 to 14.

THEY INCLUDE: • ‘Fig Tree House’ by George Collingridge (the man who wrote the historical text ‘The Discovery of Australia’ and founded the Royal Art Society of NSW); • ‘Fig Tree Church’ by Nora Heysen, who was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize; • ‘Fishing on the River’ by Charles Piguenit (one of Australia’s most wellknown artists) and • ‘Pleasure Grounds’ which is by an unknown artist, but depicts a time when the grounds of Hunters Hill High School were used for weekend fun for city dwellers.

In 1981, Agnes Bain is an ageing beauty, living with her philandering, abusive husband and her three children in her parents’ council flat.

Dissatisfied with the boredom and misery of her life, she escapes by drinking to excess. When her husband, “Big Shug Bain” moves the family to a destitute mining village outside Glasgow and then abandons them, she descends ever further into alcoholism. It is her children that suffer the most, constantly neglected, abused and left hungry. They fend for themselves and each other and are forced to witness her progressive deterioration into alcoholism and her increasing vulnerability to abusive men. The older two children, Catherine and Leek, escape as soon as possible. But Shuggie, much younger than the other two, is forced to stay and care for his mother alone: cashing the pension and trying to save some of the money for food from her voracious thirst for alcohol.

Shuggie doesn’t belong in this rough world of working-class Glasgow with its dying shipyards and mining industries. Bullied mercilessly for his correct speech and “prissy” manner, threatened and abused by adults and children alike, he is lonely and isolated. It is clear to him and to others that he is “no’ right” or “normal” and he tries to mask his effeminacy by changing his walk and his clothes. In his isolation, he stays close to his mother, caring for her and always hoping that she will get “better”. He cleans up her vomit, changes her clothes and tries to distract her from constantly dressing up to go out drinking. His constant love and care for her is a heartrending portrait of the relationship between a child and a parent lost to addiction.

This is a bleak but touching novel. Despite the grim circumstances in which the siblings are raised, there is love and connection between them. Agnes’ charm and charisma is still evident even as she spirals ever downward. Her pride in her appearance and in keeping her home in order is sad and sympathetic. Shuggie’s dogged perseverance in caring for his mother is heroic in the face of the daily threats he faces as a young, lonely boy alone in a hostile, violent world.

Douglas Stuart is clear that the novel is a work of fiction which draws on his own experiences. He grew up in Glasgow’s public housing with an alcoholic mother and was orphaned at 16 years old. Now a successful fashion designer, Stuart wrote the novel over a period of ten years and submitted it to 32 publishers before it was accepted. This debut novel is the Winner of the 2020 Booker Prize for Fiction.

This is a bleak but touching novel.

T

hat’s the third time you’ve been out today and haven’t bothered to ask if I’d like to come along.

Twice you brought back coffee and plastic bags, but trust me, you don’t need any more coffee. You’re agitated enough; yelling at me when I greet you at the door, waving your arms, wearing your snarly face, just because I separated the recycling from the food waste onto the floor. You say, you’re environmentally aware so, how can you object to my planet saving efforts?

And come on, man, locking me inside all day without a toilet break is not cool, so don’t blame me if my bladder can’t hold all day. You needed a new bedspread anyway. A Ferrari doona cover, seriously? No wonder you’re single.

A quick bolt down the hallway, three or four couch naps, a gnaw on the grotty rubber chicken, and some hardcore harassment of anyone walking past the window. That’s my day so far. I’m itching for the doorbell to ring, so I can make some real noise. Sometimes it’s the highlight of my day. Oh, go ahead and mock me. But be sure to tell me what floats your boat when some giant incomprehensible creature, feeds you pellets of ground up gunk, dictates your activity schedule and keeps you imprisoned most of the day. Doorbells will sound like the heavens calling, my friend. Alleluia, someone’s here!

So, I see you’ve brought home bread and fruit. The fruit you can keep, but the bread we will share. Look at this face. I’ve been practicing begging face since I was weeks old. You’d have to be made of stone to resist. It is amusing though; the way you think you can hold out. Do we have to go through this every time you make a sandwich? Ok, but I’m starting at phase one: staring at you mournfully.

Admittedly, phase one hardly works, unless there happens to be a visiting female, but visiting females are rare.

Time for phase two: gently pawing your leg while holding eye contact.

Seriously, you are going to make me go through each step? Why didn’t that sweet old lady at the shelter adopt

me instead? She seemed keen until I accidentally pushed her over. Geez, I licked her face to say sorry and everything. Ok, phase three: not so gently pawing your leg while holding eye contact. That sandwich looks good. Is that ham? That’s it, man, I’m playing hardball. I launch phase four: drooling over the most expensive surface I can find while maintaining eye contact. Half a ham sandwich and it was all totally worth it. Have fun disinfecting your keyboard. I might even give you a soft burp of gratitude.

In the initial weeks of our relationship, I thought I was onto a good thing; warm bed, good food, daily walks, and actual interaction with the world. But you seem to give that computer thing more attention than me these days. I haven’t even had my walk today. Whining is for emergencies, so today I’ll try passive guilt. Takes a little longer but results are almost guaranteed.

You’re at the computer again. I make sure I’m in direct line of sight, pacing out a sixty-degree angle from your screen. Then I nose push my mat over to the exact spot I’ve marked out. Position myself on my mat, head in paws, eyes up. Furrow the brow a little more. Tail ready to wag if I get a glance. I’m all set.

This is taking forever, and I haven’t even got a first glance. Wait. He’s turned. Steady. Hold the position.

Good. First glance. It wasn’t a long look, but at least it’s registered in his brain, I am a bad pet owner. I am a bad pet owner. That’s right. Keep

saying it to yourself, man. I wonder if a tiny whimper is needed. Like I said, I don’t like to use up the whimpers too early. Second glance! The whimper may not be needed after all. I furrow those brows as high as they can go.

Keep eye contact. Hold it. Hold it. Yes, that’s it. He’s stopped typing. Here comes the sigh, the shoulder roll. And touchdown! He’s up. Then he’s walking over to the lead. I try to stay contained; I really do but I can never manage it.

I’m bounding about like a psychotic yoyo and I don’t care. All dignity gone.

What are the SCS CALD groups, and how can I join?

Members of our local community who have a Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Iranian and Afghan background can join our community connection groups.

Sydney Community Services provides social and support groups for people of all cultural backgrounds, operating out of our Hunters Hill Hub. This service provides social inclusion and community connection-based supports for seniors from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. SCS has Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Iranian and Afghan groups and liaises with other CALD community providers such as the Iranian Community Organisation and CO.AS.IT to provide culturally sensitive services.

Each group has a calendar of activities that is published in a bi-monthly newsletter, written in the language of that group: Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, and Persian. Activity Calendars are mailed or emailed to clients according to their preference.

Our experienced staff prepare a variety of activities including day trips, cultural celebrations, luncheons,

Day trip transport is provided by Sydney Community Services, while some meals are provided. Day trips cost between $15-$20 for transport and $8-$25 for lunch.

TRIBUTE TO LONG-TIME VOLUNTEER

Betty Rose Benjamin A dedicated and well-known volunteer with Sydney Community Services (formerly Gladesville Community Aid and then subsequently Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services) 93-year-old Betty Rose Benjamin passed away quietly in April 2020. Here we pay tribute to her life.

B

etty Benjamin made an enormous impact on Sydney Community Services, especially through her work at the Hunters Hill Hub. During her 25 years of service, Betty was generous enough to share her incredible organisational skills, impeccable attention to detail and exemplary editorial skills with our organisation.

Betty started as an administrative volunteer with Gladesville Community Aid. The Home and Community Care Program was in full swing in the late 1980s, and Betty worked tirelessly typing submissions for funding and generally supporting staff and volunteers with her expertise, conscientiousness, extraordinary accuracy and generosity of spirit.

Although Betty professed to prefer typing on a typewriter to staring at a computer screen she was instrumental in the planning and establishing the Moocooboola Computer Club for Seniors. That was her nature! She was adaptable and interested in the both supporting the present and securing the future.

During her time with the Moocooboola Computer Club for Seniors Betty became the Club’s Public Officer. She also served as the Public Officer of the Australian Seniors Computer Club Association.

Not one to rest for long, Betty also assisted the Hunters Hill Seniors Advisory Group and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. For many years Betty was the Chair of the Hunters Hill Seniors Advisory Group later more

affectionately known as “SAG”. All who worked with her on this Committee were enthused by her dedication and commitment to the senior residents of our community.

Born in 1927 to Ernest and Dora Benjamin, Betty was a trailblazer having built a successful career and passion for travel in a time when women were rarely afforded such opportunities.

She spent 10 years with the F. L. Wilson & Company and almost 40 years with the Horwitz Group who were perhaps best known as the publisher of MAD magazine. Betty handled the royalties paid to authors and writers and was also on the board that oversaw the publication of the Horwitz encyclopaedias.

Her loyalty and contribution to the firm’s progress was always appreciated and recognised by the Horwitzs, who regarded her as part of their large family.

Never married, Betty was surrounded by a large circle of family and friends. She enjoyed a close relationship with her sister Estelle, brother-in-law Norman and nephews Robert and Phillip.

Betty lived with her parents at Campbell Street, Bexley until she moved to the Sir Moses Montefiore Home in Hunters Hill in 1980 with her mother. Upon their arrival, they became Blue and White volunteers at the Home, with Betty eventually becoming its Life Governor. Betty made sure she took an active part in her new community. She never missed Boronia Park Uniting’s Church Learning for Leisure events such as Fashion Parade and End of the Year Morning Tea. She was later named Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year.

Betty was a very precious colleague and friend to many Sydney Community Services staff members who fondly remember her as a person who spoiled them on Mother’s Day, Easter and Christmas with gifts of chocolates and cards.

Over the years, Betty relentlessly threw herself into projects with gusto and commitment. She will be remembered for her generous donations of time and funding. She strongly believed in doing her best and leading a life to help others.

She will be missed. Vale Betty.

Rosilyn Baxter OAM 1926 - 2021 When Rosilyn (Ros) Baxter OAM died on February 23rd at the age of 95, Lane Cove lost another of its great citizens.

R

os was a pioneer; one of our early women councillors, a proponent of Council-provided community facilities, such as Possums Corner, the Phoenix St childcare centre and the Meeting House.

She was instrumental in building the Plaza and Blackman Park.

Ros Baxter was a strong, no-nonsense woman with great compassion, especially for migrant communities.

She approached her responsibilities with enormous energy and a practical intelligence, always willing to tackle a problem and find a solution to benefit the community.

Perhaps her toughness and resilience came from her upbringing on a sheep station in outback QLD, where she was exposed to a variety of passers-by including Afghan camel drivers, illiterate bushmen, and even the visiting Archbishop.

Ros was not exactly typical of her generation. In her early 20s she was captivated by a young man in a naval uniform – her husband Philip Baxter. She and Philip were married in London in 1950 and their marriage lasted 70 years until his death last September.

The Baxters were a true partnership. Around 1962, after moving back to Australia and opening a photo studio, Ros and Philip bought their home in Longueville, backing on to what is now bushland reserve. In 1971 the Lane Cove Country Club announced plans to expand the golf course. The adjoining valley was to be filled with demolition materials to form the base for an extended green. Ros joined a group of locals who organised protests and lobbied councillors. The result is Lane Cove Bushland Park.

Two threads ran through Councillor Baxter’s life - a desire to improve the lot of women and a mission to conserve and regenerate local bushland, while greening the whole of Lane Cove through street trees, playing fields and parks. In 21 years on Council, including one as Mayor, Ros worked tirelessly to green the local environment.

Her contribution to the environment and her community was recognised in 1994 when she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Lane Cove owes a great deal to Ros. Her legacy is all around us in the Plaza, many of our parks and bushland and some of our best community facilities.

Inspiration Veena Sahajwalla is a woman quietly making a big difference in our world. Raised in Mumbai, Veena was fascinated from a young age how almost everything was ingeniously recycled. When she moved to Australia, she found a very different story and dedicated herself to fixing it. Now an engineer, Veena inspires teams of people with her unflinching and creative determination to find solutions for hard to use waste products. Veena was recently featured on ABC Australian Story: The Tipping Point. As I admire new, creative solutions that produce a positive outcome, Veena inspires me. I also love her modus operandi: a quiet, unselfish determination to do some lasting good for all. Veena dedicates her life to this passion. She doesn’t complain, but there is an underlying sacrifice required for the intensity of her mission.

Who or what inspires you? Answering this question helps to counter the bombardment of so much dark news. Is it a sports person, an actor, an activist, natural beauty or your Dad? What is it about them that inspires you to be a better person? You could reward them by telling them what they mean to you.

For many people throughout the centuries, inspiration has come from God, augmented by the associated writings which help them understand a little more about that often -mysterious Source. Like all inspiration, belief in a higher power beyond ourselves, gives us hope. The Easter story is one of sacrificial love of God for all people.

I hope everyone is having/has had a wonderful Easter break and was able to use the time off to celebrate with your friends and family. I’m sure a lot of you, including myself, are still dealing with the aftermath of our kids making the most of an abundance of chocolate!!

Firstly, I am pleased to announce that the number of people sleeping on the street across the state has reduced by 14% in the last year, This result is a consequence of the NSW Government’s strong focus on aiming to break the cycle of homelessness.

As a government we have done a tremendous job in working to help hundreds of rough sleepers seek housing as well as prevent thousands of people from becoming homeless by helping them maintain tenancies in the private retail market.

Further, I am delighted that the NSW government has expanded assertive outreach to almost 60 locations and has invested $65 million in the new Together Home initiative which offers secure housing and support for people who were sleeping rough.

I look forward to viewing the results in the next annual street count and I am hoping that the government can be able to reduce the amount of people living on the street even further as well as providing even more support for the homeless.

ANZAC Day ANZAC day is also approaching us, as a community and as a nation it is one of the most important days of the year. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifice that so many of our brave soldiers have made in order to protect the ideals and values which we hold so close to our hearts. I strongly encourage each and ever one of you to attend a service on the day and then later on indulge in a couple of games of 2-UP!!

Anzac Day: Veterans reflect

The Anzac story is well known to Australians. It’s something we reflect on often as a nation, and in a formal sense each 25 April.

We know that many of the stories of war are those of great tragedy and suffering, but there are also accounts of great heroism and inspiration.

As we approach this Anzac Day and prepare to remember and reflect on the dedication and sacrifice of service men and women, past and present, we are inviting our community to come together and hear from local Hunters Hill veterans.

Our Council has partnered with the Hunters Hill RSL SubBranch to bring an Anzac-themed Village Talk on 15 April to The YARN community and library space.

We are honoured to have three veterans – Rod Stewart, Jim Board and Ian Hansen – who will share their wartime stories in honour of Anzac Day. We will also be commemorating Anzac Day around Town Hall, in line with public health guidelines.

Lest We Forget Last year’s Anzac Day was unlike any other as it was one of the events affected in the early stages of the pandemic.

I remember standing out the front of my house holding a candle along with my neighbours in a solemn minute of silence at dawn. It was a moving alternative but not quite the same as being with our veterans at the usual ceremonies.

This year traditional Anzac Day ceremonies will be back but in a COVID safe way.

It was during the eight months of the Gallipoli campaign that the word Anzac came to symbolise courage, endurance, mateship and resilience in the face of adversity.

Over one hundred years on there are no Anzac veterans left among us but we able to consider their service and sacrifice through the stories they themselves told and which are now an enduring part of our history. We are not able to ask them questions about what they saw, or what they did. Similarly, we cannot ask them why, nor can we say thank you.

Instead their legacy has been kept alive by new generations of service men and women who have displayed similar qualities in war, conflict and peacekeeping operations since World War I. The Anzac legend continues to shape our national identity.

We cherish their sacrifices, their bravery and service to our nation.

Last year I had the privilege of meeting some of our locally surviving World War II veterans in their homes in the lead up to Remembrance Day. One was 100, the others in their late 90s. Spending some time with them will be something I will always cherish.

Anzac Day is our chance to let our service men and women – past and present – know that their service and sacrifice is remembered, appreciated and honoured. It is a time to acknowledge and commemorate their service to Australia and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

This year local services will again be held including the dawn service in the Lane Cove Canopy. More details will be available I am sure on the Lane Cove Council website including any COVID restrictions.
