greetings Welcome to 2021. There’s a dash of hope in the air – Mr Biden and Ms Harris have replaced he of two impeachments, Ms Berejiklian says some more NSW restrictions will be lifted, and Mr Holmes (principal at my sons’ school) has sent out a term one welcome letter to all relieved parents who are mere husks of who they were before the holidays.

This issue is all about getting outdoors, music, singing, cooking and gardening - simple pleasures that are perhaps more enjoyable when there is a dash of hope in the air - and we have kept it as hyper-local as possible.

Our main feature celebrates Kelly’s Bush on the Hunters Hill Peninsula – this year enjoying 50 years since being saved from development. Elsewhere we interviewed esteemed, local microbiologist Adrian Lee, who is also president of LaVoce – the community choir. His is a fascinating story. There is also some information about the Lane Cove Band, and new cooking and gardening columns.

It’s Valentine’s Day this month too. We could have included something about romance, but it failed to cross our minds. Last year I was sat on the sofa at 9:30pm before it even dawned on me that it was February 14th.

Here’s hoping you are showered in flowers and chocolate.

news Seniors to be rewarded with gift packs for taking part in NSW governmentbacked dementia health initiative Lane Cove Ferry saved

Adults over 65 are being encouraged to participate in a Macquarie University “Brain Bootcamp” initiative to determine their dementia literacy, with the first 1000 people receiving a free Bootcamp gift box.

Dr Joyce Siette has been funded by the NSW Government to create the Brain Bootcamp public health initiative.

Supported by the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University, the aim is to increase seniors’ awareness of dementia risk factors and initiate lifestyle changes to maximise brain health for free.

Research on the prevention of dementia has identified risk factors “that we have the power to change” says Dr Siette.

These are known as modifiable risk factors and together make up 40% of dementia cases.

Dr Siette gathered a team of experts from around the world to create Brain Bootcamp – a vision that shows when seniors make small lifestyle changes they can instigate better brain health.

Seniors are asked to log onto www.brainbootcamp. com.au to fill out some surveys that will create their own personalised brain health profiles. The profile will be included in a free Bootcamp package that will include strategies and complementary items to kickstart better brain health. There are 1000 gift boxes available. The initiative started on January 11th 2021, so best to get in quick.

Just before Christmas, it was revealed that the Captain Cook-operated Lane Cove Ferry Service would be discontinued, however, thanks to community pressure and discussions between local MP Hon. Anthony Roberts and the Minister for Transport, the ferry has been saved.

“Transport for NSW has reviewed community and stakeholder feedback and can confirm the Captain Cook Lane Cove Ferry Service will continue in 2021.

The proposed alternative school bus services due to commence from term 1 2021 will not be introduced in 2021, and the ferry service will continue.”

The ferry runs from Lane Cove into the city on weekday mornings and makes the return journey to Lane Cove in the afternoons. The ferry stops at Longueville Wharf; Northwood Wharf; Greenwich – Bay Street Wharf and Greenwich Point Wharf.

Half a million-dollar boost for HH works program Hunters Hill local roads and infrastructure works will receive a half a million-dollar boost under a Federal Government grant program.

Hunter’s Hill Council resolved to utilise the $455,733 from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program Extension to fund a range of eligible projects.

These include: a new pedestrian refuge island on Manning Road; a street tree planting program; footpath reconstruction; stormwater drainage inspections; relining of failed pipelines and road resurfacing. The works are expected to be completed by 30 June 2021.

Lane Cove local broadens social network among over 50s on Stitch

It also offers a platform for online discussions with other members around the world, group travel events and the opportunity for members to create their own activities for others to join.

“I joined Stitch four years ago because I wanted to make new friends of both sexes,” says Lane Cove local, Anne-Marie Johnstone (pictured). “It is unique in that it focuses on helping over 50s stay connected socially and find the company they need.”

It has changed my life so much. I have not only made new friends with people that live near me in Lane Cove, but I’ve also made great new connections with people from all over Sydney.”

Andrew Dowling who developed Stitch in 2014 has a social enterprise background. He recognised that there was a need for a very different kind of companionship site to help older people connect socially and make new friends.

“Our grand vision when we developed Stitch was to help improve the lives of people over 50 in every country around the world, and provide an answer to the social isolation and loneliness that everyone ultimately faces at some point in their lives,” he says.

Stitch offers its users different options with activities planned all over Sydney. “You can play cards, have a picnic, go for a walk, take a trip on the harbour, see a show, even find traveling companions and everything is popular and well attended,” Anne-Marie adds.

The Name Game

The hoopla in the US is retreating at last, though the election results remain hotly debated, decried and denied by many. But sifting through reams of analysis, I think I’ve pinpointed the central issue. It went right down to the wire, not because of polarisation, voter fraud or a pervasive sense of distorted reality. It all came down to the candidates’ names.

The name Joe Biden conjures up a certain boy next door kind of image. Bridge players know the trump card is the most powerful and defeats all others. Whereas Biden is an Anglo-Saxon name with roots to the name Button. And where there’s danger of the outgoing President’s moniker throwing up the vision of a white duck in a blue waistcoat, his image is redeemed by his surname.

The Democrats must be thanking their lucky stars their candidate doesn’t go by Joe Button, who would surely have been unable to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Fiction writers will tell you name choice is an essential tool to shape the character in the reader’s mind. If you want someone that’s smart, strong and resourceful, Katniss Everdeen is going to get you a lot further than Kylie Jones.

In Iceland, with few exceptions, a person’s last name indicates the first name of their father (patronymic) or in some cases mother (matronymic), followed by -son (‘son’) or -dóttir (‘daughter’). My Icelandic name by that reckoning would be Elizabeth Grahamdottir, which sounds rather grand if a bit of a mouthful.

But surnames are a relatively new thing, first used by European nobility and wealthy landowners. Merchants, townspeople and eventually rural folk adopted the custom over several centuries until everyone had to have one (thank the good old Tax Man for that).

The Icelanders take their naming heritage very seriously. It’s so enshrined that until recently, any first names not previously used had to first be approved by the Icelandic Naming Committee. In 2016, the Naming Committee refused to accept the names of Duncan and Harriet Cardew—Icelandic-born children of a British father and an Icelandic mother—because their names did not meet the criteria for being added to the registry of approved names, causing all sorts of problems with the passport office.

Smith is one of the most common surnames around because a smith made something, and there were a lot of them. There were blacksmiths, shoesmiths, arrowsmiths, swordsmiths and goldsmiths amongst others. A greensmith worked with copper, a whitesmith with tin. Sickle making was a big enough thing to have its own name – sicksmith.

But back to Donald, who’s constant claims of cheating and voter fraud have marked the end of his administration.

Vocabulary.com tells us that to ‘trump’ is to outrank or defeat someone or something, often in a highly public way. But the term ‘trump’ originally implied a deceptive form of victory involving cheating, though this has lapsed out of modern use.

But Smith is the just Anglo name version, as many other countries had their own names for their smiths, such as Faber (Latin), Schmidt (German), Gow (Celtic), Herrero (Spanish) and the East European Kovacs or Kowalski.

Maybe Donald’s defining legacy can be its resurrection.

And you just know someone called Uriah Heap is never going to be likeable.

I’m sorry to report if you have a name associated with the church, like Abbott, Pope or Bishop, it was most likely your ancestor’s nickname, linked to play acting. And if your grandiose surname is in the plural form, like Squires, your

Interview: Adrian Lee

A preeminent medical microbiologist, Lane Cove local Adrian Lee had led an extraordinary life garnering several outstanding, notable achievements. He has a love for “squiggly bugs” and is a self-confessed lover of rodent intestines. Once President’s Lecturer of the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases, his favourite thing to spread is enthusiasm, which is now part and parcel of his work as convenor and president of LaVoce, Lane Cove’s community choir.

Adrian’s much loved squiggly bugs: Helicobacter muridarum

H

ow much can be crammed into one life? Adrian Lee, long-time Lane Cove resident and known to many as the President of local choir LaVoce, may very well be the envy of us procrastinators.

His memoirs “An Enthusiastic Life: Family, Guts, Academia and Leadership” reveal a man who has led a jam-packed, not-a-moment-wasted, noteworthy and above all, happy life. He jokes in his memoirs that he is often distracted by Fox Sports. It is terribly hard to believe.

We meet in a café in Lane Cove’s plaza, just after the first wave of COVID restrictions have lifted. It is a fitting time to meet Emeritus Professor Adrian Lee, a medical microbiologist. We lightly touch on the subject of the pandemic, after all, it would be remiss not to ask him if we can expect a speedy vaccination. Adrian reassures that the world’s pharma companies will respond with utmost speed, motivated by the potential of a massive payday at the end of the lockdown tunnel and unprecedented government support.

This was by no means layman’s conjecture – Adrian has very direct experience in medical research and immunology.

Over the course of the last decade, the words “gut microbiome” have appeared in all sorts of marketing campaigns.

Remember when we were all encouraged to swap out the shots of tequila for Yakult? It was hard to decipher what was snake oil and what wasn’t.

If there ever was a person able to cut through the gut crap, it’s Adrian.

“Since the first animals crawled out of the primordial slime, bacteria have colonised the intestinal tract in numbers greater than the cells of the beast they inhabited.

Over the millennia, these organisms have evolved to the mutual benefit of the host, protecting us from invading pathogens and helping contribute to our metabolism,” he

says, adding that “no one should be surprised at recent revelations of the impact of gut bacteria on our wellbeing.”

Adrian’s early career as a microbiologist at the University of New South Wales saw him delving into the then little understood intestinal flora.

He was the leader of a large research team investigating Helicobacter pylori and the diseases peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. He was the first to develop a small-animal model of helicobacter infection and to show the potential of immunization against the gastric pathogen. This work led to a major commercial partnership to develop a potential vaccine which did not proceed, he reveals, “as big pharma sees little reward in sponsoring projects that would only benefit the developing world where these diseases remain a problem.”

Adrian was awarded the Kincaid Smith Medal of the Royal Australasian College of Medicine in 1995. In 1999, he became the President’s Lecturer of the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases.

The particular focus of his work in the gut was the mucus lining.

From 1968 onwards, he had grown spiral bacteria that inhabited the lining and so he was well placed to contribute to the overall understanding of the spiral bug H. pylori. He then spent ten years travelling the world trying to convince doctors that ulcers could be cured by antibacterial therapy, a time that he describes as “wonderfully exciting and fulfilling for a scientist.”

It was this work that led to an invitation for Adrian and his wife Nerissa to attend the presentation of the Nobel Prize in Sweden for the discovery of Helicobacter pylori to Australia’s Robin Warren and Barry Marshall – Adrian’s invitation being a clear acknowledgement by Warren and Marshall of his undisputed personal contribution to the findings.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN AT HOME TERRARIUM Materials + Plants: Any glass vessel with a lid, such as coffee jar/bottle can be used. A basic terrarium requires just 4 ingredients - small pebbles (for drainage), Charcoal (to neutralise odours), soil and plants.

For a plant to thrive in a closed terrarium they must love moisture, shade and humidity. These are my favourite terrarium plants, all of which are available from nurseries in the Sydney locality.

Terrariums, have once again risen in popularity and are a great choice for apartment dwellers and plant owners who are time or space poor. Terrariums provide an almost foolproof way of nurturing and displaying plants that need humidity and moisture to thrive. They provide a tropical ecosystem under glass that would otherwise be unachievable in most homes.

- Firstly place 4-5cm of pebbles in base, followed by a small amount of charcoal.

- Place plant(s) on top of charcoal and gently fill around the base with similar amount of soil.

- Decorative moss, rocks, figurines, shells can be added on to the top layer.

- Carefully add water to the terrarium, just enough to reach the top of the pebble layer. Place the on lid and you are done!

- Over the next 24 hours a fine mist of condensation should become visible at the top of your terrarium. If instead, your vessel has large droplets of moisture, take the lid off for an hour or two to allow some of this to evaporate).

Keeping your terrarium well: - Your terrarium will need rewatering whenever there is no condensation at the top of the jar/vessel (probably every couple of months). Additionally, you can give an occasional wipe down to clean the glass.

- Trim your plants if/when overcrowding occurs, with a long-handled scissors.

- Make sure you keep your terrarium in a bright location as it needs light to breathe and grow (avoid hot areas and harsh light). If your room is too dark, simply place under a lamp containing a LED bulb for eight hours a day (connect a timer). This will replicate the sun’s rays and enable it to grow.

Christmas/New Year 2021/22 – where to?

I don’t need to tell you that, for Australian travel agents, this last Christmas/New Year season was very different from previous festive seasons …. I know it was for you too. By Adrienne Witteman.

But to explain. Usually in December we are we are frantically busy with last minute bookings and documentation, just prior to the Christmas/New Year holidays. And then while we are supposed to be enjoying some welcome downtime, there are wild snow storms in America that necessitate our rerouting or rescuing our ski bunny families. Or there is a cyclone in Fiji and it’s the same scenario only closer to home. Or a plane fails to arrive on time, meaning Mr and Mrs Cruisers have missed the boat…. Help!

While enjoying the pleasures of a hibernating holiday in Sydney last month, I continued to access my emails and field client enquiries on a daily basis. What was particularly notable is the level of marketing by Japan and Japanese tourist interests.

I spent one of the best years of my life there and so I am a sucker for all things Japanese – and believe me, Japan has much to offer.

Things seldom go wrong in Japan during the festive season. The worst that might happen is that you are ill-prepared for the fact that the country almost shuts down for 3 days over New Year. So you need to be somewhere with a modicum of “open”, with something to see or do.

For example, near temples to observe the procession of beautiful kimono clad women who go to pray for their ancestors. Or in a city that offers picturesque walks or sites, e.g. Kyoto or Kurashiki or Himeji Castle.

It is my go-to country when a family comes seeking a place that is safe, clean, simultaneously old and new, quirky, and cultural. And with something to fascinate every age group, from the very young to the very old. I believe it is unique among all the countries I have ever visited. It should

Speaking of bathing, winter is the best time for visiting an onsen and indulging in a ritual proven over many centuries to be both relaxing and reinvigorating.

Those famous snow monkeys know a good thing or two for sure ….

I also love winter food in Japan. It’s hearty, flavoursome fare with richly concentrated umami - think udon noodle soups so hot that you must put aside your prejudices about slurping, sukiyaki made sensuously silky by dipping in beaten raw egg, nikuman (steam buns) that constitute the perfect snack – and that’s only some of what is on offer. How about Kentucky Fried Chicken, as customary on Christmas Eve in Japan as turkey or ham in Australia.

With all that there is to see, experience and eat in winter in Japan, I hope you are inspired to consider that destination for YOUR next end of year holiday. I can promise you untold pleasures, and of course you’ll have the benefit of my expert advice! Certainly I wished I could have been there for Christmas/New Year 2020/2021.

Kelly’s Bush: the special parcel of bushland on the Hunter’s Hill peninsula that was saved from development 50 years ago WORDS: NICOLA RICHES

L

ast year when Australia’s legendary union secretary, activist and Green Party member Jack Mundey passed away a note was placed at the entrance of Kelly’s Bush in Hunters Hill.

It read: “Dear Jack, Thanks for teaming up with those other heroes and fighting for Kelly’s Bush all those years ago. I haven’t walked through here in 15 years without thinking of you. You cared about heritage, you cared about this city and you cared about us. Your legacy is huge. Rest in Peace, mate.”

The battle for Kelly’s Bush is well known both locally, across Sydney, Australia and overseas. However, the story bears repeating for new generations and those who walk through those 12 acres of bushland on the Hunters Hill peninsula unaware of its place in history.

Kelly’s Bush is the site of the world’s first green ban – the significance of which simply can’t be overstated.

It took 13 women 13 years to save it. On 16th June 1971 the green ban on the site came into effect. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the green ban that has protected Kelly’s Bush.

A brief history Kelly’s Bush derives its name from Mr Thomas H. Kelly who owned 19 acres of land on the foreshore of Hunter’s Hill, where he established The Smelting Company in 1892.

In 1967 Kelly’s Smelting Company moved to Alexandria and AV Jennings took a two-year option to purchase 12 acres of the site; the other seven acres having already been given over to the creation of Weil Park. The plan was to construct 147 units, including three buildings eight-storeys high. So began often fractious negotiations between Council, the State Planning Authority (SPA) and AV Jennings. At one point, AV Jennings ‘sacrificed’ five acres to SPA so it could retain some natural foreshore on the proviso it could seek clearance to build 25 substantial single dwellings instead.

In 1979, 13 local women, most life-long Liberal voters, gathered to stop AV Jennings going ahead with the development. They called themselves “The Battlers” and were led by President Betty James and Secretary Kath Lehany. Highly organised and utterly devoted, they laid down the blueprint for modern day activism.

The Sydney Morning Herald published a love letter written by the group outlining why the place was so special – how it was the only visible green space from the city on the foreshore of the Paramatta River; how it provided their children space to play; how it was a pocket of bushland carrying significant First Nation’s history and how it harboured native flora so synonymous with Sydney and the local area that it was vital it be saved. They organised campaigns, protests,

and courted the media over tea and homemade baked goods. Their well-mannered, conservative and relentless approach was impossible to ignore.

However, despite their work, in 1971 the Minister for Local Government signed a notice rezoning the land from Reserved Open Space to Residential, effectively giving AV Jennings the green light.

The Battlers considered their options, and in what proved to be a stroke of genius, they approached the Executive of the Builders Labourers’ Federation (BLF) including President Bob Pringle requesting their support.

Jack Mundey, who at the time was secretary of the BLF, tells the rest of the story: “They were passionate about their cause and highlighted the fact that this bush was the last bit of bush on those reaches of the Parramatta River. We decided that the Bush be saved but insisted that the Battlers call a public meeting in Hunters Hill to determine that they enjoyed widespread public support in the area…and that it was not just a handful of residents concerned with their immediate amenity.

Over 500 people met and formally requested our union to impose a ban on work at Kelly’s Bush. We acceded to this public request and a ban on work was imposed. AV Jennings said they would ignore the ban and use non-union labour to do the work.

A fitting response came from BLF members on a highrise office block under construction in North Sydney being built by AV Jennings: over 100 workers met and decided that if Jennings carried out the threat to build in Kelly’s Bush, that half-completed office block would be left halfcompleted as a monument to Kelly’s Bush. This had the desired effect and Jennings backed down.”

Friends of Kelly’s Bush In 1993 Kelly’s Bush was handed over to the care of Hunters Hill Council and in 1995 local volunteers began bush regeneration. The Friends of Kelly’s Bush was subsequently established as a landcare community group in 1996 and Battler Joan Croll became its first President.

Within that group are the ‘weeders’ – or ‘the Kelly’s Bushcarers’ as they are more formally known.

It is this group that meets once a week to manage the weeds and take care of regeneration. Group members include Peter McMahon, Lee McMahon, Leonie Parker, Maureen Flowers, James Millar, Rosemary Miller, Jill Stephenson, Liz Hinton, Maureen O’Brien, Kate Botting (President of Friends of Kelly’s Bush) and John Stephenson.

The team has adopted what is known as the ‘Bradley Method’ to minimise the growth of the weeds and to allow the native flora to flourish.

Celebrating the world’s first green ban

Burgmann explains: “‘Green bans’ and ‘builders labourers’ became household terms for Sydneysiders during the 1970s. A remarkable form of environmental activism was initiated by the builder’s labourers employed to construct the office-block skyscrapers, shopping precincts and luxury apartments that were rapidly encroaching upon green spaces or replacing older-style commercial and residential buildings in Sydney. The builder’s labourers refused to work on projects that were environmentally or socially undesirable.

This green bans movement, as it became known, was the first of its type in the world.”

More than 45 green bans were imposed in Sydney, while others sprang up in all of Australia’s metropolitan areas.

On August 29th 2021 the Friends of Kelly’s Bush will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the saving of Kelly’s Bush. They will also celebrate how it came to be the site of the world’s first green ban.

Macquarie University and President of the Legislative Council of NSW (Labor), was actively involved in the green ban movement. Her book, ‘Green Bans, Red Union, The Saving of a City’ mentions Kelly’s Bush. It says, “The ‘middle-class matrons’ of Hunters Hill discovered this union of manual labourers was more sensitive to the natural beauty of Kelly’s Bush and more aware of the need for its preservations than conservative politicians and newspaper editors, and they were radicalised permanently by their experience.”

Battle Finally Won Jack Mundey declared the Kelly’s Bush the site of the world’s first green ban. Premier Askin attempted to have it lifted in 1974 but failed. In 1976, newly-elected Premier Neville Wran declared there would be no development of Kelly’s Bush and in 1983 – 13 years after the Battlers formed - he announced that the State Government had purchased Kelly’s Bush as Open Space.

The legacy of the Battlers Local resident, writer, comedian and radio/TV host, Tim Ross filmed a short video from Kelly’s Bush in October last year, only four months after the passing of Jack Mundey. He opined: “It shouldn’t be here. It should have been knocked over and the trees ripped up, and this would have been someone’s personal and private view, but I sit here because a group of people cared, not about the present time, but the future for their children, and their children’s children.”

Kelly’s Bush wouldn’t be what it is now without the Battlers and Jack Mundey. But it also wouldn’t be the amazing space it is now without the Friends of Kelly’s Bush, a group that formed when Kelly’s Bush was overrun with weeds such as privet, lantana, morning glory, honeysuckle and fleabane.

The Kelly’s Bush weeders regularly hold working bees and are always on the lookout for new members. They meet every Monday at 8.00 am and stop for tea at 10.00 am, which is the perfect time to introduce yourself and have a chat.

Lane Cove – a work of art Over the past decade you may have noticed more public art out and about in Lane Cove. That’s because there has been an 80% increase in public artworks installed within the last 10 years.

rom small scale, community projects such as street libraries and traffic signal box artworks to investment in statement pieces as part of new major projects, Lane Cove is now home to an impressive collection of close to 50 public artworks.

Council will soon be considering whether to proceed with a proposed public art mural series along Birdwood Lane. With this project potentially being Council’s largest mural project to date, it is a timely opportunity to consider the growth of the colourful, vibrant and meaningful artworks encountered in our day to day lives in Lane Cove.

The most recent work was installed at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre as part of the finalisation of the new outdoor pool and grandstand. The new artwork ‘Concurrents’, located near the starting blocks of the outdoor pool, was created by Grant Molony, Jason

Goulding and Russ Molony. The work explores the ongoing theme of water and how it flows through time and space to make connections with the natural world and with people of all ages. Over thousands of years, the Lane Cove River has nurtured the lives of people living along its tree lined banks and today, the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre provides a space for families and friends.

“As a topographical map in the style of Australia’s first peoples, we see travel lines connecting special sites with our wonderful flora and fauna. We see old man Banksia, the uniquely soft Flannel Flower and we see the Powerful Owl – Australia’s largest. The circles are the camp sites.

The shapes surrounding them are the people. The fluid lines are the water flows – moving in and out of the camp sites and joining all together. Look beyond the surface. Step into the

spirit of what you see. Let its calming message take you to a place of warmth, love and peaceful continuity”.

– Concurrents (2020) Also joining the Lane Cove public art collection in 2020 were two works by artist April Pine that form the work, People in Place. Located in The Canopy, ‘Father and child’ and ‘Seated woman’ are monuments of the local citizen, engaging with the hum drum of local life while making the ordinary that bit more extraordinary.

The grid structure of April Pine’s signature style plays with the idea of ‘memory and movement’. The sculptures are present and solid from one perspective but disappear when in perfect alignment in elevation as though invisible. Together the steel sculptures weigh in at approximately 700kg. They are made from corten, a weathered steel and will continue to patina and change colour over the first

April’s works have previously been exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea. ‘People in Place’ is her first permanent public installation in Sydney.

Council has also been using public art to deter graffiti and enhance public space through the installation of artworks on public infrastructure such as walls and traffic signal boxes. At Blackman Park, artist Matt McLarty has created Expression!, a mural on the side of the new Puppy Tails Café. The mural conveys the multi-use vibrancy of Blackman Park through the expressions of sport, play and recreation. It’s hard to miss the kaleidoscope of colours which capture the diversity of people and activities that occupy the park.

Matt McLarty is also one of several artists involved in transforming traffic signal boxes into masterpieces as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to enliven local streetscapes. 14 signal boxes are now adorned with public art that represents all that is great about the local area. Artists have also been busy decorating Street Libraries which have been installed across the

Lane Cove area. These mini wooden houses hold books that you are able to donate, borrow and/or swap for free.

The best place to find out the location of these artworks is to visit Council’s map, www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/ streetsidegallery For those who are looking for a destination beyond the village, Greenwich Baths plays host to a sandstone sculpture ‘Resignation’ by artist Michael Purdy who is the son of the artwork’s subject, John Purdy.

John Spencer Purdy was born in 1935 to parents Cecil and Anne. His father was an avid chess player and was multiple winner of Australian

Chess Championships as well as an international chess master. John’s mother held the lease of Greenwich Baths which meant John spent a major part of his life living in Greenwich and making regular use of the Greenwich Baths. Like his father, John was an avid chess player. He was Australian Junior Chess Champion in 1951 and became the youngest Australian Chess Champion in 1954.

He won the title again in 1963.This artwork was exhibited as part of Sculpture by the Sea in 2014.

Nominations open for Citizenship Awards: I am sure there are plenty of examples of hard work, kindness and success amongst our talented community over the past 12 months.

It would be wonderful to be able to recognise these efforts at our annual Citizenship Awards evening. However we need the community’s help to make sure we have a selection of worthy nominees. Potential village facelift: Council is applying for funds under the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s “Your High Street” Grant Program to replace the existing dated brick paving on Longueville Road and Burns Bay Road with paving that matches the Plaza. This would give the area a much-needed facelift and help bring a sense of continuity to the shopping precinct. The proposed area would be on Longueville Road between Birdwood Lane and Austin Street on the western side, and between Little Street and Gallery Lane Cove on the eastern side. The proposed area on Burns Bay Road is between the Plaza (Birdwood Lane) and Birahlee Reserve on the southern side, and between the Plaza (Rosenthal Ave) and No. 55 Burns Bay Road on the northern side. I hope to be able to provide an update on the outcome of the Grant in the coming months.

Grant Funding Available: Local community groups are encouraged to apply for Council’s Community Grants which assist communitybased programs that support and enhance the wellbeing of Lane Cove residents and the community. Local organisations who are seeking financial assistance in the 2021/2022 financial year should visit Council’s website www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/grants to access the relevant information and application form. Applications close on 8 March 2021.

A Cultural Performance Venue Hire Subsidy program is also available to help not-for-profit performance groups subsidise venue hire fees. This program follows the same timeframe as the Community Grants program.

hances are you have someone in your life occasionally prone to blowing hot air.

You know the type - the friend who can’t always be relied upon to follow through on their verbal commitments or the family member who occasionally exaggerates their life achievements when in the presence of others.

But could the solution to your collective frustrations be just on your doorstep?

The Lane Cove Concert Band (LCCB) is calling for recruits for its beginner program to encourage those with a decent set of lungs to put them to good use.

Formed in 1963 with just a handful of members but now boasting up to 180 members across three concert bands, a woodwind ensemble, a jazz ensemble and a big band, the LCCB is best known for its performances at council-run events such as citizenship ceremonies, ANZAC Day services and Christmas in the Park.

The organisation has also drawn acclaim for raising community spirits following its performances at local hospitals and retirement villages.

Boasting members from a diverse range of occupations, its past alumni includes such notable names as Mark Brown, the current conductor of the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra who has worked with Sydney Symphony, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and trumpeter David Elton who is best known for his time with the London Symphony Orchestra.

LCCB president Michelle Casiglia say the beginner program for adults, being held for just the third time in the band’s 58-year history, aims to encourage community members to take up woodwind, brass or percussion instrument with a view to one day performing with one of the group’s six different ensembles.

Casiglia, herself a graduate of the 2011 beginner programme, says the offering is unique to that offered by

other bands in that participants are not required to have any prior musical experience.

“I had never played a musical instrument before but had always wanted to even as a child. I ended up with flute because there was one spare to hire, so I started learning at 38 years of age. I picked up my instrument on the Tuesday morning and went to band on Tuesday night not knowing how to read music and could barely put my instrument together. It has now become a great passion of mine and since then I have started having piano lessons as well.”

When it comes to membership of the LCCB age too is of little concern with members aged anywhere from 18 up to people in their 70s, she says. Nor is there any limit on the number of applicants that can be accepted onto the beginner program.

Casiglia says all that is required of beginner participants is to identify their chosen instrument – encompassing everything from the French horn to the saxophone – and commit to a two-hour rehearsal at the Waterview Community Centre once a week.

In exchange for a small joining fee of $130, all wouldbe musicians will be given a term of rehearsal time, and granted full access to the band folder which includes music and a band book.

Ideally, participants will also obtain some one-onone tutoring on their instrument with LCCB able to offer

guidance in terms of suitable tutors, as well as having a selection of instruments for hire.

Casiglia says the organisation’s primary purpose is to “bring people together and form a community through music”.

“We are very keen to encourage people to learn new skills and to reach their potential whatever level they’re playing at.

“All our members have a love of music and musicmaking. They’re friendly, supportive of one another and enthusiastic. They are also adventurous and determined and very community-minded.”

“It’s not just about learning the instrument, it’s so much more than that and while the idea of launching into something new might be daunting – it’s so worth it.”

Why going for a swim in the ocean can be good for you, and for nature

Summer is the season when we like to cool off with a plunge into water.

For some it’s in the local or backyard swimming pool, but others prefer the salt water of the ocean.

ometimes referred to as “wild swimming”, it is happening at many of the beaches, coves, bays or estuaries in Australia.

But wild swimming is not only good for our health, it can also be good for ocean and beach ecologies too.

Annual competitive ocean swims, such as the Byron Bay Winter Whales and the Bondi to Bronte, are a mainstay of many Australian coastal towns and city suburbs. Daily and weekly recreational swimming groups are also well established at many of our beaches.

In European cultures, immersion in salt water has long been believed to be good for human health and seaside resorts there remain popular.

Ocean swimmers often wax lyrical about the health and wellbeing benefits they get from their regular ocean swims. And research from both the humanities and sciences backs up these claims.

It’s common to hear swimmers describe their troubles and anxieties washing away in the water. Like a daily cleansing, they emerge from their swim feeling energised, calm and ready to face their days.

Journalist and broadcaster Julia Baird has written about how her daily swims in Sydney inspire a sense of awe that shifts how she navigates other challenges in her life.

Other research talks about swimming as a process of “therapeutic accretion” whereby the pleasures of our regular short dips and longer swims in the ocean layer onto us and “build to develop a resilient wellbeing”.

In the UK, online movements such as #risefierce and Mental Health Swims promote regular swimming as a positive practice for our health and wellbeing.

Part of this is accepting that ocean conditions can change day to day.

Some days are calm and clear, others

are wild with waves and winds. If we want to swim, we have to learn to navigate the conditions we are dealt.

This capacity for decision-making in the face of challenge is helpful for a sense of confidence and resilience – something that has been clear during COVID-19 lockdowns around the world.

For swimmers, the water offers other rewards.

Swimming, like other ocean sports like surfing and diving, is a way of immersing us in ecologies and bringing us into contact with animals, plants, weather, waves and rocks in a way that we cannot control.

We may encounter fish, birds, rays, turtles, cephalopods and other animals. All are reported to help with a sense of wellbeing. This highlights how we are part of these ecologies too.

The recent film My Octopus Teacher resonated with many

people who swim and who regularly encounter the same animals.

Care for the oceans Being part of an ecology means we have responsibilities too. In Australia, we need to take a lead from Indigenous Australian people to care for the sea country we swim in.

Ocean plastics, sewage and the antibiotics in agricultural run-off are a potential problem for our health as we swim in polluted oceans.

Our encounters with animals that live close to shore can impact their health too, so we need to remember to respect their space.

Many cultures are aware of the interconnections between people and the environments they live in. For example, Native Hawaiian and Māori researchers write about their links to oceans, and the Ama women in Japan connect with underwater soundscapes as they dive for abalone.

In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are deeply aware of the connections between the health of people and the land, sea and sky countries they live on.

People cannot be healthy if Country is not healthy, nor can Country be

healthy if people are not.

And that’s why wild swimming could be good for ocean and beach ecologies too. The more we learn about the health and wellbeing impacts of ocean and coastal ecologies, the more we should feel invested in taking care of them.

Let’s swim together The lack of control we have over conditions in ocean waters can be

frightening, and the same encounters that thrill some people are terrifying for others.

Even for experienced swimmers, drowning is a very real risk. Between July 2019 and June 2020, 248 people drowned in Australia, with 125 of those coastal drowning deaths.

For others their fear of shark attacks and encounters is enough to keep them out of ocean water.

So if you want to give the ocean a try this summer, many people find comfort and safety by wild swimming with others. This is reflected in the growth of swimming groups.

Websites such as oceanswims.com and Swim Sisters list ocean swimming groups and competition swims around Australia. It’s easy to find information through your local community too.

Swimming in the sea can be as simple as taking that first plunge in kneedeep water, or as challenging as an hours-long marathon along the coast.

Whatever you prefer, take the time to enjoy being immersed in a watery world.

disease. Exposure to saliva can occur, quite obviously, through kissing and the sharing of drink glasses, cutlery and straws. It is most prevalent among parents and their children.

Periodontal disease is an ongoing bacterial infection deep in the gums and bone around the teeth. It is often silent and painless until it becomes an emergency.

Recent research has also confirmed that the infection can be transmitted from person to person.

after research showed that saliva contact between family members carried the disease.

Periodontal disease bacteria travels from the pockets around the teeth into saliva. Transmission of the infection through saliva is influenced by how often a person is exposed to saliva and their susceptibility to getting the

Lessons from 2020 2020 and COVID threw us many challenges as our lives were changed in many ways. As a result, various social experiments on our community were inadvertently done. In the physiotherapy clinic we saw the effects this had on peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musculoskeletal system.

The biggest issue we saw was the lack of general activity with many people. This may have been due to working from home and being sedentary rather than the inadvertent exercise of walking around the office, to the coffee shop and to and from work. It also came from people not going to the gym due to COVID restrictions and ongoing concerns.

These simple reductions in activity level resulted in an increase in people with pain in their muscles and joints. Initially we observed an increase in neck pain and later back and knee problems. This pattern highlighted the importance of both general movement and strengthening exercise in helping keep our musculoskeletal system happy.

Lane Cove Theatre returns with Jekyll and Hyde The epic struggle between good and evil comes to life on stage in Lane Cove this month when Lane Cove Theatre Company presents the musical phenomenon, Jekyll and Hyde at St Aidan’s Performance Space in Longueville.

he production marks a return to the stage for Lane Cove Theatre Company whose other 2021 offerings will include Steel Magnolias, A Streetcar Named Desire and Hercules, the Christmas Panto!

Based on the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson and featuring a thrilling score of pop-rock hits from multi-Grammy- and Tony-nominated Frank Wildhorn and double-Oscar- and Grammy-winning Leslie Bricusse, murder and chaos are pitted against love and virtue in this sweeping gothic musical.

A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve some of mankind’s most challenging medical dilemmas. Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatments, accidentally unleashing his inner demons along with the man that the world would come to know as Mr. Hyde.

Jekyll and Hyde is directed by Lochie Beh, with musical direction by Stephen Dula and features a large and talented cast drawn from all over Sydney. Lane Cove veteran Trent Gardiner takes the role of Dr Jekyll with Joseph Raso as his monstrous alter ego Mr Hyde. Olivia Oxley plays Emma, Samantha Wills is Lucy with Isaac Downey as Utterson.

Other featured actors include Doug Rumble, Tisha Kelemen, Christine Forbes, Jindri DeSilva, Emily Saint Smith, Belinda Korner, Ricki Jade, Laura Dale, Amber Johnson, Kathryn Thomas, Lucy Koschel, Jordan Berry, Georgie Dula and Benjamin Walsh.

Julie Percy Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators?

We are so fortunate to experience Lane Cove environs, and be part of the vast history of artists working and residing in and around Lane Cove. There are many and varied avenues to explore one’s artistic passion. The example of Lloyd Rees the founder of Lane Cove Art Society, and many other local artists have generated a culture of excellence in art.

Can you describe to us the type of artist you are, and the medium you work in?

I have been exploring art for over 20 years. A piece of charcoal and paper can be totally engrossing.

I have painted in oils, acrylics, pastels, and printmaking, however I now concentrate on watercolour.

I love its transparency and luminosity, although it can be totally frustrating and unforgiving.

What motivates you to ‘create’?

When creating an artwork I can lose myself in the process becoming totally unaware of time. I enjoy the energy of producing a visual image inspired by the Australian landscape and our coast - colours, textures, shapes. I enjoy sketching outdoors and from my basic sketches I like to build up a work. I am always seeking to capture light.

Where did you learn your craft, or is it something you were blessed with?

I think I could always draw.

However, I was over 50 when I had my first drawing class with renowned watercolour painter, Helen Goldsmith, who taught me “to see”, meaning to really observe, look at detail, and one shape in relation to another. Later, I enrolled in the Diploma of Fine Arts at Meadowbank TAFE , concentrating on drawing and oil painting. I have had numerous tutors since and each has generously shared their experience, expertise and been encouraging.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts, and if so, how would that manifest?

Lane Cove endeavours to provide many and varied activities for artists of many ages. I am particularly thrilled young children, and teenagers are given the opportunity to do courses and exhibit their works. I would encourage the parents of these families to also get involved and in their busy schedules, try and put aside sometime to create personally.

How would we go about seeing your works?

I exhibit at the Lane Cove Art Society exhibitions. I have had a few commissions which were happily received.

Which artists/creators inspire you?

During my watercolour journey I have been inspired by many tutors, however, I invariably return to John Singer Sargent, Turner and Lloyd Rees for inspiration, using their examples of colour, composition and technique. Very recently John Caldwell (Blackheath) has inspired me with his light acrylic washes, into which he draws with watercolour pencil. My next challenge - not to copy but create my own works.

Glass Armours NC Qin • 3-27 February 2021 Glass Armours explores the tension between the image we think we project and the reality of our experience. The artist uses glass to suggest a phantom of the ego, playing on the beauty and translucency of the medium. Glass Armours is part of the regional project Lunar North Confluence, exhibitions celebrating Lunar New Year on the North Shore. Glass Armours is also a part of Lane Cove Council’s Sunset in the Village Festival.

New Adult Art Classes

The Gallery will introduce several new adult art classes at the end of January/ early February 2021.

Popular and experienced artist and teacher Ashley Frost will teach a new Mixed Media painting class on Tuesday afternoons 12.30-3pm.

Rhonda Pryor will lead a new class Extending your Painting Practice on Fridays 10am-12.30pm Master printmaker and artist Susan Baran will guide both beginners to intermediate level practitioners in developing their suite of printmaking skills in a new Saturday weekly printmaking term course from 9.30am12.30pm.

Also returning will be two watercolour classes, on Tuesdays 9.30am-12pm with Amanda Doctor and Thursdays 10am12.30pm with Josefia Lemon.

obody in the apartment building could remember when the vine had been planted. Old Mr Williams had been living in Number Twelve since the block was built, back in the late seventies. The original common gardens, he said, consisted of front lawn and a Marigold bed beside the letterboxes. And maybe a naked lady fountain.

“Red brick and Buffalo Grass.

Pretty standard stuff and good enough for me and Pam, I can tell you,” he croaked, dipping a digestive into his tea. “No idea where that vine came from, though. Some tenant probably planted it. We’ve had some crackers come through the building in my time.” He slurped at the brim of his paper cup. “Thing’s been spreading for decades now. Can’t say it bothers me, but Pam didn’t like it, God rest her soul. Said it was some bloody foreign weed.”

But now, the vine, in all its green and burnished red verdency, had crept up the side brickwork and covered almost half of the building. It wasn’t unattractive and some people thought it brought an almost European aesthetic to the suburban building.

“Oh, Darling, it’s the sort of place you expect to see cyclists pedaling past, the smell of fresh baguettes wafting from their wicker bike baskets,” Mary Kravitz, an overly imaginative local real estate agent, would often titter at her clients. Many locals didn’t know what a baguette was, but this didn’t seem to faze Mary.

The Marigold bed and the alleged naked lady fountain were long gone.

But the vine weaved through the latticed wrought iron balconies, stretching out elegant tendrils into a clutch that seemed more caress than vice. Opinions differed on the vine.

Some owners claimed it weakened the mortar, and cracks were starting to appear. Whether this was due to vine infiltration or the natural aging of the building, was still a topic of debate in the Owners’ Cooperation Meeting. Although not on the agenda for tonight, the remaining item always seemed to be, ‘To vine or not to vine?’

“Oh, I love the vine. It’s so pretty.

It’s part of the street appeal and even raises value,” said Rebecca from 36 TVO

She nodded her blonde head vigorously at her husband, trying to rouse his affirmation. He dutifully murmured agreement.

“Until it brings the whole bloody place down!” snorted Vera from Ten. “That vine has gone unchecked since I’ve been here, and I’ve been here almost as long as Matty,” she thumbed at old Mr Williams. “Well, I for one, don’t feel inclined to pay a pretty strata damage bill that could easily be avoided.”

She slapped down her pudgy hand on the rickety folding table for effect.

Rebecca pursed her mouth, “I hardly think it will bring the building down, Vera.”

“Well,” Vera leaned her bulky frame forward, “Let’s just see what the structural report says. It took us long enough to agree to that. The damn thing’s a noxious weed. About as pretty as a swamp monster as far as I’m concerned.”

There were a few sniggers in the room, but none from Rebecca. The Chairman glanced at his watch, rubbed his forehead and sighed.

“Ok, the report is pending, so there’s nothing to decide right now about the vine…”

“It has to go,” Vera insisted.

“We don’t even know if those few little cracks are merely wear and tear. I mean it’s an old building. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” said Rebecca.

“Been growing for years. Why do anything now?” Mr Williams added, winking at Rebecca, who smiled back at him.

Vera scowled.

“And like I said, probably something to talk about when we get the report,” said the chairman, closing the meetings folder.

“We’ve talked about this for years!

I’m telling you it has to go. Bloody eyesore, it is!” Vera was getting louder, her face more florid than usual.

Rebecca’s husband walked over and opened the far window in the common room. It was a mild night, but The Vine had a way of heating up a room.

“All right. All right,” The chairman rolled his eyes and held up a hand.

“I’m going to close the meeting now

and, as previously stated, we will await the report before making a final decision on the vine.”

Vera wasn’t giving up yet, “We need that report ASAP. I request the secretary follows up to check what the hold up is.”

“I’m sure it will come through in the next couple of days, but I’ll email tomorrow. It’s only been a week,” Rebecca said, directing her response to the chairman and ignoring Vera.

A wind had started building in the past hour. The gentle whistle and rustling outside had become a louder, stronger force. Now, a few red green leaves flew into the window, carried along by a sudden gust. The chairman rushed to shut the window. Then the ten, or more, people in the common room all looked down at the speckled grey carpet. The glossy star shaped leaves of The Vine seemed to stare back at them. A wispy broken stem still quivered and pointed a curled finger towards them, accusingly. The wind had brought a chill into the night.

“The bloody thing knows we’re trying to kill it,” Mr Williams spluttered as he slapped his thigh.

Vera stared at the leaves, wideeyed, but silent.

“Um, right. Meeting closed,” The chairman declared.

Rebecca collected the milk and biscuits while the other owners threw their paper cups into the bin, and huried towards the door. Mr Williams, still chuckling, bent over to pick up the Vine strand.

“It’s a creeper, allright!” he said. “I’ll put the poor thing in a vase.”

Even Vera failed to loiter, and the residents of Wyndham Court all scurried off to seal themselves into their vine covered apartments.

LOCAL HISTORY

Longueville street connections to a NSW Premier and his family A number of the streets named in the Longueville Estate from 1872 to 1874 can be traced back to family connections with Sir Alexander Stuart. Apart from the naming of Stuart Street itself, there is Christina, Mary and Kenneth Streets (named for his wife and surviving children). Cowper Street was named for Sir Charles Cowper, also a NSW Premier, who was witness at Stuart’s wedding and fatherin-law to Stuart’s friend, Hugh Robison, and Christina’s brother, Edmund Wood.

ir Alexander Stuart was a banker, merchant and politician who served in both the NSW Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

His connection to the North Shore was through his joint ownership and subdivision of 305 acres of land in Longueville, together with his investment partnerships with land speculators and developers Richard Hayes Harnett Senior (1819-1902) and Richard Hayes Harnett Junior (18501938).

Stuart, together with the Harnett’s, lobbied for the construction of new suburban passenger rail and tram lines on the North Shore for access to their subdivisions. In the 1870s, Harnett and Stuart subdivided and sold much of their land holdings, including the Longueville Estate. They also donated the land for the building of a Congregational Church, (now part of the Uniting Kamilaroi Retirement Centre), which opened in 1878.

Alexander Stuart was born in Edinburgh in 1824 and educated at the Edinburgh Academy. He worked in Leith and Glasgow before managing a linen mill in Belfast. In 1845 he joined a large mercantile and banking firm in Calcutta.

It would appear that other members of his family were also in Calcutta around this time. His brother James was described as an ‘East India merchant’, and another brother, the Reverend Edward Craig Stuart, married in Calcutta in 1851 before moving to New Zealand where he would later become a Bishop.

Stuart moved to New Zealand around 1850 and had partnerships of varying success with good friend, Hugh Robison. Stuart then tried his luck on the Victorian goldfields before settling in Sydney in late 1852. He joined the Bank of New South Wales as Assistant Secretary, and was soon promoted to Secretary and Inspector. In 1855 he joined the prominent commercial firm of R. Towns & Co. and became a Director of the Bank of New South Wales.

In 1853, Stuart married Christiana Eliza Wood at St Paul’s, Cobbitty. The witnesses to the marriage included Charles Cowper of nearby Wivenhoe; Charlotte Cowper, who would later marry Hugh Robison; and Susannah Frances Wood.

Christiana’s brother, Edmund Wood, later married Mary Sophia Cowper, adding a family connection to the Cowper family. Stuart and his wife Christiana (sometimes spelt,

Christina), had five children, but only Mary and Kenneth would survive childhood.

Stuart began his parliamentary career with his election as the Member for East Sydney in December 1874, a position he held until November 1879. He served as Colonial Treasurer between February 1876 and March 1877. In July 1880, he was elected as the Member for Illawarra, which he represented until October 1885. He became the NSW Premier and Colonial Secretary between January 1883 and October 1885. A devout Anglican, he battled for state aid to denomination education. Stuart also advocated for the rapid extension of railways and aid to municipal institutions.

In 1884, Stuart had a stroke which left him with some paralysis. In June 1885 he was knighted, receiving the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). He resigned from the Legislative Assembly as Member for Illawarra due to his health in October 1885, and was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council in November 1885.

In 1886, Stuart went to London as the NSW Executive Commissioner for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, but shortly after its opening he took ill with typhoid fever and died in London. His wife, Christiana also died in London in 1889.

More Than A Woman

by Caitlin Moran

In 2012, Caitlin Moran published How to Be a Woman, a hilarious but touching nonfiction memoir that tackles the issues facing young women from teens to thirties from her own personal feminist perspective. It sold over a million copies. More Than a Woman is a follow-up work that addresses middle age in the same way. It’s a nonfiction memoir that draws on her personal experience but generalises to expound on the issues so many of us face with a refreshingly pragmatic take. It is, by turns, hilariously funny, deeply distressing and filled with warmth, wit and wisdom. In the prologue of More Than a Woman, a middle-aged Caitlin visits her younger self who has just finished writing How to be a Woman and is feeling quite self-satisfied for having life sorted. Older Moran laughs at the naivety of her younger self: “You are about to be required,” she says, “to hold the fabric of society together. For no pay. That’s what being a middle-aged woman is.” As Moran propounds, while your teens to thirties are all about sorting yourself out, your forties and beyond means sorting out everyone else’s problems: “Your life is about to become a call centre for people who are exploding.”

The book is structured as a day in her life with each chapter tackling a different theme. Chapter One: 7am The Hour of ‘The List’ deals with the inevitability of the ongoing tyranny of the To Do List that dominates our lives. She writes “I am one five-page list away from becoming a happy, accomplished woman with a perfect house, exemplary accounts, excellent capsule wardrobe, well-brought-up family, fabulous job and a pelvic floor so redoubtable, every trampoline will fear me.” The following chapters deal with myriad aspects of middle-aged women’s lives: sex, parenting, women’s bodies, housework, ageing, friendships and unmet aspirations with joy, irreverent humour and compassion.

Although some chapters resonated more for me than others, I was delighted, engaged and moved by this book. I laughed out loud, I cried in empathy and sympathy, I felt rage at the world we live in and have bequeathed to our children. The chapters on teenage girls and beauty, the anxiety of our children and the pain of watching helplessly when your children are suffering, were deeply moving. Moran’s honest exposition of her teenage daughter’s battle with an eating disorder is heartbreaking but hopeful. Towards the end, Moran talks about ageing, about the loss of the blitheness born of the knowledge that things can and will go wrong and then ultimately the strength that comes from knowing you will live through it. It is comforting to know that our experiences are shared and universal and that we are not alone. But despite the seriousness of much of the subject matter, this is a very funny book with acute observations and detailed dissections of the minutiae of middle aged life which will have you in stitches.

Carl, a burly Texan, caught sight of something in the baroque mirror, and jumped back, ashen faced , “well I’ll be darned, I think I saw a vampire !” he exclaimed. “Oh hush now, there ain’t no such thing” Emmylou replied.

Taking selfies from the parapet, with the foreboding Carpathian Mountains in the background, Emmylou’s head swirled, as she collapsed. “Help me up, Carl” but as she reached out her hand, the gnarled talons wrapped firmly around her wrist.

“Good evening dear lady, I’ve been waiting for you”.

Mum enjoyed a glass of sherry of an evening. I used to buy her a bottle each week. One day, on asking if she was out of sherry, she replied “yes”, so I pulled into the local drive-through. As I left the car, I noticed mum sliding down quite low in her seat and turning her face away. After finishing the transaction, I commented “I suppose I’m the only one who buys sherry these days” to which the salesperson replied “No, (pointing at mum), she comes in once a week with her shopping trolley for a bottle.” Mum! Double dipping?

God of the Wild Places Standing above the clouds on a Nepalese mountain was sublime. Our party had climbed from sea level over several days to this point, making it even more special for the exertion expended. The wonder of that wild place is etched into my being. Surrounding mountain peaks poked through the clouds, creating a surreal landscape reminiscent of islands in a frothy sea. Times of wonder such as these, are spiritual experiences, which I attribute to a Creator who revels in beauty.

Eco theology was a recent topic of study for me, focusing on the relationship between God and ecology. It is a relatively new, and increasingly urgent topic, to inform a practical religious response to benefit our planet. A motherly role, that seeks to nurture, protect and restore the created order, is suggested. One that listens to incorporate the wisdom of indigenous people, who have lived lightly on the Earth for thousands of years. One that hears the suffering of the most affected peoples on Earth, (who have contributed least to the problem) and seeks solutions with them. One that seeks to work together with scientists and all who stand for our Earth and its creatures.

Given the vast destruction industrialised humanity has wrought on our planet, a new world view is needed.

We are a co-dependent part of the whole of creation, rather than mere utilisers of its ‘resources’. Some of our dependencies have become apparent while others are still to be revealed. We humans are a needy composite of creatures anyway! Our microbiome of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses protects us against pathogens, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins.

Recognition of our role to nurture and tend our planet as a co-dependent creature, naturally leads to lifestyle adjustments. Consume only what we need and use everything acquired. (Indigenous people kill an animal and use it all, nose to tail). Choose local, minimally processed and packaged goods. Recycle as much as possible. Walking, bike riding, using public transport or even carpooling reduces our carbon footprint. Political activism to keep carbon (e.g. coal) in the ground, rather than the air, may begin to have an impact. Stand with those communities already disaffected by global warming e.g. in low lying Tuvalu (see www.unitingworld.org.au/ paradiseandpain) and Torres Strait Islands. Lessons from living through a pandemic

A

s a CEO I frequently receive newsletters and information regarding current issues in business. I recently got Four Lessons for Managing through a Pandemic.

These include “Evaluate prospective investments, even during a crisis” and “cultivate your networks.” Neither of these seemed particularly relevant to us but it made me think about what lessons I’ve learned over the past year and I also asked everybody here at Sydney Community Services what they’ve experienced.

My first thought was that some people are having a much better social life than me. Judging by the alerts from NSW Health a couple on the northern beaches appear to have eaten out about eight times in three days attended a gym, gone swimming etc…

So here are a few lessons and thoughts from 2020.

SANITISING • How to wash your hands – apparently I’ve been doing it wrong for 60 years.

• That there is a difference between hand sanitisers. It comes to something when you become a hand sanitiser snob!

• How to sanitise a shopping trolley, in fact how to sanitise everything!

• How to push a lift button without using your hand.

MASKS • How to wear a mask properly, including putting it on, taking it off and how to stop your glasses steaming up.

• How to smile when wearing a mask • How to avoid people you don’t want to see by pretending you don’t recognize them in a mask (and viceversa).

• One of our nurses writes, “I’ve learnt how to practice mindfulness so when my husband whinges about wearing a mask for his 10 minute bus trip to work, I can remain outwardly neutral but in my thoughts tell him to harden up, nurses have been wearing them for the whole day for TEN months!”

SOCIAL DISTANCING • How to protect your personal space and fend off unwanted physical attention (e.g. hugs and hand shakes) by reminding people of the social distancing rules.

• How to show someone that you are excited to see them without touching or kissing them • How to comfortably take up a whole seat on the bus without feeling like an inconvenience to society.

• Don’t touch MEN (Mouth, Ears, Nose) • How to stand perfectly inside a red circle • When making a guest list you actually have a legitimate excuse for not inviting those you really didn’t want to invite anyway!!

NEW SKILLS • How to use a QR code • How to take a temperature with a machine that looks like it has come from a MacDonalds Happy Meal • How to use Uber Eats • How to maximise your Netflix binging capacity without ever leaving the bed.

ZOOMING • How to wave in a way to tell someone they are on mute.

Thank you COVID. “ But most of all I have learned that people are very social and need human contact – much of our time has been spent ringing our isolated members of the community and just having a chat. I have also been reminded how kind and generous local people are. Whenever we put out a call for pantry items to help families and people in crisis the community responded with an overwhelming number of donations.

Overall Covid has given us lots to think about but I think the main one for me is that the most important thing is to be kind, patient and understanding.

SCS Disability Services Coordinator, Gaynor Starkey, coordinates the Disability Group Services, alongside Amanda Zhong who is the activities coordinator.

Gaynor organises many groups including the art and walking groups, who enjoy many outings together.

immy is a frequent participant at the SCS social and recreational groups at the Hunters Hill Community Hub. To show his appreciation for the service, he returns to the Hub throughout the week to undertake some gardening, assisted by one of the support officers.

He is a familiar face to all at the Hub and he shares refreshments and jovial chats whenever he’s around.

volunteers and staff worked together on the Community Hub gardens, Jimmy was one of the keenest volunteer gardeners.

“That’s what this gardening is about,” Jimmy says. “It’s about giving and contributing to this place because I love social groups so much.”

Despite suffering a brain tumour when he was eight years old, Jimmy hasn’t let his disabilities hold him back.

He is an excellent gardener and has the pink azaleas at the front of the Hub blooming. Jimmy has gained great gardening experience as, prior to COVID-19 when the horticulturists,

Supporting our local arts community

Australia is home to such a wonderful and vibrant art, culture and entertainment scene.

The arts and entertainment sectors have been amongst the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. With venues, galleries and theatres closed and festivals deferred, usually vibrant cultural activities across Australia and here in our own community have been cancelled or deferred.

For an industry that relies on getting people through the doors to see incredible talent, it has been a very difficult twelve months. These are issues I have been raising in the federal parliament and I am also a member of the parliamentary committee conducting an inquiry into how we can support the arts emerge once we get through the pandemic.

There are already green shoots as the worst impacts of the pandemic start to recede.

Like Malcom returning to take back his birthright from Macbeth, the arts community in our area is returning with a myriad of productions and activities. I hope residents will take advantage of these opportunities with gusto and show their support for our local artists and performers.

We have a rich variety here on the North Shore so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to cross the Bridge to enjoy the arts! Theatre companies like Lane Cove, Hunters Hill, the Ensemble and Willoughby have a great line up of shows for 2021. We have wonderful galleries like Gallery Lane Cove on Longueville Road or the Royal Arts Society in Lavender Bay which stages some amazing exhibitions. There are too many musical groups to mention but their work is outstanding â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so try a local concert. For some cultural heritage, check out historic Carisbrook House, run by the Lane Cove Historical Society.

By supporting a local arts organisation you are also often supporting local artists and performers as well.

There are lots of options to explore!

Lunar New Year

In February many local residents will be celebrating the start of a new Lunar New Year and the Year of the Ox. Its an important time for many families and hopefully there will be some (COVID safe) community activities that can continue.

2021 is the Year of the Ox. While this is a difficult time for many given current restrictions, I wish the community a prosperous and healthy Lunar New Year!

A sustainable and thriving year ahead We have commenced the roll out of electric vehicles in our Council fleet - community members may have noticed the cars adorned with bright and colourful artwork and our Hunters Hill branding on our local roads.

As the old fleet ages out, we are replacing Council vehicles with electric options.

It is one of the ways that we are working to lower the financial and environmental impact of the Council fleet and plant.

It is also an example of our commitment to be a sustainable and thriving organisation – not just in the environmental sense, but in all facets

of how we work for and with our community.

Council will also be busy finalising, by June this year, Plans of Management for many of our reserves.

We thank those community members who and have already taken up opportunities to have a say in what are the important attributes to be maintained and new elements to be included in our parks and reserves, and look forward to inviting further feedback as plans progress.

We also welcome contributions on a draft Hunters Hill Housing Strategy, on public exhibition until the end of February.
