FROM THE EDITOR

Christmas morning our guinea pigs went on an “adventure”. At least that’s what we told our kids, Nathan (8) and James (4).

Reality was, in all the chaos of Christmas Eve, I forgot to shut the cage door. It was me. I admit it.

Part of me suspects my subconscious mind may have taken over and got its way, given just how much I disliked cleaning up after them (and how unrewarding they were as pets). There was no trace of the little blighters, but the next day, at the local park, there were Council signs indicating fox baiting in the area.

I’m surprised how many people are astonished to hear there are hungry foxes prowling our suburban gardens at night. I saw one dart in front of our car a few weeks back. Turns out the drought has been pushing them into new areas to seek out scraps and small creatures.

The foxes have featured more in our thoughts since we bought our Labrador (13 weeks) a couple of weeks back. Do you leave the doggy door unlocked at night or not?

Someone said we should be more worried about intruders using the door than an opportunistic fox. But I reckon the ratio of night prowling fox to night prowling burglar leans in favour of the fox.

By a long way. It just depends on whether the fox is inclined, or brave enough to step foot in our house…

Anyway, it’s one of many doggy-related questions I’ve been typing into Google since my family came to own our first dog (she’s called Lois – you’ll no doubt hear a lot more about her). It’s like having a baby all over again – everyone’s got an opinion on the dos and don’ts of parent/doghood.

Instead of Googling, I’d rather have a chat with a Labrador lover.

If any of you own one, or have owned one and have some advice I can't live without, get in touch. I’m all ears and guess what? I’m already learning. For example, I’m trying not to leave the doors open now...

DESTINATION BARANGAROO A “fait accompli” for the F3 ferry service?

Lane Cove Council has called the proposed changes to the ferry services operating on the F3 Parramatta River route a “downgrade of service to residents”, while some 200 Hunters Hill residents have pushed for its Council to unanimously reject the proposals.

WOOLWICH BATHS UPGRADED Tucked away in a peaceful section of Hunters Hill along the Lane Cove River, Woolwich Baths is a spot enjoyed by dedicated swimmers and young paddlers alike.

Hunter’s Hill Council has been working to make the tidal baths even more user-friendly with infrastructure upgrades well under way. Shark net maintenance is complete, with work on pontoons, piers, handrails, decking and the sea wall scheduled for completion by the end of March.

Council also resolved in late 2019 to refer Woolwich Baths to its Property Advisory Committee with a view to develop a parking scheme for the site and investigate improvements to accessibility.

The Committee has also been asked to develop a business case for the licencing of the baths to a food and beverage provider; plans for the upgrade of built structures to accommodate a retail tenant; a plan to better manage overgrown foliage and trees on the site and, explore the provision of new sunbeds and shaded areas south of the beached area.

Mayor Mark Bennett says, “We want to enhance the potential of this special spot and make it as accessible as possible to our community.”

Transdev, operator of Sydney Ferries, issued a consultation on changes to the route in January whereby all F3 ferries will terminate at Barangaroo instead of Circular Quay. It has mooted Balmain East as a potential interchange for those wishing to travel on to Circular Quay.

Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer addressed a Council meeting in late February, stating, “The existing connection to Circular Quay is important in many ways: for easy public transport connections, for evening access to the Opera House, for simple interchange to the airport train line for travelers and so on. The proposals therefore represent a net downgrade of service to residents and are not supported.”

Greenwich local Dr Liz Gill, who convened a meeting of concerned residents in her area, adds, "Circular Quay is an interchange and at this stage Barangaroo is not, so to shift the arrival and departure point for ferries is a nonsense and will create a significant disadvantage for older people, people with disabilities and students who need to interchange."

Trandev has been criticised for failures in the consultation process, which closed mid-February. The proposals appeared to be communicated as a “fait accompli”, while residents only became aware of the consultation at the last minute. Requests to extend the consultation process were unsuccessful and the online interface provided by Transdev was criticised for being too hard to navigate. Several people noted they were unable to upload submissions.

Changes to the ferries will occur after feedback to the consultation participants in the second half of this year.

GIMME SHELTER: GIVING HOMES TO FIREAFFECTED WILDLIFE The Nature Conservation Council is $25,000 away from its $100,000 target to raise funds to build shelters for fire-affected wildlife.

The recent bushfires across NSW have devastated millions of hectares of bushland, with over 800 million animals estimated to have died. Not only have these fires been more extensive than ever, they have also burned much hotter. This means many of the affected ecosystems will take much longer to recover, if they can recover at all.

There is an urgent need to provide shelter for the thousands of animals that survived the fires. Lots of small tree-dwelling mammals, including sugar gliders, possums and bats, rely on tree hollows for shelter and as places to rear their young. Without these hollows, many animals fall prey to feral animals such as cats and foxes.

Hollows form in the rotten trunks and branches of very old trees, with the first steps for hollow-formation usually taking over 100 years. This means hollow-bearing trees are a valuable resource that can’t be replaced quickly.

Unfortunately, the recent fires have been so severe many hollow-bearing trees have been lost, which has created an

urgent need to provide animals alternative homes in the shorter- and longer-term.

The Nature Conservation Council is a team of passionate campaigners and on-ground workers who strive to be a voice for nature across the NSW. With this campaign they hope to place nest boxes of various sizes in northern NSW to provide emergency shelter for hundreds of animals affected by the recent Emma fires. WHAT IS THE NEXT OF KIN PROGRAM? The Next of Kin Program helps people living alone to have the contact details of their nominated person recorded at a local police station. The contact details of the Next of Kin, as well as the nominated doctor, dentist and any medical alerts that would help in an emergency situation will be entered onto a register.

Any information provided will be securely stored and only accessed by NSW Police. This information may assist the ambulance and police in an emergency situation to contact a relative or other nominated person. Contact your local police station and ask to speak with the Crime Prevention Officer about the program and application process.

It is a free of charge service.

GAI HARRIS AWARDED HH CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Gai Harris has been named Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year for her many years of dedicated volunteering at IRT Woolwich Aged Care Centre.

Gai was congratulated at a gathering at IRT in February with IRT Group CEO Patrick Reid in attendance, along with resident Allan Waugh who nominated Gai for the award with his daughters.

Hunters Hill Young Citizen of the Year singer and musician Jordan Richards attended the celebration and performed “I am Australian” and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” to much delight of the residents.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR SYDNEY’S NORTH SIDE For people struggling with their mental wellbeing, Lifeline has started a new service, funded by the Sydney North Primary Health Network, called Way2Wellness. It connects people on Sydney’s north side with mental wellbeing support.

The new hotline is 1300 120 446 and is available to people living, working or attending school in the Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Mosman, North Sydney, Northern Beaches, Lane Cove, Ryde, Willoughby, or Ku-ring-gai Local Government Area.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR COMMONWEALTH YOUTH COUNCIL Nominations are open for nine youth leaders to represent the Commonwealth’s 1.4 billion young people on the Commonwealth Youth Council.

The candidates will serve from 2020 to 2022 and must have at least three years of experience working with a national youth council or a registered youth-led organisation.

“Its representatives combine ambition with action, and enable the needs and expectations of youth in our member countries to be heard,” says Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.

Commonwealth citizens, aged 15-27, are eligible to submit nominations by 20 March 2020.

Set up in 2013, the council has emerged as one of the world’s most diverse youth-led bodies. It aims to advance the youth development agenda and enhance young people’s participation at all levels.

IT NEVER RAINS…

BY LIZ FOSTER The water-cooler buzz at enduring Aussie icon, the Bunnings sausage sizzle, took on a new edge last month. Tradies and civilians united as one to play the great national sport of Competitive Calamities.

‘You got access to your street?’

‘Yeah, but there’s a waterfall in the bedroom.’

[Trolley = new garbage bin] ‘That’s a bugger! My parents lost their garage roof!’

[Trolley = shovel, gloves] ‘No kidding! Our cubby house was crushed by a giant gum tree.

Flat as a pancake. Lucky the kids weren’t in it.’

[Trolley = saw, wheelbarrow] ‘Crikey! Well we’re still without power. We’ve only just restocked our freezer from the last power cut.’ [Trolley = esky] ‘I know, right! Our pool turned brown and filled the whole backyard, it came right to our back door.’ [ Trolley = broom, mop] My own visit the day after the storm was in step with every other north shore resident. It took half an hour to park, and only then at the supercentre next door.

Inside the store it was chaos. The poor Meet & Greet guy had his work cut out as he was peppered with questions about which aisle for plastic sheeting (floor, not table), and did this tarp by the door come with ties?

If it wasn’t tradies buying materials to fix things, it was hapless novices like me stocking up on cleaning stuff and torches (the iPhone light didn’t shine far enough into the roof cavity).

Back home, our builder popped in to admire the new water feature in the living room. (We were the last cab off the rank in his fun filled day of increasingly novel water features).

Our own flow had brought down part of the ceiling, so the garbage bin sat underneath, ringed by buckets with soggy towels plugging the gaps. Luckily we had plenty of buckets on hand, in use only days before collecting shower water for the garden. (Warragamba’s up over 71%, but beware, water restrictions haven’t lifted yet.)

Still, we must look on the bright side. My husband’s hoarding habit has finally paid dividends. The ceiling’s now braced by an old handrail (circa 2002) and that extra piece of downpipe he just knew would come in handy one day has finally come in handy.

It’s amazing how quickly you get used to it. We might actually keep it, there’s only the minor inconvenience of moving the bin if you want to watch TV. And it gives us a cracking story for the next sausage sizzle.

Augusta Hope has always been different: different from her twin, Julia, her parents, the other kids at school. She is fascinated by words: she reads the dictionary, scours the globe for new places to learn about and has a thirst for languages.

While the rest of her family are content with suburban Hedley Green - its safe, predictable routine and the little it has to offer - Augusta longs to escape, to travel, to write. Julia is blonde, beautiful and obedient – quite literally the golden child.

Augusta is dark-haired, awkward and rebellious. It is inevitable that Julia will be the favoured twin with their conventional parents who struggle to understand Augusta’s restlessness and her intellectual curiosity. But Julia and Augusta are still very close; Julia is the calm to Augusta’s storm, her opposite in every way, and, for the first half of the novel her “other half”.

Although Augusta loves her twin, Julia, she knows her real life resides outside the stultifying world in which she was raised. At the age of seven she fixates on Burundi, a landlocked country in Africa, fascinated by the onomatopoeic sound of the place and by its huge lake and fascinating wildlife. But Burundi is a troubled place, beset by years of civil war and unspeakable violence. While Augusta dreams about the magic of Burundi, Parfait Nduwimana, living there with his family, faces incredible loss, suffering and hardship. He struggles bravely, trying to keep his diminishing family together in a lawless country drowning in bloodshed. Eventually, he undertakes a monumental journey with his brother, Zion, to start a new life in Spain. When Augusta’s family take an uncharacteristic holiday is Spain, their two stories begin to converge and their lives are changed forever.

The narrative alternates between the two central characters, Augusta and Parfait, slipping between their two worlds as their lives are brought closer by their stories and the hand of fate.

There is a level of predictability about the plot – we all know where it’s going but the joy of the journey is undimmed by the inevitability of the outcome. Although the recent market seems flooded with quirky, bookish female protagonists, I enjoyed Augusta Hope. She is a likeable and imperfect heroine – honest with herself and uncompromising in her direction. I found her insightful views on relationships, family and love to be aptly expressed, both entertaining and poignant.

The Other Half of Augusta Hope addresses universal themes like belonging, loss and grief against a range of beautifully drawn, contrasting backdrops in suburban England, wild Burundi and coastal Spain. Parfait’s horrific experience of civil war sharply contrasts against the Hope family’s safe, suburban life and Spain’s intense, dramatic beauty provides a perfect middle ground for the two central characters to meet. This is a joyful novel for despite the challenges of family relationships, and the inevitable loss of loved ones, there is hope for new love and new connections and for a real sense of belonging in finding your “other half”

How long have you worked in dentistry?

Can you tell us one surprising thing about yourself?

16 years. I gained a Masters through the prestigious King's College London in Aesthetic Dentistry, a Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry and a Fellowship by primary and secondary examination for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons!

I am allergic to dogs but I have a dog! He is a Pug x Caviller and his name is Milo, I take antihistamines every day, but it’s worth it!

What was it about dentistry that attracted you to the profession?

I find it an honourable occupation where you can make a positive influence on the health of someone.

Dentistry is a marriage of science and art. I love using my hands to create beautiful healthy smiles!

What motivates you in your career?

Seeing the change in people’s lives. I've had patients where improving their smile changes their appearance and the way the world perceives them.

One patient said she felt that people weren't judging her as much; that people were giving her more respect as an educated professional. On a personal level, my grandparents and parents worked tirelessly, making great sacrifices to give us opportunities. It would be disrespectful to them if I didn't reach my full potential.

Do you have a mantra for your life, or a code by which you live by?

There is no finish line, so love the journey. Or, attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

What does the word “community” mean to you?

Community is more than just a group of people living in a particular area. It means being an active and supportive part of the community. We have a fondness of the arts and are proud sponsors of the wonderful Hunters Hill Art Exhibition and Hunters Hill Theatre.

When did you open your HH surgery?

I opened the HH practice in 2013 with my beautiful wife Lucy. Prior to that I worked as an associate dentist for 10 years in private practices. So here I am, a research driven, surgically trained cosmetic dentist doing the job I love.

What drew you to HH?

I've always lived in the area and knew I wanted to work in this area. I love the rich history of Hunters Hill.

Tell us a bit about your family and background…

I was born in Wagga Wagga, Australia. My dad is a chef and my mum is a waitress; they ran the local Chinese restaurant in town. We came to Sydney to start school and we grew up from humble beginnings.

My dad always said to me that if you put your mind to something and work hard that you can do anything especially in the luckiest country in the world – Australia.

What the Persian Poet Rumi taught me in 40 days Eda Utku is a Turkish-American Lane Cove-based writer.

A clash of cultures at Christmas prompted her to seek out ways we can build connections in the world around us.

She enlisted the help of Persian poet and mystic, Rumi, to inspire her.

F

or the past eight years I have been celebrating this wonderful thing called Christmas with my Australian family. As a Turkish Muslim, I didn’t grow up with the traditional Christian celebration, or within a family culture of giving and receiving presents.

As such, it took me a long time to embrace this new tradition.

WHERE DOES CHRISTMAS AND THE TURKISH CULTURE INTERSECT?

How did I integrate Persian poet and mystic Rumi into traditional Christmas? Well, by starting a huge, foolish project, of course.

Traditionally, Turkey’s been an ethnic mosaic that’s housed people of different cultures and beliefs for thousands of years. It was an inclusive, accepting and hospitable society for people of all ethnicities where people were free to practice their ancestral beliefs. I believe this history of harmony is what makes Turkey and the Turkish character so remarkable.

this is also mine and my partner’s anniversary and close to the Christian Christmas celebration.

Out of those 40 quotes I selected, this really struck a chord with me:

Rumi, a Persian poet and a mystic, whose tomb is in Konya, Turkey, shows how a bridge between two cultures can be built.

“Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.”

Inspired by his writing, I set about a project over the festive period called “40 Days of Rumi,” taking a quote each day from his work to inspire my behaviour and thinking over the holiday season, perhaps like a Christian might with the Bible.

The holiest day of his life is known as his “wedding day” on December 17th. This is when he was unified in death with his creator. Coincidentally,

I counted back 40 days from Christmas and published a Rumi quote and how it inspired me on my social media channels. I admit, I was doing it for the likes. I had no idea that by the time it had finished, I’d have a deeper understanding of myself, my compulsions, and that I would alter my entire thinking about my approach to social media.

THE IMPACT OF OVERSEAS ASSETS ON YOUR WILL Whilst it’s common to hold assets overseas as well as in Australia, you may not have considered what happens to those overseas assets when you die. Does your Australian will cover them? Do you need a separate will in each country? There are a couple of options available if you have assets in different countries.

An international will – A will can be made in accordance with the Convention Providing a Uniform Law on the Form of an International Will 1973. Countries that are parties to the Convention will recognise a will that meets the requirements of the Convention. The appropriateness of an international will depends on where the assets are located and whether that country has adopted the Convention.

2. There may be tax savings as well as reduced court fees where a particular jurisdiction is dealing only with property within the jurisdiction rather than with the total assets of your estate.

Past Plague & Pandemics Coronovirus 2019-nCoV is the latest infectious disease causing concern. The WHO have declared a global emergency, but it is yet to become a 'pandemic'. 2019nCoV is a 'zoonosis', a disease originating with transmission between animals and humans — zoon (animal) nosos (illness).

oonoses can be fungal, parasitic, viral or bacterial, and cause hundreds of infectious diseases. For example, Australia has known bird flu, bovine tuberculosis, dengue fever, giardiasis, tick encephalitis, hepatitis E, hydatid disease, Leptospirosis, listeria infection, salmonellosis, e-coli. Lyme disease and rabies are nonexistent in Australia; bovine tuberculosis was eradicated in 1997; bird flu is constrained to poultry populations and anthrax restricted to the 'Anthrax belt' along western NSW and north-western Victoria. Ebola and the deadly nipah viruses are not found in bat populations here.

Australia has the 'unilocular' hydatid tapeworm that causes cystic hydatid disease involving cysts on the liver and lungs of livestock and humans and is transmitted by dogs. A serious disease, in humans it requires life-saving surgery. 'Multilocular' tapeworms, which cause aggressive hydatid disease, are not found here.

In the 1950s, I remember fenced off squares in paddocks with a government sign, "Hydatid Testing Station." I remember my mother warning me to stay away from them. Perhaps it also explained why she, and the rest of her generation, cooked the hell out of a leg of lamb for fear that any pink in meat could contain the dreaded hydatid tapeworm.

Our hearts go out to the people in Hubei Province because we see the tragedy unfolding on the News and in personal posts. Sympathy for the passengers on the Diamond Princess mixes with horror. I am not a medical doctor, so my proportion of fear to knowledge is as emotional as every other global citizen. I am not sure if a look back in history will help, but here goes: When the Ticonderoga arrived in Port Phillip Bay in 1852 it had Typhus (bacterial zoonotic) aboard. Two hundred of the eight hundred Scottish emigrants were dead and the emaciated survivors were quarantined on the shores of what became known as Ticonderoga Bay—the Christmas Island of the day.

Newspapers called the Ticonderoga and others like her a 'plague' ship. The word 'plague' has become synonymous with 'epidemic', yet it has a specific application—it is an infection caused by zoonotic bacterium Yersinia pestis, which causes the Bubonic plague, septicemic plague and the pneumonic plague. Flea bites cause bubonic and septicemic plague, the fleas being infected by bacteria-carrying rats. These three plagues are now controlled with antibiotics, but they have a long history.

Pandemic plague is hypothesized as a cause of the sudden 'Neolithic Decline' because Yersinia pestis has been detected in human remains found in a 5000-year-old tomb in Sweden. Up until then, populations had been domesticating livestock and inventing farming, cities, and the wheel, which morphed into trading networks—all the elements required for a zoonotic pandemic.

In 541, rats and fleas came with Egyptian wheat to the Eastern Mediterranean where 40% of the Constantinople's population died in the first recorded pandemic, the Plague of Justinian. It stuck around for 200 years and killed 26% of the region's population.

Between 1346 and 1353, the second pandemic, the 'Black Death' killed over a third of Europeans.

Recurrences in the 1600s brought us the plague doctor with his mask. Without knowledge of bacterium and viruses, this mask was a form of respirator with the long nose packed with aromatics. It covered the eyes and sat under a hood that covered the hair. That mask would be more effective than some of those worn in Wuhan today.

The third pandemic originated in China in 1855. By 1900 it had spread to ports worldwide, arriving in Darling Harbour in January and spreading to the Rocks, Glebe, Surry Hills and Leichhardt. By 1925 there had been 1,371 cases and 535 deaths in Australia.

Zoonotic viruses have caused about nine pandemics in the last 300 years, three since 1889: the 2009 swine flu pandemic, infecting up to 395,000 with a death rate of 0.03%; the 1889 Russian flu, whose death rate of 0.15% killed one million; and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic with a death rate of 2%. This last, possibly originating in the USA, was the worst, killing upwards of 100,000,000 people.

Antibiotic drugs have reduced the death rates for zoonotic bacterial disease. Zoonotic viruses however do not respond to antibiotics and worldwide research continually works to develop vaccines and diagnostic techniques to head-off each new strain. For this new Coronovirus 2019nCoV a great many in lab coats are burning the midnight oil. And I, for one, thank them and wish them the very best of luck.

Solving Financial Woes and Hardships Maria Good says helping people who are struggling to pay bills is the most satisfying work she’s ever done. Her long career in corporate financial regulation provided her with excellent training for her work as a volunteer financial counselor.

F

inancial counselling helps people identify their problems, presents them with options and the client chooses what course to take. Counsellors also help people with appeals when they are denied public housing or Centrelink benefits. In 12 years’ volunteering her expertise, Maria has helped countless people who have found themselves in reduced circumstances and unable to cope.

“My focus is to advocate for clients, to empower them and educate them,” says Maria whose achievements were recognised last year when she was awarded the Jan Pentland Prize for improving financial or consumer rights of disadvantaged people.

“I think it was my strong advocacy on behalf of clients which was being awarded,” says Maria, who was completely surprised by the honour. “I do go the extra mile when clients have been treated harshly or unfairly.”

And that happens often. One client, the victim of a scammer to the tune of $5,000, was simply being ignored by one of the ‘big four’ banks.

“This client didn’t know what to do; the bank wouldn’t deal with her. She told me she ‘didn’t want to be a bother’. I dealt with the bank instead and found they had sent her problem to the scam team – even though all banks now have customer advocates to handle these matters.

So I took it to the CEO’s office and they reimbursed her account.

“Creditors are much more demanding with clients. But when I am their advocate, creditors call me instead … and they are much more reasonable and polite. An advocate empowers clients because it means they are not being spoken to disrespectfully.”

Maria also empowers her clients by showing them it’s possible to negotiate successfully – including with utilities companies, social housing managers, banks and other creditors. She can also introduce clients to helpful State Government programs such as energy assistance vouchers and Work Development Orders that apply to debts from parking fines or traffic offences.

One of Maria’s clients, a mother of several children came to SCS ‘pantry’ for food and Hunters Hill staff thought she might need Maria’s insights. The woman was renting privately and the property was to be knocked down within months. Maria sought help from the local member for State Government, whose office was extremely helpful.

The result is the client, who had faced the prospect of being homeless, now has access to a secure home for her family. Next, Maria tackled her debts.

“This lady is obviously very frugal and prioritises feeding her children. I suggested she’d benefit from ‘Work Development Orders’, where people with parking or traffic fines can get these paid in return for positive action they’re taking including seeing a financial counsellor or volunteering with the community – the idea is people ‘work off’ debts. We’re about to work on a utilities payment plan, and she can also use Energy Accounts Payment Assistance vouchers which help people undergoing hardship with utilities bills so they can stay connected.”

“Financial counsellors negotiate with creditors. If people are in no position to repay, the debts could be written off or repaid slowly in small interest-free repayments.”

Maria is happiest when clients stop coming to her; it means the education component of her work is succeeding. Unlike many services, financial counsellors don’t want repeat business!

Maria also educates clients about identifying essential versus discretionary spending, and letting them decide what they can change.

Bridget Kennedy After a huge, brave career change 20 years ago, Bridget re-established herself as a Gallery Director and renowned jewellery maker. She is part of the team who runs Sydney’s Edible Garden Trail and has been pivotal in the launch of the Repair Café.

Filled with boundless ideas and energy, she explains why community is so important to her.

20 years ago you undertook a massive career change and moved to Lane Cove.

Can you tell us what you were doing previously and why LC? I had previously worked for many years in IT for the banking sector. Over the years it became harder to remain in the corporate world. Putting on a suit felt like putting on a straitjacket and walking to work from the train felt like I was walking knee high in liquid concrete. I was

earning a lot of money, and it took a lot of courage to change, but my life is richer in so many ways now. I lived in Lane Cove in the mid-80s and when I made my life changing decisions in the late 90s I moved back as I loved the village, community atmosphere and surrounding bushland.

Had you always had an inclination that you wanted to be an artist/craftsperson?

I've always loved making and using my hands to create things, and explore ideas. Even when I was working in the corporate world, I was exhibiting my artworks and getting up early to paint and create, before putting on my suit for the day.

You studied at TAFE when your second child was a young baby. What did you study and how did you manage?

I went back as a mature age student and studied an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design at Enmore Design Centre. I then went on to study a Cert III in Jewellery Trade Manufacturing. In my second year at TAFE, I had my youngest daughter who's now 16. I was able to continue my studies full time due to the incredible support of staff and my Stepdad who used to bring my baby to TAFE so I could breastfeed her and spend time with her. She used to crawl around the grassy area and became a bit of a mascot for the students in the year.

When she was a bit older, I'd drop her off at Childcare at the Ultimo TAFE on the way to work.

You mentioned that the course doesn't exist now do you think we're losing the skills associated with arts and crafts?

Definitely, although I can only speak from my experience here in NSW. As a gallery director, who represents other contemporary jewellery makers, I am particularly aware

of this. There are less and less students competent at even basic jewellery making skills. Although there are a few private schools that are starting up, they don't teach skills to the same depth and intensity that the course at TAFE was able to. I feel very privileged to have been able to study when I did, before massive cuts and increases in course fees resulted in the loss of many courses, including the one I did (which was deemed to be a 'hobby' course). As a member of the Board of the World Crafts Council of Australia, I endeavour to advocate for Australian craft in our society. I'm also on the board of the Australian Design Centre which now runs Sydney Craft Week in October, a fabulous annual event covering exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, and open studios of Craftspeople Sydney-wide.

Tell us what happened after TAFE - how easy was it for you to establish yourself as a creator and designer of jewellery?

Straight after finishing TAFE, I opened a gallery (one of my passions is promoting the work of other contemporary jewellery and object makers). I was very fortunate in that I had a number of art contacts from when I had held a position on the Art Acquisition committee of Macquarie Bank and I was able to secure a gallery in 2008 at the 2 Danks St Arts Complex in Waterloo. It was unfortunate that it opened the month after the GFC in 2008, so I would hear lots of stories of how good it 'used to be'. It still is a challenging environment but I'm still around 12 years later.

You have been very pivotal in the local community, helping to establish the Repair Cafe and Edible Garden Trail - what is it about these projects that motivates you?

I'm passionate about creating and being involved in projects that are a conduit for building community and combatting the effects of climate change. I can't stand waste of precious resources and I love gardening and growing my own food.

Tell us about the shows and events you have coming up…

I'm speaking at the upcoming Lane Cove International Women's day event on March 12th, and am also busily (frantically, now) making for a three-year national travelling show of Australian Contemporary Jewellery Artists that opens March 26th at The Australian Design Centre. I'm also holding a couple of free pop-up jewellery repair cafes at my gallery/workshop in North Sydney.

Tell us something surprising about yourself…

My favourite food is watermelon. I could sit down and eat a whole watermelon in one sitting...and I have!

I also sailed from Tahiti to Chile when I was 14 (but not on my own!)

What does the word "community" mean to you?

It means resilience, caring, sharing with others, saying good morning and smiling to people as you pass them on the street. It means understanding that we are all part of something bigger than our own individual selves, and that 1 + 1 equals an awful lot more than 2.

Setting Sails for a Stronger Community How Hunters Hill Sailing Club developed an inclusive strategy, significantly bolstered its membership and set junior sailors on the path to potential Olympic success.

sk any Sydneysider who has never made it to the HH peninsula to picture HHSC and it’s unlikely they would describe it as “a basic, brick municipal building with a small pontoon and a clutch of boats and dinghies surrounded by metal fencing on a small parcel of well-worn land”. More likely they would venture it’s a luxury yacht marina, with a swish Club house designed by a famous architect. But, for those in the know, HHSC has no desire to reimagine itself as an exclusive Sydney sailing destination. If truth be told, its ambitions are far loftier.

HHSC was established in 1961 as the HH Junior Sailing Club and moved to its current location on the foreshore in Woolwich in 1971.

Over the years its membership has waxed and waned, but the Club has remained fantastically resilient. Effectively occupying a Council site in a relationship whereby it’s the licensee and not the leaseholder, Council have thankfully protected the Club’s place in the community instead of allowing it to fall prey to the lure of developer dollars.

While the Club has enjoyed significant successes, times of huge membership and community engagement over the years (it boasts no less than five Olympians in its alumni), as well as ongoing commitment from volunteers and members, and a place in the heart of many locals, it was the London Olympics – an event on the other side of the world in 2012 – that charted a new course for HHSC. Since then, it has exploded to life.

Chris Stannage is the current HHSC President and selfproclaimed Chief Enthusiasm Officer. Enthusiasm might just be an understatement – his passion for the Club beams from him. Sat on the Club deck one rainy morning, he looks across the stunning, iconic vista and explains why the London Olympics was monumental.

“The Australian Sailing Team had a very successful Olympics, and off the back of that success there was quite a bit written about the programs that had been put in place at elite level. In one article, there was a fact box about a new junior sailing program called “Tackers”, which sounded like it might suit our kids, then aged 10 and eight. I looked up the location of our nearest Tackers Club – lo and behold it was HHSC, just down the road - who knew?!

“In January 2013, we became a sailing family with the kids in classes run by local sailing legend Jenni Bonnitcha, supported by teenagers and Uni students. Very quickly we had gone from never having thought about sailing for the kids to owning two Optimist dinghies and an inflatable rib to chase them around in!”

The Games, fortuitously, coincided with launch of the NSW Tackers Learn To Sail program, and Yachting NSW (now Australian Sailing) financing a fleet of 10 starter boats, known as Tackers boats, that the Club could pay repay over three years. 14 kids and their families HTTPS://THEVILLAGEOBSERVER.DIGITALEDITIONS.COM.AU MARCH 2020

had worked together managing the 17 -strong Australian Laser 4.7 Team (including both Stannage kids) who attended the World Championship in Gdynia, Poland that year. Don talked about the benefits of running a more systemised Club and recommended a structure that allowed juniors to take advantage of different levels of participation in the course of their membership, and for families to become deeply involved in the life of the Club. The program was called “Structured Learning Methodology” (“SLM”) and at its bones is a strict annual resource plan, a plan for controlled growth, plus continual and consistent learning from the first day at the Club in a TrySailing session, to competing at international level.

signed up. Testament to its success is that roughly nine of those kids and their families are still sailing, most with the Club.

Chris’ varied and fascinating background makes him the perfect candidate for the role of HHSC President. A HH-based Lawyer, Sports Science Grad, former President of Swan Districts Football Club, former Head Coach of UWA Uniswim and a keen fisherman, you’d be forgiven for thinking its saltwater in his veins instead of blood. It was to prove an inspired moment when then President Andrew Curtin asked Chris to get involved with the Optimist dinghy class, alongside another OptiDad, prominent architect Julian Ashton.

“Andrew knew what he was doing – mixing my sports background and bubbling enthusiasm with the patient calm of Jules,” says Chris. “The class really flourished at our Club, with kids then spilling over into the faster boats like Flying 11’s, Lasers and sailboards”.

Chris chats away on the deck, dropping into conversation his favourite quote from Richard Bach’s book ‘Illusions’: “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours.” Its reflective of the philosophy of the Club from early 2013 – here was a community-led Club prepared to throw all limitations into the harbour, although Chris laughs that

By 2017 the Club had gained true momentum and several of the juniors were placing first at Australian championships, and travelling overseas to compete in European and World Championships. This success was recognised when the Club was named “2018 NSW Sailing Club of the Year”. But, for Chris, there was a niggle, despite the overt success. He explains, “membership is such an important thing for community groups, and ours, despite being very active, was flat, if not gradually declining at around the 120 mark. We needed to find a way to engage our Learn to Sail families not as customers of the Club, but as members, without walking away from the Australian Sailing Tackers program.”

In July 2018, Chris met retired West Australian engineer and sailing development theorist Don Elks. They

In December 2018, the Club resolved to adopt the SLM Program and to change the way the Learn To Sail program was run in term time and in holiday camps. Importantly, the role of peer-to-peer learning was refreshed with a deeper curriculum, giving teenage and Uni-aged sailors the chance to teach the younger kids, while also developing their own knowledge within a consistent framework. In return, they log their hours and receive a small fee paid via a XERO app, giving them a taste of essential life management skills in the process.

As a result, HHSC now boasts 249 members (many of which are families) including an astonishing 121 18s-and-unders. When it sent a fleet of Optimist Dinghies to the national championships in Victoria this summer, it was the largest Club in attendance and won an annual trophy typically only won by home state Clubs, as well as having an awesome amount of fun with a travelling group of families totalling some 60 people.

As this article goes to press, three of the HHSC teenagers are competing in the Open World Championships in Melbourne for their respective classes, which double up as selection events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for many countries. Siblings Amelia and Matthew Quinlan are competing in the RSX Sailboard championships, while Sylvie Stannage is competing in the Laser Radial event.

Success however comes in many forms and HHSC sees its outreach work in the community as just as important as collecting championship medals. Chris and the HHSC management committee recently joined forces with HH High School’s incoming Principal Greg Lill, who miraculously found the funds to purchase two RS Quest Boats in order that its Year 7/8 kids could take part in a weekly Learn To Sail program as part of Tuesday afternoon sport. Lill’s vision didn’t stop there and HHSC is now running a weekly ‘Resilience Program’ called “Ready, Set, Sail” for 11 kids who are faced with challenges such as behavioural problems, absenteeism and mental health issues. Learning to sail, for them, is going to be challenging, rewarding and hopefully transformational.

School staff in coming months as we work our way into it. And in Principal Greg, I’ve found my doppelganger, in enthusiasm at least!”.

While swish Club houses aren’t on the agenda, the HHSC site needs a tidy. Its boundaries could benefit from clear demarcation, perhaps with the installation of sandstone boulders, while the ground to the front of the Club – worn by salty harbour water, water restrictions, then rain and the movement of boats – requires a tougher wearing surface. They’re on the to-do list apparently, along with a refresh of the old downstairs tuck shop servers, courtesy of strong support from local Federal MP Trent Zimmerman and the appropriately

named “Stronger Communities Program”. In the meantime, HHSC loves to welcome new members – it’s doors, down there on the foreshore, are open every weekend. Maybe pop in next time you’re passing?

Feel like you’re a mozzie magnet?

It’s true – mosquitoes prefer to bite some people over others.

I

t’s always you, isn’t it? The person busy swatting away buzzing backyard mosquitoes or nursing an arm full of itchy red lumps after a weekend camping trip. You’re not imagining it – mosquitoes really are attracted to some people more than others. Only female mosquitoes bite.

They do it for the nutrition contained in blood, which helps develop their eggs.

Mosquitoes don’t just get blood from people. They’re actually far more likely to get it from biting animals, birds, frogs and reptiles. They even bite earthworms.

But some mosquitoes specifically target people. One of the worst culprits is the Aedes aegypti species, which spreads dengue and yellow fever viruses.

Another that prefers humans are the Anopheles mosquitoes, responsible for spreading the parasites that cause malaria.

Most mosquitoes will get their blood from whatever is around and don’t necessarily care if they’re biting one person or another.

Although it’s our blood they’re after, there is no strong indicator they prefer a particular blood type over another.

Some studies have suggested they prefer people with type O blood but that’s unlikely to be the case for all types of mosquitoes.

Whether we’re picked out of a crowd may come down to heavy breathing and skin smell.

When they need blood, mosquitoes can pick up on the carbon dioxide we exhale. Around the world, carbon dioxide is one of the most common “baits” used to attract and collect mosquitoes. If you’re exhaling greater volumes of carbon dioxide, you’re probably an easier target for mosquitoes.

Those pesky niggles It is common to hear people say to us I have been having pain or stiffness for a while, but they haven’t done anything about it. When their pain or stiffness worsen so it is significantly limiting their ability to do the things they want to do in life; they then come in for treatment. Similarly, people sometimes think their problems aren’t bad enough to seek physiotherapy treatment.

When the mosquito gets closer, she is responding to a range of stimuli.

Perhaps it’s body heat and sweat: exercise that increases body temperature and perspiration can attract mosquitoes.

Perhaps it’s body size: studies indicate pregnant women are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes.

How hairy are you? Mosquitoes may have a tough job finding a path through to your skin if there is an abundance of body hair.

More than anything else, though, it’s about the smell of your skin. Hundreds of chemicals are sweated out or emitted by our body’s bacteria. The cocktail of smells they create will either attract or deter mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes could also have a preference for different parts of the body.

One study showed mosquitoes are more attracted to hands and feet than armpits, but that just turned out to be because of deodorant residues.

Mosquitoes may also be more attracted to our feet: studies have shown cheese sharing similar bacteria to that found between our toes attracts mosquitoes!

It’s not your diet. There is no evidence that what you eat or drink will prevent mosquito bites. Some food or drink may subtly change how many mosquitoes are likely to bite you but it won’t make that much difference.

Eating bananas or drinking beer has been shown to marginally increase the attraction of mosquitoes but the results aren’t enough to suggest any dietary change will reduce your mosquito bites. That’s why our supermarket shelves aren’t full of “mozzie repellent” pills.

Your irresistibility to mosquitoes may not be your fault. Blame your parents. Studies have shown the chemicals responsible for the “skin smell” that attracts mosquitoes has a high level of heritability when twins are exposed to biting mosquitoes.

We have to be careful about generalisations. There are thousands of types of mosquitoes around the world and all will have a different preference for what or who to bite. And the attraction of individuals and the scenario that plays out in one part of the world may be much different in another.

Remember, it only takes one mosquito bite to transmit a pathogen that could make you sick. So whether you’re a mosquito magnet or feeling a little invisible because you’re not bitten so often, don’t be complacent and use insect repellents.

Resilience & Regeneration Green eucalyptus shoots emerging from blackened tree trunks, herald signs of life returning. Red skies have been replaced by blue. Much has been lost, but the miracle of regeneration delights the soul. While times are very tough indeed for those in bushfire, drought and flood affected communities, there remains hope for a fresh start. Lessons will be learned and the regeneration process will contain new wisdom to surpass old models.

Hope is a key tenet of Christianity and an important one for us all. Faith in something beyond ourselves is an important factor leading to resilience and regeneration. Hope sustains us through all manner of trials. Sometimes misplaced, I suspect some hope is better than none at all. Without hope, life resembles a dark tunnel, where we wait and watch for a glimmer to emerge.

Hugh van Cuylenburg researched keys to resilience amongst impoverished children in India. Their joyful attitude starkly contrasted with that of his Aussie students. Hugh proposed the acronym GEM from identifying habits of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness as keys to their wellbeing. The children were immediately and explicitly grateful for basic necessities, cared for each other in an ongoing way and chose to meditate each morning. A summary of his book, The Resilience Project, can be found in the Weekend Australian magazine 23-24 Nov 2019.

Well done to our resilient, local community in the wake of flood and fire damage recently. Empathic offerings of hot showers, power outlets, free refrigeration and a sharing of meals with affected neighbours were frequent.

Alternative venues, (including other churches), were offered to the resilient C3 Church, who didn’t miss a Sunday in the wake of the Lane Cove Public School fire.

Being grateful for what is in front of us, being kind to others and cultivating stillness of being are simple practices. (Try our free meditation group weekly 11.30am on Thursdays). However, they require our intentionality until they become habitual. Resilience and regeneration are some of the prizes. Be a GEM for your own sake and for those around you.

Reinvention... Reimagination...

I love spring – all the green leaves, bright floral colours, and lots of baby birds and animals as a harbinger of the fabulous Sydney summer to come. Admittedly, 2019/2020 has been a very rugged version and one that none of us will want to repeat. I love autumn too as it brings relief from the heat and promises the chance to get a little more cosy, to create warmth in our homes, and spend a bit more time on the tasks we put aside for a rainy day.

T

hese are my favourite seasons and those I think best for travelling. And in the last 6 months they’ve bookended my planning around some hard decisions I’ve had to take regarding the future of Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre.

By now, many readers will know that I have closed our Lane Cove office and moved our staff back to the original Northwood/Longueville site (NOLO). This decision was not taken lightly and I’d like to explain the primary reasons in this month’s column so you share my confidence going forward.

1. The rent – it is no secret that Lane Cove is not a cheap place to rent and while Lane Cove Market Place was affordable in the early days, shelling out $120,000+ per year with more increases in sight has become unsustainable.

2. Staffing issues – my staff have all been travel dream makers for a long time and thus can create wonderful holidays for you. However, as they get older, they seek an enhanced work/life balance with fewer hours. Not unjustifiably! This is hard to manage in tandem with shopping centre opening hours requirements/ holidays/ship inspections/staff training etc.

3. The changing nature of travel – we love our clients, we love to see you and work with you to fulfil your travel objectives. And we will still do that at NOLO. However, we will be better able to focus our efforts and better serve our committed existing and new clientele in a less mainstream location with fewer interruptions. Much of our business is in fact now handled by phone or email reflecting how needs have changed so we’ve downsized our physical footprint.

I’d like to reassure you that Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre has been profitable since our inception in 1992, and continues to be so, despite these uncertain times.

We own our NOLO location, and as an ATAS member, surpass the fiduciary checks necessary to gain that moniker. Trendsetter has always thrived, competently organising all of your air/cruising/touring/rail/hotels/resort stays and continues to received many industry awards and accolades . We operate highly popular Art Tours in conjunction with Pamela Fairburn Art, and since 2015, an immensely successful Golf and Cruise Tour business. Help your edible garden survive heat and drought Writer, activist, and permaculturist, Cat Dorey, has pulled together some of the things the inaugural Sydney Edible Garden Trail garden hosts are doing to keep their gardens alive. The not-for-profit edible garden trail, promoting sustainable urban edible gardens, takes place 21-22 March.

1. K eeping hydrated – start with the soil

suffer leaf burn. Build shade covers to protect them. A basic frame made from bamboo or plant stakes can be effective for holding up shade cloth. I’ve used old fly screens, safety netting from old trampolines, and even old sheets. For smaller plants try cardboard boxes, wicker baskets, or wire baskets covered in cloth.

Make sure you have a good volume of compost in your soil (30–50% depending on the soil quality). This improves soil structure, keeps microbes happy, and helps retain water.

After rain or watering, the top soil often looks wet, but just a few centimetres down it can be bone dry. Always look closer and consider getting a moisture meter – a probe you can stick into the soil to check water content.

If your soil has dried out completely it might become hydrophobic and have trouble rehydrating, especially with sandy soils and potted plants. The water sits on top of the soil instead of properly saturating it, or takes the path of least resistance, running down the inside wall of the pot and straight out the bottom. Submersing pots in a tub of water can really help!

Soak them until the air bubbles are all gone, and drain in an empty tub to save that precious water.

suppressing weeds, mulch stops the soil drying out and can reduce watering by about 50%. Organic mulches like pea, sugarcane, or lucerne, break down slowly and add more organic matter to the soil. A layer of about 3–5cm is fine as you want water to get through. Be aware that some of the finely chopped mulches can create a thick mat that doesn’t let water through, especially after repeatedly drying out.

You might need to add a soil hydrating agent to address hydrophobic soil, but be careful as many commercial ones are synthetic and not biodegradable.

Leaves and grass mowings can be useful free mulches, but these tend to form mats. A mix of the two is better.

Wood chips can work well under fruit trees. For any large, unplanted beds, cover them with cardboard or plastic sheeting to maintain moisture until you’re ready to plant, or plant some green manure as a living mulch to improve the soil.

Remember that unglazed terracotta pots are permeable and, while they stay cooler, lose water faster than glazed pots. Pots can get very hot in the direct sun and bake the soil inside, so if you can’t move them, consider shading or wrapping them in hessian sacks or cardboard. My herb pots are grouped around two large concrete ‘pot ponds’ so those that need more shade can be protected by other larger pots.

In the longer term, think about how you plant your vegetable beds – taller hardier plants can provide shade for others. The cherry tomatoes that self-seeded behind my hardy fennel plants are doing very well compared to those elsewhere in my garden!

4. B uild resistance and apply first aid Make sure plants are getting nutrients regularly to keep them strong and healthy so they are more resistant to, and can recover from,

water loss, heat stress, and sunburn.

Use lots of good compost, worm castings, well-rotted manures, and seaweed emulsions.

Plants grown with seaweed emulsions are more tolerant to drought and revive quicker when treated with seaweed following heat stress.

5. Choose hardy plants There are some edibles that just don’t cope in the heat, and as the changing climate means that Sydney weather will get hotter for longer, we all need to rethink what we can grow, where, and when.

sticking out. They’re filled with water which leaches out slowly into the soil when it’s dry. You can even make them by sticking two terracotta pots together, mouth to mouth, with silicone glue and with one end plugged, or with one pot and a saucer on top.

ECO BAG TREE WATERER: this 25 L permeable bag, from Green Harvest, sits around the trunk of a tree slowly releasing water for up to a month. Great for young fruit trees as they get established!

WATERING SPIKES: a variety of manufacturers make a cone-shaped plastic spike or peg filled with sand or made from a permeable ceramic that lets the water leach out slowly and deeper into the soil.

SELF-WATERING POTS AND BEDS: A whole article could be written on different ways to make these selfwatering or ‘wicking’ devices. The basis of all wicking devices is that you have a water reservoir built within the pot or bed, below the soil and plants, which allows the water to move up through the soil by capillary action. Some designs have an overflow outlet to ensure that the plants don’t drown with too much water. Other designs have the pot or tub sitting above the water reservoir with a synthetic cords or fabric ‘wicks’ hanging from the pot into the reservoir that conducts water up into the soil.

Make way for drought-hardy alternatives in the garden Resilience is the new buzz word in parenting, but perhaps it’s the trend for gardeners too and it’s time for any “delicate flowers” in our gardens to be replaced?

GROW ME INSTEAD OPTIONS Grass – if you want to ditch the lawn, but still after a green groundcover, try planting a native like Myoporum parviflorum, also known as creeping boobialla.

It’s easy to look after, is great at deterring weeds and will take low traffic. It’s grows in most conditions too, including saline soils, making it good for poolside or coastal positions, and is drought tolerant.

Border Plants – Traditional agapanthus have fallen out of favour as they can become weedy. The hybridized varieties are tough, make great cut flowers, and also cope with drought. Other alternatives include the hybrid Dianella’s, which are Australian natives, many of which have beautiful variegated or blue leaf markings.

Traditional Flowers Reworked – if you’re more the flowery type, you don’t have to go without. Check out ‘tropical hydrangeas’ or Ixoras.

They don’t guzzle water like the deciduous ones, but they do have great similar big showy heads of flowers in soft apricot, peach, pink, white and orange tones, and their leaves are glossy and evergreen.

Other terrific plants for today’s flower garden include Salvias, Echinacea, Lavender and Sedums – especially ‘Autumn Joy’, which really is, as the name suggests, a treat throughout March, April and

May, but also has attractive old seed heads throughout winter.

Hedges – Buxus is still one of the hardiest options, but have you considered Alyxia buxifolia, also known as sea box? It is perfect for low hedges, copes with exposed coastal areas, and is native to the Nullarbor Plains and Flinders Ranges, making it incredibly drought tolerant.

Other more colourful alternatives include the New Zealand Mirror Bushes, but not the old weedy one.

Coprosma, as it is known too, has many cultivars which have bright orange, red, and even chocolate coloured leaves, which clip well and are also tolerant of drought and salt. Another brilliant option is Leptospemum laevigatum ‘Foreshore’. It’s an Australian native that looks like a grey leafed buxus ball, only this one gets white tea tree flowers that the bees and birds love.

Trees and Shrubs – Natives are really showing their resilience and an increased focus on them has also resulted in some fantastic

breeding. There are now dwarf forms of native frangipanis, which make a great rounded shrub to about one meter with fragrant, butterscotch coloured blooms, prostrate and dwarf forms of wattles, marvellous midget bottlebrush and stunning grafted gums and grevilleas in all colours, shapes and sizes. Tristania laurina ‘Luscious’ is another terrific tree.

It’s sometimes called the ‘Native Magnolia’ because the beautiful foliage is not unlike evergreen magnolias, but this stunner is much tougher and will cope with dry as well as wet conditions.

Gallery Lane Cove joins Art Month Sydney Festivities Art Month Sydney returns this month for a city-wide showcase of contemporary art.

Galleries and creative spaces, including Gallery Lane Cove, will throw open their doors for the entire month to enliven the city's thriving contemporary art scene.

The festival promises an array of art world talks, artist parties and exhibitions to entice Sydneysiders to experience the world-class galleries on their doorstep.

The 2020 festival boasts a packed program of free exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, studio visits and precinct tours. Art Month Sydney welcomes back its ever-popular Art at Night precinct parties with galleries open after dark, as well as the dynamic Art Talks series comprising panel discussions on the arts and climate change, fashion and art collaborations, plus guidance on buying art for investment.

Gallery Lane Cove has lined up two new exhibitions for the event including ‘No Man’s Land’ which brings together five women artists celebrating their lived experience across a variety of mediums and Digital Materiality - Coded Textiles by Tricia Flanagan. Opening night for both shows is March 4.

Art Month Sydney is a platform for connecting Sydneysiders with the city’s vibrant creative community. This festival is for everyone – from seasoned art collectors and museum-goers to curious locals who may never have previously stepped inside a gallery.

Award-winning pastel artist Greg Hansell will be guest presenter at the March meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society.

Greg has been a full-time artist since 1980 in the traditionalist or realist school of Australian painting. His medium is pastel and he uses a combination of handmade earth pastels and Schmincke pastels. His Earth Pastels are " hand made only from rocks and clays with no commercial pigment, binder or additive used in their manufacture. (Their) Permanence has been tested to the ultimate rating".

He has been a finalist more than 20 times in the Archibald and Wynne prizes and Salon de Refuse, and was awarded a Centenary of Federation medal in 2001 for services to community arts and Windsor Library. Greg was also the 2017 winner of the Lane Cove Art Award.

His images capture the imagination and wonder that one experiences when peeking through an open doorway or window, with each room telling a new story of its history and former inhabitants. The Annual General Meeting of the Society will take place before the artist demonstration.

Firstly, a quick update on some major projects which will be completed in time for Lane Cove Council’s 125th birthday celebrations this year.

The Canopy remains on track for completion in mid-2020. The new carpark is already working well while the supermarket and restaurant fit-outs progress on the level above. Importantly, our new park and playground at street level is beginning to take shape.

Our other major project – a new outdoor pool, grandstand and Youth Centre – is also on target for completion later this year.

But right now, I’m looking forward to enjoying the Autumn Harmony Festival which takes place in Lane Cove during March. It is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our many cultures and to learn more about our own indigenous culture. We also highlight the link between the natural environment and culture. For example, sample spices of India with a link to British tea traditions or explore wild foods and medicines with a bush tucker guru.

The Festival also aims to raise awareness of the benefits of including diversity in our lives. For example, we celebrate International Women’s Day this month. I hope you’ll join me to hear from some inspiring and successful Lane Cove women who will share their personal journeys and tell us about the events and people that have shaped their success. This will be followed by a Q&A panel. Details of all events can be found on Council’s website.

Works began in February to create Cameraygal Park (pictured above) on the corner of Longueville Road and Epping Road featuring Indigenous inspired garden beds, seating and a bicycle fixing station.

The new park is expected to be completed by the end of June 2020.

Mindarie Park: Construction of stages two and three of Mindarie Park are on track for completion

Lane Cove Public School

We live in a wonderful location in Hunters Hill, with a strong sense of community.

As many residents would know a fire caused extensive damage to Lane Cove Public School in January. Fortunately no one was hurt. However, the fire destroyed the school’s canteen and school hall.

Our social support networks are very important, as they protect both our psychological and physical health. From clubs to churches, volunteer and community groups and meeting places - all help to maintain a strong community.

However, we have an emerging issue in our community: social isolation.

It’s now impacting upon very young to very old residents here in Hunters Hill.

Working from home, underemployment, online services and social networks can play a role.

Finding more effective and meaningful ways to connect people face-to-face will be our challenge, if we are to build an even stronger community.

So it is timely that on March 29 the nation celebrates Neighbour Day. The initiative of not-for-profit organisation Relationships Australia encourages people to connect with those who live nearby.

This year’s theme is ‘social connection’ - encouraging Australians to build strong social connections with the people around them, because it can make a difference to the lives of those who may be struggling with isolation or loneliness.

All Australians are urged to reach out to the vulnerable and lonely members of their community to create a connection – whether it’s a few friendly words across the back fence, inviting your elderly neighbour in for a cuppa, organising a community get-together, or stopping for a chat when you’re walking the dog.

Lifeline Shop Gladesville I had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the official opening in February of the Lifeline Shop Gladesville.

I visited the store for the first time on the day the doors opened for trade in November and continue to admire the efforts of the volunteers who work so hard to make Lifeline the great success it is today.

The shop provides an opportunity for locals to support Lifeline’s crisis support and suicide prevention services.

Library Services Excitement is building as we move a step closer to having our own local library space in Hunters Hill.

To help ensure this space is built by the community, for the community, Council has sought community feedback on the kinds of programs you'd like to participate in.

We look forward to announcing more exciting developments about our library services in the near future.

The school’s P&C Association has set up a GoFundMe Page in order to raise money to help the school recover.

So far many locals have made very generous contributions and the school has continued to receive support from the NSW Government to rebuild facilities.

Australia Day 2020 Honours I was delighted to see so many exceptional locals honoured for their contributions to this nation by the Governor-General this Australia Day. I would like to congratulate the Lane Cove and Hunters Hill recipients Ms Catherine Inglis AM, Ms Christine Franks AM, Mr Paul Hackett OAM, Mr Peter Maniscalco OAM, Dr Samiul Sorrenti OAM, Mr Michael Wilson OAM, Mr James SiangChung Yu OAM and Brigadier Peter Connor AM. Lunar New Year Finally I was proud to attend the Lunar New Year Celebrations in Chatswood with fellow Parliamentarians and dignitaries.

It was particularly wonderful to see the celebrations continue despite the challenges and worries that the coronavirus has presented especially for Chinese Australians.

Many local businesses have been affected by the coronavirus, often by completely unfounded fears about its potential risks in Australia.

The key message from health authorities is that there is next to zero risk in Australia so let’s all support our local Chinese restaurants and businesses!

Being senior Last month was “Seniors Month.”

It made me speculate about the term and what we think when we say it.

W

hen I was growing up old people were generally retired, over 60 and the women had permed and blue grey hair. So really old people were considered to be beyond working age and we lumped them all together as “past it”. In fact, as far as fashion was concerned, there were clothes for the young and then at some stage everyone looked the same. If you don’t believe me check out family photos of the 1950s. All the women over 30 had the same hats and coats – functional and not in the least exciting.

The first time anyone used the term teenager was in the 1930s, however it only really began to be generally used in the 1950s. Again we now have a collective view of what a

teenager is and does. Who hasn’t heard a parent complain about their teenage boy or girl and know without any explanation that they are difficult, monosyllabic and rebellious?

In my experience they can also be sensitive, responsible and engaging.

I am now considered to be a senior, being over 55. At my age my mother sent me off to University and then dedicated the rest of her life to supporting all six of her children and grandchildren. Conversely I am still in an active role as a CEO, have no intention of putting my children before my wants or desires (am I a bad mother?) and am planning another ten years in the workforce whilst also planning my next adventure. I’m also learning how to juggle three balls.

So I question the whole term “seniors”. Are we all past it at 55? All the same and have some homogenous view of the world?

Obviously not. So a “Seniors Month” starts to look a little jaded and old fashioned.

I want our activities to be for anyone seeking new challenges and new friendships. There is no rule that over 60s are only allowed to mix with others over 60.

My point is that people are people regardless of age so let’s stop pigeon holding everyone into some artificial age based groups. Enjoy life and interact with people who share your interests, joys and skills regardless of your age.
