As always, there are hundreds of things taking place right on our doorstep that warrant inclusion in TVO and this month is no different: Sydney Community Services and Council have come together to launch the first Dementia Café; Lane Cove Music is celebrating 75 years; Lane Cove Theatre Group is staging four classic plays to celebrate 25 years treading the boards; the new Olympic-sized pool has been tested (no leaks!); LaVoce Choir is on the hunt for new members; and let’s not forget, Lane Cove Public School’s hall and canteen went up in smoke and 800 kids were simultaneously praying for an extension to the summer holidays (sorry, kids).

However, it would have been remiss of us not to mention the bushfires, for this terrible national disaster has been on everyone’s minds.

Publishing an issue of TVO without mentioning it would have been odd, but I’ll admit it was a struggle to land on the best, and most sensitive, way to acknowledge it. All the large media outlets have taken a different approach, focusing on the human stories of loss; the incredible feat of the firefighters undertaken every day (even now); the political reaction and handling of the situation and of course, how the country moves forward.

Wading into any of those areas requires first-hand exposure or a depth of specialist knowledge (we have neither), so instead we have turned our attention to two things. Firstly, the potentially enormous loss of our smallest, but most essential creatures – insects. CSIRO provided us with a balanced article explaining what could be happening in fire-ravaged bushlands. Secondly, I spoke to some Lane Cove locals who turned their sewing and organisational skills into a 500-strong factory of people producing pouches for orphaned kangaroos and wraps for baby bats who have lost their mothers and homes. Sometimes it really is the little things that count.

Back to local events though. This month is Seniors Month/Seniors Festival (I really need some clarification on what the official name is!), so we have focused several articles on issues relating to Seniors and we have included lots of information about the events you can take part in.

The program all comes together under the wonderfully positive theme, “Love Your Life”.

FIRST DEMENTIA CAFÉ OPENS ITS DOORS Sydney Community Services and Lane Cove Council have teamed up to open the village’s first Dementia Café.

A weekly social gathering for people living with dementia, their carers, family and friends, it is held at NiBu Café (Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove) every Tuesday from 10am 12pm, starting from February 18.

The new Lane Cove Olympic Pool hit a major milestone at the end of 2019 with the pool shell filled with water as part of a testing process. Works at the pool were inspected by Lane Cove Mayor, Pam Palmer and federal Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman.

The outdoor pool and grandstand are being completely rebuilt by Lane Cove Council, with the support of the federal government, following urgent closure of the old pool due to major structural issues.

LOVE YOUR LIFE WITH SPECIAL SENIORS MONTH EVENTS Come along this month for some local mind, body and soul boosting events.

Lane Cove and Hunters Hill will be the centre of a fabulous program of events designed to celebrate next February’s Seniors Month, which is themed ‘Love Your Life’.

Taking place at either the Park View Room/Terrace Room in Lane Cove’s Community Hub on Pottery Lane, or Hunters Hill Town Hall, there are already five very special events locked into the diary for local seniors.

To launch Seniors Month the beautiful Park View Room will be the setting for the spectacular ‘Seniors Luncheon’ (Mon 10th Feb 12noon-2pm) where you will be greeted with a glass of bubbles and treated to a delicious threecourse lunch, as well as lucky door prizes. All friends and groups are welcome. This event is priced at $15.

PROBUS SENDS SNACK PACKS TO FIREFIGHTERS

LAVOCE CHOIR – CALLS FOR BUDDING SINGERS

Members of the Lane Cove Combined Probus Club and the Lane Cove Bowling & Recreation Club came together to bundle up more than 150 snack packs for fire fighters during the devastating December fires.

Convoy Missions Australia handled the distribution for fire-fighters on the South Coast. The combined forces will also look to team up on other relief efforts.

After a very successful Carols in the Library concert attended by the Mayor, LaVoce Choir would like to boost its membership and is putting a call out to all local, budding singers.

Lane Cove’s community choir will reassemble for the first time this year on February 4 at 6.15pm at the Living and Learning Centre. No experience is necessary, and people of all abilities are encouraged to take part. No audition is needed – you just need to enjoy singing. Not only is it good fun, but the effects of singing with a group give a marvellous boost to our mental health.

INTERNATIONAL, BEST-SELLING AUTHOR VISITS SYDNEY Hunter’s Hill resident, Maria Cossimmo, will host a visit to Sydney and talk by international best-selling author, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young in 2020.

LANE COVE MUSIC CELEBRATES 75 YEARS Lane Cove Music has devised a spectacular year-long program to celebrate its 75th birthday. The first six months of the year will see three events take place.

Another three will follow in the latter part of this year (stay tuned for more details on that).

March 17: “You Are My Heart’s Delight” with soprano Alison Robertson, tenor/pianist Glenn Amer, and compere Melvyn Morrow. Waltzing in Vienna with Johann Strauss, Franz Lehar, Imre Kalman to the hits of the day from Die Flédermaus, The Gypsy Baron, The Merry Widow, The Land of Smiles and more. All the joy of the Romantic Era. May 5: The Eucalypt Trio: a woodwind chamber ensemble focuses on performing Australian music and supporting new composers.

VOLUNTEERS INVITED TO ASSIST WITH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S EFFORTS Zonta Club of North Sydney Breakfast is hosting a birthing kit assembly day and is on the hunt for new volunteers to join and take part.

By engaging the community, the club assembles several hundred kits to provide a safe childbirth for mothers in developing countries. They are then distributed by The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia which arranges shipment to developing countries through the international aid unit at DFAT. Zonta International is a women’s organisation that promotes women’s issues locally and internationally On a local level, the Zonta Club of North Sydney Breakfast (ZCNSB) comprises a group of women who meet once a month to work on projects, providing much-needed items for women and girls in developing countries.

Through its advocacy programs, ZCNSB supports the NSW coalition, Keeping Women out of Prison, and participates in local advocacy initiatives. ZCNSB is also a member of the North Shore Domestic Violence Network.

The event takes place Saturday, March 7 from 4-7pm. The Zonta venue is at the North Sydney Community Centre, 220 Miller Street (behind the Stanton Library). Volunteer information: please call Linda Bisnette (0423199110).

You’ve gone from master to apprentice in one fell swoop.

Take driving. I’ve been driving for 35 years and put in over 200 hours of teaching time across two children.

You know those annoying people at traffic lights who leave a car’s length between them and the one in front? We should all be doing that. Apparently you have to be able see the front car’s rear wheels. Or so I’m reliably informed, every time I hit a red light. If it means only two cars make the right-hand turn from Epping onto Longueville per light change, well, so be it.

You also should indicate back onto the road even if only giving way in a narrow thoroughfare. Only if you’ve pulled more than a car’s width off, though. I don’t know why the RMS doesn’t provide tape measures along with L plates.

Meanwhile I offer advice which clearly baffles the adolescent.

She nearly dissolved with embarrassment when I sounded the horn in Bunnings carpark. I explained that is what the horn is for, to let someone know you’re there, but embarrassment trumps safety when you’re 16.

To fight fire with fire I’ve researched some road rules which I’m pretty sure no-one, teenage or other, will know.

In NSW you can be fined $165 for splashing people in a bus queue. But non bus-bound passengers are fair game to soak.

You can’t carry flammable goods in your car while crossing train tracks. So, check your route before swapping over your barby gas cannister.

I’m relieved I don’t live in WA where it’s illegal to transport more than 50kg of potatoes in your car, unless you’re a member of the Potato Corporation (I’ll be sure to check membership rates if I ever move there, just to be on the safe side).

In most states, all body parts must stay in the car which means my dog would get repeated fines. No waving goodbye to friends either. And in NSW you can be fined for leaving your car unlocked, that is if you’re more than 3 metres away (refer earlier tape measure suggestion).

At least we don’t live in Denmark, where you must check under your car for children before pulling away. Or Thailand where it’s illegal to drive shirtless. But pants free is okay. Humphrey B Bear could move there tomorrow.

In a few short weeks the last of the family L plates should finally be traded with Ps. I’ll be happy to sacrifice my car and cycle everywhere. Less rules to remember, and no-one in my ear correcting my every move.

When Cyril Conroy, emerging real estate magnate, buys the magnificent, opulent Dutch House he is overjoyed by this symbol of his rags-to-riches success. But his wife is overwhelmed by the house and finds it increasingly impossible to survive there. The acquisition of this mansion with its Delft fireplaces, ballroom and sweeping staircases, marks the end of his marriage and family life. At the opening of the novel, Danny, Patchett’s 8 year old narrator and his big sister Maeve, are already motherless and being raised by the cook and housekeeper while their father focuses on building and managing his real estate empire. They soon meet Andrea, their father’s new “friend” and the wicked stepmother of this modern fairy tale, who wants the house for herself and her own daughters, but not the children who come with the house.

The Dutch House is Ann Patchett’s poignant story of parental neglect and sibling love against a backdrop of a flawed, capitalist 20th century America. It is a dark, modern fairy tale which draws on Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel to tell the story of brother and sister, Danny and Maeve, from childhood to middle age in a narrative which loops back and forth through time. Early in the novel, the children are abandoned by their mother’s incapability and their father’s neglect, then cast out of their home by their selfish, cruel stepmother. The Dutch House explores the impact of the siblings’ emotional and physical abandonment through their lifelong obsession with the Dutch House – the loss of which symbolises the collapse of their childhood’s safety. Danny and Maeve’s early experiences create an unbreakable bond between them which saves them in youth but holds them fast to each other throughout their lives, stunting their relationships with others.

Danny provides the narrative voice which ages deftly and gracefully as he grows first to adult and gradually matures to middle age. Patchett’s Danny is utterly convincing as the intelligent, perceptive but often oblivious younger brother to Maeve – the true hero of the story who is brilliant, resilient, and self-sacrificing. In the absence of caring adults, Maeve – beautiful, capable and 7 years older ¬– takes on the role of Danny’s protector. This sacrifice comes at the expense of her own opportunities and becomes obsessive over time.

This is a beautifully written, poignant story of the unbreakable bond shared by a brother and sister who look after each other when the adults responsible for them let them down through abandonment, neglect and cruelty. Throughout their lives, the siblings regularly return to the Dutch House to observe it and its occupants from outside and reflect on the past together. Patchett’s narrative brilliance is evinced by her complex characterisation and deft management of the shifting narrative perspective over time. As Danny observes: “We look back through the lens of what we know now, so we're not seeing it as the people we were, we're seeing it as the people we are, and that means the past has been radically altered".

You run a business in Hunters Hill. Can you explain in a few words what you do?

You've made Hunters Hill your home - what attracted you to the area?

Flawless You Skin and Laser Clinic provides tailored, bespoke skin and body treatments. We specialise in customised treatment plans, specifically created to suit each client. We tailor everything to the client's skin concerns, budget and lifestyle to achieve the best possible results. I believe that everyone deserves flawless skin.

We fell in love with HH after our first visit. We walked to Garibaldi Square, checked out the local shops and had lunch at the local restaurant. We loved everything about it. Beautiful stone buildings, trees, water and the fantastic local school. Our daughter went to HHPS from K-6 and our son is starting Kindy this month.

How long have you been running Flawless You?

What do you enjoy the most about living in HH?

We celebrate our third birthday this February!

HH is such a unique place. I love that HH is so close to the city, while maintaining a cosy, village feel. I love morning walks to Goat Paddock, Woolwich Dock and Clarkes Point to drink in the Harbour views. A friendly “Morning!” from passers-by always makes me feel so at home.

Have you always been in the business of beauty? If not, what did you do before?

I've got a Degree in Business Management and Professional Accounting and worked as a Financial Controller and Company Accountant. Seven years ago, I decided to study Cosmetic Dermal Science and change my profession; I guess my passion won in the end! I have been dreaming of owning a Beauty Salon since I was 16. After moving to Australia, I experienced issues with my skin and grew frustrated as I sought a solution. This inspired me to start Flawless You.

What does the word "community" mean to you?

It’s all about neighbours, friends, local business and service operators who are there for us when we need love, support and encouragement. Our community is full of people willing to lend a hand and support local events. I am constantly impressed by the generosity and kindness shown by people here.

What is it about beauty therapy that inspires you?

To see real changes in people’s skin and how that makes them feel is my biggest inspiration. Having a satisfied client who tells me that I've changed their life inspires and motivates me to evolve my learning and research of new equipment and technologies.

You were born overseas in an unusual place. Tell us about it...

I was born in Siberia, but we moved to the Kamchatka peninsula when I was two, so PetropavlovskKamchatsky is my hometown. It's a beautiful place, located in the far east of Russia on the Pacific Ocean, north of Japan. It has a beautiful landscape of mountains, lakes, rivers, hot springs and active volcanos. It’s covered by snow for up to nine months each year, so hot springs are a hit all year round as the average temperature is only +18 C during summer and -18C in winter.

Understanding the impact of bushfires on our smallest creatures Originally published on the CSIRO website, this article explains the impact the bushfires are having on our smallest creatures – insects - and how they react to such devastating events.

T

he impacts of bushfires on insects are less visible than the impacts on animals like koalas.

Many of Australia’s insects are not well studied or don’t have scientific names. This means we cannot know the full extent of the bushfire impacts on insects.

ESCAPING AND REPOPULATING Some insect species can fly away from slow moving fire fronts, if they are at the adult, winged stage of their life cycle. Insects such as immature cicadas and Christmas beetles can survive fires buried beneath the ground. However, their adult winged stages occur in summer, which means they can only survive by flying away from the fire.

levels of light. The loss of vegetation in bushfires also alters stream ecology. It does this by reducing humidity and increasing light levels.

Other species can repopulate burnt areas from unburnt areas after the vegetation recovers. The current Australian bushfires fires are so extensive that this may slow the recovery process.

Habitat destruction by bushfires can have flow-on effects due to the interconnectedness of living things. For example, after fires the rapid growth of introduced African grasses in woodlands, wetlands and rainforests can prevent native seedlings becoming established. This reduces habitat and food for native insects and other small animals.

INSECTS AT RISK Bushfires have more devastating impacts on immobile or slowmoving insects. Many insects attach themselves to leaves and will be burnt by fires.

Other insects at risk are those adapted to and dependent upon local vegetation in fire impacted areas.

It is likely that some species, such as beetles with small distributions, have been severely affected by this season’s bushfires because their entire range has been burnt.

The Australian bushfires may have caused extinctions of some insect species. It can take many years to confirm that a species no longer

Locals harness craft power for bushfire affected animals Daniela Gaete-Muller, a Lane Cove resident for three years, started volunteering for Gladesville-based Mini Kitty Rescue in early 2019, providing a transport service for rescue animals.

W

hen the Rescue group launched its Facebook offshoot Animal Rescue Craft Guild (a group that hosts a drop-off hub in Lane Cove run out of the garage of local resident Joni Freeman), Daniela decided to put her sewing skills to good use making, among other items, bat wraps and marsupial pouches.

“We were making between 30 and 60 wraps and pouches each month,” Daniela says. “We would send them to shelters such as the Shoalhaven Bat Clinic. The need was constant and steady.”

Fast-forward to this Summer and the overwhelming number of bushfires meant the Animal Rescue Craft Guild couldn’t have been more in demand.

Amazingly, one member of the group was able to offer her enormous warehouse space in Alexandria and on January 11, 500 people came together to produce thousands upon thousands of items for rescue animals. The pouches and wraps were then distributed to a network of hubs all over Australia.

“We think we created a year’s supply. We’re really proud of the achievement,” says Daniela.

The group will refocus for now on producing items for dog and cat shelters. Obviously it’s hoped that the need won’t arise again, but the Animal Rescue Craft Guild always stays at the ready.

“The need increased 1000-fold,” says Daniela. “Bear in mind one bat, or one baby kangaroo will get through six wraps or pouches per day – they’re like nappies – so you can imagine the enormity of what was required.”

Daniela explains that to meet demand she initially set up sewing bees in her two-bedroom unit. One person attended the first, ten people attended the second and then interest ramped up as more and more people joined the Animal Rescue Craft Guild Facebook group.

Daniela and the group knew that something bigger had to be done.

No tinted perms, but plenty of grey foxes?

In light of Seniors Month/Seniors Festival this February, TVO asked Lane Cove local counsellor and coach Trish Sara to reflect upon her experience of being new to ‘Seniorhood’, and how she observes life for other Seniors in Australia today.

I

think about my 63-year-old self compared to my own mother at the same age and certainly times have changed.

As a teenager I would no sooner have borrowed my mothers clothes than joined the local bowls club. Today I often spend hours looking for a missing item of clothing only to find my daughter has “borrowed” it.

By 63, my mother was sporting a tight grey perm (tinted pink or mauve for special occasions) and a set of dentures that always looked a little too big for her head. I’m grateful every time I brush my teeth.

“By 63, my mother was sporting a tight grey perm” And I certainly wouldn’t have discussed the details of my personal life with my mother! Sometimes I wish my daughter didn’t share quite so much.

My 63-year-old mum didn’t go to a gym (the only gym was at the YMCA) and yet I must admit she was far fitter than I am at her age. She didn’t think it worth the effort to get the car out of the garage to go shopping when it was HTTPS://THEVILLAGEOBSERVER.DIGITALEDITIONS.COM.AU FEBRUARY

only a couple of kilometers away…up a steep hill.

The term ‘Boomer’ wasn’t invented when I was a teenager. At first the term was used affectionately, but I now understand it’s more often used as an insult.

So, when are you considered a Senior in Australia?

According to the NSW government we earn the title at 60 (if we don’t work over twenty hours a week).

I received my Seniors Card shortly after turning that age.

The government-stamped envelope sat forlornly on the kitchen bench for over a week. I knew what it was.

I glared at it balefully every time I walked past it. But eventually, I opened it and slipped the card surreptitiously into my wallet. Oh the shame! But joy of joys I can now go to the movies at cut price and can travel anywhere by train whenever I like for just $2.50.

According to many businesses targeting so called Seniors, we can enter that demographic at just 55. So many retirement villages to choose from and so many handsome men, if you can believe that those handsome grey foxes featured in the ads actually live in those places.

Certainly, there were no such men when I last visited my mother’s retirement village.

And when did we need a Seniors Month/Festival to acknowledge our older citizens?

In many other cultures, older citizens are revered and considered the font of all wisdom. Yet unfortunately, in our Australian culture, ageism is all too commonplace.

“Wisdom comes from seeing the patterns of life repeated over and over” While I have no data to back my belief that ageism particularly exists in the workplace, anecdotally I’ve heard many sobering stories.

I met a man whose brother had been an internationally acclaimed reporter but now drove a taxi due to lack of job opportunities for people “of his age”.

A friend who owned a highly successful pubic relations company is now delivering parcels for Australia Post, after his two biggest clients found a younger, more attractive consultant.

Another experienced journalist friend who left work for several months to care for her elderly parents was told her

job would be held open. When she returned to work, she was offered $25 an hour on a casual basis. A younger reporter now had her full-time job.

But now I’m sounding grumpy and let’s face it no one likes a grumpy Senior.

We Seniors have an enormous amount to be grateful for.

The Depression and World War II cut my mother and father’s education short. Yet I was able to complete a bachelor’s degree in my early sixties.

Relatively few of our generation have had to go to war or to experience the deprivation and loss of family as my parents did during that time.

We are healthier and live many years more than previous generations and have access to services that allow us to stay in our home longer and live independent lives.

If I have a message for younger readers, it’s this: Wisdom is acquired by observing how life is ever changing but in many ways unchanging. Wisdom comes from seeing the patterns of life repeated over and over and learning from this. This is what Seniors have to offer.

Lochie Beh Lochie is President of the Lane Cove Theatre Group that this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. With four shows already planned for the year, Lochie is a busy man indeed.

He talks here about this passion for community and theatre.

Tell us, where does your love for theatre come from?

Feeling like I never fitted in as a teenager in a country town, I discovered the theatre and from that grew a multi-faceted love. There is nothing quite like being on stage, however, other aspects kept my interest - from back stage to the tech side, the theatre’s creative culture to the safe, inclusive community that has existed for thousands of years.

What got you involved with LCTC, and what did you do before becoming President?

I got involved through my husband. He has been involved since the beginning, and I love theatre, so it just seemed to be a natural path to get into LCTC. I was a volunteer, committee member, and now President.

Explain what you do in your role as President...

Researching, exploring, creating, strategic planning, networking and striving for a better future for LCTC

When you took over as President, what were your hopes and aims for the theatre group?

To lead LCTC into a positive future. Community groups of any industry, genre, art or sport are always in dire need of help and assistance from the community. Volunteers, fundraising, grants. Listening to what the community wanted, networking with different groups and providing a safe space for everyone to come and enjoy.

Can you tell us which productions have been your favourites through the years?

Now that would be dangerous! So many and so many amazing experiences with each and every one of the cast members and crew that are part of our shows.

Diplomatic enough?!?! Honestly though, it’s hard to choose as we strive to better ourselves with every show and each time I think, ‘oh how can we top that?’

And then we do!

Next year LCTC is 25 years old - what will you be doing to celebrate?

We have chosen shows that are all classics in their own way! We will be adding in a few events throughout the year…like our FaceBook page to stay tuned to what we have in store.

If you had one wish for the theatre company, what would it be?

Although we have said this before, I still say we need a permanent performance space and home.

We rent our current performance space. While we love being at St Aidans, we have to pack our entire shows up after every single performance. This is done by the volunteers and we fear fatigue, as it is a lot of work. We would be able to do full scale productions and have further experiences for the community to be involved in, from ‘front of house’ to on-stage to technical experience in events. Having this space would allow the community to enjoy a further expansion of activities that could be provided

through the theatre company or other operators who wish to showcase the talent that is in Lane Cove. All of that and a safe, inclusive environment in for the residents of Lane Cove.

What's been your biggest learning as President?

Biggest learning is to slow down! I am so very passionate about the theatre, I tend to have loads of ideas and networking with other groups all happening at once. Thankfully I have an amazing committee. I could not do what I do without them.

As a Lane Cove resident, what can I do to help support you?

Volunteer, support, donate, fundraise. This is for ANY community group. Go to the shows, the concerts, the sporting events, the market stalls. None of what any of us can do is possible without your interest and help. As for LCTC, volunteers are always needed. Just need to be willing to lend a hand with a smile and some muscles.

What does "community" mean to you?

“Community” is Lane Cove. Honestly, this community is astounding with the safe, helpful and smiling residents. Community is about safety and inclusivity.

Community is about getting your hands dirty to help a neighbour. Community is about being a village that is there to look out for one another in times of need.

Small grants to Indonesia: helping villagers to help themselves President of Lane Cove Rotary Club, Stephen Miller and past President Chris Curtis joined four other Rotarians before Christmas to embark on a self-funded fieldtrip to the island of Flores in Indonesia.

The purpose of the trip was to visit villages, small farms and schools to see where donations in the shape of small grants have been spent and to see how best to help in future.

lores is one of our closest neighbours and yet has some of the poorest people in the world. Malnutrition affects 36% of the population and infant mortality and life spans are amongst the worst in Indonesia. An average of 14,500 children under five die each year of diarrhea related diseases. Up to 40% of children do not attend school.

Faced with such depressing statistics, Chris Curtis launched the Lane Cove Rotary Small Grants to Indonesia project a decade ago. The initiative has been supported and cloned by other Rotary Clubs around Australia. The premise is simple: to build a water tank costs about $350 and dramatically changes lives. Without a tank, children often walk many kilometers each day to fetch water, which means they are unable to attend school. With clean water HTTPS://THEVILLAGEOBSERVER.DIGITALEDITIONS.COM.AU FEBRUARY

available, the villagers can easily cook, wash and grow produce. Hygiene improves, disease diminishes and by growing a surplus of produce, income generation is also created. In short, quality of life improves exponentially.

It should be stressed that the communities are never directly given money, only the materials required and the whole community comes together to assist in the construction.

The trip took in many Kelompoks (democratically run local village communities – often run by women) as well as several schools. Some schools lack toilet facilities and many children, particularly girls, don’t come to school if they think they might need a toilet that day. “Toilet blocks are very much a priority in schools for obvious reasons and we are currently financing a number of these for

non-government operation funds itself via other means and so allows 100% of the money donated to be spent on the various projects. The NTA is totally transparent and every project is documented, monitored and inspected.

If a village does not finish a project, it is prevented from applying for further grants until it is.

“This is another thing I really like about the Small Grants Project - not only are they affordable, but we can advise donors of which project they are funding and when the work has been successfully completed,” says Stephen.

Stephen however is investigating how to include schools in fundraising activities. “I really like the simplicity that a school can just hold a mufti day or sell ice blocks one lunchtime and then pay for a much need project at a school in Flores. At the end of last term Stephen did just this by collaboratively linking up with another Lane Cove local, Jacqui Jones who runs a gratefulness program with Year 6 children. “Our Rotary club supported Jacqui by paying for her program to go ahead in Greenwich Public School. Then, as part of her program, I went into the school and presented to Years 5 and 6 about these very near neighbours of ours whose lives are so very different to theirs. The children then sold Super-doopers one lunchtime and raised enough money to provide a project at a school in Flores. Once completed, I will return and show them what their donation has provided. This year I really hope to do something like this, with many more schools in the Lane Cove area.”

Rotary is an international organisation and while clubs primarily focus on supporting their own local communities, they also look beyond, both nationally and internationally, to assist people in need.

“These communities really need someone to assist them.

They live a very meagre existence, yet despite this they are still so grateful and happy with what little they have. I think we can all learn a lot from these people in terms of finding own happiness and life satisfaction,” says Stephen.

Mental health issues affecting seniors For many people, life really does begin at 60. You’ve got more time for the things you’ve always wanted to do.

owever, some things can become a bit harder.

We start losing people close to us. Friends and family may live far away. Our bodies can slow down a bit, and we might have more health issues to worry about. These changes can increase the risk of anxiety, depression and suicide in older people.

FOUR TIPS TO MANAGE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY • Build resilience through reframing unhelpful thoughts. Change the way you think about the situation that has triggered your depression, for example, “I must have done something wrong that my friend didn’t call me back straight away” becomes “My friend didn’t call me back promptly because they were busy with family”.

• Mindfulness. Learn to live in the present moment.

It includes riding the wave of anxiety, and noticing your environment, bodily sensations and breathing.

For example, walk on the beach or in a park and take notice of what you see, hear, smell and touch.

• Stay active. Research shows that people with depression and anxiety who push themselves to move forward with work, leisure or social activities find their moods improve and anxiety decreases.

• Support systems to combat social isolation. A caring, supportive group of people can ease the effects of living with depression or anxiety by providing connections to the outside world and offering fresh perspectives.

Preventing falls in the elderly Uneven pathways can trip a person easily. The lack of handrails on stairs and grab rails in the shower and by the toilet are hazards easy to fix. Sydney Community Services has a handyman service for this.

Bad lighting is an issue for all but especially the visually impaired.

Objects scattered on the floor such as children’s toys, electrical leads and vacuum cleaner tubes are obvious disasters waiting to happen.

About 30 percent of people over 65 have at least one fall a year, 25 percent a serious injury with five percent resulting in a fracture.

When kids fall, they usually bounce a bit and may partially crack a bone, the greenstick fracture. When the elderly fall, many having osteopaenia or osteoporosis, they are prone to a complete fracture of bone often with shattering - ‘compound’ and piercing of bone fragments through the skin and into other surrounding tissues – ‘comminuted.’

OUTSIDE THE HOME

CAUSES OF FALLS INCLUDE: Increased age, increased general frailty, reduced physical function, reduced eyesight, loss of limb strength especially the legs, problems with balance and disturbed gait say from arthritis or stroke. Low mood, the use of sedative drugs and poor footwear.

Care getting in and out of cars. I well remember one husband kept driving albeit slowly whilst his wife was stepping out of the car. Major fracture. I often wondered. There is a particularly nasty link between hip fractures and early death. Public transport on Yee Ha buses is hazardous. Uneven paving, poorly indicated steps and so much more.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

CONDITIONS PREDISPOSING TO FALLS INCLUDE: Heart disease, low blood pressure, stroke, vision problems, diabetes, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Balance disorders such as Vertigo and Meniere’s disease are particularly contributory. There are more.

HAZARDS AT HOME INCLUDE: Wet floors. Many falls occur in the bathroom, bath and shower. Loose mats are trouble waiting to happen.

Well – a reversal of the above! Think about it and do what you can for your loved ones.

Honours List acknowledges local residents Two local residents, Ms Christine Franks from Greenwich and Mr Michael Wilson from Riverview have been recognised in the Australia Day honours list.

Ms Franks received a Member (AM) in the General Division for her service and dedication to social welfare.

Most recently she held the post of Director, Family Planning New South Wales (2014-2016), and has held other senior positions including Director of Australian National Credit Union; CUA Health and Gateway Mutual Bank. Since 2012 she has been President of Women in Aid and Development. From 2010-2017, she was also Chair of Habitat for Humanity Australia, among many other notable achievements.

Ms Franks is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2006 she was awarded for her Outstanding Service to the Aid and Development Sector.

Meanwhile, Mr Michael Wilson was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia General Division) for his service and dedication to community health and diabetes research.

From 1996 to 2000, Mr Wilson worked at global consultancy firm, Accenture, before moving into the role of Strategic Relationships Manager at The Smith Family.

From 2004-2016, he was the Director of the Glycaemic Index Foundation. In 2006 he established the Type 1 Diabetes Islet Transplantation Program and followed this in 2008 by launching the Insulin Pump Program. In 2010, he was responsible for the creation of the Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network.

Finding God in the Ashes ‘Who amongst us has not been affected by the drought and fires? As we continue with our ‘normal’ lives, we are conscious of the deep suffering of others – including our land and it’s unique and precious creatures. Reminders are in the air we breathe, the ash on our cars and all over the media.

Our positive response is key to remaining resilient to all this bad news. Like many Disaster Recovery Chaplains, I find the heroic response of those affected amazing. Far from ‘woe is me’, many are so courageous, looking to the future with hope and determination. Their purpose is clear and they see life with new clarity. It is less clear for those on the margins however, looking helplessly at terrifying images. What do we do?

I love the response of my Physiotherapist! She held a raffle for a free massage raising funds to rehabilitate wildlife. She is offering her talent to specifically help a cause that touches her heart deeply. This response aids her emotional health, that of others who contribute, the wildlife and the winner! Making a constructive, personal investment helps overcome our feelings of helplessness. Donated goods are not needed, but what else can you offer?

And where is God in all of this? How can a loving Creator bear to witness such devastation? I believe God is still there in the midst of the suffering as always, deeply anguished by the losses, and available to those who will reach out to ‘Him’ in any sincere way. This is clearly not the fault of the Creator. We are aware now of the devastating effects of climate change, and our culpability as people who use too many resources.

We need to make changes to our lifestyle, not just blame politicians, God, whoever.

The good news is when we are willing to change, God comes through! Let me know if you want some guidance in doing so.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Celebrating the ongoing success of Repair Café North Sydney GIVING ITEMS, MEMBERS AND VISITORS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE!

T

he Repair Café Sydney North celebrated its fourth birthday in January 2020, although it feels like we’ve been around a lot longer. We thank Lane Cove Council for providing us with the premises to continue our free ‘skill share repair’ to the local community for 2020.

Having just started with a small group of members determined to make our community more resilient and sustainable, we’ve gone from strength to strength! Over the last four years we’ve more than doubled in size, with our average number of visitors per cafe increasing from 22 to 44 and our volunteers growing from nine per café to an average of 20. We also expanded to hold the Repair Café over both levels of the Living and Learning Centre. In our first year, we repaired 473 items, and this last year we repaired an awesome 1560!

One of the highlights of 2019 was our moment of fame on the ABC 7.30 report. We had so much interest, our website crashed a couple of times in the days following, and there were over 900 comments on the Facebook video with people wanting to find out more, how to start up their own, and wishing that there was one in their area. It certainly put us and Lane Cove on the sustainability map.

We’ve repaired umbrellas, broken toasters, clocks, battery operated toys, broken costume jewellery, ceramics, clothing, shoes and more.

We’ve even fixed the bumper bar of a car!

consider the planetary resources (and dollars) it would cost to replace, and bring it along to our next Repair Café to give it a new lease on life and keep it out of landfill. We’re a friendly bunch, and we’d love to see you!

We responded to the interest people showed about taking grass roots action to keep precious resources out of landfill by holding a free information session on how to set up A Repair Cafe, which was well attended. We subsequently had two other groups visit from the Central Coast and Sutherland Shire who want to set up a Repair Café.

Whilst human induced climate change represents one of the greatest threats to human civilisation and other species, it’s still possible to prevent the most catastrophic outcomes of climate change if societies like us take emergency action. We’re passionate about skill sharing, and community building. So, before you chuck it out, don’t despair,

Time to get planning for 2020’s festivities (Is it too soon? Never!)

I

love the “Festive Season”. Christmas, with its carols, the tree, the gifts, the sense of bonhomie with everyone trying to be their best, loving and inclusive.

And then New Year, with the fireworks and a sense that we can start again, making all those resolutions about our health, our fitness, our relationships, and more. I love that glorious collision of summer holidays, end of the school year, Christmas, New Year and that we all need to have everything complete. On the last Friday before Christmas.

For the last few years, I’ve been at home for the Festive Season. For me it’s a time to chill (?) on the balcony, invite friends and family for a wine or two and a barbeque. A time to read. A time to catch a movie or two.

However, many of our clients choose to go away.

Many go to holiday houses in Australia, rented or their own. At Trendsetter, we don’t have any direct relationship with with Airbnb, Stayz Australia, or similar but in some respects, more’s the pity. In the light of the fallout from the tragic bushfires, and the fallout as to who will bear the responsibility of the financial cost – the client or the bed and breakfast host/the motel owner – none of this would be an issue had the buyer bought relatively cheap domestic travel insurance, from us or

elsewhere. Everyone’s a loser now as the responsibility is apportioned.

We do however get to help plan where some of our clients wish to spend their Festive Season and there are many options, for the world is a huge place.

Number one these days is a cruise, distant or close to home. The end of the year is just so busy that the thought of a floating hotel, one unpack and repack, no sandy beach towels to wash or dishes to do appeals to many. And while I got a great deal 20 years ago on a cruise around NZ because an 18 day cruise was just so out there, Christmas and New Year cruises now sell out six months prior.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you for 2020! Buy now or risk putting up with second best.

The number two choice is to fly off somewhere warm for a close-to-home resort holiday. Think Fiji, Bali (which has made an extraordinary comeback and is no longer bargain basement), Noumea, the Cook Islands and our own Queensland islands. Fortunately there is a lot of options and the early birds are already enquiring about Christmas/New Year 2020/2021.

And then there are those for whom the December/January break just wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t leave the heat for the cool climes of Europe. Some love to ski though these days the snow can

be rather unreliable, it has been reported to me. Others just love the opportunity to explore without the crowds, to enjoy the seasonal ambience of the Christmas markets, and to stretch our Aussie dollar further at a time when prices are low season.

Certainly, it may seem early but RIGHT NOW is the time to be planning your end of year break. The return flights will be in range by the time you read this and save for flying on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, flights usually get only more expensive as the year rolls on. Cruises too are already selling well since the cruise lines have their brochures out months and months ahead meaning many simply book onboard to return next year.

Creating a vibrant habitat in your garden Meredith Kirton, horticulturalist and journalist, continues with her monthly TVO column, while on loan from us from the beautiful Eden Gardens.

More and more people are looking at ways to encourage wildlife into urban spaces. This could be by planting to encourage beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, or by planting nectar rich flowers for birds, or by simply putting out water.

To encourage butterflies into the garden, plant as many bright colours like red, yellow and orange as you can, especially easily accessed flowers with loads of nectar like buddleias, pentas, asters, dahlias, coneflowers, penstamen, daisies, salvias, Perovskia and agastache. These are mostly drought tolerant too.

Milkweed (Asclepias) is planted to encourage the Monarch Butterfly.

If you’re thinking of planting of encouraging bees, you can’t go past Angelonia, which native bees find irresistible. Coleus (Solenostemon sp.) and other members of the mint and salvia families like rosemary and thyme are also delicious to pollinators and a favourite of bluebanded bees.

some prickly, dense shrubs so that they feel safe to settle.

Birds need water too, but leaving a stick or rock in any water bowls will ensure they can get out without drowning.

A multi-pronged approach including planting a variety of flowers in colours, planting nectar and pollen rich flowers, and keeping your use of pesticides right down will help create a diverse garden where nature starts creating its own balance.

At the Eden display gardens many of these are planted to help encourage biodiversity, and the results are outstanding. Check it out for inspiration this summer.

Climate Crisis: A Common-Sense Response

fter weeks of smoky skies, crazy temperatures and bushfire devastation, there was cause for much more deliberation than celebration on NYE to end the 20-teens. The reality show of apocalyptic scenes must certainly have dispelled any doubts about a climate crisis, and there should be no doubt that radical action is necessary to adapt urgently and mitigate through all possible means. So, my 2020 resolution is to find the positive angles in many recent articles on a very significant shift in the public mood on need for action at various levels.

Climate Crisis was the front-page heading of the December edition of Architecture Bulletin before the latest dramas and looked at local and global exemplars of carbon-conquering efforts…and…how we can practice active climate action…that needs to happen right now.

Lane Cove lies in the middle of an ‘advantage zone’, and enjoys many benefits such as proximity to jobs and amenities, tree canopy and water, good public transport and walkable public domain (around the village at least) – all often taken for granted.

Architects Declare Australia a Climate Emergency (au. architectsdeclare.com) was initiated in mid-2019, with the aim to see more regenerative design practice and supporting governance, to ‘harness, nurture and build collective will to advance the demand for knowledge and to catalyse it into action’. “In the Greater Sydney Regional Plan and District Plans, we talk about low carbon precincts, encouraging precinctbased initiatives for renewable energy, waste and water management.

The United Nations Environment Program has established that construction contributes close to 40% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, so reducing the need for new buildings or infrastructure by adaptive reuse or recycling is an approach worth more consideration.

Architecture has potential to transform buildings to net zero carbon impacts and even beyond, to collect and redistribute emissions-free energy. Smart design buildings can minimise and reuse energy from solar and wind, collect water (both fresh and recycled), and provide shade and wildlife habitats through landscape vegetation that can also insulate and reduce power needed for mechanical services. With improved ‘placebased’ urban design the reduction of urban heat island effects is possible, improving the quality of shared public spaces that can become more attractive for pedestrian

At the recent IUDC 2019 conference in Hobart Rod Simpson, Environment Commissioner for the Greater Sydney Commission, referred to the ‘emergence of placebased planning as a way of dealing with the complexity of the city.’ Thus a ‘narrative of the rebalancing of the city’ was shown as urgent redress for an increasingly disadvantaged western Sydney suffering from severe climate change impacts among many others.

Essentially, these are formal government policies and so they aim to help council planners to engage with their councillors and community, saying the state government expects us to look at these things. (GSC Commissioner: Rod Simpson)” Across all the state and local agencies responsible for Sydney’s planning and infrastructure, the GSC aims to see more equitable sharing of the tools and resources to achieve the Zero Emissions 2050 target set by the NSW government (but over the past months even this looks inadequate). Confronted with many challenges from a changing climate, we desperately need 2020 vision for more effective high-level governance and collaboration to support local social and environmental action that can evolve from the bottom up.

Site-specific Exhibition

Gallery Lane Cove is to host a new site-specific work by three generations of Chinese Australian artists, who will reflect on Chinese cultural heritage and identity from a female perspective – Daughters of the Dragon. The exhibition, featuring three Chinese Australian artists Tianli Zu, Mimi Tong and Rainbow Chan, was commissioned

by Gallery Lane Cove, with generous support from JQZ. Rainbow Chan will also present a performance art piece related to her site-specific, installation art. This will be followed by a panel discussion about their artworks in the show and how cultural identity informs their creative practice.

Archibald Aitken Johnston – the name behind Lane Cove’s Johnston Crescent During his term of office as Mayor throughout World War Two, Johnston was involved in much of the planning for post-war construction throughout the Municipality.

T

he naming of Johnston Crescent in Lane Cove North reflects the esteem in which Archibald Aitken Johnston was held within the local community. He served a number of terms as a Lane Cove Alderman and Mayor both before, and after the naming of the street. The new street was formed as part of the Tantallon Estate Subdivision, and blocks of land were first advertised for sale in 1924.

Archibald was the sixth of 10 children born to James and Mary Jean Johnston. His parents were both Scottish born, originating from East Lothian. By the time Archibald arrived in 1877 the family were living in London. James worked as an insurance clerk, accountant and paymaster and initially immigrated with his growing family to Victoria.

He was later employed by the NSW Government. He transferred to the Sydney Harbour Trust when it was formed in 1901. Employed as an accountant, he was promoted to paymaster in 1903. It was around this time the family moved to Longueville.

Between 1903 and 1908, the Johnston family lived in the house named Branstock, in Mary Street, Longueville.

Originally located at the corner of Mary and Arabella Streets it has since been demolished and the land subdivided. Archibald was a building contractor and by 1908 he had purchased a site in Lucretia Street where he built a new home for his parents. It was named Woolmet (a later subdivision would change the address to Wilson Lane).

Archibald was elected to Lane Cove Council in May 1912, following a vacancy in Central Ward. He continued to serve on Council until 1931 and was re-elected during the World War Two years, serving between 1939 and 1943. When Mayor Angus Fraser resigned midyear in 1923, Archibald was elected Mayor for the remainder of the year. He was re-elected as Mayor in 1939 and held the position until 1943. During his term of office as Mayor throughout World War Two there was an

Hall in Longueville Road. Archibald was also among the first directors of the hall. The hall provided a much needed meeting place and venue for social events in the local area. In 1997 the hall became the home to the Shinnyoen Australian Buddhist community and continues to be used as its Sydney Temple.

increase in Council’s civil defence projects, and he was involved in much of the planning for post-war construction throughout the Municipality.

Archibald’s career in the building industry continued outside his Council duties. During 1921 his firm was involved with the construction of Lane Cove’s Masonic

One of Archibald’s most memorable duties as Mayor would have been the welcoming of Lady Margaret Davidson to the Municipality, in front of a large crowd gathered to witness the official opening of the Lane Cove War Memorial School of Arts on 1 September 1923. The foundation stone had been laid early in May that year, when Mayor Fraser had welcomed the Governor General and Lady Forster. On this occasion the Governor of NSW, Sir Walter Davidson, was scheduled to officiate at the event but was unable to attend due to illness, so the task was undertaken by his wife, Lady Margaret Davidson.

She was presented with an illuminated address from the Municipality to mark the occasion. The Lane Cove War Memorial School of Arts is now known locally as the Living and Learning Centre and continues to provide a community meeting place for the Municipality.

Archibald Aitken Johnston, known to many as Archie, continued to live in the family home Woolmet after his parent’s death. Archibald died in 1953 and his legacy to the community is remembered in Johnston Crescent, Lane Cove North.

It’s wonderful to know that Lane Cove has opened its heart and provided support to a number of communities affected by drought and bushfires.

Thanks to your donations and those of local businesses, over $60,000 was raised to supply water to Armidale in the Northern Tablelands. The water came from the building of Lane Cove’s new outdoor swimming pool where testing required the pool to be filled – then emptied down the drain. Instead of pulling the plug, more than 500,000 litres were loaded into tankers and trucked north. There it supplied water for the region’s fire-fighting aircraft as well as for local farmers in need. Armidale’s Mayor, Simon Murray, expressed his thanks to Lane Cove Council and the community.

Money was also raised for Cobar and for our sister-city Gunnedah, both severely drought-affected. Donations again came from the local community and Council. For example, Lane Cove Youth Orchestra held a special Christmas concert which raised nearly $4,000. In addition, In The Cove’s founder, Jacky Barker, organised trivia nights at ‘The Alcott’ and raised over $10,000. Overall, more than $26,000 was raised to support these communities during the drought.

Of course, Lane Cove Council has staff who volunteer with their local RFS unit and these volunteers will be supported.

I will also be working with other Metro Mayors on ways in which our Council can assist regional communities impacted by bushfires and help them to re-build. I assure you that Council will continue to build its resilience to changing climatic conditions under existing initiatives, as outlined in our Sustainability Action Plan. Return and Earn in Lane Cove

New bus shelters

You can now recycle bottles, cans and cartons at a new Return and Earn machine located in the Little Street car park (before the boom gates) which opened in December. To use the Return and Earn machine simply insert your empty containers into the chute at the front of the machine.

Containers are then scanned to ensure they are eligible for a refund.

When you’re finished, select your preferred payout method from the options on the screen. Operating hours: Monday to Saturday: 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday: 9:00am - 5:00pm.

The long awaited installation of new bus shelters in Lane Cove will begin in January. The first round of shelters to be upgraded will be along Burns Bay Road and Epping Road. All 70+ bus shelters in Lane Cove will be replaced over the next three months.

Making a difference

Thanks to all residents who donated to Council’s Christmas Drought Fundraiser. Funds raised were sent before Christmas for distribution to people in need in drought-affected towns of Cobar and Gunnedah.

The Dementia Café is a weekly social gathering for people living with dementia, their carers, family and friends held at NiBu Café, 43-45 Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove every Tuesday 10:00am – 12:00pm starting from 18 February. Bookings are not required.

Food and drinks are available at your own expense.

Enjoy a fun summer’s afternoon at the Sunset Artists’ Market at Lane Cove Plaza on Friday 21 February from 5:00pm - 8:00pm, featuring stalls from a range of Sydney artists and artisans.

The Dementia Cafe is a project of Lane Cove Council and Sydney Community Services. Thank you to NiBu Café for providing a welcoming venue.

Finlayson Street Playground: Last month Council began an upgrade of Finlayson Street Playground which includes the installation of a train-inspired play unit, a froggy spinner, and accessible spinner and four swings. Works are scheduled for completion in May.

Waterview Drive: Council was pleased to officially open its newest facility at 2 Waterview Drive on Saturday 7 December.

The facility will be home to a new 1,300m2 childcare centre and a food beverage store. Thanks to Hyecorp Property Group for working with Council on this project.

Christmas and New Year Fires and Drought Our year starts on a solemn note with the devastation caused by fire and drought front of mind for all Australians and many others around the world. It has been a tragedy of a scale that we have not witnessed in Australia before, which has resulted in the loss of lives and a huge long lasting impact on people‘s sense of safety and well-being. Our thoughts are with those whose lives have been changed forever.

Having witnessed how people have responded to these events has made me aware that even in tragedy, there are many good people who step up to help those in desperate need.

Celebrating Our Seniors Australia Day My first official duty for 2020 was the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony held in the Town Hall on Australia Day. It was my honour to present awards to those members of our community who were selected for their outstanding service to the Municipality and present 27 Australian Citizenship Certificates to members of the municipality from over 16 nations who have chosen to call Australia home.

The Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Ms Gay Harris works tirelessly as a volunteer at IRT aged care facility at Woolwich.

Her contributions have facilitated the wellbeing of residents, giving the residents opportunities to learn about and attend activities and encouraging participation so they can be active participants in our community.

The Hunters Hill Young Citizen of the Year Ms Jordyn Richards has made an invaluable contribution over several years in service to the community through the arts, as a talented singer and performer including award wins at many major competitions.

Community Event/Project of the Year was The Hunter’s Hill Historical Society researched and published the booklet “A Brief History of Hunters Hill” this is a wonderful achievement by our Historical Society who ensure that it is freely available to our community.

Have your say There is still time to have your say on two important Plans of Management for our community.

A draft Bushfire Risk Management Plan 2019-2024 identifies bushfire risks and prioritises hazard reduction works. Covering Hunters Hill, Lane Cove, Parramatta and Ryde councils, it aims to reduce the adverse impact of bushfires on life, property and the environment.

The draft Boronia Park Plan of Management is designed to guide the management, use and development of Boronia Park for the next 10 years. Both documents are on public exhibition until February 14. Go to our website www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au for details.

In keeping with us celebrating seniors this month, it is appropriate we recognise the enormous contribution made by older Australians to our local community.

The hard work and sacrifice of those now enjoying their welldeserved retirement has made Australia the wonderful nation we know today.

The federal government supports senior Australians through a range of programs including the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, the Aged Pension, health and emergency services and home care and residential aged care support.

To help seniors understand the wide-ranging government support that is available I have published a Seniors’ Guide that outlines some of the services senior Australians can access. Please feel free to contact my office to request a copy.

Senior Australians deserve to be treated with respect and dignity and the federal government is taking strong action to ensure problems identified by the Aged Care Royal Commission’s Interim Report are addressed.

As a result, the federal government has recently announced a $537 million funding package to respond to the Interim Report in three priority areas. These include $493.3 million for an additional 10,000 home care packages, $25.5 million to improve medication management programs and $10 million for additional dementia training and support for aged care workers.

Anniversaries and Birthdays 90th and 100th birthdays and 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries are significant milestones that should be celebrated.

My office can help organise celebratory messages from the Prime Minister for 90th birthdays and the Queen and the Governor General for 100th birthdays. Celebratory messages can also be organised from the Prime Minister and the Governor-General for 50th wedding anniversaries and the Queen for 60th wedding anniversaries.

W

hat a worrying start to the year with bushfires, storms, hailstones and a worldwide health crisis. And this is just the start, so we all need to keep our heads and make the most of what we can and live our lives to the full, with all the opportunities that come from living in Lane Cove and Hunters Hill.

February is a month where we can celebrate seniors and we are offering plenty of opportunities to try new activities and events. In Lane Cove we have a range of fun things to do including a meditation sound bath, challenging your brain and body to work better together, ”Singalonga Mamma Mia” and an introduction to a Bush Dance Bush Care event at Hunters Hill Town Hall.

Most of them are free, but bookings are essential so make sure you book early and you don’t miss out.

Another major initiative for February is our new Dementia Café. Sydney Community Services and Lane Cove Council have been working together for some time in planning and shaping ways to make our village more dementia friendly. Both organisations have encouraged our staff to become “Dementia Friends” and I encourage you all to visit www. dementiafriendly.org.au and find out how you too can be more aware of the needs of people living with dementia and their carers. We aim to roll out the program gently through the village.

Our first project is setting up a “dementia café”. We were determined that it should be a “normal” café in the village and should aim to be somewhere people living with dementia and their carers can feel confident and comfortable to drop in.

Although there will be a couple of volunteers to help out, to all intents and purposes this is just an everyday café experience but with the staff better informed so they are more aware and understanding.

Café NiBu 43-45 Burns Bay Road (opposite Coles) will be hosting the café every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm. It is a social gathering for people living with dementia, their carers, family and friends. Starting Tuesday February 18. No bookings are required, just turn up and order your drinks and food like you do in any other café.

We are very grateful to NiBu Café for providing such a lovely welcoming venue.
