My seven-year-old son was sat in the back of the car this morning, chatting away about a kid’s TV show he’d been watching: “And the boy said to the girl who was driving, “Hit the gas!” and she said, “What do you mean? This car’s electric! We’re saving the planet!””

“Hit the gas!” is such an evocative phrase. It conjures up getaway cars, classic films, freedom, coming of age and typically, America (no-one in England, where I grew, up ever said, “Hit the petrol!”). Funny to think that in a few years from now, when we transition to electric vehicles, the phrase “hit the gas!” will be a relic of the silver screen.

Embracing change is a fine art. Changing our behaviour means taking cues and inspiration from people of all ages and backgrounds – from the likes of 16-year-old Sylvie Stannage (our ‘profile’ interviewee this month) to 91-year-old activist Cate Turner (who is our main interviewee). Speaking to both filled me with a lot of inspiration and hope for our future.

You’re only ever one conversation away from inspiration and hope in this community. It’s just a hop, skip and jump away. A good starting place might be the Uniting Church’s Intergen meeting on a Wednesday, or the history talks in Lane Cove library, the picnics at Carisbrook House, or the activities right here at Sydney Community Services.

NORTH SYDNEY SENIORS EXPO SHINES AGAIN The North Sydney Senior’s Expo was a resounding success again this year, attended by Sir Peter and Lady Lynne Cosgrove (who are perhaps the area’s newest retirees) who opened the event.

QUIET SSSHOPPING HOUR INITIATIVE ROLLED OUT AT WOOLIES LANE COVE Woolworths Lane Cove is dedicating one hour to low-sensory “quiet shopping” every Tuesday morning.

In his opening address Sir Peter spoke addressed senior Australians as “being one of our most important national treasures” and reflected on “their great wisdom, compassion and energy”.

Sir Peter also acknowledged the enormous contribution that senior Australians make to the country through their commitment to community involvement.

The program is designed to reduce anxiety and sensory stress for customers with specific needs, including autism, by providing a quieter and less stimulating environment in store.

It is thought however, that there are many different types of customers who will enjoy the benefits of a quieter shopping experiences.

Woolies will lower lights, turn down music and radio, and turn off oven buzzers for an hour every Tuesday between 10:30am and 11:30am.

It is one of more than 260 stores nationally, including 87 in NSW and the ACT, who are taking part in the initiative.

Woolworths Lane Cove Store Manager Matt Jones says, “We’ve heard from our customers there is a need in the community for a low sensory shopping experience in the area.

“Off the back of successful trials, we’re delighted to expand Quiet Hour to Woolworths Lane Cove for the benefit of even more customers.

“Our team takes great pride in ensuring the store is quieter and less stressful for customers who want to shop during Quiet Hour and we look forward to welcoming them in store.”

The low sensory initiative was developed in consultation with disability service providers at Life Without Barriers.

Life Without Barriers Chief Executive Claire Robbs adds, “Quiet Hour is a fantastic accessibility initiative by Woolworths that recognises that people have different accessibility needs.

“It gives people a way to do their shopping and increase their independence in an environment that is not stressful and overwhelming to them.”

During Quiet Hour, customers will also notice the following changes: reducing volume on store phones and registers on the trading floor; roll cages will be removed from the shop floor; and no PA announcements (excluding emergencies).

Among the organisations that supported the day were NBN, the ATO, the Department of Human Services as well as community organisations such as the Pink Ladies, Probus, North Sydney Rotary, SES, Lions Clubs, Sydney Community Centre, and the Crows Nest Community Centre.

Trent Zimmerman MP said, “Many of these organisations do truly wonderful work in our area so it was a great opportunity for those who attended to find out how these organisations support our community, how they can get involved and perhaps, most importantly, how to get help if needed.”

LIBRARY BOOKS DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR A first for Australia, Lane Cove Council has launched a service that enables all residents to have library items delivered directly to their door.

The service, operated by Lane Cove Library and ready to go now, is Australia's first online shopping-style public library delivery experience, called Library to Your Door.

For a small fee of $2.50, residents, who for may struggle to get to the library in person, can reserve items and have them delivered within three working days of the item becoming available. A pickup service for any items borrowed from the Library is also available.

THIRD ROUND OF GRANTS OPEN TO LOCAL BOATING INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS Local councils, community groups and industry in the Lane Cove Electorate are eligible to apply for a share of $28 million of funding to improve maritime facilities, as part of the third round of the Boating Now Program.

“This investment is a great opportunity to secure funding for projects that will provide better facilities and amenity for our community,” says Anthony Roberts MP. “Funding can be used to improve maritime access and safety, modernise facilities for a more enjoyable boating experience, and improve community places,” Mr Roberts adds.

The program aims to provide better access to NSW waterways for local and visiting boaters, so they can remain safe and enjoy their time out on the water with ease.

The Boating Now Program funds collaborative projects that support economic and community benefits across the state.

The Program is part of the NSW Maritime Infrastructure Plan 2019 – 2024 that sets out the approach to NSW Government investment in maritime infrastructure to deliver benefits to boaters and communities across the state.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON WARD BOUNDARIES IN LANE COVE

WISDOM IN FOCUS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION Launched at the start of October, Lane Cove Council is running its inaugural Wisdom in Focus exhibition of photographic portraits of local people aged over 55-years-old.

Lane Cove Council is proposing a portion of the West Ward be transferred into the Central Ward.

This is to ensure that there is no more than a 10 per cent variance between the ward with the largest and the smallest number of electors in Lane Cove. The last adjustment by Council took place in 2006.

Entries are currently being displayed at the Library and will remain on show until February 2020 to celebrate NSW Seniors Festival. There will be a People’s Choice Award, which you are encouraged to take part in.

Council is required by the NSW Electoral Commissioner to monitor the number of electors enrolled within each ward.

Entries are still open and anyone considering entering is urged to submit entries before the closing date of Monday 13 January 2020.

The adjustment involves transferring electors from an area generally bounded by Best Street down to 280 Burns Bay Road and transferring those electors from West Ward to Central Ward. No changes are proposed to the East Ward boundaries.

Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to submit photos of people over the age of 55. This is an opportunity for photographers to capture older people’s stories and experiences in a different and special way.

A ward boundaries map, with the proposed adjustment and related documents may also be viewed online or by visiting the Lane Cove Civic Centre (48 Longueville Road, Lane Cove), Lane Cove Library (Library Walk, Lane Cove) or Greenwich Library (48 Greenwich Road, Greenwich).

The number of electors in Lane Cove is increasing, with the highest rate of increase occurring within West Ward, resulting in a variance of electors of 18.9 per cent between West and Central Wards.

HUNTERS HILL YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

You recently won the Hunters Hill Young Citizen of the Year Award. Can you tell us what that was for?

It was for my work, over the past few years, volunteering at Hunters Hill Sailing Club. I love to pass on my passion for sailing to the next wave of sailors! I also love teaching kids how to sail because it’s a sport that caters for everyone, whether those analytical and focused, or those who just want to have fun and go fast!

Can you tell us about your mentoring work and the sailing camps you participate in?

I’m involved in OptiChicks, where female junior sailors in the Optimist class come together for weekends of coaching, making connections and having fun. I attend as a mentor, pass on my knowledge and act an ‘older sister’ to help them out as they progress through their sailing adventure.

How long have you been sailing, and what got you into it? Do you sail particular kinds of boats?

I’ve been sailing for six years in a whole range of boats. My dad was reading the newspaper one day when he spotted an ad for the national learnto-sail program, Tackers. By chance, our local Tackers centre was around the corner - at Hunters Hill Sailing Club! I haven’t looked back, and my brother and I have become immersed in it.

You train for competitions that have placed you 10th in the country? What's involved in that?

I’ve raced around Australia and the world in the Laser Radial Class, which is the single-handed women’s Olympic boat. At the last Open Australian Championships, I placed 10th in the open women’s division, with the 1st placegetter being the Women’s World Champion! I was extremely proud of this result and am looking forward to improving further!

Can you tell us about your sailing aspirations?

My goal is to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, and to continue mentoring and teaching the generation of sailors that follows.

What makes Hunters Hill special to you?

Hunters Hill has given me so many opportunities - it’s a special place for me because we have a true sense of community. For a small area, we have a big heart, and having lived here almost my whole life, I feel that everyone plays their part in sustaining our community.

Tell us about your family....

We’re a very busy family - my parents work full-time as lawyers, and my brother Rohan and I spend every free hour either sailing, or wishing we were sailing. I’m so grateful for the support my family gives me every day.

What does the word "community" mean to you?

Community means working together to celebrate and support each other, taking interest in community events and sharing in the opportunities we are given.

Lest We Forget…

The story of Leslie James Burley (1892-1915), after whom Lane Cove’s Burley Street was named.

There are several local streets named after young men who were killed well before their time during World War I. One of those streets is Burley Street, Lane Cove North, named after Leslie James Burley who spent barely 11 days on the Gallipoli Peninsula in May 1915 before he was shot and died of wounds.

Leslie was born to John Ferguson Burley and Rhoda Maria Lawrence in Freemantle, WA on 10 April 1892. By the time he was at primary school, the family had moved to Sydney and were residing at Glenrock, Magdala Road, North Ryde.

Leslie had a strong interest in the military and his application form said he had served six years in the cadets and had been commissioned as a Lieutenant. Leslie also served as an acting Captain of the 18th Battalion Citizen Military forces stationed at North Sydney.

Burley enlisted on 22 December 1914, with the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 3rd reinforcements. The address listed on Burley’s application for his commission to the Australian Imperial Forces lists Pialba at Charles Street, Greenwich as his home address, where his family were living from circa 1915-16. Burley’s unit sailed from Sydney on the Seang Choon on the 11 February 1915. He arrived on the Gallipoli Peninsula circa 3 May 1915.

According to two of Burley’s letters home, frontline shifts were alternated. They would spend one day fighting in the trenches and the next day they would be digging trenches and/or roads. On the 11 May Burley and 60 of his men were sent up a hillside at night to build a road. The crew completed it in about four hours with only one of the men being ’hit’. After this experience Burley was very impressed with the calibre of his men. After one close encounter in early May Burley noted in one of his letters that ‘I was not made to be killed.’

Burley’s first and only heavy action was on 19 May. According to the official unit diary the Turks carried out a heavy and strong attack that began very early on the morning of the 19 May. By 2.45am the attack had extended across the entire front at Quinns Post and the Turks were attacking in successive lines. The troops were able to fend off the Turks and as the light improved ‘the Turks were compelled to retreat with very heavy loss.’

However, ‘as soon as the enemy commenced to retreat our men exposed themselves along the parapet and it was from this time that our losses were heaviest.’ By the end of the day one officer was dead, two were wounded (this was probably Burley and one other officer), there were 41 others killed and 49 wounded.

According to Sergeant E. N. Litchfield of the 3rd Battalion, Burley had been shot in the stomach. He was evacuated on the 19 May, or early the next day, to the hospital ship Soudan where he died of wounds on the 20 May. Stomach wounds during World War I were often deadly and were rarely treatable. Burley was buried at sea.

Like many young men enlisting in the early years of World War I, Burley saw himself as confident and bullet-proof.

Sadly, and like many thousands of others, this was an illusion that would have been shattered within the first couple of months of combat.

Cate Turner

LANE COVE’S 91 YEAR-OLD ACTIVIST

Cate Turner is remarkable. An immigrant from New Zealand, she established a career in Australia in the late 1950s when women faced multiple inequalities in the workplace. Since retiring from paid employment in 1993, she has enjoyed a busy life, becoming Sydney Lion’s Club first female president and receiving an OAM. 91 years old, there’s no stopping this Lane Cove resident and formidable activist.

I was subsequently promoted to the company’s large plant in Maitland where I stayed for ten years. I came to Sydney in 1970 and was Human Resource State Manager for the company. I had to return to NZ following the serious illness of my mother. When I was finally able to return, I was employed in the Electronics industry in the same role.

When you entered the workforce, you would have been aware of the limitations placed upon women. Did you sense an urge to act then, or did the 'activist' in you come out later in life?

I was brought up as an only girl with four brothers so learned very early in my life that boys received privileges denied to girls. However, I did not become an activist until much older. Mind you, I had many arguments with my brothers and others about the inequalities facing women. And now at 91, I am well aware that many of those same inequalities still exist!

You joined the Women's Electoral Lobby can you give us some examples of your most satisfactory achievements?

I joined the women’s Electoral Lobby in 1992 and became active after my retirement from paid employment in 1993. I was the convenor for one year, but I really feel my most important achievement, apart from running a very successful national conference, was to support the battle for the criminalisation of female genital mutilation.

You are a long-time resident of Lane Cove.

What brought you here?

I had been renting when I was required to move and through a contact in the Older Women’s Network, I found my current accommodation in Lane Cove, a suburb to which I was attracted.

Are there issues you would like the Women's Electoral Lobby to address now?

The Women’s Electoral Lobby is currently doing a fine job addressing issues such as equal pay, domestic violence, homelessness, a women’s right to choose an abortion, women’s refuges and so on. But I would like to see us pay a little more attention to the needs of older women.

Having been retired for 26 years, can you tell us a little about bit about your working life and occupation?

Women still battle inequality.

Can you tell us what you would like to see fixed once and for all?

I came to Australia from New Zealand in 1958 and obtained employment in Melbourne, working in human resource management for a textiles company.

Every human on this planet is born of a woman. I would like to see a substantial increase worldwide in the respect that should be thus paid to all women!

You also joined the Older Women's Network. Can you explain your proudest achievement with this group?

You have made Lane Cove your home, and you are very much part of our community.

Is there anything about it you would change?

I joined the Older Women’s Network in 1994 and have served on their National Council, the NSW State Board and the committee for the Sydney group of the organisation over the many years I have been a member. In those roles we grew the organisation and now have 19 member groups who are autonomous, but affiliate with the State Board. Our objective is to uphold the rights, dignity and well-being of older women and our activities are designed to fulfil that objective.

A remarkable feat, you became the Lion's Club first female president since it started in 1953, and you have been awarded an OAM. How does that make you feel?

I am very proud of my work with the Lions Club of Sydney, culminating in being their first female President for two years and for receiving an OAM for my support of older people in the community, particularly women. For the past 13 years I have organised an annual event for the Sydney Lions Club

I cannot immediately think of anything I would like to change, we have a great Council, a wonderful library and most matters that arise are dealt with adequately.

What does "community" mean to you?

“Community” means good friends and neighbours, including all people in Lane Cove whether resident or not.

Is there anything you would change about contemporary society?

I would like to put the brakes on extreme right-wing conservatism that is raising its head everywhere.

What's the secret to a long and healthy life?

I guess I am naturally interested in the world around me and that means taking part and leading a busy life. And I have to add that I do enjoy a glass of red wine with my evening meal! But I have no secret recipe, I just know that I am lucky. I must mention that I have outlived my four brothers!

Banish “beach ready” and be inspired!

As summer approaches the media – from old-fashioned print mags through to social media - bombards us with articles about how to get ‘beach ready’.

What if we look to the role models in our local community who would rather swap ‘beach-ready’ for ‘beach-happy’ instead? Words by Nicola Riches.

t’s that time of year when we’re ambushed with messages that we need to get our bodies ‘beachready’. Stop at any supermarket check-out and read the cover lines on the magazines: “Lose five kilos in two weeks!”, “Walk six kilos off fast!”, “Get that perfect sunkissed look!”. As the days become hotter, the messages come thicker and faster. Don’t even crank your neck down at your Instagram feed – it’s one massive advert for tanning lotion.

TVO has made a conscious decision to buck the trend, calling on women (and men too, let’s not forget) to shun those cries for us to get ‘beach-ready’ and turn our attention to local female role models who, instead, are dedicated to ‘beach-happy’ and a life well lived.

Take, for example, 50-year old curve model Ljubenka Milunovic, who last year was whisked off to America where demand for models who look like the majority, as opposed minority, of women is on the rise.

Leaving her wider family back in Hunters Hill, she misses the area’s community feel and Sydney’s beach lifestyle, and having spent many a day listening to the waves lapping on the shore, she’s keener than ever for us to ditch the term ‘beach-ready’.

“Being happy, healthy and comfortable in your own skin regardless of your shape or size is where we should be aiming our media fascination, not on being ‘beach ready’.

Seriously!” she exclaims.

18,000 women and girls live in the Lane Cove area (there are also lots of men, and let’s not forget they’re under similar pressures too). As summer looms, we are all susceptible to images and articles, urging us to lose (more than a few) kilos and, quick-smart, book ourselves into the beauty salon.

Wouldn’t it be a relief to toss those messages aside, and instead look to our local community, which is brimming with amazing female role models? People like Ljubenka (pictured), sailor Sylvie Stannage (who is our featured on Profile page this month) and activist Cate Turner (who is

our main interviewee) - three local ladies who will stress the importance of wellbeing – both physical and mental – above ideas of becoming ‘beach-ready’.

Wellbeing, in its truest sense, allows Ljubenka to enjoy a busy career and raise a young family. It means Sylvie can enter sailing competitions, reach number 10 in the country, and aim for the Olympics, while for Cate it means she can fight another day as an incredible 91-year-old activist.

Unfortunately, however, our local role models attract few, if any, followers on Instagram; unlike countless models and “influencers” who turn filtered images of heavily made-up faces into fake portraits of “health”.

But without genuine health on our side we achieve little.

Ljubenka has known this for a long time. As a curve model, she believes beauty and wellbeing go hand-in-hand and celebrating your natural body is vital.

“Don’t put that pressure on yourself to be like others. You can’t compare apples with oranges. Embrace your own life journey and see where it takes you,” she says.

This approach to life led Ljubenka to a modelling career where she is represented by Sydney-based Chelsea Bonner, Executive Director of BELLA – a modelling agency that represents women of all shapes and sizes.

Just like real life.

Chelsea’s passion for body positivity and mental health in the beauty industry has caught the attention of global clients.

Her quest to stop the portrayal of unrealistic and unhealthy body images is remarkable. She recently spoke at a Sydney conference, demanding companies use images of real women in their ad campaigns, as opposed to those whose bodies (often obtained through gruelling diets) are only – get this - representative of one percent of the population.

“What people often don’t see,” Chelsea says, “is the horrific and sometimes gruesome scenes behind closed doors. Every mouthful, every nip, every tuck, every injection comes at a price and the recovery from it all is tough going. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone.”

Unfortunately for us this portrayal of ‘beauty’ is nowadays seen as the embodiment of success and good health.

Rarely does the media (TV, film, social media, advertising) depict women like our wonderful local role models.

A change is the horizon, though. Chelsea recently gave a presentation to more than a thousand people who work in marketing that revealed the following: only four percent of women consider themselves beautiful; only 11 percent of girls are comfortable describing themselves as ‘beautiful’, while 72 percent of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful.

In the meantime, Chelsea and Ljubenka will be keeping themselves busy. Chelsea will soon launch an ‘industry stamp’ encouraging companies to keep a record of the models they have used in their advertising campaigns.

The idea behind the ‘stamp’ is that those companies who have used models of all sizes, and from all backgrounds, will receive a badge of honour, to celebrate their support for all women and men in Australia.

Say ‘screw it beach-ready!’, put on your swimmers, head to the beach, and realise that a healthy you is the best you. Let’s get ‘beach-happy’ instead.

A ROUTE TO WELLNESS FOR POSTPARTUM MUMS Magdalena Hawley runs a local program called Mums Going Strong Fitness and argues that postpartum mums – even those who are six or more years post giving birth – should also banish the idea of 'beach-ready'!

M

edia and society send mums messages that they need to fix their imperfections and that they need to get their pre-baby body back within weeks after they give birth.

One of the compliments you might receive post-birth is “you don’t even look like you had a baby”! As if looking like you actually had a baby is a bad thing!

What you need to know and understand is that plenty of mums get back into shape or into even better shape than before they had kids. But it doesn’t matter how you look, you will not get your pre-baby body back!

A women’s body undergoes many transformations during the nine months of pregnancy and during labour (doesn’t matter if it’s vaginal birth or C-section). And many of those changes remain postpregnancy. Your breasts will get bigger, then they will shrink, and can also become saggy. You can

get varicose veins and your shoe size can also change. And let’s don’t forget about the internal changes.

You may suffer abdominal muscle separation, that can take a while to heal, an incision to your abdominal muscles during a C-section or trauma to your pelvic floor after vaginal delivery. Your pelvic floor also is going to stretch during the pregnancy, which can impact your incontinence.

Not everyone is going to experience all these changes, but you need to understand that post-birth your body is not the same anymore and you need to get to know it.

Lots of mums want to get back to the gym as soon as possible and feel like themselves again, without understanding that exercising after childbirth is about restoring your physiological functions. Mums should

be really careful when returning to exercise after having a baby. It is very important that the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles have regained enough strength before recommencing sports, aerobics, running or heavy lifting (and it doesn’t matter if you had a baby six weeks ago, six months ago or six years ago). Participating in these, or other high-impact activities too early may reduce pelvic floor muscle strength and cause long-term bladder and bowel problems or even pelvic organ prolapse.

Many mums get back to exercise too early causing themselves issues, pushing their exhausted bodies to limits; just because they think they need to look certain way to be worthy.

Flecked with gold: O the sandstone mansions of 1880s Lane Cove and surroundings

The megaliths around The Canopy's roadside face on Rosenthal Avenue are an attractive homage to a significant feature of the North Shore's landscape - sandstone.

Where, when and why it was quarried in the early days is quite a story.

n the North Shore, the sandstone headlands along the Lane Cove River were an important source of building material for early residents. Of course, in the eons before, the Cammeraygal people used these sandstone headlands for their dwellings and a canvas for their art.

Settler dwellings were made of materials at hand—timber that grew along the ridges, mud bricks and wattle-and-daub for the 'Ticket of Leave' poor and sandstone for the emerging middle-classes. Brickworks at Greenwich operated in 1870, but brick making on the North Shore did not allow for the steady supply of fired bricks until the 1880s when brickworks were established at Artarmon.

Many early houses were made of sandstone quarried on-site.

Carisbrook Historic House on Burns Bay Road is one example.

Constructed in the 1880s, it is made with sandstone quarried nearby. An 1885 newspaper advertisement selling the Carisbrook Estate mentions two quarries at Linley Point.

One of these was worked by the Trickett family who also owned a quarry in Greenwich from the early 1870s. George Trickett and his sons, John, William and Edward, ran the site as well as other sandstone quarries in Ballast Point (Birchgrove) plus the one at Linley Point. The CONTINUED OVER PAGE >

Australian Museum in 1846. Circular Quay quarries gave us the Treasury building and the Free Library at the corner of Bent Street (1849), and between 1830 and 1850, private owners at Grafton Wharf (Barangaroo) reclaimed the shoreline with sandstone rubble and seawalls.

Trickett brothers were local sculling champions, with Edward holding the World Sculling Championship, the first Australian world champion in any sport. The story goes he gained his strength rowing the harbour between quarries.

Trickett's Greenwich quarry provided the sandstone for the Botanic Gardens harbour seawall, Port Kembla's breakwater and the Macquarie Lighthouse renovations (where Edward met his future wife). Their houses, and the houses of their neighbours, the Greens who built Greenwich House in 1837, were all sandstone.

So too Northwood House, built in 1878 by Mrs. Davy, complete with private sandstone wharves on Northwood Point and Gore Creek Bay. In 1884, the Northwood wharf was donated to the public. It seems the sandstone, originally quarried on-site, was reused by the LCC in 1908 in an upgrade. Longueville and Tambourine Bay wharves also got waiting rooms made of sandstone quarried on-site. All were weatherproof and could seat about thirty people with tiled roofs, plastered walls, concrete floors and gas lighting. And, so ferry commuters could be reminded of the ever-benevolent Mrs. Davy, she left funds to build a fountain in her memory at the Northwood site.

After WWI sandstone for public buildings lost its appeal, but throughout the 19th century Sydney's quarrymen and architects from Francis Greenway to Edmund Blackett created a city of golden sandstone. Stone was quarried along Cockle Bay (Darling Harbour), Circular Quay, Kent and Sussex Streets to Millers Point and at Paddington. The Gaol Quarry produced Darlinghurst gaol and courthouse (1822), the first designated Post Office in Bent Street (1820s) and St. James' Church (brick and sandstone) (1820). After 1850, industrialised quarrying at Pyrmont provided sandstone for buildings, seawalls, the new railway and the reclamation of Darling Island with its slipways and buildings. The 'Paradise' and 'Half-way' Quarries produced stone for the Sydney Town Hall, the new GPO and the Queen Victoria Building. To the suggestion that the city was short of supplies, 1855 newspapers reported that sandstone was "in immense abundance" on the North Shore, along the Lane Cove River, and at Middle Harbour.

Quarrymen and ballastmen held Society meetings in the Quarryman's pub and saw to it that blocks filled the holds of ships bound for countries across the Pacific for building construction. Between 1880 and 1893 Sydney sandstone won first prizes at the Amsterdam, India and Chicago Exhibitions.

Speaking of gold: sometime in the 1860s the Rev. William Clarke saw specs of gold in the sandstone on the North Shore. By 1894 the Royal Society was wondering if that gold could be extracted and Professor Liversidge reported that in experiments he found assayed gold to the value of between £2 and 12/- per ton. At the time, a cyanide process could treat tailings at a cost of 3/- per ton, so there was some profit to be had.

In the event, no one set about extracting the gold from Sydney sandstone. Who knows, perhaps today it is a viable proposition. But please, don't go prospecting on those lovely monoliths along Rosenthal Avenue.

Is tourism sustainable?

We’ve come a long way but there is still a long way to go.

If you enjoyed all the fun at the recent Lane Cove Rotary Fair, and took a walk down Sustainability Lane, you undoubtedly have even a passing interest in the environment and what initiatives are being taken to make this world a better place. After all, we each have a vested interest if not for ourselves then certainly for our children and theirs.

The same can be said for my industry – tourism. I’m currently sailing with our group in the Mediterranean onboard Seabourn Ovation. Only 8 months ago, I was onboard her sister ship, Seabourn Encore however there are some marked differences between this experience and that one. The complimentary water to enjoy ashore is now in recyclable bottles that we return to the ship each night for sterilisation and reuse. The excellent coffee, when takeaway, now comes without plastic lids and surely it can’t be long before this will be served only in keep cups. As is now standard practice, plastic straws are ne’er to be seen.

The cruise industry has long focussed on sustainability. “Grey” water is treated until it is clean enough to discharge safely way out to sea. Long before we even had a plant in Sydney, ships have been desalinating seawater for use onboard, including drinking water. And ships will always prefer to plug into the electricity

grid when in port, rather than burning fuel. It’s a shame our ports are not so well-prepared. Interested readers may like to reference https://cruising.org/ sustainability to learn more.

You will all be familiar with Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin having long ago taken a pro-active approach to carbon credits, with the ability to purchase offsets offered at the end of each transaction.

Qantas has even gone so far as to develop a computer programme that will fly the plane on a route variation that minimises the impact of headwinds and thus saves fuel.

While any such initiatives to reduce fuel usage usually start for cost-benefit reasons, what I am reading in the travel press is that sustainability is of equal importance. I’m also hearing about Flight Shame - a relatively new notion in Australia but one that has gained a lot of traction in Europe.

Certainly, flying is not sustainable. Yet, here in Australia, where we are so far away from the rest of the world, it is likely that only a relative few will ever consider not flying somewhere, simply to save the environment. After all, the plane is going there anyway, empty or not isn’t it? And we do not have the fall back solution of an extensive railway system.

Yet it is foreseeable that this focus will cause both travellers and airlines to think of ways to reduce their footprint, such as fewer planes flying at full capacity.

Or smaller capacity and more fuel efficient aircraft being used. Already KLM is suggesting to its clientele that they consider flying “responsibly” – bringing fewer bags and flying less often! Or more teleconferencing for business. All is certainly not lost as you may like to read here: https://eco-age.com/news/airlinesmaking-sustainable-air-travel-possible Once upon a time, “clean and green” conjured up visions of remote and/ or white environments such as New Zealand or Alaska, Scandinavia and the Poles. Now it is very much a concept and an expectation centred on what we are each doing, individually and collectively to sustain the planet. I don’t believe scaremongering is the answer but rather considered, intelligent dialogue to ensure that we can minimise our footprint and still enjoy experiencing our world. I certainly welcome the new environmental initiatives being celebrated daily in my industry and am optimistic there are solutions for every problem.

can Turmeric really shrink tumours, reduce pain and kill bacteria?

T

urmeric is a yellow coloured spice widely used in Indian and South East Asian cuisine. It’s prepared from the root of a plant called Curcuma longa and is also used as a natural pigment in the food industry.

In the literature, curcumin is reported to be an antioxidant that protects the body against damage from reactive molecules.

These are generated in the body as a result of metabolism and cause cell damage (known as free radicals).

It’s also reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties, as well as encouraging the death of cells that are dangerous or no longer needed by the body.

Curcumin has been widely studied in relation to numerous ailments, but what does the literature say? Is consuming turmeric beneficial?

FOR ACHES AND PAINS Chronic inflammation has been linked to the development of numerous diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. There is some evidence curcumin reduces the levels of certain substances (cytokines) that produce inflammation.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which combine data from several randomised controlled trials (where an intervention is tested against a placebo, while the subjects and those conducting the study don’t know who has received which treatment) support this finding to a certain extent.

A meta-analysis of nine randomised controlled trials showed taking curcumin supplements led to a significant reduction in cytokines that produce inflammation. But the authors claimed these reductions were modest, and it’s unclear if they would actually have a benefit in real life.

These trials were conducted with small sample sizes ranging from 10 to 50 people, which reduces the strength of the evidence. It’s difficult to draw a conclusion on a beneficial dose and how long you should take curcumin, or the population group that can benefit the most from curcumin.

A meta-analysis investigated the effects of turmeric/ curcumin on pain levels in joint arthritis patients. The group supplemented with 1000mg of curcumin per day said they had reduced pain compared with the placebo group.

In this study, curcumin was found to be as effective as ibuprofen in terms of reducing pain levels in these patients. But the authors of this meta-analysis themselves suggested that due to small sample size and other methodological issues there is not sufficient evidence to draw definitive conclusions.

But these studies have been conducted in animals and are very few human trials have been conducted in this area.

One study that reported reduction in blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients reports a change in blood glucose from 8.58 to 7.28 millimoles per litre after curcumin supplementation. People with levels above seven are classified as diabetics. So in clinical terms, the change is not that much.

“In relation to heart disease, animal studies show benefits of curcumin supplementation in improving heart health” Similarly in relation to heart disease, animal studies show benefits of curcumin supplementation in improving heart health, but there are very few clinical trials conducted in heart disease patients.

Smaller clinical trials looking at ten patients also show benefits of curcumin in reducing serum cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. But meta-analysis looking at combined effects of different trials does not show these benefits.

Curcumin is also thought to be beneficial in preventing insulin resistance (which leads to increased blood sugar), improving high blood sugar and reducing the toxic effects of high blood glucose levels.

Although there are some small studies (in 25 cancer patients) that showed reductions in precancerous lesions, and two patients showed shrunken tumors, this small number is not enough to conclude anti-cancerous effects of curcumin.

There is some evidence curcumin lessens the severity of side-effects from radiation therapy such as radiation-induced dermatitis and pneumonitis (inflammation of lungs), but not the cancer itself.

SAFETY Research shows not all curcumin we take orally is absorbed. This has led to the use of other things such as lipids (fats) and piperine (found in black pepper), to help it absorb into our system.

High intakes (up to 12 grams a day) of curcumin can cause diarrhoea, skin rash, headaches and yellowcoloured faeces. Looking at the Indian population, they consume about 100mg of curcumin a day, which corresponds to 2 to 2.5 grams of turmeric per day.

But they also consume these amounts over relatively long periods of time (typically their lifespan). There are reports of lower cancer rates in the Indian population and this has been linked to turmeric consumption, but there are no longer term trials proving this link.

It appears that in order to receive benefits from high doses over a short period of time, people are now resorting to injecting turmeric intravenously. There is no evidence to support the benefits of high doses of turmeric or IV injections of turmeric at all.

In fact, at very high doses, curcumin’s predominant activity switches from antioxidant to pro-oxidant, which means rather than preventing cells from damage, it promotes cell damage and has also been reported to cause tumours in rodents.

Although curcumin is showing some encouraging effects in reducing markers of inflammation in humans, the majority of the pharmacological effects of curcumin are in lab studies or animal experiments.

“It’s best to consume turmeric orally as a spice” Until there are more high quality randomised controlled trials conducted to confirm the benefits of curcumin or turmeric, it’s best to consume turmeric orally as a spice as part of a healthy, nutritious diet. 

Running can be a fantastic way to keep fit. It's a low-cost form of exercise that can be done pretty much anywhere. Many people wrongly believe that running will damage their knees and so they give up running when they experience pain.

There is evidence to say running can be beneficial for knees as it strengthens both the knee cartilage and surrounding muscles.

Our bodies are designed to take loads like running. Recreational runners have less knee arthritis than non-runners.

Common areas of pain include the knee joint itself, the kneecap region or the outside of the knee. There are several reasons why people report knee pain while running. These can include muscle strength and control in the legs and pelvic region, running technique and past injuries. Most of these reasons are changeable if correctly identified and addressed.

If you do have pain on running, we will listen to how much running you want to do, we will perform a detailed assessment of your musculoskeletal system including strength and flexibility and an assessment of your running technique. From this we can build a plan and work with you to get you back to running painfree.

Why do you ‘grunt’ when you get out of a chair?

Andrew Lavender, Lecturer at the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science at Curtin University explains.

You never think it’s going to happen to you. Then suddenly you’re middleaged and you find yourself grunting when you pick up something from the floor or groaning when you get out of the chair.

Why do we do this? Is it a sign that we’re ageing fast? Or is it just one of those things that come with the middle years, like reading glasses, greying hair and “dad jokes”?

As far as I could find, there have been no specific studies to explain why otherwise healthy older people grunt or groan with the physical effort of everyday activities.

But, we can look to the evidence of what’s behind grunting in sport or training.

When we lift something relatively heavy, make fast movements or even stand up from sitting, we stiffen our torso. This stabilises our entire body.

If we were too relaxed, we would be floppy, lose balance and risk falling over.

So we fill the lungs by breathing in and tense up the muscles of the torso to stabilise the spine. We throw our arms forward to provide momentum and with this effort, we hold our breath to maintain that stability as we stand.

We then release the breath slowly or quickly, depending on the nature of the task. With slow movements, like lifting a barbell or getting off the couch, we’d release it slowly. If the muscles that move the vocal cords together are activated, we make a sound.

The evidence of whether grunting helps us move, strike or lift is mixed.

According to a 20-year-old study, grunting doesn’t help weightlifters lift heavier weights. They lifted as much in a “dead lift” whether they grunted or not.

However, in a 2011 study, shouting helped martial artists grip with greater force.

And in a 2014 study, tennis players had stronger serves and forehand strokes when they were allowed to grunt compared with when they were told to be silent.

So, it seems that whether grunting or other vocalisations help you perform depends on the task.

That said, tennis great Roger Federer (a “non-grunter”) seems to perform very well without this audible shot enhancement.

What all this means for grunting during everyday activities is unclear. Clearly, athletes’ grunts during fast, ballistic movements are different to the noises we make when exercising in a gym or when we get up from a chair.

While there has been no research on this phenomenon, as far as I can tell, grunting with physical exertion does seem to be habitual. These noises are most likely learned behaviours that we copy from others and start without realising.

So, you can choose not to groan the next time you get off the couch.

Making Changes ‘A leopard never changes its spots’ is a false and limiting philosophy. Maxims like these constrain us to old ways and attitudes. People fail to realise their (and others’) capacity to change, beyond their maturing physical appearance. We see this playing out in the media, particularly in politics, when a person’s immaturity is rolled out decades later, implying they have not changed. Yes, they are the same person, but many of their values will have altered significantly. We continue to be presented with opportunities to see the world differently and choose whether or not to be influenced by them.

I favour a life image of a clay pot being moulded by a master potter. The clay is the same, but is in a process of refinement. Likewise, our core values tend to remain, but everything else is capable of change as learning and life experience increase. As we age, we acquire more ability to weigh perspectives from the vast array of influences accumulated over time. References to older people being ‘set in their ways’ are sweeping generalisations which undermine mature wisdom.

Consider those doing further study, those actively contributing in their workplace and community for longer and others continually extending their learning and skills via online sources.

Catalysts for Urban Change Attention to the ‘finer grain’ of our built environment can help support all communities and walks of life, says Jon Johansen, as he finds inspiration on a trip through NYC, San Fran and London.

M

y thinking for this article evolved half-way through my current trip researching catalysts of urban change, en route in places such as San Francisco, London and New York.

San Francisco has just seen the opening of Salesforce Transit Centre and a magnificent urban park above. The roof terrace links to foyers of several commercial and retail buildings, and a multi-level void linking several levels below to public transport. Residential appears to be sparse in this CBD context, but there are many activity zones and quiet spaces as well as a well-established Mediterranean themed landscape, and plenty of workers and visitors to give life to the place.

New York has the High Line that has now existed for eight years, connecting the Whitney Museum to the recently completed Hudson Yards, and gentrification of the former Meatpacking District on the lower West Side of Manhattan. This has become a destination for locals and tourists alike, generating many spatial variables and a magnificent urban garden with a range of integrated artworks, a thriving market space beneath a bridge and quiet places woven in amongst the movement paths.

Around Kings Cross Station in London, the Coal Drop development is a massive project that integrates industrial heritage with high end retail, commercial (Facebook and Google HQs) and residential, and the Battersea Power Station project has Apple as well as a huge housing component that includes a small proportion of public and ‘key worker housing’ involving some luminary

generate a new lease of life for Lane Cove Village and the local community.

More boutique bars and restaurants like Little Red Robin will bring a more cosmopolitan character, but it is hoped a balanced and equitable public domain will benefit everyone in our community. architects like Frank Gehry and Sir Norman Foster. Both these staged projects are still works in progress, but appear to have the framework to be successful catalysts for change in existing inner urban areas, and within areas that are already experiencing renewal.

The Canopy in Lane Cove is of course more modest than any of the above, but could certainly benefit from their examples and how they integrate with the surrounding built form and ground connections to generate renewal.

Many of the hybrid of buildings that back on to Birdwood Lane are ripe for makeover and we must hope the pedestrian environment around the perimeter of The Canopy will

And while the wheels of any local economy are greased by investment cycles and business confidence influenced by top down policy, the potential for bottom up growth to seed new community ventures, cultural events and social engagement can ensure an ongoing urban life that is inclusive and sustainable. If managed the right way The Canopy can be a genuine place where all people of Lane Cove, regardless of their socio-economic background and way of life.

Garden No.1: Alan’s Garden Alan says: Our vegetable garden is in our front yard to harness the sun and to inspire others to grow veggies. It’s opened many conversations with people in the neighbourhood and its location means we enjoy it as part of our daily lives. We’ve created many meals entirely produced from our garden.

We focus on maximum productivity with minimum waste, and produce more vegetables, honey, fish and eggs than we can eat, sharing and selling the excess with family, friends and Crop Swap Sydney. We are 100% organic, thriving on manures, compost and worm juice, without the use of herbicides, fungicides or pesticides. The nutrient-rich water from our aquaponics system cycles through the two large grow beds, feeding the veggies which in turn cleans the water, producing abundant leafy greens and fish fresh from the pond. Our house is called The Hive and the hive theme has been carried through to the design of our hexagonal hardwood wicking beds – a nightmare to build, but beautiful to behold. Wicking means that they are self-watering through a reservoir beneath the

soil that is topped up monthly at most. This efficient system results in no surface evaporation. Our family of five love our garden, it’s set up to be abundant with minimal effort. We hope you like it too!

Garden No.2: Mandy’s Longueville Garden Mandy’s garden is a fusion between Permaculture and Japanese styles. Having recently left a large Permaculture garden for something a bit flatter and easier to manage, she is embracing the challenge of blending the existing Ken Lamb designed Japanese garden, complete with large koi carp, with her passion for growing all things edible. Helping her with the task is garden designer Cecilia Macaulay who, as fate would have it, designs Permaculture gardens, but now

Surrounded by a leafy environment, Lane Cove West PS community is proud of the vegetable gardens, chicken coop, fruit trees, native beehives, bush tucker garden and aquaponics fishpond. During Gardening Club, the students are engaged in cooking sessions where they collect the produce from the school gardens and eggs from the school chickens to prepare nutritious meals. Composting continues to be a part of the school environmental practice. Twice a week, students empty their scraps into the school compost bin. This waste is then broken down and then used by the school’s Garden Club to help fertilise the school gardens.

Smart Gardening

– keeping it watered and the mozzies at bay!

Do you ever wonder if gardening could be easier?

Applying some smart technology, new thinking and clever hacks to your habits can be a great way to save time, money and resources.

S

tarting with water, there are always ways to include water efficiencies. Are you watering in the early morning or late evening when evaporation rates are lowest? Are you giving you plants a deep, once a week soaking that encourages their roots to grow down deep where they are less likely to be affected by drought? If you’re not great at remembering to water when you should (or are allowed), or go away frequently, get yourself a smart timer or water station that’s programmable. And check you’re targeting your watering to the plants that need it most. You can also get water sensors that tell you when you need to water, the pH, and the temperature of your soil. Even self-watering pots, wicking systems and Elho Aqua Care water dispensers – perfect for potted and indoor plants, make watering easy, even when you’re not at home. And when it does rain, or when you’re in the shower, capture some of that water and use it on thirsty plants like hydrangeas, fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.

Of course, choosing the right plant for the place is super important.

If you have a sandy soil, make the most of it by planting natives that love good drainage. If you have heavier soil, build it up with organic matter, compost and

unnecessary outdoor lights when you’re not outside, or fit them with a sensor, as outdoor lights attract bugs and moths. Better still, use candles and diffusers to create ambience and add a calming atmosphere to any scene.

worm castings and it should grow anything. Succulents and cactus are great for tricky areas and pots that you might forget to care for. Whatever you have growing: mulch, mulch, mulch. Nature’s best way to keep the soil moist is to cover the ground with mulch – that can be anything, but water well before applying it and keep it around seven centimetres deep for best effects. Sugar cane is perfect for vegie gardens, rose gardens, flower gardens and even pots. And we all love green grass, so treat your lawn with some Green Up… and don’t forget to plant (or lay turf) using water storing crystals.

Lastly, coming up to summer, you want to make the most of your outdoor areas day and night. Beat the bugs with mozzie repellent plants like marigolds, lemon grass, catnip, lemon thyme and citronella geranium, tackle fleas with pennyroyal, and turn off

During November, Council presents ‘Festival by the River’. The Lane Cove River has played an important historical role in the development of our area. Today it remains a focus but more for water sports, bushwalking and cultural inspiration, just because it is so beautiful! There is a festival event for everyone, all celebrating our enjoyment of the Lane Cove River foreshore.

I live in Greenwich so the ‘Greenwich Village Arts Trail’ is a festival event I always attend on the first weekend in November. Council provides a free bus shuttle around the area. A diverse range of Greenwich artists open their studios to visitors. Wander from studio to studio and enjoy the Harbour views along the way.

You can also take Council’s free bus to ‘Food & Wine by the River’ at Tambourine Bay Reserve in Riverview. In a parkside setting by the river, this festival event provides the perfect blend of sunshine, water views and fine wines from the Orange region. There are also gourmet food stalls, deck chairs, plenty to eat and lots of children’s activities. This is becoming a hugely popular event. I hope to see you there!

Lighting of the Christmas Tree Save the date for Lane Cove’s Lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Plaza on Friday 6 December.

The celebrations start with kid’s activities and entertainment from 3:30pm until 7:00pm followed by a special Christmas show from 7:30pm7:50pm and the official Lighting of the Christmas Tree at 7:50pm.

Library To Your Door is now live

A first for Australia, Council has launched a new service enabling all library members who live within the Local Government Area aged over 18

to have library items delivered directly to their door. For a small fee of $2.50, residents can reserve items and have them delivered within three working days of the item becoming available.

New 50m outdoor pool base complete: Lane Cove’s new 50m outdoor pool is taking shape with the concrete tank, which will form the pool base, constructed on site in October and November.

The 50m pool and grandstand is scheduled to open in time for summer 2020/21.

Mindarie Park Stages 2 and 3: Construction is now underway to complete stages 2 and 3 of Mindarie Park. In the next few months Council will begin installing parkour activity equipment, a multi-games arena, an amphitheatre and small stage as well as additional barbecues and picnic settings. Young in Art 2019 Artworks from all eight local schools once again filled the Hunters Hill Town Hall in late October. Displaying works from Kindergarten to Year 12, Young in Art provided a showcase for the creativity and passion of both students and teachers. Hunters Hill Council was proud to host Young in Art and congratulates all of this year’s prize winners across all categories.

The overall junior section winner was Cora Ovenden of Boronia Park Public School, while the overall senior winner was Dylan Waldron from Hunters Hill High.

Carols in the Park 2019 The Hunters Hill Carols celebration returns to Boronia Park Ovals on Sunday 1 December 2019. Festivities, hosted by Nick Fury, start at 4:00pm. Santa will arrive to herald in the fireworks at the end of the evening. Fun for all of the family.

A considerable amount is happening in the Lane Cove electorate, and it's a brilliant time to get out and enjoy the beautiful spring days.

On November 19 (2.30-4pm), we have the launch of Mobile Makerspace at Lane Cove Library, a result of funding from the NSW State Government. This program is an excellent opportunity for locals to learn about coding and play with new technologies, including Makey Makey, Ozobots and other cool stuff.

On a more serious note, recent events have reminded us of the importance of maintaining the safety of our residents.

Our Liberal National Government has developed several policies to increase the frontline presence of our police force, as well as supply supplementary programs to decrease crime.

Recently we released the latest round of grants from our $10 million crime prevention grants program. This program focuses on tackling localised issues like poor lighting, graffiti, and teaching older residents about fraud.

Our $5 million CCTV fund is putting security cameras in crime hot spots to provide an additional level of security to small businesses and community facilities. Most importantly, however, is a $583 million investment over four years which will help with the Police forces crime-fighting capability. This funding is delivering more than 1500 new policemen and women, the single most significant increase for the NSW Police Force in more than 30 years.

It is these kinds of initiatives that have resulted in the lowest crime rates across our state in years. So thank you to our Police force and community for being proactive and vigilant, keeping our electorate peaceful and safe for our residents to enjoy.

Finally, a big congratulations to the many students who participated in this year's Hunters Hill Young in Art. It's a brilliant initiative run by Hunters Hill Council that highlights the artistic talent of our young locals.

Fun at the Lane Cove Fair Lane Cove Fair is a wonderful way to celebrate the coming of spring and for our community to come together.

The fair featured local businesses, arts and crafts, community organisations, food, kids rides and music for those who wanted to get into the swing of things. It was wonderful to catch up and chat about what is going on in the local area.

I would like to congratulate Lane Cove Rotary and Lane Cove Council for their efforts. The fair is a major fundraising event for Lane Cove Rotary and helps provide funding for local and global initiatives that make the world a better place.

Remembrance Day On 11 November this year Australians will join with people from around the world as we pause to commemorate Remembrance Day. This year we reflect on the Ode of Remembrance, which comes from the poem For the Fallen by British poet Laurence Binyon. Written just a few weeks after the war began, it anticipated the heavy losses and marked the two most important times of the day in military campaigns, which were dusk and dawn, known as “stand-to”.

In 1919 the Ode of Remembrance was selected to accompany the unveiling of the London Cenotaph and was rapidly taken up across the British Commonwealth.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

The curse of the selfie

BY LIZ FOSTER I don’t know why selfies are so popular. Back in the dark ages of the camera (digital or other) you never saw people craning their necks taking their own pics. You‘d just rock up to a tourist attraction and ask a passing random to do the honours. It still happens, a bit. But only if you’re over forty.

Under forty, the preference is to take your own pic, of yourself.

Even if someone else can take it. The only thing with a selfie is the aspect. The picture taker becomes a giant in the foreground. Selfie sticks change the perspective slightly but then all photos are a bit birds eye view. The traditional portrait pose in front of a famous landmark has all but disappeared.

Photo taking has become so ubiquitous people are curating experiences on camera without the bother of having them. A company in Russia hires out a private jet so (mostly) women can rock up and pose, champagne in hand, to create the experience and record it faithfully. Without actually taking off.

Meanwhile the rest of us are in danger of being whacked with higher insurance premiums. It turns out some insurers take a dim view of paying out people putting their lives at risk for that one crucial shot (hanging off a bridge, leaning over a cliff and so on). While some companies have capitalised on the burgeoning market niche by offering life insurance for selfie deaths. Go figure.

With 259 reported selfie deaths between 2011 and 2017, this lifestyle choice is more fatal than shark attacks – five times more, in fact. India is the world capital for ‘killfies’, with Russia, the United States and Pakistan all jostling for a podium finish.

Other countries are in contention though. There was the student who fell 700 feet from a famous Irish cliff in January.

Or the woman who was fatally scalded by a Chilean geyser.

The countless near misses are just as hard to believe. The woman who climbed over the barrier at an Arizona zoo for a jaguar selfie was mauled for her efforts. And visitors to Lake Tahoe during its annual salmon run insist on capturing that perfect bear selfie.

Closer to home I’m happy to report a hasty inventory of my phone reveals only 397 selfies from a total of over 5,000 pictures. There’s a lot of rubbish and double ups (Wait – what – 397??) – but at not even 5% I reckon I’m doing okay. And there’s no danger of running into a bear or a jaguar in Lane Cove, so I should be right.

Educated

BY TARA WESTOVER Educated is the memoir of Tara Westover, the youngest of seven children in a fundamentalist Mormon family living in rural Idaho. Her survivalist father was convinced that the End of Days was nigh, that the “Feds” were after them and that modern medicine was an affront to faith. Westover had no birth certificate until the age of nine, no conventional schooling and no medical treatment. The family was isolated from society, living in the shadow of their mountain and working in their father’s junkyard. Gene, their father, was casually cruel and unconcerned about their safety and they suffered horrendous injuries under his “care”. The refusal of medical attention in the face of serious injury, and a persistent belief that this was God’s will, led to gross neglect and abuse. Her mother’s quiet submission to her father’s will – a result of her love and fear of him – is an abdication of her parental responsibility.

In her teens, Tara’s father’s views became even more extreme and his behaviour more erratic and her brother became violent towards her. Shawn is a bully and a psychopath and the book provides a harrowing account of his violent and manipulative attempts to bend Tara to his will. At the age of 17, Tara decided to escape the mountain like two of her brothers before her and seek an education. By the time she was 27 years old, she had attended college on a scholarship, earned a degree and eventually a doctorate at Cambridge University. At 30 years old, she has published a Memoir about her extraordinary life.

This is a disturbing but engrossing story about an isolated, extremist family held in thrall by the father and a young woman’s journey to educate herself. Gene is a passionate, uninformed tyrant who Tara suspects is suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder. He rules his family with an iron fist and demands loyalty in the form of strict adherence to his arbitrary rules for living and Tara pays a hefty price for seeking a truth outside that of her father’s.

The three Westover children who ultimately escape the mountain and attend college all achieve PhDs. Gene claims this as evidence of the success of their homeschooling, but it is their resilience and determination which is likely a result of their negligent upbringing. It is astonishing that these three had the strength to escape the bounds of their restrictive world and seek enlightenment outside it. It is their intelligence and their strength of character which is their passport out - that informs their instinct that there is more to the world than their father’s picture of it.

Despite the challenges of Memoir as a form – the deeply personal recounting of the writer’s experiences as they remember them and the risks to “truth” – this is a fascinating book and I am in awe of Westover: her courage, her fortitude and her accomplishments.

Contemporary jewellery made accessible for all

Lane Cove artXtra 2019 Exhibition The annual exhibition of the works created by members of the Lane Cove Art Society will take place 15-30 November 2019.

The works feature varied mediums from oils, acrylics and watercolours, to pastel drawings and prints.

The opening night is Friday 15 November from 6pm. From then on it is open daily: Sat 16 Nov – Mon 2 Dec, 10am to 4:30pm at Gallery Lane Cove.

Local resident and artist Bridget Kennedy is set to expand the traditional idea of “renting” expensive, antique and exquisite items of jewellery to encompass contemporary items in a newly-created Sydney ‘Art Jewellery Bank’.

Such a rare idea, it has only really been achieved by the Danish Arts Foundation that began collecting jewellery in 1978.

With more than 300 pieces of jewellery in its ‘jewellery library’, those items can be borrowed when the lender attends a public event, such as a concert, exhibition or film opening, or any other opportunity where the work can enjoy public exposure.

For the ‘Art Jewellery Bank’ exhibition, opening November 28, several jewellery artists were invited to submit an item of their work, accompanied by a statement, that will be made available to ‘rent’ by the broader community, enabling these wearable artworks to become accessible to all. The artists will also make a small collection of related work available for sale.

“The people who loan out the jewellery,” Bridget explains, “will be invited to take a selfie of themselves wearing the work and provide a few notes on their experience. This will be documented, building up a history of the work and its public interactions”.

Bridget’s vision is that this seed of an idea might grow into something bigger, her vision of an Art Bank, or Library collection of Australian Art Jewellery (developed through public funding, with acquisitions either donated to the collection, or purchases funded through leasing of art jewellery) that is able to see the light of the day on the bodies of people who value experiences over their wardrobes, and delight in the opportunity to promote Australian wearable art.

Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award open for entry The biennial Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award is a national prize that was established in 1981 to promote and support talented young emerging artists in Australia.

We are currently looking for volunteers in the following areas:

"What do we want? Age Equality! When do we want it? - Now!!" was the chant of many local seniors in Lane Cove for the Age Equality March on Thursday 24th October. The march was the first in Lane Cove but will not be the last with plans for next year’s already being discussed.

positive ageing movement was inspired by a poem written by English author Jenny Joseph, who at the age of 29 in 1961 wrote “Warning”. It was my mother’s favourite poem and I found a copy of it in her desk after she died. In 1996 it was voted as the favourite postwar poem in the UK in a BBC poll.

Ageism affects everyone - as one placard read: 'Antiageism benefits all ages'. Afterwards, they wound their way to the Longueville Hotel where initially they caused consternation by arriving banging drums and blowing whistles. They were allowed in after promising to not bang the drums inside!

I’m sure the marchers in Lane Cove weren’t planning on spending their pension on brandy and summer gloves but they were demanding the right to be acknowledged and the right to be seen and heard. All too often we older people feel invisible in shops, restaurants and even on the pavements as people bowl along with no regard for our inability to step smartly aside as they walk three abreast towards us.
