FROM THE EDITOR

Spring has sprung. The jasmine is releasing its fragrance into our garden at dusk and the heavy blankets have been packed away for the warmer months. Summer looms. As the poet Keats so nicely puts it, we are on the brink of “the murmurous haunt of flies on summer eves.”

I don’t know if I could muster the kindness to describe swarms of flies as romantically as a “murmurous haunt.”

However, I digress. It’s Spring, and what better a time than to take on a new project. And this issue of TVO is my first as its new editor. I’m the new girl in town. I’m most likely going to blunder through the first couple of issues as I find my feet. Please forgive any newbie errors.

Lane Cove and its surroundings is unique in many ways, as all our readers would already know. The vibrant community and the sheer number of activities available to locals is phenomenal. It provides a rich seam for TVO to mine. It’s my remit to continue the excellent work TVO has done to showcase the variety offered by the local area. I follow in the footsteps of other fantastic editors.

Please get in touch with me (editor@thevillageobserver. com.au) with your stories, thoughts, ideas, photos and news. I adore good stories. As a journalist for 20 years, it’s my reason for getting out of bed, except also the fact I have two young boys who wake up with empty stomachs that need filling. And two guinea pigs, but they’re another story. They’re the ones who really attract the “murmurous haunt” of flies to our jasminescented garden.

Just before I dash, please be mindful that TVO is produced by Sydney Community Services. Any profits we make go back to this wonderful non-profit which serves seniors and those with disabilities in the local area. WEAR PURPLE AND MARCH AGAINST AGEISM We wrote about this last month, but just by way of a small reminder - Lane Cove seniors, their families and friends are invited to wear purple and join a march to raise awareness about the negative impact of ageism on older people. Taking place Thursday 24 October 2019, the marchers will meet outside the Lane Cove Library at 10:30am for a briefing.

LOCAL CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR NAMED BEST IN NSW If your children are being educated by Deanne Allan they are in the best hands (ed’s note – this is true – she looked after our son!). The Greenwood Hunters Hill early childhood educator has been named the best in NSW in G8 Education’s Standout Educator Awards program.

Macquarie University researcher, Dr Joyce Siette, is on the hunt for people who are willing to take part in free memory assessments and brain exercises in Lane Cove.

The marching group will depart the library together at 10:50am then gather at the bandstand in the Plaza for a Mayoral welcome and light entertainment from the Older Women's Network.

The march will then continue along Longueville Road to the Longueville Hotel (cnr Little Street) ending at 11:30am. The march will end at The Longueville Hotel where lunch will be provided (at your own expense).

HAVE YOUR SAY ON COUNCIL’S 20-YEAR PLAN AND VISION Council is currently consulting with the community on its 20-year vision for land use planning and priorities, however, the deadline to get your thoughts and opinions to Council is looming. To use its full title - the Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (DLSP) aims to ensure growth and change are managed in a way which enables the community to enjoy high levels of amenity, liveability, economic prosperity and a pristine natural environment.

It also aims to align local values and aspirations with longer-term area plans including the Greater Sydney Regional Plan and North District Plan. To find out more you can view the Draft LSPS and all relevant background documents online, or visit Lane Cove Civic Centre, Lane Cove Library or Greenwich Library where public exhibitions are being held. Selected from 11,000 educators across the country, Deanne was nominated by the children’s parents and peers for her outstanding contribution to the wellbeing and healthy development of the children in her care.

More than 10,000 nominations were received this year. One Greenwood parent said, “Deanne is a shining example of an educator willing to go the extra mile. Daily she educates and entertains the children at an extremely high standard and yet still finds the time to support our son with speech improvements that we are working on outside of Greenwood.”

Another parent spoke of the overwhelming support Deanne provided when her daughter’s father suddenly passed away.

“When her world was rocked, Deanne kept it steady in a professional, caring and compassionate way, which will have a lasting impression on our daughter’s life.”

The one-day free clinic will offer older community members a memory screening with a qualified health professional to gauge how their memory is functioning. They will also be able to participate in activities to boost brain capacity and delay dementia such as tailored physical exercise classes and brain training sessions.

Dr Siette’s research has shown that age is not the most likely predictor of declining memory function in older Australian adults.

Using a suite of community aged care services has multiple benefits for older people, including increased social interactions. These connections are likely to have a positive impact on mental and brain health, Dr Siette said.

This one-day free clinic will be held at a local community centre in May 2020.

LANE COVE TO STEP OUT FOR ANNUAL ROTARY FAIR It’s hailed as the fair of the season, attracting all the residents of Lane Cove and the surrounding areas. With a super-sized raffle – bigger than any seen before – and a hive of activities, stalls, live music and food, October 13 promises to be an exciting community get-together, inspired by kindness, giving and fun. Here we look back on the event’s history and what’s in store this month.

HISTORY Sometime in 1992, the late Don Urquhart stood up at a Rotary meeting and decreed Lane Cove Rotary should organise an agricultural fair. As he put it, “I’m concerned local children think milk comes out of a bottle”.

All members pitched in enthusiastically; they needed to; as their plans were ambitious. Assorted industry experiences were drawn upon that enabled the construction of a large stage on Pottery Green.

What agricultural show would be complete without woodchopping though? Dependon, a local knife sharpening company, put up $3000 prize money to attract some of Australia’s best woodchoppers – even legendary David Foster came up from Tasmania.

sheep dog trials; helicopter landings; the Pal Super Dogs, farm animals, Llamas; reptiles; boomerang throwing, amusement rides and over 100 stalls. In the evening the Lane Cove Youth orchestra played and were accompanied by fireworks.

Outside of Pottery Green there was a street parade of bands and sporting clubs marching and a billy cart derby, which raced down Little Street – it was perhaps more luck than judgement no one was killed! Inside the oval there were

But while the crowds were enormous, the money raised back then by Rotary unfortunately wasn’t.

TODAY 27 years on, the fair today, while very different, still enjoys that same wonderful Lane Cove community spirit.

More importantly, Lane Cove Rotary now raises the funds it sets out to. All of it is redirected back into assisting local community projects and other Lane Cove Rotary initiatives. It’s estimated that some 10,000 people will head into the Village over the day to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere, free live music, stalls, rides, face painting, food and Sustainability Lane.

This year the raffle has been ‘supersized’ with some fantastic, generously donated prizes. You are particularly encouraged to purchase raffle tickets, as this initiative helps Rotary’s fundraising efforts. The raffle will be drawn on the day and you will be contacted by phone straightaway whether you are still at the Fair or not.

GETTING THERE With the development of The Canopy, future fairs will have better parking options, as well other potential opportunities. But this year parking will be limited. Many people choose to walk and of course there is always the free Shuttle Bus kindly provided by the Council.

LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT Lane Cove Council will investigate the steps and measures that could activate a “night time economy” in the village and a report will shortly be submitted. It is hoped that improving lighting and walkways for the darker evenings will attract people to the wonderful variety of arts events, bars and restaurants in the local community.

UNITING CHURCH HOSTS GREG SHERIDAN TALK Greg Sheridan, Foreign Editor for the Australian and well-known social commentator will deliver a free talk based on his book “God is Good for You” at the Terrace Function Room, Lower Ground level Lane Cove Community Hub, Pottery Lane on Thursday 24 October from 7pm to 9pm.

VENTURERS GO FORTH! Lane Cove Scouts Group has received funding from the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation to kick start its Venturer Section Group for young people aged 15-17 – a highly anticipated unit that will offer a more adventurous program with the necessary equipment to undertake outdoor activities.

RETURN AND EARN MACHINE LANDS IN LITTLE STREET A site at Little Street car park has been chosen for the location of the “return and earn” reverse vending machine. Eligible drinks container will receive a 10-cent refund, while individuals and community projects can use the scheme to raise funds.

It will be located on the left-hand side before the boomgate.

An invitee of Lane Cove Uniting Church, it is billed as a “defence of Christianity in troubled times”.

Scouts NSW received this funding following a nomination from Russell Mahoney, a senior employee at Coca-Cola South Pacific and a Lane Cove resident whose child is a member of the local Scouts branch.

Free parking is available in the building for three hours.

SIR PETER COSGROVE TO SPEAK AT NORTH SYDNEY SENIORS EXPO Sir Peter Cosgrove will officially open the North Sydney Seniors Expo on October 10 2019.

Sir Peter has recently stepped down as Australia’s Governor General after serving in this role since 2014.

Sir Peter will be accompanied

by Lady Cosgrove and will speak at 11:00am.

The Expo is open between 10:00am and 2:00pm, held at Norths - 12 Abbott Street Cammeray.

It will have a range of exhibitors including volunteer and community organisations which can offer seniors a range of valuable opportunities to get involved in the community.

Key government agencies will also be at the Expo in case you have any questions on Centrelink, the National Broadband Network and the ATO.

LEARN HOW TO BECOME A RADIO PRESENTER (AND NAB YOUR OWN SHOW!) 2RRR, the community radio station on Victoria Road in Henley, is opening up its studios to local people who would like to be trained up as radio DJs. The 2RRR radio training course is run by Steve Ahern, who received an OAM for Services to Radio Broadcasting, and takes place over eight Tuesday nights from October 8. The weekly two-hour lecture and studio training covers all the basics that will help you to become a radio presenter.

You’ll learn how to use a radio ‘panel’ (the sound desk etc), write for radio, interview people and record and edit your show, among other essential topics. Many participants of the course end up hosting their own shows on the airwaves of 2RRR. All age groups are welcome.

MORTGAGE CHOICES After 22 years, Stephanie is retiring and sailing off into the sunset …. I am looking forward to some down time when I retire from the business – officially on 30th September! And certainly hope to hone my sailing skills and see if the mighty Rumba can improve on second place at this years’ Hamilton Island race week.

The challenge I’m setting for myself in “retirement” involves going back to school to qualify as a Financial Counsellor and then looking to work in a volunteer capacity in this field – which in many ways is so closely aligned to my current work but will have its own set of challenges I’m sure!

I won’t be leaving Lane Cove, I’ve lived here for 30 years and love it! So I look forward to seeing many of you around the local coffee shops or when walking my two crazy dogs around the streets and parks.

Thanks to all my clients – it’s been a terrific journey with you all and I’ve taken such joy in helping people get on the property ladder whether it’s the first time or the tenth!

My first job was pumping gas at age 15. I had lots of part-time jobs during school and while supporting myself at University. Once I left University, it was straight into real estate. That was back in 1998.

There was never any question that property was where I wanted to be.

Ideally, lying on a beach in Italy!

How would you summarise what makes this area of Sydney so special?

Describe an average day…

I’m up 5:00am for a gym session. After that, I have breakfast with my wife, Kate, and then head into the office at 8:30am.

I have a personal team of four, so we start the day with a meeting to discuss our campaigns and what we need to achieve that day. Then it’s phone calls with buyers and vendors, followed by appointments and listing presentations.

Real Estate can mean late nights because some buyers can only view properties after work. If I can, I head home at 6:30pm for dinner with Kate and a walk around the neighbourhood with our mini schnauzers, Asha and Fergus.

Community means caring and getting involved. As a business, we do a lot of local sponsorships including Lane Cove West Public School, Hunters Hill Public School, Lane Cove AFL Club, Lane Cove Cricket Club and the Hunters Hill Street Feast. These places and events bring the community together and being part of it all feels great for us. The more successful we are, the more we can give back.

Lane Cove Council Declares Climate Emergency Lane Cove has joined more than 900 jurisdictions worldwide, including 45 Australian councils, to recognise that we are in a state of “Climate Emergency” that requires immediate action by all levels of government.

In doing so, the Council acknowledges that climate change poses a threat to the future of our cities, including the Lane Cove Local Government Area and has declared its readiness to assist the State Government’s objective of net-zero emissions by 2050. However, it calls upon the Government to move this target to 2030 to avoid irreversible consequences, such as those to our environment; our livelihoods, communities and our future.

It has also stated its support for creating measurable policies and programs by the Government in its role to reduce carbon emissions and adapting to climate change in NSW.

Lane Cove Council will write to the Premier of NSW, our State and Federal members, the NSW Environmental Minister and the Federal Environmental Minister, advising them of Council’s resolution and calling upon them to act accordingly and urgently.

Stephen Miller CROSSING ATTENDANT, MARRIAGE CELEBRANT AND THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE ROTARY CLUB A MAN WITH THREE HATS A crossing attendant, marriage celebrant and the new president of the Rotary Club; Stephen Miller is a busy man. Here we chat to him about what has inspired him to become so deeply engaged in the local community and, ahead of the Rotary Fair on October 13, what he has planned for the Club.

You joined Lane Cove Rotary Club (LCRC) just over a year ago and recently became its new President. What was it that attracted you to Rotary?

One day I just had this overwhelming desire to give back and get involved with my local community. You know the old adage, ‘When the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear’. My teacher appeared.

LCRC has done some incredible work in the past and continues to do excellent work – can you tell us about it?

Currently we are all in full swing organising this year’s Lane Cove Rotary Fair. Besides being the current President, I’ve taken over the management of the Small Grants to Indonesia Project. Essentially we fundraise and work with a NGO on the ground in the very poor areas of East Indonesia. Life there is very basic. Children have to collect water every day, meaning they can’t go to school. There is often little sanitation, and disease and malnutrition prevail. For about $350, the Small Grants Project provides the materials needed to build a water tank. The farmer only ever receives the materials required. That’s what I love about this project it’s not about gifting money, it’s about helping people to help themselves.

We also fund school projects too which range from teacher training to infrastructure. Small transparent, trackable projects each for less than $400.

What’s your ambition for LCRC in the year ahead?

My number one goal for the year was to improve Rotary’s recognition in the community – our brand awareness. Those who do know the name sometimes mistakenly believe we’re a weird cult, frequented by rich old men exchanging secret handshakes.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re just a committed bunch of lovely, normal people who simply ‘care’ and just want to help our local community and other disadvantaged communities around the world in any way we can.

You recently “passively” retired.

Despite that, you have been keeping busy – what else do you get up to outside of LCRC? My main job now is a marriage celebrant and I’m on track to do about 20 weddings this year. I love my new job but you couldn’t do it as a day job. The cake often costs more than I do which is so wrong on many tiers! Still I’m fortunate enough to not need to look at it in that way! I do it to simply immerse myself in the abundance of love, happiness, joy and optimism that these (usually) young couples exude. I also have the great pleasure of being the school-crossing

our kids are safe and well – but we just don’t think something like this will ever happen to us. In about four months, Elliott went from being an extremely popular (I doubt 1000 people will come to my funeral); hugely talented; happy; healthy; busy Uni student… to beautiful memories. The pain of losing him hurts so much every day – I doubt we will ever stop grieving.

Tell us about your home life – your wife, and other children? Are they here in the local area?

Henrietta and I have been married for 32 years. Quite how I managed to first attract then hold onto such an incredibly, stoic and capable woman for so long is beyond me. We have two other amazing children Alice, who is 27 and Tristan, who is 20. Tristan is at UTS doing Design and Visual Communication, while Alice is spending 18 months living and working in London with her fiancé Jarrod.

The children are just lovely and I always try to brighten their day; their responses back always brighten mine. Seeing their trusting, beaming smiles and observing such polite manners from some so young is heart-warming.

You had your own graphic design and marketing companies in the past. Is there anything you miss about the old day job?

After Uni I worked in magazines in London which allowed me to meet some very famous people – that was always fun. Eventually I moved into corporate design and advertising. Towards the end, a couple of things made the decision to passively retire easy.

Firstly, I was tired of working with difficult clients who mess with your work, without qualification, to satisfy their own ego. Secondly, with my son sick and dying, I had an overwhelming desire to escape to a new life and do something different.

You have been very open about the recent loss of your son; something I’m sure will help those who have also suffered loss.

Did his passing change your attitude to life?

Enormously. Losing a child is the worst thing any parent will ever experience. Elliott’s death to a rare cancer made me realise just how precious life is and how you never know when you might lose it. All of us often take life far too much for granted – I don’t mean we are complacent, as we all work hard to make sure

You’re originally from the UK, but have spent 32 years in Australia. Have you spent most of that time in the local area?

Half of that time we lived in the Eastern Suburbs but eventually saw the light and moved to the North Shore.

What’s so special about this pocket of Sydney?

I love Lane Cove and deeply regret not moving here sooner. Having buses to the city that become an express once they get here is great, but the thing I love most is the sheer diversity of the suburb; such a wonderful eclectic mix of ages, colours and creeds all living largely happily together.

If there was one thing you could change in our local area, what would it be?

Lane Cove’s Achilles heel is of course the limited vehicle entry and exit access. I believe major road infrastructure should have been addressed long before any central development was permitted to start. Instead these roads have largely been ignored and continue to cause pain and frustration to many people daily. I know plans are in progress to ease the situation, but it could really have been avoided if the cart hadn’t been put before the horse – as my Mum used to say.

In the Name of Vanessa How one local family’s loss to breast cancer has led to the creation of the White Butterfly Foundation

V

anessa Juresic was part of a Lane Cove family and in May 2018 she passed away after suffering triple negative breast cancer.

She was 36 years old. Vanessa’s name has been lit up in media and social channels, after her family published a letter she wrote shortly before leaving us – a deeply touching read that reinforces just how lucky we are to be here. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and fittingly, Vanessa’s family and a committee of friends have come together to form the White Butterfly foundation to support more research into triple negative breast cancer.

Growing up ‘impeccably lucky’ on the North Shore, never in her worst nightmares did Vanessa Juresic imagine being taken from her loved ones so soon.

She wanted to be the ‘miracle kid’ to beat cancer and have a long, healthy and fulfilling life – one where she could make a difference. She dreamt of a life where she had the time to enjoy every experience, have a family of her own, and the opportunity to connect with people.

Tragically, Ms Juresic lost her rapid 15-month battle with triple negative breast cancer in May last year – but not before penning some final, heartbreaking words to her grieving family and friends.

The 36-year-old’s moving letter, full of life lessons and courageous, comforting advice, was first read in front of hundreds of mourners at her funeral and has since gone viral on social media, touching the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

Now her family and friends are honouring her last wishes to raise awareness and funds for research into triple negative breast cancer - and so The White Butterfly Foundation was born.

Raising money for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where Vanessa was a patient under renowned oncologist Elgene Lim, The White Butterfly's first fundraising event will be an afternoon garden party at The Woolwich Pier Hotel, from 2-6pm on Saturday, October 19 - and Vanessa’s sister Sophie wants the whole local community there.

"We are so excited, it's going to be such a special day," said Sophie Juresic, a founder of the White Butterfly charitable organisation.

"Sunrise's Edwina Batholomew is our MC, we have incredible cancer survivor Elle Halliwell as a guest speaker, X-Factor's Jess and Matt as entertainment and the most incredible prizes on offer, including a 'White Butterfly' diamond pendant.

“We just want to make a difference. We want to celebrate Vanessa's life by raising money for the research needed to stop people like her from dying from this insidious disease.

"We need to keep fighting for her."

Ms Juresic suffered Stage Four triple negative breast cancer, a strain of the disease that does not have any of the three receptors commonly found on breast cancer cells – oestrogen, progesterone or HER2.

Aggressive and difficult to treat, around 15 per cent of breast cancers are triple negative, and survival rates are less than 12 months if chemotherapy doesn’t help.

“The representation of white butterfly comes down to something simple, but yet so perfect,” she continued.

“Selfless love on Earth is stronger than death.”

“What Vanessa has done for the Garvan Institute, for her family and for the world is selfless, and what this means for us, what this gives us the opportunity to do, is to make that love stronger than death.

“Together we can research, operate, nurse, fundraise, but most of all care, and take a stab at finding a cure for triple negative cancer.”

Vanessa grew up in Lane Cove, attending St Michael’s Catholic Primary School and graduating from Monte Sant’ Angel Mercy College in neighbouring North Sydney before studying Communications at Sydney University. Vanessa went on to become a senior media advisor to a State Minister in the NSW Government, living near Balmoral Beach for her last few years.

She was a patient under renowned Garvan oncologist and researcher Elgene Lim, who also spoke of her at a Breast Cancer community update earlier this year.

“We see the public and our patients as partners in our research,” Dr Lim said.

“We all know that breast cancer is a horrible disease, and we are still far away from curing it. The patient is front and centre of this symposia.

“Vanessa was a particularly inspiring patient, and that experience has really urged Sophie and her family to do miraculous things and they are now very strong advocates of breast cancer research in the community.

What would I have told my pre-cancer self if I knew my end was so near?

What would I have appreciated more? What advice would I give to my loved ones? If you want something, go get it, now, trust me, you don’t want to be writing this speech. Stop procrastinating...

“It is of no use to us to study this disease in petri dishes or in mice – our patients have a critical role in our research agenda. We are all on the same page – to rid the world of this horrible disease.”

3. If you do not step forward, you will remain in the same place

There are three rules: 1. If you do not go after what you want, you will never have it 2. If you do not ask, the answer will always be no And most importantly, my golden rule: In a world where you can be anything...be kind. And don’t let anyone make you cruel. No matter how badly you want to give the world a taste of its own bitter medicine, it is never worth losing yourself. You never know what struggle someone is going through in their own lives.

Terminal or not you should be reaching for the stars, taking advantage of the amazing life you’ve been handed. Not because you might die! Dying is easy. Life is hard… but ridiculously rewarding. Challenge yourself.

Do that gym session you think you can’t do or run that half marathon, travel to that random country, challenge your boss, girls smash that glass ceiling and stop trying to fit into glass slippers, go for that job, eat that Xmas pudding and enjoy it. Over indulge in happiness. Because you’re alive not because you might die.

Don’t settle. At work, in that relationship, with anything. Keep fighting to get what you want. The best decisions I made in life weren’t easy but they were the ones where I found the strength to not settle. And the happiness and sense of achievement I got in return was worth the pain. I wish I’d figured this out earlier in life. God always opened up a window when I knew shutting the door was the right thing to do so trust and this will happen for you too. Don’t be scared. Life is short.

I loved people. There are so many extraordinary and complex amazing people to absorb and discover in the world. Notice them.

I still have clients come in wanting to train around Europe. And it’s great when everything works. However, porters are non-existent in some places and outnumbered by pickpockets in others, hefting your suitcase up onto a train is hard work and many stations are as crowded as airports. It’s not for the fainthearted and the less agile would be advised to fly, or choose another destination or route. Seniors tickets may not be as attractive as you think!

Definitely don’t overdo it. Leave plenty of time to transfer everywhere. Expect delays and have a loose backup in mind..

Stop and smell the roses with 3 or more night stays. Don’t cram your days so full of activities so that you have no time to enjoy an unexpected treat. Linger longer over lunch and savour the flavours.

You’re never too old to travel….

Or at least that is what my industry postulates.

And it is true. For “travelling” can be as inspiring as a one year sojourn abroad or as little as a train ride to the city. It’s whatever floats your boat. What matters is that you travel according to your means and capabilities and therein lies the clincher – it is absolutely essential to know what you can manage and what else around you might have an impact on your plans.

Your fitness, your health, the health of your nearest and dearest.

I’ve done a huge amount of travelling this year and have a newfound respect for those who travel for a living. The need to be constantly organised, what to pack and what to leave, how you are going to get from point A to point B to point C, and how well you handle jetlag are all critical bits of the journey jigsaw. Not to forget the bits in between at home.

You definitely need to leave with a sense of humour, and plan B, and know that you have the finances to pay for any emergencies. On my most recent trip, too long at 7 weeks long, we encountered several problems. All of them were out of our control. On the hottest day in Europe for decades, our expected-tobe-comfortable train journey Paris to Amsterdam took 12 hours door to door instead of 5. No-one knew what was going on, trains were cancelling willy-nilly or terminating short of the destination and we were then left to wait, in hope, for another train. On arriving at our hotel, hot and sweaty and feeling horrid, I was mortified when the hotel’s General

Manager came out to greet me and proffered a handshake. I just couldn’t do that to her …

On another occasion, our pre-booked transfer failed to arrive and sadly while we were only 40 minutes from Bordeaux, it was almost countryside with no quickfix taxis or ubers to be had. We missed our train despite having allowed two hours door to door and had to purchase new tickets and wait 3 hours for the next available seats. And so there was no leisurely afternoon in Paris. My mood was dark, my wallet lightened and all I really wanted to do at that stage was go to the airport, stay there the night prior to my flight and escape from France as early as I could.

Clearly I was tired else why would one feel so fed up in such a beautiful city?

But I was lucky. I had funds to buy new tickets, I had company to share the burden, I was still physically fit and able, and at the end of both these tiresome days, I slept in a wondrously comfortable bed in a beautiful hotel.

Take a cruise. You might pooh pooh the idea that you’re not in any place long enough to get a real feel for it …. The upside however is that you unpack only once and the effort to get somewhere is out of your hands. You just go where you are led and make the most of your brief time in port. Don’t care that it’s short – it’s worth remembering that time is not on your side to see everything anyway so just be. Just enjoy.

man’s core identity is often associated with his job. For working men, their workplace has a significant influence on their lives and can affect their wellbeing. Studies show that work-related mental health issues are affecting an increased number of men, as a result of constant stress and pressure. The stigma surrounding men’s mental health and their reluctance to seek assistance, or discuss their issues, often results in self-deprecation and feeling trapped, which can lead to anxiety and depression. Normalisation of mental health issues, acknowledgment of the importance of workplace wellbeing, and adequate support may help to combat this problem.

Strategies to deal with stressors in the workplace include creating a regular work/life balance. Try to take a lunch break or go for a walk outside of the office or workplace for a short period of time each day. If you must take work home with you, set a time to finish several hours before you go to sleep. Try and become more resilient: focus on your strengths, put life events into perspective, and consider alternate ways to reframe your thinking about a challenging work situation. Adopt mindfulness - a ‘grounding’ technique that focuses on directing your attention to the here and now. It assists with improved focus, concentration and self-control in the workplace. Remind yourself to take a moment to be mindful can be a very effective tool to manage your general wellbeing.

How to help a man that you know: be direct and ask how they are going, or ask about a specific issue.

Don’t beat about the bush. Many men use humour to disguise mental and physical health issues, so it’s important to be aware of when to prompt for more information.

The easiest knee pain to understand is the pain that results from sporting injury or trauma. However, pain that simply develops for no apparent reason in the front of the knee is common and very real. Knee pain can develop as a result of less than ideal knee loading with running, jumping or twisting activities, leading to increased load around the knee. Typically, it can be aggravated by prolonged sitting, going up and down stairs and may limit your ability to run or play sport.

A more conservative approach to cosmetic dentistry is using bonded composite resin to change the appearance of your teeth. This material is added to the teeth and sculpted into the desired shape. Why Combine Pharmacy with Natural Therapy?

mood swings) that later on, in the 90s, became known as Insulin Resistance and Type 2 diabetes, came back to inform me of a change of address – because they had found a partner!

To understand that, let me start with my story.

Then came the day when my first chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) client arrived, having been referred by a GP whose patient “had CFS AND acne – and you cleared up both. So I’m sending ALL my CFS clients to you”! Wow!

I was feeling pain in the abdomen, low on energy, four young children, owned a large seaside pharmacy, working seven days and some nights, big mortgage, training for half marathons, taking random vitamins, always fatigued, constant pain, and contracted the “Oyster ‘flu” going around – and after six weeks, celebrated my recovery by going out – and copped seafood poisoning. Was in bed for weeks, health fluctuating, and after three months of these afflictions, the GP decided to remove my appendix.

Returned to work – and then OK – for three days! Then the symptoms started to return.

Back at work and in reasonable state of despair and disrepair when a naturopath occasioned in, suggested a treatment and after three days I was feeling probably better than I had ever felt.

At my request, the naturopath delivered her company’s range of natural vitamins and sent me off to my first seminar, where my learnings began on the nutritional

requirements that drive the 100,000 chemical reactions every second in every one of the 50 trillion cells in your body that drive your immune system and convert lamb chops for you.

Using variations of that simple “recipe” I have given many others similar advice with pleasing results.

So, in the late 90s, I enrolled in Naturopathy.

So much did all this information resonate with me that I obtained separate diplomas in Nutrition and Botanical Medicine (herbs), along with four other certificates in related subjects, as well as the original Advanced Diploma in Naturopathy.

Then I broke out in pimples! Then my researching stumbled onto why everybody gets acne.

Then being taught the practice and benefits of Holistic Counselling, I decided to learn NLP and moved on to Hypnotherapy in Quit Cigarettes and Reach Your Ideal Weight.

Action points to beat adrenal fatigue Are you teary, stressed and exhausted, experiencing brain fog and no energy? Tired but can’t seem to sleep? Do you feel run down, and fall ill with colds and various bugs? You may have adrenal fatigue.

drenal fatigue occurs as a result of prolonged stress over a long period of time. Do we have a future worth planning for?

PLANNING PRIORITY 5 - Plan for the growth of housing that creates a diverse range of housing types and encourages housing that is sustainable, liveable, accessible and affordable.

ACTION? - Aged care, seniors living and key worker housing (or boarding house) provisions are critical to maintaining social equity and a balanced community, but what can be done to diffuse ‘NIMBY’ attitudes where a sense of entitlement seems to take priority?

"Engage, collaborate and educate the local community" PLANNING PRIORITY 12 - Adapt to the changing climate by building resilience.

A

re there any other TVO readers who share my concerns for this critical time we are living through - as different agendas on the global, national and local scenes are pointing towards the urgent need for turning points? The Climate Emergency Strike will have passed by the time you are reading this, but the urgency for real action has not. If you feel motivated to do something, the Lane Cove Council’s Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement is still on exhibition until October 17 2019, when any submissions on this important exercise are due.

Both Council and its staff should be commended for their efforts in putting the DLSPS together – but unfortunately there is much work to do in direct action rather than high level principles and rhetoric.

The aim is to align our local values and aspirations with longer term plans including the Greater Sydney Regional Plan and North District Plan and create a ‘line of sight’ between the regional and local planning frameworks.

The Planning Themes and Priorities are based on the Metropolis of Three Cities Plan developed by the Greater Sydney Commission, and cover Infrastructure, Liveability, Productivity, Sustainability and Implementation, with the actions proposed intended to translate “the current visions and strategies expressed in the Community Strategic Plan and related actions in the Delivery Program into specific land use planning priorities and actions”.

Performance indicators will monitor progress and the LSPS is set to be reviewed in a seven-year cycle, so what we aim for now needs to have real foresight. I am going to focus on just three that may inspire you: PLANNING PRIORITY 1 - Provide, maintain and upgrade infrastructure to meet changing community needs and future growth.

ACTION? - The Canopy has around 500 car spaces, so how will this impact on local traffic and environmental amenity while providing much needed quality open space?

ACTION? - Can a design quality review system in architecture and urban development help to reduce reliance on building and construction that accounts for nearly 40 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions?

Architects Declare Australia is focused on the urgent need for climate change action through mitigation as well as adaptation, aiming for all new projects ‘to contribute positively to mitigating climate breakdown …as well as include life cycle costing and post occupancy evaluation in their basic scope of works and minimize wasteful use of resources in architecture.’

A motion in Lane Cove Council last month sought to ‘Engage, collaborate and educate the local community on ways to become more sustainable and reduce the carbon footprint of residential dwellings and businesses'. I would encourage all Lane Cove residents interested in our district to review, consider and pursue any issues in the DLSPS that are critical in ensuring that we can have a future that is worth living.

Riverview youth leaders shine at Catholic Earthcare Student Sustainability Summit Students from Catholic secondary colleges across northern Sydney took up Pope Francis’ call in ‘Laudato Si’ to "treat God’s creation with respect" during a Catholic Earthcare summit at Santa Sabina College, Strathfield in late August.

The Catholic Earthcare Australia Student Sustainability Summit heard from Monte student Sophia Skarparis on her journey to get us single use plastic bag free in NSW.

Catholic Earthcare Director Sue Martin said it was an inspirational day with students hearing from a range of speakers and taking part in workshops to promote a more sustainable way of living, in line Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, 'Laudato Si’.

The next stage is for students to take up leadership on the issue at a local level, wherever they live or study. One act of leadership was demonstrated when Catholic Earthcare Youth Leaders assisted the North Sydney parish as they held a climate emergency forum in early September.

Sophia shared that we all can make a difference if we see earth injustice taking place. It may be a long road!

The summit – designed, led and delivered by students, for students – included Thomas Sheridan from St Ignatius’ College Riverview. Thomas came together with 15 other youth leaders to run the day and will take on an environmental leadership role within Riverview in 2020.

“Students have many of the answers and made more than 100 commitments for change and acts of leadership around care of our common home. They are an important voice during this time where we are in a climate emergency,” Mrs Martin said.

I was re-elected as Mayor at the last Council Meeting and will continue to be a very proud representative for Lane Cove. I welcome the new Deputy Mayor, Clr Daniel Strassberg.

At that Meeting, Council committed to new measures to improve our resilience to climate change. We will continue to reduce energy usage in Council buildings, to provide the very best recycling options for residents and to offer grants for community sustainability initiatives. We plan to increase our tree canopy and reduce water usage.

Recent new initiatives include a ‘return-and-earn’ reverse vending machine to be installed in the Little St carpark.

Meanwhile we are working with businesses to implement an eco-bag program for a trial period to further reduce plastic bag usage in Lane Cove.

Last month we celebrated our community with the wonderful Lane Cove Festival. This month I’ll be looking forward to the Lane Cove Fair, Sunday 13 October. It’s also time for the annual NSW Local Government Conference where councillors come together to share ideas and debate issues that shape the way we are governed.

During October and into November, many of us will be thinking of HSC students as they commence their exams. My best wishes to them all. Lane Cove Library provides a valued meeting place for students and supports them with a number of events in the lead-up to the exams. You can read more below about an exciting new service the Library is offering. If you like deliver-to-your-door services, check it out!

Azalea Rejuvenation Complete Lane Cove’s azalea rejuvenation project which included the planting of more than 600 azaleas along Epping Road, was officially opened on Friday 13 September. The rejuvenation was borne from community requests for the restoration of the iconic display of azaleas on Epping Road reconfigured during construction of the Lane Cove Tunnel. Council’s restoration was brought forward by funding from the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund. Other works in the project included the repair of retaining walls, planting of native

ground covering plants and installation of irrigation. The azaleas were sourced entirely from cuttings taken from original azaleas on Epping Road.

These were propagated at Council’s Community Nursery.

Library To Your Door

Council has this month launched Library To Your Door – a home delivery service for time-poor Lane Cove residents. Library borrowers will be able to reserve items via the online catalogue and opt to have them delivered for a small fee. 20 new car spaces were created at Blackman Park last month bringing the total number of car spaces to 250.

New dog park for Lane Cove: Following recent community consultation, a new fenced offleash dog park will be created at Turrumburra Park, Lane Cove.

Works will include installation of new seating and a drinking station with a bubbler. The unfenced area will also be upgraded with new trees, new seating and maintenance of the park’s historic steam roller. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of this year. As a result of the same community consultation, play equipment will be upgraded in the nearby park on Finlayson Street by mid-2020.

It was my pleasure recently to confer Australian Citizenship on 13 members of the Hunters Hill community. Our newest Australians were from a diverse range of nations including China, India, Indonesia, Montenegro, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America. The guests of Honour for the evening were Hunters Hill 2019 Young Citizen of the Year Sylvie Stannage, and Hunter’s Hill Citizen of the Year Peter Astridge OAM. I feel privileged to be a part of the final step in becoming Australian citizens. Welcome to our Australian family.

Each year Hunters Hill Le Vesinet Committee conducts a very successful student exchange program with Le Vesinet, France. Each Christmas holidays, our students visit spend six weeks there. The students are hosted by a family and matched with their host student as closely as possible in age and interests. The exchange is organised in conjunction with the Le Vésinet Comité de Jumelages.

In July/August each year, the hospitality is reciprocated, with French students visiting Sydney for approximately six weeks. The first three weeks of their stay are spent on holidays with their host family, and in the latter weeks, at school with their host student or on excursions organised by the committee.

If you have a secondary student in your family that is interested in participating, an Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 23 October 2019 at 7.00 pm at the Hunters Hill Council, Alexandra Street, Hunters Hill.

Artarmon Public School has been awarded $75,000 for a new playground, on the back of huge developments to cater to the rapidly growing population within the Artarmon community.

The students finally have a generous playground space and equipment to support their physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs.

Hunters Hill High School has received $50,000 to build shade sails. This project will allow them to stage carnivals and events on the school oval and be sun safe. The shade sails will double as cooling for the adjacent building, which does not have air conditioning – double win and costeffective!

Finally, our new Use it or Lose it?

Maximising Your Brain Health Centre has received $172,280 to create a multipurpose clinic in Henley. This centre will provide free memory assessments and advice to boost older Australians’ memory function.

Individuals will receive an estimate of their cognitive function and be screened for dementia.

These three brilliant initiatives are made available by our Liberal National Government's superb management of the NSW economy. This is giving us the opportunity to invest back into our community to build a better tomorrow.

In other news, The Lane Cove Rotary Fair and Sustainability Lane is on October 13. This much-loved event will have entertainment, rides, live music, food and fantastic market stalls.

Congratulations to the Hunters Hill Rugby Club, the ‘Hillies’, who have had an exceptional season having come second in the Suburban Rugby Club Championships with all four of the Senior Men’s grades contesting the Grand Finals. Congratulations also go to the Fourth and Second Grade teams who took out their premierships with the First and Third Grade teams going down in very tough deciders.

I want to particularly acknowledge the Hunters Hill Women’s Rugby team, who were crowned second division champions – an amazing achievement.

The jury’s out A recently completed stint of jury duty had me marvelling at the scale of the magnificent Mark Foyes building, now converted into the Downing Centre courthouse complex. By Liz Foster.

All the original departments remain embedded and preserved on the yellow ceramic façade for all time. And almost all of them are now completely defunct. Laces, Millinery, Silks.

Mourning! (when a simple black suit just won’t cut it).

There was a whole department dedicated to Gloves which is mind boggling, not to mention Corsets which simply don’t exist anymore unless you’re into Victorian re-enactments.

Mind you a mourning department seems quite apt. There’s no place there for frivolity or lightness. After a four-week case, my early small thrill of civic responsibility soon gave way to something akin to donning Frodo’s ring instead of my juror lanyard.

There was a case in 1994 where jurors reached their guilty verdict with a little help from a Ouija board, back in the day when overnight hotel stays were enforced. It was a protracted murder trial which funnily enough was dismissed once their antics got out.

Apparently it’s a mistake to be too specific (‘please tell us the name of the murderer’), but generalities are okay. You can pray to God to give you strength in reaching the right verdict, but you can’t say ‘Did Harry do it?’

Luckily, they’ve dispensed with the overnighters, as enforced time away from families can tip jurors into agreeing just to get the hell out of there, let alone any funny business connecting with the Other Side.

I have a certain sympathy for them. There was no escaping the high stakes once we started deliberating. And there’s nowhere to go for light relief - no table tennis table, or breakout room. Our phones are taken away and we’re basically placed in lockdown. It was tempting to take up smoking since the outdoor balcony was the only communal area we were allowed into.

The days passed and tension mounted. The courtroom was about five degrees colder than our jury room, so we all donned coats and scarves when trooping in to hear evidence. One time a fellow juror grabbed what she thought was a blanket on the way into court. We discovered halfway there she’d picked up a couple of prayer mats. For some reason it set us all off and we had to work hard to compose our faces into sombreness appropriate for the gravitas of a courtroom.

I was hoping to pop all this into the feedback section of the juror survey at the end. But it only covered banalities like food and whether our court officer was helpful or not. Guess I’ll have to forward a few dozen copies of TVO to the Downing Centre.

I’m sure this column will provide some welcome light relief.

Book of Colours

By Jacqui Serafim Shell is an ambitious historical novel set against the backdrop of Australia in the 1960s at a pivotal point in our history when conscription for the Vietnam War was introduced and the Sydney Opera House was under construction. Through the narrative of the central characters Olsson explores the nature of art, love and loss, womanhood and nationhood.

Pearl Keogh is a driven, intelligent journalist relegated to writing for the Womens’ Pages of the newspaper after publicly protesting against Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. She objects to the war on principle but there is also a painful, personal motivation as she fears for her long lost brothers who are both at risk of being drafted. Pearl was left to care for her siblings at the tender age of 14 when her mother died and her father turned to alcohol. Her enduring guilt at being unable to keep her family together is at the core of her pain. Through Pearl, Olsson explores the female frustration with the limitations and inequality experienced by women in every aspect of life – work, home, relationships – and the painful price of female expectations.

Axel Lindquist is a talented young Swedish artist working in glass. He is haunted by the pain of the loss of his father at the age of 10 and is searching to fill the void. His fascination with Jørn Utzon, the Opera House’s architect, results in his application to come to Australia and create some pieces for the interior of the Opera House. Axel’s artistic sensitivity, his sadness and his loneliness seep through the narrative and our hearts bleed for his suffering soul. As an outsider and a Scandinavian, with a cultural background more aligned with that of Utzon, Axel provides an observer’s voice to the Australian condition. Australia’s ambiguous relationship with the emerging Opera House – the seesawing pride and cultural cringe – and the shameful treatment of its brilliant architect, is revealed by Olsson’s perfect prose.

“As if they were ashamed of a building that might reveal them, the soaring shapes of their dreams, the true interior of their hearts. As if they were afraid of grandeur.”

Despite its complex themes and sweeping scope this is a poignant, lyrical novel. It delves deeply into the hearts and minds of its central characters, gently but persistently unearthing their past and their pain. As the events of the novel throw these two young people together, their stories are revealed to us as they reveal themselves to each other.

Olsson tenderly peels back the layers of memories that have guided Pearl and Axel to their current selves. The threat of the troop ships in the harbour and construction of the Opera House provide a superb backdrop for their narratives. The steel frame of the Opera House reaching out from the land over the water is the perfect metaphor for an adolescent Australia weakening its ties with Britain, forging a relationship with the USA and following it blindly into the Vietnam War. HUNTERS HILL SHOWCASES YOUNG IN ART EXHIBITION

Winners revealed: Municipality of Lane Cove 56th Art Award Exhibition Local artist Pamela Fairburn has been awarded the Lane Cove Council Art Prize for her work, The Old Convento. Pamela received the prize from Mayor of Lane Cove Pam Palmer at an event that attracted more than 150 people.

Organisers of the annual Hunters Hill Art Exhibition have launched their Our Young in Art offshoot. It is a combined exhibition and competition to showcase the younger community, with artwork submitted from all of the schools in Hunters Hill. Its aim is to encourage and celebrate the pursuit of the arts in younger people.

Participating schools are as follows: St Joseph’s College, Villa Maria Parish School, Riverside Girls High School, Gladesville Public School, Boronia Park Public School, Marist Sisters College, Hunters Hill High School and Hunters Hill Public School.

The winner of this year’s Hyecorp Property Group Prize went to Judy Smith for her piece Gently Breaks the Day. Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios explores mental wellbeing Different Shades of Light is a project comprising creative workshops that culminate in an exhibition linking art and mental health.

record number of artists have signed up for Greenwich Village Arts Trail as the ever-popular event enters its sixth year. A fabulous collection of 29 artists and craftsmen, from Archibald finalists and awardwinning professionals to talented first timers and skilled home hobbyists, will be displaying their art at various studios, shops and garages across the idyllic harbour-side suburb of Greenwich. Susan Rothwell is one of the well-established painters in the artists’ group, having been an Archibald Prize finalist and hung in many galleries and exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne over her decades of painting. As a renowned architect with a successful career, Rothwell now delights in donating all the proceeds from her Arts Trail sales to the charity “Youth in Search”.

Another benevolent artist is Petrina Slaytor, a long-term Greenwich resident who has potted from her garage studio for over 40 years. For months leading up to the November event, Slaytor works tirelessly to fill her shelves and front garden with her beautiful ceramic bowls, plates, and garden ornaments. But no matter how hard she works, demand outstrips supply for her sought-after wares - and long before the end of the Arts Trail weekend, Slaytor’s shelves will be bare and her coffers filled with aid for Mahboba’s Promise, an Afghan’s women charity.

The trail also showcases newcomers.

Come 10am Saturday November 2, newbie Richard Towell will be putting out his shingle for the very first time.

When he moved to Greenwich four years ago, Towell was blown away by the quality and success of the annual open studio event and has now decided to become a participant instead of a visitor. As a long-time hobbyist, Towell is looking forward to opening his garage door for his inaugural public viewing of his breathtaking landscape photographs.

The brainchild of registered art therapist and artist Anne Buckingham, Different Shades explores the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

The exhibition is co-curated by Rachael Kiang, manager and curator, and features creative input from Anne and emerging artist Natalie Tso. It will run during this month (October). The project supported by Lane Cove Council.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED With a team of nearly 400 volunteers, Sydney Community Services provides a range of services to support over 500 older residents and people living with a disability living in our local community.

We are currently looking for volunteers in the following areas:

Suspicious circumstances soon point to the death being a murder.

If you can spare a few hours, twice a month on a Monday morning, you can make a huge difference in an older person’s life.

We currently have openings in our Linen Service Team. Volunteers can work two Monday mornings a month, or offer back up volunteering as needed.

What is Community? It’s about people getting together with common values to achieve a common purpose. Here on the lower north shore we are blessed with a number of events which show our local commitment to the community including the Lane Cove Fun Run, the Lane Cove Rotary Fair (Sydney 13th October), The River Festival, The Hunters Hill Food and Wine Festival in May and the Granny Smith Festival (Sydney 20th October).

for local people but only made possible through the willingness of almost 400 local people who volunteer their time to help others, whether it be by delivering Meals on Wheels, making peoples beds with clean linen, making gardens safer or visiting older residents who otherwise wouldn’t have any visitors. If you have a few hours to spare and want to help others in the local community just contact us and we can see whether we have something you might want to do.

Last month Sydney Community Services entered three teams in the Lane Cove Fun Run. It was a wonderful morning with over 1400 Lane Cove locals taking part in 2 or 5 kilometres runs, walks (or dawdles). Whole families participated, including dogs, many of whom were in fancy dress, yes even the dogs.

Sydney Community Services was one of two local organisations to share in some of the profits from the run. A huge thanks to St Michaels Public School for organising the event which has joined several others in the Lane Cove calendar.

We also have lots of activities based in our Lane Cove and Hunters Hill offices including lunches, bus outings, book club and movies. We find that often when people come along they discover old friends they have lost touch with.

Just last month Lane Cove lost one of the well known pillars of the community. Kel O’Grady was the father of eight children and numerous grand and great grandchildren. Well known as a local builder, he was a great family figure in the community and in his church. For many years Kel was the mainstay of the volunteer medical transport service provided from Lane Cove Community Aid (now known as Sydney Community Services).

As we move into October our thoughts have already turned to Christmas plans, some of the shops are already stocking tinsel, decorations and bonbons. We have worked out when to hold our Christmas celebrations when we are closing the office and what preparations we need to make. I’m sure many families have even started talking about dates, menus and gifts. Spare a thought for locals who face a lonely Christmas and remember that not all of us have families and loved ones around. Chat to your neighbours and if you are concerned about them being lonely or needing help ask them to contact us or one of the other local organisations who might be able to help.
