Lane Cove has wonderful community spirit and it’s celebrated in the Lane Cove Festival all this month. It will engage and reflect locals’ varied interests, tastes and talents, expertise and engaging passions in its program of music, workshops, films, exhibitions, talks, walks and sporting events.

Speaking of fantastic community, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on The Village Observer magazine and meeting many of you through the five editions I’ve edited. This community offers a wealth of interesting topics and people – thank you to all who contribute their news and milestones. Please keep in touch - TVO loves celebrating with you.

However, Sydney Community Services has new projects on the agenda and, in my communications role for SCS, more focus is needed to support new initiatives. It’s not without sadness that I’m handing TVO reigns to Nicola Riches, a long-time journalist, editor and author who has lived in the area for the past six years. Nicola started out on music press in the UK. She is married with two young sons, avid Aussie cricket players and supporters. I’m sure you will get on famously.

Before I go I must ask - where are all the young photographers whose phones/cameras are an extension of their hands? We expected a deluge of photos for page 5, our ‘Aspects’ photo, especially when we’re happy to pay amateurs a $50 ‘fee’, but photos have been thin on the ground! The photo can be a ‘moment’ in the life of this fantastic area around Lane Cove and Hunters Hill (see exact readership area at left below contents). A photographed moment doesn’t have to be highly unusual, it can be an image of one of the everyday things that are typical of the good life here. What about a photo you’ve taken on Father’s Day? Ryde’s zero litter an Australian first The City of Ryde is the first council in Australia to adopt a target of zero litter into rivers for 2030, which means plenty of new initiatives to ensure no pollutants are discharged into any of Ryde’s waterways – and from there, to the ocean.

Reversal of shocking council bill A NSW Government decision last month to reverse a sudden, huge hike in emergency services levies on councils and ratepayers will be a relief to all.

The policy reversal will see State Government pay what was to be an initial increase of almost $14 million in emergency services levies paid by councils. A transition to increased levies is still to be worked out.

With virtually no notice from NSW Government, council contributions were about to soar to cover extension of workers' compensation for volunteer and career firefighters diagnosed with any of about a dozen work-related cancers.

“A Zero Litter to River target in the City of Ryde will stop more than 1,500 tonnes of gross pollutants from the Ryde area entering downstream waterways such as the Lane Cover and Parramatta Rivers,” said City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale.

“It will help us achieve our goal to make the Parramatta River swimmable again – with the assistance of the Parramatta River Catchment Group,” he said.

Actions to achieve the target will include: • Rectification of selected existing stormwater treatment assets • Installation of new stormwater treatment assets • Appropriate management of new and existing stormwater treatment assets • Identify funding to activate and continue the initiatives City of Ryde and many other councils have been hearing from underground stormwater infrastructure company, Ocean Protect, whose co-founder Jeremy Brown believes oceans are in crisis, with plastics a big part of the problem.

Other pollutants include sediments, heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorous and cigarette butts, all from stormwater runoff. Ocean Protect has worked for two decades on design, installation and maintenance of stormwater treatment assets and infrastructure and has been increasingly disturbed by the amount of rubbish clogging up both oceans and infrastructure.

Plastic, equal to the contents of one garbage truck dumped into the ocean every minute, goes into the ocean from Australian waterways, adding up to more than 8m tonnes p.a. Four-fifths of this comes from land-based sources through drains, into local waterways then oceans via stormwater runoff.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, India is set to impose a nationwide ban on plastic bags, cups and straws in its most sweeping move to stamp out singleuse plastics from cities and villages that rank among the world’s most polluted.

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President, Linda Scott, said the news followed months of lobbying by LGNSW and councils across the State and was a clear indication that “the NSW Government was genuinely committed to an equal partnership with local government”.

“Local government strongly supports fairer workers’ compensation for paid and volunteer fire fighters,” Clr Scott said. “In many areas, especially in regional NSW, mayors, councillors and council staff are core volunteers making up our State’s rural fire brigades.”

At the moment, councils contribute 11.7 % of the emergency services budget in NSW, through council rates and insurance premiums.

The first councils knew of an increase was May when they opened a bill for 2019-20 from Revenue NSW too see annual levy hikes of up to $220,000 per council – up between 11% and 25%. The increase for Lane Cove was to be $80,000 for the year; some of the hardest-hit councils are already struggling to support communities through drought, and were simply unable to pay an increase.

LGA NSW expects State and local government will develop a “fair and realistic transition process” towards fully funded workers’ compensation for NSW firefighters and their families.

Please explain!

The redevelopment of St Leonards South (SLS) was yet again addressed during a public forum at a Lane Cove Council meeting last month, with 20 local residents contributing to the debate. Also on the table was discussion around the Council’s Local Strategic Planning Statement.

Following the Indepenent Planning Commission (IPC) advice against Council’s SLS plan mid-year, the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment would be expecting Council to review its proposal for the site.

Council is instead asking the Department to handle the response to IPC, starting with a workshop for councillors, staff and community, to discuss outcomes of IPC advice; for the Department itself to deliver its own findings; to give Council an outline of the Department’s vision of a revised planning framework and infrastructure plan for SLS; and for it to recommend a process for Council’s review of its plan.

While happy to participate in the process, Council found IPC’s advice on SLS so general as to be unclear and is asking the Department to ‘please explain’ – that is, to interpret the IPC’s advice and to guide Council on its role in reviewing SLS.

“The IPC came to its conclusions but wasn’t specific about what would be the right height, scale or enough open space.

Unfortunately their advice was not in metrics that we can follow,” said Craig Wrightson, Council’s General Manager.

“We’re asking the Department to handle the response and tell us definitively what is required.”

Council believes its SLS plan complies with the Department’s relevant principles, exceeds total open space requirements, and that the scale fits comfortably within the larger St Leonards and Crows Nest Draft 2036 Plan.

“It’s unusual and confusing that the Department endorsed the plan for exhibition and then inserted it into Department’s St Leonards and Crows Nest Draft 2036 Plan but then referred it to the IPC which has advised against it.”

did not fit the design principles of the wider St Leonards Crows Nest 2036 Draft Plan; that due to its scale SLS would be ‘overdevelopment’ and the area did not require rezoning to meet Greater Sydney Commission housing targets. However IPC advice on housing targets and therefore rezoning is based on five-year 2016-2021 housing targets – somewhat shorter than 10-year goals in Council’s sights.

COUNCIL IS ALSO ASKING THE DEPARTMENT TO CONSIDER: ● reducing Lane Cove LGA’s growth target of 41% to 52,000 people by 2036 to align with neighbouring councils such as Mosman 6%, Hunters Hill 9%, rather than its bigger neighbours – North Sydney 27%, Willoughby 21%, and Ryde 45%. ● the Department itself contributing funds through NSW’s regional open space fund to pay for more open space in SLS, given that Council’s plan’s proposed contributions through increased developers’ levies per unit for SLS have already come to $30m above previous levy caps. ● to look carefully at aspects of the plan – which Council believes are strongly in the plan’s favour – including: overshadowing, CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 >

Join the march or show your solidarity with seniors by wearing purple, as seniors will on the day

I am visible ‘I am visible’ will be the message of senior citizens marching in Lane Cove on October 24 to raise awareness of older people, their experience, knowledge and roles in society now and over the years. Yet they are often made to feel invisible today.

The march was the idea of Cate Turner, a member of the Agefriendly Committee which advises Lane Cove Council on integrating age-friendliness into its work.

“The committee was talking about how to raise awareness of older people; I said ‘Let them see us – on a march’,” said 90 year-old Cate Turner who is active on this committee as well as the Older Women’s Network, and the Lions Club, among other things.

And yet older people have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

They built our roads, buildings and businesses, dreamt up the innovations of their time and still prop up the economy today by saving their children’s and government coffers when they work as carers for grandchildren, spouses or other family needing support – and by volunteering in myriad ways.

Ms Turner believes Australia is not “madly good” with older people, saying we tend to “shut them away”.

“The march is a fun way to draw attention to something important” said Lane Cove Council’s Community Services Manager Cate Sinclair who is also on the Age-friendly Committee.

Ms Sinclair said that if society wasn’t ageist, Council would not need an Age-friendly Committee and praised the group for its contributions to the Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove 2018-2023.

“It’s the second Council age-friendly strategy and the Age-friendly Committee has done a fantastic job helping make it a whole-ofCouncil approach, similar to our disability inclusion plan.”

People marching will hand out information about ageism, its symptoms and ways it manifests. The information will challenge the public to acknowledge if they are ageist, too.

Marching seniors will also boost their visibility by wearing something purple when they step out on October 24, following International Day of Older People, October 1, and just ahead of Grandparents’ Day, Sunday October 27. They’ll draw even more attention when the Older Women’s Network’s theatrical troupe, ‘Feisty Women of Oz’, breaks out from the march into a satirical performance in the plaza bandstand.

“How often do older people recount that, when they go out with someone younger such as a son or daughter, whoever they are talking with speaks only to the younger generation? As for [older people] knowing anything or having an opinion, that’s never considered,” said Ms Turner.

Council is ready to work with the NSW Government Architect as advised, but is also requesting that the NSW Chief Planner and the Greater Sydney Commission’s Dr Deborah Dearing, who is District Commissioner, North and Eastern City, also be part of the review process.

LOCAL PLANNING STATEMENT Council is due to put its draft Local Strategic Planning Statement on exhibition for community consultation by October, and finalise it by end March. It will write to the Department and to the Greater Sydney Commission asking for an extension to complete its DLSPS and housing strategy because of the review of the SLS plan.

Council voted against an amendment to specifically seek community feedback on inclusion of SLS plan within its exhibited draft Local Strategic Plan Statement, but it expects the community will suggest generic ideas of where units could be built.

“The Mowbray precinct is exhausted and we don’t have any other area that would suit higher density to meet long-term targets,” said Mr Wrightson.

Council believes that its housing strategy will have to include higher density housing in the SLS area in some form.

Sydney Water fined for sewage spill The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Sydney Water Corporation $30,000 after 12,000 litres of raw sewage was discharged into the Lane Cove River late last year.

The discharge from Northwood Sewage Pumping Station happened at Woodford Bay between Longueville and Greenwich on 23 and 24 December 2018. EPA Regional Director Metropolitan, Giselle Howard, said the discharge from a pumping station during dry weather breached Sydney Water’s environment protection licence and the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997.

“The EPA alleges that this incident happened because of a failure

by Sydney Water to prioritise the repair of backup pump systems, resulting in sewage overflowing for a period of about 25 hours.

Ms Howard said that on becoming aware of the incident, Sydney Water took immediate action to get the pumping station back online.

“Untreated sewage can pose a risk to human health and have significant environmental impacts on waterways and land,” Ms Howard said.

“This part of the river is close to schools and homes and is also a popular recreational area.”

Anyone who watched David Attenborough’s documentary Climate Change: The Facts on the ABC last month would have witnessed the effects of climate change playing out across our country and the globe. While there are still some naysayers, the imperative to act is clear. There are great local Lane Cove local initiatives such as Sydney Edible Garden Trail and Repair Café workshops, both established by Lane Cove Resident of the Year, Bridget Kennedy. These small, local community steps in recycling, reusing and reducing waste, are a move towards the bigger result of lowering our living footprint and creating social connections.

Setting such bad examples in private industry has lowered rather than raised the bar.

What attracted you to setting up business in Lane Cove?

I owned a salon in Chatswood for six years and, when I needed new premises, my mother suggested it could be good to buy a going concern and take my clients with me. It was developed by NASA to grow plants for food in space. Everyone at NASA working with plants under the LED lights noticed their skin improving and that minor abrasions healed surprisingly quickly. It was even noticeable on the arms of people who wore shortsleeves!

What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I love the people.

You can engage at many levels and contribute to people’s lives by listening to them and understanding them ... so I help them feel great on the inside too – that’s why we’re called ‘therapist’.

I used to work as a paralegal but had always been interested in skincare and love looking after people’s skin to help them look as good as they possibly can.

Purple bins for a blue ocean Coming soon to a venue near you … big purple Otto bins where you recycle drink containers. They’ll be barcoded to direct funds to a community group, fundraiser, school or other host of the site. If it’s at a public park, Council will allocate funds to a worthy group.

The service is from social enterprise Citizen Blue – as in plastic-free, blue ocean – which will recycle the waste at its Five Dock depot and handle payments.

The arrangement with Council means locals will soon return and earn although Council’s initial plan to install receptacles from recycler TOMRA has not yet come to fruition. That’s because it’s hard to find sites that ticks all TOMRA’s boxes – the first being space as TOMRA receptacles “are like shipping containers”, says Cr Andrew Zbik who developed the arrangement.

“Council has been finding and suggesting sites to TOMRA but haven’t found one suitable,” says Cr Zbik. “Sites have to be big and prominent, have easy truck access but not within 20 metres of residences, and need electricity. So the criteria isn’t easily met.”

TOMRA operates NSW Government’s Return and Earn scheme. Its machines repay people for returning bottles with a retail voucher or an e-voucher to be redeemed as cash or used at Woolworths or Coles. Or you can choose to donate to one of the not-for-profits listed on the machine. The closest TOMRA sites to Lane Cove are Chatswood, Taronga Zoo and North Ryde.

Cr Zbik believes Council will find sites for purple bins from Citizen Blue before it finds sites for TOMRA machines, and later on, the two systems will run parallel and complement each other.

ELECTRONIC WASTE – LOCAL ALTERNATIVES Recycling bins in Coles and Woolworths for small electronic waste items (as well as batteries, light bulbs, ink cartridges, phones) are often very full of larger electronic rubbish. This is causing problems for MRI which collects and processes the waste and for LCSAG, whose volunteers arranged the bins and monitor them. Please take larger e-waste to the Northern Sydney Community Recycling Centre, 8 Waltham Street, Artarmon. It’s a clean, well-organised facility with friendly staff who’ll help with bulky items. Check online or call them on 9936 8100 for opening times and a full list of items accepted.

Gardening for wellbeing The Botanic Gardens Community Greening team and Sydney Community Services (SCS) volunteer gardeners collaborated in winter to rejuvenate community gardens for social housing residents in Hunters Hill.

Two wonderfully industrious days saw two teams replace decrepit garden beds that produced fruit, vegies, herbs and flowers for Meyers Ave residents for many years.

Meyers Ave gardeners now tend crops in nine new, raised Bluescope steel garden beds generously supplied by the Royal Botanic Gardens. Huge improvements by SCS volunteers are giving a similar boost to residents’ wellbeing.

SCS volunteers, from 28 to 80 years-old, are also involved in SCS garden maintenance for elderly residents in the lower North Shore. Each experiences a sense of fulfilment and joy when helping others, and Meyers Ave residents were extremely appreciative of rejuvenation of their garden.

Resident Saeideh Badel said, “When I put my hands in soil I remember where I came from… it’s a spiritual thing for me” as she plants her Persian basil, mint, coriander and vegetables.

Marzieh Salebi, another Meyers Ave resident, gets busy in the garden fives time a week to successfully produce most of the vegies used in her kitchen.

As well as clients’ appreciation, SCS volunteer gardeners enjoy working outdoors in fresh air, getting exercise and the companionship of a friendly team. Teams go out with a supervising horticulturist to clients’ gardens from Tuesday to Friday mornings.

Birrahlee celebrates generations of preschoolers Birrahlee is celebrating 60 years of helping children step out of toddler trainers into their school shoes at its open day on September 14.

In an area where high-rise rules, Birrahlee kids are free to run, roam and explore landscaped, bushland settings on land allocated by Lane Cove Council in 1959.

Back then, mothers were often unpaid teachers’ assistants, doing anything from wheeling out the morning tea on trolleys, to washing up after lunch. The ‘milk mothers’ are gone but Birrahlee is still creating community connections, according to centre director Kate Damo.

The connections are seen in the number of former students who now send their children to the centre.

Current parent and former pupil, Kurt Mueller, said he sends his son Rhys to Birrahlee because of the teachers’ focus on individual children.

“The amount of time they give each child is amazing,” Mr Mueller said. “They know exactly who Rhys is and how his day has gone.”

Birrahlee was created in the 1950s when the Congregational Play Centre in Longueville and Lane Cove Centre for Youth joined forces and petitioned Council for land plus a loan. The centre was not for profit and run by a parent committee, and it still is.

When hearing aids fail Hearing aids can sound terrible if not calibrated accurately.

However with a bit of maintenance, the same terrible-sounding hearing aids might can have the potential to work better.

EarlyEd celebrates 40 years of milestones

supported all children with disability, helping them achieve their potential and training parents to support their development.

Later EarlyEd settled in North Sydney with the help of North Sydney Council and soon expanded to Western Sydney too.

More than 1,000 Lane Cove area families have been supported by EarlyEd – formerly Early Education – and all are invited to get in touch to celebrate its 40th birthday in mid-September.

Those who get in touch, including clients, educators, volunteers or government, will be invited to events September 15-19 and to share their stories, milestones and achievements. There will be an open day on September 19 between 1-4 pm at 3 Cunningham St, North Sydney.

As EarlyEd gets ready to party, it’s reaching out to more than 10,000 children with disabilities and their families from across northern and western Sydney who have relied on its services. Children mostly started early intervention as babies or toddlers, probably when their families first received a diagnosed disability. Others started when parents became worried about their child’s development.

With its northern base at North Sydney, EarlyEd has been accessible to Lane

EarlyEd’s services now include supporting children’s transitions to school plus ongoing support for schoolaged children as well as capacity building the wider community to support the inclusion of children with disabilities or developmental delays.

Local specialist educators wanted to get services to children when they first needed it and set up in Cremorne for children with an intellectual disability.

5) Physical affection: Physical touch provides feelings of connection and safety. Holding hands, kissing, hugging and intimacy are of utmost importance for people who experience love and validation through physical closeness.

Try this exercise with your partner: Identify and discuss your two main love languages and guess their top two love languages. Tell each other why they are your main love languages and what makes you feel loved. Consciously practise your partner’s primary two love languages. Making an effort in the areas that matter most to your partner can be a simple but highly effective way to strengthen a loving relationship.

HOW WE LOVE EACH OTHER – THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES In his bestseller, The Five Love Languages, Dr Gary Chapman identifies that people express their love and feel loved in five main ways and respond differently to certain modes of communicating love. It’s likely that we communicate in different love languages than our partners. People can experience love through all five methods but usually one or two hold more significance for each person.

Understanding and decoding the five love languages and identifying which most apply to you and your partner will help take the guesswork out of your expectations and needs. According to Dr Chapman, the five love languages are words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch.

3) Gifts: It doesn’t have to be a diamond ring. Gifts make you feel thought of, appreciated and loved, for example coming home with their favourite treat or flowers.

Understanding your partner's distinct emotional needs, communicating feelings clearly and openly, and maintaining intimacy are key factors in developing a strong and healthy relationship. Listening, asking questions, and acknowledging and validating your partner in the ways that they respond to best will resolve many struggles that arise from, and are exacerbated by, miscommunication.

4) Quality time: Undivided attention. No television, phones or other distractions.

If this is your love language, you feel valued when you’re the centre of your partner’s attention. Going for a walk together or going out to dinner enables you focus only on each other.

It is something you need to constantly work at by communicating your needs and how you are feeling. Trusting your partner with your feelings often leads them to open up to you too.

Always waiting for the other person to open up first can create a barrier to intimacy.

2) Acts of service: Actions speak louder than words. You feel loved or express love through thoughtful or helpful efforts – cooking a meal, doing the laundry or filling their car with petrol.

●B uild connection through ‘the three blessings’: At the end of each day, tell your partner three positive things from your day – for example you helped a colleague at work with a problem or had a funny conversation. This will encourage sharing and give insight to your individual motivations.

What could turn the sugar avalanche around?

A report by the Australian Health Policy Collaboration found last year that only half of all Australians brush their teeth twice a day – but what are the results? Advertorial by Mark Casiglia of Apple Dental.

Many people point to the difficulty in getting professional dental care as the biggest obstacle in combatting dental diseases. Yet prevention is a far better solution than treatment.

Not brushing twice daily has definitely contributed to a finding that 90% of Australians have some form of tooth decay.

The report linked smoking and drinking to poor oral health, and found that almost three quarters of all Australian children eat too much sugar, leading to more than one third of five-year-olds having decay in their baby teeth.

What can we make of these findings?

Certainly, good oral care habits are important to help us counteract the lifestyle disease we call tooth decay.

But the ultimate prevention can only be achieved by addressing our diet.

Before humans began farming and processing food around 10,000 years ago, tooth decay was extremely uncommon. Farming saw the increase in consumption of simple carbohydrates and processed food such as flour. This fed the oral bacteria their preferred

diet and actually helped decay-causing bacteria to proliferate so that our oral micro-flora changed after farming.

It is only recently that sugar - the most dentally destructive dietary component - has come into common use. Although refining sugar was first documented 8,000 years ago, it has only regularly appeared in the diet in the last 200 years, with consumption greatly increasing in the last 100 years or so since food manufacturers started adding it to their products.

Dentistry is extremely expensive for government to fund due to the high overheads. Governments should focus on community education as well as strategic measures to reduce the consumption of processed foods containing sugar. One example would be through taxing sugar. The money raised could then be diverted back into community health education initiatives, as well as the provision of medical treatments for all the various metabolic diseases also caused by sugar consumption, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

MIND over Mediterranean A 12-year study of dietary patterns in older adults in Australia showed those who followed a diet designed for brain health had a reduced risk of cognitive problems including Alzheimer’s and dementia. neuroprotective foods that protect brain health. The focus is on green leafy vegetables, whole grains, olive oil plus small amounts of red meat.

The comprehensive study followed 1,220 adults aged 60-plus for 12 years.

During this time, following the MIND diet was linked to 19% reduced odds of developing clinically diagnosed, mild cognitive impairment or dementia. In contrast, no cognitive benefit was found for adhering to the Mediterranean diet.

Led by researchers from Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), UNSW Sydney and ANU, the study reviewed the potential protective effects of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet, aka the ‘MIND’ diet. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

The MIND diet includes elements of a typical Mediterranean diet but also

HEALTHY HEART AT 50 LINKED TO LOWER DEMENTIA RISK It’s confirmed! Good cardiovascular health at age 50 is strongly associated with a lower risk of dementia later: these are the results of a remarkably comprehensive study of almost 8,000 British adults over 25 years. Dementia starts to develop 15-20 years ahead of symptoms so warding off its onset is vital – and not impossible – because cardiovascular risk factors are modifiable.

It is now certain that, for most people, lowering cardio risk will have a dual benefit – for heart and brain health.

The American Heart Association’s ‘Life’s Simple 7’ score for cardiovascular health has been put forward as a potential tool for preventing dementia as well as cardiovascular disease.To address uncertainty around that suggestion, research led by French National Institute of Health and Medical Research and University College London, examined the link between the Life’s Simple 7 cardiovascular health score at age 50 and risk of dementia over the next 25 years.

Published by The British Medical

Journal in early August, the study of cardiovascular data from ‘Whitehall II’ group of 7,899 civil servants of both sexes at age 50, also included data on social, behavioural, and biological factors for long-term health. The subjects were all free of cardiovascular disease and dementia at 50 and later dementia cases were identified using hospital, mental health services, and death registers until 2017.

Researchers found that following the Life’s Simple 7 cardiovascular health recommendations in midlife was linked with a lower dementia risk. Compared with an incidence rate of dementia of 3.2 per 1000 person years among the group with a poor cardiovascular score, those with an intermediate score had an rate of 1.8 per 1000 years, while those with an optimal score only had incidence of 1.3 per 1000 years.

Higher cardiovascular health score at age 50 was also associated with higher whole brain and grey matter volumes in MRI scans 20 years later.

And reductions in dementia risk were also evident across the continuum of the cardiovascular score, suggesting that even small improvements in cardiovascular risk factors at age 50 may reduce dementia risk in old age, say the researchers.

“Cardiovascular risk factors are modifiable, making them strategically important prevention targets. This study supports public health policies to improve cardiovascular health as early as age 50 to promote cognitive health, too” the researchers reported, while also noting that cardiovascular health at 50 can also be determined by factors earlier in life, including inequality and social and economic determinants.

Rising to longevity Sitting is the new smoking. Will they plaster office chairs with pictures of people dying from lack of movement?

That won’t be necessary if you have a standing desk which raises much more than your computer.

Standup desks can radically reduce sitting time and offer health benefits mitigating these risks. Desks range from simple, manual wind-ups where the entire desk moves up, to ones which memorise electronic settings to your favourite height positions, and Varidesk offers the gamut. The manual desktop model I’m using ProPlus 36 is surprisingly easy to adjust. This two-tier desk sits atop your existing desk, raised or lowered with just a few fingers on levers on either side. The movement is so smooth it can be done with a little pressure and without spilling a coffee sitting on one of the levels. Many models of Varidesk come with a spring-assisted lift which enables the smooth movement. Too much sitting time – commonly TV, computer or travel time – is a killer. The ‘sitting disease’ generally risks slow metabolism, back or neck pain, low energy and productivity, poor heart health and attendant problems … even bad memory and depression.

LiveScience says a Mayo Clinic analysis of nearly 50 previous studies on calories burned while sitting versus standing showed the average 65kg person who stood instead of sitting six hours a day would burn an extra 54 calories per day. Not enough to lose weight, said Mayo, but enough to stop putting additional weight on.

The AJE found health problems from sitting were so significant that the topic should be studied separately from too little exercise. The Heart Foundation agrees: even if you meet guidelines for physical exercise, it may not reduce the risks of sitting too much. Health benefits are greatest for people who sit less, AND move more. So you can’t completely excuse a lot of sedentary time by saying you ‘balance’ it by exercising regularly. And – warning – don’t cut out regular exercise if you stand for much of the day.

Varidesk promotes an active office: “splitting time 50:50 sitting to standing, will boost your physical, and mental health and memory – for a more productive, happier work day”.

It definitely helped me focus on good, ergonomic posture. And I must say I felt more energetic at the end of the day after I had stood most of the day at the Varidesk, so was far more likely to include other exercise at the end of the day. Strange but true and healthy – and that makes me happy.

Lost in translation Laveau-Harvie’s award-winning memoir The Erratics is the darkly funny story of her dysfunctional family.

At the opening of the novel, the Canadian-born author is living in Sydney and has not seen her parents for nearly 20 years. She and her sister have been “disowned and disinherited” but when her mother breaks her hip and is hospitalised, they see the opportunity to help their father and go back to the isolated ranch in Alberta, Canada, where they grew up. They are horrified to find their father half-starved and confused, and the house in an appalling state.

Their mother has always been delusional, unpredictable and cruel. As the estranged daughters visit their mother in hospital and their father at home, they set about the task of saving their father from their mother. The hospital staff treat the daughters with distrust because their narcissistic mother has charmed them with her lies. Amid this scepticism they must work together to have their mother diagnosed and committed to a psychological facility in order to save their father’s life.

Laveau-Harvie flashes back to incidents of shocking neglect and psychological abuse by her mother during their childhood. A favourite phrase of her mother’s which demonstrates her appalling use of her power against her children was, “I'll get you and you won't even know I'm doing it”. It’s clear their mother is suffering from at least one undiagnosed mental illnesses and frightening that, when children, these women were subjected to a childhood devoid of love and support. Their often absent father plays a minor role in their upbringing and is manipulated by his wife into collusion about the roles she has set for them.

As Vicki and her sister work together to take the chance to have their dangerous, delusional mother committed, we are struck by Laveau-Harvie’s wry humour amidst the terrifying blackness of the circumstances. The isolated ranch, set against the bleak Alberta countryside is a hoarder’s paradise: packed with antiques covered in dust, expired food, ancient medications, and stores of toxic chemicals. It is a frightening but appropriate setting for this story of isolation and neglect.

The Erratics won the 2019 Stella Prize – an award for the best work of fiction or non-fiction by an Australian woman. In her acceptance speech, Laveau-Harvie said of the award: “This prize rewards women who write truth – historical, political, and the truth of the heart and the soul: the truth of individuals, of each of us, and the truth of the world we live in.”

This aptly describes her own work. Laveau-Harvie’s unflinching honesty and humorous perspective provide an authentic voice for this gruelling story of her dysfunctional family.

The best lost-in-translation gaffs are those marketing-driven, cross-cultural blunders you couldn’t make up, except that someone did. So I’d love to know how things played out in Taiwan, where the Pepsi slogan ‘Come alive with the Pepsi Generation’ came out as ‘Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead’.

But my favourite has to be the Miami t-shirt maker who printed shirts for the Spanish market promoting a visit from the Pope.

They meant to say, ‘I Saw the Pope’, but instead proclaimed in Spanish, ‘I Saw the Potato’.

Pope Francis seems like a good guy, so I reckon he’d see the funny side. He’s not dissimilar to Uncle Thothori either, who called the in-laws after we left and rained compliments on us all.

Amazing how much you can convey with smiles, arm waves and a carafe or two of Greece’s finest. So much more intimate than Google Translate after all.

Career coach and Lane Cove resident, Mike Taylor and Lane Cove Council are offering free workshops to enlighten and encourage job-hunters. Targeted towards mature job-hunters rather than school leavers, Get That Job workshops have been a “real eye-opener” for some participants.

• A profile or summary tells a reader what you can do for them. Find out the key words for potential jobs and use them - particularly because resumes are now often sorted electronically on key words. Tailor your profile to a reader’s needs.

“I learned that the process of getting a job had changed dramatically since I last applied for a job – some time ago because I’d been self-employed for some years,” said Kate.

“Mike provided specific, constructive guidance which I’ve used in applications. It was also heartening to meet others who were qualified, yet found it difficult to find employment. It’s reassuring to know you’re not alone,” she said.

• Competency statements – or written descriptions of measurable work used to achieve specific objectives – are a must. What was accomplished, how you did it, what was the result.

With an extensive background in the corporate world including the last fifteen years in career management, Mike felt he had something to offer people who felt frustrated and isolated in their job search.

“Since retiring, I’ve been spending more time around Lane Cove; this brought me into contact with many people struggling with the financial and emotional impacts of unemployment,” Mike said. “I’d worked as a career consultant to people who had been retrenched. Clients were lucky in that their ex-employers paid for our services. Paying for coaching and other employment resources can be prohibitive when you aren’t earning.”

Mike saw he could be of service to his community so he contacted Council which is providing space and administrative services.

The three-and-a-half hour workshop gives insights into the process of gaining employment and how hiring staff and workplaces have changed. Participants are invited for coffee meetings after the workshop each Monday to share their experiences and gain further insights from Mike and each other.

A one-to-one meeting with Mike is also offered for personalised consultations.

• Avoid over-using pronouns, ie first or third person – they know it’s about you. Instead, try cutting back to responsibilities, actions, achievements. Make it snappy and punchy.

• Finding a job is a big job. Be organised: maintain files, a calendar or diary, a to-do list, note your follow-up calls or emails to each potential employer, etc.

• Network whenever possible! Job seekers spend most of their energy chasing advertisements and recruiters, yet the most successful avenue is networking.

• The second-most successful avenue is approaching organisations directly.

night came with a little treat and the staterooms, albeit small, were efficiently designed and perfectly cleaned. Our golf clubs were kept in style in the unoccupied Royal Suite (!) and out ready for us when needed. When not golfing we walked and cycled – we were not a sit-and-watch-thescenery group – and we were all up dancing on the last night. We took some excellent tours, notably a day trip to the Normandy beaches. I know many of you think I live the life of Riley, hopping on and off planes and ships, on one long travelling party.

Some even suggest they could be my ‘plus one’, or step in when I can’t go!

I’ve just had that stand-out experience, escorting a Trendsetter Travel group of 31 golfers on a luxury river cruise from Paris along the Seine, through Normandy and back. Let me tell you I have done the same cruise on Avalon, and another on Tauck on the Danube. Both were excellent for different reasons. I just want to share why I enjoyed Uniworld so much from my bottom floor, no balcony, stateroom.

The décor in public areas announce ‘this is a European ship’. Owner Mrs Tollman has a penchant for exuberant décor (think Versailles), with crystal chandeliers, antiques, original artworks,

plus tassels, rolled cushions, and crisp linen everywhere to channel a smart French residence (your own chateau peut-être?)

Then the food … dine in The Bistrot and you could be on a Parisienne sidewalk. There’s a table d’hote menu of typical French dishes taken to a new level of deliciousness. After dinner you might mosey along to Claude’s starry nightclub for a sophisticated cocktail, in what is actually the Club D’Esprit pool area, transformed nightly to be unrecognisable from its daytime role.

On an intimate level you can join in the fun of a superb degustation dinner with 11 of your best friends at Les Caves des Vins – our group loved it. But you didn’t have to eat small to enjoy since the chefs produced bountiful taste sensations nightly in the elegant main dining room. Did I have an unsatisfactory meal? Yes one, a mere blemish on an otherwise faultless food experience, with specialty diets also done to perfection.

Guardians of local values get together More than 200 people gathered at the Woolwich Pier Hotel in mid-winter for an evening of food, song, presentations and speeches about local community, history and heritage to celebrate the first annual Hunters Hill Day.

“Finding more effective and meaningful ways to connect people will be our challenge,” he said.

Caroline Mackaness of the Hunters Hill Trust, spoke of local heritage preserved in historic challenges fought by the Battlers of Kelly’s Bush and members of Hunters Hill Trust since 1968, and more recent moves by Gladesville Community Group for a better shopping precinct and lobbying to remediate contaminated former industrial land. Ms Mackaness called on everyone to think and act locally, to continue supporting each other or get involved now to ensure this legacy can be passed on.

These themes were extended by historian Dr Beverley Sherry who asked how it’s possible that Hunters Hill has survived so intact for so long? “People Power!” was her answer, highlighting the “world’s first ‘Green Ban’ to preserve Kelly’s Bush.

A presentation was made by Richard Quinn on behalf of the ‘Hunters Hill Locals’ to Hunters Hill Council and handed to the Mayor to mark the significance of this event in the history of the Municipality.

The date was chosen because in 2017 it was the day the Council and community won the right to continue protecting its community’s values and heritage in a legal and grassroots battle against NSW Government’s attempt to force Council amalgamations.

Lane Cove Council was in the same position, and in the same court action with Hunters Hill against the Government.

Many say that, in the five years since NSW announced amalgamations in 2012, the Government tried ‘every trick in the book’ including a ‘sham inquiry’ before time was running out with local elections looming.

The Government withdrew its amalgamation proposal on the same day the court made a decision against the proposal and in favour of councils’ independence. It was two victories in one day but Phil Jenkyn, of Hunters Hill Locals, which organised the celebration, says Hunters Hill Day doesn’t celebrate the win itself.

“The day celebrates the reasons we fought amalgamation, why we value the community, shared experiences and heritage. It’s a great day to celebrate because we retained our right to keep protecting our values, as we’ve done as guardians for 158 years since 1861,” says Mr Jenkins.

“Three-quarters of Hunters Hill is conservation area; we preserve it against bad policy and bad development.”

In his speech Mayor Mark Bennett talked of the qualities and shared values that bind a community together - values, history, challenging experiences and proximity. He paid tribute to clubs, volunteers, religions, and community groups which all support social, psychological and physical health. But he pointed to many ‘storm clouds’ faced by the area - and the world - and he drew attention to social isolation as the next public health epidemic, exacerbated by under-employment and our increasingly online lives.

An independent service consultancy will provide inventory and condition assessment for road pavements, kerb and gutter, footpaths and other road-related public infrastructure assets.

The first stage is to survey and assess the roads’ condition in early September. A highly sophisticated survey vehicle will simultaneously scan the entire road surface with m laser measuring devices and highresolution video imaging in a single pass.

The resulting data bank will provide accurate analysis and reporting on surface defects, condition scores, including sensor-measured roughness (road longitudinal profile), rutting (road cross-sectional profile) and condition of kerb and guttering. Gladesville Shopping Village place activation We are working with the owners and managers of Gladesville Shopping Village (GSV) to implement a six-month activation pilot that will encourage the community to participate and use spaces available in GVS. Research will also be undertaken by GVS to determine the shopping habits of customers and the future wishes. Initiatives include: Mertim in residence - Mertim Okalp will take residence in the centre for the six months while he paints his 50 faces of Hunters Hill exhibition. Local art students from Hunters Hill High School, St Joseph’s College, Marist Sisters and Riverside Girls High School will be invited to visit the studio as Mertim paints portraits throughout the period.

NDIS forum The NDIS is making a difference for so many Australians with a disability. While there is no doubt about the value of the scheme, the government is focused on making the NDIS more responsive to disabled Australians.

With this in mind, I invited the new Minister for NDIS, the Hon. Stuart Robert MP, to meet a group of clients, parents and local organisations at a forum in Lane Cove recently. The forum was an important opportunity for the Minister to hear from people who rely on the NDIS and also to share the work that he has done in his first 80 days as Minister and future plans.

I’ve already filled my September diary with many Lane Cove Festival events that I would like to participate in! Let me share some highlights. First up is Cameraygal Week which celebrates the depth and variety of Aboriginal history, culture and heritage with a basket weaving workshop, music and dance under the stars, guided walks and more.

The Festival also includes a full program of events with a musical focus. Always impressive is Judy Bailey’s jazz concert!

Another unique event is the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra’s special performance of a new work composed by LCYO students.

You can celebrate creativity at Gallery Lane Cove where there is always a diverse exhibition program, opening this month with the Lane Cove Art Show.

Out and about there is the annual Coffee Carnevale, a day of free activities bringing the flair of global coffee culture to Lane Cove Plaza. And to celebrate our beautiful natural environment, there’ll be a search for bush treasures(!), a variety of bushwalks and opportunities to learn more about local native plants. Now that it’s Spring, you might enjoy being more active: there’s dragon boating, kayaking, fun at the pool or on your bike. And I hope to see you at the not-to-be-missed Lane Cove Fun Run!

Of course, I’ve only mentioned a small sample of the wonderful events. During the Festival there are many opportunities to join with others in the community who have similar interests, across all age groups. Simply open your Lane Cove Festival program (printed or online) and I’m sure you will fill up your diary too!

Community Grants Presentation Council was pleased to present grant cheques to the total of $478,137 to 24 local groups at its annual Community Grants Presentation on Wednesday 7 August. These groups provide muchneeded local services and positively contribute to life in Lane Cove such as Sydney Community Services (pictured right) which received a Council grant of $254,410.

Kimberley Playground: An upgrade of the popular Kimberley Playground was completed in July.

The new play area features a slide, balance beams, spinners and two swings, including a nest swing.

Old Stories, New Latitudes – Raewyn Proctor and Natasha Daniloff This exhibition explores the concept of narrative as related to family, culture, landscape and memory. Themes of fragmentation, past and present, the immigrant experience and the creation of a new life underpin this body of work. Through the use of mixed media, works on paper and canvas, found objects, memorabilia and artefacts, Raewyn Proctor and Natasha Daniloff draw on their disparate cultural backgrounds to present a body of work that references theIR objects and stories.

The Body: Movement Light & Colour – Ann Carney Ann Carney has been working as an artist in the Lane Cove area for over 30 years. Her drawings and paintings explore the human form through colour, light and movement. She is fascinated by the use of allegory in the depiction of the body and how it has been used throughout history as a political or moral code. One of the key pieces in the exhibition depicts the story of Adam and Eve with dynamic movement and bold colour.

Ann’s version of this creation story reveals the embedded bias in the story.

Shades of light Gallery Lane Cove will run art workshops, exploring themes of mental health and wellbeing. Art therapist and artist Anne Buckingham will guide you in making your own artwork in a relaxed, supportive setting. No art experience is required.

Artworks created in these workshops will be part of an exhibition during Mental Health Month in October at Gallery Lane Cove, aimed at creating awareness of the role of art in improving mental health and wellbeing.

Fundraising dinner Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios' first fundraising dinner was a fun-filled night of art, fine dining and entertainment.

The night began with canapes, champagne and lovely jazz music by North Shore musician Michael Brady.

MC and comedian Simon Kennedy, a Lane Cove local was the star of the night, along with the artist Peter Day. A light interview between Simon and Peter shed light on the stories behind Peter's artworks in his largest solo exhibition to date, which served as the setting for the evening.

Raffle tickets were sold and a silent auction of artworks were held to raise funds for two critical projects - one to complete the fit-out of the kiln room for the organisation's Ceramics Studio and the other, a cutting-edge Sci-Fi inspired Posthuman exhibition of digital media art.

Fabric prints, stencils and monotypes Introduction and experimental workshop with Vivien Haley The workshop introduces two simple printmaking methods that can be applied to any form of art or craft where fabric and textiles are used. They can be used as a repeat pattern, placement or border print for visual art, wall hangings, soft furnishing or placement prints on clothing.

The aim is to create two or three motifs and prints encompassing these techniques and creating a natural linen piece that shows a repeat, placement or border print.

areas can ‘push’ back an area in the painting or ‘pull’ it forward. The artist is constantly balancing these forces within a work.

Line work can be introduced into a painting through the use of palette knives, ends of brushes or the rubbertipped tool that Jan used especially for this effect. Jan emphasized that it is important to work freely.

Chasing the elusive Music, writing, dance, cooking and art are all important avenues of expression. How you wish to express your creative side depends on the influences that shaped you as well as what you want to convey. Lane Cove Art Society guest artist for July, Jan Cristaudo, is an abstract artist for whom art is about capturing feelings not reality.

Jan prefers to paint her emotions and ideas through colour, line, composition and texture. As a viewer you can be drawn into an artwork without fully understanding why, especially if it is abstract. Abstract works often reflect what an artist sees in their mind’s eye and so can possess an element of mystery.

Without concrete or recognisable objects, what ingredients is the eye seeing? When travelling, Jan paints little sketches in gouache (opaque pigments).

These little gems provide the starting ‘objects’ for her abstract work back in the studio. Jan showed us several sketches of Lord Howe Island. She might only take a segment from a sketch, which is then worked up into an abstract painting.

For the July demonstration, she took segments from several sketches and married them into a composition.

Using a large brush, a square, gessoed canvas and some acrylics, she freely made marks across the whole canvas.

The brush was held at the end of its handle so the whole arm could be moved to apply the paint. She told Society members that ‘your main focus is to paint what you felt when you did the initial sketches, not what you saw’.

Colour, composition, form and texture bring the abstract work to life. First Jan used Payne’s grey, cobalt, turquoise and white. A green was mixed from yellow and ultramarine blue. Using different combinations of these colours produced variations in tone. Acrylics are often used as a base layer because they dry quicker than oils but then oils are layered on top of this base. Classico oils are Jan’s preferred brand for their luminosity and lushness. ‘Australian red gold’ is Jan’s favourite colour, especially for outback scenes. Odourless solvent is used for glazing. Glazing can harmonize a work - the artist paints a thin wash over a work or a section of it. Glazing

As Jan completed the base layer, she stated that many more layers would be worked up on top of it. You can introduce other materials such as charcoal. She used extra large charcoal sticks.

Idris Murphy, Luke Sciberras and Elisabeth Cummings are all abstract artists Jan admires. Their use of colour and multi-layered works are compelling to her eye.

Jan’s passion for abstraction was obvious.

How she approaches her art provided a fascinating insight into the world of this artist. For Armenian-American painter, Arshile Gorky, “Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes.” For the Lane Cove Art Society it was a treat to have been taken down the path of abstraction.

Bach home at last Former Lane Cove Public School student Madeleine Easton has returned home after almost 20 years forging a stellar career performing with Europe’s foremost ‘early music’ orchestras.

After studying at London’s Royal College of Music, Madeleine directed the Early Music Orchestra at the Royal Academy of Music in a five-year project performing the entire collection of Bach’s Cantatas – more than 200. Now a highly regarded specialist in Baroque music techniques, Madeleine has performed with and led prestigious ensembles including The Hanover Band, The English Baroque Soloists, The Kings Consort, the Gabrielli Consort and Florilegium and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

In 2017 Madeleine launched Bach Akademie Australia at the Garrison Church, The Rocks, Sydney with sellout concerts. This first class ensemble showcases the works of Johann Sebastian Bach – a repertoire of choral, instrumental, secular and sacred works running from a heartbreakingly beautiful solo to triumphant, full orchestral forces with glorious oratorios, passions and the towering B minor Mass.

International European stars work with Bach Akademie, giving the ensemble a unique sound. Which instrumental lessons?

The Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre is now offering a way for local parents to assess which instrument their child should take up by making available 10-minute ‘observation’ classes.

These classes give kids and their parents the opportunity to watch a 10-minute slice of a lesson across several instruments and teachers.

Firstly, this opportunity provides families with a window to observe the Suzuki/traditional methods, the teaching style and manner of the teacher and to discover how piano/violin/cello/ flute lessons are an interactive and fun experience. Secondly, it allows the teacher to illustrate what happens during lesson time and shows the parent how the tutor will interact with their child, how they engage a child in the learning process and set behavioural expectations during the lesson.

Inspired by art

New score reimagines Chaplin film Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant will come to life at the end of September with a sparkling new musical score by Nick Russoniello performed on 1920s instruments by the composer and the Golden Age Quartet.

A jewel of early silent cinema, Chaplin’s silent film The Immigrant debuted in 1917 and unfolded through a series of works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Rudy Wiedoeft and Charlie himself.

Nick has receive won major awards, including the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and the Fine Music Kruger Scholarship. He has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide, Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and as a guest performer with the Acacia Quartet, Omega Ensemble, Australian Opera Ballet Orchestra and the Australian World Orchestra.

The Golden Age Quartet is known for its highly expressive and dynamic performances of early 20th Century repertoire.

This concert features Chilean-born Australian pianist Daniel Rojas. Rojas is an award-winning composer and performer specialising in Latin and tango music and stunning improvisations at the keyboard. This year LCYO is privileged and excited to be working on a composition project inspired by artworks from the australian collection in the Art Gallery of NSW. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was the springboard for a collective composition. But, move over Mussorgsky! In April, six of the young musician-composers toured the Australian Collection in the AGNSW with two art educators. Their rich tapestry of new composition will be premiered at the concert Composer Tim Hansen brainstorming with Inspired by Art mid-September members of Lane Cove Youth Orchestra in the Conservatorium of Music, as part of the Lane Cove Festival.

Awe-inspiring images of the artworks will be projected onto a screen behind the orchestra during its performance.

The concert program will also include works by Beethoven, Mussorgsky and Saint-Saens, and performance by special guests the Willoughby Girls’ High School Chamber Ensemble with director Lucy East.

People are often confused about how Sydney Community Services gets funded. Some people think we are part of the Council, some think we are part of NSW Government, others that we are a commercial operation or some mixture of all the above.

The truth is our funding comes from several places and in most cases is specifically tied to one of the services or activities we provide. We are a not-for-profit organisation (aka for-a-purpose) and are registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and have DGR status (deductible gift recipient).

Our biggest funder is the Federal Government via the Department of Health. We receive about half of our money to subside services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). CHSP funds specific services aimed at supporting seniors to live safely and comfortably in their own homes. These services include Home Modifications and Maintenance, Meals on Wheels, Podiatry, Community Nursing, Transport and Community Centre Activities. To access these programs, seniors need to register through My Aged Care and, following an assessment, they can be referred to us for support. People accessing these programs need to contribute a small fee for services as funding only subsidises that program and it does not cover the cost.

Our second major funder is the National Disability Insurance Scheme which provides funds for people living with a disability who are under 65 years old. About 10% of our money comes from the NDIS, but unlike CHSP which comes in two large amounts in advance, the NDIS will only pay per occasion of service and in arrears.

Fees paid by our clients make up about 20% of our income and these cover the costs of the meals themselves, the ramps and rails installed, the cost of disposables used by our nurses or a contribution towards the cost of podiatrists making home visits.

We are very fortunate to receive substantial funding and in-kind support from Lane Cove Council. We pay a peppercorn rent for our Pottery Lane Office and receive over $250,000 through the Council’s Financial Assistance Grants. This money helps us to enhance our nursing service, fund an information service for seniors, support our disability social programs (including Different Degrees, our amazing drama ensemble). The Council also supports some of the costs of the social activities for which we receive no other money apart from a small fee from those who take part.

Hunters Hill Council is also very supportive with funding and low rents on our office there.

We apply for small grants which are tied to specific projects, eg NSW FACS funds a program to mentor students at Hunters Hill High School, clubs like North Ryde RSL, Ryde Eastwood Leagues and Gladesville RSL fund small projects like bus driver training, the Gladesville Art Show or an expansion of nursing program.

We also get donations from the public and we’re a longstanding beneficiary of the Hunters Hill Food and Wine Festival. Any donations we get are tax deductable, so please consider us when you are thinking of making a charitable donations.

All of this funding means that we can move into our 59th year continuing to support residents on the lower north shore and continue to develop new programs and solutions to address the problems local people face.

Resilience I have recently met a very resilient young man. Born stateless, his remarkable life story shows determination to overcome nearly impossible odds. As a professional in North Sydney, he is now far removed from the likely perils of stateless people such as gaol time, drug abuse, death on the streets or selling organs.

Intrigued by the hope and courage shown by people living in situations where I would expect only despair, I probed Fadi for clues to the origins of his resilience.

He immediately narrated a story of his mother’s positive attitude in the hardest times. She would focus on the object of her gratitude (a cold glass of water was sufficient), ignoring all the pain that had preceded that new reality. She had fought for her only son to have an education and he treasured it, utilising the opportunity well. He cherished her love and sacrifice for him and returned those gifts to her when he was more capable of being the provider.

They were people of faith, who believed God is good and just, despite their current circumstances, and despite a future that indicated nothing better. They continued to strive towards that hope, loving and supporting each other as best they could.

But then Mum died. Fortunately, Fadi had learned those lessons of resilience sufficiently well to overcome another potentially crippling hurdle.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from the difficulties we face. How do we build resilience in ourselves and our children? Facing challenges head on, rather than blaming or rescuing, medicating or denying them, is a great start. Teaming up to face them, like Fadi and his Mum, draws support to get through. Choosing to be appreciative of the good in our lives builds our hope and courage. Faith in God doesn’t deny our current reality, but gives hope for a future beyond our sight.
