• Gail Le Bransky – Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in the delivery of transport services in NSW. Ms Le Bransky is Director of Social Policy at Transport for NSW; now on secondment as Director Disability Employment at the Public Service Commission.

As a consultant she has advised many NSW Government agencies and prepared Lane Cove Council’s first Disability Discrimination Act Action Plan.

• Nicholas Cowdery QC, AM – now also Office of Order of Australia – for distinguished service to the law and protection of human rights, to professional legal bodies, and to the community. He was NSW’s Director of Public Prosecutions from 1994 to 2011. Cowdery also served as President of the International Association of Prosecutors from 1999 to 2005.

Best Wishes Former Lane Cove Mayor, Deborah Hutchens will be honoured in a private member’s statement to the Legislative Assembly when parliament resumes after the winter break.

Alternative herbicides Following ongoing bad publicity about the herbicide glyphosate, Lane Cove Council will review its use in chemical for weed management.

It’s a chemical active in many popular off-the-shelf products, most famously Roundup. Yet a recent landmark US $298 milliondollar damages win in the USA has again sparked concern.

World Health Organisation classifies it as ‘probably carcinogenic’ and there are strong restrictions in Canada and many South American countries. France and the Netherlands have already banned its use and even Vietnam is banning its importation.

In its review, to be submitted in its August ordinary meeting, council will - consider alternative products - w ill review its public notification procedures before glyphosate is used - c onsider Fairfield City Council, Georges River Council and others as to how they have phased out and stopped using chemicals containing glyphosate.

There are many alternatives to glyphosate including a pelargonic acid (organic weedkiller) known by its product name Slasher. Slasher performs the same task as glyphosate however it is an organic herbicide. It has been tested to rapidly kill weeds, moss, algae and lichen. When sprayed over plants Slasher destroys the outer leaf cells causing plants to desiccate, wilt and die.

Member for Lane Cove, Anthony Roberts, will be making a statement of personal and public appreciation for this ‘devoted servant of Lane Cove’ as Ms Hutchens recovers from a second stroke, and the community’s good wishes go with his. This is a synopsis of his statement: Adelaide-born, Ms Hutchens moved to Longueville 30 years ago and became known locally through work including as teacher’s assistant, on Neighbourhood Watch and the police liaison group.

After a career in several industries, she turned in her 50s to fulfil a life ambition to become a hairdresser. And she felt called to politics as had her grandfather (Mayor of Kensington, Adelaide) and her father (Burnside Council, Adelaide).

Ms Hutchens ran for Council because she wanted to help ensure the future of Lane Cove as a great place to live for people of all ages. She has served as a Lane Cove Councillor since 2012 and was elected Mayor on a wave of support in 2015 (until 2017). As Mayor, she led the defence against proposed council amalgamations. Attending her first protest rally at Lane Cove Town Hall when she was 68, she was ‘always one to show that age is but a number’.

Her list of achievements is long; it includes starting the Lane Cove Food & Wine Festival, creating local International Women’s Day events and developing ‘Hold My Hand’, an initiative to improve children’s safety around cars.

Ms Hutchens is still a director of Sydney Community Services and a Board Member for Lane Cove Retirement Units where she has taken time to meet and chat with applicants who are financially struggling so she can provide as much assistance as possible.

As Mr Roberts will tell the Assembly, locals from ‘the town choir, Council workers, small business owners, to community groups’ have come out in droves sending love, good thoughts and prayers to Ms Hutchens in this tough period.

Low density stays low in LC Most owners of Lane Cove properties would be sighing in relief. Lane Cove Council’s exemption from the new lowrise medium density housing code became official mid- June when its 2009 LEP was officially amended to ensure the code will not apply to 2,600 properties in Council’s R2 low-density areas.

If it had not been amended, the code – known as the medium density code for short - would have applied to properties of 600-plus sqm in low-density zones just two weeks later on July 1 when Council’s deferral of the code expired. Application of the code would have encouraged medium-density building styles across the low-density area, including twostorey townhouses and terraces – and these would be fast-tracked without the usual development applications. ”Finalisation of Council’s exemption from this code gives residents certainty about the kind of developments permitted in the area, said Mayor Cr Pam Palmer. “It means no medium-density developments will occur in areas zoned R2.”

Ms Palmer said Council’s community consultation showed that about 75% of residents did not want medium density.

Confusingly, as well as applying to medium-density zones, the incoming medium-density code also applies to lowdensity zones where multi-occupancy dwellings are permitted. Prior to the amendment, under Lane Cove’s LEP, lowdensity zones did allow multi-occupancy villas – restricted to one storey and certain floor space ratios.

“But just because we once wanted single-storey, multi-dwelling villas, it didn’t mean we wanted two-storey townhouses across our low-density zones,” said Council General Manager, Craig Wrightson. “So by simply removing multi-occupancy villas from its LEP, Lane Cove removed the possibility of a variety of medium-density buildings in the R2 zone.”

The code initially came into effect mid2018 for many councils, but resistance by about 10 councils including Lane Cove, Hornsby, Inner West, Mosman and Northern Beaches, won a year’s deferral till July 1, 2019 from former Planning Minister Anthony Roberts. Lane Cove used this time to change its LEP, with Lane Cove the only council to achieve the exemption during the period.

“We were very appreciative of Anthony Roberts’ working with us so that we’d get the outcome most residents would be happy with,” said Cr Palmer. “Without the recent exemption, not only would medium density have been allowed, but it would have been fast-tracked through a ‘complying development’ process, which does not require a development application”.

Under the code, ‘complying developments’ which fit the code in mandatory ways can be processed by councils (or private certifiers) in a two-week process where a council does not assess a development nor its impacts on surrounds but ticks boxes, to ensure a building or extension fits the complying development category. There is little or no time for residents’ objections.

Under its incoming ‘Missing Middle’ or medium-density code, the NSW Government is encouraging medium density dwellings to fill a perceived gap between the two most common building types – apartments and single dwellings – and to fast-track these to quickly meet housing targets and offer a wider range of housing types .

Minister for Planning and Public Space, Rob Stokes, is in favour of greater density for creating more affordable and varied housing options as well as more open spaces.

“Sydneysiders are looking for alternatives to free-standing homes and highrise apartments,” said Mr Stokes, “and twostorey terraces are one of many solutions.”

The code is in operation in 78 of 129 LGAs in NSW where medium density or multioccupancy dwellings are allowed; other councils deferred application of the code for a year until July 1.

Should Lane Cove Council declare a climate emergency?

Members of the Lane Cove Sustainability Group (LCSAG) and other local community groups met with Cr Andrew Zbik in late June to initiate a call on Lane Cove Council to declare climate change an emergency.

Cr Zbik, Council’s pragmatic environmentalist known for his involvement in recycling and minimising plastics, was keen to discuss the Return and Earn scheme among other things on our groups’ list – and we look forward to updating you on our progress.

Nationally, however, political forces guiding the nation for the next three years are elected and there’s little optimism this government will step up action on fighting climate change. All the more reason to work urgently at a local level.

Whilst our emissions are continuing to rise, the Adani coalmine has been approved, with further prospects of even larger coalmines in the region in the future. We have wasted decades of lost opportunities during which time we could have taken advantage of the immense possibilities this country has to offer in a host of renewable energy options.

Although the cost of action would have been significantly less had we acted earlier, we now need to have a national

conversation about the likely astronomical cost of inaction.

This is a topic sparingly discussed. Modelling by the IPCC, UN and other scientific bodies all point to the importance of what we do between now and 2030, at which time a massive transformation needs to be well underway. How many more times do we need to hear that this month, this year, this decade, was the hottest on record before government acts decisively? The heat, literally, is really on.

Is our call for change loud enough? If the interest demonstrated at the recent Bill McKibbens Accelerate doco on climate change hosted by LCSAG, is any indication, there’s abundant concern locally about government inaction. The well attended film was followed by a lively discussion between a very engaged audience and a line-up of panellists with a diverse range of expertise and passions.

Further afield, in the lead up to the recent elections, we witnessed our youth, farmers, grey nomads and thousands of others gather in halls, on the streets and in the parks with what appeared to be one central message, most Australians want real action. These sentiments were however not expressed on election day where, sadly, tax cuts rather than emission reductions won the day. Yes, it was always going to be

‘inconvenient’ to fight climate change. Our ignorant behaviour towards the natural world urgently needs to be checked.

Despite our leader parading in corridors of power caressing a lump of coal, that love is not shared by all. Business as usual, especially where it concerns fossil fuel, is not an option if we want to leave a liveable planet for future generations.

It’s impossible to tell how much time we have to make a real difference, but with the avalanche of depressing reports on environmental indicators such as species extinction, depleting ocean oxygen levels and everything in between, time is not on our side. No wonder some of us are numbed into a state of blinkered despair.

Nevertheless we know what needs to be done – what our environmental policies should be. We can't hide behind the fact that Australia only contributes less than 2% to total global emissions, when our per capita emissions are amongst the highest in the world and we are the 13th-highest overall CO2 polluter in the world. We have a moral obligation to act before pointing the finger at others. We need to acknowledge we have been poor custodians of this land, a fact highlighted by the recently released report on Australian native species announcing Australia, in the past 200 years, had the highest mammalian extinction rate in the world …. That’s millions of years of evolution destined for the dustbin. (UN May 2019 Sustainable Development Report – Paris)

Greta represents the youth of this world, she has inspired and rallied them, they have been listening and are voicing their concern. It is our call to acknowledge them. We must act, if we don't we will be sailing blindly into unchartered and dangerous waters.

As has been proven in many places worldwide, local action can lead to national and international change … for us change starts here in Lane Cove. We can unite with our families, friends, the wider Lane Cove community and our local government to take action.

LCSAG urges Lane Cove Council to add its voice to a growing movement of local and national governments declaring a climate change emergency. This needs to be an ambitious declaration, well beyond a token symbolic gesture and be based on measurable actions. There is a string of options which could include an ambitious emissions reduction target, a move to electric cars from Council, an annual car-free Sunday in Lane Cove, tree planting target, more recycling etc.

Get on the edible garden trail There’s an open invitation for all green thumbs who like to share their passion for growing food … to be part of the inaugural Sydney Edible Garden Trail on the third weekend in March 2020.

The ticketed, non-profit event will not only share gardening knowledge and ideas but will send all proceeds back into community and school edible gardens via grants to raise awareness about the benefits of growing your own food.

All sorts of gardeners with edible gardens can join the trail: from private gardens to small balcony gardens to wall gardens, gardens in streets and other public spaces, informal group gardens on verges, nature strips, around apartment buildings or on rooftops. Whatever the location, the Sydney Edible Garden Trail will showcase healthy food-producing techniques and sustainable gardening through mulching, recycling and composting, planting to encourage bees and discourage pests, and other organic growing techniques that reduce chemical use.

It’s the brainchild of Lane Cove local (and Citizen of the Year), Bridget Kennedy, who was inspired earlier this year when she went on the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Trail with likeminded gardeners from Permaculture Sydney North (PSN). Bridget had been sorely missing the ABC Open Gardens scheme since it folded in 2014, and, within a day of the Mountains visit, had contacted the event’s founder Susanne Rix. Within the next few weeks, Nita Lo and Janna Mizen of PSN, Margaret Mossakowska of Moss House in Denistone … and another Lane Cove local, Laurie Green, founder of Crop Swap Australia, were also involved.

“The Trail event will show growing food is not as hard as many people think,” said Bridget. “It doesn’t have to be a lot of work … I have kids and run a business, and so does my husband, so we plant a lot of perennials. We have a banana circle, a feijoa hedge, an edible verge, chook pen and various citrus, fruit trees, herbs and other edibles, mixed with ornamentals.”

“Nor is it always messy-looking or boring with repetitive square beds or crop rows. Trees in my garden make it more of an edible forest, and

there’s a central pond and traditional elements of garden design such as hedges.”

The inaugural trail is expected to start with about 50 gardens in Ku-Ring-Gai, Lane Cove, Willoughby, Ryde, Hornsby and North Sydney, and organisers hope it becomes a Sydney-wide event. There’s no telling how big Sydney’s edible event might grow – Crop Swap Australia was founded by Laurie Green as a way to swap excess produce and seeds in Sydney and is now national.

Bridget’s own garden was part of the last ABC Open Gardens Australia event in 2014 and last year won the Edible Garden category of the Lane Cove Council Garden competition. When not gardening, Bridget is creating jewellery from recycled materials and running The Project Space, a jewellery, object and art gallery in North Sydney.

She’s also a member of the monthly Repair Cafe Sydney, Lane Cove, and the World Crafts Council of Australia.

Recent media attention on Sydney’s density and affordable housing issues has intensified in the debate about the Medium Density Housing Code – from which it appears Lane Cove LGA is now exempt.

The so-called ‘missing middle’ policy has been under review due to concerns that, if reintroduced to certain areas, medium-density development such as townhouses, terraces, and duplexes, could threaten suburban character and life where residents do not want change. residential precincts. (https://www. citylab.com/perspective/2019/02/nimbyyimby-zoning-geography-housingdevelopment/582064/) As one critic of Boston’s metropolitan planning wrote in 1945, the city “suffers from political institutions which are still adapted to the horse-and-buggy age although modern technology has made of the area one single whole.” This is still true of our NIMBYs today: they think and act in geographic units more suitable for the 18th century than the 21st.

Some critics of the Medium Density policy include Chris Johnson, CEO of Urban Taskforce, and Tony Recsei, president of Save Our Suburbs. From an SMH article on 7 July 2019, it appears they are vocal on two fronts: 1. Relatively medium-rise and lowimpact development could still have bulky proportions that might jeopardise local character in existing low-density suburbs.

2. There should be a concentration of higher density around town centres and infrastructure nodes where land use by zoning can balance retention of lower scale areas with single houses. In many suburbs, little change has been possible due to perceptions that medium-density building will irreversibly alter suburban character, but debate continues between so-called NIMBYs and YIMBYs (No vs Yes…In My Back Yard) on the question of whether different forms of density done well can create more liveable, cosmopolitan and safer 12 TVO JULY 2019

So perhaps there is another question to be asked – what sort of future urban or suburban environments are the most attractive for ‘extended’ family life? What is the perceived ‘backyard’ today, and what forms of development can best deliver those places that are increasingly sought for socialising and recreation beyond our homes yet are within a walkable distance. That is a key issue whether we live in bungalow, townhouse or unit, and whatever our living circumstances.

In a recent statement, NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes spoke of the need to reduce spot rezoning by planning proposals but to maintain housing diversity, so it will be interesting to see how the pendulum swings on options for medium-density dwellings.

In relation to planned precincts, which have been controversial in communities such as St Leonards and around Macquarie Park and Ryde in Sydney's north-west, Mr Stokes said it made sense to have development concentrated near transport infrastructure, but that he wanted to collaborate with councils. “… If there are other ways to deliver it, I'm happy to look at it," he said. more akin to those European environments many of us fondly recall from our travels can include diversity, amenity and sense of community whether the density is at 100 pph (people per hectare) of New York, 160 pph of Barcelona, 200 pph of Paris or, in the case of Sydney, just 30 pph but increasing.

Often the relationships between buildings and open, public spaces contribute more than buildings alone to the quality of a neighbourhood environment. This is where we are more likely to engage with others with whom we seek living experiences – the new communal places and public open spaces that are fast becoming more inclusive, socially engaging alternatives to backyards. Our neighbourhood’s examples include Lane Cove Plaza and hopefully The Canopy (emerging from the former Rosenthal car park).

Looking at St Leonards South (SLS) precinct, could it be that much of the community angst on that masterplan comes from typical multi-unit developments of the past decade and their associated often sub-standard civic domains? Perhaps some ‘finer-grain’ townhouses, with more detail and character, mixed with medium-rise units and a variety of accessible public domain could yet create an inviting and walkable urban village close to transport, amenities and alternative backyards.

Feedback from the independent IPC Panel on the SLS masterplan and rezoning is imminent. If this gets a green light from Minister Stokes, and is then managed by design excellence reviews both in the early and later stages of DA assessment, SLS could realise a desirable model that will far surpass what recent developments have led us to expect. An exemplary result at SLS, could encourage a YIMBY approach that would see Lane Cove put out a ‘welcome mat’ for a variety of well-designed developments.

Your stomach and you

Helicobacter gastritis Until two Western Australian pathologists found this bacterium a few years ago, nobody thought a bacterium could live in the stomach’s acid environment. They won a Nobel prize for their discovery. Helicobacter can cause indigestion and lead to general irritation and to gastritis – inflammation of the stomach lining. Gastritis contributes to peptic ulcers and cancer. Another cause of gastritis is an immune response that destroys stomach lining cells and leads to anaemia, vitamin deficiencies and cancer. It's complex.

Gastroenteritis This is usually caused by a viral, bacterial or amoebic infection. A viral ‘gastro’ starts with intense nausea and vomiting then diahorrea, as the bug affects the lower bowel. If viral, it’s usually over in 24-48 hours if viral. Causes? Think food, flies and faeces.

“What you eat today walks and talks tomorrow” … the saying is tired but true, and tried and proven about three times a day by most of us!

Most of us don’t think much about our stomachs or what they do. We just eat and forget – unless we get indigestion and rue that last meal and those extra drinks. And then at 2am have to look for Enos or Gaviscon.

Yet stomachs are the first organ in the process of fueling us. Your stomach performs a huge digestive transformation, maintaining your wellbeing and metabolism. From yesterday’s steak and eggs in outback Oz to leafy vegetarian meals, or Eastern dishes including unidentifiable creatures, to Western meat-lovers’ diets, from Icelandic rotten shark to South America’s ubiquitous gut-burning chillies … somehow a stomach deals with massive variety.

Whatever you’re eating, your front teeth cut your food and your back teeth squash it, mixing it with saliva and digestive enzymes. Bolting food in large chunks leaves too much work for the stomach and can lead to indigestion.

So chew well.

Stomach structure There are several layers of tissues in the stomach. As in the rest of the

gastrointestinal tract, the stomach has layers of muscle in different directions on the outside. These muscles churn your food with hydrochloric acid and digestive chemicals made there.

The innermost layer makes the digestive and breakdown secretions that do the job. Its various cells make enzymes, hydrochloric acid and a protective mucus layer to protect the stomach.

Your food ends up as a slurry that passes down to the small bowel for further digestion and absorption. As for the conditions that can cause grief…

GORD or Gastro Intestinal Reflux Disease is extremely common, and its symptoms are likely felt lying flat on your back after a big meal. It becomes a problem when the valve at the top of the stomach gets floppy and allows stomach contents and their acidity to flush up the oesophagus to the back of the mouth.

Indigestion at any time is acid burning the oesophagus, itself unprotected by a mucus layer. Often reflux wakes people at night after a big, late meal and too many drinks. There’s a plethora of antacids out there but troublesome symptoms need investigation and treatment.

Bacterial infections such as Campylobacter pylori or Salmonella feature gut pain, high temperatures and bowel looseness usually for at least several days. These often require antibiotics depending on severity. With amoebic infection there’s tiredness, weight loss and intermittent diahorrea.

Non-ulcer dyspepsia N.U. dyspepsia has no obvious cause. It usually persists, even for years. It is seen more often in women and the elderly.

Precipitants include anti-inflammatories, smoking, anxiety and, interestingly, those abused in childhood. Symptoms include burning, bloating, fullness after meals and nausea.

Peptic ulcers, cancer and Crohn’s disease Peptic ulcer and stomach cancer rates have fallen a lot since it became possible to treat Helicobacter. Symptoms include a mix and match of the above with the possibility of catastrophic bleeding and perforation. Crohns, that horrible bowel condition, can spread to the stomach.

With any of these symptoms, do see your doctor. And remember indigestion can be a mimic: the coronary care ward is full of people with ‘a touch of indigestion’.

Know your numbers Invincible in her twenties, Sharon McGowan didn’t give her health a second thought.

Now CEO of the Stroke Foundation, it’s not easy for her to confess she’s not always lived the healthy lifestyle she spruiks today. By Sharon McGowan.

I was about to launch a campaign, Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, which included rolling up my sleeve for a blood pressure check on television. Before we went live, I checked my blood pressure myself. I had not done so for a long time and was shocked to learn it was 160/90 – anything more than 140/90 is considered high. I put it down to preinterview nerves, but quickly followed up with a trip to my doctor.

I was a social smoker, a night out meant at least four drinks, exercise was not on my radar and my favourite meal was pasta with smoked salmon and a rich cream sauce. Life was fun and busy and, to be honest, my health didn’t rate thought.

I was a nurse at the time so in theory I should have known better. And I have extensive family history of heart disease, stroke and congenital heart defects.

But my health habits – or lack thereof – were typical of healthy, normal twentysomethings in the ‘80s.

My first health scare was when I was 31: I collapsed. Tests revealed I had a heart murmur and an extremely slow heart rate. This fright changed my path – I started to take health seriously. I was not able to drive for a year so had to use public transport and walk.

A little exercise led to more exercise and other healthy habits. I quit smoking, took up regular exercise, switched from diet drinks to water and started eating wholegrains and lots of vegetables.

As a result, I enjoyed a new stamina and clear mind and even took on further study.

Flash forward to 2016, when I had just started my dream role of leading the Stroke Foundation. I was fit and healthy – or so I thought.

Talk about a wake-up call! I was diagnosed with the very condition about which I was raising public awareness. I had high blood pressure and was at serious risk of stroke yet had no idea. I looked fit on the outside but … !

My story demonstrates that none of us is immune to the risk. In my case, genetics predisposed me to high blood pressure. I dread to think how much worse my blood pressure reading would have been if I had not adopted regular exercise, a better diet and quit smoking all those years ago.

There is nothing you can do to change your family history, but ‘knowing your numbers’ and making positive lifestyle changes to keep blood pressure within a normal range will give you the best chance of living a long and healthy life.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the key risk factor for stroke. More than 4 million Australians are living with high blood pressure, and frighteningly, about one third don’t know they have it!

The reason people are unaware and that hypertension is a silent killer is that it has no symptoms until it’s serious. Over time, it damages blood vessels which put people at serious risk of stroke and heart disease.

Sensitivity to cold: why your teeth feel the freeze If your teeth suddenly feel the cold as much as your toes when the weather turns wintry, it’s time to act … advertorial by Mark Casiglia of Apple Dental.

It’s easy to slip into woolly socks to keep your feet warm but it takes a little more time to sort out sensitive teeth. So put that balaclava back on the shelf (unless you’re actually going skiing) and read on to ensure your teeth can cope with winter once you’ve sorted your sensitivity issues.

Why your teeth feel the freeze If the weather is chilly outside, your teeth can feel the freeze because the dentin layer inside the enamel expands and contracts faster than the enamel. This can cause tiny cracks which can create sensitivity.

While these cracks aren’t usually visible or damaging to your teeth, the fluid moving in the tiny tubes in the dentin is more exposed and your teeth feel more sensitive. If you’re particularly sensitive all over to the cold, you may also be clenching your teeth because you are tense – this can also cause sensitivity and jaw and toothaches.

What can cause sensitivity But if you’re indoors and toasty and your teeth are still in pain, the weather might not be the only thing to blame. Flinching when you have a cup of hot soup or a bowl of ice-cream is not normal. Sensitive teeth can be caused by: • • • • • • • •

infected teeth or gums cracked or damaged teeth periodontal disease grinding or clenching your teeth defective fillings, crowns or bridges cavities needing treatment large metal fillings more serious oral health conditions including some cancers

It’s important not to ignore ongoing sensitivity in your teeth – see your dentist to get it sorted. Avoiding everything that puts an ‘ouch’ in your mouth is not a long-term strategy.

Treating tender teeth Your dentist will look at your dental history and check your teeth and mouth to assess the reasons for your pain.

Treatment may range from a check-up and clean with oral hygiene training to X-rays and dental work, depending on what the underlying issues are.

So don’t stress about your sensitive teeth now the weather is chilly, get it sorted and enjoy the new season.

These bugs are not trying to hurt us, they shed LPS as they die. Examples are E. coli, Hafnia alvei, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Morganella morganii, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas putida, Citrobacter koseri and Klebsiella pneumoniae. LIVERITY CAN, TOO The idea for Liverity ‘Fashion for Life’ a fundraiser with styles paraded for and by people being treated for cancer, was born about a year ago by Longueville resident, Linda Botter.

A dozen women and men who are battling or have recently battled cancer will pivot on a catwalk to celebrate life at a local August 24 fashion fundraiser made possible by Lane Cove businesses and local volunteers.

Linda Botter has first-hand knowledge of the toll taken not only by cancer but also its treatment. Linda came up with the idea for ‘Liverity’ while undergoing exercise physiology at CancerFit, a cancer-specific rehab centre in St Leonards.

Most of the models taking the catwalk in Liverity attend CancerFit as part of their treatment, and the entire event was made possible by local businesses and volunteers.

“I am blown away by the generosity and enthusiasm shown [by Lane Cove businesses] in making Liverity happen,” said Linda. “From garments provided by so many of the boutiques, hair styling by Toni & Guy and makeup generously donated by Tres Jolie. It’s a great community to be part of”.

People undergoing cancer treatment experience physical, mental and emotional trauma. Linda says this event gives them the chance to put all that aside for a day and celebrate life and community spirit, while raising money for rural cancer patients through Can Assist.

Catwalk models receive personal styling by Greenwich stylist Sally Bruce, and coaching in catwalk choreography by Northwood local Kim Walters, a professional dancer.

Linda surrounded herself with a team of skilled and dedicated volunteers from around Lane Cove and approached the boutiques in Lane Cove for the opportunity to dress a model for the night.

Money raised through ticket sales to the event and other fund-raising on the night goes to Can Assist a NSW-based charity giving financial and nonfinancial support to rural people being treated for cancer.

When you need a hearing aid, where do you go?

When the time comes to get a hearing aid, it can be difficult to know where to go. Follow this checklist for the right clinicial and right result – advertorial by Damian O’Connor, Audiologist, WHAT The Hearing Centre.

• Look for an audiologist who is university-trained, is a member of Audiology Australia and has government accreditation.

• Check the hearing clinic supplies a range of brands of hearing aids at a range of prices. Is the hearing clinic owned by a manufacturer?

• Ask if they do Real Ear Measurement (REM). REMs assess the performance of hearing aids based on your hearing test, the acoustics of your ears and using presented speech sounds. Once set based on this assessment, speech sounds are amplified more accurately and fittings are much more successful.

• Make sure you like and can trust your clinician. Find one with several years’ experience fitting aids. If they are pushy to sell products and don't thoroughly consider your needs, try somewhere else.

• Spend within your budget. Most major hearing aid brands these days are high quality.

• You pay more if you want more advanced noise processing and more features.

• Ideally, bring someone along to your first appointment, and ask lots of questions.

It’s time to go …

When it comes to preparing to get away, frequent travellers seem to have it all down pat. Wrong. The week leading up to any journey still unsettles Adrienne Witteman because a few grenades come over the horizon and her best laid plans disappear. Disruptions aside, there are several common-sense things I do to minimise their effects, and these steps might help you, too.

1.

Around a month before travel, I check my diary to see what’s scheduled before I leave so I have a mental map of my confirmed commitments and timings. If my diary has become too full, I try to rearrange appointments in the week prior to my departure to free up as much time as possible.

2.

At the same time, I recheck all flight times, hotel and car bookings and most importantly, check my insurance is up-to-date, and that I comply with visa requirements.

4.

I also check my passport is good.

I know it won’t have expired but I check nonetheless. (A word of warning – if your passport is tatty or has gone through the washing machine, it WILL NOT meet requirements so replace it immediately.)

5.

I start to empty the fridge, not throwing food away but planning meals to use what won’t survive a three or four week hiatus.

6.

In the office, I start to recheck clients’ files for upcoming payment due dates and essential tasks before I leave.

I do work while away but some things are more easily managed from my desk!

A week before travel I move onto the list mentally checking the list of clothes and stuff I’ll need without having to visit a laundromat more than once a week. I admit I inevitably bring home things that I don’t use or wear – but better than running short.

8.

I’m ashamed to admit my packing is often done last minute, three hours or so before I leave for the airport or, all going well, the night before. Wise packers tell me this is not good enough and I’m wise enough to agree. But the list sees me through.

9.

You’ll see that top of my list is all the techno gadgets that I’ll need. I can always buy more clothes, or muddle through with not enough, but this won’t do for critical hardware.

Rereading this makes it all seem so systematic and easy – and I suppose it is if you follow the list religiously and do it early … Every time I travel, I make the resolution that next time I’ll get it all right! Happy travels!!!

Max Porter is a young writer with substantial critical acclaim. His debut novel Grief Is the Thing With Feathers (2015) was described by The Guardian’s Alexandra Harris as “the dark, comic, wild, beautiful prose-poem-novel that was a runaway success”.

It won multiple awards including the International Dylan Thomas prize for young writers in 2016. Lanny, his new novel, uses the same poetic language and magic realism to tell the story of Lanny – an extraordinary, highly intelligent and artistic boy.

Lanny is an only child with a big heart, a startling imagination and a unique perspective who skips through life to the beat of his own drum. He lives in a typical English village within commuting distance of London with his parents. Lanny is watched over by the village’s ancient spirit, Dead Papa Toothwort, a mythical character, drawn from the folklore of the “Green man”. In this novel, Dead Papa Toothwort floats and shapeshifts his way around the village, watching and listening to the inhabitants of the village “he swims in it, he gobbles it up and wraps himself in it”. His presence resonates with malevolence and it feels as though he represents a threat to Lanny. Or perhaps it is just the indifference of Nature we experience through Dead Papa Toothwort’s character which, in itself, is a threat to humanity’s attachment to life.

We are drawn to Lanny’s innocence and creative intelligence and in stark contrast, we experience the jaded, narrow views of the villagers and the sense of isolation experienced by the newcomers – Lanny’s family. Lanny has few friends but a close connection to nature and spends a lot of time in the woods developing his various imaginative projects. His mother, hoping to develop his artistic talents, arranges for him to take lessons with their neighbour, Pete, a successful, modern artist and a close friendship develops between them.

When Lanny goes missing, the close-minded villagers and the local police shift their focus immediately to Pete – the ageing man spending time with a young boy. As the media circus descends and Lanny’s parents navigate their way through the fear, terror and grief of having a missing child, we see the English village at its worst – full of suspicion and prejudice.

Lanny is written from the alternating perspectives of the adult characters: Lanny’s Mum, Lanny’s Dad, Pete and Dead Papa Toothwort. I found the story engaging and quick to read but some of the magical realism in Dead Papa Toothwort’s sections was a bit too quirky for my taste: ‘‘Dead Papa Toothwort hugs himself with diseased larch arms and dribbles cuckoo spit down his chin”. However, don’t let that dissuade you from reading the book. Lanny is a delightful character and it was a great story with an interesting literary premise - the villagers continuing their workaday lives oblivious of the ancient spirit who hovers around observing them.

The art of spelling Autocorrect is leading to a generation of kids clueless about spelling and meanings of words. The skill of proof-reading for sense as much as spelling has vanished. By Liz Foster This simple tool is not always your friend. SMS, or short message service, has become so ubiquitous it’s now common for business situations. Spare a thought for the poor person responding to an HR text confirming an interview. He replied, ‘I look forward to sleeping with you.’ Oh dear, oh dear. The hasty addendum - *speaking – might or might not have got him the job.

Technology is great, 99% of the time but it amplifies any mistakes a thousand times. In the ‘90s I worked for a corporate where a young guy on placement from the Malaysian office sent out a daily sales report to all staff. In my in-box as usual was his ‘DAILY SALES’ email. Followed by another from HR, headed ‘DO NOT OPEN DAILY SALES’. And a third missive from the hapless guy again, titled ‘DAILY SALES – APOLOGY’.

He went completely white when he realised … we never saw him again.

As you can guess, we gathered as one round the nearest PC and opened the first message. The poor lad had intended to send the pic of bikini-clad girls at Bondi to a Malaysian mate, adding they reminded him of papayas back home. Instead, he sent it to the daily sales distribution list. He went completely white when he realised … we never saw him again.

Technology led to my biggest professional blunder. I had to sign off final artwork destined for thousands of confectionery cartons. A tiny, last-minute change required the addition of an ® to the back. I approved it and off it went to the printer.

Alas, the graphic designer had used an older artwork file full of mistakes and typos since rectified on later versions. But I’d only rechecked the added ®.

I kept my job but never made that mistake again, and earned a reputation as an anal shrew when signing off artwork.

Ignorance is bliss. We assume mistakes just haven’t been proofread, as, surely, they would have fixed them. ‘Shoplifters will be prostituted’ conjures up a severe if slightly thrilling image.

The foibles of the English language don’t help either. Here’s my favourite: ‘PRIVATE. Customer parking only. All others will be toad.’ (Seems a tad harsh – I only nipped in for two minutes to grab some milk). I’ll park elsewhere, like this carpark where you come out quite well: ‘Violators will be towed and find $50.’

What a difference an ‘e’ makes.

Students' voices for lifelong learning Who knew a local little democratic primary and pre-school, Currambena, would be a powerhouse for educational change? The Future Schools Alliance’s Peter Hutton is another coup for the event. He will share the mainstream educational data that 40% of students are disengaged and 'don’t believe assignments' will be useful to them one day’ … while half of all teachers leave the profession within five years … and one-quarter of uni students drop out in the first year. He’ll also share ideas on the solution. Mr Sahlberg and Mr Hutton are leaders in a much-needed response to disengagement, and they’re fanning 28 TVO JULY 2019

passions of educators and students as ‘change agents’.

“The future has to be about releasing students from the tyranny of the “TEACH IT”, “TEST IT!” practice,” says Mr Hutton. “We’re moving to a system that builds on students’ strengths and interests.”

Be a girl, play football!

Lane Cove FC celebrated our first Female Football Week (May 25-June 2) in the lead-up to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. With the support of Northern Suburbs Football Association (NSFA), LCFC hosted a coaching workshop for 22 coaches in the female game. Our female juniors enjoyed a combined training night, their first together as a large squad, decked out in fluoro costumes. Our LCFC development squad and women’s teams followed suit with their own versions of the fluoro-themed training night.

LCFC marked the end of Female Football Week with our first female club day celebration at Blackman Park. ‘XLR8’ coaches, Sarah and Chris, activated our Female Club Day with some fun football activities in between a great showcase of female club talent joined us. Many thanks go to our LCFC and the team at NSFA for putting together the Female Club Day and coaching support in the season.

The objective of Female Football Week is to drive female participation at all levels of the game.

I am delighted to share some good news on the planning front. A recent State Government initiative sought to permit medium density developments, such as terraces and townhouses, within existing low-density residential (R2) zones.

Council’s subsequent public consultation showed that residents overwhelmingly opposed this change. We put our case to the Government and they have now agreed. While Lane Cove Council supports and encourages housing diversity, we are now able to maintain the existing residential character of the R2 low-density zone and its landscape setting.

Another good Lane Cove story worth sharing is a reminder about the recyclables placed in your yellow- and blue-lidded bins. The bins are emptied by URM but the contents are delivered to Visy recycling centres. They do not go to landfill.

Visy recovers recyclable materials to preserve our earth’s precious resources. You can read more about Council’s environmental sustainability initiatives below.

Finally, I’d like to talk about sustainability in another way - the economic sustainability of local businesses. This is vital to ensuring the goods and services we need can be obtained locally. To this end, Council recently hosted another Business Breakfast. I was able to introduce Nicole Eckels, the entrepreneur who founded Glasshouse Fragrances. Her story was an inspiring one which stimulated much conversation at this networking event. Thank you to all the local businesses who took time out to attend. We are all looking forward to the opening of The Canopy in Lane Cove.

Formerly known as the Rosenthal Project, The Canopy is taking shape with concrete works almost complete and construction of a new rock wall along Rosenthal Avenue set to begin this month.

And good news for users of the popular temporary car park on Birdwood Avenue… it will remain open until a large section of the new permanent car park is open.

The upgrade of Kimberley Playground in Lane Cove is scheduled for completion in late June. The new play area features a slide, balance beams, spinners and a nest swing.

The Moocooboola Festival, Sunday 4 August

Is a huge, fun, free community event, drawing 20,000 people throughout the day. The day, starting at 9.30am, runs until 4.00pm at Boronia Park Ovals, Hunters Hill, includes a bazaar of about 120 stalls (food, health products, clothing, antiques, brica-brac, community and environmental information), there’s a double stage for music, dance and entertainment, plus allday rides and free kids’ entertainment …. it promises something for everyone.

Gladesville Shopping Village

Physical improvements such as footpath upgrades and light installations to strategic planning for land use all are part of the future direction of Gladesville.

Footpaths: In the last few months, $320,000 footpath improvements were carried out along Victoria Rd from Pittwater to Batemans Rd and should be finished by May 2019. This will create a more walkable, interesting and interactive place.

Parking: A trial of in-ground parking sensors is being considered for the Cowell Street Car Park for six months. In-ground sensors integrate with a parking app which customers download for advice on the available parking. If made permanent, the sensors can be integrated with digital parking availability signage placed at the entry to the car park.

HarbourCare Why not become a HarbourCare volunteer?

It's as easy as keeping an eye out for litter while on your daily walk, walking the dog, or joining a group pick-up day. You can sign up for as little as a week, month, year – up to you. HarbourCare volunteers keep a record of how much they collect, the date and location. Volunteers are given safety equipment eg gloves, eye protection plus assistance with rubbish collection if required. It might be unusual to think of water restrictions as we reach for our umbrellas lately. Yet last month’s rainfall was a metaphorical drop in the ocean. We need at least 100mm to help fill dams – we are a long way from that! If we all make small improvements to our efficient use of water, we’ll make real steps towards water security.

In better news, NSW people have embraced the new North West Metro, taking one million journeys and there are excellent flow-on effects. It has radically reduced peak-hour traffic in some areas.

One constituent wrote to me … “Last week the traffic on Victoria Rd going from Lane Cove to Rozelle at 7:30am was wonderful! Just like school holidays”.

A win for pet owners: Service NSW has a new online system for registering pets from the comfort of home. We’ve already had more than 90 local dog and cat owners use the online service. It also seamlessly includes a profile for missing pets – ensuring our friends are quickly returned if they wander.

Nominations for NSW Volunteer of the Year Award are now open. Our community is full to the brim with volunteers: Meals on Wheels, P&C committees, The Happy Hens, our SES Branch. This incomplete list is only a fraction of the brilliant groups serving our community. North Sydney Speech Writing Competition Winner The North Sydney Speech Writing Competition is one I run each year to encourage our young people to develop their speech writing skills and consider what it means to live in Australia.

Years five and six students were asked for their thoughts on ‘What is special about Australia?’ And Years seven and eight students were asked to outline their plans if they were Prime Minister for a day.

It was particularly inspiring to see the quality of all the speeches submitted to the competition.

It was even more special to present the winner of the senior category Sharon Jacob, who studies at North Sydney Girls High, with her first-place certificate recently at her school assembly.

Apart from receiving a certificate Sharon also received a $100 book voucher and had the honour of having her speech read out in parliament.

Sharon’s speech has now been recorded in the parliament’s official record and her vision and views will be preserved for future generations to look back and reflect on for many generations.

Keep a look out for details for this year’s competition, announced later in the year.

Peter Day tears himself away from his prolific public art practice to show the paintings and sculptures that have emerged after 53 years from his tutelage by early Australian mixed media Pop Art star Ken Reinhard, and painter Arthur Murch, one of the earliest of artists to venture into Australia’s deserts. The deserts turn up in Day’s kaleidoscopic canvases, as do beaches – often both are given an aerial view that references Aboriginal art. Reinhard’s Pop-ism can be felt in Day’s post-readymade sculptures.

Explorations of colour and light dominate this retrospective-style exhibition. Helen uses printmaking, bookbinding and related disciplines to capture colours she has observed in the landscape, in the garden, and on travels.

Will be run by Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios to enhance participants’ mental health and wellbeing through art-making. The benefits can include: connection with oneself and others, self-reflection, expression of feelings, increased physical coordination and active problem solving, a stimulated central nervous system and exploration of imagination. Art therapy can help people to ‘look’ at things in a different way.

Enrich your life Dario Falzon is passionate about oil painting and was the guest demonstrator for the May meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society. Born in 1979, Dario as a child was “always drawing”.

Dario Falzon is passionate about oil painting and was the guest demonstrator for the May meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society. Born in 1979, Dario as a child was “always drawing”.

Yet the demands of life meant this love was shelved for many years. Even now, he works full time and paints when he gets the chance. Art enriches his life and he gets to share his passion with likeminded people.

Five years at Julian Ashton School of Art honed Dario’s artistic skills. It also gave clarity to the artistic path he would follow. Oil painting was his first love and landscapes his preferred subject. Once he identified these key ingredients he sought out artists he liked. He attended classes by Kasey Sealy and Tony Whisson, all the while sharpening his own impressionistic landscape style. Art is definitely a discovery process; the lucky ones realise their own style as Dario has.

Dario is always looking for the right light! He likes to work out in the fresh air. Light leads him to select his subject.

His demonstration centred on cliffs at Wentworth Falls, aglow in the late afternoon sun. Dario usually takes a photo of his subject to capture the light at a particular moment. To etch this image into his mind, he does a quick, small sketch often in gouache (opaque watercolour). His small sketchbook revealed tiny masterpieces. At home Dario then works out the paint mixtures needed to create these scenes. He then returns to the same landscape to paint it from life. Preparation is obviously pivotal to this artist’s work.

The way an artist prepares their canvas is critical to the final result. Dario prepares small masonite boards with 36 TVO JULY 2019

Gamblin’s oil ground rather than using acrylic gesso. He applies three layers.

He discovered that using an oil ground allows the oil paint to be more vivid as it sits on the surface and is not absorbed into the ground. Dario also uses Michael Harding’s non-absorbent acrylic primer as this product gives a similar result to the oil ground primer. He uses brushes from Rosemary and Co. Donning his gloves (oil paint is toxic), Dario started with a warm wash across the whole small canvas. Pure gum turps was used for mixing the oil paint because it dries quicker than other brands. Transparent oxide red and Indian yellow were mixed, and the resulting mid-tone became an underlayer on the canvas, which produced a warm harmony throughout the painting. Over this initial wash he freely drew in the composition using another warm tone. Time was taken to get the shapes, such as the outline of the late afternoon shadows, correct.

The rest of the demonstration focused on injecting tonal qualities by adjusting the amount of white added to various mixes. More distant areas had a little more white added. ‘Lost’ edges gave a more distant effect. In contrast, sharper edges and darker tones gave clarity to the foreground sections of the work.

Interestingly, rather than using a blue such as ultramarine or cobalt for the

sky, Dario preferred to mix viridian, white and yellow ochre to produce a duck-egg blue. To achieve the colour of Australian vegetation, Dario has found that alizarin crimson is critical to the mix of yellow ochre, Indian yellow, red, viridian and cadmium yellow.

Dario’s profound understanding of his paints allowed him to capture nuanced painterly effects throughout his canvas.

Not only did the initial underlayer wash harmonise the work but the final task of lightly dancing the sky colour down through the painting brought it all together.

Art unearthed in gardens UNEARTHING fun for children Eden Gardens centre, Macquarie Park, is celebrating children and their love of nature with some child-friendly options in the holidays and as part of Eden Unearthed 2019, an art experience of sculptures and installations.

The Eden UNEARTHED exhibition is the largest privately funded exhibition of installation art set in gardens in Australia, with significant prizes for artists winning places in the competition Forty installations from sculptural pieces, textile to tactile works, interactive sound installations, are waiting to be found among flowers and foliage at Eden Gardens plant centre, Macquarie Park, from August to January – and it’s free.

The artworks all express something exceptional and ephemeral about our environment, often using recycled materials and plant products. Allan Giddy, one of the three artwork judges and Director of The Environmental Research Initiative for Art (ERIA) UNSW, said events such as Eden Unearthed arise from “a genuine desire to support and propagate visual art, [and] expand the field of practice, and also expose the general public to the latest in 21st Century visual thinking.” *

The Magic of the Garden, by Alison Thompson, transforms the regular children’s play area to encourage children’s exploration through yarn, twigs and fabric. Yarn ‘bombing’ in the trees and hand rails, hidden fairy gardens and toadstool circles as well as yarn spider webs and crocheted clouds and rainbows, will add to the garden magic.

A children’s art trail can be explored with the help of childfriendly signage and there are imaginative workshop activities.

This year was no exception when there were 10 participants from five schools in this event held early June.

All were highly praised, and deservedly so, by the adjudicators: Ms Anne Bates, Mr Nick Hossack and Mr Doug Stewart of Rostrum Clubs NSW. The winner and runner-up were Jason Tonkin of St Ignatius College and Eleanor Brooks of Mowbray Public School photographed here with RCLC President Hazel McNamara. However every participant was a winner with voucher prizes of $100 (to the winner), $70 to the runnerup, and $40 to the other eight finalists, being awarded on the night. In addition the winner’s school received $500 and the runner-up’s school $300. Well done everyone – we congratulate each of you.

Surprising Sources of Learning Religion for Atheists by philosopher and essayist, Alain de Botton, is an unlikely book choice for a Christian Minister! Yet de Botton’s premise is a fascinating one: What good ideas can atheists ‘steal’ (jacket summary) from religions? It’s a surprisingly respectful book, embracing many values which depict a Christian way of life and make for a more functional society. I prefer ‘a sharing of wisdom for the benefit of all’ approach, however. There is much to be learned from those who have different beliefs and backgrounds to our own.

Thus, it gives me pause to reflect on what Lane Cove Community Chaplaincy offers our community. Our activities are intentionally and openly about being ‘good news’ for people beyond Church structures.

At a time when there is much relational disconnection, we offer activities to enable people to come together in creative and affirming ways. No distinctions are drawn and everyone is welcomed.

Whereas I make no apology for this open approach, a danger exists of selling people short, if these community offerings are conceived to be ‘the best of Christianity’.

Creating affirming community is a good, but not our best, practice. Forming supportive community is something many churches have done well for centuries, but it is more of a by-product of Christianity. Faith in God brings so much more depth and richness than this! It produces much needed qualities such as resilience, hope for the present and the future, peace, integrity and wholeness of being, release from shame and guilt, to name a few.

I don’t lead a traditional Church - although I am supported by one. Instead, I host spaces where people can explore what Christianity has to offer them, alongside others who are doing the same.

Roberta Ryan, local governance specialist at University of Technology Sydney, to help decide how outstanding councils (that are not exempt) apply code by the end of 2019.

Linda Scott, President of local government association, Local Government NSW (LGNSW), was relieved the review gives many councils a ‘threemonth pause’ to sort out application of the code but is concerned about approvals being sped up through the comply and develop process.

“Our core concern is that the code removes planning powers from councils, which risks poor-quality dwellings to be built and alienates communities from the development process,” said MS Scott.

LG NSW upholds the role of local council planning instruments in ensuring neighbours had input into the process and that issues such as private, access and natural light for adjoining homes were properly taken into account.

What is the impact of fast fashion?

And what can we do to lessen its impact on the environment?

Fast fashion has been recognised to be a major source of a global environmental problem. It is defined as cheaply made and readily available clothing and it has changed the way we dress, the way we think about clothes and what we do with them. The average consumer buys 60% more clothing items today and wears them fewer times - sometimes not at all, and keeps them for only about half as long as 15 years ago. Majority are thrown out with household waste and end up in landfills or incinerators. Fast fashion is responsible for 500,000 tonnes of landfill in Australia alone, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which equates to 23kg of clothing waste per person per annum. Australians are the second largest consumers of new textiles after North Americans with each person buying an average of 27kg new textiles per year.

It has been reported that it takes 2,700 Litres of water to make one cotton T-shirt, that’s enough for one person to drink over the course of 3 years. Most of the new clothing is nowadays made from synthetic fibres, derived from petroleum. This is one of the reasons why the global textile and footwear

industry accounts for 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions releasing four metric gigatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Throwing away clothes is a huge waste of all of the resources in these products and it creates yet more pollution, through emissions of hazardous chemicals and greenhouse gases from incinerator stacks or landfills.

The good news is, there is something we can do about this. In order to inspire change in the way we deal with clothing, Textile Beat (2) has developed a Slow Clothing Manifesto, based on the following 10 actions: • Think, natural, quality, local, care, few, make, adapt, revive and salvage.

In other words, instead of throwing away clothes we can: • Wear them for longer • Look after them • Repair them • Restyle them • Swap them with friends • Pass them on

Increasing the lifespan of clothes reduces their environmental impacts. Here is an idea to give your unwanted t-shirts another lifecycle: turn them into reusable tote bags. All you need is an old t-shirt or singlet, a pair of scissors and 10 minutes of your time.
