Communities, virtual or real, big or as small as your family, are all about connections communication and things shared.

Many people who have made good connections for good reasons – whether it be preserving life, the environment, sustaining musical or theatrical culture or simply making time to visit otherwise isolated people – were deservedly recognised in Lane Cove Council’s Citizenship and Neighbours Day Awards and also Ryde Council’s Volunteer Recognition Awards. It’s uplifting to read of these awardees’ great deeds and know they have been recognised and thanked. These are among the people who truly make a difference and strengthen our communities.

Good communications, like shared experiences, always improve the connections.

So it’s great news that Lane Cove Council voted last month to preserve its two-hour public forum before meetings, rather than restricting numbers of speakers or topics (see story page 6). All you need do is register before the meeting.

As another communication platform, TVO this month includes several viewpoints – from bush conservator, Shauna Forrest and the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society, from architect and urban planner, Jon Johannsen, who wavers between fear and hope for the neighbourhood, and from residents’ groups keen to air their views on the St Leonards South proposal and did so on May 20. We all appreciate the area’s great assets in terms of variety in housing styles, the diverse people, business, products and services – and the wonderful choice that a concentration of people demands. Most notable among Lane Cove’s assets is that other canopy – trees. We all enjoy a leafy environment and its health benefits, yet the next generation does not seem to be taking up the baton for bushland preservation. A perfect balance is not easy to achieve in our busy urban spaces and it sounds like new blood and ideas would be welcomed.

Keep an eye out for activities on World Environment Day (magician Adam Axford in Lane Cove plaza on evening June 7 will demonstrate what you could do!) and the Gai-Mariagal Festival’s Indigenous heritage and cultural festival events, also hosted by the Council ( both page 16).

Reopened Hub like reality TV It was like a makeover on reality TV, quipped Member for Lane Cove Anthony Roberts when he re-opened the SCS Community Hub at Hunters Hill, formerly known as SCS Seniors Hub. The renovated Hub now gives seniors and people with disAbilities a vastly improved environment for activities, meetings, and skills training.

The refurbishment was funded by just under $20,000 from NSW State Government which was topped up by Sydney Community Services (SCS) funds plus about 200 hours of free labour in stripping, cleaning, filling and painting

by SCS staff, family, friends and other generous volunteers.

“I remember what this place was like,” said Mr Roberts in his speech to the crowd gathered in the Hub’s cottage-garden courtyard. “And, to be honest, it was very functional but a little depressing. But

when I walked in today and saw what you could do with $20,000, I’m amazed by the ‘before’ and ‘after’ … it’s like a TV makeover.”

“I might have to borrow some of your expertise to get maximum result for minimum effort on a few government projects,” said Mr Roberts, also Minister for Corrective Services and Counter-terrorism.

The project was managed by Catherine Morton, Community Visiting Coordinator, supported by Service Coordinators Gaynor Starkey, Alice Cheng, Christine Ho and Melodie Pike.

During the two weeks of refurbishment, the Hub managed to keep running its many programs for seniors and people with a disAbility by begging, borrowing and hiring spaces in other local venues.

The Hub runs centre-based services and skills training for seniors and people with disAbilities. Several groups of seniors including Chinese, dementia, men’s, and women’s groups come to the Hub on specific days for programs of activities and outings. Also disAbility groups of younger people meet for activities at the Hub before being taken on outings every Monday and Friday.

Branka Ivkovic, SCS Community Connections Manager, welcomed the crowd which included Mr Roberts, Mayor of Hunters Hill Mark Bennett, SCS Chairman John Devine, Peter Fay Chair of Board of Directors plus many clients, volunteers and staff who helped rejuvenate the Hub.

Public in full voice Many locals will be happy that voices at the public forum prior to council meetings will not be curtailed as was mooted, outlined in a draft code and exhibited for community consultation by Council in March.

Changes to meeting conduct have been discussed for the last few months, prompted by a new code of meeting conduct including some mandatory practices, which was prescribed late last year by the Office of Local Government. Councils are to adopt a remodelled code by mid-June.

There were concerns about a clause limiting numbers of public speakers on any item to just four speakers in favour and four against, albeit with the General Manager having an option to invite and, if necessary choose, extra speakers beyond the eight.

If those limits had eventuated, many residents worried that ideas would have been stifled.

There were 44 submissions on the draft code largely against the non-mandatory practices and strongly against restricting numbers of speakers because of the limiting effects on free speech and range of views heard, power given to the General Manager over who could speak and the draft code generally deterring residents’ involvement. Some submissions were also against the draft code’s requirement for public to register before 5pm identifying themselves, and their agenda topic or topics.

As of Council’s regular May meeting, it was resolved that ● S peakers can talk for maximum three minutes each on one or more agenda items or other topics ● T hey must register by 5pm, identifying themselves, their topic/s, and any presentation material, eg audio-visual, they wish to present, notifying council of equipment needs by noon. ● Registration can be by phone, hard-copy form or online. ● S peakers will be invited by the chair to speak in order of their registration ● S peakers can address council for a combined total of two hours ● Council can agree to extend the forum beyond two hours

Pre-registration has not been required by Lane Cove Council in the past although many councils do require it, and it’s recommended by the Office of Local Government for efficiency.

The new code does not curtail public participation and, because public can register to speak on any topic, they can raise any points they wish.

YOUR SAY - URBAN ENVIRONMENT

A path between fear and hope The emotions of fear (of change) and hope (that change can improve our lot) underlie much of our day-to-day urban life, but the underlying causes are so often clouded by fake news, misinformation and misunderstanding. And this mix often creates divisions in our community where different expectations are not met.

Political journo, Chris Uhlmann, recently commented on choices in our Federal election (now decided for better or worse depending on your political persuasion).

Uhlmann posited that the Coalition based its election platform on managing fear in uncertain times while Labor, pushing its wagon of reform agenda, were makers of a vehicle for hope in the future.

The Canopy development (formerly Rosenthal car park site) presents an interesting dilemma in managing the impact of its insertion into the heart of Lane Cove village. The massive new car park for around 500 vehicles and the need to service two new supermarkets there will generate much more traffic in and around Burns Bay Road. I fear this could create mayhem on an already overloaded road system.

The Lane Cove Structure Plan (which Council undertook a decade ago with the advocacy of Lane Cove ALIVE) identified this challenge, along with hope for a new centre linked by multiple arcades and a rejuvenated Birdwood Lane. One major ambition of the Structure Plan was a widened Coxs Lane link from Sutherland St to Epping Rd, as a way to reduce traffic pressure around the village, and it must be hoped that necessary land acquisition can be finalised for this – or Burns Bay Road itself could become a car park, too.

A similar dialogue has been running on what should be done to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris following the terrible fire there, with arguments for traditional restoration of the symbolic past on one hand – based on fear of loss of the spire’s religious and Gothic heritage – versus promoters of change and hope that the fire might be a catalyst for making an inspired contemporary replacement, as an expression of faith in a future facing many challenges.

In Lane Cove the path between fear and hope has been a meandering one over the past decade. Urban renewal has changed the village and many are concerned changes could see loss of the

After all, his background is as an academic in environment and planning law, and he has long been interested in environmental land use planning, heritage and sustainability.

As he said in his inaugural speech State Parliament of May 31, 2007: We have long battled over our environment: we have sought to explore it, to subdue it, to conquer it and, all too recently, to save it. Now the battle is about our collective consciousness and sense of justice for our environment.

But I fear that Andrew Constance MP, now Minister for Transport and Roads, might present an obstacle on that front.

Even though he commented “Errr, why are we building this rubbish?’ in connection to WestConnex, the way local community interests there were sidelined does not offer much hope for good urban design and environmental quality to win against politicians influenced more by engineers and toll operators.

Our disappearing urban tree canopy The eco-services of urban bushland and tree canopy – including producing a micro-climate – are key to sustaining the health of the local community, both human and wildlife. In this time of global warming and climate change, tiny parcels of bushland are all the more valuable and worth protecting.

To retain and protect the glorious urban bushland of Lane Cove, the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society analyses potential impacts of residential and other Development Applications adjacent to the narrow, remnant parcels of bushland that sustain the clean air, native species, flora and fauna in our neighbourhood.

In the 1970s Harry Howard transformed the local landscape as a consultant landscape architect for Lane Cove Council. Lane Cove’s landscape is unusual and significant because Howard chose to reintroduce a re-created bushland reflecting local Sydney sandstone-based vegetation as the appropriate setting for daily life. Rather than being confined to nature reserves and the periphery, bush was deemed equal to civilised life (Bull, C. 2002 Landscape Architect * ) Much of the tree planting done from the 1960s to 1970s is now reaching the end of its life, and people today are reluctant to plant trees that will become big. So bigger trees which provide the vital canopy are lost to large houses, swimming pools and unit development because these and underground carparks breach the deep soil necessary for large habitat trees.

Diary of a development Residents, developers and interested parties with much to say about Lane Cove Council rezoning proposals that pave the way for a development at St Leonards South were last month finally able to have their say at an independent public meeting with the Independent Planning Commission (IPC). Moves for the development have been ongoing since mid-2012 when Lane Cove Council resolved to develop a master plan.

Boundaries of the St Leonards South (SLS) area, formerly East Greenwich, are: Marshall Ave, Park Road East, River Road and Canberra Ave. If it proceeds, rezoning from R2 low-density to R4 high-density residential will affect boundaries and five streets between, allowing sites of 138 single dwellings there to be replaced with 2400 units, including some up to 65 metres.

Council believes its plan is a way to deliver housing required

by NSW government. Yet some residents point out that Lane Cove LGA is already set to deliver 2800 dwellings by 2021, that Lane Cove is at 138% of the housing target set by Greater Sydney Commission: 1900 dwellings by 2021. Included in that 138% are 1900 units being completed in other St Leonards developments near the highway.

As of the May 20 meeting, parties had a week to make written submissions to the IPC before it advises Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Rob Stokes, the ultimate decision-maker on the rezoning. The following timeline shows steps leading to this point …

July 2012 Lane Cove Council votes to form an SLS master plan to inform consideration of planning parameters

Oct 2012 Council votes to prepare a scoping paper for SLS master plan Nov 2012 Council resolves to invite two representatives of two groups - St Leonards/North Wollstonecraft Community Assn and Marshall Avenue Action Group – to be part of its new St Leonards committee which would help Council develop SLS master plan. Residents in between Park Lane and Greenwich Rd (part of the area considered for rezoning) were not invited to participate; those likely to consider selling were involved earlier.

Local heroes Exceptional individuals who selflessly contribute to society should not go unsung: they were recognised late May by Lane Cove’s Annual Citizenship Awards and Ryde Council’s volunteer Recognition Awards.

More than 100 people attended the Lane Cove celebration, where councillors made short speeches about the inspirational achievements of each recipient.

Council also presented this year’s Neighbour Day Awards to residents making a difference in the local area.

Barry King, Community Service Award – Barry was the backbone of Lane Cove Computer Pals and was tirelessly helped many grateful people, especially seniors, with their computer skills. Sadly Barry passed away this week – vale Barry King.

Bridget Kennedy, Citizen of the Year – champions sustainability by example throughout her life from her artworks to community projects to her home and garden. This jewellery maker refashions materials into new pieces at her gallery in North Sydney and channels 10% profits to the environment and is a co-founder of The Repair Café Sydney North which fixes all manner of things.

Dr Bronwen Dalton, Community Service Award – along with two of her Uni Technology Sydney students, Bronwen co-founded Ruff Sleepers which takes care of homeless people’s pets and offers social interaction and refreshments to owners.

Caroline Hodkinson, Workplace Council Award – Since starting with Council in 2000 in information systems, Caroline’s appetite for new applications has brought benefits across the board; she now manages Council’s IT department.

Charlie (10 years) and Grace Doran (8 years),Young Achiever Awards – heard that some kids don’t play sport because they don’t have any equipment, so they began Gear for Good, a charity to get equipment to them.

Isabelle Heim Fund, Access & DisAbility Award – The Isabelle Heim Fund is a Greenwich-based community group which for 25 years has financially helped Walter and Chris Heim support their daughter Isabelle, who’s had severe cerebral palsy almost from birth.

Burning airways Smoke from hazard reduction burns was visually obvious and affected air quality late last month – and it’s just the start of the ‘backburning’ or fuelreduction season.

It’s an important bushland practice but it seriously affects children and many people with asthma across Sydney, according to spokesman for Asthma Australia, Anthony Flynn.

“Children have small airways and any irritants like smoke can cause serious problems to their breathing,” he said.

“Yet we continue to experience the impacts of hazard reduction burns on people’s health.”

The bottom line Warning – don’t read and then complain!!

Anyone who is squeamish about their body should not read this entirely medical and frank article about anal conditions, a subject we too often choose to ignore.

The end is nearer, and more important than you think. We should be more aware of the many conditions of the anus and not only because they can be annoying! In no particular order of seriousness, and not complete, is the following list:

Anal fissure An anal fissure is a crack or split in the anal canal usually from the outer margin and into the soft internal tissue.

Anyone can get one but they are seen particularly in women and infants.

They feature sharp and severe pain on defecating, and can cause bleeding and pain if sitting on hard surfaces.

Stretching of the anus by a dry and hard stool is the usual cause. These may cut the soft tissue. Other causes include pregnancy and childbirth, a burst of diahorrea, anal intercourse and Crohn’s disease. It’s important to know that anal cancer can masquerade as a fissure.

Treating constipation with lots of fibre and plenty of water in the diet is the first thing to do. Laxatives and softeners help in the short term. ‘Rectogesic’ cream is a muscle relaxant that stops muscle spasm and allows the fissure to widen and heal. Too much cream will give a headache. Gentle washing and cleaning, heat packs, salt baths, anaesthetic cream such as Xylocaine for pain and Panadol are all helpful.

For babies, add Maltogen 1% to bottle feeding and increase fluids such as water or dilute feed.

Anal warts These are acquired sexually and can spread quickly. Best to see your doctor

about the treatment of these. They are a different strain of virus to the common wart and are very infectious.

Haemorrhoids Within the anus is a cascade of three veins serving the area internally.

Haemorrhoids develop when the vein valves fail and allow the increased pressure of gravity to distend them.

The extra pressure of opening the bowel may make them bleed fresh, bright blood, usually painlessly.

Constipation and excessive straining will make the whole thing worse. If they prolapse outside the anus, they can be mightily painful … and mean surgery eventually. Bleeding is investigated with a colonoscopy to rule out other serious causes such as cancer and the haemorrhoids are banded like a lamb’s tail during the procedure to make them drop off later.

Anal itching This is very common and is seen in children with threadworms and, mostly in men, in times of stress and in hot weather with sweating. Triggers include eczema, fungal infection from antibiotics, Jock itch [or tinea cruris], haemorrhoids, anal warts and anal fissures. Tight clothes that sweat (especially nylon clothing and pantyhose) poor personal hygiene, excessive sweating, faecal incontinence, excessive cleaning especially with soap, contact with chemicals such as the perfume in soap, powders and obesity, can all play a part.

Tips for treatment include wearing cotton gloves to bed to avoid scratching,

avoiding hot showers with excessive scrubbing, washing with ‘sorbolene’ or aqueous cream instead of soaps and drying the area gently. Regular bowel movements, gentle cleansing after passing a motion with the softest tissue you can buy or using wet cotton wool to wipe in the early stage of treatment.

If fungal, ask for Canesten cream or similar and use twice daily until the rash has completely gone.

You can make up a soothing cream from soft zinc cream, an antifungal such as Canesten cream and mild 1% hydrocortisone cream. Mix together one-third parts of each and apply up to three times a day. Using sorbolene cream to the anal area after a shower is a good practice to dry, gently lubricate and soothe the area.

Anal cancer Anal cancer can be a mimic. This is a less common cancer of the bowel.

The Australian Cancer Council records that 421 people acquired anal cancer in 2015 and 87 died of it in 2016.

Symptoms include lumps around the anus, bleeding, passing mucus, itching, pain and ulcers around the anus and trouble controlling the bowel. Go straight to your doctor if you have any of these.

Faecal incontinence About 1 in 10 people have this problem to one degree or other. There are many causes but it increases with age in both men and women equally. I’ve run out of space now, so please do see your doctor for more advice and treatment for this.

Arthritis comes in two main forms – painful, swollen and infected joints (rheumatoid arthritis) and knobbly joints associated with bone loss (osteo-arthritis). Low calcium intake - According to the Australian Health Survey (ABS), most of us are deficient in calcium, with the highest deficiency in a whopping 93% 12-18 year-old girls. Bone-bending scoliosis is common in this group.

Viral and bacterial infection - As far back as 1928, Prof. C.W. Buckley announced his discovery that “All arthropathy is a result of septic foci”. i.e. all joint pathology is caused by infection. This is mostly associated with calcification.

Calcification - Described variously as ‘bone on bone’ or ‘desiccated coconut’, calcium crystals may accumulate in joint cartilage and tendons, creating the crackling sound. The origin of this is – paradoxically – dietary calcium deficiency, where bone leaches calcium back into the blood to prevent death by heart failure.

1) Clearly, increase your dietary calcium intake by a significant amount with the correct supplement to an effective dietary plan.

3) Reduce inflammation: This may be caused by infection and calcification. We treat with FSM, targeted nutrition and herbal medicines. These may enable you to reduce your drug therapy.

4) Increase compatible protein intake, as 50% of bone is made up of a form of collagen called osteocalcin. Ideally use WP 360 whey when in recovery mode.

5) Minimise fibrosis with: FSM; a healthy, compatible food selection and an anti-inflammatory, ascorbate/bioflavonoid-rich supplement (see Science Direct, Bodemar A, 2018)

MUMS-TO-BE SHOULDN’T SHUN THE DENTIST Women often wonder ‘Is it safe to have dental work done while I’m pregnant?’

It’s natural to be cautious when you’re pregnant – you want your baby to be as safe as possible. The good news is that it’s safe to have dental work done while you’re pregnant. More importantly, it’s much better for your baby that you have good oral health. Dental infections and gum disease can be a risk to pregnancies.

If you’re planning a pregnancy, it’s always best to make sure your dental checks and any necessary work are up to date. This way you can hopefully avoid any work needed in the early months, in case you are feeling unwell.

But if you’re pregnant and due for a dental check or needing some work done, don’t put it off.

Let your dentist know if you’re pregnant Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your gums more prone to swelling and tenderness. This doesn’t mean you should ignore any gum issues because it might be gum disease developing – so your dentist needs to check and, if necessary, treat.

If you need treatment but have issues with morning sickness, discuss the best time for the work with your dentist. It may be possible to delay some work to the second trimester (four to six months pregnant), when you are likely to feel better.

The second trimester is also better for major dental work because it can be uncomfortable lying flat when you’re in the last few months of pregnancy. Your dentist will be able to advise you on what’s best for you and your teeth.

Are X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Modern digital x-rays are safer as minimal radiation is used and you, and your baby, can be protected with a lead apron.

However, at Apple Dental we choose to only take x-rays for pregnant patients when absolutely necessary.

If nothing else, x-rays can be useful in determining if dental work can actually be postponed until after the baby is born.

What about orthodontic work?

You can still have orthodontic work done but care must be taken because your gums can be more tender and inflamed due to the pregnancy hormones. Braces or Invisalign-brand treatments require very careful oral hygiene to control gum inflammation, so doing these treatments while pregnant just adds to the challenge of maintaining healthy tissues. If you’re up for the hygiene maintenance task, orthodontic work is definitely possible.

MORE IN-HOME RESTORATIVE CARE

There’s been a welcome expansion of a successful, in-home Short-Term Restorative Care program (STRC) in which a multi-disciplinary team from HammondCare works with people who are functionally declining.

There are at least three practitioners in each team but depending on needs, the team can include a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, exercise physiologist, dietician, care worker, allied health assistant and GP. The team works with people in their homes and team leader, Kylie Lemsing, says

the program often reverses declining independence in daily activities.

“If people had a fall and lost confidence or were finding some things more difficult, for example to get out of bed or shower themselves, we can work with them to find new ways of doing things at their place. Because we work in homes where the problems occur, we can see how the problems arise so advice is more appropriate, and accepted more quickly, than if we were off-site where advice might not translate so well to a particular home.”

HammondCare’s STRC teams work in north Sydney and other metro regions to help people to stay independent at home (including in an independent living unit). The STRC team prevents hospital admissions, higher levels of care or reliance on care and increases engagement and quality of life.

Clients assessed by ACAT as experiencing functional decline can be referred to the program which is delivered for up to eight weeks.

HammondCare arranges further assistance and funding on a needs basis so that when the program’s finished, clients have enough support to continue in their homes.

HammondCare doesn’t promise every function can be regained. The

team does train people to do things differently, rearranges things they commonly use or suggests home modifications or equipment to help people do things more easily. The team usually suggests people try some domestic assistance and reports that, nine out of ten times, people who otherwise would not have tried domestic assistance, find it to be more than helpful.

“For example, we were working with a lady with arthritis, doing a lot of meal prep with her to help her avoid lifting heavier implements, and we rearranged the kitchen so there were fewer obstacles,” said Ms Lemsing.

“The biggest feedback is people feel so supported in both assistance and confidence,” says Ms Lemsing.

The STRC program aims to fill a gap and not double-up on use of funding, so people are not eligible if they are on certain other programs or packages.

TIPS FOR MANAGING ECZEMA 1. Watch your diet: Reduce or avoid sugar and yeast, instead opt for oily fish, foods rich in vitamin A and E and omega-3 such as flaxseeds and walnuts. A food diary to track flare-ups in context of diet is a good idea.

2. Try supplements: Take skin-strengthening vitamin B supplements. Increase intake of omega fatty acids, hemp oil and fish oils such as cod liver oil (contains omega fatty acids Vitamin A and D).

Michelle Tabrett and family are winding up for a huge day on September 8, the Lane Cove Fun Run: as event director, she will be running the logistics and about 100 volunteers, her partner Michael will be running the music, while their boys, Oliver, 10 and Elliott, 7, will be … running.

So we chose local community charities this year.”

Michelle has been involved since the run’s inception when she and event founder, Carla FitzSimons, spent several years getting it off the ground despite hurdles of approvals for road closures.

Staging the event costs $15,000, but with help from sponsors and a council grant which pays for the biggest cost – road closures again – it returns a profit which is gratefully received by charities and their clients.

Michelle’s mother was born in Lane Cove in 1950 and she says her family are ‘old Lane Cove’, with her two sons being the family’s third generation at Lane Cove Public School on Longueville Rd. When she’s not organising massive events, this teacher who has taken a year out of her regular primary school role and retrained to teach learning difficulties is busy as an educational therapist at Sydney Therapy & Co.

There’s no longer a 10 km run because Longueville residents found it hard to live with the extra road closures but the 2km and 5km runs attract literally of thousands moving for fitness, for personal bests and … just for fun.

The Flatshare

Destined to be one of the most popular reads of 2019, The Flatshare is being deemed ‘uplit’ in publishing jargon– and it certainly is uplifting: the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Review by Jacqui Serafim Whether or not you are a fan of romcoms (and I am) you will love this uplifting and engaging debut novel by Irish author Beth O’Leary. O’Leary has knocked one out of the park with this laugh-out-loud story of two loveable characters, with an interesting premise, snappy dialogue and even some exploration of deeper issues.

Tiffy has been duped and dumped by her unfaithful, controlling boyfriend and has to find somewhere to live. Leon is a nurse who works nights at a hospice and needs extra money to help his brother. With a decent flat beyond her means, Tiffy answers Leon’s ad to share a one-bedroom flat – and a bed: Tiffy occupying it by night, Leon by day. Leon’s girlfriend tolerates this arrangement on the understanding that they are never to meet. Tiffy is colourful, chaotic, loving and outgoing. Leon is introverted and awkward as well as kind, loyal and funny. They are perfect foils for each other.

Despite the reservations of their friends, Tiffy and Leon proceed with the arrangement with hilarious, heart-warming consequences. As Leon reels from the explosion of colour that arrives in the flat with Tiffy, and Tiffy ‘panic-bakes’ her way through her emotional crisis, they begin to leave little Post-it notes for each other. Initially, these are utilitarian in nature “Please put the toilet seat down” and “Help yourself to flapjacks”. But as the notes lengthen into revealing missives, they learn about each other’s lives, thoughts and feelings. A friendship develops as they start to provide emotional support to each other. A chance, accidental meeting in embarrassing circumstances triggers attraction which ultimately blossoms into something deeper.

Tiffy and Leon are both quirky characters supported by a cast of friends and relatives who are equally interesting and well-drawn. The various subplots which draw Tiffy and Leon together enrich the characters’ lives and bring depth to the traditional ‘boys-meets-girl’ plotline. Despite its light-heartedness, the novel also addresses deeper issues: gaslighting, emotional abuse, and social injustice.

This contemporary adaptation of the epistolary format (but with Post-it notes and text messages instead of letters) is a highly entertaining way of delineating the development of Tiffy and Leon’s relationship. As the notes become longer and more intimate, their increasing closeness is revealed through their funny, touching dialogue. It is rare to find a book which addresses deeper issues while covering the comic bases, and so I thoroughly recommend it as a heart-warming winter read.

Families feud Whatever your upbringing, I’d lay odds your family traditions are sacrosanct. House rules rule. By Liz Foster In our family, when we played Monopoly, all money paid for fines, taxes etc went in the middle of the board. Whoever landed on Free Parking scooped the jackpot. Until the day we played with another family. Just as one of us went to claim our winnings they demurred. “You can’t do that,” they said!

We were dumbfounded. They might as well have said collecting $200 when you Pass Go wasn’t a thing. But guess what? They insisted on checking the official rules (a crumpled, never-referred to sheet) – and they were right. Things got quite heated and we don’t see them so much these days.

Cue a firestorm from a little old pack of Uno cards, a perennial childhood fave that manages to bridge traditional and virtual worlds. Right in the middle of the final Game of Thrones series, came a tweet about rule enforcement from Mattel’s @ realUNOgame. Previous tweets were innocent enough but this one took off into the Twittersphere faster than a speeding ticket.

The long and short of it was that you can’t stack draw-two or draw-four cards. You must pick up the two or four cards and suck it up. “We know you’ve tried it. #UNO,” they finished.

Ardent fans were outraged and maddened but the app was implacable. All pleas fell on deaf ears. (Q: What about stacking draw 2 on draw 2? A: No.) Having the conversation with a children’s game only added to the frustration. Oh, to be the Mattel staffer on Twitter that week.

People were getting totally wound up, declaring it was their game and they would play the rules the way they wanted.

I spent Easter with some family friends in the UK together with my (adult) daughter. To our horror their version of an Easter egg hunt was to divide everyone into ‘hunters’ and ‘hiders’.

That’s not how you do it, we protested, just one person does all the hiding, so everyone gets to hunt! “No, no,” they said. “Some people prefer hiding. And no swapping once you’ve drawn.”

We set about muttering under our breath but it turned out to be fun and I liked the shared load of a hider without having to remember all my hiding places by myself.

What about Scrabble’s two-letter words cheat sheet? Surely you can’t have it on hand for those times you’re stuck (who after all has ever heard of or seen an ‘oi’, which apparently is a New Zealand bird?)

Then there’s the endless first-grade squabbles over whether your hopscotch stone could land on the line between two squares?

I mean, we all know that it’s not allowed on the line. Right?

ONE HUNDRED Jim looked at the scooter lying propped against the communal clothes line. He used to have one like it, orange and compact. He would fly, crouched on the footplate, grazing the ground with one foot as he skidded around corners; that was until it got stolen.

Jim craved that lost euphoria.

He looked around, furtive, then grabbed the scooter and climbed the steep unit block driveway.

One go. That’s all.

“Hey! That’s mine!”

Busted. Think fast.

"I was just taking it inside ... in case it got stolen. You shouldn't leave things lying around." Jim tried to channel his best grumpy-old-man.

Colin lives next door. He has a long white beard and a pointy hat. We sometimes sneak to his window to try and catch him doing a spell. Mum and Dad don’t believe us, they think he’s just a friendly old man. But they must have heard the loud magical noises late last night and seen the flashing lights through the window. That was him.

Ninety-three-year-old mum had a lot on that day. Take up trousers for a friend and drop off. Afternoon tea with another friend.

Mum drove to the first friend’s house instead of walking 2km (as she usually did). She left the engine running and the car door open, trotted up the path and dropped off the trousers.

Then she walked home and baked a cake for the other friend. But where was the car?

Unperturbed she walked back to the first friend’s house where the engine was still running and the door open.

In she popped, and off she went. Simple.

We discovered the nest in a needlewood tree. A small platform of twigs and leaves built amongst the branches.

Two tiny eggs lay precariously on the flat nest. Mother bird hovered close by. "A topknot pigeon's nest!" my brother and I cried in excitement.

Each day after our discovery, we walked to the tree in our neighbour's paddock and quietly observed the mother nesting.

Rewarded weeks later, we gazed in wonder at two little fluffy pigeon chicks on the platform.

"A girl and a boy" our Dad told us.

I was travelling with a large group north of Bourke and camped at the Royal Mail at Hungerford on the Queensland border. It was 1991 and the pub was celebrating its 116th anniversary. With us on the trip was master pyrotechnician, Syd Howard, 'inventor’ of New Year’s Eve fireworks on Sydney Harbour. He offered to put on a fireworks display. Against the inky blackness of the outback night sky, the display was electrifying. I said to a young boy, probably about twelve, "I'll bet you've never seen fireworks like that, mate."

Superlative food & wine It was soup and bread for dinner tonight. Delicious home-made pea and ham, hardly gruel but almost a fast – in anticipation of things to come.

This is a big year for me because I’ll complete a marathon luxury cruisefest which will be of immense benefit to many of our Trendsetter clients.

By mid-November, all going to plan, I will have been with our group clients on two Seabourn cruises (NZ and the Mediterranean), a Regent Seven Seas cruise encompassing China, Korea and Japan, a Silversea cruise Greenwich to Barcelona, a Crystal cruise Amsterdam to Lisbon, two Uniworld river cruises (Normandy and Bordeaux) plus a little trans-Tasman jaunt on Ponant. No wonder, as you might have noted, I’m looking a little tubby of late!

Superlative food and wine experiences go hand in hand with luxury cruising and cruise lines compete on culinary strengths and fiercely market them.

Seabourn makes much of its signature caviar experience, Silversea its Relais & Chateaux relationship as demonstrated at La Dame while Uniworld highlights its quintessentially European food pedigree. Neither my hips nor I disagree – it is all too good to pass up. Sadly.

Great food is one reason our golf cruises are so popular – walk the courses and you’re getting some much-needed exercise, plus you are missing the kind of lunch you wouldn’t eat at home – two to three courses with a beverage or two.

Lunch on deck can be very seductive if you throw care to the wind.

For five-star Crystal, it is master sushi and sashimi master Nobu Matsuhisa of Nobu’s fame while the excellent local P&O offering is Salt by homegrown Luke Mangan. His is a seriously good restaurant.

Several cruise lines also teach passengers how to cook. Holland America Line and Europa both have kitchens akin to shiny laboratories where you can learn some culinary styles and tricks. If food is your passion, I can understand the combination of cruising, cooking, and dining.

I can guarantee that lessons with a chef of gourmet sensibilities will have a better outcome than lessons conducted on a Mississippi cruise … southern US

states offer myriad flavours but fine fried foods in the manner of delicate Japanese kushikatsu are nowhere to be found.

And for those on special diets? Ships’ galleys are professional to the nth degree and most cater for coeliac, gluten free, Kosher, vegan, low salt, low calorie and more. And because it is generally so appetisingly presented, travellers with dietary limitations don’t feel they are missing out. Cruising is ideal for special diets – you won’t be dissatisfied.

Of course, for every positive there is a negative and I read today that Weight Watchers has a group departure booked onboard MSC in the Mediterranean later this year. I can only think that this must be akin to torture – seeing all that food and not being able to eat most of it. Such a shame my cruising dance card is already full for 2019!

More cash for less litter Anti-litter organisation Keep Australia Beautiful NSW is offering two new $5,000 prizes to be won by ‘sustainability champions’.

Return and Earn, the NSW container deposit scheme that refunds 10 cents for every eligible drink container returned, has teamed up with Keep Australia Beautiful NSW to sponsor two $5,000 prizes for outstanding anti-litter work by groups. Festival organisers are hugely thankful to sponsors for great financial support and dealing with waste and recycling: The sun shone on early arrivals to the Hunters Hill Food and Wine Festival on May 5, and they were soon wandering Boronia Park Oval, sampling stalls, music and more. Families flocked to the action-packed rides ‘alley’ and shopped for gifts or something to nibble on while having a drink from 15 fine food providores. Later, more serious hunger was satisfied by specialities from 16 restaurants.

Considering rain was predicted well ahead, attendance was impressive yet estimated to be about 30% less than last year’s massive 9,000-strong crowd.

When rain came, shelter kept crowds happy in the stand and a big marquee in front of the stage from where music, from upbeat ballads to rock, rang out all day. Obviously enjoying themselves, most people stayed for a generally sunny afternoon. Talented young local, Jordan Richards, and bands If Not Now, Piper Street, and The Mummas & Co Community Choir, kept an audience happy under the marquee all day.

Sydney Community Services (SCS) and organisers are grateful most of the wine and food providores on the day were also generous suppliers of delicious hampers raffled at the end of the day, and to 80 volunteers from Sydney University’s Job Smart Program who helped sell many raffle tickets, and brought $6,000 proceeds.

Wines, Brown Brothers and Hungerford Hill and many newer names such as Elbourne Wines, Iron Gate Estate, Saddlers Creek Wine and Stonehurst Cedar Creek with its organic range.

Raffle prizes: A massive eighteen prizes were drawn by Len Wallis of Len Wallis Audio in Lane Cove who donated a fabulous top-of-the-line television as first prize, won by Peter Fay. The second prize was a wonderful $3,000 in travel from Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre won by Jennifer Rodda, and third was a gorgeous $500 collection of cosmetics from Estee Lauder, won by Laura Hay. Fourth prize, a picknicker's delight hamper of gourmet food, wine and a magnificent hand-quilted rug crafted by The Hunters Hill Quilters, went to Stephen Gardiner. Fifth prize, a selected wine-lover's dozen from FESQ & Company wines was won by Kieran Long. Next drawn was a 'night in' hamper of sparkling wines and gourmet chocolates to be cosily consumed under a lovely quilt by The Hunters Hill Quilters - by mysterious winner 'Ferguson'.

Dining experiences went to the next winners – seventh-drawn was Gaynor Starkey (dinner with friends at The Hills Middle Eastern Restaurant); eighth went to Max Hitchins, (dinner at The Alcott); ninth was Vivienne Skinner (dinner for two at La Piazza). Tenth prizewinner, Christy Pritchard, won an 'indulgence' hamper of pamper products, gourmet treats and wine. And yet there were another eight winners of wine hampers … courtesy of the stallholders of the day, which went to Diane (surname not supplied), Brad Hughes, Robyn Hawes, Nebil Kashro, Kate Gardiner, Tony Saunders, M. Proceeds of the raffle go to SCS which helps seniors and disabled stay independent at home. Festival proceeds of $20,000 go to Hunters Hill State Emergency Services, Gladesville branch of St John’s Ambulance Service, SCS and Hunters Hill Ryde Men’s Shed.

It was the Festival’s 20th birthday so, after many years’ practice, the event is brilliantly run and equally popular.

The Priory update

Plans to turn The Priory into a restaurant through adaptive reuse are underway. A meeting was held on May 8, 2019 with The Priory Consortium architect and heritage advisor and Council’s key planning and heritage staff. The meeting was requested by the Priory Consortium to gain an understanding of any heritage issues and impacts and discuss DA timelines relating to concept plans that were tabled for discussion. The key areas of discussion were: heritage impacts, inclusive access, landscaping and entrance points.

The Priory Consortium will take on board advice received and amend their design plans before meeting with Council’s Conservation Advisory Panel in June 2019.

The Priory Consortium expects to lodge a DA in July 2019.

This month marks the middle of 2019 - a frightening reminder of how little time there is left to achieve all we want to see happen this year!

Winter has come and evenings are cooler however, it’s no excuse to rug up and bunker down. Thanks to $50,000 from the NSW Government and an equal contribution from Lane Cove Council, Lane Cove dogs and their owners will be able to enjoy more in the great outdoors following the opening of an off-leash, fenced dog park in Blackman Park. The upgrades will also see our residents able to enjoy a broader range of activities. This will allow our youth to further chase their dreams or simply their pets!

An upgraded Community Hub re-opened on May 10 at Sydney Community Services’ base at Gladesville Rd, Hunters Hill, thanks to a NSW Government initiative to continually improving access to services for seniors and people with a disAbility.

Government funding of $19,800, in conjunction with Sydney Community Services funds, went to updating and renovating spaces used by SCS clients.

65th Hunters Hill Art Exhibition The 65th Hunters Hill Art Exhibition was a great success, showcasing diverse artworks in the Town Hall, which was beautifully transformed into an art gallery for the nine-day exhibition in mid-May. Thank you to all the sponsors for their support and the volunteers and staff for their contribution to this wonderful exhibition. The artworks can be viewed via www.huntershill.nsw.gov. au

Hunters Hill Food & Wine Festival 2019

The Hunters Hill Food & Wine Festival celebrated its 20th year bringing fine wines, gourmet foods, produce and live entertainment to the large and enthusiastic crowd of locals and visitors who flocked to Boronia Park on Sunday, May 5. This fabulous charity event run by volunteers has raised thousands of dollars in aid of NFP community groups and emergency services since 1999.

The transformation was guided by research on best practice in dementia care. The money was complemented by donations from local community members including a new TV, artwork, furnishings and many, many hours of volunteer work! This Community Hub enhances the health and well-being of our seniors and people with disAbility by connecting them with their local community. The upgrade has provided a user-friendly space that’s supportive, calming and safe for our clients, especially those with dementia. The NSW Government in the Lane Cove Electorate is committed to supporting seniors, ensuring our oldest and often wisest members can access the best quality support.

Sydney Community Services is a busy centre which runs centre-based services for seniors and people with disAbilities. Several groups of seniors including dementia, men’s and women’s groups come to the Hub on specific days for a program of activities and outings. Also disAbility groups of younger people meet for activities at the Hub before being taken on outings every Monday and Friday. Please get in touch (on 02 9427 6425) if you are interested in further details of these or other services for seniors, people with disAbility and their carers.

We live in such a wonderful democracy and election campaigns remind us of the core principle of our system – each person’s views and vote are as important as the next. When we queue at polling places, we do so as equals.

I’ve just visited the Opening Night of an interesting exhibition at Gallery Lane Cove by former artist-in-residence, Travis de Vries. His work also features in the program for this month’s Gai-mariagal Festival. Hopefully you too can participate in some of the festival’s events (more details below).

For our wonderful local creative community, I am excited to announce some changes to the annual Lane Cove Art Show to be held in late August. A ‘best in show’ non-acquisitive prize of $5,000 will be awarded by Council for the first time this year, so I hope this will encourage some wonderful entries.

As always, many people have written to me over the past month and I love to receive your feedback. One popular topic concerned proposed changes to the way in which Council’s Meetings are conducted. I am pleased to say that we listened to you - our Meetings will remain largely unchanged and continue to offer an open forum for residents to voice any concerns.

I also received a heart-warming letter from the Mayor of our sister city, Gunnedah. The drought has not yet broken but the community is feeling more optimistic. Enough rain has fallen to enable winter crops to be planted. He wrote to sincerely thank the Lane Cove community for their fundraising efforts to assist the area’s drought-affected families.

Exhibition The Hidden Garden – Travis De Vries

In this workshop, artist Travis de Vries (whose Hidden Garden exhibtion is showing until June 29) takes participants through his techniques to create finished artwork. Using distinctly contrasting methods of oil and medium with washes along with a linear painterly style, the participants will learn Travis’ process of transforming a blank canvas to a finished piece of art.

The Hidden Garden is a solo exhibition, based on the artist’s Indigenous reinterpretation of the Adam and Eve fable. Just go for it Outstanding watercolour artist, Tony White, was guest demonstrator for the April meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society (LCAS). Tony was relaxed, prepared and passionate about creating emotionally charged, impressionistic landscape scenes. Not surprisingly, he inspired his audience.

With little fanfare Tony commenced his demonstration. Advice was given regarding materials. Although he was using Arches 300gsm rough paper for this demonstration, he suggested Saunders Waterford 300gsm rough was also very appropriate. The paper has to be thick enough to “hold the water” without buckling. He uses a soft pencil for initial sketching (2B was used for this demonstration). Professional quality Art Spectrum and Holbein watercolour paints are his preferred brands. His palette already had the colours laid out. Indigo, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, Australian red gold, alizarin crimson, pyrrole red, ultramarine, Tasman blue, cobalt turquoise, jaune and lavender were all waiting to become part of a French country landscape scene Tony had selected for tonight’s presentation.

A variety of brushes were used throughout the demonstration.

These included calligraphy brushes, Jackson’s Artica 12,16 white synthetic, Montmartre 4 traditional mop, a fan brush and Alvaro Castagnet NEET 8 4400. Herein lies the magic of the creative process. Tony’s intuitive approach to watercolour gained from his vast experience allows him to select the brush that will make the desired mark. Large brushes with mop heads, medium pointy brushes, fan brushes and old battered brushes with dishevelled “heads” were all used.The last brush gave fabulous, abstract tree shapes in Tony’s relaxed hand.

Painting started once the initial sketch of the French landscape scene was done.

confident strokes were used over wet paper. “Keep it light initially,” remarked Tony. “If you are not happy, don’t let it dry – spray it.” Water can be forgiving as it can act as an eraser when painting with colour in water!

Tony was working on a board that was propped up at a suitable angle. Tone was strengthened as the foreground was approached. Nothing was laboured – “just get it done”. Tony seemed to be having fun haphazardly going back into wet areas of the painting and scattering marks intuitively. He did this constantly as the painting progressed.

The foreground areas became much stronger tonally.

“Never be a slave to the reference photo. It is only a guide to your own mark making,” commented Tony. Tweak compositional elements. Be mindful of colour temperature, he advised. Tony harmonized his work by using the same colour throughout sections of the work, making it cooler or warmer depending on whether background or foreground areas were being painted. “If runs occur, just embrace them!” Tissues and a spray bottle were in constant use as the painting developed, stemming or encouraging the flow of the watercolour.

The watercolour artist has to be so mindful of how wet the surface of the paper is before paint is added. A wet surface encourages bleeding – great for misty effects and soft edges. A drier surface is needed if hard edges are to be painted. As the painting emerged, Tony added and subtracted areas using tissues, a palette knife, his fingernail and a host of different brushes. He was assessing the artwork constantly,

pushing and pulling elements throughout the work until he had achieved his desired emotional response to the subject.

“Be aware of the direction of light – then add the shadows.” In addition, he suggested it’s important to leave little holes in the washes to hint at specks of light. The rough paper surface assists in achieving this outcome. Final details were added with finer brushes redefining areas of the work. Highlights were added with jeune, a mix of white and burnt sienna. It is opaque.

Titanium white is also used sparingly at this stage. In a relatively short space of time, Tony had produced a beautiful watercolour depicting a very scenic landscape from the south of France.

So where did Tony’s interest in watercolour start? As a teenager – his neighbour was a watercolour artist and she gave him some lessons! The immediacy of the medium had him hooked. Decades later Tony has returned to this genre and taken it to new heights. We could all learn from his approach to watercolour. Don’t see it as a daunting medium. Instead, be relaxed, enjoy and have fun. Thank you, Tony, for presenting such an enjoyable evening of art to the LCAS. HUNTERS HILL THEATRE

Hunters Hill Theatre Plays On! Play On! is a hilarious love letter to community theatre and all who’ve played in it, however large or small a part. And Lane Cove locals, Susan Mozell, Blake Eaton and Mark Massingham are all playing a part.

The comedy tells of a plucky community theatre group desperately trying to produce a murder mystery play with a plot which doesn’t actually have a murder, a maddening, interfering playwright who keeps changing the script, and an increasingly disgruntled cast and crew.

All your typical ‘theatre types’ make an appearance in this romp. The Director, played by Susan Mozell) along with Stage Manager (Carol Keeble) and Lighting and Sound Technician (Frances Etheridge), work furiously to keep on top of the Playwright’s (Anthea Brown) script changes and keep her out of the way of the bickering cast.

In three acts, the audience witnesses a rehearsal of the dreadful show Murder Most Foul (Act 1), a disastrous dress rehearsal (Act II), and the ‘Opening Night’ performance (Act 3), in which anything that can go wrong, does. If you liked Noises Off!, the Play That Goes Wrong, or have ever been a part of a community theatre production, chances are you’ll love Play On!.

Hunters Hill Theatre (HHT) now presents four productions a year. This proud community group has performed continuously ever since it was founded in 1930 as the Hunters Hill Play Reading and Dramatic Club. Staffed entirely by members and volunteers, led by the committee and current President Christopher Hamilton, HHT is proud to support the Marist Sisters' College’s theatre studies program by including students in several productions a year.

HISTORY IN THE CROSSHAIRS The problems of preserving our history Shared personal history enhances our common culture, collective psychology, human identity. Yet when someone approaches a person with a notepad, most people are reluctant to open up— despite the fact that they just posted a pic of their breakfast on Face Book.

In a way their FB post has made a tiny contribution to social history but how does 'history' work on Face Book?

As a post from Christchurch recently showed—sometimes it works horribly.

In the digital age, the problems of what constitutes social documentation, who owns it, and, how long it survives, pose serious questions for us, and for the study of history in general.

Twitter captures over 500 million tweets per day and, even though every tweet ever tweeted has been archived, how are those archives going to become a researchable resource for historians to survey in any meaningful way?

Social analysis tool, Topsy, claims in its advertising that historians can ‘analyse conversations from last week, last month—even years ago’. Has Topsy, or any Cloud storage host for that matter, considered what will happen in 2119.

The enemies of historical records - fire, flood, war and revolution – are now joined by technological shifts such as changing formats, lost hyperlinks, and private commercial ownership regulations which make vast caches of digital material untraceable.

What can we do about this? We can at least take some time to secure our family histories or the achievements of our community in a coherent way.

For historians, contemporary sources created in digital formats are especially vulnerable. Consolidate your family documents. Make sure family media from old digital platforms are updated or transferred to hard copy (they can always be rescanned). Do not just let them go—beware the ‘delete’ key which, as Weller said, “has a dangerous potency when it comes to historical evidence”.

The opposite problem is posed by those random faces looking out from surviving sepia prints. The older members of your family should be asked to identify these 38 TVO JUNE 2019

people and give a short account of what they know about them. It is important they be identified and given their story.

It is easy to build up a family social history in this way, and a great reason to chat and connect with people you might otherwise miss.

It’s been a full-on week for me. Suddenly everything has come at once, with a family crisis calling for my attention in the midst.

With many demands swirling in my head, my sleep is also somewhat disturbed. But it’s okay, because it is just for a season and rest is coming. I am about to hit the pause button and take some time out for a one-day retreat.

Tomorrow, I am going to the Blue Mountains for a day and taking eight people with me to enjoy the experience. It’s a time to nurture the spirit, let the mind run free, while nourishing the body - with some optional light exercise thrown in.

It always amazes me how much better I feel after a short break. As one who enjoys multiple activities, sitting still and deliberately being slow can be an anathema.

Yet the reverse is true. Give me a flat rock in the sun with a view of nature, or a seat by a good fire with something to gently ponder and it’s close to heaven for me. Add in delicious food and company between sessions and I reckon I’m there!

Hence, Lane Cove Community Chaplaincy offers a diversity of contemplative activities. Weekly meditation is held Thursdays at 11.30am-12.15pm. Our 90-minute Sunday afternoon ‘Walk and Wonder’ is intentionally contemplative, connecting us with nature and each other.

Contemplative spirituality offers enough space for people holding different beliefs to come together peacefully and find refreshment.
