It is hard to believe that 2016 is now upon us, but as we start the year afresh I look forward to all the exciting opportunities that the new year brings including improvements to pedestrian access and change room facilities at Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre, design progress on the Rosenthal Avenue car park project, new Open Space and Cultural plans, new community spaces at Little Lane and Centenary celebrations for Greenwich Baths. Our Council is starting the year business as usual however please find important information below on how you can have your say on the future of Council in 2016 and beyond. It is hard to know what the year will bring but Council will continue to advocate for the best outcome for its residents. Please take the opportunity to have your say on the State government’s plans to merge Lane Cove with Hunter's Hill and Ryde councils as it is our understanding that this could take place well before the end of this year if the State government rubber stamps its proposal. REMEMBERING MAL LENNON
It has been a sad start to the year with "Commander" Mal Lennon, a previous Club Captain of the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club, recently losing his life at sea whilst steering a yacht off Port Stephens. Mal lived his early life in Longueville and started sailing in the early 60's. He was Club Captain for many years, and will be sadly missed by Club members. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. LITTLE STREET CAR PARK NOW OPEN
200 car parking spaces are now available in the car park off Little Street. The car park has been opened while construction continues on the upper levels. As a result there are temporary arrangements in place for pedestrian and parking access. In the coming months a pedestrian footbridge will be constructed across to the Aquatic Centre with a connection to the internal lift on each floor of the car park. In the interim the exit via ground floor at Little Lane is the designated pedestrian exit. I would urge all car park users, in particular those with children, to be using this route – pedestrian access in and out of the main car entry is extremely unsafe. Upon the completion of the footbridge the lift will become fully operational on all levels and pedestrian access to the Aquatic Centre will improve. To avoid the unnecessary delay in providing access to car park spaces Council has opened the car park only and urges members of the community to respect the temporary arrangements for the safety of themselves and other pedestrians. BACK TO SCHOOL
With schools now back for 2016 I would like to remind motorists to take care in and around school zones, particularly at pedestrian crossings. Parents can also start the year off on the right foot by being positive role models during the school drop off and pick up times. Traffic restrictions around schools are designed to keep everyone safe so please obey the No Stopping and No Parking signs. No Stopping means exactly that, the area is likely to have issues with visibility or safety so cars should not stop there, even for a few minutes. No Parking signs are in areas where you can stop for two minutes but you must remain within three metres of your vehicle. I encourage everyone to stay safe by obeying the signs and taking care on all roads, including those in and around our Lane Cove schools.
NOMINATIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP AWARDS CLOSING
Council is seeking nominations for the 2015 Citizenship Awards. This could be a volunteer, someone who has excelled in their field, a local business, community group or special individual who deserves recognition for their efforts. To find out more, visit Council’s website or call 9911 3591. Nominations close on Monday 29 February 2016. JOYFUL CHRISTMAS
While the festive season may seem like a long time ago I wanted to make mention of how wonderful it was to see so many Christmas celebrations in Lane Cove. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer to members of St Columba’s and Kamilaroi Retirement Villages in Mayoral visits in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I hope that residents of Lane Cove also enjoyed time with family and friends across the holidays.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody in the North Sydney electorate a very happy New Year. I hope that over the Christmas and New Year break you were able to spend quality time with your friends and family. I was elected at the North Sydney by-election on 5 December 2015 and formally commenced my term following the declaration of the poll on 22 December. It is truly an honour and privilege to have been elected by the people of North Sydney as their representative in the Australian Parliament. I am very cognisant of the trust and responsibility bestowed upon me to deliver the best possible outcomes for the North Sydney community. I have moved into my office and have already held a number of meetings with local residents and community organisations. I also appreciated the opportunity to visit some local schools as they marked their achievements on presentation days. I have been a passionate advocate for our community, be it as a Councillor or through my involvement in local community organisations, and I am indebted to the people of North Sydney for giving me an opportunity to represent them. I will be an energetic, hard working local representative for everyone in our electorate. I am now looking forward to meeting with many of you over the course of this year, be it at local
PROPOSED COUNCIL MERGERS
On 6th January 2016 the NSW Government formally submitted a proposal for an amalgamation of Hunters Hill Council with Lane Cove Council and Ryde City Council. The detailed merger proposal can be found at www. councilboundaryreview.nsw.gov.au. As there will be no public poll or vote, it is important for residents to have an opportunity to voice their concerns. Submissions are due Sunday 28 February 2016. Council encourages residents to make a formal written submission. Shortly, a sheet outlining advantages and disadvantages will be online and distrubuted to households to allow you to make an informed judgement.
PUBLIC MEETING
The Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition (SHHMC) will be convening a public meeting in the Town Hall on
Tuesday 23 February, 2016 commencing at 7.30pm
to discuss the amalgamation proposal. Details will be available on their web site http://savehuntershill.org. I would urge you all to take up those opportunities and also to write to our local Member of Parliament, the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP, and to the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Paul Toole MP, to make known your views on the proposed merger.
AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS
On 26 January we had a fantastic Australia Day Celebration at the Deckhouse at Clarkes Point. One of the privileges of being Mayor is conferring citizenship on local residents and Australia Day is a particularly special day to become a new citizen. Twelve members of our community community functions, school presentations, at the local shopping villages and around the electorate at train stations and cafes.
As a person dedicated to community service, I am excited about my role as a local Member and the opportunity to assist residents with their individual concerns and enquiries. Be it to do with tax, immigration, the environment or Centrelink, my office is here to help. I can’t promise to deliver the outcome that you seek on every occasion but I will do my level best to help cut through what can often be the daunting processes of government. So that I can effectively reflect the views of your community, it is also important that I hear your feedback on how the government is going, your opinions on individual policy matters, or your ideas to make our local community an even greater place to live. If you do wish to get in touch, please do not hesitate. I have included my office contact details for your information. All the best for a successful 2016. I look forward to working for you in the community and the Australian Parliament.

The Committee was also responsible for organising the Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Service as well as the Dedication of the restored Howitzer by the Governor. I would also like to congratulate local resident Mrs Christine Jensen OAM who received recognition in the Order of Australia General Division, for her service to the Anglican Church Community in Sydney.
