Our passion for hy is ‘stuff’ so cheap? It’s become so normal that we’re probably used to it by now, but sometimes you need to say the words out loud, “These jeans are $10. This kids t-shirt is $3.50.” It seems unbelievable.

CHANGING ECONOMICS The times have definitely a-changed. A woman I know (a child of the 70s) remembers shopping with her mother as a teenager. “We’d often go and ohhh and ahhh over all the expensive clothing.” If I expressed interest in something, my mother would inspect it (as a keen sewer) and declare “I could make that for half the price!.” Now, when we shop, she’ll pick something up and declare “You couldn’t make it for that.” Quality notwithstanding of course.

If it seems that clothing is cheaper than ever, that’s because it is. The NSW Parliamentary Research Service investigated relative price movements by CPI expenditure group between 2004-2014. Reporting on their findings in the November 2014 report “Rising cost of living: myth or reality?”, they found that the cost of clothing and footwear has decreased while all other groups increased.

But what does this mean?

As clothing becomes cheaper, the apparel business becomes all about the numbers. It’s a volume game. Low quality and high volume.

It’s known as ‘fast fashion.’

Or landfill fashion, with the cheap prices and low quality of some items earning the nickname of ‘McFashion’.

And it seems many of us have a passion for McFashion. It can be oh so tempting.

THE ‘EVOLUTION’ OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY Shannon Whitehead, founder of Factory45, an accelerator program that takes sustainable apparel companies from idea to launch, talks about the modern fashion industry in her August 2014 article “5 Truths the Fast 4 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I N0. 248 I FEBRUARY 2016

Fashion Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know”.

According to Whitehead, there was a time when there were two fashion seasons – spring/ summer and fall/winter. Since 2014, the fashion industry operates in “micro-seasons”.

And there are 52 of them each year.

So consumers are no longer ‘out of fashion’ as seasons change twice a year, they’re out of fashion each week. And the only way to stay on trend is by accessing the revolving door of fast fashion – buy more, every week.

Exhausting.

The world now consumes a staggering 80 billion pieces of clothing each year.

This is up 400% from two decades ago.

McFashion is cheap and low quality. So not only is the garment ‘off trend’ from one week to the next, it’s unlikely to last from one week to the next. The simple fact is that much fast fashion doesn't survive more than a few washings. And as a consumer, what’s the point in looking after something when you can just toss it and buy a new one. We don’t buy items with a view to last now. Our relationship with clothing has changed.

ENOUGH ALREADY! Many of us, realising our wardrobes can no longer comfortably hold their contents, commit to de-cluttering. This can be a welcome process.

And while some things are immediately thrown into the bin, there’s usually a lot that is donated to charity. This also gives the declutterer a feeling of do-gooder’s euphoria.

But what do charities do with the donations?

The National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations (NACRO) offers some insight. Of the post consumer waste recovered by charities: l6 0% consists of items of clothing that can be re-worn or reused, l 1 5% can be torn into industrial wiper cloths, and l2 5% is unusable and sent to landfill However, the decline in clothing quality impacts these figures. The percentage of items that can be re-worn or reused is shrinking.

And the landfill grows.

YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW HOW THE SAUSAGE GETS MADE There is a saying that goes something like this, ‘you don’t want to know how the sausage gets made.’ This is a glib analogy for the innerworkings of the fast fashion industry, but fairly accurate nonetheless – fun to buy, fun to wear, but do you want to know how, exactly did it get there?

While we don’t spend too much time thinking about it, we likely know that someone, somewhere, is getting a raw deal if we’re buying a t-shirt for $3.50. Keeping in mind that that $3.50 still lets the supply chain make a buck (or two) on the way through.

You may have noticed the ‘made in Bangladesh’ tags on some (or many) of your clothes. Since 2008, production of clothes for the Australian market has increased by 1,500 percent. The demand for the low cost of production found in Bangladesh means that it may soon overtake China as the largest global garment producer.

So why Bangladesh? Worldwide minimum wages in the garment industry are reported in Tara Donaldson’s article in Sourcing Journal Online’s “2014: Global Sourcing to be More Costly as Worldwide Minimum Wages Continue to Rise”. Here she reports the wage rate in Bangladesh is the lowest in the world.

The Bangladeshi government agreed upon a new salary structure that took effect on Dec. 1 2013. This structure announced that the new minimum wage would be set at $68 (USD), a

77 percent increase from the previous rate of $39 (USD). A member of Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity, Kalpona Akter, told SBS News that on average factory workers do a sixday week, working shifts of about 12 hours. So that $68 is an hourly equivalent of 24c.

Even when adjusted for lower costs of living in these countries, these rates are not a living wage. In Bangladesh a fair living wage is thought to be US $104 per month.

Compare this to the average pay of a seamstress in Australia which, according to Payscale.com (the world’s largest database of salary profiles), is $19.78 per hour. The economics for profit driven companies are stark.

DANGEROUS CONDITIONS The world’s attention turned to Bangladesh when, in April 2013, the Rana Plaza garment factory collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This disaster resulted in the death of 1,132 garment workers and focused on the conditions endured by these workers who produce much of the west’s (and the world’s) fashion.

FEATURE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Rana Plaza acted as a flashpoint bringing ethical production to the forefront of the media and broader community discussion.

Since that time (and facing mounting pressure), more than 200 apparel brands, retailers and importers have signed the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Accord. Although only 12 on this list are Australian. (Though some of these Australian signatories represent multiple brands.) The Accord is an independent, legally binding agreement in which over 1600 factories are inspected and safety training conducted. It also allows workers to refuse to work in dangerous buildings and compels brands to fund repairs.

These conditions are apparent in factories that produce garments across a range of price points. Nearly all brands are affected – it doesn’t matter how expensive the price tag. Brands from Kmart to Ralph Lauren source garments from Bangladeshi factories (and other low cost production centres).

Though it’s not a case of ‘don’t know, don’t care’. A 2013 survey by Oxfam Australia found almost 70 percent of Australians would pay more for clothes if they knew overseas workers were paid a decent wage and had safe conditions. A further 81 percent think Australian clothing companies have a responsibility to ensure overseas workers are paid enough to cover basic needs (such as food, clothing, housing).

SO, WHAT’S THE ANSWER? There are a number of possible responses to stories like this. Some shrug and think there is nothing they can do to improve things. Others think “Oh God, not another tragedy…” And still others may be galvanized to action to influence decision-makers directly.

The answer is not to stop buying clothes with the ‘Made in Bangladesh’ label. Such a step would immeasurably damage the lives of those working in the garment industry. They are mostly women, wanting a better life for themselves and their families.

Stop buying completely? Completely unrealistic. Though it might be good to stop bingeing. There is something to be said, for the ‘pause, consider, think’ approach to buying.

But how to make better buying decisions?

You’d rather put your money into a company that’s thinking about more than its bottom line. One that considers its supply chain and workers.

commit to hours or days of research trolling through annual reports and news stories to find information to make the ‘best choice’.

In the wake of the Rana Plaza collapse, the 2013 Australian Fashion Report was released. This report, produced by Baptist World Aid grades companies based on their policies, supply chain traceability, monitoring programs and worker rights.

Companies are awarded a grade from A to F based on their performance.

The 2015 Australian Fashion Report added a further category, assessing whether companies are paying a wage that meets their workers’ basic needs and found only 9 percent of fashion brands are paying their workers a living wage.

This report is extensive in its view of the fashion industry investigating 59 apparel companies that supply 219 major global and domestic fashion brands in Australia.

The organisation uses a combination of responses to surveys sent to companies and publicly available information. Some companies choose not to respond. In 2015, this figure was around 25 percent.

While improvements have been measured since the first report in 2013, there remains work to be done. Some 91 percent of companies did not know where all their cotton comes from and 75 percent did not know the source of all their fabrics. Most companies do not carry out regular random inspections or have a system in place for workers to raise complaints. Only two companies proved they paid a full living wage.

Gershon Nimbalker, Advocacy Manager at Baptist World Aid says that “it doesn’t take much for the end-consumer to make a difference to the lives of those making our clothes. Research shows an additional 30c per t-shirt would ensure living wages

are met in Bangladesh.”

Importantly, some Australian companies have made significant improvements.

Since 2013, Kmart and Cotton On have improved their traceability of suppliers throughout their supply chains and Country Road and the Sussan Group have improved worker wages.

Though one of the worst overall performers was the Just Group, owner of stores including Just Jeans, Portmans, Jacqui E and Peter Alexander, who received an overall D-grade, with an F-grade for worker rights. Also performing badly was Best & Less receiving a D-grade and Lowes receiving an F-grade.

The 2015 Australian Fashion Report has an accompanying Ethical Fashion Guide that can be downloaded or ordered in hardcopy from www.behindthebarcode. org.au. This guide has the full list of companies and brands with their grades.

Another organization takes things a step further. Good On You is a social enterprise created by Ethical Consumers Australia and provides an app that “helps you choose brands that have a positive impact on people, the planet and animals – and to avoid brands that don’t deserve your money.” It provides ratings for more than 1,000 brands showing how each performs on labour rights, the environment and animal protection. Development of the app was funded by a successful crowdfunding campaign in July 2015. www.goodonyou.org.au So help is at hand. Use the tools available.

Be more aware. Put more pressure on the brands you like and buy. Because, according to Daisy Gardener, Oxfam's corporate accountability and fair trade adviser, Australians are lobbying firms and it counts. u

Beekeeping in your backyard

Honey; the humble spread, once a staple and slathered on toast or drizzled on warm porridge, has become a revolutionary health food.

It is promoted for use in place of sugar for its health benefits and has long been touted as nature’s sweetener. As honey has grown in importance, the range and diversification of flavours and means of production has grown too. No longer is the choice between two brands at your local supermarket, there are dozens of brands and techniques which all claim far superior health benefits than others.

Full of enzymes and probiotics honey has long been used for its medicinal purposes. Popular in tea or eaten straight from the jar, honey is great for relieving sore throats, reducing inflammation and is anti-bacterial. Not to mention it tastes great on just about anything!

So where does honey come from?

Bees collect nectar from around 100150 flowers and store it in their second stomach, which is designed to hold nectar only. It is then passed on to worker bees who spread it around the honeycomb. The bees then flap their wings repeatedly to dry out the liquid making it into thick syrup. Once it is gooey, the honeycomb is sealed off with a piece of wax and stored until eaten.

While bees are most notoriously known for their production of liquid gold, bees play an incredibly important part in the environment. According to the NSW Apiarists’ Association (state body for commercial beekeeping) one of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators, such as bees, for a successful harvest. They help to pollinate food crops to feed us and livestock.

This recognition of the role bee’s play coupled with its health benefits have led to households starting up their own beehives. NSW is Australia’s biggest beekeeping state and there are around 3,000 registered beekeepers in NSW alone.

What does it take to start up a beehive?

First of all you’ll need the right equipment such as extractors, protective clothing, tools, smokers and hive building and maintenance material.

The whole start up can cost around $1000. Choosing the right location is also essential. Choose a spot away from high activity areas, such as footpaths, pools, laundry and barbecues. Joining a local beekeeping club and participating in a course to get you up to speed and understand the basics of beekeeping is highly recommended. To find a club near you visit, http://www.beekeepers. asn.au/. The Urban Beehive, run by team Doug and Vicky sets up and maintains beehives all over Sydney.

They also run courses on beekeeping to help get you started. They cover the basics such as Honeybee biology and behaviour, demonstrate all equipment required, regulations and location placement, how to handle bees and finishes off with a practical session on site. Maintaining over 70 beehives in backyards and rooftops they are passionate about beekeeping and know their stuff. “Our interest in beekeeping is about supporting pollinators in the urban environment of Sydney. Bees play an important role with the local flora, such as fruit and vegetables of people’s gardens and we get to talk to many residents about pesticide use and how it can adversely affect bees and other insects. Many places where we keep beehives such as restaurants and hotels use the honey on their menus and other places we sell the honey back on site, so that locals can purchase and taste what the honey is like in their area”. Benefits of a beehive Apart from the obvious one, having your own endless supply of fresh sweet

honey, it is also hugely beneficial for your garden especially if you have your own fruit and veg patch. Bees will pollinate your garden which will encourage more seeds and therefore more produce! Another by product is beeswax, which can be used to make your own lip balms, or candles. For Doug and Vicky maintaining a beehive means that you are supporting the local bee population and you get your own honey. “It's always a surprise to see what flavours of nectar the bees are bringing in from season to season.” Not everyone in an urban environment can keep bees so they suggest planting bee-friendly flowers and flora in the neighbourhood.

And tackling the main question over safety, Doug and Vicky tell us “Bees are not dangerous if you become a responsible beekeeper by being aware of the placement of the beehive and keeping placid bees who are not overly defensive.”

Local Lane Cove resident, Peter Horton says the biggest benefit of beekeeping is “extraction is fun and rewarding especially if you do it with a couple of people to share the work and the experience. It's a great feeling of accomplishment ending up with honey that you can sell or give to friends or enjoy at your leisure.” He was inspired to set up his own beehive as he enjoyed seeing nature at work and producing such a beautiful product.

SMALL BUSINESS A Cyber Criminal’s Target Cybercrime is increasing at epidemic proportions from consumers to large corporations, however you may not be aware that Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) are becoming the cybercriminal’s “sweet spot”. SMBs have a number of unique characteristics which make them an attractive target for cyber criminals.

Firstly, SMBs have sufficiently valuable information to make an attack worthwhile - mostly credit card and personal/identity information of their customer base.

Secondly, most SMBs have a very low level of network security, making them an easy hack. This is primarily due to the fact that most SMBs don’t engage an I.T. specialist with cyber-security credentials to build and maintain a secure business network. A recent small business study by the National Cyber-Security Alliance found that 90% of SMB organisations did not have professional IT managers on staff, much less cyber security specialists.

Apart from stealing customer data and financial information, SMBs are also being targeted by ransomware malware such as Crypto-locker. Crypto-locker is an advanced form of malicious software that encrypts the hard drive of the infected PC. A hacker then extorts money from the PC owner, forcing them to pay a ransom through online payment methods to regain access to their own data. Cryptolocker malware can enter a business network through an infected file or e-mail.

A common way for these files to infect a business is via an attachment on an e-mail which will often represent a bogus invoice, receipt or notice. It is important to remain vigilant when opening e-mails and particularly attachments - unless you know the sender, you should not open

an e-mail attachment, as the simple act of opening the attachment can unleash malware across your business network.

Cyber criminals utilising crypto-locker malware have been targeting Australian businesses with vigour, due to the high rates of infection, thus increasing their financial return. According to the ABC, the ACCC received in excess of 2500 complaints during 2015, resulting in an estimated $400,000 in ransoms being paid to cyrpto-locker hackers. However, this is acknowledged as being just the tip of the iceberg, with most attacks still not reported to authorities. Like physical security, cyber security requires several layers of protection to create a robust barrier.

Just as you wouldn’t lock your front door and leave your windows open, it’s important to lock down all entry points to your network. While a simple antivirus solution may have been considered adequate protection for a SMB in years past, we now need to employ a range of specialised cyber-security technologies to create an effective barrier. Thankfully, it is now easy for SMBs to protect their business with enterprise-grade cyber protection with specialised small business cyber security solutions.

When selecting a SMB cyber security solution, look for a product that is preconfigured by a specialist cyber-security

vendor, incorporating a subscription for regular updates. An annual subscription will help to keep your business protected against emerging threats and new forms of malware. You should also look for a solution that includes Anti-bot protection.

Botnets are a form of malware that enables your PC to be remotely accessed from an external command centre. This is primarily how Crypto-locker operates.

Effective cyber security is achieved through the implementation of a range of technologies.

Here’s a checklist for your SMB security solution: FIREWALL: Ensures that only the traffic that should be allowed on the network traverses the network. Prohibited traffic is blocked before it ever enters the network.

ANTI-BOT: Blocks botnets from communicating to their command and control centre for further malicious activity.

INTRUSION PREVENTION SYSTEMS (IPS): Searches traffic for attacks targeting business computers and devices.

ANTI-VIRUS: Helps to prevents malware such as viruses and worms which are prevalent and can cause major damage.

ANTI-SPAM: Prevents unwanted email which is an issue for any business.

APPLICATION CONTROL AND URL FILTERING: These capabilities work together to ensure that only allowed applications are used on the network and that only allowed websites can be visited.

USER AWARENESS: Allows an organisation to have policies in place that will allow or prohibit what specific people can do, based on their identity or role in the business.

NOMINATIONS CALL OUT FOR CITIZENSHIP AWARDS Lane Cove Council is calling for nominations for its annual Citizenship Awards. These acknowledge the outstanding contributions and achievements made by members of the local community.

The recipients will be recognised at a public presentation evening hosted by Council during National Volunteer Week to celebrate the valuable contribution that recipients have made to the Lane Cove community or their field of expertise.

How to pack the perfect school lunch box

School lunches used to be simple – a sandwich, piece of fruit and slice of cake. The same thing day in and day out; it was considered a tried and tested recipe for success.

Yet long gone are the days of such simple meal preparation and with schools banning common allergen foods and discouraging plastic wrapping, some parents can find lunch boxes a minefield, especially when food comes home untouched.

If packing lunch boxes make you scratch your head in wonder, then there are some helpful tools to use when deciding what is important. The Health Star Rating is one such tool in the toolbox and can be used to decide the better product within a category. The higher the number of stars, the more nutritious it is. UNCLE TOBYS Fuel for thought report found that 30% of parents use the Health Star Ratings to help them make informed choices, which coincides with the release of their 4-star rated muesli bar range. Both the Chewy and Yoghurt muesli bar ranges have more wholegrains, and sugar in the Yoghurt bar range has been significantly reduced.

Accredited Practising Dietitian Natasha Murray has some simple tips to help make lunch boxes a breeze: l Pack four items in a lunch box.

Include a main and three sides so children have the option of picking something that matches their level of hunger. Whether it's a sandwich, leftovers, sliced fruit and

veggies or muffins, pack a versatile lunch box. l Include something from each food group. Aim to get a serve of carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruit and vegtables into each lunch box. l Make it fun. Use cookie cutters for sandwiches or fruit and make cute shapes out of food. l Rethink treats. Treats shouldn’t necessarily mean chocolate, chips or lollies, instead write a note to them, pack stickers or something similar to excite them. Sweet foods can always be given at home under a watchful eye to monitor how much they have.

WHAT IS DEMENTIA? All tissues in the body age. The brain is no exception. Alzheimer’s Australia statistics tell us that 342,000 people in Australia are living with Alzheimer’s now with numbers set to go up to 400,000 by 2216. It is the second highest cause of death.

Some 1800 people are diagnosed each week. Symptoms of disturbed behaviour are noted, on average, three years before the diagnosis.

Dementia is really a group of symptoms that are caused by various disorders of the brain linked by neuron disablement or destruction. Everyday functioning becomes disrupted. Forgetfulness, trouble thinking, abnormal behaviour, disinhibition, inability to perform everyday tasks and more becomes obvious.

This is not just eccentricity but is progressive. A diagnosis requires that two or more cognitive functions be seriously impaired. Perhaps your Aunty Dot really is dotty because of dementia. Any change of her behaviour is worth noticing. Basically neuron connections become distorted or torn apart. Neurons are like a bluebottle the head [nucleus] is tiny compared to the length of the tendrils [axon]. Those tendril connections to multiple other neurons become damaged. Alzheimer’s, Vascular or Multi infarct and Lewy body types are the most common.

Alzheimer’s dementia is and I quote from the Alzheimer’s website ‘the most common form of dementia accounting for about two thirds of cases. It causes a gradual decline in cognitive abilities, often beginning with memory loss.’

‘The root cause in Alzheimer’s is the formation and deposition of amyloid in plaques. Amyloid is an insoluble protein

and polypeptide material derived from natural bodily chemicals.’ Why it deposits in the brain is a mystery to be resolved.

Amyloid is involved in at least twenty other deposition disease processes.

This is technical stuff. Amyloid plaques literally rip neurons apart and interrupt communications. The second process in Alzheimer’s is the formation of bundles of twisted filaments made up of a protein called tau. They act somewhat like a trawler net entangling a whale. Brain cells start to die.

Multi infarct or vascular dementia sees small arteries that carry nutrition and oxygen become narrowed and blocked.

Blockage means a small area of brain cells it serves dies off. On a CT scan these look like small streaks or blotches on a background of brain shrinkage and thinning. Symptoms, thus behaviour vary with the site of damage in the brain. There can be a mix of two dementia causes in the one person.

Lewy body dementia develops when a protein called alpha synuclein is deposited inside the neuron itself. Quoting again ‘the abnormality develops in specific areas of the brain’. Thinking, behaviour and movement changes occur. In the vision centre of the brain hallucinations are common. Thus wide fluctuations of symptoms are seen with Lewy body dementia.

Alzheimer’s Australia discusses Frontotemporal dementia. The frontal

lobes are associated with reasoning, thinking and behavioural appropriateness.

For instance you may think something nasty about a person such as ‘you’re a silly old cow’ but not say it. With this dementia you will likely say it. And much more of an abusive and obscene nature. Here behaviour becomes bizarre, rude, socially inappropriate, lacking responsibility and neglectful.

Prions are responsible for some of the rarer forms of dementia. The word Prion is made up from protein infection. A Prion is an infectious, self-replicating protein particle that can be passed from person to person or animal to person.

Prions could be partly involved in CJD or Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease. There are large areas of uncertainty and discussion about this rare form of dementia and how it develops and is transmitted. It is rare, about one in a million, develops fast, is incurable and will kill within one to two years.

Prions are definitely responsible for Kuru. Seen only in New Guinea it infects cannibals eating infected human flesh.

Now it’s not so popular a way of getting rid of a difficult relative, even in New Guinea.

Much can be done with good care, brain stimulation and good diet. Vitamin D is now recommended for all in institutions and medication to slow the dementia process is in common use. There is much hope for a new medication now under trial called Etanercept. It may be able to halt the process altogether.

DO YOU NEED COMPOUNDED MEDICINE? Compounded medicines are a mixture of drugs that create a medication for specific needs. We have recently started compounding medicines at Greenwich Pharmacy as it allows us to customise individual solutions for your needs when readily available medicines cannot achieve this. We decided to start compounding as there are so many examples of its usefulness, such as: l You may require a particular nonessential ingredient to be removed from your medicine eg a particular preservative in a cream may cause irritation, or an additive may cause allergies. Other examples include lactose, gluten, dyes and sugar. l You may experience side effects from taking a medicine in tablet form. Applying it topically as a cream may overcome this problem. l A medicine is available in a form that you find difficult to use eg topical steroids in cream form. We can make them as lotions which are easier to apply,

DEALING WITH SENSITIVE TEETH Many people have experienced the displeasure of sensitive teeth. The causes vary from internal problems such as tooth decay, cracked teeth, trauma and teeth grinding, to external problems such as enamel loss from wearing, acid erosion or exposure of root surfaces due to receded gums. The most common symptom is cold sensitivity, but sensitivity to heat and sweet foods also occurs.

Your dentist needs to work out whether the sensitivity is happening because the pulp (or ‘nerve’) of the tooth is irritated and inflamed (pulpitis), or whether it is due to exposed dentine, the sensitive inner part of the tooth that is usually covered by the protective enamel layer.

PULPITIS Pulpitis usually results from entry of bacteria into the pulp of the tooth, for example due to deep tooth decay or perhaps via a crack in the tooth. It can also occur due to trauma, whether directly from a knock or from occlusal trauma, which is

excessive bite force from teeth grinding.

Teeth in this situation become more sensitive to things that don’t normally cause pain, especially temperature.

EXPOSED DENTINE Teeth are normally coated above the gum line in a very hard mineral called enamel. If the enamel starts to thin out or disappear, the underlying part of the tooth, called dentine, is exposed. Dentine is made up of many microscopic channels that contain projections of nerves from the living pulp below. For this reason, exposed dentine tends to be very sensitive. Enamel can be lost from excessive tooth-to-tooth wearing, acid erosion (both dietary and gastric), or receded gum lines which cause exposure of the sensitive root surface, which has no enamel coating. Gums can recede either by gum disease, teeth grinding or overvigorous brushing with hard toothbrushes.

TREATMENT Often, over-the-counter anti-sensitivity

toothpaste is all that is needed to help sensitive teeth. Your dentist can also apply more specialised topical treatments such as concentrated fluoride. These treatments help by blocking the tiny channels in the dentine that lead to the pulp. However, if there are significant problems with exposed dentine from any cause, a trip to the dentist may be your only choice for some kind of restorative procedure aimed at artificially putting back the enamel that has gone missing, if not to rule out a more pressing problem such as an inflamed pulp.

An in-field observational study conducted by the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) of more than 340 school children on high-traffic school commute routes in late 2011, revealed 90% of school children have bad posture when carrying their bags which could result in spinal damage, while 75% are not using their backpack’s ergonomic features to prevent such damage. Dr Lawrence said, “Heavy weight carried in backpacks can cause muscle strain, irritation, negative postural changes and injury, which can lead to adult back pain and spinal disorders, particularly after carrying a heavily loaded backpack for twelve years or more of schooling. Many of the current bags children use may be fashionable, but unless they allow for even distribution across the back, they can cause tremendous discomfort.” Findings published in the Australian Spine journal revealed school backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children, to cause fatigue by 65.7%, and to cause back pain by 46.1%.

Chew a few cloves for your toothache The clove is often described as a little nail, but I look at a single clove and see it as a dark chocolate-coloured jewel, perched on a stem holding a precious gem-like orb with clasps around it.

It is an amazing spice, camphor and cocoa - like in aroma, tasting warm, spicy, peppery and pungent. When it is bitten or chewed, the spice leaves a lingering numbness on the tongue, which masks or reduces the pain from an offending toothache.

Cloves originally grew in the Moluccan islands of Ternate and Batjan. As early as the 2nd Century A.D. it was transported to China where it not only added amazing flavour and warmth to dishes, but acted as a breath freshener when held between the teeth as courtiers spoke directly to their Great Emperor.

The spice arrived early in the west, brought through the Silk Route by caravans travelling to Alexandria. From there it easily spread through the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe. The Arabs who had carried the spices either used camel trains overland or sailing dhows to transport spices. Astute traders kept the origins of their spices secret claiming that the spices came from mountains close to Arabia.

The Clove story continues in many areas of the world but none so interesting as what happened during WW11 when soldiers on the front line in combat could not get to base camps to see their dentists so they resorted to the age old quick-fix of chewing cloves to numb a toothache temporarily.

Despite its common use in history, the clove tree is very fragile needing up to 8 years before its first harvest. Harvesting is done with great care to keep the branches intact. When the branches are broken or damaged, the regrowth does not produce any spice in the following years. After the first 8 years, though, the tree will continue to produce a harvest every 4 years.

The tree lasts for about 50 years or more, assuring the diligent farmer of a constant harvest.

The clove was in great demand in 8th century Europe where unknown fevers and plagues killed people indiscriminately. The stench of rotting bodies was unbearable. We hear of courtiers carrying bouquets of spice, sweet smelling flowers and orange pomades studded with cloves to reduce body odours and to clear the air especially from poor hygienic practices.

Throughout history cloves continued to be used for herbal treatments and in dental care.

From experience and necessity, the Indonesian clove farmer has created myths centered around the tree, likening the plants to pregnant women who have to be treated with kid gloves, respected and revered when the clove tree flowers start to blossom. No noise may be made to upset the flowering cloves or the unborn ‘fetus’ and no fires lit close to the trees. As a sign of respect, all head-gear must be removed in case the buds fall and the mother loses the baby.

European traders and merchants, constantly trying to find routes to spice trade were encouraged by Marco Polo's descriptions of spice gardens. A Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, commissioned by the King of Portugal to find a maritime route to the East, sailed directly to India where he found “all the spices of Arabia” in one trading spot, Calicut, on the southwest coast of India. The rest is a bloodthirsty history of greed: power struggles between the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the

Meditations of a mediocre mother

Well, the party’s almost over. I write this on the last day of two weeks at the beach. That quintessentially Australian holiday. You know the drill - stellar view, sea breeze, sleep-ins and the Big Bash League (BBL). That’s right. I’m a closet cricket fan. Though not the snooze-fest that is test cricket. I can do a day/night at a push. No, it’s the BBL that has me hooked.

How did this come to pass? To take you back to the beginning, three years ago I fell on the volunteering grenade and became the Manager of my son’s cricket team. This followed a life of zero interest in cricket. Growing up with a sister, it was nowhere to be seen on our list of summer viewing on the Rank Arena telly. As an adult, I saw it from time to time but that was largely accidental. Then shazam, I’m an U11’s cricket team Manager. I had no trial by Milo cricket, it was straight to the big leagues. But I figured I was up for it. You may remember our family motto – “There’s bigger morons than you out there.” So, into the fray I went.

in theory. We see the news reports. Wickets, runs, blah, blah, blah. But then you see the score book, which is quite unwieldy and has a distinctly sorcerer’s spellbook feel about it. But I wasn’t too concerned because someone else would be doing the scoring. Someone of the ‘scoring knowledge’. And during the first match I was feeling quite happy with my efficiency. All was ticking along nicely – we had a team and umpire on the field, family spectators and a scorer.

Nothin’ but good times.

Like most parents who volunteer soon discover, the job always seems to involve that bit more than you expected. Who knew you’d be lugging the team training kit all over the suburbs? Who knew I’d be roping the Mediocre Father in to be Umpire?

Now I’m the first to admit to a certain naivety, but it was only after the game I discovered I’d be inputting the scores into the official (not to be trifled with) online scoring thingamajig. And still later before I realised that the scores aren’t just Team A 6/92 beat Team B 10/74. Oh no, the score book revealed the pencil scratchings of a language I not only didn’t know, I had no idea it existed. Who knew there were ‘extras’ including wides, no balls and byes and each has its own symbol. There’s overs bowled, there’s catches taken. There’s what can only be described as an overkill of statistics for a game of smallish people. Yikes! And, if my deciphering was off and I pressed the submit button? Well, computer says no… Back to the drawing board.

And of course, there’s scoring. We all know that

my squeals of outrage and groans of frustration, the Mediocre Father came to my rescue. Through some mansplanation (and browbeating) I came to understand cricket.

Under 11s cricket anyway. And when I say ‘understand’ let’s stress that’s a fairly low level of understanding.

And so - I came to love cricket. (Cue music and credits) That’s possibly overplaying things a tad. I’m not going to sit at the SCG with a KFC bucket on my head, but I carry this secret interest inside as I walk down the street. You would look at me and not even suspect that I know all the BBL teams and their marquee players. You’d suspect I was thinking about what to cook for dinner and that I really must call ‘the man’ to come and trim the hedges, but never that I was thinking about the Big Bash ladder. And the other great thing about the BBL – to the Mediocre Mother it says summer, it says beach holidays and a slower pace of life.

Perhaps I’m going soft? Never fear, I’ll be choking on a ball of start-of-term stress any day now.

So, I’ll enjoy the cricket while I can.

Follow the leader Sometimes, you just don’t want to do it for yourself. Yes it can be fun spending endless hours searching the net, checking in with your friends and a friendly travel agent as to what are the sights to see, the trends to follow and the best places to eat in a far flung locale. However it can often be more enjoyable, more informative and a lot less hassle to just follow the leader. Let him or her do all the hard work so that all you have to do is relax and luxuriate in the knowledge that someone else is making your holiday sing.

At Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre we organise our own biannual Art Tours with Longueville local and artiste extraordinaire Pamela Fairburn, with a domestic and international departure to cover all bases and budgets! It’s not too late to get onboard our fantastic Sicily tour, scheduled to depart in April 2016. We also have an Italy/Sicily/Malta Military History Tour happening in October. Led by David Cooper and Major Mike Peters, this tour will thrill historians. And we are already taking bookings for the 2017 American Civil War Tour, since 2016 is now waitlist only. These tours are all small group journeys, the way we like to travel – and I thought you might like to consider some others to whet your appetite.

Sicily is definitely flavour of the month, and that said, lettuce tempt you (corny I admit) with a fantastic Gastromic Tour of Sicily. To paraphrase the exuberant Elena, “Indulge in wine tastings in historic cellars, lunches in farm stays and typical Sicilian restaurants, unique salt tastings in windmills, traditional but also less known pastry tastings such as manna sweets. You will also try real street food in Palermo, both in restaurants as well in the lively street markets, a mesmerizing experience of colours, smells and flavours.” Yum! Many tours are led by celebrities. In the industry we affectionately refer to these leaders as Pied Pipers since they attract a following that wants to see the world with and through that personality. In 2016 there are some terrific options. For instance you can embark on a European river cruise with Monty Don, yes he of the charming television series who shared with us so many beautiful French gardens. Andrew Denton and Jennifer Byrne love Antarctica – if you feel you’d enjoy their company then the cruise which they host annually is a great opportunity to share some time with them.

If music is your love then why not consider a Best of British Tour with well-known ABC Classic FM presenter Christopher Lawrence. His extensive music literacy fairly sparkles, especially in respect of the planned itinerary that includes the 2016 Glyndebourne and Edinburgh Festivals. The more physically inclined among you might consider touring with Judy Tenzing on a Mountains and Monasteries Tour to include India, Nepal and Bhutan. Now I’ve been to Bhutan and it was a wonderful experience – I imagine it is even better with a leader whose family roots are so deeply entrenched in those magnificent mountains.

While they are not strictly leaders, the best of the cruise lines will feature renowned world affairs experts, writers, historians, diplomats and even a bishop or two. In our own waters, I’ve listened in awe to Professor Geoffrey Blainey and sent clients on cruises which included Henry Kissinger, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other noteworthy speakers. It makes for a fascinating trip.

I love independent travel too. Yet as I wrote earlier, sometimes a place is best

shared in a small group with a leader similarly in love with the destination. We have a host of options for you and would be honoured to share these with you.

Lumps and bumps are common in pets, particularly as they get older. Some lumps can be cancerous (malignant) and some harmless (benign) but it is not always possible to determine this by examination alone. Even if your pet is ‘not bothered by the lump’, this has no impact on whether the lump is cancerous or not as most nasty lumps are not painful for your pet in the early stages.

WHAT TESTING IS NECESSARY IF YOU FIND A LUMP ON YOUR PET? If you have found a lump on your pet then the sooner it is examined by a vet the better, as it may spread elsewhere if it is malignant. It is not possible to be certain on examination alone whether a lump is cancerous or not so your vet will usually want to run some tests.

1) Cytology. This is a non-invasive test method where some cells from the lump are aspirated using a needle and syringe, placed onto a microscope slide and examined under the microscope. Sometimes the diagnosis needs to be confirmed by a veterinary pathologist at an external laboratory and generally the results will take 1-2 days.

The advantage of cytology is that often your pet will not need sedation to have a sample taken so the test can be done during a regular consultation and the results come back quickly. However, the limitations are that some lumps are too small to aspirate, sometimes insufficient cells are sampled and sometimes the results are inconclusive. It is frustrating for both vets and pet owners when a result is not diagnostic.

Generally if sufficient cellular material is aspirated, the accuracy is around 90% for cytology. This means that occasionally cytology results can be misleading as the cells sampled may not be representative of the actual mass, so it is important to continue monitoring the lump and have it re-examined if there are any changes.

2) HISTOPATHOLOGY. Histopathology involves taking a tissue sample of the lump by either removing a piece of tissue (incisional or punch biopsy) or surgically excising the whole lump (excisional biopsy) and sending it to an external laboratory for analysis.

Results take approximately 5-7 days.

Usually a general anaesthetic is required or sometimes sedation and local anaesthesia is sufficient to obtain a sample. An excisional biopsy is carried out in areas where a margin of healthy tissue surrounding the lump can be easily removed, to minimise the chance of cancerous cells being left behind. On the other hand, if the lump is located in a difficult area such as a toe, where there is very little skin to operate with, a punch biopsy is preferred to determine the type of mass before surgery. If a toe tumour biopsy results show that the mass is particularly aggressive, then it may be preferable to amputate the toe to ensure the entire cancer is removed.

Another advantage of histopathology is that some tumours can be graded to further determine the likely prognosis and best course of action after surgery. For example, mast cell tumours of the skin have 3 grades, all of which carry a different prognosis. The pathologist is also able to determine whether the margins are clear of any cancerous cells or whether further surgery is required.

IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE HISTOPATHOLOGY ON A LUMP IF IT IS SURGICALLY REMOVED? If a lump is surgically removed then it is worthwhile carrying out histopathology as some lumps are locally aggressive and others spread internally. It is not possible to determine what the behaviour of the tumour is by examining it with the naked eye in most cases. Knowing what type of lump your pet has can give you peace of mind if it is benign, or allow further tests to be done to see if the lump has spread (metastasised).

There are some cases where histopathology may not be required, such as for a foreign body reaction lump, an abscess or a lipoma (benign fatty lump which can be confirmed with cytology) but this is up to the discretion of your veterinarian as it is not always a clear cut diagnosis.

WHAT OTHER TESTS CAN BE DONE IF THE LUMP IS MALIGNANT? If your pet has a malignant lump then histopathology will inform your vet what type of cancer is present and the behaviour of the tumour.

Sometimes surgery is curative and no further testing is required because the behaviour of the cancer is only locally aggressive. So in these cases, if the margins are clear of any cancerous cells, monitoring the surgical site may be all that is required. If the cancer has a high risk of metastatic spread to lymph nodes, abdominal organs and/ or chest then aspirating any enlarged local lymph nodes, chest radiographs and an abdominal ultrasound will screen your pet to see if there is any evidence of metastases. This is known as cancer staging.

Immunohistochemical staining may be an option for some tumour types that have varying behaviours depending on certain mutations that may be present. This gives further information about the expected prognosis and treatment recommendations can therefore be more accurate.

A consultation with a specialist veterinary oncologist may also be recommended by your veterinarian in some cases.

The Gore Bay Terminal

Message from the Terminal Manager Dear community members, Happy New Year to you all and welcome to 2016 and the fifth edition of our community newsletter.

We held our last Community Information Evening for 2015, for our nearest neighbours, at the Greenwich Sailing Club on November 11. We were joined on the night by one of our 2015 social investment partners, the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra (LCYO) who played for us on the evening. (You can read more about the LCYO in the article below). The evening was well attended and we received lots of positive feedback. The next Community Information evening will be held in early May. Although we have been operating for over 110 years, in August 2015 we celebrated one year of operations since becoming Viva Energy. Throughout this time, we have continued to focus on our safety, environmental and operational performance at the Terminal as well as working with our community in new ways.

Our safety performance has been strong with over 1,300 days since the last Lost Time Injury. This is a testament to the commitment of our staff and contractors to ‘Goal Zero’. At Viva Energy we believe every incident is preventable and are committed to pursuing the goal of no harm to people and protecting the environment. We call this Goal Zero.

In 2015 we worked hard to optimise processes so as to minimise our impact on the community. Before we charter vessels to Gore Bay, we ensure that ships and their crews are aware of the stringent operating requirements in relation to both noise and odour and the importance of minimising these impacts on the community. As a result of installing a new berthing fender two years ago, we have a broader range of vessels which we can choose from. We also require the vessels that we charter to arrive at Gore Bay to use marine fuels with lower sulphur content in their auxiliary engines while they are at berth.

In fact, tanks were an area of interest during the community meeting. I was asked whether we have plans to remove tanks. We will consider, in the future, whether we will demolish redundant storage tanks and will keep you informed of any decisions. We will however have to consider the Heritage Overlay of the site. I was also asked about some of our Marine Fuel Oil tanks that our resident cockatoos like to pick away at the insulation on the side of the tanks. We have a robust tank integrity and maintenance program to ensure that all of our tanks are fit for service.

Some community members also asked me what products are stored on our site.

Fuel products imported into Gore Bay Terminal include Diesel, Marine Fuel Oil, Jet Fuel and Gasoline. These products are often referred to as “finished fuels” and are unloaded from ships and simultaneously transferred to Clyde Terminal for storage and distribution to customers in Sydney and throughout NSW. Gasoline and Jet Fuel are not stored at Gore Bay Terminal. Marine Fuel Oil and Diesel are stored at Gore Bay Terminal. Marine Fuel Oil and Marine Diesel are loaded onto the bunker barge operated from the Terminal to supply maritime customers, predominantly within Sydney Harbour.

Based on feedback we have had from the community, we are also excited to advise that we have been working with Lane Cove Council’s Habitat Co-ordinator in an effort to enhance the external perimeter of our facility to attract a wider range of local fauna by creating garden layers (groundcover through to trees) with suitable native plants. We have also removed some Camphor Laurel trees in a number of locations.

Bunker Barge replaced with state-of-the-art technology

Lane Cove Youth Orchestra Plays at the Gore Bay Community Information Evening

The ICS Reliance is a purpose built barge which features state-ofthe-art mooring technology to deliver operational efficiencies and further improve the safe, efficient and reliable supply to the maritime industry in Sydney Harbour.

Some facts about the ICS Reliance include: •

It is a similar size to the previous barge (the Destine) at 92.7m long;

•

Key features include remote control mooring technology, automatic cargo gauges, automatic valves and an array of thrusters and engines that enables the barge to hold its station during mooring operations;

•

The crew undertook practice sessions on the Smart Ship Simulator in Brisbane. Similar to an aircraft simulator, it mimics exactly the mooring process at the Gore Bay Terminal, complete with imagery;

•

It runs on ultra-low sulphur diesel (D10), which is exactly the same fuel used in diesel passenger cars; and

•

Rigorous noise modelling and modifications were completed before the barge arrived at Gore Bay.

We had the pleasure of having one of our 2015 Social Investment Partners, The Lane Cove Youth Orchestra (LCYO), play at the recent Community information evening held on 11 November.

The conductor for the evening was their patron Colin Piper, also a local resident of Lane Cove, who has recently retired after 43 years as percussionist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. We were joined by around forty musicians whose ages ranged from ten to 18 and they played pieces from Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Nutcracker’ plus the finale from Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.

Viva Energy has had a long partnership with the LCYO which began in 2008 and has, over the course of this partnership, donated a total of $110,000. This has enabled the LCYO to offer music scholarships to young musicians who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to participate in an extended music program.

Orchestra. One graduate, Carlo Antonioli, a young conductor is now much in demand with the NSW State Schools Performing Arts Unit.

We would especially like to thank Lyndall McNally, President of the LCYO for organising the orchestra to play at the Community Information Evening.

We have enjoyed a long partnership with the LCYO and this will be ending as a new Social Investment Program is to be launched by Viva Energy in 2016. The new plan is timely with existing social investment agreements coming to an end in 2015, following the transition from Shell to Viva Energy. In reviewing our community strategy, a decision was made that it will change focus and Viva Energy’s community program will be focussed on mental health and substance abuse. More information about our new community program will be available on our website in the coming months.

Viva Energy’s Community Grant to Greenwich Public School In 2015, Viva Energy awarded a Community Grant of $5,000 to the Greenwich Public School to support their Playground Upgrade Project at the Kingslangley Rd campus.

The funds from Viva Energy have directly supported the first stage of the project which involved two concept designs of the new playground which were voted on by the school community.

A short history of Gore Bay Terminal in its earlier years that: 1901 – began operations as one of the first hydrocarbon storage and receiving facilities in Australia with the aim of introducing bulk shipments of petroleum products. Kerosene (which is similar to Jet Fuel) was the first product received, stored and distributed from the site.

1914 – the first bulk cargo shipment of gasoline arrived at Gore Bay. 1918 – as the site grew, tanks were constructed to store oils and gasoline.

1930 – by this time, the site included a tin factory where products were packed and shipped via road and sea vessels.

Silver Days, Golden Years – or the Big Sleep?

After reading ‘The Big Sleep’ article in The Age (15/1/16) about the suicide pact of Melbourne scientists Pat and Peter Shaw, and then about David Bowie's hugely creative and energetic last 18 months in The Guardian, I was puzzled.

I

wondered how many of us in our retiring years might be caught in the middle, still seeing things left undone, places untraveled and ideas not realised, but frustrated by lack of energy, state of health, family support or basic wherewithal to make the most of a twilight that might linger longer.

The recent Belvoir play ‘Seventeen’ was a poignant juxtaposition of youthful exuberance against the frailties of age, with actors in their 70’s taking the roles of 17 year olds celebrating their last day of school and an uncertain future. One of its key messages was an unfolding awareness of our mortality, and what will we have to celebrate or just keep us going towards the end.

Then reading Marcus Westbury's recent book Creating Cities and thinking about how his process of remaking downtrodden areas of Newcastle might be applied to the complexity of our retirement and aged care system, perhaps to create easier ways for elder sharing, just like our student days! Much cohabit potential exists in many big houses on the North Shore (and elsewhere) or recycled inner city warehouses if there were less social taboos, bureaucratic barriers, more community and health support mechanisms, and the potential for cultural/social media hook-ups to foster a new silver age for baby boomers, and generations to follow.

There are some existing affordable and social housing complexes such as Pottery Gardens in Lane Cove with potential for redevelopment to more innovative shared village models. With the imminent changes to the strata act many home unit complexes may provide opportunities for different configurations as reimagined multi-age communities, 26 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I N0. 248 I FEBRUARY 2016

where cooperation and sharing of skills, time, resources and even management expertise might offer new ways for aging to be better integrated within existing urban conditions.

During my architect partner Guy Luscombe’s research trip in 2014 to investigate new ways that some European countries are enabling their seniors to enjoy life and even prosper in their silver days, the example of shared seniors’ accommodation was one that stood out. In St Gallen, Switzerland, four elderly friends decided to develop their own co-housing solution in an old fabric factory, and created personalised units with a range of common area facilities to support their interests, which has won several awards.

Various other inter-generational or multi-age housing he visited had a mix of families, singles, young couples and older people which had been shown to work where residents agreed to participate in the community as part of their contract.

With less than 6% of people over 65 considering Retirement/ Seniors Living Village options, and a fewer still wanting to end up in the traditional nursing home, there appears to be a huge desire for alternatives, either with a few friends or others who might share common interests in music, the arts, gardening, literature or various sports, and capacities to fix things or prepare meals.

Perhaps such community activities might take place on site as in Bayside, Victoria and various New York locations, where residency programs aimed at emerging artists, multimedia practitioners, writers and composers provide residencies or studios in exchange for community engagement activities - artist’s talks, workshops, master classes and participation in local

festivals or exhibitions to brighten and engage those in their twilight.

Unfortunately there are few precedents in this area, where policy and funding frameworks are limited to existing models, and innovation or disruptive thinking are rarely welcome. A shared equity model based on enablement and affordability might tick the financial boxes, but the regulatory framework appears to be a minimum and ultimate standard.

So perhaps a Marcus Westbury approach is needed, and as he argues in Creating Cities “…most towns and cities are wasting their most obvious opportunities: the talent, imagination, and passion of the people that live there. In a globalised age, local creativity has access to new possibilities that most places have barely begun to grasp.”

CRISIS IN THE FAMILY COURTS

There are plenty of good reasons for couples who have separated to settle their differences outside of court. Stress, time and the effort it takes, as well as the cost of court hearings are the main reasons.

In particular, cost is becoming more and more of an issue.

The costs to the Government of running the Family Courts have been increasing, and last year the government responded by trying to increase the fees payable by people who use the Family Courts, but this move was blocked by the Federal Senate.

Another government cost saving measure that is happening is delaying the appointment of new judges whenever a serving judge retires. As a result, there are now fewer judges available to hear family law cases.

Meanwhile family law cases are getting more complex and there are more of them so they are taking up more and more of the judges’ time. This has been putting increasing pressure on the existing judges, as their workload is increasing and their resources are diminishing. Recently the Chief Justice of the Federal Circuit Court announced the Parramatta Family Law court might have to close unless more judges are appointed to meet the need.

The lack of new judicial appointments has also affected people who might be considering going to court to resolve their differences. The time people have to wait to go to court hearings has been increasing to the point where it now takes two to three years for people to get a final court hearing. That’s a long time for people to put their lives on hold, particularly when

they are experiencing intense issues relating to maintaining a reasonable living standard or issues relating to the safety and welfare of themselves and their children.

So what does it mean in practice? The crisis in the Family Courts emphasises the advantages to separating couples of staying out of the Family Courts if they possibly can. Parties in court should try to resolve their differences by independent mediation rather than waiting for a judge to decide for them. We do need a properly funded Family Court system to provide just and expedient solutions and to provide the backbone to the administration of family law justice. The government needs to address this issue. However, for separating couples, it demonstrates that there are much better ways to resolve family law problems than in the courts. Engaging in the new dispute resolution method known as collaborative mediation, with the assistance of experienced family lawyers and other experts, is a much better way to come to a good settlement.

If you really have to go to court, get in and out of there as quickly as possible once your objective is achieved and an agreement is reached.

It is hard to believe that 2016 is now upon us, but as we start the year afresh I look forward to all the exciting opportunities that the new year brings including improvements to pedestrian access and change room facilities at Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre, design progress on the Rosenthal Avenue car park project, new Open Space and Cultural plans, new community spaces at Little Lane and Centenary celebrations for Greenwich Baths.

With schools now back for 2016 I would like to remind motorists to take care in and around school zones, particularly at pedestrian crossings. Parents can also start the year off on the right foot by being positive role models during the school drop off and pick up times.

REMEMBERING MAL LENNON It has been a sad start to the year with "Commander" Mal Lennon, a previous Club Captain of the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club, recently losing his life at sea whilst steering a yacht off Port Stephens. Mal lived his early life in Longueville and started sailing in the early 60's. He was Club Captain for many years, and will be sadly missed by Club members. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

LITTLE STREET CAR PARK NOW OPEN 200 car parking spaces are now available in the car park off Little Street. The car park has been opened while construction continues on the upper levels. As a result there are temporary arrangements in place for pedestrian and parking access.

In the coming months a pedestrian footbridge will be constructed across to the Aquatic Centre with a connection to the internal lift on each floor of the car park. In the interim the exit via ground floor at Little Lane is the designated pedestrian exit. I would urge all car park users, in particular those with children, to be using this route – pedestrian access in and out of the main car entry is extremely unsafe. Upon the completion of the footbridge the lift will become

Traffic restrictions around schools are designed to keep everyone safe so please obey the No Stopping and No Parking signs. No Stopping means exactly that, the area is likely to have issues with visibility or safety so cars should not stop there, even for a few minutes. No Parking signs are in areas where you can stop for two minutes but you must remain within three metres of your vehicle. I encourage everyone to stay safe by obeying the signs and taking care on all roads, including those in and around our Lane Cove schools.

JOYFUL CHRISTMAS While the festive season may seem like a long time ago I wanted to make mention of how wonderful it was to see so many Christmas celebrations in Lane Cove. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer to members of St Columba’s and Kamilaroi Retirement Villages in Mayoral visits in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I hope that residents of Lane Cove also enjoyed time with family and friends across the holidays.

I was elected at the North Sydney by-election on 5 December 2015 and formally commenced my term following the declaration of the poll on 22 December. AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS On 26 January we had a fantastic Australia Day Celebration at the Deckhouse at Clarkes Point. One of the privileges of being Mayor is conferring citizenship on local residents and Australia Day is a particularly special day to become a new citizen. Twelve members of our community

became our newest citizens. Our special guest and Australia Day Ambassador was Sam Cawthorn, who is a distinguished Australian author, motivational speaker and philanthropist as well as the being the 2009 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year.

It was my pleasure this year to announce the 2016 Community Award winners. Our Citizen of the Year is Mr Paul (Gary) Traill, who has generously devoted many years supporting and leading community organisations including Hunters Hill Respite Care, Ryde Community Services and many more. Our Young Citizen is Oliver Sumsky, who has volunteered to assist at the Matthew Talbot Hostel for homeless men serving meals on Friday evenings and volunteers to be a carer for children with severe disabilities. Our Sportsperson of the Year is Hamish McDonald, who has represented Australia in Rowing.

The Community Event of the Year is The Military Memorabilia Restoration Advisory Committee for the Restoration and Dedication of the Hunters Hill WW1 Howitzer together with the Celebration of the Centenary of Anzac. The Committee worked for two years to secure funding for and to organise the restoration and relocation of the WW1 Krupp Howitzer that had been allocated to Hunters Hill Council in 1922 as a War trophy.

The Committee was also responsible for organising the Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Service as well as the Dedication of the restored Howitzer by the Governor.

I would also like to congratulate local resident Mrs Christine Jensen OAM who received recognition in the Order of Australia General Division, for her service to the Anglican Church Community in Sydney.

Gardening Club Our gardening club celebrated the end of the school year with a feast from the garden cooked by one of our Year one teachers. The children enjoyed a vegetable and herb omelette presented on a banana leaf and washed down with mint and strawberry water. Many children came back for seconds and even thirds!

K-2 CHRISTMAS CONCERT Our annual Christmas Concert was as usual, a highlight of the school year for the students in K-2 who had been rehearsing their lines and learning their dance moves all term. The children performed The Night before Christmas and learnt about props, costumes, sound and lighting. It was great to see so many parents and special guests supporting our students on the day.

K-2 PRESENTATION DAY Our K-2 students celebrated their achievements at the K-2 Presentation Day in week nine. We were entertained by a number of performance groups including the Toothless Choir who sang Give it all You’ve Got. The highlight of the morning was watching a slide show of the year.

YEAR THREE TO SIX PRESENTATION DAY Our Year three to six Presentation Day acknowledged the outstanding achievements of our students and welcomed

JAMBEROO Our Year six students and their teachers had a wonderful day at Jamberoo to celebrate the end of the school year. It was a long day with buses picking up the children early in the morning and returning them at 5.30pm but everyone had a great time and came back with lots of stories to tell about the day. A highlight of the day was watching the teachers on the Taipan.

BUSHFIRE APPEAL Almost $500 was collected for the County Fire Service recently. What a fantastic effort from Lane Cove West students in supporting volunteer fire fighters. All students and staff wore blue to school. This fundraising event was initiated by one of our Year six SRC members.

SCIENCE CLUB PARTY Science Club held their end of year party and brought in some great science themed

1L has been learning about Mimi Indigenous artwork and the Dreamtime. They have been busy making their own Mimi Spirits which are very thin spirits with long arms, legs and neck. These spirits taught the Aboriginal people much law and custom and how to make hunting implements. These spirits appeared in the school garden and were enjoyed by all.

YEAR SIX FINAL ASSEMBLY Our very talented year six students wrote and produced a play called Memories which told the story of their time at Lane Cove West from Kindergarten to Year six. It was lovely to see Year six portraying our current staff as well as past staff members who had taught them over the years.

BAND GALA NIGHT The hall came alive with the musical prowess of our school bands at our annual gala night. The students have been rehearsing all year for this event and it showed! The evening could not have gone ahead without our wonderful conductors and the band committee.

The covering of our school field with synthetic grass is well underway. We could not have done this without the generosity of the P&C and the hard work of parents with fundraising ventures over the past few years. A multi-purpose court has been painted over the holidays and 2016 will see the first year that Lane Cove West enters teams into the Northern Suburbs Netball Competition.

After 16 years teaching the students of LCW PS, our wonderful Mrs Davis has decided to retire. Her dedication to students and the school community will be greatly missed. An assembly was held in her honour at the end of the term with the staff presenting an entertaining musical item to ‘Hey Mickey’ and the students presenting a gift. We wish Maree well in her retirement.

ROSENTHAL DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT PLAN Words describing the Rosenthal Carpark development have now been backed up with a visual plan in the form of a Development Application for the overall CONCEPT. This DA was exhibited for 28 days (for 12 of which Council was closed) over the festive season (7 Dec – 3 Jan), when most people were not notified or were too busy with their own activities to view the documents and comment.

This is not a formal final plan but does put into form the previous words - only description voiced by Councillors.

We are asked to accept that the final development will comply in broad terms with 17 drawings which were not available on the web, but could be viewed at Council and at the library. Again a big ask at this time of the year.

There are no surprises in general terms, but there are some unfortunate changes from the previous information. The grand public open space on the upper level is approximately 4500m2 (not the 6750m2 as described in the Council newsletter Oct 2015). The remainder of that level is commercial/retail (including open air seating areas) and a covered access area to the levels below. This public open

space does comply with the previous claimed proportion of that level of about 65% of the site area.

The retail level below includes a 3900m2 supermarket, an 1100m2 mini mart or other retail use, as well as public access to all levels and truck service areas for the retail component. Parking is now on four levels to achieve the promised 500 spaces. Entry/exit is at one point opposite Finlayson Street, with a roundabout at that intersection. The Statement of Environmental Effects states that there will be “minimal” impact on traffic at this point, but that is hard to believe given the continual movement of cars associated with retail parking areas. Truck access is also close to this roundabout.

A new, useful pedestrian bridge is planned from the public open space to the unit developments on the other side of Rosenthal Ave. A major change is the absorption of the footpath in Rosenthal Ave into the site.

This, together with the building being right up to the boundaries of the two lanes, means that there is no opportunity for landscaping on the perimeter of the building. One of the first “likes” from the

exhibition of the designs for the public open space was the landscaping along Rosenthal Ave. in particular, softening the visual impact of a 3 ½- storey building along this frontage. This softening has now disappeared, even though the majority of the illustrations in the DA submission are taken from the Arcadia design (for the public open space), and show considerable landscaping on this frontage (see Council newsletter of Oct 2015). One must ask is it really necessary to expand the site in this way, removing this desirable aspect of the development?

The building will need this softening, to avoid being just another large wall of bricks and mortar against the residential units across the road, as well as to all the people driving past on this busy road.

Council claims this will be an exciting development and one which will enhance the Village. There is no doubt that this is so, but the public needs to be kept informed and to be part of the next phases, so that they are on board and can be confident that what is actually built reflects the aspirations of the people who use the area and enjoy the ambience that Lane Cove has developed over the years.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY Sustainability Small Grants Program Up to $2000 in funding is available from Lane Cove Council for community organisations to implement local sustainability projects.

Round 12 of the Sustainability Small Grants Program is now open. Funding can be sought for projects that educate or address environmental concerns such as energy or water consumption, waste avoidance, biodiversity or transport.

Previous grant recipients have used funding to install rainwater tanks and energy efficiency measures, establish community gardens and implement programs such as the Lane Cove Bush Kids bushland education program.

brochure arriving in the mail box detailing the parks where dogs can be walked and an opportune invitation from a gifted curator, Felicity Martin, to take up an artist-in-residence spot at Centrehouse, stir it together adding a dash of wonder and what results is an amazing body of artwork and prints created by award winning local artist, Marina Bishop. Local baths dotting the edge of our beautiful Sydney Harbour (some unknown to Marina herself) became the focus for this artist as she began a journey of discovery both physically and mentally.

An artist has to select the medium that best expresses their thoughts. Small linocuts served to capture the “design” aspect of each pool but interestingly Marina used mixed media to communicate her strong emotional connection to her chosen subject. “Swimming in these pools inspired me.” Already the power of art to record history is apparent as one of the pools, Tambourine Bay pool has been filled in!

There were several aspects to Marina’s project: the miniature linoblock prints were used to communicate the concept but they do not tell the whole story. The subject matter of the Harbour Pools was more than just illustrating each individual pool.

The experience of swimming so close to the city, looking across the harbour at water level, through the safety of the enclosure, with boats beyond, the tapering headlands on either side and the city in the background or a horizon of almost pristine bush gave Marina an exhilarating feeling. She felt she needed to not only record Sydney’s possibly endangered Harbour baths, but also to try and capture the essence of these old world pools. That is when Marina started working in mixed media on watercolour paper to record an impression of enclosure and harbour.

The resulting body of work from Marina’s artist-in-residence project is now on display at Gallery Lane Cove from 19 January till 13 February.

Lane Cove Concert Band – on the move The Lane Cove Concert Band is excited to announce that it is moving to a brand new location in 2016.

From February 2016 all rehearsals will be held in the brand new Waterview Community Centre located underneath the newly named Waterview Drive (formally 314 Burns Bay Road), Lane Cove. “This is a very exciting time for our organisation,” said the Band’s President, Richard Palmer.

“This wonderful new facility will not only enable us to grow our existing six ensembles but will allow us to develop new programmes so that we can continue to offer the Lane Cove community the opportunity to enjoy playing music in an ensemble at almost any playing standard.”

The organisation is launching its 2016 Adult Beginners Music program in February. It’s been over seven years since the organisation began its first adult beginner program and, in that time, more than 130 men and women of all ages have experienced the joy of learning a musical instrument – in most cases for the very first time. Most have also remained with the organisation, playing in one or more of the band’s six ensembles, having developed into fine musicians.

Many adults are initially sceptical, but soon realise that even with absolutely no prior musical experience, they can be playing recognisable tunes within a short period of time.

The Lane Cove Concert Band is pleased to announce that Mr Gavin Staines has been appointed as the new Music Director of the Cameraygal Wind Symphony.

Gavin will start rehearsing with the band on the 4th February, 2016. Gavin’s knowledge, experience and excellent reputation will contribute significantly to the current growth phase of the Cameraygal Wind Symphony and we are looking forward to having him aboard the team.

CHRISTMAS IN THE LIBRARY

The Cameraygal Wind Symphony is the senior ‘Flagship’ ensemble in the LCCB organisation and comprises a group of approximately 45 enthusiastic woodwind, brass and percussion adult players with an average playing standard of 5th grade AMEB.

Lane Cove Youth Orchestra finds a great venue for a casual concert as it delivers Christmas in the Library. LCYO enjoys testing different venues for performance and our recent Christmas in the Library concert, held on Wednesday 16th December 2015, was one such test producing a highly successful result. The acoustics worked well for our repertoire, rich with Christmas favourites, and there was plenty of space for our appreciative audience. As always our wonderful conductor, Mark Brown, directed with musical flair, plenty of festive spirit and a touch of humour.

The Band performs seasonally in the lower north shore area of Sydney and in various Regional, State or National Band Championships in the open B-Grade section.

It was a pleasure to welcome Arne Tripolone with his talented young string group from Hunters Hill Public School. These young players certainly added vigour to our rendition of the Halleluiah Chorus and the ever popular Christmas Carols.

Tambourine Bay Baths Due to Lane Cove’s location at the edge of Sydney Harbour and extending along the northern banks of the Lane Cove River there is a long history of both public and private harbour baths and tidal pools in the municipality.

The Tambourine Bay Baths were built by the Tambourine Bay Ex-Service Association during the 1950s, when backyard pools were uncommon.

This iconic and much loved Australian play set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war, is a nostalgic look at Australia and Australians separated by diversity and drawn together by conflict.

During 1929-1930 residents of the Riverview area, lead by Mr E. J. Cook, petitioned Council for the construction of ‘public baths’ on land at Tambourine Bay. The matter was deferred as Council found the site unsuitable and the idea of baths at Tambourine Bay was not raised with Council again until the 1950s.

Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are faced with their son Tom’s terminal illness. Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with the socially unsuitable Tom. Roy is unable to console a grief-stricken Coral over the death of their only son. But with the help of some Shakespearean fairies and a spectacular storm these families are reconciled and face the future with renewed hope.

Post-World War II, the War Service Homes Division constructed many new homes in the Tambourine Bay Estate at Riverview. Many of the families relocating to Riverview had a number of children and this increased the need for services and facilities. In March 1949, the Tambourine Bay Ex-service Association was formed with an aim to further ‘the interests - material, social and cultural of ex-servicemen and women’. The Association sought to build a Soldiers Memorial Hall that could also be used for a kindergarten.

Many activities, including annual balls, social evenings, cake stalls and picture nights, were held to raise funds. By June 1952 the Association’s focus was to obtain permission for a small shark-proof swimming enclosure in Tambourine Bay.

Perhaps AWAY’s greatest strength is as a tale of redemption. Tragedy can be overcome. The human spirit can triumph in the darkest of times.

The play is on the Higher School Certificate syllabus this year. As schools have already booked 100 seats early bookings are strongly recommended.

The Association proposed building a ‘hybrid’ type of baths where water would be pumped into the pool from the bay. It required Council approval, leasing of land from the Maritime Services Board, permission to construct a walkway approach to the pool, the use of explosives for construction and the clearing of blackberry and undergrowth to create an adjoining picnic area. All work was to be done by voluntary labour and use of association funds. Ten perches (approx. 253 sq. metres) of waterfront land at the rear of Kallaroo Road properties was leased by the Association’s trustees in August 1953.

The pool took much than longer than estimated to complete, due to the difficult working conditions and site access. The volunteer workers’ weekend hours were also restricted by the tides. The pool and adjoining toddlers area was completed for the 1957-1958 summer season - an old petrol-driven outboard motor served as the pump to fill the pool above high-water level.

The Association continued to operate, clean and maintain the pool with its voluntary labour, employing a supervisor in busy periods. However, the increasing difficulty of repairing the concrete floor and the daily cleaning and pumping of water led to requests for Council assistance.

Council acceded to the request in 19621963, provided the pool be opened to the general public. In 1966, Council’s capital assistance was needed for a permanent electric pumping solution to operate automatically on the rise and fall of the tide ensuring one complete renewal of water each day. In 1969 the difficulty of cleaning the uneven stone walls and fractures in the pool’s floor required further Council assistance. In January 1987, Council closed the pool because of supervision, insurance, pollution and public liability issues.

The pool reopened for the 1988-1989 season but maintenance, health and safety issues were an ongoing problem.

Council took over the lease from the Maritime Service Board in 1994 ending the Tambourine Bay Ex-service Association’s management of the pool. In 1994 the baths were heritage listed, along with Greenwich and the Jean Martin (Lucretia Street) Baths. Reoccurring health, safety and maintenance issues led to the permanent closure of the Tambourine Bay Baths. Late in 2015 Council marked the location of the Tamborine Bay Baths with a plaque to recognise the unique history of the site, along with improvements to the recreation and picnic area.

Many families will remember the Education Department swimming and lifesaving classes at Tambourine Bay Baths.

EASY PLAYING - LOTS OF FUN! BOOMERS: An informal social group for older men who are independently mobile; sticks & walkers are welcome. Outings are typically three hours in duration & include destinations such as cafés, parks, galleries, museums, historic houses and other places of interest. $10 includes outing, morning tea & transport.
