There is something about the Easter holidays that makes us happier than the Christmas break.

The hot weather eases, perfect for being outside. The stresses are limited to an Easter egg hunt in the garden and perhaps a meal with family and/or friends. And even if you’re not from a Christian background, or practise Christianity, the notion of an individual (albeit divine) proving eternal life is true is captivating. There’s a sense that disconnecting from our everyday routines and challenges is acceptable, if not essential, and something we would all benefit from.

In this month’s TVO you can read about the local AFL Club, the “Cats”, the new Live Music Zone that is bringing free music to the streets, two interviews with two remarkable women, plus the regulars including another snapshot from author Guy Hallowes’ time spent in Botswana. We are very much enjoying Guy's stories.

news Pub mogul sets up HQ in Lane Cove 71 Longueville Road, just opposite the Longueville Hotel, has been sold to hotel and clubs owner, Laundy Group, for $33m.

Laundy Hotel Group has expanded significantly in recent years and the positioning of its HQ in Lane Cove, according to the company, allows it to attract the best talent.

Laundy’s Nick Tindall told the media that the pub empire is “very excited” to take ownership of a building that is a “gateway site to one of Sydney’s sought-after suburbs.”

Proceeds from sale of Ryde home to benefit charities Profits from a home in Ryde which sold this month for $2.2m - $600k over reserve – will be donated to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Agent Michael Dowling told onlookers, interested parties and the media that he believes the majority of the profits will go to the charities, with a small bequest to two individuals.

Lane Cove musician to take the stage at King’s Coronation Lane Cove born-and-bred violin virtuoso Madeleine Easton is to play at the Coronation of King Charles III on May 6 in London.

Madeleine - who is the founder and director of Bach Akademie Australia - will perform with the English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, her longtime mentor and patron.

Madeleine, who plays an incredibly rare 1682 Giovanni Grancino violin, said: “I cannot tell you what it means to me personally to be part of this historic moment in time. To be a small part of such a great and longstanding tradition dating back to 1066 is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I am also greatly honoured to be representing Australia - in my own small way.

“I am most excited to be able to contribute to what will undoubtedly

be a beautiful and historic occasion, marking the coronation of King Charles III, and to be part of the continuing tradition of the British Monarchy.”

King Charles is known to be a passionate classical music lover and plays the cello himself.

He has had a long association with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and has been the Royal Patron of the Monteverdi Choir and orchestra for many years.

The Prince is Back

This may be my last column for a while as it seems I’m off to prison. An alarming missive has landed in my in-box from POLICE HEADQUARTERS, headed CRIMINAL POLICE REPORT. Luckily, a detailed explanation is attached, and I’ve been given 48 hours to respond.

Scams have certainly moved on from the infamous Nigerian Prince, the cliché classic foot-in-the-door hoax named for the country it originates from. It began as newspaper ads before the internet, an appeal from a certain Prince Bil Morrison, of noble birth and hailing from the far reaches of Nigeria. All he wanted was some American pen pals. The original ad’s wording was so moving, the papers published his mailing list free of charge, desperate to connect the poor prince with some eager correspondents. Then he made a simple request – could his new buddies send him a mere four dollars and an old pair of pants they no longer needed? In return they were guaranteed ivory, diamonds and emeralds, which were worthless to him compared to his new priceless friendships. The riches never eventuated, to everyone’s surprise, and the scam was traced to a fourteenyear-old boy in the States. No-one was sure why he needed the pants, but they poured in, along with a lot of money.

The digital age is gold for all manner of scams, from phishing to identity theft, investment scams to hacking.

Mention of mainstream businesses nearly everyone uses, such as banks or toll payments, lend enough weight to make you look twice. They’re so sophisticated these days, they even replicate the identical message your bank sends you, and – here’s the kicker – from the same no-reply address.

A quick audit of my phone and inbox throws up several more contenders. Evidently I made a payment via PayPal to somewhere for $1789, but if this was not me, I should reach out via this link. This reverse psychology often bears fruit – no, I don’t want to give you money, but wait, if money’s been taken already then I need to check it out. Spare a thought for the poor Sydney couple who were recently robbed of $100,000 in less than two hours, thinking they were rectifying fraudulent payments. The one-time passwords they were sent to cancel the unauthorised transactions were actually sanctioning offshore purchases.

shoulders the highest number of reports. Scam red flags to watch out for include requests for account or personal details via email. If you’re on the phone, any sense of the person rushing you or instilling a sense of urgency (‘you need to fix it now before it gets worse!’) never will happen from a legitimate financial institution.

The most successful are the ones that catch you in an unguarded moment – either tugging at your heart strings and establishing trust, or when you’re rushing to catch a plane with no internet access. The latest wave of text spams is smart. I’ve had several ‘Mum I’ve lost my phone, please send a message to this number.’ I fell for the first one, simply by replying ‘what’s your name?’, to which I was told ‘your oldest child.’ (Bawdy derision from both my children - you DIDN’T reply did you???????) Once the scammers discover an Achilles heel that’s it.

Closer inspection of my Police HQ email reveals the sender’s address to be combinations of the words ‘federal’ and ‘police,’ from a Gmail address. I don’t know what will happen if I open the attachment – maybe there’ll just be simple details where I can settle up and make my criminal report go away quietly. I’m sure actual criminals would jump at the chance to pay a fine and clear their record, though you may not get the Nigerian Prince falling for it any time soon.

interview: Paula Astridge The prolific Hunters Hill author is back with a new book

 You have lived in HH for 30 years. What brought you here and what is it about the place that made you stay?

I’m a country and city girl combined. I was born in Inverell NSW, but in 1969 (just in time to watch my new city school’s telecast of the first moon landing), our family moved to Sydney to live for some years in my very fondly remembered Darling Point. My husband-to-be, however, lived in the Drummoyne/Balmain area and we were fortunate enough to buy a small house in Hunters Hill. It was an area, at that point, completely unknown to me and one that was to become the only place I wanted to be.

Probably because its history and exquisite beauty made for the perfect balance -- half country town, half city, which in essence is exactly me.  Tell us about your family of writers and their influence on you.

My father’s side of the family was strictly medical. But while he, Esmond Smith, was a Dr of Dentistry in Macquarie Street, my mother, Marguerite (nee Browne) came from a long line of writers and journalists. She, herself, won the Xavier Prize for Literature back in 1969 and wrote regular short stories for the Women’s Weekly back in the day when such stories were beautifully illustrated by Arthur Boothroyd and took up a double-spread of what was then the much more interesting, larger format magazine. My sisters, Jacqueline Smith and Susan Hurley were both very successful editors of various magazines/newspapers in Sydney during their careers and there were a host of forebears who, for newspaper over the last 100 years, did the same. So I think it’s simply in my blood. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to write. My book BECAUSE OUR FATHERS LIED, in fact, features my great, great uncle, Spencer Browne, who was a leading light for the Brisbane Courier (now the Courier Mail) for 60 years.  In the 1970s, your first job was with Rolling Stone magazine. We imagine you have some great stories from that time. Can you disclose one or two?

It was a dream job for a 17-year-old, fresh from finishing the HSC at Loreto Convent, Kirribilli. Although only hired as a “Girl Friday” in what were then Rolling Stone’s rather tatty, but wonderfully atmospheric terrace house premises in Sussex Street, it was endless fun with a capital “F”. Its talented and very kind owners, Paul and Jane Gardiner

trained me hard in office and journalist skills while making sure that I was involved in all that the exciting industry had to offer: Lots of preview records and flashy receptions with the leading rock stars of the day.  In the 80s you founded an advertising agency.

Describe what it was like to run a business and raise a family in those days.

Just two words sum it up: FRANTICALLY BUSY! A full-on case of multi-tasking from school drop-offs to hard hitting advertising sales. We were starting from scratch in tiny, cheap-as-chips premises in Gladesville; sensibly testing the water to see if we could make a success of it before committing ourselves to investing bigger money in the enterprise.

It was initially very scary stuff, but all augured well for our fledgling agency when McDonalds was the first to respond to our breakout marketing campaign.  Over the last couple of decades you have written and had published nine books. What motivates you? Do you work a 9-5?

Since selling out of my advertising agency and committing to writing full-time, I have always treated it as a career, although it’s nigh on impossible to sustain an eight hour day.

I do, however, stick to a strict routine. I think for any writer it is imperative because it’s hard yakka maintaining the inspiration and disciplining yourself is essential if you want to keep the dream alive and make it a reality.

My morning starts very early with a walk on the waterfront to clear my thoughts before sitting down at 10.00am each day for about 4 hours. Over the years I’ve found it’s about all you can do before becoming brain-dead and your eyes crossing in front of the computer.

Here, I have to give a plug to the marvelous internet. All my books are based heavily on fact, and without that amazing “at the touch of your finger” computer resource I could never have come close to completing nine books on my chosen big subjects that required such intensive research.

Twenty years ago I would have had to spend all my time at the Mitchell Library and none of it would have been possible.

It was a rare edition of a work written by my great, great uncle who, aside from being a leading light for the Brisbane Courier (now the Courier Mail) for 60 years was a major general in both the Boer and Great War. I feel very strongly that I am always guided “in a mystical sense” by the characters about whom I write and it was at this point that I felt my uncle was claiming his place in the line.

I knew so little about him, but reading up on the facts I found that he was right up there with all the bigwigs in the military: John Monash, Harry Chauvel and Brudenell White, while being best friends with likes of Banjo Paterson and Thomas Hardy. His was a fabulous story and I figured, at this point, that he had every right to demand my unflinching attention.

 Your latest work is "Because our Fathers Lied". Describe the inspiration for this latest novel.

After finishing a book, I always find it hard to snap myself out of the world about which I’ve written. There’s a brief period of feeling a bit lost and lonely, as if having said goodbye to dear old friends. It takes a while before I feel ready to settle on my next subject and delve into it.

I was casting around for that next subject of mine, having finished my eighth novel DEEP SLEEP about the Titanic and its rescue ship The Carpathia. such a fabulously interesting subject it was hard to stir interest in another. Then out of the blue a book was put on my desk: A JOURNALIST’S MEMORIES by Spencer Browne.

BECAUSE OUR FATHERS LIED is not only a tribute to him and the incredible people with whom he worked, but to our wonderful Australian forces as a whole.  Do you have one recommendation/piece of advice for a person who has just moved into HH? Just sit back and enjoy – not only the privilege of having your children, at school, running in and out of gothic doorways, but of being surrounded by the sandstone walls of Australia’s history and of living among the most charming and interesting people in the world. The Live Music Zone arrives in Lane Cove

All the world’s a stage, so they say. Lane Cove now has its very own dedicated street music space, the Live Music Zone, thanks to the drive and inspiration of local creative, Paul Bennett and a tribe of local musicians who were keen to brighten the days and lift the spirits of their neighbours.

In partnership with Lane Cove Council, Paul launched the space in December 2022 in The Canopy for all kinds of buskers: individual musicians, groups, quartets, bands, and more, to showcase their talents and bring joy to those passing by and gathering around.

Since the first show, Paul has experienced a groundswell of people keen to nab a spot in the seven days a week gig diary. The audiences have already commented on the amazing talent they have witnessed – for free – such as the Sydney Samba group who brought the street to life with music and dancing, and local student Matisse Mok whose clarinet playing defied his 12 months experience.

Paul says he has been blown away. “We’ve had so many great performances already,” he says. “I have been so impressed by the amount of people who take time to stop and listen.”

It is hoped this might be a steppingstone to something bigger, potentially even a Lane Cove festival of music, Paul hopes. He envisions something in The Canopy that ties in with the local restaurants.

“Eclectic music makes every day exciting,” says Paul.

“Bringing that to our village is a really special thing.”

⊲ Paul Bennett Paul has been playing his grandfather's Roth 1925 violin since the age of 11, taking on every genre including classical, blues, folk, Gypsy and cool jazz and has recently embarked on a new musical direction as an exciting solo violinist and vocalist, pushing the boundaries in his home suburb of Lane Cove.

Paul was a founding member of the folk blues fusion band The Road Captains, where he honed his skills as an accomplished instrumentalist.

Cool jazz is his genre now with an extensive repertoire of classic jazz standards, played with sensitivity and style.

Matisse is 10-years-old and has just started his musical career.

Nervousness had prevented him from achieving the result he wanted in his first clarinet AMEB exam. So, Matisse sought to improve by playing at all sorts of venues and occasions.

Although his performances are focused on classical music, Matisse has a broad appreciation of varying musical genres. Music inspires and excites him, just as much as playing games on the iPad and eating McDonalds. In his own words, “music flows like a river of colours”.

Alisha is a singer-songwriter, a scholar of jazz and improv, and a force to be reckoned with. She is no stranger to the scene, nor the craft, as she creates music that will see you floating in a flowery bed of harmony, whilst being enraptured by her storytelling.

Playing acoustic rock and pop from the sixties to today, Jeremy is a local 15-year-old performer who can be found busking at the Live Music Zone on Saturdays. Check out Jeremy’s YouTube channel (@JLMusicYT) if only for the wonderful rendition of Arctic Monkey’s ‘505’ where Jeremy plays every instrument, including a mean vocal a la lead singer, Alex Turner, or his similar take on The Killers’ ‘Mr Brightside’. This is only the beginning for this stunning talent.

Penny is a jazz vocalist and a selfconfessed dreamer. Her first degree was in music theory, and she later traveled to New York City to hone her singing skills. Growing up, she sang along to all the jazz greats. “My life is full of heart and music. The artist’s life is always calling,” Penny explains.

Having been witness to live shows from Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Kurt Elling, Wynton Marsalis Big Band with Cecile McLorin Salvant, Pamela Knowles, Billy Stritch, and Stacey Kent, she has definitely learned some tricks of the trade. Penny will be at the Live Music Zone singing jazz standards from the Great American Songbook “for the love of it,” she warmly says.

Eddie Bronson has been a jazz musician since the age of 15. By the time Eddie left Russia where he was born, he had worked with most of Russia's top improvising musicians.

In between stints in Australia, Eddie has spent time living in both Israel and the US (New York) where he spent time playing alongside top composers and improvising musicians.

A founding member of Australia's first spontaneously improvised music ensemble 'Free Kata', over the last 25 years he has been one of the country’s foremost jazz musicians, renowned for his role in the Aria winning group, Monsieur Camembert.

Ryan loves to perform peaceful and meditational piano instrumentals. He turns well-known popular songs into calming, peaceful versions, and also plays his own compositions. A piano teacher across the North Shore, he also plays as part of a duo with his wife Fi under the banner, Ryan & Fi, where they write inspirational and spiritual duets that are about love, life, loss and overcoming life’s challenges.

Michelle Sutton is a 26 year old pop/ folk singer songwriter from Sydney, currently living on Cammeraygal Land. She has been writing songs with guitar and ukulele since she was 12, busking since she was 16 and playing open mics and gigs around Sydney since she was 18 years old.

Her main songwriting influences are Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, Camp Cope and Kate Miller Heidke. She has performed at Shoreshocked Festival 2021, played at Marrickville Music Festival 2022 and performed as part of the Inner West Music Marathon. She has been releasing music since 2020, most recently the defiantly joyful and empowering single ‘Gutless Wonder’ in November 2022. She plays a combination of her original songs as well as country, folk and pop classics and contemporary hits. She loves to perform and make people laugh with her self-deprecating, witty lyrics and stories.

Sydney Samba is a multicultural collective of drummers and dancers who play the vibrant, explosive and irresistible music of the Brazilian carnival. Playing the traditional percussion instruments of the famous Rio and Bahian blocos, Sydney Samba delivers a repertoire that ranges from world famous Carnival Samba to the Caribbean inflected samba-reggae; to the folkloric Afro-Bahian Afoxe to the more contemporary sounds of hip hop and funk. They have provided a carnival spark to a number of outdoor events, including the Great Australian Beer Spectacular, Canberra Beer Fest, Global Rhythms Festival, Meatstock Festival, the Easter Show, Parramasala, Creativity Unleashed and more.

Elizabeth is a scholar of music, who majored in Classical Voice at AIM in Sydney. She performs opera, operetta, musical theatre, oratorio, recitals, classical contemporary crossover and dabbles in some contemporary music. A regular soloist for The Christian Science Church, Elizabeth has performed with Troupe Viva and with The Sydney Welsh Choir.

A solid singing career since 2006, she has toured Australia as part of The Ten Sopranos, and performed many roles.

Her highlights include: Mezzo Soloist in Christmas Oratorio under Dr Steve Watson for The Beethoven Society of Australia, Alto Soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria under Philip Chu for The Australian Institute of Music, Lichas in Hercules and Ino in Semele for Opera Events.

More recently Elizabeth has played Flora in La Traviata, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and has recently taken to full-time busking across the whole of Sydney.

Eclectic music makes every day exciting, Bringing that to our village is a really special thing.

I have a dream …

While not planning to retire or drop off my perch any time soon I admit that I am starting to plan My Grand Trip – the one I will take when my commitments are fewer and I can afford to tour the world in a more leisurely fashion. By Adrienne Witteman

I

’ve long harboured a dream to spend 12 months circling the globe, revisiting my favourite places for an extended stay. It also answers quite nicely a question frequently asked of me: Where is your favourite place in the world?

First I’d head to Chile, the longest country in the world, home of the Pisco Sour and diverse, extreme scenery from Atacama Desert in the north to majestic Torres del Paine and Patagonia in the South.

Travelling north, I’d take a beach and golf break at beautiful Los Cabos in Mexico where the vibe is smart/ laidback – and perfectly sympatico with Australia – eating quesadillas and mole, washed down with a refreshing mojito or two.

And while I’m on a roll with hot and spicy, I’d then fly to Arizona and New Mexico. I can never have enough of the Grand Canyon, those wild desert landscapes and sunsets, with ancient saguaro cacti, jumping cholla, javelinas, coyotes and roadrunners and would top it off with an art overdose in Sante Fe. With so many galleries and studios in one street, I will be sure to find some tempting gifts.

I reacquainted myself with New York

last September and for the first time there, felt my five days was just too short. Indeed New York does not sleep and never fails to disappoint. Take me back for a month this time.

While I’ve only just returned from there, I will always want “one last trip” to Africa. Huge intracontinental differences ensures that it always surprises and never disappoints.

Then northbound once more I’ll visit Spain and Portugal. Again, it is a lifestyle choice. The relaxed ambience of both countries, the brilliant sunshine and vibrant colours, perfect sandy beaches, great golf courses and restaurants that stay open beyond midnight.

Next on the agenda will be Austria so as to envelop myself in the music of Mozart, Strauss, Schubert and Haydn.

Why, I might even revisit my teenage ballroom dancing lessons and see if I can’t score an invite to the Concordia summer ball.

Then purely for the dramatic landscapes of its lochs and isles, and in honour of my mum, I’ll make a final visit to Scotland. It has to be June, July or August so that I can roam the glens until late, enjoying the beautiful long evenings and clear starry skies I

heard so much about in my childhood.

From Scotland I’ll head east to Japan, my home for a year in 1979/80. I barely scraped the surface then and subsequent visits always leave me wanting more so I’ll devote at least two months of my year here, incorporating the stunning autumn season of brilliant red, orange and golden hues.

Finally, and since I’ll need some sense of peace in my life after the excitement of this 12 months of travelling, I’ll revisit Bhutan. Here, where it is beautiful, unsophisticated and unspoilt, I will take time to reflect on all that I have seen and done in a lifetime of travels.

What bliss ….

Of course with a decade or two of travelling still to go, I’ve not allowed for places still high on my bucket list: Antarctica and the Arctic, Galapagos and Costa Rica. I suspect that year of revisiting may just turn into two!

The reality of being an incompetent dance mum WORDS: CAROLYN SWINDELL There are many hats you are forced to wear as a parent.

But there’s one role I’m struggling to embrace.

Teacher, we all know, after the trials of the past few years.

Actor, pretending to enjoy going to the park and endlessly pushing the child on the swing, knowing that every minute outdoors is an investment in that night’s bedtime, but man, it’s tedious. Doctor, struggling to diagnose every rash and bump and wondering how to go to Emergency without seeming neurotic. Grown-up, reminding ourselves that seeming neurotic doesn’t matter.

Dance Mum.

Parenting thrusts you into places you never thought you’d go (remember promising yourself that your kids will never be bribed with golden arches? Good times).

For most of these jobs, we roll with it. We embrace them, ignoring the fact that the pay is terrible, conditions appalling, and that your new boss is a teeny, tiny dictator.

My daughter, nine years of sass and attitude that I’m trying to channel constructively without quashing, is a dancer.

Hip hop, lyrical, acro and musical theatre. She’s tried and rejected tap and classical. She’s enthusiastic, You love and quite good. No signs yet of being the kid, so you committed a prodigy, but she adores it.

start to love what they love

Because you love that dictator. You love this kid and their needs and their whims and as they get older, their passions become your passions - My Little Pony, Minecraft, the trippiness of In the Night Garden and Yo Gabba Gabba.

You love it because they love it. Except for the park. That one will always be just going through the slow-moving motions. You love the kid, so you start to love what they love.

Of all the challenges I knew to expect when becoming a mother, this one caught me by surprise and has exposed my gross incompetence in what for others, are apparently basic mothering skills.

She has always been a pink and sparkly girl. I tried valiantly to push her towards toy trucks and Hot Wheels, but apparently my desire to use my progeny to help break down the patriarchy was less important to her than doing whatever she pleased.

Good.

When her desire to dance was clear, we did trial sessions at several studios, settling on one that seems as far from THAT show as possible. I didn’t want her becoming one of those girls and I didn’t want to be one of those mothers.

I quickly learned that the danger of the latter happening was low.

ADVERTORIAL I am a complete failure as a Dance Mother.

No matter how hard I try – and I have tried; I’ve looked slyly out of the corner of my eye at the other mothers and tried to emulate their skills, watched You Tube videos, practiced over and again – I cannot wrangle a sleek pony-tail or bun. I cannot master smoothing away those bumps that we called ‘cockroaches’ when I was in high school AND hold it while I corral it all in a hair tie. Whatever of her lovely locks I manage to capture, they never stay captured for long.

I now have an unspoken agreement with the owner of the studio – as long as it looks like I’ve at least tried, she’ll sort out my mess as soon as I leave. With a few deft flicks of the wrist, my daughter’s formerly uncooperative hair shines and bounces like she’s in a Bloch dancewear catalogue.

The hair problem though is easily fixed. My other Dance Mother deficiencies will be harder to address.

Mostly because I don’t want to.

The colour of our world In a discussion dealing with the bigger issues of life, the question emerged ‘’why do we say green with envy?’’.

Why not puce or beige or vermillion?

The colourful spectacle of World Pride celebrations in Sydney and of our Prime Minister smeared with multiple colours at the Holi festival in India serve to remind us of the importance of colour throughout the world.

See, a proper Dance Mother has ambition for her dancing child. She’ll know the routines well enough by concert day that she’ll nod along as though her chin were also on stage.

Advertising agencies give careful attention to the selection of the most appropriate colour that will help to influence the consumer. Interior designers and fashion designers give careful attention to colour to enhance the appeal of their creations. Psychologists turn their minds to the influence of colour on all aspects of daily life – and yet cultural influences are also in play.

An incompetent Dance Mother knows that kids’ dance concerts can be arduous events and that the more surprises you can leave for yourself for the day, the faster that three hours will fly.

In East Asian cultures the accepted funeral colour is white, representing purity and re-birth. In stark contrast, the Western world’s inclination is towards black, representing solemnity and mourning.

A proper Dance Mother will smile indulgently at the concert music being on endless repeat at home for months before the concert. She’ll be proud her child is practicing so hard because that’s what you have to do if you want to make it in dance.

An incompetent Dance Mum will not bend to any such request. She won’t let her house sound like a supermarket, with covers of just eight songs on a maddening loop.

No, this particular incompetent Dance Mother’s son, my daughter’s older brother, played alto saxophone in the primary school band the year they did A-Ha’s Take on Me. I am battle-scarred by all that diligent ear-worm practice – of a song I had previously loved - and I’m afraid my daughter is the victim of this hardgained wisdom.

A proper Dance Mother cares about her child’s flexibility, she’ll even talk with the child about their body shape when that child is nine years old and clearly in a healthy weight range for their age.

An incompetent Dance Mother is more worried of the prospect of teenage eating disorders and just wants her kid to dance because they enjoy it.

Yes, I’m wearing a hat. I didn’t expect it, and most Dance Mother hats don’t suit me. Perhaps I can make like a milliner and fashion my own Dance Mother hat, one that embraces my incompetence and works for both my tiny dancer and for me.

The spectrum of colours that we see on our wall when the sun strikes the open louvre windows is magical.

And so it is in life. Individually we display our different and unique colours: reflected in personality, values, interests. In my tradition the colours of life might also be described as the fruits of the Spirit “charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, selfcontrol, chastity.”

But, it is in the mix of colours where real beauty and true value lies. By each person making their unique contribution to our local community, it creates a caring, strong, generous and rich environment for us all – truly a unique, desirable palette.

So there is every reason and encouragement to savour, celebrate and appreciate the diversity of all within our neighbourhood - skin of brown or black or white; hair of silver or blonde or dark or none; eyes of blue or hazel or grey.

And should you chance, along the way, to meet with others feeling blue or down-hearted take a moment to express genuine concern; to engage in open conversation, to provide careful nurture and personal reinforcement.

Your interaction may well result in the colour of their world becoming lighter – not so much characterised by the darkness of despair but progressing towards the delight of the light.

Oh yes, that question about green with envy. Yet again we can blame that fellow Shakespeare who, in at least three of his plays, associated green with envy and jealousy.

Local AFL Club, the Cats, readies for its season in great shape WORDS: JONO LADMORE

E

stablished in 2007, Lane Cove AFL Club, the “Cats”, use the same striped guernsey and colours as the Geelong Cats. The Club song also mimics the Geelong Cats, replacing Kardinia Park with Lane Cove’s own Blackman Park.

The Club has grown significantly over recent years. As of today the Club has over 700 members and over 300 children registered and playing AFL on a weekly basis during the winter months. Like every club, the administration engine is staffed by a crew of passionate volunteers steering the club in the right direction. We see ourselves as a family club and are working hard to engage with as many aspects of the Lane Cove community as possible.

The Club has had a lot of success off the field. The Club was awarded the Best Junior Club award in 2016 and 2018 by Sydney AFL, the most prestigious award available to any junior club. Our coaches have also been recognised.

In 2017, Peter Beck won the Sydney Auskick Coach of the Year and in 2019 Greg Byrne won the Youth Coach of the Year award. This has translated into success on the field as well. Last year we had three sides compete in grand finals, but more importantly, teams across the club performed well above expectations and players finished the season with a sense of achievement.

Coaching is an important part of the club, and although there are predominantly volunteers in these roles, time

and effort is given to developing kids at all skill levels at any age.

“We have a strong coaching team that works across age groups to help the girls and boys enjoy their football. From Auskick upwards, we focus on ensuring strengths and weaknesses are identified and worked on, allowing kids of any skill level to join at any age and play the best level of football they can”, said Dave Groocoe, Director of Boys Football.

This year the club has started an elite talent program for players who want to extend themselves with professional coaches. This is in addition to the Swans and Giants players academies that are also run each year. The talent program is a great opportunity for players to work on areas of their game under expert tuition. The program has so far been a real success and will continue to run in future seasons.

Auskick is the AFL’s starter program for kids aged up to eight years. This is where the future Buddy Franklins learn to love the game of AFL. They are taught basic skills: kicking, handballs, marking the ball and running, in a really fun environment for all. AFL is a unique game that requires 360 degree vision and quick disposal of the ball to avoid getting caught, so the focus on hand-eye-foot skills is critical. Parents are also encouraged to get involved.

kids involved”, says Nina Baulch, Director of Auskick.

In addition to the traditionally strong boys involvement in the club, in recent years the girls AFL program has thrived. Starting from two players seven years ago, the club has over 100 girls playing in their respective teams.

This year the club is also fielding an U18 girls team for the first time. These girls have developed life long friendships outside of the school environment and look forward to preseason starting in January each year.

Earlier this year, Lane Cove AFL Club formed a partnership with Lane Cove Bowling Club. The purpose of this partnership is to explore further opportunities where these two great community groups can work together.

“The two sporting club cultures are very community focussed and complementary. By working together we will be able to develop a stronger club environment, with broader community involvement which will continue to improve the site into the future”, said Bevan Piper, Chairman of Lane Cove Bowling Club.

Glenn Poynton, President of Lane Cove AFL was equally excited. “The combined membership will have diversity across all ages and by working together we can continue to see the club develop this wonderful community asset.

Forging connections in our community is our priority."

No one is quite sure where the partnership will end up but early signs are promising with events being held successfully at the Bowling Club. A recent example was the guernsey presentation, which the Cats’ principal sponsor Belle Property attended.

Belle staff assisted with the handing out of guernseys and having a kick around with the kids. The Belle team quickly realised how important the number on the guernsey is, as it reflects your idol from an AFL team. Number 23 is the most sought after.

It is an interesting fact that Australian rules was played in Lane Cove from as early as 1880 at St Ignatius College Riverview. The founder and first rector at the college, Fr Joseph Dalton was from Victoria and found Rugby "too rough", so introduced Australian Rules as the official exclusive sport. The college played in the local Sydney seniors competition due to the fact that they were one of the only schools playing the game. Ultimately, since they could only play at home, meaning other Sydney teams had to travel across the river (a long trip), and the mismatch between the teams, Rugby became the official school sport in 1891.

interview: Amanda Jordan Amanda Jordan (70), is long-term resident of Artarmon and a member of the Willoughby - Lane Cove State Emergency Services unit (SES). A retired social worker and counsellor, she has recently been assisting floodravaged communities in Western NSW.

 What initially attracted you to the SES? My husband died in 2019, shortly after I retired from all my professional work. I thought the SES would be a good place to learn new skills while at the same helping the community.

In my recent years in the SES, I have helped to manage and maintain the equipment used by SES volunteers to clean up after storm damage, drive SES vehicles and I’m currently the Public Information Officer, liaising with Councils and community groups in the local area.  What took you to Western NSW? We’ve all heard about the floods in the Murray-Darling river system this year. Some of the SES units out there are quite small, and when there is major storm or flood damage, they call on help from other parts of the state.

In the past few months, I’ve been sent to Wentworth, Barham, Balranald, Broken Hill and Menindee, all of which were severely impacted by this year’s major flooding events.  What kind of work were you doing in Western NSW? Most of the media coverage shows flooded homes and businesses with SES boats heading out to rescue people.

That work is important and life-saving, but there is also a lot of other work going on to make sure local residents know when to expect the flood waters and informing them about evacuation procedures.

Residents need to know what kind of help is available, and how to access it. During a flood, residents often have no power to charge phones and watch television, so it’s important that people from the SES and other services are out and about making contact and providing information.

I was liaising with residents through community meetings as well as visiting individual streets and houses and knocking on doors. I also filled sandbags and help clean up after floods. Moving livestock is another common task related to floods. In Coomealla, near Wentworth, I helped to evacuate a couple of hundred dairy goats that were at immediate risk of drowning.  What can residents in the Lane Cove area do to avoid flood and storm damage?

Whenever there is rain in Sydney, the SES receives calls from people who have water coming into their homes through ceilings and light fittings. This is usually because the gutters are full of leaves and other debris, so the number one thing everyone can do is to make sure gutters are cleaned regularly. This is particularly important in the leafy lower north shore of Sydney.

Even apartment-dwellers have a role to play here, making sure the owners corporation is regularly checking and clearing gutters.

It is also important to keep trees trimmed. If high winds are forecast, don’t park your car under a tree and think about where you walk. You don’t want to be in the wrong place when a tree branch falls.

One of the most important things to remember is never ever to drive through flood waters. You never know what is under the water, and sometimes a road can become so compromised that it collapses. It’s best to drive home another way or park your car away from the flood and take shelter.

Thanks to everyone who was out and about celebrating Autumn Harmony last month, particularly our Kaleidoscope of Lane Cove signature event. It’s important to celebrate our multicultural community and it’s always fun to try new foods and experience other traditions.

Lane Cove Council’s works depot is almost off the grid year-round, thanks to new solar panels and batteries. The works depot, on Lloyd Rees Drive, has 138 solar panels to run the depot, which includes a workshop, mechanics shed, bush regeneration space, nursery, security lights, and onsite office. It bolstered Council’s commitment to assist our community to achieve an 80% reduction in emissions by 2036.

Dog park re-opens

I’m pleased our furry friends are back enjoying the dog park at Blackman Park this April. After it was closed because of a sinkhole, Council has been working hard to restore it to its former glory. There’s new lights, fresh turf and fencing, ready to enjoy yearround.

Wadanggari Park

The new Wadanggari Park is edging closer to completion. The giant playground, with a banksia theme, is being installed in three stages.

It’s on track to open later this year in St Leonards. It will be a stunning complement to the new library being built right next door. The playground and library will open mid-year while the 300-space car park opened last month.

The Bob Campbell Oval Masterplan has moved to the tender phase.

The plan was approved at the February Council meeting, with a report on the tender to be considered by Council later this year.

“I’ve been told I need to have a front tooth taken out and I need to wear a denture for up to a year before I can have an implant, are there any alternatives?”

HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT?

Dr See says: Losing a front tooth can be a traumatic experience for anyone, especially if it happens suddenly due to an accident or injury. Fortunately, with advances in dental technology, it is now possible to replace a missing tooth immediately with a dental implant.

Dr Andrew See has dedicated the last 20 years to Aesthetic Dentistry and has unique qualifications in cosmetic dentistry and rehabilitation.

An immediate implant is a procedure where a dental implant is placed directly into the socket of the extracted tooth at the time of extraction. This can save time and reduce the number of dental appointments needed. One of the main benefits is that it helps to preserve the bone in the jaw. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins to deteriorate, which can cause the remaining teeth to shift and become misaligned. By placing an implant directly into the socket, the bone is stimulated and encouraged to grow, which helps to prevent bone loss. Another benefit of an immediate implant is that in some instances, a provisional tooth can be placed on the implant at the same time.

The immediate implant procedure itself requires advanced surgical training. After the tooth is extracted, the implant is placed into the socket, and a temporary or provisional crown can be attached to the implant. The provisional crown is usually made of acrylic or resin and is designed to look and feel like a natural tooth. In some instances, the provisional crown can be the original tooth. The provisional crown is then replaced with a permanent crown once the implant has fully integrated with the surrounding bone.

Let’s look at a case we completed recently: Barbara saw us because she noticed that one of her front teeth were moving. She never used to have a gap between her two front teeth and now she did. The tooth was a bit loose and sometimes she would have pus coming out of it. We found that the tooth had localised gum disease that was destroying the bone supporting it. If this situation was ignored and monitored, the bone loss would spread to her adjacent teeth. After careful planning, the treatment to stop the bone loss was to extract the tooth and place an immediate implant with provisional crown. She walked out without ever needing to wear a denture.

This includes a three year Masters in Aesthetic Dentistry from the prestigious King’s College London and a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology.

Dr See completed his Fellowship by primary and secondary examinations for The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS).

FRACDS is the mark of professional achievement in dentistry and demonstrates attainment of an advanced level and skill in Dentistry.

ne of my favourite subjects at school was history.

So it is probably not surprising that I enjoy reading about the history of medicine. I find it fascinating as to how much has evolved, even over just the past hundreds of years in the world of medicine, health care and of physicians (doctors). Surgical instruments used in the past would seem scary and medieval by today’s standards.

Conditions which in olden times would be fatal (especially infections), are now effectively treated or even completely eradicated now with modern medicine.

BELOW ARE A FEW INTERESTING HISTORICAL PERIODS AND MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS THAT YOU MIGHT FIND INTERESTING:

Hippocratic Oath Greek physician Hippocrates (born 460 BC) is often referred to as the father of modern medicine. He is known for his conviction that diseases did not have a supernatural origin (against the then-held common belief that disease could only be treated by witch doctors and shamans). The recording of patient medical histories was founded during his time. His writing of the Hippocratic Oath, was symbolically sworn by physicians to practice medicine ethically, and this code of medical ethics is still relevant for doctors today.

Psychiatric Care Mental health care has thankfully advanced from a few centuries ago where it was common for asylum patients to be beaten, starved, chained, bled, made to vomit, whirled in chairs and even displayed as zoo animals. Considered one of the founders of modern psychiatry, French physician Philippe Pinel became head of a psychiatric hospital in 1793.

He revolutionised care by arguing that patients should be treated with kindness and with compassionate psychological treatments before any attempts with physical approaches, and that sufferers should be seen as having a disease, and not simply as demon-possessed or of sinful behaviour. His advocation of humane hospital conditions and employment of empathetic staff would lead to a dramatic decrease of inpatient asylum deaths.

The Lane Cove Bushland Conservation Society’s autumn plant sale is to be held on the April 29 in the Plaza and will have a good selection of inexpensive suitable plants.

Stall volunteers will be able to advise which plants are suitable for your garden. The income from the stall goes towards helping the society in its work protecting local bushland areas.

Many local small birds have disappeared from our gardens and bushland because of the lack of suitable habitat offering protection and food. You can help in remedying by planting a selection of suitable native plants.

Memories of Woodford Bay WORDS: PETER BEHR

I

lived in Northwood in the 1950s into the 1960s with a view of Woodford Bay from our house. A beautiful big bay with six or so boats moored around the it. Not like it is today with 250 boats or so, all stationary in the bay.

In the bay there were three wooden swimming enclosures – one privately owned on the Northwood side, another on the western Longueville shore and another on the northern shore.

In 1950 and 1951, my parents would take me swimming in the private pool, but you had to pay the lady who owned the pool. She lived in the last house on the western side of Northwood Rd. However, once 1955 rolled around, and the Christmas holidays arrived, my friends and I would go swimming in the northern pool most days. One week we would swim in the morning, and the next week in the afternoon - whenever the tide was high. Near the end of an afternoon swimming, my mother would lean out a window of our house and blow on a scout whistle, which I could hear at the pool and knew then it was time to go home.

Some of us started to learn to sail in the bay in boats that

were stored in the sailing club shed on the western shore. I started learning to sail in the bay on a friend’s boat and my mother, who knew nothing about sailing, could see us from our house. She became very worried because all she could see was this little boat capsizing and not sailing. She rang my friend’s mother to tell her that we were capsizing. She was put at ease when she was told that capsizing was what we set out to do.

We all joined the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club and started to race the various sailing boats. When a southerly wind blew into the bay all the racing boats would run down into Woodford Bay, with spinnakers up, to a rounding buoy before heading back out onto the river to finish the race at Longueville Wharf.

During our teenage years, my friends and I became proficient sailors and continued racing our boats from the Lane Cove Club well into our adult life and so Woodford Bay became our friend where some of our boats were stored, either in the sailing club shed, or in some of the private boat sheds scattered around the Woodford Bay shores.

April Exhibitions at Gallery Lane Cove 5 - 29 April 2023 New immersive exhibitions and interactive spaces reflecting on the natural environment and personal connections to physical landscapes.

Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios presents two new exhibitions from local artists and a pop-up Creative Space for its April exhibition program.

During the month of April, the gallery welcomes Pacific Traces a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Eastland, and Embrace by Creatives Connect.

Through pastels, watercolour, and poetry, Sydney-based artist Elizabeth Eastland documents a six-month sailing journey through the tropical islands of Fiji and New Caledonia. This new body of work forms a multi-arts installation reflecting the multiple perspectives of the journey, running through time and taking place over a thousand sea miles. Beneath this story, also lies a more personal narrative to the artist, a poetic dialogue with her father during the time he was dying.

Elizabeth’s artworks layer memories of past and present as she reminisces on her early childhood in the Pacific Islands, and finds joy and friendship with the people she meets during her travels in these distant, yet familiar

locations. Elizabeth reflects, “In the gentle and clear waters of the islands, as I painted, wrote and played with the islanders, I reflected that we cannot always see the grand narrative, and perhaps life is approached most fully by being present, by living fully, as a series of vivid moments.”

Exhibiting alongside this show, Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios also presents local group Creatives Connect. Formed by artist Lisa Shepherd, Creatives Connect is a group of women, each with their own unique practice, who meet regularly to connect, support, share and create.

Showing for the first time as a group, Creatives Connect’s exhibition Embrace features a diverse range of artistic approaches, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, jewellery and illustration. Although each artist’s practice is different, the exhibition hosts underlying explorations into nature, mental and physical landscapes, and contemporary craft practices.

Coinciding with the school holidays, the gallery space will also hold a popup Creative Space with free drop-in craft activities and interactive artworks.

Bridging the two exhibitions, this space is a great opportunity for children

Bob Odenkirk returns in this comedy about the Chair of an English Department in what he labels a “mediocre college”. Brutal with the truth and curmudgeonly, Odenkirk plays a man who from the outset isn’t entirely likeable, which given Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, appears to be his schtick. The supporting cast which includes Mireille Enos playing wife Lily Devereaux are excellent as far as episode one goes.

Is it about Fleetwood Mac? Is it? Is it? You can’t get past the rumours on the internet. Daisy Jones & The Six follows the band deep into the world of 1970s-era mid-tempo rock centred on The Six's two lead singers, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, as well as their ensuing love triangle. Less late-night illegal binges in Laurel Canyon, more stolen kisses backstage while wearing the best costumes.

The multi-award-winning series about an American coach heading up an English soccer team is back for a third series. It appears everyone you meet adores this show on account of the vulnerability and heart-on-sleeve moments that are stuffed in every scene. It’s schmaltzy, for sure, but easy on the eyes and much like a soap opera that bears repeated viewing.

In 2018, Australia first fell in love with the Ferrone family when they discovered the trials and joys of living through 60 years of Australian history in the hit series Back In Time For Dinner. Now they’re back, joining Annabel Crabb on a history of the corner shop. It’s a delightful retracing of time, great for adults and kids to watch together.

The Star Wars show that had everyone in tears at the end of the last series is back. Not a dry eye in the house (at least our house). It takes the Star Wars universe to whole new levels and brings more colour and history to what is a well-known and well-appreciated story line that is now approaching 50 years old.

Apparently this is based on the Murdochs so, who knows, will someone in their 90s marry for a fifth time (Rupert gets to dust down the old pre-nups again)? This is the last season of the hit show that has won audiences and critics alike. It’s slick as Mad Men with a script that sounds chock-full of cliches.

If that pairing piques your curiosity and you’re new to this, best rewind to series one.

The first thing this book tackles is when to start training and how to get yourself in the right head space to be successful. According to Glowacki the ideal time to train is between 20 to 30 months. She writes that parents often make the mistake of waiting for their child to be “ready”.

She says it is more useful to ask yourself if your child is “capable” of using the potty.

The Oh Crap! method is about commitment and consistency as opposed to rewards. Your child doesn’t receive treats or stickers for using the potty successfully. In our house we have been giving praise and a high five. Oh, and we let her carry the potty to empty into the toilet (while I follow closely behind, heart in mouth, as she sloshes her way down the hall). This seems to be reward enough for her.

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton Birnam Wood is a complex and darkly funny examination of the human impulse to ensure our own survival.

If you feel overwhelmed by the thought of toilet training then Glowacki’s book is a good place to start. As she points out you are the expert on your child so you can tweak her advice to suit your family. She divides the training into manageable blocks of learning so that if things start to go awry you can easily go back a step. The process is described as taking your child from Clueless to I Peed to I am Peeing to I Need to Pee. I found this simplification reassuring and it gave me an easy way to measure how my child was going.

Glowacki goes through common myths and misconceptions as well as common problems that come up: Why won’t my child poo in the potty? How do I avoid potty power struggles? How can I get their day care provider on board? Etcetera. There is a whole chapter on poop.

Her book is very informative and I can’t do it justice here. I hope I have, however, given you enough of a precis to be able to judge if it would be helpful for you.

Did you know that every year on Easter Monday, the townspeople of the Southern French town of Haux crack more than 4500 eggs to make a giant omelet that feeds more than 1000 people. The origin of this tradition dates back to when Napoleon and his army were traveling through the South of France.

Imagine the pressure of the chickens of the weeks before! The planning, the feed, the cuddles.

Do you love an omelet? It’s almost so simple, that perhaps it is often overlooked. A freshly made omelet, with fresh free range eggs, a touch of butter, just chopped chives and a smear of rich creamy brie in the center is a dish of beauty.

The trio of the omelet's brilliance is as much to do with the quality of the eggs, as it is the quality of the pan used, and then the deftness & experience of the maker.

Like most cooking, your mise en place is crucial. Room temperature eggs, butter, herbs, cheese at the ready, along with your favourite side dishes - crispy bacon, smoked salmon, sautéed mushrooms or roasted tomatoes, all warm in the oven ready to add. A bowl ready to whisk your eggs, a fork is fine, a silicone spatula to scrape all the mixture into the pan, and a small lifter to transfer your omelet to the plate.

Two eggs cracked into your bowl, please don’t add salt or milk here.

Salt will toughen the eggs before cooking, and there is no need for milk, if anything, I like a touch of cream, or a tablespoon of water. By hand as well, a food processor or stick blender will cut all the lovely protein bonds, and these are what keeps the moisture in the eggs, over whisking leads to a dry leather chew. No thank you.

This is ballet in the kitchen, it’s a quick pirouette of cracking, whisking, swirling, never taking your eyes off the pan, using a cloth to hold the handle of the pan, for even the “oooh, ouch, it’s hot” will mean an overcooked rubber slab, instead of a delightful just set barely colored golden reward.

My choice for an omelet pan is a lead free ceramic coated pan, I only use this pan for omelets & crêpes. No metal scratches, and after heating evenly, a swirl of butter melts immediately, just to the nutty pale brown before adding the whisked eggs.

Swirling to cover the base of the pan, and lowering back on the heat, it’s a lift in three places to let the egg mixture to run underneath, form a just cooked base, where you can then add fillings of a slice of brie, chervil, chives or parsley, remove the pan from the heat, tip on a slight angle to help the curl of the just set eggs ready to fold over on itself, nudged along with your lifter, and glider straight onto your warm plate.

Another pat of butter, a sprinkle of sea salt & freshly ground black pepper, and bliss is yours.

Glimpses of another world: a true story of a medical emergency in Botswana

1978. One of the first weekends we were resident in Gaborone (Gabs), Botswana, I was walking around the brewery, trying to get a feel of things when I was suddenly assailed with a terrible pain in my back.

To cut a long story short, Wally, the brewery’s faithful German secretary eventually arranged for me to be admitted to The Princess Marina hospital in Gabs. An intern came and took blood samples. A drip was attached. “That is to stop him escaping,” announced Dougal my then six-year-old. Diana, my wife, brought me food from home. By Sunday morning I was feeling fine again.

Then I was told: “Our X-ray machine here is broken and the technician has to come from Jo’burg, so you must go in the truck, with all the other patients, to Ramotswa, tomorrow, which is Monday,” I was told.

“What is at Ramotswa?”

He berated me for a few minutes saying, “These are useless, I wasn’t there, and you have discharged yourself anyway.”

I returned to my post at the brewery. We decided I had probably suffered from a kidney stone, which passed. It was never properly diagnosed though.

When the employees at the brewery found out what had happened, they said, “You went to the Princess Marina and you are still alive?” They looked at me in amazement; a couple of them touched me to see if I was real.

“Why, where do you go when you are sick?” I asked.

“Us, Baragwanath, always Bara, never Princess Marina.”

When I asked how a citizen of Botswana could get treated in a South African hospital they laughed saying: “we just borrow a friend or relatives’ pass book.”

The now re-named Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg had and still has a very good reputation in South Africa and beyond.

“Mission station. They have an X-ray machine.”

“Ok, I will go to the mission, but I will not go in the truck, I can drive myself.”

“You must go in the truck.”

“No.” I eventually won the argument.

On Monday morning, when I asked if the drip could be removed so I could drive, another argument ensued, where I again prevailed.

I duly arrived at the mission hospital, about fifty kilometres to the South of Gabs. The hospital had a very good reputation.

I was met in the car park by a woman speaking with a strong German accent. She was covered in blood from head to foot.

She took one look at the form I presented her with and said, “Crazy, zey mus’ be mad.”

Looking at the woman, from her appearance it seemed to me that there were others who had much greater need of medical attention than anything that was afflicting me. “You can’t do it then?” I asked. She shook her head, returned the form to me and I drove off.

When I arrived back at the Princess Marina the hospital head said to me, “The machine is now fixed. Come at 7:30 tomorrow morning and I will be there. We also need another blood sample.” This was blood sample number three. I had by this time discharged myself.

There was no sign of the doctor the next day at 7:30 but nevertheless I was injected with some sort of substance and the technician spent an hour or more taking X-rays while turning me upside down and round and round on his equipment. I left and went to work, returning in the early afternoon to retrieve the X-ray plates and show them to the hospital head, who I found in the leprosy ward.

Thinking about the future can be daunting. No one wants to age, and we never know what is around the corner for ourselves or family members. It is also difficult to ask for help. So, planning is essential. Working with family, carers, and service providers will allow you to investigate the support available so you can remain healthy, independent, and continue living in your own home safely and comfortably. Planning means you can be the decision maker, rather than waiting until this may be taken out of your control.

So, what should a plan for the future include?

The first step is to consider the following:  What is important to you?  What care can you do yourself? hat equipment or care might you need now  W or in the future?

Our 100th Combined Anzac Memorial April 25 is a date that holds great significance to our community, marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by the Australian and New Zealand army forces during World War I. Australia’s commemoration on ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli in 1915.

It is a day for all Australians to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of veterans and defence forces personnel who served our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations and a time to commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in our country’s name.

This day of national remembrance is also a time to recognise and show our support to the personnel who are presently on the frontlines.

In Hunters Hill, we traditionally hold a commemorative service on or close to the eve of ANZAC Day. We do this so our local veterans and personnel can attend a service in Hunters Hill, then mark the occasion of 25 April with others from their military squadrons, or attend services in Sydney City or the nation’s capital Canberra.

This year notably marks the 100th year of continuous ANZAC observances hosted by the Hunters Hill RSL SubBranch and Hunter’s Hill Council for our local community.

The service will be held on Friday, 21 April, commencing with a short wreath laying service at 6.30pm at the RSL Memorial Hall, 56 Alexandra Street.

A march will begin at 6.45pm outside the RSL Memorial Hall and culminate at the Town Hall, 22 Alexandra Street, for the main service at 7pm. We would encourage the community to participate in the event and watch the procession.

This is a community event and anyone wishing to pay their respects is encouraged to join us to reflect and commemorate.

We are so fortunate to have a safe and peaceful home in Hunters Hill and are forever grateful to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of the freedom we enjoy.

Skate and Celebrate As part of NSW Youth Week 2023, our Council will be hosting a free, youth Skate and Celebrate event.

Our youth residents are invited to head down to Gladesville Reserve skate park on 28 April from 4:30pm to 8:30pm to be a DJ for a day during an interactive learning experience with the ZuReal DJ School, enjoy a fun skating workshop with Skate Now instructors and watch a skating demo from a home-grown pro skater.

This is a great opportunity for young people to gather with friends and meet new people while listening to some great music with some amazing food on offer.

A lot of people have recently been talking about the government’s proposed changes to the legislation that supports the creation of the Safeguard Mechanism in Australia.

Safeguard what you ask?

Well for anyone who wants us to meet our target of net zero emissions by 2050, this legislation creates a framework to incentivise our largest emitters to reduce their emissions as quickly as possible.

Originally introduced by the prior government, in its revised form this legislative tool will not only require our largest emitters to report on emissions, but importantly what they are doing to reduce them.

Big emitters must at least carry their weight as we pursue the goal of an improved environment and for me there are three key changes to fight for.

They are: ensuring none of the money earmarked to assist companies in their decarbonising efforts can be directed at fossil fuel companies; the full adoption of all 16 recommendations from the Chubb Review ensuring the integrity of Australia’s Carbon Credit Units; and reducing the threshold for participating in this program over time to ensure gross emissions are truly coming down and the number of companies covered by the initiative is ever expanding.

Whether I’ve been successful in this advocacy will be known by the time you read this article.

Here’s to being the change we want to see in this country and in uniting behind true positive industrial reform.

The legislation is not perfect – but it has provided us with a platform to work with the government to strengthen actions taken in this area.

Having reviewed the legislation, I’ve been working with the government to strengthen the Mechanism, so the system delivers a true reduction in gross emissions rather than just a net result on paper.
