Welcome to the February edition of TVO! I hope you’ve enjoyed at least a short period of relaxation over the festive season. Perhaps you have some new goals for the year ahead? With that in mind we thought our first issue for 2026 was the perfect time for a Wellbeing feature.

We’ve partnered with some local businesses to share their insights on wellbeing and they have all generously offered discounts or special offers for TVO readers, so it’s a great time to turn those resolutions into reality.

For many people creativity is a vital part of their wellbeing, whether it be through expression or enjoyment. TVO is proud to promote the vibrant local arts scene and in this issue we are delighted to include local artist and filmmaker Azadeh Nasirloo’s thought-provoking essay on the interconnection between wellbeing and the arts.

We are also celebrating the opening of Lane Cove’s Galuwa Recreation Centre. I have visited a couple of times for a game of pickleball with friends (which I highly recommend!) and it is wonderful to see how popular the centre is already, just a few weeks after opening.

We are sadly bidding farewell to Jim, our fantastic distribution contractor, who makes sure the copies of TVO are delivered safe and sound to all our distribution points. So we are currently recruiting for his replacement – see the advertisement on the inside front cover

Community grants to boost dementia-friendly initiatives across Australia Dementia Australia has opened applications for a new round of Community Engagement grants for up to 12 dementia-friendly community initiatives.

Dementia Australia CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said community groups could apply for up to $10,000 for project ideas that supported their local community to become dementia-friendly.

‘For this year’s grants we have a special focus on people living with young onset dementia and young carers,’ Professor Buchanan said.

To date, Dementia Australia’s Community Engagement Program has funded more than 100 grassroots projects, bringing the total funding since 2018 to more than $1.16 million.

Lane Cove Council has opened community consultation on its Bike Plan 2026, renewing the 2019 Bicycle Plan and mapping cycling priorities for the next decade. The plan will guide the future of cycling infrastructure and sustainable transport locally.

Residents can take part via an online survey, contribute on an interactive map, visit a pop-up stall at The Canopy on 15 Feb, or join a workshop on 16 Feb at the Cove Room. Draft recommendations will later be exhibited for further community feedback before final adoption.

LIFE’S RICH PATTERN

New Year, New Feet No-one likes an operation, but if you’re going to pick the perfect time, maybe protracted lazy summer days combined with sick leave are the way to go. All six weeks of it.

Here’s to the many and unexpected benefits of recuperation I’ve discovered thus far.

New feet (eventually). I can barely hobble in orthopaedic sandals, let alone walk, but hurrah for being able to walk or run without pain again in the near future. Without massaging my feet at dinner, to the collective dismay of my whole family.

No access to mirrors. I can’t remember the last time I saw what I look like as my bathroom stool is too low. I haven’t worn makeup in weeks and it’s delightfully liberating. Possibly alarming.

Hard to say.

Online shopping. I’m not usually that person so it’s been a bit of a revelation, starting with new sheer tinted moisturiser for all skin types. Ironic, I know, given my lack of access to mirrors. Also, a miniature watercolour travel painting set that tucks in your pocket (self-watering brush a marvel). And a year’s subscription to Killer Sudokus. Hoping to complete at least one Killer puzzle in 2026 (they are... not relaxing.)

Wearing the same outfit every day. So liberating. During this summer heat, a t-shirt and shorts can be re-donned for days when you’re not going anywhere in them. Which, it turns out, is most days.

Sharpening my memory skills. Learning every capital city in the world. Brilliant! And so useful! I will be the most soughtafter team member at every trivia night from now on. The hardest ones are when you’ve never even heard of the country (Eritrea? Capital is Asmara in case you’re wondering). It’s great for sharpening geography general knowledge but I confess the novelty’s wearing off - I’ve only reached Tanzania and I’m flagging.

Issuing requests from the couch. These fall roughly into three categories: 1) Stuff I need and can’t do for myself, like preparing a meal. Done always in good grace by my husband. 2) Stuff I kind of need but can do without in the short term, like fetching me chocolate. Usually done in good grace. Debatable whether this fits into 1 (it absolutely does). 3) Stuff I can see, like tidying the kitchen. Instructions in these areas need to be kept strictly to myself. Everyone’s doing their best and well-meaning advice from the couch on an untidy benchtop goes down like a lead balloon.

Hanging with my pooch. My dog Sid is fifteen and we’ve been through a bit together. Having his chin on my knee, rheumy eyes giving me the look of love all day every day is wonderful.

Doing a proper deep dive into SBS. Instead of the usual evening speed scroll clicking on a pile of online rubbish, actually exploring hidden gems on this fabulous free to air channel we’ve missed and adding them to favourites.

Disability permit. I have never knowingly parked in a disabled spot but now I can! The sheer power of the permit, being able to pop it in my bag and onto the dashboard of whosoever’s car has taken me on an excursion. Parking anywhere, for as long as we want.

Gold.

Local news. Having all the time in the world to lean in to local issues. Finally, the toilets in the plaza are getting an upgrade!!

Hands up who can remember the last time the hand dryers ever actually worked? While we’re chatting, any news on the Woollies lifts and travelator?

Practicing the art of not feeling guilty. When your daily shower is an exhausting and protracted exercise of care and caution, it’s great to just lie on the couch and read without feeling guilty, without needing to be anywhere else or do anything for anyone.

Quite liberating.

I recommend it.

Feeling grateful for my health and mobility. I’ll be back on my feet doing handstands (or similar) in a few weeks and now have even more respect for mobility impaired people than before.

Choose to cruise in 2026

Holidays are marvellous events. The planning, the preparation, the experience and then the memories. I hope you all enjoyed a fabulous break somewhere, or if not an away stay, then a relax at home from the day-to-day routine.

While friends often remark that my life seems to be one long holiday, given how often I am flying and cruising, I seldom enjoy a day without some sort of work, even if it is just actioning emails or catching up on accounting. I’m not complaining however as my ‘desk and view’ is often in some superb locations!

January is when I the phone rings more than usual and email numbers multiply as clients are desperate to have plans in place for the months to come. What is hot this year? Cruising close to home (NZ & Australia), Asia (Japan), the Med and Expedition cruising. What is not hot this year? Anything American, but that is hardly surprising. Our weak dollar and the political climate is a turnoff, though for anyone already booked, especially to Alaska, there are no foreseeable issues and we are not recommending cancelling and incurring losses.

The strong focus and appeal for cruising, is not lost on many in Australia. The statistics have just come out and they make for interesting reading. Whereas many might think that cruising is only for the old and baby boomers, half of the under 35s surveyed expressed an interest in choosing this holiday type for 2026. That is a 10% increase on 2024. And the 25-44 age group comprised 44% of cruisers in the USA in 2025.

One reason for this is that cruising has evolved to offer a wealth of experiences targeted at younger people – from spa and 14 THE VILLAGE OBSERVER

wellness themed cruises to others offering golf, cycling, culinary exploration, strenuous walking tours for fitter guests, and more.

Onboard, some ships offer indoor skydiving, trapeze, surfriding and other high energy activities. Secondly, it can be done in a cost-effective manner, and with a lot less effort than if organising for oneself on an independent basis.

The value for money that a cruise may deliver was perfectly demonstrated by a 30-night Mediterranean cruise that I recently booked for clients in July/August 2026. The itinerary travels Venice, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, Bari, Kotor, Giardini Naxos, Palermo, Naples, Rome, Valletta, Trapani, Tunis, Cagliari, Palma de Mallorca, Palamos, Barcelona, Valencia, Cartagena, Malaga, Gibraltar, Cadiz, Tangier, Casablanca, Lisbon, has a couple of overnights and some days at sea. It’s on a 5-star ship, the cost is $43,000 and there are onboard credits of USD3660, say AUD6000. Netting it back that’s AUD37000 – or AUD1234 per couple per day.

Yes, this itinerary is at the other end of the spectrum of more budget-friendly, youth-appealing cruising however it clearly demonstrates the value of cruising. Were you to do the same itinerary by air and car rental, stay in the same standard of hotels with nice views from your room, enjoy three gourmet meals a day, and all the associated wines and spirits and specialty coffees,

plus nightly shows and onboard destination lectures, you’d be hard-pressed to achieve the same pricing. Factor in all the wasted time – at airports, on trains, self-driving – when you could be sleeping while someone else sorts the logistics and it’s a no brainer.

In these budget straitened times, holiday experiences that deliver superior value drive your dollar further. Cruising, where the scenery changes every day and how you cruise customised to suit, ticks a lot of boxes.

Certainly, many of my clients feel similarly and they consistently remark that it’s not just the cruise but also the people. The many dimensions of wellbeing We often talk about wellbeing as if it’s something you have to ‘achieve’ - a state unlocked by the right habits, diet or routine.

But in real life, it’s not so simple. Wellbeing is constantly shifting, shaped by our circumstances, age, environment, and how supported we feel day to day. Physical, mental, emotional, creative and social health all influence each other - when one thing is off, it ripples through the rest.

For this issue, we’ve brought together the expertise of local professionals and community contributors to look at wellbeing from all angles. Even small things - a few minutes of mindful breathing, a short walk, or catching up with a friend - can add up. Wellbeing isn’t about being perfect; it’s about creating a life that feels manageable and connected.

Movement that fits your life Moving your body is a big part of feeling well, but it doesn’t have to mean pushing yourself to the limit. In this issue, Feryx Lim explores Pilates as a practice that works at any stage of life. In your teens, it builds awareness and body confidence; in adulthood, strength and stability; and later on, balance and mobility. The focus is on building a body that moves confidently and comfortably in everyday life.

The key is finding movement that works for you - group classes, walking with friends, or even short routines at home. When it feels supportive instead of punishing, you’re much more likely to stick with it, even when life gets busy.

Nutrition made simple Eating well is another challenge. Busy workdays, family life, and decision fatigue can make ‘healthy eating’ feel overwhelming.

us have a healthier relationship with food. Cooking with family or prepping a few meals in advance can also turn nutrition into something connecting rather than stressful.

Mental health and support Mental wellbeing is just as important. Regular TVO contributor Dr Carl Wong points out that health goals often fail not because we aren’t motivated, but because they’re too vague. Setting specific, achievable goals makes it easier to take small steps, build momentum, and adjust when things don’t go as planned.

For young people, mental health challenges can feel overwhelming. Services like Safe Haven give 12- to 17-year-olds a calm, welcoming space when they’re struggling. Staffed by trained peer workers with lived experience, Safe Haven provides non-judgemental, culturally sensitive support as an alternative to emergency departments. Feeling heard and supported can make a huge difference, especially in moments of vulnerability.

Creativity and connection Wellbeing isn’t just about moving well or eating right - it’s also about meaning and connection. A thought-provoking essay by local writer and director Azadeh Nasirloo reflects on the role of art in wellbeing. Whether you’re creating or enjoying it, art gives people a space to experience and express without needing to fix or solve anything.

Art also helps focus attention, connect body and mind, and make sense of experiences. It can foster belonging and recognition, helping us feel part of something bigger. In short, wellbeing grows not only through what we do physically or mentally, but also through creativity, presence, and connection.

Put together, all these perspectives show that wellbeing is built from small, consistent actions - supported by people, services, and spaces that meet us where we are. It’s not about fixing what’s broken; it’s about creating conditions where we can stay whole.

GALUWA RECREATION CENTRE: a hub for community wellbeing Wellbeing is not just about what we do individually - it’s also shaped by the spaces around us. Accessible, welcoming places for movement, connection and activity can make a huge difference in daily life. For Lane Cove and surrounds, that place is now here: Galuwa Recreation Centre.

After 15 years of planning, consultation, design, and construction, Galuwa is ready to open its doors, marking a new chapter for sport, recreation and community life on Sydney’s North Shore. The centre is designed for everyone - kids, adults, seniors - to move, socialise and take part in community life.

Mayor Councillor Merri Southwood said: The opening of Galuwa Recreation Centre is a proud milestone for our community; it has been many years in the making. This state-of-theart facility will provide residents of all ages with access to sporting, recreational, and social activities in a welcoming environment. We hope it will become a community hub for all.

A place to grow and connect Operated by Sydney Sports Management Group, Galuwa links to existing recreational programs, including the Lane Cove Golf Course. The name ‘Galuwa,’ meaning ‘to climb’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language, reflects the centre’s purpose: a space for growth, activity and connection.

A Community Open Day on Sunday 8 February 2026 invites residents to explore the centre, take part in demonstrations, and experience first-hand how Galuwa supports sport, recreation and community wellbeing.

‘We look forward to seeing families and community members enjoy the centre and the programs it will offer,’ said Mayor Southwood.

Facilities that promote wellbeing Under one roof, Galuwa has eight multi-sport courts, four flexible community rooms, a sprung-floor hall, integrated golf facilities, and social spaces including a bistro and outdoor seating. Whether it’s basketball, tennis, pickleball, group fitness, or community events, the centre gives people plenty of ways to get active and connect with others.

Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper, added: The Galuwa Recreation Centre is a state-of-the-art facility and will make a huge difference to Lane Cove’s sporting community. After years of hard work, this exciting new facility is ... flinging open its doors, and I am happy that the NSW Government could support its delivery through a government-funded grant.

Accessibility and sustainability Accessibility is a priority. Parking accommodates cars, bikes and motorcycles, and spaces are adaptable for different activities.

Sustainability features include solar power, rainwater collection, LED lighting, natural ventilation and EV charging, reducing environmental impact while keeping the space comfortable and efficient.

Navigating an impressive career in orienteering Tracy has permanently lived in Lane Cove since 2001. She was born at the Mona Vale hospital in 1975 and grew up in Seaforth. From three to six years old, she also lived on Lord Howe Island where her father worked at the weather station.

Even at primary school, Tracy was passionate about all kinds of sport but especially team sports. She competed in soccer and swimming events, cycled and played water polo but it was running she loved the most.

‘As a pre-schooler, I remember being a spectator at the school athletics carnival on Lord Howe Island and I couldn’t wait to take part myself. I ran in my first Fun Run there when I was only 4 years old, in bare feet. Mum cycled alongside me for the 3km race from the airport to the jetty, and I managed to beat all her friends who had trained up for the race,’ Tracy told me.

‘When I was growing up, like most people in Australia I’d never heard of orienteering.

Then in 1985 when Australia was hosting the World Orienteering Championships in Victoria, my family and I saw a segment about orienteering on the ABC news. It looked exciting,’ she said.

‘In 1986 when thinking about the Easter holidays Dad thought “why not try camping combined with orienteering?” So, we drove on down to Inglewood, Victoria for the biggest event of the year - the Australian 3-days.

‘I wasn’t keen on the idea of camping on an AFL oval with hundreds of strangers and orienteering solo on the super tricky maps they’d used for the previous year’s World Championships, when I’d only once done orienteering without my dad leading the way.

But I had a fantastic time and was then fully hooked on orienteering.’

Mentally and physically challenging Tracy told me that to be a top-level orienteer you have to be good at both running and map reading and be comfortable at being uncomfortable.

‘It’s a very strenuous sport as you’re running off the tracks through the forest and up and down hills, often on rough ground, so you need to build your strength more than a typical runner.

‘You also need to have a good sense of direction and spatial awareness, and be able to stay mentally calm and logical when you’re making a mistake or under pressure.

There’s rarely a race where you don’t make a mistake, so you have to be okay with that.

You’re trying to run on the edge of your navigational ability when it’s a technical area, and think quickly in making route choices and having the ability to adapt when better options reveal themselves.’

From the age of 13 Tracy started going on training camps most school holidays. Then when she turned 16, she realised she wanted to focus on orienteering above all other sports and started to train seriously.

‘This was mostly because I had the chance to make the Junior World Orienteering Championships (under 21) team to race in Berlin.

‘At first my training involved running occasional 45-minute loops on the edge of Manly Dam or around Manly Dam with my dad. When I began training properly at age 16 my week would also consist of Tuesday and Thursday track interval sessions at Narrabeen athletics track, a 60-70 minute long run and race of about 60 minutes on the weekend.

‘I would give myself one rest day, that might include a swim, walk or cycle. My runs became a little longer over the years (long runs of 90 min), and the athletics sessions moved to the Rotary Athletics track but this structure of two speed sessions and one long run per week worked well throughout my years competing internationally. I

sometimes added in two gym sessions a week too, and some yoga, for strength building and injury prevention,’ she added.

‘The things that have really attracted me to the sport are the mental challenge, immersing yourself in nature, and the friendships and camaraderie surrounding the sport. People talk a lot about their race afterwards, comparing route choices on the map and the printout of the split times to each checkpoint. They talk about where they made mistakes, and which upcoming races to go to. You just don’t get as much dialogue with your competitors in most other sports. And you get to see so many parts of Australia that you would never see otherwise.’

Orienteering is a really big sport in Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland and when she was twenty, Tracy spent six months in Sweden after deferring university for a year. After another year and a half of university she went back to Sweden on exchange for six months and then to Finland for a year to study.

She later moved again to Sweden for the summer to work as an au pair and improve her orienteering, and worked the next year’s summer months as an orienteering coach.

In 2023 Tracy was awarded the Lane Cove Council Individual Sportsperson of the Year Award to acknowledge that from 1991 to 2005 she’d represented Australia at the highest level in four Junior World Orienteering Championships in Germany, Italy, Poland and Denmark, as well as five World Orienteering Championships in Germany, Norway, Scotland, Finland and Japan.

‘There are a lot more opportunities to race and develop your navigation and terrain strength in places like Sweden and Finland than in Australia,’ Tracy told me.

‘In 2000 I went to Canberra for 10 months as I had a job at the Australian Bureau of Statistics working on maps for the 2001 Census. Then early 2001 I moved back to Finland for a couple of months to train in the lead up to the 2001 World Championships near Tampere.

‘The training structure in Scandinavia was a bit different. Instead of the track intervals, there would normally be twice weekly technical training sessions from the orienteering clubhouse. I would do a lot more mountain-biking to get out to the different maps, and much more training through the forest rather than on bush tracks, and a lot of racing on weekends.

Tracy’s brother Grant is also an orienteer and represented Australia at the highest world championships level.

In Hungary and Norway Tracy was also placed 6th in the two World University Orienteering Championships – the best ever results by an Australian.

Tracy met her husband Paul through orienteering and they’ve been together since 2000 and married from 2003. She has three children, Tia (22) Jamie (19) and Kari (17). I asked about Tracy’s plans for the future.

‘I still like to run and am in a running team called the Domain Dashers for the Sydney Corporate Cup, a 6km lunchtime fun run held 18 times a year. I hope to reach my 200th run this year. I also organise the Run 4 Your Life (R4YL) run club, leading 5km runs from my office in Parramatta,’ Tracy said.

‘I’d like to continue improving my Swedish, and I like to sew, draw and do crafts. I also love gardening and habitat restoration. I’d like to become more involved with Bushcare and habitat restoration and work with Landcare and Bushcare groups in remote locations.

Tracy never became a professional orienteer but she’s worked as an orienteering coach in Sweden and also became an environmental scientist.

‘I completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Environmental Geography and Chemistry, and also completed the coursework component of a Masters of Environmental Science in Sweden and Finland,’ she said.

‘I now work as a Sustainability Analyst for Property and Development NSW, and do some orienteering coaching on the side. This includes coaching at the National Junior Development camp, and the upcoming Women’s Orienteering Weekend that is always held around International Women’s Day.’

‘My best results at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) were a 13th in the middle distance, 19th in long distance and 6th in the relay.

The 13th in the middle distance was in Aichi, Japan in 2005, in the last WOC I ran when I was already a mum and this is the best ever middle-distance result by a female Australian.’

‘I hope to stay in good enough shape to enjoy a scenic weekend or holiday long run, like a run through parts of Kosciuszko National Park or the Australian Alps. It would be great to return to some place I really enjoyed orienteering in and just spend my time exploring more with Paul and the kids. I’d also like to do some hut-to-hut mountain hikes and spend more time with friends being creative,’ Tracy concluded.

New Year, New Hope: How Kate and Keith Inspire Kindness and Lasting Impact As the New Year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and planning for what’s ahead. For some this means setting New Year’s resolutions that inspire hope and positive change.

When Kate was a baby, she was diagnosed with liver disease, and this news changed her family’s world overnight. After two liver transplants and countless hospital visits, Kate is now thriving and enjoying life. Her New Year’s resolution is simple yet profound: “To spend more time with family and friends… and for everyone to be kinder to each other.” She’s looking forward to soccer, nippers, and the everyday joys that good health makes possible.

Keith’s perspective is equally inspiring. His resolution is to get more involved in the community. “Volunteering feels like recreation to me, it’s joyful. There’s no downside to doing something kind for someone else,” he says. For Keith, leaving a gift in his Will is another way to make a lasting difference, ensuring that children like Kate receive world-class care for generations to come. “Most of us can think of a time when we really needed someone, and how much it meant when someone stepped in. It’s nice to be able to do that for someone else too.”

Kate and Keith are a powerful reminder that kindness connects us all. Whether through volunteering to supporting families, or planning for the future, every act of generosity helps create a brighter tomorrow for sick kids.

The new food waste bin will be collected weekly on your normal bin day starting March 16 and can be used for all types of food wastes. From vegetable scraps to meat and bones, leftovers, and even mouldy sandwiches found in the bottom of the school bag. Simply place your food wastes into the lined caddy, and then every 2-3 days or when the liner is full, tie it up and pop it into your new maroon lid food waste bin. Even if you are one of our wonderful households who only have a little bit of food waste, be sure to put it out each week as the food waste collected is sent to the EarthPower facility in Camellia where it is turned into a nutrient rich soil improver and renewable energy. Even the smallest scraps can make a big difference!

Wellbeing Welcome back TVO readers in 2026!

Every January, millions of Australians resolve to improve their health as part of their New Year’s resolutions. One Australian consumer study showed that 58% wish they could spend more time on improving their health and wellbeing.

Many will start with the very best of intentions by making dramatic overhauls – cutting out entire food groups or going days without food, doing daily gym exercise workouts, or vowing to completely overhaul their routines overnight.

But by now in February, how many of your overly optimistic resolutions are already unravelling? Not from lack of motivation but because they were unsustainable.

There may be a number of factors contributing to this, including having goals that are too vague, unrealistic and non-measurable.

Many resolutions revolve around the concept of wellbeing, the feature topic of this month’s TVO. Wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life. It is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors.

Wellbeing is strongly linked to life satisfaction and happiness.

Interestingly, happiness may increase with your wealth - but only up to a point. Money is linked to wellbeing because having enough money improves living conditions, allows healthier food choices and increases social status, but conversely working long hours may mean missing out on time with friends, family and other enjoyable pursuits. Studies have shown that it’s the quality of our personal relationships, not the size of our bank balance, which has the greatest effect on our state of wellbeing.

Sounds good? But you’d be correct to think – okay, but how do I go about achieving this and make it my one-month-in-already New Year’s resolution for 2026?

There are many ways to do this. One way is via a well-known acronym called SMART. SMART health and wellbeing goals are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable (or Attainable), Relevant and Time-bound. This will turn vague aims into actionable plans.

• Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve (e.g. ‘walk’ vs. ‘walk 30 mins’) • Measurable: How will you track it? (e.g. minutes, food servings, days)

I find patients often come to me for health advice when they (or someone close to them) has experienced a significant health life event, such as heart attack, cancer diagnosis or acute hospitalisation. Goal success can be significantly related to one’s reasons for motivation. How much do you want to achieve your goal? What will you gain? What will you lose from not achieving your goal? What are your personal expectations?

Examples of other SMART Health Goals are:

Physical Activity • General: I want to exercise more.

• SMART: - I will walk briskly for 30 minutes, 5 days a week, for the next eight weeks to improve my cardiovascular health.

- To improve my bone health, I will start doing tai chi/dancing/ simple dumb-bell weight-training twice weekly.

- To lose fat, I will exercise in the mornings before breakfast.

• Achievable/Attainable: Is it realistic given your current lifestyle? (e.g.10 mins vs. 2 hours)

Nutrition

• Relevant: Does it align with your overall health goals/needs/targets?

• SMART: - Starting tomorrow, I will add one serving of vegetables to both lunch and dinner daily for the next three months to increase my nutrient intake.

• Time-bound: Set a deadline to create urgency (e.g. ‘…by 4 weeks time’) 28 THE VILLAGE OBSERVER

• General: I need to eat healthier.

HEALTH

- I will limit my take-out meals to only once weekly and I will eat more balanced-portion meals – 50% fruit/vegetables, 25% carbohydrates, 25% protein.

- I will have a regular breakfast routine to reduce my weight gain and coronary artery disease risk.

Sleep • General: I want to sleep better.

• SMART: - I will turn off my smart devices one hour before my 11pm bedtime and instead read a book for the next month to improve sleep quality.

- I will avoid alcohol at least four hours before, and tea and coffee at least 3 to 7 hours before going to bed.

Mental Wellbeing • General: I want to feel less stressed and enjoy life more.

• SMART: - I will practice mindfulness meditation using an app for 10 minutes every weekday morning for the next 30 days to reduce anxiety - I will stay connected with my social contacts and make regular time to see them once a month on Friday nights, to develop and maintain strong relationships with family and friends.

- I will dust off my guitar and practice 10min a day so I can play some chords in my favourite songs in the next three months.

Hydration • General: I should drink more water.

• SMART: - I will drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily (a cup is 250mL) for the next three months to stay hydrated and improve energy levels, by carrying my reusable water bottle to work and replenish it every hour after drinking.

- I will reduce my alcohol consumption to only weekends, and no more than two standard drinks per day to improve my overall health, reduce my cancer risk, to save money and to lose weight.

Habit Change • General: I want to quit smoking (or vaping).

• SMART: - I will use nicotine patches for x weeks to gradually reduce my cigarette intake and quit; if by that time, I have not achieved my target, I will see my doctor for other ways to help.

Goal achievements and habit changes are challenging. On average it takes about two months to develop a new habit (but can be longer depending on the person or the habit) but they can be done and are worth it. Be positive – replace self talk of ‘I can’t’, with ‘I can try.’ Break your goal into small easy tasks and set regular reminders for each step. Regularly review your goals and progress. Seeing progress boosts motivation and also improves self-esteem. Find family and friends to support your journey or seek professional advice if needed. Don’t let your 2026 goals become 2027 goals on repeat. Good luck – you can do it!

RNSH seeks women for bone health study

Have your say in Australia’s biggest community heat survey

Researchers from Royal North Shore Hospital are inviting women aged 50-80 to join a study to assess the effectiveness of combining exercise with medication for better bone and muscle health in postmenopausal women.

Sweltering Cities has called on people around the country to share their lived experience of rising temperatures and dangerous heatwaves driven by climate change, by participating in Australia’s largest community survey on heat, health and homes.

'We know that exercise has benefits for bone and muscle health, and there are effective treatments available to strengthen bones,' said researcher Dr Shejil Kumar.

Summer Survey 2026 collects qualitative and quantitative data on how people manage extreme heat; from cost-of-living pressures, to health impacts, to the local solutions communities want to see.

It will remain open until the end of February 2026, with results informing a major national report to be released in March.

'However, what we don’t know is whether combining exercise plus medication at the same time can lead to even greater improvements in bone and muscle health than treating with either alone.'

The study will utilise a medication which is registered and approved in Australia and has been shown to increase bone density and reduce fracture risk in large international studies.

Participants will be randomly assigned to different treatment groups, including a supervised group class focusing on weightbearing exercises and a home-based exercise program concentrating on mobility and balance.

'We believe this combination will be more effective and could dramatically change the way we treat and prevent osteoporosis going forward,' Dr Kumar said.

The study team have so far recruited 65 women into the study and are aiming to reach a target of 75 women by April 2026.

‘The 2024 survey showed that people are leaving their homes to cool down in shopping centres, skipping meals to manage energy bills, and experiencing significant health impacts during heatwaves. We expect 2026 to reveal even more pressure as temperatures continue to rise and energy costs remain high.’

Sweltering Cities says the survey helps identify priority areas for action, including investments in heat-safe housing, ambitious climate action, better community cooling options, public health planning, and support for vulnerable groups such as older people, renters, people with disability, and those living in urban heat island suburbs.

offers a welcoming space for young people in distress Young people across Northern Sydney who are experiencing emotional distress can access free, immediate support through the Safe Haven service at North Ryde.

The Safe Haven, operated by Northern Sydney Local Health District, provides a calm and welcoming environment for young people aged 12 to 17 who may be experiencing mental health challenges, distress or suicidal thoughts.

For young people who are unable to attend a Safe Haven in person, additional support is available through the Youth Response Team. The team provides crisis support via phone calls, text messages and home visits, and operates daily from 2pm to 10pm.

ART AND WELLBEING

The art of being well How creativity shapes presence, meaning and connection WORDS AZADEH NASIRLOO

The relationship between art and wellbeing is often misunderstood as therapeutic or corrective, as if art exists to fix what is broken. In reality, art is not a treatment, and wellbeing is not a condition to be achieved. Their connection lies elsewhere: in how humans experience meaning, presence and continuity in life.

Art also operates on a collective level. It connects personal experience to broader human narratives. When an individual encounters art, they are reminded that their experiences are not isolated. Others have felt uncertainty, loss, joy or longing before.

This sense of continuity strengthens wellbeing by situating the individual within a larger human story.

Art does not aim to heal in a clinical sense. It does not diagnose, prescribe or resolve. Instead, art creates a space in which human experience can be held without being simplified. This space allows emotions, thoughts, memories and contradictions to coexist. In doing so, art supports wellbeing by resisting fragmentation. It allows a person to remain whole even when life is complex, uncertain or unresolved.

Importantly, art does not replace medical or psychological care, nor does it compete with it. Its value lies in its non-instrumental nature. Art does not demand improvement or productivity. It allows stillness, ambiguity and even failure. In a world that often measures worth through efficiency and outcomes, art protects spaces where being is enough.

Wellbeing, in this context, is not happiness or comfort. It is the capacity to stay connected to oneself and to the world without denial or collapse. Art contributes to this capacity through attention. Whether creating or engaging with art, the individual is invited into a focused relationship with time, form and sensation.

This attention slows habitual reactions and makes room for reflection. The body, mind and emotions align around a shared act of perception.

Art also provides structure without control. A painting, a performance, a piece of music or a written text has form, rhythm and boundaries. These elements do not dictate meaning, but they hold experience safely. This is significant for wellbeing because human experience often exceeds the bounds of language or logic. Art allows expression without forcing clarity. It gives shape to what is felt but not yet understood, supporting a sense of coherence rather than resolution.

Another essential aspect of the connection between art and wellbeing is recognition. Through art, individuals see their internal states reflected externally. This reflection does not judge or correct; it acknowledges. Being seen - by oneself or by others supports dignity and belonging. This is particularly important in contexts of displacement, change or cultural transition, where identity may feel unstable. Art becomes a bridge between inner life and shared reality.

In this way, the connection between art and wellbeing is quiet but fundamental. Art supports the conditions in which wellbeing can exist: presence, coherence, connection and meaning. It does not cure, but it sustains. It does not solve, but it accompanies.

Through art, individuals and communities can remain engaged with life as it is - complex, unfinished, and deeply human.

When an individual encounters art, they are reminded that their experiences are not isolated.

The February issue of The Village Observer is featuring Wellbeing and so I think it is a great opportunity to show you my journalling go to... The Feel Good NOW Journal.

It feels like everywhere I look I am being shown how beneficial journalling is for us. It is regularly touted as being helpful in reducing stress, helping with anxiety, boosting self-awareness and improving memory... it seems to me every successful person has a full journal behind them! It’s not something I have ever done with regularity before, beyond my ‘dear diary’ 14-year-old scribblings, but I absolutely want to be the most ‘well’ version of me so in the last little while I have been giving journalling a go.

Of course, I found the blank page so overwhelming, I must have looked at every guided journal out there... haha I am sure it’s really personal, but for me I love the one created by Belinda Alexandra and Kelly Morton. I love the pink cover! I love that it is a 90-day journal (less overwhelming than a 12 month one for me!) I love the goal setting exercises, the check-ins, the habit tracker, and sweet affirmations. For me this one seems to be working. I am loathe to say it will for you too (that sounds so salesy!!) but I am really enjoying my time with The Feel Good NOW Journal.

It is regularly touted as being helpful in reducing stress, helping with anxiety, boosting self-awareness and improving memory.

2026 is going to be a fantastic year of reading, there’s already a new Maggie O’Farrell novel in the works and Emily St John Mandel!!! I am also so looking forward to The Society of Literary Marauders by Sasha Wasley, the sophomore novel by Laura McCluskey The Cursed Road… and cannot wait to read Katie Hoskins’ debut When the Party’s Over. There’s so much to be excited for… happy February friends, may your month be all booked!

Next morning, in the emergency was a man with a torn earlobe. After suturing the tear, I asked what happened. He only grinned. A nurse murmured, ‘Doctor, he must have drunk well with a fool’s bribe, and while happily in bed with his wife, earned this love bite.’

Realisation struck, was I the fool who funded his night. People here bite in fights; but in affection too?

Eram Atique, Ryde My interest in cryptic crosswords started when I was too down with quick crosswords.

Puzzlingly, I enjoy the challenge of not knowing which word is the ‘Definition’. It could be placed obviously at the start, or at the end of the puzzle.

However ‘Wordplay’ is the hardest to learn because of charades, homophones and reversals. Hidden words from half words, or finding a KISS ‘in the middle of MIXED’.

Words like juggle, broken, confused or disorganised are clues for anagrams. I count the letters to decide which single word to unscramble, or sometimes ‘two words’ can be SWORD OWT (3,5).

The joy of singing together

By Sarah de Jong, Musical Director and founder of LaVoce Lane Cove Community Choir Joy to the world is a carol many will have heard recently, but you should also know that singing in a group can bring joy to your world.

Singing together helps to develop a powerful sense of social cohesion by increasing our personal connections, as well as improving our health and getting the chance to safely express our feelings. Studies show that groups of strangers who sing together for an hour are able to forge unusually close bonds.

Singing activates a broad network of neurons on both sides of the brain, causing regions that deal with language, movement and emotion to light up. When combined with the focus on breathing in order to sing effectively, singing also becomes a stress reliever, while releasing endorphins – the brain’s ‘feel good’ chemicals, which can produce a euphoric state.

Rehearsals can become a chance to forget all the daily cares and worries, so you get the necessary time out and a chance to simply be in the moment.

While possibly shy and self-conscious in your private life, singing in a group allows you to be more extroverted and to express your emotions without any kind of public exposure.

It is wonderful to sing with 30 or more people, you really feel that your body is your instrument, and that this group of people has a common purpose.

Singing in a choir reconnects people to a structure that’s similar to society itself. You have to give your own voice, make sure it’s not dominating those around you, conform to the rhythm of the song and the group, and find your own unique voice.

In a community choir no one ever sings alone. You come because you want to sing and to create music. As a bonus you make new friends and have a good time singing for your pleasure, while within the safety of singing in a group of like-minded people.

Remember the green bans?

Lane Cove Historical Society

In Sydney in the early 1970s the leader of the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) trade union inspired his members to down tools if they were called upon by their employers to destroy heritage sites, parklands or other environmental assets in the name of development. His name was Jack Mundey and the union actions were called ‘green bans’. Over a short period of about four years, dozens of such bans were placed on threatened sites in Sydney and elsewhere. Green bans saved The Rocks and Woolloomooloo from massive high-rise developments, and a proposal for an Olympics stadium and pool in Centennial Park was placed under a ban which eventually saw the project deflected to its present site in the west.

When his union was de-registered in 1974, Mundey went on to positions on the Sydney City Council, the Australian Conservation Foundation, and the NSW Historic Houses Trust. Mundey and the green bans became famous worldwide, and his reputation earned him numerous accolades including three honorary higher degrees at The University of Sydney, UNSW and Western Sydney University.

The answer is simple.

The world’s first Green Ban took place at Kelly’s Bush in Hunters Hill.

The story starts back in the late 1960s with a high-density residential development proposal by A.V. Jennings for this 2.5-hectare piece of beautiful harbourside bushland at Woolwich. Initially, Hunters Hill Council and the State government were supportive. But when a very determined group of Hunters Hill women formed ‘The Battlers for Kelly’s Bush’ and called on Mundey’s trade union for help, a green ban was placed and the project was eventually shelved. The developers walked away without laying a single brick, and years later the Wran government bought the site for a public park- right here in our own neighbourhood.

If you are lucky you can find the·site by heading down Woolwich Road, turning off·at Gladstone Avenue and walking across Weil Park to the entrance to The Bush. It’s well worth a visit! Tracks lead down to the harbour and there are Aboriginal sites, a picnic spot, stretches of open grassland, and the only sizeable piece of pristine bushland remaining on the Parramatta River.

Lane Cove and Hunters Hill folk can surely be proud of Kelly’s Bush.

Glimpses of Another World: Anecdotes from a Life in Africa

BACKGROUND Many assume that the Kenya settler lived in the lap of luxury.

This was far from the case. Our cottage was typical of many in the district.

The cottage, built from stone cut on the farm, was less than modest. Facing the Oleolondo River, it consisted of a main room, flanked by two small bedrooms, shaded by a verandah and with a rusty old, corrugated iron roof. An outside third bedroom was built for my brother and me, after my two sisters were born; cement was in short supply, so mud was used for mortar.

The back three rooms consisted of an untidy office and a tiny bathroom, which was also a passage to the pantry.

As one can see it is a stone cottage The cottage roof, which leaked in half a dozen places, was corrugated iron and the ceilings were wheat sacks painted over with whitewash. As with most settlers, we had a cook, a male house servant and a gardener, so the decrepit little house looked out on to a beautiful garden surrounded by a honeysuckle hedge.

The kitchen, up a few steps at the back of the house, was a small separate shack built of stone rubble. It was presided over by a Kikuyu cook, who produced wonderful meals on an old, brokendown wood stove. The toilet was a long-drop a hundred yards or

so behind the house. During the seventeen years spent on the farm there was no electricity, no refrigeration and no telephone and initially until a borehole was constructed, water had to be collected in drums from the nearby Oleolondo river. Lighting was with paraffin pressure lamps or Dietz oil lamps. There was one cold water tap in the bathroom, the only one in the house. Hot water came from a Kenya boiler: an oil drum built into a stone and concrete structure and heated with a wood fire, and the house servant delivered this to the bath in four-gallon paraffin tins when required.

The bath was a 44-gallon drum cut down the middle with the ends cut out and then welded together - it looked like a boat with two blunt ends. It was kept from rolling over with a length of plank which one had to make certain was up against the bath.

Thirty of the 35 families living and working on the farm were Kikuyu. Dad was a natural linguist having been brough up on an Anglican mission In Zululand - his first language was Zulu. He also spoke fluent Kikuyu, which was unusual for a settler; most just relied on Swahili, the lingua franca of the Colony. African languages are primarily oral languages since none of them had ever been written down prior to white settlement, so I’m sure he never wrote a word of either Zulu Kikuyu or Swahili.

A MESSAGE FROM BRANKA IVKOVIC, CEO As we step into a new year, I am reminded of the incredible strength that comes from unity and the compassion that defines our community. Over the festive season, the Tree of Joy initiative beautifully demonstrated the power of community and generosity when people from all walks of life work together with a shared purpose: to make someone’s celebrations less stressful and more joyful.

From corporate volunteers and patrons of local clubs to council employees, Rotary members, local shopkeepers, parents, students, teachers, parishioners, and countless individuals who simply decided to give, your generosity was overwhelming.

Each gift placed under the Tree of Joy was more than a present; it was a symbol of hope and solidarity. In a time when cost-of-living pressures weigh heavily on many households, these acts of kindness remind us that the power of community can truly alleviate hardship.

This is what a compassionate civil society looks like, neighbours supporting neighbours, strangers becoming friends through shared action, and a network of care that strengthens us all. When we mobilise together, we create ripples of change that go far beyond the holiday season.

Community spirit doesn’t stop at gift-giving. It extends to the way we care for our environment and the people who call it home. Our gardening volunteers play a vital role in keeping gardens safe and beautiful for seniors who rely on these spaces for wellbeing and connection to nature. During recent heatwaves, this work became even more challenging.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Lane Cove Fun Run, we were able to purchase light cotton protective uniforms for our volunteers - ensuring they can continue their work safely and comfortably.

The benefits go far beyond exercise; access to green spaces is proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and combat feelings of isolation. For many older adults, a garden is not just a place to be active in; it’s a sanctuary that nurtures mental wellbeing, offering peace, sensory stimulation, and a sense of connection to nature.

A study by Macquarie University, found that increasing tree canopy in urban areas can reduce local land surface temperatures by up to 6 °C, with every 10% increase in canopy cover lowering surface temperature by more than 1 °C. This reinforces why our gardening program matters; not only for beauty and biodiversity but also for creating cooler, safer outdoor spaces for seniors during heatwaves.

As the new year begins, there’s a familiar sense of renewal across our community. The summer break brings with it a welcome pause, a chance to rest, reconnect with family and friends, and enjoy the slower days that only January can offer. Now, as many locals return to work and routines begin to re establish themselves, it’s the perfect time to look ahead with optimism and set the tone for the months to come.

City of Ryde’s annual Lunar New Year Festival is taking place on Saturday 28 February 2026 celebrating the Year of the Horse and I’m inviting everyone to come and join in the fun.

Held in the heart of Eastwood between 12.00pm and 9.00pm, the festival will feature amusement rides, market stalls, food trucks, cultural performances, fireworks and an incredible lion high pole performance.

The beginning of the year often feels like a clean slate.

Workplaces come back to life as colleagues reunite, new projects are planned, and goals begin taking shape. It’s a time to re energise, refocus, and support one another as we transition from holiday mode to the steady rhythm of everyday life. Many local cafés, small businesses, and service providers never take their foot off the gas and only shut for the big days of Christmas and New Years.

This year’s festival is undergoing an exciting expansion, as we activate Koreatown along Railway Parade from 12.00pm5.00pm. This expansion is proudly supported by the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program, led by Transport for NSW. Eastwood Oval will then come to life from 4.00pm-9.00pm.

For families, the start of the new year also signals the countdown to the start of the school term, especially those starting Kindy and year 7. Preparing for the return to school can be both exciting and demanding. Uniforms are too small now, books and pencil cases are missing in drawers, and children begin adjusting themselves for the busy weeks ahead. Local retailers such as Officeworks, Kmart, Big W, and our independent newsagents are well stocked with school supplies, offering everything from notebooks and pens to backpacks and technology basics. Many schools also provide second hand uniform options or P&C run uniform pools, which are cost effective and sustainable choices for families.

For those who may be feeling the financial strain that often comes with the back to school season, several community organisations are ready to assist. Groups such as Sydney Community Services, The Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul can offer support or connect families with programs providing stationery packs, vouchers, or general guidance during this busy period. Our community thrives when everyone is supported, and these services help ensure that every child starts the year with the tools they need.

Throughout the year, my Lane Cove Electorate office remains an important point of contact for constituents seeking help with state level matters. We can liaise with relevant Ministers on your behalf and support your concerns, issues involving roads, transport, planning, development, and infrastructure. Support is also available for matters related to Revenue NSW, such as fines and fees.

For residents navigating social and community housing challenges the Electorate office can assist when needed.

We also have a couple of JPs in house more often than not, so Justice of the Peace (JP) services are available for witnessing documents and statutory declarations.

As we embrace the year ahead, may it bring positivity, progress, and a strong sense of connection for all. Here’s to a smooth and successful start to the year.

Lunar New Year has always been an important occasion for many members of our Asian community – but over the years it has become a much-loved celebration for everyone in the City of Ryde to enjoy, regardless of background.

Youth Summit

I am delighted to announce that I will be hosting Council’s inaugural Ryde Mayor’s Youth Summit on Thursday 23 April 2026 at Macquarie University.

The Mayor’s Youth Summit will bring together young people aged 12–24, community leaders, stakeholders and elected representatives to explore what matters most to young people in Ryde. This initiative reflects Council’s strong commitment to youth participation, civic engagement and inclusive decisionmaking.

The event will be preceded by Bootcamps in March 2026, one for high school students and another for young adults aged 18-24 years, giving young people the opportunity to share their lived experiences, identify key issues impacting them and contribute ideas that will directly inform the summit discussions.

Registrations for the Bootcamp and Mayor’s Youth Summit will be sent directly to local high schools and for young adults, published on our website. This is a remarkable opportunity for a vital part of our growing community to engage directly with key decision-makers.

Environmental anniversary

I am honoured to be attending the 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society on 15 February 2026 at Field of Mars Reserve.

The Society - which was formed in 1966 to successfully advocate that Field of Mars be developed into a flora and fauna sanctuary - has become one of our area’s most important and impactful environmental groups.

It’s a milestone that is well-worth recognising.

As we begin a new year, the focus must firmly be on delivery for locals. Local families and residents want action, not excuses from the state government, and that will guide my priorities in 2026.

The cost of living remains the single biggest pressure facing households across Willoughby and right around NSW. From housing costs to everyday essentials, too many people are feeling stretched. Holding the Minns Government to account on these pressures will be a central task this year, particularly where poor policy choices are making things worse rather than better.

One of the defining features of our local area is the scale of growth now underway. Development is accelerating across Chatswood, Crows Nest and surrounding suburbs. Growth in itself is not the problem, but it must be matched with the infrastructure needed to support it. That means schools, green space and roads delivered at the same pace as new housing. All of our local public high schools are now at capacity, and advocating for new and expanded school facilities will be a major priority for me this year. Green space and road investment must also keep up, so our suburbs remain liveable as they grow.

I also start the year with updated responsibilities in the Shadow Ministry. I will continue as Shadow Minister for Fair Trading, Work Health and Safety and Building. In these roles, I will keep holding the government to account for its failures for renters, including sky-high rents and halffinished promises like the rental bond scheme that has been stuck in limbo. At the same time, the building sector is clearly not in a position to meet the state’s ambitious housing targets, and ensuring the industry is fit to build the homes of the future must be prioritised.

I have also taken on the Local Government portfolio.

Strong local government matters. Councils should be empowered to make local decisions, be responsive to their communities and deliver effective, reliable services focused on the areas they are responsible for. I look forward to working constructively with councils across NSW to lift performance and accountability.

Finally, I now have the honour of advocating for our veterans community. Our veterans have served our country with distinction, and the state has a role to play in ensuring they are properly supported.

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful break and are feeling refreshed and rejuvenated for the new year.

Our Council began the year by celebrating some of our outstanding residents with our annual Citizen of the Year Awards, which were announced at a ceremony on Australia Day. It was wonderful to see so many deserving locals being recognised, each with an impressive record of achievements for our community. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to our winners: • Rod Stewart, Citizen of the Year • Kellie Gallagher, Young Citizen of the Year • Elle Smith, Outstanding Sporting Achievement • Friends of Boronia Park, Environmental Excellence • 1st Boronia Scouts, Community Excellence It was also a pleasure to preside over the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony and to receive pledges from 32 members of our community in their final step to becoming Australian Citizens. I wish our newest citizens a safe, happy and prosperous life in Australia.

The new year also kicked off with many exciting projects.

Notably, the construction of the new Paul Manton Pavilion at Gladesville Reserve and the Figtree Playground and Amenities Block, which are both set to be completed in the first half of the year. These upgrades will enhance our local facilities and provide fantastic spaces for everyone to enjoy.

During our October 2025 meeting, Council also resolved to implement a new food organics recycling service which will be collected weekly in the green lidded bin.

The new service will be introduced in July 2026. This initiative helps divert organic waste from landfill, turning it into compost that benefits our communities.

With every NSW council required to implement a service by July 2030, our Council is excited to jump on board early so we can start working towards organics recovery.

We look forward to delivering these exciting projects for the Hunters Hill community.
