We couldn’t have been more chuffed when we learnt that Trent Zimmerman MP had made an address in Federal Parliament to recognise the 25th birthday of The Village Observer.

It was an unexpected honour, and this milestone in TVO’s history is now recorded in Hansard for posterity.

We wrapped up TVO’s month of birthday celebrations with a function attended by advertisers, contributors, readers, Board members, past and present staff in what was a great opportunity to thank the many people who help bring this magazine together.

In the true spirit of Lane Cove, our community has organised a number of initiatives to help support our country cousins as they battle the droughts that are plaguing parts of NSW. From a gold coin donation through to joining an afternoon tea to support Drought Angels, we’re hoping that everyone can help out in some way. Turn to page 6 for more information.

Results of the Community Wellbeing Survey undertaken in 2017 provide an interesting snapshot about how people in our community live, work and play.

SUPPORT OUR FARMERS Lane Cove and Gunnedah have had a formal ‘Sister City’ relationship since 2002, with the two regions developing their ties through reciprocal visits and communication.

Mayor Pam Palmer recently met with the Mayor of Gunnedah to discuss the best ways that Lane Cove could support its Sister City through the drought. The main concern is providing farmers with stock feed which is both scarce and expensive.

In the Cove is working with local schools, churches, Lane Cove Rotary, Lane Cove Golf Club, Tambourine Bay Scouts, local dance schools and pre-schools, with efforts being focused during the week of 2nd – 8th September.

The ‘Gold for Gunnedah’ initiative encourages everyone in Lane Cove to donate a $2 gold coin. Gunnedah will disperse money raised to provide assistance and relief to Gunnedah farmers and residents impacted by the drought.

Lane Cove businesses are offering to have collection points.

DROUGHT FUNDRAISER AFTERNOON TEA An Afternoon Tea for Drought Relief is being held at St Michael’s Primary School from 2-5pm on Saturday 8th September.

All money raised will go to Drought Angels, which supports Aussie farmers and their rural communities through food hampers, care packs, local store vouchers, stock feed and hay.

There will be raffles, auctions, tea, coffee and nibbles.

THOUSANDS RAISED FOR CHARITY This year’s Monster Garage Sale sale was another huge success, with almost $15,000 raised for Caritas and Youth off the Streets.

The team of volunteers from St Michael's Parish Lane Cove would like to thank the local community who came and supported them by donating and buying goods, with hundreds of secondhand items being successfully recycled and all proceeds going to worthwhile charities.

Amanda Bracks SOULFUL FITNESS

AMANDA IS THE FORCE BEHIND SOULFUL FITNESS, AN AWARD-WINNING SPECIALIST YOGA AND PILATES STUDIO LOCATED IN THE VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTRE PRECINCT IN LANE COVE.

Why did you start Soulful Fitness?

I was having a coffee in the Plaza one afternoon looking at everyone come and go when I realised that there was no fitness brand that existed locally offering low impact exercise that wasn’t mentally stressful. I could see a massive market for this business, so set about finding a space to set up a new studio.

I wanted to create a space for people in the community to come and work on their strength, stamina or just stretch - whatever is most important to them at that moment, especially catering for people who don’t see themselves as ‘gym goers’.

What makes Soulful Fitness different?

Whereas traditional gyms can be quite impersonal, we have created a small boutique community here that is about physical as well as mental wellness. We provide a non-intimidating, non-gym feel. Our Yoga and Pilates classes are specialised and suit people who are looking to create balance in their lives. We want our clients to discover and connect with their inner child.

How would you describe the current business environment?

It’s not easy in Lane Cove, especially because of the current parking situation. We have clients who haven’t been able to find a park, so keep on driving. However, I’m optimistic that this situation will improve when the Rosenthal carpark opens.

I’m very aware about how difficult it is for local businesses here at the moment, so always support them wherever I can.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

With over 20 year’s experience in the fitness industry, Amanda has written three books; has managed and developed fitness, leisure, personal training and yoga businesses; and lectured at conferences in both Australia and overseas.

Amanda helped create BlueFit at the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre in 2007, working as its General Manager. Following this she worked as a business consultant, and then National Marketing Manager of Vision Personal Training. Amanda opened Soulful Fitness in 2015.

What attracted you to Lane Cove?

I’m very embedded in this community, so it was a logical place for setting up my business. I grew up in East Ryde, but we always visited Lane Cove and my Dad also grew up here.

I love building and inspiring not only my team, but also my clients. We cry a lot here, particularly when we hear how we have helped our clients through difficult situations.

Growth and development of my team is really important to me and I enrol them in courses so that they can constantly improve themselves.

What’s one thing people wouldn’t know about you?

I’m getting married on the weekend. I set an intention to meet someone a couple of years ago, and I met back with the boy I had a crush on when I was 11 years old.

He has two sons and I have a daughter - we make a great family!

How can we support people seeking asylum?

Asylum seekers are among the most vulnerable members of our community. Just like us, they have dreams and aspirations for themselves and their children’s futures.

Against all odds, they have managed to escape war and persecution in their homeland and find safety here in Australia.

However, while they are living in the Australian community they can face years of living in limbo waiting for their claims to be processed with limited access to any resources or support services during this time.

Until now, there has been a basic safety net with Status Resolution Support Services providing counselling, subsidised medications and a living allowance of $35 a day for those unable to find secure employment. Recent changes mean that for the majority of people, they will now lose access to all case work, income support and access to subsidised medications. This will affect up to 3,500 people in NSW, including pregnant women and families with children.

Local communities across NSW are rallying together to see what they can do to support people affected by the loss of income support and other services.

A local forum will provide information, an opportunity to hear from people helping others with employment, accommodation, mentoring and friendship, and the means to discuss how we can come together to protect the dignity of all peoples in our community. TOM GLEESON THINKS WE’RE STILL BORING Burns Bay Bookery has designed new tea towels that celebrate all things Lane Cove.

Bowling at the Diddy, homework in the library and dinner at the Longy have been listed as some typical Lane Cove experiences. It also includes #notboring in response to comedian Tom Gleeson’s declaration that Lane Cove was Sydney’s most boring suburb.

Beatle and Karen at Burns Bay Bookery went so far as to organise for Tom to receive a free tea towel.

His response, at a subsequent comedy show, was that Lane Cove had presented him with a tea towel – apparently further evidence that we’re ‘still boring’.

The term “Never look a gift horse in the mouth” springs to mind…

RESIDENTS PROTEST ABOUT TREE REMOVAL Council received a petition with 102 signatures protesting against the removal of three Weeping Figs located on the nature strip in Kingslangley Road, Greenwich.

The petition was received after the removal of one tree was complete. Council staff contacted the head petitioner and explained the circumstances for the removal of the trees and informed them that Council had already considered all options for retention of the trees. The trees have since been removed.

Council said that they were very reluctant to remove the trees and the decision was not taken lightly, however it had come to the point where they had no option.

According to Council, the trees had caused considerable damage to infrastructure over the last 10 years including trip hazards, structural damage to walls and paving, and extensive plumbing issues that required constant repair.

The three trees will be replaced with six advanced Turpentine trees that will be up to 4m in height at the time of planting.

At its September meeting Council resolved that in future, 28 days prior to the removal of any street tree, a notice (including the reason for removal) be placed on the tree.

Trial traffic island proposed for Karilla Residents of Karilla Avenue, Parklands Avenue, Kyong Street and Landers Road continue to raise safety concerns about the intersections of Karilla Avenue and Centennial Avenue.

Council has committed to consulting with residents to see if they support trailing a temporary traffic island at the intersection of Karilla Avenue and Centennial Avenue.

The island, which would be trialled for a period of 6 or 12 months, would prevent vehicles exiting Karilla Avenue from turning right into Centennial Avenue to then drive in a northbound direction; and to stop southbound traveling vehicles from turning left into Karilla Avenue. It would still allow access to the school bus route provided by Sydney Buses.

A NEW NAME FOR ROSENTHAL PROJECT Over 250 names were suggested by the community for a permanent name for the Rosenthal Project. A shortlist has since been developed, and Council will now undertake further community consultation to decide on the most suitable name.

A popular suggestion was Cameraygal Park, but this name has already been allocated for a new park at 71 Longueville Road (currently the carpark attached to the Aristocrat building). This site will be converted into a park once the Rosenthal development has been completed.

THE SIX SHORTLISTED NAMES INCLUDE: Gamarada Grounds. Gamarada means ‘friendship’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language.

When paired together with 'grounds' it becomes the ‘Friendship Grounds.’

Lane Cove Commons. A timeless name that reflects a common place that will be shared amongst the community.

Nanganura Common. Nanga Nura means ‘Resting Place’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language. This provides a sense of coming together to rest and relax in the space.

Sky Gallery: Lane Cove. This name alludes to an outdoor space that can be both relaxing and engaging.

The Canopy: Lane Cove. Lane Cove is synonymous with local bushland and this gives the sense of being above the underground car park and Rosenthal Avenue.

Whiteley Muse. Reflective of one of Australia’s most famous painters who grew up in Lane Cove, this name plays homage to the strength of local art while implying that the space can continue to inspire the community.

A 6-week community consultation will enable feedback and help inform Council’s decision on the final name before the end of 2018.

Tech Sesh for Seniors Did you know that students from St Ignatius’ College Riverview host free one-on-one tutoring sessions at Lane Cove Library? This inter-generational activity is an enjoyable and relaxed way for Seniors to ask questions and get the personalised assistance needed to make better use of their phones, ipads or other devices.

Participants are offered a minimum of four tutoring sessions which take place on Friday afternoons during school term from 4.15 – 5.00pm.

Waste management SINCE JULY 2017, A MINIMUM OF 40% OF LANE COVE’S RESIDENTIAL GARBAGE WASTE HAS BEEN PROCESSED INTO COMPOST, RATHER THAN GOING INTO LANDFILL. This waste is being processed at the Veolia Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility at the Woodlawn eco-precinct near Goulburn, with the compost material being used to rehabilitate the former Woodlawn mine site.

QUICK STATS: • F or the month of July 2018, Lane Cove achieved a diversion rate of 64%, with 242 tonnes of waste being processed. Through strategies and waste recycling education programs, Council are working towards a 70% diversion rate by 2022.

• D uring July 2018, 382 tonnes of recyclable containers, paper and cardboard, metals and green waste were also diverted from landfill.

• F rom January to May 2018, 1040 local residents used the free recycling facility located in Artarmon to safely dispose of problem waste such as paints and electronic goods.

The event was an opportunity to thank TVO’s many supporters who have assisted to grow the publication in the past quarter of a century. Advertisers, contributors and supporters joined current and past staff of The Village Observer, Board members of the Lane Cove Community Aid Foundation and staff of Sydney Community Services.

Founder Ian Longbottom spoke about starting the magazine back in 1993, recounting some humorous anecdotes about his time spent running the magazine over a 17-year period. Landing in Australia in the heat of February, Kasia says that it felt like an alien planet. They were given accommodation at the Villawood Migrant Hostel (now the Villawood Detention Centre), which became their home for one year.

It was here that they learnt to speak English, connecting with refugees from countries around the world, including a large Polish community.

Having moved 18 times by the time she was 18, the frequent changes shaped Kasia’s view on how you live your life.

Drawing much of her inspiration from her Polish background, Kasia teaches the lost (and quickly re-emerging) art of embroidery, endeavouring to bridge the gap between a student’s conviction that they can't make something and the item that they’d like to create.

When someone books into a class, Kasia likens it to giving yourself a permission slip to be creative. Many times she has heard students say that taking time out from their everyday life can be seen as an indulgence.

“In today’s world, satisfaction and completeness seems to be about keeping busy all the time and ticking things off a list.

“Now more than ever our lives are so pushed into the digital space. You need to disconnect from that in order to reconnect with yourself.”

Kasia is not only an embroidery artist, but also a designer and teacher. In order to inspire others and make embroidery more accessible, she has created a range of embroidery kits, with florals and symmetrical patterns reflective of her Polish background.

Kasia lived in Poland until she was 10 years old. In 1981 she escaped with her mother to West Germany, before they both came to Australia in 1983 as refugees.

“So many times, my mother and I had to start again from scratch, so I grew not to get attached to things. I’m not overly sentimental and I don’t feel attached to anything apart from people. But I do feel connected to the things I embroider.

For example, a hand embroidered table runner creates a family table and creates a home.”

Her formative experiences influenced Kasia’s philosophy of “home is everywhere,” which she has been careful to instil in her own son and daughter.

“Wherever you are in the world, you should respect and take care of it, and reach out to people in and around it. Regardless of how long you stay somewhere, in that moment you make connections as if it were your home.”

Kasia started her own business ‘Laikonik’ in 2007. Inspired by her Polish heritage, she screenprinted her own fabrics using traditional Polish folk design and sold cushions, wall hangings and table runners online and at markets. After several years, she sold the business.

Later Kasia partnered with Jo at One Village, a store that was located in Central Arcade in Lane Cove that retailed ethically and sustainably produced homewares and clothing.

This was the start of a new creative journey for Kasia, as she started to offer embroidery classes from the store.

Although embroidery had been part of her life since she was a child, she didn’t

expect much interest and had never considered turning it into a business.

“From the very first lesson, people loved it. Teaching came naturally to me and I loved seeing how people became transformed when they saw what they can create and produce.”

Kasia explains that when you make something by hand, it has so much more value as you develop a personal relationship with the object.

Kasia now runs embroidery classes and workshops around Sydney, Newcastle and Melbourne and has been approached to start in Perth and Brisbane.

The Lane Cove community also gets to appreciate Kasia’s considerable talent through her public artwork, including two electricity boxes that she has painted on the corner of Epping Road and Centennial Avenue, plus two table tennis tables, one at Blackman Park and the other at Helen St Reserve.

Kasia’s love of teaching and her ability to create beauty through stitches is a treat for her students. As she readily shares her skills, it is helping to not only continue a craft passed down through many generations, but also the joy involved in creating beautiful objects.

My greatest joy is to see the satisfaction and inspiration on someone’s face when they discover they can make a beautiful thing with their own hands.

THE YOUNG AND RESTLESS One of the most common comments I hear from parents and grandparents is that it's so much harder for their children and grandchildren today.

But is it more difficult for this generation than it was in "our day"?

"Their degrees are so much harder these days. They have so much more competition for jobs. Property prices are so much higher." Really?

If you go back 40 years ago there were fewer jobs, there was no internet and more violence in the world. We had to hand write letters and post them, and it would take a week or two to arrive at their destination. We sent memos internally, letters externally and the big innovation was fax. Cars were unsafe and would regularly break down. More people drove when drunk and we didn't use seatbelts. We scavenged secondhand furniture from our parents.

It's no more difficult these days.

Students are more educated, but have more access to information. Knowing things is easy. Jobs are plentiful and varied. New industries are being created daily. We communicate extensively. It’s

not good or bad, just different.

Young people these days desire more than we did – that's not necessarily a bad thing.

It just is. They are also the first generation to teach the previous generations. Older people often feel slow and ignorant next to the young. Suddenly, “wisdom” is less valued. As a result, young adults are more confident, outspoken and verbalise their views. They are not prepared to put up with second-best, or wait. They are less likely to delay gratification — they can’t see why it is necessary.

I don’t know whether this is good or bad. In some respects, I admire their impatience and lack of concern for the future.

At the same time, our generation is a lot wealthier than our parents were at the same age. And we feel like we want to be better parents.

potentially lead to the opposite of what is intended. When either adult children ask for help or parents/grandparents offer it, it is driven by a desire for “happiness”.

But, by financially enabling the younger generation, we may remove their ability to survive and even thrive, and therefore their confidence. We may be encouraging impatience and feeding the desire for instant gratification.

In a study conducted by Tom Stanley and Bill Danko, two groups of young people were analysed. One group received a large capital sum as young adults and the other didn't. You would have thought that this would have made them a lot wealthier later in life – but that wasn’t the case. And most people will know exactly why.

Giving young adults large sums of capital can actually impair their ability to survive and thrive financially, and impact their levels of confidence and self-esteem.

Parents want their children to be happy, and it’s natural to want to help. The challenge is finding the most appropriate way to provide short-term help which has long-term benefits.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Before the Device It’s hard to believe but in August, smartphones turned 20. By Liz Foster.

The iPhone, launched as a ‘widescreen iPod, revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device’ is only eleven. (Even the language seems dated now are iPods even around these days?) Today, we carry a miniature computer around with us - something millions of times more powerful than NASA’s 1969 combined technology. All so we can check the weather and text funny pictures to our friends.

Convenience and instant access come at a cost though. At a Robbie Williams concert last year, we watched him serenade a teenager he’d pulled up on stage. They sat side-by-side, he crooning and watching her, she watching her phone as she filmed it all. The mainly Gen-X crowd laughed audibly, but she was too young to realise we were laughing at her, so she laughed too and carried on filming. She’d sacrificed being in the moment for the chance to save and share it over and over.

We don’t remember phone numbers any more. Growing up, I knew all my friends’ numbers by heart. Half my PINs today are part of my landline number when I was ten. When you did call your mates, you had to make conversation with their parents before being passed on. And there was one ring tone – the sound of a telephone ringing.

Everyone used their home phone, referred to simply as ‘the phone’. You never left the house without small change for that emergency call. But if you forgot your change, no problem, you could use a pre-arranged system of two rings / hang up. I’m ready to be picked up thanks Dad. Plans were made in advance and stuck to. Meet me at the Coke sign / outside the station / at the cafe at eight. No chance of flicking a quick text to say you couldn’t make it.

Shopping lists were made on scraps of paper, with no on the spot research into nutritional properties and allergen ingredients while browsing the aisles.

We learned our way around the city with the aid of a paper map book, adroitly flicking between pages 43 and 92 where our route mystifyingly continued. This was surely far more distracting than using Google maps, although at least there was no time delay.

All and sundry did not know your every move. I bumped into someone recently who commented on my fabulous trip to Mexico. Momentarily taken aback, I realised we were friends – on Facebook. I don’t post much but it felt weirdly intrusive just the same.

Perhaps ten years from now we’ll be using our smartphones to call our driverless cars to collect us. But I think it’s important to get back to basics. I’d be happy if I could get it to put out the bins and feed the dog.  16 TVO SEPTEMBER 2018

A debut novel by Scottish author Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is about loneliness and social isolation - but also about coping, about surviving, and the transformative power of human connections and kindness.

Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is an appealing character and her first-person narrative is an entertaining mix of naiveté and perception. One such example is her observation that “If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn't spoken to another person for two consecutive days.”

Highly intelligent but socially inexperienced, Eleanor makes clear observations about human behaviours but is unable to navigate the complexities of social codes. She passes the time, surviving by imposing a rigid routine on every aspect of her life.

Eleanor is frugal in her habits, antiquated in her speech, eats alone every night, and drinks two bottles of vodka to get through the weekend. Heartbreakingly lonely, Eleanor has no friends, no apparent family and believes that she is ‘fine’ this way. But life has other ideas and a sudden, inexplicable crush on a stranger, the arrival of a new work colleague and a chance meeting with an old man that needs her help, provide the catalysts for change in Eleanor’s life.

The pursuit of her ‘crush’ provokes her to consider her appearance and engage with beauty therapists, hair stylists and shop assistants with hilarious results. Her new friendships expose her to real, loving families and genuine, caring connections. These increasing interactions with the world force fractures in her habits and rituals and expose her to new experiences and emotions.

Eleanor’s loneliness is a result of the traumatic circumstances of her childhood. Her self-imposed isolation allows her to lock the secrets of her past deep inside herself as a means of self-protection. “Grief is the price we pay for love, so they say.

The price is far too high.” Her frank self-assessment and her gradual awakening are beautifully drawn by Honeyman with humour and depth. Eleanor’s gradual emergence from her self-imposed cocoon is heartrending but delightful and, most of all, hopeful.

Black belts for teenage girls Hunters Hill locals were recently greeted with the unusual sight of many teenage girls, mothers and children dressed in black from head to toe.

Volunteering for LCHS. It's good for you.

It's good for the community.

Lane Cove's rapid development over the past few years has presented challenging hurdles for community groups to keep up with demand for their services through volunteer membership.

One such group is the Lane Cove Historical Society, which is crying out for new members to participate in its initiatives and enjoy its benefits.

The LCHS has a double function within the community. Now, more than ever, we need to protect our collective local heritage in the face of a quickly changing urban landscape.

The Society has been the curator of Carisbrook from the time the Lane Cove Council purchased the property in 1969. Since then, the house has been transformed into a fascinating time-capsule of early Australian craftsmanship and middle-class suburban life in the 1880s.

The group were all heading to the Gladesville Road Community Centre for their annual test for the martial art of Jujitsu. The school, or ‘Dojo’, trains at the local community centre, offering classes for children from 3 years through to adult.

Despite the many nerves, all participants successfully passed the test, from 3-year old Aaliyah through to 50-year old mother of four, Maryanne.

What made the day particularly special was that six of the teenage girls attained their black belts. Each girl had to fight three attackers, disarming them, escaping and avoiding their attacks. Family members cheered as each girl bravely faced her test and passed with flying colours.

Mothers train free at the Hunters Hill Dojo, so it was also very special to watch six adult women, who had never trained in martial arts before, attain their first belts.

Considerable expertise has gone into its interiors and there is still plenty of scope for volunteers to use their particular skills in the running of the house. From antiques maintenance and acquisition (a job for born-shoppers); house-tour guiding; marketing, digital graphics and social media; or exhibition and child education projects, there are many opportunities for a satisfying, enjoyable and friendly volunteer experience.

For those who are time poor, volunteering may not be for you. But your support by subscribing $30.00 for the annual membership will go a long way to assisting the LCHS in its pursuits.

Members are entitled to unlimited access to Carisbrook.

Assistance with family history research is also offered, with access to LCHS resources and instruction on how to begin, or continue, the family story.

Audience members were also treated to demonstrations from many State and Australian champions who belong to the club, which is hidden away next to the cafes on Gladesville Road.

The bi-annual LCHS Journal is posted to members and emailed back-copies are available free. The first publication contains entries to the annual $2,000 local LCHS History Prize, and the second publishes original articles, research papers and reports of local historical and sociological interest.

The Dojo runs a successful tournament team and new members are always welcome. Many of the school girls who participate train at an elite level, using this to gain ATAR points for their HSC, or early entry into university.

As the Society is affiliated with the Royal Australian Historical Society, the RAHS monthly newsletter is emailed to all members, as well as the LCHS Noticeboard, covering current events and news of the Society.

Studying self-defence is one of the most empowering things a young girl or woman can do. Mastering their own fear, learning to control and use their body to defend and protect themselves, developing camaraderie with other classmates, and developing strength and fitness can totally change the way they feel about themselves.

The monthly 'Podium' meetings offer speakers with challenging subjects of historical interest. The LCHS also plans fun trips to historical sites, usually ending with a restaurant booking somewhere for everyone to mingle.

Mothers train free on Saturday mornings with their children, and there are adult classes for men and women starting on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm. Children's classes run Wednesdays 5.30 - 6.30pm.

Don lay sprawled across the inflatable mattress as the warm summer sun gently blanketed his slightly overweight body. Drifting further from the beach he felt no concern as his years on the swim team at college had given him a confidence well into his later years. His feet dangling in the cool ocean water, he glanced up at the perfectly blue sky above and sighed happily to himself.

“This is living,” he thought.

Just below, circling unseen by its impending target, the great white beast was thinking exactly the same thing. Very soon, only one of them would be correct.

We discovered the nest in a needlewood tree. A small platform of twigs and leaves built amongst the branches. Two tiny eggs lay precariously on the flat nest. Mother bird hovered close by.

"A topknot pigeon's nest!" my brother and I cried in excitement.

Each day after our discovery, we walked to the tree in our neighbour's paddock and quietly observed the mother nesting.

Rewarded weeks later, we gazed in wonder at two little fluffy pigeon chicks on the platform. "A girl and a boy" our Dad told us.

Suddenly Tess had no phone line. She felt completely disconnected. Contact with the outside world had been denied.

There was an immediate feeling of loss.

Tess liked to talk. She liked to engage in chatty dialogue. She also liked the landline phone. Yes, it was a bit oldfashioned, but she preferred it to the fiddly nature of a mobile.

Trying to get the landline fixed proved problematic. A large organisation beginning with the letter 'T' was very unhelpful. People kept telling vastly different stories. This became rather frustrating. Tess soon came to the conclusion that their information was rather phony.

As I open my eyes to a blinding sun shining straight through my cottage window, I reach my arms to the top of my bed and yawn with a deep breath in. I lay there for a while feeling tired and dreamy, thinking about the dream I just had.

I was in a wonderful land surrounded by nature and beauty, where fairies and mermaids were a reality. I rest my hands beside my body then sit up on the side of my warm, blue bed to peer through the window to see if my roses have grown any more.

Emma stepped gingerly through the dense grass, moving deeper into the woods. Her whiskers brushed past a blooming succulent and the fern canopy above her formed a magical archway to an enchanted garden. She knew the koi pond was near. She could smell the lotus flowers floating on its surface...now she could see her tortoise shell moon face reflected in the water, but she was lost and night had fallen.

“Psssst, here kitty” whispered a tiny, shimmering fairy. “Just follow the glow from my lantern”. Now she was home, purring in her wicker basket and dreaming of her next adventure.

He was well known in the neighbourhood. Good looking, selfassured, real cool and streetwise. He walked down the path to a sheltered part of the garden as if he owned it and disappeared from view.

Moments later his lady friend appeared, nervously looking around and obviously not comfortable in this unfamiliar territory. She too went down the path and disappeared.

So, what to do? Confront the trespassers for their audacious invasion of my privacy or allow them some time to get what happiness they could from their clandestine tryst?

Our neighbours are taking a 30-day holiday. “Would I mind feeding their chooks?” And so, at the age of 83, I am ‘Chook Boy of the Month.’

Every morning and evening I must scale the fence. Perched atop a dodgy milk crate, the world teeters. Plaintive cries come from the Hen House.

Onward to the chook run, I serve the girls a delicious breakfast of dried bread and talk to them in convoluted Chook English. My reward is three warm brown eggs nestled in the straw.

Back over the fence and boiled eggs for breakfast. 29 days to go – Eggactly.

Time is standing still, she thought.

Hands clasped, pale lips moving in silent prayer. "Please let Richard live.

The girl at the desk, immersed in her computer screen, unaware of Vivian's anxious glances.

The door opened. Vivian froze. The tall surgeon spoke kindly. "Your husband will be fine. Come in now."

Richard's wife stood up, composed.

"Thank you, Doctor." She followed through the door.

Vivian left, tears falling, a silent 'goodbye' to her lover.

Providing unwanted t-shirts with another lifespan reduces their environmental impact significantly, while also helping to reduce the usage of plastic bags.

What we do We upcycle unwanted t-shirts and singlets into reusable tote-bags, using only a pair of scissors, with the objectives of reducing clothing waste and providing an alternative to plastic bags.

Tees to Totes hold regular workshops and demos at markets and community centres to teach interested people the technique.

Additionally, we provide tote-bags to the public, either during markets or through the bag share depots.

A successful collaboration with the Women’s Creative Hub at the House of Welcome has led to several t-shirt bag workshops being held with refugees and women’s groups, with the bags then being provided for the public to use. The House of Welcome is an organisation committed to supporting refugees by engaging them in activities to enable integration into society. The workshops help provide refugees a sense of contribution towards a larger cause.

Lane Cove Rotary has had a busy three months. The power of Pilates Pilates is a wonderful hour to spend in and with your body.

A low impact form of exercise, it emphasizes proper postural alignment, hip strength, core strength, stability, muscle activation, balance and correction.

By comparison, Pilates Matwork is done with your own body weight on the mat.

The class focuses on strengthening and stabilizing abdominals, hips, inner thigh and glutes. These classes are great for anyone wanting better posture, strength and muscle activation.

Pilates versus Yoga?

Pilates and Yoga have similarities and differences.

Yoga has a more spiritual component to it, however Pilates requires mindfulness to activate the right muscles. Both are good for slowing the mind and reconnecting with self.

The Pilates breath is inhaled through the nose and out through the mouth to contract the correct muscles required for the exercise and to recruit the abdominals to build core strength. Yoga breath is generally inhaled through the nose and out through the nose to activate relaxation and slow the mind.

Yoga can have bigger broader movements, focused on balance, stretching and upper and lower body strength. Some of the stronger, faster yoga classes (such as Vinyasa) can burn calories, with quick movements between postures to help achieve cardiovascular fitness.

Both Yoga and Pilates are done bare foot - a great way to exercise. As they are low impact, they get results without injuries and setbacks. Doing a combination of both Yoga and Pilates maximises the benefits of both these therapeutic styles.

Pilates involves small controlled movements focused on activating certain muscles. Designed by German born fitness expert Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s, this technique has been getting bodies into shape for the past century.

It took off in Australia and around the world in the 1990’s as people wanting a gentler path to health and wellness started to seek it out.

In today’s society, we use more of our hip flexors but not enough glutes and abdominals. Equally we are spending time hunched forward on computers, tablets and phones, driving cars and writing.

We need to pay attention to the back of the shoulders and open up the tight pectoral muscles on our chest. These imbalances are common amongst most age groups and can lead to issues such as arthritis, disc bulges and bursitis.

Different body shapes have their own weaknesses, and Pilates allows the body to send signals to those muscles that we want to work, strengthening these areas. It also allows you to spend time 24 TVO SEPTEMBER 2018

connecting to your body instead of living outside it.

What is the difference between Pilates Reformer and Pilates Matwork?

Pilates Reformer is a class done on a bed that has a movable carriage, springs and straps. The exercises on this bed are effective for toning the entire body as well as the abdominals. People with muscle restrictions, injuries and who are pregnant can sometimes find the bed positions more comfortable than Pilates Matwork.

Reformer classes offer a more intense workout, as the springs can make the exercises challenging with strong eccentric movements. Equally you can reduce the spring strength for rehabilitation.

Does Pilates suit everyone?

All bodies and ages are suited to a Pilates program. Many professional athletes do Pilates to get equal strength in their muscles; mothers do Pilates to restore the pelvic and abdominal region after giving birth; Pilates helps correct posture and relieve stress and pain; men do Pilates to strengthen their core and relieve back pain; young dancers do Pilates to gain strength without bulking up, and we have even had a popular Australian actor building strength for a Hollywood movie being filmed at Fox Studios.

For everyone, Pilates helps maintain a healthy, strong body and mind; a healthy weight and the ability to carry out day-to-day activities pain free.

HIDDEN SUGARS Everybody knows that sugar is found in lollies, soft drinks, chocolate, biscuits and cakes. But it’s the less obvious items which are the most important to recognise because these are often consumed without knowledge of their effect on dental health, not to mention overall general health.

Recently I did a presentation at Lane Cove Public School for Dental Health Week. I chose to focus on the sugar content of common foods because in my daily practice, I see too many children presenting with tooth decay.

It appears the common thread is too much sugar in the diet, often hidden in foods that might not necessarily ring alarm bells.

It’s important to understand how tooth decay works. Oral bacteria like to stick together, forming clusters of a fluffy substance called plaque which sticks to teeth. When we brush and floss, we are attempting to remove this

bacterial plaque from the teeth. Any bacteria left behind feeds off sugar in our diet, producing a very strong acid by-product. It’s that acid which eats into our teeth. Saliva buffers the acid, but when the acid attack occurs too frequently throughout the day, the saliva doesn’t have enough time to neutralise it, and tooth decay results.

sugar – it actually contains more sugar than chocolate ice cream topping! The same applies for marinades often found surrounding meat and chicken from the butcher.

Fruit is an interesting subject. There is no doubt that fruit is healthy, but like anything, too much of a good thing can have poor consequences. Snacking on fruit too often throughout the day will invariably lead to tooth decay. Eating dried fruit is even worse. I call it nature’s candy. Juicing fruit is unnecessary and ultimately turns perfectly good fruit into sugary soft drink.

Great care needs to be taken in the shopping aisles, and it just comes down to reading labels. Better yet, the less unprocessed food we consume, the more our teeth and our health will thank us.

Breakfast cereals can also be a cause of great confusion. A good guide is to stick to products containing less than 1.5g sugar per 100g. Oats are great, and obviously contain no sugar at all. But take care not to add honey or syrup.

Vegetables on the other hand are generally extremely low in sugar, and can be consumed in limitless quantities as far as oral and general health is concerned. Nuts are also a fantastic snack, as is cheese and unsweetened yoghurt. There are plenty of possibilities - it’s just a matter of being prepared to change our habits.

Many savoury foods contain sugar.

Barbeque sauce is more than half

Plastic free for Ecodownunder ECODOWNUNDER HAS SUCCESSFULLY ELIMINATED THE LAST PLASTIC PACKAGING FROM ITS STORES. The retailer, which has always had a focus on sustainability, has a store in Lane Cove plus another 11 stores around Sydney.

Russell Lam is the founder of Ecodownunder, and he said they were delighted to have reached the point where they’ve been able to remove all plastic packaging.

“It’s been a challenge to be both eco-perfect and commercially viable and we’ve done everything we can to mimimise our footprint on the environment.

Removing plastic packaging was a transition we had to make to meet our own sustainability objectives.

“We have now introduced organic cotton shopping bags, which customers love and can use over and over.”

Removing the plastic packaging on products was more complex. After many discussions with suppliers, Ecodownunder has found different ways to pack their bedding without plastic, including specially made cotton bags and cotton ribbon.

With a focus on sustainability, Ecodownunder has always avoided the use of polyester, acrylic and microfleece. They also avoid the use of harsh chemicals in their production process.

I often hear arguments about natural sugars and to be frank, these confuse me. Table sugar is natural - it comes from sugar cane or sugar beets and nothing else. The rule of thumb is that as far as tooth decay is concerned, sugar is sugar.

Our teeth can’t tell the difference and our plaque doesn’t care. 

CHILDREN STUDYING POSTURES Children spend a large part of their day sitting at school, university and at home as they study. Most sit at desks, but others sit in bed and on the lounge. At times they will sit for many hours at a time. It is common to worry whether they are damaging themselves by the way they are sitting.

The good news is that most of them are not experiencing pain, despite the seemingly interesting postures they choose.

Recent studies have shown there is little evidence linking poor sitting posture to pain. What is more important is the ability to shift and change postures while sitting to prevent overload. Children typically wiggle and move, which is good.

Sustained, rigid postures in contrast can cause an overload of our muscles and joints.

The body’s defense factory

• Lymph nodes monitor the lymph flowing through them and react by producing cells and antibodies to protect against infection and disease.

• The spleen, thymus and even the tonsil glands are bigger factories and responders in the immune system.

They monitor our lymph as a blood product and react to infection and cancer cells circulating in the blood.

The lymphatic system is not only a ‘quiet achiever’, but also ‘quite an achiever’ in the body.

The third set of tubular fluid containing vessels in the body following the arteries and veins, the lymphatic system is connected, but has more roles than just transporting blood and nutrients.

So what is the lymphatic system?

Although part of the vascular (or blood vessel) system, the lymphatics are separate and form part of the immune system - that thin red line that protects us, bug wise, from a very hostile environment.

They are made up of a network of tiny vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph from the periphery of the body towards the heart. Lymph is filtered through the lymph glands and the spleen, and these are ever watchful for infective bugs, abnormal foreign material and cancer cells.

In early life, the thymus in the chest (sited above the heart) and the tonsils also play a part. Lymph vessels then join the subclavian veins near the heart, returning as part of the circulation.

The lymphatics are not a closed system.

Unlike the blood vessels, which have the heart as an inline pump in one closed system, they are an open system pumped along by muscle action.

Historically speaking…

There were many ancient anatomists who had interesting theories on the lymphatic system. Hippocrates mentioned it in the 5th Century BC. Rufus of Ephesus identified the thymus,

• Swelling of fluid, or ‘lymphoedema’ - especially in the arms and legs - develops if the drainage of fluid function is distorted or destroyed by surgery, radiotherapy, or other damage.

What glands are involved in the lymphatic system?

How does it work?

Wikipedia suggests we pump some 20 litres of blood through the capillary blood filtration system each day. From tiny arterioles to tiny venules, some 17 litres of filtered plasma and blood is removed, leaving around 3 litres of fluid between the cells which is pushed into the tissues.

The lymphatic system is responsible for clearing, filtering and recycling this watery fluid, along with all sorts of garbage along the way. Without it, we’d all blow up like roly poly poisoned pups.

Better Health Victoria lists the many actions of the lymphatic system: • The lymphatics are the tissue’s sewerage system, removing detritus and rubbish from the tissues of the body.

• It maintains fluid levels in our body by removing the fluid that leaks out of our blood vessels.

• It is important for the optimal functioning of our immune system.

You will have heard of the spleen and the tonsils, but maybe not of the thymus which sits above the heart in the chest and is large and very active in infants.

It decreases in size slowly through childhood and is mostly shrivelled up by early teenage. An interesting gland.

Now we’ve had a brief outline of the system, next month we’ll follow on with diseases of the lymphatics. 

Nature is wonderful and the body extraordinary.

surely takes the prize for animal cuteness. Though I’m not really sure I want a big tongue searching out my breakfast! Clearly others don’t share my squeamishness as this lodge is booked out months in advance by clients, like mine, who plan the rest of their trip around Giraffe Manor.

All creatures great and small

I’ve been fortunate to travel to Africa twice and will next year visit Botswana.

A highlight, apparently, is to glide along the waterways in a dugout canoe, spotting hippos barely visible but for their snouts. I think I’ll be too terrified to recline about in said mokoro given that a Taiwanese tourist, distracted by photography, recently lost his life to a hippo at Lake Navaisha in rare circumstances. And while I’d love to do a gorilla trek in Rwanda, at USD1500 per day per permit, I’m going to leave that conservation initiative to others. There are so many other options.

Anyone who knows me well will agree that domestic animal loving is not part of my genetic makeup.

Were it so, the dog on the bed would be more sincerely welcomed and the miaowing cat better tolerated. You could however, give me a fish which does not bark, growl, or whine and cannot bother me to be let out, walked or fed.

None of that is about to change markedly. I’m too old. But what I do adore are exotic animals. And yes, I even count domestic fauna among those.

We recently spent a weekend at Wolgan Valley – it was nine years since our last visit – and while there were few material changes around the resort, what was noticeable was the huge number of kangaroos lolling around the villas. It was quite a surprise to walk back from dinner and see a big fella grazing off our porch.

And while I always thought of wombats as nocturnal, we saw at least four out and about during daytime just doing their thing. It was wonderfully thrilling,

especially for the young children and tourists among the guests.

Then last week I went to an expedition cruising seminar. The video footage was spectacular showing polar bears, narwhal, arctic foxes, whales, penguins and more. Alaska, Antarctica and the Arctic are where people are keen to travel. Is it that the cost of such trips has dropped significantly as more ships provide more opportunities at more competitive pricing? Or is it a sense that global warming is changing all of these environments for the worse and we need to get in quickly to see them?

Africa is a constant bucket-list destination with a plethora of options to suit all budgets. Those beautiful camps that understandably demand higher tariffs are fabulous treats, however you can enjoy lesser priced accommodation along the same theme, particularly if you stay within South Africa. There we enjoy a favourable exchange rate against the South Africa Rand, whereas most other African countries price in USD. You can get good bang for your buck and South Africa is a wonderful family destination.

Lend only what you can afford to lose

LENDING MONEY Whilst lending money to family or friends is a common occurrence, it’s important that it’s done correctly.

Picture this scenario. A close relative or friend is going through a tough time financially or they’re starting a new business and they approach you to borrow money.

You’re not comfortable with the request but you feel awkward saying no, so you reluctantly hand over the cash, never to see it again. From that time on, you feel resentful and family get-togethers become painfully uncomfortable.

All too often we talk to clients who have lent money in such a vague and unstructured way that it makes it almost impossible to recover the money if the person doesn’t pay it back.

Here are our top tips to consider before opening up your wallet, so that you

Although your friend or family member may be trustworthy and reliable with the best intention to repay the money, things can happen that prevent them from paying you back. If they strike financial difficulties, it’s likely that they will focus only on repaying their bills, mortgage and credit card debts first.

Only give an amount that, if never repaid, doesn’t affect your own financial obligations, savings goals or other relationships.

Create a repayment schedule Loans to family and friends have a tendency to be open-ended. The lender doesn’t know when their money will be returned and the borrower doesn’t know when to repay the loan. Without a deadline, it may become the borrower’s lowest priority and it can be difficult for the lender to request repayment. If you create a clear timeline for repayment, there can also be no doubt that the money was intended as a gift. Unlike a gift, a loan must be repaid.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO GILLIAN BATT This week we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the foundation of The Village Observer. While listening to Ian Longbottom talking about how he was inspired to start The Village Observer, it occurred to me that this was just another example of people giving their time for the benefit of their community.

Ian spent an incredible amount of time creating this monthly newspaper, which he delivered to 20 thousand households. Here at Sydney Community Services, we have every single edition of TVO catalogued and bound by year.

Looking at them, I am amazed at how much time Ian must have spent putting the magazine together.

I often quote the fact that we have 400 volunteers helping us to deliver our services to the community. Whereas we might initially think of the volunteers who deliver meals on wheels or the drivers who transport people to appointments, there is also our Board members who give so much of their time often without proper appreciation of their commitment from the community.

Here at Sydney Community Services, we have ten Board members who attend monthly board meetings and sit on 28 TVO SEPTEMBER 2018

one of our three committees. That not only means many hours of meetings, but also preparation for the meetings and getting a real understanding of what the organisation does and what it means to the community.

Ian is not only one of our Board members, but he also heads our Foundation that owns The Village Observer and directly funds Sydney Community Services.

Our Chair, John Devine, has been on the Board for over 15 years and spends many hours giving me his advice and support.

Other Board members have been associated with the organisation for up to 20 years and many are also involved with organisations like Rotary, Pottery Gardens and Lane Cove Council.

Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services to became Sydney Community Services.

Leading up to that merger, four directors (two from each organisation) met nearly every week for six months to thrash out all the details of bringing the organisations together.

I’d like to publicly acknowledge the dedication of Peter Fay, Rod Cooke, Warren Bell and David Button for their time, patience and expertise.

In particular, David has spent many hours helping us to get the financial systems in line and to be rigorously efficient and effective. This week David decided that his work was done and that the organisation was finally in good enough shape for him to be able to leave us and concentrate on other parts of his life. As with all volunteers, in financial terms his contribution is enormous, but it doesn’t feature on the audited Balance Sheet.

LCPS NETBALL CLUB CELEBRATES 30 YEARS! Over 140 people came along to celebrate Lane Cove Public School (LCPS) Netball Club’s 30th birthday on Sunday 5th August. The event, held at Willoughby Netball Courts, was a wonderful afternoon filled with delicious food and coffee, face painting, jumping castle, raffles, games and fun.

Founded by Toni Field in 1988, LCPS Netball Club started with six teams and now has 20 teams. Toni attended the event, as did current LCPS Netball president Belinda Bernstein.

The afternoon was a wonderful tribute to the history of LCPS Netball with members from the past, present and future coming along to join the celebrations.

Some notable dignitaries also attended, including Trent Zimmerman, Member for North Sydney; Karola Brent, Deputy Mayor for Lane Cove Council; Terry McKinnon, Principal for Lane Cove Public School and Brendon Zhu, Councillor for Willoughby City Council.

Joining in the birthday celebrations were (top) current LCPS Netball Club President Belinda Bernstein, Gabby McGibbon and Alex Mead; with (bottom) Lucy Groundwater, Ben McGibbon and Harriet Baker.

The Club and its members are extremely proud of its long history as one of the oldest clubs in the association. LCPS Netball Club now fields NetSetGo, junior and senior teams in its weekend competitions. The large number of teams is a testament to the fact that netball is fun for everyone.

Gunnedah, in the Liverpool Plains of NSW, is Lane Cove’s Sister City.

It was during a severe drought in 2002 that the relationship was forged between the two Councils.

Lane Cove hosted a “Drought Breaker” concert at which Gunnedah youth provided the talent. Since then, the two regions have been developing their ties, through reciprocal visits and exchanges.

Now, once again, Gunnedah is in the grip of a severe drought, one that encompasses all of NSW. Gunnedah is particularly vulnerable at this time because it has both livestock and cropping. While livestock are without pasture at the moment, if rains do not arrive then crops cannot be planted.

I met recently with the Mayor of Gunnedah to see how Lane Cove could help our Sister City during the current drought.

Council has now pledged to support the people of Gunnedah starting with a grant of $5,000 towards drought relief in the region.

People and organisations in Lane Cove are also showing their generosity with a number of events organised for September. Council will be supporting such Lane Cove-based campaigns in practical ways in their efforts to raise funds.

The process relies on organic matter, such as food waste, to produce compost for environmental rehabilitation.

New Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park Council recently asked the community for their input into equipment and features of a new 3,000m2 fenced Dog Park area at Blackman Park.

Locals helping our farmers We may be a country of floods and droughts, but when Australians are doing it tough, we all look for ways that we can help.

Federally, the government is putting in place a range of measures under our Drought Assistance Package. The state government is matching those efforts with its own considerable support.

We can be proud that so many in our community have jumped to the cause. Many local schools have run ‘A fiver for a farmer’ fundraising drives and Rotary Clubs across NSW are supporting major fundraising efforts.

St Michael’s Primary School in Lane Cove is another great example of those community efforts.

A Droughts Angels fundraiser and afternoon tea will be held at St Michael’s School Hall on Saturday 8th September at 2pm.

There will be raffles, live auctions, special guest speakers and more. Tickets can be purchased via www.trybooking.com/XCVA. Congratulations and thank you to Roslyn Carberry and Sarah Martin for organising this event.

Federal grant for figtree playgroup It was wonderful to join the Figtree Playgroup, which is the proud recipient of $2500 under the Stronger Communities Programme, which it will use to purchase new shelving and equipment.

As many in the community will know, this is a volunteer run organisation that provides a community based playgroup including craft, unstructured playtime, story and music time. The playgroup counts families from Hunters Hill, Ryde, Gladesville, Drummoyne, Lane Cove and beyond as its members.

Hunters Hill SES annual presentation The Hunters Hill State Emergency Service Annual Presentation is always a great way to recognise the commitment and endeavours of those who volunteer to help protect our community from disasters and come to our aid in times of need.

There were plenty of awards for heroes in orange jackets who help us cover our roofs after storms, take down fallen trees and fight our fires. It was also pleasing to see awards given to those who go above and beyond in areas that keep the Hunter Hill SES unit running. Congratulations to Mark Allerton for being awarded the Donald Oil trophy; Marty Gullard and Gary Akehurst for being awarded the Local Controller’s Award; and those who received certificates of appreciation.

Our thriving local arts community If you were ever in doubt about the cultural richness of our area and the talents of local residents, two recent events would dispel any hesitation.

What an incredible display Lane Cove Council and the Lane Cove Art Society arranged as part of the Lane Cove Art Award. The exhibition of entrants was as diverse as it was impressive. I would not have wanted to be a judge!

Lane Cove is a friendly, tight-knit community which I am so proud to represent in the NSW Parliament.

That’s why I get so much pleasure in being able to provide government support for our wonderful community groups and organisations.

Funding for The Diddy Recently, I was proud to announce a $180,000 grant for The Diddy - also known as the Longueville Sporting Club - an institution in our community that has been around since 1938.

The funding will be used for the refurbishment and restoration of the club house. The 5000 members of The Diddy greatly deserve this, as well as the funding I have been able to secure for them in the past.

Upgrade to Kingsford Smith oval pavilion It also heartens me to be able to announce a $100,000 grant from the NSW Government to be used to upgrade the Pavilion building at Kingsford Smith Oval in Longueville.

The funding is part of the NSW Government’s Heritage Near Me Local Strategic Project, which will see conservation of the heritage listed pavilion and an upgrade to meet present day standards. This will improve accessibility of the facility to a broader cross section of the community and help conserve and share our local heritage, which is an important foundation of local communities.

Schools Tree Day I recently joined renowned horticulturist Graham Ross at St Michael’s Primary School in Lane Cove to celebrate Schools Tree Day with the students.

The aim of the visit was to inspire, educate and recruit citizens - including our younger ones - to actively care for our unique land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians.

This program which I instituted as Planning Minister will see five million trees planted in and around Sydney by 2030.

To meet the canopy target, we will plant over 380,000 trees every year for the next 12 years, which is equivalent to taking 355,000 cars off our roads each year.

The students also heard how planting more trees contributes to lowering urban heat in Sydney and improves the environment for pedestrians at street level. Shade from trees will reduce surrounding temperatures by up to 8 degrees, lowering the need for costly cooling of our houses and schools. It is also important for birds and native animals.

We planted several trees in the schoolyard, which play some small part in helping to make Sydney greener and healthier.

The students loved it, the teachers loved it and Graham Ross and I got great pleasure from the entire exercise.

And I know the kids went home and told their mums and dads and friends about how important it was to plant trees.

Moocooboola Festival Held in bright sunshine on Sunday 5th August, this year marked the Festival’s 39th anniversary. Part of the fabric of the Hunters Hill community, hundreds of people came to enjoy the latest in fun, hospitality and service and it had a fantastic atmosphere and an abundance of things to do and see.

Council was delighted to accept a cheque for $1 million from the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP for the upgrade of Boronia Park and ovals. The project is being developed by Council to address the need for accessible and inclusive amenities that meet the needs of all groups in the community. The announcement by Mr Roberts will allow Council to get the facilities that are needed for the park and provide a legacy for the future of the community.

Hunter’s Hill Day July 31st 2017 marked the day that the Court of Appeal handed down its judgement advising that the forced merger proposal regarding Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and the City of Ryde Councils was invalid.

This milestone date will never be forgotten in the history of the Municipality, as it brought to an end a long and arduous campaign to maintain the independence of our Council.

It was a battle about democracy; it was a battle about independence; and it was a battle we had to win!

Hunters Hill community ultimately maintained the right to determine its own future as all Councillors live in the area that their decisions impact. There is a clear onus on Councillors to act in the best interests of the community and to remain vigilant of future challenges to our independence.

The collaborative efforts of the Council and the community played a significant role in eventually encouraging the government to withdraw its merger proposals, notwithstanding that the Council’s legal appeal was also successful.

Viva le pact d’amitié On the evening of August 9th, I had the pleasant duty to farewell eight French students from the town of Le Vesinet.

The five girls and three boys spent six weeks in Australia under the care and guidance of host families and enjoyed many memorable occasions and tours of our beautiful country. It was a pleasure to hear from each as they provided an emotional talk on their experience and presented a humourous video of their combined visit.

The Committee is run by volunteers who do an exceptional job to provide the students with an experience of a lifetime.

Students from Le Vesinet come to Australia in July, with Australian students exchanging in December each year. If anyone is interested in this program, please contact Hunter’s Hill Council.

Gallery Lane Cove was filled with viewers and artists keen to see the tremendous variety of award-winning works at the opening of this year's 55th Lane Cove Art Award.

This year’s judges, Robin Ross and Gail Edmonds, chose the prize winners from over 200 entries with works coming from local and interstate artists.

The guest presenter for the July meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society, Ian Thomas finds the process of analysing his own creative marks an interesting exercise.

Indeed, as Ian shared the influences behind his marks, it became obvious that what appeared abstract mixed media works to the viewer were indeed a very personal journey.

Ian’s unique style has been influenced

by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), an American street graffiti artist who integrated text into much of his mark making. Ideas, words and quotes have always attracted Ian, which may be linked to his background in events management, fashion styling and communications.

What is the starting point for Ian’s art?

Google maps have often provided a creative impetus with a personal connection to a place determining its selection. Acrylic paint is then applied with a brush or an acrylic pen. The bower bird in Ian emerges as interesting collage items are incorporated. Found and made objects are used. Text seeps through the works. Often it has been made with an old typewriter or 36 TVO SEPTEMBER 2018

by stamping letters onto rice paper.

Binder is used to adhere it into the work.

Sometimes the bleeding of the ink or charcoal can embellish the mark.

What emerged throughout Ian’s presentation was just how profoundly visual he is. Nothing escapes his eye. For example, the graphics on a beer coaster from his favourite bar were shown, then arranged in a variety of ways.

Experimentation is so important in the making of art that is fresh, imaginative and capable of transporting the viewer to their own ‘mindscape’.

In another work, small pieces of marine ply were used, and marks and collage were built up on these postcard sized surfaces. These small artworks were then stuck side-by-side to make large works.

Ian at times has painted a bigger artwork over the top of these smaller works and then separated them. At art fairs, viewers get to select ‘individual’ pieces so that they are personalising their own art. Ian is passionate about the process but is happy for the final object to have a life of its own. One cannot help but think of Basquiat’s quote “I don’t think about art when I’m working. I think about life.”

It may have been Ian’s first presentation to an art society, but his strong visual capacity was a gift to all the artists in the audience.

The main prize of $2000 for Aspects of Lane Cove was won by well-known artist Noeline Millar for her excellent depiction of ‘Approaching Dusk - Yacht Bay’. This work has been acquired by Council for its permanent collection.

by Trevor Armitage for Traditional Oils or Acrylics, Janette Miller for Watercolours, Greg Morgan for Pastels or Drawings, Judy Smith for Artists' Prints and Julie Brown for Contemporary.

The Hyecorp Property Group Prize of $1500 was won by Sue Sharpe, the Baytree by Ardency Prize of $1250 was won by Dianne Stinson, and the Patron’s Prize of $500 was won by Sam Zonca.

Lane Cove Art Society members also received Highly Commended awards (Cilla Davis and Margaret Vickers) and Commended awards (Pat Wilson, Rosemary Jackson, Vicki Ratcliff and Steven Laki).

NEXT MEETING 24 SEPT Guest artist will be Sydney oil painter Laura Matthews. Laura received her formal education at the Slade School of Fine Art, UK. In her inner west studio, she focuses on interpreting the landscape of Australia. Her work references ancient mythologies and contemporary stories.

Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognises "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

STUDENT CONCERT SERIES INVITES PARTICIPANTS Music students from the local community are encouraged to be involved in the Lane Cove Music & Cultural Centre’s upcoming Student Concert Series.

WHEN: Sunday, 16th September WHERE: Terrace Function Room, lower ground floor, 1 Pottery Lane, Lane Cove COST:

Adults ($8) and pensioners ($5).

Participants free.

There will be two concerts available for students to perform.

The first concert will commence at 2.30pm, followed by the second concert at 4.00pm (each with approximately 20 students).

Performers should arrive 15 mins early for set up. Each performer will need to have a well-prepared piece to perform and must have informed their music teacher of their intention to participate.

LCMCC encourages all children and their parents to come along and watch students of similar age perform on a variety of instruments with the support of the beautiful grand piano in a warm and supportive environment.

LA VOCE TO PERFORM IN KENTHURST Local community choir LaVoce has been invited to participate in The Hills are Alive Choir Festival on Sunday 4th November 4th in the RJ Phipps auditorium at Hills Grammar School, Kenthurst Road, Kenthurst. They will join five other varied choirs who will each sing for 15 minutes followed by a grand finale of The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music.

n the lead up to Mental Health Month this October, we are looking for locals to make handcrafted birds that will pop-up around Lane Cove and beyond...

The birds can be made from any material eg.

Clay, wood, fabric, wool etc. You are welcome to make your own and drop them off at our collection points or join us at a workshop where materials are provided.

Each little bird wears a tag with a positive message and links to mental health support services. They will be popping up in the community in October – if you find one you can keep it; share it; or leave it for someone else to find.

I have recently returned from the Cook Islands feeling relaxed, refreshed and tanned. These small islands are surrounded by pristine, aqua waters and white sands lined by palm trees - an island paradise.

However, attempting to self-cater was a shock! Bread is cooked fresh daily, so be quick if you want some. Meat is scarce – just two packets of chicken in the local supermarket freezer. Even fish was elusive!

I do enjoy variety and we became quite creative with our egg dishes. But the restricted choice was also a part of our refreshment. Rarotonga has one main road that circumnavigates the island, so you’re going to get there either way. There is one telecommunications carrier to choose from – yes or no?

In contrast, we have an overabundance of options thrust upon us here. Whereas it is a privilege to be able to choose what we want, when and how, it is overwhelming when applied to every detail of our lives. Hugh Mackay’s latest book ‘Australia Reimagined. Towards a more compassionate, less anxious society’, emphasises the anxiety epidemic in Australia, resulting in the emergence of a powerful ‘Me culture’. This culture appears as ‘a heightened sense of personal entitlement and an exaggerated concern with personal comfort and personal appearance’ providing an ‘escape into our own comfort zone’ (p. 56) Are all the choices we make a desperate attempt to cover a deep fear that we actually lack control of our lives?

Belief in a benevolent, higher authority certainly helps here as we acknowledge the final authority is beyond us. Irrespective of whether we believe in God, living interdependently with others is enriching and can also help reduce anxiety when the big life issues arise. We are capable of helping each other, but like so much else in life, we must choose to do so. There’s no time like now!

We should make plans - counting on God to direct us.

You can make a big difference in someone’s life. With a team of nearly 400 volunteers, Sydney Community Services provides a range of services to support over 500 older residents and people living with a disability living in our local community.

We are currently looking for volunteers in the following areas: VOLUNTEER GARDENER: Join our morning gardening team and have fun working outdoors and helping in the community at the same time.

Please join us as Alan Seale presents the 1956 movie High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Grace Kelly plays Tracy, a spoiled rich girl who is about to marry a man she does not love. Her ex (Crosby) comes back to town under the guise of a jazz festival to secretly sabotage the wedding.

SCS MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVES NUTRITION AND INDEPENDENCE Sydney Community Services is one of 600 grassroots organisations nationally that have become forces of care in their community, nourishing local communities with Meals on Wheels.

About 4.5 million meals are received in NSW each year alone, helping people to stay independent at home. Sydney Community Services (SCS) and its volunteers drive almost 30,000 of these meals each year to grateful residents in Lane Cove and across the Ryde, Gladesville, Hunters Hill local government areas.

“You get more than a nutritious meal from Meals on Wheels,” said Sydney Community Services CEO, Gill Batt. “Our wonderful volunteers offer a chat and regular community connection. So they’re a visitor who helps ensure people are okay, which can be reassuring for clients and their families.”

The SCS Meals-on-Wheels service has been running since 1966 when, known as the Lane Cove Community Aid Service, its volunteers drove 65 meals a day to locals. The menu choice and quality has come a long way since ’66, but are still a bargain priced from $5 to $7.
