EDITOR'S NOTE After several years of uncertainty regarding Lane Cove Council’s future with the proposed merger, it’s now onward and forward as locals take to the polls to vote on who will represent their interests for the next four-year term.

The Local Government elections are set to take place on September 9th and Lane Cove has 35 candidates who have nominated for positions on Council. See page 4 for information on the candidates and our local polling places.

This month’s cover features a painting by local artist Pamela Irving. Entitled ‘3 Shades of Guy’, it is a tribute to well-known local artist Guy Warren. This work was the winner of the main prize at the recent Lane Cove Art Awards and has been acquired by Council for its permanent collection. Turn to page 34 for details of this and other winners.

of our community. On page 11 there is a story about two local boys who recently visited a small village school in Zimbabwe, taking with them over 50 pairs of boots that they collected from donations from Lane Cove Football Club and Newington College.

Another example was the level of support for the St Michael’s Parish Monster Garage Sale.

This year was the best yet, and over $14,000 was raised for charity. Turn to page 26 for the full story.

The Labor ticket for Central Ward will be led by David Roenfeldt.

David works as an Environmental Test Engineer and as a Roadside Assistance Mechanic. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) from RMIT. As Senior Vice President of Lane Cove Labor, David has played an integral part in driving several issue based campaigns.

His motivation for contesting the election was “In an age where the rich are getting richer, and the poorest are floundering I want to be able to make a difference in their lives. I want to see working people have a comfortable social circumstance that contributes to them feeling a sense of happiness.”

The second Labor candidate is Bronwyn Dean. Bronwyn’s background includes journalism, teaching and psychology.

Bronwyn has most recently worked in the non-for-profit and corporate space facilitating leadership programs.

Alex Perna is the third Labor candidate and was a candidate for Labor at the 2012 Lane Cove Council election. With a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, David has worked in the fast-moving consumer goods industry and more recently a recycling technology business.

West Ward: SCOTT BENNISON LIBERAL

I have been your local representative since 2008, serving as Mayor in 2012. I was born in Wellington NSW and moved to Lane Cove in 1996 with my wife Julia. In my professional capacity, I am a Chartered Accountant, Company Auditor, and Financial Planner and am an owner in a local financial services firm. In West Ward, we have upgraded sports fields and facilities, upgraded bush walks, provided new tennis/basketball courts and community centres.

DANIEL STRASSBERG INDEPENDENT

Daniel is a current Lane Cove West Councillor and has lived in Lane Cove for 18 years with his family, with children at local public schools. Daniel believes in strong community-focused leadership that represents residents’ concerns and not political parties or commercial interests.

On Daniel’s team is Deborah Hill and Lyn Du. Deborah is Treasurer of the Stringy Bark Creek Residents Association and President of the Lane Cove Chamber of Commerce. Deborah has lived in Lane Cove since 2005, where she operates

her own Chartered Accountancy firm. Deborah has worked with local businesses, community groups and government to advocate for Lane Cove.

Lyn is the President of the Linley Point Neighbourhood Committee, and she petitioned for the new bus services to connect Linley Point to the city via Victoria Road. Lyn has also arranged new BBQ and play equipment for the park, and community social events. Lyn and her family have lived in Lane Cove for 10 years.

ANDREW ZBIK LABOR

The Labor ticket for West Ward will be led by Andrew Zbik.

Andrew works as a Senior Financial Planner for a non-aligned wealth advisory group. He has been the President of Lane Cove Labor since 2010 and has led campaigns locally to have more buses assigned, stand up against changes to weaken racial discrimination laws and to develop policies to address the housing affordability issue in Australia.

“I believe any level of Government works best when there is a variety of ideas that are shared and considered. I hope that by running as a candidate for Council, I can present a progressive voice for the interests of local residents.” Andrew said.

The second Labor candidate is Lyn Nasir. Lyn works at the Federal Court of Australia as an Information and Records Manager. Lyn is passionate about the environment and has actively worked with the Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group to improve the environment of Lane Cove.

The third Labor candidate is Wayne Enright. Wayne works in an Arts Administration role in the performing arts sector. Wayne has a keen interest in environmental conservation and wishes to see the green leafy nature of our area preserved.

New open space for Mowbray precinct Council has reached agreement with the NSW Government to acquire six properties in Pinaroo Place, which will allow the expansion of the existing park at the corner of Kullah Parade and Mindarie Street to create a single large park of approximately 6,300sqm.

This additional open space will cater for the recreational needs of the increased population in the Mowbray precinct.

Council first commenced the process to acquire the sites from the NSW Land and Housing Corporation in 2013. Council received advice in August 2017 that the transaction can proceed.

The transaction involves a land exchange of (1,332sqm) of park area at Girraween Avenue for an additional area (4,055sqm) of land currently comprising the six single residences at Pinaroo Place.

These elements have been negotiated on the basis of like-for-like value and will be the subject of a Deed which allows Council to proceed with construction of the park under a lease arrangement whilst the various elements of the transaction occur.

A Planning Proposal will be lodged to rezone and reclassify the existing park on Girraween Avenue from RE1 Public Recreation to R4 High Density with a height limit of 5 storeys.

To partially offset the loss of the Girraween Avenue Pocket Park, it is proposed to create a new Pocket Park at 552 Mowbray Road (697sqm), with a Planning Proposal to rezone this site from R4 High Density to RE1 Public Recreation.

Draft designs have been prepared for both the Pinaroo Place and Mowbray Road parks.

Community consultation will commence on the designs before a tender process for construction is undertaken. Council will also be seeking name suggestions for the two parks.

The draft plan for the Pinaroo Place site includes a small field for ball games, a multicourt, half-court basketball court, and a bicycle / scooter pump track. Passive recreation is accommodated with picnic areas and play equipment. A small amenities building will also be provided for park users.

The draft design for the Pocket Park at 552 Mowbray Road includes the proposed relocation of play equipment from Girraween Reserve, together with seating and landscaping to provide a passive recreation space.

Restoration of Epping Road garden beds

Council will develop a strategy for restoring and maintaining the Epping Road garden beds. This follows a petition requesting that they be brought back to a similar standard that was present prior to the construction of the Lane Cove Tunnel.

Located between Centennial Avenue and Longueville Road, the garden beds formed a

local landmark with their Azalea mass planting and ‘LANE COVE’ floral signage.

Whilst the signature Azalea garden remains in the upper section of the garden bed, the area containing the floral signage has been significantly modified, precluding Council from reinstating the letters.

The existing azalea species in the upper beds have been there for decades and are now commercially unavailable. Council has started a program of taking cuttings with a view to replanting them.

It is proposed to investigate the possibility of providing a design which will best incorporate the historical plants but also provide a floral display over a longer period throughout the year.

I have served two terms on Council, including three years as Deputy Mayor.

I lead a great team for East Ward, all locals who already have many years of Lane Cove community service to recommend them.

My name is David Brooks-Horn and I am a local councillor, with nine years' experience as a Lane Cove Councillor and two of those as Mayor.

Professionally, I run a software development company; Lynne Spencer is an accountant and MBA graduate; Michael Armati is a landscape architect specialising in children’s playgrounds; and Liz Price is a retired lawyer.

I have lived in Lane Cove all my life, and am heavily invested in the local community. I am a Board Member on Sydney Community Services (formerly Lane Cove & North Side Community Services), Pottery Gardens and the Lane Cove Club, as well as a member of Rotary.

I also coordinate the annual Red Shield Door Knock appeal in Lane Cove.

Our interest is to shape the best outcomes for Lane Cove, without party politics. That means:

Rod served for 29 years on Lane Cove Council, and was Mayor from 1994 to 1996. He is also VicePresident of the Osborne Park Progress Association. Rod stands for preservation of the environment, controlling overdevelopment and sound financial planning and asset management.

Frances is a truly independent candidate with a track record of putting needs of the community and local environment first. She served as a Councillor from 1999 to 2004, and has strong leadership skills and experience.

There is no absentee voting in Local Government Elections (ie. out of area). However, there are a number of multi-ward polling places at which you can vote in any Ward. As the weather warms up, many people take the opportunity to give their home a much-needed spring clean.

LCFC brothers donate boots to Zimbabwean schoolchildren

Two Lane Cove Football Club players recently visited Zimbabwe, taking 50 pairs of football boots from fellow team members with them to donate.

Oscar Tentij (Year 7) and Finn Tentij (Year 10) went to Sizinda Secondary School, a small village school on the outskirts of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Once there they donated over 50 pairs of boots that they had collected from donations from LCFC and Newington College through a local charity called Their Beautiful Game.

Connected to Zimbabwe by a charity based in Texas called It Starts With Soccer, the brothers gave the boots to the Sizanda boys football team.

They had enough to give the entire team exact size boots, with enough left over to equip the girls team too.

“We thank you a lot for giving us the boots. We can use (the boots) often in school and we can leave the boots for the next generation that are coming through the school. We thank you a lot,” said Perfect Simbanda.

After this joyous event, Oscar and Finn enjoyed a game of football on the sand pitch just outside the school. With an Australian representative on each side, both of whom were tremendously outclassed by the local children, the score ended up at 1-1 (goal scorers were Experience Muchimba

You may be wondering the point behind giving boots, instead of money or food.

Doug Brown, the founder of It Starts With Soccer answered this question through an anecdote: “I met a girl… living in a tiny house who wakes up at 5 o’clock

every morning and walks several hours to school. When she gets back home, it’s dark and she needs to use a torch to study, and she can only do that when batteries are available. Soccer is her one escape.”

“It was a pleasure to go out there and to see so many smiling faces,” said Finn Tentij.

“It was a time we will never forget."

Perfectly imperfect…

Understanding perfectionism in young people and helping them overcome it.

Does your child worry excessively about their homework or assignments, feeling the need to get things ‘just right’?

Perhaps they spend much longer on a task than is really necessary, or find it difficult to get started at all? Even daily tasks such as getting dressed or packing a bag can become a major event. Whilst most parents want their children to be organised and do well at school, some children’s need for perfection can lead to stress, procrastination or paralysis. So what is it that drives perfectionism in young people and how can we help them let go of its menacing grip?

Perfectionism can be very alluring because it creates the feeling of being in control. When we feel that things are within our control, our world seems more manageable.

The downside is that despite one’s best efforts to do things perfectly, there is always a chance that we may not. Trying to get things right all the time is not only exhausting, it reinforces the belief that everything we do must be right all the time.

Children who worry a lot tend to overestimate the likelihood that something bad will happen if they don’t get it ‘right’. As a result, they may become anxious, immobilised or

spend far too long on tasks or situations where they feel the need to do a perfect job. Perfectionism in young people can also cause them to become overly fixated on small flaws in themselves and others, or to downgrade achievements.

It is important to help young people understand that mistakes and failures are a normal and inevitable part of life. Trying to get things right all the time will get in the way of getting things done.

Ask your child, “what’s the worst thing that will happen if you don’t get this right?” Talk openly about their answer, helping them desensitise to the possible negative outcomes such as getting in trouble from a teacher if they haven’t finished their homework. Though it may sound counter-intuitive, encourage your child to leave something unfinished, make a mess or make a deliberate mistake in their homework. Have fun with it.

They need to learn that their fear of severe consequences is normally unfounded,

that life goes on and the consequences they worry about usually aren’t that bad after all. Here are some statements to teach your child: ● Sometimes I make mistakes or do silly things but I’m still a good person. ● I don’t always have to get things right. ● It’s okay to make mistakes, everybody does and that’s how we learn. ● Just leave it now and see what happens. ● I have done my best and now it’s time to move on.

The high price of sugar A recent article published in the International Journal of Dental Research has drawn correlations between the amount of money spent on dental care and the rate of sugar consumption.

The results shouldn’t come as a surprise, as we all know the facts very well. Dental plaque, the bacteria found in the mouth around the teeth and gums, thrives on sugar. It multiplies rapidly, causing gum infection, and produces acid as a result of metabolising sugar, creating tooth decay.

The researchers evaluated data from 168 countries for the year 2010.

They analysed the rate of tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss and compared the results to the costs of dental treatment and sugar consumption. The good news is that they didn’t simply document household white sugar consumption, but also hidden sugars consumed in processed foods. These are often the most insidious of all. We expect sugar in soft drink, confectionary and ice cream, but we aren’t often

Sugar consumption to cost of dental treatment in Germany was 90-110gm sugar per person per day (22-28 teaspoons) and $281 US dollars per year in dental treatment.

Next were Switzerland, Denmark and the USA. The highest rates of sugarrelated dental disease were found in Mexico, Guatemala and Mauretania.

“If the target of 50gm of sugar per person per day set by the World Health

Organisation could be reached, this would result in savings in the cost of treatment within Germany of 150 Euros ($201 US dollars) per person per year.

“To be able to reduce the burden of nutrition-related illnesses, a balanced mix of educational work and food-policy initiatives, along with innovative technological solutions, are needed”, said a coauthor of the study.

In 2014, Mexico introduced a sugar tax to curb the problem.

Within the first year, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages had decreased by 5%, and by the end of the second year, that number had doubled to over 10%.

Keeping the cost of sugar down is as simple as avoiding it. A diet low in sugar and processed foods passes on more than just dental health benefits.

The most recent World Health Organisation recommendation is 25g of sugar per day, or 6 teaspoons.

Feeling sadness is a universal experience, but depression is a medical illness.

In some, depression is severe and disabling enough to be considered a mood disorder that can require help from trained professionals. In those with clinical depression, the low mood is sustained for long periods of time, sometimes without a known reason.

Other symptoms of clinical depression can include diminished interest in things that would normally bring joy (eg. spending time with friends or loved ones); sleep disturbance; change in appetite and weight; low energy levels; poor concentration; increased anxiety, and thoughts of death or suicide.

What causes depression? Although it is sometimes difficult to identify the cause of depression, it doesn’t make the depression any less debilitating. Factors that mean you could be more likely to develop depression include family history of mental illness; drug and alcohol use; medical illnesses (including chronic pain, stroke, heart disease); adverse life events (eg. abuse, divorce, unemployment); as well as other mental

health conditions, such as severe anxiety.

What treatments are available? Treatment for depression is widely available and often very effective.

As a first step, it is always useful to consider lifestyle factors, such as ensuring adequate sleep, regular physical activity, a healthy balanced diet and managing stress levels.

Beyond these, there are a range of effective treatments available for depression talking to your GP is a good way to start narrowing down which options will work best for you.

Psychological treatments are usually conducted one-on-one by a psychologist, psychiatrist or counsellor, though others may benefit from a group setting or online programs.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (or CBT) is an established psychological treatment for depression. Established medical treatments include antidepressant medication

that may be prescribed by GP’s, psychiatrists or other medical practitioners. Many antidepressants recalibrate levels of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, and there are well over a dozen different antidepressants that are commonly prescribed in the treatment of depression.

What is the role of family and friends? The role of family and friends can be pivotal in a person’s recovery. They can offer support, understanding and encouragement, not only at the start but throughout the recovery process. This is especially important as the natural inclination for the depressed person will often be to isolate themselves. A support person may be able to help with problem solving, medication compliance, symptom monitoring and by also helping the depressed person obtain the help they need.

What is male pattern baldness?

It’s a worry for many men and it runs in families, with about 60% of men having significant hair loss by age 50.

Professor John Murtagh, my favourite reference, says that about 100 hairs are shed from the scalp daily. The pattern develops as a bald patch on the crown along with a receding frontal hairline.

Many men these days choose to shave their scalp to look good. Girls, just love your man through it.

What can I do?

Going bald is a genetic lottery and basically, it’s incurable. Toupees and hair transplants work for some. Shampoos and ointments generally do not help, despite claims to the contrary. Two prescribable medications - Minoxidil and Finasteride may help and are definitely worth having a go via your doctor. These are pricey and require lifelong treatment if seen to help.

Should I be concerned about lumps in the scrotum?

Testicular cancer is at the top of the list of concerns. A painless lump has to be investigated, particularly in a man under 50. Sometimes there is a loss of sensation, a heavy feeling or an ache, but not usually so in cancer.

A Hydrocele is a soft swelling that can get very large. It is a build-up of clear sterile fluid, sometimes after an injury but usually not. Little boys and older men are more prone to hydrocele. The fluid can be drained via a needle, or for a permanent solution, surgery may be required.

A Varicocele is caused by a clump of extra veins in the scrotum. Usually on the left side, it is harmless but may cause

some pain or a dragging feeling. Symptomatic varicoceles can be removed surgically.

What should I do?

A testicular ultrasound via your GP will define the problem. Regular examination in the shower is recommended for all men.

Most lumps are harmless and easily treatable.

What other health issues should I be aware of?

Foreskin hygiene is important to prevent infection and inflammation.

Babies and young boys do not need foreskin care.

Once a boy can retract his foreskin - usually by age 6 or 7 - he should be taught the following, as should all uncircumcised males.

Failure to do so will end up with smelliness, soreness and possibly more such as infection and penile cancer.

Simply retract the foreskin to expose the head of the penis.

Wash well with soap and water in the shower.

Dry the area well and replace the foreskin.

Do this at least weekly.

Impotence is a hidden and very embarrassing problem for many men.

The stats are that 3 in 10 males at age 45, and 2 in 3 males at age 70, have this problem. Many men find it difficult to talk about, but will find sympathetic information and advice from their doctor.

There are multiple possible underlying physical causes including alcohol excess,

diabetes, some medications, ageing, and reduced testosterone hormone production to mention a few.

Psychological causes include stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression (and some of the drugs used to treat these), marital disharmony, and sometimes simple ignorance, amongst others. The process of impotence treatment is multi-dimensional and requires a sensitive discussion and investigation by your doctor or specialist.

Vasectomy is an option some men take for contraception and one often encouraged by their wives. It is the most common method of sterilisation in men. In this procedure, the vas deferens, the tubes that conduct sperm from the testicle to the storage sacs (called seminal vesicles), are cut and tied off.

It is successful with a 1 in 500 failure rate. Men DO NOT lose their virility as a result of vasectomy.

The prostate is a male organ that can give lots of trouble.

Prostatitis is an infection of the prostate. It can be persistent and recurrent. It requires prolonged treatment with antibiotics along with prostate massage.

Prostatism is prostate enlargement, thus squeezing the outlet tube from the bladder and causing reduced urine flow. Very treatable.

The demise of the queue Shopping, as we know it, is about to altered for good. By Liz Foster.

Amazon Go is about to launch in Melbourne and as a market disrupter, it can't be overestimated.

Of course, we've already lived through multiple incarnations of retail change. Online shopping, for one, and self-serve checkouts. Today it's commonplace to order everything online, from your groceries, to clothes, homewares and more.

Been searching high and low for those purple stilettos with the pink bows? Try visiting Shoes of Prey, a site where you can tailor and order your own shoes down to every part, including heel height, width, material, colour, lining and sole.

Desperate for that pair of pizza slice earrings? The Mouse Market offers hand sculpted dollhouse-sized miniature food crafted from polymer clay into tiny but perfect jewellery.

But back to Amazon, which was in fact one of the first online shopping sites to launch, way back in 1995 - practically eons ago in digital terms.

Building on the success of their online retail environment, Amazon Go is a bricks-and-mortar store. The difference is that you never have to wait in line. You simply swipe in via your app, fill up your basket and walk back out. No lines, no checkouts, no registers. Computer cleverness has been 'weaved into the very fabric of the store' via algorithms and so on, that register your items and charge your credit card accordingly.

Me, I'm not sure I'll be keen to routinely do my shopping there (although I'm looking forward to experimenting with putting things in and out of my basket in a rather juvenile way). The temptation for impulse purchases is bad enough online, but cashless transactions will make it ridiculously easy to overspend.

The worst part of it all though is the sad demise of the queue.

Queueing is practically a national sport here, whether it's to catch the bus home or to buy gelato in the middle of winter. It gives us something to do when there's time on our hands.

This new retail concept means no more mad rush to checkout 3 which has just opened; no more letting someone with one item go in front of your full trolley. No more general chat with the cashier - is it still raining outside, would you like a receipt, have a nice day. No need, in fact, to talk to anyone.

But I suppose at least it gets you out of the house, which is more than online shopping does - progress for sure.

Lane Cove hosts sustainability conference Well-known food and sustainability speakers will be presenting at the 33rd NSW Environmental Education Conference.

Hosted by the Lane Cove Hunters Hill Green Schools Network, the event will be held at St Ignatius' College in Riverview from 27-29th September.

The conference will bring together NSW environmental educators from government and community to reflect on their practice so that they can “make change happen”.

Make the Change is a framework developed by the Australian Association of Environmental Education NSW, in partnership with NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, to provide a unified approach to sustainability education and engagement across NSW. Keynote speakers will include Costa Georgiadis, AAEE NSW Patron and host of Gardening Australia; Joshua Gilbert, a Worimi Man, Australian Geographic's 2016 Young Conservationist of the Year and Green Globes Award winner; Professor Dennis Foley, a Gadigal Man, Board Member and Consultant with the NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce; Patrick Shirvington, artist/ illustrator and bushland manager; and Build Bangladesh, a local impact investment platform to take Bangladesh forward socially, economically and environmentally.

At the Crop Swap event, locals can swap garden goodies, learn about bees and hear amazing speaker Oliver Brown talk about ‘foraging, food swapping and hunting – a ‘survivor’s’ year in Sydney’.

Oliver spent one year avoiding the supermarket and eating only what he could grow in his backyard, hunt for himself or barter. He lost 15 kilos in the process and now has a deep appreciation for where food comes from.

Bush Tucker Everything you want to know about planting and cooking. BY LYRA VILLAFANA According to Narelle Happ, a trained horticulturalist, permaculture designer and wellknown educator on bush tucker, many people don’t realise that native plants can be used in all parts of their cooking.

“I think people don't know a lot about Indigenous foods,” she says. “They think it's still quite a novelty.”

Narelle aims to entice locals with newfound knowledge at a special educational session at the Lane Cove’s FoodFaith community garden in Hughes Park on Friday September 29th.

A well-known educator on bush tucker, and chief horticulturist at A Garden for Life, Narelle’s workshops and presentations in preschools, schools and community groups are always popular.

The little known Indigenous plant, Lemon Aspen, for example, bears a tart fruit that can be dried and used in a similar way to citric acid or where lemon flavours are needed.

Lemon Myrtle, a beautiful shrub that grows in the coastal regions of northern NSW and southern Queensland, is a versatile herb that adds a citrus flavour to fish and dessert recipes. The leaves can also be infused in boiling water to make a highly aromatic tea.

The seeds of the ubiquitous wattle are likewise an all-round kitchen ingredient that can be used to season meat, thicken sauces and lend a nutty coffee-like taste

to cakes and desserts. Not all wattle species, however, have edible seeds.

Warrigal Greens, one of the first Australian native plants to be cultivated by the European settlers, is great for making pesto. It is typically found in coastal areas but can also flourish in the Brigalow Belt.

Narelle travels around Australia running educational sessions and advising homeowners on garden designs.

The workshops provide information on where to obtain plants and she shows attendees how to identify edible species as well as how to grow, harvest and cook the plants.

Gillian Duggin attended a recent workshop and said she was surprised to learn that it is actually possible to grow native plants for food on a balcony.

“I live in an apartment so I don’t have that much space. I always assumed the plants wouldn’t thrive, but Narelle has told me that they will do pretty well.”

5 BUSH TUCKER PLANTS SUITABLE FOR SYDNEY GARDENS Most native plants are easy to grow because they are well suited to the local climate. Narelle says that these plants do well in Sydney:

1. Midyim Berries (Austromyrtus dulcius). Plant them in the sun or shade.

These small growing edible berries will thrive either way.

2. Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora).

Who would have thought that this large tree could also be grown in a pot?

3. Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia

tetragonioides). Nothing beats a plant that grows under any conditions.

4. Muntries (Kunzea pomifera). This small shrub bears sweet berries in summer.

5. Finger Lime (Citrus australasica). This has a delicious flavour that goes well with fish and desserts.

TIPS FOR GROWING BUSH TUCKER IN A SMALL SPACE Did you know that you can grow bush food plants even if you live in an apartment?

Narelle says you can produce a whole food forest on your balcony and that growing native plants in pots is actually very simple. Here are the key points for cultivating a thriving garden in a small space: 1. Work out your balcony’s aspect.

Some plants need plenty of sunlight while others prefer the shade. A lot of native bush foods love the shade which is great for balcony gardens that don't get full sun.

2. Use high quality native soil and potting mix in the pots.

3. Mulch the top of the pots. Keeping the soil well drained and mulching the plants are a must in our variable climate.

4. Consider the wind. You may have to create a wind-break and put some plants behind it if you live in a windy area.

No – tarnished bronze, an object too big to be a coin, nestled in fabric that may have once been black velvet.

A piece of paper had enshrouded it; only crumbling fragments now, falling from my touch; the writing illegible. It was a memorial, buried when nothing else remained – a private ceremonial gesture of grief and loss. It was a Dead Man’s Penny.

He stopped in the middle of flipping nowhere, got out of the jam-packedfor-holiday’s car, and jumped the barbed-wire fence.

“Where are you going Dad?!” the 15-year-old yelled, but was left with his long strides and determined nose heading across the desert to a ‘pile of rocks’ in the distance. The car with its doors flung wide would have to wait as she ran to catch up to him.

The song cast; invitation accepted, a great privilege was waiting. In cathedral-like hush they were spellbound to witness ancient stories from the First People painted in ochre.

In yesterday's rain, just like a solitary cloud, I wandered. An anonymous entity amidst the faceless crowds; as I attempted futilely to dodge the sea of black umbrellas that pursued my every step.

In yesterday's softly-falling rain, with eyes shut and face up to the liquid skies; I beheld your image; radiant; floating up in the air.

And, on the gentle moisture-laden wind, there came the whisper of your name.

Last night, after yesterday's falling rain, I slept and dreamt a dream in which the great, blind Italian tenor was singing his entire repertoire of love songs... just for you!

Les hung up. His back was out, and now this. That Bar was a mystery to him and seemed to attract a real motley crew.

He drove his Volvo, taking no chances. Having no expectation of finding a park, he pulled up illegally and peered inside the Bar. Then, a roar “Happy Birthday Les!”, his family cheered.

His son Tim hugged him. “Happy 80th Dad. Told you I’d get you here one day! Fancy a Piccolo?”

Cultivating hope for another turn despite her tenth round of IVF. She swiftly downs her syrupy, black espresso. Done.

She weaves her way around the village green one more time, but the sign still shouts ‘Do Not Enter’.

The sun’s rays prod me in the back towards the water, promising relief. I am bewildered by the waves smashing across the soft shoreline, their power to pulverise. Body immersed they slap hard, as if to break me in half. Move forward; I need more time. A running charge at my torso and I’m breathless.

But I lunge and dive into its arched back and propel onward. You will not conquer me, fierce old man of the sea. I am out of my depth now, but it’s a cool calm. The worst is behind me. I float and look skyward.

At the pool I noticed three girls cavorting and diving at the deep end.

Two left, leaving one who continued to disappear. Then it struck me. She'd been below for at least a minute. I ran, dived and splashed to where she had been.

As she surfaced beside me, I put my left arm around her, swimming sidestroke as a lifesaver. Yet surprisingly, she began swimming with both arms.

We emerged at the shallow end and I said "I just had to save you." "Oh no," she responded, "I knew you were an old guy needing help. I saved you."

Closing my eyes, I listened to Manjit's instruction, "I want you to travel back to the time before you were born and tell me what you see".

Sceptical at first, I now found myself hurtling through space, my physical body gone, flying through the pitch blackness...suddenly, a door opens. I'm in a magnificent rose garden, dressed in Tudor finery.

As he approaches me I curtsy "your majesty". He takes hold of my hand. I remember him like yesterday.

BOOMers started as a joint initiative between us and Lane Cove Council and now we also get a small amount of funding from Department of Health. It’s a program set up to support older men to get out and about and make new friends and to try and break down any barriers of isolation that may come as age increases.

Many of our men have been widowed and in many cases their wives were the social secretary. It is all too easy for people to lose touch with old friends and in turn become lonely and cut off.

Our program is a simple concept. Go out on a morning bus trip somewhere interesting, have a nice cup of coffee and a cake and sit down and have a chat.

From connections made in the group have come lunches, other morning teas and attendance at other community activities. One of the most popular is the Men’s Kitchen (another collaboration between us and Lane Cove Council), where a group of men meet every fortnight, cook a three-course meal together and sit down for lunch and a chat over a glass of wine.

One of the most important markers of success for a BOOMers trip is the new friendships made and camaraderie established.

However the other most important element of the trip is the quality of the morning tea! Generally a cup of coffee and a nice cake or pastry is more than acceptable. A notable highlight was last month when the first of two trips went to the café at Parramatta Park. There they each had a veritable feast of a round of sandwiches, a cake and a scone! David (age 83) posted a picture on our Facebook page and we had a stampede of men for the next week.

TRAVEL

I was young once too…

My children might now be 27 and 29, and well past the age at which I should worry about them, yet somehow I still do. And I know I am not alone among parents. How are things at work? Are you eating properly? How’s the love life? (that one guarantees a ‘butt out’ grimace!)

Of course, I am always still interested in the holidays they are proposing or have booked. Being Millenials, their primary research is done online or via social media, and not via a boring old travel agent like their mother!

Interestingly, Millenials constitute the biggest demographic group among those turning or returning to travel agents to help them make the most of the information that is out there. It seems that they are starting to suffer from information overload and time pressures, so that part of our role is now as interpreter and evaluator of the best options. And we remain happy to oblige.

It surprises many a young person that inside this older agent is a once young person who embarked on travel adventures with identical enthusiasm! It also surprises them that we still maintain a vast library of resources especially designed to meet the needs of younger travellers with amazingly diverse interests.

Where schoolies trips were once informally arranged, there are now complete programmes and tours both in Australia and overseas to manage the segue from high school to freedom.

From there we move into the likes of Contiki and Topdeck, perennial favourites among the early to mid 20-somethings, though they are also open to those in their mid-thirties. There are camping or hostel options, and options that deliver touring by coach or boat, and even hop-on, hop-off buses.

By the time they get to their late 20s/early 30s, how this demographic travels seems to be largely determined by marital status. If married, Millenials tend to go off on active holidays as a couple. If unmarried, it is with one or two close friends, or a group of gal pals on something adventurous. Yet again, it tends not to be in the confines of a ‘group’.

Joy celebrates

100 years Local resident Joy Lenne celebrated a major milestone when she turned 100 years on August 3rd.

This amazing lady has lived in Lane Cove Gardens for the past 26 years, after her husband Keith passed away in 1991.

She lives independently within the Village.

Joy’s daughter Denise Thompson says that her Mum is active, alert, and very well.

“We all love her, as she is always engaged in life and her young attitude means that she identifies with all ages.

She’s very stylish and loves smart clothes and she also loves entertaining her friends and family for meals, and/or champagne!”

In her 70's and 80's, Joy was involved in voluntary work in Lane Cove Gardens, at the Dougherty Centre in Chatswood and at Willoughby Council.

“Mum was instrumental in getting the bus shelter built on the corner of Felton Ave and Mowbray Rd. She also worked at the Council for the Aged in the city and received a Premier's Award for her efforts.”

Before Joy married in 1942, she worked with a physiotherapist in Melbourne, keeping fit herself. She is vitally interested in health and nutrition, and it has paid off.

Joy has three children, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, with another on the way. Her family put on a large party for her at Lane Cove Gardens and the management also put on a wonderful afternoon tea.

Joy looks forward to continuing the affection and love she shares with family and friends, and her family are so proud of their Centennial Matriarch!

Unprecedented success for St Michael’s Monster Garage Sale This year’s St Michael’s Parish Monster Garage Sale proved to be the most successful to date with over $14,000 raised for the two charities – Caritas and Youth off the Streets. The cake stall was also well supported by both bakers and buyers, raising $1600.

So why were this year’s takings over $2000 more than last year? The answer lies in social media.

With the advent of Facebook and its myriad of sites - In the Cove and Lower North Shore (Sydney) Free Stuff and Low Waste Living to mention two examples - they were able to reach a wider community than previously and this made all the difference.

The question often asked when talking about a garage sale that receives so many donations (with not all of them being saleable) is “What do you do with the left overs?”

Readers can be assured that nothing is wasted. Youth off the Streets come with a truck on Monday morning and take most of the leftovers. They stock their regional stores this way.

Books go to Lifeline, Exodus takes items for teenage mums in the Rockdale area, Jesuit Mission takes further boxes and more valuable items are sold.

The garage sale volunteers would like to sincerely thank all who donated goods and came to buy. It’s always a joyous day and we love seeing so many happy people clutching their bargains. We hope to see you all again next year.

QUESTION TIME FOR COUNCIL CANDIDATES WRITTEN BY THE EXECUTIVE OF THE LANE COVE BUSHLAND & CONSERVATION SOCIETY

Conservation Society recommends that voters ask the following questions of all candidates:

AMALGAMATION:

For many years, almost all the councillors on lower North Shore councils were independents. Things ran smoothly for Lane Cove, with innovations such as the Plaza, Community Aid and the expansion of care for our bushland.

● Are you a member of a political party? ● Do you live in the Lane Cove Council area? ● Will you commit to rejecting voluntary or forced amalgamation?

Then two elections ago the Liberal party decided to support Liberal party candidates. Lane Cove Council has had six Liberal party councillors and three Independents since then.

The Liberals have almost always voted as a bloc, except for Councillors Bennison and Karpin who, thankfully, voted with the three Independents to continue Council’s legal action against forced amalgamation.

Four Liberal councillors voted to drop the case, which would have probably resulted in Lane Cove being amalgamated with Hunters Hill and Ryde councils. The Premier backed down on forcing our amalgamation and the Court released its decision in Council’s favour a few days later.

However, the Premier and local government Minister Upton still believe in amalgamation and it is still the Liberal/National government’s policy.

The current Labor opposition is against forced amalgamations, but we remember the Wran Labor government’s 1979 attempt to amalgamate lower North Shore councils which was abandoned after it was shown that we didn’t want it and that the claimed financial benefits were dodgy. Sound familiar?

Sometimes it has been difficult to get people to stand for council. Real work is involved and the pay isn’t very high. But some strange things are happening in the council elections on September 9th.

The most ominous thing is the nomination of party candidates. In Lane Cove, the West Ward has three Liberal, three Labor and three Independent candidates. In the East Ward, there are three Liberal candidates and seven Independent candidates. In Central ward, there are three Liberal, three Labor 30 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 266 I SEPTEMBER 2017

● If a political party candidate, will you prioritise the interests of the community over your party’s platform?

GREENSPACE: ● Will you support and/or expand the existing open space/bushland budget and commit to maintaining our green credentials?

and the extraordinary number of 10 Independent candidates.

For the first time, Hunters Hill has endorsed Liberal party candidates. In Ryde, which has had party councillors for some time, four political parties are jostling for control. Why have the parties and particularly the Liberal party, developed this enthusiasm for local government? The spectre is that Liberal councillors will follow the Party line and move towards voluntary amalgamation.

The Party line is strong; Ministers Upton, Toole, and Roberts (the member for Lane Cove), have publically opposed amalgamations but ultimately toed the Party line. Independent councillors can decide what’s best for Lane Cove.

The Lane Cove community has shown clearly that it does not want any amalgamation with other councils.

Remember, the new councillors will shape Lane Cove’s direction for the next four years. We need the right people who put our community first!

With this and other important issues at stake, the Lane Cove Bushland &

● Will you support the introduction of Wildlife Protection Zones in all of our bushland reserves? ● Will you commit to ensuring that any negotiations under the Crown Lands Negotiation Program will retain all Crown Land in Lane Cove in community ownership and not allow any to be sold off?

DEVELOPMENT: ● Will you resist further unit development, given that Lane Cove has already exceeded the previously set Governments targets? ● Will you reject any new Voluntary Planning Agreements that increase a development’s height or size? This applies in particular to the St Leonards and St Leonards South areas. ● Will you reject the Government’s proposal to allow Complying Medium Density Housing throughout all residential areas in Lane Cove and require it to be contained within the R3 zoned areas only? ● Will you allow further community input to the design for the public open space on top of the Rosenthal development rather than leaving it up to the contractor and Council’s staff to finalise the details?

A big thank you to Shutters Australia from SCS Sydney Community Services’ (formerly Lane Cove & North Side Community Services) beautiful new offices in Pottery Lane are bright and airy with lots of space and glass. However one drawback was that the full-length picture windows overlooking the pool also let in a lot of sun which made the room hot and also a bit too bright for some of the activities.

As this will be my last TVO column as Mayor of Hunters Hill, I would like to acknowledge my fellow Hunters Hill councillors and thank them for their service to our community over the past five or more years.

Whilst our debates at Council meetings have at times been robust, there has always been a high standard of mutual respect and due regard for meeting procedure. The political antics and personal attacks that are regularly televised from our State and Federal Parliaments have not been evident in the Hunters Hill Council Chamber in these last five years.

Each of our councillors has participated fully and professionally debated the issues that impact on our community, but always in a spirit of mutual respect. I gratefully acknowledge the efforts and support of Councillors Meredith Sheil, Justine McLaughlin and Mark Bennett, who have all served as Deputy Mayor at various times.

Clr Sheil, who is not seeking re-election, has generously served our community since her election in 2008, including as Deputy Mayor from 2012 to 2015. She has been a committed and passionate advocate of our community’s ongoing independence.

Similarly, Clr Peter Astridge has given 22 years of generous and committed service to the Hunters Hill community since being first elected to Council in 1995 under the ‘No Aircraft Noise’ banner. Peter was subsequently elected as Deputy Mayor in 2002-2003 and 2005-2006. I wish him every blessing and good health in his retirement from local government.

Also retiring is Clr Gary Bird, who was elected to Council in 2012 and has been a passionate advocate particularly for the Gladesville area where he helped initiate the Gladesville Flicks ‘n Eats and the Spring Festival. I thank Gary for his commitment and dedication to our community.

It has been a great privilege to serve as Mayor of Hunters Hill since 2012 and as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor since 1999. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many wonderful people in our community over that time, including the dedicated and professional staff at Council, led by our General Manager, Barry Smith.

I extend best wishes to Councillors Mark Bennett, Justine McLaughlin and Zac Miles as they each contest the upcoming elections.

It is gratifying that our ongoing fight against the NSW Government’s forced mergers has now been vindicated, with the NSW Premier announcing that the forced merger of Hunters Hill Council with Lane Cove Council and the City of Ryde would not proceed.

In addition, the legal action taken by the Council was also ultimately successful with the Court of Appeal finding “the proposal made by the Minister for Local Government under Section 218E(1) of the Local Government Act 1993 for the amalgamation of Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and Ryde local government areas is invalid”.

The Court also ruled that the NSW Government pay all our legal costs. We now look forward to Council focusing on the core business of providing service to our local community without this ongoing distraction.

NDIS forum Thank you to everyone who attended the recent National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) forum at Norths in Cammeray, particularly to the staff of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) for participating in the forum and for listening to local residents.

The scheme is a major social and economic reform which will individualise and improve support for those with a significant disability.

Our government is committed to supporting the NDIA’s mission to implement the NDIS experience. The NDIS is reviewing participant and provider pathways to ensure a strong and continuing focus on those receiving and delivering services.

The input of the local community is valuable in helping us shape an NDIS that will serve us now and into the future.

Lane Cove Fun Run It’s that time of year again! Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Lane Cove Fun Run is back.

This wonderful initiative is organised by the Lane Cove Public School P&C. Proceeds raised from the event contribute to the provision of extra teaching and learning support staff at Lane Cove Public. This year, 10% of the proceeds will be donated to two local women’s and children’s refuges to support victims of domestic violence.

It’s a great opportunity to think about fitness, enjoy our community spirit and support some truly deserving causes. I hope to see you all there.

Your energy provider The Federal government recently secured a commitment from energy providers to contact all of the customers who are on expired energy discounts to tell them how much they can save on a better deal.

Stronger Communities Programme Thank you to all of the groups from Lane Cove that submitted applications for round 3 of the Turnbull Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The programme offers grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 to support projects in our local community. Our office will be in contact with applicants shortly to advise of the outcome.

Community Awards Congratulations to all of the residents of Lane Cove who were nominated for my North Sydney Community Awards. The awards recognise the many volunteers and community organisations that work to make our area a better place. It’s heart-warming to know that there are so many people quietly working in our area to help others in need or to support the community.

I look forward to seeing all of the nominees at the Awards Ceremony at 10.30am on Friday, 15th September at Norths in Cammeray.

IHAP legislation makes planning decisions transparent Ratepayers can have full confidence in planning decisions now that Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels (IHAPs) are mandatory for all councils in Greater Sydney and Wollongong.

The Bill passed the NSW Parliament last week. I introduced this legislation and I am extremely proud of it.

The NSW Government introduced the Environmental Planning and Assessment and Electoral Legislation Bill as a safeguard against corruption.

This is a fantastic outcome for ratepayers, as IHAPs bring transparency, integrity and a high degree of probity to the Development Application (DA) assessment process.

These panels, which will consider applications valued at between $5 million and $30 million as well as a range of highrisk development types, will give communities and ratepayers greater certainty about planning decisions.

Most importantly, local councils will be able to focus on preparing the strategic plans and development controls that will identify the range and location of development types for their local area.

Local councils will also continue to process most applications for individual houses or alterations to existing houses.

The Bill sets a standard model for IHAPs, comprising three independent expert members and a community member.

The community member will represent the geographical area within the LGA of the proposed development, to provide local perspective.

IHAP members will have to be expert in one or more of the following fields: planning, architecture, heritage, the environment, urban design, economics, traffic and transport, law, engineering, tourism, or government and public administration.

The chair must also have expertise in law or government and public administration.

Property developers and real estate agents will not be able to sit on the panels under the amendments.

The panel members themselves will be subject to statutory rules such as a compulsory code of conduct and operational procedures for the panels.

Further selection criteria will be outlined in the recruitment process.

One question I was asked was whether ratepayers and applicants would be able to attend panel meetings and put their submissions forward. The answer is ‘yes’, just as they could when councils made these decisions.

And there will always be a right of appeal through the Land and Environment Court - that has not changed.

It is essential that Government has a transparent and accountable process in place when assessing DAs of significant value, when there is a conflict of interest for the council or developer, or when they are of a sensitive nature.

Councils will be able to share a panel to improve efficiencies and in the regional parts of the state, panels would remain voluntary.

COMMUNITY I ART SOCIETY

Let your imagination soar Guy Warren, one of the esteemed founders of the Lane Cove Art Society (LCAS), was the guest presenter for the Society’s July meeting.

Ann Cape, well known portrait artist, acted as a facilitator on the evening by interviewing Guy and encouraging questions from the audience. Sharing entertaining stories from his rich life experiences uncovered fascinating insights into this artist’s overwhelming passion for mark making.

Born in Goulburn in 1921, Guy spent most of his teenage years at various beaches on the Sydney coastline. However it is the rainforest environment that exerted a profound influence on his work.

Wartime training at Canungra; actual wartime service in New Guinea during WWII; and the purchase of a small patch of rainforest on the Jamberoo escarpment in the 1980’s, has allowed the mystery of this tangled ecosystem to take centre stage in Guy’s artwork.

Guy’s talk centred around a video produced by his son, Paul Warren, for a recent exhibition at the S.H. Ervin gallery titled ‘Genesis of a Painter’. It focused on works from Guy’s earlier years and those from the last decades.

In the video, Barry Pearce used the word ‘connectivity’ to describe the body of work that was exhibited in ‘Genesis of a Painter’. This connection between the human figure and the landscape often showed ghostly depictions of figures mysteriously appearing and disappearing across the picture plane – not unlike the mists that swirl around rainforest environments.

The rainforest environment offered an artistic lifeline on several occasions in Guy’s journey. In London in the 1950’s Guy found everything too neat in comparison to the untidy Australian bush. He needed inspiration. His memories of New Guinea surfaced and aided by photos from David Attenborough of indigenous people from the Mt Hagen area, Guy produced a body of paintings that were to make up his first exhibition in London.

Upon returning to Australia, Guy was unhappy with what he was producing. A friend offered him a house at Mungo Brush for a break. The magic of the surrounding rainforest worked and inspired a series of watercolours that had a very different mark in them.

Imagination and a sense of wonder have coloured Guy’s artistic journey. He allowed the landscape to draw itself by actually recording the marks produced as a car bumped its way through the landscape. Bodies were covered in canvas and then paint was applied. The outcome gave interesting 2D/ 3D juxtapositions.

Art is about taking risks, as is life.

Guy’s career had many interesting twists to it. He initially worked for The Bulletin, but after the war he attended the National Art School. He produced portraits for the new decimal notes in 1966; worked as an art critic for The Australian; was an art editor in London; worked in advertising agencies; taught at Sydney University to architectural students with Lloyd Rees, and spent many years fulfilling academic and teaching roles. Guy’s service to art education saw him officially recognised in 1999 with an OAM, and an AM followed in 2014.

As a gentle, elder statesman of the art world, this ‘genius amongst us’, as Barry Pearce remarked, continues to work steadily.

Thankyou Guy for spending time with the Society that you founded over 50 years ago. It’s time to let our imagination’s soar.

LCAS would like to extend a warm thank you to Jan and Alan Rees for opening up the house and studio of Lloyd Rees to members on the 26th July. This thoughtful gesture allowed artists to see the humble space that produced magnificent works under the masterly touch of our founder Lloyd.

Jan and Alan presented a palette used by Lloyd, inscribed with signatures of previous LCAS members, to the Society as a lasting memento to inspire future generations of artists.

NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the society will be on Tuesday 26th September.

Guest Artist Kevin McKay, an urban landscape painter with a long list of awards to his name, will discuss ‘understanding colour’.

FOR GALLERY LANE COVE ‘VEHICLE’ A SOLO EXHIBITION

Celebrating art in Lane Cove The opening of the 54th Lane Cove Art Award on Friday 11th August celebrated the great diversity of art in Lane Cove.

The evening was a spectacular affair, with the Town Crier calling all to come. Gallery Lane Cove was filled with viewers and artists keen to see the tremendous variety of award winning works on display.

This year’s judges, Rosa Fedele and Shazia Imran, chose the winners from over 200 entries, with works coming from interstate and locally.

Lane Cove Mayor, Clr Deborah Hutchens, opened the exhibition. The Art Society president, Lyn Teal, expressed sincere thanks for the support the Society has always had from Council and the Society’s patron, former mayor Ian Longbottom.

In welcoming the many guests, Lyn also thanked Lane Cove Rotary for their support. The entry fee and a percentage of the proceeds of sales go towards Rotary’s community projects. In addition, Lyn thanked sponsors Hyecorp Property Group, The Baytree by Ardency Greenwich, and patron Ian Longbottom.

The main prize of $2000 for ‘Aspects of Lane Cove’ was won by local artist Pamela Irving, for her stunning ‘3 Shades of Guy’, a tribute to wellknown local artist Guy Warren. This work has been acquired by Council for its permanent collection.

Prizes of $800 were won by Maggie Bullock for Traditional Oils or Acrylics; Hong Zhu Yong for Watercolours; Pamela Irving for Pastels or Drawings; Liz Harriott for Artists' Prints; and Alison Stewart for Contemporary.

The Hyecorp Property Group Prize of $1500 was won by Greg Hansell; the Baytree by Ardency Prize of $1250 was won by Diana Hallowes; and the Patron’s Prize of $500 was won by Bernhardine Mueller.

Lane Cove Art Society members also received Highly Commended awards (Barbara Goldin and Vivienne McDonald) and a Commended award (John Perkins).

The Art Society wishes to thank the judges for their time and expertise; Gallery Lane Cove for their assistance; Art Scene Ryde and Porters Northwood for their generous donations and support; and John Haycraft for donating a raffle painting.

Max was the 2015 joint winner of the Lloyd Rees Youth Awards. His recent works have focused on painting and photography, particularly in the expression of the Australian landscape.

Outdoor expeditions have been key to Max’s studio practice, leading to works that reveal an appreciation for the characteristics of light and atmosphere.

Views of hills, paths and towns that feature trees, houses or both make up the majority of his compositions. Each highlights the reduction of forms to their essential shapes so that narratives might form in those in-between places.

Megan’s latest exhibition of paintings explores consciousness and a sense of self. The two greatest mysteries in all of nature are the mind and the universe.

How does our subjective sense of self arise from our material bodies? No-one knows the answer to this ‘hard problem’. But in this exhibition Megan uses a personal pictorial language created by adapting images from the Hubble Space telescope, information processing and neuroscience, to explore and reflect on this fascinating topic.

Holding the Man The Lane Cove Theatre Company presented its highly acclaimed production of Holding the Man, by Tommy Murphy, in August.

Five performances totally sold out, and the company ran an extended season which also sold out, making it our most successful non-musical production in the last 23 years!

Congratulations to the company of actors and crew for their stellar work on bringing this beautiful Australian production to the stage to rousing applause and outstanding industry reviews. Shared parenting isn’t for everyone Following a separation, should children spend equal time with both parents?

Until quite recently, shared parenting was uncommon. Up until 2006, only about 4% of parents had equal time with their children. But following 2006, Family Law amendments meant that courts were required to consider equal time in most cases, and the percentage of equal time arrangements shot up to 35%. Not everyone was happy about this: some critics argued that where one parent was violent and domineering, this was contrary to the children's best interests.

But then the trend towards shared parenting began reversing. By 2013, the percentage of families opting for equal time had dropped to about 16%. This trend continues today.

Why? The big factor seems to be that around the same time the courts came out for shared parenting, the government also put considerable funds towards establishing Family Relationships Centres as a one-stop-shop to assist parents

resolve parenting issues. This meant that parents are now usually required to undergo Family Dispute Resolution prior to going to court.

Now the majority of parents, when they get good advice and with the help of Family Dispute Resolution, can work out their own parenting arrangements.

And the majority of parents don’t choose equal time. The courts have followed the same trend.

Another factor supporting this trend is the rising popularity in Australia of child inclusive mediation, in which children have their own mediator who participates in the mediation process on the children’s behalf. This process, taking into account the children’s wishes, motivates the parents to come to agreements which often don’t involve shared parenting.

What seems clear is this. A 50:50 care arrangement is the optimum

arrangement, and many children thrive in such a setting. But it’s not for everyone.

To work well it seems to require parents to live in close proximity to each other, be experienced carers, have adequate resources, flexible work arrangements and that the parents are able to communicate and cooperate in their children’s best interests.

It often doesn’t work so well when the children are very young or are teenagers.

Those who do opt for equal time generally find that a week with one, then a week with the other, works better than pingpong arrangements where the children come and go several times a week.

This may disappoint some parents hoping for equal time. Still, more parents are able to spend substantial time with their children than used to be the case. The important thing is that the welfare of the children comes ahead of their parents’ personal wishes. In most instances, but not always, it’s better for their children to spend the majority of nights in one home.

BEGINNERS’ ROUTE: This is 2.3km and mainly downhill on a gentle gradient, following the Epping Road Cycleway, quiet streets and footpaths. This route is recommended for young children on bikes and scooters, accompanied by an adult.

It is a great relaxing and friendly outing for families and people of all ages. You don’t need to be an ‘expert’ cyclist to participate and there are three routes to cater for different cycling ability.
