EDITOR'S NOTE After we went to the polls in early September, our new Council has been sworn in. Six councillors have been re-elected, and are joined by three new councillors for the next term.

With the extraordinary meeting by Council to vote in Lane Cove’s Mayor taking place on the same day that TVO went to print, we were unable to bring you details in this issue. However next month we hope to interview our Mayor to share their plans for their tenure through to September 2020.

In this month’s TVO, we feature a range of local award winners.

First up there are volunteers who have been recognised for their important contribution at the recent North Sydney Community Awards. One of the worthy recipients was Sydney Community Services (formerly Lane Cove & North Side Community Services). See page 8 for details.

Then there’s local businessman Len Wallis of Len Wallis Audio, who has just been

inducted into the CEDIA fellows program for his contribution to the audio-visual industry. Len was presented with this prestigious award in California.

Independent Katherine Morris was elected into Central Ward; Independent Frances Vissel was elected to East Ward, and Labor candidate Andrew Zbik was elected to West Ward.

They will replace Councillors Gold, Cheong and Karpin.

In Central Ward, the Liberal Party led by Clr Deborah Hutchens received 40% of the votes, followed by separate Independent groups led by Katherine Morris (with just over 18%) and Karola Brent (with just over 16%).

In East Ward, Independents led by Pam Palmer had a strong following with almost 40% of the votes, followed closely by the Liberal Party led by David Brooks-Horn with 36%. Another Independents team led by Frances Vissel received just over 23% of the votes.

In the West Ward, the Liberal Party led by Scott Bennison received 39% of the votes, followed by Independents led

by Daniel Strassberg with 34% and the Labor Party led by Andrew Zbik with almost 27%.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected at an extraordinary meeting on September 25th. The new Council will also be sworn in at this time.

GREEN THUMBS GET BEHIND NEW GARDEN COMPETITION Residents entered gardens of all shapes and sizes in Lane Cove’s inaugural garden competition, providing the perfect welcome to Spring.

The variety of colour and texture coming from natural materials and elements was brilliant with an impressive array of clever ideas brought to life.

Some gardens were more formal with highly constructed retaining walls, terraced garden beds, boundary walls and steps as features. From the use of symmetry and companion planting to the creation of enchanting spaces that provide feelings of peacefulness and fulfilment, it was clear to the judges that the gardens had been tended to by passionate gardeners, creating something that benefits the whole community.

Each garden was judged according to how welcoming it was, the overall design, the visual impact and the unique approach used. There was a winner and runner-up in each of the five categories, receiving $500 and $250 respectively.

Len Wallis achieves highest industry honour Len Wallis, owner and Managing Director of Lane Cove’s Len Wallis Audio, has recently been inducted to the CEDIA fellows program.

The prestigious award is given by CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) to long-time members and volunteers who have made a substantial contribution to the association’s success.

The award recognises and acknowledges the contribution to the industry that Len and his company have made.

The fellowship award is an especially high honour for Len, as he is the first Australian and only one of a small group outside of the US to receive this. On the night of the award, recently hosted on the USS Midway in San Diego, California, Len commented that his company and staff benefited greatly from the association with CEDIA. “CEDIA has a global reputation for excellence and in concert with CEDIA Australia, has helped raise the skill level and quality of work undertaken by Australian audio-video professionals.”

Len has a distinguished career in Australia’s audio industry, whilst simultaneously earning an enviable reputation internationally for the quality and originality of his company’s custom installation, home automation and integration systems.

Len Wallis Audio custom installations have been designed for consumers in many overseas countries and feature regularly in global magazines for their excellence and aesthetics.

Len has spent his working life in audio, starting as a salesperson for MS Sound in 1970. He opened Len Wallis Audio (LWA) in 1978 as a one-man show, and now as Managing Director, is still very much involved in all aspects of the company.

Performing between 2.00 - 3.00pm (time subject to change) on the Lloyd Rees Bandstand, Horns Plus will be directed by renowned trumpet player and Lane Cove Renowned resident Bob Coassin, trumpet player who has been working and local resident with the band over the Bob Coassin past six months. Locals acknowledged at Community Awards evening The annual North Sydney Community Awards, organised by Trent Zimmerman MP, were held in September to acknowledge and thank local volunteers. Guest speaker was Geraldine Doogue, who presented the awards with Mr Zimmerman.

In July 1997 after learning more about the free service offered by Mortgage Choice, and successfully refinancing my own home loan, I bought a franchise on Sydney’s North Shore and haven’t looked back since.

It’s time to get off the peri-menopause merry-go-round!

At about age 44 (give or take about five years) women start to experience the first signs of peri-menopause. Most of us don’t recognise the signs, nor do we want to think about the possibility of menopause!

In our 40's, women experience a drop in progesterone, which is one of the hormones that our body makes as part of the menstrual cycle. This is part of a normal transition towards menopause and usually accompanied by mild symptoms.

However, progesterone is a complicated hormone and it can have wide-ranging effects when it is in short supply.

Stress hormones are one of the main culprits for causing a further drop in progesterone, so a stressed-out, perimenopausal woman can find herself on a merry-go-round from hell!

Progesterone helps to calm our stress response and when we don't have enough of it, we can experience anxiety, depression and insomnia. Women in their 40s can be shocked to find that even though they are under no more pressure than in the past, they are having trouble coping with it in the same way.

It’s not uncommon for a peri-menopausal woman to be wide-awake at 2am with a busy mind and be unable to get back to sleep for several hours. This will typically happen in a cycle, with the worst insomnia occurring in the lead up to a period.

Low progesterone can also cause much heavier periods than before; irregular cycles; clotting or flooding; PMS, and can even contribute to seemingly unrelated health problems such as digestive problems; constipation; fibroids, and worsening allergic responses.

What can you do?

Women who look after themselves during this peri-menopause transition stage will usually find that managing menopause is much easier, so it is important to take time for some self-care.

1. Manage your stress levels!

Looking after yourself is a priority by resting when you need to, switching to a less intense type of exercise, and meditating. Look at your lifestyle and decide if there’s anything that you could let go, or find ways to have more fun.

2. Cut back on coffee and alcohol. These everyday habits affect your sleep, digestion, healthy gut bacteria and stress hormones. Aim for no more than one coffee and one glass of wine per day, with three alcohol free days per week.

3. Eat nourishing foods.

Magnesium-rich foods are important for coping with stress and improving sleep, so add more green leafy vegetables, eggs, legumes, almonds and cashews to your diet.

Protein and healthy fats are also important for making hormones, so eating a small amount at every meal is beneficial.

4. Work with a naturopath.

It is important to assess your health holistically, including liver and thyroid function, digestion, mood and nutritional requirements.

When a person is unable to stop doing something that is having harmful consequences for them, or for others, they may have an addiction.

What are the different kinds of addictions?

The most common addictions are alcohol and tobacco, but increasingly we are seeing problems resulting from misuse of prescription drugs such as codeine and other painkillers, sedatives and sleeping tablets. Street drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine are well known to have detrimental effects for many who use these drugs, and we also recognise the negative effects of behavioural addictions such as gambling, shopping and computer gaming.

How do I know if I have an addiction or substance use problem?

Often a person, or those around them, will notice things going wrong in parts of their life as a result of a problematic pattern of substance use. This might include challenges at work or with study, difficulty maintaining relationships or perhaps physical changes such as disrupted sleep or tremors.

Some common features of a worsening

addiction may include needing more of the substance for the same effect, experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance, prioritising the substance use at the cost of other parts of life and unsuccessfully trying to cut down.

What do I do if I am worried about addiction?

These comprehensive assessments will provide patients with an individualised plan and will offer strategies to help with the management of their substance use, allowing them to regain control and reduce harm.

According to the American researcher, the late Dr John R Lee, female progesterone levels have been declining for the last 70 years.

Similarly, the quality of eggs is in decline, with some IVF clinics showing fertilisation sometimes lasting only days or hours. A decline in progesterone from immature follicular cells mirrors increasing PMS as a major (but not the only) contributor to infertility symptoms.

Just as bad is research on declining sperm count. According to Dr Andrew Orr in a recent Sydney symposium on an Integrative Approach to Fertility & IVF, a healthy ejaculate once produced 500 million viable sperm. Now, IVF labs seem happy with as few as 20 million.

As with eggs, sperm shape and form is also declining, along with their vigour.

How do I maintain the health of my ovaries and uterus, testes and prostate? Normalising dietary nutrient input and reducing attack by environmental pollutants is important.

One of the simplest cosmetic treatments is recontouring. Teeth with rough edges or sharp points can be easily reshaped and polished to create a fresh, new appearance.

If your teeth are heavily worn or damaged, or if you have many fillings or other surface imperfections, you may choose to place porcelain crowns or veneers over them.

A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic layer bonded to the front of the teeth and can be used to improve their colour, shape and size.

Crowns are much the same, except that they cover the entire tooth from the gum up and are generally reserved for situations where strength needs to be added or if the shape of a tooth needs to be drastically changed.

A more conservative approach to cosmetic dentistry is using bonded composite resin to change the appearance of the teeth. This material is added directly to the teeth and sculpted by the dentist into the desired shape. Less removal of healthy tooth structures is required, teeth can be lengthened, and rotations in teeth can be disguised and corrected. Veneers can even be made using composite resin.

The results are good for some years, but not as durable in the long-term as ceramic materials such as porcelain.

Cosmetic treatments often end up being a combination of all these approaches.

For example, a patient may have hygiene treatment, followed by Invisalign and whitening, and finishing with some composite bonding and recontouring to create a perfect result.

Your dentist can suggest the options that will work for you.

Around 87,000-plus irreversible man-made single chemicals now accumulate in the environment, small enough to enter your cells, impede normal hormonal activity and interfere with fertility.

Massive opportunities for better fertility now exist that may reverse the above trends.

With a wealth of travel information on the Internet - everything from what to take [the minimum]; how to pack it [roll ‘em up tightly and squash]; sunscreens; passport information; travel insurance; how to contact an Australian Embassy in an emergency – travellers can be well prepared. God bless Google I say!

Two Government sites stand out – smartravellers.gov.au and australia.gov.au/ information-and-service. There are several others.

I found a lot of advice sheets on different travel issues in my computer medical programme - Best Practice. Other medical programmes have the same. Ask for these when you visit your GP. For this article, it’s generic medical advice and tips only and not all you may need for your specific trip (for example, what to do if you’re bitten by a monkey in Borneo, which would be to get the Rabies vaccine ASAP!].

Surely the best trips are when you don’t have to consume any of the $150 worth of medication you brought with you, or when you know your travel insurance will cover that nasty little accident when you tripped and sprained your ankle at the Prado museum.

What should I do before I leave?

Get as much information on your destination as possible – whether it be from your travel agent, tour guide, the Internet or by reading the many travel guides available.

When should I see my GP? Go to your doctor and have your vaccinations brought up to date for the countries you plan to visit. Do this several months before you plan to leave. Why get sick when a vaccination will prevent illness? The information your GP has is updated regularly.

What else can my GP do for me?

Your GP can print out advice sheets for the countries you plan to visit which provide information about the water, the kinds of infections to avoid, sexual health issues, awareness of food transmitted illnesses and more.

What else should I ask for?

Regulation 24 for travellers allows you to pick up a sixmonth supply of your regular medications, so ask your doctor for a script. You may need other scripts for your particular travel such as travel sickness, malaria avoidance or prophylaxis, diarrhoea prevention, altitude sickness and others on your travel list.

Bring your tetanus shot up-todate at least.

You are advised to do leg exercises for plane and car travel. In addition, keep up your water intake, wear Scholl Flight Socks or similar to prevent a leg blood clot, don’t have too much booze as it is dehydrating and can contribute to DVT and walk up and down the cabin frequently when flying.

Don’t forget some Third World travel destinations require or suggest Rabies vaccine, Hepatitis A and B, Japanese Encephalitis, Yellow Fever vaccine, Dengue Fever and Meningitis vaccination.

These are listed on the travel advices either from your GP or in travel guides.

What about Customs in different countries?

Do get a letter for Customs from your GP detailing what tablets you take, so that you can avoid a stretch in the Bangkok Hilton. A narky Customs officer who’s had a fight with his wife that day can make things horrifying for you.

Especially for young travellers in places such as China and Russia, unlabelled meds will cause a problem.

Take all your medications in their original packaging along with your chemist’s repeats folder.

What should I do if I have medications containing Narcotics and Codeine for pain?

For people suffering major pain conditions, these medications can be a problem.

I understand a call to Australian Customs may help resolve this dilemma.

Lastly, make sure you take out travel insurance.

This is a no brainer. Think of the horror stories of those in the USA with a fracture or other and the money it can cost them.

The joys of dog ownership There are two types of people in the world. Those who love dogs, and those who don’t. By Liz Foster.

The thing is, having a dog is a bit like before and after you have children.

Once you’ve crossed over you assume it’s obvious to everyone else. When Fido rushes at speed towards the small child staggering around the park, it’s perfectly obvious to you that he wants to play and wouldn’t harm a fly. Not so to the child’s mother, nor the child who in fact is petrified of dogs and starts screaming blue murder. (Why is he in a park full of dogs then, you wonder. Why are dogs in a park where small children play, the mother wonders.)

Our own dog is most beloved, especially by me, but is becoming a grumpy sod in his advancing years. To help counteract this he goes out twice a week with a dog walker, to help him learn to socialise better with other dogs and people.

The dog walker reports that he’s a doll and one of their favourites. In fact, she even dropped around a toy once – wrapped – when he’d hurt his back and

was off walks. ‘He’s our favourite’, said the Crazy Dog Lady. Meanwhile back in public with me, he’s as grumpy as ever, embarrassingly so. There’s no accounting for taste.

My Pilates teacher even brings her spaniel along to each class. She’s somehow trained her to behave as though each and every client has a special place in her heart, which is clever marketing if nothing else. It’s impossible not to find it endearing, even if her swishing tail does tend to interfere with your pelvic curls.

But if you think we’re stupid about dogs over here, we’ve got nothing on the UK. My sister has two Labradors, a large house and a giant tennis court-sized garden. The whole family are on a roster of when to let the dogs out, as they are cooped up in the tiny kitchen all day long.

‘Why don’t you let them stay in the garden?’ I wonder, eyeing the walled courtyard and acres of space perfect for capering canines.

She sighs. ‘Yes, we could, but Marley does tend to bark at the postman, so it’s better to avoid it.’ Hence racing back to the house after many a long day.

Mindful of this, as a novice dog-owner when training my own dog, I installed a snug kennel outside. He still barks at possums and the postman but I don’t care. I might be crazy, but I’m not stupid.

Honouring our volunteers Last month we were delighted to be awarded the North Sydney Community Group of the Year in the North Sydney Community Awards hosted by Trent Zimmerman MP. The ceremony celebrated the work of many individuals and groups in a number of categories including Sporting Achievement, Community Award, North Sydney Young Person of the Year and Older Person of the Year.

The award honours over 400 volunteers from Sydney Community Services who regularly give up their time to support people in Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Ryde. Without their dedication and time, we would not be able to support so many older people or people living with a disability.

When I first started in Lane Cove, I experienced all the roles that volunteers undertake. None of them are easy and they all require patience, dedication and reliability.

Undoubtedly one of the most arduous roles is with the Linen Service, where

teams of two go out to change the sheets and towels for up to six clients at a time.

I find it hard to get up the enthusiasm to change my own bed every week, let alone embark on the marathon of sheets, pillowcases and towels undertaken by our volunteers.

When I was on the linen run it struck me that this is one of the most valuable services we offer, but also the most intimate. The volunteers go into people’s bedrooms and bathrooms and have the trust of the clients and, as many of the volunteers do the same run every time, they get to know the clients extremely well. Also, what can beat the pleasure that you get when you slip between clean fresh sheets?

for the bus to come and pick her up. But before she was ready to leave, she needed to get her shoes on and asked if I could help her put her socks on. It was an easy job for me but I realised that for Joan, it was something that could take a long time and was awkward and frustrating.

If socks are hard, then stripping, washing and drying sheets and towels is nigh on impossible!

The pairs of volunteers include two wonderful men, Alan and John, who change the beds for some of our older gentlemen who prefer to have a man to help with those kinds of chores. Both Alan and John are on the far side of seventy but not only are they are totally reliable, they have a great sense of humour and enjoy the company of each other and the people they see every time.

100 words Is it luck that the car smacked into the embankment rather than plough through oncoming traffic after a fierce battle with the death wobbles?

The second on the scene was a living angel who, with a word, calmed two large, terrified dogs that threatened to shred the first. He then held the head of the unconscious driver until the heart attack spittle cleared from his mouth and the professionals arrived.

Luck indeed this angel, master dog whisperer and life saver, had a strengthening hand on his back from his mum, as her 14-year-old son did his miraculous work.

The teachers at Lane Cove Primary School would always walk the bullring in safety. But the walk was always perilous.

With a well-honed throwing arm of a country kid in the city, a running 4th grader provided an enticing target. This time the target saw the ball coming, ducked quickly, and into view came the walking figure of the sewing teacher.

The ball hit her right between the eyes. No amount of apologies could erase the big red round mark on her forehead, or the stunned look in her eyes. Every button I sew, I think of the sewing teacher.

The two colourful rainbow lorikeets exhibited their gender. The bold male was first to come seeking food. He quickly progressed from showing himself on the balcony handrail to tapping on the kitchen window. His female partner was smaller and less game. She took some time before alighting on any part of the building.

Before too long we were all good friends. The couple would announce their arrival and eat apple from our hand. They timed their arrival perfectly for breakfast.

Then, at start of spring and to our surprise, two become three! An awkward juvenile cautiously joined the morning feeding.

Iris was a computer, an old IBM in fact. It was years since anyone had come near her and she yearned for the person who had fondled her keys and looked lovingly into her big square eye; the person who giggled gleefully when he won a game of solitaire. Apparently, it had something to do with her poor memory.

She advised her peers that if they intertwined all their rams together they could become a team. Under the careful eye of Iris (now known as Iris the Ibis) they infiltrated modern technology and saw that kindness and compassion still existed.

Those bastards. A bag of rubbish in my carport. It had to be those cleaners next door. I placed it over the road.

On return, a Council officer fronted me.

"We had a report. Someone looking like you placed rubbish in the park."

"OK. Let's take a look at it."

We opened it and sh-t, on the top was a letter in my handwriting. It hadn't been those cleaners, it had been my people. The officer, though, was happy.

"We'll really hit this tosser hard."

I held his arm. "Mate, I know this guy.

Just leave it up to me."

I’m Puff, abandoned by my so-called family, I was very scared and lonely until the pretty girl from next door took me in and her lovely Mum has given me my furever home.

Next stop the vet for a health check, ticks removed, smelly stuff to stop fleas, needles, tablets and pregnancy confirmed! Four weeks later my five tiny babies were born. They are beautiful, everyone who visited said so!

Uncle Peter left with Shadow, soon they were all gone. I miss my kittens and sometimes call to them late at night, but I’m well cared for and loved now.

Ozone Park is a suburb of Queens, New York City and where I grew up.

Quiet and residential, it was inhabited mostly by Italian Americans but it had a shady side. In the 1980's it was the place where John Gotti, head of the Gambino crime family had his headquarters. There was no street crime and we always felt safe there.

I can still remember the Christmas lights, Aldo's Pizzeria, Italian bakeries, block parties, sitting on my front porch with my family in summer around a citronella candle, the fourth of July fireworks, but mostly our house on 81st street.

The brown sling bag sitting in the corner of the empty train carriage caught my attention as I entered.

Why was it there? Unattended meant danger. I hurriedly walked onto the upper deck.

Could it be a remote or time bomb?

Quick! Must act before the train gets to Central, where more passengers will be boarding. The bag was still there, carriage deserted. Hmmm is everyone keeping away? Am I being watched?

It was Friday night and my choir sang with its usual gusto.

I walked home, buying groceries and a takeaway. When I arrived – NO KEYS! What to do?

I went upstairs to my neighbour. I used his computer to find a locksmith and his mobile phone to call for help.

One and a half hours later, the locksmith arrived. He said, “Are these your keys?” He had found them on the floor outside my front door. I had dropped them on the carpet and put my parcels on top.

Some people excuse themselves with “senior moment.” I prefer “bloody idiot!”

Changi! An airport to most, but seeing the sign brought back images of proud, but broken men he had known.

He thought of Bob - six feet tall yet still cadaverous thirty years on. What would Bob make of Changi? Would he be pleased that it was now a place of light, of expectations, of purpose, or would the ghosts of old comrades rise questioningly before him?

Bob never spoke about those years, but his eyes said so much. There was a sadness, an unforgiving hurt, an unanswered plea for reasons.

Bob may have forgiven, but he would never forget.

First I gaze at the bay - beautiful this sunny winter’s day. Then I walk through the jungly bit and past Carisbrook gardens. I go by the boathouse and on up the hill. On the flat section I speak to a family improving their verge. I go down the hill – yet another house being built?

- then round the loop road and past the hopeful fishermen. Up the hill to the main road – will they ever fix the cracked pavement? Then I cross at the lights and make my way home.

My morning walk – a magical start to the day.

While Freda sat knitting care bears for a local charity shop, she often wondered about things like how much water people could save if they didn’t rinse detergent suds down the drain after washing up?

Then she thought about what her daughter had said the other day when they were talking about the hard old days.

“Mum, we made it through because we knew we had you standing by us.”

“That is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me dear.”

She nearly cried. The Know-All neighbour appeared. Freda closed the curtains. Time for a strong cup of tea.

Heart murmurs in pets One of the most common causes of a heart murmur is an abnormal heart valve. These can be either congenital or acquired.

A heart murmur is detected with a stethoscope usually during a routine clinical examination. The actual ‘murmur’ is an abnormal heart sound which is usually caused by turbulent (rather than smooth) blood flow.

Congenital murmurs are referred to as ‘innocent’ murmurs if the problem corrects itself (benign). Usually innocent murmurs are less intense (softer). Up to 30% of puppies and kittens can have an innocent murmur.

Heart murmurs are graded by intensity (loudness) from grades 1-6, with a grade 1 being the softest and grade 6 being the loudest. Unfortunately, the grade of the murmur does not always correlate with the severity of heart disease, but can be used in patient records to describe the murmur, which helps determine progression of disease with each examination.

What is the prognosis for pets with heart murmurs?

Not all murmurs progress to congestive heart failure.

Many older pets have heart murmurs due to mitral valve deterioration, but this does not always mean your pet will live a shorter life span. It depends whether the heart can compensate sufficiently without medication.

What are the signs of congestive heart failure in pets?

is done to ensure that the abnormality causing the heart murmur is not life threatening.

Some examples of lifethreatening heart murmurs include aortic stenosis; patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); and ventricular septal defect (VSD).

Testing involves chest x-rays and cardiac ultrasound, usually by a specialist veterinary cardiologist or veterinary ultrasonographer.

Acquired heart murmurs For adult cats and dogs that develop a heart murmur, your vet will be able to guide you with the best diagnostic recommendations depending on the severity of the murmur.

DOGS - Generally, if a heart murmur is detected for the first time and is a grade 1 or 2, then imaging may not be required immediately, however more frequent veterinary exams will be recommended to see how quickly the murmur progresses.

If the murmur is a grade 3/6 or higher, then chest x-rays and a cardiac ultrasound should be carried out to determine the cause. When a chest x-ray is taken, your vet can determine whether the heart is abnormally large and if there is any fluid accumulating on the lungs (pulmonary oedema).

CATS - Require diagnostic testing immediately if a heart murmur is detected. While some of the murmurs are harmless, some cats even with a low intensity murmur can have serious heart disease (eg. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).

This may result in blood clots forming which may lodge in an artery, cutting off blood supply to various parts of the body.

My recommendation

for cats with a murmur is the following: • Blood testing • Chest x-rays • Cardiac ultrasound

What treatment is available?

Congestive heart failure is initially treated with injectable diuretics (frusemide) to rapidly remove fluid congesting the lungs as well as oxygen supplementation. This emergency treatment can be life-saving.

Once your pet is stable, usually your vet will prescribe a combination of diuretics and cardiac drugs.

How can I effectively monitor my pet?

The best way to monitor your pet’s heart disease is to record a sleeping respiratory rate 2-3 times per week. Ideally the respiratory rate per minute should be < 25 breaths. If it gets to 30 breaths or above, it is important to see your vet.

There is now a phone app called Heart2Heart which allows the pet owner to record respiratory rate easily.

Coughing may occur if there is a significant amount of fluid building up on the lungs.

However, coughing is not always the result of fluid and there are many respiratory disorders that can cause concurrent disease in older patients.

How can I help my pet with congestive heart failure?

• Short easy walks • Avoid hot weather • Low stress environment • Regular vet exams • Healthy weight • Low salt diet • Avoid prednisolone • Medications are for life, so ensure you do not miss giving your pet a dose Dr Gretta Howard.

A brief foray into India We’re very fortunate in the travel industry that invitations do come our way from time to time to experience what we sell - be it a cruise ship, a tour, a destination or simply a group of related hotels.

It’s fair to say that some trips are harder than others – Los Angeles might look like FUN FUN FUN but trust me - when you’re into hotel inspection number 6 and it’s only lunchtime, the promise of cocktails and a great dinner seem poor recompense!

However, when you receive a too-good-to-miss invitation for the exotic and interesting, life rocks!

So when one of our preferred (because they are fantastic) partners, Exotic Destinations, said come to India and enjoy a journey encompassing the best of Taj Hotels and Alila Hotels, I didn’t wait to be asked twice. It was also an opportunity for me to test the veracity of claims that you can’t go to India and not get sick (I didn’t get sick), and that beggars are everywhere and won’t leave you alone (poppycock). For the record, this was one of the best trips I have ever experienced in all of my travel career and I think it was the element of surprise that did it for me.

Firstly, the energy in India is amazing. Everyone seems to be doing something – selling bananas roadside, herding donkeys out of the way so cars might pass, pulling handcarts, waiting graciously at tables or enveloping you in the most beautifully warm welcome. Secondly, India is so colourful, interested and interesting. It’s a photographer’s dream: saris of riotous shades, fabulous turbans and luxuriant moustaches, fascinating streetscapes, inquisitive faces. It’s the total package.

Then there’s the unexpected. I had imagined Delhi as a dirty, dusty city. What I found was a city with stunning heritage architecture, a luxuriant forest and huge parklands. The view from our coach as we drove between Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur (‘the Purs’) was mesmerising - fertile fields that sustain millions punctuated by chaotic-looking support towns, rolling hills, and craggy mountains - all of it greener than the parched Sydney to which I returned. The Taj Mahal was sublime. Udaipur and the Lake Palace, magical.

Our much treasured guide, Davinda, kept us entertained and educated throughout. A font of knowledge, he was able to speak about the history of India; its architecture and religions; its customs and culture. How the caste system works and what is being done to improve the lot of those at the bottom (rules and regulations and positive discrimination); the shortcomings of the civil service and bureaucracy and who isn’t working (his sister, whose day is filled with cups of tea!); how arranged marriages are arranged; and why you see litter on the street (the ‘government’ will clean it up).

Young people under 25 constitute 50% of the population. They value education and most still expect to meet their spouse via the aforementioned arranged marriage, have a couple of children and live to a ripe old age. It’s no wonder that India is a future powerhouse and to my mind contrasts sharply with that other would be superpower, China, which labours under communism, the legacy of the one child policy and consequently, a markedly skewed older demographic. It seems so much more certain that India will catch up, and then stride ahead, on many metrics.

Integral to every trip is food and goodness gracious me, did we eat well! There was not a hint of butter chicken (English Indian anyway!).

Instead my breakfasts, lunches and dinners featured dosa, paratha, samosa, pakora, paneer and more. Hot, medium or mild, you choose.

On the odd occasion when we had Indian Chinese or Indian Italian, I was strangely disappointed.

Would I go again? In a heartbeat. Should you consider a trip to India?

Absolutely. My favourite memory? This gorgeous dancer (pictured) whose beads of sweat are barely perceptible despite an energetic routine and humid conditions!

Wanted! Experienced hammock stretchers I feel like we have had a head start with this summery weather that started in spring. The lure of sand in the toes with a dog-eared book is calling.

But before we get to that summer job of hammock stretching, there’s the small chore of end-of-year get-togethers.

‘Taking a plate’ leaves some folks quaking in their thongs, so having something up your sleeve will help calm the nerves. I have two recipes to help you in the kitchen - a last-minute time saving shortbread to have with drinks, together with a make-the-night-before summer fruit trifle.

Spiced savoury shortbread Savoury is just as good as sweet. My savoury mustard, paprika and cheddar shortbread is great with crisp white wine or champagne, olives or as part of a nibbles platter. The dough can be made up in the food processor - quick sticks! Make two batches - one to bake and take that day, and a raw batch ready to roll and bake at a moment’s notice

Summer fruit trifle It’s always tough when everyone brings a dessert, and you watch your heart and soul along with your baking effort be the last to go - even to have to take it home without it being finished. So, here’s something that everyone will gobble up!

INGREDIENTS

Salad tips • T hink of your favourite soup flavours and translate that into a salad. Tray roast the vegetables, brighten the flavour with a splash of white wine vinegar, then toss through salad leaves with complimentary herbs, cheese, legumes or toasted nuts.

• Roasted pumpkin, with coriander, cucumber, black beans and crumbled feta is a great combination. Or try barbequed corn sheared off the cob, tossed with lime zest and juice, avocado, basil, cherry tomatoes and shaved parmesan.

• If you’re taking a salad to a party, add thinly sliced onions and dressing to the base of the bowl, then lay a sheet of greaseproof paper over this with the other salad ingredients on top of the paper. At the time of serving, remove the paper and toss the dressing through.

This will keep your salad crisp, whilst marinating the onion so it’s not so bitey.

• 480 gms plain flour, sifted • 360 gms unsalted butter at room temperature • 50 gms Reggiano Parmigiano, grated • 1 tspn sea salt • 1 tspn smoked paprika • 1 tspn dry mustard powder • 1 tblspn fresh thyme • 1 egg yolk • 30-40 mls cold water • ½ cup sesame seeds or poppy seeds METHOD • Add dry ingredients to your food processor, with the flour first to help the mixing. Mix on pulse till the mixture looks like damp sand, then add the egg yolk and half of the cold water. Pulse to let it come together, taking care not to overwork the dough. If it’s a humid day, you may not need all the water.

• Once it is a soft dough, scrape into a bowl, cover with wrap, and pat and roll into two logs about 4-5 cm diameter.

• Roll in raw sesame seeds, wrap in cling wrap and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. This lets the gluten relax, the butter to firm up and it also helps with handling. You can keep one roll in the fridge for later, and bake one now.

• Preheat a fan forced oven to 170 degrees. Grease or layer a baking sheet with greaseproof paper. Remove pastry from fridge, cut into ½ cm thick discs and lay onto the tray with about 2 cm between each to allow for spreading.

Bake 15-20 mins or until a light golden brown. Transfer to a cooling rack and store in an airtight container.

• Cooked shortbread keeps for about one week. Chilled raw dough keeps for about two weeks in the fridge, or one month in the freezer.

Everyone loves a trifle, so how about a layered fruit trifle, with berries, stone fruit and melon, topped with coconut yoghurt.

Light, nutritious and a great change to cheesecakes and rich chocolate desserts. Added to this, it’s non-cook, can be made the day before, travels well and looks very inviting.

METHOD • Start by making a pineapple puree, with a fresh pineapple and a bunch of mint leaves.

• Next step is to layer your favourite trifle dish, starting with the sturdier fruit, peeled and cut into largish pieces including watermelon, honeydew melon, mango slices, kiwi fruit, sliced peaches and hulled strawberries.

• Then evenly pour over the pineapple puree and top with a mass of blueberries and cover with coconut yoghurt.

Decorate with fresh raspberries, lychees, passionfruit and/or toasted coconut flakes.

• Chill for 4 hours in the fridge or overnight. It’s fresh, pretty to admire, gluten free, dairy free, and full of nutrition.

Pinaroo Park design A consultation process is currently underway for the design of the new Pinaroo Park in the Mowbray precinct.

Council recently reached a partnership with NSW Land and Housing Corporation to acquire six lots in Pinaroo Place.

As a result of the agreement, Council will be providing a 6300m2 recreation space utilising these lots, the Pinaroo Place cul-de-sac and the existing park on Kullah Parade.

The community is now being encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed park design which includes these features: 1. Off-street parking 2. Table tennis 3. Play equipment 4. ‘A bit radical’ Lane Cove Plaza celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Converting the road into a plaza has contributed significantly to our ‘village’ feel, but at the time, it was considered to be quite a radical idea.

F

or those who live and work in Lane Cove, the Plaza is an integral part of daily life. When it opened in 1977, it was the first time in NSW that any part of a suburban main road had been closed to traffic to create a pedestrian mall.

The Plaza was achieved despite ongoing opposition, public meetings and court cases.

The Lane Cove shopping village came about following the extension of the North Shore tramway service from Gore Hill to Longueville (now Lane Cove) in March 1909. The area near the intersection of Burns Bay and Longueville Roads became a tram terminus and the shopping centre developed around the intersection. Trams continued to operate until the closure of the North Shore lines in June 1958. The intersection then became the thoroughfare of cars and heavy trucks, making crossing the road a risky business.

By the late 1960s the local Chamber of Commerce began agitating for improvements to the Lane Cove shopping centre. The area was dusty, noisy and held a few neglected vacant shops. After discussions with shopkeepers, University of NSW final year architecture students studied the area and produced reports, plans and models for public exhibition in 1971. A special committee with community representation was formed and they recommended that Burns Bay Road between Rosenthal Avenue and Longueville Road be converted to a pedestrian mall. Businesses and shoppers were surveyed by Council consultants who recommended the pedestrian mall proceed.

By 1973, Council engineers and planning departments were working through the process of creating a plaza. This involved widening Rosenthal Avenue, planning extra carparking and the logistics of deliveries for businesses. Early in 1974, legislation to close part of the road was introduced to State Parliament. Council’s consultant landscape architect, Harry Howard, was commissioned to prepare a preliminary design.

Permission to close part of Burns Bay Road for a three-month trial period was given, starting 11th November 1974. Following the trial, public opinion was divided with some forming the ‘keep the plaza’ campaign and others active in the ‘against’ side. By 1975 there was a change of management at the Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by a view that “if cars didn’t go past their door, a shop didn’t do any business.”

Council decided to adhere to their decision to retain the plaza, despite petitions against it and objections from the Chamber of Commerce. In 1976 several shopkeepers from

the affected part of Burns Bay Road opposed the closure in the Equity Court and won their case. Council then took the matter to the Court of Appeal, which decided in its favour.

On 24th December 1976, the closure of Burns Bay Road was advertised in the NSW Government Gazette and in 1977 work commenced to construct the plaza to the detailed design completed by Harry Howard the previous year.

On 26th November 1977, the Lane Cove Plaza was officially opened by Mayor Bill Henningham, along with John Dowd, State Member for Lane Cove and John Howard, Federal Member for Bennelong. The program of events on the day included cultural dancing, physical education display, fancy dress, musical bands and choirs and would set the tone for future activities and events.

Local artist Lloyd Rees proposed the addition of a fountain and bandstand. Following discussions, Harry Howard designed the Lloyd Rees Bandstand which was officially opened by Mayor Rosyln Baxter in April 1983. The name ‘Lane Cove Plaza’ was also officially gazetted in 1983.

In the last 40 years, the Plaza has undergone a number of refurbishments to keep it functioning as the heart of the Lane Cove village community.

Judith Felton, Principal of Hunters Hill High, is retiring at the end of the year.

Hunters Hill High Principal to retire After nearly two decades as the school’s leader, Hunters Hill High Principal Judith Felton has decided to retire at the end of the 2017 school year.

Whilst the school’s location is spectacular, located on 6.6 hectares north facing on the Lane Cove River, and blessed with a wonderful community of students, staff and parents, the school has had to negotiate some challenging events and times during Ms Felton’s tenure.

In 2000, fire ravaged its historic hall; during 20012002, the school lived under the threat of closure.

Impressively, these challenges have strengthened the cohesion, spirit and resolve of the community.

Today, an impressive hall and movement studio provides a wonderful resource for the school and its neighbouring primary schools. In a very competitive educational landscape, the school is thriving; its future assured and promising.

As educational leader, Ms Felton’s emphasis has included the development of a positive culture based on strong values, improvement of the school’s infrastructure and resources, enhanced capacity of staff and the promotion of student engagement and achievement. The school’s co-curricular activities are impressive: the creative and performing arts are valued and sport achievement and student citizenship encouraged.

“I have been fortunate to work with a team of passionate educators, hard-working administrative staff, wonderful students and a very active and involved P&C. Every achievement has been a team effort,” said Ms Felton.

In 2018, Hunters Hill High School celebrates its 60th birthday.

Ms Felton is sad that she will not be part of the school’s exciting future; however, in her words, “I am confident that I will leave the school in great shape and in the best of hands. Our students shine in their academic, sporting, cultural and leadership endeavours!”

Congratulations to the new councillors Ben Collins, Elizabeth Krassoi and Jim Sanderson. Also welcome back Councillors Justine McLaughlin, Zac Miles and former Mayor Councillor Ross Williams.

We are fortunate to have a mix of experienced and new councillors with an extensive and impressive range of skills. I am sure they will be great assets to Hunter’s Hill Council over the next three years and make important contributions to our community.

Briefings and education on a range of topics such as the Gladesville Shopping Village Planning Proposal; amendment to the Development Control Plan 2013; Heritage Significance Statements; the Gladesville Commercial Centre Action Plan for Public Domain Improvements, together with councillor workshops organised by the Division of Local Government will take up a lot of Council time in the next few months. Recently I held my annual North Sydney Community Awards. Thank you to the hundreds of local volunteers and their friends and families who came along to our awards ceremony on Friday 15th September.

A win for the community In a major victory for local residents, Lane Cove Council is creating a 6,300m2 park by acquiring six properties in Pinaroo Place.

Following an agreement with the NSW Government, the acquisition will allow the expansion of the existing park at the corner of Kullah Parade and Mindarie Street, creating a large recreational area for the use of locals.

“This new park is ultimately possible due to a partnership approach achieved between NSW Government and Lane Cove Council to deliver infrastructure which is essential for our growing community,” Mr Roberts said.

“It will ensure the residents of the Mowbray Precinct enjoy access to open space which is large enough to cater for the increased population in the precinct.

“Council has an enviable record of delivering new open space for our growing community, with more than 18,000sqm now provided since 2010.

“I acknowledge the level of cooperation and commitment which Clr Hutchens has displayed to facilitate the agreement and I sincerely thank her and Lane Cove Council for their efforts.” Mr Roberts said.

This much-needed open space will cater for the enjoyment of the population, particularly in the Mowbray precinct. It will include large open park area, a basketball court, outdoor table tennis, toilet amenities, events stage, gardens and barbecues.

The transaction involves a land exchange of 1,332sqm of park at Girraween Avenue for an additional 4,055sqm of land currently comprising six single residences at Pinaroo Place.

Council began the acquisition process from NSW Land Housing in 2013, in line with the 2011 JBA Mowbray Road Precinct Master Planning Study.

Council will undertake consultation regarding the design for the expanded park and will seek community input.

Four-way tie for charity golf Pro-Am The Lane Cove Golf Club staged its 27th annual Charity Golf Pro-Am under glorious blue skies and with the course in tiptop condition thanks to the Lane Cove Council and its ground staff. The new footbridge linking the tees to the 4th green was in operation for the first time.

Sydney Community Services (formerly LC&NSCS) is the beneficiary of the ProAm’s proceeds. The Golf Club and its sponsors are very proud of the support they have provided to the Lane Cove community with around $200,000 raised since the event started.

Gill Batt, General Manager of Sydney Community Services, attended the prize presentation and spoke of the organisation’s work in the community and thanked the Club for its support over many years.

The Pro Am gave amateur golfers, both members and guests, a chance to play a round of golf alongside 34 professional golfers.

The professional winners in the 4-way tie were Matthew Millar, Troy Moses, Andrew Evans and James Nitties with scores of 2 under par 62. Matthew Millar won the Porter’s Shootout.

Team event winners were Matthew Millar, Janet Lean, Michael Meade and James Meade.

LCFC ends season on a high!

Another season comes to an end for Lane Cove Football Club, with close to 900 players aged from 5 to 70+ turning out in the blue and gold.

LCFC recently held their Club Day at Blackman Park and players were presented with their trophies and medals.

Team winners Matthew Millar, Janet Lean and Michael Meade with Golf President Brian Doherty.

Over 1,000 games were coordinated across the various competitions with many thousands of spectators braving the cold in support of their children, friends, partners etc.

There were mixed results (as is normal) throughout the Club, but an overwhelming feeling that at the end of the day everyone had fun!

A note should be made of our division winners in the Northern Suburbs Competition, with the Under 18 Mens team taking out the Division 2 title, and the Under 14 Girls taking out the Division 4 title (and being undefeated all season).

The investment in coaching throughout the Club, and in particular the Development Squads (Under 8 – Under 13), is now paying off with Lane Cove teams now regularly appearing at the top of the rankings in these age groups. A great sign for the future strength of the Club in what is becoming an increasingly competitive environment!

A debt of gratitude is owed for all the volunteers across Lane Cove who pull this together year after year.

Marriage: Before you take the big step Preparations to get married or begin a new defacto relationship can be a wonderful and exciting time, with much to plan and prepare.

But there are important things to consider. There are bound to be new financial responsibilities and obligations, particularly if you are bringing substantial assets into the relationship or have responsibilities for children of prior relationships. If you don’t think about these issues, they may come back to haunt you.

Firstly, you should make a Will (or have your existing Will updated) to specify who is to benefit from your estate should you die. This is because if you have a Will and marry, then the existing Will is immediately revoked and you need to do a new one.

If you don’t make a new Will and you die, then your estate is distributed according to the rules of Intestacy. Your spouse receives your assets, or if you have children, your spouse shares the estate with them.

The same applies for a defacto spouse where the relationship has been going for two years or more (or less if there

are children involved). If you don’t have a spouse or children, your estate is distributed to your closest relatives; first parents, then siblings, grandparents and finally aunts and uncles.

If you don’t provide properly for your spouse or children in your Will, then following death, they are eligible to make a ‘Family Provisions Application’ in the Supreme Court. This can cause your relatives or those people you do wish to benefit considerable anguish.

What if the relationship fails?

Following a marriage, your spouse can immediately make a Family Law claim for a share of your property or for maintenance. A defacto spouse qualifies to have the same rights after two years of cohabitation (or earlier if there are children) or if they have made a substantial contribution. Their entitlements may be small at first, but they quickly grow, particularly after children come along.

To prevent some of these problems, you can enter into a Financial Agreement prior to the marriage. This sets out what is to happen to your assets and income in the event of separation or death.

Negotiating such agreements can be a cause of friction and conflict for new couples. However, they are extremely effective in avoiding claims and court actions and protecting your assets.

Entering a new relationship is also a good opportunity to draw up a Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship. If you are unable to make decisions yourself because of illness or injury, you must have made arrangements for persons you most trust to make decisions about your finances and personal care.

Greenwich Village Arts Trail The artists of Greenwich are once again preparing to open their doors to the public for a rare glimpse inside the mysterious spaces of the artist studio.

Greenwich Village Arts Trail has 26 artists this year, including six debutantes - Lynne Podgorski, Geraldine Pratt, Hugh Richardson and Chrys Gourlay, together with new residents Marianne Urth and Jeanette Lamb.

The Open Studio Trail will be held on the first weekend of November, with artworks on display and for sale from 10am-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Born in Denmark surrounded by the North Sea, Marianne has always been connected to the water. She moved to Sydney with her family two years ago after living in Santiago, Chile for two decades. She has happily settled into the beautiful harbourside suburb of Greenwich where the water is never far away.

Marianne is a keen sailor and loves being on the water. It is the movement and the transparency of the waves she seeks to reproduce in her paintings.

But on top of the physicality of the water, she also seeks to convey the companionship and challenges for the crew at sea.

Another artist who recently landed in Greenwich is Jeanette Lamb, whose broad creative journey has taken many

interesting paths, usually producing 'functional art'.

Early in her career, Jeanette enjoyed success as a woodworker, trading dimensional wood artworks, picture frames and jewellery to overseas markets in New Zealand and the UK. She then studied Surface and Textile Design and after gaining the 'award of excellence', Jeanette launched herself down a new creative path.

Jeanette creates abstract and dimensional images merging traditional art with digital art, primarily working in black and white.

She loves the drama of dimension, the subtlety of shading and playing with pattern. She individually hand prints her original artworks onto a variety of surfaces, including clothing and household objects.

Jeanette is introducing a new range of work at the Greenwich Village Arts Trail, inspired by the beautiful local area, and is looking forward to exhibiting these and sharing her work with visitors.

As the pace of life accelerates, why not give art a chance – it might be just the tonic you need.

W

hen art is discussed in a relaxed yet professional way, it can produce an absolute high in the audience. This was certainly the case at Lane Cove Art Society’s August meeting, when it was treated to an absolutely fabulous evening of art courtesy of well-known watercolour artist and teacher, Susie Murphie.

Nothing was laboured. Susie wanted confident, quick and professional watercolours bursting with light, tone and colour.

“Variation is so important to the final work,” remarked Susie. She demonstrated techniques of achieving this outcome and practical tips were also shared generously.

Susie ‘cooks’ her watercolours in the oven at a very low temperature (30-40 degrees) to dry them out on her palette.

The thin skin that forms over them can be broken down with water at any time, but the paint will last so much longer rather than if it is squeezed freshly from the tube.

Mixing was done on a melamine plate. Two colours were put down and a brush mixed the edges of these two colours creating an enormous range of tonal variations with many subtle colour changes.

‘Variation’ was Susie’s mantra. A limited palette was her preferred choice including ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, raw sienna, quinacridone red and quinacridone gold.

“Tone is everything,” chimed Susie. The amount of water loaded up in the brush determines the tonal quality of the mark produced. Less water and more pigment gives a much greater depth of tone than a fully loaded brush. This was the reason Susie had a rag next to her water container, so she could dab water off the brush before filling it with pigment.

It was also why Susie used two brushes when she painted - one for pigment and one purely for water. The water brush swooped in when nuanced tonal variation was required.

The pressure exerted on the brush profoundly influenced the marks made. More pressure results in a thicker mark, as the bristles of the brush flatten out. Details are then added 34 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 267 I OCTOBER 2017

with the tip of the brush, however “too much detail can deaden a watercolour,” Susie cautioned.

The brushes and paper Susie used reflected her no fuss economical approach to her artwork. Bunnings craft section sells the brushes, and the Reeves 300gsm paper was sourced from Spotlight or Eckersley’s art stores. Buying very large tubes of paint is more economical too, so the 37ml size is preferred.

Drawing the subject can be made simpler if the negative shapes are sketched in. If done accurately, the positive shapes of the subject are revealed.

Turning the subject upside down was also a way of letting the brain see the subject in a fresh manner.

Using a 2B pencil both as a guide and measuring tool allowed proportions to be captured correctly.

Susie’s knowledge of watercolour flowed freely throughout the evening’s demonstration, resulting in one of our most enjoyable art presentations to date.

‘THE HARBOUR AND BEYOND’ EXHIBITION David Pavich has been teaching painting and drawing at the Centrehouse studios for over ten years. This year he will exhibit his latest oil paintings created during two residencies, one with Gallery Lane Cove completed last year, and another in the Tweed Regional Galleries’ Nancy Fairfax Studio in 2015.

David’s passion is landscape, in particular the coastlines and ocean views of Sydney and further afield which he has been painting for decades.

For his exhibition ‘The harbour and beyond’, David has concentrated on the harbour foreshores surrounding Lane Cove through to Lavender Bay and Middle Harbour.

“Sydney harbour is a subject I have felt a close attachment to since childhood. Observing the changing light and colour on the harbour through the seasons, as well as all the energy of boating activities has always provided a joyful experience,” explains Pavich.

During a residency in Murwillumbah, David was fascinated by the sheer beauty of the mountainous country. His major focus of the paintings in the exhibition will be based on Mount Warning, which could be clearly seen from the studio. A sacred mountain to the aboriginal people of Bundjalong and site of ceremony, ‘Wollumbin’, the original aboriginal title of Mount Warning, translates to the ‘Cloud Gatherer’. Its monumental form dominates the landscape from most locations around Murwillumbah, making it a most desirable painting subject.

The Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) will be visiting Lane Cove to showcase their latest exhibition, ‘East meets West in miniature.’

The artists use every medium, from oil paint, watercolour and graphite to collage, printmaking, handmade books and sculpture, but the image can be no more than 40 cm in perimeter (ie 10 x 10 cm or similar) and three dimensional work can be no more than 15 cm in any direction.

The history of miniatures as a cultural object has been important throughout Western and Eastern cultures. The early illuminated manuscripts created by the churches throughout Europe were often embellished with gold leaf and exotic colours, while the Persian miniatures of Iran were later influenced by the Chinese after the Mongol rule in the 13th century.

Contemporary artists continue the practice, creating beautiful works that are small in size, requiring great detail and skill. Preserving Lane Cove’s Natural Heritage The Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society (LCBCS) is not a bush regeneration group, as is often thought, but generally achieves its aims through active cooperation with Council bodies. This includes writing submissions, lobbying and through participation in a variety of environment and planning decision-making bodies and fun events.

LCBCS welcomes the recent election to Council of its long term, active member Frances Vissel.

LCBCS’s aim is to preserve the biodiversity of the natural heritage of Lane Cove municipality by means of conservation and the proper management of the natural bushland, wet lands and aquatic ecosystems, both for their intrinsic value and for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

They also represent locally the wider concerns expressed in Australia and internationally for the protection of the natural environment, and where appropriate, take action to express support. Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch is an active subcommittee of the Society.

The success of the Society, which started in 1971, may be seen in the greening of Lane Cove. This is a status quo that has required ongoing vigilance by dedicated local members. Vigilance is essential now, even moreso, due to the increasing population imposed on Lane Cove and changes to NSW planning policies.

For over 40 years, LCBCS’s oversight of developments adjoining bushland has been crucial in maintaining buffer zones for nature. The Society is often alone in making early representations to Council and alerting the community. Can you help us to continue to guard this legacy?

At the 2016 census, the Lane Cove municipality’s population

increased by 14.41 per cent (from the 2011 census), significantly higher than the 8.8 per cent national average total population growth of Australia for the same period (ABS figures).

However, during this time, inept, knee-jerk ‘Code 10/50’ changes by the NSW Government allowed self-assessment for the removal of trees and led to the loss of hundreds of local trees, species unaccounted for, and records not kept by Council.

In 2016, LCBCS’s submission on proposed changes to NSW Biodiversity and Conservation laws argued against the Repeal the Native Vegetation Act 2003 and Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 – as these Acts are important laws that led to a significant decrease in land clearing and habitat loss.

One reason the Society has consistently opposed the forced amalgamation of our Council, is to preserve funding for our environment. It is estimated Ryde Council spends half that of Lane Cove Council on maintaining its bushland, although Ryde has approximately double our bushland area.

The Society meets at 7.30 - 9pm, every second Tuesday of the month (except January) at the Lane Cove Tennis Club, Longueville. We encourage you to come along!

Cyclone Irma Former North Shore resident Fiona Wilson moved to Trinidad five years ago where she operates a B&B, Casa Los Mangos, with her husband Ossiel.

Fiona writes about living through recent Cyclone Irma - a Category 5 storm and the first Cuba has had since 1932.

6am, September 7th: Our beautiful little piece of paradise is

being destroyed before our eyes. Irma arrived at 5.00am, just as the weatherman had predicted. We had a bit of rain overnight but nothing that indicated the cyclone was on its way.

The animals have been terrified and us horrified at the thud of avocadoes on the roof. We have lost our beautiful chirimoya (custard apple) and a number of our large, older avocado trees.

The pergola, covered in passionfruit, has been flattened by a large avocado branch. There will be few, if any, banana trees left.

We heard the sound of a roof being ripped off nearby and think it might be the fruit and vegetable market on the edge of our property.

10.30am: The winds continue in terrifying gusts swooshing

around in circles, snapping branches and sending the fruit and smaller branches flying through the air.

The house is holding up with just a few leaks. I keep reassuring myself that it has been standing for over 100 years and has withstood similar or worse cyclonic storms.

I guess it is a blessing that the storm came in the daylight so we can see what is happening, rather than relying on our imagination. It is, however, very sad to be witnessing the destruction of our beautiful garden that has been in the making now for four years.

11.30am: The torrential rain has started, in competition it would

seem with the wind, to do as much destruction as possible. There is not much light inside or out so I can’t even read.

The cyclone remains to the north of us and it is a category 5 storm, now moving along very slowly. The winds and rain we are experiencing could continue for another 24 hours. Some of the avocado bombs have cracked tiles on the roof above our bedroom and our bed is now half soaked.

4.30pm: The storm is worse than ever. The wind seems to have increased and the rain is falling in every direction. I rang a friend who tells me that the cyclone is now headed for Havana, creeping along the north coast.

It appears that our garden has been completely destroyed. The only trees still standing are the mangoes.

The banana trees are mashed on the ground and all the other fruit trees have toppled over at weird angles or snapped off.

I don’t hold out much hope for the survival of our chickens as the wind and rain is coming from all directions.

We have more leaks in the roof but it is still attached to the house, which is more than can be said for some of our neighbours if I’m guessing correctly about the noise of metal bashing about outside.

9.00am, September 8th:

The cyclonic storm ceased at 7.00am. 26 hours of howling winds and heavy rain. We managed to sleep through the night but were woken very early by frogs outside our door looking for sanctuary. I let the pets out so they could pee when the rain stopped for awhile and to establish just how much destruction had taken place.

The ground is just covered in avocadoes and branches.

Think of 1kg hail stones and you get the picture. It amazes me that they didn’t break more of our roof tiles. You can tell the force when you find them half lodged in the mud that was our herb garden.

The chickens survived, all of them. Practically a miracle

we think and later today I saw a hummingbird which surprised and delighted me.

The rains and winds continue throughout the day stalling the clean-up. A truck passes with a loud speaker warning everyone that the winds will continue and to be aware of broken limbs lodged in the trees.

I walked into town today to get access to Wi-Fi. The town is very quiet and I think everyone is still in shock and worrying about what the immediate future holds. Cyclones like this one can bring hunger to many rural communities and shortages of fruits, vegetables and coffee are certain.

All our friends, family and staff are alive and well. Few were as well prepared with candles, firewood or kerosene, as they could/should have been.

Cubans have grown used to a regular electricity supply.

Whereas they once cooked over wood or fuel stoves, now most people use electric pressure cookers and electric hot plates.

Very few Cubans have generators and solar power is rare.

Needless to say, a generator and an electric chainsaw have now been added to our shopping list.

A LETTER TO OUR NEW COUNCILLORS Lane Cove Council has a different makeup after the elections, with more Independents, fewer Liberals, and one Labor representative. Whatever their associations, we trust that they will hold to the commitments they made at the ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum, which was held prior to the election.

Following a presentation by the principal candidate from each group at the forum, it was opened to questions from the floor. There were a number of questions from the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society, and these were published in our article in the August edition of the TVO (‘Question Time for Council Candidates’).

To our great delight, all of the candidates rejected support for council amalgamations in the future. There was a commitment to maintain, and in some cases, expand the green space and bushland budget. All candidates committed to keeping the Lloyd Rees bandstand in place, rather than supporting an unwelcome call to remove it, which created much opposition in the May edition of the TVO.

Although much of the pressure for unit development in Lane Cove is coming from the State Government in its agenda of development, the candidates recognised that the residents of Lane Cove feel enough is enough and that further unit development should be contained.

These opinions expressed at the forum were confirmed by most, but not all of the candidates in their responses to a questionnaire put to them by the Society.

We welcome the newly elected councillors and we look forward to working cooperatively with them on important initiatives such as Council’s Bushland Management Advisory Committee and the Bush Kids program.

And we look forward to them honouring the commitments that we welcomed at the forum.
