It is always interesting to hear what attracts new businesses to Lane Cove.

Several new cafes and restaurants have opened this year after their owners ‘discovered’ Lane Cove, with no previous association with the area.

The reason that they choose to start their business here is the point of difference that Lane Cove offers with its village atmosphere, the appeal of its demographics, and the opportunity that comes with this.

The leap of faith that is involved as they commit to this community, invest in starting their new business and fit out their chosen site cannot be underestimated. This year alone we’ve had Lillah, The Alcott, Kasina, La Provence, Louisiane, Guzman Gomez and Four Frogs Creperie. In November, we welcome another new restaurant – Little Red Robin – whose owners Alessandro and Michelle came across Lane Cove in their search for a location for their business and were immediately drawn to its village vibe and friendliness.

Closing off traffic and running a huge table down Gladesville Road for people to dine together under the stars was a radical idea when the Hunters Hill Street Feast was trialled four years ago. Little Red Robin flies into Birdwood Lane Final preparations are being made for the launch of an exciting new restaurant in midNovember.

Big plans for Coles site The community consultation period for a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) for the Coles site at 56-60 Burns Bay Road has now closed.

Council received a Development Application for the site in late September.

The developer, Sun Property Lane Cove Pty Ltd (SPLC), is seeking consent for the construction of a multi-storey mixed use residential development and commercial building.

The DA includes 22 residential apartments with car spaces (5 studios; 6 onebedroom; 9 two-bedroom and 2 three-bedroom); a 1600m2 supermarket; a 165m2 restaurant; a 440m2 commercial space and a proposed 750m2 community space plus lobby area.

As part of its proposal, SPLC has made a request to acquire 728sqm of Council’s adjoining land (which is currently used for carparking) for integration into the redevelopment.

Council has proposed entering into a Voluntary Planning Agreement with the developer, to facilitate the integration of Council’s land and utilise the value to provide a public benefit in the form of community space, better pedestrian connections and public car parking.

Council has received numerous submissions from residents and businesses regarding the development. Concerns raised include the façade being out of character and scale with the remainder of the Village; any loss of carparking and its impact on residents and surrounding businesses; concerns around the retention of existing trees on the site; and the impact of the building work to surrounding businesses.

Now that the community consultation period has closed, Council will review and evaluate comments before making its determination on the VPA.

Council to write to Minister The State Government has recently prepared, but is yet to release, a draft Land Use Infrastructure Plan (LUIIP) that covers the greater Crows Nest/ St Leonards area.

On this basis, Council has deferred consideration of any planning for St Leonards South until after the LUIIP is released.

Council will write to the Minister of Planning, the Hon Anthony Roberts MP, and the Premier, the Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP, and request that they introduce changes that prevent lodgement of developer or landowner initiated planning proposals for the St Leonards South Master Plan while existing State and/ or Local Government planning studies or proposals are being development or considered.

Council has also requested that the consultation period in relation to the St Leonards and Crows Nest 2036 Draft Plan be extended by 16 weeks until 4th February 2019.

Little Red Robin, located in the former site of Pizza Hut in Birdwood Lane, will be an intimate 39-seater restaurant offering traditional Mediterranean recipes presented in a modern way.

Owners Alessandro Nelli and Michelle Warren had been looking for the ideal location to start their new business when they discovered Lane Cove. They really liked its village feel, the friendliness of the locals and the mix of businesses already here.

Little Red Robin promises to be another great addition to the local dining scene, with an award-winning chef; smart new fitout; interesting Mediterranean influenced menu, and eclectic wine list.

The couple have secured award-winning chef Claudio Zannotti, who was a top 5 finalist for the Good Food Guide’s Young Chef of the Year in 2017. Italian-born, Claudio has previously worked at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant & Bar and Michelin-starred Locando Locatelli in London. He is also a certified sommelier.

Council to sell 22 Rosenthal Avenue The proprietors of Unwined Espresso Bar have approached Council to purchase the site which they have tenanted at 22 Rosenthal Avenue since 2011.

Following an independent valuation, Council has now agreed to sell the site as it is not considered strategic and is not required for the Rosenthal project.

From the proceeds raised from the sale, Council intends investigating the possibility of acquiring the site at 162 Longueville Road, which is currently occupied by Ray White.

This is considered a strategic location, as it would complete Council’s ownership of the entire block from the Living and Learning Centre through to Central Avenue, providing them with greater capacity to expand upon their community service delivery.

HSC is more than a number

This simple but thoughtful gesture was his way of giving these students credit for an achievement which wasn’t linked to the mark they were to receive, but rather on the effort and work it had taken to complete this stage of their education.

We see the beaming faces of the top scoring students in the media each year. Rightly they receive the praise and attention they have worked so hard for. However for many students, the disappointment of a target mark not achieved can be crushing and the cause of so much unnecessary heartbreak and loss of self-esteem.

So often we link our sense of worth to the achievement or acquisition of something. However there is a danger that if we don’t meet our aims, we label ourselves failures. Rather we could focus on what we have achieved and how we can refocus and re-direct our efforts in ways that will serve us better so that we can be fulfilled and live a life of purpose.

As parents, our role is to support our children and encourage them to be the best they can be. To be autonomous, confident, and compassionate adults and to pursue a career path that is their own - one that will provide fulfilment and satisfaction.

Each year when I hear the HSC exams have begun, I reflect on what a stressful time it was for my two children, both now in their late 20’s. Midway through my daughter’s exams, I met a gentleman who shared a wonderful piece of his wisdom.

Every year he would call any young people he knew who were undertaking the HSC, on the last day of their exams. His purpose was to heartily congratulate them on completing their school years.

The HSC mark is not who they are or who they will be in the future. Certainly it’s a landmark in their life, but it will not be the only one.

The greatest gift we can give our children is to have faith in them, support them in their decisions and ensure they know and feel they are loved every step of the way.

Neither of my children achieved the HSC results they aimed for. They were disappointed of course, but today they are two adults I am so proud of - not because of the jobs they do, where they live or what they own, but who they are as whole and wonderful human beings. 

Lane Cove Remembers Lane Cove Council has organised a range of initiatives to commemorate the Centenary of the Armistice of World War One. Audio Guide Did you know the names of over 20 streets and places in the Lane Cove area have been named after people who have a connection to World War One? Find out the streets and their connection via a specially prepared audio guide. A red poppy will be fixed to the street signs at these locations from November.

In The Plaza You are invited to write a message of remembrance as part of a special large poppy installation in Lane Cove Plaza. Write your message and place it within the poppy as part of this commemoration project in the heart of Lane Cove.

New Signal Box Artwork A new artwork will adorn the signal box on the corner of Burns Bay Road and Centennial Avenue. The piece reflects the community’s connection to wars, conflict and peace operations.

Remembrance Day Service In conjunction with the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch, a Remembrance Day service will commence at 10:45am on Sunday 11 November in Lane Cove Plaza. If it’s raining, the service will be held at Lane Cove Library.

Free History Talk Join Graeme Davis from the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch and principal of Family Military History as he discusses the Armistice and the implications it would have on a brave new world.

Jason Moufarrege EYES ON LANE COVE In 2001, Jason Moufarrege was visiting relatives when he decided to make a detour and drive up Longueville Road.

He came across the local village, stopped for lunch and had a walk around.

In a theme shared by many local business owners who decide to set up in Lane Cove, Jason really liked the atmosphere here and saw potential to open his own practice.

Planets aligned when an optician decided to sell their business located at the corner of Lane Cove Arcade on Longueville Road. Jason bought the business and rebranded it as Eyes on Lane Cove. He expanded with a second store, Eyes 4 You, in the Woolworths Lane Cove Market Square in 2009.

We’re operating within an industry which is now dominated by corporate owned stores and franchises. As an independent retailer, I have to remain competitive, so I am always looking at what my competitors are doing to make sure that we’re offering the best service, product range and price to our customers.

What do you enjoy about running your own business?

I’m a people person. I love to talk and socialise, so meeting and helping my clients gives me real satisfaction. As the owner of the business, customers usually ask to see me.

Whereas franchises don’t know their customers, I’m all about giving personalised service and making clients feel comfortable.

Describe your target market?

Usually people start needing prescription glasses when they reach their early 40’s, though we have frames to suit everybody - from children through to the elderly - and we also cater to a range of budgets. Over 80% of our clients are from the local area.

Glasses are such a fashion statement, so I’m constantly looking at trends and sourcing unique and different stock when attending tradeshows, locally and internationally. We stock over 1500 frames across our two stores. Metal, round frames are making a comeback and are the big trend in Europe. It will probably take another 6-12 months before that style hits the Australian market though I already have some of these metal frames available in-store.

How would you describe the current business environment?

It’s tough at the moment. As well as our overheads, we are highly committed to re-investing in the latest diagnostic equipment and product offerings.

My business can only survive when people choose to shop locally, which is why my customers are so important to me.

We always strive to provide the best quality service and be competitive to ensure highly satisfied customers, with an opportunity that they recommend us to their friends and relatives.

I love Lane Cove and running a business here and I look forward to continuing to serve the local community.

A night under the stars Now in its fourth year, Hunters Hill Street Feast is a highlight on the community calendar, bringing friends, neighbours and family together under a canopy of lights, trees and stars.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

From Lane Cove to Ladakh and beyond In 2014 when some Lane Cove mums chatted about needing a break from the constant demands of work and family life, it was lucky that Sarah Hoyland, Director of the Classic Safari Company and long-term Lane Cove resident, was amongst them.

From there Sarah built a trip for eighteen women to India based round Holi, where they celebrated the famous Festival of Colours in true style with the locals. Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, side trips to Jaipur and Mumbai, and special access to an ancient fire ceremony on the Ganges were also included.

The whole experience was full of colour, laughter and life, amplified by social media throughout Sydney and further afield. And the idea of the Secret Women’s Series was born.

Since this first Holi trip, Sarah has created unique experiences for dozens of women from Lane Cove and beyond. Her boutique travel company designs bespoke journeys to Africa, the Indian Subcontinent and Latin America, to places you only read about in story books.

But Sarah knows the key is much more than just breathtaking destinations you’ve only ever dreamed of.

“Our special edge has always been creating uplifting tours, designed by women, for women and about women. Whether it’s immersing our clients into women’s collectives, visiting local schools or joining traditional cooking classes, we know what makes them tick and we do it in style.”

Sarah is now busy designing other female focused trips, including an upcoming literary ‘Indian Tales’ tour with Jennifer Byrne; and a ‘Spice Up Your Life’ food safari with chef Christine Manfield. A textiles-focussed tapestry tour through Peru with former Lane Cove resident and home stylist Megan Morton is also on the cards, plus longer-term plans for other escorted tours with her. Sarah has also worked extensively with Australian designer Camilla to develop inspiration for her prints.

“As a busy working mother, I get that our clients move heaven and earth to carve out time from their hectic schedules.

There’s nothing we don’t think of to make our Secret Women’s Series seamless, incredible life changing experiences.”

Sarah’s myriad network across the world also provides first class local support when you need it. A chance opportunity with one connection brought her face-to-face with the Dalai Lama in remote Ladakh in north west India earlier this year.

A five-day journey and strenuous passport security were well worth it to experience that moment. She and her sixteen-year old daughter Eliza were dumbstruck.

Sarah’s family has travelled all over the world with her. But she’s a stickler for detail and will only design a trip if she’s confident with the offer.

“I have been lucky enough to travel extensively through Africa, South America, the Middle East, India and beyond. It’s only by seeing and experiencing it all first-hand that I’m willing to curate and promote the experiences for others.”

Despite her frequent and exotic trips, Sarah’s only too happy to return to Lane Cove where she and her family have lived for eighteen years.

“The chance to travel so widely is fantastic, but I love coming home. Lane Cove has been a fabulous place to live and raise our girls. Everyone who lives here is so friendly and happy – and who could blame them? The sense of community is truly extraordinary.” 

Nine Perfect Strangers RICH PATTERN

Family Party Mix I'm trialling a new method of avoiding conflict about household jobs with my family. It's basically just ignoring them.

In the past, when feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of casually kicked-off shoes in the living room or screwdrivers on the kitchen bench, I used to blow my stack. Now, I leave them to pile up until I can't stand it anymore, when they all get swept up and thrown en masse into the relevant person's room. (A truly aggravating side effect of this approach is the sarcastic eye roll accompanying the droll 'calm down Mum', but still, needs must).

The only alternative to this is to A) tidy away everyone else's stuff yourself, or B) nag. A) is effective but leaves me grumpy and resentful. B) is totally ineffective and leaves everyone grumpy and resentful.

I'm reminded of a hilarious clip on YouTube by comedian Troy Kinne. His girlfriend is ranting about having to do all the domestics as well as work full time, cook the dinner etc while he reclines on the couch. Happily he shows her his secret - a 'magic' laundry basket.

“I don't know how it happens, but somehow, the next day, dirty clothes are just clean and folded!” he says.

“You're not serious,” says his girlfriend, staring at him.

“I couldn't believe it at first either!” he exclaims. “I would have told you sooner, but I didn't want to jinx it!”

There must be some magic afoot, because when I move around putting away other people's stuff, I'm invisible. But as soon as it comes to throwing anything out, my haul is spotted from fifty metres.

Anything put out for the council clean-up just boomerangs straight back inside. When I put out some leftover carpet from a renovation ten years ago, my husband went right back outside and brought it back in. He'll even check through all the rubbish bags I've filled (but only once they're outside).

Maggie Dent, the childhood educator and one-time busy single mum of four boys quickly realised chores like washing were in fact never ending. Including steps like folding and ironing just created more backlog and took up precious time.

So instead she would dump all the clean washing on the spare single bed, like a giant pick 'n' mix.

I love that idea. The magic laundry basket and coffee table remain elusive on eBay, but I could turn the spare room into a Family Party Mix. All I need to do is close the door.  14 TVO NOVEMBER 2018

The first one I read was What Alice Forgot - a hilarious, yet poignant picture of how we can change between our dewy-eyed 20s and the demands of the family-driven 40s.

Moriarty delivers a perfect portrait of playground politics and competitive parenting and how easy it is to forget what matters as we forge ahead ticking the boxes on our oversized to-do lists.

Then there’s the grittier reality of Big Little Lies (now an award-winning TV series) which explores domestic abuse, playground bullying and the judgement of other parents.

In Moriarty’s latest novel Nine Perfect Strangers, her varied characters are all in pain and searching for answers. Moriarty is a genius at drawing character - unique, whole individuals with pasts and dreams and self-delusions, responding to their circumstances and the people around them.

As a resident of Sydney’s suburbs, where so many of her novels are set, it is particularly special to recognize my world and my community in her novels. Moriarty’s new novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, demonstrates again her gift for character, but this time takes the story outside the suburban setting.

Nine people are brought together to participate in a 10day transformational health and wellbeing program at Tranquillum House in the northwest of NSW. There’s Frances, a romance writer in her 50s, battling a failing career, a broken heart and menopausal symptoms. Ben and Jessica are a young couple struggling to save their failing marriage. The Marconi family are bruised and broken by devastating loss.

Lars Lee, a charming divorce lawyer, is facing the potential breakdown of his own relationship. Carmel is an exhausted mother of four whose self-esteem is crumbling in the wake of her recent divorce. And Tony, a lonely, ageing, formerly famous AFL star who has lost all sense of meaning and purpose.

As this eclectic group come together to try and change their lives in some significant way, we are introduced to Masha, the self-styled guru who runs the resort, with her own secret past and a radical plan for her guests. As Masha pushes to effect transformation in her guests, the action escalates beyond anything the nine could anticipate.

But for me, this almost caricatured megalomaniac visionary, Masha; her slave-like assistant, Yao; and the ‘transformational program’ which crosses all boundaries, are just not convincing.

I didn’t love this book as much as some of Moriarty’s previous novels, but there is still a lot to enjoy. In her classic style, the characters are engaging and largely sympathetic.

Tranquillum House is the 21st century’s answer to the monastic retreat where food is limited, alcohol is banned and silence is mandated. Lost individuals willingly put their lives and independence in the hands of questionably qualified practitioners. Moriarty’s take on the wellness retreat, and what attracts us to it, is both hilarious and terrifying . 

I stood before the prison that had been her ‘home’. I seethed at the negligence, then my vision blurred. I couldn’t go on.

I had to do this and then I would never have to deal with this place again.

I wiped my eyes and walked in.

I was shown two garbage bags slumped in a corner; just so much rubbish.

Was everything there?

What about her watch? Damn them!

The unbagged items were a jigsaw of Mum’s life on the floor, the pieces floating together on a gentle stream of tears.

I left the nursing home. No one noticed.

She didn’t want to get her new jeans wet – it was a special day after all.

Arriving in Brisbane, upon exiting the aircraft, I slipped on my sunnies which had been in the top pocket of my jacket.

Straight away, I noticed something strange with the light but put it down to the change from the aircraft to the terminal. I approached the rental desk and chatted with a vivacious young lady. Ten minutes later, I left to find my car.

Stepping into the bright sunshine I realized the trick of the light was in fact caused by ONE lens having fallen out of my sunnies! Goodness knows what that young lady was thinking about me!

She bounded through the scrub, the searching spotlight showing her desperate flight for safety. In a single action, the doe kangaroo flung her tiny joey into thick bushes.

The men in the ute did not notice, and careered onwards, swerving around logs and trees. The animal instinctly led them away from her young.

A wire fence loomed close. With a striding leap, she cleared the fence and disappeared into dense scrub, away from the men and their rifles.

Much later, with danger over, she hopped back. With animal instinct, her joey was found. Together again, they melted into the night.

“Come in,” she replied.

The gathered guests at the party fell completely silent and shuffled nervously, all eyes now drawn to the situation unfolding. Not only had the young man started something intended to be comically intriguing, he had also just revealed the first person in history who didn’t understand the very fundamentals of the most average and oft used joke construct of all time.

The young woman continued to stare at the man, who had broken into a nervous sweat.

The party quickly dissipated, unsure of how, or even why, to continue.

The drystone walling ends, the scene changes. Muddy farm entrances appear, with the authentic, organic smell of the land. Thatched roof cottages, a redundant water wheel stationary in the shadows of a centuries old Norman church. An ancient graveyard, displaced headstones with weathered names and dates. So many died so young. The manor house is signposted and there the inevitable ‘pub’, wonderfully named, evolved from a former coach house, imagination discerning the distant echo of the blacksmith’s hammer, of sparking hooves and trundling wheels. But we are mere observers of this rural idyll, this former other world, this English village.

Baby love When it comes to diet during early pregnancy, most people know folic acid, healthy food and lots of greens are crucial.

But what’s less known is how your diet affects the growing foetus.

Paediatric nutrition is about setting up good food behaviours from an early age.

Did you know that babies’ taste buds are already starting to develop around eight weeks?

What Mum eats when pregnant can set your predilection for life. If she enjoyed spicy food, the chances are you will too.

Likewise with fresh vegetables, peanut and jam sandwiches or whatever tastes – or weird cravings – she went through during those nine months.

With breastfeeding, there is even more exposure. Research shows that kids who are breastfed adapt a bigger palate and like more certain foods to begin with than kids who aren’t breastfed.

I'm one of those nutritionists who says “don't restrict yourself, your body will tell you what it needs”, but seasonal food contains the highest amount of vitamins, so it makes sense to take advantage of them.

The more foods you expose children to from an appropriate age, the easier it is for parents to introduce them. For example, if you’ve been eating sweet potato, brussel sprouts and broccoli 16 TVO NOVEMBER 2018

while pregnant and/or breastfeeding, then your baby is already familiar with them when you introduce solids. Their taste buds will already be a bit sensitised and receptive to them – and likewise with other food. But if it’s completely alien, it may take longer for your child to accept the food.

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again

There are some really nice books around. One is called Eat The Rainbow, where kids can learn which colours all the fruits and vegetables are.

Be patient. You see parents getting frustrated when children don’t like or play with their food, but research says it can take up to 14 times until a child will accept a certain food. So you should always offer it, even if they don't like it.

Don't force it Let children feel the texture of food – be that in their mouth, fingers or hands. These kinds of things are really important because it is also how they explore their sensory system. Kids have a really good sense of resistance and know how much they can eat, so don't fall into the trap of saying “finish

Always introduce your foods in a playful way

Be a role model It’s important to always have meal times together where possible – and to eat healthy food with lots of vegetables.

MEDITATION Research has demonstrated a wide range of benefits of regular meditation. It is now becoming more mainstream, practised in hospitals, schools, yoga centres and other community venues.

Meditation is a practice where a person trains the mind in a particular way.

There are a large variety of meditation techniques. Some are designed to induce a particular state of mind such as relaxation or compassion; some are designed to focus the mind on a single point; and others are designed to increase non-judgemental awareness of all present-moment experiences.

Meditation affects our thoughts, feelings, body physiology, and even changes the structure of our brain.

Brain scans of regular meditators have shown that the amygdala (the part of the brain involved in the ‘fight or flight’ + stress response) shrinks with regular meditation. The impact of this can be a reduction in anxiety, stress and emotional reactivity. Meditation

activates our parasympathetic nervous system - or our natural relaxation response - affecting heart rate, breathing and brain waves.

Benefits of meditation Meditation has been shown to help with physical, mental and emotional wellbeing in a number of different ways.

A simple introduction to meditation practice is to sit in a comfortable position and take 5 or 10 deep breaths, with an attitude of curiosity about the physical sensations associated with taking those breaths through your nose, mouth and body. You may also wish to download a mindfulness or meditation app onto your phone.

BULLYING Lately I’ve seen the effects of bullying at school and in the workplace on some of my young and adult patients.

Any social interaction where one party thinks they have power over another may become a bullying one. When needs are not met, outcomes not achieved, personalities are clashing, or where there is some dissatisfaction with another individual, the first weapon to use and the worst one to choose to induce change is bullying.

It’s seen in the armed forces, aged care facilities, by landlords, clients, neighbors – you name it.

I’ve used articles by Prof. John Murtagh and online resources such as Beyond Blue and Reachout for this article. Do look them up, and others, for a more comprehensive view of this enormous problem. This article is just a taster.

Bullying is a pernicious behavior that persists in our culture, and most others. It can be very subtle and deniable by the bullier.

GP’s may see and detect the effects of bullying, but it’s psychologists and psychiatrists along with loving family particularly family elders – together with time and forgiveness that does the healing.

Elements of the descriptions below apply to both young people and adults.

What is bullying?

Beyond Blue lists verbal and emotional bullying including name calling, put downs, threats, teasing, ridiculing, intimidating and stalking.

Next is physical bullying. Punching, tripping, kicking, stealing, destroying another’s property and unwanted kissing, touching or sexual threatening.

Social bullying includes rumors being spread, being ignored, being left out.

“Being sent to Coventry” as the Brits say.

Cyber bullying is a socially new and generally vicious form of bullying in today’s world. Multiple media can be used to denigrate, humiliate, tell false stories, publish intimate photos, tease, make fun of and generally decimate a person - usually the young but also adults. An example is Donald Trump on Twitter!

Bullying is really being judged by another in a Kafkaesque manner designed by the perpetrator to crush the spirit of that person.

Bullies are cowards who have usually been bullied themselves.

Learning how to stand up to them assertively is the best way forward.

How common is bullying?

Research suggests that bullying is common and widespread says Prof.

Murtagh. It is on the increase and prevalent in every school worldwide.

One study showed that 50% of bullied children told nobody about it! They just suffered alone. Many bullied adults do the same. Another estimate is that 50% of the workforce face bullying at some time in their career. Complaining raises the fear of being accused of being a ‘whistle blower’ and of being ‘managed out’ as a troublemaker.

The bullying culture The multiple forces of downsizing, economic rationalism, increased competition, and a ‘macho’ management style by those in power are all precursors to a bullying atmosphere and thus to a toxic workplace.

He mentions ‘nerds’ or ‘bookworms’; teacher’s pets; those that struggle with their schoolwork; those that are different in some way eg. overweight or with a disability of some kind; those poor at sport; the loners; those with poor social skills; those who are anxious or ‘nervy’; those who are physically smaller or weaker; those from different social or cultural groups; and those thought to be ‘gay’.

For adults, it is workers who are quiet, passive, naïve or ‘different’ in some way.

Sometimes those who want to bring change or who challenge ‘the system’. In contrast, high achievers can be the target by the jealous or incompetent.

What is the effect on victims?

The possible effects are multiple. Prof.

Murtagh’s list is definitive for children.

School phobia; sham sickness; being tense, tearful and miserable after school; reluctant to discuss the school day; changing eating habits; functional symptoms such as a cough or troublesome skin conditions; repeated abdominal pain; unexplained bruises or scratches; torn clothing or damaged books, and more.

Adults may have concentration problems; headaches; migraines; stress and anxiety; insomnia; depression; anxiety and more.

What to do?

First of all, talk. Bring the problem to a head and do not be afraid. Speak with teachers, parents, school counsellors and the Principal. Workplace employees have seniors, bosses, or OH&S departments to turn to. Your GP can help with psychologist and psychiatrist referrals if needed. 

PREGNANCY PLANNING Preconception health undoubtedly has an important role to play in the outcomes of pregnancies.

Today in Australia, there is unfortunately a high incidence of asthma, allergy, obesity, autism and less than ideal health conditions amongst children.

Ms Kirsty Wade, a Clinical Nutritionist at Wades Wellness Chemist, says that preconception planning should start before pregnancy.

“Ideally, if you can start 4 months before conception it will assist to balance the gut and increase tissue reserves of essential minerals and vitamins for the biochemistry of the body to perfectly produce that miraculous baby.

“When you consider that the Australian Dietary Survey reports that 70% of Australians are deficient in key nutrients in their diet, you begin to realise how important considering a nutritionist is before conception,” says Kirsty.

Pregnancy planning comprises several key aspects of diet and lifestyle: • Absorbing sufficient micro-nutrients (gut health should be investigated if indicated).

• Minimising exposure to environmental pollutants and body products that contain nasties that can be absorbed through your skin.

• Giving up cigarettes and wine (abstinence for smoking, but alcohol is OK in moderation up until the month before conception).

• Maintaining a composed work/life balance with reduced stress. Meditate, exercise, swim, socialise and bank sleep while you can!

• Generating a healthy, energetic physical state, free of chronic illness and 'niggles’. These might involve fatigue, pain, or abdominal bloating. If you have any of these, then consult your Naturopath or Nutritionist.

The most recent Australian Health Survey shows that one in six Australian couples are infertile! If that’s not shocking enough, it also relates specific chronic diseases to nutrient deficiencies.

Effective nutrition strategies involve more than just ensuring you have enough micronutrients. Some tablets claim that you need only take one tablet a day for all your preconception needs this is not a reliable solution.

BRUXISM

Most people are affected by bruxism, although not all people generate enough stresses to cause damage.

What is the cause of bruxism?

The cause of bruxism is not at all clear. It is an involuntary sleep disorder, although it has also been linked to medications and allergies. Stress and anxiety are widely known to exacerbate bruxism.

How does it cause damage?

Teeth wear down after years of nocturnal teeth grinding. Once the hard outer layer of the teeth (enamel) is worn through, the rate of wear accelerates because the exposed underlying dentine has little resistance to acid erosion and further physical wear. This

How can I prevent damage from bruxism?

Bruxism also causes gum recession and abfractions. This refers to loss of tooth substance near the gum line (which often feels like ridges) and it can lead to sensitivity and increased susceptibility to acid erosion and tooth decay. Abfractions are easily repaired with simple bonding of colour-matched composite resins.

Teeth can also fracture as a result of bruxism forces, resulting in the requirement for treatment or at worst, extraction and replacement of split teeth.

TMJ dysfunction Bruxism can damage the TMJ (jaw joint), resulting in ear-ache pain, clicking of the joints and limited jaw

The most common treatment for bruxism is an occlusal splint, or night-guard.

They are small plastic appliances worn at night to keep the teeth apart. They eliminate further wearing, abfraction, gum recession and fracturing. Also, the thickness of the splint has a positive effect on unloading stresses on the TMJ. Splints often also work well to alleviate morning headaches.

Another effective treatment is muscle relaxing injections into the jaw muscles.

This can have a profound effect on the amount of force those muscles can exert and therefore control the amount of damage which is done. In the process, headaches and facial tension are often resolved as well. 

If the property is sold with a non-compliant pool, the purchaser has 90 days from settlement to undertake necessary repairs.

This requirement doesn’t apply to properties in strata schemes with more than two lots, or for off-the-plan contracts.

• If building work has been carried out to your property within the past six years, a certificate of insurance for the work may need to be attached to the contract. This will either be the builder’s certificate of insurance, or the certificate of insurance you have obtained as an owner-builder. If any work has been carried out to your property without council approval, you may need to obtain a building certificate in relation to the work.

Tips and traps to consider Whilst professionals such as real estate agents and solicitors can take care of the majority of the work for you, there are some points you should be aware of before taking the plunge into the property market.

Tips for vendors • You can’t market your property until a Contract for Sale of Land has been drafted and provided to your real estate agent.

There are many documents that need to be attached to the contract and not all documents are immediately available, so you should have your contract drafted as soon as possible.

• If your property has a swimming pool, you’ll need either a certificate of compliance or certificate of non-compliance to say whether or not the pool and/or the barrier meet

• Make sure your finance is in place before making an offer or attending the auction. Once the deposit is paid and contracts are exchanged, binding obligations are created which can result in serious repercussions if you’re not able to complete the contract.

• For private treaty residential purchases, a 5-business day cooling-off period applies during which the purchaser can undertake inspections, finalise finance arrangements and withdraw from the purchase for minimum penalty. If you buy at auction, there is no cooling-off period and the contract becomes immediately binding. Private treaty vendors can also insist that potential purchasers agree to waive the cooling-off period.

• Depending on the nature of the property, it may be appropriate to order pest and building inspections and a strata report.

• Don’t forget to factor in transfer (stamp) duty. On a $1 million purchase, transfer duty of about $40,000 will be payable on top of the property purchase price.

• If you’re interested in purchasing a property, request a copy of the contract from the agent and send it to your solicitor or conveyancer for review as early as possible. There may be matters in the contract that require advice or negotiation and you’ll need to factor in time to allow this to occur.

Buying or selling a property can be the largest single transaction that many people embark upon.

LOCALS RECOGNISED AT AWARDS EVENING Worthy local recipients were recognised at the North Sydney Community Awards held in late September.

There were two local recipients of the North Sydney Older Person of the Year Award. Dr Ray Kearney was recognised for his substantial contribution through his studies on endangered fungi in Lane Cove Bushland Park, together with his voluntary contributions to public health.

Stewart Begg was recognised for his work in generating publicity to promote the work of the North Shore Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Keeping your pet safe from ticks Tick toxicity in pets can cause paralysis and death, usually within 3-5 days, so it’s vital to know what signs to look out for.

Bravecto has also recently released a spot-on liquid for cats (which lasts 3 months) and dogs (which lasts 6 months).

In addition to an isoxazaline, which requires the tick to bite the pet before it dies, I would also recommend a tick repellent product to prevent ticks from attaching: • Seresto collar (repels ticks for 4 months in dogs and cats*) • Scalibor collar (repels ticks for 3 months in dogs only) • Advantix spot-on (repels ticks for 2 weeks in dogs only) * For cats, the Seresto collar is currently only licensed for flea prevention, but the company is in the process of obtaining registration for tick prevention too.

Tick toxicity occurs when the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) attaches to your dog or cat to feed. While they are feeding, the tick injects a poison. Approximately 5% of pets will die – so it is vital to know what signs to look out for and to have proven preventatives on board.

Products that claim to prevent ticks through ultrasonic means are misleading – they will not protect your pet.

Tick paralysis is found along the east coast of Australia and up to 20km inland. The natural hosts for this deadly parasite are possums and bandicoots. Since possums and bandicoots are widespread within suburbia, it is vital that your pet has tick preventative applied all year round.

Clipping

The lifecycle of the paralysis tick is approximately 12 months, with the adults being most active in the warmer months (spring/ summer). However, pets can be poisoned at any time, so it is a good idea to have tick prevention on board all year round.

Set an alarm on your phone or write in your diary when your pet is due for their tick prevention, as a few days late may be too late!

Clipping pets with long hair can be life-saving in tick season, as it isn’t possible to find all the ticks on your pet if there is a long or thick coat present. Many owners routinely clip their pet’s coat in the spring and summer. It is particularly important to keep the hair around the face and muzzle short as this is where the majority of ticks attach.

Searching A daily search for ticks on your pet should be part of the health care routine, regardless of whether they are on a preventative product, as occasionally tick toxicity can still occur. This may be because the pet vomited the medication before it was properly absorbed.

It takes approximately 15 mins to do a thorough search and this gives you three chances to find a tick before tick toxicity occurs. This is much easier if your pet has been clipped - start with the face, head, neck and shoulders, which is where 70% of ticks attach.

If you find a tick, remove it immediately either with a tick twister, or with a twist and pull action using your thumb and forefinger. Do not kill the tick first! 

What are the early signs of tick toxicity?

Pets may show some or all of the following signs, which usually occur within 3 days of tick attachment: • Vomiting (mainly dogs) • A change in the meow or bark (due to laryngeal paralysis) • Incoordination • Difficulty breathing • Paralysis

PROFESSIONAL GROOMING FOR CATS AND DOGS

If your pet shows some of these signs or you are suspicious of a tick, take them to the vet immediately, even if it means going to an afterhours emergency centre. The earlier the tick is located, removed and treatment is started, the better the prognosis.

Preventative products In the last couple of years, a new group of tick preventatives have been released into the market resulting in a dramatic reduction in tick toxicity seen by vets. These are known as isoxazaline preventatives: • Simparica (monthly oral chew tablet for dogs) • Nexgard (monthly oral chew tablet for dogs) • Bravecto (quarterly oral chew tablet for dogs) 24 TVO NOVEMBER 2018

It’s a Belmond, beautiful world I’ve never read Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, but she was front of mind when I recently boarded the Venice Simplon Orient Express to discover this iconic train for myself.

And as I sat in my compartment, traversing the north of Italy and then the mountainous terrain through Austria to France, I was content to just be. To enjoy the scenery that flashed past my window, and amazingly, capture some half-reasonable photos.

Of course it is retold that Agatha Christie conceived her story when the train became marooned after flooding rains washed part of the tracks away. We had no such (bad) luck, though I still kept an eye out for Hercule Poirot. It was doubly thrilling to find that my room was adjacent to that occupied by the Dame on the journey which inspired her world-famous novel.

We begin our trip with a boat transfer along the Grand Canal to St Lucia station. It’s a beautiful day and we’re feeling smugly optimistic about the wonderful experience we’re about to enjoy.

Boarding any train is always busy, but with the assistance of the smartly attired room attendants we are soon in our rooms, awaiting tea and waving back regally to the interested gallery left on the platform. Is it my imagination that they look a little jealous?

Tea is as regal as we feel. Naturally, the porcelain china cups and plates are a fine complement to the thirst quenching tea, delicious savouries and sweet-treats. This meal in itself turns out to be a mere prelude to more: a mouth-watering 3-course lunch, which is in turn followed by early evening pre-dinner snacks, another gourmet 3-course meal (dinner), a light continental breakfast and then a 3-course brunch featuring the chef’s signature lobster dish. I’m a little ashamed to admit that I ate it all – no surprises there if you’ve seen me lately – however it was all in the interests of market research (as I am sure you will understand!)

Our fellow passengers are a diverse bunch. Several have taken the suggestion of glamour very seriously – many men debonair in their dinner suits, several ladies bejewelled and elegant in long gowns and elbow length gloves reminiscent of ‘the golden age’ of train travel. They come from all over the world and you quickly glean that this is a bucket list trip for most, as they confess that yes, it is an expensive trip and more than they can really afford, but it has been a dream they’ve had for several years.... There is certainly no sense of snobbery.

My room sleeps two in twin bunk beds, however I am single tonight so it feels relatively spacious. I sleep perfectly well, cocooned within luxurious bed linen on what is a couch by day and a bed by night. Stretching out straight would be a little tricky for the very tall. (I’ll be happy to book you into one of the newly renovated suites perhaps?) Unlike our rooms, which sport a masterfully designed washbasin with hot and cold water (there is a toilet at each end of each carriage), the suites have spacious marble ensuites. Luxury!

The rooms are very well designed. Yes they are small, but you learn to be more tidy and can store what is not needed. Baggage can be checked through to the final destination, so you need only take an overnight bag - provided it will hold all your finery!

In addition, Belmond thoughtfully provides many of the touches common to a five-star hotel, for example a cotton yukata robe and quality slippers. Both may be ‘souvenired’ on departure and I love how each day I am now reminded of my wonderful journey.

Would I recommend the Belmond Venice Simplon Orient Express trip? In a heartbeat. It’s like nothing else I have ever done, but I would do again for the sense of nostalgia and romance , to celebrate a special occasion or to provide a journey highlight.

Community shapers and sharpeners The National President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Clare Cousins, recently commented on a remark by renowned architect Renzo Piano that “if a writer makes a bad book, eh, people don’t read it.

But if you make bad architecture, you impose ugliness on a place for a hundred years.”

has particular resonance when Australia has apparently just toppled Switzerland as the country with the highest average wealth. He referenced Pierce Freelon, founder of Blackspace in North Carolina, to whom ‘20th-century highway-building and 21st-century gentrification’ were regarded as ‘flip sides of the same phenomenon: the pushing of a city’s most vulnerable to the periphery by free-market forces that open an increasingly wide chasm of racial and economic inequality. “Community,” he said, “is about thwarting that trajectory.”

Yeoman proposed that psychologist Abraham Maslow’s famous ‘hierarchy of needs’, with food and shelter at the top of the order as basic survival requirements, established the critical ingredients for a solid, well-rounded community.

Food security is a serious concern with the fast diminishing sources of agriculture close to the city, but affordable housing in sustainable urban environments must also be high on a register challenged by homelessness and economic inequality.

During October, the Sherman Centre for Culture and Ideas (SCCI) ran a 10-day Architecture Hub symposium on the ways in which collaborative design practices and peer-to-peer communications can stimulate more social awareness, create catalysts for change and help boost local economies.

Building community is an all-hands effort that requires buy-in from everybody.

Keynote speakers from India, Iraq and Japan showed examples of visionary projects in architecture, public art and sustainable design that challenged narrow community views of how our urban environment could be improved. Local practitioners discussed affordable co-housing developments, materials technologies, robotic systems and concepts for more sharing and accessible environments for living, working and learning.

Another analogy could be if a doctor makes a wrong diagnosis, the patient may continue to suffer repercussions. Yet we have planning and development systems that often fail to diagnose the differences that quality design can make to the wellbeing of our community - and to the health of the environment exposing us all to future urban blight and associated costs on many levels.

A common thread was that design process and practice must focus more on community ethics, and people rather than products. If people are not happy or productive in their day-to-day environments, we all bear the burden through loss of productivity, diminished self-worth, decline of social and mental health, and the shared costs of ongoing repairs or replacement due to failure of the buildings we inhabit.

That is why Cousins, and many others, are promoting the role of architects as ‘city shapers’, encouraging the Institute and other organisations with an interest in urban development to pursue more investigation and debate on where politics, education, research and social and environmental sciences can contribute better to our future wellbeing.

Building community is an all-hands effort that requires buyin from everybody - elected officials, civic organizations, spiritual leaders, artists, businesses, along with a host of both advocates and critics of urban development. But to do this we need to lower barriers - to owning a home, to exhibiting artwork or craft, to launching a start-up, gaining a voice in public policy, or just feeling like you belong where you live. 

A Fifth Estate article recently covered these concerns and the ongoing advocacy needed for design professions to consider implications not just for places, but for the people who use them – and how they respond to the overall environments created.

This is particularly critical for our public buildings and places where there can be a wide spectrum of ongoing impacts on communities. Concerns should also extend to the huge overlay of roads and public transport infrastructure being rolled out across Sydney at the moment, as many emerging precincts around the toll roads and rail or metro stations are unfortunately seen as by-products rather than real opportunities for quality public realm.

Easy to say, but how do we do it?

The following information may be helpful.

At our recent stall at Lane Cove’s Sustainability Lane event, we showcased some great examples that are all available locally and online.

Compostable - The best option.

Dental, beauty and eye care products such as empty toothpaste tubes, dental floss packaging, and cosmetic containers can be recycled through the Terracycle bin located in Lane Cove Advantage Pharmacy at 121 Longueville Road (next to Sushi Maru).

Reusable produce shopping bags enable you to pick loose fruit and vegetables and offer the convenience of bagged produce when you get to the checkout or load your car. Flannerys and The Source in Lane Cove sell options for these.

If you still require bin liners, choosing the best one for the environment can be a minefield. Read the labels carefully.

Compostable bin liners can be found at Go Vita, Coles, Woolworths and Flannerys. Go Vita has an excellent range of sizes and smaller compostable dog poo bags too.

Most of the plastic ever made STILL EXISTS TODAY!

Breaks down effectively in virtually all composting systems with no residual contamination. To meet Australian Standard AS4736-2006 it must breakdown in one composting cycle.

Often made from bamboo, sugarcane by-products, paper, or PLA (Polylactic Acid) which is a derivative of corn starch.

Biodegradable - Second best option.

Similar standards to ‘compostable’.

However, it is not required to break down in one composting cycle under Australian standards, so it may take years to biodegrade.

Degradable or oxy-degradable - Worst option.

Breaks down into smaller pieces of plastic only. Can cause devasting damage to marine and bird life when mistaken for food. Will contaminate any composting facility.

Remember: Every bag which ends up in the marine environment can cause harm until it decomposes. Even if compostable or biodegradable items end up in landfill, they will breakdown eventually. Plastic never will.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO GILLIAN BATT

Sometimes I am amazed at people’s generosity, and also on the other hand, some people’s selfishness.

This month we’ve been running an Anti-Poverty Food Drive. We’ve been collecting pasta, rice, tuna and other pantry essentials. We are still receiving donations, and in fact we welcome them all year around. I know a lot of people think that we live in wealthy, well-to-do suburbs around here. But let me assure you that if you scratch the surface, or go beyond your comfortable boundaries, you can find just as much poverty, neglect and abuse as in any other innercity suburb.

I sometimes find it incongruous that we have seniors who are outraged that we should ask them to pay $5 to play table tennis, when on the other side of the office we are trying to find enough resources to support someone adequately enough to be looked after in their own home and not admitted to hospital.

In fact, I think we are sometimes confronted when we meet the everyday realities of life. Some people who are happy to pay $3 for a coffee rail against a $5 fee for 3 hours of table tennis, citing as their reasoning that the Council contributes some funding for the provision of services to the people of Lane Cove.

If you were to ask the good citizens of Lane Cove whether they want their rates to provide for free table tennis for middle class, active residents or to pay for home nursing, meals and home modifications for people who otherwise would have to either be hospitalised or leave their family home and be admitted to a care home, I think they would be universal in their condemnation of the selfish approach to community care.

Last week the Council asked me to give my thoughts on a letter written to

the Mayor complaining about the $5 fee for Friday afternoon table tennis.

We provide a room, tables, ice creams, cleaning, power and drinks from 12.30 to 6pm and public liability insurance cover and ask for a contribution of $5.

An additional complaint is they weren’t consulted on the flooring of the Park View Room. Those who play table tennis feel it would be more suitable for them if it was a polished wooden floor. I have repeatedly pointed out that for the rest of the week, the majority of our clients are over 70 and many have limited mobility and use walking sticks and other mobility aids. Carpet is obviously the safest choice for them, otherwise Royal North Shore Hospital could expect an epidemic of broken legs and hips.

What would you reply to the table tennis complainant if you were me? I would like to point out the majority of players are happy to pay the $5, but there are still some who refuse to pay and one other who every Friday throws the money at our young receptionist.

I remain incredulous.

The sun shone on Sunday 14th October for the Lane Cove Rotary Fair and what a day we had! At 5.30am we were ruing the rain, praying it would cease, and that the crowds would come in their thousands to see what was a happenin’ at Lane Cove.

And so it came to pass. The rain disappeared and the sun came out, the puddles dried up, and it seemed as if everyone in postcode 2066 decided that the Fair was the perfect way to spend a Sunday. There were singers and dancers and bands, a very popular face painter, rides, stalls and more.

All up, Lane Cove Rotary raised $24,500 for local and international community projects and we would like to say a huge thank you for everyone’s support.

The Lane Cove Rotary Club would also like to thank all of the community volunteers who answered our plea in The Village Observer for assistance. You did a superlative job. Market Square Car Park Last month Council introduced two exit lanes to the Market Square Car Park.

Recognising that close to 90% of car park users stay for less than 3 hours, these will in time serve as an Express Lane for those who have stayed less than 3 hours or have already paid.

There is also a Pay Lane for people who forgot to pay before exiting.

The new lanes do not have boom gates as a new ticketless system will use number plate recognition to enforce payment for overstaying. New signage will be unveiled once the system is up and running .

New BBQ in Goodlet Reserve

Longueville Sporting Club

A BBQ has been installed in Goodlet Reserve, Lane Cove North. The BBQ is also accessible for people with a disability. You can enter the reserve via Helen Street and Stokes Street.

Thanks to State funding through the Stronger Communities Fund, Council is replacing the roof of the Longueville Sporting Club ahead of the popular Christmas season.

Demolition has also commenced in Pinaroo Place to create the 6,300m2 of space for the new park.

Lane Cove Fun Run Each year I organise the North Sydney Community Awards to honour those volunteering and working in our community. This year’s awards were held on 27th September and shone a very bright light on all those who serve our community. It was great to have so many people join us and we enjoyed the witty reflections of ABC journalist and commentator Annabel Crabb.

Key local winners include Larry Boyd, founder of the Different Degrees Theatre Ensemble, and Hunters Hill resident Alanna Fisher, in recognition of her sporting achievements in futsal.

Local recipients of the North Sydney Community Group of the Year included the Hunters Hill Bushcare Program and The Mamas and The Mamas Choir.

Lane Cove Fair Despite the threat of rain (which thankfully was held at bay), this year’s Lane Cove Fair was again a huge success. Thousands of local residents enjoyed the stalls, food, rides and wonderful music. I spent most of the day at my stall meeting residents and discussing federal issues. It was wonderful to get so much feedback (both brickbats and bouquets!).

Thanks to Lane Cove Rotary and Council for all their work on putting on such a great community event.

Seniors Expo On Friday 23rd November, I am hosting the third annual North Sydney Seniors Expo to showcase local community groups, businesses, aged care services, and government agencies that are providing services to senior Australians living in our area.

The North Sydney Seniors Expo is a free community event and will run from 10am – 2pm. The Expo will be opened at 11.00am by the Hon Julie Bishop MP, Member for Curtin in the Federal Parliament and former Minister for Foreign Affairs.

I am grateful Norths are again sponsoring the event and the Expo is being held at their Club in Abbott Street, Cammeray.

Over 60 stallholders will be participating including health services, government agencies (including Centrelink, the NBN and the Australian Tax Office), local Councils, community organisations, volunteer groups and local businesses. Last year over 2000 people attended the Expo and the feedback was very positive, with many people discovering new services and opportunities close to home.

MEMBER FOR LANE COVE

There is a great deal happening to improve the liveability and amenity of the Lane Cove electorate thanks to funding from the NSW Government, much of which will be announced in the coming weeks.

There will be upgrades and improvements to sporting fields, club houses, parks and open spaces, the beautification of certain areas within the electorate and much more.

Delhi Road widening One improvement I am pleased to be able to announce is that commuters can now enjoy an easier journey through North Ryde, following the completion of a $15 million widening and upgrade of Delhi Road between the Hills M2 and Lane Cove National Park.

This upgrade will make it easier for Lachlan’s Line residents, visitors and Sydney commuters to travel to and from the Macquarie Park precinct and onto the M2 motorway.

Pedestrian and cycle bridge The next important infrastructure project to be constructed is a $40 million landmark pedestrian and cycle bridge in North Ryde which will provide safe and convenient access for pedestrians and cyclists as they travel between Lachlan’s Line, the North Ryde Railway Station and jobs in Macquarie Park.

Boating upgrades Another infrastructure upgrade set to be delivered in Lane Cove under round two of the NSW Government’s $70 million Boating Now program are new boat ramps, pontoons and jetties, and improved car and trailer parking facilities at key access points in Lane Cove.

These projects will improve the overall capacity and amenity of boating infrastructure and are based on direct engagement with our local boaties. I welcome the additional contribution made by local councils and other partners which brought the total funding of the second round to $105,000 for Lane Cove.

The successful projects in Lane Cove include improved nonpowered boating access at Bennelong Park, Putney and improved dinghy storage and launching facilities at Hunters Hill.

Good luck to HSC students Finally, a message to all the Year 12 students who are sitting for the 2018 HSC exams.

My advice is study, but don’t knock yourself out, eat sensibly and get plenty of sleep. Do not cut family and friends out and maintain a balanced social life.

Do your best – that is all anyone can expect. A high aggregate is pleasing, but lower marks are not a reflection on your future prospects.

And here’s a little trivia - 6,106 young men and women will sit the 2018 HSC from the Sydney-North, Sydney and Hornsby region.

In total 76,732 students across NSW are currently feeling the tension.

Centenary of Armistice On November 11 this year, NSW will join communities across Australia and the world to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice that marks the end of The Great War. I urge the community to stop and pause for reflection for one minute at 11.00am on Sunday November 11th to remember our veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to express gratitude for the peace and prosperity that we enjoy today.

Whether attending a commemoration, walking down the street, listening to the radio, or watching television, on public transport or in shopping centres, it would be wonderful to see the State come to a standstill at 11.00am and remember our fallen and all those who have contributed to keep the peace, together with our current day servicemen and women.

Penny wins History Prize This year’s Lane Cove History Prize, supported by Hyecorp Property Group and presented by Lane Cove Historical Society, was awarded to Penny Ransby Smith.

Penny received a prizewinning cheque of $2,000 at a ceremony held in the Lane Cove Library on 23rd October.

The prize was presented by Professor Paul Ashton of Macquarie University.

The Lane Cove History Prize is unusual, in that it is one of few local history prizes awarded in Australia. It is intended to promote interest in the history of Lane Cove and its environs.

Penny’s prize -winning essay, Lane Cove Schools 1876 to 2018: A History of Lane Cove told through its Schools, was inspired by her five grandchildren, all of whom have attended either St Michael’s or Lane Cove West Primary School over the last few years.

Penny says that her interest in writing such a history came to her when attending the annual Harmony Day at Lane Cove West Public School in 2017. She was inspired to see an “extraordinary number of students proudly displaying the national costumes of their parents, grandparents and forebears.”

This caused her to reflect on the nature of Lane Cove as an area and how the local schools reveal a great deal of the character of contemporary Lane Cove.

Penny Ransby Smith has written an interesting account, placing developments in schools in the broader context of changing social practices and attitudes.

As the population of Lane Cove and its environs changed and diversified, schools opened and, in some cases, others closed, reflecting shifting social pressures and movements.

Overall, contemporary Lane Cove has a valuable history to reveal in all aspects of its schooling.

Professor Paula Hamilton of UTS, praised the winning essay for its clarity and originality. The prize was warmly supported by Councillor Pam Palmer, Mayor of Lane Cove, who officially opened the evening. The winning essay and others received for the competition will be published in a forthcoming edition of the LCHS Journal.

Gifted communicator, practicing art teacher and art tour leader, Pamela Fairburn, generously shared her knowledge to an enthralled audience at the September meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society.

Pamela confessed to being a water and nature lover. Photos are often taken of interesting patterns and scenes that catch her eye when walking through the bush and foreshore. They provide inspiration for her mark making.

A few introductory comments were made about the materials she was going to use in her presentation. Oil pastels, unlike soft pastels, do not ‘shatter’ but rather act as a resist when applied to the paper.

“They are a wonderful tool for drawing,” remarked Pamela.

Sennelier was the preferred brand because of their ‘yummy’ buttery consistency, which allows them to blend so well to the paper surface. In part of the demonstration Pamela used what looked like an oil stick, but it was in fact a large oil pastel.

A nuanced understanding of her materials together with an enthusiasm to try different combinations with experimental application tools are both contributing factors behind Pamela’s creative marks.

How the marks are made determines the ‘character’ of the line that makes up the drawing using varying pressure and free arm movements. Standing while you work allows more fluid movement across the paper. To accentuate a freer mark, Pamela taped an oil pastel to the end of a stick and let it explore the Saunders watercolour paper.

Texture within a work can be created in a variety of ways. If the surface of the paper is rough, then dragging an oil pastel across it can produce instant ‘lichen looking’ patterns.

What tool you use will influence the appearance of a mark. A sponge will make a mark that is very different from a scraper dragged across the surface of the work. If the surface is scratched into (a technique known as scraffito) and watercolour is then applied, it will seep into these scratches giving a deeper tonal line. Using a candle creates yet another resist mark that appears like magic when watercolour is applied.

Once Pamela had drawn a composition of angophoras and rocks with a variety of tools and oil pastels, she then set about applying watercolour over the top of this base layer of drawing.

She used a watercolour brush very gently in this step so as not to dislodge the under layer of oil pastel and yes, little beads of water did coagulate on top of the oil pastel. This enhanced the textural quality of the artwork.

Although the palette of colours was restrained, what emerged was a beautiful work full of free marks and the magic that happens when materials are allowed the freedom to do their own thing. It was so mesmerizing to watch watercolours meet one another - no shyness there - just pure magic.

Pamela explained that once these base layers have dried, there is nothing stopping an artist from adding more layers, but only if the work needs it. Sometimes less really is more.

Flourishing along the river banks

Currumbena Primary School students.

It is often said that music feeds the mind and soothes the soul. In this age of electronic devices, it is great to know that a love of music is flourishing within the schools and communities in the Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Ryde areas.

Busy music programme for Currambena Currambena School students are currently finalising their ‘Story Music’ small group projects. Groups have written stories and then produced a sound track to tell the story in music. These are being shared and appreciated with great delight!

A very entertaining series of short animations have also been completed by art groups and sound effects added. These will be screened to the parents at the school concert evening in week 6 of the school term on the big stage at Norths League Club.

In addition, piano and guitar players are rehearsing for a performance in week 3 for the whole school. This is a fabulous little concert when players choose a piece to perform and showcase what they have been learning.

The Red Earth Christmas Concert HHHS AND LCYO JOIN FORCES TO SUPPORT GUNNEDAH This November and December, the LCYO and Hunters Hill High School will be putting on a series of rehearsals and a charity ‘Red Earth’ Christmas Concert to celebrate the Australian sounds of Christmas.

There will be a selection of Australian Christmas Carols to help support struggling farmers in Lane Cove’s sister town, Gunnedah.

Primary school students in years 5 or 6 who play an orchestral instrument are invited to participate. The concert will be held on Monday 10th December at 7pm in the Hunters Hill High School hall. Light refreshments will be provided. Attendance is free, but a gold coin donation will be requested.

Through dedicated programmes, Lane Cove Youth Orchestra's budding musicians can gain an exposure to a wide range of instruments and performance opportunities at many schools in the area, including Lane Cove Public School, Lane Cove West Public School, Boronia Park Public School, Hunters Hill Public School and Gladesville Public School. These programmes include brass bands, guitar groups, jazz groups, percussion groups and orchestras.

This interest in music can be further fostered at Hunters Hill High School, with its Concert Band, Stage Band, String Ensemble, Guitar Groups and Percussion Groups. These groups perform both at internal school functions as well as local music festivals and eisteddfods. The big band inspired Stage Band, together with the Strings Ensemble, recently played at the Bedlam at the Bay event in Gladesville.

Outside of school, children with an interest in orchestral instruments can challenge themselves with the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra, a dynamic community music group which has been operating in Lane Cove since 1992, drawing students from many different schools and localities. Five members of the Hunters Hill High School Strings Ensemble now play leading roles within the string section of LCYO, while also constituting its string quintet.

MURDER AND THE MAN ON THE MOON 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon. As part of the upcoming celebrations, Hunters Hill author Paula Astridge has released her latest book: Rocket Man: Nazi at NASA.

LCFC TASTES TOURNAMENT SUCCESS A team of Over 35’s players from Lane Cove Football Club competed in a 16-team tournament in Huskisson over the October long weekend. Teams from across NSW and ACT competed in a round-robin format on Saturday, with finals matches on Sunday.

LCFC qualified for Sunday’s finals after finishing Saturday’s matches undefeated with two wins and a draw from its three pool matches.

The first match on Sunday was a quarter final against Merimbula FC. Despite some tired legs, LCFC pulled away late for a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Two hours later it was semi-final time, with LCFC matched up against Northern Riverina. LCFC carried its good form into the semis, with its superior fitness and gameplay resulted in a convincing 10-0 win.

This set them up for a grand final clash with Kemps Creek, which was a much tighter match. LCFC had the better of play, but failed to turn its dominance into goals. With scores locked at 0-0 after extra time, a penalty shootout was required to determine a winner. After a tense penalty shootout, Kemps Creek finally missed a penalty to hand LCFC a 7-6 win and the title of Husky By The Sea 2018 champions!

It was a fantastic weekend and LCFC looks forward to defending its title in 2019.

GAME, SET, MATCH FOR NATALIE Local student Natalie Gaft has just won the NSW State Team Tennis championships, held at Cessnock in late October.

Competing regularly in local tournaments, Natalie has had great success this year including winning events at Macquarie University and Olympic Park in the 12 and under age group.

It is this success that will see Natalie representing Australia in September 2019, when she will travel to Japan to compete in the World Junior Tennis Championships.

Only 10 years old, Natalie is in year 5 at Lane Cove Public School. A natural left hander, Natalie has been playing tennis since she was 4 years old. She has coaching three times per week with Andrew Scanlan from Lane Cove Tennis Club and plays sets against her father Alexander Gaft on the other days.

The book delves into the highly controversial life of Baron Werner von Braun. His V-2 Rocket killed thousands of men, women and children during WW11, but his Apollo 11 flew America to the moon and opened the gates to the universe.

His brilliance, charm and handsome Hollywood looks inspired a blockbuster movie and made him a worldwide celebrity with a fan base of millions. To this day, however, a cloud hangs over his name, for there was no doubt that he was a member of Hitler’s Nazi Party and that he helped supervise Germany’s secret, subterranean missile works – a construction complex notorious for its horrendous torture of concentration camp prisoners who were worked to death during the production of von Braun’s deadly V-2 missile.

At the end of WW11, there was a suspicious lack of documentation to be found in regard to von Braun’s true involvement in the Reich, but one blurry photograph still exists of him in SS uniform standing at Reichfuhrer Heinrich Himmler’s side. Von Braun claimed that he stood there under duress, but those who suffered and survived the war testified in a post war court that there was no doubt as to his complicity in war crimes.

The question of von Braun being hero or villain still remains today. There is only one irrefutable fact: That America actively turned a blind eye to his dubious past in order to secure his services. Had they not, Apollo 11 would not have landed on the moon, Neil Armstrong would not have taken his giant leap for mankind and America would not have placed first in the space race.

One way or another von Braun was a remarkable man, with not a boring moment in his phenomenal life.

Good Choices ‘And the winner of most items in their handbag is…Karen!’ My embarrassing ‘win’ was many years ago now, but was symptomatic of a tendency to be overprepared. Although my handbag is lighter these days, unnecessary details and decisions can occupy too much of my time and energy.

This is where our value system clicks in. Our inherited world view is an important factor, but it is ours to accept or reject at every turn.

Advertising sends us a constant message that it’s all about satisfying our needs and our desires. Don’t be fooled by this assumption. You can make a big difference in someone’s life. With a team of nearly 400 volunteers, Sydney Community Services provides a range of services to support over 500 older residents and people living with a disability living in our local community.

We are currently looking for volunteers in the following areas: DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE? We are looking for friendly and capable volunteer drivers to drive our larger (from 20 seater) community bus on day trips. A Light or Medium Rigid Licence would be required.

We are also looking for friendly and capable volunteer drivers to drive our smaller 12 seater community bus. No special bus licence is required for this one, just a medical clearance letter from GP.
