What beautiful weather we’ve had – I hope everyone’s made the most of it before winter sets in, especially in the Easter holiday break.

It was wonderful to see the hundreds of people of all ages at the Anzac Day service in Lane Cove Plaza. The music, especially the Last Post and Lane Cove Choristers’ voices, and the speeches too, combined for a moving commemoration. ANZAC day has come to mean more to me as I get older and it’s heartening that so many young people are now interested, knowledgeable and reverential about April 25.

It’s a busy time of year with election campaigns ramping up and a flood of campaign news to mentally filter and put into context. The effect of the record-high youth vote this year will be interesting.

One local name that’s come to attention politically and over many years in the public health sphere and as a GP, is Arthur Chesterfield Evans, a long-time Woolwich resident who is featured in our profile this issue. He has never pulled any punches – the graffiti by his BUGA UP crew was illegal, outspoken and instrumental in getting tobacco marketing banned. His political voice – heard in the past in NSW parliament – is still loud and clear.

The first Sunday in May is the Hunters Hill Food and Wine Festival at Boronia Park oval which opens 25 cellar doors, not to mention something to nibble on while you’re having a drink and enjoying entertainment.

And don’t you dare forget Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May. You could find a present at the Hunters Hill Festival the week before. Perhaps you’ve booked a restaurant or planned to host a family barbeque? If not, get your skates on and browse your local village shops for an ideal present. Keep your ears open for hints from mum – I am planting ideas for a day out at an art gallery. Fingers crossed!

Your call — The Canopy No longer called the Rosenthal project nor the Rosenthal carpark, The Canopy was named after community consultation which captured the imaginations of local residents.

Thorough consultation on the name started in mid-2018 with an invitation from Lane Cove Council for residents to suggest names; next came a flood of 250 ideas. From this, six names were shortlisted based on Council’s brand values for the project – these values are nurturing, engaging and productive.

The naming guidelines also require a new name to be ‘unique’, easy to spell and write.

The community was then asked in an online survey to rank their preferences – and 600 responses came in, with The Canopy being chosen as the most popular with the survey respondents as well as the best reflection of the values. Council is thrilled with community involvement in the naming process.

Roll up, youth vote takes effect The national enrolment rate reached an extraordinary 96.8%. as 100,000 people enrolled in the week before rolls closed. A record 16,424,248 Australians are to vote this month, and the youth vote – also an enrolment record – will count more than usual.

“This phenomenally high base of election participation is unlikely to be matched anywhere in the world,” said Electoral Commissioner, Tom Rogers. “A national enrolment rate of 96.8% was for a long time thought to be unattainable. It’s something all Australians can be proud of.”

The youth enrolment rate is also at the highest level ever with 400,000 18-19 year olds and an estimated 88.8% of eligible 1824 year olds, all enrolled to vote. This is the first federal election at which Australians born in the year 2000 will vote. Around 70,000 18-24 year-olds were among the additions to the roll during the close of rolls week.

“Enrolment for this youth cohort at 88.8% is now even higher than it was for the marriage postal survey when it was 88.6%,” Mr Rogers said.

“I’d like to thank the entire Lane Cove community and our local businesses for their understanding and patience during the construction so far. A project of this size requires a coordinated construction effort over many months, said Mayor, Cr Pam Palmer.

Cr Palmer pointed out that the project achieves something rare in Sydney today – with additional open space in the centre of an established urban village.

Back in 2013, Council engaged the community to find out what kind of place people wanted as a ‘town square’. About 370 people took part and the result was that the character of the development was defined as a contemporary place that’s ‘informal, textured, comfortable and green’ and offers a choice of ‘lively and peaceful’ spaces.

When it opens in mid-2020, The Canopy will comprise a park with village green and children’s playground, performance stage, restaurant precinct, Coles and Aldi supermarkets plus a much-needed 500-space underground car park.

“The Canopy is set to be a unique place in Sydney, a place where people of all ages from children and students to adults and grandparents can play, perform, eat and relax … a new meeting place in Lane Cove,” said Cr Palmer.

Accelerate free climate action event

Make an advance Being prepared for future possibilities is an important part of life. All of us, regardless of health or age, should make known our health preferences to prepare (as much as possible) for all sorts of future events. Of course, it can be especially important for people with an advanced chronic or life-limiting illness, or anyone old enough to be at risk of losing competence.

Last week, a national awareness initiative called Advanced Care Planning Week challenged us all to start heartfelt conversations with people we’re close to about what ‘living well’ means to us. This includes thinking about who we’d want to speak for us if we were somehow unable to speak for ourselves. It goes beyond filling in a form – it’s a two-way street with a commitment to honour an individual’s preferences based on their personal values, and beliefs.

An advanced care directive is only used if we’re unable to make or communicate decisions. It’s then used to guide decisions by medical staff in consultation with an appointed substitute decision-maker if one has been nominated, and/or family.

Otherwise, when there’s serious illness and no directive, doctors have to make treatment decisions based on their assessment of a person’s best interests – and perhaps include unwanted treatments.

Accelerate is an Australia-focused film which shows how we can fight against new fossil fuel projects and push for a fair and fast transition to 100% renewable energy. Accelerate follows Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org, during his 2018 tour of Australia as he works to share his ideas, inspire communities and motivate people to ensure climate change is the number one issue for us all. Bill is one of the most acclaimed environmental activists in the US. Following the one-hour movie, there will be a chance to have your questions answered in a Q and A session. The panel will include Dr Mark Diesendorf BSc (Hons) PhD, Australian academic, environmental scientist and campaigner.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the problems caused by climate change and, importantly, also the solutions.

Your best shot An annual influenza vaccination is regarded as the best way to prevent influenza and its complications. The good news is they’re free for people who are most vulnerable to flu – all seniors 65 years and over, pregnant women, all indigenous ATSI people 6 months and older, and also anybody 6 months or more with a condition that increases risk of complications from flu.

For those aged 65-plus years, an enhanced trivalent vaccine is available while four age-specific quadrivalent vaccines are available for eligible groups under 65 years old.

Viruses change each year so it’s important to get the vaccine annually from your GP or community health clinic.

THE BURNS BAY BOOKERY Running the independent bookstore in Lane Cove was almost inevitable for avid readers and sociable retailers, Beatle Wallace and Karen Thompson. Although they initially postponed the leap into their own business, their personal, ‘diagnostic’ approach to discovering customers’ tastes means business is blooming undaunted by the likes of Amazon and Kindle.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

I love the satisfaction of opening in the morning and it looks great and we know we’ve made this. It’s great that Rosemary Moir, still a customer, likes what we’ve done. Every day’s different – you never know who you’re going to meet or what conversations will be had.

What do you find most challenging about it?

We have forensic ability to find books – even for people who say, ‘I don’t know the author or title but its cover is blue and it’s new because I heard about it on the radio’. And we have a ‘diagnostic’ chat – asking questions to help them remember more, why they might like it. After that, it can take a week of discussion and Googling but we do find that book! It’s so satisfying!

What is something people might not know about you?

Beatle: My real name is Georgina. When I was about three I had a haircut and my father said ‘You look like one of those wretched Beatles!’, so it’s been Beatle ever since.

How would you describe the current business environment?

What attracted you to Lane Cove?

We were both long-time residents raising children here and both worked as salespeople for Moirs Bookshop, the area’s original bookshop – which opened in the Village Shopping Centre 27 years ago. We both loved working there, chatting to people about books. Later Moirs offered the business to us but our families were young then, it wasn’t the right time. When the next owners wanted to sell, our families had grown, we had our lives back so … we held hands and jumped off the cliff together. It was 2015, and for us it was like coming home.

Customers said ‘It’s so nice to have you back’ – and we agreed it was great to be back. We spent the first year in countless meetings working out how to do it well, revising and ordering stock to create a fantastic range.

What makes your book store different?

It’s a little counter-intuitive – two bookstores both working well so close to each other [Dymocks is a couple of doors along]. But that gives us freedom to do something very different. We have a commercial range but it doesn’t have to be mainstream. Our bestsellers are also likely to include Booker, Stella and other literary prize-winners, and we run an extensive range of children’s books and many interesting art, science and socio-political books.

Our philosophy is: stock a few copies of a wide range and give great customer service. All staff are readers who talk books, get to know customers and their preferences, and they trust us to recommend. We also have a wide choice of gifts and quirky things which people love and unusual cards that even out-oftown customers come for.

Great – there’s enough business to go around all the online, chain stores and independents. There was a big dent in the book market around the GFC – about 2009, and online sales were part of it, but that’s changed. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, browsing online is not inspiring and there’s no customer service. We have built the customer base and relationships with all sorts of customers, all ages and tastes. Young mums are always in here; they bring a lot of energy to the place.

Sales have gone up in number and sale value – so we must be doing something right. Some online vendors say ‘nextday delivery’ but we offer ‘next-minute delivery’!

Double honours for Soulful Fitness Soulful Fitness has been going from strength to strength since 2015 when it was started by Amanda Bracks, who was last month inducted into the industry’s Roll of Honour.

Soulful Fitness which runs yoga, pilates, barre among other exercise classes in Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove, also won the ‘Boutique Fitness Business of the Year’ Award.

The Roll of Honour gives national recognition to people who are described as 'game-changers' who have made an enduring contribution to the fitness industry.

Bracks and her fitness studio were recognised by the national industry association because she is an expert in client liaison and “has been a mentor to thousands of sales people, customer service representatives and businesses owners”.

Welcome pantry This month St Michael’s Lane Cove Social Justice Group is running a Food Bank Drive for The House of Welcome which supports asylum seekers and refugees living in the Australian community.

Many of the Social Justice Group’s clients are not eligible for government housing, financial or medical support, and do not have the right to work in Australia – which leaves them amongst the most disadvantaged people in our community. Access to a food bank, stocked entirely through donations, is one of The House of Welcome’s essential services. The opportunity to choose their own food from the food bank restores some dignity to people in desperate circumstances, and lets them know there are people in Australia who care about them.

The people of Lane Cove have supported the Food Bank with more than 3000 items of food and St Michael’s Lane Cove Social Justice Group aims for at least as many donations this year. It’s St Michael’s fourth year as Food Bank Partners with the House of Welcome – the successful program has grown steadily from year to year.

Look out for The House of Welcome collection bins at Coles and Woolworths in Lane Cove or take part in the Food Drive on the weekend of May 18-19 at St Michael’s Church. A list of ideal food items will be part of the signage, at the supermarket donation bins.

Taking philanthropy mainstream The term ‘philanthropy’ can evoke images of high net worth individuals bequeathing large sums of money to worthwhile causes, yet new ways of giving are making the space more accessible to everyone — regardless of how much they can afford to give.

By Jocelyn Biddle With social issues on this rise, it’s a necessary change as pressure on the charitable dollar increases. In 201718 alone, another 2830 charities commenced in Australia.

Sarah Wickham is the Policy & Research Manager with charity sector association Philanthropy Australia.

She says that the combination of complex social issues Sarah Wickham and our increasing social conscience has seen many new charities start up to address these concerns.

According to the 2016 Australian Charities Report published by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), there are now over 56,000 registered charities in Australia.

This number includes not-for-profit organisations such as universities, aged care centres, religious institutions and non-government schools.

However, despite the size of the sector, Australia still has fewer charities per capita than Canada, USA, UK and New Zealand.

Its survey of over 1500 Australians showed that charitable giving remains strong in Australia, with 5 in 6 Australians supporting charities or NFP organisations. Almost one third of respondents had volunteered in the past 12 months with key motivators including a responsibility to give back to the community (56%); to make the world a better place (50%); and the feeling they get when they volunteer (47%).

Crowdfunding With thousands of charities requiring support, the sector is continually looking for new ways to attract funding.

And one initiative that is having a very positive impact, particularly for grassroots charities, is crowdfunding.

A relatively new concept for Australia, it involves bringing groups of people together to jointly fund a project or social social change. Through leverage of the group, participants can see how their donation goes much further.

“Whereas philanthropy used to be about signing a cheque, there is now a changing trend as people recognise that giving your time is just as important. Volunteering can really increase a charity’s ability to make a difference,” says Wickham.

This is substantiated in JB Were’s ‘The Evolution of Philanthropy’ report released in June 2018, which showed that the top 10% of charities receive 94% of donations and bequests.

To address this gap, TFN holds events around Australia to which likely donors are invited to listen to pitches by smaller charities at the forefront of social change.

Following the pitches, audience members are invited to support their chosen charity.

“You don’t need to be wealthy to be a philanthropist,” says McDonald. “By pooling funds, our audience can see how they are making a difference with however much they can afford.

“Each charity delivers a compelling pitch and audience members can ask questions to better understand areas of need and how their money will be used. It’s a really powerful forum. When you’re in the moment and you are seeing first-hand what the charity is trying to achieve, it becomes very compelling.”

Wickham says that the traditional notion of philanthropy has evolved, so that it now comprises three elements – namely time, talent and treasure.

“Philanthropy applies to giving at every level. Regardless of how much you can afford, it’s about giving with intent, using a considered approach to identify your particular passion and helping to make a difference that’s within your means.”

Julie McDonald is the CEO of crowdfunding organisation The Funding Network (TFN). She says grassroots charities are undertaking great social innovation - often in areas not being covered off by larger charities however they receive little funding.

With anywhere from 150-250 people attending each event, an average $100,000 — $150,000 is raised in an evening. Through this forum, TFN has raised $10 million in the past 5 years.

TFN’s McDonald says that a democratic process is used to select the charities.

Anywhere from 30 to 60 charities apply for each event and an extensive due diligence process takes place (including review by an external panel) to develop the shortlist.

IMPACT100 Sydney North members last year voted to award $100,000 to SHINE for Kids.

Creating an impact

Dandelion Support Network (providing essential items for babies and children to families in need); and SISTER2sister (offering youth support and education programs for marginalised girls).

Another organisation engaged in crowdfunding for the charity sector is IMPACT100. Established in Sydney in 2015, IMPACT100 now has two chapters - one in the CBD and the other on the north shore.

Giving is an important practice for a connected country. But with so many charities needing support, it’s not surprising that people are looking at where their donations will have the highest impact – often on the basis of an emotional connection or past experience.

Each year, IMPACT100 creates a ‘giving circle’ comprising 100 members who each donate $1,000. The resulting $100,000 is then given as a ‘transformational grant’ to one charity selected by members.

Tina Jackson started the North Shore chapter of IMPACT100 in 2017 in a bid to help grow a culture of giving and to make philanthropy more accessible.

“People really want to make a difference in their local communities. The extent of the need is great and through our work, we are coming across many different approaches to addressing social issues, often driven by the passion of individuals.”

IMPACT100 receives around 60 applications each year from grassroots charities seeking support. Four finalists are shortlisted to pitch at their annual event, with members then voting to decide which one will receive the $100 thousand grant.

“The program is having a ripple effect, as members often decide to volunteer or do pro bono work after finding out more about the charities working in their community.”

Last year, IMPACT100 Sydney North selected SHINE for Kids (supporting young people with incarcerated parents) to receive the $100,000 grant. The three other finalists were the Pyjama Foundation (empowering children in foster care by giving them life skills and confidence);

Whether giving time, money or both, the good news is that giving circles and crowdfunding is opening up the world of philanthropy so that it is accessible to everyone – regardless of how much you can afford to donate.

A visit to Nepal in 2006 impacted Lane Cove’s Patrick Price to such an extent, that he decided to start a charity that is changing educational outcomes for thousands of children in that country.

Pat established the Centre for Learning and Children's Rights (CLCR) in 2007 and this Australian not-for-profit organisation is now delivering educational and humanitarian projects in Nepal through its volunteer work, project implementation and skills training.

Pat manages his work with the charity in his spare time, in between juggling commitments with his young family and his full-time position with the NSW Department of Education.

He’s back …

SALVOS CAN’T DO IT ALONE If you can spare a few hours on the weekend of 25-26 May, you can be part of Australia’s biggest annual doorknock, The Red Shield Appeal. This year’s goal is $8 million, because more Australians are turning to the Salvos as natural disasters hit and wages flatline while the cost of living rises.

In the past year, the Salvos helped 150,000 people with emergency relief, supported 38,000 people experiencing homelessness, 14,000 people overcoming addiction, gave more than 50,000 financial counselling sessions, and care to 5,000 people experiencing family violence.

“Hardship does not discriminate,” says The Salvation Army’s Captain Craig, Harlum. “The Red Shield Appeal is a fun and simple way that Australians can really make a difference in alleviating hardship faced by so many people, right across our nation.”

“We cannot do this alone,” Craig says.

Without the spray-can but wearing livid war-paint against what he sees as systemic corruption and deaf governments, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans is back standing as an independent for the House of Representatives in the election. The long-time Woolwich local aims to make government take a more universal approach to people’s needs. By Christine Powis

“Choice is not always as important as ‘universal service”

Many fondly recall the highly visible work of the BUGA UP crew’s graffiti sprayed across giant outdoor cigarette advertising in the early 1980s. Their scrawled words spearheaded the public and regulators’ swing against cigarette marketing, and tobacco advertising was barred in the next decades. Spokesman for BUGA UP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions), GP Arthur ChesterfieldEvans and fellow graffitists’ worked by torchlight so they were not exactly household identities at the time.

Since then Chesterfield-Evans became better known as a Democrat, entering NSW Parliament in 1998 and leaving in 2007 as the Democrats imploded – but not before he won Newscorp’s ‘Hardest-working MP’ award for the most questions and speeches in parliament, helping fulfil founding Democrat Don Chipp’s mission of “keeping the bastards honest”. He’s proud he was largely responsible for inquiries into mental and dental health, the funeral industry, DoCs, and riots in Redfern and Macquarie Fields. After NSW Parliament, Chesterfield-Evans turned livestock farmer in New Zealand for several years, before returning to work in Sydney as a GP specialising in accident victims’ treatment and claims.

His stand this year is driven by what he sees as governments’ relentless ability to ignore the public and listen to the big end of town. It’s not the first run he’s made for North Sydney – he was the 2016 Greens’ candidate against Liberal, Trent Zimmerman. This election is different, he says, partly because North Sydney voters are known to appreciate independents more than Greens and because the public is as fed up as he is.

“I’m so disillusioned with government, and I’m not alone. We used to call it corruption when one or two politicians did a deal for a kickback. Now it’s systemic: businesses tell government what they want to do – and government says ‘we’ll see what we can do’.

Gore Bay Terminal Newsletter We are publishing an additional piece to our bi-annual newsletter. As part of the penalty we received from the NSW Land and Environment Court in regards to a marine fuel oil leak which occurred from our Gore Bay Terminal in December 2016, we are required to publish the public notice in our newsletter.

Following the incident, we undertook a comprehensive investigation and as a result of the learnings from that, we have strengthened our processes and operations to ensure a similar incident does not occur in future.

These measures include an additional program of inspection, testing and maintenance on pipelines, and works to the concrete deck and kerb along the terminal’s water frontage. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and we regret and apologise that this incident occurred.

VIVA ENERGY AUSTRALIA PTY LTD CONVICTED AND PENALISED FOR OIL SPILL AT GORE COVE On 15 March 2019, the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales convicted Viva Energy Australia Pty Ltd (ACN 004 610 459) (Viva Energy) of offences of water pollution and licence contravention in breach of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997. Viva Energy had pleaded guilty to the charges.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) prosecuted Viva Energy for an incident which occurred on 30 December 2016, when marine fuel oil leaked from a 5 m long overhead pipe on Viva Energy’s fuel import and storage facility at the Gore Bay Terminal at Greenwich. The leak resulted in about 500 L of oil entering the waters of Gore Cove.

The leak occurred from two small holes in the pipe, which was covered with insulation at the time of the spill. When the insulation was later removed, it was evident that the pipe was visibly corroded.

The EPA was satisfied that clean-up of the affected shoreline had been achieved by 18 August 2017. Where impacts occurred arising from the Incident, those impacts are not likely to be permanent and recovery of the ecosystem can be expected. However, the timing of recovery cannot be reliably predicted. Since the incident occurred, Viva Energy has completed inspection and testing of all pipework at the Gore Bay Terminal that had not otherwise recently been tested.

Viva Energy cooperated with the EPA’s investigation and entered a plea of guilty to each of the offences.

The leak occurred as a result of Viva Energy’s failure to maintain the pipe in a proper and efficient condition, in breach of its environment protection licence. Viva Energy is unaware of any inspections, testing or maintenance having been carried out on the pipeline between its installation in the mid-1990s and the date of the spill.

On 15 March 2019, the Land and Environment Court convicted Viva Energy and ordered it to:

Approximately 350 m of shoreline in Gore Cove was affected by the oil. The incident caused environmental harm, including the death of oysters along the affected shoreline.

3. pay the EPA’s investigation costs of $3050; and

1. pay $100,000 to the Environment Trust for general environmental purposes; 2. pay the EPA’s legal costs as agreed or assessed;

4. place and pay for this notice.

Dozens of submissions about Greenwich Hospital redevelopment plans, submitted by residents, Lane Cove Council and others in favour of HammondCare’s concept plans, are still being reviewed by the Department of Environment and Planning and the proponent.

The concept plans must go to the IPC panel if there are more than 25 objecting submissions altogether or just one objecting submission from the local council. However Lane Cove Council has so far declined to say whether its submission to the Department was largely in favour or largely against HammondCare’s plans.

was concerning to have so much zoned hospital land set aside for residential use, as in HammondCare’s concept plan.

“Absolutely the IPC is truly independent – its independence was strengthened while I was Planning Minister.”

“It’s an aggressive concept plan,” said Anthony Roberts now the NSW Minister for Corrective Services and Counter–terrorism. “The hospital plays an important role and does a magnificent job. But these services are going to be required to be expanded further and further in coming decades. So having hospital lands set aside for residential use on such a scale is concerning.”

Mr Roberts believes the Council’s submission is critical and a more indepth submission from Lane Cove Council, with all its expertise, should get proportionately indepth consideration, but that all submissions would be thoroughly considered.

Mr Roberts extended the submission period till mid-April to allow residents to comment as fully as possible. He said HammondCare should look closely at all responses and be cognisant of the fact that such a high level of residential development will impact the area, the community and, crucially, the future of the hospital.

He believes an IPC hearing is the best place for the submissions to be aired and the plans to be considered, that the IPC would have at least one public hearing, and he assured TVO that any panel selected by the IPC would be independent.

Cherish your hearing because about 1 in 6 Australians are affected by hearing loss and, by the time we’re 75, half of us are affected.

It’s good to know that all babies are electronically tested for deafness in hospital these days so major problems are picked up early. I won’t discuss children born with deafness and their special needs. Nor the incredible story of the Australian company, Cochlear, and its hearing implants, which needs a whole article to itself. Best to start with the anatomy of hearing because the ear and the way it works is ‘truly awesome’ as kids say today – or was it yesterday?

Brief anatomy lesson The ear is made up of three compartments.

• T he outer ear is what you can see, down to the ear drum or tympanic membrane.

• T he middle ear is the chamber with those three tiny bones that conduct air wave energy from the eardrum to the nerve receptors in the inner ear. It connects to the back of the throat via the eustachian tube. This tube lets air in and cleansing mucus out.

• T he inner ear contains the amazing nerve-end structures that turn the compressive energy of a sound wave into nerve impulses that go to the brain to be interpreted as hearing.

The balance organ lives there too, and its impulses become part of the hearing nerve called the eighth cranial nerve.

Conductive deafness In conductive deafness the airwave message isn’t getting through to the hearing nerves that send hearing messages to the brain. Examples are a punctured ear drum, a fluid buildup – glue ear – in the middle ear chamber and bone growth blocking the outer ear canal – ‘swimmers’ ear. The latter is seen in especially in cold water devotees.

This type of hearing loss can often be retrieved by surgery. You’ve heard of kids with ‘glue ear’ having grommets to release fluid buildup behind the eardrum? That’s a good example. All are middle ear phenomena.

Sensorineural – SN loss To quote the Mayo Clinic – ‘Sensorineural hearing loss develops when the part of the ear that changes sound into electrical information, the cochlea, and the part of the ear that sends electrical information to the brain, the eighth cranial nerve, is damaged.’

This loss is usually permanent and can be caused by age, disease or exposure to noise and even chemicals. Doctors are hugely concerned for our young who ghetto-blast themselves or turn up the sound in their ear buds and tune out to the world. The ear mechanism can only tolerate so much assault before failing!

This occurs when the nerve itself affected.

Sometimes this is acute with a sudden loss. This is a medical emergency and is treated with high dose corticosteroids.

I’ve had several of these patients over the years. A general feature is trouble hearing in a noisy background. Agony for the listener and frustrating for the speaker!

I almost forgot the male genetic defect that affects all men in marriage and longterm relationships Mens’ brains and hearing can only cope with a few megabytes of incoming verbal information at a time. Whereas women usually saturate their airwaves with gigabyte downloads.

You’ve seen them walking along. He is looking ahead. She is looking at him and talking to him in the hope he will listen and understand.

Seriously – symptoms to look for?

If you’ve noticed a muffling of sounds, have trouble understanding words, are asking others to speak to your face and slowly and distinctly. You’re turning up the TV and radio. Now you’re hating parties and noisy restaurants. Avoiding some social settings. And more – it’s time to see the doctor.

What to do?

As above, causes can vary from a fluid buildup to nerve damage to a tumour, from a wax blockage to nerve loss.

IS IT A CRACKED TOOTH?

You might have a cracked tooth if you experience sharp pain when biting.

Cracked teeth are relatively common and a generally a by-product of having fillings as well as bruxism, or night-time teeth grinding.

Amalgam (silver or black metal) fillings are notorious for causing the right conditions for crack development in teeth. Because amalgam has a property called dynamic creep, every time pressure is applied to the top of the filling, it deforms slightly by pushing outwards against the walls of the tooth which contains it. After enough time, cracks can form in the tooth structure, eventually leading to the loss of a portion of the tooth or in the worst case, a complete split.

Bruxism provides intense forces which can cause hairline cracks to form and then develop to become significant,

tooth-threatening fractures. Unfilled teeth can crack under repeated grinding stresses, but generally speaking, filled teeth are at a greater risk: The continuity of the tooth is interrupted by the filling, making it more susceptible to fracturing.

Teeth that have had root canal treatment will fracture at a higher rate than living teeth, because they lose their flexibility. Without its active blood supply, the tooth becomes more brittle. A good analogy is a dead stick compared with a green stick — one snaps while the other bends.

What can be done?

Firstly, controlling bruxism forces is a good idea. Wearing a night guard to keep forces off teeth works well as do muscle-relaxing injections to the jaw muscles.

Secondly, removing the cracked portion from teeth helps them to avoid splitting. Replacing amalgam fillings and associated cracks with modern ceramics such as CEREC will

actually serve to protect the teeth from cracking in future, such are their toothstrengthening properties.

By far the greatest number of unsalvageable split teeth occur on teeth treated by molar root canal that have not had a crown so it is considered virtually mandatory to place a crown after root canal treatment.

If you suspect you have a crack, conservative early treatment is best.

Leaving it too late may result in root canal treatment if the crack makes it through to the living pulp of the tooth.

Advanced cracks which go beyond the pulp and through the roots of the tooth can only result in extraction of the tooth.

Of course, regular check-ups will allow your dentist to detect cracks early. 

My 95-year-old mum asked my sister to take her to the funeral of a friend.

Arriving late, there were no orders of service left. Following the funeral, they attended the wake. As they munched on sandwiches and drank tea, a woman tapped mum on the shoulder and said, “Hello Dorothy”; Mum turned around and promptly turned ashen. When the woman finally left, mum informed my sister that she thought the woman whose funeral they had just attended was the one they were just speaking to. They hastily asked someone for the order of service to identify the correct deceased. Oops!

Making the most of it…

I’m writing from onboard an all-inclusive cruise, where you don’t worry about shelling out extra dollars for your excursions. All you need decide is which ones you’d like to do. Therein lies the difficulty or, rather, difficulties.

As the cruise has progressed and I’ve experienced almost all I elected to do, it has become crystal clear I didn’t do enough homework. I failed to research fuller details about the attractions of each excursion, how likely each was to hold my interest and, equally importantly, how easy or difficult each was. I didn’t look at excursions I selected in terms of the whole itinerary, instead selecting in a piecemeal fashion what seemed the best options.

And I am not I alone. Several others have remarked they’ve seen too many temples and shrines. For others, it’s too many gardens. My own husband is now cherry-blossomed out and wonders why the 1,000 perfectly good photos from last year, or even 12 years ago will not suffice! Almost at the end now, we’ve decided to forego the last couple of excursions in favour of our own exploration although we have effectively paid for them by way of a higher cruise fare.

Of course, I have still enjoyed myself – and learned heaps about places I’d never before visited. Some were stellar, a couple of others rather mediocre but all up, it has been a great experience.

My disappointment is not just in my own failure to do better research but also in the cruise line’s descriptions. I know they are pretty much just passing on descriptions given by ground operators but these lacked a lot of useful detail – why you might find this tour appealing, why it is significant enough to include and how much might be possible for someone with some physical restrictions.

Almost all tours on our cruise itinerary were described as having either ‘a reasonable amount’ or ‘a lot’ of walking such that one of my own group, who could not walk long distances, had elected not to do any excursions. Yet David and I found there were several where our friend would have confidently managed enough of the tour at her own pace without inconveniencing others, and thoroughly enjoyed herself. I appreciate there do need to be guidelines but the ones provided seemed to sway too far towards caution and discouragement without offering a compromise option.

I feel more thought could have gone into providing a better range of tours, and perhaps identifying them as cultural or historical or lifestyle. There was a lot of sameness. One passenger said she would like to have done ikebana, another to have had more food experiences. For example, we went to two fabulous fish markets where you can select your fish downstairs and take it upstairs to your choice of restaurant for cooking. But we were only there to look not cook and taste …. How wonderful that would have been!

While all cruise lines are sensitive about ‘safe’ experiences, and possibly Australians are more adventurous than our American cruise counterparts, couldn’t we have some exciting options?

Exactly the same principles can be applied to coach tours. Be it cruise or coach, or your own individually constructed holiday, sightseeing is an

integral part of your journey. This is why a good company will differentiate between ‘seeing’ or ‘viewing’ and ‘entering’. And even then it might not be as you had anticipated – our tour yesterday took us to Tokyo Tower but disappointingly only to the first level where the view is less dramatic.

I’m considering putting my hand up for a new job. If any cruise or coach tour would like me to road-test their excursions prior to sale, I’m here …

In the meantime, I encourage you to maximise your holiday enjoyment by fully researching the tours on offer, prior to departure. At Trendsetter, we’re happy to guide you. 

You can expect some great events this season as a result of LCFC partnerships with new and returning local sponsors, and LCFC’s work alongside Northern Suburbs Football Association.

In our local area and beyond, all eyes are on the Matildas as they begin their World Cup race to gold. One key focus this year for LCFC is to encourage more girls and women into football and support them when they join. Football NSW has aligned this year’s Female Football Week with the launch of the Women’s World Cup and LCFC is following suit by getting behind Female Football Week at a club level.

Female Football Week will be celebrated from May 25 to June 2, and Lane Cove Football Club will host a LCFC Female Club Celebration on the Sunday Game Day at Blackman on June 2. With help from our 2019 sponsors, our girls and women will showcase their skills in a Blackman Park match day for most teams, plus BBQ and other surprises from our friends at NSFA – do we hear cross-bar challenge?

Internally, the Club will organise a week of fun for our teams with the return of the fluoro-themed night, Girls and Women’s teams mentor session and a Women’s Skills Workshop in partnership with NSFA.

The world of publishing and its ubiquitous tension between commercial viability and literary merit is explored by John Purcell in his intriguing novel, The Girl on the Page. The central character, Amy Winston, is talented, beautiful, independently wealthy and emotionally damaged. Once an aspiring writer herself, and still working in publishing, Amy’s real talent is for nurturing mediocre writers to help them produce bestsellers. Review by Jacqui Serafim.

Amy is challenged, however, when her boss demands she work with the famous literary author, Helen Owen. Helen and Malcolm Owen have been married for fifty years. They are bastions of great literary writing, and uncompromising in their pursuit of perfection in an increasingly commercial world.

Helen is now in her eighties and is tired of watching younger, less talented writers make fortunes while she still scrapes by after a lifetime of truly great writing, She has taken a sevenfigure advance from Amy’s publishing company for a promised bestseller but has not delivered the manuscript.

Amy’s role is to procure the manuscript from Helen and ensure the company can recoup its investment by delivering a bestseller. But Helen has come to regret her rash commitment to delivering a novel so far beneath her usual literary standard and one which will result in the loss of her husband’s respect.

As Helen battles with the risks of losing her house or losing her husband, Malcolm mourns the loss of the wife he knew who would never compromise her writing for mere money. Amy finds herself drawn into their confusion and pain and comes to love and respect these enormously talented octogenarians … and conflicted as to how to help them.

The story unfolds to reveal Amy’s emotional damage, evident in her wanton promiscuity and in the intrigue she brings to her business and personal relationships. We are also exposed to the heartbreaking consequences for the Owens arising from their lifelong single-minded devotion to their writing and their absorption in each other. The heart of the novel, however, is Amy’s developing relationship with Helen and Malcolm. As Amy comes under their influence, she begins to question her role in the publishing world and to re-examine her relationships.

The Girl on the Page is a fascinating novel with an engaging plot in which the publishing world and its financial deals and awards systems is unmasked but which also explores the nature of literature, how we define it and how we recognise it. The pages are full of literary references as the various characters wax lyrical about their influences. Don’t miss the recommended reading lists at the end! Purcell has delivered a novel both entertaining and thought-provoking. Flood disaster warning Unless you live in the bush or near flood-prone waterways, you probably think your house is relatively safe from a disaster of the watery kind … by Liz Foster I mean, how likely is any of that stuff they show on insurance commercials? Like the one where the little girl is dancing indoors with an umbrella while water prettily showers over her?

Or so I thought until last week, when I turned on the kitchen tap and a sound akin to Niagara Falls exploded from the sink.

In the two minutes it took to turn off mains water and grab the nearest neighbour, the kitchen floor was under about an inch of water. Too much to mop. The plumber duly came and found a huge tear in the hot water hose. “Lucky you were home,” he said. “It only blew when I turned on the tap,” I said.

He shrugged. The hose was hanging by a shred, could have gone at any time. Apparently, his girlfriend’s parents had the same problem. Only theirs was in their upstairs ensuite.

And they weren’t home. "Like a masochist, I need to know the worst."

Turns out water damage is a big deal. Their whole house was practically written off, the entire upstairs saturated and ruined, water soaking right through the ceiling which then collapsed under the weight. They had to move out for six months.

I feel faint at this news and start catastrophising. Like a masochist, I need to know the worst.

I do a sweep of my house. Having not scheduled a flood in my calendar, I’ve neglected to clear the floors. The living area’s clearish but closer inspection of the dining room floor reveals my daughter’s HSC textiles bag, a bodice that’s already taken hours and hours of painstaking stitching, ruching, smocking and other techniques mystifying to the non-sewer (me). Plus all the various threads, bobbins and whatnots purchased specially and at vast expense.

My skin is clammy, and I need to sit down.

The same daughter isn’t known for her tidiness, so pretty much every item of clothing she owns is strewn around her bedroom floor. My laptop, my source of work and income, is on the low coffee table.

Worse than all that, what would our dog have done? Jumped onto the forbidden couch, or raced upstairs where he’s also not allowed? Then again, he loves water so maybe he would have just dog paddled serenely around until help came.

I’m picturing getting home to release a tsunami of water, the dog cresting the wave and surfing gaily down the front path.

Happily, none of that happened. The tap was replaced for the princely sum of about $100 all up and I can breathe easy again. I might make sure the dog stays outside when we’re not home, though, just to be on the safe side. 

I know many people use the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre (700,000 people per year!) so I am pleased to update you on plans for our new outdoor pool. Council has now awarded the tender for the re-build and work should commence in June 2019.

We are therefore still on track to re-open for the start of the 2020 swim season.

Also on track for opening next year is our Rosenthal Project (more news below). This progress was signalled by the recent opening of interim new parking on the site for 45 cars. Entry is from Birdwood Lane and the first two hours are free.

Parking has also been improved at the Market Square Car Park. The exit gate was updated in November 2018 and traffic backlogs at peak times have disappeared. Payment systems have also been augmented with the ability to pay by phone on exit.

All these improvements and more are reflected in Council’s delivery plan which is updated annually. The latest plan for the 2019/2020 financial year is now available on Council’s website and I look forward to receiving your feedback. The plan is backed by Council’s latest draft budget and I am pleased to report that Council remains debt free and in a very positive financial position with a responsible surplus projected.

Lane Cove Gift Card

After receiving hundreds of votes from the community, Lane Cove Council is pleased to reveal the name of its eagerly-anticipated new precinct on Rosenthal Avenue.

Launched in early May, Lane Cove Gift Cards can be redeemed at shops, cafes, restaurants and other retail outlets in Lane Cove.

The Canopy is set to be one of Sydney’s most vibrant community spaces, home to a new park, community stage, shops, cafes, a children’s playground and a 500-space underground car park.

The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2020.

Your Lane Cove Gift Card may be purchased at registered stores or at the Council Civic Centre located at 48 Longueville Road. The minimum load amount is $30.

New Off-Leash Dog Park Join us for the grand opening of the Blackman Park Off-Leash Dog Park in Lane Cove West on Sunday 5 May from 9:30am – 11:30am. The special event includes local vets, a dog nutritionist, children’s activities, free coffee and free dog treats.

The park provides a secure area for play, important if your dog does not always ‘come’ on command. There’s also agility play equipment which can be fun for your dog while exercising and testing their skills.

Helen Street Reserve: Council recently undertook works at Helen Street Reserve to repair drainage and re-turf some damaged areas.

Works were completed in April.

Azaleas in Lane Cove: Council began rejuvenation of 11 plant bays along Epping Road, from Coxs Lane towards Centennial Avenue, in April. The works will include structural brick repair, pruning of overhanging branches, enhancing Azaleas in the top terrace, planting of native ground covering plants in the lower terrace and irrigation.

It is expected that the works for this section will take approximately three months to complete.

Accessible playspace update. At its April meeting Council resolved to support the Boronia Park North West site, identified in the Boronia Park Plan of Management (PoM), as the preferred location for the proposed inclusive playspace.

Community consultation regarding the preferred site will be undertaken as part of the broader community engagement process during the update of the Boronia Park PoM. Council will also approve the Inclusive Playspace Project Panel to seek funds via donations or sponsorship to match the ‘Everyone Can Play’ Grant and will look for an opportunity in September to hold a community event to raise additional funds for the playground.

Council’s new-look website coming soon. Council is excited to announce the launch of a new Hunter’s Hill Council website, which will go live on 30 June 2019. The new website will provide sensible navigation, relevant content, current news, events and more. This month we have the beautiful Gai-mariagal Festival which I encourage people to get out and attend. The Gai-mariagal Festival raises awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Northern Sydney region and includes workshops, art exhibitions, films, talks, and performances including Children's Voices for Reconciliation. On a personal note, I’ve been given the honour of serving in our NSW Government Cabinet as Minister for Counter-Terrorism and Corrections. Sensibly, the focus of my Government is to reduce reoffending. That’s why over the past twelve months we have established 10 high-intensity program units that help deliver rehabilitation programs. We also have specific units for Aboriginal inmates and female inmates to ensure their particular needs are met. Our improved model provides a more consistent approach to case-managing offenders throughout their contact with the correctional system. I’m proud to join the effort to improve the safety and wellbeing of our state.

Federal election 2019 Australians go to the ballot box on Saturday 18 May, 2019 to make a decision about who will govern Australia for the next three years.

It’s an important choice.

As your representative in the Australian Parliament, I have worked hard over the last three years to support our community and to help protect those things that make our area special.

Working in partnership with the community, we have been able to achieve a great deal with federal support for many new projects and services in our part of Sydney.

Support from the Australian government for these projects is possible because of our strong economy – be it the financial support we are providing to help the state government build the Sydney Metro rail line or for the new harbourside park at former HMAS Platypus in Neutral Bay, or increased funding for local schools and health care. I am particularly pleased we have been able to lend a hand to so many community organisations who work to make our community stronger.

I am also pleased I was able to secure $2 million to help Lane Cove Council rebuild the Lane Cove Olympic Pool. With this funding certainty, Council can now get on with the job of building an even better outdoor pool for our community.

Anzac Day It is always an honour to attend local Anzac Day services and join our community as it reflects and pays tribute to Anzacs past and present. Some of the very best of Australia’s traditions and character are on show on Anzac Day. Whether it be mateship, toughness or cheerfulness under pressure, these qualities are strongly bound to our national character and what it means to be an Australian.

This year one of the key focuses is on military nurses. Ever since the first nurses sailed for the Boer War in 1900, Australian nurses have served in all the theatres of war and conflict around the world. They have worked in hazardous conditions, endured extreme discomfort and tragically sometimes lost their lives.

For small and medium sized businesses, we are extending the instant asset write-off threshold to $30,000 and expanding access to businesses with an annual turnover of less than $50 million. This builds on already-delivered lower company tax rates for businesses of this size.

Anzac Day will always be a time when we reflect not just on those who served and those who lost their lives. It is a time when we remember all those impacted including those who waited for loved ones to return and the families that were forever changed by all the wars and conflicts in which Australia has taken part.

The budget also confirms funding for our plan to ensure Australia meets its Paris Agreement targets for climate change – including the expansion of the Snowy Hydro and support for the Tasmanian hydro ‘Battery of the Nation” project.

I know our veterans are very grateful for the strong support residents lend to Anzac commemorations and 2019 has been no different in this regard.

Lest we forget.

A strong economy is more than just a set of numbers and statistics – it is about ensuring all Australians have better opportunities and the Federal Government can provide the services that make Australia the envy of the world.

This year, as in previous years, we have more than 25 wineries offering tastings, amazing boutique food and goodies stalls and lots and lots of great restaurants and cafes represented. It’s fabulous day that draws 9,000 Sydneysiders and is an entirely volunteer-run event so all proceeds go to local, community-based organisations.

Baby portraits are a specialty of Dee Jackson’s, guest artist for the Lane Cove Art Society’s March meeting.

behaviour can compromise their true character which the portrait aims to harness. As a consequence, Dee sometimes requests favourite photos as an extra aid for getting the essence of the sitter. On occasion, Dee has referred to photos because she has been asked to modify a portrait of a pet because its features had changed with age!

Perhaps the biggest challenge for Dee is to capture what she sees as the ‘soul’ of the sitter. This is always vital for a portraitist. However it’s been especially challenging on occasions when the sitter is not expected to live long, as has been the case with a handful of portraits of elderly people or a younger person with a life-limiting condition. The portrait becomes a memorial to the sitter and an even more cherished artwork.

Dee feels privileged to share these precious moments in a person’s life and is committed to getting the strongest likeness possible.

As Helen’s likeness emerged on the paper, the magic of watercolour became evident. Lost and found edges were apparent. Layers were built up and stronger tones were used to enhance form. Thank you, Dee, for giving us an insight into your uplifting world of watercolour portraits.

How much soul is in your art?

The guest demonstrator for the March meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society was the well known portrait artist Dee Jackson. Armed with examples of her work, Dee was courageous enough to also do a live demonstration using an audience member, Helen, as her model.

Winsor and Newton watercolours were used. Only three colours were selected namely, permanent alizarin crimson(red), French ultramarine(blue) and quinacridone gold. Hot-pressed, 300gsm paper was chosen and a sable brush was used.

Often a thumbnail study is initially done.

It’s a way of working through the desired composition which is then enlarged using a grid. Proportions are maintained by taking this approach. However in this demonstration, Dee decided to start drawing the portrait using her brush.

The shape of the face was outlined.

Shadows were important aids as she detected the underlying structure of the subject. Dee constantly searched for the image as she guided her loaded brush over the paper.

Dee has painted numerous portraits though not always of people. She also does pet portraits of dogs and cats.

Irrespective of the subject, her approach is the same: “Let things happen and paint what you see. Just play and see what you can do”.

Challenges sometimes arise especially when dealing with lively children. Their

Art therapy is where a person/client makes art in a therapy/counselling relationship. Being ‘good at art’ is not important. Sometimes it is easier to express, describe or talk about difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences by making art in a comfortable environment. Additionally, strong emotions can be translated through the use of materials, metaphor and symbols.

The art therapist can support a person to explore the art object as a powerful container where new meanings and understandings can be created.

These sessions are led by our Master of Art Therapy intern, Kate Scholes, who is mentored by our art therapist-inresidence Anne Buckingham.

BARE - the musical The off-Broadway musical Bare takes audiences on an emotional journey. Peter and Jason have fallen in love, but they struggle with fears of revealing their true selves to such an unforgiving world.

Perhaps the best kept secrets are best kept secret?

This coming-of-age pop opera is staged in a Catholic boarding school in the early 2000s and looks set to become a classic of our times. Director Kathryn Thomas says Bare is incredibly important in the current social climate especially regarding attitudes towards the queer community and mental health.

“I love this show because it captures the vulnerability and struggle within so many facets of adolescence.

From sexuality to body image, these characters remind us of what it is to be a teenager and how hard it is to love yourself, let alone another person. There is also much fun to be had with this show in its goofiness and joyful soul music.”

Co-director Isaac Downey is especially excited to share a new story in which acceptance, blind faith and love all resonate.

“As a gay man having gone through the Catholic schooling system, a lot of the content hit hard: what if Peter or Jason were me?” said Downey. “With that in mind, I wanted to focus on helping our actors deliver an authentic high school experience and to outline the honesty and humour of people you may not even know are in your corner.”

Hope shines through

Happy Anniversary Maria and Joe Lazzaro married April 18, 1959 Many locals will join us in congratulating Joe and Mary Lazzaro on their 60th wedding anniversary last month.

The Lazzaros ran ‘Lawrence Fruit and Vegetables’ at 113 Longueville Road Lane Cove for 35 years from 1963 until 1996 and are well known in Lane Cove and at St Michael’s Catholic Church, also in Longueville Road.

Joe Lazzaro came from Lipari, an island in Italy, when he was 17. Maria Allotta was born in Marsfield, Sydney and became a primary school teacher at Santa Sabina College, Strathfield. They still live in the Riverview home they moved into in 1975, and are an inspiration to the family.

Their children their children Rick, Lisa and Paul, report the Lazzaros are now enjoying a happy retirement with seven grandchildren and a great granddaughter who have brought much joy into their lives.

“After working seven days a week for 35 years,” said Lisa, “they are enjoying wonderful outings with Sydney Community Services, and have made many friends on seniors outings and luncheons, and often meet up with many former fruit shop customers.”

Congratulations and many happy returns.

The Christchurch massacre sent shockwaves across the world. It demonstrated racism at its ugliest. It is in sharp contrast, however, to my weekly experience amongst the Meeting House playgroup in Lane Cove North where I volunteer. Serving coffee and cake to the mums (mainly) for more than four years now, I hear the joys and sorrows of their demanding early parenthood journeys. Over the years, there has been a wonderful and changing multicultural mix of people. I long ago gave up trying to identify each race and accent! I observe more of a ‘common story’ of being parents, often in a new land, rather than differences between them. As I watch the ever-changing group from the kitchen servery, my heart warms to see children of different ethnicities playing together, while their mums share tips and tales.

Another pre-schooler’s mum has been a standout lately: Jacinda Ardern. What wisdom and grace this young woman has shown leading New Zealand’s response to the massacre. What has made her so outstanding? I saw a huge amount of empathy when Ardern hugged a grieving Muslim lady. She wore black and a loose head scarf – a sign of identification with Muslim people – while maintaining her own identity. She showed courage, as she was no doubt aware that many might not appreciate her show of solidarity with Muslims. Her decisiveness and wisdom were present in large measure: refusing to name the perpetrator so as to discourage copycat behaviour; sending off an envoy to Turkey to quickly end a diplomatic crisis; changing gun laws in a week! She also named her country’s positive values for all to hear.

In the midst of hate, the light of love appeared and spread. Other faiths and peoples embraced Muslims in a public show of support.

A younger generation is largely dispensing with outdated hostilities and fears regarding race and religion. By discussing what we have in common – rather than our differences – the light of truth reveals misplaced fears.

Be a leader and a peace maker by choosing to identify our common humanity amidst difference.
