EDITOR'S NOTE It’s exciting times with the dining scene in Lane Cove. Hoarding has been concealing a hive of activity as fit-outs take place across several locations in the Village.

This month all will be revealed, with the doors opening on new Middle Eastern, French and Mexican restaurants. Speaking with each of the owners of these new businesses, it’s clear the commitment and dedication that goes into such an undertaking. They have signed leases; invested in fitting out their new locations; sought to employ locals to help run their businesses, and they are all super-excited about welcoming the Lane Cove community.

These new restaurants will join other relative newcomers - Shorties and Encasa - both of which have already made a great impact with their food, service and atmosphere. To find out more about the new generation in eating out in Lane Cove, turn to page 4.

Hunters Hill is the place to be in May as it kicks off its annual Art Exhibition on May 11th, which extends through to May 20th. There’s also Art History tours taking place, plus the annual Food & Wine Festival on Sunday 6th May. To learn more details on times and venues, see inside.

The new generation There’s a certain vibe around Lane Cove as we enter a new era in eating out. The entry of several new players onto the dining scene will provide locals with greater choice than ever before. By Jocelyn Biddle.

Whereas Italian, pizza, Thai and sushi dining options have been available for quite some time, the addition of Spanish, Middle Eastern, French and Mexican cuisines is really going to spice up our local food scene.

Restaurants including Lillah, Four Frogs Creperie and Guzman Y Gomez are placing the finishing touches on their new venues before their openings this month.

Trevor Blye is the man behind Lillah.

This much-anticipated restaurant located on Longueville Road is scheduled to open in early May. A Hunters Hill resident, Trevor identified a gap in the market for quality, innovative Middle Eastern cuisine at an approachable price point.

“Lillah is a casual, family oriented restaurant serving the highest quality food without being too intimidating.

This restaurant is all about bringing people together, taking them on a journey with flavour and fine produce and allowing them to experience thousands of years of culture and family traditions in a fun, food-filled environment.”

The menu is made for sharing with local produce delivered daily. Meats slowcooked on the custom-made Parilla-style grill are designed to enhance the ethnic charcoal flavours of the dishes.

Since November, Trevor has worked tirelessly to complete an impressive fit-out of the restaurant located on Longueville Road. marble surfaces and an open plan kitchen which will allow diners to see the theatre unfold.

Clearly a labour of love, there has been great attention to detail and Trevor has worked closely with Roy Ner, acclaimed chef of Nour restaurant in Surry Hills, in the design of the restaurant and menu. Lunch and dinner will be offered daily, as well as a brunch sitting on weekends.

Located just next door is Encasa Restaurant, which has really made its mark on the local dining scene since opening here 18 months ago.

Local residents and owners Maria Barona and Pachi Rodriguez recognised a gap in the local dining scene in terms of a restaurant that was a bit different to the more traditional options of pizza, pasta or Thai.

Offering a great fit out and authentic Spanish cuisine, Encasa has become a popular destination as evidenced by its packed tables every Friday and Saturday night. With a young family themselves, Maria and Pachi said that it was also really important for them to create a restaurant that welcomed kids.

Maria and Pachi also operate a restaurant in Pitt Street, together with two shops in Chifley Square and Westfield Pitt Street that offer Spanish style baguettes to take away.

According to Maria, the secret to their local success is offering really good quality food in a non-pretentious environment.

“Lane Cove locals tend to be well travelled and they expect quality food and service that is well priced.

As an authentic Spanish restaurant, we’re offering a point of difference to everything else that’s available locally, which has been really important to our success.”

Maria welcomes the new restaurants coming into the area.

Natalie and Ruben Henriques are the franchisees behind Lane Cove’s new Guzman y Gomez restaurant.

“Previously if you wanted to try something a bit different, you had to travel to Crows Nest. The greater variety available locally is only going to help attract more people so that Lane Cove becomes the new Crows Nest.”

Another restaurant with a difference to hit the local dining scene is Four Frogs Creperie.

Specialising in sweet and savoury crepes, Four Frogs Creperie was first established in Mosman in 2013 by four Frenchmen. The business partners have since expanded into Randwick, Circular Quay and now Lane Cove.

According to Operations Manager Anthony Sebert, they had been looking at Lane Cove as a destination for quite some time and had just been waiting for the right site.

“We liked the demographics of the area, with plenty of young families. We will be offering what we feel are Sydney’s finest, most authentic crepes - sweet for dessert, and savoury (we call them galettes) - coupled with an excellent standard of table service.”

Opening in late May, the new creperie is located in the site previously tenanted

by Zest café. The space is currently being refitted, with an open plan kitchen that can be seen from the street.

“We use the traditional recipes and techniques used by the skilled crepiers of Bretagne, which is the region in France where crepes originate.

Four Frogs Creperie plans to open from 11am till late on Tuesday through Thursday, and from 7.30am till late on Friday through Sunday. It will be fully licensed.

For business partners Steve Jones and Phil Jensen, opening their new venture Shorties Bar & Dining in Longueville Road last November is proving to have been the right decision.

This is the third venue for Steve and Phil, who also run SBK (Small Bar

& Kitchen) in Kirribilli and the The Hayberry in Crows Nest.

“We’re all about the local village.

When this site became available, it ticked most of the boxes in terms of space, functionality and location.

Everyone knows everyone here – it’s a really nice neighbourhood and we’re really pleased to be part of it.”

Located at the top of Longueville Road, Shorties offers food designed to be shared, with an emphasis on Australian produce, together with a great selection of wines, craft beers and an extensive cocktail list.

It is proving to be a real hit, particularly with women looking to catch up on a night out.

“We wanted to offer something different and we’re delighted to be part of this new generation of restaurants in the area. It’s all about keeping things fresh and giving locals a choice.”

Apart from Middle Eastern, French and Spanish, another new cuisine that we are adding to the local food scene is Mexican.

Guzman y Gomez is another eagerly anticipated new entrant which will be opening in the site previously occupied

by Epitome, directly opposite Bakers Delight.

Passionate about all things Mexican, Guzman y Gomez prides itself on offering made-to-order, nutritious fast food.

Natalie and Ruben Henriques are the couple behind this new restaurant, which they are adding to stores they manage in Rhodes and Top Ryde.

“We have been looking to set up in Lane Cove for quite some time and have been waiting for the right site to come up. We saw big potential in the area as it is underserviced in terms of quick, casual, convenient fast food.”

With no microwaves, all food is prepared using fresh, whole produce and authentic ingredients with no preservatives or additives and using free range chicken. Think nachos, tacos, quesadillas, tortillas, salsa, guacamole and churros. GYG can also be delivered by ordering on Deliveroo or UberEats.

And locals don’t have too much longer to wait, with the grand opening taking place on Thursday 10th May. “We’ll be kicking off with our free burrito day. From 12pm to 7pm, customers can come along to have a regular sized burrito and enjoy Mexican music and entertainment at the same time, including our live mariachi band.”

With these new entrants – and potentially more to follow as other sites become available, such as that previously occupied by The Lodge eating out in Lane Cove has never been better. █ THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 273 I MAY 2018 I 5

Event submissions open for Lane Cove Festival Local community groups are invited to submit their September events to be included in the 2018 Lane Cove Festival program.

A broad range of activities will feature in this year’s Festival, which aims to support community groups by providing an opportunity for them to raise their profile with free event listings in the annual program. The Festival will be held from 1st to 30th September, with a program launch event on Friday 10th August.

Council to monitor new housing density code The NSW State Government has adopted a Medium Density Housing Code, which will make changes to exempt and complying developments.

The Medium Density Housing Code, which takes effect in July 2018, has been designed to encourage a greater diversity of housing options by making it easier to build medium density homes that integrate with existing neighbourhoods.

It includes provisions that allows dual occupancies, manor houses and multi-dwelling housing (terraces) to be undertaken through the Exempt and Complying development pathway if development is permissible in the current zoning and meets specified standards. Non-complying types of development are subject to the normal DA process.

At its April meeting, Council agreed to write to the Minister for Planning and Department of Planning asking that Lane Cove be exempt from the provisions in the Code that permit multi-dwelling houses (terraces) and manor homes for low density residential (R2) zones, as this is not in

line with the current LEP or character of Lane Cove.

In time for its May meeting, Council will also investigate and submit a report regarding the inclusion of the current DCP minimum lot size of 750m2 in the Lane Cove LEP; together with the removal of multi-dwelling housings within the permitted uses for low density residential (R2) zones within the Lane Cove LEP. It also agreed to monitor and review any unintended or unexpected consequences of the new Code.

Council has in place a number of controls (particularly lot and subdivision requirements) which will continue to apply to dual occupancies and multi-dwelling housing.

Council also recently finalised an amendment to its Local Environmental Plan to prohibit all forms of subdivision for dual occupancies, which took full effect from December 2017.

HELP YOURSELF TO A BOOK

Two new street libraries have been installed locally to encourage the community to exchange and borrow books with their neighbours.

The libraries are located at Yorks Corner in Riverview and Helen Street Reserve in Lane Cove North. Two young local artists, Maya Cheesman and Isabelle Shepherd, were commissioned to paint original artworks on the libraries.

Members of the public are welcome to donate, borrow or swap any book housed in the libraries.

Budget and community plan to go on public exhibition Council’s 2018/2019 Draft Budget and Draft Community Strategic Plan is on public exhibition until the end of May to provide the community with the opportunity to comment on proposed initiatives and actions.

Following this consultation period, a report will be prepared for Council’s consideration at the June Ordinary Council Meeting.

DRAFT BUDGET Within its proposed budget, Council is continuing with a period of significant investment in infrastructure, aimed at providing long-term cultural, social and economic benefits to the Lane Cove community and visitors to the area.

This includes: Rosenthal Car Park redevelopment - $30,000,000 has been provided for the continued redevelopment of Rosenthal Car Park.

Development has been staged over four years with additional funding of $30,000,000 provided for 2018/19 and $15,000,000 for 2018/19.

Mowbray Precinct – Open Space - $3,000,000 has been provided for the construction of new open space and active recreation facilities in the Mowbray Precinct to cater for the additional population growth.

Aquatic Centre Olympic Pool and Grandstand - The Olympic Pool was built in 1961 and concern has been raised about its remaining lifespan. The grandstand has also reached the end of its economic life.

Council staff over the next year will progress planning for the replacement of both structures.

Traffic signals - Funds have been allocated to upgrade traffic signals at Tambourine Bay/Burns Bay Road intersection.

Cultural services - A total of $310,000 has been provided for cultural services programs.

Other capital projects pegged to receive funding include: • Kingsford Smith Oval $400,000 for grandstand and amenities upgrades; • Tantallon Oval - $500,000 matching funding for the proposed grandstand upgrade works; • Amenities building upgrades - $50,000 is provided for amenities in Helen Street Reserve; and • Playground upgrades - $150,000 is provided for priority playground equipment upgrades

DRAFT COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN The Draft Community Strategic Plan entitled ‘Liveable Lane Cove, 2035’ has been developed by Council to guide Lane Cove to 2035.

Following engagement workshops with community, councillors and council staff regarding the future of Lane Cove and priorities moving towards 2035, the draft plan has been prepared to show long-term goals and objectives and the strategies to achieve them.

Community feedback highlighted the following priorities: • Protecting our local open space and bushland • Improving public transport services • Managing urban growth and density • Preserving our clean waterways • Ensuring our community feels connected and involved in community life • Enhancing community safety on our streets and in our public spaces • Expanding choices for healthy and active lifestyles within our community The 2018-2019 Draft Budget; Draft Delivery Program (incorporating Operational Plan) 2018-21; and the Draft Community Strategic Plan can be viewed at the Civic Centre and at the Lane Cove Library.

The State Government publicly exhibited its Draft Medium Density Housing Code at the end of 2016. Council expressed concern that it wasn’t beneficial for housing in the Lane Cove LGA because it was likely to result in inappropriate overdevelopment in the area, and that quality medium density development was already being achieved in the LGA’s R3 Medium Density Residential Zone under Council’s controls.

As part of its submission, Council also explained that it did not consider complying development to be an appropriate mechanism for medium density development, especially where it permits density out of character with its context.

Despite these comments, it is clear that medium density is a key policy direction for the State Government and the Greater Sydney Commission.

The FoodFaith community garden in Lane Cove is running a workshop on how to make a self-watering wicking bed. A wicking bed can help us when we can't rely on the rain and in the hot weather which still seems to be with us - even in the Autumn months.

I’d highly recommend it as a way to find out what you want for your life, whether you’re 16 or sixty.

And the next time a friend reminds you of what you can’t do at your age, you may want to respond with what you can.

We can live our lives as we wish, with wisdom and grace, without the need to fulfill the expectations of others. We can be mentors to the young and someone they aspire to be.

Ask your local health professional Our Nation’s Dental Health A recent report by the Australian Health Policy Collaboration has found that only half of all Australians are brushing their teeth twice a day.

This is contributing to a finding that 90% of Australians have some form of tooth decay. The report linked smoking and drinking to poor oral health, and found that almost three quarters of all Australian children eat too much sugar leading to more than one third of five-year-olds having decay in their baby teeth.

What can we make of these findings?

Certainly, good oral care habits are important to help us counteract the lifestyle disease we call tooth decay.

But the ultimate prevention can only be achieved by addressing our diet.

Before humans began farming and processing food around 10,000 years ago, tooth decay was Dental extremely uncommon. It is only recently that sugar - the most dentally destructive dietary component - has come into common use. Although refining sugar was first documented 8,000 years ago, it has regularly appeared in the diet in the last 200 years, with consumption greatly increasing over the last 100 years or so since food manufacturers started adding it to their products.

These days, around 80% of processed food products contain sugar. This is irrespective of whether the food is in fact sweet or savoury. This makes it very difficult to navigate our food choices in order to reduce sugar exposure.

What could we do moving forward?

Many people would point to the difficulty in obtaining

professional dental care as the biggest obstacle in combatting dental diseases.

Dentistry is extremely expensive to fund at a government level due to the high overheads involved.

Prevention is a far better solution than treatment.

Governments should focus on both community education as well as strategic measures to reduce the consumption of processed foods containing sugar. One example would be through taxing sugar. The money raised could then be diverted back into community health education initiatives, as well as the provision of medical treatments for all the various metabolic diseases also caused by sugar consumption, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

A common misconception is that the human spine is weak and as a result, we should avoid heavy or repeated lifting.

In fact, the spine is a robust and flexible structure that can withstand significant load. As with other areas of the body, loading strengthens the back. When we avoid using our backs or spend a lot of time being sedentary, our muscles and discs weaken and as a result we are more likely to injure ourselves.

Ask your local health professional Paget’s disease of Bone This month we look at a fairly uncommon, but troublesome condition called Paget’s disease of Bone. Thank you to Sylvia, one of our TVO readers, for suggesting this as a topic.

In the past, the old darlings of medicine were fond of naming conditions after themselves, leaving no clues as to what the conditions were all about.

These days the process and mechanism usually describes the condition, giving us a clearer idea of what it is, for example, Squamous Cell cancer of the skin, or Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol in the blood).

SO WHO WAS DR PAGET? Sir James Paget was an English surgeon and pathologist of the 19th century. He had an impoverished beginning and a slow ascent through the snooty medical hierarchy of the day, but ended up as a giant of surgery and particularly pathology. He found and named a number of conditions. His life story in Wikipedia is fascinating and extraordinary to say the least. He suffered for his profession and deserved the fame he earned.

Bone looks like a solid lump of marble. Think of that lamb bone at last Sunday’s lunch - hard, solid, unbreakable - well for my teeth anyway. In fact, bone is an active tissue in the body, constantly building up new and breaking down old bony tissue. It has a natural but slow cycle of growth and degradation.

Bones have a large blood supply for their activity. The cells that build up new bone are called osteoblasts, and the ones that break it down to the knacker’s yard are called osteoclasts.

It’s a delicate balance between these two cell lines’ activity, together with the neurohumoral and various regulatory influences upon them.

These latter nerve, hormonal and other influences are complex. In Paget’s disease, these various balances are disrupted.

WHAT HAPPENS TO BONE IN PAGET’S DISEASE? To quote the Mayo Clinic advisory, “Paget’s disease of bone interferes with your body’s normal recycling process in which new bone gradually replaces old bone”.

New bone grown in Paget’s proliferates and overgrows in several body sites, which leads to symptoms in those areas. This new bone is weak, enlarged, blood filled and misshapen. This weakness can lead to bone pain, deformities and fractures.

WHAT MAIN AREAS DOES PAGET’S AFFECT?

Paget’s in the pelvic girdle can cause hip pain from pressure and micro fracturing.

Hip arthritis is an outcome.

If the skull is affected, there may be headaches and deafness as Paget’s affects the bony elements of the middle and inner hearing mechanism.

Spaces close in and nerves can be squeezed as they pass through their bony portals.

In the spine, nerve roots may be compressed causing pain, tingling and numbness in the arms or legs. Paraesthesia is a sure sign of nerves being squeezed.

Paget’s in the leg causes a prime sign of the condition, evidenced by increasing bow leggedness. “Great for riding my horse” quipped one patient. The leg bones become misshapen and enlarged and more fragile. The change of angle and structure may cause

knee and hip pain and arthritis.

Heart failure from the extra load on the heart and a small increase in bone cancer incidence rounds out the picture.

WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE OF PAGET’S DISEASE OF BONE About 1-2% of over 55 year olds may have a degree of Paget’s bone change, although many will have no symptoms.

More common in men, the risk rate increases with age.

Having a family member with it increases your chances, as does having family origins in England, Scotland, central Europe and Greece.

HOW DO YOU CONTROL SYMPTOMS? Control of pain comes down to treating the symptoms, whilst finding and treating the cause to stop that pain. There are plenty of pain killers to choose from using trial and error.

HOW DO YOU TREAT PAGET’S DISEASE? The mainstay of treatment is taking Bisphosphonates, which are also used to treat osteoporosis. A calcium controlling hormone called Calcitonin is another. Surgery is available for selected cases, bearing in mind the fragility of this bone and the increased blood flow through it. Correct diet and exercise for strength, along with instruction on the avoidance of falls, is important.

Childhood beliefs In today’s era of fake news, it’s refreshing to go back over stuff we thought was true when we were kids. By Liz Foster.

There are the usual suspects of course, stuff you find out everyone believed.

My husband’s old chestnut was that the boogie man couldn’t get you if you hid under the bed covers. I had a few favourites. The first was I believed every time I heard a song on the radio, it was because the band was playing it there and then, live in the studio. (Variation on this theme I heard recently was someone who thought that the singers lived inside her father’s stereo - she was always curious to pry open the speakers to find out how they went to the bathroom and so on).

My other one was that you got pregnant by kissing. For years I was dumbfounded when watching actors kissing on screen (‘but Mummy she will have a baby!’) My parents would laugh fondly and tell me they were ‘just acting’.

I also thought that babies were born out of your belly button. Yes, yes I know, but belly buttons had something to do with babies and what was the point of them otherwise?

There were the cruel shaggy dog stories perpetuated by parents for their own cause, like the fact that ice-cream vans only played music when they were out of ice cream. And watermelons grew inside stomachs from the swallowed seeds.

There’s the endearingly cute girl who believed that Life Savers lollies kept you alive. When her great-grandma died she told everyone it was because she’d lost her Life Savers.

My mother told me once of the rooftop grand opening of a new carpark, hosted by the mayor with local press in attendance. After cars started to arrive they realised they’d forgotten to build

a down ramp. So they had to stay up there all day until the car park closed and then retreat down the up ramp. It wasn’t until well into adulthood, when retelling the story for the umpteenth time that I realised my mistake (the total absolute incredulity on my friend’s face was a clue). It had become part of my life’s narrative.

I’d love to start inventing fresh tall tales to pitch to our own offspring. Their information access is better than ours, but on the other hand, their intel is often fake. So in some ways, not much has changed.

Turning the tide

The Lane Cove community is part of a new research study – the first of its kind in Australia – that has been designed to better understand the predictors of loneliness.

The research is hoping to identify the main causes of loneliness and how communities can best address this issue through effective programs.

Dr Michelle Lim is a Senior Lecturer at the Iverson Health Innovation Institute in Melbourne and the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Australian Coalition to End Loneliness. Her main research focus to date has been to develop evidence-based psychological interventions that can reduce loneliness in young people with mental ill health.

“Loneliness is not just a social issue – it’s also a health issue – and the two most vulnerable groups are 15-25 year olds and over 65 year olds.

“Our research so far has shown that one of the biggest predictors for loneliness is a high level of social anxiety.

As people start to increasingly feel disconnected from their peers, it impacts their mental health,” says Dr Lim.

“The risk factors that contribute to loneliness are on the rise, with more people living by themselves or away from their support networks, and increasing divorce rates.

“By conducting a large-scale research study, we hope to identify and better understand predictors and risk factors, together with the trends in loneliness.

With this data, we can better design effective interventions that can be implemented and rolled out within communities.”

The research study will take place over the next two years and researchers are hoping to get over 1000 respondents.

“Anyone can participate – whether you are feeling lonely or not. We’d love Australians from all walks of life to be involved and we’re hoping that it will provide us with a better understanding of how factors such as age, gender, relationship status and socio-economic

status play into this issue, and its associated impacts on physical health, mental health, network health and overall quality of life.”

A forum on this topic is being held in Lane Cove on Tuesday 29th May. Everyone in the community is invited to attend the event to learn more about the science of loneliness and to participate in a discussion forum about how to tackle loneliness.

“Loneliness is something that everyone can feel at some point in their lives. By joining forces with the community, we’re hoping to design public health programs that are effective in stemming loneliness.

Fruitful discussion assists this process,” says Dr Lim. “Considering how common loneliness is and its long-term health impacts, a better understanding of its causes and what we can do to minimise it is an important step.”

I woke up suddenly. The boys' dormitory was in darkness and, as my eyes adjusted to the night, I saw tiny sparkling lights above my bed.

They were fireflies, their fluorescent lit bodies dancing in carefree abandon.

I watched them in delight, hoping my sleeping companions would also wake to see this wonderful sight. I decided to catch some. A number of them finished up in my knotted handkerchief under my mosquito net where they gave out a combined light strong enough to read by. I finally released them, to continue their spectacular routine, remembering this as an unforgettable experience.

The industrial light overhead cast luminous geometric shapes over the surface of my coffee. The ceramic cup was presented atop a miniature South American rug doubling as a coaster.

The accompanying card described it as an ‘Guatemala Bella Elizabeth with tasting notes of cocoa, honey and raspberry’. It was a choice between this and the ‘Guatemala Finca Rosa blend with notes of bubblegum, strawberry and coconut’.

The hipster barista looked worried when I requested warm milk, as if I’d committed a caffeine crime. I wondered when life’s simple pleasures became so complicated... as I stirred and smiled.

I felt the intense pain of immense weight on my arm, I tasted the salty water on my tongue, I saw waves crashing on the rock and I heard the splashing of the waves as I crashed against the hard and ridged rock. Passing with flying colours Last week we had a visit from an auditor who put us through our paces for what is called Third Party Verification. Essentially, this is what is required for us to demonstrate that we are a fit and proper provider of services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme to provide support and services to people with a disability.

Last year we went through a Quality Review which was a similar process, but one conducted by the National Aged Care Quality Agency, and that identified us as being fit and proper to provide services to older people through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. We passed both with flying colours.

Why am I telling you this? Because I think you will be reassured that your local Community Service is fully accredited and has in place systems, policies and procedures to ensure that vulnerable people in our community can get a high quality, reliable and trustworthy service in their own homes from a local provider that has been around for over 50 years. (Both Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services and Lane

Cove North Side Community Services were established over 50 years ago, before merging last July to become Sydney Community Services).

An audit or review is an excellent opportunity for an organisation like ours to step back and look at all the policies and procedures in place to make sure they are up-to-date with current legislation, and that staff, volunteers and clients are fully aware of them. This year we want to set up a rolling program to review policies, and for those involving the community, we want to include local residents in that review and ask them to assess whether we are following our policies and whether they are appropriate for the work we do. Let me know if you would like to be involved.

Have Your Say on Council's Plans Following preliminary community consultation, Council has prepared a Draft Community Strategic Plan, Liveable Lane Cove: 2035.

The plan aims to reflect the community’s vision, aspirations and main priorities as we move towards 2035.

A three-year Delivery Program and Operational Plan, which outlines the actions to be implemented in order to achieve our long term objectives, and a budget that supports these actions have also been prepared.

On Sunday 6th May, Hunters Hill invites locals to come along to the annual Food and Wine Festival, which has been held since 2000. All proceeds go towards supporting local community groups like us, as well as Hunters Hill Ryde Men’s Shed, Hunters Hill SES and the St John’s Ambulance Service in Gladesville. The festival is run by volunteers and attracts huge crowds of people who appreciate fine wines, excellent food and love gourmet produce and treats.

Avoiding dog bites in children When a dog bites a child, the surrounding adults are in shock as often it appeared to be ‘unprovoked’. Usually however, there are behavioural cues from the dog that can be identified well before the actual bite takes place.

All dogs have the capability of biting, even if there are no previous signs of aggression. This form of self-preservation is more common if a dog is placed in a fearful situation. While big dogs may produce a bigger bite, do not underestimate the power of a toy breed’s jaw, especially as smaller dogs can sometimes feel overwhelmed and bite in fear of their own life!

Spending some time learning about how to properly read a dog’s mood can prevent dog bites occurring.

Learn to read ‘doggy body language’ Before and during any dog-child interaction, look for loose, relaxed body movement. I refer to this as a ‘floppy’ dog appearance – as though the whole dog is wagging, not just the tail. This is known as the green zone.

When a dog becomes unsure and uncomfortable in a situation, this is known as the orange zone. It is important to watch out for this body language, as it may be unsafe for a child to interact with them. Signs include: • Licking • Yawning • Barking (can be a sign of anxiety) • Ears positioned back against the head • Stiffened body position (tail may still be wagging) • Whites of the eyes becoming more obvious • Lip lifting • Growling • Snapping The orange zone can quickly progress to the red zone, where the dog is highly aroused, fearful and can no longer think clearly.

Signs include: • Excessive barking • Lunging • Biting • Freezing (with fear) Red flags in puppy behaviour If a puppy is consistently showing orange or red zone signs indicating anxiety, see your vet for a behaviour assessment. It is vital to act quickly, as the sooner the problem is identified, the better the outcome.

Factors that contribute to an increased risk of behavioural abnormalities include: • Puppies hand-reared alone • Puppies with anxious parents (genetic)

The socialisation period for puppies is 3 to 12 weeks of age (sometimes up to 14 weeks), so the ideal time to attend puppy classes is from 8-12 weeks of age. It is too late to wait until your puppy has been fully vaccinated (usually by 16 weeks).

If your dog has behavioural issues, please organise a consultation with your vet rather than googling a solution. There are many outdated techniques online.

Behavioural issues are not always able to be solved through training alone - in fact, attempting to train a dog in an anxious state can be futile and may even make the situation worse. See your vet to determine whether your dog has a clinical behavioural problem (which needs veterinary help), or a behaviour which can be addressed by a trainer.

Trainers who have completed Delta Society modules and workshops and use positive training methods are my first preference.

Improving safety around dogs • Never allow children to be near a dog that is eating - putting a child between them and their food is a recipe for disaster.

• Hugging is not understood by dogs. It is heavily encroaching into their personal space and children need to learn to respect this, approaching them in a non-threatening and quiet manner, rather than with an unpredictable and overbearing greeting.

• Always ask the dog’s owner if your child is allowed to pat their dog.

• Never play with a dog without their owner watching and never enter a dog’s yard without their owner present.

• Be careful not to surprise a sleeping dog.

• Don’t allow children to play with a litter of puppies near the mother, especially if she is still feeding them as she may be very protective.

• Ensure your children interact quietly and carefully with dogs and don’t get too overexcited or noisy.

• Respect a dog’s decision to move away. Do not chase them.

The rhythm of life My memories of a cherry blossom spring in Japan have receded as I cruise slowly down the Mississippi. I have always wanted to do this trip, my desire initiated by Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Almost 40 years ago I lived in Japan and the previous occupants of the apartment I moved into had left behind that book - the only book - and I was thirsty for anything to read in English...

As is often the way on our group tours, a few of our golf clients suggested they too would like to cruise the Missisippi and play golf along the way. So several months of research later, I find myself here with a group of 32 enthusiasts, not all of them golfers, but all equally eager to learn more and experience life on the third biggest river system in the world.

Our vessel is the most modern on the river. However in the quest for authenticity, the decor mimics what you might expect in the South – gracious flounces frame the windows, the dining room (with tables for four, six and eight) is chandelier lit and elegant in typical antebellum style. Think Gone With the Wind, except for the plumbing, and bedrooms which are modern, very well-designed and relatively spacious. And that fire engine red paddlewheel out back? Well it certainly looks pretty kicking up gentle splashes but does nothing to propel the riverboat!

Despite my apprehension that meals would offer little departure from deepfried food, my tastebuds and waistline are pleasantly surprised to be enjoying fresh salads, and main courses that include baked, grilled and braised meats and fish with a variety of sauces. It seems irreligious to ignore the wonderful Cajun alternatives.... delish. Pluck an apple or banana from one of the many bowls around the boat, or be seduced by just-baked cookies. You can eat well or badly as is your want.

Not that the food department is without its problems. We Australian coffee snobs have had to compromise with a coffee pod machine, the only alternative to drip filter ‘American coffee’. However we drew the line at drinking Yellow Tail, and given our group comprised 20% of the riverboat’s complement, the quality of the included wines has been upgraded!

So what about the onboard experience? Well, so far we’ve been pleasantly surprised. The staff, all American of course

and novel for those of us who cruise a lot, cannot do enough to look after the guests. They are friendly, helpful and sincerely hospitable. Gratuities are not expected (they are included in the cruise fare) and this makes it easy for everyone, particularly the Australian contingent.

On our first night we enjoyed a fabulous concert

by Dan & Eddie, a duet who play banjos and double base (and at one point during the show, a saw). They are true entertainers – great voices; musically very talented, funny and engaging; and versatile. Finding out that there were 34 Aussies onboard, they ended their show with a very rousing version of Waltzing Matilda which might sound corny to you, my reader, but was a lot of fun for everyone. There is music each night, and all of it is excellent.

This being the deep south where people are very religious, the Cruise Directors (a recorded opera singer and his pianist wife) led a Sunday hymn service attended by nearly half of the guests, myself included. The sky didn’t fall in, the singing was enthusiastic, and it was most pleasant and quite appropriate to be gliding down the river doing as the southerners would do on a Sunday morning.

Prior to each offshore excursion to the historic cities of Vicksburg, Natchez, St Francis and Baton Rouge

enroute to New Orleans there are onboard lectures that detail the battles, the politics, the geography and more to make us all the more knowledgeable about what we are exploring. The lectures and the guides are bringing the river to life for us.

It is altogether a wonderful cruise. And if you are looking for something very different to the European river cruises that dominate our travel media, I can heartily endorse a Mississippi cruise. On the right boat of course, as not all cruises are created equal.

Bookended by Memphis and New Orleans it will be one of your most memorable trips for sure. I’d be happy to facilitate this for you.

Autumn bliss

There’s nothing quite like walking into a warm home with aromas of baked puddings and a roast dinner. With more time spent inside, the change of season provides the perfect excuse to try new recipes. BY BERNADETTE KENNEALY. Cooking is great for so many reasons, whether it be therapy; to crack open that great red wine; or to grab a bunch of friends on a weekend afternoon for nourishment, a laugh and a bowl of comfort.

Walking past the butcher’s daily offerings, are there meat cuts you wish you knew how to use? Perhaps skirt steak, pork cheeks or chicken Maryland? Pork cheeks are one of my favourites and my ears prick up every time I hear of a new recipe.

The version below would be delicious with rice noodles and broth and is best made the morning of, or even the day before.

Mandarin and Ginger Pork Cheeks • Oil for frying • 3 onions, finely chopped • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped • 2 carrots, roughly chopped.

• 6 pork cheeks - approx 1 kilo (or substitute with beef cheeks) • 2 inches ginger, peel and slice

Chicken Maryland with Bacon and Polenta • Spice rub • 1 tblspn sea salt • 1 tblspn smoked paprika • 1 tblspn ground cumin • 4 springs fresh thyme leaves • 1 tspn dry mustard powder • 1 tspn ground white pepper

• 1/2 cup light soy sauce • 500mls chicken stock • 1/4 cup Shaoxing wine • 3 pieces dried mandarin peel (Asian grocer)

Any meat cooked on the bone has more flavour. Although it does take longer to cook, the flavour intensity is worth it!

This recipe is based on feeding 6 people. Work on one Maryland per person, skin on.

• 2 whole star anise • 2 dried red chillies (or to taste) • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1 tspn white peppercorns • 2 tblspn dark soy sauce • 2 tblspn brown sugar • 6 mandarins, whole

Sauté onions in a heavy based pot with oil for 4-5 minutes until translucent. Add the trimmed pork cheeks and brown on each side. Add the ginger, carrot and aromatic spices and cook stirring for another 3 minutes until the whole pot is fragrant. Add the stock and Shaoxing wine, transfer into an oven dish, cover and slow cook on 140 degrees for 2 hours.

Add the whole mandarins, the dark soy and brown sugar, cover, continue to cook for another 30 minutes (a slow cooker will also work here). To serve, spoon out pork cheeks with a mandarin per serve. Great with steamed rice and broccolini, bok choy or even steamed white cabbage.

Mix all spice ingredients together in a bowl. Slash the chicken legs, place a couple of slashes on the thigh and then rub the spices into all the nooks and crannies. Place onto a tray in a single layer and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

Add a couple of wedge cut Spanish onions, 4 smashed whole garlic cloves, 1 punnet of cherry tomatoes (whole), and one orange cut into quarters. Drizzle with olive oil and place into a medium hot oven (160 degrees).

Roast for 30 to 40 minutes.

As that is roasting, sauté a couple of chopped bacon rashers in a heavy based pot. Add 2 cups of polenta and 1 litre of chicken stock, working quickly until a soft porridge consistency. Turn the heat off and cover. Leave for 5 minutes to absorb and soften, add 100gms butter, freshly chopped parsley and 100gms cheddar cheese.

To serve, place one Maryland per guest on top of a spoonful of the soft cheesy polenta. Add a splodge of the now saucy onions, tomatoes and garlic. Perfect with a crisp green salad.

Skirt Steak Grill your steak on medium high heat till nicely charred, then rest in a warm place for about 10 minutes. Slice and serve with the remaining fresh chimichurri spooned over. Perfect with roasted spuds, sour cream and a fresh tomato salad.

CHIMICHURRI SAUCE • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar • Juice of one fresh lime • 1 tspn sea salt, plus more • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced or crushed • 1 shallot, finely chopped • 1 green jalapeño, finely chopped • 1 bunch chopped fresh coriander Although it might give the impression you can just throw it on the BBQ and then slide it next to the potato salad, skirt steak does need a little more love than this.

I find it works incredibly well with Chimichurri, the Argentinian green sauce with a kick. After you make the sauce, divide it in half. Use one half to marinate the steak for at least a couple of hours, or overnight.

• 1 bunch chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 2 tblspn finely chopped fresh oregano • 200ml extra-virgin olive oil

Mix together in a bowl.

Can be used straight away, or keeps in the fridge for 2 days.

A key responsibility for government is to provide more infrastructure as the population grows. Lane Cove Council has provided parks, childcare centres and community centres alongside our new high-density developments. But being able to provide land for new sportsgrounds is more difficult. Councils in the northern Sydney region recently commissioned a study which for the first time quantified the supply and capacity of our sportsgrounds. Demand will far outweigh supply in coming years.

Council’s first steps will be to convert some existing ovals to synthetic surfaces. This has already been done very successfully at Blackman Park. We can schedule more training sessions and matches compared to grass with the surface quality maintained all year. We can also cater for more hours of use per day by installing or upgrading lighting at our ovals. In addition, we will work with local schools to upgrade their ovals and open these up to community use (as has been done at Chatswood High). Beyond these measures, we will need to work with the State Government to fund land acquisition for new sportsfields.

Enabling local sports participation is an important part of what Council can do to encourage everyone in the community to live a healthy lifestyle.

Out & about in Lane Cove Improved Bike Lanes

Citizen Science

Council has been working to improve the bike lane network in Lane Cove.

Technology is now making it easier than ever to be a ‘Citizen Scientist’.

You can help to collect data and monitor important aspects of your local environment from the comfort of your own balcony, backyard, street or bushland. From frogs, birds, plants and reptiles there is a project waiting for your involvement. Go to Australian Citizen Science Association website and click on Find a Project: www. citizenscience.org.au.

Council is involved in a number of programs and has recently installed nesting boxes for Powerful Owls to observe behaviour and record data.

Earlier in the year the section of bike lane along Longueville Road from River Road to Richardson Street West was resurfaced with new line markings in place. The next stage later this year will see the section up to Lane Cove Public School upgraded.

Cyclists using the Pacific Highway to connect to the Epping/Longueville Road bike path will have recently discovered that the access is much smoother thanks to the extension of the final segment of the bike lane.

Retirement of General Manager Barry Smith

Anzac Day Care Packages

At Council’s April meeting, General Manager Barry Smith advised of his intention not to renew his contract in September this year.

Barry will continue as General Manager until his retirement in September, while an executive search is conducted for the position. Barry has demonstrated leadership and energy during his time at Hunters Hill and he hands over a strong team and organisation. His legacy is one which Council can build on for the future.

Those of us who know Barry personally admire him not only for his business efforts, but also for his personal lifetime values as a devoted husband, father and soon-to-be grandfather. We wish Barry well for the future.

It has been more than a century since Australians at Gallipoli Cove showed the world those qualities of mateship, of toughness, and of cheerfulness under pressure, all of which are such a part of our national character.

This year an Australia Post initiative has given free postage for individual care packages to our Defence Force personnel serving overseas. I invited residents and community groups to join me in being part of this, and collected a mountain of food and toiletries to send.

Tim Tams turned out to be a favourite donation, but everyone who donated showed imagination and thoughtfulness. I am sure these gift packages will help bring a little bit of Australia to every country in which the Defence Forces serve. Thanks to Lane Cove Girl Guides, North Shore Police Command, Mercy College Chatswood, Hunters Hill RSL Sub-Branch, and North Shore Rotary for their generosity, and their support for our men and women overseas.

Bedlam Bay habitat planting Families and friends came along to help with the next stage in restoring small bird habitat in Bedlam Bay, an important link in a habitat corridor along the lower Parramatta River.

Small native birds need suitable resting places between bushland areas in order to move around safely. You can help them survive by planting native shrubs and groundcovers that will become their protective habitat havens. If you’d like to be involved, please contact Council on 9879 9400.

Seniors Month events I recently attended an event organised by Council to celebrate the 2018 Seniors Festival.

Called ‘Your Brain Matters’, the event included very interesting speakers, Prof Henry Brodaty from the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing and The Hon John Watkins, former CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia. We are fortunate in Hunters Hill to have so many local organisations promoting interesting leisure activities to help keep us fit and healthy as we grow older.

New look for Community Transport Our local community transport provider has been renamed.

The organisation is now called Stryder, and all their buses and cars will now be decorated with their new bright blue logo.

The name was launched by His Excellency The Hon. David Hurley, retired Governor of NSW. Stryder provides a great service to our older residents, offering door-to-door transport to medical appointments, social outings and shopping.

Bedlam Bay lights It was a pleasure to officially open the new training lights at the Bedlam Bay sports field, which is part of the Bedlam Bay Regional Park.

This area originally formed part of the southern section of the Gladesville Hospital. It is now a home for women’s soccer, a rapidly growing sport and it is pleasing to see the increased usage now possible on this beautiful field.

The official opening was attended by local State member, The Hon. Anthony Roberts; Gladesville Ravens Soccer officials; Councillors and Council staff. The project was funded by Council together with both State and Federal governments.

Commemorating Anzac Day While these care packages went to our men and women overseas, Australians all over the country, as well as in France and Gallipoli Cove, commemorated the dedication of everyone who has served in the Australian Defence Forces - past and present.

We commemorated together particularly those who gave their lives for future generations. In the midst of some heightened international tension, their sacrifice is a particularly poignant reminder of the importance to all of us of our freedom, values, and way of life.

As well as the North Sydney commemorations, I personally attended the Hunters Hill Council Anzac Eve commemoration service on Monday 23rd, and the Lane Cove RSL commemoration service on the day. This is such an important part of our national calendar. I want to thank everybody who contributed to the commemoration services, together with everyone who commemorated the day, either at the services overseas or here in Australia itself.

Lane Cove Gardens Retirement Village Morning Tea Shortly after Anzac Day I was invited by residents of Lane Cove Gardens Retirement Village to come and join them for a cup of tea. Our senior residents have given so much to the community throughout their lives. It’s a privilege to be able to sit down with them and hear some of the stories they have to tell. I also value the advice that frequently comes with it!

I am afraid I did not get around to baking my own Anzac Day biscuits to take with me, but I was grateful for the tea the residents gave me, and the sweet treats they kindly provided. My thanks for the hospitality extended to me by all the residents, but particularly Pat Jones and Bob Lawrence, who helped to organise the morning tea.

HOME SECURITY I COMMUNITY

Protecting your castle A person’s home is their castle. Unfortunately, we must work hard to keep not only our castle, but our families, safe and secure.

The first step when considering home security is to look at where you are located. Get outside and have a walk around. Go out onto the kerb and see what is visible from the sides of the house.

When lights are on at night, can someone see everything in your living room?

Next ensure that all your doors are adequately secured to prevent easy access. Particularly consider any entrances that are covered from view such as external garage doors or utility room exits. Modern sliding patio doors normally come fitted with anti-lift locks, but many older types do not have them.

Fitting a security film on glass doors and installing a light and durable security screen on the front and rear doors can also assist.

Ensure that screen door and security window grilles comply with the Australian Standards. Security doors should also withstand the Australian Standards for impact resistance testing, which is to endure an impact of 100 joules of energy.

All the windows in the house should have a locking mechanism. Use these during the day, especially when you are home.

The best method to connect all these together is to use an example of an onion and its layers.

Lane Cove Plaza and the Lloyd Rees Bandstand Alison Rose, architect and former resident of Lane Cove and an architect, is the author of ‘Pavilions in Parks’, a book which discusses Australian bandstands and rotundas. Here Alison provides some history behind the Lloyd Rees bandstand in the Lane Cove Plaza.

People have asked me why I decided to write a book on this topic. My reply is that bandstands and rotundas are attractive small buildings in an amazing variety of styles that enhance our visual environment. At the same time, they reflect the social history of their location. Why were they built? What is their local significance?

When I moved to live in Lane Cove in 1969, the junction of Longueville Road and Burns Bay Road was a hazardous place. You had to dodge tankers and trucks to get to the other side of the road. The local Chamber of Commerce was obviously aware of the problem, as they wrote a letter and report to Lane Cove Council on 3rd February 1969 outlining various options for dealing with the problem, including the closure of the last block of Burns Bay Road combined with the routing of traffic onto Rosenthal Avenue and building a three-storey carpark!

Council met members of the Chamber of Commerce at the end of February to discuss the options and as a result, a special committee on Lane Cove development was formed. By July, the committee was approaching consultants for ideas on improvements to the shopping centre - including outdoor restaurants.

For Lane Cove Council to take this initiative in 1969 was almost revolutionary and it is to the credit of the members of the Chamber of Commerce and Lane Cove Council that the first pedestrian plaza in NSW came into being.

Progress towards this result was not without a protracted battle. In February 1974, well known landscape architect Harry Howard was asked to prepare a plan for the plaza. In September 1974, police permission was given to close the block between Longueville Road and Rosenthal Avenue for a 90-day trial.

A flurry of objections and court cases ensued. Typical was the owner of the

fish and chips shop, who complained that he would lose customers as no-one would be able park outside his shop.

Surveys, however, showed that most citizens of Lane Cove were enthusiastic about the idea. Eventually, Council prevailed and voted for permanent closure on 10th March 1975. The plaza was officially opened in November 1977.

In 1980 Lloyd Rees, the acclaimed artist and resident of Lane Cove, wrote to Council suggesting the plaza needed “a visual focus ... such as a bandstand with a touch of phantasy about it but which would be useful for summer shade and for public addresses and music etc.” He donated the substantial sum of $5000 towards the cost of a bandstand.

Lloyd Rees was always interested in landscape and civic design. He taught

art history and drawing at Sydney University from 1946 to 1986. His pupils included Harry Howard. Lloyd Rees moved to Hobart in 1986 with his son and died there on 2nd December 1988.

The bandstand, designed by Harry Howard, is an elegant and simple structure of slim metal columns with a stretched membrane canopy which forms a sculptural focus at the western end of the plaza.

The plaza and its bandstand has been an outstanding success. It has formed a focus for the community there is always something happening on the weekends and often music being played in the bandstand, fulfilling Lloyd Rees’ wish for “a touch of phantasy, summer shade, public addresses and music”.

Pavilions in Parks, published by Halstead Press, is available from Dymocks bookstores. Alison’s interest in heritage architecture led to her research of this topic, with bandstands and rotundas often showcasing the history and character of big cities and tiny townships. Her book guides readers and travellers across the country where these structures adorn the land.

Pigment Lab - a relative newcomer to the art supply scene - gave a product demonstration at the March annual general meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society.

Edward and Annie Gee were enthusiastic to explain the ‘point of difference’ offered at their Newtown store. Opened for nineteen months, they showed the audience some of the quality art products they source at very competitive prices.

As Edward mixed paint and talked, it was obvious that today’s artist is fortunate to have an instant product for their creative process. He maintained that his objective in opening this business was to secure reasonably priced products from foreign markets such as Spain, Italy, England and the US whilst not compromising on quality. Acrylics, watercolours and oil paints are all stocked with brands such as Da Vinci, Vallejo and Wallace Seymour.

Using Da Vinci acrylic paints, Edward demonstrated that a vibrancy was retained if an artist mixed single pigment paints together to make a colour, rather than mixing together paints made up from several pigments, which would produce a muddy colour. Da Vinci colour charts were passed around, illustrating the richness of the products he was using.

Pigment Lab also make their own canvases. Whilst pine stretcher boards are used, their design ensures that a tight canvas surface results.

If humidity is a problem, why not use a polyester canvas?

Some beautiful samples of canvas were presented. The canvas sourced from Italy was especially popular with the audience.

If you are sensitive to turps, then a product is now available for oil painters that makes oil paint water soluble, providing a healthier environment for these artists.

Pigment Lab also stocks paper. The main brands available are Saunders Waterford and Magnani.

Magnani is from a paper mill in Pescia (near Florence in Italy) that dates back to 1404 and provides 100% cotton handmade papers suitable for watercolour and printmaking.

What the evening achieved was the realisation that information about new products can not only create new marks, but it can also lead to a healthier environment for the artist.

The aim of the Lane Cove Art Society is to encourage, recognise and reward artistic talent in the community. We warmly welcome new members – the sole requirement is an interest in art.

The Lane Cove Art Society also holds two exhibitions yearly as well as workshops, visits to galleries or artists’ studios, and mini-exhibitions for members.

The Lane Cove Art Society meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except Jan/Dec) at the Living & Leisure Centre, 180 Longueville Rd Lane Cove (almost opposite the Lane Cove Library).

The meetings start at 7:30pm with time to meet and talk prior to the demonstration.

At each meeting there is a demonstration or talk by a leading artist or guest speaker and anyone interested in art is welcome to attend.

The May meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society will feature a demonstration by Yaeli Ohana. Yaeli’s acrylic paintings are about the atmosphere of place. She tries to capture what lies beneath the surface of the seen world, by exploring external and inner worlds. A professional artist for over 20 years, Yaeli has exhibited in commercial galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and New York.

GALLERY LANE COVE AND CENTREHOUSE ARTS CENTRE ENTER AN EXCITING NEW PHASE

Centrehouse will be co-located with Gallery Lane Cove as of late June. The two entities are now collectively known as Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios.

From July, Centrehouse’s classes will be housed in the new Creative Studios on both levels below the Gallery. Building refurbishment and retro-fitting will provide facilities for ceramics, printmaking, painting, drawing, textiles and sewing. The organisation acknowledges Lane Cove Council's generous financial assistance in enabling this relocation process.

Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios will offer new and existing courses across many art forms for various age groups. As part of this expansion, the Gallery is in the process of recruiting contract teachers for printmaking, painting, sewing and knitting. Inspired by the many and diverse notions of the soul, this print based, mixed media exhibition will feature the work of Bernhardine Mueller, Karen Ball, Denise ScholzWulfing and Elizabeth Pozega.

Each of these artists has interpreted the theme from very different, non-traditional viewpoints. For Bernhardine, the river is the soul of the bush and the landscape, with all its shapes and forms such as fauna and flora. For Karen, the soul is a place where people dwell - the notion of the home and house are central to her work. In Denise’s work, the soul is housed in the tree of life and the birds are messengers ascending to the heavens.

Elizabeth’s imagery relates to her soul ‘place’ where the mind can be at peace: the natural environment. All four artists are members of the Sydney Printmakers, a prominent and active organization of artists who practice printmaking.

Afghanistan 1970 – A Photographic Journey

WHEN: 2nd – 26th May OPENING NIGHT: 6-8pm, Wednesday 2nd May Experience 1970 Afghanistan through the photographic lenses of artist Brian Dawson. As much a story about the artist’s personal journey through the region as it is about the history of the place, the exhibition weaves together a photographic tapestry of the country’s culture from a past era, depicting images of many sites which no longer exist, including the iconic, monumental statue of the Buddha of Bamiyan destroyed by the Taliban, and the Kuchi tribespeople who have all but disappeared.

The works form a pictorial record of travels through that memorable country. This was part of a year-long overland trip from London to India with Brian’s travel companion, Raye Farr, in a VW Kombi, bought for the princely sum of 50 pounds. This exhibition of visual, social and historial relevance should not to be missed.

When Marlow mistakes Kate’s house for an inn and treats her father like an inn-keeper, things don’t go so well for him. With her brother causing mischief, her father insulted and her mother plotting a marriage that nobody wants, it’s no wonder Kate has to stoop to conquer!

SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER belongs to that small group of classic English comedies which not only never go out of fashion, but also never fail to delight.

Directed by Peter Farmer (Away, The 39 Steps, Shadowlands, Charley’s Aunt), this production is a true delight: a sweet concoction of Goldsmith’s sly language and lovable characters.

It’s also a rarity: a comedy that – like Shakespeare’s – has withstood the test of time!

Music tuition at LCMCC

Based on the success of their 2012 camp, the LCYO will replicate the experience in May as they stay overnight on the James Craig, participate in music workshops and then stage a public concert.

The Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre (LCMCC) provides children and adult learners with access to high quality music tuition services, with a culturally diverse range of experienced teachers that use the Suzuki and traditional methods of teaching.

Tuition is available for Piano (Traditional and Suzuki); Guitar (Traditional and Suzuki); Violin (Suzuki); Cello (Traditional and Suzuki); Clarinet (Traditional); Flute (Traditional); Saxophone (Traditional); Oboe (Traditional); Recorder (Traditional); Voice (Traditional); Musicianship; and Composition. Accompaniment services, early childhood and group musicianship classes are also available.

Music meets Maritime Heritage Follow the Lane Cove river into the harbour and over to Wharf 7 at Pyrmont and behold a rare combination in late May as the magnificently restored barque, the James Craig (1874), is joined by the sonorous musical crew, the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra.

Instead of climbing the topgallants, these fine young performers will be reaching their own musical heights during their annual overnight camp and intensive music workshop. They will rehearse on board the James Craig, sleep in hammocks and roll out a public concert.

But beware! The orchestra will be kidnapped by pirates demanding a ransom!

So, come along to the RESCUE CONCERT for our musical voyagers and enjoy Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, 1st movement, plus rollicking sea-shanties and swashbuckling pirate tunes. A highlight will be the world premiere of Viking Saga for horn and orchestra by the multi-talented Adrian Hallam who will also perform the horn solo.

FAMILY LAW

Saving the ‘golden goose’ When it comes to property settlements after the breakdown of a marriage or de facto relationship, most separating couples want a clean break. They may need to have a continuing relationship of some sort if there are children and support payments for living expenses. But other than that, they wish to be as financially independent as possible and go their own way.

This is understandable. And this is how the Family Law courts see it too. In line with section 81 of the Family Law Act, judges have an obligation to end the existing financial relations of the parties.

So joint assets may be sold, or one party is given a chance to buy out the other’s interests.

However sometimes this arrangement is neither sensible or practical. The parties’ wealth and financial future may lie in a particular business, home or farm, which may have been the ‘golden goose’ and produced the family fortune and lifestyle.

To get rid of it can be very counterproductive for both parties.

I recall a recent case where the parties were running a successful interior design business and each earning a high income.

They both excelled in their own sphere of control of the business. Neither could run the business alone. Their business relationship was strong. However their personal relationship had broken down.

They both wanted to preserve their business for the benefit of themselves and their children. With the assistance of their lawyers, they were able to come to sensible arrangements to continue as business partners, whilst ceasing their intimate personal relationship. It was a difficult transition, but they managed it amicably.

In another case the parties had a successful self-managed superannuation fund. They had carefully planned a transition to retirement for both of them.

The point is that great results can sometimes be achieved by cooperation, looking for mutual advantage and seeking a win-win situation. This is most likely to happen where the parties are willing to engage in collaborative resolution or family dispute resolution with the help of lawyers and financial experts trained and experienced in these approaches.

Unfortunately many separating couples instead look to maximise their own financial advantage by getting in first and taking an aggressive and litigious approach. This can be great for lawyers, but rarely leads to successful results for the parties themselves and their children.

The ‘treasure’ we inherit is a mixture that requires sorting. This was recently highlighted when working through a marriage preparation course. Into our new relationships we bring gifts and baggage from our past. Being aware of our unique heritage and the ways it affects us, helps us decide what to do with it. Will we treasure those ways in their original form, adjust them for a better fit, or decide to leave them behind? The new relationship brings those practices into sharp focus. What was taken for granted as ‘normal’, may require change to build a new and hopeful future.

My role as Lane Cove Community Chaplain also requires this sifting, but from a Church perspective. Which traditions are a precious gift from the past, deserving preservation? Which need adjustment for a contemporary setting? Are some best discarded altogether? While having a considerable focus on adjustment, guarding the essentials of the Christian faith is also critical. Jesus response to, ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ is informative: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
