EDITOR'S NOTE It’s awards time in Lane Cove!

The Citizenship Awards held earlier this week recognised 24 recipients, 18 who volunteer in various capacities within the community.

With National Volunteer Week taking place from 8th – 14th May, it’s an ideal time to explore the many volunteering opportunities that can complement your particular interests.

Lane Cove’s very deserving Citizen of the Year, Christine Butters, has made a significant contribution over the past 50 years to a wide variety of organisations including St Andrew’s Uniting Church, Lane Cove Music Club, Meals on Wheels, Cove Craft, Longueville Tennis Club amongst others. Congratulations to Christine on receiving this award.

Last month’s article ‘The case of the icon misnomer’, which discussed whether the iconic status of Lloyd Rees Bandstand is justified, elicited strong opinion. TVO received several emails defending the LRB. Turn to page 26 to read these comments.

Over the last 15 years, Kerri Parkinson has been taking aqua aerobics classes at the local pool. Her retirement at the end of this month generated further emails to TVO as students expressed their sadness at her departure. On page 22, we interview Kerri to find out what has made her such a special part of our community.

We continue to be inundated with entries for our 100-word competition. It is wonderful to read these creative short stories each month, with a further selection appearing on page 16. Enjoy!

Giving up their own time, year after year, Council’s Citizenship Awards recognise and thank community members for the contribution that they make, often in an unpaid capacity.

This year’s Citizenship Awards were held in the lead up to National Volunteering Week, an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our volunteers. There were 24 recipients across 11 categories who were presented with an award at the event held on May 2nd.

“For me, volunteering is a natural part of being involved with the local community and learning more about one’s own interests and hobbies. It is also a means of maintaining what others thought important enough to begin in the first place…it is what makes a neighbourhood a community”.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Christine Butters Lane Cove’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, Christine Butters, is a very deserving winner and has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the community life of Lane Cove.

With a long affiliation with St Andrew’s Uniting Church at Longueville, Christine taught Sunday School there at various stages from the 1960’s through to 2003. She has been the Secretary of the congregation since 1990; has been an Elder of the Church and Church Council member since 2006; and is currently the Church Council Secretary.

She is also one of four Church leaders involved in organising twiceweekly activities for older residents called Time4U, which includes monthly pizza and film nights.

Christine has been involved with Lane Cove Music Club since 1984, when she joined the Committee as Treasurer.

In 2001 she became President, a position she still holds 16 years later.

Also in 2001, Christine and her siblings established the Alf and Pearl Pollard Awards in memory of their parents. This Award is for Performance Excellence for Young Musicians aged 11 – 15 years. Christine is currently Deputy President of the Federated Music Clubs of Australia following four years as President from 2012 – 2016.

In addition to a variety of other roles on pre-school committees, school committees, Meals on Wheels and as Director of Cove Craft from 1980 – 1990, Christine has been an active member of the Longueville Tennis Club since 1960, a Committee Member since 1991 and is currently Junior Vice President.

Bill Wallace

Bill Wallace has been Lane Cove’s Town Crier for 17 years. Travelling from the Central Coast for each visit, Bill is always willing to lend his voice and charm to our many official events.

Spotted Orchid

Spotted Orchid started in Lane Cove just over two years ago. The owner, Rita, is passionate about her floral designs and takes a great interest in individual customers. Her care and attention to detail makes her clients come back time and again and Rita’s love for a chat helps her discover extra details about the purpose and sentiment of customer orders.

HONORARY MUSIC, ART AND CULTURE AWARD

Margaret Vickers

Margaret volunteers with Lane Cove Art Society, helping out in a number of capacities from catering, to promotion, to event set-up. In 2016, she stepped down as the Art Society’s Secretary after more than six years. In the lead-up to its milestone 50th anniversary year, Margaret researched the Art Society’s founding fathers.

An artist herself, Margaret is a great believer in fostering younger artists, and teaches printmaking classes.

Cecilia Egan

Cecilia has been solely responsible for the yarn bombing of Lane Cove. Dedicating large amounts of both time and money to this project, Cee uses her craft to spread positive messages. It is such projects that help embed arts and culture as a vital element of our active and vibrant community.

Professor Adrian Lee

Adrian is the President of the LaVoce Community Choir and has helped take it from a casual singing group to a successful community choir. Adrian assembes the choir’s repertoire, recruits new members, manages the finances, stages choir performances, maintains the website and organises publicity.

Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group

Graeme has recently been re-elected as Vice President of the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch.

A retired Lieutenant-Colonel, Graeme is a valuable member of the Lane Cove ANZAC Centenary committee and his knowledge and experience has been put to great use in researching, preparing and delivering ongoing public talks at Lane Cove Library.

Peter has been a hard working and wellrespected President of Osborne Park Progress Association since 1993 and a significant force in the renovation of the Osborne Park Tennis Court. Peter was a long-standing Treasurer of Lane Cove Public School P&C; and auditor of Lane Cove Girl Guides and Tambourine Bay Scouts.

Established in 2009, this group is made up of a small active group of local volunteers who are the driving force behind a range of sustainability activities within the community such as the Bag Share Scheme; an electronic waste campaign and the Responsible Cafés program.

Rosemary Lees

In the past decade, Rosemary has been a dedicated volunteer with Lane Cove & North Side Community Services’ Meals on Wheels team. Rosemary also drives local residents who are otherwise homebound. Prior to this, Rosemary was a coordinator for University of the Third Age, which is dedicated to lifelong learning through the sharing of knowledge.

Bruce Plummer

Bruce has been an active member of the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch since 1999. For many years, Bruce judged the RSL NSW ‘Australia My Country’ schools essay competition and he has been actively involved in the delivery of our ANZAC and Remembrance Day services.

Linen Service volunteers

These volunteers assist frail older people, people with disabilities and their carers to continue living in their own homes by providing them with a fortnightly bed making and linen laundry service. They do their work with joy and bring a smile to isolated residents of Lane Cove.

Beryl Blok

A stalwart member of the Lane Cove Uniting Church, Beryl has lived out her values with a persistent concern for others. A surrogate grandmother to the young families who attend the multi-cultural playgroup at the Meeting House, Beryl has also supported the Walk Around the World program since its inception and the One Million Stars to End Violence project.

Bill McLaughlin

Bill has been a Lane Cove resident for over 40 years and during this time, has been actively involved with the Greenwich Flying Squadron Sailing Club, Northwood Action Group and Lane Cove Historical Society. As a former President of the Historical Society, Bill renewed interest in the original charter of Carisbrook Historic House.

John’s community service in Lane Cove has spanned around 50 years. A long-serving and highly regarded Rotarian, John was an original organiser of Lane Cove’s Red Shield Appeal. He was also involved in the formation of the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra; helped establish Neighbourhood Watch and until recently, was the Treasurer of the Board of Pottery Gardens Retirement Units.

Anita Ho-Baillie

Anita is a senior research fellow at the University of New South Wales where she leads a team of 15 post-doctorate and post-graduate students researching the development of low cost, ultra thin solar cell technology. Anita’s leadership in the field of sustainable development has seen her achieve a world record in energy conversion efficiency for a solar cell that uses a new class of material called perovskite.

Alasdair Stuart and Wendy Bishop

In January 2016, Alasdair Stuart and Wendy Bishop initiated the Repair Café in Lane Cove, a fantastic sustainability initiative that involves local residents upcycling and recycling broken goods in the hope of minimising waste in a throw-away society.

Why volunteer?

An action that enhances the lives of so many Australians, research shows that volunteering positively impacts not only the recipients, but the volunteers themselves.

According to Volunteering Australia, a strong correlation exists between the wellbeing, happiness, health and longevity of people who are emotionally kind and compassionate in their charitable helping activities. Sustained volunteering is also associated with better mental health.

FoodFaith

Established in March 2015 by founder Judy Friedlander, FoodFaith aims to build bridges across different faith, cultural and community groups through shared learnings and practices of food and sustainability.

FoodFaith organises events to bring the Lane Cove community together and its beautiful community garden at Hughes Park is utilised by many local residents.

SPORT Ruth Darling Ruth is a dedicated and hard-working member of Lane Cove Swim Club. She has held many official positions over the past eight years including Club Secretary, Saturday Morning Club Race Secretary and Chief Recorder. Her attention to detail ensures that the Club’s events run smoothly.

SPORT Kenneth Snell Kenneth is an Australian representative and champion in the ancient Korean martial art of Taekkyon. Amongst Kenneth’s achievements is his recent claim to a silver medal and two bronze medals in the World Taekkyon Championships in South Korea.

Glennie volunteers to count money for the local Red Shield Appeal and is a stalwart of customer service at Westpac Lane Cove branch.

Dr Carl Wong

A general practitioner at Lane Cove’s Emerald Medical Practice, Dr Wong goes above and beyond with regular house calls and visits to residential aged care facilities. Dr Wong assists patients with complex health issues that are difficult to manage and supports many vulnerable and disadvantaged residents in Lane Cove.

The wait continues Council’s hearing against forced mergers concluded in April and submissions for the case are ongoing.

At the time of going to print, Council was still awaiting the outcome of the Court’s determination and was not aware of a specific date that this would be provided.

Levy to be introduced for Fire and Emergency Services The way that emergency and fire services are funded in NSW is changing.

From 1st July 2017, the existing insurance-based funding system will be replaced by a levy to be paid by property owners, collected alongside Council rates. Previously only those who held insurance would pay a levy, however it will now be compulsory for all home owners.

The State Government has decided to collect the funds via the Council rates system and as such, the levy will appear on the next Council rate notice in July 2017. This is not a levy from Council and the funds collected are paid to the State Government.

In the April rates notice, Lane Cove ratepayers will have received a classification status of their property.

The State Government releases its levy based on these different property classifications. Although this won’t come through until the July rate notice, there will be an online calculator that helps people identify their contribution in advance. It is understood the calculator will be available in early May.

Boost in support for tackling ice addiction Local families and individuals will have access to more services to tackle ice and other drug problems as a result of $3.6 million in federal funding.

Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman, said that additional services by the Northern Sydney Primary Health Network brought together some of the State’s most experienced drug rehabilitation and mental health services, including Odyssey House and New Horizons.

“Ice use knows no geographic or socio- economic boundaries.

Medical experts have reported a four-fold increase in the number of hospital admissions over the last few years on the north shore resulting from ice abuse.

“The expanded services will provide counselling and rehabilitation day programs particularly targeting adults and teenagers in our area,” Mr Zimmerman said.

Council tackles rat problem With construction around the Village displacing rat populations, there has been numerous sightings around the Plaza, particularly near the TAB, in Rosenthal Avenue and Birdwood Lane.

In response, a pest controller has been engaged by Council to eradicate rats in the Village area.

The program commenced in April and involves targeting rat nest exit/entry points as well as common areas (eg. bin stations).

A re-baiting program will continue until the end of June in the first instance, and then continue as required in the coming months.

In addition, businesses have been asked to maintain their own baiting programs to help complement Council’s efforts.

Submit your community events for the Lane Cove Festival After 25 years, the Cameraygal Festival is trialling a new name.

Now being referred to as the ‘Lane Cove Festival’, it will take place during the month of September. Community groups in the Lane Cove LGA are being invited to submit events to be included as part of this program.

The Lane Cove Festival is an opportunity for groups to raise their profile in the community, connect with new audiences and receive free publicity for Spring events.

Promising a broad range of exciting activities from a wide variety of groups, you can enter your proposed event by completing and submitting the online form at www.lanecove. nsw.gov.au/festivals. Submissions close Friday 26th May. If you would like to get involved but aren’t hosting an event, there are other ways to be included in the program.

The sneak thief of sight As the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, early detection and treatment is the key to preventing optic nerve damage and blindness from glaucoma.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases where the optic nerve is progressively damaged over time.

Made up of millions of nerve fibres, the optic nerve is critical for transmitting information from the eye to the brain.

Optic nerve damage results in the development of blind spots.

In most early glaucoma, the peripheral visual field is affected before central vision is lost. The danger with glaucoma is that most patients are unaware of this subtle peripheral vision loss until it is too late, which is why it is often referred to as the “sneak thief of sight”.

Glaucoma affects 1 in 10 Australians aged over 80 years old. Currently, up to 50% of people with glaucoma remain undiagnosed. Blindness from glaucoma is often preventable.

What are the risk factors?

Age - Advancing age is a major risk factor for the development of glaucoma.

Family history - Those with a close relative with glaucoma have a higher prevalence.

Intraocular pressure - High intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for glaucoma, but a normal intraocular pressure does not exclude a diagnosis.

Ethnic origin - Some ethnic groups have a higher prevalence.

Refractive error - Myopia (nearsightedness) is a risk factor for development of primary open angle glaucoma and Hyperopia (farsightedness) is a risk factor for development of primary angle closure glaucoma.

Central Corneal Thickness - Persons with thinner corneas are at increased risk.

Diabetes - Some evidence shows that there is a greater risk of glaucoma in people with type 2 diabetes.

Systemic hypertension (high BP) - Blood pressure can affect the health of the optic nerve.

Long-term steroid users - Corticosteroids are the main source of druginduced glaucoma.

Migraine and peripheral vasospasm - Migraine has been identified in several studies as a risk factor for glaucoma progression.

Previous eye trauma - All individuals with a history of significant blunt eye trauma or eye injury are at increased risk.

Getting a diagnosis Diagnosis requires multiple sources of information - like a jigsaw puzzle which includes a comprehensive history, assessment of risk factors, and a full ophthalmic examination.

Intraocular pressure measurements are only one small component in this process, and should not be relied upon for a diagnosis. If a diagnosis is unclear, you may require repeated evaluation of your optic nerve structure and function to look for progression over time.

Arthritic knees When we think of arthritic knees, we tend to think agerelated pain, disability and ultimately knee replacement surgery.

People often blame past running activity or loading for causing the arthritis. If only it was that simple! In fact, running for 30 minutes and squatting activities that load knees are helpful because they assist with muscle strength, joint lubrication and reduce inflammation.

X-rays suggest more than 50% of people over 65 have evidence of arthritis. Interestingly, there is strong discordance between arthritic changes on X-ray or MRI and an individual’s pain. This may be why a recent study out of the USA suggests more than one third of total knee replacements (TKR) are unnecessary. Other studies show 15-30% of people who do have TKRs have little or no functional improvement post-surgery.

There is good research showing physiotherapy is highly effective in the treatment of many orthopaedic conditions, particularly arthritic knees. Unfortunately, many people are not offered a trial of non-surgical management of knee arthritis and are not aware of the benefits of trialling physiotherapy for the condition. Unless you try physiotherapy first, you will not know if it could help you.

People over 65 years of age and those who are at medical risk can get the flu vaccine for free. Some of the risk conditions include asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, heart disease, immune disorders, diabetes, cancer and pregnancy. Children and even babies with serious diseases are included.

Otherwise the going price is about $12, which is pretty cheap if it keeps you from being really sick for a week or more.

Q: H ow do I know if I’ve got the real flu and not just a bad cold?

There are several cardinal symptoms of the flu.

It tends to hit suddenly, for example on the bus home from work. At work you felt fine, but in the time it took to get home you’ve suddenly started to feel terrible.

At least four of the following are needed for a flu diagnosis. They are a mix and match and vary in intensity. You’ll wish you had spent $ 12 or so and been vaccinated!

• Headache, muscle and joint aches and pains • High fever of over 39 degrees C • Rigors - that is shivering, shaking and then sweating profusely • A dry cough with little sputum • Aches in the chest and lungs

• Head cold symptoms far worse than a simple cold • Severe lethargy • Flushing • Aching eyes that don’t like bright light • Fatigue.

Q: W hat are the effects of the flu vaccine?

Most people have little or no side effects. When I had mine, I felt a bit off for a day or so and had a slightly tender arm (more off than usual, some would say!)

Because your immune system thinks it’s fighting the flu, you may get a toneddown version of some of the symptoms above. Apart from rare cases, these symptoms are nothing compared to the real dinky-di flu.

Q: H ow do I treat the flu if I get it?

Rest in bed is vital so your immune system can concentrate on the battle going on. This, together with plenty of fluids to make up for the sweat loss of water and body salts, are the mainstay of treatment.

See your doctor within 72 hours of the symptoms for one of two medications that cut down the flu virus replicating itself in your cells. These are ‘Tamiflu’ and ‘Relenza.’

Of course, paracetamol or aspirin and your favourite cough syrup will help.

Probably 80% or more people just get better with this treatment. More susceptible people may get bacterial secondary infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis, ear infections or pneumonia. If getting worse, see your doctor.

Q: A friend told me there

are both live and dead vaccines available for the flu. Is this true?

Yes, that’s correct. In Australia, a dead vaccine is used by injection, usually into the arm.

An analogy for a live vaccine is as if you took your car to a mechanic and had all but one cylinder removed. The car would barely move and be harmless, but still be recognised as a car.

In Australia the common live vaccines are MMR, measles, mumps and rubella, rotavirus for gastroenteritis in children, yellow fever, varicella or chickenpox and the shingles vaccine.

Say your car is in an accident and a write off. It’s still a car but totally useless. That’s a dead vaccine. The immune system recognises the ‘car’ bug whether live or dead and makes an antibody against that ‘car’ bug. (Look up Edward Jenner, the father of vaccination, in Wikipedia for the story of smallpox vaccination).

The recent case of the unvaccinated child that got tetanus underscores the need for vaccination. Don’t believe the anti-vaccine Nazis!

The number of people living with dementia doubles every year. Dementia affects the ability to perform every day activities by reducing the capacity of the brain for memory, thinking and normal behaviour. It is the most common cause of transition into residential aged care.

What can we do to prevent dementia? ● B vitamins – Low levels of folic acid and Vitamin B12 are associated with dementia.

Studies show that supplementing these vitamins slows down the loss of brain size as well as cognitive function. ● Reduce inflammation – Research shows that inflammation in the brain

Now that the winter sports season has started, it’s worth discussing mouthguards, the options available and what to expect from each.

We all know that mouthguards can either be purchased over the counter or custom moulded by a dentist. Is there a difference? The answer is a definitive yes, with a properly custom moulded mouthguard giving benefits beyond simply protecting the teeth.

A peer-reviewed study in 2014 followed 412 football players. Half of them had professionally fitted mouthguards from a dentist, and the other half had store-bought mouthguards of their choosing.

Interestingly, players with an off-theshelf mouthguards had a 230% higher (3.6% vs 8.3%) chance of sustaining a concussion head injury. This suggests that the function of a mouthguard goes far beyond protection of the teeth. The theory is that the better fit of a professionally fitted mouthguard helps to absorb shock, stabilise the head and neck, and limits movement of the jaw after a blow.

A poor fitting mouthguard can lead to the following detrimental effects:

This is most likely the reason that a daily dose of cocoa reduces the loss of nerves in the brain, and slows the decline in dementia. ● Lose weight (if needed) - Mid-life obesity, especially central obesity (ie. fat around the waist), is associated with an increased risk of dementia. ● Regular exercise – This reduces the incidence of

The result is a much greater chance of damage to the teeth and oral tissues in the event of trauma, and as we’ve seen, a greater chance of a concussion injury.

3. Poorer protection of the teeth and jaws. A properly fitted mouthguard will spread the forces over a much larger surface area, compared with a less well fitting one which has concentration of forces in small areas, leading to much higher rate of tooth fractures inside the mouthguard.

This diet has been associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. ● Brain stimulating leisure activities such as reading, board and card games, playing musical instruments and dancing are also associated with a reduced risk of dementia.

5. A poorer standard of play.

Players without a mouthguard, or with a mouthguard they aren’t confident with, simply won’t apply themselves to a contest with the same confidence as a player who feels more fully protected.

Also, the distraction of a mouthguard that keeps falling out of place detracts from the job at hand - winning the game!

Of course, professionally fitted mouthguards will be more expensive - often 10 times the cost or more. However, this is very quickly forgotten when a medical and or dental incident occurs. Quite simply, an injury is less likely with a custom fitted mouthguard, and if one was to occur, it would likely be less extensive.

Bill had mixed feelings when his son invited his Japanese business associate home to dinner. Bill had served in the Pacific war, but agreed this evening may help his son’s career. The dinner went well until his father produced a little notebook he had picked up on a distant battlefield. His son glared at him when he asked his visitor to translate the Japanese script.

The guest seemed warmly interested in the book, saying it appeared to be a Japanese soldier’s diary, of considerable historical value. Bill gave him the book, feeling somehow his life had come a full circle.

An indulgence he allowed himself occasionally.

“Roy Matheson! It is you. Remember me, Penny Bryce. We were at Ceduna Primary together”.

Surprised, Roy suddenly recalled the childhood summer he and Penny became friends. Leaning closer she touched the name tag on his shirt, still there from the in-house training.

Confused accounts of past events alternate with malice which contorts the woman’s face. She moves through the hallway gliding up and down stairs. The effort of returning several times, emotionally reliving life’s disappointments, tires her finally and drives her to her room to sleep.

The train approached the station, the air whistling as it went past.

Outside, the incessant rain battered against the windows. Within the damp cabins, passengers stood cheek by jowl in an array of awkward postures. Men and women stared unseeing with blank expressions on their faces, lost in their own thoughts as they contemplated the day before them. The clothes they wore seemed to match the mood – various hues of blue, black and grey.

Finally, the train ground to a halt and the doors banged open. The passengers streamed out onto the platform and so another day of work began.

I should have shut that balcony door. I felt horrified as the slimy lizard ran inside and under my bed. I tried smoking it out with incense, shining a flashlight on it, but it wouldn't budge.

Wildlife services had more urgent priorities.

Desperate, I called a professional snake catcher, ‘Harley,’ who would assist for a fairly large fee. Suddenly, I became determined to remove my scaly house mate. I jumped on my bed until it emerged. I swatted it outside with a duster. Cancelling Harley, as he highfived me over the phone, I conquered fear and felt like Wonder Woman.

Necessary medication as he had been known to become over enthusiastic in the waiting room when he met other dogs and even cats. Life's rich pattern...

These days, when making an online purchase, you’re pretty much held to ransom unless you tick your life away. By Liz Foster.

This Easter, I smugly reached for my pre-purchased, health fund member reduced movie tickets. To my surprise and dismay, they had expired – what a waste.

So back online I went.

The new transaction entailed jumping through the usual hoops and tick boxes – did I read the terms and conditions, did I know that they weren’t valid after 2pm on weekends, and so on.

Once finally purchased and printed, I saw the problem. The child vouchers had seven months’ validity; bizarrely the simultaneous transaction adult ones were only good for six months. To add insult to injury, I’d just bought an estimated years’ worth of movie tickets for the family.

Through grinding teeth and flared nostrils, I put aside this first world problem and my daughter and I set off with our new tickets. It’s a Friday, so we’re good with the weekend rules. But once we’re in the queue, we’re told our tickets aren’t valid for public holidays. Ah yes, today is Good Friday. No free tickets

allowed. (But they weren’t free, I paid good money for them – twice!) Please stump up the full amount again, Madam, which by the way is even more because of the screen we’re showing it on.

Choice magazine recently hired an actor to read out Kindle’s full terms and conditions; the 73,198 words took him nine hours. Even if reading them was practical, complex legalese leaves bewildered consumers unaware of any rights they may be giving up. As well as signing your life away, you might score the bonus of actually paying more online; booking a movie at Hoyts not only inflates the cost, you also get to use your printer and ink, all without involving a single human being except your good self.

On rechecking the Hoyts website, I can’t find anything about validity in the terms and conditions (it’s obliquely referred to as being ‘until the expiry date’). There’s no mention of public holiday exclusions in the Ts & Cs either.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to assume

Preparing your pet for a new baby Attending antenatal classes when pregnant with my first child, I was very concerned when the midwife warned about cats smothering babies in their cots.

How to prevent the family cat from jumping into the cot, potentially causing a disaster, is just one concern for new parents.

My own online research revealed several options to prevent this catastrophe from occurring.

Preventing the cat from jumping into the cot There were many purchasable devices online designed to prevent the cat from sleeping in the cot with the baby – everything from cradle canopies to crib nets. But then the question dawned on me – were the devices designed to deter cats more dangerous than the actual cat?

I contacted Dr Lewis Kirkham, veterinarian and animal behaviour expert, as well as author of ‘Tell Your Dog You’re Pregnant’ and ‘Tell Your Cat You’re Pregnant’.

Some facts about cats and babies: ● Cats tend to fear babies and generally do not seek to harm the child due to jealousy or spite. ● There has only ever been one proven documented case worldwide where a cat has smothered a baby. Other cases were SIDS related and blamed on the cat without supportive evidence. ● There have been numerous cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) caused by devices fitted to cradles and cots causing strangulation or smothering risks. Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids) do not recommend any devices be fitted to a cradle. ● Dogs generally pose more risk to a child than a cat. Owners need to be aware of how to read the body language of their dog to recognise fear and anxiety, as these signs often precede injury to the child.

Diseases transmitted from pets to baby (zoonoses) Many pet owners also have concerns about diseases transmitted from the pet to their baby, but the reality is that it is unusual for cats and dogs to transmit diseases, even though they are often blamed for infections.

For example, toxoplasmosis (a protozoal parasite) is more likely to be transmitted to the pregnant mother and her baby via the placenta when eating tissue cysts in undercooked meat, poultry or seafood. It is vital to ensure all meat is thoroughly cooked prior to eating. It is important where possible that expectant mothers avoid cleaning out the litter tray unless wearing gloves - ideally your partner should do it. Desensitising your pet to baby noises Dr Kirkham’s books come with a CD with various baby sounds. I played these to my cat during pregnancy, while providing her with lots of attention and her favourite food to positively associate the baby noises such as crying and gurgling with good experiences.

I also set up the cradle and the baby change table long before our baby arrived so that the cat was used to the new furniture.

Sleeping with the door shut did not pose any problems as the cat usually sleeps on the office chair in the study anyway. However, if your cat is used to sleeping on your bed, then it is important that this habit is changed prior to the baby coming along so that there is no negative association with less attention given to the cat when the baby arrives.

How much does it cost to...?

From where I sit, the notion of value is fairly clear cut. However, I appreciate that this is a learned skill and one that is not easily understood without experience, trust, and some habit probing.

One of the most common questions we get daily in our agency is “how much is it to...?” From my side of the desk, it’s a little like asking “how long is a piece of string?” The real answer lies within an amalgam of the information that we can provide, what the client expects or seeks, and what the client is prepared to pay. Or what s/he perceives is the value in that price.

I have recently been fortunate to enjoy several wonderful travel experiences. In early April I was one of 150 travel agents and travel journalists worldwide invited to try the beautiful new Silverseas Cruises Silver Muse before it commenced sailing two weeks later with real passengers onboard.

It wasn’t a simple jolly. Apart from an extensive inspection and several marketing meetings, which meant little time for relaxing poolside (so sad!), we spent a lot of time weighing up whether the ship delivered what it promised and was this fair value, vis-a-vis similar cruise ship offerings. I thought yes, albeit it was definitely a product for the very top end – the rooms were large and beautifully furnished, there were eight restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, a lovely spa and more. And if you compared the cost against transportation, a view room in fashionable cities such as Venice, Monaco or Cannes with breakfast, meals and alcoholic beverages included, a show each night, and all the extras, then it was extremely cost competitive and offered excellent value when compared to a do-it-yourself trip. Provided you prefer to travel in this degree of style and comfort.

At the other end of the spectrum, prior to joining the cruise I stayed in an airport hotel at Barcelona that cost $110 room only with a courtesy shuttle on demand. I was seriously worried this hotel would be a dive, and that the Trip Advisor comments were created by staff. Yet I quickly rationalised it was only for one night, so try it I would. What a wonderful hotel it turned out to be. Had it been in the city it, would have commanded twice the tariff and the breakfast put many a 5 star establishment to shame. This hotel over-delivered and certainly provided value.

As I write this article, I am currently staying in a Peruvian lodge that offers remote experiences while staying in supremely comfortable accommodation, eating terrific food,

utilising specialised guide services - and enduring high altitude walks that are definitely testing my lungs and stamina! (Why, oh why did I let myself be talked into a 14km trek ascending to 4350M!!!)

The daily rate is not inexpensive, however it is more reasonable than a lot of the Australian and New Zealand lodges that we sell – and includes so much more. Again, it’s another example of a travel product that might seem overpriced at face value but when you delve deeper to extract what is offered, the tariff seems so much more realistic. And this is before accounting for the operational difficulties that ‘remote’ presents.

I recently had a client request exit row seats for his flight to Europe. All up, the additional cost added $780 to his $1800 flight. Was it worth it? He thought so, but others wouldn’t.

Ditto flying business class. When you walk past Trendsetter’s Lane Cove store you might occasionally see an offer for business class flights at $5000-$6000.

We know this is still a lot of money, but compared to a $10,000 option, it is

sensational value. Similarly, many of our walk-ins are prepared to pay $300 for a cruise that they wouldn’t touch at $1000. Once we tell them what is included, they hope to be thrilled with a bargain, are realistic about the possibility of being disappointed but importantly, their value requirements have been met.

So please, do consult our wealth of knowledge when investing your valuable, hard-earned dollars in your dream travel experience.

Looks can be deceptive – cheap may be good or bad, expensive may be poor or excellent value. On their own, the terms cheap and expensive are value judgements and are relatively meaningless. We are here to help you find what works for you, and what will deliver wonderful memories at the right price point. Lentil as Anything The eggs have been found, and the year is in full swing. It won’t be long now till the bells start to ring!

Phew! It’s almost half the year gone, and I can hear you saying “What?

Already?!”

Even though the dates for Easter change each year, I think most folks really get into their year after these first term holidays.

Everyone’s settled with routines, daylight saving is gone, and we have to stretch just a little further to get the best out of life.

Planning meals sounds awfully boring to some folk and even thinking about it can be a chore! However, if you can break through that chore mentality and understand that planning will give you more time each night, then maybe it will be the key you need to make a change.

You may have noticed the increase in vegetable prices, and it’s going to be like that for the next six months or so until the farmers up north recover from the floods.

Managing the budget for meal planning means having a couple of reliable dishes ready to go, whilst trying to make the most of winter produce.

French lentils are my perfect winter ‘go to’. I add them to a lamb or beef stew, stir them through a vinaigrette before pouring over roast vegetables, or toss them through salad leaves with grilled chicken or fish.

You can buy French Du Puy lentils, or there is also the Australian grown French green lentils from Mount Zero in the Wimmera Region (they are actually a deep marbled dusty brown green color).

Cook up a kilo and keep them in the fridge (they will last 4-5 days).

Alternatively, batch and freeze in portion sizes and they are easy to use for last minute warm-up winter dishes.

Here is how I cook my lentils, with some suggestions of how you can use them to add interest to a range of winter dishes.

You can tell that I’m already daydreaming about cold winter afternoons and a good book. Next time I’ll be ringing bells for Christmas in July!

FRENCH STYLE PUY LENTILS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Roasted pumpkin with lentils, goats’ cheese, spinach and balsamic syrup, with pomegranate pearls and flowers for extra pizazz!

2 small brown onions, diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 unpeeled carrot, diced 2 stalks celery, diced 1 bay leaf 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 rashers of bacon or one chorizo sausage (optional) 6 sprigs fresh thyme ½ bunch parsley, chopped 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1.5 litres water 500 grams French style Puy Lentils P omegranate pearls and flowers for extra pizazz

METHOD

How to use cooked lentils…

• To a medium sized heavy based saucepan or pot, add the oil, onions, carrot and celery on medium heat and sauté for 5-6 minutes until starting to brown and soften. Add the tomato paste and garlic (and bacon/chorizo if using) and cook for another 3 minutes. Then add the lentils, thyme and water.

• Turn the heat to low and cook covered, stirring every 5 minutes or so to prevent sticking. The lentils will take about 20 minutes to cook till tender, adding more water if necessary (it should have more of a spoon-able, tinned beans consistency).

Take off the heat, check the seasoning and add sea salt, fresh ground pepper and chopped parsley.

• Divide into portioned containers to freeze or use within 5 days of cooking.

• Add 1 cup of cooked lentils to a vegetable soup for extra protein/fibre.

• Sprinkle over roasted pumpkin with crumbled feta and spinach for a warm winter salad.

• Roasted chicken salad with fresh orange and olives - add a couple of spoons of lentils to the dressing and drizzle over your salad.

• Add a cup to your bolognaise sauce recipe. Or stir through a risotto with rocket and toasted flaked almonds.

• Slow cook a red wine and beef casserole and stir through some lentils for a ‘Saturday on the lap’ lunch.

• Oven bake pork sausages, serve with lentils, pancetta, rosemary and mash.

• An easy way to make a fabulous soup is to tray roast all your vegetables.

Toss roughly chopped onions, celery, carrot, chunks of pumpkin, a tablespoon of olive oil and cumin and roast for 40 – 50 minutes till soft. Using a blender or food processor, blend till smooth with either coconut milk, water, chicken or vegetable stock. Try cauliflower and add a little crumbled blue cheese at the end, or celeriac and granny smith apples with nutmeg and a swirl of cream.

Last month’s article by Jon Johanssen ‘The case of the icon misnomer’ (page 22) generated comment from groups and individuals defending the Lloyd Rees Bandstand's position within the Plaza.

The following are the responses received by TVO. In his article, Jon Johannsen misses the point about the National Trust listed Lloyd Rees Bandstand. He infers that it can’t be iconic or a heritage item because it dates from 1983 and asserts that it has received its “iconic label by default”.

The Local History section of the Lane Cove Library reveals that Lloyd Rees was involved with planning the original bandstand from 1980, donating money and corresponding with Harry Howard and John Supran (the architects) and with Council about its concept and design.

Rees’ inspired view of the bandstand was as a focal point for the Plaza, “a place for public speakers, open air dramatics and concerts, a central gathering place for the people of Lane Cove.”

Nearly two generations have played on the Bandstand’s steps and on its stage, and sheltered under its canopy. The adjacent playground area which, like the Bandstand is shaded by sail-cloth, is filled every day by parents who have purchased a coffee and engaged with others, while their children play safely.

The Bandstand is a vital part of the fabric of Lane Cove. Our current Council removed its local Heritage listing and with that they took away its statutory protection. It’s a shame an architect like Mr Johannsen can’t tell the difference between a valued local item of cultural and social heritage, and a ‘carbuncle’.

The Lloyd Rees Bandstand, erected in 1983, is yet again under threat following a call for its removal by local architect Jon Johannsen, in an article that tries to undermine its pedigree. Johannsen’s call for its removal is alarming in the extreme.

His recommendation appears to arise from his negative opinions about its neglected appearance and his assumption that it will be replaced by something better. To be as confident as Johannsen is that Lloyd Rees would be ‘very supportive’ of having a new ‘iconic gesture’ appears 26 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 262 I MAY 2017

presumptuous. Rather it may signal that once again the public space may be asked to give way to further commercial use of the Plaza that has led to boxy structures and a price to pay for sitting in them.

In 2009, the Lloyd Rees Bandstand and its associated Plaza was listed or classified by the National Trust (NSW). Lane Cove Library’s local history collection holds Lloyd Rees’s extensive correspondence and other records that unequivocally attest to his involvement with and his financing of the Bandstand. The independent ‘Dickson Rothschild Heritage Report ('May 2009) also confirmed its significance when it was threatened with demolition.

In 2013, a majority vote of the current Councillors ended the Bandstand’s brief period of legal protection when it removed it from its listing as a Heritage item in the Lane Cove Local Environment Plan (LEP).

The Bandstand’s enduring success as the absolute ‘heart’ of community in Lane Cove continues its original function as conceived and designed by Harry Howard (1930-2000), a highly awarded, leading modernist Australian landscape architect; and the involvement of Lloyd Rees (18951988) a Northwood local and one of Australia’s most pre-eminent landscape artists, a skilled draughtsman and painter.

The most recent renovation of the Bandstand involved comprehensive community consultation and input. It was carefully integrated into the Plaza upgrade, completed under the guidance of architect John Supran (who worked on the original Bandstand construction).

The National Trust Statement of Significance cites the Bandstand’s “… historical significance as an integral part of the innovative urban design of this public space, the first suburban plaza to be created through a major road closure”.

It is “rare as an early Australian exercise in tensile steel and polyester construction and an unusual, modern version of a traditional community facility.”

In his letter proposing the idea to Council, Rees’s insightful suggestion that

the Plaza required “a visual focus… such as a bandstand with a touch of phantasy about it; …. useful for summer shade and for public addresses and music etc” left a legacy, an enduring performance and social space for Lane Cove that is unrivalled.

It is with regret that the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society confronts such an assault on a place that makes Lane Cove special. Lane Cove is diminished when such a valued, historically significant sculptural element of ‘Public Art’ for the community is left under-recognised and wilfully unprotected. Concerned residents should urge Councillors to acknowledge its significance and protect it by reinstating it as a Heritage item in the Lane Cove LEP. Margaret Bergomi (President) and Shauna Forrest (Secretary), Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society Jon Johanssen says that the Lane Cove Bandstand is more carbuncle than ‘icon’ and should therefore be replaced.

I accept that maintenance and acoustics may be problematic, but the Bandstand does seem to have served well enough for several decades. I suggest that any commitment of funds for a replacement structure should be delayed until completion of the Rosenthal Street development, so that the ensemble of civic spaces can be assessed as a whole.

Mr Johanssen also advocates a broad definition of the word ‘iconic’ as “important as a symbol”, and insists that a building, a person, and even a gesture can be characterised in this way, in effect as standing for something else. A Message from the Mayor of Lane Cove

Councillor Deborah Hutchens Lane Cove has a truly superb history of volunteering. A number of organisations and community movements have only been possible thanks to volunteers from our small community. From Lane Cove & North Side Community Services, to Red Shield Appeals, sustainability campaigns and community fundraisers, Lane Cove residents have been giving back to others in their community for years.

The hours, days and weeks of time our residents give to community groups, sporting associations, committees and schools helps make Lane Cove the community it is today. Lane Cove would not be the same without you and for that we owe you our sincerest thanks.

It was wonderful to be able to host the annual Citizenship Awards presentation on 3rd May. This event provides recognition of the achievements of both volunteers and those who excel in their chosen fields. It is important to provide the means to recognise those who make a difference in our community and National Volunteer Week is a great opportunity to do this.

The new Community Recycling Centre (CRC) is now open in Artarmon following a formal opening by Hon. Anthony Roberts MP last month.

This is a fantastic initiative that helps Lane Cove residents safely dispose of problem waste from home. If you missed last month’s electronic waste collection run by Council, then you can head along to the CRC at 8 Waltham Road, Artarmon. Visit Council’s website for opening hours and accepted items.

The Centre is a joint-Council resource that was made possible through funding from the NSW EPA.

ANZAC Day 2017 marks the third year of the four year Centenary commemorations for World War I. The Lane Cove community once again turned out in large numbers to pay their respects to our service men and women. I would like to thank the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch for leading the service along with Rev. Craig Potter.

Thanks also to the Cameraygal Wind Symphony, Lane Cove Choristers, Lane Cove and Artarmon Girl Guides, Tambourine Bay Sea Scouts, 1st Lane Cove Scouts and of course, Council staff. The service is a great example of Lane Cove’s community spirit and a valued tradition that we look forward to continuing. I was also honoured to attend services at Caroline Chisholm Nursing Home and Gladesville RSL Club in the lead up to ANZAC Day.

Children’s Voices for Reconciliation The regional Guringai Festival runs from Reconciliation Week through to NAIDOC Week each year. As part of the Festival, Council will be hosting its annual Lane Cove Children’s Voices for Reconciliation event on Thursday 1 June.

Now in its 21st year, this combined schools performance event will feature young people of all ages sharing their voice through music, dance and song.

Fire & Emergency Services Levy Council is ensuring that Lane Cove residents are aware of the upcoming changes to the collection of the NSW Government’s Fire and Emergency Services Levy. From July, the levy will be collected by Council (previously collected through individual insurers) and then passed on to the NSW Government. In April, Lane Cove ratepayers were notified of their classification ahead of the release of the rate from the NSW Government.

Update on buses servicing Lane Cove Bus Interchange I welcomed the announcement by Anthony Roberts MP last month that there will be an additional two buses servicing the Lane Cove Interchange during the morning peak. The increase in population in Lane Cove has put increased pressure on public transport and this is a positive step towards addressing the need for improved services for our residents.

St Leonards Square GroundBreaking I attended a ground-breaking event at the site of the St Leonards Square development on 1 May. This milestone event was also attended by Hon Andrew Constance, MP NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure. This new development represents a critical step in the journey to realising Council’s vision of St Leonards as a walkable, liveable, connected suburb.

Council Merger update Council’s appeal was heard in the Supreme Court last month and at the time the TVO went to print, we were still awaiting the outcome of our case.

2017 Influenza vaccines now available - Recently I welcomed the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, for the launch of the 2017 National Immunisation Program (NIP). Minister Hunt announced that vaccinations to protect Australians against four strains of this year’s influenza virus are now available – and are free of charge to those in the most vulnerable groups of getting sick.

This includes people aged 65 years and over; pregnant women; most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who suffer from chronic conditions.

Vaccinating from April allows people to develop immunity before transmission of the virus increases from June, with the peak being around August. I encourage our local residents over the age of 65 or those that meet the other criteria to consider getting a flu shot.

Boost in support for tackling Ice addiction- Medical experts have reported a four-fold increase in the number of hospital admissions on the North Shore over the last few years resulting from ice abuse.

Local families and individuals will have access to more services to tackle ice and other drug problems as a result of $3.6 million in Federal funding for our community – part of the Turnbull Government’s National Ice Action Plan.

Locally, the Northern Sydney Primary Health Network has been given the lead to work with experts and community organisations to improve support for families and individuals. The expanded services will provide counselling and rehabilitation day programs particularly targeting adults and teenagers in our area.

Funding announced for community legal centres - I welcome the recent announcement by the Attorney General of an injection of funds to the legal assistance sector.

A further $55.7 million will be provided over the next three years to community legal centres and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services for frontline family law and family violence services, in particular further assistance for women and children affected by family violence.

ANZAC Day 2017- Thank you to the thousands of local residents who attended various ANZAC Day services throughout our community. Whilst I cannot get to every service, each year I do my very best to move around the electorate and support our local RSL Sub-branches and veterans support services.

This year I attended services in Hunters Hill, Kirribilli, Chatswood and Willoughby. I was impressed and quite moved at just how many locals of all ages attended dawn services and ceremonies throughout the day.

Multicultural Arts and Festivals grants - Applications for 2016-17 Multicultural Arts and Festivals grants funding have opened. This annual Commonwealth Government program aims to encourage respect and a sense of belonging for Australians of all backgrounds.

Organisations that host events offering Australians the opportunity to come together and experience different cultural heritages and traditions are encouraged to apply.

Anthony Roberts recently visited Artarmon Public School to announce funding for the school’s new redevelopment.

All the HALLmarks of a great school - There are many great and inspiring schools and other places of learning within my electorate of Lane Cove.

One of the joys of being an MP is visiting schools, meeting with students and their teachers and going away knowing that this country is in good hands moving forward.

Recently I announced Artarmon Public School’s much needed and long anticipated new hall. Now it’s a reality - one that is greatly welcomed and most deserved.

Schools are the incubation point for the next generation of community leaders and Artarmon Public School is a mix of brilliant teachers, talented students and an innovative and supportive P&C community.

On my latest visit to Artarmon Public School, I had the pleasant task of making the announcement of a $26 million commitment by the Berejiklian Government for the school’s redevelopment.

The redevelopment includes a new three-storey building comprising 21 teaching spaces and library. There will be a new amenities block and Abbott Lane is earmarked for closure to improve the linkage between the two school sites.

The NSW Government gave the green light for this comprehensive program after my approaches backed by widespread community support.

As the Member for Lane Cove, let me say the good news doesn’t start and end with Artarmon Public School.

The current Government is about promoting and investing in education, which wasn’t the case when NSW Labor was last in charge.

In coming years, the Government in which I proudly serve will build the Lindfield Learning Village and Cammeraygal High School Senior Campus. Both projects are now at the design stage.

I am also excited to announce plans are underway for upgrades to Willoughby Public School, Willoughby Girls High School and Killara Public School.

The total capital investment in NSW public school education infrastructure in 2016-17 is almost $554 million.

The NSW Government has allocated $2.6 billion dollars for capital investment in public schools over the period 2016-17 to 2019-20.

It is this type of positive news that makes me proud to be part of a progressive, committed Government.

Smallest Council continues to punch above its weight - Hunter’s Hill Council has been presented with a prestigious Management Excellence Award for its 'Future Gladesville' project.

Council staff, in conjunction with the consultancy Place Partners, undertook the ‘Future Gladesville’ project in 2016.

Its main objective was to provide a rigorous and data-driven foundation from which to identify potential changes to the Hunters Hill Consolidated DCP 2013.

This exemplary project delivered an amended DCP for the Centre that clearly articulates community values, illustrates to developers how this can be achieved and provides the framework for delivering a public focused centre.

Anzac Eve Memorial Service - In all military campaigns, many celebrities and sports figures have taken the time to support our troops abroad. It’s a chance for these celebrities to acknowledge, on our behalf, all the hard work and personal sacrifices of our defence forces.

The 94th consecutive Anzac Eve Memorial Service was held in the Hunters Hill Town Hall on the evening of Friday 21st April. The service focused on the important role that entertainers played in boosting the morale of defence force personnel.

Council ‘s guest speaker was renowned Australian entertainer Col Joye, who together with the Joy Boys and other Australian artists, went to Vietnam and entertained the troops at Nui Dat’s Luscombe Bowl on 18 August 1966.

Just a few hours later and a few kilometres away, elements of the Australian Task Force found themselves fighting one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War at Long Tan. What is often forgotten is that the entertainers were sometimes in harm's way and amidst the conflict.

LTCOL Jodi Lording CSM, RAAOC from the 8th Combat Service Support Battalion, gave a perspective on the role of entertainment and music in the armed forces in the modern era and students from St Joseph’s College reflected on what Anzac means to youth. The Hunters Hill SES, local Scouts and members of the Armed Forces, together with the local RSL Sub-Branch members and the community, all shared in the remembrance of this very important annual event.

Northern Sydney Community Recycling CentreThe Councils of northern Sydney have long understood the potential of collaboration for stronger environmental and economic results in waste management.

Through the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (NSROC), we have explored projects big and small to minimise waste and encourage recycling to reduce the volume of waste that is sent to landfill.

The NSROC Regional Waste Strategy identified problem wastes as a priority and work started in 2014 to tackle this cooperatively as a group of councils.

This joint effort has culminated in the opening of the Northern Sydney Recycling Centre at Waltham Street in Artarmon. This centre can receive problem wastes, such as car batteries, paints, motor oils, electronics and other wastes that cannot be placed in domestic waste bins.

'A still life with attitude' by Pamela Fairburn.

Art that reflects your personality A former President of the Lane Cove Art Society, Pamela Fairburn was the entertaining guest demonstrator for the Society’s March annual general meeting. In our over scripted world, Pamela’s outgoing personality was a breath of fresh air.

The stage was set and Pamela was in total control of her chosen medium - watercolour. A still life of flowers in a jug on a rug was arranged, with attention being paid to positioning and colour. The goal was to create a still life with ‘attitude’.

Before painting, Pamela talked about still life in general and how the items chosen needed to have some significance for her. She shared the story behind some of the elements selected. The little jug was a gift from her husband and belonged to Margaret Olley. The rug was oozing with sentimental value as it came from a destination close to her heart, Bolivia. These special items imbued the work with extra meaning for this artist and it showed in the final work.

Pamela publicly confessed to having many ‘loves’. “I just love colour - I can’t help myself.” “I like being experimental and I love doing lots of different artwork, including mixed media and acrylics.”

Using a very thick paper (640gsm as it doesn’t buckle), water was freely scattered over the surface, painting the positive shape (the outline of the actual objects) of the composed still life. Windsor and Newton artist quality watercolours were used.

“Always use good quality paper and good quality paints,” remarked Pamela, as she dropped dobs of watercolour onto the wet paper. “With watercolour, magic happens when colours bleed into one another. Sometimes it’s the accidents that ‘shine’ in a work.”

As she worked, Pamela’s eyes were constantly moving between the still life composition and the paper. An Aladdin’s 32 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 262 I MAY 2017

Combs, different brushes, craft knives, sticks and new materials such as artgraf (like chalk) were all used in her artwork.

The goal was textural diversity. Hence spatters from brushes were scattered over the work. As Pamela was doing this, she talked about the different resist techniques that can be used to get interesting surfaces.

For example, sprinkling talcum powder onto the paper doesn’t allow the water to penetrate, so interesting effects can occur and it is great for creating cloud patterns. Salt crystals are not used as Pamela believes they can contaminate the paper.

Masking fluid can also be used to protect the surface below.

In watercolour, the light is captured by retaining the white of the paper. Lighter colours were brushed in first. The later stage saw darker colours being added which then brought definition to the objects making up the still life. If it is too dark, dab it with absorbent paper whilst it is still wet.

Pamela is not limited by the colours of her still life. “It is up to the artist to select what colours they want to use.”

An intuitive, experimental approach describes Pamela’s approach to her artwork. “Why not try getting interesting effects with rice, sugar, coffee or tea?” The still life is only a guide. Be led by your imagination but be careful not to overwork things.

At the start of her demonstration, Pamela stated that she was going to do “a still life with attitude.”

The still life she produced was anything but ‘still.’

Pamela’s marks resonated with life and vitality – a perfect mirror of this accomplished artist’s vibrant personality.

‘Through the channel’, Pamela Fairburn, Mixed media

Much loved local artist, Pamela Fairburn will be exhibiting her latest work in the Gallery from May 17th to 10th June.

Titled ‘Precious White’, this exhibition of paintings has been inspired by a recent trip to Antarctica. Exploring light, reflections, textures, colours and human stories, Pamela has a real appreciation for the pristine and fragile nature of the environment. Aware of the effects that global warming is having on the landscape, Pamela has captured an environment that is constantly changing and under threat.

If you are planning a trip to Antarctica, or would enjoy this intoxicating landscape through another’s eyes, then please visit the Gallery during this exhibition.

Opening night is 17th May from 6pm, with special guest Greg Mortimer OAM, explorer, adventurer, geologist and mountaineer.

Works are for sale, so you can take a piece of the Antarctic with you.

Exhibiting alongside ‘Precious White’ will be local photographers Andreas Gschwind and Thomas Buckwalter.

As part of the larger Head On Festival, this exhibition celebrates the medium of photography. Both Andreas and Thomas are fascinated by the urban landscape. Andreas is attracted to colour and form, creating beautiful abstracted images that blur the real with the imaginary. Thomas captures precious moments and happenings in the city that we often walk past and miss. He sees the irony and humour in things that happen by chance.

Both talented photographers, Andreas and Thomas have come together in this group show to present images that capture the imagination.

Works are for sale and the exhibition is free. In addition, an artist talk will be held on Saturday 20th June from 11am.

How does it work?

This collection point has been running for over six months and is regularly used by residents.

Under the direction of skilled conductor Mark Brown, LCYO performed excerpts from works-in-progress including the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B Major and Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie.

The audience was then given a rare treat as Frankie Bouchier, accompanied

by Eun Jung Byun on piano, gave beautiful renditions of ‘O Del Mio Amato Ben’ by Stefano Donaudy and ‘Du Bist Die Ruh’ by Franz Schubert. Frankie, a former LCYO trumpet player, is currently shining in his vocal and opera studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Better not to secretly record or videotape In arguing a case before the Family Court, you may want proof of an event (or events) that supports your case - incidents of violence by a partner, for example.

You may lack proof to back up your case. Many events take place behind closed doors, when no one else is present. How do you prove what happened?

What about a video or a sound recording that corroborates your allegations? Can a recording of conversations, or a video of the acts of the other party, be used as evidence in Family Law proceedings?

Generally speaking, the answer is no. Our society treasures and protects the right of privacy. Under the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW), it is a serious offence to install or use a listening device, optical surveillance device, tracking device or data surveillance device, with the intent of recording private conversations, or observing, tracking or spying on a person. The exception is where the recording is done with the consent of the other party, or by law enforcement agencies. The maximum penalty is five years imprisonment. Any evidence obtained by such covert means is considered illegal and generally not allowed or taken into account in any court proceedings.

However, there is an exception to this when it comes to Family Law. In a recent case before the Family Court, a mother tried to submit voice recordings and a transcript of conversations between her and the father of their children - recordings made without his knowledge.

She alleged serious family violence on his part. The

Judge was prepared to admit this as evidence. He noted an exception in the Surveillance Devices Act 2007, where such evidence is “reasonably necessary for the protection of the lawful interests of a party.”

In this case, the Judge accepted that the father had a “charming public face but engaged in serious destructive family violence in the home.” The Judge noted that it can be notoriously difficult to obtain evidence of family violence which takes place behind closed doors. The Judge found the father had engaged in violence of a coercive and controlling nature in the home, which had terrified the wife. He then restricted the father’s time with the children and required time spent with the children to be independently supervised.

So, generally it is not a good idea to secretly record another person’s conversations or actions.

It is a criminal offence and the courts won’t generally condone it or allow the evidence to be used in court. But in some cases, the courts may consider any evidence that shows the true situation. And if violence is proved, the courts will take strong protective action.

Generally, it is much better to use other means to build your case, and to discuss the situation with a family lawyer before embarking on radical measures.

Councils join forces to promote pedestrian safety

Sydney Sailmakers and Geotherm battled it out for the top two places in the Australian Sailing Championships hosted by Lane Cove Club.

Local ‘kids’ take out Australian Sailing Championship Nick Press and Andrew Hay (sailing Sydney Sailmakers) convincingly won the 82nd Australian 12ft Sailing Skiff Championship in an event hosted by Lane Cove Club over Easter.

Both Press and Hay grew up in Lane Cove (Press in the late 80s and Hay in the late 70s) and started their sailing at the Lane Cove Club. This capped off a very successful season for the pair, who also won the State Championship, the Interdominion Championship and now the Australian Championship.

Although it was expected to be close, their usual sparring partners Geotherm (sailed by Brett Hobson and Bill Lusty and representing the Sydney Flying Squadron at Kirribilli) couldn’t match them on their home waters around Greenwich and

Cockatoo Island.

Third was another Sydney Flying Squadron boat, Lincoln Crowne Australasia, sailed by Jonathon Temple and Richard Jones, who also took out the Veterans’ Trophy. Lane Cove’s Gael and James Glassock (sailing Cunning Ham) won the Junior crown.

Lane Cove boats then filled the next seven places from a fleet of 24 boats.

The first Queensland boat Little Bus, sponsored by The Kitchen Maker, finished a disappointing tenth in the regatta.

Held in conjunction was a handicap event, won by Lane Cove’s John Mulquiney and Robbie Polec sailing Handful.

Lane Cove has joined with other councils from Sydney’s northern suburbs to raise awareness of pedestrian safety – especially the distractions of mobile phones.

The Distracted…? pedestrian safety campaign is aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian casualties.

Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks of the NSW Police Force said that many of the state’s 69 pedestrian deaths last year could have been prevented with more attention paid to traffic by pedestrians.

"Police have a continued focus on pedestrian activity in the hope that we can save lives. Those pedestrians that continue to put others at risk by concentrating on their phone as opposed to the road, cutting across traffic, and taking risks will suffer the consequences of either an infringement notice, or being involved in either a serious injury, or a fatal crash," he said.

TIPS FOR PEDESTRIANS: ● Wait until all vehicles have stopped before stepping off the kerb ● Wear bright or light coloured clothing at night or when visibility is low ● Put away your phone before you cross the road ● Always use pedestrian crossings ● Pay attention to traffic lights – especially pedestrian “don’t walk” signals The campaign will feature print advertising, face-to-face promotions and various types of outdoor advertising to maximise the message reach.

102 years ago today, our father – Sapper Dudley Oakes - was one of the first ashore at Gallipoli.

Dad survived the war passing away aged 88 in 1979, having fathered six children of whom Ronald was the eldest.

When our mother passed away in 1935, Ronald and my other elder brother John went to live with an Aunt who lived in Kenneth St, Longueville.

The rest of us lived with Dad at our home in Willoughby.

Two months short of turning 19, my brother Ronald enlisted into the Air Force Reserves.

He transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force in May 1942 as an Air Gunner, which was followed by 10 months of training in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

Ronald was then deployed to England in March 1943.

Once in England, Ronald was posted to 196 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. After being trained on Wellington bombers, they flew operational sorties on enemy ports and industrial centres in Europe.

The Squadron were then trained in Stirling bombers and carried out various transport, glider-towing and supplydropping flights as well as parachuting Commando and Special Operations Executives (SOE) into enemy occupied territory.

In late 1943, Ronald was posted to 115 Squadron of the Royal Air Force and was trained to fly and fight in the Lancaster bomber.

Ronald’s Flying Log Book notes that he was the Mid Upper Air Gunner.

Throughout November and December they flew missions from their base in England across to Berlin in Germany.

On the night of 14th January 1944, Ronald’s aircraft was one of 500 Lancasters tasked to fly from their base at Little Snoring to the target at Brunswick in Germany. In a straight line it was some 650 kilometres, but the actual flight path would have been much more as they

Ronald’s aircraft did not return, believed shot down.

His body and those of his crew - the pilot was from New Zealand, two were from Australia and four from England - are buried in a collective grave in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Hanover in Germany.

Ronald was a couple of weeks short of his 21st birthday.

Bomber Command had the highest casualty rate with 59% of aircrew either being killed, wounded or taken as Prisoners of War. Rest in Peace
