It’s interesting reviewing some of the statistics that are presented within the Greater Sydney Commission’s report for the North District, which Lane Cove falls within.

The projections for population increase in our area over the next 20 years will see it grow by almost 50%, from our current 35,000 residents to over 50,000 residents by 2036. To help accommodate this increase, housing supply targets for Lane Cove are another 1900 dwellings in the next five years through to 2021.

The Commission’s report predicts that over 65 year olds will account for almost 40% of all the North District’s growth, with the number of school-aged children increasing by 20%. This does raise questions about how our transport networks, health, education and other services are likely to cope. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the draft Plan by the end of March. For more details, turn to page 6.

In recognition of the fact that half of Lane Cove’s residents now live in apartments, Council is providing free catering packs to this segment of our community to encourage these residents to host their own event.

Despite the false hope that was provided in February as Premier Berejiklian reviewed the issue of forced mergers, it continues to roll ahead. Lane Cove Council’s appeal against the Land and Environment Court’s judgement is scheduled for April, at which point a final outcome is likely to be confirmed. See page 6.

Love Thy Neighbour Lane Cove is becoming increasingly multicultural with one-in-three residents born overseas. Now with a population of over 35 thousand people, more than half live in medium or high-density housing.

Despite this growth, taking time to connect with neighbours is an important part of feeling connected within the community. A nationwide celebration at the end of March will help recognise and celebrate this fact.

With Lane Cove’s continued growth, the ways in which we live, relate and engage as a community reflect our changing demographics.

Special interest groups are constantly being created to cater to wide-ranging interests and to help people find their place.

Whether it be English conversation classes, cooking groups, Chinese dance groups, community gardens, sustainability groups, martial arts, networking events, business groups, choirs, music, yoga, cultural playgroups, bushcare – there is likely to be something that matches your particular cultural, professional, recreational or social interests.

Festivals and events are held year round and also play an important part in bringing our community together. Several celebrate the diversity of our community, including Guringai Festival (raising awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), Autumn Harmony (including activities like refugee led cooking classes), Kaleidoscope (showcasing cultural food, dress and dancing) and Lunar New Year.

In his book The Art of Belonging, Hugh Mackay discussed the importance of community participation in providing a sense of place and belonging.

“Communities don’t just happen – rather we have to create and build them.

“The secret to the art of belonging is no secret at all: it is to accept that ‘belonging’ is not dependent on finding some Utopian setting. It’s not where you live, it’s how you live.”

National initiatives, such as Neighbour Day, are also celebrated locally. This Australia-wide event takes place in March each year and encourages people to connect with people living in their neighbourhood.

Lane Cove Council is supporting a number of local Neighbour Day activities on Sunday 26th March and is encouraging everyone to get involved.

Host an event with your neighbours

Did you know?

In 2015, Lane Cove became the first Council in Australia to receive the status of ‘Very Neighbourly Organisation’.

With more than half of Lane Cove’s residents now living in apartment blocks, this year Council is focussing on this segment of our community by providing residents with an opportunity to receive free BBQ and morning/afternoon tea packs when they host their own Neighbour Day event.

Since every apartment block is different, Council is asking residents to identify how and when they will run an event. Council will then help offset the cost of food through catering packs sourced from local businesses.

To be recognised as this, Council demonstrated the following five principles:

Strengthening communities and building better relationships with the people who live around us;

2

Creating safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns;

3

Promoting tolerance, respect and understanding;

4

Breaking down community barriers; and

5

Protecting the elderly, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged.

To be eligible, an application form (see www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/lovewhereyoulive) must completed by a member of your strata or body corporate who will be the main point of contact for the event. Items such as event invitations and posters will be delivered

by Council with either BBQ or morning/ afternoon tea packs and vouchers that can be collected/redeemed by the event organiser on the day of your event.

Although Neighbour Day is officially Sunday 26th March, Council will support events being organised through March or April.

Neighbour Day

What is it?

Celebrate at Hughes Park with your neighbours Everyone is invited to come along to a Neighbour Day celebration from 12-2pm on Sunday 26th March at Hughes Park, 304-314 Burns Bay Road.

There will be fun activities and entertainment including the Lane Cove Jazz Band, face painting, First Nation Indigenous dancers from Riverview College and a sausage sizzle organised by the Rotary Club of Lane Cove.

To showcase Lane Cove’s strong sense of culture and community, locals are also being asked to bring along a favourite recipe (not from a cookbook) and a few paragraphs on the memories associated with this recipe and how they reflect your family traditions, culture and/or faith.

This initiative, developed by FoodFaith, is entitled Recipes: Re-discovering Our Roots and aims to celebrate our cultural and faith diversity.

Photographers will be available, so you are also welcome to make the dish and bring it along on the day. Chefs will receive an image of their creation!

Hosted by the Lane Cove Community Chaplaincy, the Rotary Club of Lane Cove and FoodFaith, the event is supported by Lane Cove Council.

Proposed road and parking changes Council is considering road upgrades and parking changes within the Village area to cater for the additional traffic generated

by Lane Cove’s increasing population, along with the upcoming Rosenthal Avenue Car Park Redevelopment.

THE UPGRADES UNDER CONSIDERATION INCLUDE: 1. The installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Burns Bay Road, Coxs Lane and Tambourine Bay Road which will result in the need to change access to/from Sutherland Street and impact on traffic through nearby Graham Street.

2. Making changes to Finlayson Street and Coxs Lane to improve traffic flow. This would include changes to the width of the road and/ or parking arrangements to improve safety and ease congestion as more cars seek to connect to Epping Road.

3. A longer-term project to help provide better access to Epping Road via revisions to the traffic signals at the intersection with Coxs Lane.

Although this is not an immediate task, Council is using the opportunity to consult with the community at this early stage to assist during the planning process.

Council to proceed with Merger court action At its February meeting, Council voted to proceed with the appeal against the Land and Environment Court’s judgment dated 20 September 2016.

Despite the Premier’s recent decision to proceed with forced mergers, five Councillors voted to continue the appeal process (Karpin, Palmer, Bennison, Brent and Strassberg), whereas four Councillors voted against (Gold, Hutchens, Brooks-Horn and Cheong).

Council is due in the Supreme Court in early April where it is likely to learn the outcome of its case.

Willoughby to leave Shorelink Library Network Willoughby Council has decided to withdraw from the Shorelink Library Network that has linked the libraries of Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman, North Sydney and Willoughby since 1983.

The Council gave a number of reasons for their intention to withdraw, including that their future needs would be better met with a standalone Library Management System (LMS); that they wanted an increased focus on community hubs and activities other than collection management and lending; and that they no longer supported the Shorelink funding model.

Shorelink has enabled Lane Cove Library to achieve superior service outcomes for the community, with access to more than 840,000 items and the ability to borrow and return from any library in the Network. The online catalogue enables customers to search, reserve and renew items across the member libraries and the excellent interlibrary loans service has fulfilled 87% of requests.

Willoughby Council’s decision to withdraw will impact the way borrowers access library services and may lead to an increase in cost for the remaining four Councils within the Network. It will also see a reduction in the number of items that are available to borrow from 840,000 to 550,000 items.

Illegal dumping costs ratepayers Council will continue its focus on strategies to reduce illegal dumping in and around high-density areas, with research showing that these areas account for 63% of all waste dumping incidents.

Historically, illegal dumping has been concentrated in the Lane Cove North area, particularly Mowbray Road, Gordon Crescent, Mindarie and Murray Street, as well as along Epping Road and Burns Bay Road.

In 2015, Council’s records showed 159 dumps (comprising approximately 200 tonnes of waste) that were collected and disposed of at the community’s expense.

To address this ongoing issue, $210,000 in grant funding was sought from the NSW EPA’s Better Waste and Recycling Fund to employ a Waste Avoidance Project Officer for a period of up to two years and for marketing and promotional materials associated with the project.

In January 2016, Council commenced the Multi-Unit Dwelling Illegal Dumping Project to reduce illegal dumping from multi-unit dwellings in Lane Cove North, particularly as residential unit development is increasing each year in the LGA. The project to date has produced positive results with a 37% reduction in illegal dumping through a combination of promotional and pro-active intervention measures to significantly reduce the dumping in focus areas However, new instances of illegal dumping continue to occur and ongoing intervention is necessary.

The NSW Government recently announced a further $39 million towards the Better Waste and Recycling Fund.

Council is now considering an extension of the project beyond 2017 on the basis of this funding opportunity.

Willoughby’s withdrawal will take effect in December 2017. In order to resolve associated administrative, technical and contractual issues, a bridging Deed of Agreement is required to allow the Shorelink Library Network to operate until June 2018.

At its February meeting, Lane Cove Council resolved to continue to participate in a cooperative Library Network with Manly, Mosman and North Sydney Councils for 2017/18.

It also intends to host a meeting of Mayors and General Managers from the current Shorelink Library Network to see if there are any changes that may encourage Willoughby Council to reconsider its position.

Residential care Planning Proposal opposed by Council At its latest meeting, Council resolved not to support a planning proposal for a residential care facility at 4 -18 Northwood Rd, 274 and 274A Longueville Rd. The proposal sought to amend the current permissible uses in the B1 zone, so as to permit a 130-bed residential care facility and age-related retail uses on the site.

A similar proposal was rejected by Council in 2013 on the grounds of adverse impacts on traffic and parking; visual character and scale; bushfire; retail levels; infrastructure and environment. This decision reflected overwhelming objection by the community (93% of 463 submissions).

Although the latest proposal differs, many of the issues raised continue to apply and Council resolved not to support it for a range of factors.

These included that the proposed bulk and scale was out of proportion with the 1-2-storey context of the area; the proposed street façade was bland and lacked articulation; the traffic impact significantly underestimated the impact of the proposal on roads; necessary intersection design and road modifications were outdated or not addressed; proposed parking was unlikely to cater for staff and visitors, especially on the weekend; and amenity and safety reservations about the location of a residential care facility on such a busy intersection.

Council may consider a development of more modest scale (height; FSR), once the issues raised have been satisfactorily addressed.

100 words After a frantic day and crowded bus the relaxing drink with his mates gave him the needed lift to face an onslaught of kids and pets at home.

Enjoying the pleasant evening air as he strolled through the park, he just had the nagging feeling of having forgotten something – but it quickly faded from his mind as he bumped into a friendly neighbour. A short chat ensued about steamy weather and Trump tweets, and he turned the corner to home. Opening the gate he saw an empty carport – and then it hit him. He had driven to work that morning!

Ahmed sank the bottle into the muddy puddle. Quickly! Others would take advantage of the lull. Brown water splashed as he closed the cap.

He straightened and scrambled to the top of the crater. A pit of broken dreams. The heavy bottle and loose rubble made climbing difficult. A shell exploded nearby showering him with dust. He did not delay to thank his god, but ran doubled, to the jagged row of masonry that offered scant protection. A shattered plank, once his school door, concealed entry to a dark sanctuary. The water would satisfy thirst but not wash away despair.

8.37am Monday. Hordes of zombies emerge from trains and buses, shuffling along the concrete streets.

Lowered heads focus on illuminated squares sucking remaining life force, bobbing along to digital beats feeding into dead brains via skinny white worms slithering from their ears.

Herds move along a city block, green, another block, green. Gradually slowing as their bodies actively reject the destination.

In hundreds of city buildings the glass sliding doors briefly reflect dragging feet, hanging heads and desperate eyes. Into the foyer and a metal box moving up floors. The zombies arrive and the corporate working week has begun.

We have been inundated with responses to our new 100-word story competition, reflective of the number of writers we have within the community. Each month we will publish a selection of these stories. "I am leaving son," said Robert, "It’s time to move on."

"Are you sure, Dad, have you really thought about this?"

Robert hung up. He was engulfed in pain - the physical pain of his tortured body and the mental pain of leaving his family and friends behind.

His mind was still sharp, though, so there was still time - time to plan, time to prepare, time to - what?

Suffer more?

For a moment or two he reflected on his life - no regrets and much to be thankful for. He had achieved most of his dreams, now it was time.

May stood outside the empty, lonely, neglected house. It was not as she remembered it. A development sign had been erected on the fence.

Many occupants had lived in the house during the fifty years since her family moved.

Fearful of disappointment May walked through the overgrown garden to the back door and found it unlocked. Waves of emotion swept through her as she walked to her old bedroom. Inside the closet was her secret. Her parents nor her sister ever knew about it. Nobody else had ever found out either. Inside the compartment were all her treasures still intact.

The old dog pads slowly after his owners. As he passes a neighbour’s garden, perhaps he remembers the joy of the chase when his tabby friend moved nimbly elsewhere as he passed the gate. Perhaps he relives the hours spent with his neck trapped in wrought iron as his friend slipped agilely ahead of him. It was difficult for his owners to extract him, and the little friend has long gone but still the dog looks hopefully down the drive before struggling on. His joints are aching but his eyes are bright and he pushes determinedly on, weariness momentarily forgotten.

Blood clots in the legs are called DVT’s or deep venous thromboses. They occur in the deep set of veins of the leg, as opposed to the surface ones which can become varicose veins. Clots can also develop in arms and other veins within the body.

In the first instance, a clot in a deep leg vein poses a threat of local damage to the vein causing ongoing inflammation and damage to its structure. This is called phlebitis. Phlebitis can lead to permanent blockage, or at least reduced blood flow.

Much more worrisome is the ability for a ‘chunk’ or clot to break off, reach the right side of the heart and move on to the lungs. This is a very serious and lifethreatening condition called pulmonary embolism, or PE. DVT’s in folks with openings between the right and left side of their hearts can have the clot travel via the artery system to the brain as a stroke.

Very nasty.

What will I notice when a DVT develops?

DVT’s can be silent and without symptoms. More likely there is pain in the calf and sometimes up into the inner thigh. Swelling of the leg is common and the area is usually warm, reddened and tender. Classically the pain is worse on stretching the foot upwards - Homans sign.

What are the symptoms of a Pulmonary Embolism?

There may be lung-related chest and pleuritic pain, which is caused when the inflamed lung lining and chest wall lining rub against each other when breathing. A sudden shortness of breath, sometimes quite subtle, is usually present. A persistent and deep cough, sometimes accompanied by bloodstained sputum, may also occur but it’s all a matter of the size and site of the clot. A small clot to the lungs may have no symptoms at all.

Who is most at risk of a DVT? Quite a list as it turns out!

Smoking and obesity are on the list, as is being older than 60 years of age. Those with a history of DVT are more likely to have them recur. Genetic defects of the clotting cascade, particularly of Factor V, will predispose a person to DVT this is called Factor V Leiden.

Inflammatory changes after vein injury or surgery, especially of the knee and hip, are definite factors.

Pregnancy, with its slowing of vein blood return, together with the six weeks following birth are significant precursors. Cancer increases overall risk and occasionally a cancer is heralded by a DVT. The Pill, especially the

combined Pill with oestrogen, increases blood platelet stickiness whereas progesterone causes sluggishness of blood flow and pooling of vein blood. Some sources quote an increased risk of 2 to 6 times for combined Pill takers.

How do I prevent a DVT? Travel, especially long hours of cramped plane or car travel, is a risk.

Those who have had a DVT use a daily injection called Clexane prior to, during and after travel. Blood pooling in the lower legs can be relieved by getting up or out regularly to stretch and walk about. Use the furthest away toilet on the plane!

Firm, below the knee stockings such as TED’s or Scholl Flightsox will help combat blood buildup. Foot exercises while sitting are also good a good idea.

Keeping up your water intake while lowering your grog intake helps against dehydration, as alcohol pulls water out of your system. The role of aspirin is uncertain.

I think I might have a DVT – what should I do?

See your doctor or hospital ASAP. Apart from clinical suspicion, an ultrasound of the leg veins will show up a clot.

A blood test called D-dimer measures for chemicals from the clot. The definitive test for pulmonary embolism is a scan called a VQ scan.

What is the difference between neuropathy and neuralgia?

Neuropathy is the medical term for damage to the nerves, while neuralgia refers to the resulting nerve pain. The pain is usually described as burning, painful, cold, extreme sensitivity, or as electric shocks. It may be associated with muscle spasm, pins and needles, numbness or itching.

• Pressure on the nerve caused by a blood vessel, broken bones, slipped vertebral discs or certain tumours.

One theory goes that orthodontic problems originated with the advent of farming over 10,000 years ago. Before this time, humans did not enjoy soft, processed diets, instead giving their jaw heavy exercise through chewing tough and fibrous food. This constant and heavy muscle action was enough to cause the bones of the jaw and face to expand and accommodate all of the teeth comfortably and without crowding.

There can be any combination of upper jaw or lower jaw issues including that they are either too large or too small, teeth are too big for the space they need to fit in, or that there are angulation problems with the teeth.

The collective term for a jaw that shows these kinds of issues is malocclusion, which quite literally means a ‘bad bite’.

Pain-relieving medications: Neuralgia does not generally respond well to common pain medications. Specific medications are available on prescription from your doctor and are very effective at treating neuralgia. They include antidepressants, which reduce the pain messages to the brain, and anti-epileptics, which prevent nerve cells from firing too quickly.

Vitamins B12, B6, B1 and folate: These B vitamins play a central role in the maintenance of the protective sheath around the nerve cells, allowing the nerves to transmit messages. Thus they improve nerve conduction and promote regeneration of injured nerves. They have been shown to help in the treatment of neuralgia,

completely to do with how the teeth look, but also how they meet and function in harmony. Proper orthodontic treatment can align the teeth within the jaws and against each other to improve their function.

In the case of nasal breathing problems, after treating the underlying cause such as allergies or large tonsils and adenoids, orthodontic treatment that expands the palate back to a normal width will usually improve nasal breathing.

Teeth that line up properly within jaws that are expanded back to their proper size allow everything else to function more normally. Orthodontic treatment also improves the cosmetic appearance of facial structure and smiles, which is what most people think about when having treatment.

A 12-month study found a 40% improvement in patients taking ALC compared to only 24% of those on placebo.

Tumeric: Oxidative stress and inflammation play a role in neuropathy, so the curcuminoids found in turmeric may be helpful due to their anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory properties.

Capsaicin cream: Works by increasing the release of a chemical that transmits pain messages, thus sensitivity is increased initially and then decreased significantly once this chemical has been depleted.

Public exhibition for draft District Plan closes at end of March The draft District Plan for Greater Sydney’s North District, which includes the local government areas of Lane Cove, Hunters Hill, Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Northern Beaches, Mosman, North Sydney, Ryde and Willoughby, is on public exhibition until the end of March.

Developed by the Greater Sydney Commission, the draft Plan sets a vision for growth and development in the North District over the next 20 years and forms the overarching strategy for future planning in the area.

The Plan projects that Lane Cove will increase in population by another 14,900 in the 20-year period from 2016 – 2036. In this time, the entire North District is predicted to grow by 196,350 people to around 1.083 million. The largest proportional growth will be in the over 85s, which is expected to almost double. The number of people over 65 will account for almost 40% of all the North District’s growth. There will also be a 20% growth in school-aged children, 14 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 260 I MARCH 2017

increasing demand for school enrolments.

Based on the Department of Planning and Environment’s projections of population and household growth in the North District for the next five years, there is a need for an additional 25,900 dwellings in the area. The housing supply targets for Lane Cove is another 1900 dwellings in the five-year period between 2016 to 2021.

To increase housing capacity, Lane Cove Council is expected to monitor and support the delivery of this housing target recognising significant growth in the precinct adjacent to St Leonards; progress the priority precinct investigations at St Leonards/Crows Nest with Department of Planning and Environment; work with the Commission and Transport for NSW to identify urban renewal opportunities that connect to Sydney Metro; and investigate local opportunities to address demand and diversity in and around local centres and infill areas.

The Plan also discusses delivering a city-wide ‘Green Grid’, which recognises

the way people use open space. Lane Cove National Park and Lane Cove River were identified as a priority project, by enhancing open spaces along the Lane Cove River foreshore to create unique recreational experiences linking the Lane Cove National Park to Macquarie Park, Macquarie University, Chatswood and Epping.

The draft Plan also identifies St Leonards as a health and education super precinct, with opportunities to define the centre’s commercial identity through the integration of health and education assets and the provision of complementary health and medical research activities; private hospitals; allied health; ancillary retail; visitor, carer and aged accommodation.

A lesson in networking At a recent marketing seminar, I was feeling the usual vague awareness that I should go and start a conversation with someone I didn’t know.

Network, in other words. By Liz Foster My client agreed but said she was no good at such things, and how did you go about doing it anyway?

“Easy!” I replied. “Start with something we all have in common, like the weather or holidays. Make it non-threatening and inclusive and people instantly let their guard down. Or go up to someone we just saw speak and flatter them a bit. The trick is to talk about them and not yourself.”

We both stared at each other. She at me, as though I had become the guru in all things schmooze. Me at her, in amazement of what had come out of my mouth. You see, if there’s one thing I can’t abide, it’s the concept of business networking. So how was I able to confidently trot out a plan without a moment’s thought?

The thing is, there are often people standing around who don’t know anyone else. They often appreciate you making the first move. Which makes it much more like a friendly chat really.

Words like ‘networking’ and ‘PR’ have always conjured up images of greasy corporate types (a la Gordon Gecko), or sexy overly made up women teetering about in killer heels. Neither of which I am, of course.

I often find myself at events that talk to marketers, from marketers and about marketing, but full of people too reticent to

strike up a conversation. For such an egocentric industry, we can be a shy lot.

Brands are just the same as people of course, each with their own distinct personalities. A few spring to mind: • Samsung – Malcolm Turnbull. Initial soaring popularity, cut down at peak by a product recall.

• Apple – Madonna. An early daggy brand with a steady core of support, it’s the master in reinvention.

• Bridgestone – Bert Newton. Dependable. Reliable. Been around forever.

• Telstra – Donald Trump. Exclusive, all-powerful, petulant, over promises without working out the finer detail.

• Nescafe – Nicole Kidman. Mass mainstream global appeal, but quite polarising. Can be dressed several different ways.

School children and backpacks With the beginning of the school year, parents often get concerned about the weight of children’s school backpacks and whether they are damaging their child’s backs. Over time backpacks have changed and many have compartments allowing heavy items to be close to the spine. Putting the heavy books close to the spine reduces the drag of the backpack.

It is generally recommended children carry a maximum of 10% of their body weight in their bags. This can be challenging and often requires a degree of organisation, rather than carrying unnecessary books.

Despite these guidelines, there is never a guarantee that exceeding this load will cause problems or that keeping loads down will prevent pain. One of the best ways to prevent pain is to have strong muscles. A recent study showed only 6% of Australian children aged 15-17 meet the national guidelines of 60 minutes of exercise every day. With reduced exercise comes increased sitting time and reduced muscle strength. This behavior is a risk for developing musculoskeletal pain either now or in the future.

Sign up for LCFC’s 2017 season Lane Cove FC returns to the national knockout FFA Cup in March, hoping to progress beyond the first round where sadly the run came to an end in 2016.

With the draw happening at the end of February, the Club is hopeful that it will be played at home to bring a large crowd to Blackman Park.

We've moved!

Well we finally moved into our new office on Friday 24th February. We had a few hiccups but we still managed to get the meals and the nursing services delivered efficiently, thanks to our wonderful volunteers and nurses respectively. Our BOOMers (Bus Outings for Older Men) even got to go to Church Point for a lovely look around and morning tea.

We’re busy unpacking boxes and finding places to put everything.

When we’ve got ourselves more settled, we’d love to invite you to pop in and have a look at the beautiful new office built specially for us by Lane Cove Council. Trent Zimmerman MP secured us $20, 000 for new furniture so we look very smart.

In March we have a huge range of new events for Seniors Festival.

Come in and try something different, whether it be African drumming, mindfulness meditation, Bollywood dancing – see page 33 for a full list of what’s on offer.

On 14th February Anthony Roberts MP stood up to pay tribute to us in NSW Parliament. We are all very proud to be recognised in such a way.

Today I pay tribute to an incredible organisation that deserves recognition within my electorate and beyond.

When I refer to Lane Cove & North Side Community Services, I think of a community group that is both compassionate and well respected. This voluntary organisation is devoted to the welfare needs of its local community.

This work was pioneered by the residents of Lane Cove in 1961 and I am proud that many other communities now replicate it.

The work of LCNSCS is broad ranging.

Services include home nursing, meals on wheels, home maintenance and modification, welfare information and advocacy, community transport, social activities, social support, a linen service, a shopping service, easy care gardening and in-home podiatry.

I repeat that this work is carried out by volunteers from our community.

There are more than 300 dedicated and compassionate volunteers. These community angels provide services including providing support and information to young and old disabled members of the Lane Cove community.

This incredible band of volunteers visits isolated people and at times can be the only point of contact for lonely people in Valued at $195 their day-to-day lives.

Of course such a large volunteer ship needs a rudder. The team is captained, championed and at times counselled by John Devine, who is ably assisted by Gillian Batt. John Devine is President of Lane Cove & North Side Community Services

whilst Gillian Batt competently carries out the duties of General Manager. The Mayor of Lane Cove, Deborah Hutchens, also proudly serves on the Board. To be honest, there are times when deserving people fall through the cracks of Federal, State or local governance.

It is on those occasions that volunteers from the LCNSCS step in. They step in with no fanfare and no press releases; they just do what is needed and they open the necessary doors. These people are the glue that makes a community, like mine, complete. Who knows, one day any one of us in this Chamber might be the beneficiaries of the compassion, help or guidance that this group - and other similar groups - provide so selflessly.

Fifty-six years is a long time to be showing compassion for one's community and these volunteers show no sign of slowing down or reducing their service. The slogan, ‘We care for you’, so aptly describes these dedicated humanitarians. We care that they do care. A grateful community praises these volunteers who are only too willing to give of their time and expertise - caring, devoted volunteers who are prepared to help those who, for various reasons, cannot always help themselves. I am not saying that we should give them three cheers only because this is not the appropriate forum in which to do so. But three cheers would seem inadequate for this group. On behalf of the Lane Cove community - in fact, on behalf of the broader community - I say thank you to them.

Go 'round There’s something very satisfying about a round trip. Finish back at the same place you started but travel AROUND and then you can use that wonderfully esoteric word ‘circumnavigate’.

We’re also noticing an increase in demand for cruises around Iceland.

I’m still waiting for a complete circumnavigation cruise of Japan, the hit destination of 2017 so far. For now we have to be content with ships that explore the bottom two thirds, including the lovely Inland Sea, and bookend those voyages with pre- and post-cruising stays in the cultural icon that is Kyoto, or mesmerizing Tokyo. However, I’m hopeful that an exploration vessel will one day offer a more complete journey incorporating the rugged north, the southern volcanoes and everything in between.

For utter relaxation, you can’t beat two catch-all island cruises for comfort and comprehensiveness. In Tahiti, the Paul Gauguin has been joined by Windstar and both now ply their vessels on a regular route around the Tuamotus, and occasionally taking in the more distant Marquesas.

Further north, Hawaii is a firm favourite with Trendsetter clients and many are now enjoying a cruise on the Pride of America that allows them to pack one and explore the four main islands.

Rethinking childbirth education Dr Kate Levett firmly believes that a radical review of antenatal education is required so that parents have the tools and positive attitudes needed to manage labour and birth. The findings of her PhD research on the topic have received international attention, recently published in the British Medical Journal Open and the Journal of Midwifery.

The area of integrative medicine and how it complements mainstream medicine is an area that Kate has been interested in for many years. But it was her own personal experiences following the birth of her three children that led her to undertake PhD research into understanding the benefits of natural birthing education.

“Following the medical complications that I had with delivery of my second child, the need arose for me to look at the alternatives that were available to help manage the labour for my third child.”

In what she describes as a real ‘awakening’, Kate’s third labour was radically different through implementing natural pain management techniques.

“I came away wondering why women weren’t being taught this – antenatal classes tell you about the drugs that are available for pain management, but not the alternatives.”

Kate, who lives in Lane Cove, completed her PhD research at Western Sydney University’s National Institute for Complementary Medicine (NICM) last year. She is now a Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame’s School of Medicine; an Adjunct Fellow at NICM, Western Sydney University; and also operates her own private acupuncture practice in St Leonards.

Already with a degree in Education; an Advanced Diploma in Applied Science (Acupuncture); and a Masters Degree in Public Health (Epidemiology); Kate’s latest PhD research tested whether childbirth education programs can help reduce unnecessary interventions in labour.

“High rates of medical interventions during childbirth are problematic as they can spark a ‘cascade of interventions’, where the first intervention in labour leads to subsequent procedures to manage side effects” says Kate. “Research shows these interventions, which commonly begin with epidural analgesia, often result in instrumental birth or caesarean section.”

For the study, Kate and a team of researchers conducted a randomised controlled trial of 176 women having their first baby across two Sydney hospitals.

“We developed a childbirth education course where expecting mothers and a birth partner attended a weekend workshop. They were provided with therapies such as acupressure, yoga, relaxation, visualisation and breathing techniques.

“In addition, we incorporated an education session informing women and their partners about the benefits of natural birth, and how their hormones could be utilised or enhanced to cope with labour pain.”

Kate says that the results were stark.

“We found the women in the study group had a significant reduction in epidural rates and caesarean section compared with women in the control group, and with reduced fear of childbirth. Their babies were also less likely to be resuscitated at birth.”

The research found women in the study group who gave birth: ● Had a significant reduction in epidural rates compared with women in the control group (23.9% vs 68.7%) ● Had a reduced caesarean section rate (32.5% vs 18.2%). ● Were significantly less likely to require their labour to be accelerated using artificial means (28.4% vs 57.8%) or have perineal trauma (84.7% vs 96.4%) ● Had a shorter second stage of labour (mean difference of 32 minutes) ● Babies in the study group were also less likely to require resuscitation at birth (13.6% vs 28.9%).

Interviews conducted with women and partners found the participants really loved the course because it

gave them tools with which to manage the pain of labour, and strategies to avoid unnecessary interventions.

Based on the results of the study, Kate believes that there needs to be a radical rethink of antenatal education in Australia.

“Childbirth classes became a routine part of antenatal care in Australia during the 1970s and 80s, but by the 1990s, focus had shifted from natural childbirth preparation to hospital birth preparation,” says Kate.

“As a result, education classes nowadays concentrate on providing information about medical interventions, such as induction of labour and caesarean sections, and the various options for pharmacological pain relief during labour.”

Armed with the findings of the new research, Kate is now presenting at international forums and hospital information sessions to educate obstetricians, midwives and health professionals about the importance of birth preparation education.

“It is important that women understand the alternatives that are available to manage their labour. Medicine then becomes the backup, not the only way to manage labour”.

Dr Kate Levett has a private acupuncture practice at Restore Health and Wellness Clinic in St Leonards. With a particular interest in women’s health, including adolescent hormonal changes, fertility and IVF, pregnancy and menopause, Kate also offers birth preparation and education in the last four weeks of pregnancy, providing techniques to assist women towards a natural birth.

Vestibular Disease in Dogs What is vestibular disease?

Vestibular disease affects the cranial nerves responsible for balance and orientation in space. It is a very common presentation in old dogs and as a result, is often referred to as geriatric vestibular disease.

Owners often present their dog as an emergency, mistakenly thinking they have had a stroke as the dog usually comes in either leaning to or lying on one side unable to get up. While the signs are extremely disturbing to an owner, the disease looks a lot worse than it is and many dogs make a complete recovery. A stroke is a vascular accident in the brain and while this can cause vestibular disease, it is a rare cause in dogs.

SIGNS OF VESTIBULAR DISEASE: ● Disorientation ● Head tilt or falling towards one side ● Nystagmus (rapid eye movement) ● Rolling on the ground (in severe cases) ● Motion sickness (vomiting and nausea)

Can a dog recover?

A dog’s recovery depends on whether there is a central (brain) problem, a middle ear infection, or if the cause is idiopathic (unknown). In most cases, the cause is idiopathic in old dogs, which carries a good prognosis.

Middle ear infections can also cause vestibular disease as the vestibulocochlear nerve runs through the middle ear and if there is an infection present, balance can be affected.

What testing is required?

The prognosis is extremely variable for the different causes of vestibular disease. Several important tests should be carried out:

Is there any treatment available?

It is a good idea to provide the dog with some antinausea medication to reduce the incidence of vomiting and improve their wellbeing. Sometimes sedation and hospitalisation is required if your dog is distressed and anxious due to the sudden onset of signs.

While most cases of

vestibular disease are idiopathic (no known cause) and have a good prognosis, the nursing care involved can be quite extensive, particularly if your dog cannot walk or eat by itself due to lack of coordination.

Cases must be assessed individually with respect to several factors: • Mobility issues (is the dog able to go to the toilet?)

• Level of distress (is the dog really stressed as a result of the disorientation?)

• Feeding issues (some need hand-feeding) • Ability of the owner to provide nursing care at home • Concurrent problems such as arthritis, obesity, blindness which may affect speed of recovery.

Some cases of vestibular disease are very mild and improve in 24-48 hrs, whereas other more severe cases can take several weeks to stabilise. Every case is different and management needs to take the individual dog and owner’s situation into account.

Rotary raises money for Nusa Tengarra The Rotary Club of Lane Cove enjoys some fun experiences and nothing makes them happier than raising money for a fabulous cause. In February they were excited to join with other Rotary Clubs for an evening of song and dance and Indonesian food to raise money for the Nusa Tengarra project. The proceeds - $6000 will be used to fund wells, micro-projects, school resourcing and a whole lot more for our still desperately poor neighbours in Indonesia.

Mum’s special paté INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

500gm chicken livers (soaked in salted water) 125gm butter 1 large onion 2 cloves garlic, chopped finely 1 bayleaf 6 rashers bacon, chopped 3 tbsp port 4 tbsp apple brandy ½ cup Baileys 125gm mushrooms, finely chopped Salt & pepper to taste

Heat butter in pan and add chopped onion, garlic, bayleaf and bacon. Cook until lightly sautéed. Add cleaned and washed livers and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Blend cooked mixture and butter from pan. Add brandy, port, Baileys, mushrooms, salt and pepper to pan. Stir, bring to boil and simmer uncovered until sauce has reduced by half. Pour sauce into blender and mix both together until smooth. (If you would prefer a smoother consistency, push through a sieve.)

Refrigerate.

“When my mother was young, her father owned a chicken farm in England. They grew up plucking feathers and using the chickens for all types of dishes.

“I remember when I was young that we would have Mum’s special chicken liver paté at very special family do’s. It was a staple at special events.

“I remember the first time I ate the paté was at Christmas with all the family. I also remember sitting down at our old barbecue table out the back – an old steel-framed one with fencing palings on the top – and we ate the paté with chopped carrots.

“Now I’ve taken up the reins and my friends, who all eat it, are extremely impressed. I have added my own touches - for example, I use Baileys and I am generous with the onion and garlic – lots of garlic is good!”

2-3 cloves garlic 2.5cm square ginger, crushed 1 green chilli, finely chopped 2 tsp curry powder 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sugar 2 tsp peanut butter (can omit if allergic)

METHOD

Mix marinade ingredients in a bowl, then add beef (or other meat). Allow to marinate for a couple of hours. About an hour before cooking, soak bamboo skewers in water to prevent them burning. Thread 5 to 6 pieces of meat on each bamboo skewer, then BBQ or pan fry until cooked, about 3 minutes each side. Delicious served with your favourite home-made satay sauce and steamed or fried rice.

“My mum's a great cook. I can't actually remember the first time I experienced this dish – it's something that's been served at BBQs and family gatherings ever since I was a young child.

“My memories of this dish mostly revolve around large family gatherings during our extended Christmas holidays in Darwin. Everyone would bring their favourite Darwin delicacy, such as chicken vermicelli, curried magpie goose, freshly caught barramundi and steamed white rice, which would be served buffet style on a long table.

“The beauty of this dish is that everyone has their own version of it, according to their personal preferences. I like to add a little extra chilli as well as a little ground cumin and coriander for extra spice. You can also change up the meat you use – it's equally delicious made with chicken.

“There is scope to add fresh herbs to the marinade. And it's lovely served with a fresh cucumber salad.”

The smack… is it legal?

Parenting is difficult at the best of times. The challenges often increase following a separation or divorce. Parents must often adjust to parenting alone, in circumstances where there is some anger and mistrust.

Problems often arise as to physically disciplining children. Can or should you smack your children when they do the wrong thing?

Many parents grew up in cultures, or at times, when physical punishment was commonplace and even encouraged.

But times have changed. In New South Wales, corporal punishment was banned in public schools in the 1990s. The Family Courts can if requested (and routinely do) make orders prohibiting either party from physically disciplining their children.

There is no actual legal prohibition or offence of striking a child. But if it is considered an assault, then parents may be liable for criminal charges if the police are involved.

Under the Crimes Act (specifically under section 61AA entitled ‘Defence of lawful correction’), a charge of

assault can be defended if a parent uses physical force on their own child (not on someone else’s) and the physical force is reasonable, having regard to the child’s age, health and maturity. But the physical force is not considered reasonable if it was applied to any part of the head or neck of the child, or if it causes harm that lasts more than a short period, such as force causing bruising.

Some years ago, I heard of a case in which a father was charged with assaulting his 15-year-old daughter. The father loved his child dearly but was struggling to cope following a separation and was having difficulty dealing with anger and mistrust from his former partner. Father and daughter argued, the father lost his temper and clipped the daughter over the head with his open hand a little harder than he intended.

The daughter called the police and her father was charged with assault. In the end, he pleaded guilty in court to a charge of assault. The mother then cut off all contact between the children and their father. But the mother was left in charge with an out-of-control teenager, who now felt empowered to be rude and disobedient to whoever she pleased.

It is never acceptable to hit children out of anger or frustration or in a way that could be considered cruel or inappropriate.

In circumstances of family breakdown, parents hopefully can learn to cooperate and support each other on issues of consistent, appropriate discipline. If not, they run the risk of having accusations made against them that create complications and can damage their children’s welfare. For such parents, and probably for all parents, smacking or any physical discipline seems unwise and should be avoided.

Local author releases new book After six years of intensive research, long-time Lane Cove resident Brian Scott has released his new book ‘The Business of the Lane Cove River from 1788’.

Brian has lived in Lane Cove all his life, raising his family and operating his accountancy practice from here.

From a young boy growing up in Centennial Avenue through to now, the river has formed the backdrop of much of Brian’s life. In his book, Brian recounts the story of Lane Cove River’s history in great detail.

“Whereas other historians have written more general accounts of business in Lane Cove, my book focuses on the business activity right along the river including Lane Cove, Hunters Hill, Ryde, Willoughby and Ku-ring-gai. It records history by taking where we are now and looking back.

“This is a story that is meant for future generations - as our community continues to grow, it’s important for people to know about our local history.”

Brian’s book provides a wide-ranging examination into the commercial,

industrial and recreational uses of the river dating back to the beginning of white settlement in 1788. It introduces pivotal figures including pioneer convict landowners, influential industrialists, and enterprising entrepreneurs.

At an event attended by over 90 people, the book was officially launched

by Mayor and Councillor Deborah Hutchens at the Lane Cove Library in February.

“Congratulations to Brian on this excellent book. Lane Cove has such a rich and vibrant history and its benefits flow through to every part of our lives. Brian’s book captures the evolution of industry and the people who have shaped the area through history.”

Increased knowledge has improved techniques for preserving native vegetation and encouraging birdlife. Many people are now aware that small and medium sized birds have disappeared from our back gardens and to encourage them to return, they need lower growing shrubs for protection. The Society has even learned not to attack weeds and exotic species too swiftly so that the protection provided by Lantana, for example, can be maintained until native thickets have been established.

The Society members select the plants for sale very carefully, visiting small nurseries in particular that supply healthy plants and tube stock suitable for Lane Cove garden conditions. One supplier is the Cornucopia Cafe and Nursery at Gladesville, which provides employment for people with mental illness. They propagate seed from native trees, shrubs and groundcovers as well as herbs and vegetables to cook in their cafe kitchen.

Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society began in 1971 in response to the planned extension of the Lane Cove Golf Course into surrounding natural bushland, which would have lost precious native vegetation. Gardening with natives had become increasingly popular and everyone was passionate about indigenous plants.

The need for knowledge was great then, but needed even more now as development puts pressure on Lane Cove’s bushland and green space.

The Society has held a stall, usually twice a year in Spring and Autumn, since 1975. These have raised funds and awareness of the significance of native plants and bushland in urban areas.

A Message from the Mayor of Lane Cove

Councillor Deborah Hutchens Each year I am amazed by how much Council runs during the month of March – fitness initiatives like Walk Around the World; harmony initiatives such as Harmony Day and International Women’s Day; and then there’s the month-long Seniors Festival. I hope that I see you at one or all of these exciting initiatives!

Also taking place this month is Neighbour Day. Here in Lane Cove our familiar ‘village feel’ is underpinned by familiar faces and a sense of belonging in our home, our street, our parks and our Plaza. I am thrilled that Council is helping to bring this feeling to life with its Neighbour Day initiatives – from free catering packs for apartment blocks; to welcome booklets for people from diverse backgrounds; and a free, community-led event in Hughes Park on Sunday 26 March.

Opening of 10,000 Stars Exhibition Last month I had the pleasure to host the opening of the 10,000 stars exhibition at Gallery Lane Cove. This was a fantastic culmination of more than two years of work from Council and the community. The handmade stars are forming part of the 1 Million Stars to End Violence project which will be on display at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Congratulations to the community groups and individuals from Lane Cove who contributed to such an important cause.

Launch of ‘The Business of the Lane Cove River’ Close to 100 people joined us for the launch of Lane Cove local Brian Scott’s book last month. Brian’s book tells the fascinating story of Lane Cove River’s history through the various industries and businesses that were set along this important river system. Congratulations to Brian on his efforts and for contributing to the history of Lane Cove with this fascinating publication. Copies of the book are available at Lane Cove Library for members of the community to borrow.

Seniors Festival - Try Something Different There are more than 50 events this month as part of Lane Cove’s Seniors Festival celebrations. Whether you are looking for something relaxing, exciting, active or intriguing, there is something for everyone!

Council Merger update Premier Berejiklian provided hope that the issue of forced Council mergers would be positively resolved last month, however unfortunately the Premier reaffirmed the Government’s intention to proceed with forced mergers for city councils.

This is a disappointing outcome given the Government’s own admission that this is a one-size-fits-all model. Council has listened to the community over the years of consultation on this matter and have heard the feedback loud and clear from the majority of the Lane Cove community that they do not want to be forced to merge with Hunter’s Hill and Ryde councils. Regrettably this is looking more likely given the Premier’s reinforcement of their intention to proceed with mergers of Sydney councils following the outcome of current court cases.

Council is due in the Supreme Court in early April where it is likely to learn the outcome of its case. The latest information on the progress of the proposed mergers will be updated on Council’s website.

Forced merger update - On 14 February, after a period of speculation as to the future of the Government’s council amalgamation policy, the Premier announced that proposed mergers of councils in Sydney will still proceed following the conclusion of the current legal actions initiated by those affected councils. Only the forced amalgamation of country councils will not proceed.

Sadly and deceptively, this policy was not presented to the people of NSW at the 2015 State election. We now know that the NSW Government had plans at that time, but as they chose not to reveal this, there is no mandate for the forced mergers to proceed.

From the outset, our position has been that the people should have a direct say in how they are governed. The NSW Government has chosen not to listen to communities, and has steamrolled ahead with this flawed and undemocratic process. The Government has chosen to follow the advice of lobby groups, who represent the commercial interests of their members.

Whilst Hunter’s Hill Council is extremely disappointed that the new Premier has missed this opportunity to reengage with communities about forced amalgamation, we are still committed to fighting it through legal process. Our next court hearing is likely to take place in early April.

Lobbyists in Local Government - The Lobbying of Government Officials Act 2011 regulates the registration and lobbying activities of those individuals and organisations who operate for commercial gain to influence government on behalf of their clients. But are you aware that it specifically excludes local government councillors and officials from the definition of a ‘Government Official’ for the purposes of this legislation?

In 2016, I wrote to the former Premier highlighting this massive omission in the legislation. To date, nothing has changed and lobbyists continue to ply their trade throughout the local government sector, with no legislative requirement for registration and public declaration of their activities. It is way overdue for the activities of lobbyists to be regulated to ensure greater transparency.

Seniors Festival March - We would like to invite all seniors to take part in local activities as part of Seniors Festival 2017.

The new Parliamentary year begins - Parliament returned in early February with a busy schedule.

This year our government will continue to focus on creating jobs, work to reduce the cost of living, and repair the budget so that we can afford better healthcare and education.

As a Liberal government, we are determined to foster and reward Australians who work hard, have a go and take a risk. Our policies are focused on enabling each and every Australian to do their best and achieve more without being punished or disadvantaged.

Our policies are making the economy more competitive and jobs more secure as well as enabling small businesses to invest more and hire more. Furthermore, our export trade deals are opening up new markets for Australian goods, creating thousands of new jobs.

Key to our program are policies to support small and medium size businesses, including our Enterprise Tax Plan and improving the environment for small businesses.

Parliamentary Committee work - A large part of the work of MPs is through the Parliament’s committee system.

I am chairing the House of Representatives Health, Aged Care and Sport Committee and we are currently conducting an inquiry into the adequacy of support and research for those suffering from deafness and hearing loss. It’s estimated that 3.5 million Australians experience hearing loss and this number is expected to grow as our population ages.

I am also a member of the Transport, Cities and Infrastructure Committee, which reflects my strong interest in improving transport and the sustainability of our cities. In addition, I am a member of the Parliament’s Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, which provides the opportunity for us to look at how Australia’s international and trade relations can best serve our nation’s future.

2017 Australia Day honours - Congratulations to those local residents whose work was honoured in this year’s Australia Day Honours List. We can be proud that so many people from our own community were recognised for their work.

Saluting Their Service Grants now open - These grants provide funding to eligible organisations for projects that contribute to Australia’s understanding of its wartime heritage and to honour the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. There are two categories: 1. Community Commemorative Grants – up to $4,000 is available for projects that assist people at a community level and enable communities to build memorials and preserve wartime memorabilia that are locally significant.

2. Major Commemorative Grants – in excess of $4,000 is available for significant projects at a national or state level.

As the Premier has made clear, housing affordability is one of our key priorities.

The NSW Government has already taken important steps in addressing this issue and it is my intention, as the recently appointed Minister for Planning and Housing, to follow through by working closely with councils, government agencies, the community and the private sector to deliver housing where it is needed.

We are committed to making housing affordable and addressing the challenge of housing affordability by continuing to increase housing supply.

Housing construction across NSW is booming – 72,445 new homes were approved in 2016, the highest ever approved in a single calendar year.

Under the former Labor Government, from June 2006 to June 2011 Sydney’s population increased by 333,000, almost 67,000 people each year.

Over the same time period, the number of new home completions in Sydney averaged just under 14,000.

So while Sydney’s population was booming, Labor let housing completion numbers stagnate.

The planning system is already being simplified to reduce processing times and costs. This includes increasing the take up of complying development – a fast-tracked development assessment process that allows certain works that meet set standards to be approved without a full development application.

Approvals for complying development are issued within 22 days on average. This compares with development applications taking on average 71 days.

The Planning Portal will also deliver online lodgement and assessment for development applications which will reduce approval times.

The Government is helping to address the challenge of housing affordability by increasing housing supply – delivering more than 50,000 approvals every year.

In the next 20 years, NSW will need at least 900,000 more homes to accommodate population growth and most of these new homes (725,000) will be needed in Sydney.

Housing completions are expected to continue rising during 2017 on the back of the strong pipeline of work underway.

The latest data shows that 78,400 new homes were under construction in September 2016. This is 90 per cent higher than at any time in the State’s recorded history (data goes back to 1984).

Higher house prices have been driven by rising land values as demand has increased. This has particularly been the case in Sydney.

In response the Government is releasing and rezoning more land than ever before to create new communities.

We know more must be done and as Housing Minister, I am considering and discussing ways to improve the situation for NSW home-seekers.

Let me assure you that the whole of Government is deeply committed to making life easier for homebuyers.

Pamela will be using experimental watercolour techniques and inspiring other artists to work from a still life with freedom and abandon. Pam has taught many of Lane Cove’s artists from her studio in Woodford Bay. A past president of the Society, she is the winner of numerous awards, including the Aspects of Lane Cove Award 2016. She has recently taken a number of guided artist tours to various Australian and overseas destinations.

Next on the list is a tour to Portugal in 2018.

Pam’s presentation will commence following the Art Society’s brief AGM at 8pm. The meeting will be held in the downstairs premises of the Lane Cove Community Centre, 166 Longueville Rd. Entry is free and all who have an interest in art, in any shape or form, are most welcome.

Through digital media works, refugee and asylum seeker artists from Sydney share their stories of families fleeing war and their settlement in Australia. A series of paintings from a recent immigrant living and studying locally, navigates ideas of cross-cultural identities. Together these works assert the beautiful and fundamental rights of every human being to freedom and peace.

This exhibition will create a place for sharing stories and we invite all people to participate in this culturally rich and diverse exploration of humanity.

Opening night is 6pm on 8th March and will include keynote speakers Noel Zihabamwe, winner of the NSW Premiers Young People’s History Prize 2016 for One Thousand Hills, and Guido Gonzalez, Creative Leader of CuriousWorks, a not-for-profit that empowers marginalised communities to tell their stories through digital media. There will also be a special poetry performance by a young emerging artist.

This is an opportunity for Lane Cove to experience other cultures and to welcome people with diverse backgrounds.

The gallery has invited artists who have created visual stories through CuriousWorks, who operate and often exhibit at Casula Powerhouse Museum.

“We are supporting young people to develop their art practice and provide an audience to experience these creative works. We have not shown a lot of digital artwork in the gallery. As video, photography and sound increases in popularity with young people, we thought it important for us to show these sensitive and compelling stories,” said the galleries’ manager and curator, Felicity Martin.

Alongside these digital works will be the beautiful mixed media paintings by Farina Salehi, a local artist who fuses traditional textiles of Shiraz with Western notions of abstraction.

The gallery is also creating an exciting public program for Saturday 11th March that is free to the public. Young artists will be sharing their stories for an upcoming exhibition Beyond Refugees, that will be held at Casula Powerhouse later in the year.

The Translating Displacement exhibition runs until 25th March at Gallery Lane Cove, Upper Level 164 Longueville Road, Lane Cove.

The Wiz is based on the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, when it was first performed on Broadway in 1975.

The original musical had an all-black cast and this may possibly be the reason that it has not often been performed outside the US. The film adaptation starred Michael Jackson and Dianna Ross, with the score re-orchestrated by the music genius, Quincy Jones.

Riverview has based their production on the NBC Live version of this musical which was aired in the US in December 2015 to rave reviews – with many reviewers claiming it to be the best live musical ever aired on television.

The school’s new polo shirts are 100% organic cotton and completely ethically sourced, even down to the bags they are supplied in.

The polo shirts were sourced from rrepp, a Northern Beaches based business. Founding Director Scott Goddard says that there is around 10,000 schools throughout Australia representing nearly 4 million students. Most have a polo shirt as part of their student uniform.

“Conventional school uniform polos are often made in China, with pesticide grown cotton sometimes mixed with plastic polyesters. They can be poor quality and may use cheap, questionable labour practices,” says Scott.

“The difference with rrepp polos is that they are made in India from healthy 100% certified environmentally conscious organic cotton . They are exceptional quality and are independently Fairtrade Certified (no child labour).”

Scott said that LCWPS is part of a wonderful localised social justice initiative that includes students, teachers, parents and their local communities.

“With students now wearing organic and Fairtrade polos, they have become part of a far greater social statement by recognising and speaking up for those who are rarely given a voice.”

The HSC journey Beth Hopkins, 2016 HSC ‘All Rounder’ at Hunters Hill High School, offers advice for current and future Year 12 students.

Looking back on it now, the HSC was hardly the gruelling, neverending torture it’s talked up to be. Although it’s undoubtedly a stressful journey, the memories you make along the way and the deep sense of accomplishment when it’s all over make up for the less than enjoyable aspects.

The subjects I did in my HSC were Advanced English, General Mathematics, Biology, PDH/PE and Legal Studies. I made the decision to complete the minimum of 10 units, as I felt that I would benefit from dedicating as much time as possible to the least number of subjects possible.

At the beginning, I remember wanting to be as organised and prepared as possible. I had colour-coordinated folders for each subject; an abundance of post-it notes and highlighters; weekly planners, and more pens than one person should ever need. I would also spend an unnecessary amount of time watching ATAR reaction videos on YouTube as a source of motivation. Did they help?

Probably not, but they sure were a fun way to trick myself into thinking I was studying!

For me, the most challenging part of the HSC was the trial exams. These were our first three-hour-long exams, and they definitely put our dedication and focus to the test. It’s certainly true when people say that the trial exams are harder than the actual HSC exams. Having to complete replicas of the HSC exams in a crammed, stressful two-week period without the month-long study break you get before final exams was a struggle.

However, the trial exams were the best way to prepare us, and allowed room for mistakes that could have caused a lot of grief in the final exams.

Towards the end of the year, knowing that the HSC exams were approaching and closer than ever was a daunting feeling. At times, it was a challenge to

maintain motivation and to continue dedicating time and effort to schoolwork.

I found that I could use the stress I was experiencing to my advantage. It motivated me to work hard, study, and achieve my goals.

However, I always took the time to keep my stress at a manageable level and make sure the pressure didn’t get to me. Down time was just as important as study time. I would reward myself every time after I finished a difficult essay, assessment or study block by settling down on the couch with a bar of chocolate to watch a movie. This routine gave me something to work for and helped me to remain calm and relaxed.

This kept me going until the exam period was finally over.

Checking my results was a strange experience for me, as I’d literally just landed back in Sydney after a trip to South Korea. In my dazed, jet-lagged state, I opened that dreaded text message from BOSTES. I only had a moment to glance at my results before a border security officer scolded me for using my phone in the immigration line. Achieving Band 6 in each of my subjects and making the BOSTES All Rounders Achievers List was an amazing feeling. It certainly made all the studying and hard work worth it.

While it’s important to put in the hard yards if you want to achieve your goals in the HSC, I found that it was equally important to spend time with friends and family, and maintain a relaxed approach.

Having a balance between social activities, studying and work allowed me to maintain motivation and avoid overworking myself.

Regular study breaks are important, and I found that walking my dog between study blocks helped keep me sane. It’s also important to find a study technique that works for you, and understand that efficient, consistent study trumps lastminute cramming any day.

The HSC created a sense of closeness among our year group, and I took comfort in knowing that all of us were going through the same thing. I wouldn't have been able to achieve my results without

the support from the school and my teachers. The individualised learning environment of Hunters Hill High School and the partnerships I formed with my teachers in my final year allowed me to work to the best of my ability and feel supported and encouraged through the whole journey.

My advice to all current and future year 12 students: set your own goals, work hard, and enjoy the ride, because it’ll be over before you know it. Despite the inevitable stress, hours of studying, and sleepless nights, Year 12 was one of the best years of my life.
