children’s feet differ from adults, as they are not yet fully formed. did you know?: l A child’s foot will double in size by age 1. l Between the ages of 5 and 12, growth is approximately 9mm per year, with the adult foot size approximated by 12-15 years of age. l Frequent changes in size of socks and shoes are necessary to make room for this growth. Do a size check every 2-4 months up to age 5, then every 6 months from 5 onwards. It is important that shoes are fitted by a children’s shoe specialist. Always have both feet measured for length and width, as most feet differ slightly. The shoe should fit the natural shape of the foot and the toes should move freely and not be squashed by the top or sides of the shoe. Make sure there is 10mm (no more) growing room between the end of the longest toe (not always the big one) and the end of the shoe. It should be comfortable when first tried on with no need to ‘wear them in’. a check-up with a podiatrist is recommended if you notice: l uneven shoe wear l constant trips and falls by the child l hard lumps, blisters or skin rashes l they are complaining about foot / leg pain at lane cove podiatry we cater for all of your family’s foot needs.
