EDITOR'S NOTE We have all observed the metamorphosis over the past six years as apartments pop up all around the Village – 2300 of them, to be exact.

It would appear to be “so far, so good”, with residents we spoke to for this month's feature discussing how they are enjoying the benefits and convenience of apartment living. This is further enhanced by the considerable capital growth they have enjoyed – particularly for those who bought off the plan when the first apartments were listed back in 2011 and 2012.

Demand continues to exceed supply, with thousands of new residents choosing to call Lane Cove home. Turn to page 4 to read the full story.

On a separate topic, as lives become increasingly busy, various services are being developed to help people get some time back in their day.

Home Sweet Apartment Following an unprecedented level of development activity, corresponding increases in property growth have seen purchasers who bought off the plan locally enjoy significant capital growth. By Jocelyn Biddle.

S

ince 2012, just over 2300 new apartments have been completed in Lane Cove, with a further 500 currently in planning stage. This doesn’t include the St Leonard precinct, which has contributed an additional 1500 apartments. Combined, 4377 apartments have been approved in the Lane Cove LGA. This exceeds the initial targets set by the NSW Government’s Draft Metropolitan Plan released in 2013, which required the Lane Cove LGA to increase its housing density by an additional 3900 dwellings before 2031.

This target increased when the Greater Sydney Commission released a draft District Plan in 2016, requiring an additional 1900 dwellings in the Lane Cove LGA over the next five years to work towards accommodating an overall projected population increase of 14,900 people by 2036.

According to Lane Cove Council General Manager Craig Wrightson, Council is already well ahead of growth targets.

“We’ve done a lot of heavy lifting and met initial targets within a short space of time. We’ve now exhausted all key areas for development. The remaining area where Council is planning for growth is the St Leonards South Precinct. We don’t have any further capacity beyond that.”

On this basis, Council has requested that the targets in the latest plan be revised to acknowledge the limited capacity for any additional dwellings.

The development that has taken place since 2012 will ultimately deliver approximately $60 million in revenue through section 94 development contributions paid to Council (based on $13,500 per unit).

Craig confirms that regardless of what happens with potential Council amalgamation, this revenue (which has already largely been allocated) will stay in the area for local projects. Strong capital gain

Loving the lifestyle Randi Lapham bought an apartment off the plan in the Aurora block of units in Finlayson Street in September 2011. With expectations of moving in

by December 2013, this was delayed after the developer declared bankruptcy, leading to significant delays in construction.

Rather than December 2013, the units were not completed until May 2015 - 17 months later than expected.

Two years in, Randi is very happy with her new home and her transition to apartment living from a large house in the Hills District.

Aurora has 56 units in the complex, 20 of which are rented. Residents include a mix of young families, downsizers and single professionals.

“Living here is fantastic.

I don’t know of any suburb that ticks as many boxes as Lane Cove. I’m in easy walking distance to shops and cafes; I can catch the bus into town; if I need to take a cab home from the city it’s affordable; and each time I walk up to the Plaza I’m bound to see someone I know.”

Purchasers into the new apartment developments locally have enjoyed substantial capital gain, with the median value for units in Lane Cove now sitting at $863 thousand (compared to $2.18 million for houses).

‘Aurora’ in Finlayson Street was one of the first sites to be developed back in 2012.

At the time, off the plan sales were from $550 thousand for a 1 bedroom; $830-870 thousand for a 2 bedroom and $1.15-1.5 million for a three bedroom or penthouse.

Alex Banning, Sales Executive with Ray White Lane Cove was a listing agent for this development and says that it pioneered off the plan sales in the village.

“These were considered to be big prices back then.”

The last sale in the block traded twelve months ago, which was a 2-bedroom apartment that sold for $1.1 million, realising an almost 40% increase in four years.

Similar capital gains have been experienced with the ‘Botanic’ apartments in Finlayson Street, which sold off the plan three years ago. Between 2013-2014, 1 bedroom units started from $500 thousand through to a top floor penthouse which achieved $1.65 million.

Recent sales show an average 40% increase. For example, another penthouse that was purchased for $1.357 million in 2014 resold for $1.85 million in 2016, whereas a 1-bedder that was purchased off the plan for $555 thousand in 2014 recently sold for $770 thousand.

Alex says that 80% of apartment buyers already have an association with Lane Cove and really love it here. A large percentage of buyers in the three-bedroom market are locals looking to downsize.

“We’re certainly not experiencing an oversupply with the new apartments that

have been built here. Rather there is a fundamental problem in that there isn’t enough properties to cater to demand.”

Sought after area George Benlian is the Director of Sales & Acquisitions at Hyecorp, which has completed four developments in Lane Cove including Eleeza, Lora, Sevana and Ariana.

Collectively, these developments comprise 392 apartments. In addition, Hyecorp is currently marketing ‘Eva’, a development which will have 104 apartments with construction scheduled to commence in August 2017.

“In 2011 when the first new developments came onto the market in Lane Cove, it wasn’t as well known. The area had all the attributes, so we helped to create demand.

“Lane Cove is now one of the most sought after areas in Sydney for apartment buyers.

It presents good value for money and supply certainly isn’t exceeding demand.”

George says that there has been a 40-60% increase in values across their apartments since 2012, with the larger apartments attracting the strongest growth.

“We are noticing that purchasers have no intention of leaving the suburb - whereas they may have bought a 1-bed apartment initially, they are coming back to upsize to a larger unit to accommodate their changing circumstances.”

Listening to the market Since releasing its first development to market back in 2011, Hyecorp has adapted the design of its developments to cater to changing customer demand.

Moving into the Sevana apartments in Centennial Avenue has been a positive experience for Leila Salehi and her family.

Leila and her husband live in a 2-bedroom unit with their young sons – 3 year old Daniel and 10 month old Davin.

Compared to living in a house, I feel very safe here and it is low maintenance.

Our apartment has a very big balcony where the kids can play and there’s plenty of families around.”

Leila says that they also appreciate the facilities within the development, including indoor gym, movie theatre and swimming pool.

Sevana, completed by Hyecorp, is one of the larger developments in Lane Cove, with 213 apartments. According to George Benlian, the ability to spread the running costs of extra services becomes more reasonable when there is 100 plus apartments within a development.

Indicative of these increasing prices was a record off the plan price of $3.15 million that was recently achieved for a 3-bedroom penthouse apartment within Hyecorp’s new Eva development.

After working in Hong Kong for a couple of years, the purchaser was keen to find an apartment in Sydney that provided easy access to the city, shops and cafes.

After 12 months of searching, the purchaser successfully bid at auction, securing the property for $810 thousand.

“Ideally, I would have liked a 2 bedder, but I had to compromise as prices became too high. In the end, I had to go above today’s market value to secure my property, but for me it’s a long-term hold.”

Jon says that there should be a requirement for developers to retain the original architect through to completion to prevent shortcuts during the building process that can often compromise the final result.

“Changes that are made during construction as developers seek to maximise profits can compromise the design outcome.

“Lane Cove Council established a base standard through design guidelines and a Development Control Plan. However, it has been relatively easy for developers to get through loopholes that have impacted on the quality of some of the developments completed locally.”

To avoid this situation, Jon says that the appointment of a design review panel can assist, and any late changes should be approved by the panel to maintain the integrity of the building.

Consultation process helps shape new traffic plan

TVO’s Jocelyn Biddle, Mariano Massa and Sharon Curby were recently presented with Pride of Workmanship Awards by the Rotary Club of Lane Cove.

Locals recognised at Pride of Workmanship awards The team at The Village Observer were delighted to be recognised when they each received Pride of Workmanship awards at a recent presentation dinner in May. The Rotary Club of Lane Cove presented Jocelyn, Sharon and Mariano with the awards. Other recipients included local caterer Bernadette Kennealy (‘Bern the Chef’); Roshni Shar from Gavin Starr Pharmacy, and Jeremy and Jennifer Ryan.

The Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards were first launched in June 1975 to encourage pride in personal performance in the workplace. Its theme is "Do it once - do it well."

Keynote speaker at the awards dinner was Jacky Barker from In the Cove, who spoke about the importance of community and the benefits of supporting local business.

Council has reviewed responses from a community consultation process designed to gauge resident opinion about redirecting through traffic around the village following the opening of the Rosenthal Avenue carpark.

Unless safety concerns arise during the construction of the Rosenthal development, none of the changes to parking arrangements will be implemented prior to the opening of the new carpark.

This will ensure that existing on street parking capacity is maintained during the construction phase.

The results of the consultation showed that the community is seeking a balance between maintaining on street parking and the streetscapes of the streets affected.

Recommendations include: • The signalisation of Burns Bay Road/ Tambourine Bay Road/ Coxs Lane; • The acquisition of necessary land (61 & 65 Burns Bay Rd) to enable the signalisation of Burns Bay Road/ Tambourine Bay Road/ Coxs Lane to occur; • The closure of Sutherland Street at the Coxs Lane intersection, with a slight adjustment of the cul-de-sac; • Three months after the implementation of parts 1 and 3 above, a survey of traffic flow in Graham Street to determine

if parking should be restricted to one side of the street due to its limited road width; • Installation of indented parking bays and parking restrictions to one side of Coxs Lane between Finlayson and Birdwood Avenue; • Installation of a roundabout on the corner of Finlayson Street and Coxs Lane, subject to an appropriate design; • Parking restrictions on both sides of Coxs Lane between Finlayson Street and Sutherland Street; • Parking restrictions on both sides of Finlayson Street between Rosenthal Avenue and Coxs Lane; • Council to work with the RMS to signalise the intersection of Epping Road/ Coxs Lane to facilitate a right hand turn onto Epping Road; • Possible footpath widening on the southern side of Finlayson Street to accommodate a bicycle/ pedestrian Shared User Path (SUP); • An indented parking bay to be considered for Finlayson St (between Rosenthal Ave and Coxs Lane) to allow very shortterm parking during business hours.

Council is to notify all participants in the consultation, together with affected residents, of these decisions.

Council resolves to continue its fight Lane Cove Council resolved at its last meeting to commence the preparation of a draft application to the High Court regarding its proposed forced merger.

If it loses its current appeal in the Supreme Court and if, in the opinion of its legal Counsel, an application to the High Court to overturn that decision has ‘reasonable prospects’ of success, then Council will seek special leave to appeal to the High Court and to obtain injunctions as necessary to allow the matter to proceed to hearing.

It is still not known when the Supreme Court’s decision will be handed down.

Although Lane Cove, Hunters Hill, Strathfield and Mosman councils are being represented separately, the same legal Counsel 10 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 263 I JUNE 2017

is being used by each of them, enabling legal costs to be split accordingly.

At its May meeting, Council also determined that it would conduct a poll at the Local Government elections scheduled for the 9th September 2017 to ask residents if: a) they want Lane Cove to amalgamate with Hunters Hill and Ryde Councils, and; b) if Lane Cove was to become amalgamated with Hunters Hill and Ryde Councils, would they support the de-amalgamation of Lane Cove if this choice was available to them?

If the poll supports the merger with Hunters Hill and Ryde, Council would then withdraw from any legal action against the merger proposal.

Understanding how children and adolescents experience grief A young person’s ability to understand death depends on their age and cognitive development.

Prior to reaching adulthood, many children will face the loss of a family member, friend or the family pet. Whilst some believe that a child cannot truly grieve until they reach adolescence, others such as British developmental psychologist John Bowlby (best known for ‘Attachment Theory’) suggest that infants as young as six months can experience grief reactions similar to that of adults.

If very young, children may not have an understanding of time, particularly of ‘forever’ or irreversibility, and therefore the reality of the death will be difficult to integrate. Wellmeaning adults sometimes give vague explanations, which can deprive young people of their own best means of managing pain and overcoming the effects of loss.

Young people grieve in doses. They will break grief up into bearable amounts and these can manifest in intense outbursts. In grief, children and teenagers tend to become an exaggerated version of their former selves. If they were very social before, they may become even more so and appear ‘shallow’ to adults who see their social activities as inappropriate. If they were previously shy and withdrawn, this can intensify during grief. A heavy sense of responsibility is also very common.

Normal symptoms of grief in children and adolescents will generally last for around 12 to 18 months, gradually improving over time. These include: ● R egression to bedwetting or thumb sucking ● W hining, crying or clinging to familiar adults

● R educed ability to concentrate ● M ajor changes in eating and/or sleeping patterns ● R oller coaster ride of emotions - highs and lows ● H yperactivity and ‘acting out’, temper tantrums or aggression ● P oor school grades, bad behavior in class Adults can help them adjust to an environment without the deceased by talking openly and truthfully, and letting them express their feelings through things such as art, music, poetry, storytelling, photography or play. A memorial, such as a special garden feature or photo collection, is a good way of relocating the deceased person/animal in the child’s life. It is also helpful to encourage attachment to another caring adult such as a trusted teacher, relative or friend.

Most importantly, offer the time and space for the child to experience the full range of emotions associated with their grief.

If you have experienced the loss too, it is vitally important that you work through your own grief as well as trying to help the child.

We certainly live in interesting times, with so many of our daily processes being driven by computer power. The world of dentistry is no different and most recently we have enjoyed increasing benefits as a result.

I first brought digital x-ray into my practice back in 1998, well before digital photography was a common thing.

Digital x-rays have several benefits over conventional film x-rays, as you can manipulate the images to read the x-rays more accurately. Perhaps the greatest benefit lies in the sensitivity of the sensors compared with film, which means we only use approximately 5% of the radiation exposure to achieve a highquality image compared to film.

What does a Cone Beam CT machine do?

More recently we were amongst the first general dental practices to install a Cone Beam CT (CBCT) machine. This produces digital 3D x-rays of our patient’s

Tobacco smoke contains tars, nicotine and a myriad of contaminants. Chief amongst these are aflatoxins from a mould called Aspergillus, which is known to be responsible for cancer, heart disease, immune compromise and death.

Once the final position is confirmed, the digital file is sent electronically to a laboratory which produces a precision implant placement guide. This allows us to place the implant exactly as planned and because we know where the implant is

If I want to give up, what assistance is available?

You have three choices: nicotine gums; patches; or hypnotherapy. Or a combination of these.

Do patches and gums work?

Patches and gums replace the nicotine from cigarettes and stop your nerves craving it.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a nasty bit of business indeed.

It causes a great deal of distress to its sufferers and is a major cause of disability from lung disease in Australia.

The WHO defines COPD as “a lung disease characterised by a chronic obstruction of the lung airflow that interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible.” The older terms emphysema, chronic bronchitis and some forms of bronchiectasis are now included under the COPD umbrella.

There is a progressive breakdown of the tiny air sacs called alveoli, forming larger, much less efficient areas in the lung for oxygen transfer to the blood.

Oxygen is transferred to tiny arteries in the alveoli wall - stretching these vessels out into a bigger saggy air bag means that oxygen passing over to the blood is reduced. Bronchitis causes inflammation, swelling and narrowing of the airway tubes. This inflammation stimulates mucus production leading to persistent coughing and hoicking up of mucus or sputum.

Q: W hat are the symptoms and signs of COPD?

Those damaged, baggy air sacs in the lungs lead to a reduced efficiency of oxygen making it to the bloodstream. This causes difficulty with breathing and results in breathlessness. Wheezing can also occur as air whistles through the built-

up mucus load. There is also a bloating feeling, as air gets into the lungs more easily than it gets out. This all leads to the cardinal symptom SOB - or shortness of breath, both at rest and on exertion.

There can be any mix and match of a range of symptoms. Look out for chest tightness; constantly clearing mucus from the throat; a chronic, persistent or longstanding cough; lack of energy; sometimes weight loss; swelling of the feet, ankles and legs; and blue tingeing of the lips and fingernails.

‘Pink puffers’ maintain enough oxygen in their system to maintain a florid look about the face.

Q: What causes COPD? Nicotine is incredibly addictive and very hard to shake off. Luckily new products such as ’Champix’ from your doctor can help wean you off the fags. The hot vapours, chemicals and tars in cigarettes are the MAJOR CAUSE OF COPD IN THE WORLD. About 20 – 30% of smokers will develop COPD. Just keep trying if you are a smoker. Your doctor will help you.

There are other irritants including second hand smoke, cigar and pipe smoke, industrial pollution, workplace exposure to dusts, chemicals, smoke and fumes.

In the past, unprotected coal

miners, those cutting stone or sand blasting and of course people working with asbestos were in a risk category.

Maybe you’ve done nothing to deserve COPD. Alpha - 1 - antitrypsin is a chemical produced by the liver to protect the lungs. About 1% of COPD sufferers have a low level of this lung protective protein and go on to develop COPD. It’s genetic and you can be blood tested for it.

Asthmatics who smoke are at much greater risk and this inflammatory disorder is made worse by the irritants in and damage from smoke.

Q: W hen should I be checked out for COPD?

A subtle shortness of breath seems to be creeping up on you? You can’t do the things you used to such as playing tennis? That cough is getting worse and there is more sputum to cough up?

Perhaps you’ve had exposure to cigarette smoke and some of the other irritants mentioned above? Or maybe you worked in one of those risky occupations when you really didn’t think protection was necessary?

Q: W hat tests are done for COPD?

Your doctor will have your heart checked as well as your lungs. Lung function testing will give the final answer.

It’s not all doom and gloom.

With winter sport season upon us, it is common for people to strain/pull their calf or hamstrings during a game or training.

Pointy Pembleton to the rescue!

Local resident Nat Panzarino has written a children’s book to help raise money for rescue greyhounds.

Nat, an English teacher and mother of two, and Fer Wicker, illustrator, have teamed up to bring Pointy Pembleton picture book hero - to life on the pages of a whimsical, beautifully written book with gorgeous watercolour illustrations.

The picture book can be pre-ordered through a new crowdfunding campaign on Chuffed.org. The campaign will fund the production of Pointy Pembleton visits the Dog Park, which is about a gregarious greyhound character who shows children how to accept others that may be a little different.

“Pointy Pembleton teaches children that friendship can sometimes take you by surprise,” says Nat.

“We are two greyhound rescue volunteers who want to use our skills to not only raise funds for dogs in desperate need, but also to raise awareness about greyhounds as family pets. They are wonderful, gentle dogs and make amazing pets,” says Fer. The campaign aims to raise $15,000 to print, market and distribute 2000 copies of the book. 100 words It was the beginning of the school year and the first day for Kindergarten Class. The little ones were starting a week later than the rest of the primary students. Staff were enjoying our morning tea break and anticipating the arrival in the staffroom of the Kindy teachers.

These were the days when not all children attended preschool and many mothers did not work outside the home.

“How did it go?” we asked the Kindy teachers when they finally arrived.

“One little student was very distraught,” they replied. “She was tearfully protesting, 'Every other girl (sob) is wearing MY DRESS!!'”

Every visible part of the man’s body was tattooed. His hair was spikey.

He was riding a seriously big Harley.

I stared at him and he stared back. I felt anxiousness rising inside me only to feel relieved as the traffic lights changed and he sped off down the highway.

I walked into the hospital to visit my friend and there standing beside my friend’s bed was the man on the bike, but now he was in hospital garb. He and I joke about it often remembering those days. He was the best nurse my friend had in the ICU.

The phone rang. My agitated friend spoke: “Thousands of small black insects are crawling up the walls; they’re over everything”. A quick visit revealed no insects - none. Next day a pest exterminator sprayed, sold an exorbitant recurring visits contract and departed.

A museum entomologist remained non-committal, a doctor prescribed an anti-anxiety drug that quickly produced such panic that an ambulance trip to A&E ensued. A psychiatrist made a snap diagnosis of Lewey Body dementia, a decision withdrawn six weeks later.

The insects have become unwelcome guests. The pest control contract has been cancelled and the insects have settled in.

Hunters Hill locals Chris De Baets, Madison Ueland, Harry McIntyre and Emlyn Bilbie have just had the experience of a lifetime!

Enjoy a carefree lifestyle at Lane Cove Gardens

The group enjoyed six weeks of immersion in the French language and culture, staying with a French family and attending a French High School. Highlights of their stay included a segway tour of Paris, a panoramic view from the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, visits to famous museums and a trip to Versailles.

Part of the Hunters Hill – Le Vésinet Student Exchange Program, students from in and around Hunters Hill who are studying French at school can take part in a reciprocal student exchange.

The Australians travel over to Le Vésinet in December and January. In return, French students visit and attend school here for six weeks in June and July.

Over the years, hundreds of students have enjoyed this exchange and the program is run under the auspices of the Hunters Hill Council by a group of volunteers.

It was set up 28 years ago after a friendship pact was signed between the Hunters Hill and Le Vesinet Councils to honour the French origins of Hunters Hill and to promote friendship and cultural understanding between the two towns.

Four local Hunters Hill students had an amazing stay in Le Vésinet in France – a beautiful garden suburb, 30 minutes from the centre of Paris.

When a football (soccer) team is made of up of friends, there can be a large differential in the player’s focus on the game. There will be some kids who play to enjoy the great outdoors, whereas others want to improve their skills and strategies.

Local kids who were serious about improving their skills used to have to travel to one of the larger clubs to join a team of kids who were all focused on improving their football. Three years ago, LCFC and St Michaels FC joined forces to create a Development Squad for kids U8-U13 in the local area. This year, there are 119 boys and girls in 10 teams who train twice a week at Blackman Park in a Development Squad. The kids play in graded teams, so they are playing with other kids of similar abilities.

Soccer KickStart provides the squad with qualified coaches who train their team and coach them at their games. This provides the coaches with a view of both the individual player’s skills and how the team works together. Then the coach can work on the weaknesses at training.

While the focus is on playing good football, there is still time for fun. One of the highlights for the kids is when the coaches and parents combine into teams at one training session, and the kids get to yell out their own coaching!

THE MIX TAPE

A friend of mine recently posted a picture on Facebook of the dashboard of a '66 Valiant.

“I'm in a car with a cassette player,” she wrote.

“Darn. Forgot my cassettes.”

A flurry of comments followed from nostalgic Gen X'ers all pining for an era lost and simpler times. There was the Metallica tape from someone's high school days that got them into metal, and the Pearl Jam tape still kept for such emergency situations. Someone else had just returned from New Zealand where their rental car also had a tape deck.

These days Millennials haven't even heard of cassettes. Even CDs are rapidly becoming obsolete, although at least vinyl is making a comeback. The lapse of the cassette is a shame, because as an angst-filled

teen, there were few things more satisfying than the production of a really good mix tape.

Our family stereo was set up in permanent readiness, a blank tape set simultaneously on PAUSE/RECORD, ready to be leapt upon whenever a favourite track came on the radio. DJs were wise to these tricks and would talk before the end of each song to try and foil scurrilous pirates like myself who were too poor/ cheap to buy the real thing.

As well as mix tapes, my friends and I happily traded albums (or 'LPs' as we called them) to tape and add to our cassette collections. In

the non-disposable society that we lived in, each one was a precious commodity to be preserved, repaired and rewound with the judicious use of sticky tape and a pencil.

Feeling sentimental after my friend's post, I unearthed my original backpacker mix tape and trusty Walkman that travelled with me before landing down under in December 1991. It's called the Brief Street Megamix, named in honour of the dreadful student digs we all had in an undesirable part of London.

I couldn't play it any more but I could do the next best thing - recreate the track listing in my music streaming

account. All the original versions, nothing remastered, in the same order. Within moments I was transported to draughty train stations, hot nights under flimsy canvas, the Aztec pyramids, the New Orleans YMCA, Maui beach and countless other times and places. It was like bumping into an old friend who you loved, and wondering how you possibly could have lost touch.

I can even listen to it again in my car thanks to the wonders of modern technology, although the Bluetooth connection is notoriously dodgy. If only it still had a tape deck in it, I'd be right.

LCNSCS celebrates opening The evening of Thursday 4th of May was a mixture of smoke, jazz, thanks and congratulations. Lane Cove & North Side Community Services (LCNSCS) officially celebrated the opening of our new premises at 1 Pottery Lane, on the ground floor of Lane Cove Community Hub. Over three years in the planning, Lane Cove Council designed, built and fitted out a beautiful new space, giving us a large bright open plan office, three separate meeting rooms and the use of the large Parkview room with its two walls of floor to ceiling windows and views over the outdoor pool and Pottery Green.

Over 150 guests, including councillors, local members, donors, supporters and volunteers gathered for an evening of celebration.

The evening began with Uncle Wes holding a spectacular smoking ceremony in the entrance to the Community Hub. This was followed by Uncle Greg delivering a very moving Welcome to Country, paying respect to the original owners of the land and celebrating the inclusive community we all now enjoy.

There were speeches by Ian Longbottom, Vice President of LCNSCS; Anthony Roberts MP State Member for Lane Cove; Trent Zimmerman MP Federal Member for North Sydney; and Deborah Hutchens, Mayor of Lane Cove Council, who formally declared the centre open. Anthony, Trent and Deborah were also presented with certificates recognising their longstanding support for the organisation. In return, Anthony presented LCNSCS with the Premiers Award containing the citation “In recognition and appreciation of your services towards the welfare needs of the Lane Cove community.”

Other long standing supporters were also recognised including Lane Cove Rotary, Lane Cove Golf Club, URM (United Resource Management) and FOCAS (Friends of Community Aid Services).

The opening coincided with Volunteer week and LCNSCS and all our guests took the opportunity to recognise and thank the volunteers who give their time to help others.

Over 220 people in Lane Cove regularly help and support others in the community with a range of activities.

This includes Meals on Wheels deliveries; taking people to hospital appointments; and helping out on the Shopping Bus so that people can do their shopping at Woolworths, then providing assistance with carrying their bags into their home.

For those unable to leave their homes, a volunteer helps them to do their shopping online from Coles. Other volunteers visit residents in Aged Care Facilities who may not ever have a regular visitor to chat with. The gardening volunteers regularly transform jungles to peaceful havens, and we mustn’t forget the wonderful linen volunteers who change beds and towels and make sure Lane Cove residents have the pleasure that comes with clean sheets.

Last month the linen volunteers were recognised by Lane Cove Council with a Lane Cove Citizenship Award.

The Parkview room and the other three meeting rooms means that LCNSCS can offer new opportunities and activities for the community.

In addition to the Book club, Film Club, Bridge and chess we have installed a Shuffleboard – an exciting new game for all. We are hoping to add more activities to make the most use of the excellent facilities and we welcome any suggestions. We will also be encouraging other Lane Cove community organisations to use our space. We are already a reception point for donations to Delvena Women’s Refuge and hope to continue to build on that partnership. Statement made by Trent Zimmerman MP in the Parliament of Australia, 22nd May 2017 Mr Speaker One of the inspiring parts of our jobs as Members of Parliament is the opportunity to work with individuals and organisations in our electorates who are helping others in need – be it the thousands of people who volunteer their time or the dedicated professionals working in the community sector.

For many years I served on the board of the Crows Nest Community Centre, and I saw their incredible work firsthand.

I also know my part of Sydney has been something of a trailblazer in the development of great community initiatives.

For example, the early development of the Mens Shed movement occurred in Lane Cove.

More recently the Waverton Hub has provided a new model for engaging communities in a way that is attracting interest across the country.

And back in 1961, what is now called Lane Cove & North Side Community Services was a pioneer in the development of volunteerbased organisations serving the welfare of local communities.

Today Lane Cove & North Side Community Services provide vital support for those living on the lower north shore – particularly the elderly and those with a disability.

Recently I had the opportunity to participate in the opening of the Service’s new premises in Lane Cove. I was delighted that we were able to secure a federal grant to assist in their move.

The new premises will allow the Service to better meet the needs of the local community and I congratulate all those involved in bringing these new facilities to fruition.

More importantly, I want to record in this Parliament the gratitude of so many in our community for the dedication of its staff and volunteers – led by the Chair of the Board, John Devine and its General Manager, Gillian Batt.

Our community is stronger for all they do.

Dog Park Etiquette It’s important to respect the rules and to be aware of the risks involved when visiting a dog park.

Off-leash dog parks are a wonderful resource provided by our local councils to help dog owners to exercise their furry friend. To share the space safely and courteously, dog owners need to behave sensibly and be completely alert during their visit.

Are all dogs suited to visiting a dog park?

Certain dogs are best avoiding a dog park altogether. These include: ● Dogs less than 6 months of age ● Dogs who are afraid of other dogs ● Dogs with fear aggression ● Undesexed dogs (particularly in-season bitches) ● Dogs with severe osteoarthritis or other painful conditions ● Dogs recovering from recent surgery

How much supervision do I need to provide?

It is extremely important to keep a close eye on your dog at all times and be ready to put your dog back on a leash if he or she is starting to look anxious or playing too rough. It is not possible to properly supervise your dog whilst having a mobile phone conversation, so try to restrict your mobile phone within the vicinity of the dog park.

If your dog tends to be aggressive towards a particular breed or size of dog, then it is your responsibility to either avoid the dog park altogether (preferred option) or remove your dog if you perceive there is a risk of an attack.

Is it OK for the kids to take our dog?

While there is no law against it, it is preferable that children do not take their dog to an off-leash area without an accompanying adult. If a fight were to break out, children are at a greater risk of severe injury from a dog bite and the effects of trauma.

Also be very careful taking children under the age of 10 to dog parks as they will often instinctively want to approach dogs they are unfamiliar with and are unable to read their body language. Dogs are often in a high state of arousal while exercising in dog parks, so the risk of dog bites is increased.

How can I tell if my dog likes going?

Every dog owner that visits an off-leash dog area should be familiar with how to read dog body language.

Tail wagging in dog language simply means a willingness to communicate and does not always mean a happy dog, particularly if that dog has a stiff posture.

Friendly and sociable dogs usually have a relaxed and ‘floppy’ posture, with the whole dog wagging rather than just the tail. For further information, visit http:// petpep.ava.com.au/animal_ behaviour.

Are there any risks at a dog park?

The main risks are: 1) Infectious diseases Like daycare centres for

children, dog parks are a haven for canine infectious diseases such as: - Conjunctivitis - G astroenteritis (including Parvovirus which can be fatal) - Infectious tracheitis (canine cough) - P arasites such as worms and fleas 2) Dog fights - Mixing unfamiliar dogs in a confined area has the potential to lead to aggression and there is always the risk of a dog attack. In most cases, the aggressor is fearful and anxious (not dominant) and the dog’s nervous body language is often evident well before the bite.

3) Heat stress - Certain breeds are at risk of heat stress, so visits to the dog park should be avoided in the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm). Brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced breeds), Staffordshire Bull Terriers, obese dogs and dogs with preexisting heart conditions are at an increased risk.

Common courtesy Before visiting your local dog park, consider the following: • CLEAN UP: Always clean up thoroughly after your dog.

Most parks have poo bags and bins provided.

• KEEP UP-TO-DATE: Keep your dog’s vaccinations, flea/ tick prevention and deworming up to date to help prevent the spread of disease and parasites.

• NO SICKNESS: Dogs who have recently been diagnosed with infectious diseases should not attend the dog park until the vet has given clearance.

This is usually two weeks for infectious tracheitis or five days for conjunctivitis.

• BE FRIENDLY: For many people, the local dog park is a way to interact with their community as well as exercise their dog.

Just when you thought you were covered...

Insurance is a topic fraught with pain. Everyone has a story about an argument with an insurance company and how they thought they were covered but turned out not to be due to some minor technicality.

In times past, travel insurance was sold predominantly through travel agencies. Certainly when I entered the retail industry some 25 years ago, senior consultants flicked policy issue to more junior consultants to process. It struck me then, and occasionally now, at how little attention people can pay to something that may have huge consequences on their financial wellbeing. Thankfully consultants are now better trained and consumers generally more savvy – yet this does not mean there aren’t pitfalls that continue to trap the unwary.

A huge chunk of the travelling population continues to leave Australia without insurance. It is a myth that ‘the government’ will see you right if you run into difficulties overseas. The government (that is you and I the taxpaying public), will provide consular assistance and may provide a loan, but the onus is on you to be insured. If you can’t afford insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Insurance is equally valuable for domestic travel. Because domestic policies do not cover medical expenses, premiums are lower and they are a worthy investment - even moreso when family travel is concerned. Of course you will amend/cancel your plans because of your child’s sudden ear infection, rather than risk permanent hearing damage. You can do this painlessly if you’ve insurance in place.

Pre-existing medical conditions are a nightmare. We have had client claims refused because the insurer believed there was a causal relationship between a pre-existing condition and the recent development that has caused cancellation, though they are seemingly unrelated. If in doubt, declare – breast cancer a decade ago, a new knee two years ago, your visit to the dentist last week for the removal of wisdom teeth and so on.

My own policy states that an “Existing Medical Condition is any physical defect, condition, illness or disease for which treatment, medication or advice (including investigation) has been received or prescribed by a medical or dental advisor in the 90 days prior to the Relevant Time.” Some conditions are automatically covered, but it pays to check.

You should note that someone else’s pre-existing condition is NOT covered. So if you are planning a $50k trip of a lifetime to

Africa or South America and your elderly parent suffers from a chronic illness, be prepared to lose that money should s/he get ill and you have to cancel.

Australia is a land of migrants with 28% of us born overseas. You might never realise until you come to claim that your policy may also stipulate that “We will not pay for claims caused by the death, injury, sickness or disease of any person living outside of Australia.”

Nor are you necessarily covered when flights go awry. Two years ago my international flight to Dallas was delayed by 10 hours so that I missed the onward connection to Miami. As they were separate tickets, my only option was to reissue to a new flight, now more expensive because it was within 24 hours. The extra ticket costs, the reissue fees and the car amendment costs came close to $900 for two of us, none of which was claimable from either Qantas or the insurance company. We will not pay for claims caused by Transport Provider caused cancellations, delays or rescheduling other than when caused by strikes.

Not all polices are created equal and it pays to check what you are covered for.

Motorcycle/moped cover is usually extra, but essential for young people who will climb on a bike without thinking.

However without a helmet, the extra premium is worthless.

Ditto skiing. Most insurers charge extra for ski coverage, but don’t ever consider going off-piste as your cover will be rendered useless.

Clients often tell us they are covered by their credit card for insurance, or their spouse’s company insurance and ask us if this will be sufficient.

For around a decade now, travel agents are prohibited by the Financial Services Act against commenting on policies for which they have received no training. Nor can we recommend one policy over another, among those for which we have been trained.

Our advice is simple – you must satisfy yourself by reading the proposal document.

It is reassuring to know that most policies will cover you for incidentals such as phone calls and magazines if you are forced to while away unplanned time in hospital. Or for kidnap and ransom. This last one we hope never to use. Insurance itself is just that: an investment you hope never to call in.

Lane Cove’s longest running shop turns 40!

Cove Craft Association celebrated 40 years of trading on June 6th. It is thought to be the longest continuously operating shop in Lane Cove.

With 25 members ranging in age from their 30’s through to their 90’s, they are predominantly local people with a strong interest in producing quality handmade items.

The oldest and foundation member, Eva Purnell, has been a member from the beginning and has held a number of positions, including President for many years.

Fire & Emergency Services Levy From July, the NSW Government’s Fire and Emergency Services Levy (FESL) levy will be collected by Council through your rates notice and then passed on to the NSW Government. The NSW Government has now released the details of the levy rate for each classification of property. Support for local businesses Official openings – Lane Cove & North Side Community Services and Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre Congratulations to the teams involved with organising two wonderful official opening events last month. Lane Cove & North Side Community Services and the Music and Cultural Centre both officially marked their new residences in the Lane Cove Community Hub with opening events last month. It was a great pleasure to see these groups utilising these wonderful Council facilities and most importantly, to see the spaces filled with volunteers, students and staff who are all benefitting directly from the investment in these facilities.

12ft Skiff Club and Swim Club I continue to be amazed by the sporting talent of our local community and the commitment of local volunteers who keep these clubs running year in, year out. The 12ft Skiff Club recently held their annual presentation evening and I was astounded to hear that in 2018, the Club will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary – what an achievement!

As Patron of the Lane Cove Swim Club, I attended their Trophy Presentation evening with the theme "Beach Party".

It was a colourful, fun event, where swimmers of all ages were recognised for their achievements and success over the past year.

Opening of Lane Cove Literary Awards Lane Cove Library once again hosted a terrific evening to mark the launch of the Lane Cove Literary Awards, as well as two new publications.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to Lane Cove Literary Awards 2016: An Anthology and Celebrating Lane Cove: 2017 Anthology. Both publications reflect the commitment of Lane Cove to quality literacy, creative and cultural programs. The 2017 Literary Awards are now open with three categories: Short Story, Memoir and Poetry. Children’s Voices for Reconciliation Council is fortunate to have a strong 21-year history with local schools and childcare centres who perform in the annual Children’s Voices for Reconciliation event. This is a terrific morning of performance, dance and song that showcases what reconciliation means to the young people of Lane Cove. I enjoyed the opportunity to attend the event during National Reconciliation Week and watch the proud students and teachers. A big thank you to the teachers who worked so hard to put together such memorable performances – each item helped to reflect Australia’s Reconciliation journey. Thank you also to Karen Smith from the Aboriginal Heritage Office who hosted the day.

For a long time, local councils have been compulsorily collecting taxes and levies on behalf of the NSW Government through your quarterly council rates notice.

Many ratepayers are probably unaware of the significant cost-shifting burden placed on councils by the NSW Government and ultimately charged to ratepayers. These taxes and levies include property valuation fees levied by the Land and Property Management Authority (1.37% increase in 2016/17); and contributions to Fire and Emergency Services (2.7% increase in 2016/17), which assists in funding the State Emergency Service and the Fire Services. This is additional to the new Fire and Emergency Services Levy (FESL) which will be charged from 1st July 2017.

Councils are also required to contribute to repayment of the principal of loans to the Sydney Regional Development Fund (2.75% increase in 2016/17).

Annual council financial audits are now required to be conducted by the NSW Auditor General, where previously tenders could be called for audit services. For Hunters Hill Council alone, this mandatory requirement has incurred a 49% increase in our external audit costs.

Council employee salaries are independently determined, with an increase of 2.2% expected for 2017/18. Similarly, waste charges will increase by 2.2% in 2017/18.

Many of council’s fees and charges, particularly in relation to development applications, are externally set by NSW legislation. Council rates are charged as a percentage of the property valuation determined by the NSW Government.

For example, on a residential property with land valuation of $1m, the following rates apply: Hunters Hill Council $1585, City of Ryde $1659, Lane Cove Council $1616, Northern Beaches Council (Manly) $2264 and City of Parramatta $3132.

Note, this information has been collated from the various council websites.

The NSW Government also determines any overall increases in council rates, through ‘rate pegging’, which sets the maximum increase to the total rate revenue councils can charge. For 2017/18, rate pegging has been set at 1.5%. With almost all of the compulsory taxes, fees and levies passed on the councils by the NSW Government increasing by well over the 1.5% rate pegging limit, it is no surprise that councils across NSW struggle with maintaining a balanced budget position.

Hunters Hill Art Exhibition The recent Hunters Hill Art Exhibition was an outstanding event and drew large crowds to the various exhibition activities, including the Festival of Art Weekend with HHH Pop Up Bar, live music, free art classes, art and history tours, food and wine and more.

400 extra bus services for Lane Cove For far too long, public transport facilities have been a bone of contention in the Lane Cove electorate.

Overcrowded buses in peak times and not enough services was the justified complaint of many constituents.

Now things have changed for the better following representations I have made to my colleague, Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance.

Thanks to his assistance, I have been able to announce more than 400 extra weekly bus services in the Lane Cove area in response to increased demand.

The new services, which will begin on 4th June, have been made possible by the NSW Government’s Growth Services Program, which delivers more buses for customers when and where they’re needed.

As Sydney continues to grow, we need to make sure that we are delivering enough services to meet the needs of the community.

For that reason, we’ve created new services on routes that service Lane Cove linking the City, Lane Cove West, Marsfield, Macquarie Park, and Macquarie University.

The biggest news is the introduction of the new route 530, which will provide direct access between the Inner West and Lower North Shore. It will operate every 20 minutes during weekday morning and afternoon peak times, and every 30 minutes at other times, seven days a week. Key destinations served include Burwood, Five Dock, Russell Lea, Drummoyne, Hunters Hill, Linley Point, Lane Cove and Chatswood.

In direct response to increased demand, we will be adding 10 extra services a week to route 285 between the city and Mars Road.

Other additional services that will enhance journeys for Lane Cove include: ● M ore than 60 additional weekly services on route 252 between Lane Cove West and the city, which will be extended to deliver new links between Gladesville, Hunters Hill, Linley Point and the lower North Shore, including Artarmon, Gore Hill, Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards and North Sydney. ● A n extra 10 weekly services on route 292 between the city and Marsfield via Lane Cove and Macquarie Park ● M ore than 30 services on route 506 between the city and East Ryde now extended to and from Macquarie University. ● M ore than 50 extra weekly services on route 518 from Macquarie University to the city via Gladesville.

There will also be timetable changes to existing route 536 between Gladesville, Hunters Hill and Chatswood. This will be modified to operate during weekday morning and afternoon peak periods only, with services outside of these times replaced by routes 252 and 530.

At the same time, route 265 from Lane Cove will operate to and from North Sydney instead of McMahons Point, reducing duplication of services operating between North Sydney and McMahons Point. Travel options between McMahons Point and North Sydney will still be available on routes 254 and 291.

New timetables will be available online using the trip planner at transportnsw.info. Plan trips by downloading realtime transport apps, and customers can receive bus service updates for their area by following @BusesInfo on Twitter or by phoning the Transport Info Line on 131 500.

Federal Budget 2017 The focus of the Federal parliament over the last month has been the 2017 Federal Budget, which outlines our plan to lock in Australia’s economic growth, improve services like health and education, and tackle challenges such as housing affordability and infrastructure.

One of our challenges has been to ensure Federal spending is sustainable and the government has taken further action to return the Budget to balance.

We cannot keep borrowing to fund the day-to-day operations of government. Building on the $25 billion of Budget repair already delivered by the government, the Budget outlines a path back to a surplus by 2020-21.

Returning the Budget to balance has required some tough decisions – both by containing costs and also through new revenue measures such as the levy which will be applied to major banks.

Within those constraints, the government has been able to: ●

I ncrease funding for our schools with an additional $18.6 billion over ten years to implement Gonski 2.0.

●

I mprove health care with more funding for public hospitals and the future of Medicare guaranteed.

●

P rovide support for small and medium size businesses to improve their competitiveness.

●

S ecure the future of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is so important to helping those in our community with disabilities.

●

P rovide funding to build a second airport for Sydney and increase funding for public transport through a $10 billion rail infrastructure fund.

●

M ake it easier for people to buy a home through a plan to address housing affordability.

All of these decisions are about creating more opportunities for all Australians.

Gonski 2.0 A key focus in the Budget has been our reforms to school funding, which will see an extra $18.6 billion in funding flow to government and non-government schools over the coming ten years.

As part of the changes, the government is moving to a fairer, needs-based model which will replace the 27 separate deals negotiated by the former government. The absence of a nationally-consistent approach meant students were being treated differently, even if they had the same needs, based on which state or territory they lived in.

All local public schools and most non-government local schools will see their funding increased over the next ten years.

Support for our veterans Supporting and assisting our veterans is an issue very close to my heart. In the Budget we are making sure all past and current service personnel have easier access to free mental health support and services.

Enhanced access to counselling from the Veterans Families Counselling Service will also assist partners and dependents of veterans. This includes the 586 veterans and their families living in our community. All DVA Clients - indeed, 1135 DVA clients in the electorate of North Sydney - will benefit from the investment in this year’s budget to modernise DVA's ICT system to provide easier access to DVA services and improve processing times for claims.

Delivering a boost and tax relief for small business In this Budget we’re extending the Instant Asset Write-Off for our 28,297 small businesses operating in the North Sydney electorate. We are also delivering company tax cuts for small and medium business which will mean they can invest and employ more. We are also creating a fund to help train apprentices in key trades and skills to get more young people into work.

Securing the NDIS The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a game changer for those living with a disability. It is described as an insurance scheme, as Australians will be able to call on it for support in the event they have an existing or new disability.

The government has made the decision to increase the Medicare levy by 0.5 per cent to ensure the scheme is properly funded in the years ahead. The levy will begin in two years’ time when the additional funds are needed.

Volunteers could be from community organisations helping those in need; those working to protect our local environment; support our schools and sporting organisations; or assisting with the many not-forprofit groups in our area. Nominees should live or work in the North Sydney electorate.

Scout Hike 2017 - A Historical Adventure.

In early May, Scouts from all over the region participated in an independent hike for the weekend.

Scouts were responsible for carrying their own tent, food and supplies. They had to brave the weather, navigate to a number of Historical Adventure Bases, and suffer their own cooking skills.

The 1st Lane Cove Scouts who participated had a ball, enjoying the independence, the Activity Bases and they mostly came back in the same clothes ready for a home cooked meal and a hot bath!

Well done Ava, Nick, Seb and Zack. Here’s some of their feedback: “It was a tonne of fun, not to mention a big struggle from time-to-time. The activities were all based on historical events such as The Battle of Hastings, Red Barron and The Crusades - all well-made and interesting.”

“We took a two-hour bus ride and set up camp in the dark. The thing I enjoyed most was the activities because they were fun and taught you new things.”

“In the morning for breakfast we had hot baked beans. I forgot to pack a bowl so I ate from the billy lid.”

To plan or not to plan?

What makes one watercolour artist stand out from another? Their interpretation or style is the key.

The sombre mood of Anzac Day was broken by John Haycraft’s masterly watercolour demonstration during the April meeting of Lane Cove Art Society.

John has spent a lifetime sketching, tutoring in a range of academic institutions, and painting. He even had his very early work assessed by one of the founding fathers of the LCAS, namely Lloyd Rees. They broke muffins together and discussed art in Lloyd’s studio at Northwood all those years ago!

Today John is known for his very accomplished architectural illustrations. Little wonder then that a healthy crowd attended this autumn meeting.

Demonstrations give an insight not only into the technique being shown but also into the mind of the artist doing the presentation. Some artists plan their work in a logical detailed manner, whereas others jump right in, painting ‘alla prima’ (that is at first attempt).

John takes a very methodical approach to his watercolour painting.

He saw a similarity to sport. Just as it is beneficial to research the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent so you determine what strategies and tactics to use to challenge them, so too it pays to understand how you are going to tackle the watercolour subject.

Planning is paramount for John. He employs four steps in his approach to watercolour.

Canyon was selected for this demonstration and Arches 300gsm was the paper used. Find the main shapes.

Determine where the tonal values are and discover where the rhythms are going to flow. An initial sketch using a 2B pencil was done outlining main shapes and tonal values, acting as a map that provided a ‘watercolour path’ to follow.

2. Step two used a loaded brush (lots of water) which introduced the general colour scheme and acted as the underpainting in the final work. This ‘wet-in-wet’ stage often sees colours magically mixing on the paper. For this demonstration, John worked from light to dark.

3. The third step in John’s plan was to reduce the water in his brush. More definition was given to the shapes suggested in the earlier stage. A dry brush allows the initial layers of colour to shine through which enhances the textural qualities of the final work. To ensure that the watercolour was dry before applying a glaze, John used a hairdryer. As the glaze was applied, John made sure sections of the white paper were left to act as highlights in

the work. John left white paper on cliff tops, tree trunks and rock faces so that the rhythm of light flowed through the work.

4. Darker tones were added in the final stage injecting interest, depth and detail in the finished work. Ultramarine blue and umber were used to give depth.

Caution is required at this stage because too much detail can detract from the artwork.

John Haycraft’s demonstration illustrated marks that were meticulously planned, yet retained a freshness to the eye. So many of the marks possessed a beautiful abstract quality reflecting this artist’s interpretation of the scene being painted.

John’s well prepared demonstration showed that the role of an artist is to interpret a subject. Their own emotion must be on display, otherwise “just take a photo.”

Julie Simmons, who has won many awards for her beautiful watercolours on paper, will be giving a demonstration on watercolour on canvas, a relatively new technique.

Meetings of Lane Cove Art Society are held in the downstairs premises of the Lane Cove Community Centre, 166 Longueville Rd. Entry is free and all who have an interest in art, in any shape or form, are most welcome.

The Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards were established in 1981 by the Lane Cove community with the intention to promote, support and encourage young and talented emerging artists throughout Australia.

Dr Rees was one of Australia's most treasured artists of the 20th century.

Dr Rees was a very active and generous local of the Lane Cove municipality and many of his most wonderful drawings, paintings and etchings come from the surrounding landscape.

Open to artists and residents of Australia 18 - 30 years, works can be in drawing, painting, and printmaking.

Applications close at midnight on 6th August.

Judges for 2017 are Guy Warren OAM and Katrina Cashman, Assistant Art Gallery Director/ Senior Curator.

The main award is an Acquisitive Prize of $5000, with the artwork becoming part of the Lane Cove Municipal Art Collection and the artist receiving a solo exhibition the following year in Gallery Lane Cove.

Council are the major sponsor, with further support from Lane Cove Art Society which provides a Highly Commended Prize of $1500. Centrehouse Art Centre provides a further $1000 for the Commended prize.

2017 artXtra! winners Living up to its reputation as a must-see display of excellent works, Lane Cove Art Society’s artXtra! exhibition attracted over 180 entries.

A large crowd attended opening night on Friday 5th May to see the impressive show and meet the artists. All agreed that judge Susie Devenport FRAS did a fine job in selecting the eight winners and the runners-up.

Hiren Patel was awarded the Lloyd Rees Prize of $1250, jointly sponsored by Ardency Greenwich and the LC Art Society. Dana Dion won the Guy Warren Prize of $1250, jointly sponsored by Lane Cove Council and the Art Society.

The Joyce Mill Bequest Prize for oils or acrylics was won by John Perkins ($400), while the Art Society’s sponsored prizes of $400 each for watercolours, mixed media, pastels or drawings, and prints were won by Robyne Berling, Joy Creed Meyers, Linda Butterfield and Margaret Vickers respectively. The Art Scene Ryde sponsored the small works prize of $300, which was won by Pat Wilson.

The raffle painting ‘Still Life’ by John Perkins was won by Eileen Sargent of Lane Cove. Linda Butterfield won the Viewers' Choice award for her magnificent ‘Mystical Cradle Mountain, Tasmania’. Jill Robert of Lane Cove was the lucky viewer who won a magnum of wine for voting in the Viewer's Choice. The Children’s' Choice of a painting of ‘Tiger’ was won by Masa.

Lane Cove Youth Orchestra always strives to secure creative and informative venues for music workshops and performances.

Their weekend ‘Taronga ZoosnooZ’ and music workshop on 6-7th May was no exception.

Thanks to the efforts of the Taronga Zoo staff, they slept in tents inside the zoo (and dodged most of the rain); woke to an impressive sunrise; enjoyed walking safari tours beholding some of the world’s most magnificent creatures; had close encounters with cute/cuddly plus slippery/scaly individuals; then to top it all off, they worked hard in an exhilarating program of rehearsals in the zoo’s education centre.

LCYO thanks Taronga Zoo’s enlightened staff, their inspired tutorial and conducting team, their tireless parent helpers and most of all, their hard-working young musicians who managed to nail that Beethoven!

Landers Road named after respected pioneer Described in his obituary as ‘a trifle brusque in his later years, devoting zealous attention to duty throughout his municipal career, a stickler for fair and straightforward action, a warm friend and a vigorous opponent’, John Frederick Landers was a long-time and highly respected resident of Lane Cove.

S

on of Jonathon and Mary Landers, John was born in London around 1831 and immigrated with his family to Australia when he was a boy.

On the 14 February 1854, John married Irish immigrant Elizabeth Mary Kane. They had a family of four children; Louisa Ellen (1857-1917), Grace Emily (1960-1929), John Frederick Valentine (1866-1926) and Ferdinand William (1869-1949). In 1862 John paid the deposit required to assist a number of Elizabeth’s family to join them from Mallow, County Cork, Ireland.

As a young man of 24, John commenced employment as a Clerk in the Surveyor General’s Department. He continued to work in the Public Service until his retirement in 1887, attaining the respected position of Secretary and Cashier of the Survey Department.

John and Elizabeth lived on the North Shore, initially at Milsons Point and then St Leonards, before purchasing land in Longueville (as the Lane Cove area was then known).

John’s 1872 purchase of two allotments in the Nichols Wharf Estate comprised seven acres of fenced land and 23 acres of bushland. By 1882 he had built a two-storey family home on the seven acre lot. They named the house Kilbeheny after Elizabeth’s homeland.

As John settled into the area he was said to have “identified himself with matters affecting the advancement of the district”. He was reported as the originator of the separation movement, wishing to establish local self-government from Willoughby’s River Ward into a new Borough of Lane Cove.

In 1885, a petition by Willoughby’s River Ward residents for separation was unsuccessful. In 1888 John was elected Alderman for the River Ward in the Borough of Willoughby. In 1893 a second petition was successful and the Municipality of Lane Cove was proclaimed on the 9th February 1895.

John was one of four former Willoughby Aldermen elected to the new Lane Cove Council. He continued to serve until his death in 1900, aged 69. He was said to have been approached to nominate for the position of Mayor a number of times, but declined because of his advanced age.

Landers Road, named after John and located on the north side of the family’s property, was first listed in the Lane Cove rate book of 1908.

By 1919 the family’s large holdings of land in central Lane Cove were being prepared for subdivision and sale. The Landers Estate subdivision was advertised for sale in 1920. It included the land from Landers Road to Burns Bay Road and west of Longueville Road to the line of Cox’s Lane. The subdivision offered over 95 residential blocks and 35 business or shop sites.

The Landers family home Kilbeheny, later known as Landers House, was included in the subdivision sale.

The house was demolished and replaced with another reusing much of the original materials.

In 1956, the newly formed Lane Cove Businessmen’s Club was looking for premises. It purchased the house at 1 Birdwood Avenue and using volunteer labour and professional guidance, the building was made into a clubhouse for the organisation. In 1994 the Lane Cove Businessmen’s Club became the Lane Cove Club.

Lane Cove remembers Lane Cove Council and Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch remembers events from 75 years ago through periodic presentations at the Lane Cove Library. The presentations are free of charge and are becoming increasingly popular.

Lane Cove Council and Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch are hosting presentations on the Battle of Bullecourt, the Battle of Beersheba and Kokoda through 2017.

The following is an excerpt from a presentation entitled ‘Fall of Singapore’ that Graeme Davis, Vice President of the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch, delivered in February.

In response to the growing concern that Japan was planning to go to war, the Australian Government sent the Army’s 8th Division along with RAN and RAAF assets to Malaya and Singapore in 1941.

In early December 1941, Japan launched simultaneous attacks from aircraft carriers and land based airfields which caught the United States and Britain by surprise.

Japanese troops landed in southern Thailand (nee Siam) and northern Malaya and two months later were on the coastline at Johore Bahru preparing for their amphibious assault across the narrow causeway to Singapore Island.

A week later, on 15 February 1942, the Commander of the British Forces, Lieutenant General Percival surrendered and so began three and a half years as Prisoners of War for more than 100,000 service personnel. This included more than thirty soldiers from Lane Cove, including Private Neil Tipping who died in July 1945.

Four days later on the 19th of February 1942 – 75 years ago - the war came to Australia when Darwin was bombed.

FOCAS GROUP: Become a Community Centre volunteer! 1st Monday of the month. Morning tea is provided. We knit, sew, crochet all sorts of articles and make handmade calico dolls for children in hospitals and the needy. We have four street stalls each year to generate information about our service and fundraising. We look forward to meeting you!
