This month it was a real pleasure to chat with the women who volunteer for the local junior sports clubs. There has been a phenomenal rise in the number of girls and women playing what were traditionally seen as ‘male’ sports and Lane Cove certainly reflects that. Although those clubs would really like to attract more volunteers, it is to the credit of the committees and the parents that they keep flourishing. You can read more about this wonderful local story on page 14.

We also loved to hear that Hunters Hill Theatre, which recently celebrated an astonishing 90 years treading the boards, has found a new home at Club Ryde, with a dedicated space (with an in-house theatre bar, no less). The group took us through their incredible history and gave us a glimpse into the future shows (p18-20).

Elsewhere in the magazine this month, Amanda Bracks, owner of Soulful Fitness, takes us through her business’ fascinating journey, while we loved to hear from our regular supporter Adrienne Witteman whose business, Trendsetter Travel, enjoyed its 30year birthday this month. Trendsetter was a bellwether for the pandemic, so it was uplifting to read in her dispatch from America that she said was “tangible proof that we had survived."

Finally, it’s Bastille Day on the 14th and our Chef, Bern, loves an excuse for a bit of a feast. There’s a lovely winter warming recipe for Pissaladière on p34.

Their website states that the community is “tired of writing letters, signing petitions and meeting with elected representatives, only to have their views ignored in favour of party donors, lobbyists, special interest groups, and the party line.”

Rod spoke about community groups acting together to gain collective power.

Elizabeth Farrelly, who has written on architectural and planning issues for three decades as a columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald, reported that she had been fired for not disclosing she was a member of the Labor Party. She considered this was ‘disproportionate’ and ‘grossly unfair.’

She said, “We have allowed developers to convince us that high rise is the only way to provide housing affordability.

“Public land is seen as a developer’s opportunity and rezoning of central Parramatta for high rise will destroy more heritage buildings because the Heritage Laws in NSW are too weak.”

In 2012, the Better Planning Network was established in response to the then O’Farrell Government’s proposed planning reforms. Concern was growing about the pressure for development at the cost of public interest and the environment, and without community involvement.

Apartment buildings were going up across Sydney, often on inappropriate sites, and mining projects were being pushed through with damaging consequences for the environment.

Privately-certified, high-rise developments proved to be shoddy and clean water was being polluted by both open and underground mines. There was a strong feeling that the planning legislation before State Parliament was prioritising developer profits over the public interest.

The primary role of the BPN is to watch and consider planning proposals, meet with the NSW Department of Planning and the Environment, hopefully to influence decisions, and to circulate information concerning planning to its members.

At the end of May this year,

the BPN held its Annual General Meeting. Three speakers were invited to address the topic: “State capture by the development industry?” The three speakers were Tim Sneesby, a strategic planner with Waverly Council, Rod Simpson, architect, urban designer and former Greater Sydney Commissioner for the Environment, and Elizabeth Farrelly, architecture critic, columnist and author of a new book, Killing Sydney. Rod Simpson began his talk by saying, “Why the question mark? There is no question that the State has been captured by the development industry.”

Tim Sneesby explained the working of the planning system in NSW, how the Planning Department can be in the firing line between Ministers and the Department of Treasury. He was also critical of what he considered a complicit media simply repeating media releases and failing to ask critical questions or treat planning as newsworthy.

The times, they are a’changing This year, in April, Trendsetter Travel celebrated its 30th anniversary. On the day itself, April 6th, I flew out of Sydney to escort our first group to America after the two year Covid induced hiatus.

While I had other things on my mind – uppermost of these was getting a negative PCR test to allow me to fly – it was some days later that I realised the significance of that journey. It was tangible proof that we had survived. By Adrienne Witteman.

he upward return-to-travel trajectory started long before April as the confident among you booked in late 2021 for 2022 journeys, in anticipation of a groundswell of demand. And so, it came to pass. What has been termed “revenge travel” is like a tsunami of demand. Sure, there was a slight negative blip when Russia invaded Ukraine but adjustments have been made – airlines have changed flight paths and cruise companies itineraries to avoid the trouble spots – and confidence returned to the market.

Meanwhile, I have never previously seen such demand for premium fares. Prices have skyrocketed. It may be tempting to categorise this as airline pricegouging but here at the coalface we see the complete picture. Airlines have not yet returned pre-Covid capacity to the system – they simply do not have the staff to cover the same number of flights (and won’t have for some time to come) – and in some cases are not flying at all.

For example, Cathay Pacific has been closed for business due to Covid restrictions for the last five months, meaning thousands of seats lost on a once popular link to Europe and gateway to Asia. And if you want to fly direct to Africa, Qantas is your only choice while South African Airways rebuilds from bankruptcy on the back of more profitable routes. Marry lesser capacity with increased demand and the only outcome is higher pricing.

Meanwhile thousands have allowed their passports to expire! I freely admit

that this flabbergasts me, though I will happily forgive those who thought they’d never travel again but were driven to change their minds after two years of lockdown … Covid has initiated some aberrant behaviours.

And having now waited (patiently) behind plenty of people who’ve forgotten what to do in a security check queue, there is a degree of truth in Alan Joyce’s statement that travellers are not yet match fit. Especially when there is so much more to produce.

A passport. A vaccination certificate.

Less frequently now, proof of a negative PCR or RAT. Then before you can return to Australia, online completion of your DPD. You don’t know what that is? The Digital Passenger Declaration is intended to replace the form that used to take you one minute to do on the plane, yet you still do both. The app gets a one-star rating. Grrrh. (A tip: completion on a laptop or iPad is much quicker than on a smartphone.)

Change is also afoot at an agency level. With around 30% of staff leaving

the industry during 20/21, those remaining are hugely busy and to try us just that little bit more, some strong headwinds are looming. The decision by most airlines to reduce commissions to 1%, effective 1 July. On a $2000 ticket to Europe, this means $10-$12 remuneration and on a typical business class $80-$90 remuneration, since commission is not usually paid on taxes. So don’t be surprised when your agent requests a fee before quoting or tells you that s/he will no longer handle flights because the increased requirements these days are just not worth it …

The times, they are a’changing, yet 30 years on, there’s still much to celebrate. Connecting people with other people, and with awe-inspiring and fabulous experiences is immensely emotionally satisfying. LIFE'S RICH PATTERN

Fish and guests

Ben Franklin famously quipped that fish and guests go off after three days. Since my stay with my sister comprises twenty separate three-day cycles, I’m a wee bit nervous.

House guest conflict can escalate rapidly because someone is setting up shop in your primary territory, a cherished space where you usually have a high degree of personal control. Enter a messy houseguest who clears out your fridge and exercises questionable hygiene principles and it’s a recipe for disaster. And if you’re the guest, you need to rapidly fall into step with the Way Things Are Done Here (no crumbs in the sink, shoes off at the door etc).

We’ve all been there. You issue a cheery, general ‘come and stay anytime!’ invitation and before you know it, your cousin’s brother-in-law’s neighbour turns up on the doorstep. While it’s nice to give back to backpackers (they’ve been a rare breed in the past couple of years), the best thing about them is they don’t outstay their welcome.

Matters can become tense quite quickly. And the worst part is, you don’t know you’ve done something wrong because you just did it the way you’d do it back home.

My daughter and husband recently stayed with a second cousin for a few days. The cousin-host’s nose was out of joint because they cleaned up after themselves and unpacked the dishwasher when she was out (the thinking being, this is my house and you are my guests, it’s insulting you feel you should do that).

Starting out with the right mindset and determination to do the right thing only gets you so far. I’ve made several rookie errors during my stay and no doubt there are more to come. The most obvious gaffs are below.

Somehow sitting propped on the windowsill didn’t feel right.

I squeezed my hand through to open the brass latch, which snapped off in my hand. Ah yes, my sister said, that one’s not really openable.

Mistake #3: The Taps. The skinny spout drinking water tap in one house turns out to be the incinerator hot water tap in another. Best to ascertain which one’s which before an accident happens. As I discovered a nanosecond too late.

Mistake #4: Showers. With three extra people in the house, we need to instate a roster otherwise the hot water’s gone by ten o’clock. Instant hot water boilers don’t seem to exist here.

Mistake #5: Parking. Don’t take your host’s spot. Also don’t take the neighbour’s spot. You can however park facing the wrong way (this was normal when I lived here but now feels unbelievably counter intuitive).

That said, we co-exist very peacefully, and I’ve fallen into step reasonably well so far. I’ve even managed to jam the window back into the frame. It’s been just all round wonderful in the UK during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee after a difficult couple of years. I’m already planning a giant slap up meal for everyone when I leave. Though I’ll be sure to leave fish off the menu, just to be on the safe side.

Mistake #1: Missing the Secret Dishwasher Cutlery Shelf.

Our dishwasher has a basket where we bung in all cutlery any old way so I never think to look for the secret sliding shelf at the top. Here, all the spoons must face the same way, with clear demarcation lines between each item.

Mistake #2: Trying to open the double-glazed window.

Owner of Soulful Fitness

 Soulful Fitness is a mainstay in Lane Cove having been a part of the community for seven years. You’re not just an ordinary gym are you?

We wanted to provide a space for those that don’t want to attend a gym to have an alternate option to exercise. Our aim is to provide a safe and comfortable studio to exercise in, encouraging members to move a little and do what they can manage in a low impact way in a non-intimidating environment. Wellness as well as physical and mental health is so crucial in today’s world, we provide a safe space for members to listen to their daily needs, perhaps it’s a way to detox and de-stress, or to play a little, or we help them harness those days when they’re brimming with energy. There are beautiful gentle restorative classes from sound healing, yin yoga, tai chi and meditation to the more strengthening Pilates reformer and ashtanga yoga classes.

We even have a scenic ride studio that operates all day long which most people don’t know about.  How did it come to pass that you ended up in LC? I actually worked in Lane Cove 15 years ago creating Bluefit with the owners of the company and stayed there for a couple of years as General Manager. After that I ran my consulting business meetings from local cafes and came across the space while looking with a friend for a restaurant and thought that it would be perfect for a yoga and Pilates studio. My father grew up on Burns Bay road and my nan also lived in Hunters Hill in her later years so with myself living in East Ryde, it was such a perfect location.  Even though you are a Lane Cove-based business, you’re often jetting to different locations – in Australia and overseas – to assist other fitness companies and individuals with the development of their business models. What led you down that path?

It all started almost 30 years ago, when I joined the fitness and leisure industry and at a very young age won NSW Manager of the year and got to travel to conferences all over the world and from that experience, I wrote my first book, ‘Changing Lives’.

The book gave other business owners an insight into how I had successfully built mine and other fitness and leisure businesses. It showed them how to sell health club memberships and personal training and I packed it with training techniques, prospecting ideas and marketing tools. I love inspiring people to start an exercise routine and also love teaching the fitness industry how to improve their operations. In 2019 I was one of four people, the only female, to be inducted into the Fitness Industry Roll of Honour.

 And since then, you have had two more published?

Yes, ‘Inspiration: The Secrets of 50 People and How They Achieved Their Health and Fitness Dreams’ and ‘Customer Acquisition: 465 Ways to Gain and Retain Customers’. I have also had many articles published and have written fitness courses.  How did you put the ‘Secrets of 50 People…’ book together?

At that stage, I had been working in the business for almost 20 years and I saw the many ways that people found success and happiness. I interviewed 50 people who I thought would inspire others to believe in themselves, and start their own health and fitness journey. With growing health problems and obesity epidemics all over the world, it was obvious to me that people needed motivation, inspiration, support and advice on how to lose weight, tone up, get fit, eat well, and look and feel the way they want.  The book ‘Customer Acquisition: 465 Ways to Gain and Retain Customers’ goes beyond fitness and is designed for anyone who is seeking to grow their customer base. Looking at Soulful Fitness seven years down the line, what has driven its success and growth?

The community and our focus on it has been the success to Soulful Fitness. The moment anyone walks in the door they are instantly a family member, a community member and a friend. Yoga is such a beautiful practice and doing it collectively brings a real authentic connection amongst those in the room and beings universally. Having good consistent business practices, manuals, team evaluations and lots of staff training really ensures we are doing our best at every given moment.

 You have given lectures and keynote speeches all over the world, including the US, Thailand, Philippines, NZ, Germany, China and India plus many more based on your business success in Australia. Was there knowledge gained overseas that you have brought back to these shores?

The fact that it doesn’t matter what culture you come from or what language you speak, humans thrive from being in a community, and maintain a regular exercise routine more easily exercising as part of a tribe opposed to individually.

Visiting many yoga studios while in India really formed an understanding of what services and workshops we wanted to provide at the studio. We have taken some of the best yoga practices around the world to ensure we have a very diverse range of practices for people to enjoy. In business the most important thing from all countries is that systems are so important to the ongoing success of any business.  You mentioned that you had family in this area when you were young. Are there any specific memories that stand out for you?

Definitely lunch with my nana when I was young was an absolute highlight, eating on the grass near some of the beautiful water views in the area.  When you’re not working and out and about in Lane Cove, what do you and your family get up to?

We love eating our supporting local restaurants such as Via Napoli, Lillah, and the Sushi Train. My daughter always had to get sushi after her swimming lessons at the aquatic centre.

My kids love having breakfast at Nibu and we all love taking a walk through the national park areas, playing with our dogs and heading to the beach to go surfing.

They bring a gorgeous, smiling energy into the club Megan, who joined LC Football as a player more than 10 years ago, explained how at the start of this year, the Club put together a specific female football strategy within the overall strategy; not easy for a Club that boasts 80 teams with more than 1100 members.

“We have been working on the girls’ teams for a long time; getting the mini roos through into juniors and it’s been great to form those teams.

“This is the first year we have been awarded a position in the Diamond League competition for girls under 12s and up. It has been a big thing for us, and something we’re really proud of.

“Diamond League is a quality level girls-only competition that enables the girls to develop their technical football skills and confidence far more quickly in a girlsonly environment,” she explained.

It's a similar situation over at LC Rugby Club where Touch Rugby started six years ago and has massively boosted the number of girls playing at the Club.

Sally, who has rugby running in her veins (her father

was Ron Graham who played for Australia), explained that the biggest highlight of their calendar is the six-week Touch competition in term four.

“We have between 600 and 800 players come along and 60 per cent of those are girls.

“It’s one of the biggest social events for us, bringing together kids from different schools and different backgrounds.

“Female participation is an evolving space for us.

Tackling doesn’t apply until the kids are over nine. It comes down to us making people feel safe when it comes to contact. Our motto is: you’ve got to make it social and you’ve got to keep it real,” she said.

Lisa is a seasoned junior club volunteer pro, sparked by a childhood that saw her accompany her Dad to North Sydney Bears games.

Now a mum to four boys, it was a given they would play League and, under their own steam, continue to do so. Lisa helped steer the growth of female players at the Tigers.

One of those drivers was the introduction of Blues Tag - an inclusive-style of Rugby League open to players from all backgrounds and abilities, with a focus on improving the players' fundamental skills – catching, passing and ingame communication.

Unlike Touch, the kids grab and pull a tag from their rivals’ uniform. It’s fast and kids can make more linebreaks which helps keep focus levels up.

“Three years ago, we introduced our first Blues Tag team. Before that we had a smattering of girls under sixes, or under nines, but then the District Board got behind Blues Tag and we’ve seen girls involvement increase each year. Now we almost have three girls’ teams,” she said.

Setting an example at a professional level is the North Sydney Bears, who introduced its first women’s team in 2018.

Fran explains that the District has seen a 300 per cent year-on-year growth in female participation.

“One of the things we talk about often is aiming for equality in the game.

“Just before Covid hit, we did an event for the North Sydney District Junior Rugby League at The Alcott where women in league who have senior roles told their stories.

“Then we had our Women in League round in late May with 70 girls from clubs across the district join us at the Bears game.

“They bring a gorgeous, smiling energy into the club and a whole new set of volunteers.

“Mums aren’t just team managers any more, or running the canteen. They’re coaching and they’re loving it,” Fran enthuses.

One of the benefits of having women run the boards and committees – for example, there are six women on the board of Lane Cove Football Club - is that the girls coming through can be reassured that there are no barriers to entry in the sports they wish to play.

Lisa Doumit explains that when she first started with the Tigers, there were only men on the committee.

“I think there are different positives women can bring to the boards, and I think it improves the dynamics,” she said.

Karen explained how, at LC Cricket and the Tigers, she witnessed what the power of a mixed male, female board has.

“It’s not a girl vs boy, or a women vs men thing, it’s whether women have been welcomed into the Clubs and in my experience here at LC Cricket and at the Tigers, we have been.

“It’s about having pathways available for girls; for younger girls to see older girls play, and women playing a bigger part in the operations. It’s important for them to see there is a progression for them, and that they can continue to play as they grow up.”

It's a strategy in place at all the local clubs. Megan said that it’s of particular focus at LC Football Club too.

“It’s a huge priority for us - providing a visible pathway for the girls.

“We have at least half a dozen women from the ladies team coaching the juniors,” she explained.

North Sydney Bears makes a point of devising ways that equality is visible to the girls. For example, the Bears alternate between male and female focused news and lead with the most newsworthy story, regardless of gender – something that would have been unheard of until at least five years ago.

Fran at the Bears explains that the Club has been leaders in introducing female teams and have been addressing barriers to entry.

“I’m hoping that if the Clubs below see what we’re doing, they will follow suit and more girls will be inclined to join their local clubs, whatever sport they choose,” she said.

All five of the local ladies will tell you that attracting and retaining volunteers is hard.

LC has a history of kids who leave local clubs to play for their private school teams, but that is changing. Along with that comes the challenge of managing increased numbers and teams. Most will tell you that it is the same families giving their time week after week.

What these ladies accomplish – hours upon hours of volunteered time – is nothing short of incredible. Above all, they say they don’t do it alone and they are backed by an army of superstar parents.

If your girl wants to turn up on the field, having mislaid her shinpads and having forgotten her water bottle, don’t hesitate to sign her up. They’re a welcoming bunch.

Making Ripples

Looking for examples of the Spirit in our natural surroundings, we headed to the nearby rock ledge by Lane Cove River. What a beautiful sight awaited us!

Maybe we can learn from the adaptive behaviour of ripples?

In our interactions with others, we can be open to being changed and adjusting our course to complement theirs.

We can accept those with whom we are thrust together and make the best of it, acknowledging we both have a right to be there. We can choose to emanate a positive spirit, rippling warmth and kindness to those around us.

he recent rain was trickling in narrow, vertical streams from the edge of the overhang every few centimetres.

Turning my attention from the beauty coming from above us, I noticed the effect upon the water below. Ripple patterns were everywhere – intersecting and forming ever-widening, complex patterns. Here was my illustration to share with our Sacred Space group – and Village Observer readers!

There is a mystery about the Spirit – what it is, how it works, spreads and interacts with us. We have some clues from our experience: those mysterious moments where something speaks deep inside of us in an uncanny way. Or the way we feel so ‘connected’ with others at times. Or we just ‘know’ something and we can’t explain why. My mother wasn’t a religious person, but one night she knew there was something wrong with me while I was overseas. She was very worried, having no way to contact me. She asked on my return what happened that night. I had been very ill, amidst a new group in a foreign land. Her ‘mother instinct’ just knew her daughter was in trouble.

Ripples, like the Spirit, move outward in waves of power, interact with others to reshape, and change course. Their destination is a mystery, dependent upon what lies in their path. There is power there, capable of being harnessed, but mysterious too. The ripples don’t choose their interactions, but adapt as they happen.

Even though our actions may be small, the ripple effect can magnify them to create extraordinary change. Who knows what effect your smile or affirmation really means to someone? As a Chaplain, I am often surprised how meaningful small acts of kindness can be in someone’s life.

If we can uplift another, they in turn, will be encouraged to do likewise, creating ripples of inspiring change. Don’t underestimate your power to create the change you want to see in the world!

The theatre also has an intern program for Year 11 and 12 high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in theatre production. A number of students from Marist Sisters College, Woolwich have participated in the program since 2015 learning the finer points of lighting and sound and box office management, and this will continue for each future production.

The Theatre has a rich history as the archives demonstrate the role it has played in providing an outlet for entertainment through Depression, Recession and the war years. Stories are legend and there are far too many to illustrate here but one of the funniest episodes was during Smugglers Beware in 1988.

One of the props used by a character, a fishwife, was a real fish, which was kept in the freezer after weekend performances. However, on one occasion, the Stage Manager’s assistant forgot to return the fish to the freezer.

At that time the Theatre was performing in the old wooden church hall; it was summer and it was hot.

Needless to say, a ‘pretend’ fish was used for all further performances.

Another memorable occasion was the production of Wanted One Body in 1998.

The director had seen a production of the play which was rather forgettable and decided to hatch a plot to make his version more superior. The play revolves around a murderess who is a twin, a part usually played by one actress because the ‘twins’ never appear on stage together.

However, the Director was aware that the actress chosen for the role did, in fact, have an identical twin sister. Every night at curtain call both of the twin sisters entered from opposite sides of the stage to an audible gasp of surprise and delight from the audience.

President’s message: Running a community theatre group is the same as running a business where relationships and connections are key and without our new partnership with Club Ryde our future looked uncertain. After a rocky two years thanks to Covid, Hunters Hill Theatre is now settled into its new home at Club Ryde. Club Ryde, its directors and staff have welcomed us with open arms and even gone so far as styling our foyer making for an impressive, sumptuous entrance to our new performance space. This new partnership is a win-win where patrons can enjoy a pre or post performance meal in the Club and enjoy a ‘bubbles at interval’ or other beverage at our in-house theatre bar.

We are thrilled to have moved to the centre of Ryde and we look forward to introducing affordable community theatre to new audiences in Ryde, Gladesville and Lane Cove as well as welcoming our Hunters Hill regular subscribers to our new venue.

We are keen to be a part of the community and play a role, and we welcome interested locals as volunteers and members – not only those keen to “tread the boards” in an acting capacity but others who may be a dab hand at building and painting sets, helping to design and make costumes and distributing posters advertising upcoming productions around local shopping centres.

Celebrating our 90th birthday in 2020 (although celebrations were delayed until the end of 2021), was a special moment and it was wonderful to take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about some of the amazing plays we have staged over the years and how we have entertained the local community for so long.

2022 and 2023 sees plans afoot for continuing and new collaborations. The Upper Crass Players, a young and edgy improv group, holds performances in the theatre throughout the year. We are also actively reaching out to educational institutions keen to provide high school and tertiary students hands-on experience in all aspects of production, from set and lighting design to sound, direction, stage management and costumes.

New and long-standing Directors have begun to submit their play options for 2023…we are going to be spoilt for choice and are so fortunate to continue to attract such talented experienced Directors offering entertaining and intellectually challenging pieces. The 2023 season will be launched in October this year and will offer a 4-play subscription.

New Exhibitions at Gallery Lane Cove Celebrating NAIDOC and the works of Northern Rivers NSW artists

Digital Dreaming: Decolonial Futures is a spotlight on the experimental media arts practice of three First Nations women artists: Jenny Fraser, Maddison Gibbs, and April Phillips. Originally conceived by Gallery Lane Cove’s curator to reflect 2021’s NAIDOC week theme ‘Heal Country!’, the exhibition examines how stories of healing and decolonisation are told through digital platforms. The artists featured employ methods of digital media - projection, animation, video, augmented reality as both passage and platform for critical transformation, speculating the potential for emerging culture, reframing histories and navigate new ways of relating to country and nature. The rich variety of narrative methods and framework reflect the artists’ heritage and distinct visual language.

Jenny Fraser’s family hails from Migunberri Yugambeh Country in the Scenic Rim, the Northern Bundjalung.

Based in NSW Northern Rivers, the artist considers herself a digital native working within a fluid screen-based practice. She was the first Aboriginal woman to have her video art imprinted on a gold record and broadcast into outer space via Hobart and Cape Canaveral, Florida, in the Forever Now project. Maddison Gibbs is a proud Barkindji woman who lives and works between Sydney and Kandos, NSW. Both artist and activist, Maddison Gibbs practice examines dual histories – focusing on stories of past and present Aboriginal societies and spirit. Her work is defined by culturally

feminine intuitive visual poetics. April Phillips is a Wiradjuri-Scottish woman of the Galari peoples based on the south coast of NSW - Yuin country.

Her arts practice is cemented in digital arts; illustration, VR and AR research in which she employs character design as a narrative tool to explore empathy, fun and form.

Like Digital Dreaming, the mixed media exhibition Misconceptions was impacted by the 2021 Covid lockdown and was deferred till July 2022.

Developed by a group of Bellingen artists for presentation at Gallery Lane Cove, the shape of the project altered during the intervening year: the group numbers shrunk, and only the core members remained. The artists experienced further challenges when major flooding occurred in Bellingen in March 2022. Nonetheless, the remaining members preserved.

Artists Jackie Lee, Shelley O’Keefe, Philip Senior and Kathy Taylor became known as the Collective Four. They began working as a collective, strengthening their practice while staying focused on creating a dialogue where art was expressed in the context of everyday experiences and responses to contemporary world issues.

the artists constant use of pencils and drawing throughout her life as a mother, a teacher and an artist. The ‘Velamen’ series consists of over 20 charcoal drawings depicting head coverings of women in different cultures and times. Kathy Taylor will do a short performance drawing around her sculpture of a thousand pencils.

Gain an in-depth understanding of the works and the artists’ practice and their creative challenges over a year of pandemic and floods through a panel discussion on the last day of the exhibition.

Did you know that all Council buildings in Lane Cove are now powered by 100% renewable energy?

Last year Lane Cove Council, along with 24 other participating councils, signed one of the largest renewable energy deals for local government that sees participating councils' retail electricity supplied by three NSW solar farms.

The ‘switch’ came into effect on 1 July 2022 which means that all Council buildings in Lane Cove, including Lane Cove Aquatic Centre, are powered by 100% renewable energy.

This, combined with Council’s other energy savings and own solar power generation projects, decreases Council’s emissions by 73%, a significant advance on our 80% reduction target set for 2036.

Council has budgeted to offset its vehicle fleet emissions, which pre COVID amounted to 7.8% of Council’s emissions.

If these return to pre COVID levels as expected, Council will have achieved an 80% reduction in its emissions from operations. Even without the emissions offset, Council’s emissions from operations will be reduced from 2% to 0.5% of the LGA’s total emissions. This target outperforms the NSW Government’s net zero emissions target by 2050 as well as the Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020–2030, to achieve 35% emissions reduction in New South Wales by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels).

While Council intends to celebrate this significant milestone, we know that as a community there is more work to be done. Data from the Resilient Sydney Platform shows that 56.3% of emissions in Greater Sydney arise from electricity use and that locally, 59% of residential emissions, and 79% of business emissions, come from electricity use.

Council has been looking for opportunities to assist residents in lowering their emissions to help to dramatically decrease emissions across the LGA. With over 60% of residents in Lane Cove living in apartments and 33% renting, many residents have been effectively locked out of benefiting from renewable energy to help offset electricity bills.

GreenPower is especially relevant for people or businesses who rent, those who live in apartments as strata owners or tenants, or those who don’t have adequate roof space

for their own solar energy system. For many residents and businesses, the only way to go renewable is to purchase 100% accredited GreenPower from their electricity retailer.

A GreenPower electricity plan is a simple alternative for residents and businesses unable to install solar panels, and it’s one of the most powerful actions anyone can take for a better environment.

Council has recently joined a Sydney-wide campaign to encourage locals to make the switch. The website getgreenpower.sydney is filled with a host of useful information to encourage everyone from renters to apartment owners and businesses to make the switch in as little as 10 minutes.

This is the only government accredited and audited green energy program so if you’ve been thinking of switching to use one of the 140+ accredited GreenPower generators across NSW this could be a useful first step.

JULY 2022 Our Community Wellbeing and Liveable Lane Cove surveys continue to reinforce that community safety is a top priority for our residents and businesses. While the news cycle can help us feel informed it can also play a part in determining how safe you feel in your day to day life. We recently checked in with NSW Police to see what messages they have for members of the Lane Cove community who might be concerned about safety and it was really positive to hear that there is a difference between perception and reality when it comes to the statistics for our area.

Lane Cove LGA rates well below the NSW state average for incidents of assault, theft, malicious damage to property, drugs and every other major crime category. For example, incidents of assault in Lane Cove throughout 2021 were less than a quarter of the state average and occurred less in Lane Cove than all of its neighbouring LGAs (Ryde, Willoughby, Hunters Hill and North Sydney). Similarly, for incidents of malicious damage to property Lane Cove had a rate of only a third of the state average and again occurred less in Lane Cove than all of its aforementioned neighbouring LGAs. Incidents of theft when looked at broadly are the same, Lane Cove has a lower rate than surrounding LGAs. The takeaway being that Lane Cove is overwhelmingly a safe place to live, work and raise a family. With this being said, we have been reminded to take the simplest of steps to prevent yourself becoming a victim by making it harder for offenders to steal your property. This means ‘lock your windows and doors’ and ‘lock your car’.

On the North Shore close to 60% of vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles occur when the vehicle has been left unlocked by the owner.

We’ve been encouraged to tell you to keep keys in a bedside drawer or similar overnight or when you are at home in general - this makes it harder for criminals if they do break in to your house to also steal your car. For residents that live in unit blocks, it can be safer to not keep items of great value in underground storage cages as these are typically not very secure.

For reporting a crime that does not require immediate police attendance, 131 444 is a handy option. Alternatively you can report crime quickly and easily via the NSW Police Force Community Portal which can be found on the NSW Police website or by Googling NSW Police Community Portal: https://portal.police.nsw.gov.au. You can also call Chatswood Police Station on 9414 8499 to request police attendance.

Council funds a Village Graffiti Reduction Program to remove graffiti from businesses and public areas in the Lane Cove area. Graffiti is removed at no cost to the business however the graffiti must be able to be accessed from a public place (accessible from the street etc). Council’s website explains further how to report graffiti to Council; reporting to other public agencies; as well as options for removal from private property. problems with having missing back teeth?

You can’t see them anyway?”

Dr See says: I get asked about missing back teeth and if it’s a problem all the time! Back teeth often take a back seat to front teeth (excuse the pun). Back teeth are not particularly flashy as they, for the most part, can’t be seen and hence can become neglected.

First and foremost, our front teeth are pretty important for aesthetics and confidence. On the contrary, our back teeth are critical for how the jaws come together and long-term function and stability of our bite (occlusion).

Long term stability of our bite requires stable and consistent contacts of equal intensity. When a back tooth is lost, it disturbs this stability and can be similar to losing a leg from a table. Without this stability, patients often start experiencing: • Pain in teeth and jaws • Tooth wear •T eeth and fillings constantly chipping and breaking •O ther teeth becoming loose and moving, resulting in spaces A significant concern is the shifting of forces to the front teeth. Fundamentally, front teeth were not made to take all the bite forces and this results in severe tooth wear. This is when I often see patients seeking treatment because their front teeth become shorter and their smile starts appearing less aesthetic.

Let’s look at a case that we completed to treat missing back teeth and aesthetics.

Cristiano was referred to us because gradually over the last few years he had lost a lot of back teeth and he could only eat soft foods. We used specalised techniques to precisely analyse his bite and the amount of bone available to plan the appropriate treatment for him.

To achieve the ideal result that was harmonious with his bite and facial aesthetics, we placed dental implants and crowns to replace the missing back teeth and restore stability to his bite.

What can we do to help tackle diabetes?

One of my favourite childhood movies was the remake of author Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder. The Chocolate room, ever-lasting gobstoppers, lickable wallpaper – it was a child’s dream! On reflection, I suspect though that if Willy Wonka was actually a real person, he would have a lot to answer for in regard to his contribution to a condition that affects one in 11 adults worldwide – diabetes.

ith National Diabetes awareness week this month, now is a good time to remind ourselves about this country’s fastest growing chronic condition.

According to Diabetes Australia and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW): -2 80 Australians develop diabetes every day (that’s one person every 5 minutes!)

- 1 in 20 of Australian adults (5%) have some form of diabetes.

- 1 1% of all hospitalisations are diabetes-related and - j ust over 1 in 10 Australian deaths have diabetes as a related cause.

It affects all ethnicities, with Indigenous Australians particularly being more affected – four times higher rates.

But how does diabetes occur? A large part comes down to what we put in our mouths.

When we eat sugar-containing foods, our body produces a hormone called insulin to convert these sugars into glucose which is then used to fuel our body, either immediately as energy, or stored in our liver and muscles for future use.

Put simply, diabetes occurs when insulin is not working, leading to excessive glucose in our blood stream. The problem is either a complete lack of insulin (like in Type 1 diabetes, making up 10% of all diabetes cases), or ineffective/defective insulin (like in Type 2 diabetics, who make up the majority 85% of cases). The other significant group is gestational diabetes of which one in six women will develop during pregnancy, leading to a higher risk of later developing Type 2 diabetes over the next ten years. But whichever the specific cause, the excessive blood glucose levels lead to widespread complications if left undetected and uncontrolled.

The effects are profound. It is the leading cause of preventable blindness in Australia. There are over 4000 limb amputations annually due to diabetic ulcers and wounds. Diabetics are between two or four times more likely to develop heart disease, and heart disease is their leading cause of death. Over 12,000 diabetic Australians are on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant. Clearly, preventing these complications are essential. So what can we do?

Screening and early detection of diabetes is one big step.

Local endocrinologist, Associate Professor Sarah Glastras agrees ‘screening is incredibly important. You often will not know you have diabetes until it is very advanced, and many people will have had the condition for years before they are diagnosed. Many of the complications are picked up at the time of diagnosis. See your GP for a simple blood test.’

In most cases of Type 2 diabetes, there are no symptoms, leading to delayed diagnoses unless routine check-ups are done via your GP. Your GP will also be able to assess your risk of developing diabetes over the next five years via a risk calculator. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include: a family history of diabetes, older age, being overweight/ obese, having high blood pressure, insufficient physical activity, poor diet, and having an ‘apple shape’ body i.e. having more waistline fat.

The best way to self-manage diabetes, whether that be via prevention or treatment once diagnosis is confirmed, is dietary and lifestyle modifications. Eat regular meals spread evenly throughout the day, with a diet lower in fats, particularly saturated fats. Exercising regularly maintains a healthy weight/lose body fat, lowers your blood pressure and reduces your risk of heart disease. Aim for 30 minutes to one hour of daily exercise - any exercise is good that keeps your body moving and your heart rate elevated. An important thing to know is that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. ‘The holy grail is weight reduction’ says Professor Glastras, ‘there is no single diet that is the best one. It’s a discussion with the patient, doctor and dietician as to what is the best diet to suit that person. Patients should move a lot to build up lean muscle mass as this will also reduce central waistline fat’.

Treating patients with diabetes will likely need oral medication and possible injectable forms as well. Many people feel that injections should be avoided at all costs – not true! Type 1 diabetics need injectable insulin from Day One. Injectables are being used increasingly earlier in treating Type 2 diabetics to ward off complications and to assist with weight loss (an area of ever-growing future advancements).

The child in me sometimes wishes there was a Willy Wonka who could invent confectionery that doesn’t contribute to diabetes but still tastes like the real thing. That would certainly be worth a Golden Ticket!

Calm down inflammation with food WORDS: FEDERICA NEGRO

Have you ever sprained your ankle, cut yourself or stung by a bee? The pain, redness, swelling, and heat that it produces are the body’s defence mechanism to fight the acute inflammation and to repair tissue damage.

fried foods, microwave popcorn, certain margarines and vegetable shortenings, packaged cakes and cookies, some pastries, and all processed foods that list partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label.

3. Vegetable and seed oils: Vegetable oils like canola, sunflower oil, palm oil and soybean oils increase inflammation due to the high content of omega-6 fatty acids.

4. Excessive alcohol: A moderate alcohol intake, of red wine in particular, has been shown to provide some health benefits. However, higher amounts can lead to severe problems.

5. Processed meat: Common types of processed meat include sausage, bacon, ham, smoked meat, and beef jerky.

What foods can we eat to reduce inflammation?

1. Berries: Berries contain high amounts of anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants with antiinflammatory effects.

ave you ever heard of chronic inflammation? Chronic inflammation can begin via the same process but can last from several months to years.

2. Eating the rainbow of vegetables: Vegetables contain different pigments, or phytonutrients, which give them their colour. Focusing on eating a variety of colours will increase your intake of anti-inflammatory compounds.

3. Oily fish: Salmon, sardines, mackerel, anchovies are all great examples of oily fish. They are a great source of antiinflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

Symptoms include fatigue, muscle aches, gastrointestinal issues (constipation, diarrhoea, bloating), weight gain, headaches and skin issues.

4. Avocados: Avocados are packed with healthy monounsaturated fats. They also contain anti-inflammatory carotenoids and tocopherols.

Low-grade, chronic inflammation can contribute to several diseases including Alzheimer’s, dementia anxiety and depression, high blood pressure and heart disease, type 2 diabetes, allergies, asthma and skin conditions.

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Extra Virgin Olive oil is one of the healthiest fats you can eat. It’s rich in monounsaturated fats and a staple in the Mediterranean diet, which we know has a numerous health benefits.

There is a substantial amount of evidence to suggest that many foods and nutrients modulate inflammation both acutely and chronically.

6. Dark chocolate: Dark chocolate is delicious and also rich in flavanols, some very powerful antioxidants!

What foods cause inflammation?

1. Sugar and other refined carbohydrates: Table sugar (sucrose), high-fructose corn syrup, brown sugar, barley malt, dextrose, fructose, glucose, malt dextrin and maple syrup.

Foods high in added sugar include candies, chocolate, cookies, cakes, soft drinks and some breakfast cereals.

Refined carbohydrates like white pasta, rice, white bread have most of their fibre removed. Fibre promotes fullness, improves blood sugar control, and feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

2. Artificial trans fats: On ingredient labels, trans fats are often listed as partially hydrogenated oils. Foods that contain trans fats include processed foods like frozen 30 TVO

7. Turmeric: Turmeric has gained a lot of attention in the recent years due to its component, curcumin, a very powerful anti-inflammatory. To make sure you get the best effect out of turmeric, remember to heat it and add some black pepper!

8. Green tea: Tea has antioxidants called catechins, which reduce inflammation. Green tea contains EGCG, the most powerful type of catechin.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT ANTONIO MEDURI

Antonio Meduri’s flower stall saved!

Antonio Meduri is a wellknown local face. One resident has even gone so far to describe him as a Lane Cove “institution”.

High praise, indeed.

It’s no wonder. He’s been a fixture on Burns Bay Road, near Linley Point, selling his market stall flowers, for more than 40 years. The business is a stalwart as his it was his father before him that set up shop on the road.

Antonio is a licensed grower from Flemington Markets and sells his own freshly grown and cut flowers.

Rain, or shine, he is out at Linley Point and boasts the only time he ceased working was for his daughter’s wedding. “I would never get flowers if my husband never drove past Antonio,” joked another resident.

Antonio uses the same parking bay that is occasionally used by Highway Patrol to conduct Random Breath Testing, and in May Highway Patrol moved to permanently stop Antonio for operating at his spot.

Antonio will be returning to Burns Bay Road very soon and will continue serving the Lane Cove community for as long as he can.

Upon discovering the news, the local community swooped in and put pressure on Anthony Roberts MP to back Antonio and secure his spot at Linley Point.

He has also said that if and when he decides to retire, his son will pick up where he left off - continuing the Meduri family tradition of bringing joy to the community.

More than 3,000 people (five per cent of the Lane Cove electorate) signed a petition set up by Mr Roberts.

“This gentleman brings a smile to my face whether I stop to purchase or not,” said one of the petition’s signatories

The Linley Point community also rallied around Tony, as they call him, and told the media that he “is a much-loved character who has been selling flowers in the same location for decades.

“He is a kind member of our community who makes an honest living out of his flower business,” they said.

Growing a winter herb garden in your home

Are you going a little ‘stir crazy’ with this cold weather and feeling a little confined inside? You may feel it's either too cold, too wet or simply just too miserable to be out there getting your hands dirty!

Bring a little of the outside in and also save money on your grocery bill, by growing your own leafy greens inside.

Start by finding a sunny/warm area (such as a north facing window) in your home to set up your growing area. If you do not have this DONT DESPAIR, some simple equipment can provide this artificially.

WHAT YOU NEED • Seedlings…such as lettuce, basil, chives, baby spinach, parsley, spring onions or coriander.

• Potting mix • Containers • Liquid fertiliser

WARMTH & LIGHT A sunny area will provide enough light for your plant to produce energy and grow. Warmth provided inside will increase the temperature of the soil and allow the roots to uptake water (cold winter soil prohibits a plants ability to do this).

LED lamp - Provide artificial light that allows your plants to grow. You can use any form of lighting that uses a LED bulb. This can be a simple desk lamp, floor light or fluorescent tube.

ARTIFICIAL WARMTH AND LIGHT

Plant your seedlings into their pots and place on a waterproof tray. Add the soluble fertiliser to a jug of water (according to directions) and water well. Place the tray of plants on the heat mat and under the lamp.

Add liquid fertiliser to your watering regime every 2-3 weeks.

Once your plants are established, trim and use as needed. This will keep them healthy and encourage new growth. They will continue regrowing for several months, provide you with fresh greens and a little sanity throughout the winter months!

Pissaladière July 14 is Bastille Day and I love to celebrate any occasion with food. My last overseas trip was to France and we enjoyed the traditional French fare: baguettes, fresh berries and cheeses at local markets and also the freshly baked Pissaladière that is almost pizza, but contains more bread. délicieuse!

Pissaladière has an easy dough base smothered in caramelised onions, olives, anchovies and thyme.

Pissaladière wouldn’t be Pissaladière without onions that are cooked in the old-fashioned way. Cheating with a store-bought sugar laden product just won’t cut it. Best thing to do is use your time wisely and make a big batch that can be used on the Pissaladière, and as a condiment that will go with so many meals and last a good couple of weeks. For this recipe, take 12 brown onions, peel and thinly slice - from root to tip - not across the rings (Ed – nice tip, Bern!).

Throw into a large heavy based pot with 150 mls of olive oil. Stir briefly and pop on the lid, letting the onions start to heat through. The steam will help the onions break down and prevent them accidentally burning too early.

The onions need to become tender before they start to brown.

Five minutes should be plenty of time, then lift the lid, and start the stirring process. Add a sprig of thyme and stir every few minutes, just as it’s starting to catch on the base. You want this browning to happen, that's the flavour. This stage takes about 15- 20 minutes. So, stay close (maybe clean out the utensil cupboard or reorganise the pantry), but stay close!

Once the base of the pot has onions sticking to it, add a splash of water to help loosen the caramelisation - a couple of times over five minutes should be plenty. When your onions are a dark golden brown, turn the heat off, put the lid back on, and leave it for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, lift the lid, and you should be able to stir the onions, with the browned base mixing in with the onions. Season with a teaspoon of sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper, cool, and use to top your Pissaladière.

Pissaladière Bread Base 150 gm plain flour (1 cup) 60 gm butter, coarsely chopped 14 gm dried yeast (2 sachet) 1 egg, lightly whisked

Topping

1 cup of caramelised onions 2-3 sprigs of thyme leaves 12 anchovy fillets or roasted capsicum 16 black pitted olives For bread dough: combine flour, butter and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Using your fingertips, rub butter into flour until fine crumbs form, then make a well in the centre. Combine yeast with 2 tbsp lukewarm water, stir to dissolve and add to well along with egg.

Combine dry mixture with yeast mixture to form a dough, then knead until smooth and coming away from the sides of the bowl (add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky).

Cover with a damp tea towel and stand in a warm place until doubled in size (45-60 minutes).

Preheat the oven to 200C. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface, knock back, then knead into a ball.

Lightly flour dough, roll out to a 28cm-diameter circle and place on a lightly greased oven tray. Spread over onion mixture, arrange anchovies (or capsicum if using) on top in a criss-cross pattern and place an olive in the centre of each diamond. Stand in a warm place and prove until slightly risen (10-15 minutes), then bake until golden (20-25 minutes).

by Amanda Lohrey Bonnie Garmus’s debut novel is both entertaining and purposeful - a narrative conduit for both the comic and the tragic. It is a great holiday read written by a woman about a woman but it offers far more than traditional “chick lit”. With deft humour, incisive intelligence and profound empathy it achieves that same rare balance of fun, pain and futility that life does – presenting us with the full gamut of life experience while capturing a moment in history that still resonates for many women today.

It is 1961, and Elizabeth Zott, depressed single mother and unemployed research chemist is unexpectedly recruited to be the host of a cooking show for housewives called “Supper at Six”. She is chosen by the producer for her beauty and style, her nutritious and well-balanced meals and her charismatic no-nonsense directness. She takes the job purely to pay the bills but instead of quietly conforming to the expected stereotype of a female cooking show host, she soon manages to use her program to speak directly to housewives everywhere inspiring change in the way they see themselves, society and their role in it, and the limitations imposed upon them by men. “When women understand chemistry… they understand how things work." She explains that science offers “the real rules that govern the physical world. When women understand these basic concepts, they can begin to see the false limits that have been created for them.”

The novel weaves back and forth, showing Elizabeth’s early brilliance in her scientific field and the injustice she encounters at the hands of her male colleagues. She endures a range of obstacles, and Garmus doesn’t hold back in showing what women have to face. Her persistent challenging of societal assumptions and norms in the face of outrageous sexism and appalling abuse is inspiring. But her true charm is in her unwavering strength and conviction in how to live her life and the example she sets for her daughter. Whether in the field of academia, scientific research or the world of television production, Elizabeth is subjected to outrageous sexism but refuses to submit to male pressure. It is to Garmus’s credit that she manages to create entertaining comedy from the sizeable gap between society’s expectations of Elizabeth and her calm refusal to cooperate but to doggedly pursue her own truth.

Although this is quite a comic novel it is far from light-hearted.

Elizabeth’s life is hard and she has experienced more than her fair share of pain and tragedy in her young life. Even when she finds her soulmate, Calvin Evans, the one man who truly appreciates her mind, she is subjected to malicious gossip and her happiness is short-lived. Through Elizabeth, we also meet a number of other characters whose lives are shaped by the societal pressure associated with the more binary roles of men and women in the sixties.

With Lessons in Chemistry, Garmus has delivered a triumphant debut novel – fast-paced, comic and significant – and a tribute to all the women who disrupted the status quo by defying expectations and refusing to submit to the norm.

Lessons in Chemistry is being adapted into an Apple TV+ series starring Brie Larson.

Can you describe to us the type of artist you are, and the medium you work in?

I am predominantly an abstract painter.

I do also love to draw, especially with charcoal and often incorporate line work and text into my paintings.

When I paint, I feel I am tapping into a creative stream, it’s a mysterious process and one that I love.

What motivates you to ‘create’?

I’m one of those people that just love making, whether it’s a painting, in my garden or writing a piece of music. I find inspiration everywhere, I hope I live to be very old as there’s so much I want to do.

Where did you learn your craft, or is it something you were blessed with?

I feel I learnt most of what I know about painting and sculpture from looking at the work of great artists.

The more I see, the more I feel inspired to work.

Do you find Lane Cove and surrounds a supportive place for artists and creators?

Lane Cove with its natural beauty and quiet spaces is the perfect environment for creative people. Time alone and quiet are essential for me and for most artists.

Do you believe there should be more support for the arts, and if so, how would that manifest?

If art was given as much exposure as sport in the media, people would come to understand it and appreciate it a lot more than they do now. Once you live with art you can’t live without it.

How would we go about seeing your works?

I am represented by Brenda Colahan Fine Art in Charles St, Putney and have an exhibition opening on July 21st.

It’s a beautiful gallery with a diverse selection of art. I’m happy to have my work shown there alongside so many other fantastic artists.

Which artists/creators inspire you?

I am inspired by poets and songwriters. In the visual arts I love Brancusi and the painters Cy Twombly and Ian Mckeever. I also love many Australian artists, there are just too many to name.

Ellie was newly six and her party was awash with friends and their parents. The parents wished they were elsewhere, naturally - especially when it happened. As candles were being blown, from the jumping castle entrance slumped a man who was missing his nose and hair. His head was hanging lifelessly. The scenes that followed were pure chaos.

Parents and children were running and screaming and scrambling to find each other. As Ellie’s father picked her up, he heard seven words whispered into his ear that made the hairs on his neck stand up - “I told mummy I don’t like clowns.”

Ella felt a sweeping sense of peace and tranquillity.

Her friends sat in groups, talking quietly, wearing their best outfits. A person in official robes came into view. Ella took in cool sandstone and marble; beautiful leadlight stained glass...She held a bouquet of roses and felt the soft rustle of her pale chiffon dress.

Floating down the central aisle, her feet barely grazed the floor. In consternation she saw an open casket.

An angelic face, but so young. Shock rocked her. The floor see-sawed. Staring up at her like a reflection on a glassy pond, was her own face.

A distant relative had passed away and my family gathered at the cemetery to say their goodbyes.

Father Sivillo performed the service and the coffin was lowered into the ground.

It was mostly dignified, until my Great Aunt Octavia, became hysterical and attempted to jump into the grave site. It took all my great uncles: Johnny, Nick, Louie, Alfred, Pepe and Tony to hold her back. Then, I heard a voice from the back of the crowd say, “Ahhh, let her jump!”

This slow moving, sexy drama progresses at such a slow pace you could rightly describe that as glacial.

But I’m a fan of the slow burn and Alison Oliver is the standout for me playing the socially awkward Frances.

Based on Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel of the same name, it touches many emotions and as with Normal People before it (on the small screen but after it in book chronology), you will either be enthralled or bored - I loved it. ★★★★★ If this was a car, it would be: VW Beetle - sluggish, solid, reliable and fun.

In 2001, author and aspiring local politician, Michael Peterson, was charged with murder after the suspicious death of his wife Kathleen.

The Staircase doesn’t hold many surprises if you’re already familiar with the original documentary, but this dramatisation does bring a different perspective to the mystery. Colin Firth does a good job at playing the unlikeable, narcissistic Michael Peterson, instead of normally making audiences swoon. ★★★★ If this were a car, it would be: Citroën 2CV - Familiar, slow and drives like a waterbed.

Family Court Murders (ABC iView)

Essex Serpent (Apple TV+)

Walkley award-winning investigative journalist and author, Debi Marshall, seeks to find a resolution for the families of a series of shootings and bombings that killed four people and critically injured dozens in the 1980s. Known as the ‘Family Court Murders’, these brutal attacks were fueled by the bitter custody dispute that ensued between Leonard Warwick and his wife Andrea. This fourpart doco has merit but would have been much improved further being spliced down to just two episodes. ★★★ If this were a car, it would be: A stretched limousine - long, captivating and driven by a proficient chauffeur.

Recently widowed, Cora has relocated to a small village in Essex, where she becomes intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature (known as the Essex Serpent) has returned to the area. The Essex Serpent is an accomplished Gothic romance with captivating performances. This is not a period drama where everything is rosy and colourful - in fact quite the reverse. It is though very endearing, has real depth and wonderful characters. I really enjoyed this show. ★★★★ If this were a car, it would be: 1955 Citroën DS 19 - romantic, creative and very mysterious.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 of ‘The Fur and Feathers Party’ – a modern-day fable for grownups

PUP LAY PANTING in a heap of bedraggled and sweaty fur at the edge of a busy highway. She looked more like a grubby tan-and-silver rug than anything remotely like an Australian silky-haired terrier. Her usual abundance of allure had disappeared faster than a delicious treat after a well-mannered walk. Her long silky mane, normally tumbling down her body like a gossamer waterfall, was now a dry and tangled mess.

The temperature on this late January day had climbed to a sizzling forty-six degrees Centigrade, making this the hottest day in the Hornsby Shire of New South Wales since records began.

Rugged national park covered more than two thirds of the area. Unrelenting green and grey eucalypts lined the road, their roots gasping for the rain that had not paid them a visit in months.

The weather bureau had labelled the fire risk ‘Catastrophic’.

Anyone caught lighting a fire would have a massive fine or end up behind bars.

A hot north wind had whipped up pieces of gravel from the edge of the road, turning them into small gritty tornados.

They irritated the little terrier’s eyes and skin.

The searing temperature had transformed the highway into a massive grey hotplate, suitable for a giant to fry eggs.

Pup could not have picked a worse day or time to be out in the open with no shelter, food or water. Even if she survived the trucks, cars and motorcycles that were belting along the highway, she would not last long in these conditions.

She was just two years old and had always tried to put her best paw forward. Pup was proud of the fact that she never left steaming putrid piles in the middle of a public pavement.

She didn’t have Stick Finding Obsession, Compulsive Yapping Disorder or Ball Throwing Syndrome. She never left her toys around for people to fall over. She tried to keep her barking and growling in check. The only time she’d ever woken David at night was to warn him that a possum was devouring the mangoes he’d left on the kitchen table.

As she lay panting on the boiling hot roadside, Pup wondered why David would have chosen her from all the other dogs at the shelter if he didn’t want her?

She had only been with David for a year. That was a long time in a dog’s life. He had managed to convince her that she was the most important creature in his life. He’d even allowed her to sleep on his bed, and often gave her little treats and toys. It was cruel of him to pretend that she had a happy and safe future if he intended to leave her with his neighbour, Mrs Beanie. The only time Pup had ever been near the old lady was when she had kicked her for smelling the wild roses that grew along the brick fence bordering Mrs Beanie’s front garden.

For a little terrier with a strong sense of smell, it wasn’t pleasant inhaling the stale musty smell coming from the old lady’s clothes. Her garden was overgrown with weeds, and Pup wondered why a person, who clearly never cared for her flowers and shrubs, would be annoyed if she left a deposit there.

The heat was melting parts of the roadway. Burning hot bitumen stuck to the pads of Pup’s silky-haired feet, but she was too sad to notice. Her joyful, adventurous, and playful nature had vanished.

If Pup had known the important role she was destined to play in improving the lives of the birds and animals, she would not want to give up her life so easily. She’d be so excited she would somersault down the road like tumbleweed in the desert. Every animal, bird and fish would know who she was, and be grateful to her. But how could this little terrier have known what was just around the corner? Dogs don’t go to fortune-tellers.

In this moment the little silky-haired terrier no longer cared that dogs went weak at the paws when they saw her voluptuous tan-and-silver fur, her soft and pointy inquisitive ears, and warm brown expressive eyes.

Pup could only think of one thing: how could David just abandon her?

She drifted into a daydream, her mind re-living the events of just a few hours earlier that had changed her life forever.

ardens, public or private, are an important part of many people’s lives. Research shows that gardening is a very healthy activity as it promotes exercise, relaxation, and a healthy dose of vitamin D. Judging by the cost of fresh food in recent weeks, growing your fruit and veggies is good for one’s pocket too!

Throughout May and June, gardens and gardening featured heavily within Sydney Community Services (SCS) activity calendars.

On the 16th of June, our seniors enjoyed a much-anticipated 2022 Seniors Festival event. Over 130 seniors joined us for a garden party, including morning tea and music while connecting with local social groups, special interest groups and support services. Initially scheduled in April as part of the NSW Seniors Festival, the event was postponed due to weeks of severe weather. On the day the Henley Green Community Garden was glorious in the sun, and the Country Women’s Association provided the fluffiest and most delicious of scones. The event was a collaboration between Hunter’s Hill Council, City of Ryde, Lane Cove Council, Sydney Community Services, Stryder, Happy Hens Social Enterprise, and Presbyterian Aged Care: North Ryde Community Aid. The overwhelming feedback on the day was that the Henley Garden Party becomes an annual event!

Community gardens provide the joys and benefits of gardening not only for the green thumbs

but for the rest of us too. The SCS Gardening Team supports several community gardens attached to the local social housing complexes in the Hunters Hill and Gladesville areas.

Our Team assists the gardeners by sourcing grants, providing gardening workshops, and lending a helping hand throughout the year. Linda Thompson, one of our Gardening Coordinators, led a successful collaboration between Link Wentworth Community Housing, Royal Botanic Gardens Community Greening, and SCS which saw our gardeners and a team of volunteers replace old and worn garden beds with a set of new self-watering ones.

David (one of our gardeners) summed it perfectly by saying, “They’re beauties; they’re real winners. The plants look fantastic in their new home.”

At Blandville Court Social Housing, staff from the Royal Botanic Gardens, supported by St George Community Housing and SCS, delivered an Autumn Winter Gardening Workshop for the Blandville Court Community Housing Gardeners. For many residents, that was the first group activity they were able to enjoy since the beginning of the pandemic. Community gardens enhance the environment in each complex; they are well cared for by the residents, with the whole community benefiting from their labour of love.

Gardening is a very suitable pandemic activity; being outdoors is one of the better infection

prevention strategies. As lockdowns went into effect, reports emerged of a global gardening boom, with plants, flowers, vegetables, and herbs sprouting in backyards and on balconies worldwide. If you don’t have your own garden but would like to try gardening, there are some fantastic community gardens in the Local Government Areas, including: Hughes Park Community Garden, which is member-run and supported by the Lane Cove Council Henley Green Community Garden, a beautiful community space always open to everyone and sponsored by the Hunters Hill Council. Remember to look out for their famous outdoor Growers and Artisan Market!

The Habitat, which provides native plants to local Bushcare sites and schools in small biodiverse lots to help create habitat havens around our community is supported by the City of Ryde Council.

The SCS Gardening Team is always on the lookout for volunteers.

We work year-round to make gardens enjoyable and safe places. Many people cannot fully or safely access their gardens without help, so our Gardening Team, supported by volunteers, works its magic to get people back in their gardens. To find out more, please get in touch with yhughes@sydneycs.org.

The Hub provides a safe, warm and engaging environment for people over 65 years who find they would like to spend more time with other seniors! The Hub operates Monday to Friday and offers tailored programs to seniors whilst providing a much-needed break and peace of mind for the family carer(s).

Our day programs are a combination of bus outings, picnics, centre based activities and more. Transport can be provided to and from home, in addition to morning and afternoon tea and two-course lunch (catering for all dietary requirements). The Hub takes place in a cosy, homelike cottage with a sunny garden in a leafy Hunters Hill.

The NSW Budget at work for Lane Cove.

Community feedback is essential for developing plans for the work we do as a Council and to help ensure that all of our efforts as an organisation are informed by what’s needed and important to you.

The NSW Budget for 2022-23 will see several improvements to the roads and transport infrastructure.

Education and Health.

The community’s views helped shape all of Council’s integrated documents, including our 10-year Plan, 4-year Delivery Program and 1-year Operational Plan.

Drop-in sessions at Town Hall, an online consultation portal, and formal submissions received through a public exhibition period were ways in which we encouraged participation throughout Hunters Hill.

We also conducted an independent telephone survey of 400 residents to measure your priorities and levels of satisfaction with our Council.

It was encouraging to hear through the survey that 97 per cent of residents rate their quality of life as good to excellent.

And 90 per cent of residents agree or strongly agree that ‘people in Hunters Hill are generally proud of their area’.

You also told us through the survey that footpaths, roads and waste services are the most important services that Council delivers.

The condition of roads, footpaths and traffic congestion was also an area you told us needs improving.

Other areas you said we need to focus on included: •M anaging development and the Development Application (DA) process.

• Managing the heritage/character of the area.

• Maintaining parks and playgrounds.

• Improving financial sustainability.

• Improving library services.

• Protecting the natural environment.

It was very encouraging to find through the survey that our community was highly satisfied with the cleanliness of our local government area and the graffiti-free spaces.

Managing wharves and boat ramps, maintaining parks and recreation areas and restoring natural bushland were also things you felt we do well.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback, not only through the survey but in participating in our other consultation methods.

Your views are appreciated and valued.

In particular to the Lane Cove Electorate I have managed to secure funding from the NSW Government to support Major works by the Department of Education at Artarmon Public School, Macquarie Park Education Campus and Stage 1 of the St Leonards Education Precinct. It is exciting to see almost $35 Million provided by the NSW Government be used to support the Education of so many Lane Cove residents and students abroad.

Thanks to a $10.7 Million commitment in this year’s budget, Greenwich Point Wharf will be receiving a comprehensive upgrade. The facilities at this new wharf will be like no other, the installation of a lift from wharf to street level will greatly aid in the safety of the elderly and disabled and the new pontoon will provide better efficiency and safety for ferries in picking up and dropping off passengers.

As many of you would agree, the health sector within NSW has been under the most pressure we have seen in decades.

The tremendous work loads the nurses, doctors and health care workers have been under during the pandemic has taken a toll on the equipment and facilities of many hospitals as well as their staff. To continue to improve the working conditions that our health care workers operate in $17 Million has been provided to the Royal North Shore Hospital to assist with cyclical maintenance of their facilities.

Additionally, the budget also included $408 Million to fasttrack elective surgeries for all patients across NSW. This investment will see an additional 267 staff and the opening of extra operating theatres during the evenings and weekends.

One of the hidden consequences of the Pandemic was the increase of waiting times for these surgeries as hospitals had to pivot towards COVID care and the NSW Government is working hard to rectify this situation and get patients the treatment they need as quickly as possible.

Collaboration, Coordination and Community In the four weeks since the election, my team and I have hit the ground running, meeting constituents, setting up our new electoral office, and building relationships with local, state and federal representatives who will work with us towards better outcomes for our community.

When I embarked on this campaign to get an Independent into the seat here in North Sydney, I promised to take on the big issues that our community cared deeply about. Issues like climate change; integrity in federal politics; a revitalised, forward-focused economy; support for our families and communities; and equality and respect for all.

As a parliamentarian, I know I don’t have all the answers. But this was never about me — it’s about what we can achieve together.

My role as the Independent Federal Member of North Sydney can be characterised by three “C”s: Collaboration, Coordination, and Community. The issues we face as a community are complex and have been building for a long time. There is no silver bullet. We need to work openly and constructively with experts, industry, our community and others across Australia to develop long-term, sustainable solutions.

As we move towards the 47th Parliament of Australia, I am looking forward to a new way of doing politics: one where reason and consensus is valued over political egos. In this context, the discussions I’ve had with my fellow crossbenchers and members of the Albanese Government have been very positive so far.

I am heartened by the Government’s plan to improve parliamentary procedures, including by allocating more question time to crossbench MPs to facilitate robust discussion and debate.

I have had good discussions with Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen to reconfirm Labor’s pledge of a community battery in Cammeray; with Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney about how North Sydney can help close the gap; and with Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek about our green spaces.

And I have been working with my fellow Independents to push for a new parliamentary code of conduct to stop bullying and sexual harassment, and bring Parliament House in line with modern workplaces across Australia.

There’s a lot of work to do. But fortunately, as a communitybased electoral office, there are a lot of us to do the work.

My door (and my inbox) is always open and I look forward to hearing more from you and working with you towards the progress we want to see in the months and years to come.
