EDITOR'S NOTE For many, life is settling back into its familiar routine. The kids have started school; suitcases have been packed in storage after time away; we’re allowing extra time for that commute now that most have returned to work; and TVO has hit the streets again after a short break, ready for another year.

In our first issue for 2018, we bring you more news about what is happening within our community.

With many local students gearing up to start university for the first time, this month’s feature discusses how completing a degree stacks up considering the increasing levels of HECS debt; supply exceeding demand in some industries with more students at university than before; graduate pay scales; and the changing nature of employment as contract work becomes more prevalent.

Next month, we will discuss the St Leonards South Residential project. It is proposed that this large-scale development will deliver an additional 2400 new apartments, and it has generated considerable comment with residents concerned about the impact that it will have on the community.

Is university worth it?

It is said that Australia is a nation of graduates, with more and more people opting for tertiary education each year. As many local students prepare to start university this year, we look at whether a university degree is translating to better career opportunities. By Madeleine Curby.

Australia has one of the highest university enrolment rates in the world.

Over 1.4 million students were studying in 2015 - up from 1.3 million in 2014 - as reported in University Australia’s 2017 data report.

And it is expected that on average, 70 percent of young people living in Australia will graduate from tertiary education based on 2015 patterns of graduation, as reported by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 2017 Education at a Glance report. Of these students, only 39 percent are Australian residents (which is below the OECD average of 49 percent).

The report also found that 40 percent of young adults under 30 are expected to enter the labour force for the first time with a tertiary education.

So what are people studying and is this translating to greater employment prospects and higher salaries?

Popular subjects Currently the most popular university courses Australia-wide are STEM related (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), while the least popular are journalism and social sciences.

This trend is reflected in both university entry levels and pay, with the more popular courses requiring higher ATARs and earning higher salaries.

But not all universities have the same requirements, which is pushing certain course entry levels up, while others spiral downwards.

For example, The University of Sydney is renowned for being a prestigious and popular university, which has driven the ATAR requirements for most courses up.

To study a Bachelor of Commerce here in 2018, the required ATAR was 95. However, the same course at the University of Newcastle had an ATAR of 65.75.

In effect, this has meant that people who never had the opportunity to attend university before are now able to do so if they enrol at a smaller, less prestigious university.

In this system, universities are partly responsible for churning out graduates, with supply potentially exceeding demand.

Too many graduates for too few jobs?

Adzuna, an Australia-wide job hunting platform, released its 2017 report showing that 22 graduates will compete for each graduate job vacancy. In NSW, this number was 20 to one.

Data released in September last year by the Australian government found that only 71 percent of graduates secure a job of some sort straight out of university, while 15 percent were still unemployed four years after graduating.

The report also found that of those employed full-time, 30.9 percent were unhappy as they were unable to find suitable jobs in their area of expertise.

Interestingly, the OECD report found that university graduates and those with vocational training (including apprenticeships) actually had similar employment rates; 84 percent for tertiary-educated adults and 74 percent for vocational-educated adults.

The highest graduation rates for tertiary-educated students were from STEM degrees, whilst students in arts and humanities, social science and journalism experienced the lowest employment rates.

Does a university degree mean more opportunities and better pay?

For the most part, yes, but there are a few different factors in play.

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) reports that the median annual income of a Vocational Education & Training (VET) graduate working full-time is $56,000.

However, according to the Federal Government’s latest student survey published on its Quality Indicators in Learning and Teaching website (QILT), the median graduate salary for those with a university degree is also $56,000.

Yet, VET graduates don’t have the same level of HECS debt.

For university graduates, increases in salary were seen three years after graduation when the median salary rose to $68,700.

Medicine is considered one of the bestpaying jobs for graduates, with an average salary three years after course completion of $100,000. The only other career to beat this was dentistry with a median salary of $120,000.

Next are engineering graduates earning $75,900; lawyers earning $75,000; and pharmacists earning $72,800.

Those who study medicine are also most likely to get a job after graduation with almost 98 percent of graduated doctors gaining employment. The employment rate for pharmacy also sits around 97.1 percent.

However, for those who study creative arts, the news is not so great. While the employment rate has significantly increased from 49.2 percent in 2013 to 80.1 percent in 2016, it is still nearly 20 percent lower for art graduates than medical graduates.

The changing nature of employment Another factor for university graduates to consider is the increase in part-time and contract work.

For the past 12-24 months, I have worked in contract roles and I have many friends and colleagues in the same situation.

While there are some perks, there is also a huge element of pressure; of always being ‘on’; ready to take any phone call; recite your experience; and to have your resume always up-to-date and ready to send.

You also miss out on opportunities to get more involved with a workplace, expand your skill set and work within a team in a more cohesive and rounded way.

SEEK found that the advertising, arts and media industry saw a nine percent year-on-year increase for contract/ temp roles; whereas the Government and Defence industries had a 56 percent increase in contract/temp roles.

What about HECS debt?

Students can opt to pay their degree upfront or use the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS).

HECS-help is a loan scheme to help eligible Commonwealth supported students pay their student contribution amounts through a loan. The debt is not subject to tax, however, it is subject to indexation which is applied at the end of every financial year.

Universities can set their own tuition fee, which means that the average price of completing a degree can vary wildly.

The table below is based on an analysis

by Andrew Norton, a higher education policy analyst at the Grattan Institute.

While this table is a good starting point, many people I have spoken to who have completed an arts, nursing or law degree all paid a lot more than the table shows.

Does a university degree provide the pathway to success?

I spent close to $40,000 to get my Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts degree from Macquarie University.

A word of advice ALEXANDER NEWHALL

For Alex, a three-year Bachelor of Business & Sports Management degree from the International College of Management (ICMS) cost nearly $70,000.

“Attending university was worth it, but I do question how much it cost and now think a private college wasn’t worth the money,” says Alex.

Post-graduation, Alex said it was extremely difficult to get a job, and he chose to remain working in a casual role while saving money to go travelling.

“About two years after graduation, I started searching for entry-level business administration roles in the sports industry. It was next to impossible as all the graduate roles I saw required 1 -2 years’ experience, yet no-one is willing to train you to get this experience.

“I applied for many jobs over an eight-month period and eventually had to look outside my expected career path to break into the industry.”

Alex is now employed full-time, but not in the sports industry.

Another graduate from Macquarie University, Tom, explained that his Bachelor of Electronic Engineering cost $32,000, not to mention the cost of

While I was studying at university, I went to see an academic advisor, but accidentally booked a careers advisor instead. While they weren’t able to advise me on my degree, they did set up an interview with a content marketing agency.

It was a case of right time, right place and I went on to intern at the agency for a few months while studying and working part-time on the weekends.

After four months, I applied and successfully got a position as a Junior Digital Producer. I now work full-time as a Digital Editor/ Content Coordinator, which would not have been possible without my degree.

My advice for all those studying would be to get an internship. While my degree lay the foundations, interning proved that I had absorbed the necessary skills and knowledge my job required. It also gave me credentials of real-world experience to bring to an interview — not just a piece of a paper.

So, is university worth it? I would say yes - but only if you can validate what you have learned with experience.

For me, it opened up doors that I didn’t even know existed and has led me down a path which has turned into a career. textbooks and the lost opportunity costs of not being able to work full-time.

“University was worth the cost as it opened up a range of employment options that would not otherwise be available.”

Has it paved his way to success? It would seem so. Tom found it easy to find a job post-graduating and he is now working full-time for a highly-regarded engineering firm. █

Council responds to draft 20-year plan Lane Cove Council has recently given feedback on the Greater Sydney Commission’s Revised Draft North District Plan, which has been developed to provide a 20-year vision for each of the Greater Sydney Districts.

In March 2017, Council submitted a response to the initial North District Plan, expressing basic support and some concerns. The Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) revised the plan and recently sought submissions on this revision.

The plan included postponing the setting of a 20-year residential target for Lane Cove. This was welcomed by Council and it requested that the GSC acknowledge the current ‘heavy lifting’ being undertaken by the community, and that there is limited capacity for future dwelling construction in Lane Cove.

Over the past five years, Lane Cove has facilitated significant residential development, exceeding the dwelling growth targets set by the State Government.

The capacity within the current LEP is approximately 4,300 dwellings.

Since 2010, Council has approved 3,919 additional dwellings. In addition, a current DA at St Leonards for 458 apartments, would if approved, see this increase to 4,377.

Council has also undertaken planning for St Leonards South, which will deliver an additional 2,400 dwellings.

Council also supported the elevated prominence of transport infrastructure in the Revised Plan, raising particular concern around the need to address the congestion of local through traffic and

supporting the current and planned major road and rail upgrades.

Council also agreed with the continued direction to “protect and manage” commercial and industrial land from rezoning to residential use, including Lane Cove West and St Leonards. Future economic and job growth depends upon employment land being available in the long-term.

In light of the challenges associated with providing quality open space in urban areas, Council expects the State Government to recognise its innovative open space projects.

These projects have included a land swap in the Mowbray high-density precinct that will result in a 270% increase in open space for residents; the targeted new high-rise mixed-use development in St Leonards which will fund a new 5,000m2 St Leonards Plaza over the rail line; and the public carpark on Rosenthal Avenue being converted to a public park plus supermarket.

The Draft Plan also outlined the importance of providing greater opportunities “to grow jobs, housing and infrastructure” in St Leonards.

The State Government is working with Lane Cove and surrounding Councils, together with agencies such as Transport for NSW and Health NSW, to develop an integrated plan for the St Leonards/ Crows Nest Station Precinct.

As a ‘Collaboration Area’, St Leonards will be given greater emphasis, with all levels of government working together with the community and business to ensure its growth.

Within its feedback, Council also asked for greater flexibility in the proposed Affordable Rental Housing target, which recognises the need to provide housing for ‘key workers’ within a 30-minute journey to work. To date, there has been key worker housing introduced in many new local developments, including Pacific Highway, St Leonards, Epping Road, and Lane Cove West.

Financial assistance to community groups

Community based organisations providing services to people in Lane Cove can now make applications for financial assistance in 2018/19.

Applications must address any one or number of social, community and cultural needs covering areas including aged; disability; children; youth; arts; cultural; leisure; recreation; community development, and support programs.

An age-friendly Lane Cove As a member of the World Health Organisation’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, Lane Cove Council has prepared a second strategy to continue its commitment to making Lane Cove a good place for older people to live, work and visit.

The Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove was developed following community consultation and Council is now inviting comments on the draft plan.

The lights flickered as I ran down the hospital corridor, patients lying in hospital beds were being evacuated, people screaming with fright. I couldn’t breathe, the air was musty and thick with poison gases. I thrusted myself through all the doors but the corridor seemed to be never ending.

My mum fell and as she did my heart broke. If I stopped to help her up I would be engulfed in flames, but if I didn’t my mother would burn to the point of death and guilt would ride my shoulders until the day I was to die.

It was time to pull it out – the old violin. My daughter had never been interested.

“Everybody else is learning an instrument,” Anna wheedled.

“Are you sure?” I said, secretly pleased.

“Please, Mum.” I fingered Great Aunt’s Victory medal.

The battered instrument, strings akimbo, had been laid to rest with the medal for many years. The chance to realise a career as a violinist had been taken from my Great Aunt. The story was of a musical talent lost to war.

I’d lost my fight to learn.

“Waste of money,” said my Dad. “Alright.” It was Anna’s turn to try.

The Dragon was hungry, he found himself ready to stalk his prey.

Night had fallen.

He pushed himself over the cliff pulling his great wings back while falling swiftly and silently into the night, the cold air from his descent rushing over his body. Slowly he extended his wings as he neared the ground "this is where I will find dinner" and with this the dragon expelled a flame so bright that it lit the ground like magnesium, and there they were, a group of beasts so big, all frozen with fear.

The dragon knew that dinner was moments away.

That’s it. Done. I watch as the last bubbles fall away from me and rush towards the freedom of the surface.

With them go my final breath and my last connection to the world above. I wish I were a bubble. I wish I were going somewhere. I feel so alive, in tune and clear. No thoughts, no expectations, no anxiety. The water embraces me, the ultimate womb, from which there is no birth. Soon I’ll crave those bubbles, but I have a few seconds yet. My heartbeat rings ever louder in my ears - a rhythm divine, unto oblivion.

The bottle just lay on the beach. It had a greyish tinge from being bounced about in the ocean.

A written note had been pressed inside.

Brett knew of the message in bottles scenario, but assumed it was mythical.

Yet, here he stood in the windswept rain, nervously holding this abandoned bottle. Curiosity overtook him. The note needed closer inspection. It had obviously been written for a reason.

Removing it from the tight spout proved difficult, but Brett succeeded.

The neatly written message made him smile. It read: “Do the right thing.

Please put me in the yellow recycling bin.”

The more busy, stressed and overwhelmed us humans become, the more relevance Yoga has. It’s no surprise that this ancient practice that is several thousands years old, is more popular now than ever.

Our fast-paced world of huge expectations, ambition, productivity, technology and more-more-more feels overwhelming. It’s no wonder that we all need to slow down.

Purely physical?

Many people come to Yoga expecting just a physical practice.

Many people are surprised to learn that Yoga was originally created by men, for men. Ironic, when you think that in the western Yoga world, there appears to be a gender bias towards women in class.

Us women have had to literally muscle our way onto our Yoga mats over the past hundred or so years. Since then much Yoga has been modified to suit womens’ bodies and systems.

Yes, men do Yoga. Very well.

Like all humans, men are stressed out, tired, and have postural and physical issues. They too want their whole system (physical AND mental/emotional) to function optimally.

You should explore the right Yoga style for YOU, and don’t be afraid for your Yoga practice (and style) to change. Try a few styles on - you’ll know what fits best.

Some popular Yoga styles include: ● HATHA:

Drawing from many different styles of Yoga, the beauty of Hatha is you’re not stuck in a set format. The teacher will tailor the class according to the needs of the students. It can be soft and gentle, and it can be really challenging. Most humans can do Hatha Yoga.

● VINYASA (OR ‘FLOW’):

A stronger, more challenging practice which moves along with the breath. Not a great entry level class.

● RESTORATIVE:

There’s no ‘doing’ in Restorative. We deeply relax by manipulating the nervous system, relying on the support of many Yoga props, and stillness. The subtle benefits are remarkable.

● YIN:

Deep muscle and facia stretches, which can be quite challenging though quite rewarding too. Based on Chinese meridian lines and their associated organs.

● IYENGAR:

A very therapeutic, healing practice with a focus on correct alignment, and often the use of Yoga props to aid that alignment.

● ASHTANGA:

This challenging, strong practice includes some Vinyasa elements, and is a set sequence.

Also, the veneers will have a finite lifespan. I usually tell my patients that they should expect around 20 years before they will need to be redone. Some need attention such as aromatherapy, massage and yoga may be recommended.

Herbal medicine however, provides some of the best treatment options for stress and fatigue and there are several herb classes that can assist. These include herbal adaptogens, nervines and adrenal restoratives, and all have a role to play. Possibly my favourites are the herbal adaptogens which are used to help improve the body’s adaptability to physical and psychological stimuli and stressors, and to help increase stamina and endurance and resistance to illness.

Adaptogens exert a balancing effect on various body systems, including immune, nervous and cardiovascular systems, and in providing support for the adrenal glands, can help the body deal more effectively with stress, anxiety and fatigue. The adrenals help us respond to and rebound from stress, and when they become

sooner, others don’t - it comes down to individual and unique factors.

However, in order to make a choice, and like any decision, these disadvantages must be played against the positive outcomes that come with successful porcelain veneer treatment. This is a very personal thing, and in my practice, is driven only by my patients.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? As a dental restorative material, nothing beats the aesthetics of porcelain.

Added to that, when bonded to enamel, the result is extremely strong and durable. Porcelain veneers do not discolour over time as natural teeth do, and modern porcelains are engineered to wear at the same rate as natural teeth. overwhelmed, various systems in the body start to break down.

Adaptogens are sometimes called a ‘whole body tonic’.

Vertigo

VESTIBULAR NEURONITIS

‘Around and around and around we go.’

We first explored this topic in 2015, but after seeing a few sufferers over the past weeks, it might put another spin on things for TVO’s newer readers.

WHAT IS VERTIGO? Vertigo is a pestilential condition that makes sufferers experience a nauseating, circular, spinning, rotary unsteadiness and dizzy sensation. When severe, there may be sweating, pallor, nausea and vomiting.

Take your pick of the descriptors - vertigo is an illusion of motion.

This sensation is generated by the brain and the balance/ hearing complex of the inner ear. It is persistent and may settle with absolute stillness of the head. It may last from hours, to days, to weeks, to years, depending on the cause. Some 80 – 85% of vertigo is generated in the balance organ of the inner ear – the semicircular canals and the utricle.

Their dysfunction is transmitted to the brain via the eighth cranial nerve.

Vertigo can be distinguished from simple dizziness and fainting by those that experience these conditions. The cervical spine just below the head can cause some of these symptoms.

Even the smallest movement of the head can set vertigo off, unlike dizziness Medical and fainting. Vertigo’s persistence and Dr Tim David recurrence may bring on fatigue and lethargy, nausea and vomiting. Not a keeper, as young people say today.

HEAD INJURY

There are several causes of vertigo as a symptomatic outcome - that is a felt change. The first is head injury.

The balance organ of the inner ear is disturbed by the force of the injury and expresses that as vertigo or dizziness.

Treatment is usually short term as it generally settles over a few days with rest, anti-nauseants and time.

This is a very nasty one. As the name suggests, part of the eighth cranial or vestibular nerve and its sensors in the semicircular canals and utricle become inflamed, usually on one side only. ‘Vestibular’ refers to the inner ear mechanism; ‘neuron’ refers to the nerve itself; and ‘itis’ refers to the inflammation.

Medicine has another name – labyrinthitis – for the same process. Debilitating, persistent, and usually long lasting, it is thought to be a viral attack on the balance nerve. Treatment is to treat the symptoms with medication, all the while hoping that the condition will self-heal.

What are the Semicircular canals and Utricle?

The semicircular canals are three tube-like structures in the inner ear. They are at right angles to each other. Tiny hairs line the canals which are filled with a fluid - endolymph.

The fluid moves with head movement and so signals position to the brain in a threedimensional way.

The utricle, along with the saccule, are two baglike structures below the semicircular canals. The utricle holds a tiny cup full of calcium carbonate crystalline stones, which are covered by a layer of mucus-like substance.

The escape of one of these stones which gets stuck in a semicircular canal leads to

the next condition – Benign Positional Vertigo.

BENIGN POSITIONAL VERTIGO This is indeed ‘benign’ and ‘positional’. Apart from some neck conditions, this is caused by one of those calcium carbonate crystals or local debris escaping the mucus layer covering the utricle and entering the end of a semicircular canal.

Major disturbance of balance follows. Apart from various anti-nauseants, some head manoeuvres such as the Hallpike and Epley often solve this.

MENIERE’S DISEASE Another shocker from a symptom perspective. Apart from vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus (or ringing in the ear) also accompany this cause.

It’s nasty and a bit mysterious.

It is thought that endolymph fluid builds up pressure, causing the symptoms. There is specific treatment.

Medicine is endlessly fascinating, as is our body, mind and spirit. The more we know, the less we seem to really know. Thousands of conditions are out there.

Karen creates luxe, casual, timeless designs, that are either hand dyed or hand illustrated.

Karen Tam At the market, I will be offering hand dyed and printed scarves, wraps and sarongs, as well as homewares such as cushion covers, tea towels and napery.

As a nature lover, all my products are either hand dyed by me from natural and botanical ingredients, or hand illustrated designs which are either screen printed or digitally printed.

I am conscientious about healthy textile practices, using techniques that minimise pollution. I use either natural ingredients, or water-based printing inks on natural fibres such as silk, cotton, wool or linen. As the earth becomes more and more polluted, it is really important to me to ensure that whatever I produce treads lightly on our earth and leaves a small footprint.

Celebrate emerging creative talent

All my work is original and hand stitched by me and features bold and modern floral motifs. As an artist and designer, my aim is to offer people a way to create embroidery by way of uncomplicated lessons and kits. I believe that anyone can learn this ancient craft and the creative and mental health benefits are enormous.

I was taught informally by my grandmother and aunts and turned my passion into a business when I discovered a great interest from others to learn this craft and also to have access to easy instructions and good quality, interesting patterns.

Olivia Reily Storytelling is a major part of my practice, and I work predominantly in illustration.

I am often inspired by folk art and tales, as well as the beauty of nature.

I will have a wide range of illustrated paper goods such as cards and stickers on sale, together with hand screen printed t-shirts and ceramics.

I also make jewellery out of translucent polymer clay.

Each piece is unique, hand painted and filled with a variety of precious things like gold leaf, dried flowers, or even green tea.

Millie makes children’s clothes ranging in size from newborn to around 3 years. Each piece is individual, as is each child!

Millie Stephen My aim is to make beautiful, unique and practical clothes for babies and young children, while contributing to a culture of sustainable fashion by using vintage and recycled fabric, and focusing on quality to ensure my pieces will last and be cherished.

I first fell in love with sewing watching my grandmother transform my visions for imagined dresses into reality.

After the birth of my daughter, it was a natural creative expression for me to start making her clothes. It began with a tiny hat, and I continued to develop different patterns inspired by her emerging character, together with fabulous fabrics.

Olivia’s products appeal to young children and adults alike, due to their harmonious colours and whimsical style.

Nat Panzarino I will be selling a children’s picture book entitled ‘Pointy Pembleton Visits the Dog Park’.

I will also be selling a number of original Pointy Pembleton watercolour illustrations and screen prints.

Fer Wicker and I came to the idea of a children’s picture book when looking for unique ways to fundraise for Greyhound Rescue, where we both volunteer. My background is as a teacher of Visual Arts and English, whereas Fer's expertise is as an artist and graphic designer, so it was a perfect fit for us to write and illustrate the book together.

The book has sold over 1000 copies so far. It’s perfect for kids aged 3-8 and is a wonderful story about diversity and acceptance.

Life's Rich Pattern This holiday season we've just finished an outdoor renovation and so decided to have a staycation to enjoy it.

By Liz Foster In any case, it's an obvious choice, as the benefits to all of staying in Sydney are innumerable. Lack of traffic, for one.

Whilst supine on your couch, novel in one hand and a chilled glass of Sav Blanc in the other, think of the hordes of travellers heading south/north, making great time until confronting the inevitable roadworks/ breakdown/ single lane bottle neck/ learner driver accumulating his/her hours.

Avoiding air travel is even better.

No back-to-back queues to the airport producing nail biting nerves whilst contemplating missing your flight. No stripping down to your underwear for the international travel detectors. No lengthy flight delays due to errant volcano eruptions and ash cloud plumes.

You can hang around the house/ garden all day in your shorts (or swimmers if you're lucky enough to have a pool), joining the great unwashed and living off beans on toast and the dry remnants of a very old Christmas ham.

All parental duties involving education and nutrition are suspended (although their use as a taxi service does increase dramatically at this time of year). It's OK to read more than one novel in a week, have multiple consecutive late nights and go to bed before the children.

The best part of our staycation is that our Wi-Fi connection is faulty. The patchy connection is no problem for my husband and I with mobile data packages, but yes, it is a problem for my teenage children.

They've been forced back to the Dark Ages of reading books. This has the added dual benefit of creating enormous household peace and quiet whilst being able to engage with them at normal decibels since headphone use is not required.

Foodfaith and Bagshare receive grants The Sustainability Small Grants Program assists the development of a range of initiatives that have direct and practical benefit to a sustainable Lane Cove community.

Organisations and community groups can apply for a grant of up to $5,000. In the latest round of funding, two projects were allocated funding on the basis that they were deemed to have direct and positive community based outcomes and environmental benefits.

This included FoodFaith, to enable the purchase of gardening tools and to cover the cost of a plumber (to the value of $4,652); and the Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group, to purchase a sewing machine and consumables to make reusable bags (to the value of $1,000).

Council deemed that these initiatives had direct and positive community-based outcomes and long-term environmental benefits. The FoodFaith community garden provides an important cultural, community and multifaith attraction for residents; and the Bagshare program supports Council’s goal of reducing single-use plastic bags in the community.

Round 15 of the program will be advertised in February 2018, with $15,000 available in the budget for this financial year.

Problems with staycations, however, have been identified by experts; if you leave home you leave your comfort zone, meaning you're missing one of the pillars of brain health - to challenge yourself. It's easy to over-focus on mundane everyday household tasks. Disconnection from work is also considered harder when at home (just think about that for a minute!)

My answer to these concerns is quite simple. Swap houses with your neighbour and don't ask for their Wi-Fi code. It's not a problem to nip home if you forget something and I guarantee you'll never be tempted to do their washing or housework.

The ‘Distracted’ road safety campaign comes with a hard-hitting message for all vehicle users, and targets the dangerous use of mobile phones while driving.

You cannot hold your phone in any way while driving. If you want to

use your device, you must be parked out of the line of traffic.

I HOPE, LIKE ME, YOU ENJOYED A WONDERFUL FESTIVE SEASON.

I sometimes try to explain to overseas hoteliers and tour companies what Christmas and the New Year is like for us, and how it compares to theirs.

Our festive season is the culmination of so much.

The school year finishes and there are concerts to attend and reports to write (and read). Everyone tries to finish projects so that the New Year is begun with a clean slate. And because it is also our summer holiday season, those who are going away have to deal with packing the suitcase as well as buying Christmas presents, entertaining the rellies and getting ready for the back to school effort. Who can blame those wanting to escape the stress in favour of time away?

These days I spend my time planning others’ escapes. And if there is one tip I can give, it is to plan your away time early. There will always be space at the last minute, but there are good reasons to plan, if not book, as early as Feb/Mar/Apr for your year-end trip.

If you’re looking to cruise locally over Christmas or New Year, the early booker definitely catches the best rooms. Cruise lines release their programmes 18 months in advance and the organised get the rooms they want. For example, those who created families per Peter Costello’s suggestion (one for Mum, one for Dad and another for the country) will find they need two rooms unless they get in early to book one of the few two-bedroom options, allowing a 5/6 member family to not only save money, but also enjoy the added benefit of extra space.

Some cruises are regularly booked out 18-24 months in advance. These are the special journeys, typically expedition, which happen only once or twice a year and on small ships e.g. the sub-Antarctic islands or Antarctica from New Zealand. Or the limited Broome to Darwin and reverse seasonal cruises. Or those offered by companies with a policy of discounting 3040% when a programme is released, and then steadily increasing prices as the ship fills e.g. the popular French line Ponant.

Flights, unlike cruises, cannot be booked 12-18 months out, but those looking for the best prices for Christmas 2018 and New Year 2019 (scarey!) will find that there is often a second round of ‘earlybirds’ in Feb/Mar, designed primarily to fill the planes to Europe or America but advantageous when they extend to the end of the year. Register your plans with us and we’ll keep watch for you.

Sydney has become synonymous with a great place to revel on New Year’s Eve and high demand definitely dictates a higher than normal price. We find similar in New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Hong Kong so it’s a relief to be able to offer our Virtuoso rates, all of which include a great value add.

What should I be feeding my dog?

There are so many opinions about what you should and shouldn’t feed your dog. The truth is there are many available options and pet owners need to make an informed decision based on their own time allowances, budget and your dog’s general health and wellbeing.

Is it necessary to cook my dog’s food?

This is simply not possible for many households, where the main focus is providing food for their families. In truth, your dog would probably prefer you spent any spare time playing or walking with them! On the other hand, if you prefer to cook your dog’s food, then that’s great - just remember that dogs don’t tolerate fat very well, so frying or using a lot of cooking oil should be avoided.

If I want to cook my dog’s food, how can I be certain it is balanced?

For an adult dog in good health, a mix of good quality lean meat, a variety of vegetables and some steamed rice is probably sufficient. Ask your vet about your dog’s body condition to give you a guide about how much you need to feed.

There are some excellent paid consultancy services that can design a diet for your dog’s individual requirements. An example is www.balanceit.com There is also a vet nutrition specialist, Dr Nick Cave at Massey University, who is able to design home cooked diets which is great for fussy dogs with chronic health problems. Speak to your vet for details.

Is there a difference between cheaper supermarket and premium brands?

I can usually tell from a dog’s body condition and hair coat whether they have been fed a cheap brand of dog food. Generally these diets have more ‘filler’ and poorer quality protein. As a result, the dogs do many more poos as you need to feed more of the cheaper food to reach their daily requirements.

In comparison, premium dry foods are balanced and complete, with companies spending a lot of money on R&D to ensure they are producing a good quality product.

My four favourite premium brands are Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, Eukanuba and Advance.

How many times a day should I feed my dog?

My preference is three times a day for puppies up to 12 weeks of age, then twice a day for life. For overweight dogs, feeding once a day can slow down their metabolism, so feed smaller twice daily meals and look at the total caloric intake.

Is it safe to feed raw food to my dog?

A very controversial topic! I have seen some nasty Salmonella poisonings from raw meat feeding and this can be transmitted to humans.

While dogs may be able to handle raw meat, we can put ourselves at risk by having it in their food bowl, particularly chicken.

In domestic dogs, I tend to recommend cooked over raw meat for hygiene purposes.

Dogs on immunosuppressive therapy should never be fed raw meat.

Is pet-grade meat safe for my dog?

Human-grade lean meat is preferred. The risk of sulphite preservatives in pet grade meat can cause thiamine deficiency, but it can be used safely on alternate days.

Do puppies have special requirements during their growth?

A balanced diet is not always easy to achieve for fast growing large breed puppies, so for the first 12 months I would always recommend supplementing a home cooked meal with a premium puppy dry food (at least 70% dry, 30% cooked).

For growing puppies in

the first 12 months of life, it can be tricky getting the calcium/ phosphorus ratio correct as they grow so much faster than humans and supplementing will be required. I do not endorse a sole home-cooked diet for puppies, as serious deficiencies can develop that affect their bones and growth (such as rickets).

I am also suspicious of dry food brands which have a general puppy diet for all breeds of dog. The growth requirements for a small breed compared to a large breed are very different and their puppy diets should reflect this.

Should I be feeding bones to my dog?

I don’t recommend feeding bones because of the risks of complication from fracturing teeth. Eventually, a painful tooth root abscess develops – ouch! I have also had many cases of constipation, pancreatitis and oesophageal foreign bodies after bones were fed.

To keep your pet’s teeth healthy, offer chew alternatives such as Dentastix and Greenies. There are also dental diets which have a much larger, firmer biscuit to encourage more chewing.

You can even brush your pet’s teeth – just ask your vet!

What human foods are poisonous for dogs?

Chocolate, onions, Macadamia nuts, and grapes/ sultanas/raisins.

Stay up-to-date on changes for Learner Drivers Did you know that from 20th November 2017, Roads and Maritime Services made changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme for learner, P1 and P2 drivers?

The changes impact all stages of the Graduated Licensing Scheme including: • H azard Perception Test - this is now a requirement for learner drivers to progress to P1 licence (this was previously a requirement to progress from P1 to P2 licence) • D river Qualification Test - this has now been scrapped as a requirement for P2 drivers to progress to an unrestricted licence • P 2 licence extension for suspended drivers.

As a parent and supervisor of a learner driver, it is important to be aware of the latest changes to licensing conditions so that you can provide the correct information to your learner driver.

Council is offering a free two-hour Graduated Licensing Scheme workshop at Regis Hall, Regis Campus (Junior Site), St Ignatius’ College on Wednesday 7th March from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

Get moving in 2018!

Welcome to 2018. How many of us started the year with thoughts and plans for a better lifestyle? More exercise? Better diet and being more positive about the way we approach our daily life?

By January 4th, my resolve was broken by horrendous toothache. So, thousands of dollars and a lot of pain later (root canal treatment), I am starting my fitness regime again. I do go to the gym and I have a personal trainer, although Jasper is rather dispirited by my lack of endurance.

However, I have lost weight and am proud to say that my blood pressure is back to normal (big cheers all round).

For me, this is a bit easier as I have been a bit of an on-off gym junky for years (not that you would know it from looking at me). However if you have spent time wondering where to start and are in your senior years, we have worked with Lane Cove Council, Lane Cove Rotary and a grant from the Stronger Communities Building Programme (through Trent Zimmerman MP) to develop a beginner

programme for seniors who want to move more but are not quite sure how to start.

We have worked with Sally Castell from Movement Matters to develop a 7week programme that is designed to help you get more agile and stable and make new friends at the same time. One of the key elements is to help you get better balance to reduce the risk of falls, as we know that a stay in hospital following a fall can be the start of reduced independence, and can compromise your ability to remain living in your own home.

Each session begins with an easy assessment of where you are now and you can plot your progress over the weeks. You will have exercises you can do at home that will help you to get more confident and stronger over the weeks.

Ideally this is a programme we would like to run regularly with intermediate programmes to follow on.

We start on Wednesday February 28th from 11.30am to 12.30pm here in the Park View Room at 1 Pottery Lane.

Mark kicks off his boots Mark Wolff, long-serving Bush Regenerator and Nursery Supervisor, has retired after 33 years with Lane Cove Council.

Mark had responsibility for managing Council’s Community Nursery, teaching volunteers how to sow seeds, propagate plants using suitable cutting material as well improving the variety of locally sourced native plants.

One of Mark’s biggest achievements was acquiring a selection of native bush tucker plants, sourced locally and further afield. These new additions have allowed local residents to try and grow native bush tucker plants, as well as utilise their edible properties.

Shavar Prestige Building Consultants are located next door to the Community Nursery in Banksia Close, and have observed how much effort Mark placed in to regenerating plants from seeds for the benefit of Lane Cove. They presented Mark with a Certificate of Appreciation before his retirement in January.

“Mark’s professional contribution towards the regeneration of native plants, bushes, trees and grass to strengthen the areas natural bushland plants is very much appreciated,” said Varoujan Bedrossian, Director of Shavar.

Mark started working in bush regeneration with Lane Cove Council in 1984, firstly at Warraroon Reserve. Later sites included Bushland Park, Ventemans Reach and Lovetts Reserve along the Lane Cove River.

“You could not walk through from Blackman Park to the saltmarsh area below Mars Rd at that time as the track was so overgrown with Blackberry and Pampas Grass,” said Mark.

Wendy presents donation to birthing centre in Nepal Lane Cove local Wendy Wonson and her daughter recently visited the Jibajibe hospital in Nepal to hand over a donation from Inner Wheel District A53 to equip a new birthing centre.

Inner Wheel is one of the largest women's service voluntary organisations in the world and is closely linked to Rotary. Inner Wheel District A53 (Sydney and The new Labour Ward at surrounds) provided funds to Jibajibe Hospital. equip a new Birthing Centre in the hospital, including beds, cupboards, general supplies and medical equipment (sterilizer, hand held ultrasound, suction equipment, humidicrib) together with a backup generator.

“Women can now have their babies in relative safety and comfort, rather than using the buffalo shed,” said Wendy.

“I was very moved by the ceremony, which included presenting a wall plaque. The clear joy of the staff at having a well-equipped hospital to look after mums and babies in a way that was not possible before was so evident.”

The recently constructed hospital was funded by Rotary and built by the High Himalayan Community Project. The hospital is located in the remote Rasuawa District to the north-west of Kathmandu and sits on a mountain-top, accessed by 53 miles of very poor roads.

Thanks go to Inner Wheel District A53, High Himalayan Community Projects and other donors for making this possible.

“Later we planted 600 Casuarinas, to help control the weeds and replace the native canopy. This area has improved greatly over my time here. Later on, more people were employed in bush regeneration as more volunteers took up interest in preserving the remnant bush.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve made many friends, as well meeting very interesting people along the way.”

Mark intends to come back as a volunteer at the Community Nursery in 2018.

LCFC gears up for 2018 It seems only a few weeks ago that LCFC were packing up the kit at the end of the 2017 football season! Yet here we are at the start of 2018, gearing up already for an exciting season of football in Lane Cove.

To that end, LCFC has had some changes. Steve Prescott is donning the mantle of Club President as Francis Child steps aside after his two-year term. A new committee is also in place to guide the Club for the next two years under its revised constitution.

Registrations for the new season, which begins on April 7th, are now open for all age groups from Under 6s to Over 45s for both men, women, boys and girls’ teams. As one of the largest clubs on the North Shore, there is a team available for all skill levels.

Parents should be aware of the new NSW Government Active Kids program, which gives parents the option to obtain a $100 rebate from sport registration fees for all age groups up to Under 18s.

This rebate will be available for the next four years and will hopefully encourage many new players to sign up for the Blue and Gold for the coming season.

VALE DESMOND Gregory Desmond Strangward Adcock (8th February 1923 – 5th January 2018)

L

ong-time Longueville local and prominent businessman Desmond Adcock passed away on 5th January, just before his 95th birthday.

Many people will remember Desmond from the upmarket menswear store he operated in Longueville Road for 20 years, together with his active involvement in the local Chamber of Commerce, particularly during the closing of Burns Bay Road and subsequent development of the Lane Cove Plaza.

Born in Parramatta, Desmond was the third of four sons to Edward and Catherine Adcock. Edward Adcock owned a department store in Parramatta and was an Alderman on the first City Council of the City of Parramatta.

Desmond was educated at the King’s School in Parramatta. In 1941, at the age of 18, he enlisted in WWII and served for 4.5 years in Army Transport NX 152077 based in Far North Queensland.

On return, Desmond married his first wife Nancy and they had two children, Elizabeth and Gregory.

While living in Parramatta, Desmond opened a successful menswear store in Padstow.

In 1962, Desmond and his family moved to Longueville where he resided for over 50 years.

Following his first wife’s passing, Desmond married Beverley and the couple shared an immensely happy

thirty years together.

Beverley describes her late husband as “a quiet, strong gentleman of great faith, impeccable taste, who was always ethical, honest and kind.”

Desmond opened his menswear store at 126 Longueville Road (next to Lane Cove Optical) in 1972, and it more than lived up to its logo: ‘Fine clothes for men for over 20 years.’

Beverley said that her husband’s menswear store brought a “touch of Bond Street to Lane Cove.”

The high-end store sold suits, shirts, ties and shoes and customers came from all over Sydney to purchase tailor made and off-the-shelf clothing.

Each year, Desmond would travel to Italy to purchase fabrics which he would bring back to Lane Cove, to provide customers with the best selection.

He would then arrange for his tailors to hand make the suits.

His daughter Elizabeth recounts that her father was a fashion victim par excellence.

“Fastidious in his choice of outfit, carefully laying it out ahead, pairing just the right tie with the right pocket hankie and shoes always polished to within an inch of their lives.”

Desmond ran the menswear business for 20 years, before retiring in 1992.

Always passionate about the development of businesses in Lane Cove, Desmond was involved in proposed plans for the development of the Plaza.

He joined the Chamber of Commerce and became an active member and Office Bearer.

By December 1995, the local Chamber of Commerce was almost defunct. Through his energy, business reputation and determination to see Lane Cove flourish, Desmond rebuilt the Chamber to over 100 members and he was most active in the development of the new Woolworths precinct to provide more off-street parking in Lane Cove.

Keen to put something back into the community that he believed had been so good to him. Desmond also became a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels at Lane Cove Community Aid (now Sydney Community Services) and was a very valued

member of the volunteer team.

Desmond was also accepted as a volunteer driver for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A keen gardener, Desmond also enjoyed travel, fly fishing and sculpting (he was a member of the NSW Sculptures’ Society and his work was exhibited and commended).

In 1999 Desmond was presented with a Commonwealth Recognition Award for Senior Australians by Joe Hockey MP. Ron Taylor, then President of the Lane Cove Chamber of Commerce, nominated Desmond for this award, describing him as a “quiet, unassuming, modest man who does not seek recognition or accolades but who richly deserves them.”

“He is very well known and highly respected in his community and has made a gentle, quiet but most significant contribution to the wellbeing of his neighbours, colleagues and peers.

“He is generous and unstinting in his voluntary work and is a loving and loved husband and father.”

Desmond also received a Citizenship Award for Leadership from Lane Cove Council in 1999 and was made a Life Member of the Lane Cove Chamber of Commerce in 2002. He was a long-time member of the Liberal Party’s Lane Cove branch and the RSL of Lane Cove. In addition, he was a long-time member of Longueville Neighbourhood Watch and Longueville Residents’ Association.

Desmond will be deeply missed by his wife Beverley and his two children Elizabeth and Gregory.

Hunters Hill’s history reflected in its restaurants

Flanked by the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, Hunters Hill had many French and Italian associations in its early development. How appropriate, then, that the three restaurants located within a stone’s throw of one another in Hunters Hill’s historic precinct offer those very cuisines.

This French restaurant features such classic bistro dishes as double baked cheese soufflé, chateaubriand, and crêpes Suzette, as well as traditional French favourites like croque monsieur, salad Niçoise and chicken chasseur.

From time to time there are feature dishes, including seafood paella or suckling pig on a spit.

The sunny sandstone-paved courtyard is popular with locals for brunch and alfresco dining.

The menu of this family-run, trattoriastyle restaurant with its garden courtyard appeals to all ages. Kids love the pasta, with a scoop of ice-cream for dessert, while parents enjoy such time-honoured delicacies as carpaccio, risotto, and veal cutlets done in the Milanese style. Additional choices are the daily specials, which vary according to what was freshest at the markets that morning. A personal favourite is the gnocchi with caramelised red onion, pancetta and peas.

With its emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and an all-Australian wine list, the owner/chef of this contemporary Australian eatery creates artful dishes such as a deconstructed prawn cocktail, seared tuna with Russian salad and samphire, and bacon pork cutlet with sweet corn and crackling. The chef’s signature dish is salmon sashimi that is theatrically delivered in a smoke-filled glass cloche.

LINKS WITH THE PAST All three restaurants occupy buildings with strong links to the British, French and Italian founders of Hunters Hill.

Bistro 54’s sandstone and timber building was first mentioned in council records in 1878 as ‘Peter Fudge’s butchery’ and was built on land purchased by Charles Fairland in 1859. For many years Sidney Bliss had a grocery shop there, until it was converted into the long-running restaurant, Jaspers. Dining in the Stone Room is a unique experience, with the walls revealing the skilful handiwork of the colonial quarrymen and stonemasons.

Although the building that houses Le Village actually dates from the 1980s, a major restoration of the landmark Garibaldi Inn opened it onto the courtyard surrounding the Garibaldi and stands within the same property boundaries. The Garibaldi was built as a 16-room hotel in the 1860s by Giovanni (John) Cuneo.

He had emigrated from Genoa in 1854 and purchased two adjoining lots on the corner of Alexandra and Ferry Streets. Once the hotel was completed in 1869, he managed it for many years and it became a centre of social life for the many Italian families in the area.

The Cuneo Building is now the home of Ottimo Italian Kitchen.

It was built by Cuneo, next door to the Garibaldi, for his family to live in. Cuneo’s eldest son, Thomas, used the front portion as a butcher’s shop from the 1880s. The original building was extended to the rear in the 1970s and now encompasses the courtyard that is a popular drawcard for Ottimo.

The mid-1800s saw the Joubert brothers, Didier and Jules, emigrating from France to Sydney, purchasing farmland from

British colonists in Hunters Hill and subdividing it. The Joubert’s wanted to develop a village for French settlers. They contracted a group of about 70 Italian stonemasons to construct fine houses and cottages from locally quarried sandstone. As more European immigrants arrived in Sydney, fleeing the political upheaval and famine of those times, many French and Italian families joined their fellows in Hunters Hill. They built hotels, villas, shops and churches from the honey-gold and cream stone. Many of these buildings are still standing, and have become a distinctive feature of the suburb. As well, many of the streets and geographical features carry the names of the French, Italian and British founders of Hunters Hill.

Australia Day Celebrations Australia Day is important for all of us to reflect on the achievements of our nation. Once again Lane Cove Council hosted a fantastic Australia Day event in the Plaza, with live music, a BBQ and a special citizenship ceremony to welcome our newest Australians.

My congratulations go to all of our new local citizens, the Citizens of the Year and residents whose work for the community and the nation was acknowledged in the Australia Day Honours List.

Christmas Card Competition Each year I invite the schools in North Sydney to submit entries to the annual Christmas card competition, with the winning entry being featured on the front of my Christmas cards. This year we had more than 800 entries and it was very difficult to choose a winner from all of the fabulous drawings.

Thanks to the students at Lane Cove Public School, Greenwich Public School and Hunters Hill Public School for contributing nearly a quarter of the entries - it’s great to see so many emerging young artists amongst our local students.

Local Sporting Champions Awards Recently I announced the winners of round 2 of the Local Sporting Champions Awards. These grants are awarded to sporting stars aged from 12–18 years in the local area who are travelling at least 250km return to compete in a sporting competition. They are designed to assist with the cost of travelling to compete at a high level.

Sunset in the Village Festival Lane Cove Council is renowned for its festival program, which gets bigger and better every year. Sunset in the Village is no exception, combining Australia Day, Lunar New Year and a local artists’ market.

This year marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog, a symbol of courage and loyalty in the lunar calendar. On Friday 23rd February, Lane Cove Council will be hosting the Lunar New Year celebrations in the Plaza, including a Chinese lion dance, Japanese calligraphy, live music and workshops. Children will also receive a lai see (lucky red envelope) for good luck.

Thank you to Council for all the work they put into these events which bring our community together.

2017 was an incredible year to represent the people of Lane Cove. As TVO readers would be aware, I was promoted to Planning Minister, a portfolio many of my constituents have a real interest in.

Last year we achieved some great things. We responded to the challenge of housing affordability; reformed our aging Planning Act; and changed the way Local Government deals with some of our most important developments by bringing in Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels.

We also achieved some important outcomes for Lane Cove specifically, such as our Budget announcement of major upgrades to Greenwich Public School.

In 2018, the NSW Government will continue to roll out a record-breaking infrastructure agenda. In Planning, we’ve been focusing on the idea of a ’30-minute city’, where people can access affordable housing just 30 minutes via public transport or road links to employment. We’re so lucky here in Lane Cove to already be inside that zone, where we can live and work within easy reach of services and transport infrastructure.

I know there is a lot of concern amongst the community about increased development in our cities and towns. But I’d like to assure everyone that as Planning Minister, I’m committed to ensuring that infrastructure is in place to support new development, so that everyone can share the same advantages we have in our area.

Australia, and specifically NSW, is in the middle of a population boom. Whilst some loud voices in the media and elsewhere would like to suggest this is because of overseas migration, the figures just don’t reflect that. Birth rates and interstate migration lead the reasons for our swelling population. It is vital we respond to this. We can’t simply throw our hands in the air and say our city is full – we have to respond, with smart, respectful development that keeps the character and amenity of communities, whilst adding to it with new infrastructure.

Welcome to 2018!

A happy New Year to everyone. Let us hope that this is a year of good health and success for all. Having successfully welcomed the New Year in with a spectacular fireworks display and no problems with behaviour and traffic at Woolwich, we also held successful Australia Day celebrations to officially launch the year.

Australia Day celebrations This year the Australia Day celebrations were held on Friday 26th January in the Hunters Hill Town Hall. They included an address by our 2018 Hunters Hill Australia Day ambassador, Ms Catherine Saxelby, an accredited nutritionist, best-selling author and speaker whose career has spanned 25 years in clinical dietetics, the food industry, in teaching and writing.

The ceremony began with a Welcome to Country and also included the unfurling of the Australian Flag; conferral of Australian Citizenship; and announcement of the Hunters Hill Citizens’ Awards which acknowledged the 2018 Hunters Hill Citizen; Young Citizen; Sportsperson; and Events of the Year awardees.

Local library services I recently enjoyed a tour of the Top Ryde and West Ryde libraries with City of Ryde librarian, Jill Webb.

Hunter’s Hill Council has a joint library agreement with City of Ryde which provides the library service for the residents of Hunters Hill. I was very impressed with the service offered, with both libraries filled with people reading books, or using computers and Wi-Fi. Spaces for meetings, studying and enjoying children’s activities are totally utilised and although libraries are changing as books are available online, they are our community lounge rooms of the future and a very important community facility.

Table tennis for seniors Keen members had a great year in 2017, enjoying the connections, improved fitness and fun.

Seniors wanting to learn table tennis can contact Pat on 9879 3707. Sessions are held between 10.00am -12.00pm Mondays at the Gladesville Road Community Hall starting January 15th.

Moocooboola Computer Club for seniors The Club is holding a morning tea/ open house event on January 24th between 10.00am - 11.00am at 44 Gladesville Road, Hunters Hill.

LANE COVE ART SOCIETY The aim of the Lane Cove Art Society is to encourage, recognise and reward artistic talent in the community. We warmly welcome new members – the sole requirement is an interest in art.

What product suits your art?

Good cheer and warm comradery filled the air at the Lane Cove Art Society’s Christmas meeting, rounding off a year which featured a wonderful smorgasbord of presentations, including watercolour, portraiture, oils, acrylics and mixed media.

As a wrap-up to end the year, it was fitting to gain some understanding of what new products are available for watercolour and acrylic painting. As in any profession, one needs to keep abreast of new developments and new materials. It is no different in the art world.

Carla, a representative from Winsor and Newton, gave a valuable insight into the range of products available that are capable of producing a vast array of painterly effects.

Carla, a professional artist herself, had a diverse range of papers to work on including Arches 300gsm smooth hot pressed, cold pressed and rough paper. Botanical artists aim to replicate exactly their subject without textural distraction, so they prefer hot pressed smooth paper. If texture is desired, the paper with the rough surface is better.

The undulations create ‘broken’ marks.

Using the same colours on these three different papers allowed every artist present to see first hand just how strongly the mark produced had been influenced by the paper surface.

Textural effects also come from the paint type used. Cobalt blue, for example, produces a valuable granulating effect where large particles are visible. On the other hand, when a staining paint is used it is made up of very small particles and therefore gives a much denser effect.

The latter part of the presentation centred on playing with all the different gels available in the Liquitex range. When these are added to acrylic paint, a huge range of textural effects can result. One was left feeling that the modern day painter has no excuses for doing lack lustre work! Indeed, new products encourage experimentation, which is so important to the creative process.

Thankyou Carla, for producing such a well organised and enjoyable evening of art.

It was fun playing with all the products in such a relaxed manner. Now it is time to put our samples to good use. Happy painting everyone!

The Lane Cove Art Society also holds two exhibitions yearly as well as workshops, visits to galleries or artists’ studios, and mini-exhibitions for members.

The Lane Cove Art Society meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except Jan/Dec) at the Living & Leisure Centre, 180 Longueville Rd Lane Cove (almost opposite the Lane Cove Library).

The meetings will start at 7:30pm with time to meet and talk prior to the demonstration.

At each meeting there is a demonstration or talk by a leading artist or guest speaker and anyone interested in art is welcome to attend.

Incorporating the use of local and natural dye ingredients such as windfall foliage and florist waste, Karen creates mesmerising works of art which seek to redefine our perception of beauty.

Cost: $180 Creative art journalling means different things to different people. This course will look at the different variations and options and try out techniques, themes, art materials and ideas. The emphasis is on creativity and finding your own style of expression.

As an exhibiting artist, Anne Buckingham works mostly with found objects and mixed media, often combining words with images and meaning. This is also reflected in her work with art journalling and altered books.

Anne has a strong interest in the process of art making and loves to support individuals and groups of all ages to explore their creativity and find ways to express themselves through engaging with the creative process.

She encourages everyone to enjoy finding their own style.

Anne is also a registered art therapist and supervisor, using creative practices with others for physical and mental health and wellbeing.

They discuss art, science, logic, love, lust, feelings, reason and yes, a nuclear explosion during their weeks of zany, serious and amusing living together in a nuclear fall-out shelter.

Classical and Contemporary Voice tutor We are pleased to announce that we have recommenced our Suzuki Guitar program, suitable for children from age 4. Suzuki Guitar is a very popular choice for many families when starting on the musical journey with a small child as it’s an affordable first instrument and most children love the idea of playing the guitar.

Under the guidance of specialist Suzuki Guitar teacher Nazli Badaghi, the children will enjoy rapid progress quickly learning about posture, and how to produce a beautiful tone. They will enjoy individual classes and regular group rehearsals and eventually Suzuki Graduations at the Sydney Opera House.

Nazli began learning classical guitar at age 15 and is a graduate from Tehran University, completing her Classical Music Performance Degree before arriving in Australia to start a new life with her husband, a classical guitarist. Nazli is also a trained soprano and will take vocal students at LCMCC. Nazli has studied Carl Off method, Suzuki Certificate 111 Guitar and in addition plays the traditional Santur (Santour), which is a hammered dulcimer of Persian/Iranic origins. Nazli will be taking students in Lane Cove on Wednesdays. We have spaces for pre-schoolers from 1pm and after school spaces are available from 3-6pm.

Benjamin He Traditional Piano and Musicianship/Theory tutor

Benjamin has studied piano for over 18 years and has been teaching piano for seven years.

He has taught students from beginner through to advanced levels encompassing many different styles including Classical, Contemporary and Jazz. This has resulted in an adaptable and patient teaching style. Ben is very good with children, actively encouraging their participation.

Classically trained and coming from a performance background, Ben has experienced numerous venues/auditions/ competitions and has a sound knowledge of Musicianship/ Theory and exam preparation. Ben is an ideal teacher for the keen young musician/pianist.

His qualifications include Associate and Licentiate Diploma in Piano, both with Distinction. He recently completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Ben will be taking students on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

LOCAL HISTORY I COMMUNITY

Longueville street connections to a NSW Premier and his family A number of the streets named in the Longueville Estate from 1872 to 1874 can be traced back to family connections with Sir Alexander Stuart.

Apart from the naming of Stuart Street itself, there is Christina, Mary and Kenneth Streets (named for his wife and surviving children). Cowper Street was named for Sir Charles Cowper, also a NSW Premier, who was witness at Stuart’s wedding and father-in-law to Stuart’s friend, Hugh Robison, and Christina’s brother, Edmund Wood.

ir Alexander Stuart was a banker, merchant and politician who served in both the NSW Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

His connection to the North Shore was through his joint ownership and subdivision of 305 acres of land in Longueville, together with his investment partnerships with land speculators and developers Richard Hayes Harnett Senior (1819-1902) and Richard Hayes Harnett Junior (18501938).

Stuart, together with the Harnett’s, lobbied for the construction of new suburban passenger rail and tram lines on the North Shore for access to their subdivisions. In the 1870s, Harnett and Stuart subdivided and sold much of their land holdings, including the Longueville Estate. They also donated the land for the building of a Congregational Church, (now part of the Uniting Kamilaroi Retirement Centre), which opened in 1878.

Alexander Stuart was born in Edinburgh in 1824 and educated at the Edinburgh Academy. He worked in Leith and Glasgow before managing a linen mill in Belfast. In 1845 he joined a large mercantile and banking firm in Calcutta. It would appear that other members of his family were also in Calcutta around this time. His brother James was described as an ‘East India merchant’, and another brother, the Reverend Edward Craig Stuart, married in Calcutta in 1851 before moving to New Zealand where he would later become a Bishop.

Stuart moved to New Zealand around 1850 and had partnerships of varying success with good friend, Hugh Robison. Stuart then tried his luck on the Victorian goldfields before settling in Sydney in late 1852. He joined the Bank of New South Wales as Assistant Secretary, and was soon promoted to Secretary and Inspector. In 1855 he joined the prominent commercial firm of R. Towns & Co. and became a Director of the Bank of New South Wales.

In 1853, Stuart married Christiana Eliza Wood at St Paul’s, Cobbitty. The witnesses to the marriage included Charles Cowper of nearby Wivenhoe; Charlotte Cowper, who would later marry Hugh Robison; and Susannah Frances Wood.

Christiana’s brother, Edmund Wood, later married Mary Sophia Cowper, adding a family connection to the Cowper family. Stuart and his wife Christiana (sometimes spelt, Christina), had five children, but only Mary and Kenneth would survive childhood.

Stuart began his parliamentary career with his election as the Member for East Sydney in December 1874, a position he held until November 1879. He served as Colonial Treasurer between February 1876 and March 1877. In July 1880, he was elected as the Member for Illawarra, which he represented until October 1885. He became the NSW Premier and Colonial Secretary between January 1883 and October 1885.

A devout Anglican, he battled for state aid to denomination education. Stuart also advocated for the rapid extension of railways and aid to municipal institutions.

In 1884, Stuart had a stroke which left him with some paralysis. In June 1885 he was knighted, receiving the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). He resigned from the Legislative Assembly as Member for Illawarra due to his health in October 1885, and was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council in November 1885.

In 1886, Stuart went to London as the NSW Executive Commissioner for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, but shortly after its opening he took ill with typhoid fever and died in London. His wife, Christiana also died in London in 1889.

The newest member of the Lane Cove sustainability movement has just set up shop to provide FREE REPAIRS on Longueville Road.

Repair Café Sydney North opened its door to serve its first customers on January 7th at the Living and Learning Centre at 180 Longueville Road.

Under the auspice of Lane Cove Council, the Repair Café is an ongoing operation that will open on the first two Sundays of every month. Operation hours are from 2pm to 4pm.

The Repair Café’s motto is Toss It? No Way! We are here to fight waste, reduce landfill, help you restore precious items and save money.

Volunteers help to fix a range of broken items including battery-operated household items, toys, clothes, zips, bags, shoes, jewellery, ceramics and umbrellas and also sharpen knives, secateurs and pruning tools.

If you have something that needs fixing that is not on this list, feel free to call or email us to check if we can help.

Whenever possible and appropriate, we also pass on repair skills to our visitors which is in line with great wisdom from an old Navajo proverb: “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed for a lifetime.”

A BRIEF HISTORY

Lane Cove’s Repair Café was set up in January 2016 and operated from the Uniting Church Hall on the corner of Mowbray Road and Pacific Hwy until its recent move to the Living & Learning Centre on Longueville Road.

All repairers are volunteers with skills in engineering, professional jewellery, trade based qualifications and skills gained from years of experience in fixing rather than throwing things out.

Part of a wider movement, the first Repair Café was started in The Netherlands in 2009 by a lovely woman called Martine Postma. A Repair Café Foundation was subsequently established to offer support in the Netherlands and to other countries interested in setting one up.

The first Australian Repair Café was at the Bower Re-use and Repair Centre in Marrickville in 2014, and they are now located in Albury Wodonga, Byron Bay, Canberra, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. Such great news that

De facto Vs marriage – is one better than the other?

For many Australians, marriage is a sacred institution which fulfils their hopes and dreams, giving them status, security and happiness and a stable base for their children. But it is not for everyone.

As Groucho Marx once said, “marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?” Increasing numbers of Australians feel the same way, with the percentage of couples in de facto relationships who choose to tie the knot falling.

However, most adult Australians either cohabit or would like to cohabit with a spouse. So they are confronted with a choice: do they do so in a de facto relationship or do they get married?

As this is a column about family law, let’s examine it just from the legal point of view.

Since March 2009, in the eyes of the law, married and de facto relationships have been treated in largely the same way. But there are still important differences which can become apparent if the couple separates or divorces.

For example, for a de facto couple to seek property settlement or spousal maintenance, they have to meet the specific criteria of living together for two years or having children. And they may have to prove the status of the de facto relationship. This often requires divulging personal and financial details of their shared life, including their living arrangements; their sexual relationship; the extent of their financial dependence; their mutual commitment to a shared life; and the public reputation of their relationship. This isn’t necessary for those couples that are married.

In addition, the de facto couple must file proceedings within two years of the relationship ending, or they may lose the right to claim. A married spouse can file at any time, except if a divorce occurs and

then a claim must be brought within one year of the divorce.

There are also differences in entitlements if one party dies. A de facto partner may have to prove their relationship was genuine to be able to claim on the estate. And if separation occurs prior to death, a de facto partner may lose the right to claim entirely. A married spouse is always eligible to make a claim on their spouses’ estate.

There is no ‘happily ever-after’ guarantee in a committed relationship.

But from a legal point of view at least, the irrefutable nature of marriage automatically affords couples greater legal security than does a de facto relationship. Research also shows that the prospects of married couples staying together in the long run and through hard times, is greater than for de facto couples.

Now thanks to the legalising of same sex marriages, LGBTI couples also face the same decisions as everyone else in Australia in choosing the type of relationship that works best for them.

Tennis gets a new home in Osborne Park

With some fanfare and much community excitement, the new tennis clubhouse at Osborne Park was formally declared open at a recent AGM of Osborne Park Progress Association (OPPA).

This community-run tennis court and clubhouse are now available for permanent bookings. Located in a leafy and peaceful setting off Richardson Street East, there is also a children’s play area and BBQ available.

The project was made possible by a State Government grant, plus both financial and practical support from Lane Cove Council. OPPA President Peter Bennett said: “We would particularly like to thank our local member Anthony Roberts; Councillor David Brooks-Horn; ex-Councillor Soo-Tee Cheong, and Jane Gornall from Lane Cove Council for their wonderful support in bringing this project to fruition.”

Osborne Park is very much a community shaped by the community. At the turn of the last century it was an area of cow paddocks and dairy farms. The 38 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 270 I FEBRUARY 2018

first meeting of the Progress Association was held in 1926 on cow bales. As young families moved in after the war, people worked together to improve their community. The only way to reach Lane Cove was via Osborne Road, as First Avenue did not connect with Phoenix Street. A visit by the then Mayor, who got a puncture and then bogged in the mud, helped garner Council support for major improvements!

The current recreation area was once a wasteland resumed by Council. With volunteer labour and much fundraising, a tennis court, a community hall and a children’s playground were built in the fifties. Fundraising took the form of film nights held in garages; fetes; tennis tournaments; card evenings; and even a children’s fancy dress procession down Osborne Road.

The first tennis ‘shed’ was in fact a few packing boxes for tractor parts donated by a local resident and converted by amateur carpenters. Their handwork lasted right up until the current replacement.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, FRIDAY 2ND MARCH The World Day of Prayer is a Christian prayer movement whose roots go back to the 19th century.

Since 1927 the World Day of Prayer has been celebrated in an ever-increasing number of countries. Like a Mexican wave of prayer, the first service will begin at sunrise in Tonga and move around the world until the sun sets in neighbouring Western Samoa.

By then the Day will have been celebrated in over 170 countries. Throughout Australia, over 1300 services will have been held and more than three million people worldwide have been part of the worship.

Each year a different country is invited to select the theme and to prepare the service. In 2018 the Christian women of Suriname have chosen the theme “All God’s creation is very good”.

You are invited to join the Christian community of Lane Cove as they gather at LCM Anglican Church, 19 Rosenthal Ave at 10.30am on Friday, March 2nd. It is an opportunity to worship and unite with those in our local community, as well as globally.
