Many of us felt more than a little defensive after comedian Tom Gleeson described Lane Cove as “the most boring suburb” in Sydney on social media recently.

Although based on his recollection of living here some 20 years ago, if Tom took the time to reacquaint himself with the area, he would see a vastly different Lane Cove to the one he left back in the nineties.

The changes over this time have been dramatic as infrastructure, services and retailers grow to accommodate the changing demographics and growing population.

It’s far from boring - and despite its changes, a constant that remains is its strong sense of community.

On page 4, our feature article discusses how ‘community’ can mean a thousand different things, and that the trick is to find your ‘tribe’. Putting together TVO each month always highlights the huge range of things on offer locally so that finding your tribe is completely possible – whether it be bead making, sailing, yoga, history, recycling, bushcare, business, volunteering or

singing – the possibilities are almost endless, enabling locals to find and connect with like-minded people.

Lane Cove local and AFL legend Jude Bolton recently addressed our local Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day, welcoming 95 people as new Australian citizens.

Jude talked about what makes our area such a special place to live, including its inclusiveness and sense of community. See page 16 for an excerpt from his excellent address.

With the kids only just bundled back to school, our local supermarket shelves are already stocked with Easter eggs as retailers propel us a few months ahead.

Perhaps it’s a sign that we’re in for another fastpaced year.

Regardless, this issue TVO is focussing on February in Lane Cove, and we look forward to another great year ahead reporting on what makes Lane Cove a great place to live.

Why Community Matters Community can mean different things to different people.

At its heart, the creation of social ties is as important as ever to people with regards to their identity, and roles in social institutions like family, home, work, government or society. By Liz Foster.

ane Cove and its surrounding suburbs have always offered a vibrant and varied range of community interests for locals.

In fact, Lane Cove Council was the first government body to introduce a Community Aid service in 1961, a model soon adopted by other local governments across the country The Plaza, which opened in 1977, was the first pedestrian mall created in New South Wales. Considered radical for its day, it has become an integral part of Lane Cove village life for residents and visitors from further afield, hosting local events and supporting schools, churches, clubs and local groups.

Technology provides new and easier ways for people to connect with their tribes and sample new ones if they have the urge, opening access to a myriad of new community connections. There’s really something for everyone once you jump down the Google hole. The Australian Living History Federation, for example, boasts 20 ‘Early’ Medieval groups alone (not to be confused with Medieval), and several more from Ancient through to the 20th century.

It’s hard to know how all these people found each other before the information superhighway took over.

Despite increasingly rapid changes to residential infrastructure, the good news is that local communities are thriving. And whilst community can mean a thousand different things, the trick is to find your tribe.

Always fancied singing but haven’t felt brave enough to try? Lane Cove choir Aqualuna takes people from all ages and abilities with the simple common interest of a love to sing. If singing’s not your bag, how about art classes? Centrehouse offers classes to young and old all year round. As a focal point you can’t go past the library; books, newspapers, magazines, DVDs and audio books in multiple languages and all free of

charge to use or borrow. It’s not unusual to see a school student studying alongside a retiree reading the Chinese News. There are also several different monthly talks on topics ranging as widely as the Battle of Fromelles to environmental architecture.

In the Cove, a community based website connecting local residents and businesses in Lane Cove, has literally dozens of local groups posted on its pages whether it be English conversation classes, a photography forum, music groups, a seniors computer club, meditation forums and more. If you’re housebound then you can even connect via Skype, or watch videos and join online forums.

When Jean Pope and her husband Ray built their house in Ulm Street, Lane Cove North more than 60 years ago, the street consisted mainly of 34 vacant blocks. She’s seen a few changes over the years, but has she noticed a change in community spirit?

“The community sense here was always wonderful. We had Cracker Night each year and built an enormous bonfire in the park.

All the families came, we threw crackers and had a drink or two. The children all grew up together.”

Although it might not be possible to light a bonfire in the bushland park any more, the idea of regeneration in the street is sustained and residents have held an annual street party for the past 15 years.

“At least once a year you get to know new people and say hello to everyone else,” says Mrs Pope. In fact, one resident who’s since retired to the northern beaches still returns every year for it.

MP for Willoughby and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian agrees. In addition to wide-ranging responsibilities and demands on her time, she regularly attends local community events such as school presentations and performances.

Tasia Doukakis from Mowbray Eatery says that whilst community change is rapid and inevitable, there are always constants that people look for.

“The beauty of community is that it provides a framework for people who might not have family nearby. It really can provide the support of a village in the traditional sense.”

Mowbray Eatery co-owner Tasia Doukakis believes that whilst community change is rapid and inevitable, there are always constants that people look for. The restaurant is part of St. Peters Green on Mowbray Road, a Catholic residential aged care home. With Mowbray Public School just down the road, multiple residential construction sites nearby and the leafy suburban streets of Lane Cove North and Chatswood West behind it, the clientele could not be more varied.

But Ms Doukakis insists that whilst the pace, hours and menu format might change from one community to another, there are still elements that work for everyone.

“It’s more about what appeals to people at their heart, like good friendly service and fresh food made from scratch. All people want great food regardless of where they live, otherwise they don’t eat out.”

After community feedback that people wanted somewhere local to walk for dinner (one neighbour comes every Thursday night without fail) the restaurant now serves farmto-table style meals three nights a week. It’s not unusual to see families spanning four generations celebrating special occasions.

When Principal Anna Blakeney joined Mowbray Public School in 1995, she noticed a difference from other schools in the locality.

“Mowbray was very small – around 190 children compared to other schools with up to 800 pupils. The sense of community was completely different. It had a very close knit feel, very like a rural school, and quite unique for the city.”

Principal of Mowbray Public School Anna Blakeney says the school’s sense of community is one of the things they value most.

with connecting classrooms and upgraded outdoor space for up to 1,000 pupils. It has led to the school’s immediate growth in Kindergarten and Year 1 from new young families now living in the feeder area.

Has Anna noticed a change in the closeknit feel since the school’s redevelopment and expansion?

“One of our biggest challenges has been to preserve and maintain community focus and support. We had to fully uproot and transplant all the staff and children not once but twice – first into the mini city of demountables during the rebuild, and then back again into the new school.”

She maintains that the school’s growth, whilst changing its intimate nature, can still enhance and add to the vibrant community appeal that’s been built up over the years.

In fact the school’s grounds and aspect are so unique and beautiful that families keep coming back.

“We recently hosted some staff visitors from a school in Newcastle - when they left at around 4pm they commented ‘don’t your children ever leave’!”

There are few things more precious than seeing a neighbourhood community reach out to those in need during challenging times. During a recent illness where I was housebound, neighbours delivered coffee to my doorstep, walked the dog and gave my children lifts. It felt like a giant communal hug.

If you can’t find like-minded people in your area, then try forming your own community interest group. It can be as simple as starting your own street party or book group. Chances are there are plenty of other people out there just like you.

To quote Mother Teresa: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Walk Around the World in March A bird's eye view of the Lane Cove Community Hub building in Little Street that comprises community, function, parking and residential spaces.

Lane Cove Community Hub officially opens Brand new community facilities are now open in the recently completed Little Street development.

Known as the Lane Cove Community Hub, the facility includes the new Terrace Function Room, capable of holding a function for over 150 people with access to the adjacent commercial kitchen.

There is also a purpose-built space for Lane Cove & North Side Community Services that incorporates the Park View Room (a 70 person community space), together with studios for the Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre.

Built on the site of the former 87-space Little Street Car Park, the community facilities are contained within an impressive development that includes 200 public car spaces as well as private residences and associated parking also within the building.

A pedestrian footbridge over to the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre is also now open providing full off-street access for Aquatic Centre users who park within the Little Street Car Park.

The Mayor of Lane Cove, Clr Deborah Hutchens, officially opened the Lane Cove Community Hub in December. Public access is available from the Little Street Car Park or via the newly name Pottery Lane (formerly Little Lane).

Developed by Lane Cove Council, this brief and entertaining journey through time and place talks about the traditional custodians of the land – the Cameraygal people, introduces some locals from the 1800’s and explores how the lives of Lane Cove residents have changed over time.

Are you trying to keep motivated with your New Year’s Resolution for a healthier 2017?

Walk Around the World is a great way to either keep up your good start to the year or an opportunity to get yourself moving if you extended the holiday and have been meaning to get back into the swing of things.

The concept is simple – put on your walking shoes, make sure you’ve got your pedometer on and then get moving! You can track your steps individually and as part of a team. The idea is that at the end of March, everyone will have collectively tracked enough steps to have walked around the world.

Registrations are now open ahead of the month of March when Walk Around the World takes place.

You can register for $20 online at www. walkaroundtheworld.org.au or in the Plaza on Saturdays throughout February. You will receive a pedometer and your own login page on the website. Registration fees are invested back into the community and are put towards the installation of public exercise equipment and playground equipment for children with disabilities.

Walk around the World is an initiative of Lane Cove Council, the Rotary Club of Lane Cove and the Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre.

Woollahra appeal dismissal ominous for Council On 19 November 2016, Council lodged an appeal with the Land and Environment Court regarding its forced amalgamation with Ryde and Hunter’s Hill Councils.

On 22 December 2016 the Supreme Court – Court of Appeal handed down its decision dismissing the Woollahra Council appeal. The Woollahra Council case is important because it covers many of the issues in dispute by Lane Cove Council.

Lane Cove Council's lawyers are currently analysing the judgement and Council is expecting that it will receive legal advice on its appeal prospects in early February.

An Extraordinary Council Meeting has now been scheduled for Monday 13th February, at which time Council will determine whether to continue with its appeal, which is scheduled for a Directions Hearing on Wednesday 22nd February.

Agnes’ favourite time of year was always Spring.

The path home was lined with wild freesias that perfumed the air with a heaven scent.

She pushed open the rickety old gate and lifted the lid to the post box. She pulled out a letter. She rushed to the front door with a sigh of relief, having avoided old Mrs Klapdoor who was busy gardening next door. I’m not in the mood for her mindless chatter thought Agnes. She sunk into her favourite lilac velvet armchair, opened the letter and as she started reading, the tears of joy began to flow....

BY CATERINA ZAVAGLIA Stella was confused. Tom had left early for work but she'd just seen him ducking into the arcade. In their five years together he’d never lied. Soon he emerged, deep in conversation with an attractive girl.

Curious, Stella rang him.

‘Hi darling!’ Her breath still caught at the sound of his voice.

‘Sorry I missed you this morning. Been flat out here - no time to even grab a coffee!’

Turning away, Stella felt sick to her stomach.

Mildura was hot, sweaty and fly-blown – his first trip out of the country. Little English, little money and little to show.

Deanna was at home with the three kids. Rice with fish sauce was on the plate, like most days. Pizza? Not at any time soon. Life on the outskirts of KL wasn’t easy. Making and selling goreng pisang, fried bananas, dreaming of something better – she had the education!

Local recipients announced for community grant Hyecorp Property Group recently announced the winners of its 2016 Lane Cove Community Grants Program.

For the past six years Hyecorp has offered a minimum of two grants of $2,500 each to community groups with innovative initiatives that help provide facilities that benefit the Lane Cove community.

Winners of the 2016 grant included Lane Cove Historical Society, North Shore Rowing Club and Greenwich Sailing Club.

Why do I feel like the child in the room?

UNDERSTANDING OUR ‘UNFINISHED BUSINESS’ WHEN IT COMES TO FAMILY. With the Christmas decorations neatly packed away for another year, we are left to nurse our emotional hangovers, pondering the complexities of our extended family and the unfinished business that often re-surfaces over the holiday period.

Have you ever wondered why our emotional age drops when in the presence of the people we grew up with? Family gatherings, especially Christmas, can be pressure cookers with adults playing out their roles as children in relation to each other and their parents. We slot quickly and easily back into our positions as ‘the baby of the family’ or ‘the responsible one’ despite perhaps having changed considerably outside the family.

So why do our feelings, behaviours, insecurities and resentments from decades ago continue into our adult life when it comes to family? And why is Christmas so emotionally draining for many, with past hurts and ‘unfinished business’ often re-surfacing?

As adults, we actually have very limited emotional autonomy. Every member of our family, both past and present, has impacted on the other family members in one way or another. You may have been told “always be nice and put others first” whilst for others it was “get in first and fight for what you want”. Where did these messages originate? And why are they so different between families?

There are three skin major layers – the epidermis is on top and what we see. What we can’t see are the dermis and the hypodermis. Skin cancers arise in the epidermis.

Q. What are the different types of skin cancer?

A.

The three major types of skin cancer are the Basal Cell cancers (or BCC’s), Squamous Cell cancers (or SCC’s) and Melanomas. There are others such as Spitz cell and Merkel cell cancers, but for this article we will concentrate on the three more common ones.

BCC’s bore into the skin and do their damage that way, but they rarely spread throughout the body. Spread is sometimes seen in very ill or immune deficient people.

SCC’s damage locally but are capable of spreading in the body. They develop more quickly than BCC’s and are usually more ragged looking.

Both types often have a broken bleeding top on them.

Melanomas are by far the most treacherous and subtle of all skin cancers. They are highly capable of bodily spread, sometimes turning up as metastases years later, even though the primary cancer may not have been found.

In a word, see your doctor for a full skin check up each year.

Happy 2017!

I don’t know whether to be excited or anxious about what this year will bring.

We have known for several years that we will be leaving our current home at 164 Longueville Road (opposite the library) to move to an office purpose built for us by Lane Cove Council on Pottery Lane (opposite the swimming pool). Less reading, more swimming!

As I write this, the removal men are due on Friday 10th February. We have been planning for over 12 months now, but I know that something is bound to go wrong, or at the least, not quite right. If we were making widjits, it wouldn’t matter, but we have people in Lane Cove who depend on our nurses and our meals and our clean sheets so we have to have good contingency arrangements for “just in case”. We’re also planning some exciting events in March so check us out on page 23 and come and visit us.

Another change is due following our discussions with Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services. Our Boards are happy for us to continue to explore the benefits of amalgamation. We are consulting with our staff and

volunteers to hear from them what they think a future organisation (our baby) should look like and what values and objectives it should uphold. We are also thinking about a name, and like all new families, that brings with it a lot of different opinions. Our due date is the beginning of July, but there is much planning to be done and discussions to be had before then. We’ll all continue to practise our breathing.

I came back to the office after Christmas to find a beautiful letter from one of our grateful nursing patients. The handwriting was a bit shaky and having spoken to the author, I know it took some time and effort to write which

Jude welcomes new citizens on Australia Day

Lane Cove’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony was hosted by the Mayor, Clr Deborah Hutchens. AFL legend and Lane Cove local Jude Bolton was the official Australia Day Ambassador and spoke about what it means to be an Australian.

Hundreds of locals attended the Citizenship Ceremony in Lane Cove Plaza on Australia Day, helping welcome 95 people who were conferred as new citizens.

Jude Bolton was invited by Council as its official Australia Day Ambassador. Jude lives in Lane Cove with his wife Lynette and two young daughters. He represented the Sydney Swans for 15 years and now works in commentary with Channel 7 and Triple M. Jude spoke about what makes Australia, and in particular Lane Cove, such a special place to live. The following is an excerpt from his speech.

Lane Cove is where I spend so much time with my close knit family and I see here, in this community, so many of the things that I love about Australia.

I see young families and older members of the area, coming together, shopping and eating in the wonderful cafes and restaurants in this amazing social hub.

I see our little ones playing in the Plaza, tearing around the grass, chasing the birds. They think nothing of striking up a conversation or just joining in with others. Whether that be a game of chasey, doing cartwheels or kicking a ball around with other children of any age, of any background, of any religion.

It is inclusive, it is non-judgemental, and it’s instantaneous. It's community.

And it represents to me exactly what Australia Day should be about.

It is this inclusiveness and the 16 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 259 I FEBRUARY 2017

acceptance of our way of life and finding common ground with people from diverse backgrounds, that makes Australia – and this suburb in particular – so special. That’s what I love so much about Lane Cove.

For everyone here, particularly our newest Australian citizens, I would love to give you a snapshot of my background - the Australia I grew up in.

My folks were both working class people – primary school teachers in country Victoria in a little place called Ballarat.

My parents are very down to earth and I was taught from a young age about values and behaviours and about the important of having respect for others.

My Dad took up a Principal role when we moved to Melbourne when I was 12. He taught for a number of years at Brunswick Nth Primary School. As a ‘Language Other Than English’ school,

it welcomed students from all over the world. Visiting my Dad on days off or after school gave me an insight into how diverse and wonderful this country is. I had never before had the privilege of seeing so many incredible people from so many different cultures together. And it showed me just how important it is to value and appreciate everyone for who they are and not judge them on where they are from.

Fast forward a few years to my time with the Swans - my second family. I was lucky enough to count incredible Australians like Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin as my brothers.

My time at the footy club taught me so many things about what it means to be an Australian. I learnt to enjoy this crazy ride called life and all it has to offer, to embrace those inevitable ups and downs, to accept the support of my friends and family and to tackle any challenge head on.

But perhaps the two key messages that I took from my time in the AFL that are most poignant on Australia Day are these: • Firstly, to think about others – first and foremost.

• A nd secondly, that we are all just passing through – and that we should aim to leave it a better place than when we arrived.

There have been a number of things recently that have bubbled away on a global scale that highlights conflict and divisiveness between people. But we must look to our own country, to our communities on this Australia Day, to the places where we bring our kids up, and to the ideals that we live by – to put others first and to always be driving better standards for those around us and for those that may be not as well off.

There should always be a focus around acceptance. Not divisiveness.

It should be centred around love – around care and respect – of those around you.

On this Australia Day we welcome all of you – our newest Australians. Please enrich us with your background. Aim to leave this country a better place than when you arrived.

I certainly will be doing everything in my power to do just that and to be the best role model for my two young girls – each and every day.

There’s always a temptation to reminisce about Days Of Yore but the reality is that by tomorrow, Today will be confined to Yore. Those of us in the workplace at the advent of the Internet can remember how Avant Garde it all was. Imagine - you can enter your details into this page and then get on a plane without having spoken to anyone. How cutting edge!

Now it’s just a question of keeping up, because the change is happening at breakneck speed. Darwin’s theory never

seems so prescient than in today’s techy world; evolve or die.

I’m all for choice, but the bewildering plethora of communication options at your fingertips does create new first world problems (I wanted to invite Mary, but she’s not on Facebook!) Connecting with people never seemed so simultaneously simple yet complex.

In the olden days of course, if you wanted to contact someone you either posted a letter or made a phone call. Snail

mail, a.k.a. Australia Post, was relatively efficient and provided the wonderful sensation of receiving something addressed to you that wasn’t a bill, accompanied by the delight of opening and reading it. I recently unearthed the jewels of ten years of handwritten family letters to me in a shoebox, very evocative of my first few years in Australia. But although email has replaced snail mail, the simple art of letter writing seems to have fallen by the wayside. Technological advances mean we’re connected more than ever before, but no-one is really communicating.

My husband and I met backpacking in Greece in 1990 – he from Sydney, me from London. Fifteen months passed before I arrived here and decided to look him up for old times’ sake. I related this tale recently to a young friend, who bemusedly wondered how we were able to reconnect ‘back then’.

On the phone, I said.

Yes, the good old telephone system, one step up from carrier pigeon. It worked a treat for us. Which turned out to be a lucky thing for our children.

Lane Cove's FoodFaith community garden set to shine on Channel 7 It was lights, camera, action at the Lane Cove FoodFaith community garden in Waterview Drive, Hughes Park.

Channel 7's Sydney Weekender program is showcasing the community initiative early this year, promoting it as a positive example of how different faiths and cultures can come together to share commonalities and celebrate their differences.

The FoodFaith community garden supports locals, providing personal allotments, and is also a platform for bringing different groups together to plant, tend and share meals and knowledge about food, gardening and traditions.

The crew from Channel 7 recently spent four hours at the garden filming local community members and faith and cultural groups. The event was attended by Mayor Deborah Hutchens and representatives of supporting organisations such as Glascott Landscape & Civil and St Ignatius Riverview.

Don’t miss the boat on property settlement If the time comes when a couple finally decides to separate and/ or divorce, one of the issues that usually arises is what to do about the assets - who gets what, and what financial obligations they have towards each other.

What the parties need to do is to come to a property settlement. They can do this by entering into negotiations and arranging mediation. If agreement can be reached, the agreement should be confirmed by way of Consent Orders filed at the Family Court or by entering into a Binding Financial Agreement. If the parties cannot reach an agreement, one or other of them may be obliged to issue court proceedings in order to bring about a property settlement by agreement or court order.

Usually there is no need to rush into a property settlement. It is sensible to take some time, obtaining all the necessary details of what assets there are and their value and getting good advice and assistance in order to bring about a successful resolution.

But sometimes the clock is ticking

and there are important time limits which separated couples must keep in mind.

For married couples, the time limit only arises if they obtain a divorce. If so, there is then 12 months from the date the divorce becomes final to either conclude their property settlement or to commence court proceedings. For couples from a de facto relationship, the time limit is two years from the date of separation.

If the time limit expires, all is not lost.

Either party can make a late application to the court. But if so, they must seek the court’s permission to file late proceedings.

Generally the courts have been fairly lenient in extending the time for late applications. To succeed in an application for late filing, a party must provide evidence of three things. Firstly, they need to provide some reason or excuse for the late filing. Secondly, they need to show the other party will not be put to great disadvantage by the late filing. Thirdly

and most importantly, they need to show that they have a good case for property settlement and that it would be unfair and cause an injustice if they were not permitted to pursue their claim.

If parties don’t finalise their property settlements, it can lead to disastrous and unexpected consequences. For example, they might be denied the right to pursue their claim. What happens if one party dies before a property settlement has taken place? Or one party may have a change of fortune by receiving an inheritance or having a lottery win and then may face a family law property claim from their former partner, which would not have occurred if they had taken steps earlier.

It is human nature to put off difficult and unpleasant decisions. And one of those decisions for some separated couples often seems to be the need to see a family lawyer and take steps to finalise property affairs in a timely manner. In this way, a party can provide for their financial future, put their intentions into practice with peace of mind.

New year, new leaf I don’t think too many people these days make New Year’s resolutions as such, but I do think we all take the time to reflect on our year and how we could have done things better. It’s a natural human reaction in all of us.

As part of this, our diet usually gets a spring clean.

Our climate at this time of year is helpful as it provides us with magnificent fresh produce. Summer salads, grilled vegetables, meat and vibrant vitamin filled fruits are great for helping you to trim up after all the over-indulgence.

My one suggestion for this year is to steer away from the usual plain diets, and try instead switching on the reactors in your body that encourage regrowth.

We all know the saying “what doesn’t hurt you makes you stronger” and this is true for food as well. Strong tasting foods such as pickled vegetables, hot mustard, chilli sauces, and bitter leaves like rocket and radicchio, not only give an interesting flavour boost to our diet, but they also helps to aggravate our digestive systems just enough to shake things up a bit.

I like to make sure I eat 21 different foods a day, trying to get as many different elements/colours and textures as I can. It’s like a game for me. Stone fruit, cherries, pineapple and citrus have huge amounts of enzymes to boost your immune system.

Rocket and stronger tasting green leafy vegetables like cavalo nero, witlof and cabbage have great fibre content and are also high in vitamins and minerals.

Fermented foods like yoghurts, kefir, sauerkraut and pickled vegetables are great for gut health.

Can I suggest that you find a new salad that that will not only help you get more from your diet, but will also help you to keep on track for the year.

Start by picking out new and different ingredients, and look at the way you prepare them. So many vegetables can be eaten raw, but this sounds weird right? The easiest way is to grate and then add them to your usual salad.

When I cater for a client, the foods I get most feedback about are asparagus, fennel, cabbage, radish and onion. If these foods are somewhat intimidating, try the dilution method before adding

them in a subtle way.

For example, asparagus is fantastic grilled on the barbecue and served with fish, dressed with olive oil and finished with lemon juice.

Grated or finely sliced fennel makes a great addition to coleslaw, or a crisp green salad. The same goes for radish and cabbage.

If onion is too strong for you, try finely slicing it before rinsing it in cold water for about 30 minutes to take out the strong flavours. Add it to your salad dressing to soak up the dressing and it becomes more delicious to eat.

How about ruby grapefruit as a sweet change to orange? And finely grated ginger added to a melon salad adds interest and is a fantastic cancerfighting ingredient that helps in a myriad of ways.

So remember to shake it up a little on your plates this year.

Fennel & Grapefruit Salad Put yoghurt and half of the roughly chopped mint leaves into a bowl, add olive oil and orange blossom water (if using).

Season with sea salt and chill in the fridge to let the flavours meld together.

Segment or slice the avocado, then the peeled grapefruit over a bowl to catch excess juices. Keeping the avocado together with the grapefruit will stop it from going brown.

• 2 small fennel bulbs • 2 ruby grapefruit • 1 Spanish onion • 1 ripe avocado • 1 bunch mint, leaves picked • ½ cup Greek full fat yoghurt • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 handful roasted walnuts • 1 teaspoon of Orange blossom water (optional)

Into the bowl of excess juice, shave or grate the fennel and Spanish onion, mix well to cover the vegetables with the juice and add the remaining mint leaves.

Lay out over a large flat platter. Dollop the chilled mint yoghurt over the fennel and onion, then arrange the grapefruit and sliced avocado over the yoghurt and sprinkle the roasted walnuts over the top.

Perfect with a poached fish dish, roasted chicken or barbecued lamb. A chilled chardonnay would be nice as well!

Suck it up Mmm. That phrase might sound like something from the mouth of a disrespectful teenager, but alas no.

At a recent dinner, a group of travel colleagues from around the city were sharing client-related stories and this was what one very mature owner-manager reported fresh from the mouth of a loyal client in his 60s. He and his wife had committed to a very in-depth itinerary personally created for them with a lot of love and care – and accordingly many, many hours of research and confirmations. When it came time to start paying, they decided not to go and were horrified that my friend had the audacity to charge a fee for her professional services. “No I won’t pay” he said. “Suck it up!”

I had just related my own story about one of my consultants being berated because a previously offered riverboat suite was no longer available, one week after the offer. Gosh, someone else (not our client) had dared to book the room! Worse still, the whole cruise was now full. If only he had indicated an interest, instead of ignoring the email she had sent suggesting she make a booking if he were interested...

Customers. You’ve got to love them. And I say that from a position that recognises that we, as travel agents, are far from perfect either. As the leader in my company, I’ve had to eat humble pie on more occasions than I would like, but my guiding philosophy extended to staff is that each shortcoming must be a lesson for the better moving forward. Upsets happen and most are avoidable with more care and diligence.

We are a community and we need to rebuild relationships for our common good.

So it is when we travel. Many of us resile from group touring in any form. “You won’t get me in the confines of a ship”, “the thought of a coach tour appals me” and “no, that is definitely not for me”.

However, strangely enough, the human being is made for togetherness and relishes communication.

No man is an island and all that stuff. Thrown into a random group situation, most of us can cope for a bit. However when engineered to join a group we perceive to be more akin to our own comfort zone, there can be a much greater good. I recently had a client return from a tour he joined only because his friend was so persuasive.

He had thought it would be an endurance event, however the sum total – the experience, the inclusions, the other passengers – was considerably better than he expected.

I know this fellow pretty well and know him to be very conservative and considerate. And polite. I know that one reason he enjoyed himself so much was his open attitude and accepting that plans might not always be as he personally preferred, but

in the interests of the group overall.

Later this year I have another client taking his first cruise holiday, on a gulet in Croatia. It’s a small step and he swears he’ll still never go on a “big ship”, but I do feel as if his negating mindset has been slightly chiselled away. I’m hopeful that he’ll have a positive experience and be open to larger group experiences, not for my company’s financial benefit but so that his horizons are expanded and his relationships become more meaningful. Perhaps he will then become more tolerant, less rude, and altogether nicer!

In 2017 I hope we can all move outside our comfort zone, learn to appreciate our fellow man and woman better and actively enjoy the company of others more.

Group travel seeks to foster this kinship and I heartily endorse it in a personal and professional sense. “Suck it up” is not a phrase that I like, given it is used in a disparaging way.

Rather, I suggest you “suck it and see”. You might just surprise yourself!

Avoiding Heat Stress in Dogs In hot summer weather, dogs are particularly prone to heat stress (hyperthermia/heat exhaustion). Unlike humans, they can’t sweat and the main way they reduce their body temperature is through panting. Sometimes this is not enough.

WHAT IS HEAT STRESS? Hyperthermia is indicated by a temperature of over 41⁰C. Affected dogs are in distress and can have breathing difficulties (often panting rapidly) and a high heart rate. In serious cases, heat stress can cause collapse, vomiting and diarrhoea, blindness, seizures, low blood pressure, a loss of consciousness and may even be fatal if the temperature is not quickly brought down.

A dangerously high body temperature can cause vital cells in the body to die, leading to multiple organ failure (especially kidneys) and the low blood pressure leads to shock. Sometimes the dog can be in a coma and already have brain damage by the time they reach the vet - unfortunately the damage is not always reversible.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF HEAT STRESS? ● Exercising in hot weather ● Overheating in a car or another enclosed space with poor ventilation ● Dehydration eg. running out of water or knocking the water bowl over on a hot day ● Placing a tight muzzle on the dog for longer than five minutes

ARE CERTAIN DOGS MORE PRONE TO HEAT STRESS? Dogs that tend to get very overexcited are prone to heat stress, as their enthusiasm for exercise overrides their sense of preservation.

Dogs with flat squashed faces (brachycephalic breeds) are also more prone because their airways are less efficient. Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, English Bulldogs, Pekingese, Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs are less able to thermoregulate and effectively reduce their body temperature through panting due to their squashed, narrower airways.

Long-haired breeds are also more prone, as they get much hotter than dogs with short-hair. Imagine wearing a fur coat in the middle of summer!

Overweight dogs have a layer of fat insulating their bodies, so in hot weather they tend to warm up faster than dogs in a healthy weight range.

Finally dogs that have pre-existing heart disease are more prone as they have poor circulation, so their bodies are less able to regulate their core body temperature properly.

HOW IS HEAT STRESS TREATED? Heat stress is a genuine emergency and needs to be treated urgently. Your vet will need to check your dog’s temperature and heart rate and run a blood test to see whether there is any evidence of organ damage.

If your dog is still conscious and alert, offer your dog some water and wet them with water-soaked towels to prevent their temperature rising further before transporting them to your vet or emergency centre.

At the vet hospital, a fast rate of intravenous fluids will be started to rehydrate your dog and help to cool him or her down quickly. The aim is to get the temperature down to 39⁰C within an hour. It is also important to ensure that the dog is producing urine and is not in acute kidney failure, so sometimes a urinary catheter is placed into the bladder.

In cases where the heart rate is extremely high, an ECG (electrocardiogram) machine can be attached to your dog to ensure there are no abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

Oxygen may need to be given if the dog is not breathing normally.

HOW DO I AVOID HEAT STRESS? Exercise your dog in the early morning or late afternoon, not in the middle of the day Take a portable water bowl with you when walking your dog in summer.

Ensure there are at least two water sources available for your dog in case one is knocked over or the dog is particularly thirsty.

Clip long-haired dogs very short in spring/ summer.

Keep your dog indoors during really hot weather.

If this is not possible, ensure there is adequate shelter in the backyard.

If your dog needs to wear a muzzle, then make sure it is a basket muzzle and that it is the correct size to allow them to pant effectively.

Finally, NEVER leave your dog alone in the car, even for five minutes. Research has shown that parked cars can get dangerously hot, even on cooler days with the windows open.

For example, on a 24⁰C day, within just 10 minutes, a parked car can reach 39⁰C.

Gore Bay Newsletter Issue 7 Dear community members, Happy New Year and welcome to our latest community newsletter! The intent of our newsletters is to provide an overview of what has been happening over the last six months at Gore Bay Terminal.

Regrettably, we finished the year with a marine fuel oil leak on Friday 30 December 2016 during barge loading operations. I am proud of our operational record and of course, I am very disappointed that this incident occurred. We are undertaking a full investigation to ensure we do everything we can to prevent such an incident from occurring again.

In other Terminal news, last year, we commenced the replacement of the electrical substations. In addition to our regular maintenance program, we also continued with a range of initiatives including a review of the cladding on a fuel oil tank that has been impacted by local bird life.

Being mindful of the community, we have continued our efforts to minimise any impacts from noise and odours. I have previously talked about our unique ship vetting process for vessels that berth at Gore Bay. For a number of years now, we have also required that the vessels that berth at Gore Bay use fuel with a lower sulphur content.

Our last Community Information Evening for our nearest neighbours was held at the Greenwich Sailing Club on November 11. An area of interest from the community was whether the marine fuel barge could use shore power. Once we have completed our electrical substation works we will then be able to continue our barge shore power investigations. The next Community Information Evening will be held in March.

Marine Fuel Oil Leak We asked James Crowden a few questions about the marine fuel oil leak that occurred on 30 December 2016 to help the community understand what happened, our response to contain the leak and clean up activities: How did the marine fuel oil leak happen?

The leak happened during barge loading operations from an onshore pipe.

We are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the incident and identify if there are any actions that can be taken to minimise the risk of this occurring in the future.

What was the scale of the leak?

The majority of the leak was contained on land within the terminal facility, however a quantity of marine fuel entered the water. It is difficult to determine exactly how much marine fuel oil entered the water, but it is estimated to be a few hundred litres.

What kind of Emergency Response was enacted and how was the community protected?

Terminal staff responded immediately and the leak was fully contained within protective booms so that no fuel escaped beyond the boomed area and into the harbour. The relevant authorities were notified of the incident and continue to monitor Viva Energy’s response and clean-up efforts.

How was the clean-up managed?

The majority of the marine fuel oil was quickly recovered from the water, and then our clean-up efforts focused on residual material on the shore and terminal structures under the guidance of the EPA. There was particular care placed on other sensitive areas during the clean-up. A protective boom was used to facilitate the cleaning process.

What is marine fuel oil?

Marine Fuel Oil is used to fuel marine vessels such as cruise ships, cargo vessels including fuel tankers, to name a few. Marine fuel oil is stored at Gore Bay Terminal and is not a flammable fuel.

Improved Reliability at Gore Bay Viva Energy has invested over $10M in works to replace the electrical substations at Gore Bay. The works are well advanced with most of the construction and electrical cabling completed. The final phase of works are internal to the substations.

The works aim to improve operational reliability of the site into the future and is a key investement into the Terminal.

As part of our national community investment program Jigsaw, I was honoured to take part in awarding a number of Role Model Community Grants to a variety of community organisations and we also supported the Greenwich Village Games held in December 2016.

In other news, Viva Energy signed an agreement with Shell to purchase its aviation business in Australia. Viva Energy is already the exclusive supplier of jet fuel to Shell Aviation Australia so, if the purchase proceeds, there will be no change to our operations at Gore Bay Terminal.

Continued Maintenance Program We conduct regular maintenance works to ensure we operate a reliable and safe fuel import Terminal. Over the last few years we have spent around $25M and also made a number of operational improvements to the Gore Bay facility.

We progressed with our pipelines inspection, maintenance and painting program. As mentioned, we also commenced a review of the cladding on one of the fuel oil tanks. These tanks are insulated to keep the fuel oil warm and the local bird population pecks at the insulation which may give the impression that the tanks are in poor condition. Any replacement of the cladding will improve the tank’s appearance.

Our maintenance program focuses on ensuring the integrity of our equipment however, we also have a rolling painting schedule for the Terminal to improve aesthetics.

Youth Off the Streets

Lane Cove creates stars to end violence Over 10,000 stars crafted by members of the Lane Cove community (and beyond) will feature in a special exhibition at Gallery Lane Cove this February.

Part of an international weaving project by Australian artist, Maryann Talia Pau, One Million Stars to End Violence aims to end violence by bringing people together across the world to weave one million stars for a grand display.

The State government has woken up to the fact that there is a missing link between individual houses and multistorey unit complexes.

The Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society (LCBCS) agrees with the need for more medium density housing. To fill this gap, the government is proposing to allow different types of dual occupancies, terrace houses, or a single ‘manor house’ containing up to four separate dwellings in areas currently zoned for single-family detached houses (R2 zones) and in areas zoned for medium density housing (R3 zones).

This means that these new forms of development could happen next to your house almost anywhere in Lane Cove, as the majority of land in Lane Cove is zoned for single family housing.

medium density should occur. This Plan was the result of extensive consultation with the community to carefully balance the different land uses.

The LCBCS has made a submission to the government stating that such medium density housing development should only be allowed on R3 zoned land and where this should occur should remain a decision of Council. Kuringai and Hornsby Councils have a similar view.

This view is supported by the Greater Sydney Commission (GSC), which stated that "local environment plans will continue to determine whether development is permitted or prohibited on land."

COMPLYING DEVELOPMENT The LCBCS opposes the use of Complying Development for medium density housing. It should only be approved by Council through the Development Application (DA) process.

Complying Development implies no notification to any other authorities who have some jurisdiction over development, in particular the Council; no notification to neighbours and therefore no rights to comment; no requirement to consider any effect outside the actual development site – in other word the cumulative effect on infrastructure, provision of amenities or services to the area.

DENSE AND BARE These new forms of development will be dense. For example, a two-storey (plus an attic) dual occupancy or detached dwellings can be on lots as small as 200 m², with a minimum width of 12 m. Manor houses (that is four separate dwellings two stories high) can be on lots of 600 m² with a minimum width of 15 m. Most blocks of land in Lane Cove range from 500 to over 700 m². There will inevitably be a loss of existing trees and little space left for any other growth.

One of Sydney's newest suburbs at Leppington was cited by Planning Minister Rob Stokes as a good example of this kind of development. The photo shows that there isn't a tree in sight and that there is little space for anything to grow.

We don't think that Lane Cove should look like this.

Lane Cove FC gears up for 2017 Planning and the selection of teams for Lane Cove Football Club is already underway for the 2017 season, which commences in April.

Over 180 juniors tried out for the revised Lane Cove Saints development squads, resulting in the formation of 13 teams from Under 8s to Under 14s. These teams will be entered into the higher divisions in the NSFA where they are expected to be highly competitive.

It could save your child’s life

With the start of the new school year, parents and carers of children with food and other allergic and medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, are urged to make sure their child wears a reliable medical identification in the event of an emergency.

With medical research showing that allergies among young children are on the rise, it’s as critical as ever, says MedicAlert Foundation CEO Heidi Jones.

“A MedicAlert medical ID can and does save lives,’’ Ms Jones said. “It’s a simple and effective tool to alert and protect caregivers. It not only alerts people that the child has a medical condition, it provides paramedics and first responders with critical information about your child’s allergy or health condition.’’

Research from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) shows the number of Australian children hospitalised with potentially fatal food allergies is growing. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form and is potentially life threatening.

As part of its research, the MCRI studied hospital admissions from 2005 to 2013 and found a huge 50 per cent rise in children with anaphylaxis.

The most common triggers are egg, cow's milk, peanut, tree nuts, seafood, sesame, soy, fish and wheat.

Anyone with a medical condition, allergy, implants, using medication and with advance health directive and health management plans should have a MedicAlert medical ID.

Welcome to a New Year in Lane Cove.

Another busy year where facilities will continue to improve, infrastructure will be built, major projects will commence and the local character of our bushland, parks and waterways will continue to be preserved.

One of the most substantial projects of the year is the Rosenthal Avenue Car Park Redevelopment project. Construction will commence on the car park area mid-year ahead of its transformation into a 500-space underground car park with park and open space on top. This will be one of the most significant projects in Lane Cove’s history – arguably only matched by the conversion of Lane Cove Plaza from a road to a pedestrian Plaza. It is therefore fitting that this year we celebrate the 40 Year Ruby Anniversary of the Plaza’s official opening in 1976.

I look forward to sharing in the exciting future of Lane Cove throughout 2017.

Lane Cove Community Hub opens I am pleased that at the end of last year we officially opened the Lane Cove Community Hub – a brand new community facility above the 200–space, Little Street Car Park. The new Terrace Function Room is capable of holding a function for over 150 people, with access to the adjacent commercial kitchen.

There is also a purpose-built space for Lane Cove & North Side Community Services which incorporates the Park View Room (a 70 person community space) and studios for the Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre.

Pedestrian safety in and around the Little Street precinct has been greatly improved with the opening of the pedestrian footbridge over to the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. This not only makes it safer but more convenient to park within the underground car park and cross over to the Aquatic Centre and gymnasium.

Council Merger update Just days before the Christmas break, the Supreme Court-Court of Appeal delivered its long-awaited decision on Woollahra Council’s appeal.

Given the dismissal, Council is receiving legal advice on its appeal prospects and will determine via an Extraordinary Meeting on 13 February whether to continue with its appeal (currently scheduled for a Directions Hearing on 22 February). The latest information will be available on Council’s website.

1 Million Stars exhibition The time has finally come to celebrate and reflect on the truly amazing effort of Lane Cove locals who have together woven over 10,000 stars as part of the global 1 Million Stars project. The stars will be on display as part of an Exhibition at Gallery Lane Cove this month before they then head on to form part of a 1 millionstar installation at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Australia day 2017 celebrations - Australia Day is an important day for all of us to reflect on the achievements of our nation. All four of the local Councils in the North Sydney electorate marked the day with special ceremonies and citizenship ceremonies.

This year I had the pleasure of welcoming new citizens at North Sydney Council’s event. This is always a highlight of my role as an MP and to see the individuals and families who have chosen to make Australia their home is a reminder of all the things that make our country special.

My congratulations go to all our new citizens, our local Citizens of the Year and residents whose work for our community and the nation was acknowledged in the Australia Day Honours List.

A very special birthday - Recently I had the immense privilege of attending the 111th birthday of a person who I suspect would go unchallenged as the Lower North Shore’s most senior resident. Ann Quan has been a resident in the Lane Cove municipality for almost 20 years and is still going strong. Ann’s family attributes her longevity to clean living at Bondi Beach earlier in her life and her strong Christian faith.

It was a pleasure to meet Ann and present her with flowers and special congratulatory messages.

Lunar new year - We are blessed to live in one of the most multicultural communities and electorates in the nation. I want to wish those with Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese heritage all the very best for the Lunar New Year which commenced on Saturday, 28 January. This is the most important traditional holiday in many parts of our region and marks the first day of the lunar calendar. Chinese New Year 2017 begins the year of the Rooster (I am told that Roosters are hardworking, resourceful, courageous, and talented).

Watch out for scams - Throughout the year many local residents contact me about scams. It’s important that we are aware of how to recognise, avoid and report scams as the level of sophistication involved is increasing with new technology.

We have all had calls or emails claiming to be from our software providers, banks or even the ATO seeking access to our computers or money – they can sound very convincing.

‘Scamwatch’ is available to help you recognise a scam and avoid it where possible. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) works with consumer protection and other government agencies to promote awareness. 'The Little Black Book of Scams' is a pocket-sized guide to spotting, avoiding and reporting consumer fraud and scams. Copies are available from my office, please call 9929 9822.

As this summer nears its end, I want to voice my concerns about the inordinate numbers of drownings – children and adults alike - in NSW recently and my sympathies to the families and friends of the victims.

Although some of the drownings occurred in rivers and beaches, most children were victims in their own backyard pools.

That’s why I want to highlight the importance of safety guidelines around pools – having effective fencing, ensuring your child has swimming lessons, wears floaties and is under constant supervision.

Also, knowing how to perform CPR and having first aid skills is vital as this can and has saved lives. In that regard, I strongly urge you to contacting St John’s First Aid - 1300 360 455 or www.stjohnnsw.com.au - in order to learn or update your First Aid skills.

On brighter news, I am pleased to announce the recipients of the recent NSW Community Building Partnership Grants.

The Community Building Partnership program aims to create more vibrant and inclusive communities by supporting projects that encourage community participation, inclusion and cohesion, and deliver positive social, environmental, inclusive or recreational outcomes.

The $200,000 that our electorate of Lane Cove was allotted has been awarded to the following seven worthy recipients: yde Hunter’s Hill Community Transport Association was given ● R funds to upgrade the parking depot for community transport vehicles.

Hunter’s Hill Congregational Community Church was given ● funds to repair the front gable of their church. ● Concord and Ryde Sailing Club was given funds for a Rescue and Training Watercraft Replacement Project. ● Anglican Church Property Trust Diocese of Sydney was given funds to further their restoration of the All Saint’s Church Memorial Hall.

Osborne Park Progress Association was given funds to ● complete their construction of a new tennis clubhouse. ● Greenwich Sailing Club was given funds to upgrade their men’s bathroom. ● The NSW branch of the Scouts Association of Australia was given funds to refurbish the kitchen, and upgrade the floor and security fence at Ryde Scout Group.

Australia Day - Another successful Australia Day ceremony was held at the Deckhouse Woolwich on 26 January. The ceremony included the conferral of citizenship for 11 residents of Hunters Hill and the announcement of our 2017 Community Awards. Congratulations to Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year, Andrew Curtin; Young Citizen of the Year, Patrick O’Farrell; Sportsperson of the Year, Nicholas Wilkinson; and Community Event of the Year, the Hunters Hill Historical Society’s Heritage Walk and Plaques launch.

Our Australia Day Ambassador was Dr Benjamin Law, who is an author and frequent contributor to Good Weekend, frankie and The Monthly. Dr Law has written for over 50 publications in Australia and worldwide. The television adaptation of The Family Law, which he wrote for SBS and Matchbox Pictures, was screened across Australia in early 2016.

Volunteer drivers needed

- On 19 December, Council lodged our grounds for appeal to the Court of Appeal (CoA). The CoA advised a return date for the Government response to the appeal is 22 February. A hearing date will be set at that time, possibly in late April. Council’s solicitors are also examining the CoA decision on the Woollahra appeal, which was handed down on 22 December and Woollahra Council has subsequently sought leave to appeal to the High Court.

Ryde Hunters Hill Community Transport - I would like to encourage older and frail aged residents of our Municipality to use our wonderful local community transport service. If you are no longer driving, find public transport difficult to use, need help getting to medical appointments, shopping or just out and about, please telephone Ryde Hunters Hill Community Transport on 9816 5000. They can arrange to pick you up from your home and take you to where you need to go. They also have a regular program of social bus outings to interesting locations. The service provides caring, reliable transport and their drivers take extra time to make sure you are looked after. Last year the service celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Community Recycling Centres for Household Problem Waste - Common household problem wastes that can’t be collected via council kerbside waste and recycling collection services include paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor and other oils, car batteries, household batteries, smoke detectors, and fluorescent globes and tubes. New and enhanced Community Recycling Centres (CRC) are being established across NSW and householders can drop off their problem wastes free of charge. One is due to open in Artarmon and the centres will be operated by local councils working in partnership with the EPA. Funding for the centres comes from the waste levy, as part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. Enjoy your coffee sustainably in 2017 We all enjoy a good cup of coffee and many of us appreciate the added convenience of a takeaway cup. It’s part of our increasingly busy and mobile lives. But where do all those empty cups go?

Are they recyclable? Is there a better solution?

THE SOLUTION

Over one billion disposable coffee cups are littered or landfilled in Australia per year. Although the outer membrane of most coffee cups is made of recyclable paper, to make these cups waterproof, the card is fused with polyethylene. This is a material that cannot be separated out again in a standard recycling facility and will probably outlive your time on earth! This type of container cannot be considered recyclable.

Some coffee shops use ‘compostable’ cups, which are a slightly better alternative but also have their problems.

These are lined with polylactic acid (PLA), a ‘bioplastic’ which usually combines genetically modified cornstarch with plastic polymers. These cups can only be recycled in industrial composting facilities - which are rare. Consequently, most takeaway cups end up in landfill.

Bringing your own reusable coffee cup for your takeaway is an easy way we can all help reduce our plastic pollution.

With the support of Lane Cove Council and ‘Responsible Cafes’, Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group (LCSAG) is promoting a new program to help you save both the environment and money.

To encourage customers to bring reusable cups to fill, some local coffee shops now offer a discount to customers who order coffee in a reusable cup. Look out for the blue ‘Responsible Cafes’ posters, to claim your discount. To date Oliver Brown, The Junction, Ground Caffe, Fourth Fish Cafe and Gelatissimo have all signed up to be part of the solution and this list will grow.

LIGHT BULB MOMENT:

RECYCLING YOUR LIGHT BULBS IN LANE COVE Ever wondered why you are told not to put your light globes into the red, general waste bin?

Can you still place broken the light bulbs in the collection bins? Yes, but please wrap them in newspaper and place in a bag.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes contain a small amount of mercury which, if placed in landfill through your red bin, can leak toxic chemicals into the soil and potentially the ground water.

What happens next? Council’s contracted recycler will collect the bins and correctly recycle any useful elements before disposing of the toxins in a safe and environmentally - friendly manner.

To add or not to add – that is the question…

Good-humoured banter filled the festive air as the chairs were positioned for the November general meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society.

Guest artist John Perkins painted this still life during the November meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society.

Although our advertised guest demonstrator, the esteemed artist Guy Warren could not be in attendance, his presence was included in the proceedings by our ‘fill in’ guest artist and life member, the highly respected John Perkins. What a wonderful night unfolded in the hands of this master oil painter.

A signwriter by trade, John’s workplace was coincidentally located opposite Guy Warren’s studio. He entertained his audience with a couple of humorous stories of times past when mischievous pranks occurred. These anecdotes exposed the warm camaraderie that existed between these talented artists, both of whom have now risen to the top echelons of the art world.

It was interesting to watch John pace around prior to his demonstration. The pacing continued as the oil painting emerged on the canvas. He maintained that viewing the work from a distance enables the artist to really assess how the composition is progressing.

The starting sketch was drawn quickly with a brush. Basic shapes of the still life were freely composed. “Don’t be fussy in these early stages,” advised John.

Whilst the subject matter was ordinary - a jug, a lemon and a bottle - John was able to execute his technical expertise adding and subtracting paint all over the canvas.

rather than paint clearcut outlines. Engage the imagination.

How many brushes do you work with? John held five in his left hand and worked the paint with the brush in his right hand.

Allow some of the edges to be ‘lost’ – they add a little bit of mystery to the work.

Constantly the composition was being tweaked. Paint was added, assessed by walking back then adjusted accordingly.

A rag was used to take out paint, leaving ghost-like surfaces that were then reworked. It was fascinating to watch the search for the oil painting that was to eventually grace the canvas.

Several tips were given throughout the talk. If you measure from highlight to highlight you can assess whether or not your composition is correct.

Moreover, a very bright light focused on the subject will project the tonal qualities of the still life. A third tip was the importance of allowing the background to break through into the middle section of the artwork.

Irrespective of what subject is being painted, landscape or still life this point needs to be kept in mind.

With tremendous ease, John’s demonstration produced a magnificent still life oil painting. It had only taken a lifetime plus one hour.

The multi-award winning John Perkins has given generously to the art world over a long time span through his teaching as well as the various positions he

has held. He is currently the President of the Royal Art Society. Stepping in at short notice to do the final meeting of the year for the LCAS was particularly appreciated by all the artists present. Thank you John for sharing your stories and your passion for oil painting.

Exhibitions Gallery Lane Cove will be hosting two exhibitions that bring the voices of domestic violence to the public domain.

One Million Stars to End Violence is an international weaving project by Australian artist, Maryann Talia Pau. The aim is to end violence by bringing people together across the world to weave one million stars for a grand display. These woven stars are symbols of light, courage and solidarity to end all forms of violence, including violence against women and have been made by local residents and groups in Lane Cove. Please join us in the gallery and see the amazing installation of these stars made by local residents.

Running alongside the One Million Stars to End Violence is Private Matters, an exhibition and installation that explores the themes of domestic violence, with a particular focus on the children and the importance of protecting them and recognising their suffering.

While the exhibition deals with confronting issues, the installation with works by artist Anne Buckingham are made from paper and found objects from the domestic environment.

Beautifully stitched, coiled and pasted together, these alluring objects encourage us to recognise the importance of no longer keeping the suffering behind closed doors.

Join Anne on Friday 17th February from 10am to create artworks using children's books to make shoes for the installation, representing the children that are affected by domestic violence.

Opening night will be held from 6pm on 15th February and the exhibition runs until the end of February.

Walter Hand’s Quarry and Reserve Hands Quarry Reserve is 1.7 hectares of open space and remnant bushland located in Lane Cove West that has frontages on Barwon Road, Hallam Avenue, Garling and Moore Streets.

U

nofficially known as Garling Street Reserve, it was renamed in 1995 to honour the long service of Council employee Walter Hand. Walter (known as Jack), was employed by Lane Cove Council from 1920 to 1954.

He started as a road worker and retired as engineer. Many of his years at Council were spent working in the Council’s quarries, including the former quarry site that was named in his honour.

Walter Richard Hand was born in Yeoval, NSW in 1889.

He was the seventh child born to Thomas and Martha Hand.

Thomas, a Scottish immigrant, was a storekeeper in the central western district and later settled at Peak Hill. Growing up, Walter would have assisted in his parent’s mixed business.

Walter married Lillian Hunter at Peak Hill in 1912. Walter and Lillian soon moved their growing family to Sydney, initially buying a grocery store at Milsons Point before their move to a mixed grocery shop and dwelling in Helen Street, Lane Cove. In 1920 Walter began working for Lane Cove Council as a road worker while Lillian continued to run the shop. Shortly after, the shop was sold and the growing family moved to a house named Fairview in Henley Street, Lane Cove. The couple were still living in the house when Lillian died in 1971 and Walter (Jack) died at age 89 in 1978.

During his 34 years of service, Walter worked his way up through the council’s outdoor staff progressing to ganger, overseer, deputy engineer and engineer. He worked at a time when everything was done the hard way with pick, shovels, mattock, axe and crowbar. Holes were made in stone with jump bars and rock was blasted from the quarries with dynamite.

Walter would have assisted in the building and maintenance of all Council’s public works including wharves, swimming pools, parks and gardens, stone roads, curbs and guttering. During World War II, he was head-warden in charge of Council workers carrying out night patrols in the Lane Cove area, and was also involved in the building of airraid Shelters at Council’s Mars Road Depot.

Hands Quarry Reserve is located on land that was originally part of a 12-acre grant by purchase made on 15 October 1858 to William Redman. The land was described as ‘special country lots...adjoining Isaac Nichol’s western boundary and are very poor being for the most part rocky...the formation is sandstone’. A creek off Stringybark Creek originally ran through the property. Following Redman’s death in 1882, the

land was purchased by the Haymarket Land, Building and Investment Company.

In 1913 it was subdivided and sold as Bellevue Farmlets, with much of the area remaining rough bush used for cattle and sheep.

In 1993, Council began a review of the degraded, weed-infested, former stone quarry site.

Funding was obtained under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program and was matched by Council. A plan of management was developed and included bush regeneration, erosion control, construction of

walking tracks, footbridges and stairs. An amphitheatre area was made utilising the former quarry area and landscaping planted near the street entrances.

In March 1995, local member Kerry Chikarovski and Lane Cove Mayor Rod Tudge officially opened the newly named and refurbished Hands Quarry Reserve. About 40 members of Walter Hand’s family were in attendance to share the renaming of the quarry site and to honour their ancestor’s contribution to the area.

Weight loss challenge to start in February Vision Fitness has run its weight loss challenges on average twice per year since 1999, helping transform the lives of thousands of people.

In time for those New Year resolutions, the next challenge starts on February 17.

The Vision Personal Training 9 Week Weight Loss Challenge provides access to personal training, nutritional advice and support of the studio's Personal Training team.

The winner of Vision’s latest challenge was Patrick Cavenagh, who has now won two consecutive challenges and has lost a total of 50kg.

"Joining Vision Personal Training Lane Cove in February 2016 was one of the best decisions of my life. Almost one year later I'm 50kg lighter, have had significant strength gains and it's close to 10 years since I've been at the weight I'm at now.

“There have been many highlights along the way, but the best by far is regaining my health and self-confidence - and seeing my family's and friends' admiration for what I have achieved. I'm even looking forward to sticking my head in a few rugby scrums in 2017.”

Vision’s runner-up was Jennifer Olding, who lost 8.6kg.

“My health and fitness were the motivators to get me started, however the vision team made sure they were influencing all aspects of my psyche to keep me going from week to week.

“My advice to others would be to throw yourself into it, engage in every aspect of the program and without a doubt you will achieve success. It’s a science. It works. You will surprise yourself at just how much you can achieve in 9 weeks.”

Larger apartments to provide more space for families Hyecorp Property Group has launched a new residential project in Lane Cove with larger apartments suited to families.
