EDITOR'S NOTE This month’s front cover features senior students from the Cameraygal School of Performing Arts, who meet each week for drama classes in the Living & Learning Centre on Longueville Road.

Dressed as Christmas elves, Madeleine, Isabelle, Danielle, Kate and Anna will be walking around the Plaza spreading Christmas cheer in the lead up to the Lighting of the Christmas Tree event on Friday 8th December.

I love the festive season! My middle name is Noelle and I was supposed to be born on Christmas Day (but did not arrive until the next year).

Our family loves to give gifts. In fact, my sister, Vivienne, is Australia’s gift-wrapping expert. We write witty comments on our gift cards and then there is a vote at the end for best gift tag, best wrapped gift and best gift. There are four children in our family and we live all over Australia - for some reason we all end up giving Mum the same thing!

For me, it doesn’t feel like Christmas unless we have a fresh Christmas tree from the Scouts, with the smell of pine needles wafting through the air.

This year, I’m stepping away from my usual Christmas spent in rural NSW with its 40-degree heat, and will be heading to Europe to try for the ultimate ‘White Christmas’ in Austria with my partner Andy and close friends. We will be celebrating the European way - on Christmas Eve - then waking Christmas morning for a few early morning ski runs.

Christmas has always been a big deal with my family, with Mum and Dad going all out with an abundance of Christmas presents piled around the tree.

I think the food is always the thing that I remember about Christmas’s past.

My grandma was a great country cook and everything she made in her wood fuel oven tasted so good! There was always something special about her trifle - she said her secret ingredient was love and I think she was right!

For me, it doesn't feel like Christmas until I've attend Handel's Messiah in the Sydney Town Hall. I have loved this beautiful Oratorio since I was a teenager.

On Christmas Day, Ian and I attend church and then celebrate Christmas at home with my immediate family.

This is now special because we have a granddaughter Lillian (pictured), who exudes the joy and excitement of Christmas as only a child can do.

On Boxing Day, we join with over 50 of our extended family and Kris Kringle is divided among the generations, creating much laughter and exchanges.

I spend Christmas basting ham and turkeys, and packing Christmas feasts. I have Dean Martin blaring, reindeer ears on, and I love delivering on Christmas morning.

In the afternoon, I’ll get together with friends to enjoy crunchy iceberg lettuce and chilled peaches. I’m a little over fancy food, but I’ll still eat gingerbread!

My favourite Christmas memory is of my Granny, who made lots of Christmas cakes every year. From when I was about eight, I helped with layers of brown paper and peeling the skins off almonds - I was in awe of her strong mixing arms!

This year, we will be hosting our families on both sides for a Christmas lunch. We’re happy hosting because it allows our kids to relax at home and enjoy their gifts. Michelle and I start early, getting prepared - it takes a few hours but it’s worth it to be at home and have everybody together.

When the kids were younger, we used to go to the Wiggles Christmas concert every year. Good times and I’m not sure who loved it more - myself or my kids. I used to see the Wiggles when they were the Cockroaches, so they held a special place for me.

A favourite Christmas memory is from when I lived in India, walking in the freezing cold to church for the open-air midnight service surrounded by family and friends. We huddled near the big fires to keep us warm, and then had celebratory cake, wine or coffee when we arrived home in the early hours of the morning.

A family tradition from India which we carry on here is visiting neighbours, friends and family and taking a plate of homemade goodies, including fruit cake, kulkuls, rose cookies, milk toffee and fudge.

We will be trading until Christmas Eve, so I will spend time with my bakery family and our lovely customers, making sure they have all their breads for Christmas, before celebrating with my own family and friends.

We are a small family, so always enjoy participating in some communitybased events to heighten that special excitement of Christmas.

The festivities begin with our street’s Christmas Party. This has been a regular occurrence for the past 22 years, and it has been wonderful observing all the local children as they grow up.

However, the highlight must be on Christmas morning when at precisely 8am, Santa finds time to come to Greenwich…by boat! Santa brings presents which his ‘elves’ distribute to the local children. It’s a lovely chance to catch up with neighbours, and to relax and enjoy that wonderful happiness of family and friends which I feel so privileged to have.

We will be spending Christmas overseas this year. We are flying out to the USA on Christmas Eve and will be spending Christmas with our extended family in California. Our family is expanding and we are expecting a new arrival early in January 2018.

Christmas has always been a special time and we will enjoy spending it with our family and friends before making new Christmas memories with the arrival of our second child.

My day starts relatively relaxed, with a 2-ish start allowing plenty of time for an easy breakfast and then a morning of chopping and cutting, making sauces and all the prep work to ensure a great meal.

Our daughter Bridget sets the table her favourite task and a job she does with aplomb. Then it’s time to open the presents, shriek over the wild socks and lust over the latest cookbook that might get read but not used.

The guests then arrive with the seafood entrée, the Christmas pudding and pav.

Time for a celebratory champagne toast Jess Goodman Lili Miconi and our merry day begins!

My favourite Christmas memory is as a kid, spending Christmas Day and all the holidays with my grandparents and cousins on the beach at Port Stephens.

Very happy memories.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Days are always a big celebration with extended family and friends. This year we will be spending Christmas at home with family and loved ones - it’s our turn to host with 45 guests! Christmas Eve will be an intimate dinner with my wife before the big festivities begin.

For me, it doesn’t feel like Christmas unless the house is chaotic and there is the smell of roast turkey. If I’m in charge, there’s always music – the kind that everyone has to help create at the Christmas table with tuned hand bells, whistles, xylophones and voices, of course!

I’m looking forward to the lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Plaza on 8th December, which features a performance

by LCYO. It is local events like this that help perpetuate our ‘village’ atmosphere and build a great sense of community.

A few years ago, we began a tradition of having a quiet dinner with the kids at home on Christmas Eve. We write our goals for the coming year in a little red leather book and have a good laugh at past entries.

This year Wayne and I will be spending Christmas at home with the kids, extended family and our neighbours.

Lots of pressies and ham and eggs for breakfast. Lunch is usually a combination of seafood and the traditional Christmas turkey with all the trimmings.

One of my favourite Christmas memories was being proposed to on Christmas morning in London while it was snowing outside.

With all our family living interstate, the festive season for us usually entails a trip across the Nullarbor to catch up with loved ones in the south-west of WA. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without temperatures over 35 degrees; Mum’s phenomenal trifle; Nan’s hand patchworked Christmas stockings; listening to the kids whispering to each other excitedly as they discover gifts underneath the tree; listening to Bing Crosby’s ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’; someone knocking over the beetroot on the white linen tablecloth, and the smell of peppermint trees at the beach when we all go to cool off after a day of indulgence and merriment.

Christmas is a magical time of the year. I love catching up with friends and family. I love how it is a time of Peace and Joy, and remembering less fortunate people of the world.

For Christmas day, we usually have a large get-together. It’s noisy and chaotic but lots of fun and we love it that way.

Silly paper hats are worn, and during lunch the competition is on for the worst printed joke found in the Christmas bonbons!

As an artist, my Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the sky blue and white agapanthus flowers growing in our gardens and parks - a reminder of the Star of Bethlehem.

I am the youngest of six girls, so Christmas was huge in our house. On Christmas Eve we pinned our stockings with our name to the sofa or an armchair.

In the morning, we gathered on the landing and when everyone was up, we would send Daddy down to make sure Father Christmas had left so we could go down to the living room which was amazing with piles of presents.

It doesn’t feel like Christmas unless Lane Cove Dance Academy’s annual concert is done and dusted. It’s the best, most exciting time of my dance year with a month full of photo days, rehearsals and performances. Lots of fun and creativity from both teachers and students culminate in a huge weekend of performances at the beginning of December.

Once this whirlwind is over for another year, I definitely know it’s Christmas!

After a wonderfully busy year, I’m feeling like home is the best place to be, so I will be spending Christmas in Sydney with family and friends.

When I married we had three boys and we borrowed some traditions and made some of our own. Every year on Christmas Eve we put out the carrots, mince pie and sherry for Father Christmas, lit a special candle my son decorated in playgroup and sang Jingle Bells.

100 words WINNERS

When we launched the 100 words competition at the beginning of 2017, we weren’t sure whether it would capture the interest of our readership.

However, after receiving hundreds of entries during the course of the year, it has more than proven itself.

My father, a Lane Cove resident, was immediately sparked by the ‘100 words’ competition idea and challenged me to a duel that I could not refuse.

Writing a story using only 100 words was like trying to figure out the Rubik's Cube. It was certainly challenging, and yet immensely satisfying. It was tricky to create a feeling of space and time within the exact word limit.

The stories I wrote were some that I’ve wanted to put into words for a long time. I believe that everyone has a good yarn to tell.

Is it luck that the car smacked into the embankment rather than plough through oncoming traffic after a fierce battle with the death wobbles?

The second on the scene was a living angel who, with a word, calmed two large, terrified dogs that threatened to shred the first. He then held the head of the unconscious driver until the heart attack spittle cleared from his mouth and the professionals arrived.

Luck indeed this angel, master dog whisperer and life saver, had a strengthening hand on his back from his mum, as her 14-year-old son did his miraculous work.

Selecting three winning entries from the almost 100 short stories that were published was no easy decision and we would like to congratulate Conchita GarSantiago, Jennie Clayton and Chris Curtis.

Here our three winners explain the appeal of the competition. We have also re-published their winning entries.

As we continue the competition into 2018, Jennie, one of our winners, lays down the challenge: “The gauntlet is on the ground. Will you dare to jump in and have a go in 2018?”

Some years ago, an article on LLoyd Rees, another Lane Cove resident, appeared. He was quoted as saying something like, "Everyone has some means of artistic expression", so I thought I would give writing a try.

Creative writing is a hobby that I have been pursuing for the past nine years.

The 100-word competition is very good for flexing the brain. Like all writing, the starting point is finding the idea. It can simply entertain, or have a serious social purpose. It surprises me how much can be said in a few words, but often words get in the way and it is better to let the scene tell the story.

April chopped the onion with a brisk economic rhythm. Eggs broke, she beat and folded, adding a little milk and salt.

“Yes my dear, ready soon.” Tears welled and she tried to wipe her eye with the back of her hand, forgetting too late the bruised and swollen socket. She winced and returned to the task. A little oil and she poured the egg into the pan.

Yes officer, we had a problem with rats.

She tried a humourless chuckle but her bruised ribs hurt. “Almost ready, dear” she called as she reached under the sink for the final ingredient.

It wasn't until I came to this country over ten years ago, from Spain, that I started to do a few courses in writing. I suppose the beauty of the surroundings inspired me. Also the memory of my mother made me write what I couldn't tell her anymore.

I found out about this competition through my writing group in the city.

My motivation to enter was to test my writing. I could write and write, but if I don't take part in competitions, I can't see if it is good or not.

Big chubby fingers with uneven torn nails. Those were Mum's hands. Ugly to the rest of the world, beautiful to me.

They had a handkerchief for my nose when I was sick and for my eyes when I was crying. They had a brush for my hair when I wanted to be beautiful and a needle with cotton when I needed a new dress.

But when they were empty, they were the most beautiful.

I specially love those hands when they were empty, because they could envelope my face with love, keeping all my body warm and my soul happy.

Ask your local health professional Dental trauma I was recently lucky enough to play in an AFL tournament in Byron Bay and was on hand when a player came off the field bleeding profusely from the mouth from an accidental elbow strike. He had lost four front teeth, which were soon recovered, but had also fractured another tooth and sustained fractures in the front portion of both his upper and lower jaws. I managed to re-insert two lower teeth and straighten out his lower jaw fracture, but his upper jaw was beyond repair. His teeth were unable to be replaced as the jaw was too severely fractured to support them.

Over the course of the following two days, it became apparent to me that there generally isn’t a thorough enough understanding of how to handle dental first aid when teeth are lost.

PERIODONTAL INJURIES

The periodontal ligament refers to the soft tissue that holds the tooth into the jawbone. A periodontal injury involves rupturing of this attachment, causing the tooth to be loosened, displaced or even entirely lost.

The tooth socket is an excellent environment to store the tooth until the dentist can fine tune the position and apply a splint.

It is critical to the survival of the periodontal cells - and therefore to the tooth’s chance of surviving reimplantation - that it is not rinsed with water. Water will very quickly kill the cells.

Ask your local health professional What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Christmas is a time to count your blessings. The topic of this month’s column emphasises the importance of good health as I discuss a particularly nasty disease.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name for a collection of conditions in which motor neurones in the brain, brain stem and spinal cord become inflamed and/or degenerate.

Motor neurones are responsible for controlling muscle activity. Every action represents a muscle doing its job and the neurones control this, whether it be eating, speaking, breathing, swallowing, lifting weights, climbing ladders, or walking around the block.

With MND, the motor neurones fail in their function of controlling muscle activity. This leads to progressive weakness of muscles in various parts of the body, then death of their related controlling neurones.

What are the first symptoms of MND? Onset of symptoms is often subtle, but are usually quickly progressive. To quote Professor Murtagh again, symptoms include: • Weakness, and less easily noticeable, muscle wasting of the hands and feet.

People may notice their hand grip is weaker.

• Stumbling, developing a spastic gait or limb movement and foot drop. The feet fail to lift and drag on walking forward.

• Trouble swallowing.

What are the types of MND? If you look up the Mayo clinic website at www.mayoclinic. org, you will find types and subtypes of MND. It does not list MND as such, but as the individual variants of it.

To keep things simple, the three recognised main types of MND are: 1. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

2. Progressive muscle atrophy.

3. Progressive bulbar palsy and pseudobulbar palsy.

I’ve heard of Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS. Is that MND? Yes, this is one of the collection of disorders in the MND group. Lou Gehrig was a famous American sportsman who developed the first kind of MND listed above – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Who gets MND? Men more than women and typically in middle age. It varies greatly.

How do people get MND? Various experts suggest about 5-10% of MND is inherited.

Most cases have no known triggering cause or other known relationship at this time.

How many people are affected by MND in Australia?

The MND website says about 2000 people have MND in Australia at any time. Of these, 60% are male and 40% are female. The site suggests two people a day are diagnosed, and two people a day die from MND. Not nice is it?

The mean time to confirm an MND diagnosis is 10-18 months. With my patient, we danced through several surgeon and physician specialists, dealt with red herrings on the way, and eventually saw a Neurologist who diagnosed the condition after excluding a number of unpleasant conditions prior.

Such is the way of MND diagnosis.

What is the worldwide incidence of MND? MND Australia says about 2.65 people/ 100,000 worldwide will get MND, with a male to female ratio of 3/2.

Professor Murtagh says the diagnosis is clinical, ie. on what the history is and what is observed.

It is fatal within 3-5 years.

There are no tests for MND. ‘Riluzole’ may help along with medications to control symptoms. The outcome is death, not reprieve.

What are some examples?

Some cognitive distortions for individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder include: Mind reading – Assuming you know what people are thinking, and that they see you in the same negative way that you see yourself.

Fortune telling – Predicting the future, usually while assuming the worst will happen. You’re already anxious before you’re even in the situation.

Catastrophizing – Blowing things out of proportion. For example, if people notice that you’re nervous, it will be ‘awful’ or ‘disastrous’.

Personalizing – Assuming people are focusing on you in a negative way, or that what’s going on with other people has to do with you.

What can we do about Social Anxiety Disorder?

The main thing to know is that it is treatable - sufferers are far from alone.

Traditionally, the

treatment of choice is psychological. The best evidence supports Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, including controlled breathing, muscle relaxation and exposure to feared situations.

A group treatment setting has its benefits. There is emerging evidence for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as internet based therapies.

By Liz Foster With Spring well and truly in the air, I’ve decided to declutter my house, applying the usual short-term zeal that seems to appear at such times.

After a couple of sweaty hours, I stand back and take stock. The chuckout pile in the middle of the floor seems disappointingly small and my house is not noticeably emptier. Maybe I’m not doing it right.

I Google de-cluttering tips and realise my problem. It’s something I’ve never acknowledged, not even to myself, but there it is in black and white. My name is Liz Foster and I’m a Hoarder.

Stuffed toys? Well, yes, but only a

monster would throw them out.

That viper’s nest of cables and chargers jamming my kitchen draw? Well, they must fit into something, right?

Do I believe that no amount of leftover food is too small to keep? Absolutely! You never know what your next meal will be (luckily, I’m also a Tupperware hoarder, so this is not a problem, apart from the tendency to find strange green hairy lumps growing in containers lurking at the back of my fridge).

Do I think that anyone would be a terrible friend to throw away old birthday cards and letters? Well, yes, people took the time to send me these, the least I can do is keep them for years on end!

Pens of any kind are too useful to dispose of? Guilty as charged. Plus, who

can be bothered to go through and try them all.

Concert/film ticket stubs? Come on. They hardly take up much room, and I can’t bear to part with them.

Can’t wait for a quiet evening to read that pile of mags?

Correct. It doesn’t matter if I never read them, they have to sit on the coffee table for at least a month before I can chuck them out.

Too much sentimental value attached to old concert t-shirts? Refer concert ticket section.

Keeping old school work is another hoarding problem because I’m now faced with culling my children’s collections.

Throwing out the pre-school folders detailing tower building heights and pincer grip activities is hard, plus it takes a disproportionately large amount of my time with no discernible result.

I give up and make a cup of tea.

Besides, I’ve still got my ticket from the first and original Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985. I might be a hoarder, but I’m a hoarder with kudos.

A Message from the CEO

Working together Last month we held a community forum, welcoming more than 50 local health practitioners to our Centre so they could find out more about what we do and how we can help their patients..

Local GP Dr Sabrina Saldanha, and Stewart James, GM Hammond Care, were invited to talk about their experience of the value of integrated community and aged care.

We also heard from three people who have used the services of Sydney Community Services. Their words were very moving as they spoke about the difficulties faced by carers and seniors in the community. Linda Chen told us about how she had been helped when she lost her sight ten years ago. Linda spoke no English when she started English classes.

“I have been a client with the Hunters Hill Community Centre of Sydney Community Services (SCS) since I lost my vision ten years ago,” said Linda.

“SCS provides volunteer visitors who support me in learning and improving my

English, and they help me to develop my computer skills. Every Friday afternoon I meet my friends in the English group at the community common room.

“Language is an important tool for me to connect with other people in the community. The computer is another important tool. It brings the whole world to me, even though I am vision impaired.

I have learnt how to send and receive emails; research information using Google; listen to audio books, music and news almost every day. By scanning documents, I can read anything.”

Linda’s whole speech was about three minutes. She had written and learnt it by heart. We were all very moved and she received a huge round of applause at the end.

The aim of the evening was to ensure that the local Lane Cove and Hunters Hill health professionals were fully aware of the support services that we provide for seniors and people with a disability.

It was also a great networking opportunity. We will be making it a regular event as it keeps local health professionals up-to-date with us and each other.

CHILL OUT! It’s Christmas!

HAVE YOU TRIED PICKLING?

An important celebration time for lots of us, the summer holidays are synonymous with backyard barbeques, picnics in the park and juicy watermelon on the beach.

Catch-ups and parties are all a go-go. I love how our climate makes for very healthy and delicious entertaining. The shops are groaning with goodies to help - cheeses, fresh fruit and vegetables.

CONSIDER A GRAZING TABLE The latest craze is grazing tables - lots of little bites spread out over a large table with cheese, meats, fruits and breads.

If this is your dream, consider using boards and platters that fit into your fridge to stay as cool as possible and away from buzzy flies. Remember that food out at room temperature spoils quickly and in our warm climate, even moreso.

This means that anything protein based has a maximum of 4 hours out of the fridge - including preparation time - before becoming unsafe to consume. Mayonnaise, pate, seafood and soft cheese - all the good stuff - needs to be fresh, served chilled, and disposed of if not eaten in that time.

Christmas is no time to be sick with food poisoning or gastroenteritis, but it does happen, so be safe with you and your guests. Remember everyone, especially pregnant women, young children and older folk, can have ill effects with questionable foods. The golden rule is “if in doubt, throw it out”.

KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH THE BBQ Christmassy ideas when you need to ‘take a plate’: • Blanched asparagus formed into a round wreath adorned with cherry tomato baubles and baby bocconcini.

• Cucumber ribbons rolled up with smoked salmon and flavoured cream cheese.

• Peach quarters stuffed with a mixture of soft blue cheese and crushed walnuts, wrapped with basil leaves and prosciutto, secured with a skewer.

• Cookie cutter watermelon sliced into stars with marshmallows, strawberries and mint leaves for dessert.

• Pitted cherries doused with ginger syrup and served with Greek yoghurt and crumbled gingerbread cake is magnificent layered into glasses or a trifle bowl.

Pretty it up with gold leaf for extreme decadence.

Please remember that you need to arrive and get home from your events safely, so be organised. Drink responsibly, eat enough, try to not over commit, and thank your hosts. We want you to hug your family and enjoy 2018.

• If you are using the local picnic area for a barbeque, consider fish. Portioned pieces wrapped in cooking paper (glad bake) and foil are very quick to cook. Layer each parcel of fish with thinly sliced onion, lemon, garden herbs such as parsley, and cook in the parcels. Everyone gets their own little ‘dinner present’ to open and it’s cleaner for the barbeque as well!

• Easy barbeque extras can include pre-cooked potatoes tossed with olive oil and garlic, and corn on the cob with lime, paprika and butter.

• Blanching gourmet sausages can help prevent burning and over cooking (no Dad, carbon sausages are not good for you!). Marinated lamb cutlets are quick to cook, and scotch fillet steaks are my pick for red meat that needs only a sprinkle of salt and pepper to bring out the great taste.

Pickling has made a comeback. It’s healthy and sooo moreish!

Try this pickled prawn recipe which is perfect for a picnic; over an avocado and mango salad; with grilled asparagus and lime mayonnaise; or simply with fresh rye bread and butter served with a chilled chardonnay!

• 1 tbspn coriander seeds • 1 tbspn black peppercorns • 2 tspn fennel seeds • 1 whole star anise • 1kg cooked king prawns, peeled, cleaned, tails intact • 250ml (1 cup) white wine vinegar • 125ml (½ cup) lemon juice, plus ½ lemon, thinly sliced • 1 long red chilli, split • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 250ml (1 cup) extra-virgin olive oil (you may need a little extra) • Dry roast the spices for 3-4 minutes in a pan till fragrant, then pour straight into the vinegar and lemon juice to arrest the spices from over cooking.

• Add the lemon, chilli, garlic and prawns to the spiced vinegar. Stir and pour into a large glass jar, cover with the olive oil and refrigerate. They will be ready the next day and will keep for 5 to 6 days.

Community Meetings During the course of 2017, Viva Energy attended a number of information forums with the Greenwich Community Association (GCA) that were facilitated by SafeWork NSW. The purpose of the meetings is to discuss topics of interest to GCA and the community in relation to Viva Energy’s Gore Bay operations with the relevant regulatory representatives and subject matter experts in attendance such as: SafeWork NSW, NSW EPA, Lane Cove Council, NSW Police and/or Fire and Rescue NSW.

Pipelines: •

Viva Energy owns and operates a number of high pressure pipelines in NSW. These pipelines transfer diesel, petrol and aviation fuel;

Pipelines are operated and maintained in accordance with Australian Standard AS2885.

•

Australian Standard AS2885 is the national best practice standard for the design and operation of high pressure, steel pipelines;

The GCA nominated Emergency Management and Pipelines as the first topics for discussion.

An introductory forum was held in June, followed by two dedicated sessions on Emergency Management and Pipelines in August and November respectively. Some of the information discussed included: Emergency Management: •

The Willoughby/Lane Cove area falls within the North/West Metropolitan Area Emergency Management Functional Area. Every Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) has a Local Emergency Management Plan (LEMP);

•

The LEMC facilitate local emergency management capability through inter-agency co-ordination, cooperation and information sharing;

•

The decision and responsibility to evacuate, provide advice and reinstate the community rests with the combat agency in control of the incident at the time;

•

Gore Bay Terminal emergency response arrangements involve the initiation of first response actions and as well as inter-agency interaction;

•

Training exercises which include simulation of various scenarios (including water an land-based) are undertaken with various agencies;

•

Viva Energy works with the LEMC to conduct formal interagency desktop training exercises that focus on multiple emergency services and their response to incident scenarios including subsequent evacuation if required.

Maintenance works being undertaken on a pipeline

The carrying of hazardous liquids through pipelines at high pressure is an activity that requires potential risks to the environment and public safety to be strictly managed;

As part of a broader engagement program with local councils and regulators, Viva Energy recently met with Lane Cove Council to outline our pipeline operations and maintenance management processes. Council representatives from Planning, Open Space, Civil Works Engineers and Environmental Health Officers attended the briefing session.

Scheduled pipeline maintenance works at Shell Park Greenwich residents may have noticed works occurring at Shell Park during July and August.

The works were part of Viva Energy’s ongoing pipeline management, maintenance and inspection program.

The works involved both physical inspection and scheduled replacement of coating on that section of the pipeline.

Pipelines are an important part of Viva Energy’s fuel supply chain and maintenance of these is a priority for our business.

Community Program Final Call for Role Mode Grants Viva Energy’s community program is offering grants of up to $5,000 to role models from registered education facilities or non-profits organisations.

Applications for grants must be for projects which address either mental illness, substance misuse or breaking the poverty cycle through education.

Getting to a Better headspace In early October, Viva Energy celebrated headspace Day and the start of National Mental Health week.

Mental Health is something that can affect all of us, and young people are often the most at risk.

One in four 12-25 year olds have experienced a mental health issue during the past 12 months, and alarmingly, suicide is the leading cause of death of young people.

Viva Energy is very proud of our partnership with headspace and in particular, our mental Health Role Models program which is designed to upskill and empower young mental health ambassadors to destigmatize mental illness and promote help seekingamongst other young people.

If you haven’t planned yet for this summer’s holidays, fear not! There are still options.

Are you stuck for Christmas holiday ideas? Bored with the same old, same old?

Looking for the right trip that will deliver joy and happiness to all?

To help you a little, here are some suggestions for breaks short and long.

CLOSE TO HOME perfect for everyone There’s a lot to be said for holidaying in our own beautiful, wide brown land. Australia, from top to bottom, has something for everyone.

Traditionally, Qantas and Virgin release great fares on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day to fill all those unsold seats. Perfect for a last-minute getaway, city breaks are particularly good – luxe hotels at less than luxe prices because business people aren’t travelling.

Darwin and surrounds may be hot as Hades, and it will pour every day. But if you love waterfalls, it’s a magic time to visit Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks.

Prices are low and you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.

Or nip over to Far North Queensland.

Here too it’s tropical, but it seldom rains all day and you’ll find a wide choice of resorts with gorgeous pools beckoning you to laze away the day. If you can travel after the Christmas and New Year rush,

you’ll find the choice wider and the prices more favourable. I’ve enjoyed many a perfect January family holiday here.

Noosa and the Gold Coast are perennial favourites. They’re within easy reach, so you can even drive and save your precious dollars for some special meals out or days at a theme park or two. Or why not consider heading south to the wonderful Mornington Peninsula? The weather may not be quite so reliably warm, but there’s a lot to do and explore, wonderful walks and bike rides, wine tasting, gentle child friendly beaches – and it’s not going to cost a fortune.

New Zealand is definitely close to home and while not exotic, offers a credible summer option. Alas Kiwis heading home to see the family have usually planned well in advance, so last-minute fares can be exy all through December and January. Fly, pick up a car and enjoy a driving holiday that will have you enthralled, particularly through the South Island.

Speaking of islands, our Queensland islands, Fiji, Samoa and the Cooks are not great for last minute getaways. Cyclone damage has reduced inventory and prices are high, so save these destinations for a forward planned holiday to make the most of your money.

THE YOUNG COUPLE IN LOVE Think anywhere there’s a beach, beautiful sunsets, delicious cocktails and a whiff of the exotic. Mauritius and the Maldives rate highly, but what about Sri Lanka? Sri Lanka fulfils the need for exotic and adventurous, you can be as active or as bone idle as you want, but every day will excite you. Or why not test the relationship with a snow trek through the wilds of Hokkaido, Japan - or Bhutan? Both very out there with serious bragging rights.

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN ....

Travelling alone can be lonely, not to mention expensive, and this is where a bit of planning helps. Special, no single supplement or reduced single supplement tours and cruises are a godsend and will usually attract other singles so that you’ve plenty of company. Think European Christmas market river cruises, or closer to home there’s the especially designed Bill Peach journeys or last-minute specials onboard Holland America cruises designed for older clientele.

If you’re young and carefree, why not join in the fun of a group tour, where there’s oodles of choices at home and abroad for the under 35s.

Here’s a chance to really expand the horizons. My all time favourite is Japan.

Cost effective – you can eat really well for not too much in Japan, even with teenage boys. Safe and endlessly fascinating, it is in a similar time zone, and you can combine skiing, snow monkeys and culture which makes for a terrific trip.

Ditto India. Every moment is a “wow/ look at that/quick or you’ll miss it” occasion. It’s more challenging than Japan for sure, but equally as interesting.

Anywhere where the food and wine is good, the shopping excels, you can catch a show or two and maybe, just maybe, there’s the chance to check in with the opposite sex! If you’re after sophistication, then New York doesn’t fail to disappoint, and even Vegas can cut it. Consider too a cruise on an adult oriented ship – choose all inclusive and all you need to do is relax, enjoy and party.

FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN What worked for me when my children were young was finding one place with everything - be it an apartment or resort, but always near a beach or pool (and golf course for hubby).

When the children got older, we took them on a cruise around NZ, a holiday they swear was one of their best. And this was before ships with ice-skating rinks and water slides and drinks packages - their highlight was unlimited ice-cream and a fun kids club!

Cruising has moved on since then and there are now fabulous options that appeal to both Mum and Dad, and the kids, and even the grandparents looking to see more of their offspring.

There’s nowhere better than a Disney resort (or cruise). Nor is it too late to visit Father Christmas in Lapland...

Double celebration for Sloans Sloans of Lane Cove has just taken out not one, but two of three National Finalist spots at the 2018 L’Oréal Colour Trophy state semi-finals for NSW/ACT. The L’Oréal Colour Trophy is the world’s longest running live hairdressing competition. Held across five continents in 37 countries, it is a platform for emerging hairdressers to showcase their creativity and technical excellence.

First names to be called were current NSW Hairdresser of the Year, Scott Sloan, together with his colourist partner-in-crime, Isobel Allan (who briefly stepped away from her new role as a mother to compete).

Next to be named was talented Senior Stylist Idy Duong, who has spent the last year as part of an elite industry mentoring program known as Hotshots.

Scott, Isobel and Idy will go on to the national finals in Melbourne in February 2018. Over a gruelling 4-hour period, they will compete against teams from all around Australia, recreating their look on a model live in front of brand representatives. The work will be judged by both an international and national panel of judges.

The winner will be the hairdresser who creates the most innovative, fashion-forward and inspired look. The prize includes editorial coverage in Marie Claire, together with the opportunity to attend the L’Oreal Professional International Business Summit, generally held in a glamorous European destination.

North Sydney Seniors Expo

Join us for Carols in the Park

I recently held the second annual North Sydney Seniors Expo.

Over 1500 people came and visited stallholders who provide services and assistance to seniors, including the Department of Human Services, nbn co, Sydney Community Services, Lane Cove Council, Anglicare, Red Cross North Shore, Australian Hearing, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the NRMA.

Hunter’s Hill Council is hosting Carols in the Park on Sunday 3rd December, commencing at 6.00pm, on Boronia Park Oval.

I was delighted that our wonderful former NSW Governor, Dame Marie Bashir, attended and opened the Expo. She is an incredible role model for us all.

We have produced a new Seniors’ Guide containing useful information about services for seniors in the North Sydney area. If you would like a copy, please contact my office on 9929 9822.

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day allows Australians to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices made by those who have served our nation in times of war. Services were held across our area with veterans, students and residents joining to commemorate all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. A particular thank you to Lane Cove RSL sub-branch and Lane Cove Council for hosting a beautiful ceremony in Lane Cove Plaza on the day. Lest we forget.

Lane Cove Festival by the River The annual Festival by the River hosted by Lane Cove Council was once again a resounding success. A particular highlight was the Food & Wine by the River event on Sunday November 5th. Despite the less than fabulous weather, hundreds of people spent the day tasting some incredible food and wines from the Orange region, entertained by our very own Lane Cove Public School.

Lighting of the Christmas Tree It’s hard to believe but the festive season is upon us, with Christmas decorations and the spirit of Christmas popping up all throughout Lane Cove. The lighting of the Christmas tree in Lane Cove Plaza is always a particular highlight for me, and I am looking forward to seeing it on December 8th at 7.45pm. Come and say hi and enjoy the lighting of the tree.

This is the perfect opportunity to pack a picnic, bring your family and friends and spend some quality time relaxing on the lawn, singing along to some traditional Christmas tunes!

The evening will start with the Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra. You will also hear the extraordinary voices of Jordyn Richards and Alexia Caceres, as well as Sophia Chesworth. Our Christmas band this year will be ‘MucDubh’, a local parents band. Towards the end of the evening, Santa will visit us on stage before a fireworks display.

Carols in the Park will include a ‘sensory/chill out space’.

The tent, provided in partnership with Ability Links NSW, will be available for people with disabilities or other special needs and their carers, who may need to take a break. The tent will be staffed by disability support volunteers to provide assistance and a safe environment for those who need it.

Thank you to volunteers A morning tea held at the Hunters Hill Town Hall was a small token to show our volunteers that we appreciate their efforts and all their hard work. Volunteers are the backbone of organisations and do a lot without expecting anything in return and they deserve to be recognised.

Member for North Sydney Trent Zimmerman MP joined us to help celebrate and thank the many volunteers in our community.

As a community, we need people from all walks of life and with a variety of different experiences to participate and share their skills and knowledge. If you find that you can manage some time to volunteer, we would love to hear from you.

As this is my final column for the year, I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very merry and peaceful Christmas. It’s been a busy year in Lane Cove and I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard on behalf of all residents and the wider electorate next year. A special thank you to the many people who continue to work tirelessly throughout the Christmas period – in particular our emergency services personnel and volunteers. It’s people like you who make Lane Cove such a great place to live.

Remembrance Day is always an emotional time for many.

For me, it reminds me of my uncle, my Father’s twin brother, whose ship was sunk during WWII.

On Saturday November 11th as part of the centenary of Anzac, soil samples were collected from areas within Hunters Hill and Gladesville from the places where locals enlisted.

One sample was collected from the ground of the RSL SubBranch to be placed together with all samples at the War Memorial in Hyde Park, where a plaque will be created for every town, suburb and locality around NSW that enlistees for WWI gathered. These samples will be displayed alongside the place name. Close to 1700 plaques are to be displayed on mass around the Hall of Service.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for the festive season and the year ahead.

I recently had the great honour of joining dozens of children and their parents at a wonderful facility called Livvi’s Place, to announce a new and universal standard for children’s playgrounds throughout NSW. This will allow all the state’s playgrounds to be audited and brought up to standard.

Livvi’s Place is a fantastic all-inclusive playground with especially designed rides and attractions accessible to abled and disabled alike.

Visiting with me was Fiona Morrison, Commissioner for Open Space and Parklands, and Bec Ho, Executive Officer of the Touched By Olivia Foundation, a charity dedicated to the creation of inclusive playgrounds for disabled and able bodied.

I need to make special mention of the charity ‘Touched by Olivia’. This was started by the Perkins family, who needed to create meaning when their 8-month old daughter Olivia died in 2006. The purpose of Touched by Olivia is to ensure every child is included in their community.

This is achieved through the implementation of Universal Design Principles in the built environment. Executive Director Bec Ho is doing a magnificent job in promoting the

idea of these inclusive playgrounds, but there are still not enough of these spaces.

Sadly, the reality is that many NSW families with disabled children across our cities and towns don’t have access to these types of facilities. This is not acceptable and we need to do more to address this inequality.

Our parks and play spaces are essential to the growth and development of our children. Here children of all abilities and from all walks of life can strive to work together to conquer challenges, learn from each other and build friendships, irrespective of physical or mental ability.

For the parents and carers, they are meeting points where support, friendship and relief can be found.

The commitment to create places that are equitable and available to people of all abilities is central to the work of the NSW Government and many organisations, including the Touched by Olivia Foundation.

The network of Livvi’s Place play spaces across NSW is a significant step towards this, but more work needs to be done.

The NSW Government is committed to creating more play spaces where all children can play and where carers of all ages and abilities can enjoy time with their children and their neighbours.

“I don’t plan; I don’t paint to a formula. Every painting is different,” Paul tells us as we cluster around to photograph the vibrant individual painting he has just completed.

Lights, darks and glorious colour With an anticipatory buzz of pleasure, members of Lane Cove Art Society welcomed back their old friend, Paul McCarthy, as guest artist for their October meeting.

V

ersatile and much awarded for his colourful works in oils, pastels and water media, Paul is also an insightful teacher and great fun to watch paint.

Paul had set up a canvas with a preparatory drawing on it, ready to work in acrylics from an on-site sketch in watercolours.

“I’ve been away and done lots of work in my sketchbooks – 20 minutes max should give you enough information.” He passed the sketchbooks around while he started on the foliage of his chosen subject - a painting of desert oaks.

“Tone is the most important thing,” Paul said, as he loosely put on the glorious colours of reds, yellows and ochres. He uses a binder medium in the acrylic paint because it holds better than water. “Don’t paint objects; just fill in the gaps – look at the darks and lights, the negative spaces.”

Paul’s palette contains Lemon Yellow (“the brightest I can get”); Cadmium Yellow; Cadmium Orange (“always brighter than a mix”) and Cadmium Red. He uses Permanent Rose and Magenta because they can be mixed with white for a bright pink, whereas Alizarin Crimson doesn’t work as well. He also uses three blues – Cerulean, Cobalt and French Ultramarine.

Paul has earth colours on his palette for watercolours and acrylics, but not for oils, preferring the variety achieved by mixing his earths.

As Paul worked, he fielded questions from his audience, explaining that he works more loosely in acrylics than in oils, 34 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 269 I DECEMBER 2017

and also more rapidly as it dries faster.

“I use oils when I want more detail - I can work the paint more. An oil painting will take me a lot longer to finish.”

According to Paul, all the brands are compatible in oils and in watercolours, but acrylics are tricky because the chemical formulae used in their manufacture varies from brand to brand. The advantage with acrylics is that you can go over the painting as often as you like.

Paul’s painting develops well, with touches of blue enhancing the oranges and yellows and the white trunks of the trees standing out in the desert landscape.

“Don’t get too precious,” says Paul. “The more you can break it up, the better.”

Paul offers a piece of advice from his years of teaching artists saying that all paintings, in every medium, work for the same reason and that is the tonal design.

You have three tones – dark, medium and light – and the proportion of the whole surface allotted to each must be different. One must be smaller than the others.

Colour should be treated the same – either warm or cool colours should dominate.

It’s time for art to shine!

The year might be coming to an end, but Gallery Lane Cove has one more exhibition for you.

It's Time is a collection of work from students, teachers, artists, hirers, artists-in-residence, staff and committee.

Time is an abstract concept that is unique to the human experience. This exhibition will explore the passing of time - summer time; the fact that we ‘never have enough time’ and find ourselves ‘out of time’.

We hope you can make it to our opening event from 12pm - 2pm, Saturday 2nd December, where we will have flower steaming demonstrations with artist-in-residence Karen Tam; a slow stitching workshop with Rhonda Pryor; bubbles, nibbles and a chance to catch-up before the silly season takes hold.

The exhibition will be open from 27th November to 27th January 2018.

NATURAL DYEING WORKSHOP, WITH KAREN TAM This introductory workshop will focus on exploring natural colour, from flowers and foliage and other ingredients like turmeric and food waste.

Students will develop an understanding of dyeing fabric samples and silk scarves using basic shibori methods. The focus of the workshop is to share Karen’s love for dyeing with natural dyestuffs and earth friendly ingredients in a fun and sustainable way. U8s cheer on the Socceroos to victory!

A group of seven year olds, who call themselves the Benfica Rockets, gathered together with their support staff in mid-November to watch the Socceroos in the crucial must-win FIFA World Cup qualifier.

LCFC’s U8s team watched the Socceroos’ recent victory on the big screen set up especially by SBS in a local backyard.

The Rockets are a popular team that represents Lane Cove Football Club with great enthusiasm and panache in the local U8s competition.

The Rockets have played together for three years, starting their careers in the U6s. It has been three years of tears, laughter, laces coming undone, wins, losses that have felt like wins and postgame treats.

The support staff around them, aka parents and grandparents, have formed friendships that will stand the test of time and embody the true spirit of what a community like Lane Cove is all about. It is also testament to the very important role that team sports play in a community.

Apart from the thrill of watching the Socceroos qualify for the World Cup, the team and friends had a fantastic night together made even more special by the crew from SBS, who arranged a large outdoor screen and put decorations up for the occasion so that the backyard was transformed into World Cup Qualifier central for nearly 40 fans of all ages. There was of course the added excitement of TV cameras capturing these young Socceroos fans willing their heroes on.

For the Socceroos, and especially coach Ange, the 3-1 defeat of Honduras was the culmination of a long and arduous journey taking 22 games to qualify over two-and-ahalf years despite only losing twice - which says something about how difficult it is to qualify for the best sporting competition in the world.

The match itself had everything. The nerves were jangling after an agonising first half where the Socceroos didn't seem to be going anywhere, despite having a lion’s share of the ball.

When the second half got underway however, the game came alive with a very direct approach to goal resulting in a free kick smashed into the back of the net by Australian captain Jedinak. This really got the party started and two penalty kicks later, Jedi had a hat-trick and we are well and truly on the plane to Russia. The Rockets were in fine voice prompting a neighbour or two to pop over and join in the action!

A huge thanks to Lara, Jen, Lucy, Sean, Joey and Em from SBS for putting on a great night.

Sing your age Lane Cove!

The Lane Cove community choir, LaVoce, was recently awarded a Sing Your Age grant from the NSW Department of Community Services.

According to the NSW Minister for Ageing, Tanya Davies, the program aims to encourage more seniors to discover the joy of singing.

“Creative arts, including singing, are a key component of healthy and active ageing. It’s a great way to bring people together and have fun doing something they love.”

The LaVoce application stated that monies from the grant would be used to advertise in local retirement villages, church and other community groups, including Lane Cove Council, to promote the choir and its goals which appear very consistent with the project title Sing Your Age. The program is supported by the Australian National Choral Association (ANCA).

Adrian Lee, President of LaVoce, asks all seniors in Lane Cove to reflect on the benefits of singing, including being part of a community, improving your breathing and having fun together.

“We don’t require you to audition or to be able to read music. As well as singing in the shower, come sing with us.”

Who is the Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch?

The Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch has been very active over the last four years holding public forums, documentary screenings, door knocks and stalls within the Lane Cove electorate to raise awareness.

Formed in 2014, Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch* is a non-political organisation dedicated to protecting the land, water, natural heritage and communities of NSW from the negative impacts of coal mining and coal seam gas.

Why? Because the balance between the costs and benefits to the NSW community are out of kilter. A voice is needed to raise awareness of the environmental and social issues and to ensure our politicians are listening to our farmers and rural communities, as well as the coal and gas companies.

From our surveys and petitions there is overwhelming support amongst the general public to stop coal seam gas in NSW and to cancel the licenses for coal mines on the fertile soils of the Liverpool

Some of the volunteers of Lane Cove Coal and Gas Watch recently door knocked 800 houses in Lane Cove, canvassing opinion about coal and gas mining.

Plains and green field sites such as Berrima in the Southern Highlands and the Bylong Valley in the Upper Hunter.

Another area of concern for the group is the undermining of swamps and tributaries in Sydney’s drinking water catchment from longwall coal mining, which is drying out swamps and redirecting water underground.

Thank you to IGA Greenwich Occasionally I shop at the IGA in Greenwich if I am using the Post Office two doors down.

This is not about me, but for the record I am currently on chemotherapy. For the uninitiated, this means tiredness, vagueness, and poor memory, among other things.

On Thursday 9th November, I bought the paper and some vegetables at the Greenwich IGA and then went home. Friday was not a good day, so I was asleep at 8pm when the doorbell went.

To my very sleepy amazement, one of the young girls who works at the IGA in Greenwich was standing there with a young man and my wallet (intact). I had not left the house since Thursday afternoon, so had not missed it, and would never have been mentally able to track it back to the IGA once realising it was gone.

I don’t know how to thank these people, other than to try to induce some public recognition for their honesty and care. I know they work long, hard hours, and I have been told they were refugees. They took the trouble to drive to my home after trading hours to find me.

On talking to Greenwich locals, I understand I am not the first to benefit from their observation skills and kindness.

I hope that in some way this incites some positive feedback for these lovely people and their business, and reminds many that honesty and kindness are still valuable assets in our increasingly busy lifestyles.

In October, the group took the clear-cut results to Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, who in his capacity as NSW Planning Minister is in a position to do something about this.

A stitch in time saves… the environment Creative talents were on show at the Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group’s recent Plaza stall.

Promotion of our local Responsible Cafes program together with KeepCup sales were combined with Lane Cove Boomerang Bags' first outdoor sewing bee.

We gave away lots of do-it-yourself sewing kits for people to make their own reusable shopping bags at home. Others stopped by to make one on the spot.

The Boomerang Bags always elicit a lot of interest from all ages. Our supply of selfsewed bags, made from donated material, helps replenish supplies to the BagShare bins therefore reducing the use of singleuse plastic bags in Lane Cove.
