This month The Village Observer turns 25 years old. Just in time for the birthday celebrations, our designer Sharon has been hard at work giving the magazine a makeover, which we are pleased to present to you this issue.

Since TVO’s launch in 1993, our community has seen a great deal of change. TVO has changed alongside and during this time has had a new owner; several Editors; transitioned from black and white to full colour; gone online; and many different advertisers and contributors have graced its pages over the past 276 issues.

As the team that produces TVO each month, Sharon, Mariano and myself are proud of the contribution that TVO makes not only in helping to connect our community, but also through its profits which help support aged and disability services within our community. Gill Batt's article on page 26 is one example of how these funds are used to help support the provision of local aged care services.

We look forward to taking TVO into its 26th year and beyond and would like to thank our readers, advertisers and contributors for their continued support.

We would also like to thank those readers who participated in last month’s readership survey. The feedback that we received is invaluable in helping us to continue to improve TVO. Based on your feedback, we will be introducing several new sections.

Starting this issue, you will notice a new monthly profile where we interview a local business owner; a new segment where readers are encouraged to send in a photo that captures an aspect of Lane Cove; and a new section where we profile an interesting local identity.

Following your requests, we will also be including more information on the environment, sustainability, sport and local history.

Thank you for your feedback Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the readership survey in last month’s The Village Observer. readership prefers it as a printed publication. In our fast-paced lifestyles, there is something to be said for being able to flick through the pages of a magazine over a cup of coffee, rather than quickly scrolling through grabs of information from a device.

A key takeout from our survey was that many of our readers were unaware that profits from The Village Observer are passed back into our local community through the aged and disability services provided by Sydney Community Services.

Each and every advertisement that appears in our magazine helps support the most vulnerable sectors of our community.

In addition to the written survey, TVO also conducted a focus group. Together, the feedback has been invaluable in enabling us to better understand what our readers like, dislike and potential improvements that we can make moving forward.

From the responses received, the majority of readers indicated that they consider TVO to be a good source of local information, with news and events and features discussing general interest issues and topics being the most popular sections. Information including What’s On and Bits & Pieces are also valued resources.

There were some excellent suggestions for new sections within the magazine which we will be introducing in future issues. Popular requests included adding more profiles on interesting community members, together with more information on the environment, sustainability, local history and restaurants.

In this digital age, there is always the looming question about whether continuing to print TVO rather than transitioning it into an online format is the right move.

The Village Observer has been owned by Lane Cove Community Aid Foundation for the past eight years. The Foundation contributes to the work of Sydney Community Services, which provides services to the aged and people living with a disability. This includes social activities, gardening, home nursing, podiatry, Community Care Advisor, linen service, home delivered meals, home modifications and maintenance, flexible respite, carers support, shopping services, community and engagement programs, medical transport and assistance in daily life.

TVO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS In August 1993, The Village Observer (TVO) was launched to “provide the residents of the municipality of Lane Cove with all the local news and information that is missing from big city newspapers.”

The brainchild of Ian Longbottom, the idea for a publication came about after Ian attended a dinner party and spoke with someone who had been unsuccessful in getting exposure to promote a local school.

“I wanted to develop a forum for community groups with limited funds to be able to distribute information and came up with the idea for a newspaper.

It was all about the Lane Cove community and encouraging people to support local business.”

For the next 17 years, Ian almost singlehandedly produced the black and white publication, circulating it to letterboxes throughout the area.

“I didn’t know how long it would last. We kept our overheads as low as possible. I would write and typeset it using Word, which was a bit limiting compared to desktop publishing programs available today, and my young sons would help me distribute the 15,000 copies.

“There were plenty of 2am mornings leading up to deadline. This was the era before email, so I would drive around town picking up photos and disks containing copy from contributors. Other contributors would fax handwritten articles to me, which I would then retype for publication.”

Ian was never afraid to tackle controversial issues, whether it be perennial hot topics such as parking, rubbish, and traffic, or matters discussed 8 TVO AUGUST 2018

during Council meetings in his ‘Minutes that take hours at Lane Cove’ column.

On the anniversary of its 50th issue in 1998, Ian wrote that when he started TVO, he had “no idea how long it might last. Suburban newspapers have come and gone over the years. Maybe that fate will one day happen to TVO, but we have survived well into our fifth year.

“Our survival is due to our loyal advertisers, our multitude of ‘correspondents’ and our intrepid readers.”

A change of ownership After 180 issues, Ian made the decision to sell TVO. In April 2010, he advertised the publication for sale, saying that “it needs someone new, with a fresh and vibrant approach, to take this ‘sixteen plus teenager’ through the rest of its teens and into adulthood.”

Several months later, TVO was purchased

by Lane Cove Community Aid Foundation which operates Sydney Community Services (formerly Lane Cove & North Side Community Services).

The Board of the Foundation recognised this as a good opportunity as it would help provide an additional source of funding, as well as provide a mechanism to keep the community updated on the important work of Sydney Community Services.

A new direction Over the past five years, TVO has been produced each month by a small team comprising Editor Jocelyn Biddle, Graphic Designer Sharon Curby and Advertising Manager Mariano Massa, overseen by Sydney Community Services’ CEO Gill Batt.

plays in engendering the sense of community that is quite special to Lane Cove, together with the important contribution that it makes to financially assisting vulnerable sectors of our community.

As a team, they have worked hard to modernise the magazine to increase its readership and to ensure that it is a relevant, interesting community publication.

This included launching TVO’s first major redesign in 2014. A new masthead was created.

Full colour was introduced throughout.

Features and new sections commenced including health, lifestyle, community and the Business Directory. The size and paper stock were changed. An online version was developed. The community responded positively and further improvements and changes have been ongoing.

Through a combination of more interesting articles and more attractive design, TVO’s relevance and appeal in an increasingly digital society has continued.

• The Village Observer announced a great masthead competition asking for designs for their paper.

• In 1993 Council took over the management of the Lane Cove Youth Centre (now Synergy).

The importance of our advertisers As Lane Cove continues to grow, it is forums such as TVO that become even more important in fostering a sense of community. The support of readers and advertisers has been essential to achieving this.

By advertising in TVO, local businesses not only directly reach their target market, but they are helping the most vulnerable sectors of our community.

Several advertisers have been with TVO from the outset, including Trendsetter Travel, Burns Bay Physiotherapy, Dr Tim David, Scott Chartered Accountants and Mortgage Choice.

New loyal advertisers have since joined including WHAT Hearing, Belle Property, Harbourline and Ray White. Lane Cove Council continues to be another very important supporter.

The team at TVO would like to thank all advertisers for their valued support and the role that they play in assisting the work of Sydney Community Services. 

Don’t miss Coffee Carnevale!

On Saturday 1st September, Lane Cove’s annual Coffee Carnevale event will celebrate our local coffee culture.

Now in its fifth year, the event is designed to share the work of local cafés with the wider community, encouraging residents to shop locally.

Free entertainment and activities run from 9.00am - 3.00pm. Take time to sample a new brew, be in-the-know about the latest coffee trends, take part in demonstrations and workshops or be entertained by a variety of family-friendly performances throughout the day.

New additions have been made to the Lane Cove Coffee Guide for 2018-19 with close to 40 coffee outlets featured.

The guide includes maps, descriptions and contact details for coffee haunts from Lane Cove West to Greenwich, Northwood, Riverview and everywhere in between. You can collect a copy of the guide on the day or to download a digital version on this page.

PLANNING COMMENCES ON COLES SITE Following the purchase of the Coles building on 56-60 Burns Bay Road in November 2017, the developer, Sun Property Pty Ltd, is exploring the redevelopment potential of the site.

The developer has proposed entering into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) with Council, which would enable them to construct and dedicate community space (approximately 1085 sqm) and parking within the development in exchange for Council’s land at the rear of the site (currently leased by Coles for carparking).

The VPA would incorporate this Council land into the proposed mixed-use development which comprises commercial (mini-major retail and specialty retail) and residential apartments in return for community space, including car parking.

The concept building for the site includes two storeys fronting Burns Bay Road, three storeys of residential mid site, and two storeys of residential to the rear, which sit on top of a large retail area and 2.3 levels of parking.

The proposed community space would be below street level, with a foyer on Burns Bay Road providing street access as well as access from the below ground car park.

Council needs to determine whether or not to accept the incorporation of Council’s land in the VPA in exchange for a community space.

55th Lane Cove Art Award The Municipality of Lane Cove 55th Art Award Exhibition opens at Gallery Lane Cove on Friday 10th August. More than 200 works by artists in a wide variety of mediums will be on display, competing for over $9,000 prize money.

A fundraising event for the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, admission is $5 on opening night and Mayor of Lane Cove Pam Palmer will present the awards.

The exhibition then continues until Saturday 18th August.

As lodgement of the DA is imminent and it is a requirement for the VPA to be advertised in conjunction with this, authority has been delegated to Council’s General Manager to agree on the proposed land value, based on advice from valuers, prior to giving notice of the intention to enter into a VPA. A community consultation process will then permit public submissions on the proposed VPA for 28 days from when the Development Application is advertised.

Council is also planning to undertake a study to develop options for Sera Street to deliver a higher level of functionality and safety as a road, and to provide appropriate access for properties should the ‘Coles site’ redevelopment proceed.

Coles will continue to lease the building until 2020. It is likely the development would take several years once they vacate.

New disability initiatives Work is ongoing to make Lane Cove a better place for people with disability to live, work and visit.

Through Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), a number of new initiatives have been released: ● A n Inclusion Award has been added as a new category in the 2018 Local Business Awards. ● A ccessible toilets are being provided and updated as buildings are renovated according to building standards.

NO ORDINARY BIN Residents might have noticed two new bins located outside the Library in Lane Cove.

Part of a new trial, the two bins (one for general waste and one for recyclables including plastic, glass and aluminium) are fitted with a solar powered compactor so that they can hold up to five times the amount of a regular bin. Operated by sensor, once each bin reaches a certain level, the rubbish is compacted. The bins also have a foot pedal, so you don’t have to touch dirty lids to throw in your rubbish.

Another two compacting bins will be installed at Blackman Park. The trial will determine whether the logistics and efficiency gains from the bins are worthwhile before rolling out more around the area.

● A Changing Spaces facility will be built in the new Rosenthal Project to provide facilities for people needing a hoist and table for personal care, as well as a shower facility. ● Wording in both the guidelines and application form for the Community Grants program have been changed to ensure the projects are inclusive of people with disability. ● H ughes Park on Waterview Drive is accessible and includes a playground for all ages, barbeque facilities, picnic tables, a community garden and outdoor fitness equipment. It also has a braille trail.

Flannerys joins Lane Cove A thriving health food store has just opened in the site of the former About Life on Burns Bay Road.

Flannerys is a natural and organic wholefoods market that has been in business for over 30 years. Starting out as a single health food store on the Gold Coast, Flannerys has now made its way to Sydney, opening stores in Crows Nest, Bondi, and most recently, Lane Cove.

Flannerys has worked closely with the local About Life team throughout the transition. It offers the best in health food and lifestyle products and is passionate about sharing knowledge about good food and health, with a Nutritionist and Naturopath in store to give free advice. Other offerings include a beauty and kin care range, organic bulk wholefoods section, and products and services for new mums.

Everything used in their café, through to their shopping and produce bags, are made out of 100% plant based materials.

Open now, Flannerys Lane Cove will also host an official opening on Saturday 11th August.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Colin Holt HUDSON MEATS NOW THE ONLY BUTCHER LOCATED IN THE LANE COVE PLAZA AREA, TVO SPOKE WITH COLIN TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT HIS BUSINESS.

What attracted you to Lane Cove?

This area was a great fit for our business as it is so family oriented. We’ve noticed that people on the North Shore tend to entertain at home more - certainly compared to the eastern suburbs - and they appreciate good quality produce. Our customers are quite educated about food and they have become more experimental, particularly as a result of watching shows like MasterChef.

What makes Hudson Meats different?

We always source top quality product and we know where it comes from, as we maintain relationships with many of the farmers who supply our products. We help to educate our customers as well, answering questions and giving suggestions and advice on what they are buying.

All of our egg, poultry, meat and dairy products come from animals that have been raised on green pasture. This means that the products are not only healthier for you, but this practice promotes and improves the welfare of animals, helps put an end to environmental degradation, supports small-scale farmers making a living from the land and assists with sustaining rural communities.

How would you describe the current business environment?

Lane Cove is tough at the moment. Since the Rosenthal development started construction, our business has fallen 15% - less carparking has meant less customers. Having said that, we have just renewed our lease, so we are very hopeful that once the development is complete, business will grow.

What’s one thing people wouldn’t know about you?

Colin Holt has dedicated his career to food.

A trained chef, Colin decided to enter the world of butchery after recognising a clear gap between the quality of the meat being made available to the restaurant trade compared to the retail market.

Colin launched his first Hudson Meats store in Surry Hills in 2007 (“I needed a strong brand – the meat packing district in New York is on the Hudson River, so this was the inspiration behind our name.”) Cammeray followed, before Holt opened the Lane Cove store in 2009 within the Market Square arcade. Mosman and Drummoyne stores opened thereafter.

Before I started Hudson Meats, I worked as a chef for some of Sydney's top restaurants including Chez Oz, Claude's and Bistro Moncur. In the 90’s I had my own restaurant Bistro Pave - in North Sydney and I picked up two chef's hats in The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Awards.

If you could change one thing about Lane Cove, what would it be?

The parking situation…and also the infrastructure, so that it is easier to get into and out of Longueville Road.

What 4 words would you use to describe Lane Cove…

1. Family. 2. Children. 3. Alive. 4. Buzzy

RECIPE

Colin’s slow cooked lamb shoulder SERVES 4-5

INGREDIENTS

1 lamb shoulder 375ml verjuice 365ml veal glace 8 eschallots - peeled

METHOD

2 cloves of garlic - crushed

n H eat half the olive oil in a large pot and brown the lamb shoulder.

Remove the lamb shoulder from pot and set aside.

3 tblspns Hudson Meats olive oil 6 sprigs of thyme 2 bay leaf 1 lemon (zest & juice) 1 bunch flat leaf parsley Pepper Salt

n Add the remaining olive oil to the pot and lightly sauté eschallots and garlic. n A dd the verjuice and lightly simmer for approx. 2 mins.

Add the veal glace/stock and place the lamb shoulder back in the pot.

Add the thyme, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Place lid on top of pot and put into a pre-heated oven of 120C. Allow 5 hours cooking time on a low heat. n R emove from heat and place the lamb shoulder and juices from the pan into a serving dish. Sprinkle the lemon zest over the lamb shoulder.

Squeeze the juice of the lemon over the lamb shoulder.

Garnish with roughly chopped flat leaf parsley. n Serve with roasted kumera and garlic greens.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Absolutely fabulous!

Everyone who has noticed Tutti and Paul Bennett would agree that they bring joie de vivre to the streets of Lane Cove.

Having lived locally for 38 years, their flamboyance and flair is unmissable. Each day, Tutti curates an inimitable outfit, mixing and matching with colour and often with her signature headscarf.

“For me, it’s innate. I love putting clothes together and giving things a different look. I’ve never liked following the crowd – I’ve always dressed to please myself.”

This style has led to the couple being noticed not only locally, but internationally. They were recently photographed to be included in a book entitled ‘Advanced Love’, which is due for release later this year.

The book is being produced by Los Angeles-based photographer and author, Ari Seth Cohen. Ari is the creator of Advanced Style, a project devoted “to capturing the sartorial savvy of the senior set.” Through his work, Ari shows that you can be stylish, creative and vital at any age.

“Ari visited Australia to attend a Vogue exhibition launch. He stayed with us for a few days and took a range of photos, though we’re not sure which one he will select for the book.”

Tutti and Paul raised their two daughters – Sonia and CecilyAnna – in Lane Cove and the couple can often be seen up at the village together with their three-year old granddaughter Marnie.

“My goal in life has been to embarrass my children,” says Tutti. It would seem that there have been moments where she has successfully achieved this. For example, the outfit that she put together for Cecily-Anna’s year 5 school social.

“It was almost like an epiphany when I viewed this someone - almost like from another planet. Tutti was so different to anyone that I had ever dated,” says Paul.

After only a few months, the couple married. That was 41 years ago.

In Paul’s desire to ‘save the world’, he wrote and published ‘The Cranky Guru; Adventures in Metaphysics’ in 2014.

“This book has been my contribution to what makes things tick, how to live a life of abundance - to be able to do what you want to do when you want to do it - where we can engage mind, thoughts, intent and passions.”

The couple have seen many changes to Lane Cove in the decades they have lived here.

“When all the other kids were wearing stone-washed denim, I wore a bright yellow and black leopard print shift dress with matching hot pants, overlaid with a black tulle skirt and sleeveless denim jacket, complete with leopard print collar and pocket,” explains Cecily-Anna.

“Change is a beautiful thing,” says Paul. “It has been great to see the explosion in the number of young families to the area (Paul has affectionately coined the astro turf area in the Plaza as the ‘human petri dish’) and to see so many people out and about.”

Tutti was brought up not to worry about what other people think. Growing up within the only Jewish family in Bathurst in the 1950’s, the family didn’t bow to convention.

One cannot come away after meeting Tutti and Paul without feeling inspired. The energy and vitality that they express through their clothing is reflective of their attitude to life.

“There was a lot of xenophobia there at that time. I admire my parents for standing out.”

If only they could bottle this formula, it would be a best seller… 

At 21, Tutti left Bathurst and became a trainee in the fashion department at David Jones. Overseas travel followed and Tutti says that it was then that she really became her own person, dressing as she wished and having the courage ‘to be me’.

Meanwhile husband Paul, who grew up in Brisbane, was studying graphic design in London. On returning to Australia, Brisbane felt too small so a move to Sydney followed.

It was a chance meeting at a Jewish party in 1975 that saw their two worlds collide.

LCHS TO AWARD $2000 FOR HISTORY PRIZE With $2000 to be awarded to the winner of this year’s History Prize, the Lane Cove Historical Society is expecting plenty of new entries for 2018.

Supported by Hyecorp, the Prize is now in its third year. Past entries have provided moving and entertaining evidence of the lives of local people.

As one the earliest sites of settlement on the northern side of the harbour, colonial Lane Cove has had a very interesting history, and much of the details have yet to be fully documented.

A successful entry must document aspects of the lives of people in Lane Cove and its environs, including areas beyond modern Lane Cove which covered a broader area in the past.

Research subjects can be individuals or families; early settlers or ethnic groups in the region; the evolution of local roads and transport systems, private or public buildings; or the histories of community groups such as sporting teams, bush care or local churches.

Submissions can be written essays, oral histories or audio/visual works. A selection of entries have been published in an annual Special Edition of the LCHS Journal and last year's entries are now available in the June 2018 LCHS Journal Special Edition.

Keeping our ‘Pleasantville’ tag Twelve years ago my son (then aged 15) came home from school and announced in disgust “you know they call Lane Cove Pleasantville don’t you!”

As a would-be ‘man about town’, my son was appalled that we lived in a family friendly, community-oriented suburb rather than an edgier, hip locale.

Now in his late twenties and looking forward to having a family of his own, my son happily concedes that Lane Cove was indeed a great place to grow up in.

Much has changed in our suburb in recent years. A new shopping center and green space, plus new restaurants and bars will change the face of Lane Cove, providing a host of wonderful facilities and making it even more desirable to live in.

Ultimately it will come down us, as individuals, to keep Lane Cove as the friendly suburb I’ve had the privilege to live in for the past twenty years.

In the latest 2018 United Nations World Happiness Report, Australia ranked 10 out of 156 countries. And while this is a positive result, it was interesting to note that we had slipped from 9th to 10th place. The US fared considerably poorer, dropping four places from 14th to 18th.

So what can we learn from the latest report?

In my opinion, we need to take happiness more seriously, both as individuals and as a community.

Research has shown time and again that people who have a happier and more optimistic view of life tend to: live longer; are more resilient; recover better and quicker from trauma; heal from injury and illness quicker; have better relationships; are attractive to others, and fare better at work.

So why aren’t we more serious about being happy?

Recently I conducted my own informal survey of Lane Cove residents around the concept of happiness. I found that many considered the pursuit of their own happiness frivolous, selfish or something they didn’t have time to focus on just now. Others thought the attainment of a goal or achievement (for example, retirement, job promotion, 16 TVO AUGUST 2018

travel, paying off the mortgage) would bring them happiness.

However none of these responses ring true when studies have clearly shown otherwise.

Long regarded as the founder of positive psychology, Martin Seligman has written many books and academic papers on the subject and from these and other writings on the topic, I’ve garnered some very simple yet profound truths about happiness and optimism.

What makes us happy: • Our connection and positive relationships with others • Giving of ourselves (altruism) • Taking time to do the things that make us happy • Gratitude In short, happiness isn’t rocket science - it comes down to a commitment,

every day, to actively seek it. It takes very little time, however it does take practice. Would you enter a marathon after training for one day? Of course not.

Happiness, like fitness, is something that builds over time and with practice.

Here are some tips for improving your happiness every day: • In your dealing with others, make eye contact. Don’t just listen, hear what the person is saying and let them know this by your words and actions. Don’t just wait for the chance to have your say.

• Pay honest compliments and look for opportunities to do so … to those who serve you, to the person who delivers a parcel, to the man/woman on the street.

When someone says, “you’ve made my day”, you’ve also made your own day happier.

• Be grateful every day. Keeping a gratitude diary in which you note three things for which you are grateful for each day, reminds you of things you may take for granted. Over time gratitude becomes a natural part of your way of thinking.

• Help others when you can. A simple gesture such as letting an older person before you in a queue or asking if someone needs help when you see them struggling is enough to make their day and yours.

• Take a little time to do something you enjoy every day, not just when you have time. For example, put on some good music when you arrive home from work, read a chapter of a good book or just give yourself some space for a few minutes to breath. Make it a habit.

Over time these simple practices will, I promise you, make a difference to your life and in turn the lives of others. 

THE FLOSSING ‘CONTROVERSY’ A story filed by Associated Press in 2016 caused a lot of discussion, reporting that there was no evidence that flossing between teeth has any impact at all on the incidence of tooth decay.

This followed a study published in the British Dental Journal in 2006 that found that there was no difference in the number of cavities in people who flossed and those who didn’t.

Should I throw out my floss?

So, do we have cause to doubt the research? No, as surprising as that may sound. The real question that needs to be asked is how reliable the research can ever be, and what is the research actually saying? Read on before you decide to bin your floss.

The first thing the research is telling us is that the evidence for flossing is very weak. The second thing it tells us is that the results of flossing are so inconclusive that flossing can neither be endorsed or disproven.

The problem with flossing experiments is that it is very difficult, if not impossible,

when studying a population to isolate the act of flossing from other tooth-damaging habits such as smoking, high sugar consumption and acid consumption. Also, this kind of study needs to run for a greater number of years before proper conclusions can be made.

Critically, the studies talk about the incidence of cavities in flossers and non-flossers, but they don’t appear to talk about the incidence of gum disease, which is really a much more serious condition as it has proven links to systemic health issues.

Does technique matter?

Yes! Tellingly, the one study that actually proved that flossing conferred a benefit involved schoolchildren whose teeth were flossed five days a week by a professional hygienist. In other words, their teeth were flossed correctly. This study alone serves to virtually discredit all other studies, as it appears to be the only one that involved flossing being done properly. All others were observational studies that did little to sift out external factors that will potentially have a massive effect on the

final observation, foremost being poor technique.

What’s the take home message?

If you want to keep your teeth by avoiding gum disease, keep flossing.

If you want to avoid cavities, brushing and flossing are of some value, but the majority of your protection will come from avoidance of dietary sugar.

Everything else, including fluoride application, is there to help us negate the effects of the Western diet we choose to consume.

Visit the dentist or hygienist every six months. They will keep on top of your home care techniques and help to point out any technique issues, provide ongoing dietary advice to help you avoid cavities, remove plaque and tartar deposits that have escaped your otherwise thorough home care routine, and finally identify any issues such as gum disease and cavities before they have a chance to develop into significant problems. 

Stroke A stroke is like a lightning strike to the brain, disrupting multiple bodily functions via their damaged control mechanisms in the cortex.

The symptoms of stroke vary from mild to devastating.

Sometimes the lights go out permanently. A big stroke can cause rapid death.

A transient ischaemic attack, or TIA, is a mini stroke where symptoms resolve completely within 24 hours. Sometimes TIA’s are multiple over time and can cause significant creeping loss of function. One outcome of this is Multi Infarct Dementia. TIA’s are a warning and need immediate medical attention.

Beware! Sometimes a major stroke follows one of these – a phenomenon sometimes seen in both stroke types.

What are the causes of stroke?

Hippocrates recognised stroke over 2,400 years ago and called it apoplexy, a translation from the Greek meaning ‘struck down with violence’. In the mid 1600’s, Jacob Wepfer found that some patients dying of stroke had blood in the brain. Finally, in 1928, apoplexy recognised blood vessel blockage and blood vessel bleeding as forms of stroke.

The term for stroke in medicine is CVA or cerebrovascular accident. That’s respectively the brain tissue and its blood vessel supply. The brain is served by four arteries - the two carotids at the front of the neck and the two vertebral arteries that run either side in the bony spine.

What is a stroke?

According to Professor Murtagh “A stroke occurs when an area of the brain is damaged by an interruption to its blood supply”. This results in deterioration of functions - mental or physical - that are controlled by that particular part of the brain. It’s something like throwing water on your switchboard at home. Devastating.

There are three kinds of stroke.

A thrombosis is a clot of blood or a lump of fatty and fibrous tissue from an artery wall within the brain that suddenly swells and blocks an artery that serves a particular part of the brain.

An embolus is a chunk of material or blood clot that comes from another part of the body. Material may come from a blood clot, a defective heart valve, fat liberated during injury or surgery and broken off chunks of thickened tissue lining an artery elsewhere in the body.

A bubble of air that lodges in the brain is usually only see in SCUBA divers with holes in the heart wall.

A bleeding or haemorrhagic stroke from a ruptured brain blood vessel develops when a swollen and thinned section of artery, usually an aneurism, breaks open and bleeds into the surrounding brain.

These are usually vicious.

What conditions predispose stroke?

The list covers many of the common ones found in the West. High blood pressure is up there, along with high

cholesterol and diabetes. Others include smoking, heart disease, and abnormal usually irregular - rhythms of the heart.

Finally, damaged heart valves from diseases such as rheumatic fever can throw off emboli. Hmmm, some sound a bit like me. How about you?

Sudden unconsciousness means a major CVA. There may be confusion, sudden loss of speech, inability to move parts of the body, sudden loss of balance or dizziness and sudden loss of vision or double and/or blurred vision. Others include a quickly worsening headache, while a sudden massive headache is called a ‘thunder clap’ headache.

Thunder clap headache sufferers should call 000 for an ambulance and go straight to hospital. Trouble walking, losing the use of arms, legs or hands and numbness can occur. These may range from mild to gross, so don’t let minor symptoms fool you. Sorry about all the ‘suddens’ but things do happen suddenly in stroke.

How can I avoid a stroke in the future?

You don’t have to be a Saint - just sensible. Get a check-up and make sure you control that high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Stop smoking!

Meds via your Doc can help you there.

Take 100mg of aspirin daily (though not all doctors agree). Try and get that weight down and exercise regularly. Brisk walking is simple, cheap, convenient and effective.

Treatment requires urgent hospital admission and assessment. An injection is given to dissolve the clot and to stem an evolving stroke. 

RUN FOR FUN! The Lane Cove Fun Run is on again! Now in its third year, this familyfriendly event event is now a firm fixture on the social and exercise calendar. Locals are invited to run (or walk) either 2km or 5km through the streets of Longueville.

In 2018, the Fun Run will support two charities who provide services and support to children in need - The Pyjama Foundation (which offers a learning-based mentoring program free to children in foster care) and KYDS (helping young people with anxiety, bullying, depression, family and relationship problems, risky behaviours and self-harm). Remaining proceeds go towards providing facilities and equipment for the teachers and students at Lane Cove Public School.

Young Australian athlete Beth Croft will be there to participate. Beth does a great job in the lead up to the event encouraging younger runners.

Encouraging community, family, fun and a healthy lifestyle for everyone, participants are encouraged to dress up - dogs are also welcome in wave 2 of the 2km event.

Date: Sunday 9th September Time: 7:30am for the 5km event 8:30am for the 2km event Place: Starting and finishing point is Kingsford Smith Oval, Longueville.

The atmosphere at Kingsford Smith oval before and after the event is always great. Runners are encouraged to stay afterwards to meet up with friends and neighbours, to meet the local community business sponsors at their stalls and enjoy the breakfast market.

The breakfast market will include the popular BBQ stall with bacon and egg rolls and sausages, a coffee cart from Jack and Co plus more. Four Frogs Creperie Lane Cove will also join this year, making fresh crepes for hungry runners.

Unlike previous years, there is no 10km event for 2018, though organisers are working with Council to assess possible alternative routes so that it can potentially be resumed in 2019.

Sponsorship and race fees go towards event costs such as the cost of extensive road closures, safety staff, St John’s Ambulance, official race timing and race bibs.

The Alcott opens its doors After much anticipation, The Alcott has joined the food scene in Lane Cove, with many locals attending the launch function in July.

Already proving itself as a popular destination, for many it’s the first time they’ve stepped foot into the building in Birdwood Avenue, which had been the home of the Lane Cove Club for over 60 years.

The venue has had a radical transformation with a stylish fitout that offers a range of different areas to eat, drink and catch up with friends.

Now part of the NORTHS (North Sydney Leagues Club) stable, which also operates the Greens in North Sydney, The Alcott has a great vibe. Lounge areas merge with booths, tables and bar areas. It was a bright sunny day as we took off from Camden airfield in our little Cessna. We climbed steadily to 8000 feet and by this time a faint mist could be seen below. We jumped out and immediately realised the mist was really rain. From above, the earth looked dark. The raindrops were racing up at us like silver bullets. It was quite painful and I was becoming soaked. I opened the parachute and suddenly I was falling slower than the raindrops.

It was strange to look out and see the raindrops falling ever so slowly beside the parachute.

Carpe Diem Life, love, the desire to help, to be a good fellow citizen and to be at one with others as we journey life’s byways here or overseas is surely what we all seek.

and like Princess Diana and all famous people who die young, they became immortalised as much for what they did and for what they might have done, had there been more time.

However not all are so lucky. At Oak Plantation, an antebellum mansion in the style of Gone with the Wind, the slaves who worked the fields to ensure the prosperity of their masters and mistresses have their births and deaths recorded by a single first name. Here today, gone tomorrow, just another (human) widget perhaps. I hope not.

That history records their fortitude, their stoicism, their achievements in the face of all odds, and inspires we who have so much more to improve our world.

Those who gave their lives for kin and country are justifiably honoured and almost celebrated, often anonymously.

War is horrid yet each country with war dead rightfully acknowledges the many via a Memorial to the Unknown Soldier. Again, in southern American the Civil War graveyards provide a sombre reminder of how fleeting life can be but clothed in green, with spring flowers abundant, they remind us of the rebirth of hope, of renewal.

For a multitude of reasons, the spectre of death has not been far from my mind of late. And possibly yours too. We’ve all just been treated to the miracle that was the cave rescue in Thailand and how great was our jubilation and relief when the last team member - the coach - was brought out.

As a parent and sibling myself, how could I not feel for the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, and school friends too, of the Wild Boars?

Life seemed to hang in the balance, especially when one of the SEALs died.

It really did sheet home to everyone what a dangerous mission this was.

If we were not already convinced, we were now.

Collectively we felt in awe of the result, with gratitude for the skills and sense of

humanity that the multinational rescue effort demonstrated. If there is one thing that social media and advances in telecommunications have brought us, it is the sense of immediacy and closeness to the drama of major events as they unfold. The precariousness of life is never more obvious when we feel ourselves there, in the moment.

In April I cruised on the Mississippi River, bookended by stays in Memphis and New Orleans. In Memphis I revisited Gracelands, the former home and now memorial resting place of Elvis. This very same city was the scene of Martin Luther King’s assassination fifty years ago on April 04, 1968. MLK’s life and work is celebrated, very poignantly, at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel and I revisited here too. Both men died way too early,

Macabre it might seem to some but there is much in travel that focuses on death, or rather has death as a subtheme. David, my fellow Trendsetter director, has a passion for military history and runs small, specialised Military History tours which explore the theatre of war, and by association, death.

They’re not for everyone, but those passionate for this niche love them.

And how often have you read that a cemetery visit is on the must-do list?

Diana’s crypt at Althorp; Karl Marx (and recently George Michael) at Highgate Cemetery in London; Oscar Wilde, Chopin and Edith Piaf at Pere Lachaise in Paris; Eva Peron at in Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires…

Rest in peace is what we say but not necessarily what we allow those whose resting places we seek to visit.

For me, the great story in July however was that what might have become a cemetery did not. The caves of Chiang Rai will become a tourist hotspot for celebrating all that is good in this world.

Life, love, the desire to help, to be a good fellow citizen and to be at one with others as we journey life’s byways here or overseas is surely what we all seek.

Each day we are given the chance to start anew, to share with and learn from others at home or abroad. Life is short – let’s make the most of it and get out and explore our world.  TVO AUGUST 2018 23

Greenwich park named after community minded local Mary Carlson Park in Greenwich was named for an outstanding woman, her contributions to the community and her family’s long connection to the Greenwich area.

The park, originally part of Greenwich Point Reserve, was re-named in 1999 following a petition by local citizens to Lane Cove Council.

Robina Mary Carlson (known as Mary) was a granddaughter of Greenwich pioneers, Frederick and Bridget Carlson.

Frederick Carlson was an able bodied seaman of Swedish origins. He arrived in Sydney on the Africana in 1866 about age 22. The family legend recalled he ran away to sea to avoid an arranged marriage, and his parents were said to be wealthy ship owners plying the route from Sweden to America.

In 1869 Frederick married Bridget Mary Kennelly, an Irish immigrant, and they settled in Balmain where their first son was born in 1870. By the time their second son arrived in 1873, they were living at Greenwich, settling in a stone cottage in St Lawrence Street (which was sometimes known as St Leonards Street between 1879-1898).

Frederick owned two sailing ships that carried goods from Balmain to as far as Newcastle. The 1879 and 1880 Sands Directory lists him as a shipwright in St Leonards Street, Greenwich.

In June 1880, tragedy struck when a fire broke out at the family’s cottage.

Frederick injured his leg when he fell from the roof while trying to douse the flames. His wound became gangrenous and he died a week later at the age of 33. Bridget, widowed with four young sons and a daughter, initially returned to Balmain before reestablishing her family in Greenwich, where she owned three cottages. In 1893 she built two of the terrace houses in St Lawrence Street, adding the next two in 1897. She had planned to build a fifth one, one for each of her children, but it was not built by the time of her death in 1902.

Bridget was a pioneering woman of the district. While she rented out her extra cottages, she also worked as a laundress to support her children. A devout Catholic family, they would regularly walk across the log bridge at Wollstonecraft to attend mass at North Sydney and the children crossed the river to attend school at St Augustine’s in Balmain. Bridget was one of the 306 signatories to the second petition for local self-government in 1893, which resulted in the establishment of the Lane Cove Municipality in 1895.

Frederick and Bridget’s granddaughter, Mary Carlson (Robina Mary), the daughter of George and Robina, was born at Greenwich in 1901. Mary was only seven when her mother died and she was subsequently raised with the assistance of her uncle and aunt, William and Amelia Carlson.

Following their death, Mary took over their terrace at 22 St Lawrence Street, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Mary devoted her life to the service of others and had a lifelong commitment to the Greenwich community where her warmth, generosity and welcoming nature endeared her to all. She was an active and devout parishioner at Our Lady of Dolours Catholic Church, Greenwich, and tireless worker for St Vincent de Paul Society. Mary was also a foundation member and committee member of the Greenwich Senior Citizen Centre for many years. She assisted with history and photographs when the Local Studies collection was established at Lane Cove Library during the 1980s. Outside the local area she was a regular visitor at Sydney Hospital and helped with Meals on Wheels in the city.

Mary died in 1997, aged 96, having occupied one of the St Lawrence Street terraces all her life. Her funeral service was held at Our Lady of Dolours Church, Greenwich and she was buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery.

Following Mary’s death, the Greenwich community petitioned Council to identify a patch of parkland by naming it in her honour. The park is situated at Greenwich Point overlooking the bay where her grandfather regularly moored his ship’s dingy. It was officially named Mary Carlson Park by Lane Cove Mayor, Anthony Roberts, on 19th December 1999. 

POWERS OF ATTORNEY Choosing the best person for the job A power of attorney is a legal document made by one person that allows another person to act on the first person’s behalf in respect of their money, bank accounts, shares, real estate and other assets.

A General Power of Attorney is usually for a short-term appointment, say if you are going into hospital or on an overseas trip. It ceases to have effect if you lose your mental capacity. An Enduring Power of Attorney is for a lifetime appointment and will still operate in the case of mental incapacity. In both cases, the Power of Attorney will only cover your financial affairs and only operates while you are alive.

Who to choose as your attorney An attorney can do anything with your property and money that you are able to do, so it is important that you choose someone you can trust. You can appoint more than one person and can specify whether the attorneys must act jointly (making all decisions together) or jointly

and severally (either making decisions together or individually).

Whilst partners and adult children are commonly appointed, trusted friends, siblings, grandchildren, nieces or nephews may also be appropriate.

In making your decision, you should consider qualities such as the ability to manage financial and property-related matters, availability and physical proximity.

If no family member is suitable or available, an independent third party such as the NSW Trustee & Guardian, a trustee company or a professional such as a solicitor or accountant can be appointed, but they will be entitled to charge for these services.

With great power comes great responsibility ‘Inheritance impatience’ is a driver of elder financial abuse and often occurs when family members misuse their powers in their role as attorney. Your attorney must always act honestly and avoid conflicts between their interests and yours. They must keep your money and property separate from their own and act in your interests at all times.

Don’t put it off You never know what the future may bring. Although mental incapacity may not be a foreseeable issue, you might regularly travel overseas, require major surgery or simply do not wish to personally manage aspects of your affairs. If you don’t have a Power of Attorney in place and subsequently lose capacity, there will be nobody with legal authority to manage or make decisions about your property and finances. A court application for the appointment of a financial manager may need to be made, who may not necessarily be the person you would have chosen. 

BEHIND THE VENEER OF AFFLUENCE… Lane Cove and Hunters Hill are often described as beautiful, leafy and affluent suburbs.

But behind some of those grand exteriors and down the bottom of some roads and streets there are many people living in circumstances far from beautiful or affluent. heat their house or unit. Often some of our older pensioners are in private rented accommodation where the rent takes up to 90% of their pension. Just finding enough money to eat is difficult and there are a number of Lane Cove residents who we help out with meals on wheels at no charge. We are also able to offer occasional support for bills or a supermarket gift card. But we don’t have any funding for this and we rely on kind donations from local people.

Here at Sydney Community Services we have stopped being shocked when we find the dire situations some people face every day.

Hoarding and squalor are not very nice words, but more houses and apartments than you may think include rooms where it is impossible to enter and defy description. No one sets out to live that way and it creeps up on them.

Embarrassed, they are reluctant to allow people to enter their houses - by the time we go in, it is often at breaking point.

Other people are just scraping by, unable to afford to eat properly or

I’m on the Board of Pottery Gardens, a unique special block of affordable housing units built 50 years ago using funds from Federal and State Governments and Lane Cove Council.

Rents are just 25% of the pension and the units, though small, are well maintained and situated in the centre of Lane Cove. There is always a waiting list of applicants, all with compelling stories of need and close links to Lane Cove.

In our Hunters Hill office, we have cupboards of essential food items which we can offer to those unable to afford a meal. Sometimes this is a family who has unexpectedly lost employment and need something to tide them over to the next job or payday. This is food donated by local groups who understand that

behind the veneer of affluence, there are always people “doing it tough.”

What can you do to help? We have one very kind local benefactor who donates a monthly amount, but that is already completely allocated each month.

Could you offer a regular sum? Or even just a once off contribution? We are a registered charity and all donations are tax deductable.

You could also consider leaving us something in your Will.

I don't miss the old grey plastic bags though. They only hold three or four items at once, so you look like a mobile rubbish dump. Canned goods always settle on top of bread, firing at your feet like rubber bullets when you open the boot. Fizzy drinks turn flat and roll under the back seat, sometimes lost for weeks. Consumers don't mind a contract shift, but both the environment and their back pocket is still suffering.

Sharing spaces With over 3000 dogs registered with Lane Cove Council, our open spaces are being utilised now more than ever to exercise and socialise our canine friends.

For dog owners, it is really important that they respect and comply with rules around whether public spaces are designated as either on or off leash.

According to Council, the demand for access to both on leash and off leash areas at our sports grounds and open space areas is ever increasing.

Our local parks also attract residents of other localities who bring their dogs to Lane Cove for exercise and recreation.

There are currently 17 different parks and reserves across the Lane Cove LGA where people are allowed to take their dog off leash (see www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/offleash for full details).

Outside of these areas, dogs are required to be on a leash, with fines for dog owners that do not comply. Various penalties apply, but generally as per s12A (1) of the Companion Animals Act, there is a $220 fine where a dog is Not Under Effective Control, ie. not on a leash or secured.

Lane Cove Council’s 2018/19 Operational and Delivery Plan outlines a commitment to improve some existing spaces and that it also intends to consult with the community about any new identified spaces that may be possible to convert to offleash areas in the future.

Can I let my dog off leash in bushland?

The short answer is no. Although the bush tracks throughout Lane Cove are a great place to exercise our dogs, they must be on a lead.

Ian Partridge has been a local bushcare volunteer for over 20 years and says that there are several issues associated with dog owners allowing their animals to run free.

time in the bush and usually there are no issues as they have them on a lead. However, occasionally we see dogs running off leash, generally ahead of their owner so that the owner isn’t aware what they’re up to – whether they are going off the designated tracks and chasing wildlife or going to the toilet which we may later step or kneel in as we work.”

Ian says that the Lane Cove bushland is home to a wide array of ground dwelling birds and reptiles including bower birds, turkeys, wrens, ducks, skinks, water dragons and even echidnas which can be disrupted by dogs who run through the bush away from the main tracks. Even the dog’s scent can discourage native wildlife to use an area for their habitat or food source.

Additional risks of letting dogs off lead in bushland include an increased chance of them picking up ticks, or eating fox droppings which can spread disease. Dogs can also disperse weed seeds that become stuck to their coat when running through the bush.

“There is no bushland in Lane Cove where you are allowed to take your dog off leash and this rule exists for very good reason. Fortunately, most dog walkers adhere to the rules,” says Ian. Owners exercising their dog in shared use parks such as sports fields or off leash areas need to take responsibility to avoid any likelihood of their dog reacting to other users.

On average, Council formally deals with up to 4 or 5 dog attack/ dog rushing matters each year. Off leash or nuisance dogs can be reported to Council via the Snap Send Solve app, which will enable them to actively deal with dog owners who don’t do the right thing. 

There goes the neighbourhood… and it’s getting worse!

IT CAN’T HAVE ESCAPED YOUR NOTICE THAT LANE COVE IS BULGING WITH HIGH DENSITY DEVELOPMENT. The 2011 Census showed that nearly half our occupied dwellings (43.6%) were flats, units or apartments. Now comes the push for more medium density with the State Government’s little treat for the developers - Complying Development.

The Government’s new Low Rise Medium Density Code came into force in July and provides fast track complying development for “one or two storey dual occupancy.” That means terrace houses, town houses and manor houses, permitted only in areas where Council’s Local Environmental Plans (LEP) allow medium density development.

The new Code could have had serious impacts on Lane Cove’s low density residential neighbourhoods (R2) had Planning Minister Roberts not granted Council an exemption, but only until the very lengthy government ‘Gateway process’ to amend our LEP is negotiated (as Lane Cove had historically permitted single storey villas in its R2 zone).

Of much more concern is complying development itself. This was initially a strategy to allow people to build truly low impact development - a backyard barbecue or replace a side fence etc. - so not to use valuable Council time or residents’ money. Complying development for single dwelling houses was introduced some time ago. The rationale seemed to be that replacing the family home was low impact so ‘mums and dads’ needn’t waste money on a development application.

Complying development means that if your proposal meets the criteria, you can go ahead and build - you must notify your neighbours but they can’t object.

Problems occur when people build something different (higher, closer to the boundary etc), or if the new house blocks neighbours’ sunlight or overlooks the back garden. Once the neighbours realise, it’s too late and it’s very rare for a Court to rule against them.

Medium density complying development brings all these risks, but on a larger scale. If developers consolidate land, they might build twenty or so terrace or manor houses in a single street. We will lose even more single dwelling houses, trees and vegetation, so neighbourhoods will change.

The purpose of complying development is to provide a swift, smooth, cheaper path for development and Sydney’s rapidly growing population. Suburbs like Lane Cove are targeted because we are close to the city and major job hubs like Macquarie Park. It allows developers to proceed without the drain of neighbour or community objections that may require negotiation or modification to plans.

Fast track development is not concerned about environment or amenity; the first casualties are the trees and backyards that make us ‘leafy Lane Cove.’ The unprotected units become hotboxes requiring air conditioning and clothes driers because the buildings and garages take the whole site, leaving no room for clothes lines, trees or gardens.

While most of us might prefer medium, rather than still more high-density development in Lane Cove, it’s possible that the new Low Rise Medium Density Code is a stalking horse for the next phase where apartment buildings up to eight or ten stories will be declared ‘medium density’ and their developers will want to be included in the Complying Development Code.

The only thing that can put the brakes on this is people power. It’s up to you to tell our politicians that we don’t want our suburbs destroyed by excessive development. 

It’s always busy when I pass the front desk in the foyer of the Civic Centre. This is because every day Council is responding to a large number of enquiries and service requests be it in person, on-site, over the phone or by email. Over the next 12 months we will be upgrading our Customer Request Management System to better handle all this information as well as introducing new resources to ensure a smoother service for all.

This involves addressing the need for better communications and adherence to Council’s service standards through a Customer Concierge role. We have also planned to make some changes to the outdoor staff team to help when staff need to attend to emerging issues. Rather than interrupting our regular, scheduled maintenance activities there will be dedicated resources to address urgent requests. Council will also help to keep residents better informed with a new digital communications presence online to increase access to important community information.

In addition to looking at what we can do better with our own processes, Council has identified the opportunity to connect local businesses with Service NSW to provide businesses with a one-stop shop to streamline the processing of development applications for new restaurants, cafes and bars. Local residents, community groups and visitors may have also started to use the new online facility booking system which provides increased access to your local facilities.

Tax plan The Turnbull government seven-year personal income tax plan was recently legislated by Parliament. The plan started 1st July 2018 with support for low income earners and initial changes to address bracket creep.

Step 2 of the plan will see further changes to tax brackets, while the final step will see the 37 per cent tax bracket abolished. This will mean that 94 per cent of Australians will pay no more than 32.5 per cent tax.

These reforms are designed to make personal taxes simpler and fairer and are part of an overall plan to bring the budget back into surplus while increasing funding for essential services like Medicare, hospitals, schools and infrastructure.

Solar communities grants Congratulations to Hunters Hill Pre-School and the Hunters Hill Club who have been awarded $10,240 and $12,500 respectively under the Solar Communities Program.

This federal government initiative was announced by the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, and delivers grants to community organisations wishing to increase their use of solar power. It is designed to provide funding for community groups to install rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV), solar hot water and solar-connected battery systems at their facility to reduce emissions, reduce their electricity costs and support renewable energy.

Stronger communities and volunteer grants Two important grant opportunities are about to open that could assist your local community organisation.

The Stronger Communities Program provides grants for eligible small capital projects that improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant and viable communities.

Not-for-profit organisations can apply for grants from $2,500 to $20,000 to add to funds that they already have for their project.

The Volunteer Grant Scheme provides small grants to community organisations that rely on the support of volunteers.

Grants of $1,000 to $5,000 can be used towards the cost of essential items that help make the work of volunteers easier, safer and more enjoyable, such as equipment, training, transport and background screening.

Local character - the key to good development Much has been said about development in Sydney, with tens of billions being spent on infrastructure to accommodate that development.

It doesn’t matter if you are in the Shire or Penrith, or indeed, in my own electorate of Lane Cove, people are proud of their local area. They feel connected to it, they belong to it and recently my Department held a symposium which recognises that.

It recognises that as our neighbourhoods are changing, as we are growing, people are questioning the change. We don’t want to lose the soul and sense of our communities.

At this symposium, which included council representatives and planners from around NSW, we explored ways to respect the characters of our local communities and at the same time, be responsive to the changes before us with a rapidly growing State. It’s why we are delivering on our promise to include local character considerations in our planning proposals, with new local character statements, some of which are already being prepared.

I have to say, this work of strengthening and preserving local character is difficult, but it’s not impossible - and it is vital as well. The NSW Government wants to see development that meets the needs of NSW and at the same time preserves local character.

Not only must we accommodate growth – but our neighbourhoods and streets must have a joy about them. It’s one of the reasons I am so passionate about more parks and richer tree canopies, because they deeply contribute to that sense of joy.

Our local communities should be a genuine expression of what people value about their neighbourhood and that means the desired future character must be set with the community. Local character needs to be considered as part of strategic planning and when detailed plans for places are prepared.

This does not mean that new development cannot occur.

Instead it means that a design-led approach needs to be implemented which builds on the valued characteristics of individual neighbourhoods and places.

As well, we are producing a Guideline on Local Character - a toolkit for councils and communities. Our work on local character is about making it ‘tangible’. We want to equip councils and their communities with the tools to identify what it is that we cherish about a community.

Towards the end of this year, I will be releasing a book that celebrates local character and all that we have learned from the symposium. I am confident that this will allow us to better collaborate across all aspects of planning to ensure that as our communities grow, they become better places.

Le Vesinet student welcome Hunter’s Hill Council recently welcomed eight French exchange students who are in Australia for six weeks to experience life in Australia.

Hunters Hill has a friendship pact with the City of Le Vesinet in France and each year Australian students visit there for six weeks. This program has been ongoing since 1991 and has been a huge cultural and educational success on both sides of the world.

Plans to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Friendship Pact includes a farewell dinner for the students. All past and present students and parents are invited to attend on August 9th at the Hunters Hill Club, Madeline Street, Hunters Hill.

Presentation of cheques I had the distinct pleasure to present cheques to recipients from the 19th Hunters Hill Food and Wine Festival.

NORTH SYDNEY COMMUNITY AWARDS Federal Member for North Sydney Trent Zimmerman is organising the North Sydney Community Awards to mark the contribution and achievements of residents in the North Sydney federal electorate.

The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 27th September at 6.00 pm at Norths in Cammeray and the guest speaker and presenter is journalist Annabel Crabb.

“In this busy world it is important that we take time out to think of others. There are many people quietly working in our area to help those in need or in support of the community”, Mr Zimmerman said.

The Hunters Hill Quilt Show

Since its inception in 1982, Hunters Hill Quilters has grown to a membership of 65. The group meet each Thursday at Fairland Hall in Hunters Hill, aiming to enhance and further develop the craft of patchwork and quilting, while using their skills to support the local community.

The group will be hosting a quilt show in the Hunters Hill Town Hall from August 9 -12th. Opening Night is Thursday 9th at 7.00pm. A significant donation from this years’ exhibition will go to Days for Girls and Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter.

Over their 35 years of stitching, the group has contributed more than 1,500 quilts to local community projects and more than $190,000 to various local charities.

LAVOCE IN FULL SWING LaVoce, a Lane Cove community choir, held its first concert for the year in July to an enthusiastic full house.

Musical Director, Sarah de Jong, played her piano composition Under the Water, Under the Sea as well as leading the choir in her two-part harmonies of many show and popular favorites.

For the concluding two songs, the audience was strongly encouraged to sing along with the choir.

This tactic was a thinly designed plot to encourage more to join the choir given how much fun the members have, how good singing is for their health, and the satisfaction of being a part of a social network.

A feast for the eyes

“Yes, I do work from life sometimes, but the light changes there too.”

THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE OF EASTERN SOUTH AFRICA INFLUENCES THE ART OF KOBIE BOSCH, GUEST ARTIST AT THE LANE COVE ART SOCIETY’S JUNE MEETING.

“A black and white photo is a useful tonal reference when deciding your colour scheme,” says Kobie.

Kobie never uses black, preferring to use a limited palette and mixing all colours from complementaries.

To help get perspective, Kobie uses a see-through clock drawing to check the angles. Dividing her support into one-third squares helps with placement of objects and shadows break up the negative space. “I like it when an object is cut by the image ‘frame’, suggesting there is more outside the picture.”

Kobie always works on a toned background, drawing in pastel and then going over the lines with paint so that the pastel can be wiped off.

Working in gloves, she puts her colours (Phthalo Blue, French Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Orange, Cadmium Yellow, White and Burnt Sienna) on a sheet of baking paper clipped to a board. She uses linseed oil medium and Gamsol odourless solvent.

Fascinated, Kobie’s audience watched her applying the paint – a teal blue, then the same colour with some white in it, then an orange added to make a neutral grey. An intermediate colour between a light and a dark, rather than blending the two. She puts orange into Phthalo Blue to get a brownish green, then adds Yellow Ochre. “Now for the fruit…”

Inevitably, time runs out – Kobie will finish the painting at home and we are all looking forward to seeing it. Thank you to Kobie for a delightful evening.

Kobie, who grew up in South Africa, loves drawing and works in a variety of mediums. She has a relaxed, humorous way of presenting her work, which delights her audience.

For a still life, Kobie may use acrylics, which have the advantage of working fast. The drawback is that the paint darkens and goes dull when it dries and needs a coat of gloss. For the demonstration painting, Kobie chose oils, which are slower but allowed her to blend and mould to her heart’s content and they keep their colour and shine.

“Food, eating and conversation round the table at dinner – I love that and I think that is why I enjoy painting still life so much,” Kobie says.

Well prepared to show her process, Kobie put up a clipboard covered with photo references on easels together with a drawing on paper of her subject.

“Typical teacher – I used to teach Maths!” Ready too was the square canvas, with background colour and drawing already done.

“Bowls, glasses, fruit - the ordinary objects that we see every day - are fun to present in a different way. I get a kick out of making forms look 3D on a flat surface. And the light changes everything.”

Kobie had chosen a variety of objects, combining solid bowls with transparent glass and luscious fruit. When using a photo reference, Kobie says that you have to be careful that the light is shown to be coming from the same direction.

A stitch in time Don’t miss the 18th biennial Hunters Hill Quilt Show EXHIBITION DATES: 10am to 4.30pm, Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August. $6 entry fee OPENING NIGHT: 7.30 - 9.30pm, Thursday 9th August. $20 entry ticket Over three days, visitors are invited to browse, admire and critique the 60 exhibited unique quilts made by members of the Hunters Hill Quilters group. Visitors can enjoy the quilt displays, buy original quilts, add to their sewing needs from the local quilt shop and enjoy tea, coffee and local, homemade goodies.

Held in the historic Hunters Hill Town Hall, the official opening is on Thursday 9th August with the presentation of prizes by local artist, Robyn Ross. The show will then be open to the public from Friday 10th until Sunday 12th August.

The quilt show raffle provides an opportunity to win one of two quilts, both with very different designs. ‘Castles in the Air’ is a very traditional quilt and ‘Going Round in Circles’ is a bright contemporary design.

A new exhibition for 2018 will showcase ‘Fiddle mats’, which are sensory mats made with lots of textures and fiddly bits that are designed to provide ‘touch therapy’ for sufferers of Alzheimers and dementia. The mats are designed to safely stimulate and soothe people with Alzheimers, dementia, autism or head trauma. Sized for wheelchairs or table tops, these mats are greatly appreciated by nursing homes and carers. The selection on display will be donated to local nursing homes.

As part of their ongoing effort to give back to the wider community, the Hunters Hill Quilters will be donating proceeds from the 2018 Quilt Show to two charities which support women and girls.

Tango comes to Hunters Hill Tango - arguably the most romantic and elegant dance - is arriving at Hunters Hill.

Starting on August 2nd, one of the world’s most experienced Argentine tango teachers will conduct lessons every Thursday evening between 6-10pm at the Gladesville Road Community Centre.

Principal instructor is Carlos Costes, who has been teaching and promoting Argentine Tango for more than a quarter of a century.

“I know that some people who appreciate the grace and fluidity of Tango are apprehensive about ‘having a go’, but they shouldn’t be,” says Carlos. “Tango is addictive, it is highly social and it is my intention to make lessons attractive for all comers, no matter their level of fitness.

Born in Mar del Plata, Carlos has taught and danced professionally in Buenos Aires and has performed throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America. Now permanently residing in Australia, Carlos infuses his classes with information about the music, culture and history.

Mateship I am so relieved! Someone close to me has finally succeeded in finding a new job, away from a bullying boss. It’s so difficult when someone in authority decides to abuse their power over you, as it is easily assumed that those with greater power also tell the greater truth! Hence, they can block your path out, enabling ongoing abuse.

This situation repeats itself over and over, from the school yard to our homes, places of employment to the nations. Bullies are amazingly good at couching their behaviour, and they hone in on vulnerability.

Sometimes they appear unaware of the devastating effects of their actions, although many clearly delight in the pain they cause others. It makes my blood boil!

Intervention by authorities usually depends on evidence, or at least some credible witnesses. Our Australian culture of mateship can help here. Do you know someone who is being bullied? Can you assist them directly by speaking the truth to those who have decision-making power?

That makes you an everyday hero! Or you may be a source of strength for them merely by coming alongside and believing in them – being a good mate by refusing to side with the powerful against them. Your encouragement may give them confidence to eventually stand against the bully. Your words and actions have power too!

Are we complicit in yielding to the ‘loudest’ voices? Let us look beyond persuasive personalities to evidence-based research and a good reputation of credible service. It is also wise to weigh whether the dominant person is telling us the truth, especially when the weaker one asserts otherwise.

It is important to take time to unearth the truth when people’s lives are at stake.

I like what Jesus said to his mates about leadership and power: ‘But it shall not be this way among you.

Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant’.
