EDITOR'S NOTE It wasn’t so long ago that Indian Myna birds were the local pest. Bush turkeys then started to invade, but now it is a 2-wheel species that seems to be multiplying rapidly around the area.

The latest bike share initiative has hit Sydney with a vengeance. It’s a great idea in principle, but in reality, the flexibility to drop off these bikes wherever you please has meant that they are springing up everywhere. Turn to page 10 to find out how this scheme works and what to do when they are left on your verge.

This month we talk to two local women who are doing very important work in supporting the mental health of our young people. With one in seven Australian kids experiencing mental health issues at some stage, early intervention is important.

Jacqui Jones and Narelle Gillies are working with students to build resilience and coping strategies. On page 4-5, we talk with Jacqui and Narelle about the concerning trend which is

Keeping our kids’ positive With mental health issues amongst young people on the rise, more support programs are being introduced to enable kids, and their parents, to better understand themselves and each other. By Jocelyn Biddle According to beyondblue, around one in seven Australian kids experience mental health issues at some stage, with about half of all serious mental health issues in adulthood beginning before the age of 14.

In recognition of this growing incidence, the federal government recently committed $100 million in funding for school mental health programs.

This includes over $45 million to go to beyondblue for its integrated school-based Mental Health in Education initiative. This new national program encourages good mental health and wellbeing practices for Australian children from early learning centres to the end of secondary school.

The funding will also enable the establishment of new headspace centres to help support Australian kids.

According to Jason Trethowan, CEO of headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, ensuring that our young people have access to youth friendly mental health services is just one part of the puzzle.

“It’s imperative that young people learn ways to look after their mental health and have trusted adults they can reach out to if they’re feeling distressed or overwhelmed. It requires ongoing investment and the responsibility lies with the whole community – health professionals, friends, parents, schools and government.”

At a local level, there is one woman who is addressing this need head on through a program that she has developed to build mental strength amongst primary school aged children.

Lane Cove’s Jacqui Jones has taken her background in social work, and her experience as mother of two primary school aged children, and developed a self-leadership and wellness program for young people that combines the latest ideas and research in mindfulness meditation, positive psychology and building resilience in young people.

TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD BECOME ‘MENTALLY FIT’ l Create a ‘greatitude jar’ – one of the tools that Jacqui introduces in her program is asking students to fill a jar with positive events, memories, affirmations and compliments. This jar becomes a special collection of ‘confidence builders’ throughout the year. l Narelle recommends that if your child is thinking negatively, help them to challenge those thoughts by reconnecting with positive emotions.

Encourage them to think of the alternative, by recalling a time when they were happy. Ask how that made them feel? l Each bedtime, sit with your kids and ask them to recount a) one good thing that happened today, and b) one good thing that they did for someone else. Jacqui explains that this helps kids to mentally shift to focussing on what’s going right in their lives. l We can disempower our kids by providing help too early, which can prevent them from finding out who they are for themselves.

Narelle explains that it’s a fine line between ‘helpful helping’ and ‘unhelpful helping’. Rather than paving the way for our kids, act as more of a safety net.

Jacqui Jones is working with school students to help them proactively manage their own mental health.

The six-week program is called ‘Greatfulness’, and has been linked to the NSW Department of Education’s Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) syllabus for years K-6.

“The purpose of the Greatfulness program is to give young people the knowledge and understanding they need so that they can proactively manage their own mental health.

“Building mental strength needs to start early, when it can make a difference.

We want to encourage kids to live life to its full potential. We talk to students about how life shouldn’t be about what you get, but rather about what you give - to focus on the good in their life.”

Over the past 10 months, Jacqui has been single-handedly delivering the program to students in primary schools around Sydney.

In preparation for high school, Year 6 students at St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Lane Cove went through the course late last year.

Class teacher Steve Pryde said that the course was ‘right on the money’, providing students with tangible strategies that enabled them to understand and become the best version of themselves.

“It ticked all the boxes in providing these students with the skillset and practical tips to face high school. It really highlighted the importance of downtime to create a balance in young lives and provided the kids with strategies on how to use their strengths to get through difficult situations.”

During the Greatfulness program, students learn greater emotional regulation, increase their creativity and help equip themselves with practical tools to face future challenges.

The program has been endorsed

by Kids Matter, an Australian Primary Schools mental health initiative and is now being expanded for years 1 to 4. Jacqui is also developing a teacher training course so that teachers can implement the complete Greatfulness program within their own school.

Jacqui says that there is more need than ever for this type of program.

“As the world is getting busier and busier, kids need to understand that happiness comes from within. With social media and technology, kids are often looking outside for happiness.

“I explain to students that our mind is like a big filing cabinet and we need to fill it with things that make us feel good, rather than things that bring us down or make us feel negative.”

Jacqui says that the program is all about giving kids the tools “to look for good”.

“There are times when we all have challenging thoughts or feelings. But these thoughts come and go – they’re impermanent – so rather than pushing them away, sit with those thoughts and let them pass, rather than becoming attached to them.

“Adversity does challenge us, but often that’s where our greatest lessons are. Kids need to understand that perfection doesn’t exist - life is a bumpy ride, and often that’s where the greatest lessons are.”

Local resident Narelle Gillies works with older students in her private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist. She reinforces Jacqui’s sentiments in terms of making kids understand that life isn’t perfect.

“Life is not always going to be fair – sometimes there is no good in a situation, so we need to empower our young people to accept and understand this fact.

“There’s so much hype around ‘achieving’ and being ‘happy’. Kids need to give themselves permission to not feel OK at times. They need to understand

that there’s nothing wrong with feeling sad or down from time to time and that it’s just another emotion.

“I explain it as if you’re watching a movie – if you look at the thought in a curious, slightly detached way, you can then decide whether you want to engage with it, or turn it off.”

Narelle also believes it’s important to start conversations early to raise selfawareness within your child.

“Children need to understand that they don’t need to be like everyone else – knowing themselves from a young age is so important because once puberty happens, the peer group can become so influential.

“The added influence of social media means that there is a risk of kids constantly comparing themselves with others. It builds this pressure that they’re potentially not up to par. This lack of privacy, combined with the fact that there is increasingly less downtime, particularly as activities that we used to do for fun now often have a level of competition associated with them, has created a pressured environment for kids.

“It’s up to parents to really take control of that space by making sure that their kids’ do have downtime. Parents can’t underestimate their part as role models in their child’s mental health.

With the best intentions, we all have our blind spots, so we have to be open to looking at ourselves through this parenting journey,” says Narelle. n

Mayor holds discussions about St Leonards South Mayor Pam Palmer has met with Anthony Roberts MP to discuss the Planning Proposal for the draft St Leonards South LEP amendments.

Lane Cove becomes a Refugee Welcome Zone Council has signed a Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration indicating its commitment to welcoming refugees into the community.

It now joins 60 other NSW councils, and 148 councils Australia wide, who have also signed the Declaration.

As part of its commitment, Council will explore opportunities to organise and coordinate events that help educate and raise awareness around the challenges people who have recently arrived in Australia face when settling into our community, and that celebrate the contribution they have made to Australian society.

Council will also look into developing a work experience position for a student who has recently arrived in Australia to help build their skill set to prepare them for gainful employment.

The State Government is concurrently working on the St Leonards/ Crows Nest Station Planned Precinct, which encompasses the St Leonards South area.

Mayor Palmer has said that it would be beneficial for the community and councillors to understand the Government’s plans for the whole area - particularly in relation to the provision of infrastructure - prior to finalising its Planning Proposal.

“On this basis, Council intends to formally request that it not be required to finalise the current Planning Proposal until after the public release and consideration of the St Leonards / Crows Nest Planned Precinct Draft Land Use Infrastructure and Implementation Plan (LUIIP).”

In her meeting with Anthony Roberts MP, Mayor Palmer also raised the issue of housing targets for the Lane Cove area.

“The Greater Sydney Commission’s dwelling targets for the Lane Cove Local Government Area (LGA) was an additional 1900 dwellings over the next five years. In addition, there was a 10-year target to 2026, expected to be a similar number based on the Commission’s population projections to 2036.

“I outlined the extent of growth in the Lane Cove LGA in recent years, as well as the contribution of 2400 dwellings for the St Leonards South Planning Proposal, together with development in St Leonards east of the railway line of approximately 1900 dwellings. Together this will satisfy the 10-year housing supply targets in the Commission’s Plan.”

Council will now formally request confirmation that, should the Planning Proposal proceed, and given the recent rezonings in St Leonards east of the railway line, that it will have satisfied its housing supply targets to 2026.

Online booking system launched Council has just launched a new online booking system for its facilities. This will allow staff, community groups and the general public to reserve, pay, track and edit bookings for the hire of Council buildings, parks and sporting fields online.

This will also enable users to view multiple venues, compare facilities and costs and manage their own bookings.

Council has also linked the booking system to the security system, which generates a security code once a booking has been confirmed. This code can be input into a keypad at the relevant facility, which enables access and avoids the need for a Council ranger to have to be available for unlocking and locking facilities. The link allows for not only automatic unlocking of the doors, but also the doors will lock again at the end of the booking period.

Throughout 2018, training on the new system will be provided to community groups who regularly book venues.

Council requests reimbursement for forced merger costs The total amount of money spent on the recent forced amalgamation process across NSW has been disclosed and adds up to over $24 million.

Lane Cove Council incurred $382,254 in costs in the legal proceedings. Despite attempts

by Council’s solicitors to offer to accept $320,000 in full and final settlement to facilitate a quick resolution, including a number of follow up attempts, the Crown Solicitor’s Office has not responded to any requests.

In order to pursue the matter, Council will now make representations to the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian MP and Anthony Roberts MP seeking their support in facilitating the reimbursement of these legal costs.

Early Childhood Health Centre to have facelift Lane Cove’s Early Childhood Centre, located in the Community Centre on Longueville Road, is to be refurbished.

The Community Centre is currently undergoing renovation and the building will be shared

by Centrehouse Inc. as a creative arts space and the Early Childhood Centre.

NSW Health has agreed to fund an upgrade to the Early Childhood Centre at the same time that general building works are taking place. The refurbished centre will include a consulting room and access to a large group session room, increasing the capacity of the facility.

In the interim, the Health Centre is operating from the Cove Room in the Civic Centre.

It is anticipated that they will return to the community centre by mid-May.

The companies have also embedded incentives into their price model, with a credit point system encouraging good behaviour and usage so that the more credit points you have, the cheaper your fares become. Dwindling credit points due to irresponsible behaviour could leave customers facing higher fares of up to $19.99 for 30 minutes.

Managing the downside

You may have noticed an increasing number of bikes scattered around Lane Cove. Abandoned? Not quite. Rather these bikes are part of a new app-driven, dockless bicycle-sharing platform. By Shannen McDonald The operators will tell you it’s all about helping to reduce harmful emissions and traffic decongestion. But let’s be real - it’s a business model and this environmentally friendly mode of transport isn’t all positive.

The principle of the dockless system is that the bikes can be used and then left anywhere. Which is why they have been appearing on footpaths; blocking walkways and shop entrances; in the middle of parks and playing fields; and some even popping up in the Sydney Harbour. Not ideal, right?

Sydney now has five privately owned and operated bike sharing companies – oBike; ofo; Mobike; Reddy Go; and newcomer EarthBike. The concept which has grown in popularity across Europe, Singapore and China, has now seen these companies spend the second half of 2017 scattering bikes across Australia.

Unlike other transport share options such as Uber that utilise vehicles already in use, thousands of bikes must be added to our streets in order for this scheme to work. Between the five companies, there is an estimated 5,500 bikes that have been released across Sydney since June of last year.

The ones that you are most likely to have seen locally are oBike (silver and yellow coloured); Ready Go (an Australian company which has distributed the red bikes), and ofo (yellow coloured).

So how exactly does it work?

The hiring service operates completely from an app, where you can set up an account that is linked to your credit card. A once-off, refundable deposit of between $69 and $99 will then need to be made.

Once the account is activated, the GPS fitted bikes appear on a map enabling you to select the most conveniently located one for your use.

This will remain reserved for you from 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the company you are using.

You then simply pick it up, unlock it using the app and there you have it - your very own bike to ride around as you please!

What about helmets? ofo, Mobike or Reddy Go bikes initially came with helmets, however this has become increasingly unpredictable as helmets either go missing or are damaged.

In NSW the law requires a helmet to be worn whenever riding a bike, and although the bike hire websites do promote safety through helmet usage, it is up to the individual to ensure they are riding with one. And you can imagine the frustration of arriving at your reserved bike only to find a helmet isn’t available.

How much does it cost?

The prices of hire vary slightly between operators, with an average of

Lane Cove Council, like many others across Sydney, doesn’t deny the potential and advantages of the bike sharing scheme. However there are obvious problems and concerns with how it is being implemented into Sydney’s suburbs.

At its March meeting, Council agreed to adopt the Inner Sydney Bike Share Guidelines. These guidelines have been devised by six Sydney councils and set out minimum standards and expectations for bike share operators.

The guidelines specify that operators must enable easy reporting of faulty or damaged bikes, missing helmets or bikes parked in inappropriate locations through their app, website and email and that a fully dedicated phone number is made available 24/7.

The guidelines also cover safe bike placement; collection and relocation of faulty, damaged or unused bikes; and timeframes that apply to help keep bikes moving, so that they are not left in one location for too long.

Between 1-7 days is permitted, but beyond this, the operator is required to relocate the bike or offer incentives to customers to ride the bike to another destination. If a bike has not been moved after 11 days, Council or the public can instruct the operator to relocate the bike. After 15 days, the bike can be impounded by Council with a fee payable for its release. A further 28 days after impoundment, the bike can be recycled by Council.

While Council intends to work together with bike share operators to achieve their sustainable transport goals, it is prepared to assist in the removal of hazardous bikes wherever necessary, consistent with the new guidelines.

Move over Mum and Dad... I know what I’m doing!

It’s important to adjust your parenting style as your kids transition from young children to teenagers and beyond.

By the time your child reaches high school, you can rest assured they’ve heard your opinion and advice on just about everything.

In fact, beyond the age of about 10, a lot of what we say is just repetition and in their minds, nagging. Telling your kids that they’re hot/ cold/ hungry/ tired beyond early childhood is robbing them of their ability to think and make decisions for themselves. They We want also need to learn to communicate their needs to empower in a way that is listened to and acted upon, rather than us taking care of everything for our kids them. to trust Most importantly we want to empower our themselves. kids to trust themselves and sometimes that involves letting them learn things the hard way.

Of course, safety should never be compromised and there will be certain family rules and expectations that are non-negotiable. However, if you find yourself constantly battling with your child because they want to wear shorts in the middle of winter; sleep in their bed the wrong way round; or eat leftover spaghetti bolognaise for breakfast, lunch and dinner; perhaps it’s time to step back, remembering that young people learn best through trial and error.

When our kids are very young, we spend an enormous amount of time in control - we are the one in the driver’s seat. For the most part, in those early years we make all the decisions around food, clothing, safety, sleeping and so on.

Very quickly, our parenting habits are formed and without even thinking about it we spend the next decade or so repeating ourselves. “Put your seatbelt on; you need to go to bed now; you must be cold” and the list goes on.

As our children enter adolescence, it’s usually more productive to take the passenger seat and adopt a curious approach. “Where are you headed?” “How do you feel about

that?” “What do you see happening as a result of that decision?” “Is there anything else you need to think of?”

Respect is vital to this age group. They want to discover who they are all by themselves. As parents, we need to give them space to do this.

By late high school and into early adulthood, our parenting style needs to evolve again into more of an airbag or safety net approach. This adaptation takes time and practice, but will actually draw your children emotionally closer as they know you are there for them unconditionally, if and when needed.

Otherwise, show them you trust them to make their own choices and decisions by backing off with the full understanding that there may be dents and scratches along the way. If we continue to monitor and take on the responsibilities of our kids into their teenage and early adult years, we may create a sense of helplessness, creating

either over-dependence or avoidance. Remember, you can care deeply for your children without having to make everything right for them.

Ask your local health professional Root Canal Therapy Most people conjure up awful thoughts when they hear these words, but this hides the fact that root canal therapy, or RCT, is responsible for relieving dreadful toothache pain and saving teeth from extraction.

A little background Teeth are made up mostly of dentine, with a hard enamel outer layer on the crown of the tooth. The inside of the tooth however is hollow, and contains a tissue known as the pulp. The pulp looks very much like gum tissue with fibres, nerves and blood vessels.

The pulp gives life to the tooth.

All is well when the pulp is alive and healthy. However, if it becomes inflamed (known as pulpitis), problems can occur. This can happen either by bacterial infection from Dental tooth decay or cracks, or by trauma Dr Mark Casiglia from teeth grinding. Low-grade pulpitis is characterised by sensitivity to cold. More advanced pulpitis is characterised by greater temperature sensitivity, but also to hot, as well as unprovoked pain which can be quite severe. Teeth don’t recover from this state as the internal pressure within the tooth builds up to the point that blood can no longer circulate in and out of the tooth. The result is death of the pulp, which eventually leads to a dental abscess in the jawbone around the ends of the tooth roots.

What is involved in RCT? RCT is the process involved in removing a dead or dying pulp from a tooth and sealing off the root canals. It is the only alternative to extraction in teeth with dead or dying pulps. The root canals are located through an access hole made on the biting

surface of molar teeth, or the back surface of front teeth.

An array of quite specialised equipment is then used to measure the exact length of each root canal, clean out the diseased pulp and expand the root canal space. A dressing is then placed into the canals to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation in the jawbone surrounding the roots. On a following visit, the canals are filled with a plastic, rubbery material. Finally, the tooth is refilled and in most cases, a crown is recommended since dead teeth tend to fracture more easily than living teeth.

Of course, prevention is always better than the cure, so excellent home care and regular dental examinations will help you prevent the need for RCT.

Why does it hurt?

Have you ever wondered why you can sometimes do dramatic things and have no lasting pain? Whereas at other times, seemingly small incidents gradually build, sometimes spread and can cause more pain or stiffness than you would expect?

This presentation is remarkably common. One explanation for it is the ‘Accumulative Strain Theory’. This is where over time, we have minor strains that the body ‘knows about’ but because they are relatively minor, they sit at a subclinical level. At this point the brain is not alerted to pain. When the body receives another strain, this will accumulate on top of the original strain. When the total strains reach a certain tipping point, the brain is then alerted and registers pain beyond the level you would expect. The location of this pain sensation may or may not be directly related to the site of strain. This can explain why some pains are eased but not fully resolved with local treatments.

Statins are a class of medication designed to reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver. With the liver producing about 80% of our cholesterol, and diet contributing only some 20%, the search was on years ago for a treatment to reduce high cholesterol in people with heart disease.

A cholesterol treatment breakthrough came in 1976 with the development of the first proto statin. Akira Endo found a molecule which interfered with the biochemical pathway in the liver that led to the production of cholesterol.

By 1983, the Merck Company was experimenting with likely molecules using animal studies. Merck’s product, Simvastatin, hit the world in 1988 - and the rest is history.

Why use statins?

Ischaemic Heart Disease (or IHD) is the greatest single cause of death in Australia and in many Western countries. One Australian figure from 2011 quotes 21,500 deaths from ischaemic heart disease that year.

Before statins there was only diet, exercise and weight loss to reduce cholesterol. Whilst each is very important, together they had little effect on cholesterol as such.

All the Cardiologists I know put their heart disease patients on statins to reduce their arterial cholesterol and plaque load, keeping the arteries of the heart from clagging up and eventually blocking, thereby leading to a heart attack. The same for brain arteries in stroke and lower leg arteries Medical in peripheral vascular disease. Tons of Dr Tim David studies support this treatment protocol.

What is cholesterol? Cholesterol also has a role in sex hormone production oestrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men - and thereby a role in sexual attributes, sexual development, reproduction and more.

Steroid hormones called cortisols play huge roles in sugar, salt and water control in the body. Complex, vital and not for now.

The body needs cholesterol for the construction of our trillion plus cell membranes.

One estimate I found says there are 37.2 trillion cells, whereas another says there are 15 trillion cells in our body. What’s a few trillion here or there?

Cholesterol protects skin and the myelin sheaths which surround nerves. About 25% of our brain tissue is made of cholesterol.

So the upshot is we need cholesterol. It’s not evil. Just too much of it is bad.

Statins anyone?

NOW FOR THE DARK SIDE… The adverse side effects of statins. As with all chemicals put into the body - from foods to alcohol to medications - statins have unwanted side effects.

For example, if you look up the side effects of the Atorvastatin molecule on Google – brand name ‘Lipitor’ – you will find a yard-long list of possible side effects, both common and rare. Remember even too much water can kill you - not by drowning, but by water intoxication. So it’s moot with statins. Do I treat

my heart attack risk or do I take a chance on statin side effects?

What are the side effects of statins? Liver function disturbance, muscle aches and pains, tiredness and more - see Atorvastatin above.

Most can be detected early by recognising new symptoms from the medication, and others by follow-up blood tests.

What about the current bogey of memory loss? This is a new, possible side-effect first noticed many years after the release of the statins, but right now in our face and minds and scaring the @#$%^^&* out of vulnerable people.

It is somewhat like jawbone necrosis and the bone-saving osteoporosis medications of a few years ago - rare but nasty.

Late onset side effects do happen.

Studies on this vary. In 2015 an Australian study by Jamalowicz et al found no difference in memory loss in their statin and non-statin treatment groups.

Another big American study in 2015 by Strom et al found a 30-day onset of memory loss for all cholesterol lowering medications, but with a negative memory loss long-term for the statin group.

The jury is still out. Don’t be scared or bullied. If you are worried, see your doctor to discuss - especially if memory loss is a new side effect on a new cholesterol medication.

Life's Rich Pattern It’s becoming a very real social issue. Matters came to a head the other day when I realised I’d lost ten minutes of my life I’ll never get back puzzling over the right type and colour of clothes pegs. (Wooden or plastic? Are they recyclable/perishable? Were they made by assembly lines of children in third world countries? How long will they last?) And so on. By Liz Foster.

Consumer research has its place of course. We all spend time investigating the details for stuff that’s expensive or complex. But too much analysis can be a double-edged sword.

A couple of years ago, we were in the market for a leaf blower. (I was always very jealous of the neighbour’s lawnmower man, who’d sweep their deck and entire outside area in a matter of moments with his own device). The urge to slip him ten bucks to direct it over the fence and wave it at our garden was frequent. Meanwhile I’d be toiling away clearing gum leaves with the broom.

My husband insisted that he was the man for the job. After about a year – literally - of hints, persuasion and

extensive online research, he finally rallied himself and set off for Bunnings.

Just something simple and light, I said.

It’s all about convenience. Yes, yes, leave it to me, he said.

He returned some time later with something in both size and shape resembling a small rocket launcher.

Apparently it was brilliant because it could hoover up leaves as well as blow them around.

Alas, changing the rocket launcher from suck to blow required the removal of one part and the addition of another.

Which nudged the whole thing from convenient to decidedly inconvenient.

Requests to get the device out so I can use it are met with head-shaking

bewilderment and “you know it’s on the wrong setting, I have to change it.”

“Can you change it then?”

“Yes, yes, leave it to me.”

Meanwhile the back tiles are carpeted with gum leaves, making pretty gum leaf shaped patterns on the travertine.

Time has passed, and the rocket launcher now resides resplendently in our garden shed, wedged in behind the broken scooter and the rusted paint tins. Navigation to access other stuff is awkward, but it’s turned into a touchy subject.

Luckily the neighbours still get their garden done by the lawnmower man, so it’s a simple matter of slipping him a tenner and job done.

Our Movement Matters (in association with Lane Cove Council and Lane Cove Rotary) attracted an amazing response. We hoped to start with ten people, but within days we already had a full class of 25 with more waiting, so we decided to run two seven week programs and hope to run it again, perhaps adding an additional intermediate class.

The response to the new program showed once more how the Lane Cove and Hunters Hill communities are keen to try something This month new and are interested in staying healthy and active. we are running This month we are running a a number of number of new events and activities as new events part of Seniors Week. This will enable and activities people to try and see whether there is something they would like to do more as part of of in the future.

Sue has not come downstairs this morning. Usually, she is the first to wake up. After breakfast, they walk out together and she sits under the pergola sipping her tea, enjoying the cool breeze. Concerned he goes upstairs to check. Sue is still asleep.

Later Grandma arrives with a lunch carton, leaves it on the breakfast bar, goes upstairs, speaks to Sue and leaves.

“It’s now late afternoon, poor Sue has not eaten anything since morning” he worries. Reaching for the lunch carton he takes it up to Sue. Amazed she pats and kisses him, as he licks her face.

“Car coming” yells boy, picks up wicket (garbage bin), back out on the street.

Batsman hits ball over the roof into a backyard. Fieldsmen jump fences, search, throw ball back to the street.

Batsman has 36 runs. Next over begins.

Three of us hopped out of the little Cessna at about 8000 feet. After a short free-fall we opened our parachutes.

Unfortunately it was a day of unpredictable winds and we found ourselves heading for a large paddock populated with tiny dots which we soon discovered were cattle. We landed in their midst and the chutes deflated.

The curious cattle came ever closer.

Unexpectedly the wind returned.

Suddenly dragged off our feet we began bouncing along the ground. The alarmed cattle were racing ahead to escape, emptying their bowels before us. Our overalls never looked or smelt the same again.

Our love making was as intense as it was on our wedding night some four years ago. I have been in love with my wife Julie from the moment we first met at a dinner prompted during our online chatting. She eased out of our bed heading down the hallway to collect a couple of bottles of water from the kitchen.

I was admiring the beauty of the silhouette her naked body made in the moonlight while she meandered down the hallway. That was until a huge shadow stepped out behind her.

The hallway went black. I yelled. Julie screamed.

Grandpa lived alone, but he was not really coping.

A family conference devised a strategy and appointed a spokesman.

“No! I will not live in one of those places. They are ghastly and full of ghastly people. ‘God’s waiting room’ is not funny. Please don’t mention this again.”

So much for strategy!

A year later it was clearly time for action. Another family conference led to the old boy agreeing to a ‘short holiday’.

On the second day the family visited, with much trepidation.

“There are some very nice people on this cruise. And I quite like my cabin”.

On a somewhat busy street in St Leonards sits an oldy-worldly relic, wedged between two modern high-rise constructions. This unique building has two customer car parks of its own in front thereof. Many passersby have probably wondered how it escaped demolition. Perhaps the owner steadfastly refused to move, so that the land on which it stands could not be built on. All in all, this building attracts attention by its very size. St Leonards has grown like topsy and the surrounding areas of this quaint building are mostly commercial, with the occasional corner building being a café. Oh, that’s life.

An emu became enthralled when a bird-like design took to the skies. Air travel had always left him spellbound.

He looked upwards with a rather wistful eye. The following days whizzed by until suddenly a decision was made. Emu was going on an airborne excursion. He hurriedly packed his bags and went to the tarmac. The sonic buzz of all the planes stirred excitement.

Years of wanting to fly were about to come to fruition. Sitting on the plane's wing, the emu soon found himself in icy Antarctica. Ironically, hundreds of flightless penguins where there to greet him upon arrival.

Standing in the bitter cold, bare headed, we gave a hoarse cheer, choking back our emotions as the ship we had come to love so much, sank. We headed back to Murmansk, to a cold and frigid reception, as we mustered on the snow covered jetty.

The last few days had taken their toll, hours at action stations, nerve breaking tension, loss of sleep, meals of cocoa and corn beef, living in constant anxiety, all had lowered our resistance.

Now a great weariness overcame us, we were dead tired, filthy, oil soaked, unshaven, and shivering in the subzero temperatures.

What cue is first. Second. Okay. You are in control. How do you speak again? I breathe in and remember the feeling of the play. The touch, the smell of the theatre and I remember. I smile at the person next to me.

“Ready?”

The soft grass under my bare skin felt softer, before the world was incinerating. The flowers seemed pinker, the weather, a perfect crisp cold. I considered his eyes, blue.

Reflecting the colour of fear. Once they stood out, icy and algid. Now dark grey. He looked at me. Smiled, wistfully. The sky was turning red. The air suddenly turned fevered. I begin to cry. I sit my head on the grass. I see him looking at me from the corner of my eye. He mimes the words, ‘I love you’.

It was the last thing I saw.

Then, blinding light.

As Ajay strolled into Al Toro’s Italian, he noticed nothing different to any other pizza place. He moved up, third in line. As the couple before him walked away, he began to give his order.

“A Hawaiian pizza with extra pineapple and anchovies.” The cashier just looked at him and pressed a button. “Welcome through’, she said in a slow monotone. A door opened and revealed another room. Confused, Ajay asked what was happening, but was just led through what seemed like millions of different doors. Finally, she spoke. “How did you find out the code?”

“What code? I came for pizza.”

“Any advice?” “None. Just stick to the mission, find the target, get them alone, you know what to do next.” I felt a smile creep on my face. “Easy as that?” “Easy as that, Agent Jolie.” With that, I pulled on heels and started to climb up the wall.

This month we showcase the creativity of a selection of high school students, who wrote and contributed their 100 word stories as part of class exercises aimed at developing their writing skills.

It was chaos. Christy Thomas had thought that it would be nice to spend the weekend at the Ridiculous Rides Amusement Park, however her day was very different to what had been planned. She had spent some time exploring the rides before she came across a rather nice-looking ferriswheel. Christy boarded it, enjoying the lovely view. At least, until things started to go wrong. As it was on its way down, a cable tore, leaving the carriage dangling dangerously over water. Everything stopped. People were screaming. The carriage turned slightly, and then crashed into the water.

It never resurfaced.

Running. That’s what you do in the cross country. I love to run, so here I am. As I follow the trail, I pass more and more people. The wind rushing past me takes my breath away. My legs are burning. The end of the track comes closer and closer. I’m almost there. Suddenly, a blur rushes past.

It’s Abigail, my nemesis. Of course she’s the one to overtake me. We are the fastest runners in our school. She passes the finish and as I cross it two seconds later, I slouch in defeat.

Glimpses of another world Local author Guy Hallowes writes another anecdote of his time spent in Africa. Guy has lived in Kenya, UK, South Africa, Botswana and Canada before settling in Lane Cove. He has written five books, together with a collection of short stories.

MAU-MAU MEETING It was 1949 and three years after Dad had put his life savings into a farm at Ol’Kalou - the start of his dream of personal independence.

Thirty of the 35 families living on the farm were Kikuyu. My father spoke fluent Kikuyu. He had heard two of the wives of people working on the farm talking about a ‘big meeting’ to be held on the next Saturday night in one of the tractor driver’s huts.

This was reinforced with requests for an unusual number of ‘beer permits’ (a nonsensical Government requirement where the farmer had to give written permission for an employee to brew beer).

We were all away, except Dad who had stayed to look after the farm. On the appointed night, Dad locked the dogs in the house, blacked his face and, unarmed, went to the nearby Kikuyu village. Having identified the hut, with women all scurrying backwards and forwards with beer and food, Dad went to the far side of the hut from the door. He dug a little hole in the mud that filled the gaps between the timber that the hut was constructed from and watched and listened to the meeting.

Dad was absolutely horrified with what he saw and heard. It was a Mau -Mau meeting and there was a man from Nairobi who explained that the MauMau was set-up, by the Kikuyu, to “chase all the whites into the sea.” The man collected money from all the attendees (only men). He appointed our cook as an oath administrator and our ‘houseboy’ (I don’t like the expression either) as his reinforcer.

Dad went to the Commissioner of Police in Nairobi and told him the story.

He was told in no uncertain terms to ‘shut up’. The British had plans to bring thousands of ex-servicemen to Kenya as settlers, which they did, and nothing was going to upset those plans.

(This episode is included in ‘No Happy Valley’, the first book in Guy’s ‘Winds of Change’ trilogy. It’s entirely true. Thousands of mainly British exservicemen settled in Kenya in the 1950’s and were ruined when the British were forced to buy them out at very low prices as part of the Kenyan independence settlement in 1963.)

Jump onboard!

I’m back in familiar territory - my old stamping ground of Japan.

And while this is a mother and daughter holiday, I’m also refreshing my knowledge and checking out things for March 2019 when I will escort a fabulous cruise taking in China, Korea, and Japan during their haze free, picture perfect, too short spring.

If you haven’t heard of this trip before, then you’re clearly not in the know! This Regent Seven Seas luxury cruise (at a very affordable price) is all but sold out, save for the few rooms that Trendsetter still has available to sell. And it’s a great deal because not only will you enjoy 18 days sailing, but we then follow this up with 3 nights touring in Tokyo, a most exciting city. Our journey commences in China with an overnight in each of Shanghai and Tianjin (the port for Beijing). Both these cities are amazingly modern - remember the iconic architecture created for the Beijing Olympics? And yet each has managed to retain some of the traditional and old so that you can still feel the roots and sense the culture that imbues life in China today. The unlimited free excursions enjoyed on this cruise will allow you to experience this for yourselves. Leave the skyscrapers and travel to the water village of Suzhou, or explore the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Plenty of choices await.

There is also one more Chinese city you’ll get to explore and that is Dalian, consistently voted one of the top three cities in China. It was supposedly built on a plan of Paris, and with its many trees and gardens is high on the liveability index.

We then leave China and sail toward Korea, arriving after a palate-cleansing day at sea, ready for the delights of Seoul and Busan. I’ll be heading to picturesque Bukchon Hanok Village, a village of traditional banok houses

dating all the way back to the Joseon Dynasty. Amazingly, they are still lived in and in the heart of the city between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. Busan will be new to me. Described by Lonely Planet guide as “one of the great unheralded cities in Asia. Brimming with cobalt oceans, verdant mountains and delectable fare, it's a city full of surprises and a laid-back vibe.” I can’t wait!

Finally, we travel south to Japan with Nagasaki our first port of call. Long before it became famous as the second of two Japanese cities to succumb to extensive bombing, Nagasaki was the port where many foreigners, particularly the Dutch, came to trade and where missionaries tried to convert the Japanese to Christianity. For decades it was always more outward looking and somewhat accepting of cultural differences, and this coupled with its southernmost location provides a totally different experience to that of the traditional cities.

From Nagasaki we sail to Kagoshima, known as the Naples of the East for its bay location, hot climate, and stratovolcano Mt Sakura; and then Hososhima, the gateway port to a number of Kyushu’s beautiful shrines and temples. The next stop is Hiroshima, where it’s unlikely anyone will miss the opportunity to visit Peace Park and the Museum dedicated to the memory of the atom bomb experience that in these times of political uncertainty, serves as a poignant reminder about why rearmament is indeed scary. An overnight in Hiroshima will allow us all to explore further – Hiroshima is not just about the war.

The Inland Sea of Japan is one of the most scenically beautiful and revered places in Japan, being a long expanse of inland waterway and peppered with hundreds of small islands and rocky outcrops. We wend out way up through Kochi (where I will be looking to bathe in some natural hot springs), and overnight in Kobe, the port for the temple and

garden heaven Kyoto with thousands of cherry blossom trees in bloom. Our penultimate stop is Shimizu, from where many will head towards iconic Mt Fuji , before a final sail into Tokyo harbour for our 3-night land touring.

Wow, what a diverse and exciting range of experiences this cruise and tour presents. I jumped onboard, so to speak, at the chance to escort a group on cruise, which is sure to be a ‘best of’ event.

More than just a pretty smile Looking after your pet’s teeth is one of the most important things you can do for their health and wellbeing.

Dental disease is often underestimated - both in how frequently it occurs and the significance it has on the affected animal. Your vet can assess your pet’s teeth and guide you on dental care, whether it is home care or a dental procedure performed under a general anaesthetic.

Dental problems in dogs and cats can range in severity from tartar and gingivitis through to bone loss, tooth root abscesses and rotten teeth.

Dental disease often starts early in life, with vets commonly seeing tartar in animals as young as one or two years old. This is not particularly surprising when we consider that dogs and cats have teeth and gums that are quite similar to our own. While people brush their teeth twice daily, floss and use mouthwash to maintain dental hygiene, many pets receive little preventative care throughout their life.

People who own dogs and cats are often surprised when their vet finds problems with their pet’s teeth. It is rare for them to show evidence of pain, as stopping eating generally only occurs at the most extreme end of dental disease.

We know ourselves that problems with our teeth can be extremely painful - even with relatively minimal disease compared to what our furry friends suffer from. However, a dog or cat’s instinct is to keep eating for survival, so they will eat through tremendous amounts of pain, potentially downplaying the severity of the problem. This can make dental disease more difficult to detect.

brushing their cat or dogs’ teeth, but surprisingly many animals do take to it well. It is often easier to start when they are young or train them to accept it using positive reinforcement.

Species appropriate toothpaste must be used which is flavoured to increase appeal (chicken flavour is much more acceptable to dogs and cats than mint!) and is safe for them to swallow. A soft children’s toothbrush or a finger toothbrush can be used. Brushing is best performed daily, however there is still a benefit in a few times per week if you cannot commit to daily brushing.

Once dental disease is detected, your vet may recommend a dental procedure. It can only be performed safely, painlessly and thoroughly in an animal under anaesthetic, as full assessment of the teeth requires probing of the gums and dental x-rays. These tests are very important as teeth are much like icebergs, with two thirds of the tooth being below the gum line and therefore out of view.

Once the mouth has been assessed, the teeth will be scaled and polished, very similarly to how humans have their teeth treated at the dentist.

If any diseased teeth are detected, they will generally be extracted to remove the source of pain and infection.

Dental disease often starts early in life

Procedures such as root canals can be used to retain damaged teeth under certain circumstances, and this would need to be performed by a vet with additional training in dentistry. Many owners worry about their animals being able to eat once teeth are removed, but dogs and cats are remarkably resilient in this department, and generally eat normally and comfortably once healing has occurred.

So next time you visit your vet, ask about your pet’s teeth and how you can keep them in the best possible health. Your dog or cat will thank you for it!

Making a difference A visit to Nepal in 2006 impacted Lane Cove’s Patrick Price to such an extent, that it led to him starting a charity that is changing educational outcomes for thousands of children in that country.

As a teacher himself, Pat’s first visit to Nepal exposed serious issues with its educational and disciplinary standards. This was reinforced in subsequent visits, where Pat assisted in classrooms for up to eight months at a time.

“Nepal is a very peaceful country, but inside the classroom I witnessed and have read thousands of cases about verbal humiliation and physical corporal punishment dished out to vulnerable young children.

“One classroom could have up to 70 kids together in a Patrick Price has established a charity which is providing educational small, dark space with rote opportunities to thousands of learning and strict discipline Nepalese students. being used to manage the group. Kids can’t learn in that sort of environment - it was leading not only to high dropout rates, but physical and psychological damage.

“My vision was to set up a way to show teachers - many of whom had no formal training themselves - how you can educate and manage a classroom without students feeling threatened and fearful."

Pat set about setting up the Centre for Learning and Children's Rights (CLCR) in 2007. This Australian not-for-profit organisation is delivering educational and humanitarian projects in Nepal through its volunteer work, project implementation and skills training.

“Education is so important.

This has been my opportunity to give back, using my skills to assist the people of Nepal.”

Developed initially to deliver educational change through professional teacher training, the charity then went on to establish a school with a vision for practical and violence free education. The Heartland Academy was started in 2008. Located in Kathmandu, this school has educated thousands of students in the past ten years, and currently has 500 students enrolled from primary through to tertiary level.

“We selected the location of the school based on the fact that it was a very poor community, with many of the students coming from backgrounds of abuse. We look to provide as much support as possible – this includes a 25-bed hostel for students that don’t have a home,” says Pat. The school employs 78 staff, mostly Nepali teachers who are dedicated to providing a safe, non-violent educational environment which caters for individual student learning needs and encourages the holistic development of all children as individuals and as leaders.

When Pat started his work in Nepal in 2006, upwards of 70%

of female students would leave school around grade 3.

“A lot of our focus with the Heartland Academy is on the long-term support of females through scholarships and educational opportunities.

It’s leading to real societal change, as these girls now have far greater choice in their lives which is having such a positive impact for these communities.”

Heartland Academy also offers two tertiary streams in science and management, with teacher training about to commence.

Managed solely by volunteers, CLCR Australia oversees the administration, fundraising and project management for the Heartland Academy. In excess of 97% of all money donated is used directly by the school, and for development initiatives including CLCR’s teacher training program: Education and Disciplining Children with Dignity in Nepal.

Pat manages his work with the charity in his spare time, in between juggling commitments with his young family and his fulltime position with the NSW Department of Education.

“It gives my life great meaning. We’ve had some great turn arounds since we started it. Upwards of 10,000 kids have come through our school and we’ve helped change their lives by providing a positive learning experience.”

Pat’s work was recognised when he received a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Lane Cove. This award is one of the highest honours that Rotary can bestow upon a person, and recognises outstanding contributions in humanitarian and educational programs.

It’s almost three years since the earthquakes in Nepal. In the aftermath of this disaster, the Heartland Academy was used as a refuge centre.

Pat explains that there were over 100 people living on the basketball courts of the school, with another 30 families taking shelter in their adjoining hostel and class rooms. CLCR were able to assist with water; food; temporary kitchen facilities; solar recharging for mobile phones; counselling for both children and adults (which is ongoing), together with emergency educational packs when school was able to start again.

“We had an opportunity to support the community and we’ve worked hard to help them to rehabilitate.

Some level of psychological damage still exists, but we pride ourselves on being able to reach out and assist in such tragic circumstances.”

Helping create a happier Lane Cove!

A new course called Exploring What Matters will start in Lane Cove in April, aimed at helping people discover how to live a happier and kinder life.

Trish Sara will be running an ‘Exploring What Matters’ course, which starts in Lane Cove this April.

The course has been developed

by Action for Happiness, a UK-based movement of people taking action for a happier world. With 60,000 members in 160 countries, it is a secular, sciencebased organisation open to people of all backgrounds.

Lane Cove local Trish Sara has volunteered to lead the course in Lane Cove.

"As a counsellor, I understand the enormous value in creating a happier, more meaningful life - not only for ourselves but for our family, friends and the greater community.

“Analysis of the course has found that it leaves people both happier and more pro-social, with participants reporting increases in levels of life

satisfaction, mental wellbeing, compassion and social trust. Many say the course is life-changing,” says Trish.

The course is described as a challenge to the promotion of materialism and individual success which is predominant in Western culture.

Over an eight-week period, sessions will explore big questions. Starting with "What really matters in life?" and "What really makes us happy?", it is followed by sessions dealing with adversity, having good relationships, caring for others, and creating happier workplaces and communities. It ends with "How can we create a happier world?"

The volunteers focussed on Batten Reserve and surrounding areas.

Stringy Bark Creek Residents Association member Guy Hallowes said that they collect a similar amount of waste each year, and they are hoping that this will reduce over time.

“We collected around 750 kilos of waste this year. The recently introduced Earn and Return scheme, in combination with the elimination of free single use plastic bags from 1st July, are small but important steps in the right direction.”

Let’s talk about a popular topic - growth in Sydney! A blueprint for our future growth has just been released by the Greater Sydney Commission (GSC), a government body chaired by Lucy Turnbull.

Town planning is one of Council’s most important functions. Council has responsibility for shopping precincts, residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres and industrial lands.

I realise we may have been expecting to take a breath after all the recent building activity in Lane Cove! Our new precincts are just starting to take shape with young families moving in or empty nesters enjoying the benefits of downsizing. However, the GSC’s plans will set new growth targets for dwellings and jobs in Lane Cove. But for the first time, the vision includes consideration of both infrastructure growth and the importance of the natural environment.

No matter what your views on the growth of Sydney’s population, it is Council’s job to plan for it responsibly. We look to provide neighbourhoods which cater to a range of lifestyles with transport, amenity, affordability and safety in mind.

But to preserve and grow our green areas and open spaces at the same time will be a conversation which everyone might be interested in.

The app is available for both iPhones and androids. It’s easy to snap and send issues to Council such as graffiti, illegally parked cars, potholes, trip hazards in footpaths, abandoned trolleys and other concerns.

100 years of Anzac Council extends an invitation to attend the Hunters Hill 95th Memorial Service to be held in the Hunters Hill Town Hall on Monday April 23rd commencing at 7.30pm.

The march will step-out from the RSL Sub-Branch Hall (corner Ady and Alexandra Streets) at 7.15pm to arrive at the Town Hall for the 7.30pm service.

Guest speaker is award winning playwright Mr John Misto who will give his address on the moving subject of this year’s commemoration of 100 Years of Women in War. The Hunters Hill Sub-Branch members invite everyone to the RSL hall for a supper following the service.

Local Planning Panels - selection of members On December 21st, Council was advised that the Minister had approved a list of independent experts from which Council was to choose at least two for appointment to its Local Planning Panel.

The Department advised that while two appointments were necessary to constitute the panel, it was expected Council would also appoint a number of alternate experts to ensure that the LPP would continue to function if a member was unable to attend.

Council received an approved list of independent experts.

The list included a number of highly qualified architects and planners, many with existing panel experience. Given the calibre of these people, this list was reviewed by councillors at a Working Party held on 12th February and a short-list of potential panel members was selected based on their level of heritage expertise and knowledge of Hunters Hill. Council has now conducted interviews and information on Panel members is available on council@huntershill.nsw.gov.au.

101st birthday celebration It was my great privilege to personally congratulate Mrs Joan McKimm at her birthday celebration on March 9th. I can only imagine the changes she has witnessed throughout her life. Few have been blessed with this privilege. Throughout 101 years, she will have acquired some amazing stories, many experiences and with the passing of time, much knowledge, much understanding and certainly many friendships.

Clean Up Australia Day Importantly, the total rubbish collected this year was considerably less than in the previous year.

On Sunday 4th March, 35 volunteers collected 51.6kg mixed waste materials and 8.2kg recyclable containers/bottles at Boronia Park; and 12 volunteers collected 61.2kg mixed waste materials and 29.7kg recyclable containers/bottles at Gladesville Reserve. On Sunday 11th March, seven volunteers collected 33.6kg mixed waste materials (including toys) and 4.2kg recyclable containers/ bottles at Riverglade Reserve.

I wish to thank all volunteers who pick up rubbish regularly, as well as those participating in Clean Up events.

I recently had the honour of recounting to the Parliament the achievements of not one, but four talented, gifted and determined Lane Cove women who were nominated in the 2018 Women of the Year Awards.

Lisa Aynajian is my 2018 nominee for Local Woman of the Year.

Lisa is truly outstanding.

After completing her secondary education at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, she went on to attain her Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education before completing a Master of Inclusive Education.

With Masters in hand, she set out to pursue her passion to help students with special needs.

Lisa believes that helping children to achieve their potential is the most professionally rewarding experience possible.

Lisa consistently goes the extra mile, baking cupcakes for children with special needs and organising community events with a focus on fun for children. Her positive outlook and enormous energy distinguishes this wife and mum in making a difference for so many.

Another outstanding female is my nominee for the 2018 Minister’s Award for Women in Local Government, Councillor Deborah Hutchens, a true pillar of our community and former Mayor of Lane Cove Council.

Deborah is a Director of Sydney Community Services; a Board Member of Lane Cove Retirement Units; community representative of the North Shore Local Area Command; and initiator of Lane Cove Council’s White Ribbon Day. This incredible individual is always looking for new opportunities, creating new ideas and is committed to working for the benefit of others in the community.

Kristy Chong is another Lane Cove achiever and the winner of the NSW Business Woman of the Year, an event that recognises excellence in business.

Kristy is a mentor, presenter, advocate for body positivity and the CEO, founder and creator of Modibodi.

Modibodi is fashionable, sustainable, hi-tech, comfortable underwear which replaces disposable hygiene products. Kristy is positively changing lives.

Her goal was simple: revolutionise her industry and reduce the amount of single-use products ending up in landfill.

Kristy’s Modibodi product and program supports woman in need and is heavily involved in initiatives such as the homeless woman’s charity Share the Dignity, the McGrath Foundation and School for Life.

She took a forbidden subject and produced a revolutionary, fashionable product for women’s use and comfort.

Doctor Cathy Zhao is another outstanding Lane Cove woman and a finalist in the Harvey Norman Young Woman of the Year.

Cathy was recognised for her research on the effects of Metastatic melanoma treatments on the skin - a highly relevant topic under the Australian sun.

She is an accomplished academic, a popular lecturer and has written 17 first-author journal publications.

Cathy organised a first-of-its-type education day that brought oncologists and dermatologists together to discuss the effects of cancer therapies on skin.

As the local member, I am proud that Lane Cove is populated by outstanding women.

Congratulations on your achievements, and thank you Lisa, Deborah, Kristy and Cathy for your dedication and contributions to our community.

Labor’s plans to put their hands in the pockets of local pensioners and self-funded retirees Many local residents have contacted me in anger about Labor’s new policy to abolish tax refunds for share dividends.

Labor’s attack on savings means over one million individuals and self-managed super funds will be forced to pay tax twice on what they earn from their hard earned savings.

This would hurt 230,000 pensioners. It would hurt 610,000 Australians on taxable incomes less than $18,200, including many self-funded retirees. Tax refunds from share dividends are relied on by many retirees in our area.

St Leonards Creative Precinct Open Night Just before Easter I joined nearly 4,000 people at the fifth annual TXT Creative Precinct Block Party, unveiling a new mural by Sophie Odling.

The Creative Precinct, opened in 2014, gives working space to artists working in or between a whole range of media, with converted commercial buildings providing more than 4,500m2 of space. This is a real fillip to the arts culture on the lower north shore. Even more importantly, it is linked to mental health outreach through the Bridging Hope Charity, which provides a meeting point for mental health initiatives and artistic endeavour.

The block party was a fantastic event, and shows the continued dynamism and contributions of the arts community in St Leonards and beyond.

Vale Fr Tony Smith SJ Fr Tony Smith, the longest serving headmaster at St Aloysius’ College in Milsons Point, passed away last month. He lived for the local community, and although he is known by most for his time at St Aloysius’, he also served at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

In both colleges, Fr Tony was not just there for the students in the chapel or the classroom, but throughout their lives, to celebrate in the good times, at weddings and baptisms and to support and to console in the hard times, not only at funerals but in any time of need.

Fr Tony passed away on February 18th, having given half his life to the community of North Sydney. He lived ad majorem Dei gloriam, and the evidence is shown in the memories cherished by students, colleagues, confreres, and every one of the thousands he helped. It was an honour to speak to his achievements in Federal Parliament, and I join many in offering commiserations to those who knew Fr Tony best.

Help support our troops overseas

For Anzac Day 2018, I am asking the community for donations of items for care packages which we are collecting to send to Australian Defence Force personnel serving overseas.

This year we commemorate a century since the end of World War I, and we will remember those who served Australia in that war and those since.

At the same time that Australians take part in these commemorations at home, or travel to Gallipoli Cove or to France, more than 2000 Australian men and women will be serving overseas, protecting Australian interests, supporting our allies, and working to end conflict across the globe.

Serving in the field often means tough physical conditions, but even more than that it means separation from family and loved ones.

This year I will be collecting care packages at my office in North Sydney to support and thank our defence personnel overseas. The packages are a great boost for morale and they will be sent to our troops as part of a defence department initiative.

Items can be brought to my office at level 10, 2 Elizabeth Plaza, North Sydney, or collected by my staff, which can be arranged by calling 9929 9822.

It is suggested that residents or groups donate either a male or female care package. Packages should weigh no more than 2kg and clearly identify whether they are for a male or female.

Suggestions for donations include personal toiletries, games, books, magazines and non-perishable food (Tim Tams are popular!). Please do not include pork products, alcohol, cigarettes, or clothing.

LCFC recently competed in the FFA Cup game at Blackman Park against Granville Range.

Lane Cove FC makes early exit from FFA Cup Lane Cove FC received a tough opening round draw for this year’s FFA Cup, playing Granville Rage from the NSW NPL Third Division – some two grades higher than LCFC’s current status.

The side performed on a wet and windy night at Blackman Park in front of some 200 spectators, but two goals to Granville just before half time destroyed the fairy tale finish.

A solid second half performance ended with a 0-3 score line to Granville, a result which reflects a brave performance and gives hope for a strong season in the NSFA Premiers competition in 2018. The side will be back for another crack at the Cup in 2019 when the dream will start again!

Lane Cove FC continues to see strong growth in numbers for its 2018 season, heading towards a milestone of 1,000 registered players for the first time. New teams in Women’s All Age and 35s (for the first time), Men’s All Age and 45s will see the club field over 70 teams for the 2018 season.

The season proper starts the weekend after Easter, with the fields at Blackman Park and Pottery Green hosting the home games for the Club.

Support is always welcome for all age groups, so check the website at www.lcfc.com.au to see who is playing where and when.

The quality is good and the camaraderie even better!

LOCAL HISTORY I COMMUNITY

Garling Street remembers one of Lane Cove’s fallen sons One hundred years ago, while the nation was reading of the continuing battles on the Western Front, the Lane Cove community was mourning the loss of another of its young men.

M

ajor Terence Ward Garling, aged 24, died of wounds sustained in the second Battle of Dernancourt in France on 5th April 1918. He was one of the youngest Australians to be promoted to Major on the battlefield.

Terence was the younger son of Marie and William Mylam Nicholas Garling (b. 1841). Terence's father, William, spent much of his early life managing cattle stations in northern NSW. In 1868, William married Jessie Pitt and they had five children. Jessie died in Melbourne in 1887 and William then remarried Mary Wise (known as Marie). William and Marie moved to Sydney and had two sons - Raymond Wise Garling (b. 1892) and Terence Ward Garling (b. 1894).

By 1902, William and Marie Garling had settled into a house named ‘Glenoak’ in Burns Bay Road, Longueville (as Lane Cove was known at the time). William’s sons, Raymond and Terence, crossed the Lane Cove River each day to attend nearby Hunters Hill Public School. By 1907 the family had moved into a newly built house named ‘Angledene’ a short distance away. Raymond became a clerk with C.S.R. (Colonial Sugar Refining Company) and Terence became a clerk with Trebeck, Son & Co. Stock & Station agents. Both young men undertook military training with the citizens’ forces prior to the outbreak of World War One. On 8th October 1914, Terence Ward Garling enlisted at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and embarked on HMAT A8 Argyllshire.

At Gallipoli in September 1915 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. In August 1916, on the French battlefields, Terence was promoted to Captain.

Despite his injuries and time away for training, Terence regularly returned to his unit at the front. In April 1917 he was promoted to temporary Major, and was confirmed as a Major in May 1917.

In September 1917 Terence was gassed and transferred to hospital in England. By the end of January 1918, he rejoined the 37th Battery in the field in France, but on the 5th April 1918 he was badly wounded, suffering a thigh fracture from a shell during severe enemy fire at Millencourt, near Albert, during the battle of Derancourt. Despite surgery at the field station, they were unable to stop the bleeding and Terence died a few hours later. He was buried nearby in the WarloyBaillon Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Lane Cove Council sent a letter of condolence to his parents on 22nd April 1918. The receipt of a Returned Thanks from them was noted in Council’s May meeting minutes.

The following year, William Garling wrote to Council suggesting that a street in the Sofala Estate Subdivision be named ‘Terence Garling Street’ in memory of his son. Council suggested that the name be submitted to the developers of the Parklands No. 2 Estate. In July 1919, William Garling again wrote to Council, indicating that while the developers were favourable to Garling Street, they should be allowed to add the prefix ‘Terence’ to the street name. When the Parklands No. 2 Estate subdivision offered building blocks for sale in September 1919, four new streets - Garling, Munro, Gentle and Hallam - were named to honour and remember local lads who had lost their lives in war.

T.W. Garling is remembered on the World War One Honour Board located in the Lane Cove Council foyer. In 1920, ‘W. Garling of Longueville’ received poppy seeds from Villers-Bretonneux, France via the Sydney Botanic Gardens.

Terence’s letters as well as other memorabilia were kept by his family in a special box. This collection was later donated to the NSW State Library.

How objective is your art?

Objectivity was a major thread running through Patrick Carroll’s painting demonstration at the Lane Cove Art Society’s first meeting for 2018.

A multi award-winning artist, Patrick is a well-known tutor and art teacher and he raised many questions throughout his relaxed yet thorough presentation.

So what makes a painting successful? The challenge for Patrick seemed to be capturing a level of abstraction in his work – not being a slave to recreating exactly what was in front of him.

Tone and composition are so vital to the outcome of an artwork or print. If either element is not working, then the outcome will be unsuccessful.

Using acrylic paints, Patrick commenced his demonstration on a rough toothed, square canvas. The subject matter was from a photo depicting a landscape scene. A few free marks were quickly put down as a general outline for what was to follow. “Inject your own response to the subject even as a rough drawing,” remarked Patrick. Whilst objectivity is the ultimate goal, ironically a certain degree of subjectivity is also required because passion is a vital ingredient in making art.

The original voice of Patrick’s painting style was observed throughout the demonstration. Having devoted most of his life to making marks, Patrick was able to show and discuss freely so many painterly ‘tricks’ and philosophical views. Scraping back into the painting with old credit cards, knitting needles, branches or other tools injected wonderful texture and life into his work. These unusual tools served to heighten the objectivity of the work.

“Exploit artistic license,” exclaimed Patrick. He added a higher horizon because he felt that was needed compositionally. He constantly danced to and fro from the painting, all the while assessing where to go next in view of the recent brush strokes and colours that had been applied. Most artists perform this creative dance as a means of balancing the objective and the subjective marks that are made.

As the landscape gained clarity through the application of vertical and horizontal brush strokes, Patrick (not unlike Cezanne), reminded his audience that he was seeing the ‘shapes’ in the landscape, rather than the rocks and trees. He was looking for squares, circles, rectangles and triangles and in so doing, was injecting an abstract element into the painting. His motheaten-looking, dishevelled brushes assisted in this task!

These particular brushes were fabulous for producing wonderful tree type marks.

Another step towards attaining more objectivity occurred when Patrick moved a laminated sheet across his work. Marks were blurred and gained more character, enhancing the mysterious quality of the work. Acrylics are forgiving so Patrick had no hesitation in using these measures. He can work over a painting many times before he achieves the harmony he is seeking.

The aim of the Lane Cove Art Society is to encourage, recognise and reward artistic talent in the community. We warmly welcome new members – the sole requirement is an interest in art.

The Lane Cove Art Society also holds two exhibitions yearly as well as workshops, visits to galleries or artists’ studios, and mini-exhibitions for members.

The Lane Cove Art Society meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except Jan/Dec) at the Living & Leisure Centre, 180 Longueville Rd Lane Cove (almost opposite the Lane Cove Library).

The meetings start at 7:30pm with time to meet and talk prior to the demonstration.

At each meeting there is a demonstration or talk by a leading artist or guest speaker and anyone interested in art is welcome to attend.

NEXT MEETING

The April meeting of the Lane Cove Art Society will include a demonstration by Rosa Fedele, an oil painter known for her portrait and figurative work.

A finalist in the Portia Geach Award 2017, Rosa loves the dramatic use of light and colour.

The Society’s Annual General Meeting will also be held.

Maybe the main lesson from Patrick’s enjoyable demonstration was that all artists need to get a little more objectivity into their work.

Think about what original tools you can bring to your painting or printing to see how it changes your mark making.

Discover the ancient and contemplative craft of basket making with professional basket maker Meredith (Meri) Peach. In this workshop, students will learn the technique of coiled basketry, where materials are stitched together.

Whereas plant materials were traditionally used for this technique, this workshop features a modern twist, making use of reclaimed materials such as plastic bags, scrap fabrics, onion bags, chip wrappers and scrap wool to create a colourful basketry bowl. This is a great way to upcycle some waste materials from around the house.

Included in the workshop will be discussion around the history and culture of basket making; explanation of choosing and preparing materials; and demonstrations followed by oneto-one instruction.

Meri makes functional baskets and sculptures from both natural and reclaimed materials. She is an experienced teacher of basketry, has held several Artist in Residence positions and regularly exhibits her work in galleries. Meri is currently the President of Basketry NSW Inc. Meri will provide all necessary materials, but students may also bring their own reclaimed materials for experimentation.

Most kinds of cordage and flexible materials that can be cut into long narrow strips are suitable; for instance, plastics, fabrics, rubber, leather, wool, mesh, soft wires, electrical cords. Plastic bags from the supermarket checkout are NOT suitable, they need to be the smoother, sturdier kind (eg. from fashion shops).

Students need to bring scissors. No previous basketry experience is necessary.

From the Latin divertere (meaning ‘turn aside’), diversion has several meanings in modern English.

A diversion can be a means of turning something aside from its course; departing from the usual route; or reallocating something for a different purpose.

In this exhibition, Basketry NSW members present striking and whimsical fibre works in response to the theme of diversion.

Yarn bombing comes to the Gallery! Part exhibition, part experiment, part social space, Embrace is an extension of Lane Cove artist Cee Egan’s public art practice. The site will be transformed by yarn, knitting together stories past and musings of what is to come.

NATURAL DYEING Workshop with Karen Tam

Date: 10.30am – 3.00pm, Saturday 28th April Cost: $140.00 Note: Over 18s only. Butane gas and burners will be used.

This introductory workshop will focus on exploring natural colour from flowers and foliage and other ingredients like turmeric and food waste.

Students will develop an understanding of dyeing fabric samples and dye their own silk scarf using basic shibori methods.

Learn how to bundle dye using flowers, leaves and steam. The focus of the workshops is to share Karen’s love for dyeing with natural dyestuffs and earth friendly ingredients in a fun and sustainable way.

This workshop is suitable for beginners – intermediate.

MINIATURE ART Workshop

Date: 10.00 am – 4.00pm, Saturday 21st April Cost: $100 Miniature art in the 21st century is as broad and exciting in its scope as large work. The artists use every medium - from oil paint, watercolour and graphite to collage, printmaking, handmade books and sculpture - but the image can be no more than 40cm in perimeter (ie 10 x 10cm or similar).

Three-dimensional work can be no more than 15cm in any direction.

The miniature artists leading the workshop will explain the principles and parameters that guide miniature art; the best surfaces to work on, and brushes etc to use. For this workshop, it is suggested that the art form would be painting or drawing. The attendees can work in the medium of their choice, and will need to bring all their own materials.

The workshop is specially designed for experienced artists who are interested in developing their practice in miniature. It will be in a format similar to a mentor group for experienced artists wanting to expand their repertoire of work.

NSW Government reintroduces land-clearing law The NSW Government’s changes to planning laws and policies are complicated matters that are central business for Lane Cove’s Bushland & Conservation Society, with the current boom in development applications heavily impacting the health and scale of the natural environment of Lane Cove.

The NSW Government has just reintroduced a critical part of ‘landclearing laws’ that the Land and Environment Court ruled invalid, remaking the codes overnight.

The laws will accelerate wildlife habitat destruction and damage our local environment. They are so flexible that they could lead to the loss of bushland pockets in Lane Cove, as the flawed ‘biodiversity off-setting’ rules can affect urban areas.

“By the Government’s own assessment, they will lead to a spike in clearing of up to 45 per cent and expose threaten wildlife habitat to destruction, including 99 per cent of identified koala habitat on private land," said Nature Conservation Council CEO Kate Smolski, referring to advice from the Office of Environment and Heritage to Ms Upton, MP (SMH).

"Only 1 per cent of koala habitat on private land is safe!”

Under the new laws, ‘off-setting’

for the loss of trees/ bushland to a development will result in the degradation of nature in exchange for cash payments and other unsatisfactory outcomes as it is subject to ‘discounts’ at decision-makers’ discretion and payments in lieu of genuine offsets. A developer, or even local council, could offer alternative land within 100km of Lane Cove as being equivalent to the vegetation to be removed for development. This is against the advice of leading scientists and would degrade Lane Cove.

Under Luke Foley, NSW Labor has committed to repealing the entire Land Clearing Laws if elected in 2019.

Lane Cove is regularly challenged by developers who routinely attempt to exceed our carefully worked out local development controls (eg. Northwood proposal and near the Harry Howard walk), and chip away at the narrow remnant At the bushland that current rate, makes Lane Cove unique, and that even the koala cleans and cools may be gone the air. Increasing from NSW by population, parking 2055. and traffic also remove trees from schools, parks and streets (eg. Greenwich school, Centennial Ave ‘tractor’ park).

People who value nature or who have architectural skills, an interest in environmental management, planning etc, are encouraged to join the varied Society members in any capacity to further these interests.

The ‘heavy lifting’ of the Society is in reviewing local DA’s, often adjoining bushland, and writing submissions on our members’ behalf, such as our submission on ‘The Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) Review’. As only 9% of the native forests that remain are protected in national parks or conservation areas, and much is slated for logging as state forests, incredibly important wildlife habitats and stunning landscapes are at risk. The LCBCS found that the progress report for the RFA review “fails to provide any data to support the assertions that logging is conforming to Ecologically Sustainable Forest Management”.

So what can you do to stop the prediction that at the current rate, even the koala may be gone from NSW by 2055?

New solar mapping tool for Lane Cove Lane Cove Council has launched a free online Solar Mapping Tool which allows residents and businesses to estimate the potential for solar electricity generation on their roof.

The tool provides consumers with information that will assist with solar purchasing decisions. With 10% of Lane Cove buildings already benefiting from solar panels, there remains significant potential for solar energy across the community.

The Solar Mapping Tool provides a key benefit for Lane Cove residents and businesses by taking into consideration roof pitch and orientation, as well as shade from nearby buildings and trees. Using the tool will provide a more accurate insight into the potential energy savings you can achieve from installing a solar system on your home or business.

Thank you to the community for embracing our world premiere production of Rodney Stewart’s Vicki, which ran for three performances in February.

Rodney, a Lane Cove local, wrote the original tale of ‘Rikki’ in the 1970’s. There was professional interest in the play, but it was so distorted by the producers that it ended up being unrecognisable.

Rodney laid his script aside for many years to pursue other ventures and came back to it about ten years ago. We were thrilled to be able to stage this tale of four survivors of a nuclear attack – a poet, a painter, a scientist and a robot.

The fun script and catchy musical numbers made it a very memorable production which audiences and critics thoroughly enjoyed.

This comic masterpiece mocks the simple morality of sentimental comedies of the period. Subtitled The Mistakes of a Night, the play is a lighthearted farce that derives its charm from the misunderstandings which entangle the well-drawn characters.

When Marlow mistakes Kate’s house for an inn and treats her father like an inn-keeper, things are not going so smoothly for him. With her brother causing mischief, her father insulted and her mother plotting a marriage that nobody wants, it’s no wonder Kate has to stoop to conquer.

This production belongs to that small group of classic English comedies which never go out of fashion. Directed by Peter Farmer who has directed Away, The 39 Steps, Shadowlands and Charley’s Aunt for LCTC, this production promises to be a true comedic delight - a sweet concoction of Goldsmith’s sly language and lovable characters. He has given us a rarity - a comedy that, like Shakespeare’s comedies, has withstood the test of time.

The cast includes Ross Scott, Alison Grace, Katie Regan, Ross Holohan, William Burke, Simon Emmerson, Esther Hannan-Moon, Natasha Nogueira, Henry Taylor, Antony Akle and Larissa Turton.

Involving children in Family Dispute Resolution After their parents separate, should children have a say in what happens to them?

The reality is that historically, in Australia, parents have tended to believe they can work out arrangements without their children’s direct involvement.

It is true that mostly parents are successful in working out the terms of their separation, and can do so without having to go to court.

Often they will use a process called Family Dispute Resolution (or FDR). This is a very effective mediation process in which an experienced and impartial Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner sees both parties individually and prepares and assists them to meet together with the Practitioner and reach their own resolution. Under the Family Law Act, for the great majority of separating parents it is compulsory to try FDR before starting court proceedings.

But in this process, the children’s views are usually not taken into account. Mostly parents attend FDR alone, without the children.

But there is a process by which they can directly involve their children in the

process. It’s called Child Inclusive Family Dispute Resolution.

Child Inclusive FDR involves appointing a qualified ‘child expert’ who interviews the parents and then the children separately.

Then the child expert provides feedback to the parents of the children’s needs, wishes and perceptions.

A major study in 2007 showed that involving children from separated families in Child Inclusive FDR achieved remarkably successful results. And not just for older children. Children who were quite young could express views and perceptions of their parents’ separation and express their desires. The children enjoyed and benefitted from having their views and perceptions taken into account. Child Inclusive FDR produced better outcomes and more sustainable and longer lasting parenting agreements. The children’s views had a salutary effect on their parents, who often needed to hear their children’s views; frequently to the effect that the children loved both parents and wanted the arguments to end.

To date, Child Inclusive FDR hasn’t been common in Australia. Both parents have to agree to it, and the belief seems

to persist amongst parents that they can work out better arrangements without their children’s direct involvement.

Indeed, Child Inclusive FDR is not suitable in every case. But for parents concerned as to the effect of the separation on their children, and who want the best outcomes for their children’s welfare, it is worthwhile discussing Child Inclusive FDR with a family lawyer who can arrange it, or with a Family Relationships Centre.

In 1990, Australia became one of the first countries in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This convention has now been ratified by every member of the United Nations, except the USA. Among the rights enshrined by the Convention is the principle that children have a right to express their own views freely in all matters affecting their welfare.

Child Inclusive FDR puts children’s rights front and centre, and is in accordance with our commitment to the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child.

The emerging Games in the Park, held on the last Sunday afternoon of the month at Helen Street reserve in Lane Cove North, is a good example of this. An initiative of Lane Cove Community Chaplaincy and the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, others quickly joined in.

Local groups, a business and neighbours also offered their talents free of charge. This enables far more to be offered to our local community: table tennis, cricket, bowls, volleyball, Frisbee, massage, face painting, orienteering, and a free barbecue are the current activities on a growing list. It’s fun to be part of the team, discovering new facets and new friends.

My experience shows it’s far better to focus on the abilities of others (and my own) than upon the deficits. Encouraging people to find and utilise their gifts is enriching. What facets in your life are waiting to catch the light? Unleash them and we will all be the richer!
