It never ceases to amaze me the range of talented people who make up our community. People doing incredible work and who make significant contributions to the betterment of not only our community, but also society as a whole.

This month we talk to one such person. Professor Gordon Parker, a long-time local resident and eminent psychiatrist, founded the Black Dog Institute in 2002.

Gordon has dedicated his career to researching and treating people with mood disorders - particularly depression and bipolar. He has recently unleashed his more creative side and this month has released a new novel ‘In Two Minds’. Turn to page 4 to find out more about Gordon, his work and his new book.

The International Women’s Day forum showcased more local people doing great things. A large audience gathered to hear Moo Baulch, Emma Bird, Kerry Chikarovski, Kellie Rigney, Sabrina Saldana and Karen Smith speak on the night.

Local GP Dr Sabrina Saldanha gave a particularly touching account of her arrival in Australia in 1960 together with her parents and young brother. Sabrina talked about the kindness that was extended to her family by a lady who overheard their plight on a Melbourne tram as her parents struggled to find accommodation in a new country where they knew no-one and with only $10 in their wallet. One woman’s kindness changed their whole desperate situation. It was a reminder for us all to extend the hand of friendship beyond the people within our immediate circle, as one small act can sometimes change lives. Thank you Sabrina for sharing your story.

Artists around the area are busily putting the final touches on their artworks with two major exhibitions coming up. Lane Cove’s artXtra and the Hunters Hill Art Exhibition both take place in May, so if you have a spare wall, it’s the perfect time to treat yourself with a new piece of art by a local artist. In Two Minds Long-time Northwood resident, Professor Gordon Parker, describes his life working as a psychiatrist as being like a ‘pig in mud’.

But his path could have been very different, grappling at an early age with the dilemma of whether to choose a medical or writing career. By Jocelyn Biddle.

Doctor Martin Homer has a naturally sunny disposition.

Honourable, attentive and trusted by all of his patients, he has only ever loved one woman – his wife, Sarah.

When his mother dies suddenly, Martin’s life is thrown into complete disarray. His profound grief sinks him into a state of black dog depression, before he is propelled to new heights in a frenzied, manic high.

In between riding his new skateboard around the streets and skating on thin ice personally and professionally, the now self-entitled Martin crosses paths with Bella, a beautiful and sensual young woman profoundly damaged by trauma of her own.

Professor Gordon Parker AO is the founder and former Executive Director of the Black Dog Institute.

Currently Scientia Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales, he was, for nearly two decades, Head of the School of Psychiatry at UNSW and Director of the Division of Psychiatry at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals. His first novel was published in 1966, and he has written for The Mavis Bramston Show and OZ Magazine. He was an ABC Science broadcaster and a book reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian. His play, Personality Games, was staged in 2004 while his autobiography, A Piece of My Mind: A Psychiatrist on the Couch, was published in 2012.

t was medicine that ultimately won out and in the past 50 years, Gordon has established himself as an internationally recognised psychiatrist specialising in mood disorders. He has also written prolifically on the topic, producing hundreds of research papers and books.

Gordon has more recently indulged his creative side with the release of his second fiction novel – some five decades after the first. Having spent his career writing technical books and papers on mental illness, he was keen to step out of his comfort zone.

“When I wrote my first novel in 1966, I’d sit down and type in the evening and all of a sudden it would be 3am. I was keen to test if I could ‘capture the muse again’ by experiencing the novel’s characters taking on a life of their own.”

The result is a novel that has seen two of Gordon’s passions - psychiatry and writing coincide.

In Two Minds, which was released on April 1st, follows the story of Martin, a Sydneybased GP. Martin is a high achiever who is popular amongst his friends, patients and colleagues. However the death of his mother triggers an episode of melancholic depression, later followed by a manic state, that sees him being lead astray by the alluring, yet manipulative Bella.

The situation is completely out of character for Martin, who is a loyal and devoted husband to his long-standing wife Sarah - who happens to be away on a business trip at the time.

What unravels is a series of events that sees Martin, Bella and Sarah struggling with the fallout of his actions, representative of the risk-taking behaviours often seen when someone is in the grip of a psychotic episode.

The insights that Gordon has gleaned from years of clinical practice listening to the narrative of people with mental health issues brings an insightful perspective to the novel.

By writing In Two Minds, Gordon was not only able to quell his writer’s itch, but it also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of mood disorders - particularly bipolar disorder.

Gordon is a passionate advocate for identifying two mood conditions - melancholia and bipolar disorder. He established the Mood Disorders Unit at Prince Henry Hospital in 1985 in order to improve their diagnosis and management.

“My raison d’être has been to provide the right diagnosis with the right management. If you do that, people can get their life back and you obviate suicide risk.

“At the end of one hour with a patient, I want to be able to provide them with a diagnosis, treatment options and plenty of information so that they can make an informed decision as to the best path forward.”

With a long list of career highlights, the pinnacle for Gordon was founding the Black Dog Institute in 2002.

“We established the Black Dog Institute to expand clinical services and drive research in order to better understand, prevent and treat the mood disorders, and to help create a world where mental illness is treated with the same level of concern, immediacy and seriousness as physical illness.”

The Institute now has over 100 staff who conduct research, offer clinical services, and provide health professional training and community education programs.

Sophisticated information is presented on the Institute’s website, together with online questionnaires that people can use to test themselves for depression (which affects about one in four women and one in six men over their lifetime), bipolar or anxiety.

Each month, around 60 thousand people undertake the bipolar test alone.

“Clinical depression is impairing - you can’t get to work or function properly and you see no future. It’s not a matter of just ‘pulling your socks up’ - it can completely bring you to your knees.”

As the Executive Director of the Black Dog Institute up until 2012, Gordon was also Head of the School of Psychiatry at the University of NSW and Director of the Division of Psychiatry at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals for nearly two decades.

Gordon is currently Scientia Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales. He continues to research, teach and lecture at the university and is a prolific writer of academic books and research articles on the topic of mood disorders.

It is the experiences from a career spent diagnosing and treating thousands of patients that provides readers of In Two Minds with such a fascinating insight into the world of mental illness - from both a patient and clinician perspective.

In the novel, central character Martin switches from a depressive state into a manic psychosis, enabling Gordon to show readers the two ends of the spectrum often experienced by bipolar sufferers.

“Bipolar can take people from clinical depression, where they can’t get out of bed to move their car, through to a psychotic episode where they are on an absolute high and undertake risky behaviours. They go from ‘parking’ fines to ‘speeding’ fines.”

Which is exactly what happens with Martin. Through his character, Gordon shows how patients can become delusional and lose all inhibitions while in a manic state.

“Terrible things can happen when people move into the highs of bipolar as they experience massive changes in their extra sensory perception, libido, levels of selfishness and entitlement.”

Although Gordon says that 80% of his book is based on imagination, it is informed by his clinical practice and what patients have explained about their own experiences in living with a mood disorder.

“A main complication in treating people with a bipolar disorder is that sufferers love the highs so much that they have to be persuaded to stay on medication in order to manage their condition.

“Really creative people are 3-4 times more likely to have a bipolar disorder. When they’re on a high, they perform well and are on top of the world. They worry that medication may take away their creativity, although research does not support such a concern, and many choose to stay off it.”

According to Gordon, sometimes people need to ‘crash’ 3-6 times before they learn the high price of not managing their illness with medication - whether it is through damage to themselves or the people around them.

Gordon explores this with his character Martin and the reader is left hanging as to whether the thrills associated with his manic high could cause him to further jeopardise the one relationship he holds most dear.

Gordon’s daughter-in-law and fellow local Lane Cove resident, Aura Parker, illustrated the striking front cover, which carries a highly praised quote by Stephen Fry endorsing the novel.

Council to consider impounding boat trailers

Housing targets for Lane Cove too high

Council is applying to the Office of Local Government to declare its interest in implementing the Impounding Amendment (Unattended Boat Trailers) Act 2015. This Act allows Councils to take action where a boat trailer has been in the same on street location for more than 28 days.

In 2016, Council received on average of four complaints per month in relation to boat trailers. The complaints generally related to loss of amenity in terms of local streetscape or concerns about non-residents parking their trailers in their street.

The legislation attempts to regulate the parking of boat trailers on public roads. It prescribes that boat trailers are to be moved at least every 28 days.

Should a regulatory officer observe a trailer not having been moved within the previous 28 days, they must give 15 days’ notice to the owner to move the trailer so as to avoid impounding. If Council does not receive any correspondence from the owner after the 15 days’ notice period, Council would instruct its service provider to remove the trailer. The trailer would be then held for a further 28 days at Council’s impounding yard. The trailer would then be sold through an auction process if the trailer is not claimed within the specified time frame.

Council intends to consult with community and neighbouring councils regarding its intention to implement the legislation.

The draft District Plans released by the Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) provide a 20-year vision that sets targets for housing, economic hubs, transport infrastructure, natural landscapes and heritage.

For Lane Cove, targets have been set to include an additional 1,900 dwellings over the next five years (2016-2021). The Plan also provides a population target, which would see Lane Cove increase by 14,900 people to 50,859 people.

To date, the development in Lane Cove over the past five years has already exceeded the growth targets set by the State Government.

Whereas 3900 new dwellings were required by 2031, Council has approved 3919 additional dwellings since 2010. This together with a current DA at St Leonards for 458 apartments, would if approved, see it increase to 4377 dwellings.

In 2010 there were 12,606 rateable residential properties, so a 4377 dwelling increase would equate to approximately 35% additional dwellings. Further planning for St Leonards South will deliver an additional 2200+ dwellings, and a planning proposal in St Leonards will deliver 450 units, equating to a 55% increase.

Given that Lane Cove is already well ahead of current growth targets, Council considers it important that the Commission’s projections in the final plan acknowledge the limited capacity for further dwellings in the Lane Cove LGA. The Commission’s plan also lacks detail on the infrastructure required to accommodate such population growth including primary/secondary schools; more open space and the changing need/ opportunities this creates (synthetic grass etc); and the need for connection between/among communities.

Council intends to support the Draft North Plan in principle, but will highlight these and other concerns.

Petition against proposed floodlights on Mowbray Oval Willoughby Council are proposing floodlights for Mowbray Oval. Presently the oval is used for school use 7 days per week all year round, for school and sport.

Residents in Ulm Street, Lane Cove are concerned about the proposed extended hours of use due to the direct and ongoing environmental impact to their homes.

CONCERNS INCLUDE: Parking: with no off street parking, Ulm and surrounding streets are already full when sports matches or training is on. Curfew: once the lights are installed, there is a concern Council could extend the proposed curfew beyond 9pm.

Light: the glow from the oval lights will illuminate the backyards on the south side of the street impacting residents with young families, or elderly residents disturbed by light.

Local parkland: extended sporting hours of use until after dark, summer and winter, could restrict community access. Noise: increasing hours of play effectively means an extended curfew for noise associated with sporting matches every evening.

During a Welcome BBQ on Saturday 18th March, existing families at Birrahlee Preschool were on hand to witness the official opening of the new playground areas by Mayor Councillor Deborah Hutchens.

Designed by Edible Kids Gardens, the redevelopment was made possible with the addition of a $2300 grant from Lane Cove Council, and has significantly enhanced the outdoor space available for

the children to play, learn and thrive.

Birrahlee set out to create a fun, natural environment which is dynamic, ever-changing and enticing for children to explore and stimulate their imagination.

The play space needed to engage all the senses through careful selection of textural, colourful and scented plants, foliage and fruits which change through the seasons.

Linking the healthy food policy at Birrahlee, the addition of edible plants and a veggie patch helps to connect the children to the food they eat - how their fruit and veggies grow; how soils, air, water, food, animals and waste are so intimately linked; and how each of us has a role to play in contributing to and shaping these systems.

The construction of bridges, pathways and tunnels aim to guide and entice the children through the space while also promoting balance and gross motor skills.

100 words Alice Street is where my heart flies when I think of my beautiful brothers, parents and wonderful grandmother.

Now ghosts who I can conjure up, my throat tightens as I reminisce. It was there I played in the security of family.

Happy innocent days, my imagination was boundless, I was Tarzan.

Sixty years ago we played under the home of my Nan. I’m now her age and realise the powerful truths that she showed me.

One day, when my grand daughter is still young enough to imagine but old enough to appreciate, I will take her to see Alice Street.

The brush turkey was an unwelcome visitor. With powerful, sinewy legs and sharp, clawed feet it destroyed the beautifully tended garden as it explored, sweeping up the carefully laid out mulch into nesting mounds with no regard for the work of the gardener who had created a wonderful sanctuary.

Distraught, the gardener took advice how to discourage this wilful beast. Many methods were employed and eventually the turkey sought refuge elsewhere. But it was only a pyrrhic victory for the garden’s owner.

Nature had worked a miracle and this week a healthy, fluffy baby chick emerged. The rhythm of life!

It’s so late it’s early when I rub the cleanser into skin: the smoky light of winter dawn diffuses through the window and brushes across pale, fleshy stomach swelling over the sides of dark jeans. Nobody except for me is awake but I pull my jeans up anyway: inhale – tight! – and exhale carefully.

That’s when I catch my eyes in the mirror, staring sorrowfully from their sunken, sleepless self-pity. They are cast against a face stripped of mineral powder, a face that suddenly stings and I splash water, reach blindly for a towel. The cleanser bleaches it between my hands.

Blood. Gushing, spurting, pooling before my eyes. It must have hit an artery. I felt sick; nauseous. I closed my eyes. Deep breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Come on, you can do this. I forced them open, taking in the ghastly scene. He was trying to stem the blood flow with his hands, the red seeping through his fingers. My vision was going fuzzy – my brain trying to save me. I couldn’t do this. Picking up the remote, I hit fast forward and sighed bitterly. I was never going to be ready for Game of Thrones.

Needing milk, I'd gone to Coles in my worn tradie gear - khaki shorts, short-sleeved shirt and sandshoes and on return was carrying a fabric bag with my needs plus an impulse purchase of frying pan and saucepan.

I was ten metres short of my door next to the hotel when the girl spoke to me.

"It's raining, isn't it."

"Yes it is," I agreed. Wonder what brought that on? I thought as I walked past. Four steps further on, she called after me "Have you got a home?"

The answer was clear. As a vagrant, I needed help.

Like all great works of art, time and care are required in helping your child through adolescence.

This stage is all about creating an identity, an image.

It is a time for recognising one’s strengths, weaknesses and roles within the family and extended peer group.

The teenage years are characterised by disengagement from parents and an intense emotional life. There can be an associated period of grief and loss at the reality of losing one’s childhood which, combined with puberty and its considerable biological changes, has the potential to produce significant changes in behaviour. Add to that academic expectations, peer group pressure and the natural pursuit of fun and risk taking and the scene is set for some individuals in this age group to become vulnerable to unhelpful coping strategies.

In their search for an identity that fits, young people will find creative ways to satisfy their feelings of inferiority and their need to belong. Sometimes however the creative means are not healthy and can lead to social, emotional, and physical problems.

Teenagers need at least one caring adult to help them negotiate the challenges in their lives and to understand their behaviour without judgment. The adult’s goal is to raise self-esteem and provide guidance for good decision-making.

Expectations of conduct should be communicated clearly, whilst allowing for mistakes and set-backs. They need to know that failure is a normal part of life and has nothing to do with their self-worth or identity.

Expect challenging behaviour from your adolescent - it’s a normal part of their development. Listen carefully and try not to interrupt, even if what they 12 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 261 I APRIL 2017

are telling you feels uncomfortable. Ask non-direct, general questions creating an environment devoid of judgment or blame so that the young person feels safe to make mistakes.

Choice and negotiation are very important to this age group, along with mutual respect and a sense of control over their own decisions.

Use an approach of curiosity “help me understand…” or “explain that to me…” and treat the young person as the expert in their own life. Be aware of your own attitudes, upbringing and beliefs and maintain appropriate boundaries ensuring that there is consistency, flexibility and fairness in your approach.

Parents can cope with their teenager’s push for independence and identity if they recognise that adolescence is a ten to fifteen-year transitional period in the journey towards adulthood. It is not an overnight accomplishment.

Understanding teenagers and young adults - a learning and support group for parents Come along and be empowered with knowledge and understanding so that you may improve your interpersonal relationships and your ability to help those you care for.

Offering parents both theory and personalised, hands-on learning in a supportive, counselling environment, this forum (maximum 4 participants) is as much about parents’ wellbeing as it is about gaining a deeper understanding of the young person in your life and enhancing harmony within the family home.

Some of the topics explored will include communication, coping and defence mechanisms, mental health issues (anxiety, depression and anger) and self-care.

For all of you who have said to us over time that it can be hard to get appointments, help is at hand.

Dom has spent the last month with us in the practice observing and training. He has now started taking on a full case load.

Dom grew up locally and recently graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. Whilst studying, he volunteered as a physiotherapist at various sporting events including the City to Surf, GPS Basketball and state and local netball. He has also worked as a volunteer physiotherapist with disabled children in Vietnam, and with local intellectually disabled members of our community helping them to integrate into the community.

Dom brings with him first-hand experience in a variety of sports including surfing, running (half marathons), rugby, touch football, swimming and tennis. This also means he has had experience of being a patient at physiotherapy practices. Being an injured athlete gives great insight into what it feels like to be on the receiving end of treatment.

Mortgage Choices Fixed rates gaining popularity. New data has revealed that over 20% of borrowers are choosing to fix their home loan. According to the latest national home loan approval data from Mortgage Choice, fixed rate home loans accounted for 22% of all loans written in February.

Mortgage Choice Lane Cove Principal, Stephanie Cook, says “traditionally Australians prefer variable rate loans for the flexibility they offer, however, given that so many lenders have raised their interest rates over the past few weeks, I am not surprised to see 1 in 5 borrowers opting for a fixed rate mortgage.”

How do I know if I have OSA?

The key symptom is being tired and unrefreshed in the morning after a night’s sleep. Afternoon sleepiness and a certain dullness or fogginess of memory and concentration often also occurs.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you or others may notice any number of the following. These symptoms can be low grade and subtle in the early stages of OSA. • Loud snoring: If your wife or husband has left the marital bed, get checked for OSA asap! Snoring is a big turnoff for marital relationships.

• Observed episodes by your beloved of stopped breathing or choking at night, particularly whilst sleeping on your back.

• Morning headaches and a sore or dry throat.

• Sudden waking overnight with gasping and/ or choking episodes.

• Mood changes such as depression, nighttime sweating and decreased libido.

Q:

Can children have OSA?

Yes. This is usually related to huge tonsils and/ or adenoids blocking their airways. Such children need to see an ENT surgeon for removal of their tonsils and/ or adenoids. For those parents anxious about the loss of their child’s tonsils (which are a first-line immune defence organ), they may elect to have the tonsils

debulked (a relatively new procedure) so as to open up the child’s airway.

Q: When should I see a Doctor?

Any collection of symptoms that is significantly affecting your life really needs to be investigated. Not having OSA is one thing, but missing it altogether is a disaster waiting to happen.

Do mention OSA as a possibility to your doctor if you are experiencing loss of energy, get up and go, quickness of thought, alertness, sleep satisfaction, concentration or the inability to have easy follow through of tasks or projects later in the day without sleepiness.

Also keep in mind the other subtle symptoms mentioned above.

Q:

What causes OSA?

The Mayo Clinic writes the following with simple diagrams – it’s well worth a visit if you’re worried about OSA. When the muscles at the back of your throat relax so much that they narrow and interfere with the normal airway, then OSA may develop. When muscle tone relaxes, collapse occurs and so obstruction develops.

Your brain notices the reduced oxygen flow and so rouses you from your sleep to take a decent breath to open

your airway.

You wake up briefly and take a few breaths to restore the oxygen level to the brain. This is when you may gasp or choke, even briefly. This pattern may occur up to 30 times a minute in severe cases. You never get down to deep, satisfying and restoring grade 5 sleep where the brain reorganises itself in ways we do not fully understand.

Q:

What are the risk factors in OSA? Excess weight; an anatomically narrowed airway; chronic nasal congestion either anatomically or from hay fever; smoking; diabetes; being male; having a family history of OSA, and asthma are all associated with an increased risk of OSA.

Q: What are the outcomes of untreated OSA? Some disasters such as Chernobyl have been attributed in part to OSA. Many car accidents involve drivers falling asleep at the wheel, some likely from OSA (2-5 times more likely, according to the Woolcock Institute).

Closer to home there are associations between OSA and coronary artery disease, heart attacks and high blood pressure. Diabetes, glaucoma and stroke are associated too.

All are good reasons to be checked if you suspect OSA.

Should I be using a mouthwash?

Mouthwash can be useful in many instances, but actually detrimental in others. Let me attempt to explain that statement.

If we have a specific condition we are trying to treat, mouthwash can be of great assistance.

For example, according to countless studies, patients with a particular tendency towards tooth decay benefit greatly from regular use of fluoridecontaining rinses.

Also, patients with acute or chronic gum infections have a much easier time recovering and achieving resolution if they use a mouthwash that contains antibacterial agents such as chlorhexidine. Similarly, patients who have had oral surgery have an easier time avoiding post-operative infections if they use an antiseptic mouthwash in the first few days after their procedure.

Most people know that we need to increase the amount of fatty fish we eat. The Heart Foundation recommends that we eat three serves per week of oily fish, which gives us up to 500mg per day of Omega-3 fatty acids. But this raises questions. Is eating fish sufficient or do we need to take supplements? Are the cells in our bodies actually getting the benefit of the fish oil? How do we know if we are getting enough?

Some mouthwashes contain anti-inflammatory ingredients.

If you have mouth ulcers, these can help reduce pain and speed up healing.

Mouthwash cons As I have just outlined, mouthwashes are very useful to treat specific conditions.

However, for patients who don’t fall into any of these categories, my strong recommendation is to forget using them. There are two main reasons:

1. When using a mouthwash as part of a normal daily routine, the temptation to underdo or completely skip regular brushing and flossing altogether is far too great.

Because mouthwash leaves our mouths feeling so fresh and clean, we trick ourselves into thinking this is enough.

However, it does absolutely nothing to shift plaque from

Omega-3 levels in the blood can now be measured by using a simple tool called the Omega-3 Index test. It measures the percentage concentration of omega 3 levels in red blood cells. The benefits of using red blood cells are that they are easy to measure, they have a similar fatty acid content to other tissues in the body and the fatty acid levels in them are relatively stable.

A low Omega-3 Index carries with it a high risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, poor brain function, depression and other health issues. This is shown in studies where patient groups with these diseases have a lower Omega-3 Index than healthy controls.

In Japan, where there is a high intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and a low risk of heart

Many mouthwashes leave stains on teeth. Because most people don’t realise this, they get themselves into a vicious cycle of using more mouthwash to try to shift the stain, unknowingly making the problem worse.

Mouthwash manufacturers will have us believe that their products are a cure-all for every possible oral health condition.

But as we know, if it’s too good to be true…it probably isn’t!

The formula for good oral health is simple - a healthy, very low sugar diet; avoid smoking; brush and floss effectively, and see your dentist or hygienist for regular maintenance. If you do all this, your chances of tooth decay and gum disease will be low…without the need to buy and use mouthwash.

The important point with this test is that we can also measure the effect that increasing the intake of essential fatty acids has on your own personal Omega-3 levels and therefore the risk of developing the associated diseases. We can now know if you are getting enough.

With over $27,000 in prizes, the annual Hunters Hill Art Exhibition attracts both emerging and established artists.

A constant feature on the Sydney Art calendar since 1955, the exhibition bringing together a diverse array of artists and styles and features an extensive selection of original Australian artworks.

Over 350 finalists are meticulously curated across three historic venues, including the Hunters Hill Town Hall, Vienna Cottage and Hunters Hill Congregational Church.

Choosing a hearing centre to get a hearing test and hearing aids is often a confusing affair.

The ACCC recently reported on hearing centres and chains that are owned by manufacturers, where clinicians work on commissions and try and push the most expensive hearing aids. Some clients were charged up to $15,000 for a pair of hearing aids!

Some hearing centres also only fit one brand and limit the choices that are available to clients.

The very elderly were seen as particularly vulnerable.

Are you confused about all the food options on offer? Every single lifestyle choice is at our fingertips. There’s literally nothing that you can’t buy, make or order. By Liz Foster However, as someone with several food intolerances I do find the whole business of shopping and meal preparation bewildering at best. Constant cross-referencing of ingredient lists, all mysteriously printed in illegible 4-point light grey font, renders every trip to the shops impossible without super-strength eye glasses.

Once I’ve worked out what’s in the packet, I’m only slightly better informed.

Claims such as ‘organic’, ‘free range’ or ‘sustainably sourced’ really don’t mean a thing unless you’re prepared to spend hours researching the ingredient progenies on your phone (see earlier glasses reference).

Everyone’s got their food thing, but mine is due to my digestion not behaving as it should rather than conscious choice.

I’m allergic to the protein in chicken’s eggs, but can eat quails’ eggs. They’re tiny and come packed in plastic cartons, which

don’t seem as friendly to the planet as the recycled cardboard ones. Plus they’re not easy to find, creating the fresh dilemma of increased emissions when I’m forced to drive all over town to source them. Not to mention the added layer of guilt when I forget my recyclable bags.

Then there’s dairy substitutes. After years retraining my taste buds I’ve finally found a combo of milks and yoghurts that’s actually tasty and sustainably sourced, and doesn’t turn to Clag overnight. Tick. But then I found out pre-made coconut yoghurt contains some other nasty we should all be avoiding. So you should make your own. I tried that for a while, just by adding chia seeds to a tin of coconut milk. But my naturopath told me to avoid using tinned coconut milk.

Apparently its plastic lining absorbs the fat and then gets reabsorbed back into the milk. Another no-no.

seemed a no-brainer until I was informed I needed to pre-soak the kale. It turned into a thick green rotted-smelling sludge, but at least my smoothie was chemicalfree.

Seeds and nuts are a great protein substitute when you don’t do dairy, but it turns out mine aren’t activated. Oops.

The mental image of a cartoon cashew doing push-ups springs to mind.

The only safe thing seems to be to farm my own coconuts, kale and quails.

I’d have to send my dog away lest he eat the quails, tramples the kale and fertilises the palm tree in his own way, but at least my carbon footprint would improve.

New office brings new activities Where is the year going? April already! We feel like we’ve been in our new office forever, but in reality it’s only a month.

1 Pottery Lane is turning out to be a very popular place – with many new visitors being enticed in on their way to the pool (or on their way from the pool).

We put together some March diary dates full of new and different things for people to try and we have been blown away by their success. We had two mornings where we hosted a mindfulness meditation session and all were left calm and reenergised by the experience. It is something we plan to arrange as a regular event.

African drumming was also a ‘hit’ with people getting moved and excited by the rhythms and the great feeling of being part of a group making music together – the whole office was moving to the beat.

We were also treated to amazing Indian Dancing from Hunar e Punjab, (Talent of Punjab); food from the East, and a specialist henna decorator who left us all with beautiful orange designs on our arms and hands.

Our final event was launching our new regular sport of Shuffleboard. We were delighted to be introduced to both the fun and the rules by Australian Shuffleboard's promoter and League legend Steve Mortimer. Please come along and see what all the fuss is about – it’s quite addictive and can be played by all ages and abilities.

Our discussions with Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services are going well and we hope to be able to announce our plans and new opportunities in the next month or so.

In the meantime, please feel free to pop in and see us. We’re on the ground floor above Little Street carpark, or you can find us by using the lift in the small shopping mall opposite Vinnies.

Rocking the boat with

music cruises There’s plenty of options if you’d like a cruise where the entertainment will rock you ‘til the wee small hours…

Are you a cruiser? Or not yet? We are nearly at the end of ‘wave season’ in Sydney and I always feel the harbour looks so much sorrier without the constant parade of gorgeous ships. Okay, I’m prepared to concede that not all ships are gorgeous, but the non-classic ‘ugly ducklings’ are usually stunning on the inside.

And it's what goes on inside that really counts. A ship is hardware and of course it makes a difference if the ship is new or old, tired or refurbed, spacious or a rabbit warren. However in my experience, clients are prepared to forgive shortcomings if they’ve been given the good and bad oil prior - and the crew, the food and the entertainment exceed expectations.

So it is with the Cruiseco music cruises that happen onboard Radiance of the Seas each October. The ship is not one of Royal Caribbean’s most deluxe vessels, but it is extremely comfortable and fit for purpose and has quickly become a favourite among repeaters.

All because of the music.

Now those of you who haven’t cruised on a music cruise will wonder what all the fuss is about and why they are so popular. For starters, where else can you expect to eat breakfast alongside John Williamson or Troy Cassar-Daley or James Blundell? On our ‘Cruisin’ Country’ cruise, that’s where! With over 40 country artists including Gina Jeffreys, Amber Lawrence and Tania Kernaghan, these guys and gals will have you tapping your toes and bootscooting for all eight days.

Then ‘Cruise and Groove’ is just perfect for you. KC & The Sunshine Band, Boney M, Marcia Hines, Paul Young and the sensational Tina Turner Show featuring Rebecca O’Connor will have

you cruising back. Singalongs allowed!

For hardcore rockers, we have Jon Stevens and Angry Anderson, Status Quo, Baby Animals and The Radiators ready to hammer your eardrums on our ‘Rock the Boat’ cruise. I’m not sure you’ll see these acts at breakfast… they’re more likely to be beside the pool at lunchtime wearing dark glasses, as will be the passengers destined to rock the night away.

Myself, I’m more of a classical girl, so I fancy our ‘Bravo! Cruise of the Performing Arts’ sailing. Barbara in our Lane Cove office has done this and swears it is magic. In 2017, Jose Carreras will headline a superb cast of artists including David Hobson and Marina Prior, Guy Noble, the Cellists of TMO, the Femme Fatales and Emma Pask. You may only recognise a few of these performers now, but join the cruise, hosted by the inimitable Ray Martin, and you’ll be agog at the talent we’ve amassed.

One of the most charming aspects of this cruise is the choir, comprising volunteers from among the passengers who will do anything to get up on a stage to perform. Jonathan Welch, famous for his work with the Choir of Hard Knocks, tells the story of how some who missed out in the original audition formed their own choir, practised their hearts out and then demanded a place in the programme. He was seriously impressed and a good time was had by all.

However the cruise I’m saving myself

for is the ‘ELVIS Meets the Legends’ cruise that is happening in 2018. OMG, this is going to be serious fun. Better than anything! We’ve got the six best ETA’s (that stands for ‘Elvis Tribute Artist’ not ‘Estimated Time of Arrival’) from Vegas, together with Scott ‘Buddy’ Cameron, Johnny Cash The Concert, The Roy Orbison Show, plus over 25 rock ‘n roll bands! WOW. The ‘parties’ are fabulous. There will be the ‘Viva Las Vegas Glitz & Glamour’ theme party and a ‘Blue Hawaii Luau’ theme party. Seal your union with another kiss at the ‘Vegas Renewal of Vows’ ceremony and sing the hymns with gusto at ‘Elvis the Gospel Years’ concert.

Fancy yourself as an up and coming Elvis? Then how about entering the ‘Young Elvis’ Rising Star concert, or the Elvis and Priscilla look-a-like contests! There will be Elvis trivia for true diehards, and an Elvis cooking show (fried chicken anyone?). If it’s all too much, then chill at the Elvis poolside movie cinema. And just when you thought it was over, make sure you are captured in the Elvis ‘Super-Fans’ group photo.

Now who said that cruises were for the nearly dead or newly wed? Not on these cruises, where the entertainment will rock you ‘til the wee hours.

Keeping a Happy Budgie Healthy budgies usually have a life span of 6-10 years. Like cats and dogs, they should have an annual health check once a year, need a proper balanced diet together with clean and appropriate housing.

So how can you keep your budgie happy and healthy?

Housing Generally the larger the cage, the happier the bird. An absolute minimum size would be 30 x 30 x 60cm for one bird. Cages that are longer than higher are preferable, so the bird can exercise within the cage. The width of the bars should be no wider than 0.5 inches to avoid the head getting stuck.

Many cages come with perches that are too small. This causes the foot to wrap around the perch leading to arthritis in the long term. It is preferable to find natural wood perches that are wide enough so that the majority of the foot can sit on top. Never use sandpaper on perches or on the floor of the cage as this can cause painful skin problems. It is also not a substitute for nail trimming.

Square shaped cages feel more secure for your budgie than round ones. It should be above ground level with a tray to catch the droppings and needs to be cleaned every 3-4 days with hot, soapy water.

Cages should be made from stainless steel or BHP polymer covered wire to avoid heavy metal poisoning, which is very common. Also avoid placing metallic objects inside.

A water feeder and either a water bowl or enclosed water bath allows the budgie to drink and bathe. Some budgies prefer to be sprayed with a mist of water.

NATIVE TO AUSTRALIA, BUDGERIGARS CAN MAKE GREAT PETS. At nighttime, cover the cage if it is located in a place that is likely to drop in temperature. This also encourages your budgie to settle down for the night.

Diet A well-balanced diet helps to avoid health problems and should include pellets, vegetables, sprouts and seeds. It is vital that your budgie is not fed just one type of seed. Seed mixes marketed for budgies are not balanced and complete.

Bird pellets or crumble should be available ad lib together with a selection of fresh vegetables daily, with a small amount of seed offered in the evenings.

Vegetables can include parsley, spinach, beans, alfalfa, broccoli, silverbeet, sweet potato, and baby carrots with the greenery still attached.

Gum leaves and grass can also be added. Some budgies will occasionally eat fruit, such as rockmelon and apple. Cooked rice, pasta, seeded bread and mashed potato is also suitable from

time-to-time.

If your budgie is currently fed a seed only diet, converting to pellets or crumble is time consuming.

However, it is healthier for the bird in the long term.

Always throw out the old food rather than putting fresh food on top, as mould can be dangerous for birds.

Water should be changed daily and be placed to avoid the bird’s droppings contaminating the water bowl.

Avocado, coffee and chocolate are toxic to birds so never feed these items.

There is no need to add grit to the diet of your budgie.

Entertainment In the wild, budgies forage for food for the majority of the day. When we provide easy access to food, birds can sometimes develop abnormal behaviours such as feather picking. Providing your bird with a variety of bird-safe toys such as bells, swings, chew toys, mirrors and ladders can keep their minds and bodies active and prevent boredom.

Each week change the toys to provide environmental enrichment. Be careful not to overcrowd the cage and avoid having a swing right in the middle of the cage that makes flying difficult.

Budgies shouldn't be kept in their cages all day. They need to spread their wings, so wing clipping is generally not recommended as it will affect their ability to properly exercise. Always supervise cage free time.

A solitary bird will need more attention than a pair or a group of budgies living together. This should be taken into consideration when you decide whether to get one or two budgies.

Madeleine returns from Europe to establish Bach ensemble After 16 years in Europe performing all over the globe with some of the world’s most famous ensembles, violinist Madeleine Easton is now back in Australia and has formed a dedicated Bach ensemble called Bach Akademie Australia.

Born and raised in Lane Cove, Madeleine attended Lane Cove Public School where her early musical training consisted of playing in the school orchestra under the inspiring baton of Ian Evans, who she credits with providing her with invaluable knowledge and inspiration for taking the career of a musician seriously.

Madeleine considers a Bach ensemble to be “an essential musical part of any country that takes itself seriously as a cultural entity.”

Well known for being one of the most prolific composers of all time, there is more than enough repertoire to explore for many life times, let alone just one.

Bach Akademie Australia’s raison d’etre is to create a natural extension of Madeleine’s work over the last 16 years in Europe. During this time, she worked

   

closely with some of the world's greatest Bach exponents such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner from whom she has learnt and absorbed an enormous amount.

“The very name itself, ‘Bach Akademie’, is intended to resemble as European an ensemble as possible, thereby bringing the great musical tradition of Europe to Australia,” says Madeleine. “It is an ensemble of the highest standard designed to put Australia on the map as a place of excellence in the performance of J.S Bach.”

Close links are being forged with academic institutions around Australia to establish an atmosphere of learning and education around the ensemble. Every international soloist performing with the Akademie shall give masterclasses, individual lessons and lectures to impart their learning and performance skills whilst here.

Madeleine is extremely fortunate to have the support of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who is the patron of Bach Akademie Australia.

Bach Akademie Australia launches their 2017 concert season in April with a program of three wonderful cantatas and the magnificent Oboe and Violin concerto featuring Madeleine Easton herself.

The case of the icon misnomer In this uneasy time of 'post truth' and 'alternative facts', there are many daily events and media generated opinions that are testing our capacity to make judgments, creating uncertainty about what to believe - what is real, what is perhaps a 'little white lie', and what is just plain wrong.

The fabric of our society is being bombarded by information overload, and tested by an excess of disproportional influence by loud minorities with vested interests in questionable outcomes – and I expect that some readers might label me in that category!

Recently the fabric of the so-called Lloyd Rees Bandstand in Lane Cove Plaza was in need of repair, and questions were asked by In The Cove about its heritage status based on facts that need to be clarified or questioned.

'The Lloyd Rees Bandstand or Rotunda is a Lane Cove icon. You may or may not be aware that the heritage status and location with the Lane Cove Plaza has been hotly debated over the years. This leads to the question – why is the bandstand not on the Lane Cove Heritage List?

In 2008 there was an outcry when the bandstand was not included in the Lane Cove Plaza redevelopment plans. In 2009 the Lane Cove Council tabled a Heritage Report prepared by Dickson Rothschild Heritage Report (May 2009) which noted that the bandstand is regarded as historically, aesthetically and socially significant for Lane Cove.'

'If you describe something or someone as an icon, you mean (that it or) they are important as a symbol of a particular thing' (Collins Dictionary definition).

The late Lloyd Rees is an iconic figure of Australian art who made a financial contribution towards a water feature to be part of the original Lane Cove Plaza plans designed by the late Harry Howard, an iconic landscape architect. His intention was for this to be created by the late Robert Woodward, an iconic Australian sculptor who designed many splendid water features (El Alamein fountain and Darling Harbour spiral among them).

Unfortunately the Council of the day canned the idea as a public safety risk and so the Lloyd Rees funds were redirected to the Harry Howard conceived 'bandstand' (with some design input from another local architect).

Lloyd Rees Bandstand has, I believe, received the iconic label by default. Many in the Lane Cove community (myself included) regard this structure as more of a carbuncle than icon! The bandstand is significantly altered from its original concept, has very poor acoustic qualities, has dated and clunky construction

details with fragile fabric, and has been unfortunately raised by some to what many would see as an undeserving status of heritage significance.

The time has come, approaching the 50th anniversary of Lane Cove Plaza in 2023, to replace the dated and languishing bandstand. A new ‘iconic’ performance structure should incorporate updated technology and materials in a form that is less demanding of maintenance, is more complementary to the current Lane Cove Plaza context and performance needs, and more visually appealing - and perhaps better suited for occasional kids’ play that happens in the predominant periods between events.

I am confident that Lloyd Rees would be very supportive of having his name and legacy realigned with such an iconic gesture, and would expect that there are many readers who would agree.

What’s the story behind your favourite recipe?

A new initiative from FoodFaith, who manages the community garden in Hughes Park, aims to celebrate cultural and faith diversity through gathering and sharing special recipes and their stories.

This month another two Lane Cove locals - Lincoln Gomes and Carol Selva Rajah - share a recipe with TVO readers and describe what it means to them.

These recipes will also be included as part of FoodFaith’s initiative called Recipes: Re-discovering Our Roots and will be posted on its website at www.foodfaith.com.au So why not get inspired and try out a new recipe from a different faith and culture in April!

Bread and butter pudding INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

550ml of room temperature full cream milk ½ cup of sugar 3 eggs ½ cup sultanas, soaked in very hot water for 30 minutes 1 ½ tsp vanilla essence 2 slices wholemeal or white bread, buttered on both sides 2 tbsp whole fruit strawberry jam ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp cinnamon

METHOD

Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees. Mix milk, sugar and eggs with a beater and add vanilla essence. Butter both sides and spread jam on the top of wholemeal or white bread. Pour off the hot water from the sultanas and lay them in the bottom of a small, rectangular ovenproof dish (just large enough to accommodate the two slices of bread). Place the bread on top, cutting a corner of one piece. To the side with the missing edge, gently pour in milk and egg mixture, allowing the bread to rise above the mixture. Add nutmeg and cinnamon to the top and bake for 50 minutes, surrounding the small oven dish in a larger one filled with water, to about half way up the outside.

THE RECIPE’S ROOTS

CAROL SELVA RAJAH is a food writer and Asian chef who has been educating Australians for two decades through her cookbooks, school and courses.

“When I was a kid, we used to eat this pudding at most family gatherings, but I didn't learn to cook it until after my Grandmother had passed away.

“Growing up, my Grandmother would cook most things from scratch, the old fashioned way. From memory, we only ate it on special occasions.

“The taste is hard to describe, since it's meshed with old memories and other smells that I recall when I eat it, but suffice to say, if you gave it to me in a blind tasting, I'd be able to tell which was my Grandmother's.”

METHOD

Blanch cubed meat in boiling water to remove the strong meaty flavours. Drain well, then rub with some soy sauce. Heat oil, sauté garlic and black bean paste until aromatic. Add pork ribs and fry on medium heat until golden brown - do not allow meat to stick to the pot. Add stock and cook for at least 20 minutes on low heat.

Add soy sauce, chilli paste, ginger, star anise, wine vinegar and stock. Cook on medium heat to simmer until pork is almost falling off the bone. Add palm sugar and balance with salt and pepper and/or chilli paste and ginger and sugar.

The meat can be reduced down to a thick flavourful dish. It should taste hot, sweet, sour and salty.Serve hot with steamed white rice and crisp slices of cucumber.

THE RECIPE’S ROOTS

"I learnt this recipe from my Chinese nanny who cooked for the household. She brought the recipe from China, but her version was simply cooked in water - no chilli and not cooked for as long. Once in Malaysia, the nanny started using Malaysian ingredients like chilli and wine vinegar with a clearer oil and better meat.

This dish is cooked at Chinese New Year and for altar worship of the people long gone. If there is a family altar, a tiny dish of the pork is also added so the Gods may ingest the food in spirit.

I often ate this dish with my family, especially at Chinese New Year. I am not Chinese, but in a multicultural country one is invited to each of the festivals and food is always laid out for guests. " THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 261 I APRIL 2017 I 25

Councillor Deborah Hutchens With the Easter break just around the corner, I would like to take the opportunity to wish those who are going on holidays a safe journey. For those who will be around Lane Cove, may you enjoy a restful time with family and friends, hopefully with some sunshine after such a wet and wild March.

I would like to thank those in our community who have helped during the unprecedented weather we had last month. In particular our local emergency services and their volunteers - on behalf of Lane Cove, we thank you.

ANZAC Day I encourage you to join us on Tuesday 25 April at the ANZAC Day Service hosted by Council and the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch. Please arrive by 7:25am for a 7:30am start. Those members of the community who would like to participate in a short march at the beginning of the ceremony are asked to congregate in Birdwood Lane by 7:10am. The service will conclude around 8:30am.

Neighbour Day Congratulations to the community groups involved in putting together a fantastic Neighbour Day event at Hughes Park last month. Lane Cove Community Chaplaincy, the Rotary Club of Lane Cove and Foodfaith led the way for other community-minded organisations to put on a free event for the local community. We are fortunate to have such an active group of organisations supporting the Lane Cove community.

refurbished playground and garden plots. Council contributed towards the newly established garden plots through a Sustainability Small Grant. Recent Mobile Office in Lane Cove - Recently I brought my mobile office to Lane Cove Plaza on what seemed to be a rare sunny day to speak with residents about local matters that are important to them. I enjoyed some great discussions on issues ranging from the importance of energy security to the need for better local infrastructure, particularly parking.

My mobile office is designed to make it easier for residents to raise issues and ideas with me when I am not in Canberra. If you see me out and about, don't hesitate to get something off your chest.

Are you a local sporting champion? - The Government is pleased to be able to support local sporting champions who are required to travel to compete. There are grants of $500 available for participants between the ages of 12 and 18 who are required to travel more than 125km to participate in a number of relevant state and national championships.

The next round of applications opened on March 1st and will close on June 30th. I would encourage our fantastic local sporting participants to visit www.ausport.gov.au/ participating/local_sporting_champions to find out if you are eligible.

Celebrating our ANZAC Heroes - April 25 will see us taking a moment to honour the sacrifice made by so many in the defence of our country. This year we continue the commemoration of the Centenary of ANZAC and I encourage you to attend one of the many ANZAC Day services that will be taking place throughout our local area, including the ceremony being held in Lane Cove.

You may not know, but the Federal Government is able to provide recognition of service certificates for those who have served in the defence force. These are issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you have a family member that you believe deserves recognition, I would encourage you to contact my office so that the appropriate arrangements can be made.

Make sure you’re ready for school holidays - It’s approaching that time again where the family packs up the car and heads off somewhere for a great escape – at least for a short time! If you’re going on a driving holiday, make sure you remember to stop, revive, survive. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas, you may want to take advantage of the Smart Traveller services provided by the Federal Government.

The website at www.smarttraveller.gov.au is a great resource for travellers, with advice for each country on how to make sure you have a fantastic trip. You can also register your travels, which helps the Government help you should any problems arise.

Happy Easter to all - Finally, I hope that you and your family have a safe, peaceful and chocolate-filled (in moderation) Easter break. The holiday means many things to many people, and I encourage you to celebrate with your friends and family.

As the Member for Lane Cove, I am proud to nominate Jacky Barker as my local ‘Woman of the Year’ for 2017.

Jacky is a standout, fun lady - a real character. In a packed yet evolving life, this woman has Anthony Roberts with ‘In the been a property legal manager, Cove’ founder Jacky Barker, at professional support manager, the NSW Women of the Year Awards held in March. director and social media consultant. She has not only mastered social media, she has nailed it. Jacky Barker describes herself as a "mysterious person" but one who is "always up for a chat".

She has combined her love of a chat and her mastery of social media through her social blog In the Cove. For me, it is compulsory reading. If someone has an idea, Jacky puts it before the community through In the Cove. If the power has gone down or there is too much noise, Jacky is on the case. I could probably add historian to her admirable achievements because, through her blogging, Jacky produces a modern-day slant on the history of Lane Cove today.

Jacky's passion for her community is reflected in every post.

She uses her digital noticeboard to promote a neighbourly conversation on all things Lane Cove. Local community organisations can advertise their events, free of charge. Jacky will first investigate, and then inform Lane Cove residents on issues that impact their day to day lives. Through In the Cove, she encourages people to be local, shop local, eat out local and drink local.

Then there is the incredible community work that Jacky achieves through her blog. For example, Jacky uses In the Cove to work with the Delvena Women's Refuge to assist them in sourcing donations.

Jacky has raised funds for Delvena, as well as Lane Cove & North Side Community Services. She has undertaken a road safety campaign and advocated for better signage at wellknown dangerous intersections. I have had the opportunity to confront the Transport Minister with issues about buses in Lane Cove, thanks to Jacky. She has assisted me in helping to create more bus services and I am sure we will continue this work.

Jacky has raised awareness of recycling options and helps promote the good work of the Lane Cove Bushland Society.

She regularly reunites owners with their lost pets. Numerous small business start-ups in Lane Cove have welcomed the free promotion Jacky has facilitated.

I would suggest that someone could learn more about Lane Cove from Jacky than from just about any other source.

To quote her - with some acknowledgement to television's Maxwell Smart - "Use your information for good and not evil".

As the local member who has served my community for nearly 20 years, I thank God that Jacky Barker lives and breathes Lane Cove.

I am very proud to have nominated Jacky Barker as my local Woman of the Year for 2017.

LCWPS students were recently treated to an Opera Australia performance ‘El Kid’.

Three goats have to cross a bridge to get to the fiesta, but there is a hungry French troll with his own show called My Kitchen Reeks! blocking their way. Only a magic trick performed by the youngest goat, involving an orange, can bamboozle the troll and save their skins.

This was the storyline of an opera performed for LCWPS students. Opera Australia has been sending opera singers and musicians into schools for the last 20 years to foster a love of the performing arts in children.

The operas are designed to be very accessible and are performed in English. The music is supplied by a talented pianist who is an integral cast member and usually last for 50 minutes, with an opportunity to ask questions at the end. In previous years we have seen amazing productions of The Magic Flute by Mozart and Cinderella by Rossini.

El Kid is a new show set to the passionate music of Bizet’s opera Carmen. The four performers use a specially designed set, props and colourful costumes to showcase this special art form, which incorporates music, singing and drama. The children were drawn into another world visually, aurally and emotionally to experience the human voice as an incredibly powerful instrument.

Prior to the shows, performing arts teachers familiarised the students with the music and conventions of opera, along with the history of this complex performing art form. After seeing the show, the students understood that El Kid is also about developing self-respect and courage as we grow up, so we can overcome the obstacles of life.

Introducing primary school aged children to the performing arts is a vital part of the curriculum, where they explore and gain skills, whilst developing an understanding of the importance of the arts as a form of personal and cultural communication.

Opera Australia invests time and money into developing entertaining new versions of such classics. They give the next generation the opportunity to enjoy the drama, creativity and delight of a professional artistic experience with fine young operatic singers performing close up!

The secret behind a good portrait For their first meeting of the year, Lane Cove Art Society members were lucky to have renowned portraitist Ann Cape as their guest artist. Ann is winner of many awards, including the People’s Choice at the Portia Geach Prize.

In her presentation, Ann spoke about the structure of the head in preparation for drawing and painting a portrait, with a brief look into her development as an artist.

Although her mother was a graduate from the National Art School in Sydney, Ann’s father was of the opinion that she should have “a good steady job”. As a result she took on secretarial work before travelling to London to work and expand her interest in the visual arts in her spare time.

In the 70's, Ann went to the National Art School, where she was in contact with many different and varied artists and built up a network of like-minded friends and associates. Around this time she met and married her husband Bill and over time had four children.

Ann’s daughter Sophie, has now become a full-time artist. Sophie graduated from the National Art School, as her mother and grandmother had done before her.

Together Ann and Sophie recently held a combined exhibition at the Mosman Art Gallery in which they movingly depicted their personal experience of Alzheimer's disease, with which Ann's husband Bill is now struggling.

In Ann’s demonstration she explained that together with the aid of 30 I THE VILLAGE OBSERVER I NO. 261 I APRIL 2017

her model skull, a good knowledge of the skeletal and muscular structure of the head will help in producing a far more realistic portrait. Once the artist has established a well-drawn base, finding the different planes on the face will establish where to place the lights and darks so as to produce a threedimensional artwork.

Ann demonstrated the differences in technique when drawing a model front on, in profile, or with the head tilted at different angles, all of which will help an artist to produce a superior portrait.

At this point Ann started to draw a portrait of Paul McCarthy with willow charcoal and an eraser on smooth paper. Ann's first step was to loosely draw in the shape of the head and shoulders and establish the centre line, the angle of the eyes in the orbit and the placement of the nose, mouth and ears. After plotting in, Ann uses her charcoal to produce the darks across the facial features before using the end of her charcoal to draw in the prominent facial features with a variety of different strokes, all the while softening with her fingers to blend and accentuate the tone and the effects of lights and darks.

To finish off the portrait, Ann took out some lights with an eraser and put in some stronger charcoal lines. In a mere 40 minutes Ann had produced a masterly portrait.

Now in its 52nd year, the Lane Cove Art Society is showcasing the best of local art with its coming artXtra! exhibition, with works ranging from traditional to contemporary and in all mediums.

Closing date is fast approaching and the cut-off date for entry forms is April 13th. Total prize money on offer is $4,800 and member artists may enter up to four works.

Opening Night is Friday 5th May from 6pm at Gallery Lane Cove.

The exhibition will run from Saturday 6th - 13th May, 10am 4.30pm daily with early closing 4pm on Saturday 13th May. Well-known artist Susie Devonport, FRAS, will be judging the entries. The main prizes – the Lloyd Rees Prize and the Guy Warren Prize, each worth $1,250 - will be awarded to the two most outstanding works.

A further five awards of $400 each will be presented for the best oils or acrylics; watercolours; mixed media; pastels or drawings; and artists’ prints. There will also be a small works prize of $300 and a Viewers’ Choice award.

An original painting by award-winning artist John Perkins will be the raffle prize.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome to enjoy the art spectacle.

He was only 19...

Richard Henry Hallams - ‘Killed in action’ during World War One.

ne hundred years ago in April 1917, Private Richard Henry Hallams, service number 5345, was killed in action in France.

Born at Redfern in 1898, Hallams worked as a grocer. He was just nineteen when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in January 1916. Both his parents, William and Jane Hallams signed his consent form because he was under twenty-one years of age.

By 1913 the family had moved to Keighley, a house on Gordon Road (now Pacific Highway) not far from the Chatswood South Methodist Church (now Chatswood South Uniting Church). Richard attended the church and was later remembered as a Sunday school scholar.

With three and a half years previous experience as a senior cadet, Richard was initially attached to D Company, 45th Battalion and sent to training at Bathurst. He was transferred to the Liverpool camp in April 1916, joining the 14th reinforcement of the 19th Battalion. He embarked for the Western Front on HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 22 August 1916 landing at Plymouth, England in October. After further training at Folkestone, UK, he joined his battalion on the Western Front in France on 23 December 1916.

The 19th Battalion had fought in the atrocious conditions at the Battle of Flers during November 1916 and was in need of the reinforcements. During 1917 the Battalion would follow up the German forces in their retreat to the Hindenburg Line.

Private Hallams was ‘killed in action’ on 17 April, 1917. Like many men who died on the Western Front, Hallams has no known grave but his name is remembered with honour on the

His official service record notes no further information regarding his death, but the Chatswood South Methodist Church – Book of Remembrance (recently donated to Lane Cove Library Archives) records…’After service in the front line the battalion was relieved and marched

to a Rest Camp, and here Dick was killed by a long-distance shell on 17 April, 1917. Buried at Noreuil, France.’

Hallams’ name is also recorded on two local honour rolls - the Longueville (now Lane Cove) Public School Roll of Honour for the Great War, which listed local citizens as well as students, and the Lane Cove World War One Honour Roll. Originally located in the School of Arts, it has recently been restored and relocated to the foyer of the Lane Cove Council Civic Centre.

Following the war, Richard’s parents and sister Edith continued to live in the Lane Cove area. Their 1919 Sydney Morning Herald ‘In Memoriam’ notice stated Richard was ‘deeply mourned by his loving father and mother and sister’. Edith married Clifford Hopkins in 1925 and they lived in Helen Street.

Four new Lane Cove streets were constructed when the No.2 subdivision of Parklands Estate was offered for sale in September 1919. The streets were named in memory of four local lads killed in World War One. Garling, Munro and Gentle Streets along with Hallam Avenue were formed in a triangle of land between Moore Street (now Epping Road) and Centennial Avenue. The advertising of the day described the land as suitable for ‘splendid building sites’.

By 1941 Hallam Avenue, Lane Cove West had been extended westward from its original subdivision plan. A road originally named as Pasadena Avenue in the Austral Estate subdivision of 1928 and in existence during the 1930s also had its name changed to Hallam Avenue, linking it across Barwon Road to Cullen Street.

Pasadena Avenue continued to be named in some street directories in the 1950s.

MUSIC NOTES Mowbray Public School Strings and Band Ensembles commenced Term 1 on a high note as they took part in a half-day ‘Kickstart’ music camp. The students enjoyed small intensive tutorial groups to workshop new pieces that promoted rapid music progression. The ensembles then showcased their work with a wonderful performance in the School Hall.

The Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre (LCMCC) has recently relocated to 1 Pottery Lane (opposite the Lane Cove Pool). After 22 wonderful years in the old ladies bowling club at 266 Longueville Road, they have moved to a new purpose built facility.

Lane Cove Council generously provided a beautiful new space which contains six spacious, air-conditioned, acoustically treated music rehearsal rooms/studios; a small central area which can be used for small group performances and early childhood classes; kitchen; storeroom and new office spaces.

Adjoining this is the Terrace Function Room, complete with outdoor terrace and a new commercial kitchen that can be used for bigger events.

According to President Robyn Mah, these new community facilities are a credit to Council’s years of planning.

“We would like to pay tribute to Council for delivering this project to the community.

“Our 15 staff members and 180 enrollees have been busy learning about this new site, underground car parking and lifts which is a new experience compared to the humble cottage at 266 Longueville Road. As a thriving community group and with continued and support from the local community, we look forward to developing some new programs in 2017/2018.

“Recently we introduced Suzuki Early childhood classes on Wednesday and Friday mornings and a Suzuki Cello program.

Four grand pianos and six new uprights are working overtime and our 22 year long student concert series recommences next term.”

The Centre is open 7 days a week for music tuition, studio hire and rehearsals.

Consultation for Disability Inclusion Action Plan How often do people throw out stuff like cooler bags and backpacks because there is a rip or the zippers don’t work? We all know the answer is plenty of times, as these are cheap and easy to replace! The sewing team at the Repair Café rescued two such items recently.

From our volunteer Sarah: “One repair I really liked was patching a cooler bag. So many of these probably end up in landfill, so it was great to put a patch over a rip and repair the zip seam to prolong its life.”

From our volunteer Tracy: “Daisy’s backpack had come apart at the top. Since it was nylon, I could use a lighter to stop the lining fraying further and then stitch it in place.”

Council is currently seeking input from the community on its first Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), designed to identify actions to assist people with a disability to participate more fully in community life.

The plan will address four key areas that have been nominated by people with disability as being of primary importance in creating an inclusive community: • Developing positive community attitudes and behaviours • Creating liveable communities • Supporting access to meaningful employment • Improving access to services through better systems and processes

How to get involved Council is inviting people who live with disability, their carers, family members, friends and the general community to provide input into this plan by: • Participating in a community survey during March and April, where all members of the community can have their say about disability inclusion. The survey is also available in paper form at key Council facilities.

• Attending a focus group for people with disability, their carers and their families.

• Having a one-on-one conversation with consultants if you are not comfortable in a group situation or need extra support.

• Arranging or requesting a Meeting in a Box Toolkit. This is a mini consultation that can be used by groups, families or friends to run their own meeting using standardised procedures and questions.

Lane Cove History Prize The Lane Cove Historical Society is running its History Prize again in 2017.

With a $2000 winner's prize, generously supported by the Hyecorp Property Group, entries can be in essay form or as an oral history project and need to include historical research into any aspect of the history of Lane Cove and its environs.

Last year's inaugural competition gave some outstanding histories featuring local identities and localities. These essays are currently being published in a special edition of the LCHS Journal and will be archived in the Local Studies Unit of the Lane Cove Library.

Research topics could be the lives of interesting Lane Cove individuals or families; early settlers or ethnic groups who came to live in Lane Cove; the evolution of local roads and transport systems, houses or public buildings; or the histories of bush care, local churches or sporting teams.

The term 'Lane Cove and its environs' refers to the modern Municipality of Lane Cove. However in the past, 'Lane Cove' covered a much broader geographical area, including parts of modern Hunters Hill, Woolwich, North Sydney, Chatswood and suburbs north to Gordon.

Submissions that deal with a historical period in which these areas constituted 'Lane Cove' will be accepted. For instance, the first Lane Cove school, initiated by Governor Macquarie in 1816, was in Gordon, as was the Lane Cove Post Office until 1879.

Another initiative of the LCHS is the Primary Schools History Awards, which is a programme to encourage primary students in the study of history.

Local clean up unearths 410 kilos of rubbish Over 90 amazing volunteers of all ages, working in muddy and wet conditions along Stringybark Creek Reserve in Lane Cove North, retrieved an incredible 49 bags of rubbish and recycling.

The Clean up Australia Day event was hosted by Stringybark Creek Residents Association and supported

by Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group. Although the area looked relatively clean to a casual observer, 775 bottles and cans were collected, 15kg of broken glass, 140 coffee cup lids plus hundreds of plastic bags.

This was a wonderful community action, but why do we need to do this? Hopefully the long-awaited container deposit scheme and a ban on single-use plastic bags will help. The new local recycling facility is also a welcome addition to the recycling options in our area.

KeepCup stall Our recent stall in Lane Cove Plaza was a huge success. The growing awareness of the Responsible Cafes campaign (encouraging reusable coffee cups through discounts at participating cafes) and the huge number of reusable KeepCup purchases was really encouraging. Another stall with new stock will be held in April for those who missed us last time.

Getting Rid Of Your Old Mattress?

Don’t lose sleep: Booked mattress collections are recycled Each year in Australia over 1.6 million mattresses end up in landfill and here in Lane Cove they are one of the most common items to be illegally dumped.

Did you know that a mattress is made up of six different materials including steel, quilting, foam, timber, textiles and husk?

This combination of materials leads to difficulties in landfill as some items take longer to break down than others. This is further complicated by how bulky mattresses are.

Lane Cove residents can help reduce the number of mattresses ending up in landfill by letting Council know that you have a mattress when you book your Household Clean Up.

Council can then make sure your mattress doesn’t go to landfill. Instead, up to 90% of materials can be recovered and made into various steel products and carpet underlay.

LCNSC gets on board with ‘Shuffleboard’ With a history that goes back over 500 years, shuffleboard has been described as a quicker and more exciting version of bowls, played on an indoor table.

Favourites for the upcoming championship is Sydney Sailmakers - both Nick Press and Andrew Hay started their sailing in Sabots at Lane Cove Club.

The game is enormously popular with senior citizens, and is installed in over 100 retirement villages throughout NSW alone.

Lane Cove & North Side Community Services, which recently moved into its new premises in Pottery Lane, has also installed a new shuffleboard that is already proving popular.

Shuffleboard involves pushing a puck down the table with the objective of landing it on the highest scoring number at the far end of the table.

Over 30 people attended the launch of the new LCNSCS shuffleboard at the end of March. Steve Mortimer, Managing Director of Australian Shuffleboard and former CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs legend, gave tutorials on how to play the game before attendees split into teams to play against each other.

The Men’s Cooking Group then prepared a noodle box lunch for attendees.

“This is a game that anyone can play, regardless of age or ability. Even if you’re on crutches you can still hold a puck in one hand,” Steve said.

“Competition and interaction are healthy, no matter how old you are. Shuffleboard involves competing, brings out self esteem and helps you to meet new people and make new friends.”

LCNSCS is hoping to establish a weekly shuffleboard competition and invites anyone interested to contact them.

Visitors and spectators are welcome at the clubhouse located at Longueville Wharf, Stuart Street, Longueville both before and after racing. Races start at 2pm on Friday and Monday and 1.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Food and drinks and a program will be available from the club canteen.

LCSAG offers assistance with e-Waste The Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group (LCSAG) is offering assistance to residents who are unable to take their e-waste to the free collection point at St Ignatius College on Saturday 22 April.

Lane Cove residents without transport or who are unable to lift their e-waste into their vehicle can contact LCSAG on 0413 606 366. Members of LCSAG will then collect the items for delivery to the collection point. Please ring prior to April 22 to arrange.

SAFETY FOR SENIORS PROGRAM AND SECURITY IMPROVEMENT SCHEME The Safety for Seniors Program and Security Improvement Scheme are designed to assist seniors feel and be more connected to the community and to be safer in their own homes.

Lane Cove Council runs both the program and scheme in conjunction with Lane Cove & North Side Community Services.

Safety for Seniors Program:

This free program supports the more vulnerable and isolated seniors within our community.

It offers the opportunity to:

● connect with a friendly volunteer by phone at least once a month for a chat; ● receive a free Crime Prevention through Environmental Design checklist to help identify areas on property that could improve safety;

● receive updates about crime prevention ideas and things to do; ● receive a copy of the seniors newsletter, the Lane Cove Connection; ● join the Next of Kin program with the NSW Police Force; ● receive invitations to talks and safety programs.

Eligibility

This program is for people who: ● live alone or with a fully dependent spouse; ● have no or minimal contact with family; ● feel socially isolated from the community; ● are aged 65+; ● want to receive a monthly phone call from a Lane Cove & North Side Community Services volunteer.

Security Improvement Scheme:

Funding for this scheme is available twice a year, in the months of April and November. It will contribute a maximum of $100 towards the cost of purchasing and installing low cost measures to increase the safety of older people.

This can include items such as:

● a key lock box so that people who are given the code can have access to the premises in an emergency; ● fluorescent or reflective house numbers to help locate the house at night in case of emergency; ● a door viewer so the resident can see who is at the front door; ● smoke detectors; ● a key chain for the front door; ● sensor lights; ● timber dowel window chocks.

The impact of separation on children Many parents involved in a divorce or separation worry about its impact on their children. Have they done the right thing? How can they best help their children?

In most cases, they need not worry so much.

In fact, experts tend to agree it is a myth that children are necessarily better off if their parents stay together.

Although divorce is stressful, research indicates the great majority of children from divorced families are emotionally well adjusted. Following a separation, children tend to be resilient and resourceful; about 80% of children from separating families do adjust well.

However, it is the degree of conflict in the family, and the extent that the

children are drawn into any conflict, that makes all the difference. Children from divorced, but conflict-free homes, do significantly better than children remaining in conflicted marriages. If parents keep their negative thoughts and conflicts to themselves, and don’t involve their children in their disputes, their children are less impacted. The essential factor is the parents’ ability to separate

their ‘couple’ role from their ‘parental’ role.

Of course, separation can be stressful for parents as well as children. Major disruptions to their housing and locality and loss of living standards can affect them. About 20% of children of divorce do fare significantly worse than other children when it comes to things like educational results, future employment, and the likelihood of psychological problems like depression.

But children of separation can be protected from these things to a large extent. If at least one (and preferably both) parents provide good quality, ongoing family relationships and demonstrate authoritative, loving and appropriate parenting and provide for their children’s expenses, the children will tend to thrive.

Experts also generally agree that, following a separation, fathers are just as important as mothers. Children with close relationships with their fathers do significantly better after a divorce than children who don’t when it comes to things like higher academic achievement, self-esteem and a host of other positive

factors. However, mothers are often the gatekeepers of their children’s relationships with their father. So it’s in children’s interests for mothers to use this responsibility wisely, supporting and encouraging the child’s relationship with the father. There are exceptions where it is necessary, and in a child’s best interests, to greatly restrict or even terminate a parent’s involvement with their child, for reasons of the child’s safety or if there is a serious parenting incapacity. But such cases are in the minority.

Children of joint shared parenting arrangements, and arrangements where the children spend substantial time with each parent, do significantly better than children who don’t often see the other parent. It’s also what the majority of children want. But the success of joint parenting arrangements depends upon an absence of major conflict.

If both parents avoid conflict with each other and focus on the needs of the children, then a successful outcome for the children is likely.

Lane Cove West FC seeks recruits LCFC celebrated a win over Blue Mountains FC in the Westfield FFA Cup played in March.

Lane Cove FC breaks drought in FFA Cup In just its second year in the Westfield FFA Cup, Lane Cove broke its drought with a win over Blue Mountains FC. A goal in each half from Jamie Morriss, with his trusty left foot, ensured a reasonably comfortable 2-0 passage into the fourth round. For a side that has basically been re-built in the last couple of months under new coach Jason Barnes, this was an encouraging start to the season.

A crowd of around 200 was there to enjoy the atmosphere generated by this national knockout cup, which now features over 600 clubs from around Australia.

The next round to be played at Blackman Park will be on either Tuesday 4th April or Thursday 6th April (see www.lcfc.com.au) and will be played against the winner of Albion Park White Eagles from the Wollongong Association or Peakhurst United from the St George Association.

The Club is hoping another good crowd will be there to cheer the team on.

Lane Cove West Football Club is a small football (soccer) team that has been playing in the area for over 40 years.

They are currently looking for recruits for their All Age and O35s teams. The O35s having been promoted to Division 1 this season. Goalkeepers are in demand for all teams.

With teams in Men’s All Age Division 5 and in Men’s O35s and O45s divisions of the Northern Suburbs Football Association leagues, games are mostly played on Saturday afternoons.

The season kicks off on Saturday 31st March and training takes place on Wednesday evenings.

If anyone is interested in becoming a referee, the club can arrange for attendance at a training course. Referees are paid $60 a game - it’s tax free!

In January, 9-year old Elin Ladmore attended the Cuboree at Cataract Scout Park.

Elin wanted to share her great adventures with the public and the following is part of her diary.

The Cuboree Day 1: Going to the Cuboree was a hard moment for me and some other cubs because we didn’t want to leave our family behind.

This was going to be a hard time for me. I had actually never been away from my family for this long. EVER. As soon as we arrived I started cheering up because the scout park looked amazing with all the gateways. My gateway for pack B506 was a Medusa head. The theme was Myths And Legends.

It was really awesome! My pack went for a walk about the camp.

When we got back we had some dinner and then we went to the opening ceremony. It was a very long walk from our camp to the jaw-droppingly awesome stage. It was really funny and I enjoyed it a lot. When we got back we had some hot milo and some tasty biscuits. Then we all went to bed.

Day 2: I woke up and immediately started getting ready for the tent inspection. Today’s activities were Celtic and Living the Dreaming. Celtic is Irish and Living the Dreaming is Aboriginal. At Celtic we did archery and this weird bubble fighting thingy. Then after lunch

we went to Living the Dreaming. I threw sponges at my mates and then they threw them at me!

Then I made a cuboree thingy, a rainmaker and a sandpaper drawing. Then we did the bungee cord and tried to jump off. When we finished we went back to the camp and got out our bags for the showers.

Day 3: Today’s activities were Greek Mythology and Avalon (medieval times). At Avalon we watched a circus and then they taught us their tricks. First it was plate-spinning. NAILED IT. Then it was juggling. UH OH. After that we had tennis balls in stockings and swung them around in a cool way. Then we did some ‘horse training’ and other stuff like an obstacle course and shooting stuff.

Day 4: Today’s activities were Aztec Mountain and Viking. We did some rock climbing and then went down a MASSIVE zipline!! I screamed my head off because I have a fear of 1ST LANE COVE SCOUT GROUP

heights! We also went cave exploring. After lunch we went to Viking where I got really muddy and did lots of climbing.

After that it was our turn on the rapids.

Day 5: Today we had to wake up early to get ready to leave. Our coach left at 7.30am. On the coach, I could NOT wait to get back and see my mum and dad!! When we arrived, I ran out of the coach and gave my mum a big hug. Then I got a little present from my leaders. It was a silver camping cup with the cuboree sign engraved on it.

Autumn Plant Sale

It’s time for another Huge Plant Sale raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

When: 10am to 3pm, Sunday 9th April Where: 45 Parklands Avenue, Lane Cove North Keith and Maureene have been busy propagating beautiful plants.
