‘Park this plan’ plea P

roposals for street parking restrictions close to a village railway station should be put to residents at a public meeting, say parish councillors.

Responding to requests from villagers, Alvechurch Parish Council had asked the county council’s highways department to come up with a solution to the longstanding problems along Station Road, Alvechurch.

A continuous line of vehicles parked along the roadside means there is effectively only one carriageway, with few, if any, pulling-in places for through traffic, while there are particular concerns over parking on the bend at the brow of Bear Hill.

The county council has proposed a “prohibition of waiting” order at various intervals along Station Road, to apply from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, along the north-west side.

However, some parish councillors felt that this could simply move the problem to nearby roads, exacerbated by the continuing problems with the rail station car park, which is flooded for much of the year.

A public consultation is due to take place later in the year, following a statutory consultation period involving bodies such as the parish council and police, but Coun Andy

Humphries suggested that a public meeting was needed.

He told colleagues: “The county promised a proper consultation but the statutory consultation was only a four-week period, over Christmas – they’ve tried to slip it through.

“There’s no consideration of the knock-on effects for residents. High­ ways didn’t even know about the issue with the station car park; it’s a bit of a shambles. We need a public meeting to get all parishioners’ views.”

Parish chairman Marc Worrall said: “We asked county to come up with a solution; it’s not perfect but they’ve done it so they should have a degree of support. If it fails, they’ll have to

come back and fix it.” He added that county councillor Charlie Hotham, who was unable to attend the January parish council meeting, was in support of the idea.

Coun John Cypher described the plan as “the lesser of two evils”, while district councillor Annette English pointed out that most residents of Station Road had private driveways.

The councillors agreed to seek an extension to the statutory period, to allow time for discussions with Coun Hotham. Coun Worrall added: “It would be remiss of the parish council to move this forward without a full public consultation – probably a public meeting.”

Bring back ‘Rose’, says councillor District and county councillor Peter McDonald is hoping to reinstate the child-shaped bollard outside Lickey Hills Primary School after it was removed by the county.

Nicknamed”Rose Hill” by residents, the bollard was installed in spring 2017 in a bid to slow traffic and deter pavement parking outside the school, and had become something of a local landmark, occasionally dressed in various accessories by local wags.

Coun McDonald said that he had prevented the county council from removing similar bollards from other locations (the one outside St Andrew’s School in Barnt Green remains in situ at the time of writing) and was working to bring “Rose” back.

School parking menace Barnt Green Parish Council is to increase its efforts to prevent vehicles damaging the grass verges on the corner of Greenbank and Hewell Road.

There have been problems at the village centre site, where residents have reported that damage is largely caused by drivers collecting or dropping off pupils at St Andrew’s First School.

There have also been reports of verbal and physical altercations between motorists and residents who have complained about the mess and their driveways being blocked by parked cars at the beginning and end of the school day.

In a report to councillors, parish clerk Tracy Bodley said: “Attempts have been made by the parish council lengthsman to refill and reseed

Sucker schedule sought

Alvechurch Parish Council is to ask the county council for its gulley-cleaning schedule following concerns over drainage and flooding.

Coun Peter Freeman told colleagues parish roads had seen a lot of “surface water” over the autumn and winter and wondered if the drains were cleared on a regular basis.

Chairman Marc Worrall said: “This seems to be a problem throughout the parish. It’s been a long time since I saw a sucker machine.”

Coun Sue Baxter pointed out: “You only seem to see them if there ‘s a major problem – but street cleaning is done by the district, and gulley clearing is by the county.”

Interim parish clerk Gill Lungley said: “The lengthsman used to clear

the area, only for tyre tracks to reappear within hours.”

She added that the school was aware of the problem and had asked parents for more consideration.

The parish council is discussing a number of possibilities, such as

There’s also a suggestion of introducing a “walking bus” for school pupils, which would eliminate the need for parents to park close to the school and would also bring health benefits.

Lickey

& Blackwell parish councillor Bakul Kumar suggested to colleagues that the parish should increase its efforts to keep tidy, perhaps with an “Adopt a Street” litter picking scheme. He said: “We live in a nice place and we should keep it that way – if it looks like nobody cares, we could be a target for criminals.”

Barnt

Green’s controversial tiered planters in the village centre are to be planted with ‘Surfinia’ petunias to give a trailing display, councillors heard. The parish clerk will liaise with the village caretaker and ask traders to help ensure they are kept watered correctly.

Concerns

over speeding traffic in Weatheroak came to a head after a recent crash on Weatheroak Hill.

County and district councillor Charlie Hotham was due to hold a meeting with residents who want to see a lower speed limit introduced.

Plans

for 10 new houses in Hopwood were turned down by Bromsgrove’s planning inspector, but Alvechurch parish councillors fear that the developer could come back with an amended plan because the site was described as “previously developed land” rather than Green Belt.

Barnt

Green Parish Council has received notification from the county council of a “prohibition of waiting” order for Hewell Lane. This will extend parking restrictions from the junction with Fiery Hill Road and is a result of concerns over all-day parking causing safety and congestion problems.

The proposal has the support of county councillor Peter McDonald.

A lack

of confidence in the train service could be causing more people to take their cars into Birmingham, Alvechurch parish councillor John Cypher told colleagues: “Since the new timetable there have been many delays and cancellations, and there is anecdotal evidence to show that congestion on the A441 is a result of people choosing to drive instead.”

The

toposcope on the Lickey Hills could benefit from “section 106” money left over from Cofton. District councillor Richard Deeming told parish councillors that Cofton didn’t need all of the money available from the St Modwen development, so some could be spent in Lickey – but he couldn’t say how much.

Updates

on the progress of the promised lifts and other planned improvements at Barnt Green railway station have been requested by the parish council from Network Rail and West Midlands Trains.

Dale

Hill in Blackwell is to be monitored by a traffic survey, with parish councillors hopeful it will prove the need for a warning sign before the bend. Greenhill in Blackwell will also be surveyed.

Recent

heavy rain caused flooding near the junction of Twatling Road and Mearse Lane, and also on Plymouth Road and Linthurst Newtown. All were reported to the county council.

crafty cheques: After raising £2,900 during 2019, the Alvechurch Knit & Natter group was able to make donations to four charities, whose representatives were presented with cheques at the group’s December meeting. The money was raised through sales of knitted goods, a fashion show, Christmas fair and raffle. Organiser Cynthia Lawton said people had been very generous with donations for prizes.

Delay to Post Office plans The reinstatement of the chimneys at the former post office building in Alvechurch, as recommended by Bromsgrove’s Conservation Officer, has been delayed due to amendments to the planning application.

District councillor Annette English told parish colleagues that further consultation would now take place, but there were no firm timescales.

Councillors are pressing for the post box – sealed off for safety reasons during initial building work – to be reopened in the weeks before work recommences.

Meanwhile, the parish council wants to push the Post Office towards “alternative proposals” for a branch in the village.

Coun English reported that a new planning application for 14 The Square, whose owners want to open a branch of Simply Fresh and

incorporate a post office counter, seemed “a long way off”.

She said: “It seems the applicant is not learning from previous mistakes or taking on board what the Planning Officer and Conservation Officer have said previously.”

Parish chairman Marc Worrall said: “The parish council has tried hard to push the Post Office into thinking laterally, not pinning all their hopes on Simply Fresh. We need to push them to seek alternative proposals.”

Resident Clive Peters suggested the post office be housed in the library, to create a community hub.

Coun Worrall said this had been discussed in the past and was “complicated.”

He added: “The Post Office is only thinking about 14 The Square at the moment, but they will have to take on board some of our comments – there is nowhere else to turn.”

espite there being no parish council meeting in December, it was still a busy time for the elected members of the council, with plenty of business to occupy their time. u The severe weather conditions at the end of November resulted in Beoley village and the surrounding areas being badly flooded. Pressure was put on the County Council to clear gulleys and pump out blocked drains, saving many village residents from water ingress to their properties.

The lengthsman played a crucial role in stemming the flow of water from ditches in Holt Lane. u In an effort to curb the excessive speeding through Beoley and Portway, the parish council successfully persuaded the county council to impose a temporary 30mph speed limit through Portway for three months. Furthermore, councillors have instigated a Community Speed Watch scheme run by West Mercia Police.

Volunteers have already begun training, completing theoretical tests, and practical training will soon follow. u At its February meeting on the 11th of the month, the parish council will welcome the West Mercia Police Commissioner, John-Paul Campion.

Residents are invited to question the commissioner on police activity in the parish and the impending increase in police numbers. The meeting starts at 7pm and those wishing to attend should be at Beoley Village Hall for 7.15pm.

Fifty guests packed into the new club house, which will provide a social, leisure and educational centre for residents. The residents’ association committee provided visitors with wine and mince pies and the festive spirit was very evident. u Over the Christmas period, councillors were busy lobbying Bromsgrove planners over further inappropriate development by travellers in Billesley

Lane. The siting of static caravans on the Green Belt caused further concerns for local residents and the Vice Chair, Coun Joynes, persuaded enforcement officers to remind the developers of this unauthorised action, pending their Appeal to the National Planning Inspectorate. u Following a request from Coun Morgan, the parish council has asked that the county council install ‘No Through Road’ signs on Wapping Lane.

The number of motorists seeking a short cut to Redditch has resulted in significant damage to the lane and the hedgerows caused by reversing vehicles. u Finally, Beoley Parish Council would like to wish all Beoley residents a Happy New Year for 2020 and remind them that the next Council meeting will be on February 11 at 7pm in Beoley Village Hall.

Any resident of this parish is entitled to attend council meetings, as an observer. The regular agenda allows a period of time for questions from the floor but if any resident wishes to speak about a particular issue, it is always best to notify the parish clerk (07746 565969) in order that appropriate time can be set aside.

u Planning Applications in Beoley Parish continued to occupy the business of councillors and after consultation with local residents, the council makes its response. A planning application to further develop the Ravensbank Business site by the addition of another new 10,000 sq ft distribution warehouse for Utilitywise was opposed by the council. HIGHWAYS NEWS

Highways issues are always a popular discussion point at our parish council meetings. In recent meetings residents have asked about planting trees on the verges on Old Birmingham Road, Lickey. We have been informed by the County Highways Officer that unfortunately this is not possible due to the wires and pipes underneath the verges.

Residents are concerned at the slow progress of the railway crossing diversion in Blackwell. A recent communication from Network Rail confirms that they have been in contact with the Golf Club and negotiating

The new rubbish bin is now installed in the Blackwell children’s play area, ready to take all those chocolate wrappers and crisp packets. Thank you to everyone for keeping Tidy Bear well fed and keeping our park tidy, and thanks to William Buckett for naming him.

Hello, my name is Aled Luckman and I am a new councillor for Lickey and Blackwell. I am 19 years old and spent my whole life living and growing up in the parish. I attended Bromsgrove School for 16 years where I completed my A-levels and GCSEs. I am now studying law at the University of Birmingham but live at home. In my free time I row for Worcester Rowing Club and I love

with Worcestershire County Council and that things are ongoing.

Traffic congestion on Greenhill in Blackwell continues to be a problem.

The County Highways Department will be conducting a survey on Greenhill to establish the nature of problems encountered by residents.

The parish council would like to remind residents to show care and consideration when parking. We have been informed of many parking issues, especially on Linthurst Newtown in Blackwell. It is important to leave enough space for vehicles to pass, including emergency vehicles and gritters. There have been complaints that the school bus has been unable to pass on certain days.

We are writing to Coun Peter McDonald to request a 30mph limit on Monument Lane in Lickey – we will keep you informed of progress. We would urge residents to get in touch with us or our county councillors directly with any highways issues.

Traffic and other highways issues will be discussed at the parish council’s meeting on February 17 at 7.30pm at The Wheel, Blackwell.

Lounge looks for help Volunteering brings rewards for everyone, writes Bill Ulyett, chairman of trustees at The Lounge in Alvechurch.

T

he Lounge has been serving the community in Alvechurch since 2010 and over that time we have gone through many ups and downs, but we have always enjoyed continuous support from both the local community and Alvechurch Parish Council.

The charity provides the community café, which is well used and loved by residents and visitors alike, with profits supporting our other charitable events for the people of Alvechurch.

We have expanded and changed since the early days, with more emphasis on supporting the young people with the increasing challenges of life in 2020.

When we started in 2010, internet cafés were popular, but today most young people have mobile phones and social media.

These changes bring new challenges for our young people and we have adapted, too. Our focused sessions, twice weekly, regularly attract more than 20 young people, whom we support with the help of both volunteers and qualified staff.

funding, we were able to start the successful Friendship Matters programme supporting our older members with a regular weekly session to prevent difficulties associated with loneliness and isolation.

Many new friendships have been kindled and the fantastic series of activities on a Monday is drawing in new people every week to try new things and meet new friends.

In 2020 we are planning some great events to build on the success of The Lounge, but we need some more help in the management team,

Picnic to celebrate VE Day anniversary This year’s Alvechurch Picnic in the Park will take place on Saturday May 9 to coincide with the Bank Holiday weekend for the 75th anniversary of VE Day. As well as the usual line-up of fun and entertainment

volunteers who will shape and guide the future and ensure that the next ten years will be as successful for The Lounge.

If you have a few hours free in the evening once a month, and would like to join us, we would be more than happy to have a chat.

No special skills are needed; just a few hours a month to help grow and support the community and the services we offer.

Becoming a Lounge management volunteer is similar to helping a neighbour in need, with all training provided free.

The only qualification required is your desire to help and support your community.

A belated Happy New Year to all our parishioners!

The start of a new year provides an opportunity to focus on new and existing challenges for the forthcoming year. For your parish council, one of the first priorities is to recruit a new parish clerk.

As reported in last month’s Village, Tammy Williams has moved on to take up her new challenge working for The National Lottery. Councillors wish her every success in her new role.

The parish council has appointed Gill Lungley as Interim Clerk while the recruitment process takes place. Gill has been employed as Supporting Officer by the parish council over the past year so is very familiar with the council’s work and procedures. Gill is supported by Claire Mason in the parish office so in the interim period “normal service” is being maintained.

Councillors hope to have a new clerk appointed and in post by March 1.

The parish council continues to liaise closely with representatives of the Post Office on securing a new permanent home for our branch since its closure at the beginning of November last year. This has been a fluid situation involving third parties and the council hopes there will be greater clarity within the next few months.

In the meantime, the parish council is grateful for the regular Friday mobile PO services available on the car park of the Sports & Social Club in the village centre. Our thanks also go to the officers of the Club for their continued cooperation.

Policies in the Alvechurch Parish Neighbourhood Plan were instrumental in having a planning appeal for ten houses in Hopwood dismissed by the Inspector in December. The hard work put in by the council’s Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is continually paying dividends with both planning applications and appeals.

High on the parish council’s priorities list are numerous items carried over from last year. The installation of new signs at The Wiggin is planned soon, giving details of a “dog exclusion” area related to the play and gym equipment location, as well as giving other useful advice to users.

The parish council continues to work hard to promote better highway safety on the A441 through Hopwood, and especially the need for a safer pedestrian crossing on this busy road leading to J2 of the M42. The continued assistance of county and district councillor Charlie Hotham is appreciated on this subject. Slow progress is being made, but solutions and initiatives are being pursued.

These same comments apply to improvements to Alvechurch station car park. The parish council has had regular and purposeful meetings with all the main station stakeholders over the past year and some progress has been made. The county council is leading on this and representatives of the parish council are closely monitoring developments. Again, it’s hoped

council tax

It is that time of year when council tax is set by Bromsgrove District Council.

It is also when the parish council seeks to agree its precept for the forthcoming year. Analysis of services and provision of playing fields, playgrounds and community facilities throughout our parish, and the responsibilities accompanying them, compared to the precept levied over recent years, shows the parish council provides very “good value for money”.

However, in supporting worthwhile local initiatives, fixed expenditure and everyday maintenance costs has meant that reserves have had to be used to subsidise them. This is not sustainable long-term and there’s an obligation from Central Government for parish councils to hold reserves to cover a designated period.

It is with this as a background that our Finance & Resources Committee will be deciding and making a recommendation to full council on what our precept request will be, although it will still remain as a very small percentage of the council tax levied by Bromsgrove District Council.

Cleaning up the canal T

he long-awaited programme of dredging on the Worcester–Birmingham Canal around Hopwood, Alvechurch and Tardebigge took place towards the end of last year.

The base for contractors Land and Water was the space alongside the visitor moorings by Bridge 60 near the Alvechurch Boat Centre Marina.

The contractors worked hard and when the water-borne mud boats were filled and push-towed back to the land base, they were emptied into waiting wagons and transported to somewhere in the Gloucester area for use there.

The canal was particularly badly silted around the Hopwood, Bittell, Shortwood and Tardebigge areas, with the contractors removing far more than they were expecting. On at least one occasion even the empty mud boat became stuck on the bottom, such was the extent of the silt.

The canal should now be safer for boaters and also healthier for the aquatic life it supports.

Who would vote no Dear Editor – Elections can bring out the best and worse in people, not just politicians, and throw up a whole caboodle of surprises.

The General Election aside, I was delighted that the Lickey & Blackwell and Cofton Hackett Neighbourhood Development Plan 2018 to 2030 (just rolls off the tongue) was agreed in December 2019. But also staggered that more than 420 people, that’s 13 per cent of those who cast their vote, felt they couldn’t support it.

Bearing in mind that the preamble started in 2013 and there were consultations, open days, news articles, leaflets and films detailing all aspects of the NDP, why did so many decide it wasn’t for their area when the opportunity to have their say and contribute was endlessly encouraged?

Either they believed the NDP didn’t benefit them or the parishes, they didn’t know what this Referendum was all about (and I understand that many questioned the polling stations volunteers), or perhaps believed it was THE Second Brexit Referendum!

Although Bromsgrove District Council now only has to carry out a formal signing-off of the plan, as someone who played a minor role in its presentation, I’d be interested to learn the principal reasons for those errant pencilled Xs. Or, is that just democracy?

Praise for village illuminations

Dear Editor – Barnt Green village after dark is usually fairly gloomy – the street lighting being far from satisfactory – especially compared with the adjacent rail station.

So it was great to see the Christmas Illuminations go up on the shops and the park in the high street, courtesy of the parish council, I believe. Well done to them – maybe these illuminations could be extended to cover all the shops down to Acorns in future, to make it even more inclusive.

These illuminations have been an annual event for some years but I think that there was an increase this time in the number of houses in the village with festive lighting.

My impression is that many – if not most – roads had lights for people to enjoy, with some, like Bittell Lane, where the majority had lights. Very well done!

Should this lighting be encouraged and possibly used as a focus for charity fundraising? We might not be able to match the amazing display in the garden at the top of Twatling Road, but it does show the village in a good “light” for Christmas and the New Year. The illuminations this year have been widely enjoyed and much appreciated.

But we could ameliorate it”. Perhaps we could, but it wouldn’t address the major problem of environmental degradation – the bulk of arable farmland is used for growing grass and grain to feed to farm animals.

A joint study by Amsterdam University and Loma Linda University in California assessed the benefit of switching from a meat protein to a vegetable protein diet. Their report revealed the (always) greater negative impact of meat and dairy on the environment over a plant-based diet.

Land use is particularly inefficient. They established that, on average, 10kg of vegetable protein was needed to generate just one kg of animal protein. The most inefficient of all are cattle, which produce just 1kg of meat after being fed 17kg of high-quality vegetable protein.

Some 70% of all farmed land in the world is dedicated to rearing animals; a vegetarian diet would require less than half of that and a vegan diet less than a quarter.

The Washington-based World Watch Institute also carried out its own research and reported that: “The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future.”

limate change has rarely, if ever, been the focus of this column over the past 20 or so years – perhaps because it always seemed a global crisis rather than one that could be tackled at village level.

Halting the march of bricks, concrete and Tarmac over our green fields was seen as more within our remit than preserving the surface and atmosphere of the whole planet. On reflection, however, they are the same thing: saving our fields will help to save the planet in very many ways.

We have been, perhaps inadvertently, putting into action the idea Mary Green, in her Country Diary column in this magazine, promotes: that we should “think global and act local” in all of our dealings with nature.

But her 10 suggestions take activism even further down to the individual level, showing ways every one of us can do something, no matter how small. (One of them, no-dig gardening, is covered in more detail by Hannah Genders in her column in this magazine.)

The point of “acting local” is that even if the result of that change by an individual is vanishingly small, it is also a powerful sign that another person has added their voice and put their tick in the “Yes” box to the question: Do you want to save the planet?

It’s hard to believe that anyone would tick “No”, but individuals, corporations and governments across the world must be doing just that every day, otherwise we would not be facing the crisis we are now witnessing in our global climate.

We hope 2020 will be the year individual actions really start to turn the screw on those who do not care about, or for, the planet.

Greta Thunberg began missing school, aged 15, to stand outside the Swedish parliament holding a sign saying, in Swedish: “School strike for the climate”.

That was in August 2018. In a very short time, her individual activism has carried along people around the globe.

We can’t all be Greta Thunberg, but we could try a few of Mary Green’s suggestions; we could get on board with the Cleaner, Greener Alvechurch initiative, which is making its own small changes; we could support the Worcestershire Pollinators, as have a few people in Barnt Green, with a vision to create pollination corridors through and between our villagers; we could eat less meat. We can do a little a lot.

With each small thing we do, or don’t do, we are making a tiny difference; and with each other person we tell about what we are doing, and why, we could be starting to make a much bigger difference.

Dear Editor – I was interested to read a letter in last month’s Village which rightly recommended “paying your gardener to do a proper job” of clearing up leaves.

I agree in principle, but the problem is that I simply can’t get the staff these days. You’d think that a little man from “down the hill” would be glad of two pounds an hour for some light gardening and labouring. But my last gardener

wasn’t even prepared to steamclean the decking, let alone dredge the main swimming pool and pick up the Labradoodles’ droppings.

Dear Editor – I want to voice my utter disgust at what my family experienced on Christmas Day. Every year on Christmas Day, as do many, we visit St Laurence churchyard in Alvechurch to visit family graves and reminisce about old times.

Suited and booted in all our Christmas finery, off we went; we wiped down the stones, laid wreaths, and shared a Christmas beverage as a son and father tradition – only to discover that a pile of dog poo had been left on the pathway between the grave stones. . . and yes, you’ve guessed it, my husband had trodden in it!

Lickey Wills specialist Sue Jenden offers advice on making the right Will to protect your loved ones.

I

’ve lost count of the number of times people have said to me: “My financial affairs are really straightforward; all I want is a simple Will.” I find myself explaining that in this day and age, there really is no such thing as a simple Will and, if you have one, you may well find that you don’t achieve the end goals you were hoping for.

Many couples think that by having a standard mirror Will (one that leaves everything to their partner and, on the death of the second party, to the children) they have sorted everything out. Unfortunately, this assumes you’re not concerned about any of the following: Your children losing out on their inheritance should your partner remarry and die without having made a new Will l Loss of assets from paying care fees l Adding to the financial burden of your wealthy children by giving them more of an inheritance tax worry l Your hard-won wealth being lost when one of your children goes through divorce l The inheritance never reaching your intended beneficiary; for example, if they have been declared bankrupt, the inheritance would pass straight to their creditors l Making provisions for such things as education for your younger children. l

all your circumstances and fully understood what you want to achieve by making a Will. The increase in the number of second marriages, stepchildren and increasingly fragmented family dynamics means that making a Will can be more complicated than ever before.

The additional inheritance tax relief on the main residence which was introduced in April 2017 reaches its maximum of £175,000 per person this April. The relief is transferrable between spouses. It is important that you make the most of this relief by reviewing your Will.

Many families could potentially lose out on this valuable relief unless they make significant changes to their Wills. It makes sense to review your Will now. The right Will, with appropriate trusts, gives you choice and security in today’s complex social and financial society.

High spirits at Lickey Wassail Revellers enjoyed music, poetry, dancing and a topical Mummers Play.

D

espite the slightly damp weather, spirits were high as around 150 people attended this year’s Lickey Wassail in the Lickey Hills Country Park.

As the light started to fail, the revellers met in the Visitor Centre where Step on Board Appalachian Dancers tapped their stuff to Bob Bignall and his thirsty musicians. Once Head Ranger Steve Hinton had surprised two in the audience by crowning them King Bean and Queen Pea, all paraded down the track to the Lickey Community Orchard.

Having formally invited everyone to gain entrance through the special arch, all marched around the perimeter making as much noise as possible to scare off evil spirits, thus ensuring a bountiful

harvest from the fruit trees.

There followed two poems by local poet Spoz, the hanging of sodden toast on the branches, singing and drinking of warmed apple juice.

This year’s annual Mummers Play, entitled Old Oss, had “Porridge Johnson” with sidekick “Slivey Tove” attempting to trick the Old Man O’ the Woods to allow their “Poor Old Oss” to munch all the apples then sell back the result at a great profit and plant 50,000 new trees. However, they hadn’t accounted for the people’s champion “Robin the Blacksmith” to thwart their dastardly plans.

After Robin was attacked with light sabres (you had to be there), all was saved.

T

here seemed to be a larger-than-ever crowd at the Oakalls & Parklands Christmas Community Event, organised by Coun Caroline Spencer and a team of volunteers.

Although the grassy area where the event is held was very muddy following a prolonged period of wet weather, it was mild and dry on the night and everyone enjoyed music from Blackwell Concert Band, carol singing and refreshments.

Santa was also in attendance, courtesy of the Bromsgrove Lions, and threw a plethora of chocolate coin bags into the crowds for the children.

It won’t happen to me. . . protecting your income

T

he cornerstone of good financial planning is ensuring you have sufficient income to meet essential bills. For most of us, this will be covered by our earnings. But what happens when this source is cut off?

There is no guarantee that your income will keep rolling in each month and one of the most obvious threats is redundancy. This issue has certainly made headlines recently, with household names like Tesco and HSBC laying off staff, and Mothercare and Thomas Cook going into administration.

Such high-profile cases can create concerns around your own job security. But there are other issues to bear in mind. Your earnings may be seriously reduced if you suffer ill-health, forcing you to take time out of work, or reduce hours on a more permanent basis.

It’s easy to assume that this won’t happen to you, particularly if you are currently fit and healthy. But government statistics show that more than 100,000 people leave the workforce each year, following a period of absence due to sickness.

Guard your money against redundancy or ill health, says Martin Pryor.

WHAT PROTECTION IS IN PLACE? If the worst happens, and you are made redundant or forced to give up work through ill-health, then there is likely to be only limited financial help from your employer and the government.

For those with at least two years’ continuous service, statutory redundancy pay is limited to one week’s pay for each year you’ve worked (when aged between 22 and 41), with older employees getting 1.5 weeks’ pay within capped provisions.

Those who are too ill to work will receive just £94.25 statutory sick pay a week for a maximum of 28 weeks.

Only those in employment are eligible for these payments, although there are benefits the self-employed can claim for relatively limited protection.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that these are statutory minimums: your employer cannot pay less than this, but they may provide more.

Check your employment contract for details about your rights around redundancy and the company’s policy on sick pay. Some employers will pay a higher amount (for example a fixed proportion of your income) and for longer.

BOOSTING PROTECTION LEVELS Regular saving is one way to create a financial cushion. But it’s also possible to buy insurance to help protect your income should you be unable to work through illness or injury.

An income protection policy can cover both physical and mental health. These policies will pay out a proportion of your salary, typically 50 to 70%, until you either return to work, or the end of the term or your death. Most will include a deferral period of a set time you have to be of work before you can claim. As a rule of thumb, a longer deferral period will lower premiums.

The cost will also vary depending on the type of work you do: most insurers group jobs into different “classes” of risk, so those who do a lot of driving or heavy manual work, for example, may pay more than office-based workers.

These policies differ from critical illness policies, which pay a one-off lump sum on the diagnosis on one of a specified set of serious illnesses.

Crucial victory in derby Alvechurch FC have the bragging rights over Redditch United.

I

t was a great start to 2020 as Alvechurch picked up a huge three points with a brilliant display away to Redditch United.

As well as being a local derby, it was a crucial game for both teams, with Redditch bottom of the table and ’Church one place above them.

The home side created the first chance of the game, but after 15 minutes Jordan Thomas handled the ball in the box leading to a penalty for Alvechurch – Louis Monaghan’s spotkick hit the post but Aaron Birch was on hand to score the rebound.

The visitors then took control of the game, with Joe Hull denied by a good save from Kieran Boucher before Kyle Morrison volleyed in from the resulting corner to double ’Church’s lead.

They started the second half in the same vein; more or less sealing the win with a stunning third goal finished well by debutant Lewis Wright.

However, Joshua Endall poked in from a controversial corner to get Redditch back into the game, before Brandon Diau bagged them a second.

But despite the pressure, Alvechurch held firm for a 3–2 victory.

Unfortunately, ’Church went on to lose their next two matches – 1–0 at home to Royston Town and 2–1 away at Barwell – having also suffered a 4–1 defeat at second-place Bromsgrove Sporting on Boxing Day, complete with a red card and a penalty. As we went to press, they remained two places off the bottom of the table.

Alvechurch have also strengthened their forward options with Nehemia Zazi from Coleshill Town and Khaellem Khiyah from Bedworth Town.

The team is coached by local residents Richard Deering, Ben Bellingham and Dan Priest, and the team is made up predominantly of boys from the Alvechurch area.

The 2019/20 season has been an exciting one for the boys, as they have sported new kits kindly sponsored by local businesses. The home strip has been sponsored by The Gas Centre Limited, with the away strip sponsored by Faber Consulting.

The Gas Centre is a supplier of plumbing supplies whose director, Pete Deeley, is dad to the team’s bustling vice-captain, Reece. Faber Consulting is a specialist business development agency run by coach Ben and his wife Caroline, whose son

The team are currently on a run of five consecutive victories, and looking to add more silverware to the Spring Cup, which they won in their first season together.

Village Country Diary Mary Green provides 10 ways to ‘think global, act local’.

ast month I wrote about some of the things we could collectively do locally to help with biodiversity. Biodiversity – maintaining a habitat for all natural life – is one of the key ecological issues we have, along with climate change, pollution and depletion of natural resources.

I wrote about how farmers, local councils and other bodies could improve the environment for wildlife – and us. This month I will concentrate on what each of us as individuals can do for biodiversity.

To tackle environmental issues, you have to “think global and act local”. Here are some big thoughts

What can I do for b you can have for the new decade, and how you can act on them locally, in your own life.

Don’t see “nature” as primarily there for your benefit, to improve your physical or mental health (though it will) or escape into for the weekend. Treat it with respect and get to know it first. Spend time really looking at the natural world around you. Everywhere is covered with plants, which also live under the soil in their roots. Birds, mammals and smaller creatures live on these plants.

Everything feeds on and feeds something else. Nothing is ever wasted. Try keeping a daily wildlife diary so you have to spot something every day, and notice how things live.

iodiversity? there’s no such thing. I heard a radio presenter recently saying that we shouldn’t hate wasps. Wasps, she said, were really useful – they preyed on other pests which destroy crops.

All this did was exempt wasps but carry on demonising the other insects. We need them all, however

irritating. In the same way we need nettles, brambles, ground elder and all the other plants we call weeds.

You can change the way you speak about nature – no labels as pests or weeds – and see them differently.

This means rethinking our ideas about beauty and cuteness. A wasp or hoverfly isn’t pretty whereas a blue butterfly is, but both are needed. Cute furry animals don’t need more protection than slugs and snails. Dandelions are just as beautiful as roses, and far more environmentally valuable.

Look at images of all wildlife, not just cute furry animals with big eyes, or pretty flowers. See how delicate and intricate they all are. Watch a bramble patch for a while.

It follows from this that we shouldn’t use pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. All

are meant to kill wildlife. Whatever you do to kill a creature or a plant will have knock-on effects on the whole environment. Manage your house and garden without any of these chemicals and see if you can get your neighbours to do so too.

By allowing slugs you will protect thrushes and hedgehogs. By not weedkilling dandelions you will provide vital nectar for early emerging insects. Fungi are essential for the natural cycle – our soft plants and trees need them.

continued from previous page your garden during the spring and summer. If you have to mow grass (for sports, say, or for walking access) keep this to a minimum: leave other areas of grass and just mow paths through. You’ll see a great diversity of plants come. You can cut it in winter.

Let hedges and trees flower and fruit and grow tall, and only trim them in winter if you have to. Leave seed heads on flowers until they have shed seeds. This way you will help the plants thrive, let nutrients go back into the soil, and provide habitat for insects and birds the year round.

In nature, dead leaves are a rich source of nutrients for the soil. Don’t sweep them up. Let them lie on any planted areas, just clearing paths through and getting them off hard surfaces if you want to. Dead twigs and clippings are great habitat for fungi and insects, so leave them in piles. No need to spend money on “bug hotels” and less to put in the garden waste bin. There’s no point putting The beauty of up bat-boxes if buttercups you cut down and remove vegetation

that hosts the insects bats feed on.

Be untidy!

Include some native flowers in your garden as well as “garden” varieties. Non-native flowers may produce nectar, but they will not host insect larvae.

Every insect has a special plant or plant group it feeds on when young. When the butterflies have got nectar from your buddleias, they will need native plants to lay their eggs on for next year. Native flowering trees and shrubs make great hedging round your garden and will feed insects and birds.

If you have wildflowers in your garden which you see as weeds, decide which ones you quite like and leave them to grow and flower alongside your garden ones. They will provide habitat for native species of insects. Let the others grow on a bit and if you feel you have to remove them, pull them by hand and compost them to add to the richness of your soil.

you are doing! “Weeds” are strong successful plants – herbs – and contain many beneficial chemicals. I had my first salad of dandelion, garlic mustard, cow-parsley and Cornish garlic on January 5!

Snowflake – wild flower in a garden

Make compost out of everything you can.

A simple heap left for a year will produce wonderful compost from green waste. If you want to include lots of cardboard and twiggy bits, you need to be more sophisticated about having a hotter compost system. If this is too daunting, get together with neighbours and do one together.

Don’t use artificial fertilisers. They disturb the balance of the soil and are actually unnecessary.

Look at nature. It produces its own fertilisers.

Don’t use peat: in fact, don’t use any soil material which comes from a different place. Your soil is right for your patch.

There is no bare soil in nature. Trees and plants take in carbon and lock it up in the soil. Every time we dig or rotavate or clear by covering with plastic, or even worse, weed-kill it, we have destroyed the complex balance of organisms in the soil and released the carbon back into the atmosphere. Arable farming, which involves clearing the ground every year, is the greatest cause of habitat loss in Britain.

So, only make holes to plant things and avoid bare earth. Think about layers of plants, from ground cover to soft low ones to tall woody ones with climbers and shrubs in between. There is a basis for ten actions – and I could easily think of ten more! The great thing is that by acting for biodiversity you will also help counter climate change, depletion of resources and pollution. For example, leaving hedges to grow long and tall helps them absorb diesel particulate pollution. Following a no-dig method helps absorb carbon and slow down climate change. Using your own compost instead of artificial fertilisers and not using peat helps save the earth’s resources. Not mowing a patch of grass allows it to absorb excess water and prevents flooding.

Don’t worry if you can’t do everything. If you do even half of this, you can be helping restore our local habitat. What’s more, it’s enjoyable, finding out more about what’s around us, and seeing how to help it without feeling you have to control it.

Village Gardening Hannah Genders peers into the future of gardening.

I

know, I know, it sounds too good to be true! But bear with me because I think it is the future of gardening for a number of reasons.

I first came across no-dig gardening, or minimal dig gardening if you prefer, in 2006 when we were filming for a programme on allotments. The aim of the programme was to find the most sustainable, eco-friendly allotment in the UK. The couple who had set up a nodig allotment really did seem to be doing much less work and producing fabulous crops. It made me use mulch much more and consider how I gardened, but at that point I didn’t take it wholeheartedly onboard.

The idea of protecting the soil surface rather than constantly exposing it to the elements is a permaculture method. Permaculture in its simplest form, both in agriculture and gardening, is to develop ecosystems that are self-sustaining, and work with nature to improve the planet, not work against it.

When we look worldwide at the frightening way we are losing soil – a report in 2017 quoted the figure of 24 billion tonnes of fertile soil being lost per year through intensive farming –

So, with a no-dig method, the idea is to protect the surface of the soil as the most valuable and most fertile part of the garden. This is done by mulching the soil with well-rotted compost which is laid on and not

dug in. This top part of the soil is then planted up with as little disturbance as possible. It becomes incredibly fertile, not only with massively increased worm activity but also with mycorrhizal fungi, which we now know are vital for plant growth.

This whole subject is something very close to my heart, and an area I want to learn more about for myself and for a new vegetable garden I am setting up, but it is also the subject I want to promote at this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Festival (more about this later). With this in mind, I made a trip in November last year to meet the guru of no-dig gardening, Charles Dowding. Many of you may already follow Charles on his YouTube channel or his online teaching videos, which are excellent. He regularly gets tens of thousands of viewers to his wellinformed gardening films.

Charles is a market gardener and has been practicing no-dig, organic gardening since 1982 on several dif-

ferent soils. In total, he now works around a quarter of an acre of intensive, organic growing at his garden, “Homeacres�, in Somerset.

When I visited in November there were still plenty of vegetables in production and it looked amazing, mainly brassicas outside along with neat rows of salad crops in the polytunnel. Since 2003 Charles has also developed a method to produce continuouscropping salad. The compost area is vitally important to this method of gardening and it was neat and well-maintained.

Charles admitted he does buy in some mushroom compost as he literally cannot produce enough compost for his garden each year. Each autumn he will mulch all the beds with compost, and what interested me was that he only adds around one inch of mulch.

The beds have now become so fertile and aerated that they don’t need lots of mulch to keep them producing well.

There are no edges to the beds in most of the Homeacres garden, but each growing area stands proud of the paths due to the mulch being added year on year. Evidently wooden edging can encourage slugs and snails.

The first reason for this is that the organic matter lying on the surface as a mulch acts as a weed suppressant. Secondly, the soil does not need to “recover” after being dug and disturbed – soil recovers itself by producing weeds and covering itself up again. Thirdly, as the soil is not disturbed, the seeds in the soil are not exposed to light and therefore much less likely to germinate. Hoeing the surface off is the main task in keeping weeds at bay and this needs to be done regularly.

The beds in Charles’ garden are long and thin, allowing each side to be reached without treading on the soil and therefore keeping it aerated and not compacting it, the same as any raised bed system. The new plants are pre-grown in the polytunnel as

he has a problem with mice; this is something I have done in my current garden for the same reason and I know it works well.

These small plug plants are then planted directly into this top fertile surface at the right time of year and romp away. Keeping the ground mulched like this also helps keep moisture and warmth in on any soil.

As I mentioned before, I want to demonstrate and promote this method of growing in the feature I run at The RHS Malvern Spring Festival. My feature is called The EGG (Eco, Green and Growing) and the plan is to have talks and plenty of opportunity for learning and asking questions. the rest of the weekend. Stephanie is also a no-dig gardener and food writer, specialising in plant-based recipes which can be grown on the allotment. She has run kitchen gardens on private estates and restaurants, worked in no dig market gardens for 11 years. Stephanie also uses homegrown and foraged plants to make natural products for home, body and garden. She speaks widely on these subjects (including at RHS Wisley and BBC Gardeners’ World Live), has written several books and writes for national publications including Kitchen Garden Magazine. ebruary, the last full month of the winter: hooray! Sunset is getting later and we are all warming up a bit?! If you walk/cycle/drive each evening at tea time, towards the sunset, you will undoubtedly notice a bright object in the sky, looking like aeroplane landing lights or a UFO or something.

It’s there every night, in exactly the same spot and noticeable long before any stars are visible – so what could it be? Regular readers will no doubt be thinking, “That’ll be Venus” (or possibly “Why am I reading this nonsense again?”). But, why does Venus behave this way when everything else in the sky shifts westward on a daily basis, by roughly one degree each day as the Earth trundles round its orbit?

Venus catches us up Well, it’s closer to the Sun than we are and so it orbits faster, taking just 225 days to go round. So it is catching us up just quick enough to counter our movement round the Sun. As it gets closer it will apparently move the other way and disappear in an instant, but that is a few months away.

Mercury does a similar thing but as it only takes 88 days to orbit the Sun, it is here and gone in a flash – relatively. It pops its head over the western horizon briefly in the second week of the month reaching its highest on the 10th but it never gets very high in the sky and disappears very soon after sunset.

As the sky gets darker, we begin to see the famous harbingers of the

end of winter, high in the south. First off is the Pleiades, very distinctive as a fuzzy, cloudy patch dotted with bright, bluish stars (if a fuzzy, cloudy patch can be distinctive?). It’s due south at seven in the evening, quite high in the sky but a nearby bright Moon will spoil things for the first few days of the month.

To the left and slightly lower is the bright star Aldebaran, sitting within the vee formation of Taurus the bull.

er again is the constellation of Orion, possibly the most famous after the Plough. Orion has two really bright stars: Rigel, down in the bottom right hand corner, and Betelgeuse in the top left.

But wait, what has happened to Betelgeuse? It used to be the brightest star in Orion but is now dimmer than Rigel and barely brighter than Bellatrix and Saiph in the other two corners. Well, Betelgeuse is a red giant, in fact a giant among giants, and these huge stars live fast and die young. It is much younger than our Sun and, like a troublesome teenager, it is rather unpredictably variable and since October has been decreasing in brightness.

This may be due to the turmoil in its boiling interior or it may have blown off a cloud of gas and dust which now partly obscures it, or it may have just gone into a bit of a sulk and is ready to explode. Unlikely, but keep a look out; you never know!

She has undertaken commissions for large-scale public murals, ceramic installations, stained glass projects, fine art painting and pottery.

Marina says: “Clay is a wonderful sculptural material and, since my teens, ceramics has been of

interest to me. As my children have got older, I have had more time to work on developing my own creative practice – in painting and drawing, stoneware pottery, hand-built slab pottery and sculpture. My design influences continue to be from nature and landscapes.”

In early 2018, she established Art and Soul Creative to offer a diverse range of arts activities, to run alongside her ongoing fine art painting and studio pottery commissions.

“We’ve had great fun in the parent and child workshops, pottery clubs, kids’ clubs and school holiday clubs. It’s been a wonderful journey and opened up great opportunities for like-minded kids and adults to get creative.”

In the last two years, Marina has hosted several Craft Council “Hey Clay” Events at Alvechurch Library to offer residents the opportunity to explore creative ceramics. She hopes to run this activity again in 2020. For more

Snowdrops on display at church ST LEONARD’S Church in Beoley holds its annual Snowdrop Weekend on February 8 and 9, when the church grounds will be host to huge displays of snowdrops. Visitors usually come from far and wide to enjoy the spectacle.

The church itself will be packed with displays by many of the organisations it hosts and supports. The church dates from the early 12th century so there are also many historical things to see, including a display on the history of all those listed on the village war memorial (located on the road side by the entrance to the church car park).

Village Baking

Quiche for cold days W

Keen baker Jen Morris, of Rowney Green, makes a sweet and cheesy winter warmer.

hile the weather is still cold and wet, it feels very satisfying to eat something comforting and warm.

The sweet flavour of butternut squash and nutmeg, combined with the savouriness of Wensleydale and thyme, make this a delicious combination.

In place of Wensleydale you could equally use Lancashire or feta cheese; you want something crumbly and sharp, to provide contrast to the sweetness of the squash.

Ingredients: Small butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks l 1 tbsp olive oil l 250g ready-rolled shortcrust pastry (or make your own) l 2 eggs l 300ml single cream l 100g Wensleydale, crumbled l Good grating of nutmeg l 1 tbsp fresh thyme (optional) l

Method: 1) Pre-heat your oven to 200C / 180C fan / Gas 6.

2) Toss the butternut squash in the

oil in a roasting tin and put in the heated oven to roast for 35 mins, until tender. Set the squash aside to cool down.

3) Meanwhile, line a flan tin with the ready-rolled pastry, then cover the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans (or dried pulses if you don’t have baking beans). Put into the oven with the squash to “bake blind” for 15mins.

4) Remove the baking beans and parchment from the flan case, then bake the case for a further 5 mins.

5) Whisk together the eggs, cream, cheese and seasoning.

6) Remove the case from the oven and turn down to 190 C / 170 C fan / Gas 5.

7) Put the butternut squash into the pastry case and pour in the egg mixture.

8) Bake for 40-45mins until set.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 15 mins, before serving.
