A few months ago, I was asked to participate in an art project from the ArtEd Professor from Belmont University. She developed a collaborative art show called “The Unity Flag Project” that will be on display on the Belmont campus leading up to and during the last Presidential Debate on October 22, 2020. There were 50 flags sent out to different artists of all ages, races, and beliefs across the country and I was one of them.

Each artist was asked to come up with a concept for their flag that could help bring our country and communities together during a time of so much division. The idea given to us was around “purple empathy,” which is, “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another’s political views, experiences, opinions, understandings, intentions, and decisions.”

I spent time thinking about this and how to represent my community and the people that surround me and how to do it in a way that would bring us all together. This was tricky during COVID, but I felt it was important to show how a community could still come together no matter who they are or what they believe to show support for each other during these trying times.

I first chose to stick with a traditional American Flag base and then asked friends, family, and people that surround me to partic-

I learned so much throughout this project about the people that make up my community. One thing that stood out to me was how much people believed in bringing our country together during this time no matter who you are. One of the participants said “I would love to take part in this … I am so lucky to have come to America. I really believe in what the United States stands for. We need more things like this and less of things that divide us.” I also learned that 75 percent of the participants were either first-, second-, or third-generation citizens of the United States. Realizing how many different countries are represented in my small community was eye-opening.

I am so thankful to all the people that came together to help me complete my unity flag. This project has demonstrated to me that our country and my community is made up of people with so many different backgrounds who all have so many different beliefs. However, just by looking at the names and fingerprints Fingerprints were a tricky part of on my flag, you would not know the project! what each person looked like, where they are from, how old they are, or what they believe in. Yet each person on this flag represents the idea that we are all important and that we all have a place in this country and that there is “Strength in Unity.”

I asked each of them to sign their name in red in place of the red stripes. Historically the color red stood for courage and strength, which I thought was a good fit for where our names would go. I then had them add their fingerprints in white paint in the shape of a star. I was able to get 50 of my friends and family to participate to represent the 50 states.

Background We are both 4th graders at Laurelhurst Elementary. We have been friends since preschool at Whirlwinds but became really close friends in Kindergarten. We enjoy spending time together as classmates, teammates, and friends. We love sports and play together on the same basketball and LVR soccer teams. We are also part of the same Y-Guides group with our dads and other friends. A highlight of Y-Guides is going to Camp Orkila together.

Reid: Who is your favorite soccer player? Why is he your favorite player?

Jonathan: Messi. He is my favorite player because he is good at soccer and he makes his team feel good about themselves.

Reid: What are you most proud of or what has been your biggest achievement?

Jonathan: I am most proud of beating everyone at Reflex math! I was so excited. My big achievement was getting onto the best team at Celtic!

Reid: Sometimes people disagree when they have different opinions. Do you have any advice or thoughts that would help kids and adults get along better in our community when their opinions are different?

Jonathan: Well, people have different opinions about a lot of things. If someone says or does something that you do not think is right, you do not have to yell at them, you just take a deep breath and say it is ok.

Reid: What do you miss most about being able to go to school? What do you miss about being able to play sports in person with each other?

Jonathan: I miss seeing friends and being to be able to play sports with them during recess.

I also miss playing soccer regularly because now you have to wear masks the whole time and it is so tiring. You also do not get to be as physical and you cannot get as close to your friends.

Reid: Have you ever felt treated differently by anyone at school or in sports because of your skin color? How did it make you feel?

Jonathan: I have once at a soccer camp after a game. A kid on another team said something he was not supposed to say. It was something people said during segregation. He said you are not supposed to be on the team because you are black. My feelings were hurt a bunch.

In 1908, the golf course moved from Laurelhurst to its present location on 145th Street overlooking the beautiful Puget Sound.

This move increased the size of the original 40-acre golf course to the 150 acres that it is today in Shoreline. Again, in 1909 President Taft visited Seattle in conjunction with attending the Alaska Yukon exposition and had the opportunity to play at the new Seattle Golf Club course. After moving the course to its current location, most of the original Laurelhurst land was parceled off and sold, which lead to the building of homes that our community members live in today.

The Historic Latimer Place Home W

alk down almost any residential street in Laurelhurst or Windermere and you will notice the historic quality of many of the houses. Each of these homes has its own unique history that can lead us to wistfully say, “If walls could talk.” But thankfully due to conservation and recording efforts, sometimes we don’t need walls to talk, because we know their stories. One such example is of arguably one of the oldest homes in the community, dating back to at least 1897 — a farmhouse turned Seattle Golf and Country Club clubhouse.

In August of 1900, an old farmhouse and the accompanying 40 acres were transformed into what was then the Seattle Golf and Country Club, the original location of what is currently referred to as the Seattle Golf Club. Developed by a group of Seattle businessmen desiring to play golf, the farmhouse that was built and owned by David Ferguson, was turned into a clubhouse that hosted overnight stays and member gatherings.

During that time, in order for club members to get to the golf course, they would generally need to take the streetcar east on Madison Street to Lake Washington, where they would board their own launch, called the “Sunny Jim,” north to the dock at the club grounds. Although getting there was always a process, it was well worth the time.

Similar to the “Sunny Jim,” which transported members to the Golf Club, the “Laurelhurst” was also used as transportation on Lake Washington.

The clubhouse, with vaulted ceilings and expansive living and dining rooms, became home to many happy memories for club members. One significant visitor of the club was President William Henry Taft when he was Secretary of War in 1905. Taft traveled through the area prior to a diplomatic mission to East Asia that included President Theodore Roosevelt’s daughter, Alice Roosevelt.

Although moved a short distance from its original location, the clubhouse, which is now a stately residential home, is owned most recently by Leon and Suzette de Turenne. Having both been born and raised in Seattle in large old homes, they value the history of their Latimer Place house, as it is “reminiscent” of what they grew up in. Leon feels particularly connected to the history of their residence because he has been “a lifelong member” of the Seattle Golf Club. Additionally, both of his grandfathers were members, as well as his own adult children and now grandchildren. Leon also serves on the history committee of the golf club.

One of the things they enjoy most about their new home is the wonderful community of Laurelhurst, which they describe as “very friendly.” Since having only moved from Windermere to Laurelhurst, their activities will be relatively unchanged. Affected by the pandemic, they look forward to a time when they can enjoy more casual socializing with friends and family. Leon and Suzette have been married for 45 years, all spent in the Seattle area. They are grateful to have the opportunity to create memories in this “newto-them” home, where they can add their legacy to its rich history.

Now retired, Suzette and Leon find some humor in the fact that they recently moved from a home requiring little to no stair climbing, to this Latimer house where there are several staircases. Their decision to move has been affirmed by the pleasure they take in their new home and its surroundings. The spacious interior and convenient location to Laurelhurst Beach Club provide ample opportunities for hosting their children and seven grandchildren, ages 10 and under – all of whom live in the Seattle area.

Since purchasing the house in 2018, they have made some adjustments to better suit their needs. Leon’s favorite addition is their new study, which complements the historical significance of the home. Since moving, Suzette, who is an avid gardener, has spent considerable time and effort in expanding the garden to include many of her favorite rose bushes and specialty plants from their previous home.

September marks the beginning of harvest for most wineries along the west coast, which is always a big draw for wine lovers. Due to COVID-19, wineries have had to get creative about interacting with wine consumers. This includes virtual wine tasting, which has allowed wineries of all sizes and budgets a venue to interact with wine lovers.

Many wineries have begun hosting virtual wine tastings, and the formats are as varied as the wineries hosting them. Some of the big-name wineries from California are offering weekly live events on their social media platforms with celebrities, high production value, and an almost “talk show” format. Other winemakers have become stars themselves, making short videos in which they discuss their wine, give tasting notes, and talk about what goes into making that particular bottle.

If you’re like me, you’re asking yourself “why would I want to listen to someone talk about the wine without having a glass of my own?” Well, many Washington wineries have you covered.

Panther Creek Cellars in Woodinville even offers a virtual tasting wine class. The class is conducted by the General Manager and Certified Sommelier discussing four wines. For a flat fee, they will ship you four wines and even schedule a 45-minute zoom session where you can learn more about wine – and these wines in particular – and ask as many questions as you have.

I participated in one of their zoom sessions and found it very informative. My class was a mini vertical tasting: two vintages of a single vineyard Pinot Noir. What made the interaction even more enjoyable was that the vineyard owner participated. He provided details about his grape choices, on why he planted the grapes and how the soil and elevations made for great grapes that become amazing wines. We tasted the two vintages back to back, everything being the same other than the different weather from each

of the years. The virtual setting made it easy to ask questions from the comfort of my own dining room.

We tasted the 2015 and 2016 Kalita Vineyards Pinot Noir. The difference was immediately visible: 2015 having a more oldworld color and 2016 being more ruby red. While we tasted, they educated us on the growing season and winemaking process. It was almost more informative than had we been tasting in person since the experts were right in front of us.

The Pinot Noir wines from Panther Creek are perfect for this time of year. The lighter Pinot Noirs are delicious on those warm end of summer days and the deeper wines are perfect bottles to transition us into the cooler autumn months. A favorite way for us to serve Pinot at this time of year is to make a vibrant pitcher of Sangria – lovely for sipping on the patio or by the fire as the chill sets in.

When you feel safe to go back to tasting in person, visit the Panther Creek Cellars tasting room in Woodinville. On nice days, you can taste in their outdoor tasting space. Panther Creek is an Oregon winery specializing in Pinot Noir, which offers a fun alternative to the typical Woodinville fare.

Make sure to check your favorite wineries’ social media pages and website to see what virtual events they are hosting. With all the restrictions on traveling right now, virtual wine tastings can transport us to any wine region in the world from the comfort of our own homes.

my grandparents live. I help them on their farm. I weed, I pick ready vegetables and fruit, tend to chickens and sheep. It is so much fun. I also love to fish and caught my fist cod this summer!

Piper: I want to be a flyer when I grow up. I want to fly my family over the water to the San Juan Islands and to New York City. I want to be a flyer because I will be high up in the air and go places fast.

What school do you attend?

Villa Academy, Colette will be in 1st grade this fall and Piper starting P3 preschool What are you most looking forward to about school this fall?

Colette: I am most looking forward to joining Villa Voices with Ms. Callan because I love to sing and she helps me learn to use my voice in different ways. Ms. Callan helps me follow my dream to create music.

Piper: I am excited to go to school with my sister! I can’t wait to do art with my teacher in the Villa treehouse.

What extracurricular activities do each of you participate in?

Colette enjoys anything that connects her to her environment and involves getting dirty! Gardening, making compost, beach-combing, fishing, and hiking are among her favorite activities. She takes pride in gathering veggies and lettuce for dinner for our family on most nights. She also has an extensive beach glass collection that she hopes to make glass lamps with when she has collected enough.

Piper jumps at any opportunity to get her adrenaline going.

She loves gymnastics, swimming, and climbing to the highest point of anything!

What do you want to be when you grow up and why?

Colette: I want to be a farmer in Skagit Valley or in the farmlands of Nebraska. We spend a lot of time in the San Juan Islands where

Eases COVID Isolation Written by Chris Shuman & Suzette de Turenne

This winter, Laurelhurst resident Chris Shuman traveled to Mexico and Arizona with her husband, Randy, in their RV. She and her sister, Nancy, and brother-in-law, traveling in tandem, did line dancing at their RV Resorts in Puerto Penasaco, Mexico, and Tucson, AZ. Due to COVID-19, the Tucson resort’s activities, including line dancing, were canceled after only a few days. Quick to adjust, Chris and Nancy decided to organize a group in the street to dance in front of their vehicles. They remembered dances that they had learned in Mexico and were also taught new ones by the Tucson dancers. Eventually, in mid-April, they felt it was safe enough to caravan home to Seattle. Loving their experience in Arizona, Chris quickly started up a neighborhood dance group in front of her home on Latimer Place in Laurelhurst.

Line dancing by nature is a safe, non-touch, appropriately spaced activity, particularly while done outside. Wearing masks and keeping the required distance, the group started small, with only four women. It gradually grew, and now includes anywhere from four to ten women at a time – with even the occasional neighborhood walker joining in. Usually meeting two to three times a week for the past several months, the talent ranges from complete novices to more practiced dancers, spanning two generations. The occasional young grandchild observes and joins in from a safe distance. The music and dancing, while fun and lively, has been a great antidote to the stay at home order, and has allowed safe socializing for the community participants. Music and dance steps are easily found on the internet, so why not get inspired to start your own group, too!

Advocacy And Caring For Children Supporting Local Children A n d Fa m i l i e s I n N e e d Advocacy and Caring for Children (ACC) is a volunteer organization of women in the archdiocese of Western Washington who, through small group “Circles,” provides care, funding, and advocacy for children and families in need. ACC, formerly Association for Catholic Childhood, supports a network of programs focused on the needs of under-served children and families. The organization recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2019.

On December 12, 1918, with the blessings of Bishop Edward O’Dea, a group of Seattle’s Catholic women met for the first time to organize a program of social welfare on behalf of children and families in need. Initially, these women cared for a few of the children themselves and were involved in their placement in adoptive homes and foster care. As the workload increased, they employed professional social workers to place and monitor the children, while they focused their efforts on raising money.

Members gathered in small neighborhood groups to facilitate special projects, fundraising, and to sew layettes for the infants. In the early 1930s, the first “Circles” were formed. These small groups of women, which are often formed within a parish or neighborhood, raise money for ACCs grant ef-

immediate Past President of ACC for the last two years, I am particularly proud of our new all-association annual event – Celebrate the Children – that exceeded goals, as well as the influx of new members across the organization. Thank you to the many people in the neighborhood who have been instrumental and participated in our success as volunteers with agencies or with fundraisers. While I don’t live in Laurelhurst ‘full time,’ I spend a lot of time in the community with my daughter and family, Shannon, Todd, Colin, and Erin Hofmeister.”

ACC has supported over 40 organizations with funding over $1 million in the last decade, and close to $3 million in the last 20 years.

Funds go directly to support Catholic Community Services of Western Washington programs through a grant review process. Fundraising events include luncheons, fashion shows, raffles, auctions, and parties.

Additional funds are raised by seasonal plant and wreath sales, the annual Labor of Love online auction in February, the Magnolia Holiday Home Tour in December, and the Celebrate the Children Event in October. Circles and individuals also provide in-kind donations including layettes, personal care items, back to school supplies and books, and countless volunteer hours.

This year, ACC’s fundraising efforts have been impacted due to COVID-19.

Every Friday evening since COVID-19 struck, our wonderful neighbors Peggy and Patrick Headstrom on 48th Ave NE have scheduled a food truck! What started with a neighborhood circle of about 25 emails has grown into a distribution list that tops over 125 people! And it has become a highlight for many of us to look forward to on Fridays. The chance to chat with neighbors (always 6 ft. apart with masks on) while waiting in line to pick up our orders, or to sit out on the Headstrom’s lawn with our chairs spaced out, provides for some of us a much-needed break from cooking. Additionally, we love the interaction with friends and neighbors, as well as the chance to meet new faces!

Peggy expressed to me her appreciation for becoming more acquainted with neighbors and bond with her own family while supporting local food trucks who have been impacted by the pandemic. Their oldest child, Abby, is going to be a junior in high school at University Prep and is lifeguarding this summer at both the Laurelhurst Beach Club and the View Ridge Swim Club. Carter, their son, is going to be an 8th grader at University Prep. He has been hosting Carter Day Camps with a couple of the younger neighborhood boys and you can see him regularly outdoors passing the soccer ball or chasing down these two active kids!

A significant natural disaster could cause interruption of major services – electricity, water, emergency responses – as well as interruption of communication means like phone and internet. If a disaster interrupts communication means, the Laurelhurst Emergency HUB will set up tents, tables, and bulletin boards, operated by neighborhood volunteers. Laurelhurst residents will come to the HUB to report and assist. Volunteers will use simple written instructions to help neighbors post needs and offers (health, shelter, tools, missing pets). HUB Ham radio volunteers will connect with City and other neighborhoods regarding schools, road damage, hospital bed availability, FEMA’s arrival, and request emergency assistance.

Despite coping with the effects of the pandemic, we cannot forget the threat of earthquakes or other natural disasters. Despite COVID, LEAP (Laurelhurst Emergency Action Plan) volunteers have continued working to prepare Laurelhurst for neighborhood resilience during a disaster-induced period of necessary self-sufficiency. Thanks to generous contributions from many Laurelhurst residents, LEAP has completed construction of the HUB equipment shed across from Laurelhurst Park at St. Stephen’s Church, corner of 45th St. NE and 48th Ave.

homemade PASTA!

There are several methods to making the dough – we used a food processor. The dough was thick as it came together but was easy to work with after it was refrigerated. Once out of the fridge, we split the dough into small portions and began to roll it in the pasta maker. It isn’t necessary to have a pasta maker, although it does help make the sheets very thin and perfectly cuts the noodles. An old manual crank machine worked well for us.

After the noodles were cut, we sprinkled them with extra flour and made little egg nests until we were ready to cook. Fresh pasta is great because it takes just minutes to cook! We topped with browned butter and parmesan cheese. The simpler the better and the real flavor of your noodles will be the main attraction.

Refrigerate any extra noodles overnight and use the next day. Homemade pasta is something the entire family can have fun with, and the delicious pasta is totally worth it.

Homeschool is in full swing and restaurants are still at limited capacity. While trying to mix up the monotony of another home-cooked meal, we decided to get the entire family involved and make homemade pasta.

INGREDIENTS: • 4 large eggs (room temperature) • 2 1/2 cups flour (semolina flour, all-purpose flour — or a blend) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

The kids were all in, of course, as pasta is one of their favorite meals. I know it sounds daunting, but it was actually pretty easy, and everyone had fun. What’s better? It was some of the best pasta we have ever eaten!

There are just 4 ingredients in this recipe (eggs, olive oil, salt, and flour), but the key is the flour. While All-Purpose Flour will work, for an authentic tasting noodle try Semolina* which is a more coarse flour.

INSTRUCTIONS: • Add all ingredients to the bowl of a food processor fitted with the normal blade attachment. Pulse for about 10 seconds, or until the mixture reaches a crumbly texture.

• Remove the dough and form it into a ball with your hands, then place the dough on a lightly floured cutting board. Knead the dough for 1-2 minutes until it is smooth and elastic (If the dough seems wet or sticky, just add in some extra flour. You want it to be pretty dry.).

• Form the dough into a ball with your hands and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Let the dough rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to 1 day.

• Roll out the pasta dough into your desired shape, either by hand or using a pasta maker. Cook the pasta in a large pot of generously-salted boiling water until it is al dente, usually between 1-5 minutes depending on the thickness of your pasta. Drain and use immediately.
