Local INSLEE RETAINS GOVENORSHIP Jay Inslee will stay in office for at least four more years after beating Bill Bryant. Inslee received 55 percent of the general vote, racking up 1,531,008 votes. Cyrus Habib won the seat of Governor receiving just shy of 55 percent of the vote.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS SECOND After a major win against AFC rival the New England Patriots this past Sunday, the Seahawks are 6-2-1 this season, one-anda-half games behind the NFC leader, the Dallas Cowboys.

Besides getting the presidency, the Republicans also got the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. They took 239 seats in the House of Representatives and taking 51 seats in the Senate.

PROFESSIONAL BIKER HERE AT PHS

Senior Emily Rivers is not just another student here at PHS, she spends most of her time outside the classroom on her bike, she has been riding motorcycles since she was six.

ake a motorcycle, hurtling over a length of cracked desert highway. Now confine that hurricane-like power to a walled concrete circuit, complete with cutting turns and elevation changes.

Now add 20 other motorcyclers and make them swerve in front of each other, careening over the concrete in a thrill-ride to the end of the race.

Combine all of the most intense factors of racing and motorcycles and you get road racing, a sport that has come to consume a significant portion of senior Emily Rivers’ life.

“I race on a track kind of like a NASCAR track, except instead of doing all left turns, it is left, right, elevation change, straightaways, hard breaking, 90 degree turns and we are on motorcycles. We drag our knee around corners, we get low to the ground and we try and see how fast we can go,” Rivers said.

“We just go around for fun and have competitions with buddies. For me, there is no point to it besides going out there and having a giant adrenaline rush,” Rivers said.

Rivers has grown up with the racetrack, finding her second family through the family she was born into.

“I got into it through my mom. She started riding on the street back in 2005 so I was like six or seven. I was tiny. I would get on the back of her bike and we would just go to different bike nights which is like a gathering of motorcycles.

In 2013, one of my friends trusted me with their racing bike and I went out on the track. The rest is history,” Rivers said According to Rivers, the insanity of breakneck racing forges bonds of friendship lock riders together as unbreakable as siblings with a couple degrees more kindness.

The PHS volleyball team after going 2-2 and finishing fourth in the district tournament Nov. 4-5, the Vikings headed to the Toyota Center in Kennewick, WA, Nov. 1112.

Their first match was against the Bothell Cougars; the match went the maximum, with the two teams splitting the first two sets.

In the decisive fifth set, Bothell ended up ahead in the end winning the third set 15-13.

That put them in the consolation bracket, against Tahoma High School.

The team lost to Tahoma in three straight sets ending their season.

PHS had two volleyball girls make the all-area team.

Junior Kaitlin Sugai made the All-Area first team and junior Anna Saelens got the honor of being in the second team All-Area.

The PHS girls soccer team PHS finished first in their league with a record of 13-1-2.

They qualified for the State tournament with the fourth seed out of the district. They ended up playing Skyline High School, in the first round of State. Skyline scored two goal early in the match, one coming off a corner kick.

Despite multiple chances, the deficit seemed too large to overcome and PHS lost the match 2-0.

Despite the disappointing ending, PHS had a successful year.

Head coach Matt White was named SPSL coach of the year.

With senior Katelyn Evans, juniors Sunny Biebers and Hallie Johnson and freshman Meredith Udovitch all making the first-team and senior Katelyn Wood making the second team All-League. Honorable mentions for the All-League team were senior Rian Kasner, sophomore Grayson Nottage and freshman Elsa Bley.

The PHS girls swim team may be a young group but quite dynamic.

The team ended in 15th place at the 4A State Swim

Meet that was held at the King County Aquatic Center.

Junior Kacey Kiuchi was the sole medalist for PHS finishing third in the 100m backstroke with a time 57.66.

Kiuchi also finished ninth in the 200m freestyle race and was part of the 200m Medley Relay team that finished 10th at the meet, the team was also comprised of junior Tabitha Messineo, sophomore Gabi Dunaski and freshman from Kalles Jenna Fitzsimmons.

The 400m Freestyle Relay team finished 11th at the State meet, which was comprised of Dunaski, Kiuchi, junior Sara Anderson and senior Chelsea Kegan.

The PHS Boys Water Polo team finished strong and was the last fall team competing. They took seventh place at the State, Saturday Nov. 12 at the Curtis Aquatic Center.

The team lost two competitive games early in the tournament to Bainbridge Island and Roosevelt High Schools.

PHS took seventh place after defeating Shorewood 199.

Senior Beau Pasqier contributed nine goals, freshman Levi Kiuchi scored five goals and senior Akash Morrell accounted for two of the goals as well.

Both Pasquier and Morrell were honored by being chosen as honorable mentions for the All-State team.

After a 4-6 record this season and a postseason berth, the PHS team was honored by having many players selected to the All-League team.

Senior wide receiver Noah McFadden and senior defensive lineman Gavin Dunaski were both selected to the first team All-League.

Senior quarterback Nathaniel Holcomb, was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year along with Olympia running back Scott Gunther.

Senior wide receiver Talon Yerbury, senior defensive lineman Eric Stefany and junior kicker Nathen Cutler were all selected to the All-League second team.

Along with them, sophomore wide receiver Darius Morrison, junior defensive back Landen Neff, junior linebacker Brendon Nogtel, senior offensive lineman Isaiah Briones and junior offensive lineman Carson Simmons, were all named honorable mentions for AllLeague honors.

I recommend going to the South Hill Mall for Black Friday, because there are multiple stores in one spot.

That way, you do not have to fight trying to find parking,

The Holiday Food Drive lasted from Oct. 31-Nov. 9. Students participate in their first period, in hopes to win first place. The class with the greatest donation receives donuts and chocolate milk. ith the holiday’s fast approaching, members of Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) are currently working on projects that help the Puyallup community and students of Puyallup High School.

HOSA is a club that is focused on community service and providing the community with basic necessities that they do not have access to on a regular basis such as food and toiletries, according to treasurer Deepa Bajwa.

“HOSA is all about community service. It is really involved in helping students in the school, as well as the local community with health issues by providing them with food and money. We do a lot of fundraisers and blood drives,” Bajwa said.

HOSA hosts three blood drives throughout the year that allow students to donate blood to those who need it,

The Dec. 16 release of “Rogue One” is a backstory to the “Star Wars” series. This production is not a vital point to the series of where it was left off with Kylo Ren. This presents more of a side story to better understand where the roots of the saga came from.

I love the idea of bringing this story to the mix for it recognizes how the “Rebellion” and the “Imperialists” clashed in the first place.

An unlikely band of ordinary people set out to do something extraordinary. From the past movies there has always been cut scenes to different heroes at different moments in the movie.

In “Rogue One,” there is more of a style of having a team of heroes sticking together, which I predict will lead to bigger action scenes occurring in a more grand way.

What I like is that this movie symbolizes the first set of heroes entering the “Rebellion.”

It captures the essence of how the organization started and with that, the feud with the

Imperialists as well.

The cinema takes place during the reign of Darth Vader and his army of clones.

So the timing of the story here is vital to understanding some of the key events to the series as a whole, just not to the story of “The First Order,” with Kylo Ren as commander.

Of course what I do not like is that I do not want to take the time to step backwards in the series and learn about the “Death Star” once again.

Yes, this is an interesting take on how the “Imperialists” created the biggest weapon of mass destruction ever but we already know how that turns out!

We do not need to go over how it was made and we definitely know how it was destroyed in the first place.

What viewers should take in is that this is just a side action story to the beginning of the war between the “Rebels” and the “Imperialists.”

Even if we know how this story ends in a sense, I know that I will still enjoy the action and adrenaline that this movie will bring.

In this issue The Viking Vanguard takes a look at a variety of sports programs and examined what the programs could use but do not have the budget to buy and what little they can buy with the money they are given, not all sports are represented.

Needs: This season I personally paid to repair our tent when two poles became damaged because I did not put tent repair into my budget so ASB will not cover what is not requested at the start of the year. The stop watch that prints out the time also broke this season and I had to borrow a timer from Rogers for our home meet. The timer will cost $600 to replace. I don’t know if we have the money to replace it until I get the invoice for the bus we took to Portland for an invite which we have to pay for since it was more than 55 miles away from the school. The cost seem never ending. The school does not pay for referees or officials for Cross Country because the coaches set up and run our home meets.

Bought: Track went to four invites last year. Each invite costs $100 to $200 to enter. The money allocated to the track teams does not even cover the events we enter.

Needs: We need new jackets and warm-ups. Our team this season was 75 athletes with only 65 jackets. The team also has to buy their own shorts because I do not have shorts for the team. They are provided with a singlet and then the athletes order their own shorts. Track is also in need of additional warm-ups and uniforms. As the programs become more successful, more athletes join and more uniforms and equipment is required but we do not get additional funds regardless of the size of the team.

Bought: If a can of tennis balls is $2.00, we need five for every match. We play 12 Varsity and 12 JV matches- plus a few that disappear into the hedge next to the courts or water retention pond, that is about $132.00 for match balls only. Practice balls last say two weeks- we could use up to 10 cans each court times four but would need to replace five times in a 10-week season.

That would be another $400.00 in tennis balls. Over the budget already.

Needs: Our nets are starting to fall apart. They will need replacement in the next year or two. We have wind screens that the zip ties break and I do not have it in my budget to buy new ties. It is not part of the facilities, so anything that goes wrong, I must fix with our budget or parent help!

We need replacement squeegees/rollers to dry courts. Ball machines need service or parts to keep running. Upkeep on these have been limited.
