CRAGLE SEEKS BROADWAY, FINDS VOICE B Y

When he was 10 years old, senior Dylan Cragle started his singing career; Cragle has attracted attention from big music industries like The Voice.

“When I was 10 I actually just said to my mom randomly ‘I want to sing’ so on my tenth birthday she decided to surprise me with vocal lessons,” Cragle said.

Over the years Cragle has performed a wide range of different genres of music.

When he first started singing, Cragle wanted to be a country singer.

“When I was 10, I did my first singing competition at the Puyallup Fair and I sang ‘Honey I’m Home’ by Shania Twain. I even had a cowboy hat on and cowboy boots. I looked pretty adorable. So, I started out as a country singer and I still do a little bit of country,” Cragle said. “My parents are my biggest supporters ever. My mom and my dad allow me to do what I dream of. If I want to do a show, they will do anything they can to get me there. My mom is my manager. I really appreciate that they believe that I can actually go somewhere with my career.”

I have already met a lot of the recruits and they are super cool, I am actually rooming with one of them. I am really excited for a new environment and a new start in life,” Carrington said.

Carrington’s family has played a large role in her success with soccer, her father being a college athlete and her mother supporting her through thick and thin has lead her through her high school career and onto college.

“When I think about who I am today I look back to a time in my life that really helped me identify who I am, which was when Whitney Marshall committed suicide.

It was probably the craziest thing, easily, that I have ever been through in my life,” Carrington said. “It showed me to be not only a good teammate but also a good friend and to be loyal to people and faithful, also to honestly never take a day for granted. I think about her every day, she pushes me— I feel her presence pushing me in the right direction. This entire experience has really shaped me to be this graduating senior that I am today.”

It was difficult I guess, it was an acclimation kind of thing. ”

Playing soccer for 12 years, Wilson plans on making the sport part of his future as well.

“I have been playing soccer since I was four and at PHS I have been captain this year and last year as well,” Wilson said. “Everybody would like to think they are going to play their sport professionally after college but there is a very, very strong chance that is a no. But for fun?

Yeah, definitely when I am older. I want to do something science-y where I am not in an office all the time.”

While he may not continue playing competitively in his adult life, Wilson plans to play in college.

“I am going to Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood for school. I was going to go to Adam State but I am going to try and get my grades right first to make sure I can play soccer in school,” Wilson said.

Although ready to take his next step to independence, Wilson says he will miss the closeness of high school.

“I am going to miss seeing my friends everyday but I am looking forward to being independent and learning how to do things completely on my own. I am moving out after high school so it will be a big change,” Wilson said.

Throughout his soccer career, Wilson has been influenced and built up by many different coaches and supporters, but his old club coach Gary Heale has been most influential by far “He is my dude, my club coach. He took me to all my games, asked me how I was in general, not just in soccer.

He really wanted to know how I was doing; he was just a really quality guy,” Wilson said.

Along with Heale, Wilson’s father has always taught him the importance of hard work.

“It is super cliché but my dad has been a huge influence on me,” Wilson said. “He has always taught me about hard work and has always demonstrated it too. ”

Drama program positively influences Decker B Y

he sound booth in the auditorium, to many people, is just that: a sound booth. To senior Amy Decker, the sound booth is home.

Decker has been involved with high school drama since her sophomore year.

“I liked [drama] and I really enjoyed it [in my sophomore year]. I was in drama class too and I really liked that but when it came to my junior year I could not be in drama because I had to take American Sign Language for another year,” Decker said. “That was my year where I got really depressed and I was really down all the time. I tried out for the first play [junior year] but I did not try out for [the other plays] because of my grades. So I fell into a

big slump and it was not good for me and I realized that I needed to be in drama.”

This realization has led Decker to be in every play this year as either a cast member or stage member. She is also in both stagecraft and drama class. Out of all of her plays, Decker’s favorite was Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” where she played the Queen of Naples.

“The Tempest was definitely my favorite moment. It was fun and I grew a lot as an actor. We were all working together really well,” Decker said.

In all of the plays there is one solid fixture that has been a huge inspiration to Decker: drama teacher Peter Sirl.

“When I was having problems in my junior year [Sirl] told me ‘Do not forget about the past but do not let it affect your future,’” Decker said.

Decker continues to apply this lesson as she spirals towards graduation and college. She plans to go to Green River Community College, but has not decided what career path she would like to take.

“I do not think anyone really knows what they want to do but that is just me on a philosophical level,” Decker said. “At this point in time I just want to graduate so that I can have one of those days where I wake up and I do not have to do anything.”

Decker also wants to travel and see the world.

“I just want to have days where I can go places and relax.

I have this wanderlust. I want to go around the country,” Decker said. “I do not even care where I go; I just want to go places and see beautiful things.”

And that is just the abridged version of senior Matt Voss’s list of accomplishments.

Voss has continually demonstrated his dedication to the sports he loves throughout his entire high school career, not to mention the years and years of training before hand.

“I have been wrestling for 12 or 13 years and I have been captain of the wrestling team for the last two years. I have been playing football only since seventh grade and was just captain this year. I just play football in school but wrestling has always been a part of my life,” Voss said.

Voss does not only dedicate time to wrestling during the school season, either. Wrestling takes up a good portion of his year.

“There is only a short amount of time that is actually off season wrestling and a lot of that is just lifting and running. I am wrestling nine or 10 months out of the year,” Voss said. “I think being in there every day, grinding it out, putting the hard work in consistently is one of the tougher things because it takes so much consistency to be good.”

Voss will never forget one his proudest moment as a high school wrestler.

“My most memorable experience was the first time I won the state championship last year; that was pretty awesome. You work so long and ever since I was a kid they told me ‘we are training you guys so that you can be a state champion when you are in high school,’” Voss said. “And training that long and hard and then knowing that all your hard work did not go to waste is just an awesome feeling.”

Being involved in wrestling and football alike has brought Voss great memories and wonderful relationships — relationships he says were the highlight of his high school experience.

“I am going to miss the friends I made being on the football team and the wrestling team,” Voss said. “I have gotten to know some great people and I will miss them the most. I am going to miss being a part of the brotherhood of it all, you have to be on the same page and know that the guy next to you is working hard too, it is something you can feel.”

Wrestling helped create a stronger connection to Voss and his family. His siblings, sophomores Nick and Riley Voss have both been involved in the wrestling program.

“It has been awesome wrestling with my brother. My sister is involved too, she is the manager. It is good that I can do the sport that I love with the people that are closest to me and we can enjoy ourselves and have a good time,” Voss said.

Voss sees wrestling as a large component of his life in the future, just as it is now.

There are some opportunities to compete internationally and there are chances where if I win certain tournaments I can get into the Olympics,” Voss said. “That is something I hope I can do later on, I do not know if that is something I can do right now but that is the goal.”

Wrestling has given Voss the mind set to always try your hardest, a trait useful and beneficial when moving on to college.

“The biggest thing wresting has taught me is that hard work will take you places,” Voss said. “The harder you work, the more likely you are to be successful. Wresting in college will hopefully motivate me to work hard in college and get a successful job after I graduate.”

Voss will be attending George Mason University in the fall.

Because of wrestling, opportunities were presented to Voss that may not have been otherwise.

“It is in Farefax, Virginia, just 10 minutes outside of Washington D.C.,” Voss said. “They have a really great program for bioengineering which is what I will be studying. I really like the coaching staff there and they are making it pretty cheap for me to go. I am going there on a wresting scholarship.”

Although he will be moving on to college and leaving his high school teams behind, Voss advises his fellow teammates to continue their hard work and to never give up.

“My advice to next year’s team is that you can always work harder,” Voss said. “And there is not much more I can say than that.”

or senior Kim Cota, being the captain of the cheer team was a very important aspect of her high school experience.

The cheer team focuses on encouraging teams to do their best, which was one of the things that appealed to Cota.

“I love cheer because I am not competitive at all really so that is why I think I like cheer a lot. You are not competing in any sports at the school you are just encouraging everyone, that is what I really like to do,” Cota said.

The cheer team recently entered a competition, taking first in one of the competitions they participated in.

“We did do a competition my senior year but it is just high school cheer. We obviously wanted to win but it still was not that big of a deal because that is not what high school cheer is about. It is about encouraging other teams and being the leader for the school,” Cota said.

Cota describes her feelings about her high school experience as switching between hating it and loving it.

“Sometimes I feel like I really hate high school, like I want to leave and get on with the rest of my life. But high school is such an awesome experience, I have met life long friends and learned so many things.

The staff at Puyallup High School is so awesome and I do not know what I would do without them. I love high school it is really awesome,” Cota said.

This past school year has been an exciting time for Cota.

“I think that the beginning of the year was really exciting and not really stressful.

The whole year has been really fun and exciting, because new things have been coming up like deciding where I go. The end of the year has been really stressful, but still exciting,” Cota said.

Cota plans to stay in Puyallup after high school while interning at her church. As a career, Cota plans on being an elementary school teacher.

“I am doing an internship through my church and they are partnered with South Eastern University, which is a university down in Florida, but I will be here in Puyallup doing the internship and taking classes online through the school,” Cota said. “You are basically just interning for the church so I will be getting these extra classes and teachings from the pastors and leaders in the church.”

he impact music has had on senior Trevor Whitney has heavily influenced his future career decisions.

“I have always liked music. I have played guitar since I was in fifth grade and I joined choir this year just to try it out and realized that music is the field I wanted to go into for college,” Whitney said.

Whitney is attending Pacific Lutheran University for music in the fall. However, he is also considering other types of careers.

“I would like to produce music commercially,” Whitney said. “I could be an actor. I kind of want to be an actor. I do not know.”

Whitney and senior Myles Ricker got first place in Viking Varieties May 12. They performed a cover of Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home.”

“To perform you have to know how to play music first. Then you have to like what you are doing,” Whitney said. “It is hard to have a good performance if you are not into what you are doing. I was into it and had a good person to do it with. If you have good chemistry with the person you are singing with then it turns out better.”

In addition having a place on the stage, Whitney also played on the football field as running back.

“I played two years in a row. I received the second team all SPSL even after spraining my leg.

That was probably the highlight of my year. Winning the Rogers game, I got hoisted up by my team after coming back from an injury,” Whitney said.

“This year, I realized that I have a lot of things to offer and I realized I need to take action on those things or else nothing will happen for me. Like in art, I need to be motivated. If you block motivation, nothing will get done.”

Whitney would like to leave behind a positive atmosphere.

“I want everybody to know that they have an equal chance at things, even if things are going bad in their lives they just need to know that they can make a difference,” Whitney said.

aseball player, outdoorsman and “Top 20 senior,” Tyler McDowell, plans to attend Washington State University next year to play Cougar Baseball.

Looking toward the future of his baseball career, McDowell was presented with plenty of options in the recruitment process.

“There was one tournament that I went to that was Northwest Championships and it was just the best kids from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and we all went to this big tournament and had all of these scouts following every game that we went to,” McDowell said. “So I was being recruited

by UW, Washington State, Oregon and they were all wanting me to visit them so I visited a couple of them. I really liked WSU because of all of the community there and it is not out of the way like how some colleges are spread out, this one is compact and it felt like home over there.”

But McDowell’s road to success had started long before the recent scouting season; with an orange bat, a tee and some Wiffle balls.

“When I was little my dad got me one of advanced then some of the other kids those big ol’ orange bats, so I had one of so instead of playing in a set U-team – those and he had this tee thing that was because there are set age U-teams like if like a toy for kids where you would press you are 10 you play 10-U or if you are 18 this button and the ball would pop up and you play 18-U – but I was like 16 playing you would hit it. So I would just stand in the 18-U,” McDowell said. “So that was really yard nailing those little Wiffle balls. Then I scary for me because all these guys were went to tee-ball then moved up to coach- huge and jacked and I was just a little pitch and then kid-pitch and then the scrawny tall kid playing first.”

Besides inspiring a love for baseball in outfield so I still do not know what I am McDowell at a young age, McDowell’s dad yet. So I will be playing three positions also recognized McDowell’s talent and hopefully over there,” McDowell said.

In addition to playing baseball, pushed him beyond the confines of his McDowell pursues scholastic success age bracket.

“My dad noticed that I was more in his classes. Balancing these two

disciplines has forced McDowell to make some sacrifices.

“Getting time to do my work and studying while playing baseball and working out and all of these other sports are really the tough part because I have to prioritize on what I study. So if I know that I have a math test and I am already good at math but I have an essay due in English then I will probably do the essay because I already know the math,” McDowell said.

“So it is prioritizing definitely and trying not to watch so much TV. And for me at least, in being a student athlete, it is really tough to socialize, so I kind of have to give that part up to work on school and baseball.”

School and baseball however, are not McDowell’s only hobbies. According to McDowell, his interests range everywhere from chick flicks to hunting trips.

“So I played three sports during my high school career: baseball, basketball and golf. I love fishing with my grandma and just fishing in general. I fly fish, I tie my own flies; Darrien [Clemens] and I have tied our flies now for like a couple months, we are starting to get into that old man kind of thing, just making our own stuff, trying to catch fish. So I do that, I ride dirt bikes, I bike, I hike. I grew up with an older sister and she had control of the TV so, I am not going to lie, I kind of like chick flicks but I watch all types of movies,” McDowell said.

“Back in junior high, Hyeon Jin [Kim] and I would have Rubix cube competitions, seeing how fast we could go during our fourth period, so I can solve the Rubix cube because of him. Hyeon is so fast and now I am at like five minutes; super slow. I also hunt; I hunt for pheasant, quail, bird stuff with shotguns, I do not really deer hunt.

I trap shoot, I shoot bows, I am basically just all outdoors; I hate sitting inside.”

In addition to his varied talents, McDowell has earned a variety of nicknames. One such nickname is “the missile,” a name given to him during a PHS baseball game.

“I have too many names from this baseball team already. So we were playing in SafeCo and I do not know what the score was but it was bases loaded, we had one out, Tyler Freeze was on third and I did not know who he was or how fast he was but apparently all of the guys said he was one of the fastest kids and he had the most stolen bases. So I was playing right field and this kid hit a pop-up to me so I caught it for the second out and Tyler Freeze was tagging up on me on third so I threw it as hard as I could to Brendan and it was just a rocket or a ‘missile’ is what they call it, I threw it to home and I got him out by like 10 feet, like it was stupid,” McDowell said.

“So they had that as the play of the day on King 5 with Chris Egan so I got to be on TV with all of the baseball guys and Levi [Jordan] was announced on that too for his hit to get two runs in to take the lead and then I got the play of the day with that.

After that they just started calling me ‘the missile’ and every time I throw it from the outfield they are like, ‘Incoming!’”

Pederson transfers love for animals to career B Y

For a two-legged mammal, senior Lacey Pederson spends quite a lot of time with animals that walk on all fours.

Her current companions include cows, dogs, goats and more. They collectively take up a majority of her free time.

“In my free time I enjoy riding horses, training dogs or working with all sorts of four-legged critters. After work on some days I enjoy visiting a local dairy farm and playing with the newborn calves,” Pederson said. “I have a 10-year-old mustang horse who I love riding or bonding with and I also have a year old border collie who I am training to be my agility superstar.”

All of these animals have had a big impact on Pederson’s life not only because of the amount of time she spends with them but the amount of happiness they give her.

Choosing baseball as his main sport, Jordan does not plan on continuing his football career.

“Football is going to be done for me; I am a bit undersized to be playing college football. High school was fun for me because it is less serious than college football and you can get away with being as small as I am but I never used it as an excuse,” Jordan said. “I always thought it was a challenge, I was a lot smaller than everybody else but that just meant I could prove to people that size does not matter, which I do not think it really does. Anyways, football is done for me—it was really physically abusive to my body but I had a lot of fun doing it and I am sad I am not playing next fall but I need to get started for my future.”

With both sports leaving a lasting impression on Jordan, he has decided to continue with baseball after high school.

“Right now my plan is to go to the University of Washington. I am going to study engineering there. I was offered Direct Freshman Admission, an admission called ‘DFA’ and that is basically being admitted into the major as a freshman—normally you apply at the end of your sophomore year or sometimes after your freshman year, it depends. I was offered that so I think I am going to go there,” Jordan said. “I got some scholarships…and I think I am going to use that to pay my way through college and I am going to walk on to the baseball team. I do plan on playing baseball for as long as I can of course but academics are the big piece to me too. I really enjoy learning things.”

Camire plans to continue acting experience Senior Alden Camire has been actively involved in the drama program throughout his high school experience.

“I started acting during my sophomore year after my brother had suggested it,” Camire said. “Half way through my sophomore year I decided to try out for one of the shows and I ended up really liking it, so I just kept doing it.”

Camire participated in a total of seven plays at Puyallup High School.

Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost” was Camire’s favorite production that he has been a part of. “[I have been in] seven plays. There have been nine at PHS since my sophomore year. I was only in one play my sophomore year but I have done every show from my junior year to the end of this year,” Camire said. “My favorite one was probably Shakespeare’s ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’ that

we did last year. There was just something about it. The connection between everybody made the play just work so much better. It was almost magical.”

Camire has always been inspired by his brother to continue his acting career.

He continues to look up to his brother and is thankful for his support.

“My brother is the one that got me to start acting. He has always pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone. He really got me to aspire to be better than what I am and to reach new goals that I have not been able to reach before,” Camire said.

After high school, Camire plans to attend Western Washington University.

At WWU, Camire hopes to take classes

in business and accounting.

“I plan on attending Western Washington University next fall. What I am going to do is take classes in business and accounting.

My second year of college I want to start taking theater classes,” Camire said.

Even after college, Camire plans to continue his acting career.

He hopes to make a career involving acting but he plans to use his business degree as a backup plan.

“Once I graduate from college, I hope to find an acting job in the film industry.

Or make my own movies with friends and hope for something to come of it,” Camire said. “If it does not happen that is why I am taking business classes.”

For Taylor, her biggest influence has always been her grandfather.

“He was the CEO of REI and he helped push my drive for sports and outdoors. He has always taught me to do what you love doing rather than doing what makes you T A Y L O R

money,” Woods said. “He helped me learn that I love to play golf and I am going to do it whether I am making a ton of money or minimal.”

Woods is going to miss her teammates and competitors alike as she graduates and moves on to college.

“We play together outside of school as well as during the season. I will miss knowing and having all my friends; playing with them and against them every weekend like we do now,” Woods said. “My advice to all the payers still in high school next year is to keep pushing through. Even if you have had a bad hole. Play through it, you can still score great, you have to let it go and take each shot and play it the best that you can.”

Jacob Durrance, Speech Captain on the debate club, says that over the past several years has felt a community throughout Puyallup High School.

Moving from junior high and into high school was an important transition to Jacob Durrance.

“The most memorable part of high school was the first day of sophomore year because you could clearly see the division of which junior high they came from, but by the end of the first week there was a sign of unity that is Puyallup High School. Leaving junior high and going into high school is like your last step before you go into the real world,” Durrance said.

Durrance was mainly involved in the debate club which helped him become a better public speaker and leader.

“During my years before high school, I was never forced to take a leadership role and represent something bigger
